- 0:00I have to ask you, have you ever heard of this story before? It's amazing.
- 0:03I learned about it recently as I was preparing for a sermon to
- 0:07honor Saint Dominic on his feast day. Rightly renowned as the founder
- 0:12of the Order of Preachers, rightly celebrated as a very great champion of the Rosary,
- 0:15he also had a zeal for souls. That zeal
- 0:19for souls was so great that he was known during prayer
- 0:23and vigils he kept at night to cry out, Lord,
- 0:26what will become of sinners? Because he knew the
- 0:30worst thing that could happen to a sinner is for the sinner to die without
- 0:35first being reconciled to Christ.
- 0:39Now, what if instead he and
- 0:42we not only cried out, Lord, what will happen to sinners?
- 0:47What if we also cried out, Lord, what will happen
- 0:50to preachers? What do I mean by that? Stay with me,
- 0:54I've got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McDade, your daily host
- 0:58every day here at the Catholic Current, coming to you from the Station of the
- 1:01Cross Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look.
- 1:04Glad you're here. Saint Dominic cried
- 1:08out, Lord, what will become of sinners? I say let's do that.
- 1:12Let's have a zeal for souls. Let's admit that the worst fate that can
- 1:16befall anyone is to be a sinner dying not reconciled
- 1:20to Christ. What do preachers have to do with that? Well,
- 1:24to really learn about the mission of preachers, you need to read Saint Paul's
- 1:28Epistles to Timothy. There is a veteran preacher talking
- 1:32to his apprentice about how to preach. It's great
- 1:37stuff. It's inspiring. But certainly every disciple of Christ,
- 1:40and in particular those who bear the burden of
- 1:44the office of preaching have to have a zeal for
- 1:48souls. We have to be horrified at the thought that
- 1:52a soul might be lost. So let me give you an example of
- 1:55someone who was a disciple of Christ who had
- 1:59a zeal for souls and understood the fate that awaits
- 2:04those who reject Christ. British author and
- 2:08speaker Charles Spurgeon said this: If sinners be damned,
- 2:12at least let them leap to hell over our dead bodies.
- 2:16And if they perish, let them perish with our
- 2:19arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them
- 2:22to stay. If hell must be filled, let it be filled
- 2:26in the teeth of our exertions, and let no one
- 2:30go unwarned and unprayed for. Pow.
- 2:36Let no one go unwarned and unprayed for.
- 2:39So in the external forum, the warning comes in particular
- 2:43from preachers, and the praying for in the internal
- 2:48forum, well, that's everybody's business. Now I have to
- 2:51ask you, when was the last time you heard
- 2:55a preacher speak like that, who used words like sinner
- 2:59and damned and hell and dead bodies?
- 3:02And imploring? Was it recently?
- 3:06Let me know in the comments or contact me at thestationofthecross.com/askfather.
- 3:12I want to know because it seems to me, based on what I've
- 3:16heard from congregations and from priests around the world,
- 3:20the type of preaching that's expected, the type of
- 3:24preaching that's tolerated, the type of preaching
- 3:28that's encouraged is Um,
- 3:33not quite as sharp, oblique,
- 3:37blunted. There are worse words. I'll stay with those because
- 3:41this is a broadcast. What's my point?
- 3:46We disciples of Christ, and especially those
- 3:51who bear the burden of the office of preaching
- 3:55the gospel with authority, we have a terrible
- 3:59obligation before God to tell the truth about sinners myself
- 4:04included, and the truth about God so that
- 4:07they can be made right before they die. And if
- 4:11we add sugar, if we soft soap, if we backpedal,
- 4:14whatever image you want to use, whatever metaphor you want
- 4:18to deploy, if we don't tell the saving truth,
- 4:23souls will be lost and God will notice. Now,
- 4:26someone who really spoke truth to power,
- 4:30someone who confronted true fascism
- 4:36was a German scholar, Dietrich von Hildebrand.
- 4:40Now, Dietrich von Hildebrand was sounding
- 4:43the alarm about the Nazis as early as the 1920s. He had
- 4:47ended up fleeing Europe with his family because Hitler wanted him dead.
- 4:52Listen to this bold statement. He said, the soldier of Christ is obligated
- 4:57to fight against sin and error. His attitude is one of true love.
- 5:03But those who flee from the inevitable battle and treat
- 5:06ironically those who have gone astray,
- 5:10obfuscating their error and playing down the revolt against
- 5:13God, are fundamentally victims of egoism
- 5:18and complacency. Think about that.
- 5:23When was the last time you heard from the pulpit the soldier
- 5:27of Christ is obligated to fight against sin and error?
- 5:31When was the last time you were told that a commitment to fighting against sin
- 5:36and error is a very authentic form of love,
- 5:40a robust and mandatory form of love.
- 5:44And that downplaying sin, which is revolt against God,
- 5:49hiding the horror of sin, does no one favors
- 5:53and is an indictment of cowardice against those who
- 5:57are unwilling to preach the gospel, as St. Paul said to Timothy,
- 6:01both in season and out of season. Again, let me
- 6:04know in the show notes. Contact me at thestationofthecross.com/askfather.
- 6:10So let's follow the good examples and the bold words of both Spurgeon and
- 6:14von Hildebrand, and let's admit that we
- 6:18have an obligation to God and to neighbor to
- 6:22tell the truth about sin, tell the truth about love, and to tell
- 6:26the truth about God. In our prayer,
- 6:29let us cry out, Lord, what will become of sinners?
- 6:33And in our prayer, let's also cry out, Lord, what will
- 6:37become of preachers?
- 6:41That's important too,
- 6:44because the preachers are the first line, the first
- 6:48point of contact, the, the forward face
- 6:52of the church. Calling sinners back to Christ.
- 6:57And preachers, myself included— Lord have
- 7:01mercy— will face a terrible judgment because
- 7:05the saving word has been entrusted to us.
- 7:08And I cry out with Saint Paul, woe to me if
- 7:12I do not preach the gospel. So pray for all the sinners you
- 7:17know— that would be everybody, all of us, including me— and pray too for
- 7:21those who bear the burden of the office of preaching.
- 7:26Intercede for them. Encourage them. Work with
- 7:30them. Meanwhile, think on these things today. Take them to prayer.
- 7:34Talk about it with those you love. Go in peace. And please do pray
- 7:38for me, for I am a sinner.
