Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / GOP PANIC! Insider calls Trump 'election KRYPTONITE' as fuel prices soar & approval hits new low
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Donald Trump's attack on the press is part of his
- 0:02Speaker 1: larger inability to solve problems of his own making. Republican
- 0:06Speaker 1: candidates are running away from him like he's, quote, kryptonite.
- 0:09Speaker 1: One strategist telling Politico, quote, they know how to read
- 0:13Speaker 1: the polls. Trump is getting openly mocked by major power
- 0:16Speaker 1: players within the GOP, including Karl Rove.
- 0:21Speaker 2: He called you and I am quoting a stone cold loser.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Because you have announced that you will be backing it. So,
- 0:28Speaker 2: so terrible. Total loser. He's a total loser. Nobody's ever
- 0:36Speaker 2: seen anything like this. Hey, sir, total.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Stone cold loser. Diesel is hitting record highs, $ 6. 50 per gallon,
- 0:49Speaker 1: which will also drive up prices for all sorts of
- 0:51Speaker 1: other items. And Trump is responding to all this in
- 0:54Speaker 1: ways that range from disturbing to cartoonish. Posting about Iran, quote,
- 1:03Speaker 1: And separately saying that he wants to put drones, snipers
- 1:06Speaker 1: and ammunition inside the arch that he's trying to build
- 1:09Speaker 1: at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. Why would you
- 1:12Speaker 1: need or want that sort of thing in downtown D.C.,
- 1:16Speaker 1: minutes from the Pentagon? Well, it's not clear, but it
- 1:20Speaker 1: starts to evoke the cartoonish supervillainy from an Austin Powers movie.
- 1:27Speaker 3: You know, I have one simple request, and that is
- 1:31Speaker 3: to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Can you remind me what I pay you people for?
- 1:38Speaker 3: Honestly, throw me a bone here.
- 1:41Speaker 2: What do we have? Seabass. Right. They are mutated, Seabass. Really?
- 1:54Speaker 2: Are they ill-tempered? Absolutely. That's a start.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And joining me now is Christina Greer, political science professor
- 2:03Speaker 1: at Fordham University.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Christina, it's good to see you.
- 2:07Speaker 1: You know, I guess I'll start with, is it a
- 2:09Speaker 1: coincidence that precisely as the losses just keep piling up
- 2:14Speaker 1: for this president, the ideas are getting weirder and weirder
- 2:18Speaker 1: and more dangerous?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Antonia, I would say more dangerous indeed. You know,
- 2:23Speaker 2: we know that the president is losing on so many fronts.
- 2:26Speaker 2: He's losing in Iran. Our European allies are not following
- 2:31Speaker 2: us into this ill-thought-out and nondescript endeavor. We know that
- 2:37Speaker 2: the region is destabilized. As you mentioned, diesel prices are
- 2:40Speaker 2: going up. And for a lot of Americans who sort
- 2:43Speaker 2: of say, oh, I don't like the news. It's too negative.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I don't really pay attention to what's going on in Washington, D.C.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It doesn't really affect me. All of the products that
- 2:51Speaker 2: we use on a daily basis are brought to us
- 2:54Speaker 2: by diesel trucks. So, you know, it's not just gas
- 2:57Speaker 2: in your own tank. It's how we actually get our
- 2:59Speaker 2: goods and services. And this is why things at the
- 3:01Speaker 2: grocery store are more expensive across the nation. And so
- 3:05Speaker 2: many Americans, even upper middle class Americans are feeling the
- 3:10Speaker 2: squeeze and not just sort of the working poor. And
- 3:13Speaker 2: so it's affecting so many folks who were sitting on
- 3:16Speaker 2: the sidelines. And I think, Antonio, we have to make
- 3:18Speaker 2: a clear line between not just Donald Trump's erratic policies,
- 3:23Speaker 2: but his attempts to decrease or possibly eliminate so many
- 3:27Speaker 2: people from voting on November 3rd because he knows that
- 3:30Speaker 2: Democrats are going to come out in droves. He knows
- 3:32Speaker 2: that independents are going to vote for Democratic candidates. And
- 3:35Speaker 2: now we're even seeing Republicans saying that they're going to
- 3:37Speaker 2: vote for the Democratic candidates. So he needs to make
- 3:39Speaker 2: sure that he limits people's ability to actually participate in
- 3:43Speaker 2: their democracy because he knows that his policies can't do it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You know, interestingly, I had a conversation yesterday with Senator
- 3:50Speaker 1: Mark Kelly about some of this. And shortly before the conversation,
- 3:54Speaker 1: Trump had posted this whole plan for snipers and ammunition
- 3:57Speaker 1: in the arch. And when I asked the senator about it,
- 4:00Speaker 1: he kind of made he was connecting similar dots.
- 4:03Speaker 2: You know, there's the ban on the free press.
- 4:05Speaker 1: There's this sort of strange announcement to want to have
- 4:08Speaker 1: all these stockpiles right in front of Arlington Cemetery. And
- 4:13Speaker 1: then he was questioning sort of like as he feels
- 4:15Speaker 1: like he's under pressure, you know, is some of this
- 4:18Speaker 1: also about the possibility of like, you know, some kind
- 4:22Speaker 1: of effort to dissuade people from coming out and protesting
- 4:25Speaker 1: him as they had just days prior at the Kennedy Center.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And so I guess when you take all of these
- 4:31Speaker 1: things that are happening at the same time in concert halls,
- 4:35Speaker 1: Does it make you concerned if he's if he's this
- 4:38Speaker 1: nervous about just the polls and the prospect of losing?
- 4:42Speaker 1: Does it make you concerned about what he might do
- 4:45Speaker 1: when he actually loses, when his party actually loses in
- 4:48Speaker 1: a couple of weeks?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah. And Tony, I've been concerned, you know, because we
- 4:52Speaker 2: have to remember, it's not just Donald Trump. It's so
- 4:54Speaker 2: many people within his administration who are catering to his
- 4:58Speaker 2: sycophantic whims. You know, we're seeing a man who's becoming
- 5:01Speaker 2: increasingly more erratic because he's backed himself into a corner.
- 5:05Speaker 2: He's a political arsonist. He's used to setting a fire
- 5:08Speaker 2: and then putting out the fire, being the victim and
- 5:10Speaker 2: the hero simultaneously and saying, look, I put out this
- 5:13Speaker 2: great grand fire. I'm so wonderful. But this time he
- 5:16Speaker 2: set quite a few fires and he's lost control of
- 5:19Speaker 2: so many items in D.C. and abroad. And so. As
- 5:23Speaker 2: he gets more and more nervous, you see these attacks.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I don't want people saying bad things. They're lies. They're
- 5:28Speaker 2: clearly not lies. We've got two eyes and we can read,
- 5:31Speaker 2: we can see for ourselves what is happening, not just
- 5:33Speaker 2: in this country, but abroad. And so my issue isn't
- 5:36Speaker 2: just with the president. It's with the people in his
- 5:39Speaker 2: administration who know better. Some of these individuals have worked
- 5:42Speaker 2: for several presidents. It's secretaries of state and elected officials
- 5:47Speaker 2: in the Republican Party across the country who were saying,
- 5:50Speaker 2: you know, running for office saying, I want to be
- 5:52Speaker 2: Donald Trump's lawyer. You know, if I'm elected to attorney general,
- 5:55Speaker 2: I'm thinking about Tanya Miller's opponent in Georgia. You know,
- 5:58Speaker 2: she's the Democratic candidate running. And, you know, her opponent
- 6:01Speaker 2: is essentially saying, I should be the AG because I
- 6:04Speaker 2: want Donald Trump to have whatever he needs in Georgia.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And we remember Georgia is the place where Donald Trump
- 6:10Speaker 2: demanded his 11,700 votes. So it's not just about the president.
- 6:14Speaker 2: It's about these people who aid and abet this really illegal, dangerous,
- 6:18Speaker 2: anti-constitutional— behavior. And far too many Americans are complicit in
- 6:24Speaker 2: helping him sort of erode the Civil Rights Act, the
- 6:26Speaker 2: Voting Rights Act, the Immigration Act, and so many principles
- 6:29Speaker 2: and norms that we have in this nation.
