- 0:52Speaker 2: ¶ ¶.
- 1:07Speaker 3: You sure you're calling the right girl, Jameson?
- 1:21Speaker 4: We'll soon find out, Harlow. She ought to answer in
- 1:23Speaker 4: a minute.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Hello?
- 1:27Speaker 4: Are you Marlene Adrian, the actress?
- 1:29Speaker 6: Well, I'd like people to think I'm an actress.
- 1:32Speaker 7: Fine.
- 1:33Speaker 8: I'm going to send you $ 500. What?
- 1:35Speaker 9: That's what I'm going to send you right now. And
- 1:37Speaker 9: I'll send you another $ 500 when you finish a little
- 1:39Speaker 9: job for me.
- 1:41Speaker 4: A job?
- 1:41Speaker 9: It's nothing very difficult. Just find Boston Blackie and tell
- 1:45Speaker 9: him you want him to meet you tonight at 111
- 1:48Speaker 9: Cedar Street. You don't meet him there, of course, but
- 1:50Speaker 9: you tell him that that's where you're going to be killed.
- 1:58Speaker 10: And now meet Dick Calmer as Boston Blackie. Enemy to
- 2:01Speaker 10: those who make him an enemy. Friend to those who
- 2:05Speaker 10: have no friend.
- 2:12Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Inspector Faraday, this little weasel says he wants to talk
- 2:17Speaker 2: to you.
- 2:17Speaker 11: Yeah, Rollins? What about?
- 2:19Speaker 6: I'll tell you myself, Inspector, only I gotta get paid.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I got information.
- 2:23Speaker 11: Yeah, and I got a headache. Come on, stool pigeon, talk.
- 2:26Speaker 4: The door, Inspector, it's drafty in here.
- 2:28Speaker 11: Okay, Rollins, close the door. From the outside.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Sure.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Okay, you.
- 2:33Speaker 2: What do you want to tell me?
- 2:34Speaker 4: Well, what's it worth if I put the finger in
- 2:36Speaker 4: the hold-up gang you're looking for, huh?
- 2:38Speaker 11: You know where they're hiding out?
- 2:39Speaker 4: No, but I know where you can find a blonde
- 2:41Speaker 4: girl who's been driving the getaway car.
- 2:43Speaker 8: Where?
- 2:44Speaker 4: My memory gets all.
- 2:46Speaker 7: Of a sudden bad.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Do I get paid for it?
- 2:50Speaker 11: Come on, come on. Where is she?
- 2:51Speaker 12: You won't tell me you got the dope, will you, Inspector? Look,
- 2:54Speaker 12: I like to forget guys like you as fast as
- 2:55Speaker 12: I can. Now tell me where that blonde is.
- 2:57Speaker 11: Come on, come on. Get out of here.
- 2:59Speaker 6: Sure, sure, sure, Inspector.
- 3:01Speaker 4: She's at 111... Cedar Street.
- 3:14Speaker 8: We got the house surrounded, Inspector Faraday.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Okay, Rollins.
- 3:16Speaker 12: Let's have that microphone. Maybe we can talk that blonde
- 3:18Speaker 12: out of there instead of blast her out.
- 3:20Speaker 8: I hope so. Give it to them good, Inspector, and
- 3:22Speaker 8: the boys will keep their eyes open plenty. Here's the mic.
- 3:26Speaker 10: All right in there.
- 3:28Speaker 11: You and 111 Cedar Street.
- 3:31Speaker 7: Come on up.
- 3:32Speaker 8: I will blow you out. We know you're in there.
- 3:35Speaker 7: You get ten seconds to come out with your hands
- 3:37Speaker 7: up or be carried out.
- 3:39Speaker 11: Feet first. You got ten seconds. That's all.
- 3:45Speaker 2: One.
- 3:46Speaker 8: Two.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Three.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Four.
- 3:51Speaker 8: Five.
- 3:52Speaker 9: Six. Seven.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Eight.
- 3:57Speaker 8: Nine. Inspector, somebody just stepped out the front door.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 4:00Speaker 8: Yeah, but it's a man. Keep your guns ready, boys.
- 4:03Speaker 2: This may be a trick.
- 4:04Speaker 8: What do we do now, Inspector?
- 4:05Speaker 2: Come on.
- 4:05Speaker 8: Let's go get him. He doesn't have his hands up,
- 4:08Speaker 8: and I don't think he's got a gut. Inspector, look
- 4:10Speaker 8: who it is.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Hi, Faraday. Blackie, you.
- 4:13Speaker 11: Faraday, me.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Hey, what are you doing in there? Don't you get
- 4:16Speaker 2: any wrong ideas, Rollins. Leave all that to Faraday. He's
- 4:19Speaker 2: better at it.
- 4:20Speaker 12: Blackie, what are you doing here?
- 4:21Speaker 2: What am I doing here? Not much, Faraday. Just looking
- 4:23Speaker 2: around in this house to see if I can find
- 4:25Speaker 2: out who killed the girl in there.
- 4:27Speaker 11: Killed a girl?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Blonde, Faraday. Lovely, too. Come on, Rollins.
- 4:31Speaker 11: You go in the house and have a look around.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:33Speaker 11: Blackie, you're coming with me.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Where, the headquarters? Look, I'll give you all my answers
- 4:37Speaker 2: right here. A lovely blonde met me in a drugstore
- 4:40Speaker 2: early this evening and told me to meet her here
- 4:42Speaker 2: because she was going to be killed.
- 4:43Speaker 11: So you met her here, and you.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I didn't kill that girl in there, Faraday. She was
- 4:47Speaker 2: dead when I got here. Excuse me a minute.
- 4:50Speaker 11: Hey, hey, where do you think you're going?
- 4:52Speaker 2: Just to this mailbox, Inspector.
- 4:55Speaker 11: Hey, what are you doing?
- 4:57Speaker 2: What do you usually do when you go to a mailbox?
- 5:00Speaker 2: Mail a letter. Any law against it?
- 5:02Speaker 11: There ought to be a law against everything you do.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Well, Rollins.
- 5:06Speaker 11: Inspector Faraday, Blackie wasn't joking.
- 5:08Speaker 2: There is a body in there. It's a girl.
- 5:09Speaker 8: She's been shot.
- 5:10Speaker 11: All right, Blackie. You're coming with me.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yes, I know, Faraday. To headquarters.
- 5:13Speaker 11: To headquarters, nothing. To jail.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I don't know what Faraday wants to see about Blackie.
- 5:28Speaker 2: All he said was to take you out of your
- 5:29Speaker 2: cell and bring you to his offices. So early in
- 5:31Speaker 2: the morning? Oh, they don't even let me sleep late
- 5:35Speaker 2: in jail. Does Faraday get in here this early every day, Rollins? Yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I don't know when he finds time to sleep. When
- 5:42Speaker 2: he's working on a case, that's all he does do.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I'll go in myself, Rollins. Thanks for the escort.
- 5:48Speaker 8: So long, Blackie.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Good morning, Inspector Faraday.
- 5:52Speaker 11: Come in, sit down, and shut up, Blackie.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Okay, I will. And how's this, Inspector?
- 5:57Speaker 11: Oh, great.
- 5:58Speaker 12: Blackie, I kept you in jail last night because I
- 6:00Speaker 12: didn't believe your story about the girl who was supposed
- 6:02Speaker 12: to have called you up to meet her at the
- 6:03Speaker 12: Cedar Street house.
- 6:05Speaker 11: You know who that dead girl was?
- 6:06Speaker 2: No, only that she wasn't the girl who met me
- 6:09Speaker 2: and invited me there.
- 6:09Speaker 4: I know that, too. I'll tell you how in a minute.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Now, look, Blackie.
- 6:14Speaker 12: That dead girl was a dame named Marion Williams. She
- 6:17Speaker 12: was one of a hold-up mob that's been pestering us
- 6:18Speaker 12: for weeks. She's been described a dozen times by victims.
- 6:22Speaker 2: That's probably the reason she was bumped. Reasonable? Well, sure.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Now that I believe your story, it is. Why the
- 6:27Speaker 2: sudden change of mind, Inspector? Next thing you know, you'll
- 6:30Speaker 2: be believing in elves and fairies. Yeah, I know. Now,
- 6:33Speaker 2: wait a minute.
- 6:34Speaker 11: Miss Adrian!
- 6:36Speaker 6: I'm here, Inspector.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Well, the little lady who invited me to a murder
- 6:40Speaker 2: and then forgot to be present. Nice to see you again.
- 6:43Speaker 6: I explained everything to Inspector Faraday, Blackie. I didn't know
- 6:47Speaker 6: what this was all about until I heard about the
- 6:48Speaker 6: murder on the radio.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Well, now that you know what it's all about, tell me.
- 6:52Speaker 6: I don't really know anything. I was paid to meet
- 6:55Speaker 6: you and arrange for you to go to Cedar Street.
- 6:58Speaker 6: They told me it was a joke they were playing
- 6:59Speaker 6: on you.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Some joke. It almost laughed me into a murder rap. Look, lady,
- 7:03Speaker 2: who paid you to develop this great sense of humor?
- 7:06Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 7:07Speaker 6: I never saw the man. He sent me the money
- 7:10Speaker 6: and talked with me on the telephone.
- 7:11Speaker 7: That's all I know.
- 7:12Speaker 2: It isn't much, believe me. But Faraday, you still have
- 7:15Speaker 2: an ace in the hole in this case, you know. Me. You?
- 7:19Speaker 11: You've been in jail since the murder.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Don't remind me. Only a mere jail can't stop me
- 7:23Speaker 2: from working for you, pal. We don't need this young
- 7:26Speaker 2: lady here, do we? You can go, miss.
- 7:29Speaker 6: Thank you very much. Blackie, please believe I meant no harm.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Okay, if it'll make you feel better, I believe. Goodbye.
- 7:35Speaker 6: Bye.
- 7:37Speaker 12: Now, what's this all about, Blackie? What kind of a
- 7:39Speaker 12: lead could you get on the William girls' murder while
- 7:41Speaker 12: you were still in jail? Well, remember that letter I
- 7:43Speaker 12: mailed just before you brought me in here last night?
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, it wasn't only a letter. It was an
- 7:47Speaker 2: envelope with a note and a locket at it. I
- 7:50Speaker 2: sent it to Mary Wesley.
- 7:51Speaker 12: Why?
- 7:51Speaker 2: Because inside that locket was a man's picture, and he
- 7:54Speaker 2: might be the killer. Inspector Faraday?
- 7:57Speaker 11: Yeah, Rollins?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Miss Wesley's here to see Blackie.
- 7:59Speaker 8: Okay, let her in?
- 8:01Speaker 11: Yeah, let her come in.
- 8:02Speaker 7: Okay.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Well, Faraday, here's where I solve your case, sitting right here.
- 8:06Speaker 6: Good morning, Blackie. How are you?
- 8:08Speaker 12: I'm going to be fine, Mary, as soon as you
- 8:10Speaker 12: tell me what you know. Yeah, Miss Wesley, tell us
- 8:12Speaker 12: all Blackie knows, too. I've got a minute to spare.
- 8:15Speaker 6: Blackie, I couldn't find out a thing.
- 8:17Speaker 8: What?
- 8:18Speaker 2: Didn't you get that locket with the picture on it
- 8:19Speaker 2: in the mail?
- 8:20Speaker 6: Yes, darling, I did, and the note telling me to
- 8:22Speaker 6: try to find out who the man was.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Well?
- 8:24Speaker 6: I couldn't. I didn't know where to start.
- 8:28Speaker 11: So you were going to solve this case for me, huh, Blackie?
- 8:32Speaker 6: I'm sorry, darling. That's all right, Mary.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Do you have the locket with you?
- 8:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 7: Here it is.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Thanks. I wonder whose picture this is. If I could
- 8:42Speaker 2: find out, I could probably deliver a murderer, or at
- 8:45Speaker 2: least a suspect to you, Faraday.
- 8:47Speaker 11: Give me that thing.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 8:49Speaker 11: Now get out of here, both of you.
- 8:50Speaker 2: All right. Come on, Mary.
- 8:51Speaker 6: I'm coming.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So long, Inspector, and thanks for the hospitality.
- 8:54Speaker 11: Don't mention it.
- 8:56Speaker 6: You're ashamed of me, aren't you, Blackie?
- 8:58Speaker 2: Not at all, Mary.
- 8:59Speaker 6: But that locket was your only clue. Now the Inspector
- 9:02Speaker 6: has it.
- 9:03Speaker 2: So what? I'm sorry you couldn't locate our man, but
- 9:06Speaker 2: even you can't do the impossible. Come on. Let's go
- 9:10Speaker 2: solve this case.
- 9:11Speaker 6: How can we? We can't possibly find that man in
- 9:14Speaker 6: this city if we don't know anything about him. And
- 9:17Speaker 6: now we don't even have the picture that was in
- 9:18Speaker 6: the locket.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Oh, but we do, Mary. I gave Faraday the locket,
- 9:23Speaker 2: but I kept the picture. Here's the bank, Jameson.
- 9:37Speaker 4: We'll wait here in the car before we go in, Harlow.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Okay. Say, where'd you lift this car?
- 9:42Speaker 4: What do you think? From the boyfriend? Of course.
- 9:45Speaker 12: After what we had to do to our young lady
- 9:47Speaker 12: last night, it was a natural car to steal.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Everything's great, huh? Perfect.
- 9:53Speaker 8: Well, this is it.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Right. Leave the motor running.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Come on.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Got the tear gas?
- 10:01Speaker 4: I never forget anything. Close the car door and come on.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Sure.
- 10:08Speaker 4: Now, stay a little to one side of me as
- 10:10Speaker 4: we go into the bank.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Don't worry. I know what to do.
- 10:12Speaker 7: Good.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Well, here goes.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Here's the cashier we'll talk to. Good afternoon.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Good afternoon.
- 10:27Speaker 13: By the way, cashier, what's your name? It's on the
- 10:29Speaker 13: window plate in front of you. Thompson, Joe Thompson. All right, Joe,
- 10:32Speaker 13: don't do anything we'll be sorry for.
- 10:33Speaker 4: It's a stick-up. I don't touch the floor button.
- 10:35Speaker 11: Don't move. All right, everybody, stand where you are. This
- 10:37Speaker 11: is a hold-up.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Don't move and you won't get hurt.
- 10:40Speaker 11: Quiet, everybody, quiet.
- 10:41Speaker 13: Now, Joe, press the button that opens the gate and
- 10:43Speaker 13: let my friend through the vault. You said not to move.
- 10:44Speaker 13: Press the button that opens the gate or I'll press
- 10:46Speaker 13: this trigger.
- 10:47Speaker 11: All right.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Okay, the gate's open now. Go get the money.
- 10:50Speaker 11: Sure thing. And hurry up.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Joe looks nervous. Don't worry.
- 10:53Speaker 2: This will take only a couple of seconds.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Keep your eyes forward, Joe. It won't do you any
- 10:56Speaker 4: good to watch him take the money. He'll take it anyway.
- 10:58Speaker 11: I know. Hurry it up in there.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Just about finished. Joe!
- 11:01Speaker 4: I said not to move.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I didn't move. Not a finger. All right.
- 11:04Speaker 10: I have the money.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Release the tear gas. Let's get out of here.
- 11:06Speaker 11: Okay.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Get out from behind that gate first.
- 11:10Speaker 2: All set.
- 11:11Speaker 11: Head for the door as soon as I release the gas. Goodbye, Joe.
- 11:14Speaker 11: Thanks for being such a nice boy.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Sure.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Okay.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Hey, that's the alarm.
- 11:20Speaker 11: I know, and this is the guy that turned it on.
- 11:22Speaker 11: Now you made me do something I'm sorry for.
- 11:24Speaker 10: Come on.
- 11:24Speaker 12: Come on.
- 11:25Speaker 11: Hurry up.
- 11:25Speaker 8: Let's get up.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Faster.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Faster. Come on.
- 11:28Speaker 7: Let's go.
- 11:28Speaker 6: Hurry.
- 11:29Speaker 7: Let's get going.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Come on.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Let's get going.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:34Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Did you get a lot of money, Harlow?
- 11:38Speaker 11: Yeah, Jameson. About $ 50, 000.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Good.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Well, we're sitting pretty.
- 11:42Speaker 9: Last night we eliminated the one identifiable member of our organization,
- 11:45Speaker 9: our lady friend. We've just stolen $ 50, 000, we're in the clear,
- 11:49Speaker 9: and the only one with any trouble is Boston Blackie.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Now back to Boston Blackie.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Boston Blackie.
- 12:07Speaker 10: Blackie is told by a girl to meet her at
- 12:10Speaker 10: 111 Cedar Street, for she fears she is going to
- 12:14Speaker 10: be killed. So Blackie goes to that address and finds
- 12:19Speaker 10: a girl there, dead. But it is not the same girl.
- 12:25Speaker 10: At the same time, Faraday gets a tip to go
- 12:27Speaker 10: to 111 Cedar Street and finds Blackie with the body.
- 12:32Speaker 10: Blackie is jailed. but not until after he has mailed
- 12:35Speaker 10: Mary Wesley a locket and picture found on the dead girl.
- 12:39Speaker 10: But Mary can do nothing with the clue. Next morning,
- 12:43Speaker 10: Faraday releases Blackie, and later that afternoon, two unknown hold-up
- 12:48Speaker 10: men rob a bank of $ 50, 000 and kill the bank cashier.
- 12:54Speaker 10: It is now several hours later, and Blackie and Mary
- 12:57Speaker 10: return to 111 Cedar Street in a search for the
- 13:00Speaker 10: girl's killer.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Oh, Blackie, it'll be just our luck that the landlady
- 13:09Speaker 6: isn't here.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Then we'll just have to wait for her, Mary. They
- 13:11Speaker 2: said at her house she was down here to clean
- 13:13Speaker 2: up the place.
- 13:14Speaker 6: You know, if somebody's been killed in my house, I'd
- 13:16Speaker 6: want to close it up, not clean it up.
- 13:18Speaker 2: She is here. Let's hope she can identify the picture.
- 13:20Speaker 8: I know.
- 13:22Speaker 7: Well, what do you want?
- 13:24Speaker 2: You own this house? Yep. We're investigating the death of
- 13:28Speaker 2: the girl who was killed here last night.
- 13:31Speaker 6: I don't know anything about it.
- 13:32Speaker 2: May we come in?
- 13:33Speaker 7: I guess so.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:35Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 13:36Speaker 2: You know anything at all about the dead girl?
- 13:39Speaker 11: No, nothing.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Look at the picture I have here. Ever see this
- 13:43Speaker 2: fellow coming in to see her?
- 13:44Speaker 7: I never saw anybody coming to see her.
- 13:46Speaker 5: I don't live here.
- 13:47Speaker 7: She did.
- 13:48Speaker 2: She also died here. That's what we're investigating.
- 13:51Speaker 7: Go ahead.
- 13:52Speaker 6: What are you stopping at? Well, just a minute. When
- 13:55Speaker 6: this girl took the room, she gave you references, didn't she?
- 13:58Speaker 2: That's a good question, Mary.
- 13:59Speaker 7: I'm a good girl.
- 14:01Speaker 6: Yeah, mm-hmm. She gave references.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Do you remember what they were?
- 14:05Speaker 12: No, no.
- 14:06Speaker 7: But I can look them up.
- 14:07Speaker 2: When?
- 14:09Speaker 4: Now.
- 14:11Speaker 7: Got my rent book with me. This is collection day.
- 14:15Speaker 6: Well, let's see.
- 14:17Speaker 7: Let's see.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Let's hear. Oh.
- 14:22Speaker 5: She gave, uh, three references. The bank, her father, Jim Williams, and, um,
- 14:32Speaker 5: A fellow named Art Harper, a writer.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Never mind the bank. Do you have the addresses of
- 14:37Speaker 2: the other two references?
- 14:39Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 14:39Speaker 5: Her old man lives on a farm out on Route 6.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Guy Harper lives at 29 Oak Lane.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Thanks. Thanks very much. We'll go to see the father, Mary,
- 14:52Speaker 2: and see what we can find out if we find
- 14:54Speaker 2: him in.
- 14:55Speaker 3: The End.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Nice farm you have here, Mr. Williams.
- 15:08Speaker 6: Yes, it's lovely.
- 15:10Speaker 7: Yes, it is, Miss Wesley. I wish my daughter had
- 15:13Speaker 7: thought so.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Yes, I know what you mean. Say, those are nice-looking
- 15:17Speaker 2: cows grazing over there. What kind are they, Jersey?
- 15:21Speaker 7: Yes, but you don't have to spare my feelings, Blackie.
- 15:24Speaker 7: I know you don't want to ask me if there
- 15:26Speaker 7: was any reason my daughter was killed.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Yes, I do. Do you know anyone who might have
- 15:31Speaker 2: killed her?
- 15:33Speaker 7: One of her friends, I suppose. Oh, they were a
- 15:35Speaker 7: bad lot. She was a good girl until she got
- 15:38Speaker 7: mixed up with them, and then she was just as
- 15:40Speaker 7: bad as they were.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Did you know any of them, Mr. Williams?
- 15:43Speaker 7: No, I didn't.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I see. Well, I found this picture in a locket
- 15:47Speaker 2: belonging to your daughter. Do you know whose picture it is?
- 15:51Speaker 7: Let me see. No, I never saw him. I'm sorry
- 15:58Speaker 7: I can't help you out.
- 15:59Speaker 2: I am, too. Well, goodbye. Come on, Mary.
- 16:02Speaker 7: Goodbye, sir, and goodbye, Miss Wesley.
- 16:05Speaker 6: Goodbye, Mr. Williams. Our platter's due.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Let's go out to the car, Mary. That poor man's
- 16:12Speaker 2: pretty broken up about his daughter's death. I don't think
- 16:14Speaker 2: we ought to talk here.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Oh, of course not. Anyway, what's there to talk about?
- 16:20Speaker 2: Not much. We're running down a dead-end street. Wait, I'll
- 16:25Speaker 2: open the door for you. I'll tell you what let's do.
- 16:29Speaker 9: What?
- 16:30Speaker 2: I'll go see Art Harper, that writer who gave the
- 16:33Speaker 2: dead girl a reference. You can call my pal Shorty
- 16:37Speaker 2: and ask him to contact some of the boys he
- 16:38Speaker 2: used to play with before he went straight.
- 16:40Speaker 6: Okay, what did he find out?
- 16:41Speaker 2: Well, we know this much. The dead girl was a
- 16:45Speaker 2: member of the Hold Up Gang, maybe the same gang
- 16:47Speaker 2: that held up the bank this afternoon.
- 16:48Speaker 6: What makes you think so?
- 16:49Speaker 2: The technique was the same, according to the papers. The
- 16:52Speaker 2: job they just pulled was a big one, and the
- 16:54Speaker 2: girl had already been identified from being seen on other jobs.
- 16:58Speaker 2: They may have wanted to get rid of her before
- 17:01Speaker 2: they pulled the big one.
- 17:02Speaker 6: Oh, and Shorty can tell us who they.
- 17:03Speaker 7: Are, maybe.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Maybe, or something about their hideout, say. And that's all
- 17:08Speaker 2: we need to break this case. You call Shorty, will you?
- 17:10Speaker 6: Oh, sure.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Good. Meanwhile, I'll visit Art Harper and see if I
- 17:15Speaker 2: can make a writer talk. THE END.
- 17:30Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 17:30Speaker 2: Inspector Faraday, this is Roland.
- 17:32Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 17:33Speaker 2: The Motor Vehicle Bureau just called.
- 17:34Speaker 11: They checked the license number on that getaway car on
- 17:36Speaker 11: the back holdup?
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah. It belongs to Art Harper, a rider. Address 29
- 17:40Speaker 2: Oak Lane. Good.
- 17:42Speaker 12: I'm going to see him right now. You send out
- 17:44Speaker 12: an alarm to pick up Boston Blackie.
- 17:46Speaker 2: What for this time, Inspector?
- 17:47Speaker 12: He gave me a locket and a picture as evidence.
- 17:50Speaker 12: Only he, uh, accidentally didn't give me the picture. I
- 17:53Speaker 12: want that big galoot for a little larceny.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Yes? Art Hopper? Yes? I'm Boston Blackie. May I come in? Sure. Thanks.
- 18:15Speaker 2: You're a writer, Mr.
- 18:16Speaker 8: Hopper? Yes.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Something I can do for you? Yes, if you will.
- 18:20Speaker 2: I'm looking for the fellow in this picture. I think
- 18:23Speaker 2: he might be... Hey! You're the fellow in this picture. Yes,
- 18:27Speaker 2: I am. Where did you get that? Off a dead body.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Dead body? You mean Marion's?
- 18:34Speaker 2: Yes, Marion Williams. You knew she was dead?
- 18:37Speaker 4: Yes, I read about it. She ran around in bad company.
- 18:40Speaker 4: That's why we broke up.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Before you broke up, did you see anyone with her
- 18:44Speaker 2: at 111 Cedar Street? No. When I was going with her,
- 18:48Speaker 2: she was living with a father out in the country.
- 18:50Speaker 8: Wonderful old fellow.
- 18:52Speaker 2: He was all broken up when she left the farm. Oh,
- 18:54Speaker 2: I see. Then you... Excuse me. You expecting company?
- 18:58Speaker 8: No.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Are you? No, but I'll tell you the one person
- 19:01Speaker 2: that isn't. Inspector Faraday. I kept your picture so I'd
- 19:05Speaker 2: get to you, and he couldn't.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Oh, I see.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Come in.
- 19:09Speaker 11: I'd like to see... Blackie!
- 19:11Speaker 2: Faraday!
- 19:12Speaker 12: Well, I never thought I'd see you here. Blackie, I
- 19:14Speaker 12: don't know how you got here ahead of me, and
- 19:15Speaker 12: I don't care. All I want you to do is
- 19:18Speaker 12: keep quiet. Faraday, you're either smarter than I think or luckier.
- 19:21Speaker 12: I had this fellow Harper's picture, and I practically broke
- 19:24Speaker 12: my neck to find him, and you walk in. This
- 19:26Speaker 12: is the guy whose picture was in Marion Williams' locket? Well, then, Harper,
- 19:30Speaker 12: I'm arresting you for the murder of a bank cashier
- 19:32Speaker 12: in that.
- 19:32Speaker 11: Holdup this afternoon.
- 19:33Speaker 4: That's preposterous.
- 19:34Speaker 11: Sure, sure, I know. I also know it was your
- 19:37Speaker 11: car that was used in the getaway. All right.
- 19:41Speaker 13: Certainly my picture was in Marion's locket. Why shouldn't it be?
- 19:44Speaker 13: Nice to go with her. And my car might have
- 19:47Speaker 13: been used in a bank holdup.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I report... it stolen yesterday.
- 19:51Speaker 11: Oh, you did. How nice and convenient. That's an old gag, Hopper.
- 19:55Speaker 11: I've got this whole thing figured.
- 19:58Speaker 12: You knocked off the blonde who used to drive you
- 19:59Speaker 12: on stick-ups. You forgot your picture was in her locket
- 20:02Speaker 12: and reported your car stolen.
- 20:03Speaker 2: As an alibi.
- 20:04Speaker 11: But I tell you, I.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Faraday, even you ought to see that Hop is being framed.
- 20:08Speaker 11: Framed?
- 20:09Speaker 2: How? That gang stole Hopper's car, knowing he would also
- 20:12Speaker 2: be blamed for killing the girl when we found out
- 20:15Speaker 2: the two of them used to go together. First, they
- 20:17Speaker 2: framed me by having some blonde give me a wacky story,
- 20:20Speaker 2: and just in case that didn't work, they fixed one
- 20:22Speaker 2: against Hopper, too.
- 20:23Speaker 12: Well, maybe so. But I'm holding him just the same.
- 20:26Speaker 11: Come on, Hopper.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Sure.
- 20:28Speaker 4: I have nothing to lose.
- 20:29Speaker 2: No, you don't, Hopper, but I do. I've got to
- 20:32Speaker 2: lose you, Faraday.
- 20:33Speaker 11: Wacky, put away that gun.
- 20:34Speaker 9: Oh, no.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I heard your police alarm for me on my car radio.
- 20:38Speaker 2: I've got to get away to make sure a couple
- 20:40Speaker 2: of killers don't. Don't bother about making coffee, Mary. Just
- 20:54Speaker 2: sit down here and tell me about your talk with Shorty.
- 20:56Speaker 6: It was no good. Blackie, he tried, but he couldn't
- 21:00Speaker 6: find out anything.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Oh, fine, fine. That means it's impossible to locate him.
- 21:05Speaker 6: What did you find out?
- 21:06Speaker 2: That Art Harper is the man in the picture, but
- 21:08Speaker 2: he wasn't any help either.
- 21:09Speaker 6: Golly, we are doing so well, aren't we?
- 21:11Speaker 2: No, not very. What's making it so tough is that
- 21:14Speaker 2: nobody has ever seen any of the dead girl's friends.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Even Mr. Williams never saw his daughter's best friend.
- 21:20Speaker 6: You mean Art Harper?
- 21:21Speaker 2: Yeah. And Harper hadn't seen any of Marion's other friends either.
- 21:26Speaker 2: The only person he ever saw was Mr. Hey, wait
- 21:29Speaker 2: a minute. Mr. Williams said he never saw Harper, but
- 21:31Speaker 2: Harper claims he's seen Mr. Williams.
- 21:34Speaker 6: Oh, Blackie, how can that be?
- 21:35Speaker 2: It can't, unless either Williams or Harper is lying. Mary,
- 21:40Speaker 2: I think if we find out some simple thing, we'll
- 21:42Speaker 2: know where to look for Marion's murderers.
- 21:44Speaker 6: You mean just one simple thing?
- 21:45Speaker 8: Yes.
- 21:46Speaker 2: First of all, that farmhouse would make a swell hideout, right?
- 21:49Speaker 6: Of course. But what is the simple thing?
- 21:52Speaker 2: Second, it's possible that whoever killed Marion also killed her
- 21:55Speaker 2: dad and that we talked to one of the gang
- 21:57Speaker 2: and not to her father.
- 21:58Speaker 6: Certainly that's possible, but I still.
- 22:00Speaker 2: You still don't know what the simple thing is, huh?
- 22:02Speaker 7: No.
- 22:04Speaker 6: Except that I'm beginning to feel like... Well, look, Mary.
- 22:07Speaker 2: When I asked the man we thought was Marion's dad
- 22:10Speaker 2: if his cows were jerseys, he said yes, remember?
- 22:12Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I was just making conversation, and I don't know one
- 22:16Speaker 2: cow from another.
- 22:17Speaker 6: Is there a difference?
- 22:19Speaker 2: There always has been. Now, listen. Supposing those cows weren't
- 22:23Speaker 2: jerseys at all, but Guernseys or Holsteins or something. Then
- 22:26Speaker 2: we'd know the man we talked to wasn't a farmer, right?
- 22:29Speaker 9: Right.
- 22:30Speaker 6: And Marion's dad was a farmer.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Come on over to this bookcase with me. I've got
- 22:34Speaker 2: an encyclopedia over here somewhere.
- 22:36Speaker 6: Oh, of course. I remember the one you won in
- 22:38Speaker 6: the radio contest. It's here on the bottom shelf.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Good use for it.
- 22:43Speaker 6: I'll get it. Here you are.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Now, we'll look at cows. Let's see.
- 22:49Speaker 8: Let's see.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Here we are, C's. Colleges, schools, commissaries. Here we are. Cows.
- 22:56Speaker 6: What does it say about them?
- 22:58Speaker 2: It lists about ten types. Jersey's the one I'm interested in.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Here we are. Jersey cows. Always brown. Never any other color.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Although it is possible that white markings ought to be found.
- 23:11Speaker 6: Blackie Farmer Williams cows were black with white spots.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Well, look up here, Mary. Under Holsteins. Holsteins are always white.
- 23:20Speaker 2: with black patches. Well, the man we spoke to said
- 23:24Speaker 2: his cows were jerseys when they were Holsteins.
- 23:27Speaker 6: Blackie, you know what? We never saw Farmer Williams. We
- 23:31Speaker 6: were talking to an imposter.
- 23:33Speaker 2: We were talking to a murderer, Mary. I never knew it.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Only I'm going to be talking to him again very
- 23:39Speaker 2: soon and show him how a cow convinced me he
- 23:42Speaker 2: was a dumb ox.
- 23:43Speaker 8: The End.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Now, Mr. Williams, do you mind if I don't call
- 23:58Speaker 2: you Mr. Williams?
- 23:59Speaker 7: Well, Blackie, I don't understand.
- 24:03Speaker 2: You understand about guns, don't you? Enough to know that
- 24:06Speaker 2: this is one? Oh.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Well, that's how it is.
- 24:09Speaker 2: I don't know your name, but I know who you are.
- 24:12Speaker 2: You killed Marion Williams and probably your father, too. You
- 24:15Speaker 2: robbed that bank and killed a cashier. But I don't
- 24:18Speaker 2: think you did it alone.
- 24:18Speaker 7: No?
- 24:18Speaker 2: No. I know you didn't rob the bank alone. Witnesses
- 24:23Speaker 2: say you had a partner. Now, where is he?
- 24:25Speaker 4: Right behind you, Blackie.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and with a gun in your back. Drop yours, Blackie.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Thanks, Harlow.
- 24:32Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 24:33Speaker 9: Sorry, Blackie, but we'll have to kill you like we
- 24:36Speaker 9: did old man Williams. You don't leave us any alternative.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Give me time and I could think of a dozen.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Only I don't think you're going to kill me. Not
- 24:45Speaker 2: with a house surrounded by police.
- 24:46Speaker 4: I won't fall for that old one, Blackie.
- 24:49Speaker 2: You don't think I was crazy enough to come out
- 24:51Speaker 2: here alone, do you?
- 24:52Speaker 4: You're Boston Blackie. It wouldn't surprise me.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Now, look, you.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Stay where you are, Blackie.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Don't worry.
- 24:57Speaker 4: And, Harlow, stay behind Blackie with that gun.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Sure. I'm right behind him, Jameson.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Good, Harlow.
- 25:02Speaker 11: Because I'm right behind you.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Cut your gun.
- 25:04Speaker 12: Faraday, did you have to wait so long? I wanted
- 25:06Speaker 12: to make sure you had the right guys before I
- 25:08Speaker 12: came in. But I heard enough. Take him away, boys.
- 25:11Speaker 11: Wait a minute now.
- 25:12Speaker 7: Take your hands off of me.
- 25:15Speaker 12: Well, Blackie, you sure needed me this time. I really
- 25:18Speaker 12: played Santa Claus for you.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Santa Claus, huh? Well, Faraday, I will say you got
- 25:24Speaker 2: here in the nick of time.
- 26:32Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Boston Blackie has brought us Murder on Cedar Street. Good night,
- 27:04Speaker 1: and thank you for spending this radio hour with us.
