- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the Midweek Motivation Podcast for Wednesday, November the 4th, here at DeSoto Hills Baptist Church.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: I'm Mark Lewis sitting here with Hunter Smith for his first podcast.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: First time caller, longtime fan.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: We hope this programming can encourage folks throughout DeSoto County and beyond.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Be sure to subscribe and share our link on social media.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: I apologize now for my voice.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: As you can tell, I've had the crud and it doesn't sound great.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And I have just had a lot of candy because it's Halloween.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Yes, it is.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: We've been off the past couple of weeks.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: We had fall break, and then I was actually at a conference in Dallas last week, which was amazing.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: So uh it's been fantastic.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Fly or drive.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Do what?
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Fly or drive.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: I flew.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Ooh, Southwest.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: American Airlines.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Is it Delta?
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: American it was American Airlines.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Get your mouth in the mic.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: It was American Airlines, and I have a lot of strong feelings about American Airlines.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: I don't want to offend anybody, but uh I would much rather prefer Southwest over American Airlines.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: My strong feeling about Southwest is the last time I was on a Southwest flight, uh I wanted my traditional bag of peanuts, and they've swapped them out for like gluten-free pretzels.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: I don't choose an airline for the snacks on board.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: I want them to board me when they say they're gonna board me and get me to where I'm supposed to be when I'm supposed to be there.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I'm typically like C-class boarding, which is kind of like being picked last in gym class.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: It's I don't pay for the priority boarding either.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: But American Airlines has this real bad problem of, hey, your flight's been delayed 15 minutes.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: When in reality, it's more like three hours, but every 15 minutes they'll say it's another 15 minutes.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: And Southwest, for whatever reason, every time I've flown, knock on some wood right now.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: If if my flight leaves at 9, I leave at 9.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure this is this is like plywood.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, it's not particle board the most.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I don't think we have anything to knock on in today.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: That door, maybe.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that door is pretty solid, actually.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's talk about the calendar real quick.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: We have a lot of stuff coming up here in at DeSoto Hills in November.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: The holiday season has officially begun.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Today is the fourth.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Uh TNT are still on their trip.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Did they go to Branson?
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: That sounds like a thing I've heard in the office if I were paying attention.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: You're listening to two guys on a podcast who have absolutely no clue where TNT went.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: I do know that their bus.
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: If you're in Branson right now, like and subscribe.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: I know their bus showed up uh on the parking lot Sunday morning, and the bus driver was apparently doing a test, a test run.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: I'm not exactly sure what that is, but I'm just now realizing that's why all these cars are in the parking lot.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: All these early voters out here good for them.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Like all right.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: The stars are aligning.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: So we are going to wish TNT safe travels as they make their way back home, I believe, this Friday.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: And then we have um the Thankful Together Dinner, which is going to be 6 p.m.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: this coming Monday, the ninth.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: That is a really, really big deal.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: I would love to tell you that you could still sign up for that.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: I'm sure you probably can.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: Go to our website, DeSodahills.com, because I'm as I'm staring at Hunter right here, we neither one have a clue on that one.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: I think that's the women's ministry.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: And I wasn't invited.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Well, yes.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I felt like the little red hen, like, you know, I built the I built the sign-up sheet for them.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And like just a pie just a piece of pie is, you know, a roll, a deviled egg, maybe.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Just a little a little something.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Just a snack, you know.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: And I know that there's going to be some youth singing at that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: It's good.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: They've got they've been working on the programming for the last month.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: It's going to be great.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: So be sure to check that out.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Uh we then have a night of worship coming up on the 15th of November.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: That is always Sunday nights.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: We're going to have budget uh meetings, uh, our budget meeting with that.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Um uh cookies.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: And always cookies, man.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Always cookies on Sunday nights.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, we don't want to say that that's the reason to come on a sunny night for worship, but it is a added bonus for sure.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, Mark Lewis band is there.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Yes, Mark Lewis band.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Come for the Mark Lewis band, stay for the cookies and also vote early and often.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: And uh I've actually got to get Katie in here for an a podcast I haven't asked her yet.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: So, Katie, if you're listening, be expecting a call.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: We could call right now.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: That would be that would be funny.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: I actually have the abilities on this computer to do that, but I'm not exactly sure how I've never done it.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, decorating for the holidays is going to start on the 16th of November.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: And uh on the calendar here, it's got a whole six days, seven days for that.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: So I'm not exactly sure what's going on there.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: But Katie Downs does a fantastic job kind of heading that up and be listening for her the next few weeks because I plan on having her on the podcast.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: And that's gonna do it for November.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: We have on the personal note though, okay like uh on how how does the Lewis family feel about decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving?
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: I do not want to hurt your feelings.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: You but I'm about to.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Uh I just took down our uh our Halloween stuff.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: I I do have a like a few little Halloween village houses.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: Our our girls are really into that.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: They they they find all of that really fun.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: And then I light up my entire front yard orange and purple because I went to Disney World and saw them doing all that in their trees, and I'm like, I could do some landscape lighting.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: So nothing scary.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: We have a cute little ghost.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: In fact, it's got a hairbow on it because my wife said that is a female ghost, not a male ghost.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: I'm like, ah, okay.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: So she put a hairbow on it.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: The hairbow differentiates.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: And then we light up the house.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: I took all the the lights down.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Uh Jennifer leaves.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Uh she's she's actually out of town today.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, she is on a trip to New York with the school.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: So I very much plan on pulling a bunch of Christmas stuff down.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: She's gonna fly for sure.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Southwest American Airlines Delta?
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: I have no clue.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: I I honestly I don't even know what day she's coming back, to be frank.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Maybe Friday.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: So anyway, she is she is in New York right now.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, I will be I will start decorating.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: And look, here's why, man.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: Tell me.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: I do not I know people I I get the argument out of me.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: I know I get the argument that we should not pass over Thanksgiving.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: You were talking to somebody, and our our listeners of the podcast know this from past podcasts.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: I do not like Thanksgiving food.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: The holiday is wonderful.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: I eat nothing on the Thanksgiving table.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: I starve.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: That's incredible.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: So so uh Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, and I do a lot, we do a lot of decorating for Christmas.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna line the house with lights.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: I'm going to put out a Christmas village that is huge.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Huge.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: A bunch of different Christmas houses.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: Artificial tree.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Uh because you you can't decorate with a real tree this early and expect it to be living on Christmas Day.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Um all that trouble I don't want for three and a half weeks because I am a big believer in Christmas coming down on the 26th, 27th.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: Because it's depressing for me after Christmas Day to see all the Christmas decorations because it's kind of like going to Disney and coming back home.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: You get the Disney blues.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: I get the Christmas blues really quickly after Christmas.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: If you're gonna put all that hard work into decorating, I want it to be done for a good chunk of time.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Every year we've backed it up a little bit more.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: Used to, we did not dare do it until uh Black Friday.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Then we got to where, like, the week of Thanksgiving we would do it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Then we were like, well, we're gonna do it that week.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: We'll just back it up to the second week of November.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: So it's gone farther and farther and farther back.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: You've been very patient sitting here listening to me tell all of this.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: It's okay.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Now it's your turn.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Uh look.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Um And you said Sunday that you're I didn't like Sunday, and apparently apparently Grant uh Grant's girls came to Bible study last night and they're like, Dad really disagreed with something you said.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: I was like he's allowed to be wrong, but what he was was it that he disagreed with.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: And please let it not be the Bible.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: And it's like he you know, we should we should always decorate.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: I my thing is is just like everything you gotta let it have its have its time in the sun.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I'm with you though, like turkey's not really my go-to protein.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: No, I'm a red meat guy.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: I would, I would, I would venture, like, I think it'd be cool if we could start a petition right now and replace turkey for like ribeye steaks for Thanksgiving's come on.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Prime rib, ribeye filet, you know?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And so Yeah.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I have toys over here.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: But I also I mean my thing uh th Thanksgiving big time like for sides though.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Like that's the I I've been known before to just go through the sides.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Of course, we're in the south, so everything's a casserole, so like you get some like protein throughout the casserole life, but you know I don't eat casserole.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: Why do you you be the way you are?
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: I do not eat any casserole um at all.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: And I'm not even big on rolls.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: Now I like some buttered bread.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: So like we're gonna go to Longhorn tonight, and I'm probably I'll get that bread and slide of that.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: Five o'clock, come on, baby.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, so I'm not I'm not big on roll.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: I'm just I can't think I'm I'm honestly trying to find something on the Thanksgiving table to start going through the foods.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: We'll see if I can I like I like purple hole mashed potatoes.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: I'm not a big potato eat.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Sweet potatoes.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely not.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Uh green bean casserole.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: I'll eat green beans, but I won't eat it if it's in casserole.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Um I like I like purple whole peas.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: I like turnip greens.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: I like cornbread.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: So I'm more of a country, you know what I mean.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: I feel you, I feel you.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: My parents, uh for some un un unknown reason, uh have always made oyster casserole for me.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Never even heard of that.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Um and there's a good reason because it's not good.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: It's it it's it's seared into my brain every Thanksgiving that we have to endure because quote unquote everybody loves it.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: And and I I guess everybody is just like my mom, my dad, the dog.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Because I mean, like, I I've never been able to bring myself to it.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: I'll try anything once.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: And I did one year, and that was that was that.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Um like I reflecting, like, we're doing Thanksgiving with my wife's family this year, it's very like traditional.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: There's mashed potatoes, there's a sweet potato casserole, there's creamy.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: My parents, like I realized, like we do some things like I say oyster casserole, we have a cheese pudding is a thing, um, which is pretty good.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: It's just like I mean, if you like cheese, just it's cheese.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: I'm not a big cheese eater.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: What what do you do?
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: My wife, if she listens to this, and she probably won't, um, would be would be like, yeah, he's a picky eater.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Like he's he's not like I don't do fried chicken.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: I'll do chicken strips.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like chicken on a bone.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: But chicken on a bone, uh-uh.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Um red meat.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: It's pretty much red meat.
- 12:06SPEAKER_02: And I'll grill a lot of stuff.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: I love grilling, but okay.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Anyway, all right, we're we're getting lost on this podcast really quickly.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Hey, I wanted to get a little bit of your origin story.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: Now, you are a Kentucky boy.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: That is me.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: You graduated when high school?
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: Uh 2011.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, you were just a baby, man.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, I say that, but we're entering into the years of student ministry where every student we have was born post me graduating high school.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: And, you know, that that owes a chiropractor call, you know, some of those things.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, the the knees hurt.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: The you know it's only gonna get worse, trust me.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Okay, uh what's the origin or give give us a little bit of the story of ministry, how you decided that this was gonna be what you wanted to do, your college choice, like how did all that pan out?
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: You were a football player.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: I was back in the glory days.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, I I mean my dad was a pastor, so you know, grew up kind of like the joke for a while was like it was the mafia and like I had to go into the family business.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh over time just you know get to high school and kind of realize like, okay, this is actually something I kind of feel like called into, but I didn't know what that looked like for a while because I didn't really, you know, got shout out to all the senior pastors in the world that that wasn't really what I wanted to do, but I still wanted to figure out.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And I also like, and you know this, I'm as anti-musical as they come.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: So the idea of being like not not anti, like I'm against it.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm you feel like you don't have musical abilities.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I am pro-music, but I am music deficient.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: My mom, uh, famously one time, I wanted to take piano lessons and she gave up on me.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: You know, that type.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Um and she she hears that, and it's and she has differing, you know, uh revisionist history on that.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: But anyways, um college.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: College, uh yeah, so um was playing football.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Uh I actually got recruited by some uh at the time, like some D2 schools and everything, got hurt my senior year.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Um, and so then you know, through a series of events, like guys still opened up some doors for me to still get to go to that next level.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Um, Campbellsville University was the one that I ended up deciding on because it was uh my grandparents lived in Campbellsville.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Where is that geographically close?
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: Just give us something that's close to.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: So genuinely geographically, it is the geographical center of the state of Kentucky.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: We have a plaque outside the library, it is really important to us.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: They take everybody on the school tour, and it's like this is our selling point.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: This is the center of the state.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, we're the center of the state.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Small class sizes, center of the state.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Crippling student debt.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: But we're the center of the state.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Uh and so uh, you know, did that, uh studied, you know, ministry, Bible studies, stuff like that there.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Uh time for seminary came, and you know, there's a seminary in Kentucky.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: Uh and so I have a lot of well-known seminary.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: The it's like Ohio State, it's like the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: And so a lot of people are like, why don't you just go there?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: It's in your backyard.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And for whatever reason, I just felt like I needed an adventure in life.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And so I packed up everything.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: I had a little Chevy Blazer at the time and drove down to New Orleans.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Uh didn't know a soul down there.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: Culture shock.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: You know, bluegrass of the bayou is a is a is a strange thing, but there were people down there that like thought my accent was exotic, which was which was neat.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Considering.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Considering.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Now I do know like I'll listen back on this podcast, I'll sound like deep fried cornbread.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Like, which I know ironically is a hush puppy, but um, you know, we'll it just just felt like it was uh adventure at that time.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Um met my wife uh through working camp.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Um and what camp?
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: We did we were fuge campers back in the day.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Um The OG.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: The yeah, the the the Mecca of summer, you know.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: New camps.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: I mean it's it's it's a big it's a big outfit.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: But you know, I hate Was it in was it in New Orleans?
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: It was in Jackson uh at Mississippi College, Clinton.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: You know, she was uh she was a she was a Choctaw, she was a she went to Mississippi College before it was a university, right?
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: Um it's still Mississippi College to many of us.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Many, many of us.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Um I actually still have a Mississippi College shirt.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: It's it's vintage now, so if anybody wants to make like eighty, ninety dollar uh offers on that.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: I know what I have.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: I know what I have.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Um but met working camp.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, she fell in love with me and uh left New Orleans.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Uh still finishing online.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Uh we went we were in Water Valley, Mississippi for two years.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Um that was your first that was my first uh full-time um technically my third church.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: I I I worked on staff at a church when I was still in college at Campbellsville.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: And then I went on staff at a church when I was in New Orleans, a little church plant while I was there.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: And then um went to Water Valley.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: We were there for about two years, made a move to Huntsville, Alabama.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: We're there for about six, and then um we got here in May.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Um my wife's from Arlington originally, so you know, closer to her family.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: My kids are currently with Nana and Papa and the cousins right now, so those are those are fun times for us at this time.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: And Huntsville was farther from both families, so is that has it been nice?
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Huntsville Huntsville was mid middle for both of us, so it was has it been nice being close enough for a family to come and pick 'em up.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's been nice.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Now we're going Saturday to drop the kids off with uh Granny and Papa, and they're gonna, you know, do Camp Granny and Papa 2.0.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Um they do.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Y'all typically meet.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Did you tell me you meet in Nashville a lot?
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: How do you normally do that?
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Um and it just kind of d anywhere from like Jackson to Nashville in that span, kind of around Dixon, Tennessee, something like that.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to think it's it's about six hours and fifteen minutes from here to Louisville.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: So what is it from here to your parents' house about?
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: Like five.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: That's about right.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: No.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: No, I mean, like it for you know, they're they are grandkids one and two for my parents, so it is a good thing.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: We are in Tim Buck two down here.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Um, but I mean it's all good.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: Well, uh we have been just elated to have you here, man.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: And you you you got here right when was it vacation Bible schools basically y'all started right at the end of May.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: It it is true.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: Like we started You were thrown straight into the fire.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: It literally like the second day of vacation Bible school.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: I I I watched the Honorable Mark Lewis walk out with a with a you know what, money costume.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: And I I looked at it and I said, Man, like I can already see that next year I'm gonna be like Oh, we'll have to come up with just like a big old raccoon or something like that.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Like his or a junkyard possum or something like that is his is his sidekick and figure.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: All right, we're now going to shift to our devotion portion of the podcast that we call the midweek moment.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: That was a hard pivot.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Um indeed.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: It's all good.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Um, so uh one of the things that I've been doing in my day-to-day life, just kind of my personal study, is um kind of reading through the life of Solomon.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Um I I really like just kind of doing some like character studies, character readings on like Old Testament guests.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Um I feel like a lot of times like we're not always we don't always stay grounded in the Old Testament a whole lot.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Um and there's a there's a lot of things in there.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, not like if if if you pick up the Bible, people tend to want to go towards the New Testament.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: And so do pastors.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and and all that.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: But I mean, like, there's still some really I like I like digging and finding some some cool things.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: So um my my favorite story in the Bible is Old Testament Esther.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: I love the book of Esther.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: I think that's a fantastic story.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Neat.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: Neat.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: But anyway, sorry.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: It's all good.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Um so uh I just dropped this coffee almost.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: It went everywhere.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: You can't see it.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Podcast, the famous visual medium.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: But um so looking through the uh the life of Solomon and like man, uh as far as a guy who like gets started off really well, um, I I think is is is really, really incredible.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, not to go too too far into it, but I mean like there's there's kind of a power struggle um that that starts his reign.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: So he kind of comes in in some like turbulent turmoil situations, some difficult situations.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Um and then his dad passes away, and and I mean that's King David, that's the dude.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Like everybody, you know, everybody loves King David.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: You're never gonna feel those shoes.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Uh uh.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: And so man, like I I think like a a A daunting task ahead for a guy.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: And you know, you you sit here and you look like as he is beginning his reign trying to figure things out.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: God asks him, uh, first Kings chapter three, verse five, says that Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, Ask what I shall give you.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: And and I love this picture that that man, like you you have a blank check from the Lord and you could ask for anything.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: And you know, my mind immediately goes to like physical things, like Absolutely, you know, or human.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like I mean, like God's a genie and you get you get three wishes, but then the last one's you know, three more wishes and and and everything like that.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: And you know, you sit here and think, like, man, I could have anything, what could it possibly be?
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: And he could have very easily said, like, just give me peace in the borders.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, give us like a a booming economy, and like we're seeing we're we're talking this release on Wednesday.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: So like we're we're we're through with midterm elections, you know.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, all that stuff.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Like, like give give us the political things that we need to feel like we're set and we're we're we're satisfied and we're we're you know set for the future and things like that.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: And you know, like Solomon's request, I think, is something like that wouldn't I wouldn't have ever thought of, but it's something that like you just think of this trickle down that is gonna affect everything moving forward, verse six.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: Solomon said, You've shown great and steadfast love to your servant David, my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness and righteousness and uprightness of heart toward you, and you have kept him kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on the throne to this day.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: And now, O Lord God, you have made your servant king in place of David, my father, although I am but a little child.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: I do not know how to go out or come in, and your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted or for multitude.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this, your great people.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, uh as a guy who works with students with with teenagers, like God love them.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Like I I I I I get a front row seat to see some like really, really, really poor decision making.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: And a lot of times, you know, we just laugh about it, and sometimes you gotta intervene.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: But as a younger dude that like, man, uh shows maturity beyond his years and asks, like, y'all just give me wisdom that I might be able to be able to be able to do good, be able to be able to influence, be able to do all these things.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: And and I think like that's one of the things that we see so often is that you know, we not not this like name it and claim it, but like we ask for I think like the tangible things that that are ultimately like honoring and glorifying to the Lord, not just the things that are gonna bring us comfort or bring us, you know, platforms or anything like that, but the things that are genuinely honoring and glorying glorifying to the Lord.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: And then verse 10, and so it pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: Like, like this request for wisdom so that I might be able to know good and evil better.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Like, like it was a was a pleasing aspect, was a pleasing request to the Lord.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: And he he bestows upon him like you know, so much more so.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, we we we learn from like little school, like vacation Bible school stuff like that, Solomon being like the wisest person that's ever ever walked the face of this planet.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: And you know, like that that difference between wisdom and just being intelligent, like I know a lot of intelligent people that are you know dumber than a bag of hammers, but like you know, people that are there are people that like actually have like genuine like wisdom.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: And you know, are uh discernment and you know are able to you know anticipate things like you know what a what a what a glorifying aspect what we can possess is just a greater knowledge of what good and evil actually looks like, a greater knowledge of our decision making, a greater knowledge of how you know our actions and behaviors affect others.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: And then like as you study throughout Solomon's life, he has time and time again where he's he's placed in positions to be able to execute that that wisdom as well.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: And so I think that like for talking to teenagers a lot of times, like man, like don't don't just pursue you know college or things like like like pursue pursue wisdom, pursue wisdom of the Lord to be able to like know what is true in a in an age of chaos and things like that, I think is is so important for for us to hold on to.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: So the challenge, get in the word every day.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: Actually, like you know, spend time and and and and talk to talk to the Lord and everything.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: I I I love like you know, shifting out Old Testament in a New Testament, like you you have that story of like Peter denying Jesus.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, like one of the first things says like Peter Peter like followed at a distance that he was a long way off.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: And like anybody that's married, anybody that's dating, engaged, anything like that, like knows like man, dis distance affects their relationship.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: And you know, if you're long distance, like it's it's a little bit harder sometimes.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: If you're you know really close, you get to know somebody, get to like like that idea of like actually staying close in those things helps you know bring about wisdom, helps being able to know like who they are, how they act, what what their what their on-off switch is, things like that.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: So you know, awesome.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: Well, thank you so much, man.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Thanks for listening.
