- 0:13Speaker 1: also have Lancelin and generally speaking, when we start our program,
- 0:17Speaker 1: we like to sell, and Kyle Gibson is up to
- 0:20Speaker 1: do the sales pitch.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Yeah, Jim, I sit here and I listen to you,
- 0:26Speaker 2: just asking beg for subscribers. The number of subscribers. Sure,
- 0:30Speaker 2: we'd love for it to go up. We appreciate everybody
- 0:33Speaker 2: who has clicked subscribed and listens to us a couple
- 0:36Speaker 2: times every week, So thank you guys for doing that.

- 0:41Speaker 2: to a podcast wherever you listen to it, share it
- 0:43Speaker 2: with a friend if you think they would like it.
- 0:45Speaker 2: We're just trying to talk some Cardinals baseball. We mixed
- 0:47Speaker 2: in some other baseball. And if you think one of
- 0:49Speaker 2: your friends would like to listen to us talk and
- 0:52Speaker 2: somewhat poke pon of Jim every now and then, go
- 0:54Speaker 2: ahead and send it to your buddy.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I get killed on this show, but don't disappoint. I'll
- 1:00Speaker 1: get some subscribers going, so com can say, look, my
- 1:04Speaker 1: sales pitch worked, all right, boys. The Cardinals have won
- 1:09Speaker 1: five in a row. They just got done sweeping the Astros.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Right now, they're thirteen and eight. They've won five in
- 1:16Speaker 1: a row. So my question, and we'll start with Lance
- 1:18Speaker 1: because we haven't heard from Lance, and Lance, by the way,
- 1:21Speaker 1: you look very handsome today, is when do we start
- 1:24Speaker 1: looking at this seriously? The Cardinals have been playing a
- 1:28Speaker 1: great brand of baseball. Starting rotation has been solid, team speed,
- 1:32Speaker 1: to burn, different hero every night. Everything that's fun to see.
- 1:37Speaker 1: But some smart people say flag days when you start
- 1:40Speaker 1: taking stuff seriously, when do we start looking at this
- 1:42Speaker 1: and going this is the team we got Jim.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Like, there's really no other way to say it. Like
- 1:51Speaker 4: you got a month in you like what you see, right,
- 1:54Speaker 4: it's fun. They're winning the games that are closed. You know,
- 1:59Speaker 4: they're coming from behind and they're doing all the things.
- 2:00Speaker 4: So it's exciting. I think we're gonna wait and see
- 2:04Speaker 4: how the pitching staff holds up. They've been starting to
- 2:06Speaker 4: piece it together in spots better. I think that when
- 2:10Speaker 4: you start getting later in the season and you see
- 2:12Speaker 4: and they've got some guys that haven't done innings and
- 2:16Speaker 4: you know, pitch pool seasons as starters and stuff like that.
- 2:19Speaker 4: So I will say that, you know, it's kind of
- 2:21Speaker 4: a wait and see approach, but when you get to
- 2:23Speaker 4: June and you're above five hundred, you kind of have
- 2:26Speaker 4: a little bit of a better idea who you are.
- 2:28Speaker 4: You've played more teams, teams have gotten to the flow
- 2:31Speaker 4: of things. So right now it's great. Everything everything's going
- 2:35Speaker 4: is about as smooth as it can even though you
- 2:37Speaker 4: know there's some areas of improvement I think, which is
- 2:40Speaker 4: gonna be fun to see those grow as the year
- 2:43Speaker 4: goes on. But they've done a very good job with
- 2:47Speaker 4: the schedule they've had so far and winning the games
- 2:49Speaker 4: that they've been able to come back and win. So
- 2:51Speaker 4: I would say give it another month. I think you
- 2:53Speaker 4: got your opening month right now, and then we'll see
- 2:56Speaker 4: the next month of how everything kind of in and
- 3:00Speaker 4: go from there, and then we can kind of see
- 3:02Speaker 4: who we are come June.
- 3:05Speaker 1: We all understand that it is a rebuild, but it's
- 3:09Speaker 1: been fun baseball. I'd like to see it last. Kle
- 3:12Speaker 1: When do you think you start looking at and go
- 3:15Speaker 1: maybe they can do this for a bit longer.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Jim, I'm going to answer your question with a question,
- 3:22Speaker 2: what are we trying to figure out is real? What
- 3:26Speaker 2: are we trying to figure us real? We know that
- 3:28Speaker 2: they're playing young guys, trying to get them experienced. We
- 3:31Speaker 2: know that they are in a rebuild, retool, however you
- 3:36Speaker 2: want to say it, that is real. And I think
- 3:39Speaker 2: everybody here talking understood going into the season that these
- 3:44Speaker 2: players are good players and they had a chance to
- 3:46Speaker 2: be really good in stretches even one hundred and sixty
- 3:49Speaker 2: two games. So I personally think what we're seeing is
- 3:54Speaker 2: this maybe not even the ceiling, but this is kind
- 3:57Speaker 2: of what I think Cardinal Baseball is going to look
- 3:59Speaker 2: like when these guys are established and consistent and playing
- 4:03Speaker 2: really well. Now, are they always going to win thirteen
- 4:05Speaker 2: out of twenty one games?
- 4:07Speaker 4: Uh?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Probably not, because quick math is telling me that's like
- 4:11Speaker 2: thirty games over five hundred, and that's a lot of wins.
- 4:15Speaker 2: They're not always going to be able to do that.
- 4:16Speaker 2: But do I think this is a capable team of
- 4:19Speaker 2: doing big things?
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah? I think it is.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And I think this is the team that you know
- 4:23Speaker 2: there's gonna be some players mixed in year to year,
- 4:26Speaker 2: but you're looking at a core of players that have
- 4:30Speaker 2: a chance to be really good. In Saint Louis Cardinal
- 4:32Speaker 2: uniforms for years to come. I mean, so I'm not
- 4:36Speaker 2: exactly sure.
- 4:39Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 4:39Speaker 2: That's a tough question, I think, but I agree with Lance,
- 4:42Speaker 2: like June, sure, but then in June you can get
- 4:46Speaker 2: to June and be fifteen games over five hundred and
- 4:48Speaker 2: lose seven in a row, and everybody's gonna say, oh,
- 4:50Speaker 2: here they are the Cardinals we knew they were, and
- 4:53Speaker 2: then it just you know, maybe they have a bad
- 4:55Speaker 2: couple of weeks. But you know, I think I'm gonna
- 4:58Speaker 2: take the same approach. Enjoy the solid baseball that you're
- 5:01Speaker 2: getting to watch. Enjoy consistent, clean, solid baseball that plays
- 5:05Speaker 2: great defense. We've seen the defensive stats. They play great defense,
- 5:08Speaker 2: They're pitching the ball well, they have multiple hitters doing well.
- 5:13Speaker 2: It's fun to watch.
- 5:14Speaker 3: So enjoy it.
- 5:15Speaker 2: And let's see where they're at later in the year
- 5:16Speaker 2: and US three and when holidays on two, we can
- 5:19Speaker 2: all talk about what they could be doing better and
- 5:22Speaker 2: how they're playing really well and walk along with them
- 5:25Speaker 2: because it's gonna be a fun summer.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I think it's fun to talk about it. You know,
- 5:30Speaker 1: good grand of baseball. But we don't know what's gonna
- 5:33Speaker 1: come down the road, and when I think of things
- 5:36Speaker 1: that could go wrong, you know, it's all about pitching.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You guys are the pitchers, so you would probably back
- 5:43Speaker 1: that up. So I'm looking at the starting rotation and
- 5:46Speaker 1: they've been through the rotation a few times and it's
- 5:49Speaker 1: holding up pretty good. Now. Richard Fitz, the guy who
- 5:52Speaker 1: was going to be like the starter and waiting break
- 5:55Speaker 1: glass in case of emergency because there's always injuries, he's
- 5:58Speaker 1: out for the season yet to have surgery. They have
- 6:01Speaker 1: other guys who they could plug in who are showing
- 6:04Speaker 1: well at the lower levels. But so far, so good
- 6:06Speaker 1: for the starting rotation, don't you think Lance.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it is. You know, it kind of
- 6:13Speaker 4: is what we thought was gonna be. Everyone's kind of
- 6:14Speaker 4: averaging five five innings to start. You'd like for that
- 6:17Speaker 4: to bump up to six. It seems to be like
- 6:20Speaker 4: they're making sure that eighty five pitch mark is the
- 6:22Speaker 4: mark to pull everyone out. So maybe that's their idea
- 6:26Speaker 4: of being able to preserve these guys all season. Is
- 6:29Speaker 4: early in the year, make sure we don't stretch them
- 6:30Speaker 4: an inning or something like that, or pitch count. So
- 6:33Speaker 4: I think it's working as planned. I think the Fits
- 6:36Speaker 4: injury hurts them with depth. I think there are going
- 6:39Speaker 4: to be, you know, multiple starters that will be used
- 6:43Speaker 4: as the course of this year goes on, and it's
- 6:45Speaker 4: going to be interesting how they come in and integrate
- 6:47Speaker 4: into the rotation as they get going here. But like
- 6:51Speaker 4: you said, you got guys that are trying to find
- 6:53Speaker 4: their way. They're monitoring their innings and pitch count with
- 6:58Speaker 4: kind of sticking at five unless they have a really
- 7:00Speaker 4: short outing up in that point, then they get them
- 7:03Speaker 4: through the sixth. So they're not over over stretching anyone.
- 7:06Speaker 4: They're using them the way they need to be used.
- 7:09Speaker 4: The bullpen's starting to find their ways. But I will
- 7:11Speaker 4: say this, as the year goes on, if your starters
- 7:13Speaker 4: only go five, your bullpen is going to get thinner
- 7:16Speaker 4: and thinner because it's good at that those innings start
- 7:19Speaker 4: adding up. So I think I think as May comes
- 7:23Speaker 4: in here, they're gonna start pushing these guys to maybe
- 7:26Speaker 4: another inning, and then that will help the bullpen as
- 7:29Speaker 4: it goes too, and then hopefully everything works out well.
- 7:31Speaker 4: But they're in a spot right now where they're gonna
- 7:33Speaker 4: have to stay healthy with Fits being injured. That hurts
- 7:37Speaker 4: what they were trying to do to monitor some of
- 7:39Speaker 4: these guys in the second half of the year. They
- 7:41Speaker 4: do have some young guys that they are gonna be
- 7:43Speaker 4: able to throw in there as they go on, But
- 7:44Speaker 4: when that starts happening, you know, all hell could break
- 7:47Speaker 4: loose or everything could be great. So that's where we're at.
- 7:50Speaker 4: The old wait and see, they're above five hundred right
- 7:53Speaker 4: now with some you know, timely comebacks and things like that.
- 7:57Speaker 4: They don't have Lars. Lars is gonna put all but
- 8:00Speaker 4: a really good uh spot in left field because that
- 8:03Speaker 4: seems to be one of their weaker spots right now
- 8:04Speaker 4: as the season's gone on. So when Lars gets back,
- 8:07Speaker 4: left field becomes a in my opinion, it comes a
- 8:10Speaker 4: plus position because of what Lars is able to do.
- 8:13Speaker 4: So all in all, things are looking up. They're young,
- 8:16Speaker 4: they're playing with the excitement, they're doing the things that
- 8:19Speaker 4: they need to do. They just gotta stay healthy and
- 8:21Speaker 4: then make sure that the guys that they bring up
- 8:23Speaker 4: they put him in positive situations to get out as
- 8:26Speaker 4: well as they can. I want to say.
- 8:30Speaker 3: At Quinn, let's not forget about Quinn Matthews.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Right, like Quinn Matthews before Richard Pitts came in on
- 8:36Speaker 2: a trade, you know, he was kind of like the
- 8:38Speaker 2: next guy to come up. So Quinn Matthews two out
- 8:40Speaker 2: of three starts has been really good. I just went
- 8:43Speaker 2: five innings and and punched out a lot of guys
- 8:45Speaker 2: in his last starting to run. So he's really only
- 8:47Speaker 2: had one bad start of seven runs. That's kind of
- 8:49Speaker 2: skewed his numbers.
- 8:50Speaker 3: So so out of three has been pretty good for him.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I'm I don't know about all their depth down there,
- 8:54Speaker 2: but you know, the other guy that was a starter that,
- 8:59Speaker 2: you know, I think they're kind of looks like they're
- 9:01Speaker 2: using that swinger rolls Gordon Groceppo. So I mean, I
- 9:03Speaker 2: think he's a guy that if you need a spot start,
- 9:05Speaker 2: you know, he can go out there and get you three,
- 9:07Speaker 2: possibly four, you know, with his starter foundation in his career.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I love Gordon Grocepos as a long guy, and he
- 9:15Speaker 1: seems to be getting better and better as he gets
- 9:18Speaker 1: more comfortable. I did want to say word for Nathan
- 9:20Speaker 1: Church because he's emerging a young guy who has played
- 9:25Speaker 1: some really good defense. Robbed a home run the other day,
- 9:28Speaker 1: was up against the wall last night, was backing up
- 9:30Speaker 1: third base on the throw to third because he's everywhere,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and he's had some big hits at a three hit
- 9:36Speaker 1: game the other day, walk off, sackfly, he's been doing
- 9:39Speaker 1: a lot better. He's something to keep an eye on
- 9:42Speaker 1: in left field because he has for the time being,
- 9:44Speaker 1: solidified that a little bit. But with the rotation in
- 9:48Speaker 1: early season not pushing guys, we saw Libby go six,
- 9:52Speaker 1: May has gone six. It looks like Polonte has has
- 9:56Speaker 1: founded again. Do you think that's as a starting pitcher, Lance,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I know you always wanted to go nine, but do
- 10:04Speaker 1: you think that there's some wisdom in the early part
- 10:07Speaker 1: of the season not letting guys go, even if they're
- 10:10Speaker 1: pitching well. So it's to save something or maybe prevent
- 10:14Speaker 1: them from straining or stressing something.
- 10:17Speaker 4: I think it's a little bit of both. But also
- 10:19Speaker 4: when you have a young rotation, you need to have
- 10:21Speaker 4: those feel good starts. Sometimes when you stretch them, that's
- 10:24Speaker 4: when things could come off the rails. And then you
- 10:26Speaker 4: look at a five innings of one run turns into
- 10:29Speaker 4: five and a third of four runs. So right now
- 10:32Speaker 4: they're not letting them, they're not stretching them. They so
- 10:36Speaker 4: they don't you know, get their feelings hurt, possibly, but
- 10:39Speaker 4: also it saves them because a lot of them haven't
- 10:42Speaker 4: pitched a full year of one hundred and eighty innings
- 10:44Speaker 4: ever in their career. So if you can get all
- 10:47Speaker 4: of these guys who stay healthy all year by doing this,
- 10:51Speaker 4: and then at the end of the year you look
- 10:52Speaker 4: up and everybody's around one hundred and forty to one
- 10:54Speaker 4: hundred and fifty innings, you did really well with this group,
- 10:58Speaker 4: especially if they can stay healthy all day. And then
- 11:00Speaker 4: you add the guys in you need to add in
- 11:02Speaker 4: as the year goes on, when you get into long
- 11:05Speaker 4: stretches of games in the middle of the season, to
- 11:07Speaker 4: give breaks where breaks are needed. So I like the approach.
- 11:11Speaker 4: You know, some teams go six out of the gate
- 11:14Speaker 4: and let guys go. I think the idea of going, hey,
- 11:17Speaker 4: we're going five man, but we're gonna we're gonna kind
- 11:19Speaker 4: of cap it at eighty five pitches. We don't want
- 11:21Speaker 4: to go over ninety. So as a year goes on,
- 11:24Speaker 4: that's kind of where we're at. At the end of
- 11:26Speaker 4: the year, our pitch counts, our innings are not too strenuous.
- 11:30Speaker 4: So then at the end of year, everyone's healthy, and
- 11:32Speaker 4: everybody's finishing. When you have a young group, they have
- 11:35Speaker 4: to finish the season. Kyle and I have talked about this.
- 11:37Speaker 4: If you don't finish September, you've never pitched a full year,
- 11:40Speaker 4: no matter if you threw one hundred and forty innings
- 11:42Speaker 4: in the first you know, how many ever months. If
- 11:45Speaker 4: you do not get through September, you do not know
- 11:47Speaker 4: how to pitch a full season because if you are
- 11:50Speaker 4: what you want to be later in this what they're
- 11:53Speaker 4: building is you got to get through September and then
- 11:55Speaker 4: you got to go into October. So you got to
- 11:57Speaker 4: teach him to get through the year. So hopefully five
- 12:00Speaker 4: innings or eighty five pitches. You know, if they get
- 12:02Speaker 4: through six at ninety, we're in a good spot for
- 12:05Speaker 4: them to finish the year, and everybody's in a good
- 12:07Speaker 4: spot for building what they need to build for the future.
- 12:11Speaker 2: And I think it's important to note here just looking
- 12:13Speaker 2: at some numbers, I mean, there's nine games left in
- 12:17Speaker 2: the month of April the grievous today, So the other
- 12:20Speaker 2: four Stars that have four starts will all end up,
- 12:23Speaker 2: assuming they stay healthy over the next nine games, they'll
- 12:25Speaker 2: all end up with six starts. And they're all trending
- 12:29Speaker 2: to have thirty innings in the first month of the year. Now,
- 12:32Speaker 2: I'm pretty good at math. Thirty times six is one
- 12:35Speaker 2: hundred and eighty. If you have multiple guys one hundred
- 12:38Speaker 2: and eighty starts in today's game, let alone three or
- 12:41Speaker 2: four of them, your starting rotation is covering innings and
- 12:44Speaker 2: doing really well. So even though you know we've been
- 12:48Speaker 2: limiting a little bit, I think these guys are are
- 12:52Speaker 2: doing something to where if they can stay healthy, then
- 12:54Speaker 2: I think it's going to be a pretty good a
- 12:56Speaker 2: pretty good Runnow, granted, if they get six star throws,
- 12:59Speaker 2: I'm not gonna get thirty starts. So maybe they're a
- 13:01Speaker 2: start ahead of where they're going to be. But even
- 13:03Speaker 2: with the early early weeks where they're really getting limited, uh,
- 13:07Speaker 2: you know, haven't had as many blow up starts where
- 13:10Speaker 2: it's you know, seven eight runs and two innings. You know,
- 13:13Speaker 2: they're covering innings and even when they're giving up a
- 13:15Speaker 2: couple here, they're they're doing a pretty good job.
- 13:18Speaker 1: They're battling and if you look at the rotation, Legy
- 13:22Speaker 1: hasn't pitched innings. You know, he's a guy that have
- 13:24Speaker 1: been working out of the bullpen. Mc gravey's hasn't pitched
- 13:28Speaker 1: a ton of innings, certainly at the big league level.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Even Libby is is kind of you know, pushing it
- 13:35Speaker 1: this year because he hasn't done it for an extended
- 13:38Speaker 1: period gathering innings. May has been injury prone in his career.
- 13:44Speaker 1: So a lot of question marks, but no question so far,
- 13:47Speaker 1: so good for the for the Cardinal rotation. I wanted
- 13:50Speaker 1: to ask you about the National League Central because right
- 13:53Speaker 1: now every team is about five hundred. Right now, that's crazy.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Let's what going on with the NL Central? Or is
- 14:03Speaker 1: it again?
- 14:05Speaker 4: Do we know?
- 14:05Speaker 1: If it's real? I'll go with the banner headline.
- 14:08Speaker 4: None of them played each other yet. That's why there's
- 14:11Speaker 4: really I mean, that's where you look at the schedule,
- 14:14Speaker 4: it's like, all right, so we haven't really gotten the
- 14:16Speaker 4: in the in the you know, the the dirtiness of
- 14:19Speaker 4: the Central where teams start, you know, taking two of
- 14:22Speaker 4: three and then one team drops under five hundred and
- 14:24Speaker 4: all that. I think you're seeing a division that are all,
- 14:29Speaker 4: you know, similar in the time. I think the only
- 14:32Speaker 4: team that was you know, truly picked to have a
- 14:34Speaker 4: terrible year with the Cardinals, and we all looked at
- 14:37Speaker 4: their win loss record. I think it was like sixty
- 14:38Speaker 4: two to start the year, was like the win loss
- 14:40Speaker 4: over under, which was just outrageous, Like that team's too talented,
- 14:45Speaker 4: I don't care how young they are to lose one
- 14:47Speaker 4: hundred games. So I think you're looking at it at
- 14:51Speaker 4: a group that's very close more than people thought they
- 14:54Speaker 4: would be, that have never played the game, that put
- 14:57Speaker 4: numbers on things. They thought one or two teams were
- 15:00Speaker 4: going to take over, but a lot of the young
- 15:02Speaker 4: talent all the way through. I think there's a couple
- 15:04Speaker 4: of teams that have digressed a little bit more than
- 15:07Speaker 4: people thought, and some people were or were a little
- 15:10Speaker 4: inflated more than they thought. And then they were just
- 15:13Speaker 4: crushing the Cardinals because oh they traded away these guys guys,
- 15:17Speaker 4: but they opened up the roster to let young talent
- 15:20Speaker 4: go show what it's about. So and then you're seeing
- 15:22Speaker 4: that show up right now too. So I think the
- 15:25Speaker 4: Central is kind of what it is. I think you're
- 15:27Speaker 4: looking at the winner of the Central barely being over
- 15:29Speaker 4: five hundred this year, and I think that's what you're
- 15:32Speaker 4: seeing right now, is which team can be plus five
- 15:35Speaker 4: by the end of the year. That's probably win in
- 15:37Speaker 4: the Central.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And it is true they haven't beaten a crap out
- 15:43Speaker 1: of each other yet in the end because they haven't played,
- 15:46Speaker 1: which is kind of a weird part of the schedule.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Kyle, Yeah, it is.
- 15:51Speaker 2: And I'm looking you know, at those same people that
- 15:55Speaker 2: I'm sure some people at Fangrafts have played baseball Lance,
- 15:57Speaker 2: but looking at these name one, uh well, I don't
- 16:01Speaker 2: know anybody that works for fan Grafts Lance, you know,
- 16:04Speaker 2: I'm sure there's got to be at least.
- 16:06Speaker 4: One high school past high school to be played.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Pass got to be one. Anyway, looking at the update,
- 16:13Speaker 3: I mean, you got to.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Those guys and leave me alone. I like that beat
- 16:17Speaker 1: up on somebody else.
- 16:19Speaker 2: You got the Pirates updated at you know, winning eighty
- 16:22Speaker 2: five games, the Cubs eighty five, the Brewers now at
- 16:24Speaker 2: eighty three, and the Cardinals at seventy eight. I mean,
- 16:28Speaker 2: I think there's real there, there's real validity to not
- 16:32Speaker 2: playing each other. But I think what's what is exciting
- 16:36Speaker 2: for Cardinals fans and the Central fans and and people
- 16:39Speaker 2: that watch baseball here in the Midwest is that I
- 16:42Speaker 2: think when they're playing other divisions, they're playing pretty good baseball,
- 16:46Speaker 2: and I think that means it's a pretty good division
- 16:48Speaker 2: this year, better than people thought. I think you have
- 16:51Speaker 2: some teams that are you know, I don't really know
- 16:53Speaker 2: much about the Reds and how they're set up, but
- 16:56Speaker 2: I think you've got some teams that are built on
- 16:58Speaker 2: pretty good pitching, and I think that offers a lot
- 17:01Speaker 2: of stability and what you do game to game. We've
- 17:03Speaker 2: talked about it here Lance and Jim, is that when
- 17:05Speaker 2: you have good starting pitching in a good bullpen and
- 17:07Speaker 2: you play good defense, that normally shows up pretty consistently,
- 17:12Speaker 2: and defense and preventing runs is a whole lot.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Easier than scoring runs.
- 17:16Speaker 2: The Cardinals and the Reds I think might be the
- 17:20Speaker 2: only teams with a negative run differential look like, and
- 17:22Speaker 2: they're at eight and the other three teams are positive
- 17:26Speaker 2: positive run differential. You know, if that's something we're going
- 17:29Speaker 2: to base consistency and being good on you know, that's
- 17:32Speaker 2: that's a good sign no matter who you're playing. So
- 17:35Speaker 2: I think the division has good pitching and defense, which
- 17:40Speaker 2: makes it fun baseball to play from my standpoint. And yeah,
- 17:44Speaker 2: I think it could be really competitive once these teams
- 17:46Speaker 2: start playing each other.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I love going to comedy shows. Jim Gaffigan is doing
- 17:52Speaker 1: some sort of national tour and I'm gonna have to
- 17:55Speaker 1: get me some tickets and figure out how I'm going
- 17:57Speaker 1: to do that.
- 17:59Speaker 4: And that brings me to a.

- 18:22Speaker 2: couple times a week with Lanson.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I don't know why I got to go to a
- 18:25Speaker 3: comedy show.
- 18:25Speaker 2: But there's a couple of concerts coming to town that
- 18:28Speaker 2: I'd like to see Forrest Franks, one of them come
- 18:31Speaker 2: to Saint Louis.

- 19:00Speaker 1: You guys are veterans. You guys pitch for a lot
- 19:03Speaker 1: of different teams, you know, baseball. So I'll start with
- 19:06Speaker 1: view Lands. What's going on with the Mets. They got
- 19:09Speaker 1: a payroll that high, and they've lost eleven in a row,
- 19:13Speaker 1: and it doesn't look like there's a positive wave of
- 19:16Speaker 1: vibes coming in their direction.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Well, it's weird because I feel like in the offseason
- 19:22Speaker 4: there was a lot of negative vibes too, and they
- 19:25Speaker 4: traded away a few guys, they let a few guys go,
- 19:29Speaker 4: and then it's almost gotten worse. So you know, you
- 19:33Speaker 4: wonder when you pay grown men a lot of money
- 19:40Speaker 4: and then you know, it turns into a pissy match
- 19:44Speaker 4: on who is the big dog. Sometimes it gets where
- 19:47Speaker 4: it's miserable to be around in a clubhouse. I'm not
- 19:50Speaker 4: saying that's what's going on, because I've not been in
- 19:53Speaker 4: that clubhouse, but with the kind of the soap opera
- 19:56Speaker 4: that came out about last year and this and that,
- 19:59Speaker 4: and then what they're doing win loss right wise, right now,
- 20:02Speaker 4: you just never know what the vibes are in there.
- 20:05Speaker 4: You just know that they're not great. Everyone seems defeated
- 20:09Speaker 4: and it seems like it's not fun to be there
- 20:11Speaker 4: right now. So that usually means there's a I don't know,
- 20:15Speaker 4: a rift or or there's something going on in there
- 20:18Speaker 4: that is, uh, you know, hindering the ability to enjoy
- 20:22Speaker 4: playing baseball and winning games.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And they got rid of some of their core guys,
- 20:28Speaker 1: know a Lonzone, Nemo. I don't know. I mean they
- 20:31Speaker 1: have enough talent where they shouldn't be losing eleven straight.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Yeah, Missiver talent a lot.
- 20:42Speaker 1: You ever been in a clubhouse cal where it was
- 20:45Speaker 1: miserable And I'm not talking about the time the season
- 20:48Speaker 1: you spent with Lance.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Uh yeah, of course, Yeah, Yeah, there's uh, there's definitely
- 20:56Speaker 2: times where you get in the clubhouse and just the
- 20:59Speaker 2: personalities are working and.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Yep, some of my favorite stories have come out of
- 21:06Speaker 3: the clouds in those classes.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And so.
- 21:09Speaker 3: You know, it stinks when you're in it. But I
- 21:13Speaker 3: think if you if people.
- 21:16Speaker 2: In that locker room can get together and figure out
- 21:19Speaker 2: how to work with each other. And no, now we're
- 21:22Speaker 2: we're kind of like speculating here right like this is
- 21:25Speaker 2: what's going on. But if this is some of the
- 21:27Speaker 2: issues that the Mets have had, then they can figure
- 21:31Speaker 2: it out and they can they can't move forward to
- 21:34Speaker 2: be a good team. But it definitely hasn't looked pretty,
- 21:37Speaker 2: that's for sure.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Some of the greatest teams in baseball history hated each other.
- 21:43Speaker 1: But we're so like the Yankees. They had teams where
- 21:46Speaker 1: they would fight with each other and then go beat
- 21:49Speaker 1: a team ten to two. We're going to take a
- 21:50Speaker 1: break right here and come back with more. You are
- 21:54Speaker 1: watching Cardinal Territory and the Foul Territory Network.
- 21:58Speaker 5: People, life is expensive, so you should start looking at

- 23:00Speaker 1: Because we're a transparent show and we don't have like
- 23:03Speaker 1: show meetings, I'm gonna throw this out real quick as
- 23:06Speaker 1: we go to our next topic, which is lists. We're
- 23:08Speaker 1: gonna do this a week two weeks ago, and we
- 23:11Speaker 1: never had times and I think it's fun. But I've
- 23:13Speaker 1: been getting some tweets that people want us to answer
- 23:17Speaker 1: questions from the fans if I if I gather them
- 23:21Speaker 1: and put the questions forward to we good with that.
- 23:25Speaker 1: So we'll do that in the future. You guys want
- 23:26Speaker 1: to do that.
- 23:27Speaker 4: That's what we're here for, Jim. We're here for the fans.
- 23:29Speaker 4: We're not here for anything else.
- 23:32Speaker 3: But Jim, is it my question? Yeah, I'm good with it.
- 23:35Speaker 3: My question for you is now that it's X, are
- 23:38Speaker 3: they still are you answering tweets? Or what are you answering?
- 23:43Speaker 1: I lived my life on my own terms. I'm not
- 23:46Speaker 1: calling it X. I call it twitter just wondering because
- 23:48Speaker 1: I started on Twitter when it was Twitter, and I
- 23:52Speaker 1: don't know what else to call a tweet except the posting,
- 23:55Speaker 1: and it should be different, so I call it the tweet.
- 23:59Speaker 3: It sounds a little weird. Answering X right.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Right doesn't make sense? So you know we're gonna use
- 24:07Speaker 1: it and we'll open up the chat line on the
- 24:12Speaker 1: YouTube thing. We'll get some questions and I'm sure Clint
- 24:15Speaker 1: can help us do that because questions, yes, yes, perfect.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I don't know if that's true, but you use that.
- 24:27Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'd like it using leverage, all right, lists, So I'm
- 24:33Speaker 1: going to start with you on this lance and i'll
- 24:35Speaker 1: get Kyle's. Just give me the top three best hitters
- 24:39Speaker 1: you ever faced. Maybe not the best to everyone else,
- 24:42Speaker 1: but the guys that you had the most trouble with
- 24:45Speaker 1: in your eyes, the best against you. U.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Jose Ramirez was a pain in my side. It seems
- 24:55Speaker 4: like you always came up in a situation or always
- 24:57Speaker 4: a problem h I remember early on, Joey Vado and
- 25:04Speaker 4: Jay Bruce were issues, so I clumped them in together
- 25:07Speaker 4: because they were just like the same guy who owned
- 25:09Speaker 4: me early on in my career. There's a couple other ones, shoot,
- 25:17Speaker 4: Salvago Perez give me some fits early on. Yeah, so
- 25:23Speaker 4: that's kind of that's kind of it, you know, Like
- 25:26Speaker 4: was it Starlin Castro use of the short start for
- 25:29Speaker 4: the Cubs back in the day. He just would get
- 25:31Speaker 4: base hits. It was just the most annoying thing ever.
- 25:34Speaker 4: He just made contact. But he had like two hundred
- 25:36Speaker 4: hits a year, so you know. But Jose Ramirez probably
- 25:40Speaker 4: has done the most average and damage to me, Like,
- 25:43Speaker 4: like his ops is probably over one thousand with over
- 25:46Speaker 4: three hundred batting average. So yeah, that was my that
- 25:49Speaker 4: was my biggest problem, I think.
- 25:52Speaker 1: And that's a group that have done some damage. Kyle,
- 25:54Speaker 1: how about you? The best guys against you, best hitters
- 25:57Speaker 1: you face against you?
- 25:59Speaker 2: Yeah, Jose Ramirez is definitely one of them. I always
- 26:04Speaker 2: love going to the list because this is where you
- 26:06Speaker 2: end up finding the names.
- 26:07Speaker 3: That really kind of got you.
- 26:09Speaker 2: One that I really struggled with because he loved the
- 26:12Speaker 2: down in center was Ramon Loriano. It didn't matter how
- 26:16Speaker 2: many times I went away, I never was able to
- 26:19Speaker 2: sneak or or any type of inside here.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Never got buying him. It was always so hard.
- 26:24Speaker 2: So Ramon Loreano, Jose Amirez, Francisco Lindor got me a
- 26:29Speaker 2: lot and I until I started throwing cutters in twenty
- 26:32Speaker 2: twenty one. And then one that has ridiculous numbers is
- 26:38Speaker 2: Jason Kipness.
- 26:40Speaker 3: I think his is.
- 26:41Speaker 2: On basis like over five hundred against me, But really,
- 26:45Speaker 2: anybody that was on the Cleveland Indians while I was
- 26:47Speaker 2: with the Twins owned me.
- 26:50Speaker 3: I don't know why it's weird.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I'm throwing this one out there because I don't know
- 26:55Speaker 1: who you'll answer. But there are some guys who are
- 26:59Speaker 1: scared in Major League Baseball past and present. I'm talking
- 27:04Speaker 1: about and Lance. I'm not saying you're scared of him,
- 27:06Speaker 1: but I'm talking about a guy that you face who
- 27:10Speaker 1: was just a scary dude because you didn't know what
- 27:13Speaker 1: they were gonna do. Scariest guys in Major League Baseball.
- 27:19Speaker 4: So like early on my career when when Cabrera MIGGI
- 27:23Speaker 4: Cabrera was Triple Crown Meggie, that was probably the weirdest
- 27:27Speaker 4: thing ever, because he was hitting three something, he was
- 27:30Speaker 4: hitting home runs, he was driving the ball all over
- 27:33Speaker 4: the park. So he was the guy that I like,
- 27:36Speaker 4: you kind of when I came up, was like, man,
- 27:38Speaker 4: what are you supposed to do this? But all you
- 27:40Speaker 4: ever remember is like what he did to Mariano Rivera
- 27:43Speaker 4: in the playoffs and the things that he would do.
- 27:46Speaker 4: So when you see those things and then you go
- 27:48Speaker 4: pitch against him and then they hit everything you throw,
- 27:50Speaker 4: you're like, this guy, this guy's so good, but he's
- 27:52Speaker 4: gonna be a Hall of Famer. So I think that's
- 27:54Speaker 4: one of the guys that you're just like, it's not
- 27:56Speaker 4: that you're scared of him. You look at him and
- 27:59Speaker 4: you're game planning for I'm with the catcher right and
- 28:01Speaker 4: you're like, man, do you know how to get this
- 28:03Speaker 4: guy out? Because I don't know how to get this
- 28:04Speaker 4: guy out. So that was one of the guys where
- 28:06Speaker 4: you're like, I don't home run, but it hit a
- 28:08Speaker 4: double down the right field line, and if I come
- 28:10Speaker 4: in here, he'll hit a home run down the left
- 28:12Speaker 4: field line, So what do we do? So that was
- 28:15Speaker 4: that was probably one the first guy ever was like
- 28:17Speaker 4: I don't know what to do if someone help, that's
- 28:21Speaker 4: a good one.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Scary, physically imposing, crazy what you got caught?
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I kind of always. I struggled with
- 28:33Speaker 2: Trout also quite a bit. I feel like just because
- 28:35Speaker 2: you liked the low ball, and you know, right he
- 28:39Speaker 2: started his career, I want to say, just you know,
- 28:41Speaker 2: a year or two ahead of me, so he had
- 28:43Speaker 2: really kind of implanted himself as a superstar by the time,
- 28:46Speaker 2: you know, I had made a first full season in
- 28:48Speaker 2: twenty fourteen, and he just I mean, he was just
- 28:52Speaker 2: a guy that you knew that if you you missed
- 28:55Speaker 2: a spot, he could hit it over the fence in
- 28:57Speaker 2: all fields, super fast, was gonna give you some fits
- 29:00Speaker 2: on the base paths and just wasn't all. I mean,
- 29:04Speaker 2: he's a big guy too, So you want to talk
- 29:05Speaker 2: about imposing. Nobody really thinks it might trot being big,
- 29:08Speaker 2: but man, that guy is. He's he's pretty broad and
- 29:11Speaker 2: pretty tall, and he's an ALP.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Lance's least favorite city mm hmm to visit as a player.
- 29:20Speaker 1: At least favorite top three give me three cities for
- 29:24Speaker 1: one reason. Maybe to like the food, the ballpark. I've
- 29:27Speaker 1: had bad experiences there. Hotels haunted, like in Milwaukee.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I don't know. Yeah, but Milwaukee had great golf, so
- 29:36Speaker 4: you know, so you're and I love pitching. I love
- 29:39Speaker 4: pitching there. I don't know why it's a pitchers or
- 29:41Speaker 4: a hitters ballpark, but I really like pitching there. It
- 29:44Speaker 4: just felt good. Worst cities that were not fun, I
- 29:51Speaker 4: will so early on when you like went to uh
- 29:54Speaker 4: and then these are good cities. But the ballparks were
- 29:57Speaker 4: weird early on, like Chicago the back in the day
- 30:00Speaker 4: when you had to duck your head walking down the
- 30:02Speaker 4: hallway just to get to the dugout and stuff like that.
- 30:06Speaker 4: You know, you're just like where were at? But you're
- 30:08Speaker 4: in regularly, so it's cool. So that but that was
- 30:11Speaker 4: kind of a weird experience. I mean, you're sitting there
- 30:13Speaker 4: eating breakfast and you got some guys like ash cheeks
- 30:17Speaker 4: like on the back of your head because there's just
- 30:19Speaker 4: no room to eat or do anything, and you're just like,
- 30:22Speaker 4: what are we doing here? But like you go out
- 30:25Speaker 4: and you're in Wrigley Field, So that was that was
- 30:27Speaker 4: a weird one, right, You're like, what are we doing?
- 30:29Speaker 4: What we're doing? Oh, yeah, we're a Wrigley Field, So
- 30:31Speaker 4: it's kind of cool. Finway was kind of the same,
- 30:33Speaker 4: a lot of the same vibes who were in the
- 30:35Speaker 4: clubhouse and stuff like that. No room for grown men
- 30:37Speaker 4: to move around and and eat and be comfortable. But
- 30:41Speaker 4: then you go out and then you see you see
- 30:42Speaker 4: the Green Monster. You know, both of them are great cities,
- 30:46Speaker 4: great fields to play on, but some of the a
- 30:49Speaker 4: minuities for players were a little different than uh, you
- 30:52Speaker 4: know then than we're used to. So, uh, I don't
- 30:56Speaker 4: love Miami. It's not a fun place to play really,
- 31:01Speaker 4: It's like, you know, it's just kind of kind of crazy.
- 31:04Speaker 4: So I would say that's one of my one of
- 31:06Speaker 4: my ones that is not ideal. I'm trying to think
- 31:11Speaker 4: of another one, because there's something. I mean, there's Oakland
- 31:14Speaker 4: wasn't Oakland wasn't fun, to be honest with you. So
- 31:17Speaker 4: I would say that that would be my that's my list.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Oakland's Oakland's actually up there number one now that I
- 31:23Speaker 4: think about it.
- 31:25Speaker 1: One year when you guys went there, I was there too.
- 31:27Speaker 1: They actually had a leak of raw sewage into the
- 31:30Speaker 1: visitors clubhouse.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Yeah, too much, too much morning poopoo. Too much morning
- 31:35Speaker 4: poopoo would come back up. It was great yeah, it
- 31:37Speaker 4: was great. Guys, come on, it's coming out of the ground. Man,
- 31:42Speaker 4: There's nothing we can do. It's gross.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Really did upgrade the visitors clubhouse, but there's not a
- 31:48Speaker 1: lot to make so it's bigger, but now it's still small.
- 31:52Speaker 1: But it was bad. And then meantime, the home clubhouse
- 31:57Speaker 1: for the Cubs, even back in the day, was like
- 32:00Speaker 1: state of the art.
- 32:01Speaker 4: I mean it was.
- 32:01Speaker 1: It was like it was a museum in there. Everything
- 32:04Speaker 1: was beautiful and the visitors terrible. How about you, Kyle?
- 32:09Speaker 2: I would say I tried to get out and about
- 32:12Speaker 2: in quite a few cities, not only golf but but
- 32:14Speaker 2: other things, and I feel like one city that I
- 32:17Speaker 2: never I don't know, it was weird. I'm not gonna
- 32:21Speaker 2: say I never enjoyed because it's good food. I love
- 32:23Speaker 2: the ballpark, but San Francisco for me, was one that
- 32:26Speaker 2: just kind of stood out and kind of a weird reason.
- 32:29Speaker 2: It just never seemed warm. You never felt comfortable walking
- 32:34Speaker 2: out of the hotel room, like, all right, am I
- 32:37Speaker 2: going out in a sweatshirt today, I'm wearing shorts because
- 32:40Speaker 2: the sun's out, but it's fifty seven.
- 32:43Speaker 3: All right.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Then you get to the ballpark and they're like, oh, wow,
- 32:46Speaker 2: the sun's out. I'm gonna go out and play catching
- 32:48Speaker 2: and shorts and a T shirt.
- 32:50Speaker 3: It's fifty four.
- 32:52Speaker 2: And then oh hey, but guys, by the way, it's
- 32:54Speaker 2: June fifteenth. But we're going to San fran so all
- 32:57Speaker 2: of our cold weather gear is in our travel bag.
- 32:59Speaker 2: And I'm like, guys, it's June fifteenth.
- 33:02Speaker 3: What are we doing.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Oh, we're going to San Francisco. You're gonna need that
- 33:05Speaker 2: heavy coat by a game time at.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Seven oh seven. So just what, I don't know. It
- 33:10Speaker 3: was just one of those things.
- 33:11Speaker 2: That I loved running when I ran earlier in my career.
- 33:15Speaker 2: It was one of my favorite parks because you can
- 33:17Speaker 2: run the concourse and see the harbor and see the marina.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I'm in left center, amazing scenery looking over the bay
- 33:25Speaker 2: as you're getting.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Your post start running.
- 33:26Speaker 2: But man, just I don't know, something about always being
- 33:31Speaker 2: cold and just cloudy. But I don't know, just not
- 33:34Speaker 2: my favorite.
- 33:37Speaker 4: I'll get your money coffee and the guy's taking a
- 33:39Speaker 4: shit on the sidewalk. That didn't make it a feeling either.
- 33:43Speaker 3: I mean, I wasn't gonna do it.
- 33:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it happened.
- 33:47Speaker 1: It happens. I was that one. We're on the bus
- 33:52Speaker 1: because I saw too.
- 33:54Speaker 4: Yeah, it's the same place. Yeah, we're on the bus.
- 33:57Speaker 3: I'm gonna be the same guy.
- 33:58Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 34:00Speaker 1: And it's always colder than you think in San Francisco.
- 34:03Speaker 1: By the way, Daniel Discalso told me that he watches
- 34:07Speaker 1: this and he loves when you curse. So that story
- 34:10Speaker 1: is dedicated to Daniel Discalco. Last thing, I know we're
- 34:13Speaker 1: going a little long, but I'm really your answer. He does,
- 34:17Speaker 1: he's he's from there. Give me the one guy in
- 34:22Speaker 1: baseball smartest baseball mind you ever encountered, just one top
- 34:26Speaker 1: of the list, the smartest baseball mind that you ever
- 34:30Speaker 1: came across in your career. I know you probably want
- 34:33Speaker 1: to put me on there, but pick someone else, Smatt.
- 34:39Speaker 3: I can't wait till you give us a heads up
- 34:41Speaker 3: next time answers and not every.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought put I think I put it on thee.
- 34:50Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure you didn't on the list at all.
- 34:53Speaker 1: All right, then it's a it's a surprise question.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Surprise one smartest baseball guys. Man, there's so many guys
- 35:03Speaker 4: that run in your head right now. There's no one
- 35:07Speaker 4: person that just gave me some knowledge that was like
- 35:11Speaker 4: like made me like better. But there was a lot
- 35:17Speaker 4: of guys who gave me a lot of different tidbits
- 35:20Speaker 4: that I was able to put them all together. So
- 35:22Speaker 4: there's not one guy that like, I mean, I can
- 35:25Speaker 4: tell you stories. Different guys gave me different things to
- 35:29Speaker 4: kind of understand go through process. Like for me personally,
- 35:33Speaker 4: that helped me out the most was Chris Carpenter, and
- 35:36Speaker 4: it was a lot of different things that came up,
- 35:38Speaker 4: but what he taught me, I was able to use
- 35:41Speaker 4: other things that Lows wayn Right, Lackey, Westbrook CC, all
- 35:46Speaker 4: those guys gave me and then I was able to
- 35:48Speaker 4: just keep building on it. So Karp was my foundation
- 35:53Speaker 4: person if that makes sense, and then I was able
- 35:55Speaker 4: to use everyone else. So I'm gonna go with Karp
- 35:58Speaker 4: just because he gave me. He gave me my fa foundation,
- 36:00Speaker 4: and then I would say able to go from there.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Mance Linda's the post boy of the Cardinal Way.
- 36:05Speaker 2: How about you, Kyle, I think for a pitching wise,
- 36:11Speaker 2: if we're just going a guy that could sit down
- 36:14Speaker 2: and have a really intelligent conversation and know kind of
- 36:17Speaker 2: what's going in and why he's doing it. It was
- 36:19Speaker 2: really fascinating to talk to Sonny Gray about pitch grips
- 36:23Speaker 2: and what he was trying to do with the baseball
- 36:24Speaker 2: and what he saw from a hitter that was, and
- 36:28Speaker 2: how he focused on his strengths and worked on his bullpen.
- 36:30Speaker 3: That was a lot of fun. He's a really smart
- 36:32Speaker 3: guy pitching wise, baseball wise.
- 36:35Speaker 2: The two that stand out for me would probably be
- 36:37Speaker 2: Joe Mauer, just one of the guys that you know,
- 36:41Speaker 2: transitioned from catcher to first base flawlessly, and how he
- 36:45Speaker 2: didn't want a gold globe over there I'm not sure,
- 36:48Speaker 2: just knew the positions on the field really well and.
- 36:52Speaker 3: With just a baseball mind really good.
- 36:54Speaker 2: And then a guy that it was really interesting, Brian
- 36:58Speaker 2: Doser with the Twins, Like he almost knew the baseball
- 37:02Speaker 2: rule book and like the the page.
- 37:05Speaker 3: And the number statue the rule was.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Because something would come up and he like walk over
- 37:10Speaker 2: to Trevor Poop and I'd be like, hey, do you
- 37:12Speaker 2: know the official ruling on that right there? Like, uh No,
- 37:15Speaker 2: He's like, well, you know, page whatever, statute this A
- 37:18Speaker 2: B one C says this.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Uh.
- 37:21Speaker 2: But not only did he know the rule book really
- 37:23Speaker 2: well and understand the scenarios. He he just he understood
- 37:26Speaker 2: where to be on the field. Uh and and when
- 37:29Speaker 2: to be there. You know, you talk about Nathan Church
- 37:31Speaker 2: backing up third base, you know that was Brian Doser.
- 37:34Speaker 2: He knew where to be and he played that solid
- 37:37Speaker 2: baseball ball planks.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Paul Nowhere ball players, gentlemen, you were you were great.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I appreciate that. That's going to do it for this
- 37:49Speaker 1: edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you for the next one.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Hopefully that episode won't suck.
