- 0:33Welcome to drive through episode number 19.
- 0:36This is our monthly recap where we put together a menu of automotive,
- 0:40motorsport, and random car adjacent news.
- 0:42Now let's pull up to window number one for some automotive news.
- 0:46Before we head into automotive news, I want to make a special announcement.
- 0:50Guess what folks?
- 0:51This is the last episode Of season two, not the last episode of the show, but the
- 0:58last episode of season two, 56 episodes into this season, we are wrapping it up
- 1:04with drive through episode number 19.
- 1:07And as always, we aimed please.
- 1:10So it's going to be a fun one.
- 1:11And we'll talk more about what season two look like in case you're tuning in maybe
- 1:15for the first time and don't know, or maybe miss some episodes along the way.
- 1:19I think we got to start off this month, following up.
- 1:22With last month.
- 1:23And so, you know, we talked a lot about cars that were becoming zombie cars and
- 1:27disappearing and in a number of station wagons that aren't being produced this
- 1:31year and next year and things like that.
- 1:33And we missed something really, really important vehicles that
- 1:36are still available in 2022 with manual transmissions.
- 1:40My one question is, can you still get a 2016 Dodge Dart with a manual transmission
- 1:46with a warranty that your local Dodge dealer I'm surprised by the M3 and the
- 1:51M4 because the previous generation, a lot of the reviews that came out about
- 1:57them said that the car was better.
- 1:59With the dual clutch, I guess the, the auto transmission
- 2:03setup compared to the manual.
- 2:05It said it was just a better driving experience.
- 2:07So I'm actually surprised that they are still catering to the enthusiast by
- 2:12putting the manual in these two cars.
- 2:14So clearly.
- 2:15Brad hasn't scrolled through the entire list if he's being shocked
- 2:19off the bat, shocked off the bat with that one, because I didn't know
- 2:24the Chevy spark came as a manual.
- 2:27Wait, isn't the Chevy sparky an electric only car?
- 2:30Is it a hybrid either way?
- 2:32That's weird.
- 2:33No, it's an econo box, right?
- 2:35It's the, it's the generation of the geo metro.
- 2:38You know that, that heritage, that, that there, the vault.
- 2:40The vault is the, is the little electric one.
- 2:43So you brought up the spark, the Camaro's on this list, the
- 2:46Challenger is on this list.
- 2:47But aren't all these cars headed to the graveyard?
- 2:49Didn't they stop production of the Camaro?
- 2:51So what, these are the ones that are, to your point about the Dodge Dart,
- 2:54the ones that are left over on the lot.
- 2:56In the article, there's an entire list of all these cars.
- 2:58There's actually 34 vehicles in 2022.
- 3:01I think that's pretty impressive.
- 3:02That still come with a manual transmission from the factory.
- 3:05I agree with you on the BMW, but there were rumors, not really rumors
- 3:09so much as complaints a couple of years ago by BMW owners saying,
- 3:13why did you get rid of the manual?
- 3:15You know, then you heard the other side of the coin BMW say, we're going
- 3:18to be the last ones with the manual.
- 3:19We're going to be the last ones, you know, with a petrol engine
- 3:22and all this kind of stuff.
- 3:23So.
- 3:23I don't know what's truth and what's not.
- 3:25I'm glad to see BMW sticking to offering a manual transmission.
- 3:30I will say it's better for the track, especially with
- 3:33the gyros and safety software.
- 3:36I've coached some of these M4s and stuff and tracks like Shenandoah.
- 3:40You know, you get up on an embankment and the car freaks out.
- 3:42It thinks it's flipping over shuts down at least, you know, with a manual,
- 3:46you can pop it in neutral, keep going.
- 3:48And it's not just dead in the middle of the track.
- 3:50Like I experienced with one of my students, I'd say things that did surprise
- 3:54me on this list were the two Cadillacs.
- 3:57See, y'all are boring with your things surprising you.
- 4:00I'm surprised to see that there are Mitsubishis!
- 4:03Are still being made here?
- 4:05Or, not made here, but being sold here?
- 4:08What's a Mitsubishi?
- 4:09I don't know what that is.
- 4:10Exactly!
- 4:10Y'all are getting hung up on Cadillac and Meredith Sennett.
- 4:13There is a Mitsub two Mitsubishis!
- 4:16And you can get a manual folks.
- 4:18What really surprises me is the Ford Bronco.
- 4:21I didn't realize I didn't know a manual like you, I knew the Jeeps.
- 4:25I mean, I had a couple of manual Jeeps, but I had no idea you could
- 4:28get the Bronco with the EcoBoost motor and the manual transmission.
- 4:32That is pretty surprising.
- 4:33I didn't, I didn't think that was the thing.
- 4:35Now, all the rest of these, the Hondas, the Hyundais, the GTIs and the
- 4:39Subarus, there's no surprise there.
- 4:41There's always going to be some car with a manual transmission,
- 4:44same with the Porsches, right?
- 4:45The 911 seems to always, you know, despite the PDK being better, there's always going
- 4:50to be a manual option for the enthusiasts, the car I'm most excited about on this
- 4:54list, because I want to go test drive one as soon as they come out is the Z.
- 4:59The spark.
- 5:00No, the Z 400, right?
- 5:01The Nissan.
- 5:02I think that's really cool.
- 5:04And at the dollar value that the Z is coming in at, that's
- 5:07going to be a driver's car.
- 5:08That's going to be an enthusiast car.
- 5:10And I'm really excited about that.
- 5:12I think the only other one that got my attention that was a little
- 5:15out of left field, and still in the realm of the Bronco and the Jeeps,
- 5:19was that you can get a Tacoma in 2022 with a manual transmission.
- 5:23Always, I think like the Wrangler, you'll always be able to get a manual Tacoma.
- 5:28As long as they make the Tacoma, I will say that there, there is a car that's
- 5:32not on this list that is sad panda.
- 5:35It's the, uh, the Corvette.
- 5:37It's a shame that they don't offer the Corvette or the manual transmission.
- 5:40We knew that the C8 we knew, but I mean, I wonder what cars were on this
- 5:45list before like the previous year, the year before that, that are no
- 5:48longer on the list and which, which ones of those are disappointing.
- 5:51You're right.
- 5:52And you know, we, we would need to do that comparison or maybe some
- 5:55of our listeners already know that information, but you know what?
- 5:57You're right about the Corvette.
- 5:58I didn't even dawn on me.
- 6:00I kept thinking maybe there was a manual C8 out there, but I guess there isn't.
- 6:04So again, some of this is.
- 6:07No surprise, like the Miatas and the Mini Coopers and stuff.
- 6:10And there are a few shockers on here to include the Mitsubishi
- 6:15that Tanya pointed out.
- 6:17Something else that we missed during the whole shuffle of last month in
- 6:20the Winter Recap, Road Track announced the 2022 Performance Car of the Year.
- 6:27At what point do they say what it is?
- 6:29There's like 15 cars listed.
- 6:31Let me break it down for you.
- 6:32This is classic TLDR too long.
- 6:36Didn't read.
- 6:36Even I got bored about a third of the way through this article and
- 6:40I was like, just get to the point.
- 6:43I found it.
- 6:47I'll get to the point.
- 6:49The winner was the 9 11.
- 6:50Woo ha, whatever.
- 6:53But if you look at this list of cars, it is such a just menagerie, just
- 6:59potpourri of different vehicles.
- 7:01It didn't make sense.
- 7:02How can you declare a winner?
- 7:04When on one end of the spectrum, you have the Volkswagen GTI and on the other
- 7:08side, you have the latest Lamborghini.
- 7:11And then all these cars in between like the Merc and the Cadillac
- 7:14and the Bentley, like whatever.
- 7:16Because this was no ordinary Porsche.
- 7:20As it says, it's God's own Porsche.
- 7:23Oh my God.
- 7:23Yeah, whatever.
- 7:25Much like the Consumer Reports stuff that comes out every year,
- 7:28when you enter the same car twice, aka the Burrs and the Furs, right?
- 7:34The 86, Subaru, and the Toyota as two separate entries in a contest
- 7:39like this, I'm like, yeah, you don't know what the hell you're doing.
- 7:41The same car, end of story.
- 7:43I think they put this list together.
- 7:45These were the only cars where manufacturers had microchips for them.
- 7:50So they were, these are the only cars they were able to deliver at the time.
- 7:52And I love how the Subaru BRZ weighs more than the Toyota GR 86.
- 7:58And it weighs more and costs less.
- 8:00So it's a better value.
- 8:01You get more for less money.
- 8:06Oh, what a mess.
- 8:08So which one's the winner?
- 8:09Which one's the winner?
- 8:10She said the nine 11.
- 8:11It was the Porsche.
- 8:12Yeah.
- 8:13And if you look at it from the hyper cars on one side or the super luxury
- 8:17cars, like the Bentley, you know, continental GT and all that stuff.
- 8:20And then the econo boxes basically on the other side, the Porsche sits
- 8:23in the middle, almost by itself.
- 8:25It's going to win.
- 8:26In almost every category between speed handling styling, all that kind of stuff.
- 8:32And it's like, was this really a fair fight?
- 8:34And the other thing I thought that wasn't fair about this article is we've got 2
- 8:39entries that are the same car and we're talking about performance vehicles.
- 8:43Let's let's call it what it is sports cars.
- 8:45There's not a single mention of a Miata on this list or the C8 Corvette.
- 8:53Exactly.
- 8:54And I'm like, what?
- 8:56So you replace one of the Burrs Furs with a Miata.
- 8:59You replace the GTI with a Corvette because it's the only
- 9:03hatchback hot hatch in this.
- 9:04It's a hot hatch.
- 9:06It's not a sports car.
- 9:07If they're trying to do sports cars.
- 9:09The GTI, I love the GTI.
- 9:11I have one.
- 9:12You have one.
- 9:12That will everybody we know has one.
- 9:15It's not a sports car though.
- 9:16No, it's a compact hatchback.
- 9:18It's cool.
- 9:19They're fun, but it's not, it doesn't fight in this fight.
- 9:22Right.
- 9:22Everything else on here is rear wheel drive.
- 9:24It's the only front wheel drive car.
- 9:26I'm like, I don't know, whatever.
- 9:28Oh, I would think the Bentley is all wheel drive.
- 9:31True.
- 9:31And the Lambo too.
- 9:33Rear wheel bias, right?
- 9:34So yeah, I agree with you though.
- 9:36The GTI doesn't fit for me.
- 9:37And the double burrs.
- 9:39Separated should be combined and then add the C8.
- 9:41In other news, we got to now talk about our showcase this month.
- 9:45And for the first time ever in the drive through, we have
- 9:48Ferrari as our showcase brand.
- 9:50So Tanya, let's talk about what's going on over our favorite
- 9:55manufacturer from Maranello.
- 9:56Apparently our friends at Ferrari, uh, you know, trying to keep up with the
- 10:00Joneses, even though they shouldn't.
- 10:02And I think they had alluded to this a while ago, but unfortunately.
- 10:07What could have just been a rumor and a concept is apparently coming to fruition.
- 10:11Say it ain't so, say it ain't so, but the Ferrari, SUV on its way.
- 10:23Yes, I did say the word SUV.
- 10:26And Ferrari in the same sentence.
- 10:28I have blasphemed.
- 10:31Didn't Ferrari's CEO over the last, like, decade say that
- 10:37they will never make an SUV?
- 10:39Never say never.
- 10:41This is the automotive equivalent.
- 10:43of when the roof on Notre Dame fell in.
- 10:46Like, we're, this is sacrilege.
- 10:49Ferrari's building an SUV.
- 10:51You're lying to me.
- 10:53I will say, based on the picture, its stance makes it look less SUV and more
- 10:59slightly smaller compact crossover.
- 11:02No, that's even worse!
- 11:04That's even what that means.
- 11:05It's a Fiat Multipla with a freaking Ferrari badge on it.
- 11:09At least if it was the Maserati rebranded or an Estelvio or
- 11:14something, I could get over it.
- 11:15But no.
- 11:16Compact crossover, Frank, get out of here.
- 11:18I mean, it's very much camouflaged to the point of they didn't
- 11:23put Vinyl camouflage on it.
- 11:25They literally have like car cover on it is all you can
- 11:30really see is the windshield.
- 11:31So the true body lines are hard to discern.
- 11:35However, it doesn't look like, you know, a Ford Explorer or something.
- 11:39Terrible.
- 11:39What are they calling this turd?
- 11:42The pure blood as it's translated.
- 11:46The Puro Sangue.
- 11:48Yes.
- 11:48Yes.
- 11:49The pure blood.
- 11:50Can you believe that?
- 11:50Can really, really.
- 11:52Real.
- 11:52That is, that's a terrible name for a Ferrari idea.
- 11:58This is Amos.
- 12:00This is, this is a bunch of the eye.
- 12:02This is like that company that we thought died.
- 12:05That's still around Mitsubishi naming their SUV.
- 12:08The eclipse.
- 12:09Anyone want to wager how much it's going to cost?
- 12:13100, 000.
- 12:15How much does a Lamborghini cost?
- 12:16And then add like a 50, 000 to it.
- 12:19So apparently this thing is going to be north of, well, it
- 12:23could start as high as 350, 000.
- 12:26What?
- 12:27Come on.
- 12:28So I can expect to see these in my kids schools parking lot.
- 12:36They make a lot of bespoke Ferraris, if there's truly this demand, which I'm
- 12:41curious to know, is there demand for like, are people clamoring to have an SUV?
- 12:46If not, they should have just made some bespoke ones.
- 12:48Like I could have lived with like, Oh, there's only three in the
- 12:51world, but not something worth.
- 12:53Ferrari owners are tired of driving their Porsche McCanns.
- 12:57That's that's what it is.
- 12:58And bed Yagas and whatever.
- 13:01All right.
- 13:02So they've lost their minds and it seems like there are a list of
- 13:06other things that they're trying.
- 13:07Ferrari is also busy reinventing the wheel, if you will, not the literal
- 13:13wheel, but the windshield wiper.
- 13:17So Tesla, look out, you got some competition to your laser beams.
- 13:21Are they partnering with Tesla?
- 13:23No, their idea is using compressed air across the windshield, which
- 13:31I like better than the laser beam
- 13:35because at least I'm not going to have like my retinas burned.
- 13:38Yes.
- 13:38The laser is not going to be that strong.
- 13:40They actually still plan to have a wiper blade.
- 13:43So it's this weird, like.
- 13:45Compressed air plus wiper blakes.
- 13:47They want a smaller blade.
- 13:48That's lower profile.
- 13:49That's not affecting their aerodynamics, which most of the days, the windshield
- 13:54wipers tucked down underneath, you know, the top of the hood kind of
- 13:57tucked in under the cowl anyway.
- 13:59So what, how is it really impacting your dynamics?
- 14:02I mean, if you're using them and you're going that fast, it doesn't matter.
- 14:05Anyway, you're losing speed.
- 14:07The last time, if your car is slippery enough, just like we
- 14:11talked about the Cybertruck.
- 14:12You don't need the windshield wipers put a little rain X on
- 14:15there and the uncompressed air as you're driving will dissipate
- 14:20the water off of your windshield.
- 14:22Here's the problem with this.
- 14:23This is literally cutting your nose off despite your face.
- 14:26We're going to develop this highly intricate compressed air
- 14:29miniature wiper blade system.
- 14:34to save on something totally idiotic and add 150 pounds of gizmos that'll
- 14:41break when I can go to Walmart and buy a regular wiper blade for 11 bucks.
- 14:47I mean this like anything else is just Then having an idea and what do you do
- 14:52when you have an idea you patent it so somebody else can't take it doesn't mean
- 14:56they're actually ever going to use it in this application but it precludes
- 15:00anybody else from doing it so I mean yes this is they're doing exactly what they
- 15:04should do now in 10 years if they actually do this we can criticize them more.
- 15:09I mean like I said before the patent trade office is full of bad ideas
- 15:13what I'm wondering though is You guys know what it sounds like when
- 15:18your wiper blades are like worn out.
- 15:23So what does it sound like when you're driving in the rain and your
- 15:26micro wiper blade is worn out and you've run out of compressed air?
- 15:30Is it like,
- 15:33it's nothing.
- 15:33Cause you creamed off the road.
- 15:34Cause you couldn't see what we're not discussing is how 99.
- 15:42999 percent of Ferrari drivers, their cars never see rain street.
- 15:47Or the rain or anything and never see the outside of a garage.
- 15:50So who is this wiper for?
- 15:53This is not the only thing they're patenting.
- 15:56Oh, really?
- 15:57So they're on a patent from me, a frenzy, a role, whatever forefront of innovation.
- 16:02And they will not be left behind just like they will not be left
- 16:05behind with this whole SUV thing.
- 16:07That's decades old, even though they're last, they're not going to be last on EVs.
- 16:14They are patenting.
- 16:16a battery layout for mid ship mounted batteries.
- 16:20Whenever they do unveil whatever EV they're working on, they want to retain
- 16:26the weight balance of their Ferraris today that are all mid engine, etc, etc.
- 16:30So they, some, I don't know enough about The battery placement and how it warrants
- 16:35the patents, but they're patenting the location, uh, or I guess the setup, the
- 16:40assembly of these batteries to be quote mid engine in their, in their cars.
- 16:45This is something I can get behind.
- 16:47This is something that makes sense outside of these other, just things
- 16:50that are complete lunacy, because if they can make the battery pack.
- 16:56Dimensionally fit in that space and way about the same as the petrol
- 17:00motor that they're pulling out with some sort of transaxle direct power
- 17:05to the rear wheels and all that.
- 17:06I think it makes sense because they're going to have a performance.
- 17:10EV something that can actually handle unlike a lot of these, you know, I get it.
- 17:15They do it low center of gravity and they try to disperse the weight across the car.
- 17:18But if they can make a one for one, what is Ferrari care about range?
- 17:22Because to Brad's point, these people are either maybe they're
- 17:25using them at the track.
- 17:26Driving to somewhere or they sit in the garage a lot of the time.
- 17:29So why not make something as close to the OE as possible?
- 17:34And lastly, in case you were now getting that little itch for all things, Ferrari,
- 17:39it was announced very recently director Michael Mann, if anyone's familiar with.
- 17:45His work.
- 17:47I'm not.
- 17:49He and I think the person who wrote script on the Italian job are collaborating
- 17:54for this director's passion project, which is a movie about Ferrari, the man.
- 18:00So this movie apparently is going to take place back in the
- 18:03fifties and be focused on Mr.
- 18:05Enzo himself.
- 18:07I like this idea.
- 18:09I looked at the cast photo and I thought this was an article for that
- 18:12new House of Gucci movie, because isn't it like the same people?
- 18:16Is this a sequel to that movie?
- 18:17Like, what is this?
- 18:18It's not the same people.
- 18:19It is the same main male character.
- 18:23So Adam Driver is again, Playing an Italian gentleman.
- 18:27He was playing Mr.
- 18:28Gucci and house of Gucci.
- 18:30Now he's going to play Enzo in this movie, but instead of Lady Gaga,
- 18:34we have Penelope Cruz playing, I guess his wife or whatever.
- 18:39The name I haven't heard in about 20 years.
- 18:42Yeah.
- 18:42She hasn't really done much, has she?
- 18:45Yeah.
- 18:45She, what was the last movie she was in?
- 18:47I can't, I can't remember vanilla sky.
- 18:50No, no.
- 18:50That pirates of the Caribbean movie.
- 18:52Oh, good one.
- 18:56Caribbean, the Caribbean, Caribbeanos.
- 19:00Well, before this turns into a, you know, Steve and Izzy show, shout out, we'll have
- 19:07to catch this one with them in the future.
- 19:09Whenever this eventually comes out.
- 19:12Not much to report on this, but it is a movie that's coming.
- 19:15They got to get it all lined up.
- 19:16So it's not in production yet.
- 19:18It's like rush or Ford versus Ferrari, something like that.
- 19:21It could be fun.
- 19:22You know, it's one of those sort of mockumentary almost types of films.
- 19:26So there's no bad guy here.
- 19:27I mean, who are they going to, who's, who's going to play the villain, right?
- 19:29I mean, whatever, we'll see.
- 19:30It could be, it could be fun.
- 19:31It could be entertaining.
- 19:32I guess we got to move on and we got to talk about Porsche, Audi and VW news.
- 19:37So what's hot right now?
- 19:38Or maybe what's not right now?
- 19:40Well, a little bit of sad news to start off, I guess,
- 19:43depends on your point of view.
- 19:44Some people probably care less.
- 19:47Some people might be happy.
- 19:49And then there'll be some that are sad to see the, I don't know
- 19:52that it's iconic, but it's been around for quite a long time.
- 19:56The Volkswagen Passat is finally taking its last cruise as a Finally discontinued
- 20:04that model and the last vehicles have rolled off the assembly line down in
- 20:08Chattanooga, and they've been fitted as Chattanooga anniversary edition.
- 20:12So there's, I know we talked about this some time ago that they
- 20:15said they were going to do this.
- 20:16So there's a bunch of Tennessee touches and inside and things like that for the
- 20:21last model, but essentially the facade.
- 20:24Even though it was not the Passat when it first came over has been in
- 20:28the US at least since the early 70s, when it was known as the Dasher.
- 20:34And then it became the Quantum.
- 20:36And then it became the Passat.
- 20:38So it's had a long history here.
- 20:40It's taken a couple body shapes to get to the most recent rendition, which has
- 20:45always kind of been the larger sedan It was always class larger than the
- 20:50Jetta in terms of size, but, and now the Jetta, I guess, is the new Passat because
- 20:54they're the same size, but we digress.
- 20:57There's an interesting video in this article where they, they found like
- 21:02the original clip from like 79 or something like that of when the Passat
- 21:06came to the United States, because it came here later than when it was
- 21:09introduced in Europe, obviously.
- 21:11And if you watch it, it's like this.
- 21:13Yuppie guy in California, this man, and you're the guy that
- 21:15he breaks the fourth wall.
- 21:17And the narrator asked him, well, why are you buying a Dasher?
- 21:20And he's like, well, it's better than buying a Buick.
- 21:22And I immediately, I thought to myself how that was foreshadowing at that time,
- 21:28because Passat just basically became a big old marshmallow Buick in its last runs.
- 21:35I mean, it's, it's the rental car of rental cars.
- 21:37It's the German Camry.
- 21:38I mean, it's just like, Blah.
- 21:41And what I think they failed to do with the Passat, they should
- 21:44have gone in the direction of Cadillac with like the V cars.
- 21:48Like they never had a sport version of the Passat that was worth anything.
- 21:53They had a few trim packages and the W8 and every once in a while they'd
- 21:57throw us a bone, but in general, as Tanya would say, it was vanilla.
- 22:03It drove like vanilla.
- 22:04The Passat was just boring.
- 22:06It was always boring.
- 22:08And even as a VW, diehard VW guy, I'm not sad to see it go.
- 22:12And then unfortunately to make matters worse, the best and last
- 22:16Passat, in my opinion, was the B5.
- 22:185.
- 22:19But even that was an Audi and not really a Passat.
- 22:23So it's like, eh, whatever.
- 22:25Those are the ones that came four motion, the first four motions.
- 22:27Correct.
- 22:28That was also the one that came with the W8 motor.
- 22:30Those were nice.
- 22:31They were a good size.
- 22:32They were good looking.
- 22:34They were the equivalent of the eighties Volvo.
- 22:37I mean, they were that, you know, kind of exciting.
- 22:39But when you, they were, they were Volkswagen's version of the E 39 BMW.
- 22:44Exactly.
- 22:45Exactly.
- 22:46It was just like a nice, handsome midsize sedan sports sedan.
- 22:50Like I said, there's sort of other cool possessed, like the one with no grill.
- 22:55As long as it had the VR six.
- 22:56Right.
- 22:57'cause it was one of the early VR six cars.
- 22:58That was cool.
- 23:00But like some of the other stuff, you're just like, eh, whatev, whatever.
- 23:03Like nobody cares.
- 23:04And that's why it's not sticking around.
- 23:06I hate to say it because nobody cares.
- 23:08They, they kind of replaced it with the Aron or the a, whatever
- 23:12the hell that car's called.
- 23:14The The Aton.
- 23:14The Aton.
- 23:16No, I was behind one of those.
- 23:18I was behind one of those.
- 23:20I was like, oh, look at you.
- 23:21Yeah.
- 23:21The Arton, is that what it's called?
- 23:23Yeah, the, the, the, the Una.
- 23:25Yeah.
- 23:26. Yeah, that one.
- 23:27I mean, so is it, is the Passat really dead?
- 23:29Who, who knows?
- 23:30But even then it got weird with the Fon and all this other stuff
- 23:34and it's like, is it an A eight?
- 23:35Is it 86?
- 23:37Like, I don't know.
- 23:38It's like who cares?
- 23:39I think the Fayton was more Bentley than anything else.
- 23:42The Fayton was actually a really cool for features and everything.
- 23:46I think it was far past an a eight of its time.
- 23:49Because whoever commissioned that car to be built, I can't remember the names
- 23:53of anybody that worked at VW at that time, but they wanted that car to be the
- 23:57best car on the road that all that was Ferdinand PX, like mission is to make
- 24:02the smooth, you know, to beat Lexus, to have the smoothest, most luxurious,
- 24:07all steel construction vehicle, the fate and Wade, like a semi truck and
- 24:12it's basically an aid underneath.
- 24:13And the sheet metal on the outside, it was like a bloated B5 Passat.
- 24:17It still had the same styling cues.
- 24:19So that was what was hard to swallow of that car was like,
- 24:22I'm going to be bland looking.
- 24:23Yeah.
- 24:24You're going to pay 90 grand for a fat Passat.
- 24:26I'm like, yeah, whatever.
- 24:27Get out of here.
- 24:28You waited a year.
- 24:29You could pay 10 grand.
- 24:31Yeah.
- 24:31And then all the maintenance on the W12 would have cost you 80 grand.
- 24:35Yeah.
- 24:35Nine, nine, nine.
- 24:35Yeah.
- 24:3680, 90 ran on maintenance.
- 24:37For the other things that confuse me and disappoint me just like the Passat
- 24:43is this next article, yet another Pikes Peak Porsche e tron records
- 24:48like I tried to read this article I read it three times and I'm confused.
- 24:52Hopefully our audience will get it because I sure don't do the Porsche won the record
- 24:56for the largest elevation change in one.
- 25:00Is that what I'm understanding?
- 25:01Is that a record we were looking to beat?
- 25:04It's like a baseball record.
- 25:05You know, the greatest, most hits wearing two left shoes or most of the strikeouts
- 25:12wearing tennis shoes with red laces.
- 25:15I don't know.
- 25:15It's, it's all bullshit.
- 25:17I mean, I didn't understand that one picture of them.
- 25:19It looks like they're in a, like a coal mine or something.
- 25:21Yeah, that's, I think that's, I think that's the point in order
- 25:24to hit that altitude record that actually started down in this mine
- 25:27and they drove out of the mine.
- 25:30Okay.
- 25:30So it had to do a little bit of very light off roading if you will.
- 25:35It's a record Porsche now owns.
- 25:37It's also a record that Porsche is the only one who's attempted, right?
- 25:43The Guinness book of world records is full of that shit.
- 25:46But speaking of records being broken, apparently Lamborghini, somebody
- 25:51aftermarket tuning people, they took a twin turbo Lamborghini Huracan
- 25:55to the drag strip and they took it to Bradenton Motorsports Park in
- 26:01Florida to do a quarter mile run.
- 26:03And they, as it says, cross the finish line clocked at 7.
- 26:0954 seconds with 186.
- 26:1241 miles an hour top speed understood to be quote, A new best.
- 26:17And that that time is enough to humiliate the fastest stock production
- 26:21cars out there, including the current king, which is the Rimac Nivera.
- 26:26This is not a production car.
- 26:28First of all, it's on Mickey Thompson slicks.
- 26:31Thank you.
- 26:32Yes.
- 26:32If you put a RIMAC on Mickey Thompson slicks and you slap however much money
- 26:38was spent on this kit into one of those cars, I'm sure you would beat it.
- 26:43I don't even think you'd have to do that because the RIMAC on summer
- 26:47Michelin pilot sport tires did an 8.
- 26:5058.
- 26:51In the quarter mile.
- 26:52So put drags on that and let's see what it does.
- 26:55Yeah.
- 26:55All right.
- 26:56Put drag slicks.
- 26:57And yeah, none of this is important because an eight
- 27:00second car is slow as dirt.
- 27:02I don't give a crap if it's a twin turbo Lamborghini or the rim back seven and
- 27:07a half to eight and a half seconds.
- 27:09Just like, you know, Toretto, you owe me a 10 second car.
- 27:11That's slow.
- 27:12I mean, there's Teslas that are faster than this.
- 27:15There's other cars that are faster than this caveat with
- 27:17this was it's street legal car.
- 27:19There's plenty.
- 27:21No, that's BS.
- 27:23And there's plenty of pro stock cars out there and plenty of American
- 27:26muscle, big block cars that will blow the doors off of both of these
- 27:29that are street legal, quote unquote.
- 27:32So this is, this is a bunch of hype and that that twin turbo kit.
- 27:35Okay.
- 27:36That's what the same twin TUR kit that's available for the R
- 27:39eight 'cause it's basically the same motor and all that stuff.
- 27:41Who cares?
- 27:42This is old news.
- 27:43Speaking of old news, we ask a lot of times on the pit stop.
- 27:47If you were the last person in the boardroom to cast a vote and
- 27:51the vote is between the 9 59 and the F 40, which would you choose?
- 27:56So far, all of our guests have answered.
- 28:00F 40, but have given a justification for why the 9 59 is quote
- 28:05unquote, technologically superior.
- 28:07And so I found it interesting that our friends over at the Porsche Club
- 28:11of America, who by the way, have kicked off their own podcast recently,
- 28:15they put together an article talking about nine interesting facts that
- 28:18you might not know about the 9 59.
- 28:21And what's really important about this article and the research that went
- 28:25into it is that when you stand back.
- 28:28and look at what is being shown, you have to put it into the
- 28:32context of the time period.
- 28:34So you look at, Oh, twin turbo, big deal, four wheel drive, whatever, manual
- 28:39transmission and all these different kinds of things, you know, off road capability.
- 28:43You're like, whatever, there's tons of cars that have that now.
- 28:45But when you bring this back to late 1980s technology, built
- 28:51on top of 70s 911 chassis.
- 28:54This was a supercar.
- 28:55This was Porsche's first real production supercar.
- 28:59These things are record setting.
- 29:01These are real records being broken by Porsche.
- 29:04These are pushing the boundaries of what could be done at that time
- 29:08in the automotive and really in the motor sports world as well.
- 29:11And so, When you compare the 959 to the F40, the 959 is hands
- 29:18down technologically superior.
- 29:20The F40 was primitive.
- 29:22It was still based on, you know, like the 288 GTOs and things like that.
- 29:25It had some Formula One technology in it, but not in the same way that the 959 did.
- 29:30So I think this is a really solid read.
- 29:32And my good friend, Manny Alban, who I've known for many,
- 29:34many years, put this together.
- 29:36And I gotta give him a shout out.
- 29:38So when you have the chance, be sure to check out Porsche
- 29:40Club of America's new podcast.
- 29:42It's called the PCA Insider.
- 29:43And Manny is also one of the hosts on that show.
- 29:46And I wish them all the best of luck as they're building out their platform.
- 29:49So I think that wraps up our Porsche, Audi, and VW news for the month.
- 29:53Let's transition now to the rest of Lower Saxony and talk about what's
- 29:58going on over at Mercedes and BMW.
- 30:00Somebody woke up, woke up and realized those ugly kidney, not kidney grill
- 30:07things, beaver teeth, not a good look.
- 30:10No, bucktooth beaver BMW might be sun setting lies.
- 30:16Newer models have smaller sized proportionate grills.
- 30:21Those two giant grills, at least on the car, we're only
- 30:24on the M three and the M four.
- 30:27I don't think I saw them on any of the other regular.
- 30:29The Xs and the sevens.
- 30:31Not really.
- 30:32I don't remember seeing those giant.
- 30:33But the trucks have those huge grills.
- 30:36Remember they compared them, the grills on the front of an X five are bigger
- 30:40than the whole front end of an E30.
- 30:42Like they're just ginormous.
- 30:43Maybe this goes in line with them returning the manual
- 30:46transmission to the M3 and the M4.
- 30:48Maybe they're starting to listen to their customer base.
- 30:50You know, the enthusiast saying, Hey.
- 30:52BMW, what the hell are you doing?
- 30:54They thought the bangle period was bad.
- 30:55This stuff is just insane.
- 30:57And I know we've had guests on that sing the praises of the new BMWs,
- 31:01early adopters, all that kind of thing.
- 31:03And I have to agree with some other folks that have been on the show.
- 31:06People buy with their eyes.
- 31:08And if it's ugly, it's ugly.
- 31:10They ain't gonna buy it.
- 31:11People buy with it.
- 31:12Well, I don't have to see it when I'm sitting on the inside.
- 31:15That's very true too, but I would be embarrassed
- 31:21all kidding aside.
- 31:22I mean, I'm glad that they're changing back to something that is more iconic BMW.
- 31:25I don't want to call it pleasant to the eyes or more appealing.
- 31:30I want to label it as iconic BMW.
- 31:33I looked at that car and went, it looks like a BMW.
- 31:35Like every good concept prototype.
- 31:38Spy photo, what is there and what is reality?
- 31:42They might slap those huge grills back on it again.
- 31:45So, you know, I've seen some other, they're going to do it with the eight.
- 31:48They're going to do it with the four.
- 31:49They're going to do with a bunch of other models.
- 31:51They're already showing the new models coming out and they have the smaller
- 31:54girls, not these big monstrosity things.
- 31:57That's going to make those giant grilled cars, collector's cars.
- 32:01It's a very limited run.
- 32:03Maybe that was their plan this whole time.
- 32:05Mm-Hmm.
- 32:05. Mm-Hmm.
- 32:06. If you're in the, uh, market for a touring wagon, BMW will Sure to delight you
- 32:13with the upcoming 20 23 3 series wagon.
- 32:17Just as long as you don't live in the United States and you
- 32:19live in Europe, , they're even making an M three version as well.
- 32:24I'm okay with all of this.
- 32:26You had me at Wagon and I will say previous.
- 32:30Generation three series and even five series station
- 32:34wagons are good looking wagons.
- 32:36They lend themselves well to the BMW physique, to the design.
- 32:40I like them.
- 32:41I've never not liked them.
- 32:42I haven't seen an ugly wagon yet.
- 32:44And thankfully, I think the wagons missed the whole weird front end phase.
- 32:48So I'm okay with this.
- 32:50Now I will say this.
- 32:51It looks a little big.
- 32:53The belt line looks a little high, kind of reminds me of the
- 32:56Volvos where they're just sort of.
- 32:59stretched up, you know, maybe with a set of nice wheels, like an M2 has or M3 or
- 33:04some sort of M sport package or whatever.
- 33:06I'm excited for this.
- 33:08And I don't say that very often about BMW, but I am excited about this.
- 33:12We can now finally say that there is no Stellantis news this month.
- 33:15So we're going to take a moment of quick silence in honor.
- 33:19There being no Stellantis news.
- 33:21Well, none that we're apparently aware of.
- 33:25I mean, we already talked about Stellantis news.
- 33:27The challenger comes with a manual again.
- 33:30Oh, okay.
- 33:30All right.
- 33:31All right.
- 33:31So yes.
- 33:31All right.
- 33:32The record is still in place.
- 33:34There is always Mopar news.
- 33:36To talk about, but we do have to switch to our other domestic news
- 33:39sponsored in part by American muscle.
- 33:41com.
- 33:41Your number one source for OE performance and replacement parts for your Chevy
- 33:47Ford or Chrysler product Ford and GM worn their dealership network to
- 33:53stop overcharging for brand new cars.
- 33:57Somebody posted the other day and I was completely flabbergasted by this.
- 34:02One of the sticker ads for a brand new Ford pickup truck.
- 34:06Now I know the prices of vehicles have been going through the roof, but to
- 34:09see a 52, 000 dealer markup, I get the 1997, you know, dealer, what was that?
- 34:18The destination charge?
- 34:19We talked about the last time, but 52 grand for what?
- 34:23I'll buy another car with that money.
- 34:25What the hell?
- 34:25I get angry at the 595.
- 34:29Pen striping charge.
- 34:31Who the hell is going to pay 52, 000 over sticker?
- 34:34Well, the best part is the pin striping charge is for the pinstripe.
- 34:39You didn't want on the car to begin with.
- 34:41It's already there.
- 34:42Exactly.
- 34:43You got to pay money to get it off.
- 34:45The pickup truck that was posted about it, put it like well into like 130, 000.
- 34:50I'm like, why, who, how, how?
- 34:53I mean, I get that Ford trucks and trucks in general and high demand
- 34:57and things like that, but to 52, 000 markup, I mean, that's bring a trailer
- 35:01crazy levels of asking price in mind at your local dealer, hopefully something
- 35:06course corrects, or the factories can push back on the dealers and say,
- 35:10Hey, you can't, you can make a profit, but you can't make this much profit.
- 35:14Or I think it's going to have to take government legislation to step in and
- 35:17say, you're gouging people, you're ripping people off, or People buy with
- 35:21their eyes, like we said, but they also buy with their wallets and their hearts.
- 35:24And if you walk in and you see that you got to walk away, you should walk
- 35:28away, but you won't walk away because the dealer will slap on 15 year auto
- 35:35loan for a mere six and a half percent.
- 35:41It's like a mortgage.
- 35:42Yeah.
- 35:43No, thanks.
- 35:44Flipping that coin a little bit and talking about the motor sports world.
- 35:46I'm a little bit excited because as I'm diving more into the new changes that
- 35:52are coming for the classing, especially for 2023 Le Mans, we're seeing a
- 35:55lot more GT3 and GT4 entries, right?
- 35:58And there's whole series like SRO that are devoted to GT3 and GT4 and Ford has
- 36:05now officially announced their GT3 plans.
- 36:09for IMSA.
- 36:10And I'm like, awesome.
- 36:12This is great.
- 36:13But we have to wait another two years.
- 36:15I feel like this is a carrot that's being dangled out.
- 36:18I don't think that the Mustang's ever going to go away
- 36:21like the Camaro's gone away.
- 36:23But then again, I'm like, what's going on here?
- 36:26How's this going to work in two years?
- 36:28Is that Mustang going to be a hybrid?
- 36:30Is it still going to be a V8?
- 36:31Is a V8 going to be a thing?
- 36:33How does this work with the Corvette?
- 36:34With the whole balance of power thing?
- 36:36The Mustang's at a disadvantage right now against other cars that are in its class.
- 36:41And so I'm really curious to see how this all plays out.
- 36:44I'm really excited that Ford is coming back.
- 36:47I just wish they were coming back in 23 to compete with everybody else
- 36:51that's going to be on the big stage.
- 36:52We don't know if they're going to be an LMDH, you know,
- 36:55with some sort of prototype.
- 36:57I mean, the Cadillac was.
- 36:58Re revealed again with some new videos and things like that.
- 37:02And it looks super cool.
- 37:03I'm really excited about that.
- 37:04I mean, go GM.
- 37:05That's awesome.
- 37:06I think coming to the stage in 23 without something big from Ford
- 37:10is, I feel like it's a mistake.
- 37:13Yeah.
- 37:13Maybe they did the latest iteration of the Ford GT.
- 37:17A little too soon and they should have timed it from a marketing standpoint, a
- 37:21little differently to coincide with the a hundred years of the, and all that.
- 37:26I'm excited for a GT3 Mustang, mainly because in 30 years, when
- 37:31they're all on racing junk for 15 grand, I had to pick one up.
- 37:36Nice.
- 37:36I like that.
- 37:37That that's forward thinking.
- 37:38That's that's solid strategy there.
- 37:40I like that.
- 37:42You know, I don't generally commute a lot, especially into the city, but I did this
- 37:46month many, many times and, you know, gave me an opportunity to see what's hot on
- 37:51the road, just kind of scanning traffic.
- 37:53And you know what?
- 37:53I spotted, I spotted a Taurus X.
- 37:57Can you believe it?
- 37:57What is a Taurus X?
- 37:59Exactly.
- 38:02It's not a new car.
- 38:03It's a quite an old car.
- 38:04And it's like this Taurus that's not an SUV, is a station wagon,
- 38:10but it's sort of like the original Pacifica when they reintroduced it.
- 38:14Remember that thing that like up on stilts, but it's a wagon, but it's an SUV.
- 38:19And I looked at it and I said, yeah, somebody actually bought one of those.
- 38:22I was really, I was actually really proud of that guy.
- 38:24And I was also proud of the fact that it's still on the road after like 20 years.
- 38:28It was been produced, but again, I didn't know you, you,
- 38:31you mean the Ford freestyle?
- 38:32Is that what it is?
- 38:33This is exactly what it is.
- 38:35Yeah.
- 38:35It looks like a flex too.
- 38:36It's weird.
- 38:37Yeah.
- 38:38It was the Ford freestyle.
- 38:39And then I guess they rebadged it as the Taurus axe to give it, you
- 38:43know, some clout because, you know, the Taurus name carries with it some
- 38:47pedigree, but it replaced the freestyle.
- 38:51Yes.
- 38:51We're just going to leave it right there.
- 38:52It was, yes, it was.
- 38:54Yes.
- 38:56So that being said, all kidding aside, I actually saw.
- 38:59Two Mavericks this month on the road, brand new.
- 39:04Here's my first impression.
- 39:05Explorer sport track.
- 39:07Look at that.
- 39:07And then I went, Oh, no way.
- 39:08It's Maverick.
- 39:09It looks like a sport track at first glance, you know, that weird SUV in
- 39:13the front, mini pickup truck in the back size wise, it's like a step
- 39:18up from the previous Ford Ranger.
- 39:21Like when they stopped making the ranger.
- 39:23So it's actually a decent size.
- 39:24It's not F one 50 big and it's not as big as the ranger.
- 39:29So I think as a, as a small pickup, it's good.
- 39:31It's bigger even than the sport track was, but it's got that shape.
- 39:35The front is reminiscent of the last generation ranger, the pre EcoBoost
- 39:40ranger and all that kind of stuff.
- 39:41I'm not sure what to think of it, but one thing did get my attention.
- 39:45The Maverick on the back is huge.
- 39:48I mean, it reminds me of like a square body Chevy.
- 39:50I mean, it just takes up the whole tailgate.
- 39:52And then it kind of dawned on me.
- 39:53I was like, well, where does the license plate go?
- 39:56And then I spotted it.
- 39:58It's off to the right side of the receiver where the trailer, you
- 40:02know, where the trailer hitch goes.
- 40:03It just looks so awkward.
- 40:05Everything's out of proportion because the license plate sits off to the side.
- 40:09Really low too.
- 40:10It's, it's kind of bizarre.
- 40:11That's the one kind of styling cue that I was just weirded out about.
- 40:15I don't know that I've ever seen one on the road, but I don't know why they
- 40:21needed to make this if they have the Ranger, like when I've heard people
- 40:24talking about this, I thought they were just, it was a trim level of the Ranger.
- 40:28Maybe I didn't realize that it was its own standalone truck.
- 40:32Because looking at it, it, I mean, it looks like it's not body on frame.
- 40:35It looks like it's unibody.
- 40:37So, so I guess the Rangers body on frame, this is unibody.
- 40:40For all we know, it could be a sport track just, you know, with new sheet metal.
- 40:43Yeah.
- 40:43Cause the sport track was based on the Explorer.
- 40:46Overall, I liked it.
- 40:47I will say the first one I saw.
- 40:50I wasn't a fan of the color was this weird blue, the ones you kind of see in
- 40:53the press pictures, it doesn't look as good in real life as it doesn't picture.
- 40:58And the other one was like a, I gotta say it this way.
- 41:01It was like a diarrhea Brown, but it wasn't, it wasn't bad.
- 41:05I mean, I was actually a kid.
- 41:07That's like a paper bag color.
- 41:08That wouldn't be the first color I selected, but you know, whatever.
- 41:11So I was, that was cool.
- 41:13I thought that was neat to see a Maverick on the road.
- 41:15This soon after us talking about it coming, I was like, that's cool.
- 41:19Curious to see what else comes out here in the next year or so.
- 41:22So when does the Raptor version of the Maverick come out?
- 41:26How soon till we start seeing them in a, in an HPDE event?
- 41:29Hey man, send it.
- 41:31We got to talk about our friends over at GM.
- 41:34So they're doing some investment.
- 41:35Obviously they've gotten into the electric car race as well.
- 41:39And they've got a facility in New York locked in components that makes a lot
- 41:44of parts specifically for GM radiators, condensers, HVAC, oil coolers, things
- 41:50like that, and so this facility is actually going to get a big upgrade.
- 41:55Thanks to GM dumping some money into it to build a bunch of.
- 41:58Electric motor components there.
- 42:00So expanding kind of their component train and in us based and bringing
- 42:05jobs and investing in their EV future.
- 42:08We talked about it on a previous drive through where GM was using 3d
- 42:12printing technology to make race parts.
- 42:15Will they be incorporating some of this technology into these EV parts?
- 42:19That's a very good question.
- 42:20Time will tell.
- 42:21I guess.
- 42:21I also feel like GM is spending a lot of money.
- 42:25Every time we turn around, I hear the word GM and investment in the same sentence.
- 42:28Remember they invested a ton of money in Nicola.
- 42:30They invested a ton of money in the Lorton factory.
- 42:32They, and they invested a lot of money in all of these things.
- 42:35What's coming of it?
- 42:36I mean, I get that it takes like a decade for this stuff to come around full circle.
- 42:41They're not paying taxes.
- 42:45There's that, right?
- 42:46They're taking a loss on this, but I feel like.
- 42:48Even Ferrari's going to come to the table with this EV, CUV,
- 42:53monstrosity, pure blood thing before GM gets their first legitimate
- 42:59EV out there that isn't the Volt.
- 43:01So there was the Volt?
- 43:02And the Bolt.
- 43:03No, because they, they're coming up with the lyric.
- 43:06So Cadillacs is supposed to be coming out within the year,
- 43:10late this year, next year.
- 43:11And the Hummer is still GM, right?
- 43:13Nobody else bought it.
- 43:14I don't believe so.
- 43:15I think it's GMC, which is GM.
- 43:17It's, it's all the same.
- 43:18Well, Brad, you know, I'm glad that you're back because we haven't had
- 43:22a lot of Corvette news since you've been absent from the drive thru and
- 43:27suddenly you come back and now there's all this Corvette stuff in the news.
- 43:29What's going on now?
- 43:31I'm not saying I inspire all this Corvette stuff, but.
- 43:35GM kind of does it for me only.
- 43:37So the Chevy Corvette is celebrating 70 years and how are they doing that with an
- 43:42anniversary package, which I haven't read this article yet, but I'm guessing it's
- 43:46just a, a bunch of badges and colors and bullshit like they did for the 50th year.
- 43:50Oh, so let's see.
- 43:51Including as unique badging, special colors, and lots of red trim.
- 43:54Yeah.
- 43:55So it's a, it's an appearance package.
- 43:57GM is all about the appearance package.
- 43:59They did the same thing with the Camaro for the Camaro's 25th anniversary.
- 44:03The Corvette 50th anniversary was a special maroon color.
- 44:07I think with the magnesium wheels and whatever bullshit, I just said it.
- 44:11It's bullshit.
- 44:12It's 52, 000 markup at the for a base.
- 44:18Stingray.
- 44:19If you can get one.
- 44:19Now, I will say I like it.
- 44:22I think it looks good.
- 44:23Those wheels are really nice.
- 44:24And the little red trim, especially because it's coming in black and
- 44:28white, I think it kind of reminds me.
- 44:29In a weird way of like the GTI trim package, right?
- 44:33Where it's like the, just that little thin red line makes all the difference.
- 44:36And it just, it looks, it actually looks pretty cool.
- 44:39That's a lot.
- 44:40Cause I'm not, I'm not the biggest fan yet of the C8, especially
- 44:43the back, those profile shots, I think it looks pretty slick.
- 44:47Good on them.
- 44:47No, no, I mean, they definitely do a good job with them.
- 44:50I don't see anything about the price for this package when it comes
- 44:53out, but I can tell you that it's not going to be worth the price.
- 44:57It's a good looking car, but it's not going to be worth the price.
- 45:01One last sad bit of Chevrolet news, which we kind of tying it in all
- 45:06together with our first story.
- 45:08That's right.
- 45:09We are.
- 45:09We mentioned how surprising for that Chevy spark to be offered in a manual,
- 45:15but folks, you better jump on it after August of 2022, there will no longer be.
- 45:21Chevy Sparks available off the line.
- 45:23They are being discontinued.
- 45:25Collector car alerts.
- 45:27Funnily enough, the picture in the article even shows the manual version.
- 45:32If there was an automotive investment opportunity.
- 45:36This is it.
- 45:37I gotta ask.
- 45:41Would you drive one?
- 45:42Like as a rental?
- 45:45No, not at all.
- 45:46Why?
- 45:46Why would I be buying this?
- 45:47I would totally get the Corolla hatchback.
- 45:49I agree.
- 45:50I saw one of those driving around this month too.
- 45:53They're pretty cool looking.
- 45:54It was in a weird blue color, like this, like Robin's egg electric color.
- 45:59It was striking.
- 46:00I was like, man, that's the new Corolla, like sport hatchback.
- 46:03You can get the midnight murder packages on it too.
- 46:05Yeah.
- 46:06I was just going to say no, because I do not fit.
- 46:08I would drive a spark under one condition.
- 46:11If it was a fully prepped B spec race car, I would drive a Chevy spark thousand
- 46:16percent, because it would be a lot of fun.
- 46:19This wouldn't even be B spec.
- 46:21This would be D spec.
- 46:23He's using the Forza class.
- 46:25You buy one, the base model is F spec.
- 46:30And then you, you drop 150 grand into it to get it up to D.
- 46:34I didn't say I was building the race car.
- 46:36I said I would drive it and this over stuff like the Honda fit.
- 46:40I do love.
- 46:41Okay.
- 46:41So all jokes aside, you can pick up a brand new one of these cars for 15 grand.
- 46:48Yep.
- 46:49Yes.
- 46:50Okay.
- 46:50So I, yes, I would buy this if I was in the market for a new car and I was not six
- 46:55foot four, then I would totally consider one of these for just a putting around
- 46:59town, normal commuter car at 15 grand.
- 47:02When the average base.
- 47:04You know, average cost of a car right now is close to 50.
- 47:07Let's take that back.
- 47:08That Maverick is something like in the 20s.
- 47:11So would you rather have the Maverick or the Spark at that point?
- 47:15Well, the Corolla Hatchback's 20.
- 47:16Yeah, I think I'd still go with that.
- 47:18It's as close as I can get to a Yaris, right?
- 47:20Without.
- 47:20So we basically just explained why the Spark is going away
- 47:24because of the Corolla Hatchback.
- 47:26Wasn't there a Spark Turbo?
- 47:28Wasn't there like some Goofy add on thing for the factory, like special
- 47:32version or something like that.
- 47:33I, yeah, I think it came with the tornado that you used to see on infomercials
- 47:37that would help the fuel economy.
- 47:40You hit a slap chop on the dashboard and it spins up the turbo.
- 47:46It came with a tube that came from the engine compartment in New York,
- 47:49in the cockpit and you blew into it.
- 47:52And it forced induction into the motor.
- 47:55That's awesome.
- 47:57Oh man, lean as me and keep blowing that air in there.
- 48:00Is GM or Chevy going to release it with a special appearance package?
- 48:06They should, they should sunset it with some special trim packages.
- 48:09Yeah, it's black and white with little red lines.
- 48:12It's the what, what year anniversary does anybody even care they could
- 48:16call it 10 years, 10 years, 10 years, decade, the 10 year anniversary
- 48:21of the spark, the car existed.
- 48:24Let's take what he was leaving.
- 48:25Let's take this back.
- 48:26Let's take this back just one more time by a facade or spark.
- 48:31I mean, the sparks got more style.
- 48:34So I would totally buy a Corolla hatchback.
- 48:40That's awesome.
- 48:42No, the answer is Toyota GRRs.
- 48:46It always will be.
- 48:47That's for sure.
- 48:48Yes.
- 48:48So this has actually been a great month for news.
- 48:51We've had Corvette stuff come up.
- 48:52We're talking about manual transmissions.
- 48:54People are breaking records.
- 48:55Appearance packages, all this fun stuff.
- 48:58We don't have any Stellantis news to really talk about, but you
- 49:00know what we do have instead?
- 49:02We've got JDM news.
- 49:04This is awesome.
- 49:05So let's, let's dive into this.
- 49:07And the one that got me right off the beginning of the month,
- 49:10Toyota, the gazoo racing team has unveiled their GT three concept car.
- 49:18And just like the title of the article says it left me with questions.
- 49:23It Batmobile.
- 49:25My first question was, is this a Toyota powered Mercedes?
- 49:28Cause it looks like the SLS, right?
- 49:30I was like, what is this?
- 49:34Is this like, and because of that, just to save them money.
- 49:39And because of that, I like it
- 49:43looking like that.
- 49:44Mercedes is not a bad thing.
- 49:45No, it's good looking.
- 49:46I'm really shocked that something like this would come out of the
- 49:50Toyota design studio and I'm just like, wow, this is cool.
- 49:53Who knows to Brad's point, maybe this is some cooperation like they did with
- 49:57on the Zupra right between hopefully it isn't a BMW and they're not going back
- 50:01to that well yet again, he's right on point when he says that because all of
- 50:06their sports cars, whether it's the 86.
- 50:09Or it's the Supra or whatever it's in combination with somebody else, right?
- 50:13It's a cooperative effort.
- 50:14So I'm really curious to see where this comes from.
- 50:17Doesn't look or read like it's a Lexus with different sheet metal, like they've
- 50:21tried to do in the past, like the RCF and things like that, which we'll
- 50:25talk about more when we cover Rolex.
- 50:26And this is cool.
- 50:27I'm curious to see where this goes.
- 50:29I think it's just going to go as a race car in the GP3
- 50:32class, much like that Mustang.
- 50:34I would love to see something like this eventually end up into production.
- 50:38I don't see that ever happening, but it may have to, if this is going to be a
- 50:41real race car, but or it ends up in Gran Turismo before it ends up on the street.
- 50:45You know what I mean?
- 50:46That kind of thing.
- 50:47Kind of like the Mazda Ferrari, which was super cool looking, same kind
- 50:50of thing, like just blows you away.
- 50:52Even if you look at it today, you know, 10 years later, you're
- 50:54like, Oh, the Ferrari is awesome.
- 50:56Just never came to fruition.
- 50:57It never happened.
- 50:58So I want to spend a little bit of time talking about the next car on our list.
- 51:02And it's, it's a car that's come up before and Tanya talked about
- 51:05it when we talked about new EVs and concepts, you know, before we
- 51:08devoted more time to the Japanese market, it was the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
- 51:14And it's now being titled as one of the best affordable electric cars yet.
- 51:19I have to take a pause here because I'm going to say something I
- 51:22didn't think I was going to say.
- 51:24I like this.
- 51:25It looks good.
- 51:26I like it a lot.
- 51:28And the more I read about it, the more I like it.
- 51:30It would be a hard, hard decision to make between this and the Mach E
- 51:35because I'd like the Mach E as well, like the way it looks, especially
- 51:38in certain colors and things like that, again, buying with my eyes.
- 51:40But I started to dive into the numbers a little bit because I will be
- 51:44honest, you know, I'm not a dinosaur.
- 51:47I do love my petrol.
- 51:48I wanted to do a little bit of homework because if this is
- 51:51one of quote unquote, the best.
- 51:53What's so good about it.
- 51:54So I wanted to dive into the numbers.
- 51:56I wanted to do some comparisons between the driving I've been doing this month
- 52:00with, you know, an older petrol car against something like this ionic five.
- 52:04And you can read all about the ionic five in our show notes and figure out
- 52:08how wonderful it is, but I want to get.
- 52:10to a deeper conversation here.
- 52:11And so one of the things that I think has eluded us for a while when we
- 52:14talk about range anxiety and things like that is that there is no simple
- 52:19way to convert and compare a gallon of gas to unicorn farts, right?
- 52:27And so I actually found there were some Equations that were put out by
- 52:31Stanford about like EMPG and like how it converts all this kind of thing.
- 52:35So I kind of boiled it back and I got down to a single, very important number.
- 52:40One gallon of gasoline has a hundred percent of the energy of 33.
- 52:457 kilowatt hours.
- 52:47And I went, whoa, wait a minute.
- 52:48Okay.
- 52:49That's something tangible.
- 52:50I can work with this.
- 52:52So starting to break it down a little bit further, not trying
- 52:54to go into a whole math lesson.
- 52:55So I'll kind of tell you what I discovered here, why this is, this
- 52:58is important to the larger discussion and the future of EVs and how we
- 53:02grasp this as car enthusiasts, right?
- 53:05So 33.7 to one is the ratio.
- 53:08The ionic five has a 77.4 kilowatt hour battery, so you
- 53:12kind of look at that with 77.
- 53:13That's a low number.
- 53:14A hundred is good.
- 53:15Triple digits like we think like horsepower, right?
- 53:18Bigger numbers are better, but in reality, 77.4 kilowatt hours is roughly
- 53:23equivalent to 2.3 gallons of fuel.
- 53:27So it has a 303 mile range.
- 53:30People start flipping out about that number.
- 53:32A lot of gas cars have about 300 miles of range.
- 53:35So they're trying to give you this equivalency.
- 53:37That's 2.
- 53:383 gallons into 303 miles is an average of 132 miles per gallon.
- 53:44There is no gas motor or diesel motor on the planet right now
- 53:47that can achieve those numbers.
- 53:48I'm sorry.
- 53:49I finally have come to this realization.
- 53:51Okay, fine.
- 53:53Here's the downside.
- 53:54And it dawned on me in a conversation that I had with one of our previous
- 53:57guests, Crutch, who's been on the show a bunch of times, he has a Volkswagen ID4.
- 54:01He mentioned that his ID4 has the equivalent horsepower to about
- 54:06225 gas horsepower and I said, okay, wait, hold on a second.
- 54:10I took that back to the Hyundai again, and I said, okay.
- 54:12The Hyundai's single motor model manages 225 horsepower, just like the
- 54:17ID4, and 258 pound feet of torque.
- 54:20Roughly the same as a 2 liter Volkswagen TDI.
- 54:24Now, I know what that feels like, I know what that drives like, so whatever.
- 54:27The IONIQ weighs almost 4, 000 pounds.
- 54:30So that got me thinking, like a racer, power to weight ratio.
- 54:33So the power, so power, weight ratio of the ionic is 92.
- 54:3896 because it gets all converted to Watts per kilogram.
- 54:40Right.
- 54:41And all this kind of thing.
- 54:41I wanted to know without going to drive one of these, what does it drive?
- 54:46Like, what's it going to feel like?
- 54:48Because it's a heavy car at the end of the day with, let's think about
- 54:51it as a small motor, not really about the battery or the range.
- 54:55So when I started to kind of back calculate and figure out
- 54:58what cars that were equivalent to this, I couldn't find something
- 55:01that was like right on the money.
- 55:03I could find things that were close.
- 55:05And in my mind, then I could wrap my head around the whole idea because
- 55:08I've driven these vehicles before.
- 55:10So let me put it in perspective for the listeners.
- 55:12A Pentastar 3.
- 55:136 liter Jeep Grand Cherokee is roughly faster than this Hyundai.
- 55:20Also in that same category, The 2.
- 55:230 turbo Audi Quattro Q5.
- 55:26So if you've ever driven one of those, you know, kind of CUV SUV, then you have
- 55:30an idea of what this is roughly going to feel like, obviously power delivery
- 55:34is different because the electric power plant, all this kind of stuff.
- 55:36Cool.
- 55:36So we kind of put that all in perspective.
- 55:38It's just like any other midsize SUV V6 or high strung turbo four cylinder.
- 55:44So then it got me thinking, well, how much would it cost to operate?
- 55:48In general, so to fill it from 0 is 11 bucks because the average in the U.
- 55:54S.
- 55:55Is 14.
- 55:5519 cents per kilowatt hour, right?
- 55:58So I just took the number and just multiplied it out.
- 56:00It's 11 bucks to fill from 0 and the driving that I've been
- 56:03doing this month, rough mileage and kind of figured it all out.
- 56:06It would basically cost me.
- 56:0818 a week to operate the vehicle running the mileage that I ran just basically
- 56:14charging the car every time I got home and I ended up spending close to what
- 56:19the current price of gas right now.
- 56:21I was up in the neighborhood of 100 in fuel.
- 56:23So the cost savings overall better.
- 56:26The upfront cost of the vehicle.
- 56:28Obviously there's that.
- 56:29There's a lot of things to weigh in here, but if you're considering an EV or you're
- 56:33digging your heels in about how petrol's better, I kind of encourage you to sit
- 56:38back and do the math and I'll, and I'll share my math in the, in the follow on
- 56:41article if you want to take a look at it.
- 56:42Just kind of how roughly I got.
- 56:43You can tell me I'm wrong too.
- 56:45I'm totally okay with it.
- 56:46I am not a scientist or a mathematician, just an average Joe.
- 56:49Like you try to figure out how this makes sense and what the future does look like.
- 56:53Okay.
- 56:54Thanks for joining my TED talk.
- 56:57My only thoughts on all that is yes, you save savings came to 82 a
- 57:02week in your test case, 82 a week.
- 57:05So that's what, 240 a month.
- 57:08How much is a car payment going to be on a 40, 000 car?
- 57:11Yeah, that's, that's the part I didn't want to look at as opposed
- 57:13to a vehicle you already own.
- 57:15Correct.
- 57:15Well, that's the thing with any car purchase though, right?
- 57:18Like if you already have a car, it really makes no sense to ever Change your car.
- 57:24You can never recoup it, right?
- 57:25So unless you're in the market, you're in the market for a new car.
- 57:28If you are in the market for a new car, go electric.
- 57:31But if you really want a WRX station wagon, move to Australia.
- 57:36That's right.
- 57:37Because we're not going to get one.
- 57:39Sorry, folks.
- 57:39That's okay.
- 57:40This thing's ugly.
- 57:43I was just thinking it looks, it looks just like the Buick.
- 57:46That's what I, yes.
- 57:48Although I think the Buick looks better.
- 57:51So Subaru is selling a Buick wagon in Australia with a CVT transmission.
- 57:56This thing is a waste of time.
- 57:58Why are we talking about it?
- 57:59I don't know, but you know what else is a waste of time?
- 58:02How about spending 111, 000 and bring a trailer for a 2000 Acura Integra?
- 58:09I'm going to defend this a little bit.
- 58:12Oh, please do.
- 58:13No, I'm not defending 112, 000, but this Integra, the engineering that went into
- 58:21this car when Honda created it is very similar to the amount of engineering and
- 58:26over engineering that Toyota put into the Mark 4 Supra, as far as over building
- 58:32the motor and everything like that.
- 58:35This.
- 58:35Particular Integra type R model is actually a very special car.
- 58:40Still only had like 200 some odd horsepower or whatever it was,
- 58:43but Honda overbuilt, you know, the car and use special materials and
- 58:49engineering when they created the car.
- 58:51So I, I say they are collector's items and they are worth something.
- 58:55000, but I'm also not in the market.
- 58:58I don't know what to say because I am a fan of front wheel drive cars.
- 59:03But I could never see spending this kind of money on the
- 59:06equivalent of basically a shit box.
- 59:09I mean, as good as it is or was or whatever, it's your point.
- 59:14It's still a 200 horsepower front wheel drive car that any other car in
- 59:18the year 2000 obliterated this thing.
- 59:21I can name 12 of them right now to include the E46 M3 and any
- 59:25911 and just about anything.
- 59:28Is better than this and you could buy one of those used right now for less
- 59:33money or the same, but especially the BMWs, you 46 and threes, you know,
- 59:37they're starting to gain some traction on the used car market, but you can
- 59:40still buy a reasonably priced BMW from the 2000s and have a way better car.
- 59:46Don't know if it's necessarily a way better car, maybe
- 59:48a way better driving car.
- 59:51Hold on a second.
- 59:52Can't you buy a brand new Corvette for like 60 grand?
- 59:55Yes.
- 59:56No.
- 59:57So you could almost, you could buy two almost.
- 59:59Dealer markup.
- 1:00:00Dealer markup.
- 1:00:01Oh, you're right.
- 1:00:02You're right.
- 1:00:0260, 000 dealer market.
- 1:00:05Right.
- 1:00:05So you could buy one Corvette for the price of this.
- 1:00:08Integra.
- 1:00:09Yeah.
- 1:00:10I mean, someone's buying this as a collector piece at 6, 600 miles on it.
- 1:00:14That's the only reason it's clean.
- 1:00:17Otherwise this thing is worth move the decimal point a couple of places over.
- 1:00:20Yeah.
- 1:00:21Yeah.
- 1:00:2230, 35 grand when they were, which was actually a lot of money in 2000,
- 1:00:28I wouldn't have paid that then.
- 1:00:29I mean, it, I don't know.
- 1:00:30I I'm wrong.
- 1:00:31I know.
- 1:00:32I know I'm wrong, but I don't know, but you know, speaking of, you know, of wrong.
- 1:00:37Toyota builds autonomous self driving Supra.
- 1:00:40Why?
- 1:00:41They built it to test their autonomous driving capability, which is pretty
- 1:00:45cool actually when you consider what they've done, is they are autonomously
- 1:00:49drifting a car around a course.
- 1:00:52So it does know where the barriers are.
- 1:00:54But it doesn't know how to navigate the barrier.
- 1:00:56So it navigates them drifting.
- 1:00:59So it's still able to negotiate the changing speeds and the
- 1:01:02changing traction by itself.
- 1:01:04So in terms of their technology capability, that's pretty cool.
- 1:01:08How many pedestrians did they avoid?
- 1:01:10Well, they didn't hit the barriers.
- 1:01:11But I love that.
- 1:01:18We're excited about this.
- 1:01:19But isn't this the same thing Audi did like five years ago with the TT
- 1:01:24where they made it run on track at full speed with nobody driving it?
- 1:01:28But driving under control was different than driving.
- 1:01:31Yeah.
- 1:01:32I mean, they just, they just did a thing at the consumer electronics show too,
- 1:01:36where college kids or whoever they were, they took the indie cars basically, and
- 1:01:40they made himself driving around the oval or whatever that they had set up.
- 1:01:44In Nevada.
- 1:01:45So it's like, okay, but they had a fixed course.
- 1:01:48They weren't trying to drift.
- 1:01:50They weren't trying to be on the edge of traction and control.
- 1:01:53Right.
- 1:01:54I would rather be on a racetrack with this than Andrew Bank and four is a seven
- 1:01:58any day, just going to I mean, they're not saying this isn't about like, Oh,
- 1:02:04the new super is going to be autonomous and you'll be able to like drift.
- 1:02:06No, that's not the point.
- 1:02:07It's just, yes, they use the supra to do this.
- 1:02:10It's a testing apparatus for them to test autonomous driving and
- 1:02:14not just beta test it with people driving through San Francisco.
- 1:02:17Have they done this with a Camry?
- 1:02:18We wouldn't be talking about it.
- 1:02:20I mean, I'd still like to see a Camry drift.
- 1:02:22I think that would be pretty exciting.
- 1:02:24I mean, if you read through the article, apparently someone's
- 1:02:27already done this with a DeLorean.
- 1:02:29I did see that.
- 1:02:31I mean, that's pretty, that's pretty cool.
- 1:02:33Come on.
- 1:02:34The fact that a number, because you know why it's cool?
- 1:02:37The fact that it was capable of drifting.
- 1:02:39There you go.
- 1:02:39Because a DeLorean weighs like 9, 000 pounds and makes
- 1:02:42like a hundred horsepower.
- 1:02:43Those things are like terribly underpowered.
- 1:02:45I know that's an exaggeration, but if you look at the power to weight numbers,
- 1:02:49not to go back into that math lesson around the DeLorean, it is terrible.
- 1:02:52Like, it was not a joke in that movie.
- 1:02:55It struggles to get to 88 miles an hour.
- 1:02:58The top speed on a DeLorean is like 106.
- 1:03:01And I think it has to be going downhill with a semi truck pushing
- 1:03:04it because it just, it's so pathetic.
- 1:03:06Granted.
- 1:03:07I love those cars.
- 1:03:08I think they're fantastic.
- 1:03:08I'm not, I'm not hating on them.
- 1:03:10I am still waiting for my EV version to come out, but you know, it's all good.
- 1:03:14But speaking of flux capacitors.
- 1:03:16Apparently there's a recall on Hyundai's and Kia's anything from 2016 to 2018,
- 1:03:22the Santa Fe's, the face sports, the Tucson's, the Kia's in the same year
- 1:03:27range, even a little bit older, 24 to 2016, their sportages are all being
- 1:03:32recalled because apparently there's a defect in the, uh, anti lock brake
- 1:03:36system and something short circuits.
- 1:03:40And essentially they can turn into flaming balls of fire.
- 1:03:45And so it's being and so it's being suggested strongly recommended that you
- 1:03:50not park your vehicle inside a garage or anywhere that could light your
- 1:03:54house on fire, as that is a potential.
- 1:03:57However, it is still perfectly safe to drive these down the road.
- 1:04:01This is becoming more common.
- 1:04:03Have you guys realized almost every month, even over the last course of
- 1:04:08Season 2, we've talked about Chevys that could spontaneously combust.
- 1:04:12There were Toyotas, there was the Chryslers, the Hyundais.
- 1:04:15It's all a plot.
- 1:04:16It's all a plot.
- 1:04:17It's all a plot about the dangers of gasoline cars.
- 1:04:20All they do is spontaneously explode all the time.
- 1:04:24In the combustion chambers.
- 1:04:25You're right.
- 1:04:26They spontaneously, yeah, nevermind.
- 1:04:29You know, I mentioned earlier about spotting cars in the wild, the Ford
- 1:04:33Taurus X and the Maverick were not the only things I saw on the road.
- 1:04:37I did see some interesting JDM cars.
- 1:04:39As I mentioned, I did see the Corolla sport hatchback.
- 1:04:42I thought it was really cool.
- 1:04:44Got to see that several times.
- 1:04:45That guy was easy to spot in traffic every day.
- 1:04:47And then.
- 1:04:48I actually noticed something out of the corner of my eye and I sped up to take
- 1:04:52a look at it because I'd never seen one before and I thought it was another
- 1:04:55Toyota Corolla hatchback, but actually it was the Hyundai Elantra Sport.
- 1:05:01And if you haven't seen this car, it's like Better than the
- 1:05:06Veloster, not maybe performance wise, but it's more of like a GTI.
- 1:05:10I thought it was a good looking car.
- 1:05:11I was like, man, Hyundai's really putting out some neat stuff.
- 1:05:14We're not hearing about it.
- 1:05:16Or maybe we're just not in that, that circle, you know,
- 1:05:19of Korean cars and whatnot.
- 1:05:20But I kept looking, I kept looking, I was like, man, that's the coolest,
- 1:05:24GTI that Hyundai's built yet.
- 1:05:26So anyway, yeah, the Hyundai Elantra GT sport, there's an inline version as well.
- 1:05:31Like, like an, in a GT, that'd be kind of cool.
- 1:05:35That would be kind of cool.
- 1:05:36And the Veloster N is a neat car.
- 1:05:38I mean, uh, the looks you got to get used to, but performance
- 1:05:41wise, I've said it before.
- 1:05:42It's a really good performing car.
- 1:05:44It's surprisingly good.
- 1:05:45I think it would be a hard toss up for me between that and the Elantra.
- 1:05:48And the Civic Turbo, the Civic Turbo is a much bigger car, but the Veloster N
- 1:05:53is actually a really capable vehicle.
- 1:05:54But you know what else I did see on the road?
- 1:05:56I saw the newest Prius.
- 1:05:58Very angular.
- 1:06:00I don't understand it because the previous Priuses, they weren't beauty
- 1:06:05queens by any stretch of the imagination.
- 1:06:07But what I don't get is the back, like they took the previous Prius and it's
- 1:06:11like they just grabbed it and squeezed it and yanked it and stretched it.
- 1:06:16And it's just like, you know, when you watch a kid with a marshmallow and it
- 1:06:19begs the question, why do they have to continue making it look so strange?
- 1:06:25Why can't the Prius just be?
- 1:06:28The Corolla sedan with an EV power plant in it, like with maybe some, I don't
- 1:06:33know, different wheels or something.
- 1:06:35Like, why does it have to look so weird?
- 1:06:37It stands out.
- 1:06:38Maybe that's the point is people get people to go.
- 1:06:40Ooh.
- 1:06:40Ah, now there was another what I'd like to call Asian car on the road
- 1:06:45that I saw that I don't understand.
- 1:06:47And I say it's Asian because it's made by Tata and Tata is an Indian company.
- 1:06:51And it was the Jaguar.
- 1:06:52I pace EV 400.
- 1:06:54I honestly felt like I could drive.
- 1:06:56underneath of it.
- 1:06:57It was the back end was so tall.
- 1:07:00The rear glass was so short and so angled in that sort of like,
- 1:07:05uh, what do they call it now?
- 1:07:06The Atlas or whatever sport back thing where I don't even
- 1:07:10know why I had rear glass.
- 1:07:11It was, it's bizarre.
- 1:07:13Glad somebody bought one good for Jaguar that does things out there.
- 1:07:17That back is like a nice bench.
- 1:07:19Yeah, you could definitely sit up there, but it's also flat like a wall.
- 1:07:23You can eat your lunch on the back of it.
- 1:07:25Real nicely.
- 1:07:25Oh yeah.
- 1:07:26Nice.
- 1:07:26Yeah.
- 1:07:26Yeah.
- 1:07:26The birds will perch up there and poop down the side of it.
- 1:07:29It'll be perfect.
- 1:07:30So that wraps up our JDM news.
- 1:07:33So now we need to move into Brad's favorite section, lost and found.
- 1:07:36So what do we got this month?
- 1:07:38I wanted to go ahead and go back to cars.
- 1:07:40com and see what the oldest.
- 1:07:43They have categorized brand new vehicle you can buy is right now on the market.
- 1:07:50And as of today, you can purchase a brand new, again, it's categorized
- 1:07:55as brand new, 1988 Cadillac DeVille base for a whopping 18, 000.
- 1:08:03What?
- 1:08:04Yeah.
- 1:08:05There's no picture.
- 1:08:06You know, we should send John to VC to this dealership because it's in his.
- 1:08:12Tome town.
- 1:08:13Oh, gray Chevrolet and Stroudsburg PA.
- 1:08:16Uh, another quote unquote, brand new car that they've listed is a 2005 Ford GT.
- 1:08:24If anybody remembers, that's when they brought back the GT the first
- 1:08:27time it's got the, uh, the 5.
- 1:08:304 liter motor from the Ford lightning, obviously souped up with a
- 1:08:33supercharger and all that good stuff, uh, with a bigger supercharger and
- 1:08:36all that 450 grand, it's a steel.
- 1:08:39And it's low mileage because it.
- 1:08:41Never ran.
- 1:08:42Oh yeah.
- 1:08:43This is Jeremy Clarkson's own.
- 1:08:44So it never ran.
- 1:08:45So no, it's got 13, 000 miles.
- 1:08:47So that's actually probably high mileage for one of these cars.
- 1:08:49It's like, uh, some guys used to say, you know, you never buy a
- 1:08:52Jag that doesn't have high mileage because you know, it didn't run.
- 1:08:55We've got, put it in the bank.
- 1:08:56I tried convincing Andrew to buy this car.
- 1:08:59He was not interested, sadly.
- 1:09:01I think he really should.
- 1:09:03He could use it.
- 1:09:04There is the cheapest Dodge Viper GTS on the internet right now.
- 1:09:09It's in Albuquerque, New Mexico for 16, 000.
- 1:09:12It's a 2002 Dodge Viper GTS, basically back end.
- 1:09:17It starts at the windshield and goes back, but there's no motor.
- 1:09:21There's no anything with this car.
- 1:09:23I mean, there's an exhaust.
- 1:09:25Yeah.
- 1:09:26Yeah.
- 1:09:26There's like a bumper or.
- 1:09:28Something this is like a, what, what were those model kits that the Tiesto
- 1:09:34model kits or whatever they were, it's going to need a windshield though.
- 1:09:37That's a 100%.
- 1:09:38I love that.
- 1:09:39You're looking at this and you say it definitely needs a windshield.
- 1:09:42I love that you focused well, I want to leave.
- 1:09:47I want to leave something to the audience's imagination because you
- 1:09:50definitely need to check this out in our show notes because, yeah, I definitely
- 1:09:55would not put this in the bank.
- 1:09:57That's for sure.
- 1:09:58I would save my pennies.
- 1:09:59I might almost buy that Chevy Spark instead of this Viper.
- 1:10:04But if any of our listeners are on Instagram, please DM to the bank and
- 1:10:08make sure you DM this ad and let him know that it is still for sale and he
- 1:10:12should buy this because he does not have enough Dodge Vipers as it is right now.
- 1:10:16Thousand percent.
- 1:10:17And if you want to learn more about that, check out this month's episode
- 1:10:20with Havoc Performance, all about Vipers and Andrew and his Vipers.
- 1:10:25Oh, yes.
- 1:10:26There is a geo Metro.
- 1:10:29Oh, our favorite car.
- 1:10:30Yeah.
- 1:10:30This is a fan favorite here at GTM.
- 1:10:34This one's kind of special because it takes two fan favorites.
- 1:10:37It takes the geo Metro and it takes the LS conversion and it puts them together.
- 1:10:43So yes, there is an LS swapped geo Metro.
- 1:10:47Sadly, it's not the convertible that would have been too perfect.
- 1:10:52I was going to say Jalopnik has the Volvo wagon.
- 1:10:55We've got the LS swap, geometric and readable.
- 1:10:58I want to know, is it still a geo with the Chevy badge or is it the Aveo?
- 1:11:02Is this that weird period?
- 1:11:03But none of that's important because it is a geo with the Chevy badge, but what is
- 1:11:07important is when I scrolled down to about the third picture and you see the view
- 1:11:12from the trunk, I, I just, I'm speechless.
- 1:11:15I don't even know how this works.
- 1:11:18Let me describe it for the folks that are going to be like, you know what?
- 1:11:20I'm not going to waste time looking at the article.
- 1:11:22Think of it this way.
- 1:11:23The motors in the trunk.
- 1:11:25And it's in their transverse and it's still an LS.
- 1:11:28I, I don't understand any of this.
- 1:11:31Yeah.
- 1:11:31I don't think they ever mounted an LS motor transverse in any vehicle.
- 1:11:37I'm trying to think what transmission this, I mean, I I'm spending way too much.
- 1:11:41Mental effort on this that is necessary.
- 1:11:44It does have an automatic transmission though.
- 1:11:46It comes with the 40 ADE from a Cadillac.
- 1:11:49So I don't know, I don't know how they made it.
- 1:11:51That maybe a custom bellhousing, Andrew bank, please buy this car
- 1:11:55to park it on top of your Viper.
- 1:11:58Oh, this is the best part.
- 1:11:59This car is listed for sale for a 7, 000 firm.
- 1:12:05Price.
- 1:12:05I know what I have.
- 1:12:06Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay.
- 1:12:08All things considered, I would almost say that this car is worth
- 1:12:11buying it for the motor itself.
- 1:12:14Except it's just a 5.
- 1:12:143 liter.
- 1:12:15It's not the, not the six liter.
- 1:12:17Okay, let's back it up for one second before we move on.
- 1:12:20I want to know the conversation or the bet.
- 1:12:24Or what that started this.
- 1:12:26Like, who literally said, I got an idea, pour LS and that geo up in the backyard.
- 1:12:30To waste the time, and the resources, and the effort, and
- 1:12:34all the custom fabrication.
- 1:12:36I mean, unless this guy was bored.
- 1:12:37I don't understand.
- 1:12:39Daniel, are you listening?
- 1:12:40I can build it myself.
- 1:12:42I can build it better.
- 1:12:43Daniel, you need a motor for that BMW you bought.
- 1:12:46With all that said, I think it's time we move on to random new EVs and concepts.
- 1:12:51And first up this month is an Alpha Wagon, but this is an Alpha.
- 1:12:56A L F a as an alpha remail.
- 1:12:59This is alpha as an a L P H a, a brand, none of us had ever heard of before.
- 1:13:05So continuing on this whole thing that's been going on for the last couple of years
- 1:13:10in boutique brands, here's yet another one to the list, the clickbait got me at the
- 1:13:15wagon part, and then when I opened it, I.
- 1:13:18I didn't read it and clicked the close tab as fast as I could.
- 1:13:23This thing is terrible.
- 1:13:24I think it's awesome.
- 1:13:26What?
- 1:13:26Looks wise.
- 1:13:27It looks like a wagon Scirocco.
- 1:13:29It looks like I took it and bent it over my knee.
- 1:13:32I mean, what is this thing?
- 1:13:33I love the fender flares.
- 1:13:35I love the back end.
- 1:13:37I love the profile of the whole thing.
- 1:13:39Sign me up.
- 1:13:40Oh, I love the off road version down below.
- 1:13:42The stubby tires.
- 1:13:44There's worse things than this.
- 1:13:45I think it could be cleaned up.
- 1:13:47A couple of lines could be cleaned up on it.
- 1:13:49The side profile reminds me of like something from decades ago
- 1:13:54of Volvo, maybe, I don't know.
- 1:13:56Something.
- 1:13:57For the corners, it does remind me of something old school,
- 1:14:00but it looks really cool.
- 1:14:01Yes.
- 1:14:02It looks like, yes, I see.
- 1:14:03It's curved the surfboard on the top.
- 1:14:05That's curved.
- 1:14:06It follows a curvature.
- 1:14:07You can tell it bent.
- 1:14:11It's just coupe.
- 1:14:13They need to pull the nose forward.
- 1:14:17So it doesn't triangulate back.
- 1:14:19That's what's drawing the line weird because that's not even a very
- 1:14:22steep hood compared to no, it's not.
- 1:14:24I mean, the back is reminiscent of some older Aston's in my opinion,
- 1:14:29from the side, from the straight.
- 1:14:31Straight on view of the back.
- 1:14:33It's just kind of blah.
- 1:14:34I mean, it has those four round lights, like an old Ferrari.
- 1:14:37It has inspiration from different vehicles, but I don't know that we needed
- 1:14:42to marry an Outback with the Ferrari station wagon and whatever that front
- 1:14:48end is off of, uh, you know, off of a Dasher, it's never going to get built.
- 1:14:52Let's be serious.
- 1:14:53Who the hell is Alpha that isn't Alpha or a male?
- 1:14:56Well, before we move on, I will say Alpha is taking reservations for this car.
- 1:15:01What dealer network?
- 1:15:02The same dealer network is tesla www.
- 1:15:05alpha.
- 1:15:05com probably.
- 1:15:06Well, if you're interested in, in other EVs that aren't cars, but trucks
- 1:15:12and other workhorses, if you will, there's a car and driver article that
- 1:15:15goes through a long list of other EVs that we didn't even know were coming.
- 1:15:20So there's a bunch of different.
- 1:15:22Buses or vans, things of that nature.
- 1:15:26Apparently, Amazon has a deal with Rivian delivery trucks.
- 1:15:30They're so cute.
- 1:15:31And they're very futuristic.
- 1:15:32They're very cute looking.
- 1:15:34There's even Honda has a work vehicle.
- 1:15:36That's it looks like they look like the things that run around the airports.
- 1:15:39I don't know what you call those, but the little guys, the guys drive them, pull in
- 1:15:43the luggage and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:15:44The interesting one on here too, is the John Deere autonomous tractor.
- 1:15:49That looks like a Pokemon.
- 1:15:50Like, I was like, what is this?
- 1:15:52Looks so weird.
- 1:15:53It's got like alien thing coming out the front.
- 1:15:56I don't know.
- 1:15:57It's bizarre.
- 1:15:59There's some off road snowmobiles, the Polaris.
- 1:16:02It's got an Eevee, which just sounds frightening.
- 1:16:04It looks like they're out in the Arctic.
- 1:16:06Hate to have that battery die.
- 1:16:08The Polaris, they didn't do a whole lot.
- 1:16:10They put an EV in an existing Polaris and it's like, all right, no,
- 1:16:14yeah, it looks like any other one.
- 1:16:17And then the, the last one is interesting is the freight liner tractor trailer.
- 1:16:21It looks like it's out of Tron.
- 1:16:23That thing is awesome.
- 1:16:24I know it's an appearance package, but I'm in love with that tractor
- 1:16:27trailer for the Tron livery.
- 1:16:29That's on it.
- 1:16:30I think it's cool.
- 1:16:31I will say I was delighted to see a brand returning to the list.
- 1:16:35We talked about them last month and that's our friends over it.
- 1:16:38Canoe.
- 1:16:39Yeah, they have it.
- 1:16:40MPDV, whatever that stands for.
- 1:16:43This is a vehicle that I built when I was five years old outta Legos.
- 1:16:48. It does one brick and four wheels.
- 1:16:51It does.
- 1:16:51It's a very, it's very utilitarian.
- 1:16:54I like delivery truck, I guess is what you would use it for.
- 1:16:57I mean, it could be a lifestyle vehicle, it could be a minivan or, or light duty.
- 1:17:01So it, yeah.
- 1:17:02MPDV is multi-purpose delivery vehicle.
- 1:17:05Give it some, some knobby tires, lift it a little bit.
- 1:17:08And there you go.
- 1:17:09Take it off road, hashtag, you know, van life, take a camping.
- 1:17:14Speaking of utilitarian vehicles.
- 1:17:16So we've talked about before Bollinger, another, you know, off
- 1:17:21brand that nobody's ever heard of.
- 1:17:23And they were coming out with the B1 and the B2.
- 1:17:26And basically it looks like really utilitarian Hummer.
- 1:17:30The pickup truck's not any better.
- 1:17:32Well, apparently they've pulled the plug on this.
- 1:17:34And they won't be bringing these to production as they said they would.
- 1:17:38Instead, I guess they're kind of shifting their focus to the
- 1:17:42platform that they develop.
- 1:17:43It's not clear who they might be partnering with, I guess, whatever
- 1:17:47this platform they've developed is at least good enough to have that keep
- 1:17:51going and partner with other people.
- 1:17:53So they're going to focus on that side of the business versus.
- 1:17:56You know, designing this horrifically ugly SUV and pickup truck.
- 1:18:00And this is what I used to always say that Tesla should have done is they should have
- 1:18:04designed and perfected an electric vehicle platform and then sold it to all the other
- 1:18:09manufacturers to put their own body on top of that's the same model that Mercedes did
- 1:18:15with the sprinter vans and why they sold them to everybody under the sun and why
- 1:18:18there's a freight liner and a Dodge that.
- 1:18:20That's the model.
- 1:18:22And I think that makes sense.
- 1:18:23We just talked about these vehicles last month, you know, hot to
- 1:18:26trot on the EV list of EVs to get, and now it's already dead.
- 1:18:31I became completely disenfranchised and I went straight to the comments looking
- 1:18:34for some levity in all of this, and I found that my favorite troll post thus
- 1:18:38far, which is don't feel bad about the loss of the B one and the B two.
- 1:18:42If you really want one, just check out your local Lego store.
- 1:18:45For 39.
- 1:18:4699 plus tax.
- 1:18:50I very much enjoyed that.
- 1:18:52So that made the article that much more worth it.
- 1:18:54But sadly, Bollinger B2 pickup or Cybertruck?
- 1:18:59I'm leaning towards this Lego truck.
- 1:19:03You know, I have to agree with you on that, but there's something else
- 1:19:06I would lean completely towards and I think that's the new Rivian that is a
- 1:19:11handsome and you know, me, I'm not a fan of pickup trucks question for you,
- 1:19:17which one are we going to see first, this that we already know is suspended or.
- 1:19:23The Cybertruck, which one has production first?
- 1:19:25Ooh, it's hard.
- 1:19:27That's hard to say.
- 1:19:29The Bollinger has regular windshield wipers.
- 1:19:31So, you know, it might come out first.
- 1:19:33It has three of them.
- 1:19:34It's got an extra one.
- 1:19:39That was their mistake.
- 1:19:40That's why they've had to pull the plug on this.
- 1:19:42One extra windshield wiper.
- 1:19:44We want to talk about the Rivian other than the way it looks.
- 1:19:47I think it's a handsome little pickup truck.
- 1:19:50I mean, I think it does a good, it looks like a pickup truck and
- 1:19:54that's what I kind of want to see with these electric pickup trucks.
- 1:19:57I want them to remind me that it's a pickup truck, not an N64 game,
- 1:20:02but then it changes the style enough with the front and the lights that it
- 1:20:07has that futuristic, EV vibe to it.
- 1:20:11I like it, but I like it in the same way.
- 1:20:14I like my Jeep in that it looks like a little hippopotamus and that's
- 1:20:19okay because it does right with this big, those big nostrils in the front.
- 1:20:24It looks like a hippo, but that's okay.
- 1:20:26It's proportioned.
- 1:20:27Well, what I think is deceiving about the pictures.
- 1:20:30is that this is probably the same size as the maverick.
- 1:20:33I could be wrong.
- 1:20:34I don't think it's a 1500.
- 1:20:36I think it's slightly smaller.
- 1:20:38And if GM is involved with Rivian, this might be like a Jimmy might be
- 1:20:44that smaller, the S10 or the resurgence of the S10 or something like that.
- 1:20:48I'm okay with all of that.
- 1:20:49But to your point, I like it as well.
- 1:20:51What bugs me though, Is this latest ad campaign on the Rivian site?
- 1:20:57Because it feels like we are following in the Broncos footsteps
- 1:21:01talking about the goat modes and all this stuff and the eight modes
- 1:21:05and the trains and this and that.
- 1:21:07And I'm like, let's just sell a truck.
- 1:21:08I didn't take it that way.
- 1:21:09I thought it was an interesting video because I think, okay, Bronco Ford,
- 1:21:13they're doing it for their goat mode, but I, Think to some extent, someone
- 1:21:18making electric pickup truck has to come out with a video like this because
- 1:21:20everyone who is a pickup truck enthusiast is gonna be like, what a piece of crap.
- 1:21:24You're not going to take that off the road with electric motor, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:21:27And they have to demonstrate.
- 1:21:28Right.
- 1:21:29And they're not doing anything really.
- 1:21:31Wild from a lay person's perspective, you know, Brad, you're can correct
- 1:21:36me because you're more off road.
- 1:21:37I think it's showcase.
- 1:21:39Well, that it's going to be competent in different types of terrain.
- 1:21:43And I think they need to do that.
- 1:21:44I think they need to show that to people.
- 1:21:46Yeah, it shows that it's as good off road as any other standard pickup truck.
- 1:21:53Major altercations or any one kind of impressive thing is when it does a little
- 1:21:57bit of rock crawling, just because of the, I guess the approach angles are that
- 1:22:01of, you know, very similar to a Bronco or a Jeep, at least on the front, the
- 1:22:04back end departure angle is not very good because the bumper hangs off so far.
- 1:22:09I agree with Tanya.
- 1:22:10It's to put the naysayers to rest before they can.
- 1:22:14I'm going to put it this way.
- 1:22:14When Tanya decides to go test for drive one, I will go with her and
- 1:22:18it will be a pleasant experience, but you know what, it's not going
- 1:22:22to hold a candle to the next car on our list that we want to talk about.
- 1:22:25That, Hey, that's a little mountain goat.
- 1:22:29It's big, bad granddaddy is this Land Rover defender that
- 1:22:33has been converted to an EV.
- 1:22:34And I know there's a lot of people that are against doing that.
- 1:22:37This is a classic, you know, kind of old school defender.
- 1:22:40This thing is bad ass.
- 1:22:42This is.
- 1:22:43The off roader of off roaders right here, right?
- 1:22:46You can still fix with a spoon and a dull knife.
- 1:22:49This is cool.
- 1:22:49You got to check this article out, guys.
- 1:22:51I mean, it just looks awesome.
- 1:22:53It is awesome.
- 1:22:54I mean, if you're a fan of Landy's, this is the way to go right here.
- 1:22:57I don't see any fault with this.
- 1:22:59You, you aren't totally wrong being able to fix it with a sharp spoon
- 1:23:04and a dull knife because you can fix the Tesla power plant at Home Depot
- 1:23:10with some copper wire and And, you know, a classic tub and some, some wood bits.
- 1:23:15Now this is a Tesla conversion.
- 1:23:17So you can pull up to any Tesla charging station and all that kind of thing.
- 1:23:20But this is really cool.
- 1:23:22You know, if you ask me, I would rather spend the kind of money that people
- 1:23:27are spending on converting old Aston's and stuff like that, you know, to
- 1:23:31Evie on something like this and the interior, this thing is beautiful.
- 1:23:36This is 300, 000.
- 1:23:38Again, for the money that is being spent.
- 1:23:41You could get a Ferrari SUV in two years and a Corvette, even with the
- 1:23:45mark of church, but it's not a Landy and this thing's pretty bad ass.
- 1:23:49You could buy 20 Chevy Sparks.
- 1:23:52All right.
- 1:23:53Well, we would be remiss.
- 1:23:55Dun dun dun.
- 1:23:57This is a great segue into we would be remiss, I would say.
- 1:24:00Yes.
- 1:24:01So speaking of Tesla Motors.
- 1:24:03And we alluded to this, I think, last month when we mentioned how suddenly
- 1:24:07you couldn't put place orders anymore on the Cybertruck and whatnot, but it has
- 1:24:11now been officially confirmed that there will be no production in 2022 of the
- 1:24:16Cybertruck, the Roadster, or the Semi.
- 1:24:19They are going to apparently be focusing all their attention on
- 1:24:23full self driving that's going to be quote, better than a human.
- 1:24:27Asterix and Elon's new rocket so he can go into space.
- 1:24:31Which is ironic when the news this week has been showing footage, I guess
- 1:24:36it was finally released of a Tesla crash from I think like a year ago
- 1:24:40where it got confused by the police blinking lights and it just sideswipe
- 1:24:45a cruiser that was parked on the side of the road, nearly taking out
- 1:24:48the two officers that were standing next to it on the side of the road.
- 1:24:51Mind you, a lot of damage, anybody out there that's looking for a cyber truck.
- 1:24:57I have for sale a day one reservation reached to me with the, your best offer.
- 1:25:02No 1, what I have 1, 1.
- 1:25:06No, it has to be at least a hundred of those.
- 1:25:09So on your, uh, pre order that you placed on your cyber truck, let's
- 1:25:13pretend one day you actually get it.
- 1:25:15Are you going to try and see if you can get a little add on feature to it?
- 1:25:20A little bit of, uh, A little bit of mood setting in your Cybertruck
- 1:25:24as you're cruising down the road.
- 1:25:25Yeah.
- 1:25:25Yeah.
- 1:25:26Brad, are you gonna, are you gonna play with your butthole?
- 1:25:28I think you mean tickle and no.
- 1:25:31So you would not be interested in, in the turn on butthole.
- 1:25:35I mean, sorry, turn on Tesla mic feature.
- 1:25:38That, uh, can be offered with your Tesla and turn your car into a karaoke machine.
- 1:25:45Have you all heard my voice?
- 1:25:47I do not have a voice for singing or karaoke.
- 1:25:50So no, I know you've got that deep baritone.
- 1:25:54Yes, yes, but not quite.
- 1:25:56He could have a barbershop quartet in his Tesla.
- 1:25:58So that's, that's perfectly perfect.
- 1:25:59Yes.
- 1:26:00He'd be back there.
- 1:26:00Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 1:26:02I mean, apparently like we're just.
- 1:26:05Play to the party here.
- 1:26:06It's not offered in the U S this is something offered in China.
- 1:26:10Software update feature or something, something, something like that.
- 1:26:12And you can order special microphone with Tesla written on it.
- 1:26:16And then, yeah, apparently you can karaoke in your car.
- 1:26:19I have nothing against karaoke.
- 1:26:21It's very fun.
- 1:26:22I.
- 1:26:23Don't know why you would be driving down the road and karaoke because that
- 1:26:27implies a lot of times you're reading the lyrics to songs that you're less
- 1:26:31familiar with because you can karaoke already in your car without a microphone.
- 1:26:35This is needed because Tesla owners.
- 1:26:40Realize that the last thing they want to actually do is drive a Tesla.
- 1:26:44So they try to do everything else under the sun.
- 1:26:47So they don't have Tesla's also celebrating an anniversary, right?
- 1:26:51Yes, it is.
- 1:26:51And not being under the sun, but sort of around the sun.
- 1:26:57Around hundreds of millions of miles away, I guess, but closer, the roadster
- 1:27:02was launched this week, four years ago, so the roadster and spaceman are
- 1:27:07still out there orbiting waiting for service at their waiting to be crash
- 1:27:12landed back, I guess, eventually, I don't know, there's nothing useful.
- 1:27:17No useful information to gain by like, I think positioning
- 1:27:21any telescopes or anything, like check what this thing is doing.
- 1:27:26So nobody has so, but they are speculating that it's probably been like wrecked a few
- 1:27:31times in the sense that like asteroids or other meteors or objects have like hit it.
- 1:27:38I don't want to see that.
- 1:27:39I know.
- 1:27:40So now I'm like, can we please turn a telescope in his direction or something?
- 1:27:45Can we see if there's like door panels missing or the spaceman is
- 1:27:49what if the spaceman has like no head?
- 1:27:51He's just, oh my gosh.
- 1:27:54So I can't tell you what it looks like right now, but I can tell you where it is.
- 1:28:00And it is 234, 675, 760 miles from earth.
- 1:28:08Moving away from earth at a speed of 2, 455 miles an hour.
- 1:28:12And it is 197, 769, 713 miles from Mars.
- 1:28:18Technically, I guess it has a record of most miles traveled.
- 1:28:23Cause it's traveled like 2 billion miles.
- 1:28:26I'm sorry, Porsche, but it also has the elevation, the longest elevation change.
- 1:28:30So you lose again to Tesla.
- 1:28:33Oh, but I will say this car is no longer.
- 1:28:37Within it's 36, 000 mile factory warranty.
- 1:28:41So if you have to replace the battery, you might as well just blow it up.
- 1:28:45Did they shoot it into space with the hazard lights on?
- 1:28:47Cause that would have been so awesome.
- 1:28:49Just like blinking away.
- 1:28:51No, but the radio was playing, you know, David Bowie.
- 1:28:54So pretty sure that cut out.
- 1:28:56Couple of years ago, I was going to say cut out when it left the atmosphere.
- 1:29:01Exactly.
- 1:29:02Well, my expectations have been thoroughly lowered.
- 1:29:05What else is in the news?
- 1:29:06I do have one expectation that I want to explain.
- 1:29:11It's a more of a PSA about the Jeep grand Cherokee.
- 1:29:15I think last month I panned the way that new Jeep Grand Cherokees look saying that
- 1:29:19they were too long and they look stupid and I didn't like them or whatever.
- 1:29:23I will say that I have seen more of them on the road and the more that I
- 1:29:27see the new Grand Cherokee granted, I'm not talking about the Wagoneer.
- 1:29:30I think I've only seen one Wagoneer on the road.
- 1:29:32But I have seen several of the grand Cherokees and I'm
- 1:29:36coming around on their design.
- 1:29:37I'm starting to like them more.
- 1:29:39I've seen them in different trim packages, a little bit bigger
- 1:29:42wheels, some knobbier tires.
- 1:29:43They definitely look, I'm starting to come around on design.
- 1:29:46So yeah, you're, you're right.
- 1:29:48I mean, After a while of seeing so many Geico caveman commercials,
- 1:29:52decided that he was charming and cute.
- 1:29:54You know, it's the same thing with the Grand Cherokee.
- 1:29:58It's got this weird, it's the grill because it bends back in on itself.
- 1:30:04It's, I don't know, it's odd.
- 1:30:05Like, it hasn't grown on me yet, but then again, I've seen
- 1:30:08a bunch of them in the wild.
- 1:30:09I mentioned it last month when we talked about it.
- 1:30:12I almost wish that the Cherokee nation had come through and said,
- 1:30:17do not call this Cherokee because I don't feel it should wear the badge.
- 1:30:21Right.
- 1:30:21It feels like it's a step away, especially with the three rows.
- 1:30:26It should just be the Wagoneer.
- 1:30:27Like, I don't know.
- 1:30:29It's my personal opinion, but they should just bring back the commander name.
- 1:30:32That seems to be what a lot of people are doing when they move from Native American.
- 1:30:37Yeah, exactly.
- 1:30:38Now, the other thing I did see.
- 1:30:40To your point about the Grand Cherokee, I also happen to see the new Cherokee on
- 1:30:44the road, kind of the smaller version.
- 1:30:47They've made it bigger.
- 1:30:48It's more like the old Grand Cherokee, not nearly as big.
- 1:30:52It's not bad.
- 1:30:53It's proportioned well.
- 1:30:54They got rid of the, you know, the three headlights and all this
- 1:30:56crazy stuff that was going on.
- 1:30:58They continue to refine it.
- 1:30:59They're playing a little badge engineering, I feel like,
- 1:31:01but we'll see what happens.
- 1:31:02Who knows, right?
- 1:31:03You ever get tired of driving in traffic, just wish you could, you know, have
- 1:31:08a helicopter, just zoom to where you need to be, avoid all the congestion?
- 1:31:14Well, look out, another disruptor on the way, thinking EVs are the future.
- 1:31:19Well, what about The air car.
- 1:31:21No.
- 1:31:23What about a car that transforms into a small aircraft?
- 1:31:28So you can take off, take flight, get to your destination, land back
- 1:31:32down, convert back into a car, and drive that final distance.
- 1:31:36How many times is this idea Going to come up in the history of the automotive
- 1:31:42world and never get off the ground, like what they've been trying to since the
- 1:31:47sixties, it's been successful because it has passed the Slovak transport
- 1:31:52authorities flight testing in Slovakia.
- 1:31:57Oh, that testing is equivalent, just for anybody who's in doubt,
- 1:32:01equivalent, sorry, compatible with.
- 1:32:04The European Aviation Safety Agency standards.
- 1:32:06So we're on to something here.
- 1:32:08How big is the no fly zone in Slovakia?
- 1:32:10Also, this thing is powered by a BW engine.
- 1:32:13Does that change your mind?
- 1:32:14Yeah.
- 1:32:14Cause then it will fall out of the sky halfway through your flight.
- 1:32:17Well, we know it's an inline motor, so we're good there.
- 1:32:21Sad enough, driving and having to worry about the person next to you, the
- 1:32:26person behind you, the person in front of you, the deer that could run out.
- 1:32:30And now you have to worry about.
- 1:32:32The person above you,
- 1:32:36I mean, this is great reason to have a moon roof so that you can be constantly
- 1:32:40checking above you to see if an air car is going to fall on your head.
- 1:32:44Well, when we get a little further into this episode, we're going to hear more
- 1:32:48about you having to work people above you anyway, but I'm looking at this
- 1:32:52and I'm wondering how does it convert?
- 1:32:54Where are the wings?
- 1:32:55I don't get it.
- 1:32:55It's a helicopter.
- 1:32:57It's called a helicopter.
- 1:32:58And I see a picture of it without wings, but I don't see.
- 1:33:01You get out and you pull the panel off and then it has a track that you
- 1:33:05slide it in the back in the trunk.
- 1:33:07Yeah.
- 1:33:07I trust an aviation device that I've.
- 1:33:11Put together.
- 1:33:11Yes, that's exactly what I want.
- 1:33:14It's just like those guys in Japan, where you see them walking away from the train
- 1:33:19station with their 11 by 17 briefcase and it suddenly turns into a mountain bike.
- 1:33:25There's nothing else in the briefcase.
- 1:33:27I don't know where the wheels were stored or anything else, but it's just like that.
- 1:33:31It's just like that, except it's nothing like that.
- 1:33:34A hundred percent.
- 1:33:35But here's what we're going to do.
- 1:33:36We're going to retire this thought.
- 1:33:38We're going to put a pin in it and we're going to invite our guests to jump on
- 1:33:42a special Patreon minisode, where we continue this conversation completely
- 1:33:48unfiltered for your enjoyment to not suck up the entirety of the drive thru.
- 1:33:53We implore you to jump over to patreon.
- 1:33:55com forward slash GT Motorsports to continue that conversation.
- 1:33:58Well, I think it's time that we move on to rich people thangs.
- 1:34:02I don't know if this is really.
- 1:34:04Rich people fangs, but we've lumped it under this category for anyone who is a
- 1:34:08fan of Lego, which, okay, I mean, some Lego sets are definitely a rich people
- 1:34:13thing, but they have a speed champions line in the Lego brand, and they've
- 1:34:18come out with a new lineup in 2022.
- 1:34:21So if you're looking to add to your collection, this year will
- 1:34:25be releasing the Lotus Evija.
- 1:34:27The Lamborghini Kunta in 1970.
- 1:34:30Ferrari five 12 M.
- 1:34:31The Mercedes A MG F1 W 12 E performance alongside the Mercedes a MG Project.
- 1:34:39One, I think that's two in one set.
- 1:34:41And then the Aston Martin Valkyrie a MR Pro, along with the Aston Martin
- 1:34:47Vantage, GT three in one set together.
- 1:34:50That's a heck of a lineup.
- 1:34:52These range about 20 for the single, but the, when they're
- 1:34:55in the two pack, it's 30 or 40.
- 1:34:58I forget the scale.
- 1:34:59Like they're almost like one 24th.
- 1:35:02So they're about six, seven inches long, not as big as a one 18 scale car.
- 1:35:05So it's actually a good size model.
- 1:35:07If you're not interested in, you know, die cast or anything like that.
- 1:35:09And if you want to play Legos or whatever, it's, it's pretty cool.
- 1:35:12I have a couple of myself.
- 1:35:13I haven't unboxed them yet.
- 1:35:14They are pretty neat.
- 1:35:15I'm glad to see that Lego is putting some more attention and effort into supporting
- 1:35:19the motorsports community with Legos.
- 1:35:21I think that's pretty neat.
- 1:35:21So the other rich people thing, which I definitely opinion rich
- 1:35:25people thing or not, I think it is cyber quad for kids, cyber.
- 1:35:31What?
- 1:35:32Huh?
- 1:35:32Tesla.
- 1:35:32Yes.
- 1:35:33Cyber wad quad four wheel ATV.
- 1:35:36And it's.
- 1:35:38Cyber.
- 1:35:38So it's got the look of the cyber truck.
- 1:35:41So it's the cyber quad and obviously it's battery powered electric.
- 1:35:46It's got the lithium ion battery, has 15 miles of range,
- 1:35:49top speed of 10 miles an hour.
- 1:35:50It's suitable for eight years old and up.
- 1:35:53These are no longer available.
- 1:35:55They're out of stock right now.
- 1:35:57I think they just started.
- 1:35:58In stock?
- 1:35:59They were.
- 1:35:59They were.
- 1:35:59They started shipping out at the end of 21 in December.
- 1:36:03So I believe people have already started receiving them.
- 1:36:05You can actually go on eBay.
- 1:36:06People are already trying to resell them for more.
- 1:36:09But what do you think this costs?
- 1:36:11This Power Wheels?
- 1:36:13Power, power, power wheels.
- 1:36:15How many Dogecoin do I need to spend to buy this?
- 1:36:18You say that, but the item number on this is 14135 Doge.
- 1:36:24So then it's, it's 1400, 135 Doge.
- 1:36:27That's how much it costs.
- 1:36:28Okay.
- 1:36:29Well then I guess the equivalency in USD is 1900.
- 1:36:34What?
- 1:36:35Actually for a quad, is that right on par, Brad?
- 1:36:38What do you think?
- 1:36:38No.
- 1:36:39No?
- 1:36:39What's a quad cost these days?
- 1:36:41Yamaha or something.
- 1:36:42What do they cost?
- 1:36:43So the top one to get the Razor, I believe, the Razor Dirt Quad, which
- 1:36:47does also does 10 miles an hour is 700.
- 1:36:51Wow.
- 1:36:51Okay.
- 1:36:51And it's an electric ATV.
- 1:36:53That's a bit of a dealer markup there on that.
- 1:36:56So I'm not sure what you're for 1, 900 that you couldn't get.
- 1:37:00in the razor.
- 1:37:02Well, you're getting the actual cyber quad.
- 1:37:05I mean, okay, you're getting a Tesla product for your kid.
- 1:37:08So I want to know how the wiper blades work on this.
- 1:37:11We have wiper blades.
- 1:37:12Oh, perfect.
- 1:37:13Excellent.
- 1:37:14Excellent.
- 1:37:14It doesn't need them.
- 1:37:15It doesn't have a windshield.
- 1:37:16So on our special breakaway minisode of this particular drive through,
- 1:37:21we talked about all sorts of crazy people and driving in the city,
- 1:37:24but I think we have to return to our normal crazies down in Florida.
- 1:37:28You know, in defense of Florida, we love you just as we love every state.
- 1:37:32I did try to find news out of other states.
- 1:37:37I tried really hard.
- 1:37:38I looked through a lot and unfortunately, once again, A lot
- 1:37:43of the good stuff's coming out of Florida, you know, I can't help that.
- 1:37:46Okay.
- 1:37:47Can't hold me responsible for this completely.
- 1:37:49It's not all Florida news.
- 1:37:50I'm going to save.
- 1:37:51There's some good ones that have not come out of Florida, actually not come
- 1:37:54out of the United States, spoiler alert.
- 1:37:57So we'll get to those.
- 1:37:58But we'll start with this guy, you know, this is like the stupid criminal file.
- 1:38:03Like you clearly have done something wrong because you have
- 1:38:07an ankle monitor and you're out and about in the red side by side.
- 1:38:12And then you start knocking on people's doors because your ankle
- 1:38:14monitor battery is running low.
- 1:38:16So of course you need to get that bad boy charged back up.
- 1:38:18Cause if it runs out of juice, suddenly the alarms are going to go
- 1:38:21off and popo going to come after you.
- 1:38:23Right.
- 1:38:24Well, you know, I guess people started reporting like, Hey, this
- 1:38:27You know, dudes coming around.
- 1:38:29Yeah, you know, that side by side stolen.
- 1:38:35So, uh, yeah, he got arrested trying to charge his ankle monitor
- 1:38:39up while going around on a stolen.
- 1:38:43I'm thinking his original felony was probably also grand theft, but
- 1:38:47he also has an extensive history, including battery burglary and grand
- 1:38:51theft is stand up guy stand up guy.
- 1:38:54He's just misunderstood.
- 1:38:55He's a class act.
- 1:38:56Now this next one also involves some, some grand theft, but a
- 1:39:01little bit of a different spin.
- 1:39:02So, you know, people like to go out and party and it's
- 1:39:05Florida, there ain't no rules.
- 1:39:07So, Hey, everything's open.
- 1:39:09So, you know, you're out at the bar late one night doing as you do.
- 1:39:13Unfortunately, you've had a few too many and the responsible person.
- 1:39:17Would pick up the phone, although maybe they'd use it as a sun visor
- 1:39:21too many times during the day and, you know, the battery is dead.
- 1:39:24I don't know.
- 1:39:25You'd call an Uber, get you home.
- 1:39:27Now, this guy, you know, upon exiting drunk, he couldn't find his car.
- 1:39:31And you're thinking, yes, you shouldn't be driving anyway.
- 1:39:34No, no, no.
- 1:39:35This guy's a problem solver.
- 1:39:37Can't find his car?
- 1:39:38Let me just steal a car and go look for my car in the stolen car.
- 1:39:46But while I steal this car, and I believe it was like, what was it?
- 1:39:50It was a Honda Fit.
- 1:39:50So anyway, he steals this car, proceeds to, I don't know, stall
- 1:39:54it somehow on a railroad track.
- 1:39:57And then a train comes along and the train hits the car and
- 1:40:02launches it into somebody's house.
- 1:40:04And this is that night.
- 1:40:06So as the picture shows, this car is like up on its tail, smashed demolished by
- 1:40:12the train inside of this person's house.
- 1:40:15And then he proceeds to run away on foot, vandalizes a fruit
- 1:40:20cart and then tries to steal.
- 1:40:22Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- 1:40:26How does one vandalize a fruit cart?
- 1:40:31He vandalized the fruit stand!
- 1:40:33And then he stole the forklift that was at the fruit stand and tried to get away
- 1:40:37because the money was in the banana stand.
- 1:40:40That's why he's saying vandalized, not sodomized.
- 1:40:44Oh, that's brutal.
- 1:40:48But he told the cops.
- 1:40:50He made sure to let them know that he was looking for his stolen car.
- 1:40:53It's all good, it's all good, it's all good.
- 1:40:54He flags them down to tell them he was looking for his stolen car.
- 1:40:59So it's all okay.
- 1:41:01Where's my car?
- 1:41:02It's because two wrongs make a right, right?
- 1:41:05Oh my goodness.
- 1:41:06I don't know where people Too much, too much to drink.
- 1:41:11That person had apparently not enough.
- 1:41:13Okay.
- 1:41:19Florida people in general, I guess apparently are going to
- 1:41:22get very disappointed here.
- 1:41:24Pretty soon because I think up until very recently, Florida is one of the
- 1:41:29few states remaining that essentially doesn't have rules around what you
- 1:41:35can write on your vanity plate.
- 1:41:36And so now they're changing their minds on that and they're going to regulate it.
- 1:41:42Might be recalling people's tags that are already out there and they've already
- 1:41:46denied 500 applications last year, I guess when they started cracking down on
- 1:41:52bad vanity plates and, and some of 'em, it's like, okay, clever 2020 WTFF you.
- 1:41:592020.
- 1:42:00Okay.
- 1:42:01Aha.
- 1:42:02And okay, slow.
- 1:42:03POS Shitbox was another one like.
- 1:42:07All right.
- 1:42:08You're just having commentary on yourself.
- 1:42:10I don't know.
- 1:42:11And then they just get a little bit weird.
- 1:42:13You know, there's some political commentary ones in there.
- 1:42:15Then there's drug man.
- 1:42:16I don't think you should probably be advertising for possibly legal habits.
- 1:42:22Um, that's marketing, marketing, right?
- 1:42:24Dead AF.
- 1:42:26I'm not sure what that is supposed to signify.
- 1:42:28I mean, killer.
- 1:42:30Here's another one that could be marketing for themselves.
- 1:42:32Not in a good way.
- 1:42:34Fat AF.
- 1:42:35F T B S T R D.
- 1:42:37That's fat bastard.
- 1:42:38Yep.
- 1:42:39F K diet.
- 1:42:41Okay.
- 1:42:42These people are like personally attacking themselves.
- 1:42:45It's very strange.
- 1:42:46Then the weirdest one.
- 1:42:49T Bundy.
- 1:42:50Like, really?
- 1:42:51I get this one though.
- 1:42:53I get it though.
- 1:42:54Brown Volkswagen Beetle.
- 1:42:55Yeah, I'm going to give the shout out to the girls over at Sinister Hood.
- 1:42:58You need to listen to the Ted Bundy episode or multiple episodes on Ted Bundy.
- 1:43:02So this all gets explained on their podcast.
- 1:43:05And that is, that is clever, but also creepy.
- 1:43:09They didn't say that it went on a brown Volkswagen.
- 1:43:12They're saying how creepy would it have been had the application
- 1:43:15been on a I skimmed, I skimmed.
- 1:43:19Oh, then I wonder if.
- 1:43:20Okay.
- 1:43:21Yeah.
- 1:43:22Yes.
- 1:43:23Creepy.
- 1:43:24So yeah, apparently they're cracking down on that.
- 1:43:28So can't imagine what the other plates that have gone
- 1:43:31through in the past must say.
- 1:43:33Way to go, Florida.
- 1:43:34Way to try and fast things up.
- 1:43:36Well, apparently there's some other states that are buck wild already.
- 1:43:38So there's a tag idea right there.
- 1:43:40Buck wild.
- 1:43:41Buck wild.
- 1:43:41That's safe though.
- 1:43:42There's nothing bad about that.
- 1:43:44I don't think.
- 1:43:47All right.
- 1:43:47So now we're going to go north to our Canadian friends and Canada
- 1:43:51ones are always good, you know, because they always, I think
- 1:43:54so much better of Canadians.
- 1:43:56And then when I see stuff like this, I'm just like Canada.
- 1:43:59Okay.
- 1:44:00It's not a kid.
- 1:44:04I love Canada.
- 1:44:07I enjoy visiting there.
- 1:44:08This woman somehow bless her heart.
- 1:44:11Ends up some sort of frozen water body, I think a river.
- 1:44:16She ends up on this river in her bright yellow scion, from
- 1:44:22what I can tell in that picture.
- 1:44:23But then the ice breaks and so the car starts sinking.
- 1:44:27Now, you'd think a sane person would be like, time to get the F O.
- 1:44:32GTFO this thing.
- 1:44:33No, no, no.
- 1:44:34She stands on the back of the car, proceeds to take a selfie,
- 1:44:40as everybody else is trying to, like, come to her rescue and
- 1:44:44call police and do whatever.
- 1:44:46She's just chillin As her car is sinking, taking selfies.
- 1:44:50I mean, you got to capture the moment.
- 1:44:52That's for the gram, as Brad would say, for the gram.
- 1:44:55What other time in your life would you get the opportunity to stand on a sinking
- 1:44:59scion and take a picture of yourself?
- 1:45:01I mean, you know, this one Twitter person, I think, summarized it pretty well.
- 1:45:06You know, she captured the moment with a selfie while people
- 1:45:08hurried and worried to help her.
- 1:45:12Yeah, 100%.
- 1:45:12They should have just left her there.
- 1:45:14But then the best part is it's like inception, right?
- 1:45:17Because there's a picture of some other person with their cell phone
- 1:45:21taking a picture of her on her cell phone doing the selfie thing.
- 1:45:24So it's like this cascading failure.
- 1:45:26For the gram!
- 1:45:27I have saved the absolute best, I think, for last.
- 1:45:31I think this has got to be tops.
- 1:45:34And this comes from our friends across the pond in the UK.
- 1:45:38Oh, apparently an Englishman's home is his castle and that pretty
- 1:45:43much stands up in court as defense.
- 1:45:45Really?
- 1:45:46So this man who's got this estate farmland or whatever, he's a farmer.
- 1:45:51Not Jeremy Clarkson.
- 1:45:52Fourth generation hill farmer, this man.
- 1:45:55Cutting to the chase, he uses essentially a telehandler, so like a
- 1:45:59forklift, telehandler with a fork on the front end, so like a forklift,
- 1:46:02and he flips and pushes some guy's car off his property that refused
- 1:46:07to move his car out of his driveway.
- 1:46:09Watch the video, there is a video of it.
- 1:46:13This is epic.
- 1:46:14This dude's car got like a flat or broke down, asked him repeatedly to move.
- 1:46:19The driver, I think, didn't get into an altercation, but this other dude that
- 1:46:23was his friend showed up who was drunk and shirtless and like allegedly punched
- 1:46:27the guy first, which I guess He was like, nope, forklift, telehandler thing.
- 1:46:32I'm gonna take care of y'all.
- 1:46:33He pushed it out into the road, turned it onto the side of the
- 1:46:37road and just like left it there.
- 1:46:39That is awesome.
- 1:46:42And he was taken to court, but the charges were all dismissed because he
- 1:46:45was protecting his Oh, before we move on, did you all watch the end of the video?
- 1:46:52He hit the guy with the forklift.
- 1:46:54Oh, yeah.
- 1:46:55Yeah.
- 1:46:55Well, he turned the forklift and the guy was standing there.
- 1:46:58Yeah.
- 1:46:59No, he, he hit the guy with the forklift.
- 1:47:01Yeah.
- 1:47:01The guy was standing there.
- 1:47:02He knew the guy was standing there and he turned the forklift pretty rapidly.
- 1:47:05More power to him.
- 1:47:06You know what?
- 1:47:07Get off my lawn.
- 1:47:08Get off my lawn.
- 1:47:10Well, that being said, I think it's time that we go behind
- 1:47:13the for some motor sports news.
- 1:47:15So what's going on in the world of NASCAR time?
- 1:47:18Not something you usually report about?
- 1:47:20No, um, it's just something that came across Netflix apparently
- 1:47:23on the 22nd of February.
- 1:47:25They're going to be airing a docu series.
- 1:47:27It's six episodes.
- 1:47:28It's called Race Bubba Wallace.
- 1:47:30So it's a docu series on the NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace.
- 1:47:34And his NASCAR journey thus far, not really much other information in, in the
- 1:47:39preview for it, but one can only imagine.
- 1:47:42Well, maybe we'll have to take a look at it and talk about it
- 1:47:44in the next drive thru, right?
- 1:47:45But speaking of other dramas on television, what about Formula One?
- 1:47:49What's going on over there, Brad?
- 1:47:50What's the big news?
- 1:47:51Uh, All the manufacturers are, or all the teams are releasing their new 2022 cars.
- 1:47:57I think Haas was the first team to do it.
- 1:47:59And yeah, I mean, all the cars pretty much look the same.
- 1:48:02They're all cool.
- 1:48:03I believe the wheels are bigger.
- 1:48:04I mean, the tires are bigger than they have been previously.
- 1:48:07So that should help.
- 1:48:08So I'm just going to have to wait and see how they perform on in some
- 1:48:11way, make the racing more exciting.
- 1:48:13We're going to go ahead and see.
- 1:48:15We always say that every year I hear that phrase.
- 1:48:17We're going to make the racing more exciting.
- 1:48:19Has that ever proven to be true since Bernie Ecclestone or Ecclestine, whatever
- 1:48:24his name is, is no longer in charge.
- 1:48:26And that other guy sports or whatever, took it over.
- 1:48:29They have made some improvements.
- 1:48:30And actually this year is the first year where they implemented a lot of different
- 1:48:35changes, especially to the cars and stuff.
- 1:48:36So I think it could be good.
- 1:48:38Last year they were done.
- 1:48:39They were playing around at a lot of the races with the
- 1:48:42sprint races, a qualifying race.
- 1:48:44I think that was really cool.
- 1:48:45Inadvertently or without their even trying some of the races ended up
- 1:48:50almost in like a reverse grid because of red flags and stuff like that on
- 1:48:54the restart, which was super exciting.
- 1:48:56That wasn't anything that they actually did.
- 1:48:57It was just kind of a coincidence thing.
- 1:48:59They are trying to make changes.
- 1:49:01Some of them make it more exciting, but it depends on what
- 1:49:04you're looking for in racing.
- 1:49:05Some of our F1 fans hate the idea of the sprint race because it takes
- 1:49:09away from the actual qualifying and it adds nothing really.
- 1:49:13It discourages someone from actually trying to qualify, you
- 1:49:17know, and have the fastest lap.
- 1:49:18I'm going to watch anyway.
- 1:49:19I like F1 racing.
- 1:49:21I think it's much more exciting than that bit IndyCar.
- 1:49:23I thought the new Formula cars were IndyCars.
- 1:49:26They really look.
- 1:49:27Similar.
- 1:49:28They, I mean, I've looked at, they, they look identical, but they're
- 1:49:31I mean, the McLaren's, the Astons.
- 1:49:32I was like, man, that's a cool livery on that indie car.
- 1:49:35You guys got there.
- 1:49:35I'm like, whatever.
- 1:49:36But to your point about making the racing more exciting and, and the changes,
- 1:49:40my hot take on this is if you want the racing to be more exciting, get rid
- 1:49:44of all this balance of power nonsense.
- 1:49:46What the people want, what the fans want is not.
- 1:49:49Everybody to be the same.
- 1:49:50This isn't go kart racing.
- 1:49:51This isn't even NASCAR for that respect.
- 1:49:54And NASCAR, I think should change to let people build their cars.
- 1:49:57We're going to talk about here with Rolex.
- 1:49:59And actually we should probably maybe transition to Rolex at the same time.
- 1:50:02You know, when they did the balance of power on the Corvettes, if you can't
- 1:50:05build a car that competes, build a better car, stop penalizing everybody.
- 1:50:09If you're hitting, if you're following the marks of the rules.
- 1:50:12Build a better car.
- 1:50:13The only caveat to that is I would say institute some sort
- 1:50:17of budget to keep some of that.
- 1:50:18I mean, there's a huge disparity in the amount of money that
- 1:50:21some of these race teams have.
- 1:50:22Like obviously the factory teams like Mercedes are going to have a significant
- 1:50:26budget compared to a team like Haas.
- 1:50:29Why don't we split F1 down the middle and do like they did in
- 1:50:31WRC where it's WRC1 and WRC2.
- 1:50:33So there's F1A and F1B.
- 1:50:36It's essentially what it is.
- 1:50:37There's the best and then the best of the rest.
- 1:50:41But that's an unofficial thing.
- 1:50:42It's not official, but yeah, I would, I would agree with that.
- 1:50:46But look at it this way.
- 1:50:47If it was cheaper for Williams to develop, like they did in the seventies,
- 1:50:52like a six wheeled formula car and have it be a V12, let them do it.
- 1:50:56Who cares?
- 1:50:57Like this whole cookie cutter, everybody's got the same car
- 1:51:00with different skin on it.
- 1:51:02It doesn't do anything for me.
- 1:51:03This is why I stopped being interested in Formula One, was
- 1:51:06right after the V10 era, where all the cars were basically the same.
- 1:51:10And during the V10 era, it was, it was still different enough.
- 1:51:14Ferrari still had their motors.
- 1:51:15BMW had their motors.
- 1:51:17Renault had their motors.
- 1:51:17They were all different enough.
- 1:51:19And they perform differently.
- 1:51:20Some were better than others to your point Ferrari has deep
- 1:51:23pockets, you know, things like that.
- 1:51:25But once they decided to make all the F1 cars, cookie cutter, I'm done.
- 1:51:29I checked out.
- 1:51:29I don't care.
- 1:51:30I see that in a lot of other racing and it, and it hurts me because
- 1:51:34I think it takes away, From the technological progression, it
- 1:51:38takes away from the ingenuity, it takes away from the originality.
- 1:51:42And when you're looking at the cars, you're like, well, what's the difference
- 1:51:44between the Aston and the Honda?
- 1:51:47There should be a clear delineation between what they are and what they're
- 1:51:50capable of, not the same thing.
- 1:51:52Here it is.
- 1:51:53It's this, there is a team spending down to 140, 000.
- 1:51:5640 million from 1 7 5 in 2020.
- 1:51:58Oh damn.
- 1:51:59Is that all to, to help level the playing field for smaller teams like Haas, as
- 1:52:02they go up against outfits with relatively unlimited resources like Ferrari and
- 1:52:05Mercedes and Red Bull, which used to spend upwards of 400 million annually.
- 1:52:09So yes, they're instituting that as well as all these other changes to kind of
- 1:52:13more, here's the underdog story, right?
- 1:52:15Ferrari spends 400 million and they get their butts handed to them by
- 1:52:19Williams, who can only spend 1 75.
- 1:52:22So who cares?
- 1:52:22Let them spend.
- 1:52:24A billion dollars if they want to, but build a better mousetrap,
- 1:52:28figure out a way to do it.
- 1:52:29And you know where it comes from.
- 1:52:31The better engineers are the ones that do more with less.
- 1:52:34That's been proven time and time again.
- 1:52:37The cars that succeed are the ones that were built with less.
- 1:52:41And they got more out of them than the folks that had deep pockets.
- 1:52:44That's the Porsche story.
- 1:52:45That's the early Italian sports car stories where they didn't have
- 1:52:48anything and they built from nothing.
- 1:52:50So I think we've, we've gone away from that and it, it takes away from the
- 1:52:54racing in my opinion, because it's like watching a video game, right?
- 1:52:58And we'll talk about that in a minute too.
- 1:53:00I want to talk about Rolex before we transition to some WRC news.
- 1:53:04I mentioned the, you know, balance of power a couple of times when
- 1:53:06we talked about the Corvette.
- 1:53:08I thought that was, I hate to say, sort of pathetic.
- 1:53:10Like, I really felt bad for Team Corvette.
- 1:53:12I don't know why they were trying to like, or they were forced to step down
- 1:53:15to meet the new rules or whatever.
- 1:53:17Maybe the Corvette's in this weird gray area where it should really be
- 1:53:20like a GT2 car, which doesn't exist.
- 1:53:23You know, this kind of thing.
- 1:53:24I, I just felt like, meh, it didn't really help.
- 1:53:27The, the field was bigger than it's been in a number of years, but.
- 1:53:31I also wasn't impressed.
- 1:53:33I'm not happy with this LMP3 thing.
- 1:53:35It just feels like there's more of the same cars on the track and
- 1:53:38there's no variation and on the theme, you know, stuff like that.
- 1:53:41What'd you think, Brad, at least of the lineup and stuff like that for Rolex?
- 1:53:44Uh, I thought the top level was fun.
- 1:53:47It was fun to watch.
- 1:53:48The VPI class was a lot of fun.
- 1:53:50I can do that.
- 1:53:51The Acuras and the Cadillacs go at each other.
- 1:53:53It was cool.
- 1:53:54Corvette, I don't know.
- 1:53:55Cause I don't know if I fully understand the rule changes with that, but it was
- 1:54:00my understanding that both the GTD and the GTT pro cars are basically classed
- 1:54:05the same now, the only difference is the driver's skill, really, if
- 1:54:08that's the case, I mean, again, with the balance of power or balance of
- 1:54:12performance or whatever, whatever it is, I haven't looked too much into it
- 1:54:15and how it affected Corvette, this race.
- 1:54:18I don't know.
- 1:54:18Overall, I thought the race was fun to watch the bits that I did.
- 1:54:21Watch the 9 11's was insane.
- 1:54:24The front of the pack end of the race wasn't nearly as important as
- 1:54:28the battle between those two 9 11's.
- 1:54:29That was legitimately awesome racing.
- 1:54:33Those last 18 minutes where they're battling back and forth, bump drafting,
- 1:54:37pushing each other and inevitably It ends in a cloud of smoke and disappointment.
- 1:54:41It was, it was epic.
- 1:54:42The front of the pack, I could have cared less what was happening between
- 1:54:45Acura and Cadillac and all that stuff.
- 1:54:47Cause that race was already over by the time the second place car
- 1:54:50had dropped back a couple seconds.
- 1:54:52I was like, they're never going to make that up.
- 1:54:53And I'm glad the cameras turned their attention to the GTLM cars
- 1:54:57because that was, that was exciting.
- 1:54:59I waited 23 hours and 40 minutes for that 20 minutes of action.
- 1:55:03And it's a shame that it had to come at that point.
- 1:55:05And there was cool stuff that happened in the middle of the night.
- 1:55:08But I think the thing that made the race a complete drag was these extended
- 1:55:13yellows and I watched most of the race.
- 1:55:15I only got a couple hours of sleep.
- 1:55:17And so I was, I was tuned in for a lot of it.
- 1:55:19It was incredible.
- 1:55:20I think we were over 20 yellows in the whole race, but they like went on for.
- 1:55:25Ever.
- 1:55:25And it was just like, what are we still doing under yellow that we come out
- 1:55:29of yellow and then we go into another yellow and it's like, Oh, we crud.
- 1:55:33And it just, there were parts of the race that were just painful, but that that
- 1:55:37ending definitely made up the difference.
- 1:55:39You know, going back to the balance of power, I felt bad for Corvette,
- 1:55:43and this isn't a slight against Lexus.
- 1:55:45But when the Lexuses are walking away from the Corvettes, I
- 1:55:48was like, something's wrong.
- 1:55:49Either cars are busted or whatever.
- 1:55:51And, and again, it's not a slight against Lexus, but it's just that
- 1:55:53Lexus has been riding that same car for what feels like forever.
- 1:55:58And I'm sure they've made advances and whatever, but I don't wanna say
- 1:56:02that the Lexus isn't competitive, but it's not winning GTLM.
- 1:56:05The front runners have been Porsche and Corvette and BMW and things like that.
- 1:56:09They're always just sort of there.
- 1:56:11But to see the Corvette just getting walked.
- 1:56:14By the Lexus, which is tried and true, you know, it's kind of always there.
- 1:56:19Like I said, it just, it hurt a little bit to see that.
- 1:56:22And I, I don't know what's going on.
- 1:56:24Hopefully they'll figure that all out.
- 1:56:25A couple of things that I thought were interesting, the safety
- 1:56:28car was that color was heinous.
- 1:56:29I mean, I, I know that it has to stand out, but that BMW did not look
- 1:56:32good in whatever that yellow was.
- 1:56:35Please repaint that car, rewrap it.
- 1:56:37Oh God, that was awful.
- 1:56:38The other thing was I had a hard time differentiating between the
- 1:56:41new Benz's and the nine 11s because from behind, they look a lot alike.
- 1:56:46The rear end of the nine 11 is so big now.
- 1:56:49I don't know.
- 1:56:50So that was hard to like tell them apart when they were in traffic.
- 1:56:53But the other thing.
- 1:56:54That I thought was interesting was John Pearson.
- 1:56:57Apparently he's 15 year old.
- 1:56:58He next year, he's going to be the youngest driver in Rolex history.
- 1:57:02So I thought that was pretty cool.
- 1:57:03They did a spot with him for a couple of minutes, kind of interviewed him.
- 1:57:06I'd love to know what his backstory is at 15, you know, going to
- 1:57:10be 16 years old next year.
- 1:57:12How do you go from high school to driving?
- 1:57:16Well, yes.
- 1:57:16Okay.
- 1:57:17The answer is obvious,
- 1:57:20but I still think it's pretty cool.
- 1:57:22I'd love to know what that backstory is.
- 1:57:23So 23 is going to be an awesome year.
- 1:57:25There's a lot of new cars coming.
- 1:57:27I'm really curious to see how Rolex shapes up.
- 1:57:30If the teams that are going to go to Le Mans are going to use Rolex as their
- 1:57:35test race, because it's going to make for a really exciting Rolex next year.
- 1:57:40I'm cautiously optimistic.
- 1:57:42But I think it's time we switch to some WRC news.
- 1:57:45What do you got, Tanya?
- 1:57:46Isabelle Galmiche, a French co driver in Raleigh, she teamed up recently
- 1:57:51with Sebastian Loeb and has become, I guess, maybe the second woman, or
- 1:57:56at least the first woman in the last 25 years to, uh, Co drive at Monte
- 1:58:01Carlo rally and be in the winning car.
- 1:58:05So congrats to her.
- 1:58:06And she's got an interesting story that this is not her full time gig.
- 1:58:10She kind of moonlights as a co driver and she has for, for many years.
- 1:58:14It's the first time, uh, competing with in the right seat with Sebastian Loeb.
- 1:58:18So good for her, her, her day job is a math teacher.
- 1:58:21That's awesome.
- 1:58:22And she's very humble sounding.
- 1:58:23She doesn't want to have a lot of us and must about any of this or bring the
- 1:58:27trophy in the school to show anybody.
- 1:58:29Yes.
- 1:58:30Kind of wants to go about her day.
- 1:58:32And, you know, a lot of people that may not be intimate with how WRC works and
- 1:58:38rally, you know, there's two people in the car, they're going flat out, you
- 1:58:42know, crazy on these mountain roads and the navigator's job is super important.
- 1:58:47It's actually even more difficult than the driving in the sense that
- 1:58:49they keep the pace and the rhythm of the run itself of the past, right.
- 1:58:55They're giving out instructions to the driver in advance because there's On
- 1:58:59many occasions, the driver only sees the run one time, and it's usually in
- 1:59:04a passenger vehicle at lower speed.
- 1:59:06And what they're doing on that one run is taking notes about the course,
- 1:59:10about the elevations, the camber, where there's holes, where you need
- 1:59:13to turn in, where to watch out, what's on the exit of the corner.
- 1:59:16And those hieroglyphs, those instructions that they write are super important.
- 1:59:20So very complex type of shorthand that they use.
- 1:59:23And they need to be able to obviously remember that, but also come to an
- 1:59:27agreement with their driver on what the turn is, what they're going to do.
- 1:59:31So she's got a really difficult job working with any of the drivers, but even
- 1:59:35a world champion like Sebastian Loeb.
- 1:59:37I mean, it's an honor and a privilege, but also it's, it's a challenge, right?
- 1:59:42So.
- 1:59:42Obviously they don't have a, uh, language barrier because they're both French.
- 1:59:45I'm proud of her.
- 1:59:46I mean, it's a tough job and being in the right seat and not really looking
- 1:59:50also where you're going and just reading that book line after line and
- 1:59:55being on those difficult stages and crazy weather conditions and all that.
- 1:59:59It's a tough job.
- 2:00:00I don't think I could stump.
- 2:00:01I don't think I have the stomach for it, honestly, because I probably get
- 2:00:04sick, you know, just trying to do that.
- 2:00:07In the passenger seat, but to your point about the last time it was done, and I
- 2:00:11might be wrong about my WRC knowledge, but I think it goes almost as far back as
- 2:00:16Michel Mouton and Fabrizio Pons as winning female co driver navigator at Monte Carlo.
- 2:00:23It might be that far back, which is 35 plus years.
- 2:00:26Instead it was Fabrizia Pons with Piero Liatti in 1997.
- 2:00:31So after she left Michelle, yeah, yeah, okay.
- 2:00:34But it was Fabrizia then, still the same navigator as it was for Michelle Mouton.
- 2:00:38So there you go.
- 2:00:39I mean, she's famous as, you know, one of the early female rally navigators.
- 2:00:43So that's awesome.
- 2:00:44It's good to see that.
- 2:00:45And we want to promote that.
- 2:00:46And I know she doesn't want the glory, but you know, I'm proud of her.
- 2:00:49That's awesome.
- 2:00:50It's a tough job.
- 2:00:50It's a thankless job.
- 2:00:51That's for sure.
- 2:00:52So a little bit of news from the e sports world, right, Brad?
- 2:00:55Yeah, I guess if you're a PlayStation person, which I'm
- 2:00:58not, but GT7, is coming out.
- 2:01:02It is going to be released on March 4th of this year.
- 2:01:06It brings with it 400 cars at 34 different locations with 90 different layouts.
- 2:01:12It's going to be available on both the PS4 and the PS5.
- 2:01:15And yeah, if you play Gran Turismo for some reason over Forza,
- 2:01:21then, you know, this is your bag.
- 2:01:23I'm just curious, how long have they been waiting for this new
- 2:01:25version of Gran Turismo to come out?
- 2:01:27I mean, the last Gran Turismo I saw was Gran Turismo Sport.
- 2:01:30Which that one was, I think it was all supposed to be like multiplayer online
- 2:01:35racing based and not much of like a campaign or anything like you get with
- 2:01:39all the other forces and everything.
- 2:01:41I don't know.
- 2:01:41Apparently this one, they've they're going back to the heyday of grand
- 2:01:44Turismo, which I guess would be like what grand Turismo three, two, two or three.
- 2:01:50So I think they've kind of gone back to that campaign mode style
- 2:01:54and added back in a lot of the.
- 2:01:56Other, I guess, side features that that had, which were kind of the
- 2:01:59nifty, silly things that was Gran Turismo, like buying the used cars.
- 2:02:05And I thought that was the coolest thing.
- 2:02:07Doing mods and like all that kind of stuff.
- 2:02:09So they're bringing that back in.
- 2:02:11I like the wheel swapping was my favorite.
- 2:02:13You could get wheels on other cars.
- 2:02:15Washing your car.
- 2:02:17Oh, yeah, you could wash your car.
- 2:02:18That was pretty cool.
- 2:02:19One of my biggest gripes with the most recent Gran Turismo was the track
- 2:02:23selection, I guess because Forza has so many tracks under contract, and
- 2:02:28our licensing, you know, they own licensing to all these different tracks.
- 2:02:31As HPDE people, we drive a whole bunch of different tracks around the country
- 2:02:34and everything, and you couldn't drive some of those in, Gran Turismo
- 2:02:38because they just didn't have them.
- 2:02:40I don't know that there were any tracks that I was actually
- 2:02:42interested in, in Gran Turismo.
- 2:02:44I think that's still the case in seven.
- 2:02:46Cause I had pulled up a track list and they really don't, it seemed
- 2:02:48like a high percentage of what seemed like made up tracks versus actual.
- 2:02:55Tracks forces seems to have a lot more actual tracks when I was a kid.
- 2:02:59I used to love driving those made up tracks.
- 2:03:01Cause I didn't know I've actually been on, or this doesn't interest me at all.
- 2:03:06Oh, you don't, you don't want to drive autumn Valley or whatever that is.
- 2:03:09You know, Forza has Naples Valley, right?
- 2:03:11So it's all good.
- 2:03:15So let's switch over to our HPD junkie trackside report.
- 2:03:19I got a note from Dave Peters the other day, you know, they are still
- 2:03:23backfilling tons of events into the system for the 2022 season.
- 2:03:27Feels like a lot of people are making up for lost time.
- 2:03:29He told me the other day that at Thunder Hill alone, they just entered
- 2:03:3475 events and apparently there's like 80 more for that track itself this year.
- 2:03:39And I'm like, they must be doing something.
- 2:03:41Every day of the week out there in California.
- 2:03:43So he's keeping up the date on that kind of stuff.
- 2:03:46So there's a lot more information being pushed to the website right now.
- 2:03:49So if you want to know what's going on in February and March, hop over to hpdjunkie.
- 2:03:53com and search by track to make it much easier to say, Hey,
- 2:03:56what's going on in my area.
- 2:03:57And you can actually see what's going on from now until the end of the year.
- 2:04:00And obviously it continues to prune itself, expand and contract and all that.
- 2:04:03But I do want Want to announce on behalf of our sponsors
- 2:04:07are very hooked on driving.
- 2:04:08As a reminder, they are going to be at VIR at the beginning of
- 2:04:11March on March 3rd and March 4th.
- 2:04:13This is like one of the earliest events in the DMV on the schedule right now.
- 2:04:19There might be something a little bit earlier, but that's pretty early
- 2:04:22for this area to have a track event followed very soon after by New Jersey
- 2:04:27motor sports park, they're going to be at Thunderbolt on April 9th and 10th.
- 2:04:30And then.
- 2:04:32Two weeks after that, they'll be at Watkins Glen for a three day spring
- 2:04:37fling from April 29th, 30th, and May 1st.
- 2:04:41So they're doing their fall event in the spring as well
- 2:04:45now, three days at Watkins Glen.
- 2:04:47And then it goes from there, right?
- 2:04:48They're at Pocono, A couple more times or Lime Rock and Summit Point, you know,
- 2:04:52Summit Point is back on the schedule.
- 2:04:54They're at Shenandoah for June 18th and 19th and things like that.
- 2:04:58And I also want to give a shout out to Mike and Mona.
- 2:05:00They're actually going to be on the show next week, kicking off season three.
- 2:05:06So you get to hear all about HOD and what their program is like.
- 2:05:10And some really cool behind the scenes content where Mike actually turns
- 2:05:14the tables on me and interviews me.
- 2:05:18during that behind the scenes Patreon minisode.
- 2:05:20So be sure to check that out next week when it hits our main server.
- 2:05:24You know, I mentioned this is the end of season two.
- 2:05:26This is the last episode of season two.
- 2:05:29And I just wanted to kind of just do a quick retrospective for the folks that
- 2:05:33Maybe listening to the show for the first time, you know, this is going to be the
- 2:05:36first episode at the top of the list.
- 2:05:39If you want to go back and want to know when season two started,
- 2:05:42look for the vet motor sports episode with Peter Klein, right?
- 2:05:46Where we talk about their program to get disabled veterans back into
- 2:05:52the motor sports world and all these kinds of programs that they have and
- 2:05:54how they facilitate that and whatnot.
- 2:05:56We also had, what should I buy?
- 2:05:57Ugly cars, parts one and two and nineties cars.
- 2:06:00We kicked off an entire crossover month in the middle of the summer.
- 2:06:03We had Brian from take two podcasts on, we talked about a bunch of car related
- 2:06:07movies and shows and things like that.
- 2:06:08We had Steven Izzy from everything I learned from movies on twice this season.
- 2:06:12We had a lot of fun with them.
- 2:06:13We look forward to doing more projects in the future.
- 2:06:15John Warner the fourth author of the little Anton series
- 2:06:18and noted Portia historian.
- 2:06:20He also has a podcast.
- 2:06:21We did a crossover with him and a shout out to Carolyn Ford and Mark
- 2:06:25Sonnell from the tech transforms podcast, where we talked about the
- 2:06:28intersection of it and the racing world as a crossover episode as well.
- 2:06:33We also had a ton of interviews, awesome interviews with Rob Holland,
- 2:06:37Bobby Parks, David Middleton, Chris Bright from CPX, and our favorite,
- 2:06:40you got a guy, Paul Willemoski.
- 2:06:43Yeah, we did a ton of technical episodes too.
- 2:06:45We had Andrew Rains on from Apex Pro.
- 2:06:47We interviewed the folks over at Liqui Moly.
- 2:06:50We talked to Blackstone Joe over at Blackstone Labs, which
- 2:06:53is also a crossover episode.
- 2:06:55We interviewed James Clay, both for Powerflex and for Bimber World.
- 2:06:59And we talked to Sal Finelli over at Porsche Diesel USA.
- 2:07:02And to prove that we do more than just take laps and do HPD, we
- 2:07:06talked off roading, we talked drag racing, we talked lunar racing.
- 2:07:09I mean, who talks lunar racing these days?
- 2:07:11We do.
- 2:07:12That's who we also celebrated gingerman raceways 25th anniversary.
- 2:07:17And we did a retrospective with summit point, looking back over their
- 2:07:2250 year history, dove into both of the backgrounds of those tracks and
- 2:07:26their evolutions and what the future looks like for those two facilities.
- 2:07:29And there are 56 episodes to catch up on from season two alone, not counting all of
- 2:07:35the bonus and behind the scenes content.
- 2:07:36If you sign up for Patreon, you know, I can't pick a best of articles for
- 2:07:40season two because there are 640 drive through articles that we have
- 2:07:46reviewed on this particular sub arc.
- 2:07:49Of the break, fix podcast.
- 2:07:51So there's a lot to catch up on there.
- 2:07:53There are a lot of fun and don't forget one of our favorite link to the drive
- 2:07:57through episodes has to be this year's.
- 2:08:00We would be remiss retrospective where Tanya rants about all things Tesla.

- 2:08:21And if you've missed out some of the winter episodes on the podcast, we
- 2:08:26celebrated our 100th episode with a crossover with our friend, Steven
- 2:08:30Izzy from everything I learned from movies where we reviewed the
- 2:08:33seventies cult classic Corvette summer.
- 2:08:37Andrew Bank and Mike Kuchavik from Havoc Performance told the tale of two vipers,
- 2:08:42and we cranked up the Wayback Machine by revisiting a Patreon minisode called Toro
- 2:08:47Toro, where we chat with Jason Kennedy from Auto Interests about their humble
- 2:08:51beginnings in the Ford Taurus Club.
