- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode eighty eight of Cards
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm Mike Coolard from Asball, joined as always
- 0:23Speaker 1: by my very good friend Jeremy Burr, also from ras Ball.
- 0:27Speaker 1: So what do you think I've I've been reflecting a
- 0:29Speaker 1: little bit on Rob Manfred's comments this week about the
- 0:33Speaker 1: LA Dodgers and the unaffordability of being able to go
- 0:36Speaker 1: to a Dodgers game. He commented on saying there's a
- 0:38Speaker 1: more affordable team in Los Angeles in the Angels, who
- 0:43Speaker 1: I mean aren't even in the same county. We're pretty
- 0:46Speaker 1: much the Angels to Gray's ras Ball podcast, which is
- 0:50Speaker 1: the Dodgers. How does that make you feel? Does that resonate?
- 0:53Speaker 2: I mean think it's very fair. If there's not enough
- 0:57Speaker 2: seats on the bus, who get a cheaper seat? Like
- 1:00Speaker 2: I think there's there's there's different things to see. Yeah,
- 1:04Speaker 2: the go to a Dodger game is ridiculous, But like,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I don't think it's actually as bad as you think.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Like going to game anywhere, it's gonna cost you an
- 1:14Speaker 2: arm and a leg. It's just the choice of where
- 1:16Speaker 2: you sit and where you don't. But hey, it's not
- 1:18Speaker 2: just the Dodgers. That have this kind of dynamic. I mean,
- 1:21Speaker 2: you and I are both Midwest guys, and I've been
- 1:24Speaker 2: known to drive to different stadiums to see my team
- 1:27Speaker 2: because it's cheaper and better seats and things like that.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So yeah, I get it. Dodgers are a huge market.
- 1:33Speaker 2: They don't have like the double the size of the stadium,
- 1:34Speaker 2: so hey, capitalize on it. It's capitalism, that's okay. And yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 2: you can go see good baseball or okay baseball nearby
- 1:44Speaker 2: with the Angels. That's fine. That there's there's like seventeen
- 1:47Speaker 2: teams in California, like just it's fine. It's a small state, right.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you can drive back and forth. O big deal. Well,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm glad that you think that we're the Angels. I
- 1:55Speaker 1: was worried maybe you would throw us in like the
- 1:57Speaker 1: Rancho Cucamonga bucket or something in London Empire.
- 2:01Speaker 2: We are the Independent League summer season college ball do.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Page County Dragons. Yes, Well, we are speaking on April
- 2:13Speaker 1: twenty third. Here it is Wednesday, and it is released
- 2:16Speaker 1: day for twenty twenty five Tops Heritage. And you might
- 2:19Speaker 1: be thinking to yourself, if you've been listening to this podcast,
- 2:22Speaker 1: Hey didn't these two schmucks just cover Tops Heritage. Like
- 2:25Speaker 1: three weeks ago we did that was twenty twenty four
- 2:27Speaker 1: Tops Heritage High Number, which was released extremely late because
- 2:31Speaker 1: of some of those real autos, those real ones autos
- 2:35Speaker 1: that they need to track down for the twenty twenty
- 2:37Speaker 1: four sets. So this is the timing for Heritage to
- 2:41Speaker 1: usually come out. So we're going to cover that in
- 2:43Speaker 1: our main segment on the second half. But like I said,
- 2:46Speaker 1: we're speaking on April twenty third here. If you go
- 2:49Speaker 1: back and just listen to episode eighty seven, we sounded
- 2:53Speaker 1: like the greatest SIUs Sayers I've ever lived because we
- 2:58Speaker 1: went through and discussed some stash minor league players. There
- 3:01Speaker 1: was a ten pack that we did. Four of those
- 3:04Speaker 1: ten since we discussed it last Wednesday, have been called up.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And even a fifth person, edgar Quero, who we originally
- 3:11Speaker 1: had on the rundown to talk about, was called up
- 3:14Speaker 1: like right before we recorded last week. So also, if
- 3:17Speaker 1: you're a minor league out there, you need a call up,
- 3:19Speaker 1: let us know. We'll talk about you on this podcast,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and you're going to be hitting the big leagues in
- 3:23Speaker 1: no time at all.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean, it's like a fifty percent rate here.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I mean, it's we're cheap air time. It's it's it's
- 3:29Speaker 2: not it's not much to get a shout out over here.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. So let's cover the four that we discussed
- 3:36Speaker 1: last week. Like I said, go back to episode eighty
- 3:38Speaker 1: seven and you can go into our show notes look
- 3:41Speaker 1: at the details of the actual kind of news blurbs
- 3:43Speaker 1: that were linking to so you can get more information.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But if you want deeper analysis on these four players,
- 3:50Speaker 1: go back to episode eighty seven. We did deep dive
- 3:52Speaker 1: overviews on each of these players, kind of discussing what
- 3:55Speaker 1: their profiles are and what they can provide in the
- 3:58Speaker 1: fantasy realm. So here's the four that have been called up,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and I just kind of want to check in to
- 4:03Speaker 1: see if you have any additional thoughts since they've come
- 4:06Speaker 1: up in the last week. We've got Nick Kurtz being
- 4:10Speaker 1: called up in Sacramento. We have Luke Keishel being promoted
- 4:15Speaker 1: in Minnesota, Chandler Simpson was called up in Tampa, and
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jace Young also was recalled in Detroit. So all four
- 4:22Speaker 1: of those players in the major leagues and involved on
- 4:26Speaker 1: their teams in various kind of roles. And sizes. What
- 4:31Speaker 1: stands out for you from those four call ups?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean well, I think that you know, we're
- 4:37Speaker 2: early here. Three of the four have played. Kurtz will
- 4:40Speaker 2: be getting his first start tonight. That waitedn't until they
- 4:43Speaker 2: had a writing on the mound. They want to bring
- 4:45Speaker 2: him up for his debut lefty lefty, which I get that.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Hopefully it's not a harkener of things to come, because
- 4:50Speaker 2: we need to see him and every day. But I'm
- 4:54Speaker 2: really excited about what we're seeing, Like specifically with Luke Keishel,
- 4:59Speaker 2: he's looked really, really comfortable in his first few days here.
- 5:04Speaker 2: He's off to the races and he was a guy
- 5:06Speaker 2: that we were I would say Luke warmalon but wondering
- 5:08Speaker 2: how how he was going to adapt to a degree.
- 5:11Speaker 2: And he's that slight power speed combo, you know, good
- 5:14Speaker 2: batting average kind of guy. You know, four games, he's
- 5:17Speaker 2: already stole three bases, He's walked eighteen percent of the time.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Like he just he looks comfortable at the plate. It
- 5:22Speaker 2: is too early, we're talking four games to read into
- 5:24Speaker 2: like batted ball metrics or something like that, but the
- 5:27Speaker 2: fact that he appears comfortable in what he's doing with
- 5:31Speaker 2: the plate I think is a huge, huge thing for him.
- 5:34Speaker 2: And he's also like twice bad than the middle of
- 5:38Speaker 2: the order. Uh, he's bad the different spots he's been
- 5:42Speaker 2: eighth to second, seventh, and third, so he's a little
- 5:45Speaker 2: bit all over the place here, but he's been playing consistently, drawing,
- 5:50Speaker 2: drawing walks, making good the bats, hitting the ball relatively
- 5:53Speaker 2: on the nose as he's been up there. And so
- 5:55Speaker 2: I'm just decided about it because I don't think he
- 5:57Speaker 2: has the same notoriety and probably the other three. But
- 6:00Speaker 2: if you were forcing me to rank them, which I
- 6:02Speaker 2: know you would do, I would probably put Keishel two
- 6:05Speaker 2: of that group. Before for me, of who I want
- 6:08Speaker 2: to own, I'm willing to make me maybe say, hey,
- 6:10Speaker 2: if I'm talking like a Roto League, maybe Dynasty. I
- 6:13Speaker 2: might make a flip with Chandler Simpson there, just because
- 6:16Speaker 2: of the unbelievable Billy Hamilton is esque potential that you
- 6:21Speaker 2: have in Chandler Simpson. But I'm really excited with what
- 6:24Speaker 2: I'm seeing by Luke Kishel, and I'm really really excited
- 6:27Speaker 2: to watch in it Kurts tonight because I feel like
- 6:29Speaker 2: of everybody He's the guy that I think has the potential,
- 6:32Speaker 2: and I mean just this athletics, Like, man, what happened
- 6:37Speaker 2: all of a sudden. That's one of the most dangerous
- 6:39Speaker 2: lineups in the league and it is fun fun to watch.
- 6:43Speaker 2: So hopefully they're together for more than a year. They
- 6:45Speaker 2: don't have to trade everybody over there. But I don't
- 6:47Speaker 2: know what about you, who what are you most excited
- 6:49Speaker 2: about with these four? Who's the one that you are
- 6:53Speaker 2: most keen excited to see make the make moves here?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll I go a little bit of the sentiment
- 6:59Speaker 1: on Keishael, like if anything, I'm I had always believed
- 7:03Speaker 1: in him, but he just didn't quite invest because I
- 7:05Speaker 1: was trying to tamper down whether or not I was
- 7:08Speaker 1: overly zealous about him. And I think it was just
- 7:11Speaker 1: about right that he's moved up into the heart of
- 7:13Speaker 1: that Minnesota order. It does look like he hits the
- 7:17Speaker 1: ball hard enough to stick, and I really love that profile.
- 7:20Speaker 1: The person who really stands out to me, though, to
- 7:22Speaker 1: answer your question, is Chandler Simpson, mostly because it looks
- 7:26Speaker 1: like they're going to bat them lead off against right
- 7:28Speaker 1: handed pitching and he'll play a little less against lefties,
- 7:32Speaker 1: they'll plat ume in a little bit, but even when
- 7:34Speaker 1: he's hitting ninth there, the speed doesn't sleep. So it's
- 7:38Speaker 1: great to see the Rays have faith in that profile
- 7:42Speaker 1: from Chandler Simpson, and just given especially how much more
- 7:46Speaker 1: progressive the Rays are on the kind of sabermetric scale,
- 7:49Speaker 1: and you know that they're looking at all the stats
- 7:51Speaker 1: in terms of, you know, how he swings the bad
- 7:55Speaker 1: and just knowing that the Rays believe in him being
- 7:58Speaker 1: a viable leadoff hit her in the major leagues is
- 8:02Speaker 1: really huge. I think for that profile that kind of
- 8:05Speaker 1: does settle down some of the doubts that you might
- 8:07Speaker 1: have had about him being able to stick in the majors,
- 8:10Speaker 1: And so that really excites me as well as like,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I mean, the glove is going to play. So I
- 8:15Speaker 1: do think that, like the Rays are invested in Chandler
- 8:19Speaker 1: Simpson for the long run, that even when Johnny lucagain
- 8:21Speaker 1: comes back, you're still going to see quite a bit
- 8:24Speaker 1: of playing time out of Simpson. So I think that's
- 8:27Speaker 1: really stood out for me from those four players.
- 8:30Speaker 2: So Simpson one hundred and thirty nine games left in
- 8:33Speaker 2: the season, how many if he if he is a
- 8:36Speaker 2: if he's starting the rest of the season. How how
- 8:39Speaker 2: many steals can Chandler Simpson rack up?
- 8:43Speaker 1: Well, so he's already up to two and that is
- 8:47Speaker 1: in how many games has it been?
- 8:48Speaker 2: Three games?
- 8:49Speaker 1: Three? Just three? Okay? Eight?
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah, he had eight steals in the miners. That's what
- 8:54Speaker 2: I'm gonna give you a car that.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I mean I'm still I'm gonna put it
- 8:59Speaker 1: at eighty, like I think eighties the fairest, but honestly,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I don't. Maybe you get one or two homers, So
- 9:04Speaker 1: it is it's a balancing act, and especially in a
- 9:07Speaker 1: roto league to try to figure out what the pathway
- 9:10Speaker 1: there is. But we've talked about this that that's also
- 9:13Speaker 1: a crazy trade trip to be owning that, Like it
- 9:15Speaker 1: really does shift that entire category for your leagues, and
- 9:19Speaker 1: especially if you're looking and we play in some leagues
- 9:21Speaker 1: where you get point or you get paid out for
- 9:24Speaker 1: some of the if you win the categories, and Chandler
- 9:27Speaker 1: Simpson could single handley do it.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I you know, I picked him up
- 9:31Speaker 2: in one of our leagues and I'm I'm loving him
- 9:34Speaker 2: in a fifth, sixth outfielder position. Like if I look
- 9:37Speaker 2: through my outfielders, and they've all good matchups. They go.
- 9:41Speaker 2: If there's a matchup i'm not really liking, I put
- 9:42Speaker 2: Simpson in and because I'm just looking to like just
- 9:46Speaker 2: pad those stats a little bit, because it feels like
- 9:47Speaker 2: almost every game he's a steal he can get. And
- 9:50Speaker 2: I'm watching a little bit more of the catcher matchups
- 9:52Speaker 2: things like that, Well, pitchers are slow to the plate
- 9:54Speaker 2: to try to maybe catch that three or four steel games,
- 9:57Speaker 2: you know what's gonna happen. But I he is a
- 10:00Speaker 2: very unique weapon. You just gotta be careful to it
- 10:03Speaker 2: to a degree because he will sink your RPIs your power,
- 10:07Speaker 2: like like nobody's business. But you can afford that when
- 10:11Speaker 2: the guy could literally steal one hundred bases even this season,
- 10:14Speaker 2: Like I don't think it's out of the realm. Last
- 10:16Speaker 2: year he had one hundred and ten games in the
- 10:18Speaker 2: miners and he's stole one hundred and four bases, Like
- 10:21Speaker 2: it's it's not unreasonable, Like I think your eighties are
- 10:25Speaker 2: really really good number. If he has the role to
- 10:28Speaker 2: rest the way, which I don't see why he couldn't.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and he does better back control than Billy Hamilton
- 10:34Speaker 1: ever did. Like you can see it in the strikeout
- 10:36Speaker 1: rate and the walk rates, Like he knows the zone
- 10:38Speaker 1: better than Billy Hamilton ever did. That It's not something
- 10:41Speaker 1: where I think we ever have to really worry about
- 10:44Speaker 1: Simpson having the zone just loaded up on him and
- 10:47Speaker 1: he can't do anything with it. That he is dangerous
- 10:50Speaker 1: enough that he will just kind of poke it out
- 10:52Speaker 1: into the outfield and then you don't want him on
- 10:54Speaker 1: the basis on top of it all. Like, I mean, honestly,
- 10:58Speaker 1: like you almost think that like he could be like
- 11:01Speaker 1: a Luisa Rias type player, where he's a one category
- 11:04Speaker 1: sort of just trick. But if he's hitting lead off,
- 11:08Speaker 1: that's runs. And I guess we haven't also spoken too
- 11:11Speaker 1: much to like it could be a three hundred bat
- 11:14Speaker 1: here because of the speed and being able to beat
- 11:17Speaker 1: out those grinders that if he can provide runs, stolen bases,
- 11:22Speaker 1: batting average requisite RBIs with the zero power, it's not
- 11:27Speaker 1: quite as painful as Hamilton or a Rise then yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I mean, Zip's projections for the rest of the season
- 11:32Speaker 2: have him at ninety three games, stealing forty two bases,
- 11:36Speaker 2: which I think is quite a bit light, but hitting
- 11:38Speaker 2: two ninety two and scoring fifty nine runs like he's
- 11:43Speaker 2: I would say he's gonna be average with runs maybe
- 11:45Speaker 2: slightly above. I think he could be the same in
- 11:48Speaker 2: average and a plus plus plus in steals and so
- 11:52Speaker 2: really you're just it's a minus in power in RBIs.
- 11:56Speaker 2: That's which is a little different than Arias, who is
- 11:59Speaker 2: a minus in the pull of those of those categories.
- 12:02Speaker 2: And so again it's it is a one trick pony
- 12:05Speaker 2: to a degree, so you gotta be careful with it.
- 12:06Speaker 2: But there's very few players like this that if they
- 12:10Speaker 2: do what they need to do, can can really change
- 12:14Speaker 2: the trajectory of your team. And it's a it's a
- 12:16Speaker 2: weapon like I'm thinking like Terrence Gore and the Royals
- 12:19Speaker 2: and the play playoffs type thing here that you you're
- 12:21Speaker 2: watching your standings and you've fallen back in speed, you're
- 12:24Speaker 2: plug in Chandler Simpson for a few weeks and you
- 12:26Speaker 2: take care of that, go back to what you were doing, right.
- 12:29Speaker 2: There's the flexibility you can give you is incredible, and
- 12:33Speaker 2: I think that there's a lot to be said to us.
- 12:35Speaker 2: You probably saw my bit on our in our league,
- 12:37Speaker 2: got paid up for them, and I have zero qualms
- 12:40Speaker 2: about about overpaying for Chandler Simpson a little annoyed that
- 12:44Speaker 2: I didn't pick them up right after we recorded last week,
- 12:47Speaker 2: but that's.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I hear you, And I think it's just
- 12:50Speaker 1: also exciting to see a profile like Simpson work in
- 12:53Speaker 1: the majors and it gives me like more hope for
- 12:56Speaker 1: Enrique Bradfield Junior coming through in the Baltimore system. And
- 12:59Speaker 1: then there's other players like this that are kind of
- 13:01Speaker 1: starting to matriculate through the minor leagues where their very
- 13:04Speaker 1: speed defense forward and we'll see them kind of start
- 13:09Speaker 1: becoming tools within our fantasy game when we haven't had
- 13:13Speaker 1: these players for a long time, like we started playing
- 13:17Speaker 1: fantasy baseball ourselves kind of post Ricky era, so like
- 13:21Speaker 1: because of that, we've never had kind of like we
- 13:23Speaker 1: have Billy Hamilton, but he he never really fulfilled the
- 13:27Speaker 1: destiny that he should have, and it does feel like
- 13:30Speaker 1: we've got a couple more shots at that pie.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Yep.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Absolutely, All right, Well, let's talk about another call up
- 13:36Speaker 1: where we were just discussing before we were recording that
- 13:39Speaker 1: he actually was on the short list for last week's
- 13:42Speaker 1: pod and then got kicked off because I thought it
- 13:47Speaker 1: would take an injury for him to come up and
- 13:48Speaker 1: be promoted. And while that injury happened in Miami as
- 13:52Speaker 1: Augustin Ramirez, maybe Augustin's okay. Augustin Ramirez is called up
- 13:59Speaker 1: there for the Marlins, and it is a really great
- 14:03Speaker 1: offensive profile for a catcher came over last year in
- 14:08Speaker 1: a trade from the Yankees, came through that system and
- 14:11Speaker 1: so actually like, whoa, wow, it was just last year
- 14:15Speaker 1: that the Jazz. Yes, it feels like forever ago, but
- 14:21Speaker 1: that is where Ramirez came across. And it's a very
- 14:25Speaker 1: intriguing profile because I think if it wasn't in Miami,
- 14:28Speaker 1: there would be certainly lots more buzz. But given where
- 14:31Speaker 1: that offense currently stands, and you have, you know, some
- 14:35Speaker 1: of the dudes that are in that lineup just I
- 14:39Speaker 1: don't even know where they're finding them, like Eric Wageman
- 14:42Speaker 1: and you know, for a while they were featuring Rob Brantley, again,
- 14:46Speaker 1: who who even knew he was in baseball anymore? But
- 14:48Speaker 1: that's who opened up this spot for Ramirez. What do
- 14:52Speaker 1: you think Ramirez can be in Major League Baseball? And
- 14:54Speaker 1: I think the biggest aspect I'm intrigued about with Ramirez
- 14:59Speaker 1: is whether or not some those stolen bases. He was
- 15:01Speaker 1: showing in the minor leagues stick in the majors. What
- 15:04Speaker 1: do you think?
- 15:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right. I mean, he's he's batting
- 15:08Speaker 2: it in wrestling the order he didn't he took it,
- 15:10Speaker 2: had a night off tonight. But he's bad sixth and
- 15:12Speaker 2: fourth in his other his two games that he's played,
- 15:15Speaker 2: and he's he's already stole a base and he had
- 15:17Speaker 2: five steals in nineteen games and the miners this year.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I you know, I kind of look at it as
- 15:22Speaker 2: maybe a giant a Diet JT. Real Muto type profile here,
- 15:26Speaker 2: where I think the average is going to be a
- 15:29Speaker 2: little bit lower than what you can get with real
- 15:31Speaker 2: real mutwo kind of in his prime. But I mean
- 15:35Speaker 2: I could stretch it to see a twenty twenty bat,
- 15:37Speaker 2: I think you're probably more of like a eighteen twelve
- 15:40Speaker 2: or eighteen fifteen something like that. I think that twenty
- 15:43Speaker 2: twenty is probably the wishful thinking there. But for a
- 15:46Speaker 2: catcher hitting maybe two sixty with eighteen homers and fifteen
- 15:52Speaker 2: seventeen steels something like that, like that's really really valuable.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Like that that's top five catcher worthy if that comes
- 15:59Speaker 2: to fruition, and you know, he should have every opportunity
- 16:04Speaker 2: to play here. Really, it felt like they were just
- 16:07Speaker 2: biting his time, and he's he's almost you know, he'd
- 16:10Speaker 2: been twenty four later this year. He doesn't need more seasoning.
- 16:13Speaker 2: He's he's played multiple Triple A levels. He's played in
- 16:19Speaker 2: New York Miami two years at that level, and he's
- 16:22Speaker 2: produced pretty much that whole time. And so I'm I'm excited.
- 16:27Speaker 2: I'm excited. I think he's gonna do a lot and
- 16:29Speaker 2: there's not gonna be much competition for Miami. Yeah, maybe
- 16:31Speaker 2: the counting stats that runs RBIs might be a little
- 16:34Speaker 2: bit light just because of that lineup, but hey, if
- 16:37Speaker 2: you have him a two catcher league as your second catcher,
- 16:40Speaker 2: I'm rilled. I'm absolutely thrilled, and I'd be absolutely happy
- 16:44Speaker 2: with him as a number one, assuming he fully gets
- 16:47Speaker 2: the playing time. That's my only only issue here is
- 16:50Speaker 2: that it did take an injury for him to come up.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I don't think like he should have been able to
- 16:54Speaker 2: come up regardless. But I'm you know, are the Marlins
- 16:57Speaker 2: sitting here trying to play service time thing games or
- 17:00Speaker 2: something like that where they might want to send him
- 17:02Speaker 2: back for seasoning if he's not absolutely running like crazy,
- 17:05Speaker 2: but we'll see I like him.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm terribly worried about that, because,
- 17:10Speaker 1: like I said about Rob Brantley, I mean, he's going
- 17:13Speaker 1: to be turning thirty six here pretty soon, and I mean, honestly,
- 17:17Speaker 1: the only team that will employ him out there is
- 17:19Speaker 1: the Marlins. It seems like, I guess he was in
- 17:21Speaker 1: Tampa last year but played three games, has been playing
- 17:24Speaker 1: like a game a year since twenty nineteen.
- 17:26Speaker 2: It's an intriguingfile, most amazing profile. It's like Tom Bras
- 17:30Speaker 2: backup type thing here.
- 17:31Speaker 1: It is, and it's so like he's around the organization
- 17:35Speaker 1: is like a pseudo coach that like, I think that's
- 17:38Speaker 1: where Rob Brantlee, Like, that's how they get Augustin Ramirez
- 17:43Speaker 1: full time playing time at catcher, because it's not like
- 17:46Speaker 1: they needed to make a forty man roster move for this.
- 17:49Speaker 1: That just kind of seemed like they were trying to
- 17:52Speaker 1: make it to the Super two deadline and couldn't when
- 17:54Speaker 1: they ran out of catchers, and now Ramirez is up
- 17:57Speaker 1: to stay. So yeah, I totally agree. Like, I think
- 18:00Speaker 1: he's easily like a top fifteen catcher. And you could
- 18:03Speaker 1: probably make an argument for a top twelve just given
- 18:06Speaker 1: what he can give you in the power and speed department,
- 18:09Speaker 1: along with just the overall offensive profile.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I just want to take a moment here. Rob Brantley's
- 18:16Speaker 2: history here is just incredible if I've ever seen anything
- 18:18Speaker 2: like this.
- 18:19Speaker 1: The guy came through the Miami system.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he's played in the last seven years, He's played
- 18:25Speaker 2: six major league seasons. He didn't play the twenty three season.
- 18:28Speaker 2: He's played a total and he's played in six different
- 18:30Speaker 2: seasons a total of fifteen games.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Incredible.
- 18:36Speaker 2: That is like I want is like, is that that
- 18:40Speaker 2: line ever been accomplished before? Like I feel like there's
- 18:42Speaker 2: something like Emtthew like grid Style here about Rob Brantley
- 18:46Speaker 2: that were that were missing. He had a total of
- 18:50Speaker 2: one RBIs across that time frame. So really really yeah,
- 18:56Speaker 2: backup material, I guess is what I look at it.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Well, he was involved in the the Miguel Corbarra trade.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Was he let me look it up on Baseball Reference.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I don't usually have it pulled up, but that's how.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Because he was a big time prospect for the Tigers
- 19:09Speaker 1: and then came across to the Marlins, and I think
- 19:12Speaker 1: that's how he.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Got parked there.
- 19:14Speaker 1: But let me check. No, it's the Annabal Sanchez trade
- 19:19Speaker 1: that brought Rob Brantley into town for the Marlins. That
- 19:22Speaker 1: I mean, that's how long ago. Everybody else is long
- 19:25Speaker 1: gone from that trade, Brian Flynn, Jacob Turner, Omar and Fonte.
- 19:29Speaker 1: That is this is great. Remember some guys with Rob Brandley.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Yeah, still has you have to have a full season
- 19:35Speaker 2: of games on his career, one and forty one games.
- 19:38Speaker 2: But he's played in ten major league seasons.
- 19:42Speaker 1: That is lots impressive. I mean, he's collecting like a
- 19:47Speaker 1: veterans paycheck or whatever in terms of like I think
- 19:50Speaker 1: he's probably got enough service time to be able to
- 19:52Speaker 1: get in on the benefits for the rest of life
- 19:54Speaker 1: and stuff.
- 19:55Speaker 2: That's fantastic. Yeah, that's that's that's making the most of
- 19:58Speaker 2: your career for sure.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Good work, Rob Brantley. Okay, let's get into the next
- 20:02Speaker 1: bit of news, which comes on the heels a little
- 20:04Speaker 1: bit of the Nick kurtz In promotion out in Sacramento
- 20:08Speaker 1: for the Athletics, and that is the news that Tyler
- 20:11Speaker 1: Somstrom is going to be getting some time out in
- 20:14Speaker 1: left field just so that they can be able to
- 20:17Speaker 1: balance the bats between Kurtz and Soderstrom and Brent Rooker,
- 20:21Speaker 1: because I mean, honestly, all of them are dhs, but
- 20:25Speaker 1: there's only one DH per day and only one first
- 20:28Speaker 1: basement per day, so they've got to find a way
- 20:30Speaker 1: to put Solderstrom out there. Is playing there tonight as
- 20:34Speaker 1: we're speaking for Kurtz's debut, and I've also like I
- 20:38Speaker 1: was listening on whatever broadcast I was watching the A's
- 20:43Speaker 1: I think it was yesterday that they were saying that
- 20:47Speaker 1: Solderstrom still got his catcher's gear too, So there is
- 20:49Speaker 1: a possibility that Solderstrom does get the back behind the
- 20:52Speaker 1: plate enough to start qualifying there, which if he does that,
- 20:56Speaker 1: that is like it hands down number one catcher like
- 21:00Speaker 1: round pick level because of like the value. But what
- 21:03Speaker 1: do you think with players like this making transitions to
- 21:07Speaker 1: different positions like on the fly in the season and
- 21:11Speaker 1: like what it could affect uh Soderstrom as going forward?
- 21:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I I I love it and I don't love
- 21:17Speaker 2: at the same time. Like from a pure fantasy perspective,
- 21:20Speaker 2: like a lot of a lot of leagues, you need
- 21:22Speaker 2: like five games to get eligible for this season, you
- 21:25Speaker 2: might need more to maintain it for next season, and
- 21:28Speaker 2: you know, Kurtz is up for more than five games,
- 21:30Speaker 2: like they're they're gonna move him around him and Rooker,
- 21:35Speaker 2: and Kurtz is one hundred percent of first baseman or
- 21:37Speaker 2: DH like he's not. He's not the guy that's gonna
- 21:40Speaker 2: be playing different spots. And Solderstrom clearly he's been a catcher.
- 21:44Speaker 2: He's you know, he's got that level of capability to
- 21:47Speaker 2: do different things. And so he almost certainly within like
- 21:51Speaker 2: the next week and a lot of leagues will have
- 21:53Speaker 2: outfield eligibility, which that it's it's the first base big
- 21:57Speaker 2: Bob or bat playing the outfield, and I think that's
- 21:59Speaker 2: that's big if he by some chance gets third in
- 22:03Speaker 2: or catcher that they've been talking about, because like I
- 22:06Speaker 2: remember when I drafted him in the league and in
- 22:09Speaker 2: the preseason here, it was because they had been talking
- 22:12Speaker 2: in the spring that maybe he would be the backup
- 22:14Speaker 2: catcher like that they were just not going to carry
- 22:16Speaker 2: another catcher because they've had Solderstrom on the on the roster.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And if that comes to fruition, I mean he has
- 22:22Speaker 2: he's caught a single game in the in the majors
- 22:26Speaker 2: last year, so you know, it's not like we've got
- 22:28Speaker 2: a lot of recent experience there. But if that could
- 22:31Speaker 2: be true, Like, you're absolutely right, he is a dynamite
- 22:35Speaker 2: value at catcher. So I'm loving it overall, but I'm
- 22:39Speaker 2: a little concerned of like if they start moving him
- 22:41Speaker 2: around so much that it's gonna it is hard to
- 22:44Speaker 2: adapt in season to different positions and things like that.
- 22:48Speaker 2: It's different if it's a guy that's been you know,
- 22:50Speaker 2: through the ringer and he's you know, knows what he's doing.
- 22:53Speaker 2: He's very comfortable to bad, he's he's kind of an
- 22:55Speaker 2: established commodity moving those guys around, I'm less concerned about out.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I hope that to start is just one or two
- 23:03Speaker 2: or if he does get catch your eligibilities because he's
- 23:06Speaker 2: you know, filling in and the ninth inning or like
- 23:08Speaker 2: they gives him the opportunity to like pull lngoiers or
- 23:12Speaker 2: something like that, why don't I pinch it for leangoliers.
- 23:14Speaker 2: By the way, But if you want to make something
- 23:17Speaker 2: like that, maybe the pinch run for leangoliers and then
- 23:20Speaker 2: they need you know, somebody in the ninth inning. You know,
- 23:23Speaker 2: maybe that would be an option. But I think that
- 23:25Speaker 2: there's sneaky value here, but probably just excited about this
- 23:29Speaker 2: as Kurt's being called up to be.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Honest, Yeah, you probably just saw me shaking my head
- 23:37Speaker 1: at the Shay Langaliers Pinch run comic because I knew this.
- 23:41Speaker 1: But what do you think is sprinceton?
- 23:43Speaker 2: I saw you shake your head, and I'm like, I
- 23:45Speaker 2: know Leangoliers is not fast. It can't be. He doesn't
- 23:49Speaker 2: look fast.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Seventy ninth percentile.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I knew it's gonna be the seventies when you said that,
- 23:54Speaker 2: like it's gonna.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Be some eighty. That's the twenty eighty role. Man. I
- 24:00Speaker 1: know it doesn't make sense but doesn't beat.
- 24:02Speaker 2: The eye test. But I mean, did you see ped
- 24:04Speaker 2: A Lonza running the other day? I digress digression. Please
- 24:08Speaker 2: tell me you saw Pedlanzo leg out a triple.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I saw him this afternoon score that winning run. That
- 24:16Speaker 1: one does pass the sniff test sixteen percent.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Yeah, But but what I want to say, just, uh,
- 24:21Speaker 2: if everybody listening, if you didn't see it, cool, you
- 24:24Speaker 2: need to go check this out later. Lonzo hit a
- 24:27Speaker 2: triple the other day and there was a camera angle
- 24:31Speaker 2: just going straight down second to third base, and there's
- 24:34Speaker 2: no other way to describe it as Peter Alanza looked
- 24:36Speaker 2: like a frog running his legs were so off and lost,
- 24:41Speaker 2: just like it's just like, how was this guy an athlete?
- 24:45Speaker 2: Like I don't know if he got his steps off
- 24:47Speaker 2: or what happened, but it looked looked ridiculous. And the
- 24:50Speaker 2: number of memes and you know things that people were
- 24:53Speaker 2: creating were just was priceless. And so I'm sorry. I
- 24:57Speaker 2: owe a apology to shy lange Leers for him to
- 25:00Speaker 2: Pete Alonzo.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I forgive you. I mean, maybe we should talk about
- 25:05Speaker 1: ped Alonzo for a second, because I haven't really gotten
- 25:07Speaker 1: the chance to. It's never in my realm of the
- 25:09Speaker 1: waiver wires, and I'm sure you've been just hiking them
- 25:13Speaker 1: up your top one hundred board. This will transition to
- 25:16Speaker 1: the next topic anyway, So we're getting there.
- 25:19Speaker 2: One.
- 25:19Speaker 1: This is the most gaudy stack cast page I've ever seen.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Have you pulled it up? Or do not pull up?
- 25:27Speaker 1: Maybe because I'm gonna.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Okay, I'm I'm not gonna pull it. I know I've
- 25:30Speaker 2: looked to be frank because I was doing rankings a
- 25:33Speaker 2: few days ago, and I I bring just the madness
- 25:38Speaker 2: behind the rankings. I bring all kinds of data in.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I give a stack cast, like composite score, just things
- 25:44Speaker 2: to make sure that I'm seeing the numbers behind the player,
- 25:49Speaker 2: and I know Alonso is very much up there. And
- 25:53Speaker 2: those rankings like probably the top like five right now
- 25:55Speaker 2: of Savant pages.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Oh yeah, And I mean the spray chart is also immaculate.
- 26:01Speaker 1: It is like perfect. There is no weakness in terms
- 26:03Speaker 1: of pole power or push power. It's just like he's
- 26:07Speaker 1: just hitting taters everywhere. All right, of these stats X wOBA,
- 26:11Speaker 1: X batting average, X slug average, philosophy, barrel percentage, hard
- 26:17Speaker 1: hit percentage, launch angle, sweet spot percentage, and batspeed. What
- 26:23Speaker 1: do you think his lowest percentile is in any of those.
- 26:27Speaker 2: I'm gonna say it has to be in the nineties.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I'm gonna say, I'm gonna give it ninety two is
- 26:31Speaker 2: the lowest.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Yeah, they're too low. It's ninety five. He's ninety five
- 26:34Speaker 1: cent or above in all those, which is in him.
- 26:38Speaker 2: And the one that like throws you is the expected
- 26:42Speaker 2: batting average, because that's that's always been as my struggle
- 26:47Speaker 2: as a ranker for him is because he was all
- 26:49Speaker 2: power and his batting average had started to slip into
- 26:53Speaker 2: like the low twos, and it was becoming this thing
- 26:57Speaker 2: where it's like, yeah, I'm getting forty homers, but I'm
- 27:00Speaker 2: getting basically no steals in like an actual detrimental baton average.
- 27:05Speaker 2: But it's like he is he's seeing the ball like
- 27:08Speaker 2: I don't know this like this new life of return
- 27:11Speaker 2: to New York, Like I don't. We talked about the
- 27:13Speaker 2: off season like it was there was no better landing
- 27:15Speaker 2: spot for ped Alanzo than staying with the Mets, and
- 27:18Speaker 2: he is making them look fabulous and like you look
- 27:21Speaker 2: at the plate approach like I don't, did he get
- 27:25Speaker 2: like Lasick or something like he's he's not striking out,
- 27:29Speaker 2: he's walking almost as much as he strikes out right now,
- 27:31Speaker 2: and he is on fire. So I always send to
- 27:36Speaker 2: be a little bit detracted from peed Alnzo just because
- 27:38Speaker 2: the profile, but it is he's been he's been slowly,
- 27:42Speaker 2: uh moving up the rankings.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean maybe it is a little bit of
- 27:46Speaker 1: like the Wan Soto hitting in front of him too,
- 27:48Speaker 1: that like I mean, you saw what it did for
- 27:50Speaker 1: and judge not like judges need it because I was
- 27:53Speaker 1: just looking at his although his seffant page is just
- 27:57Speaker 1: about the same as Peter Alonzo just not as great
- 27:59Speaker 1: on the sweet spot actually, but yeah, it is. He's
- 28:03Speaker 1: gonna get paid Pinalanzo is, that's for sure. But let's
- 28:06Speaker 1: stick in Queens for the next bit of news, because
- 28:09Speaker 1: we have Jose Sirie outfielder mostly center fielder, going down
- 28:13Speaker 1: for the Mets as they are trotting Tyrone Taylor out there.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Series going to be down eight to ten weeks with
- 28:20Speaker 1: a broken leg, and honestly, wasn't providing much from a
- 28:23Speaker 1: fantasy value. Was just pretty much a fielder only for
- 28:26Speaker 1: the Mets. But the flip side of the coin here
- 28:30Speaker 1: is Jeff McNeil's playing center field down in the minors
- 28:33Speaker 1: don As rehab Stent coming back from an oblique injury
- 28:36Speaker 1: in spring training. Do you think this works? Do you
- 28:40Speaker 1: think Jeff McNeil centerfielder is something that will work for
- 28:43Speaker 1: the New York Mets? And I mean, we just talked
- 28:46Speaker 1: about this with Soderstrom. Maybe the next level we didn't
- 28:50Speaker 1: talk about is if McNeil's in center, are you fading
- 28:54Speaker 1: Mets pitchers at all because of that?
- 28:56Speaker 2: Yeah, let let's be clear, McNeil's played plunting the outfield
- 29:00Speaker 2: and he's been a negative value outfielder in the corners
- 29:04Speaker 2: for the last like four years, and so I don't
- 29:07Speaker 2: think him playing center is gonna be a whole lot better.
- 29:10Speaker 2: He's it's not like he's terrible, but he's just he
- 29:12Speaker 2: doesn't have much of a range. His arm is not
- 29:15Speaker 2: terribly great for an outfielder, like he's. He he's the
- 29:20Speaker 2: epitome right now of the like last guy on a
- 29:24Speaker 2: roster from a fantasy perspective as far as value is concerned,
- 29:28Speaker 2: Like he's probably in your waiver wire every every week
- 29:32Speaker 2: because he just isn't providing enough value. And yeah, it's
- 29:37Speaker 2: probably not gonna help Mets pictures. I don't know that
- 29:39Speaker 2: I would downgrade anybody just because of this. It's not
- 29:43Speaker 2: like Marcello Zuna playing the outfield type thing here. There's
- 29:46Speaker 2: worse things that can happen to a picture. But I'm not, like,
- 29:52Speaker 2: it's not changing Jeff McNeil's value. It's not jumping off,
- 29:57Speaker 2: Like I still see McNeil as very much a replacement
- 30:00Speaker 2: level player or even slightly below. Uh so, yeah, well
- 30:03Speaker 2: we'll see. He's always the kind of guy I think
- 30:05Speaker 2: I want to pick up, and then I pick him
- 30:07Speaker 2: up on them like I want to do that.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I do too in really deep leagues,
- 30:12Speaker 1: just because he does provide some utility value and he's
- 30:16Speaker 1: been hitting the ball all right, like he's been showing
- 30:18Speaker 1: more power, and I'm interested in McNeil in that type
- 30:22Speaker 1: of really deep league. But certainly, I mean, center field
- 30:25Speaker 1: is not an easy task. It's a lot of running
- 30:27Speaker 1: that you do worry that if it SAPs like any
- 30:30Speaker 1: of the value that he had, that there's no way
- 30:35Speaker 1: they're going to do it then, Like, if anything, they're
- 30:37Speaker 1: going to move Louis on Helakunya out to center, I
- 30:39Speaker 1: think before Jeff McNeil at the big leagues. It's just
- 30:42Speaker 1: kind of really fascinating to watch the Mets do that.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Right now. Okay, let's move into the maybe less happy
- 30:50Speaker 1: part of the news and notes, as we've got injuries
- 30:52Speaker 1: and closer talk, because first we're gonna start off with
- 30:56Speaker 1: a couple of hamming string injuries. First one we have
- 30:59Speaker 1: is he praised him a lot last week. Spencer Strider
- 31:03Speaker 1: on the il with a hammy injury. I mean, when
- 31:06Speaker 1: we were talking about last week, I think I ranked
- 31:08Speaker 1: him number three because I forgot about the existence of
- 31:12Speaker 1: tweak schooble just because that's like one player. I don't
- 31:15Speaker 1: have any roster like rate of him anywhere because like
- 31:21Speaker 1: in some of our keeperish leagues, he's been kept. In
- 31:24Speaker 1: other leagues, he was a first round pick and that's
- 31:27Speaker 1: not the game I play. So but back to Strider,
- 31:30Speaker 1: I guess this is probably one of the things. We
- 31:32Speaker 1: hinted at it a little bit in terms of like
- 31:34Speaker 1: getting back from a major elbow injury, but he was
- 31:37Speaker 1: just looking so good and we had never had to
- 31:40Speaker 1: deal with kind of these type of soft iss shoe
- 31:42Speaker 1: tissue injuries for Strider, but certainly part of the fallout
- 31:45Speaker 1: for that type of injury recovery. Are you concerned about
- 31:50Speaker 1: this going forward because it cropped up so soon, or
- 31:53Speaker 1: you know, did you think it could have an impact
- 31:56Speaker 1: on his kinetic chain in terms of pitching the rest
- 31:58Speaker 1: of the season.
- 31:59Speaker 2: I'm like, I've got a seventeen PC concern very specific.
- 32:05Speaker 2: I don't love it, But at the same time, it
- 32:09Speaker 2: very much seemed just reading the reports that like he
- 32:12Speaker 2: was warming up, he felt something twins a little bit.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Didn't want to push it and make it worse, So okay,
- 32:18Speaker 2: let's hold back. He probably can keep working out throwing
- 32:24Speaker 2: things like that, we're probably gonna a few rotation spots
- 32:26Speaker 2: and we'll be back. He already came back, I think,
- 32:29Speaker 2: sooner than we all expected. So yeah, it hurts because
- 32:31Speaker 2: like you had him, he was back and now you're
- 32:35Speaker 2: losing him. But at the same time, you know, as
- 32:37Speaker 2: long as he truly comes back healthy, he's still gonna
- 32:41Speaker 2: be who he was. I'm not too terribly worried about
- 32:43Speaker 2: the overall kinetic chain, as you said, I don't know
- 32:46Speaker 2: how many times you can get kinetic chain into one
- 32:48Speaker 2: of these podcasts, but we'll see. So I'm not overly concerned,
- 32:53Speaker 2: more just frustrated for like, why can't we have nice
- 32:56Speaker 2: things kind of thing?
- 32:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I hear you. Okay. The next hammy injury
- 33:00Speaker 1: we have is shortstop Corey Seeger of the Texas Rangers
- 33:04Speaker 1: going down. It was a very clear hammy tweak when
- 33:08Speaker 1: he was running to first base last night, and he's
- 33:12Speaker 1: been off to a great start to eighty six three
- 33:14Speaker 1: forty five for sixty eight over eighty four played appearances.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Is this kind of the cost of Corey Seeger, who
- 33:21Speaker 1: has never played more than one hundred and fifty seven
- 33:24Speaker 1: games in twenty sixteen as a twenty two year old
- 33:26Speaker 1: recent high one hundred and fifty one games in twenty
- 33:29Speaker 1: twenty two, So he's always banged up. Is this just
- 33:32Speaker 1: what you baked into the Corey Seager price?
- 33:34Speaker 2: I think it is. What I will say, is I
- 33:37Speaker 2: the last three years, like he's missed time here and there,
- 33:41Speaker 2: but a lot of it was also them just trying
- 33:43Speaker 2: to keep him healthy. And I feel like the shine
- 33:46Speaker 2: was starting to come off of the Corey Seegers always
- 33:48Speaker 2: hurt type of thing, because you know, even if you
- 33:50Speaker 2: go back, let's let's just say five years twenty twenty,
- 33:52Speaker 2: he played almost every game. In the shortened season twenty
- 33:55Speaker 2: twenty one, he hit ninety five games, so he did
- 33:57Speaker 2: have an injury sent there, but another was one fifty
- 33:59Speaker 2: one one night eighteen one, twenty three. Like he's been
- 34:03Speaker 2: relatively healthy for eighty five percent of the time the
- 34:07Speaker 2: last five years, and so I felt like that had
- 34:10Speaker 2: kind of worn off, and now it feels like it's like, man, yeah,
- 34:15Speaker 2: I knew it was there. I knew it was there.
- 34:17Speaker 2: I knew this was the risk with Seeker. I'm a
- 34:18Speaker 2: little bit more concerned with this one. I'm not so
- 34:21Speaker 2: much because he's not a speedster by any means. It
- 34:24Speaker 2: just you know, they're saying, you know, minimum stay. It
- 34:27Speaker 2: feels again much more like a tweak. I feel like
- 34:30Speaker 2: this one's gonna be maybe more on like the Jackson
- 34:32Speaker 2: Merrill a scale here where minimum stay and then minimum
- 34:36Speaker 2: stay turns into two weeks and then three and then he's,
- 34:39Speaker 2: you know, back at the end of the month type thing,
- 34:42Speaker 2: end of May type thing. That's that's my worry here.
- 34:45Speaker 2: It feels a little bit slippery slope would not be surprising,
- 34:49Speaker 2: but Corey Seegers still as valuable as ever when he's
- 34:51Speaker 2: in the lineup. So you can't move on from You
- 34:53Speaker 2: can't change anything. You just got to find a stop
- 34:56Speaker 2: gap and move on. Give me a whore hee Pelonco
- 34:58Speaker 2: for a month and we'll be fine.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that's fair. Okay. Next injury we
- 35:03Speaker 1: have is Luisa Rise of the San Diego Padres suffered
- 35:06Speaker 1: a concussion in a pretty scary looking collision in the
- 35:09Speaker 1: first inning of Sunday Night Baseball that delayed the game
- 35:12Speaker 1: for a while, and it looked like it could have
- 35:15Speaker 1: possibly been like a neck injury or something as they
- 35:18Speaker 1: carried him off, but thankfully it was only a concussion.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Nothing anything super super serious, but obviously concussions are no
- 35:25Speaker 1: fun either. He's on the seven day IL and we'll
- 35:29Speaker 1: see kind of what that recovery timeline from the concussion is.
- 35:33Speaker 1: I mean, it does feel a little weird coming off
- 35:35Speaker 1: from that discussion to discuss as fantasy prospects. But I mean,
- 35:38Speaker 1: I think given what we've talked about in terms of
- 35:43Speaker 1: what he is for fantasy in terms of the one
- 35:46Speaker 1: category player for batting average, probably a likelihood that he
- 35:51Speaker 1: hits some waiver wire and free agent pools out there.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Currently actually is clocked in at six dollars of value
- 35:58Speaker 1: in our Player Raider, partly because he has pop three
- 36:00Speaker 1: homers even without a barrel and stolen two bases. But
- 36:04Speaker 1: the batting average, even if it is like in the
- 36:06Speaker 1: two ninety range, is so sublime compared to the league
- 36:11Speaker 1: batting average. Is it somebody in a rise that you
- 36:15Speaker 1: would consider picking up and stashing out on your eye
- 36:18Speaker 1: l just to booy your average later in the season.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's gonna go back to the Chandler's
- 36:23Speaker 2: Simpson discussion here, right, I have if it's free, and
- 36:26Speaker 2: I can put in my my IL and then decide
- 36:29Speaker 2: later yeah, I absolutely do that. I think it's a
- 36:31Speaker 2: wise decision. You look at he comes back and you
- 36:34Speaker 2: are struggling. From a batting average perspective, there's nobody better
- 36:37Speaker 2: in the league to help you through that. And if
- 36:39Speaker 2: you're struggling batting average is probably because you're doing pretty
- 36:41Speaker 2: well in like homers and RBIs and things like that,
- 36:44Speaker 2: where it's not a rise is a sweet spot. So
- 36:47Speaker 2: he is, you know, to your point, hitting the ball
- 36:49Speaker 2: a little bit better than he has in the past,
- 36:51Speaker 2: but he's still luis a rise where he's not walking
- 36:54Speaker 2: or striking out or basically anything else. So maybe I
- 36:58Speaker 2: have a little concern from a concussion perspective, is like
- 37:02Speaker 2: those symptoms can linger. They absolutely can linger, and we
- 37:05Speaker 2: don't see it much in baseball. I actually did. I
- 37:07Speaker 2: don't know if you saw the Game of the night before.
- 37:11Speaker 2: There was a very similar play that happened in Toronto
- 37:15Speaker 2: where Alan Rodin ran into the tree that is roady
- 37:20Speaker 2: Rowdy te Lez, and I think Rowdy Telez just like
- 37:23Speaker 2: didn't like it, didn't even didn't even move like and
- 37:27Speaker 2: he just kind of looked disgusted, like what happened here.
- 37:30Speaker 2: And so it's just those things just don't seem to
- 37:32Speaker 2: happen in baseball nearly as much unless it's like a
- 37:34Speaker 2: hit by pitch. So I don't think we have as
- 37:37Speaker 2: much experience with guys coming back from that, and I
- 37:40Speaker 2: do have a little concern that it's gonna take a
- 37:42Speaker 2: little bit whiles around back into form, especially with what
- 37:45Speaker 2: he's good at, which is back control, knowing the zone,
- 37:48Speaker 2: things like that. He's gonna be a little fuzzy. Let's
- 37:51Speaker 2: put that way. He's gonna be little fuzzy. Coming from
- 37:53Speaker 2: guys who had concussions in his life, things can be
- 37:56Speaker 2: fuzzy for a while.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I guess we see it in catchers
- 37:59Speaker 1: with that kind of a different animal, especially given how
- 38:03Speaker 1: taxing that position is, and we've seen it in Justin Mornau.
- 38:05Speaker 1: But like, yeah, it goes back aways. I think the
- 38:08Speaker 1: concussion protocol and just overall sports science has come much
- 38:13Speaker 1: further than what Justin Morneau went through. So yeah, it
- 38:16Speaker 1: will be hopefully he gets back on the men soon
- 38:19Speaker 1: and can get on the field, but certainly, yeah, keep
- 38:22Speaker 1: all those things in mind if you're going to be
- 38:24Speaker 1: picking up a rise or stashing him away out there. Okay,
- 38:27Speaker 1: let's move on to those closers, because I got a
- 38:30Speaker 1: couple of ugly ones in the NL Central discuss here.
- 38:33Speaker 1: First one, David Bednar is back in Pittsburgh after his
- 38:37Speaker 1: stint down in Triple A. Looked really good down in
- 38:40Speaker 1: Triple A, but it was Triple A. He had five
- 38:42Speaker 1: innings down there, put up a twelve point six K nine,
- 38:46Speaker 1: did not allow a run, had a decent ground ball, right,
- 38:50Speaker 1: a forty four percent ground ball. Right. That gets some
- 38:52Speaker 1: kind of back into the realm of where he was
- 38:54Speaker 1: at the majors, and especially kind of I think that's
- 38:58Speaker 1: even though it was a high ground well right in
- 39:00Speaker 1: the Majors before he got sent down, like the homers
- 39:04Speaker 1: and the fly balls on the fly balls is kind
- 39:06Speaker 1: of what's been costing Bednar. I guess my question here is,
- 39:10Speaker 1: I mean, what are you doing with him? Because, like
- 39:13Speaker 1: I got a question about him in my like Waiver
- 39:15Speaker 1: Wire article, I'm actually like out on Bednar until I
- 39:18Speaker 1: see him like perform in the major leagues, which I
- 39:21Speaker 1: know when you're trying to tuck away saves isn't gonna work,
- 39:25Speaker 1: but it's just it hasn't been right for over a year,
- 39:30Speaker 1: and I need him to do it at the major
- 39:32Speaker 1: league level before I trust him.
- 39:34Speaker 2: What about you, I'm I'm a medium in I'm I'm
- 39:37Speaker 2: actually adding Bednar where I can without a big cost
- 39:42Speaker 2: and a few reasons, Like I know he got sent down,
- 39:45Speaker 2: but like he didn't really have a chance to establish himself.
- 39:48Speaker 2: He got sent down after three games. The guy had
- 39:52Speaker 2: three or they.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Were against the Marlins.
- 39:56Speaker 2: I mean, but the Marlins, they know they got somebody's number.
- 39:58Speaker 2: I mean, give it to them. But like, I know
- 40:00Speaker 2: he looked bad in three games, but like it was
- 40:02Speaker 2: three games, like at the beginning of the season, things
- 40:05Speaker 2: like that. Do I think he's absolutely phenomenal. It's gonna
- 40:09Speaker 2: be back. But he's been that guy before and for
- 40:12Speaker 2: a team in Pittsburgh who needs to always capitalize in value,
- 40:16Speaker 2: Like there is no better, you know, incentive than getting
- 40:20Speaker 2: him healthy and get him in that closure role, getting
- 40:22Speaker 2: him looking right than the trade deadline. And so I
- 40:26Speaker 2: think they gonna work him back in. I mean, he's
- 40:28Speaker 2: he's pitched two games since he's been called back up,
- 40:32Speaker 2: and he's struck out three guys in those games, hasn't
- 40:35Speaker 2: walked anybody. I think they're gonna work him back in,
- 40:39Speaker 2: and I sometimes it just takes that like shot in
- 40:42Speaker 2: the gut to be like, hey, you're not invincible here,
- 40:45Speaker 2: You're not that guy to work things back. So I
- 40:48Speaker 2: see a reasonable path two decent number of saves through
- 40:52Speaker 2: a decent result that I'm willing to put him on
- 40:55Speaker 2: my bench. Let me be very clear, I'm not starting
- 40:57Speaker 2: him anywhere, but I am that somebody dropped him and
- 41:01Speaker 2: I've got an available bench spot or maybe like a
- 41:04Speaker 2: replacement level bench spot that i've hold in a prospect.
- 41:06Speaker 2: We know, one of those seventeen prospects that called up
- 41:09Speaker 2: this week, I've got that spot. I'm using that for
- 41:12Speaker 2: a David Bednar for sure.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yeah, I think that's fair.
- 41:16Speaker 2: Let me call what other guys out? What are you
- 41:18Speaker 2: thinking about? Devin Williams. I'm curious we're talking about the
- 41:20Speaker 2: clothes here. Yeah, what do you because I'm thinking about
- 41:23Speaker 2: because I picked up Bednar and I've also picked up
- 41:25Speaker 2: Luke Weaver. Yeah recently. Where yet with Devin Williams.
- 41:30Speaker 1: I mean he was my cell when we did the
- 41:32Speaker 1: Al East preview, because I mean you could just see
- 41:35Speaker 1: where with Snowball to this point of like it has
- 41:39Speaker 1: not been good and then once you get into that
- 41:41Speaker 1: pressure Cooker with the New York media and being on
- 41:44Speaker 1: the Yankees. I mean, we saw what it did to
- 41:46Speaker 1: Joey Gallo that, like, this is a guy who is
- 41:49Speaker 1: coming off of a back injury. It's significant back injury.
- 41:52Speaker 1: Last year only threw twenty one and two thirds innings.
- 41:56Speaker 1: I'm really worried about it. Like I do think you
- 41:59Speaker 1: need to be hand ing with Weaver wherever you can.
- 42:02Speaker 1: You can't shop Devin Williams. You're not going to be
- 42:05Speaker 1: able to trade him, and so you're kind of almost
- 42:08Speaker 1: in the same situation that you are with Bednar, where
- 42:10Speaker 1: you kind of just got to bench him and hope
- 42:12Speaker 1: he writes it out. But I'm not terribly hopeful right
- 42:15Speaker 1: now because the stuff plus has looked bad too the people.
- 42:20Speaker 1: A lot of what Bednar constructed as a profile was
- 42:25Speaker 1: getting people to bite on that nasty change up. And
- 42:27Speaker 1: if people aren't going to bite on that and aren't
- 42:30Speaker 1: going to swing, that's when the walks become a huge
- 42:33Speaker 1: issue because he's not thrown in the zone enough. So
- 42:36Speaker 1: I'm not very confident that he's going to be able
- 42:38Speaker 1: to turn around very quickly there.
- 42:40Speaker 2: What about you, Yeah, I'm kind of the same boat
- 42:42Speaker 2: like you. Said he's not worth trading for. I'll tell
- 42:44Speaker 2: you I did actually try to trade from in one
- 42:46Speaker 2: of our leagues. But the move I made was I
- 42:48Speaker 2: picked up Luke Weaver and then tried to trade for him.
- 42:52Speaker 2: And you got to think through these things right, And
- 42:57Speaker 2: I couldn't get them. Whoever had him was two invested,
- 43:00Speaker 2: and I end up picking up a different closer from him,
- 43:03Speaker 2: and I'm actually thrilled about it because he just doesn't
- 43:06Speaker 2: look right. And I'm actually I lost striker this week
- 43:09Speaker 2: in that league and threw Weaver in because I think
- 43:12Speaker 2: he actually has a chance to get saves like this week.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Because I do. I think they're gonna pull Williams from
- 43:19Speaker 2: that closure role before too long.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Yeah, And that was always kind of the other factors
- 43:24Speaker 1: that that's a really good bullpen. You not only have
- 43:26Speaker 1: Luke Weaver, you have Fernando Cruz, you have Mark later Junior,
- 43:30Speaker 1: you have Ian Hamilton, you have Tim Hill, you have
- 43:32Speaker 1: Tyler Matzik. All those dudes have been pretty elite relievers
- 43:37Speaker 1: at some point in their careers and all would have
- 43:40Speaker 1: arguments for that closer's job if it wasn't for Luke Weaver.
- 43:44Speaker 1: So that was the other kind of strike against Devin
- 43:47Speaker 1: Williams was that they had no incentive to ride through
- 43:50Speaker 1: the bad times with him.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Absolutely, Okay, Well let's get into another maybe closer stash.
- 43:58Speaker 1: I think he was kind of like a sexy pick
- 44:00Speaker 1: coming into twenty twenty five, and that is Milwaukee Brewer's
- 44:04Speaker 1: right handed reliever Craig Yoho, who a lot of what
- 44:08Speaker 1: people were looking at in terms of bringing him through
- 44:12Speaker 1: eighth round pick out of Indiana, which is kind of
- 44:15Speaker 1: you don't see that very often. Ten thousand dollars signing
- 44:17Speaker 1: bonus so came from pretty humble start here for Craig Yoho.
- 44:21Speaker 1: But last year in tripa A he put up a
- 44:24Speaker 1: one to twenty six ERA and in three stops last
- 44:28Speaker 1: year he had a fifteen point eight K nine with
- 44:31Speaker 1: a less than one ERA. It's all predicated on Actually,
- 44:36Speaker 1: it's kind of like Devin Williams, a very very nasty
- 44:39Speaker 1: change up that hasn't really popped yet and stuff. Plus,
- 44:42Speaker 1: I don't know how well it will because they know
- 44:44Speaker 1: stuff plus like change ups are a little tough to track.
- 44:48Speaker 1: But I've seen him picked up in some of like
- 44:50Speaker 1: the RCL leagues I'm in. I've seen lots of other
- 44:53Speaker 1: places where people are suggesting him for pickup. Last week
- 44:56Speaker 1: we talked about Trevor McGill there the closer for the Brewers,
- 45:01Speaker 1: dealing with some mysterious knee ailment. Do you think that
- 45:07Speaker 1: Yoho is worth a flyer in any leagues out there
- 45:10Speaker 1: and kind of what depth are you maybe looking at
- 45:12Speaker 1: taking a flyer on Yoho.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I probably have him down the pecking
- 45:16Speaker 2: order of some of the guys we just talked about,
- 45:17Speaker 2: like a Weaver, even a Bednar right, I'd probably take
- 45:20Speaker 2: at this point over a Yoho. But I think maybe
- 45:26Speaker 2: a dynasty league, I think that that would would would
- 45:29Speaker 2: be flipped. I still think Weaver is a guy I'm
- 45:32Speaker 2: definitely targeting, but I think he looks like a closure
- 45:35Speaker 2: of the future. But I think he's a guy that
- 45:36Speaker 2: they're going to just try to work in because they
- 45:39Speaker 2: know that's who he needs to be and they're not
- 45:41Speaker 2: going to try to force that that earlier. It's kind
- 45:42Speaker 2: of the Beenjoyce kind of thing where I mean, the
- 45:45Speaker 2: injury's over there, but like they don't just hand him
- 45:47Speaker 2: the role. They want him to work up to it
- 45:49Speaker 2: so that when you know, trade deadline comes and they
- 45:52Speaker 2: want to move Trevor McGill and hopefully he's healthy at
- 45:55Speaker 2: that point then they can do that and they feel
- 45:57Speaker 2: comfortable they they're not really losing anything, you know. So
- 46:01Speaker 2: I think that he's interesting and I do think he
- 46:05Speaker 2: is likely a closure of the future. I don't know
- 46:07Speaker 2: that it's gonna happen this year, so I think it's
- 46:10Speaker 2: a sneaky pickup, more in a dynasty keeper league than
- 46:13Speaker 2: anything else.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's fair. And I mean I also
- 46:16Speaker 1: put him on the rundown because saying Yoho is.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Keep it straight face, saying well, we got the Yoho
- 46:23Speaker 2: coming in here, Like, I don't know they're gonna pay
- 46:27Speaker 2: Hell's bells when Yoho comes in, It's just not going
- 46:29Speaker 2: to have the same ring.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean I hope that he does get
- 46:32Speaker 1: into the closer role just so that at Rasball, like
- 46:35Speaker 1: our pun game will be just pushed to the maximum
- 46:38Speaker 1: level if we can get some Yoho action, you know. Okay, Well,
- 46:43Speaker 1: we don't really have any of the Baseball card calendar
- 46:46Speaker 1: updates to talk about because the one that happened was
- 46:49Speaker 1: they pushed forward twenty twenty five. Tops Heritage was supposed
- 46:52Speaker 1: to come out on April thirtieth coming out today as
- 46:55Speaker 1: we're talking on the twenty third, so we are going
- 46:58Speaker 1: to take a short break. We're going to return and
- 47:00Speaker 1: talk about twenty twenty five TOPS Heritage. So stick around,
- 47:20Speaker 1: all right, Welcome back, everybody. We are going to discuss
- 47:23Speaker 1: the release of twenty twenty five TOPS Heritage, So right
- 47:27Speaker 1: off the bat, I should mention that if you want
- 47:29Speaker 1: to see pictures of any of the cards that we're
- 47:31Speaker 1: going to be discussing, there is a related post to
- 47:34Speaker 1: this podcast on rasball dot com. You can either search
- 47:38Speaker 1: cards and categories or my last name Coulard, or even
- 47:42Speaker 1: if you just type in TOPS. We're on there every week,
- 47:45Speaker 1: you can find us. I'll I think you know how
- 47:47Speaker 1: to use the internet, how to find a website. It's
- 47:50Speaker 1: also in the show notes. There's a link down there
- 47:52Speaker 1: so that you can click on it pretty easily that
- 47:55Speaker 1: will allow you to actually see the visual of these
- 47:57Speaker 1: cards as opposed to just listen to us talk about them.
- 48:00Speaker 1: We're going to do our best, but we're gonna get
- 48:02Speaker 1: into some of these nitty gritty details about heritage, and
- 48:05Speaker 1: it's gonna be helpful to look at some of the
- 48:07Speaker 1: pictures because there are some very very slight variations in
- 48:11Speaker 1: this set that honestly, we haven't seen in Heritage for
- 48:14Speaker 1: a couple of years. Usually they've been either very prominent
- 48:17Speaker 1: or well labeled within the cards. So it's going to
- 48:20Speaker 1: take quite the ego eye when you're flipping through any
- 48:24Speaker 1: Tops Heritage twenty twenty five to make sure that you're
- 48:27Speaker 1: getting all those variations and inserts and everything and pulling
- 48:30Speaker 1: them out from your base cards. So, like I said
- 48:33Speaker 1: at the beginning of the show, if you think that
- 48:35Speaker 1: we were just talking about Tops Heritage, it's because we
- 48:37Speaker 1: were so Tops Heritage High Heritage or Heritage High Number
- 48:41Speaker 1: twenty twenty four just came out the end of March.
- 48:44Speaker 1: That episode was eighty five, and if you want another
- 48:47Speaker 1: overview of twenty twenty four Tops Heritage, just like the
- 48:50Speaker 1: regular set before we got to High Number, that was
- 48:53Speaker 1: back episode thirty nine came out around this time last year.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Lots of those caveats kind of hold true in terms
- 49:00Speaker 1: of you're gonna be looking at an old school throwback
- 49:03Speaker 1: design here for Tops Heritage this year in nineteen seventy six,
- 49:07Speaker 1: which honestly, this is one of my favorite TOPS designs
- 49:10Speaker 1: of all time. Great color, great borders, just great boxing
- 49:15Speaker 1: in terms of like the centering of everything. What have
- 49:18Speaker 1: you thought over the years of the nineteen seventy six
- 49:21Speaker 1: design brew Because, like I said, it's up there in
- 49:23Speaker 1: terms of like probably like the top ish tier of
- 49:27Speaker 1: like that eighty twenty rule. It's in the top twenty
- 49:29Speaker 1: percent for me.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's one of those that when you
- 49:33Speaker 2: hit that time frame kind of those mid seventies, like
- 49:36Speaker 2: the card designs were like going downhill to like you
- 49:39Speaker 2: were just on the border. They still did a really
- 49:41Speaker 2: good job with this one. It definitely like when I
- 49:44Speaker 2: look at seventy six, like it feels vintage, Like it
- 49:47Speaker 2: does feel like it's a vintage card, where like I
- 49:49Speaker 2: feel like two three years later it no longer felt
- 49:53Speaker 2: like vintage. It felt like you were all like the
- 49:54Speaker 2: precipice of like junk wax, almost like there was a
- 49:57Speaker 2: very fine line. I gotta find what you're really phil
- 50:00Speaker 2: flip to me. But this still feels vintage when I
- 50:03Speaker 2: see them out there, and I love that aspect of it.
- 50:07Speaker 2: So it's a great design. It's it's also very kind
- 50:11Speaker 2: of I say, I don't say easy on the eyes.
- 50:12Speaker 2: I don't know if that's the right way to put it.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Just all I say, all the informations there, it's like,
- 50:17Speaker 2: I love the fact there's a nice border team name,
- 50:19Speaker 2: player name, position like and it's always got the heritage
- 50:23Speaker 2: pose photos, which you have to have to love back
- 50:26Speaker 2: from the old days where all your vintage cards were
- 50:29Speaker 2: like posed never action shots. So yep, always a big
- 50:34Speaker 2: fan of heritage. I would I would argue it's probably
- 50:36Speaker 2: in the top three or five rips for me throughout
- 50:39Speaker 2: a season, and not there's other products would rather rip,
- 50:43Speaker 2: don't get me wrong, but reasonably actually be willing to
- 50:46Speaker 2: rip because the price point and be available like this,
- 50:50Speaker 2: Like I would really strongly debated buying a box on
- 50:53Speaker 2: the way home today, but I'd seen somebody rip an
- 50:55Speaker 2: entire case, and I'll be I'll be frank. The the
- 51:00Speaker 2: the return value is it's tough, like it's going to
- 51:03Speaker 2: depend on a single card hitting. It's gonna be if
- 51:07Speaker 2: you get an auto. The case I saw was a twelve,
- 51:09Speaker 2: so it's twelve boxes in the case. A guy managed
- 51:12Speaker 2: five autos out of that. But I would say there's
- 51:16Speaker 2: probably one, only one or two box that actually returned
- 51:19Speaker 2: the value of one hundred and twenty five ish dollars
- 51:22Speaker 2: hobby box value, and I think that was ben Rice auto,
- 51:26Speaker 2: which is actually one of the I think unexpected valuable
- 51:30Speaker 2: cards already in this that Ben Rice autos are in
- 51:34Speaker 2: the product and they're going for a hefty penny because
- 51:36Speaker 2: he wasn't anywhere, and this is one of the first
- 51:38Speaker 2: spots where you're really getting that, especially with the real
- 51:40Speaker 2: one autos that people.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Love, yeah, exactly. And it is also such a huge
- 51:45Speaker 1: project product in terms of set collectors set builders that
- 51:50Speaker 1: because of the vintage look to it and feel like
- 51:53Speaker 1: I do think that one of the things I think
- 51:55Speaker 1: about with the nineteen seventy six design is the thicker
- 51:58Speaker 1: card stock and that it's really going to come through
- 52:01Speaker 1: very well on this twenty twenty five heritage. But people
- 52:04Speaker 1: love to put together the entire set from all the
- 52:08Speaker 1: way through of the you know, base three hundred cards
- 52:12Speaker 1: set I believe, or four hundred card set my bad,
- 52:14Speaker 1: and then all the short prints that are from four
- 52:16Speaker 1: hundred to five hundred. So it's a really big chase
- 52:20Speaker 1: and everybody in the hobby loves ripping it. It's available
- 52:25Speaker 1: everywhere as well. Like we kind of highlighted there that
- 52:28Speaker 1: you should be able to find this in retail locations
- 52:30Speaker 1: like your walmarts and your targets, and also your hobby
- 52:34Speaker 1: shops out there, so you should be able to have
- 52:36Speaker 1: access to individual packs, hangars, blasters, hobby boxes, megaboxers. There's
- 52:43Speaker 1: lots of different ways to open Heritage. I will say though, that,
- 52:47Speaker 1: like you saw in that rip of that entire case,
- 52:51Speaker 1: it's never really paid off well for me, just because
- 52:54Speaker 1: it is very widely available. Even in the hobby boxes,
- 52:57Speaker 1: you're guaranteed one auto, one relic, one of one or
- 53:02Speaker 1: the other. Usually it's one of those relics where you're
- 53:05Speaker 1: not totally sure where the source of the napkin patches
- 53:09Speaker 1: or the sliver of the woods from, because the autos
- 53:13Speaker 1: are a lot more limited compared to some of those patches.
- 53:16Speaker 1: But the one redeeming factor is if you're into card collecting,
- 53:20Speaker 1: you can't go wrong having Heritage in there. That like
- 53:22Speaker 1: it just they're really fun to collect, and it is
- 53:25Speaker 1: probably the number two, I would say number two most
- 53:29Speaker 1: popular released behind Flagship every year, that like it is
- 53:33Speaker 1: just one that everybody knows, and like especially the Rookie cards,
- 53:37Speaker 1: people do kind of consider those along with the Flagship
- 53:42Speaker 1: Rookie cards as some of the more important rookie cards
- 53:45Speaker 1: to own.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, I put it. I think roughly number
- 53:48Speaker 2: three is I was thinking about it because I was
- 53:50Speaker 2: including Chrome.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but even in Bowman's it's just a whole different
- 53:56Speaker 2: ballgame of what you're trying to do. And then you
- 53:59Speaker 2: can't go compare to like the museum collections or the
- 54:02Speaker 2: Sapphires or anything like that. It's just it's not the
- 54:04Speaker 2: same price point of realm. So I again, I think
- 54:07Speaker 2: I think it's a fun rip, I really do, and
- 54:10Speaker 2: the they are really great cards, Like I think that's
- 54:13Speaker 2: it is truly a card collector set, which is something
- 54:17Speaker 2: great for you, and I I agree it is. I
- 54:20Speaker 2: really wish it was a two hit product, like a
- 54:23Speaker 2: two hit guarantee, and I feel like back in the
- 54:25Speaker 2: day it may have been. And I think that's I
- 54:28Speaker 2: haven't found the overall print run on it. I don't
- 54:31Speaker 2: know if you have managed to find that, but it
- 54:34Speaker 2: does feel that the print run has I would say doubled,
- 54:38Speaker 2: but it's it's gone up pretty significantly over the last
- 54:40Speaker 2: few years. And Heritage used to be like every other pack,
- 54:43Speaker 2: you were finding something unique, something special, and that was
- 54:47Speaker 2: just exciting, and now it's like every five six packs
- 54:50Speaker 2: you're finding something, and it's it's a little bit harder
- 54:53Speaker 2: to kind of get into that when you're you're claiming
- 54:58Speaker 2: that the sps are all these high numbered but they're
- 55:00Speaker 2: really not that hard to find. They're like one number
- 55:02Speaker 2: two packs or something like that, if I recall correctly.
- 55:05Speaker 2: So actually one in four packs one four packs now,
- 55:08Speaker 2: so little a little bit a little bit harder.
- 55:11Speaker 1: To get Yeah, And I mean actually, because I'm looking
- 55:15Speaker 1: through the rookie cards in the high numbers, there's really
- 55:20Speaker 1: even not like a crazy one in there that like
- 55:23Speaker 1: ben Rice is probably the most desirable one. But usually
- 55:26Speaker 1: they do bury like one of the higher end rookies
- 55:30Speaker 1: into the short prints, but not this year, so that
- 55:33Speaker 1: makes it even kind of easier to put together that. Certainly,
- 55:36Speaker 1: it's tough when you're trying to do the set building,
- 55:38Speaker 1: you're trying to put together undred short prints, but when
- 55:41Speaker 1: you're not doing that, they don't generally like hold too
- 55:45Speaker 1: much value outside of the first week of ripping, when
- 55:47Speaker 1: those collectors are making sure that they get all their
- 55:50Speaker 1: short prints. So that is something to keep in mind
- 55:52Speaker 1: if you're listening to this podcast. Within the first couple
- 55:56Speaker 1: weeks of Heritage being out, and you get some of
- 55:59Speaker 1: these short prints in whatever you're ripping, certainly list them
- 56:02Speaker 1: on eBay as quick as you can, because the value
- 56:05Speaker 1: for them just really does fall off a cliff pretty quickly,
- 56:08Speaker 1: from being a ten dollars card to a five dollars
- 56:11Speaker 1: card to just like a dollar card if it's a
- 56:14Speaker 1: common player. Let's get into some of the rookies, though,
- 56:18Speaker 1: because this is the first chance that we have at
- 56:20Speaker 1: Rookie Sasaki rookie cards, because he has not been in
- 56:23Speaker 1: Series one, but he is in Tops Heritage. Also have
- 56:26Speaker 1: James Wood in this set. We have all sorts of
- 56:31Speaker 1: Zebbie Matthews, kind of other classic players that we've been
- 56:35Speaker 1: putting together. Anyone else Dylan Cruz isn't here too, anyone else.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Cruse, You got Spencer Swuellenbach, I think is a big one.
- 56:43Speaker 2: I've always a sucker for Connor Norby. Yeah, even though
- 56:46Speaker 2: I probably shouldn't shouldn't shouldn't be And I mean there's
- 56:51Speaker 2: a few others here. Kumar Rocker, Yeah, Kumar Rockers in here,
- 56:55Speaker 2: said Ben Rice. I think is maybe one of the
- 56:57Speaker 2: surprise of the group. Jackson Job is in here as well.
- 57:01Speaker 2: And Kobe Mayo I think is on the fringe here,
- 57:03Speaker 2: like he's one of those interesting ones that since he
- 57:06Speaker 2: really hasn't got his shot at the majors, like he's
- 57:08Speaker 2: not a big name in it, but he definitely could be.
- 57:12Speaker 2: And did you say, James, would I assume you did?
- 57:14Speaker 1: Yes?
- 57:15Speaker 2: Yeah, come, Like my brain's just not working. And maybe
- 57:18Speaker 2: the last one I'm kind of seen jump out here
- 57:19Speaker 2: is like Jacob Wilson for the athletics, I think is
- 57:22Speaker 2: as another sneaky, sneaky value in here. So it's a
- 57:25Speaker 2: it's a pretty strong list, but there are over one
- 57:28Speaker 2: hundred rookies in the in the list, and so I
- 57:32Speaker 2: think we listed maybe less than ten that we're really
- 57:35Speaker 2: excited about. Because for every Ben Rice and Dylan Cruz,
- 57:40Speaker 2: you definitely have your Sean Berks and your Reese Hines.
- 57:43Speaker 2: How is Reese Higin still a rookie? By the way,
- 57:46Speaker 2: when Tim Maddens like your Griffin co Nines, you know,
- 57:51Speaker 2: there's there's definitely some some ones out here that are
- 57:54Speaker 2: not gonna you know, rock the boat per se from
- 57:56Speaker 2: a value perspective, But you know, one and every five
- 58:00Speaker 2: cards rookie. So that's that's pretty standard for Top set
- 58:04Speaker 2: these days.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, I do think that this James
- 58:07Speaker 1: woodcard is going to be a pretty popular one when
- 58:10Speaker 1: it's all said and done, just given that it is
- 58:12Speaker 1: a very well squared up shot of his face and
- 58:15Speaker 1: kind of holding the bat over his shoulder. It's very
- 58:18Speaker 1: reminiscent of the I believe it's the Archives Showho Tani
- 58:24Speaker 1: in terms of the way that it's squared up and
- 58:27Speaker 1: the way that you just have a very straight on
- 58:30Speaker 1: pose of James Wood. And I do think that especially
- 58:33Speaker 1: given the colors here, with the red and the blue
- 58:36Speaker 1: on top of it all that like, it just really
- 58:39Speaker 1: looks fantastic. And the other layer here to using the
- 58:43Speaker 1: nineteen seventy six design is that when it was released
- 58:46Speaker 1: back in nineteen seventy six, Tops really leaned into the
- 58:49Speaker 1: bi centennial in terms of it being, you know, two
- 58:53Speaker 1: hundred years since seventeen seventy six, and so they've brought
- 58:57Speaker 1: that through into this set too, where there's a parallel
- 59:01Speaker 1: called the bi Centennial Parallel that just has nineteen seventy
- 59:06Speaker 1: six to seventeen seventy six printed on the front of it,
- 59:09Speaker 1: limited to two hundred as well as they've woven that
- 59:13Speaker 1: into some of the inserts and relics and autos on
- 59:18Speaker 1: top of everything else. So you'll see smatterings of hearkening
- 59:22Speaker 1: back to the bisentennial from nineteen seventy six throughout here.
- 59:27Speaker 1: But I'm gonna let you maybe take a little sip
- 59:29Speaker 1: of water because the podcast tradition is going to be
- 59:33Speaker 1: coming up here. It is a very limited number of
- 59:37Speaker 1: parallels to be able to get to this rainbow because
- 59:39Speaker 1: it is top hair, top heritage that I mean, that
- 59:42Speaker 1: is part of the reason why, like some of the
- 59:44Speaker 1: print runs on just the base are a little high,
- 59:47Speaker 1: is because there isn't also a lot of parallels out
- 59:50Speaker 1: here with these, so it is an easier rainbow to
- 59:53Speaker 1: put together. But there's still a short rainbow. And I'll
- 59:57Speaker 1: let you rattle off all the parallels that we've got here.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: We do that there's a little special thing with heritage here.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: What do you consider the true rainbow of heritage? Is
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: it that's true the paper or the chrome? Are they both?
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Because you do have a base variation and then you
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: do have a chrome variation. All five hundred cards with
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: their own parallels of the entire set here, So what's
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: the true rainbow. Here are we doubling up?
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: I think you do have to double up, so in
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: that case, it just actually expanded. So like that is okay,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Because I'm looking at this chrome variation checklist. I didn't
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: have it open before you brought that up. It is
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: much more expansive than it has been.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Yes, So let's jump in here. I think the base
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: and I'm going to try to separate the base the
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: base paper because rainbows with the inserts and the variations,
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: it gets a little bit interesting the parallels the base
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: because they're not all quite really base variations like short
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: prints is listed as a variation but really not considered that.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: So I'm gonna throw that one aside. But let's get
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: into it here. So you have the light purple bordered
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: and those are in hangar packs only. They are one
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: four to one hangar packs. Not on one of ones
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: has to meate in print runs. About seventeen hundred fifty
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: of those. You have the dark blue border, which there
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: are one and four in hobbies. About eleven hundred of
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: those yellow border only available in fat packs. About six
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: hundred of those dark green those are coming out of blasters.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: About four hundred and seventy five of those red borders
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: coming out of Megas four hundred and seventy five of those,
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: and if you listened the all five of those are
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: coming out of different products, different boxes, which is actually
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: very interesting. Then you start to get into a little
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: bit more standards here bisentennials, those are in all of
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: the different variations, with about two hundred of those color
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: of the year cars, there is about seventy five of
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: those black bordered, which is a sneaky, sneaky value for
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: folks out there. Fifty copies of those. Those ones are
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: incredibly collectible. Collectors love the black bordered heritage cards and
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: then flip stock five copies of those. Those are a
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: lot harder to find throughout there. So that's all your
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: kind of paper versions. If you may at your base
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: on the chrome variation here, similar similar thing going on here.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: You do have your refractors for those across all your products.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: But then you have in hobbies you have light blue sparkles,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: and blasters you have pink sparkles, in fat packs you
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: have aqua sparkles, and the hangars you have your burgundy sparkles,
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: and then megas you have your silver sparkles. So you
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: have all your different sparkle variations across all your different products.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: And then we get into what I would say the standards.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: You have blue borders out of one, fifty, green borders
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: out of ninety nine, black borders out of seventy five,
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: gold borders out of fifty, orange out of twenty five,
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: younised favor the red color match of our cardinals out
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: of five, which is never gonna get and then your
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: superfractors are across all of those as well, so you're
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: one on one super fractors. So the checklist is the
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: same between those. That's why we are combining them. But
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: it is a little interesting that you do have things
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: like black bordered fifty copies on your base kind of paper,
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: and then you have black borders of chrome that are
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: out of seventy five. So you gotta keep paying attention
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: here is you are chasing your rainbows.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and it that chrome list is just getting more
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: and more expansive that it almost does feel like you
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: wonder if they're gonna start pushing toys like a tops
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: heritage chrome just product overall that like they're almost there,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: considering they're making parallels of all of the cards and
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: all those rainbows that like you can put together an
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: entire set of just regular chrome tops heritage that like
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: it's short printed, but you.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Can do it.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: That it's not impossible because there's it looks like maybe
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: six hundred and ninety nine ish copies of each of
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: the base chrome but like times five hundred and it'll
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: take you a while. But it is fascinating to see
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: tops expand that further and further out because it does
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: also kind of veer away from what heritage has always been,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: which is kind of getting back to the days of
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: collecting in the seventies and just like not having to
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: worry about anything about some of the high number short
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: prints that there were just base cards. And so it's
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: kind of fascinating to see that the evolution of what
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: sports cards has become since the pandemic is pushing heritage
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: out with it in terms of parallel land and chasing
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: of one of ones to out the wazoo that like
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: you do wonder, I mean, I don't know if they've
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: had these discussions within tops, but like it is something
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: that like I think think about like philosophically of like
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: it's really getting away from the heart of what Tops
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: Heritage was.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you make a good point, Like I
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: would almost rather them literally introduce TOPS Heritage Chrome is
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: a separate product and stick with TOPS Heritage and just
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: cut the print runs in half or whatever the math
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: works out to be and kind of get the I
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: feel like you get double bang for your buck from
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: away from Tops, but hey, I'm not running the company.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: I do think it's a little sneaky value there, though,
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: to collect the entire set in something like the chrome,
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: because you can't imagine there's that many full sets of
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: all five hundred cards and a chrome variation out there,
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: and that would just be a really eye catching set
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: because Heritage is so nice on its own, very great pictures, imagery,
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: things like that, and then to have the whole thing
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: collected in chrome, which to your point, we don't really
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: know because they're not technically numbered, but we think there's
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: about seven hundred of each of those cards, and so
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: that's actually relatively limited. Still, to be able to put
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: together sets not going to be incredibly easy, and there's
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: not going to be many people out there that succeed
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: at doing that, so you have to think that, you know,
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: that'd be a pretty fun, fun project.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and I have faith in those that goes out
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: there because I know of people that do like the
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: flagship like green all and orange all foil like that
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: is there'll be somebody trying to do the heritage chrome
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: all of them. But let's get into some of those
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: variations that you talked about when you're running through the parallels,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: and we've hinted at them kind of here and there,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: because I think this is the other thing that really
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: makes heritage heritage is that it also harkens back to
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: the days of when in the especially eighties is when
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: this cropped up more of you know, the kind of
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: error print cards. Obviously the f face Billy Ripkin card
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: is the most infamous version of that, but then you
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: also kind of had it going off the rails the
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: other way of people looking at different dots on the
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: back of their cards and trying to determine and say
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: that they were short printed. That's a little bit of
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: what top Heritage is doing here in terms of it
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: is a more limited set of each ones because the
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: short prints are very limited. But we've got a couple
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: of other variations. We've got a couple of the classics
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: that have always kind of cropped up and heritage over
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: the years between image and nickname, so those aren't necessarily
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: terribly different. But we were discussing a little bit before
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: we started recording that there's two newer ones that are
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: certainly tough to find. So along with you touched on
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: the flip stocks that are out there, so keep your
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: eyes peeled for those. But the other ones are gonna
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: want to keep your eyes peeled for are the flipped
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: bat variations, where there's a bat on the back of
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: each of these cards, where there's a little bit of
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: like a line on it and it just is flipped
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: the other way and very very faintly in the side
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: it does say flipped as opposed to right above the
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: number on the back of the card, which is where
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: they used to list the variation numbers or the variation names,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: but now you have to really look at either the
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: serial codes or looking for that bat image flipped bat.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: And then the other is the cartoon variation, which it
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: took us a little bit to figure out, but it
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: is when you're looking at the nineteen seventy six design
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: and the bottom left typically of the card, there's a
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: little like cartoon to designate what the player's position is
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: and that is just a different version on the variation.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: So what do you think about these couple of new
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: ones between the flip bat and the cartoon image variation.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, if I've picked one, I think the
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: cartoon one is more interesting because it's on the front
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: of the card. You can see it. The flips bat
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: is pretty pretty gushroom subtle. And this goes by baseball
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: nerdism here is that it is truly a Louisville slugger bat.
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: That is, there's a little bit of a half semi
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: circle that is pointing one way versus the other, and
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: that is working back to a Lousville slugger bat that
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: has a little oval emblem on it, and it's just
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: facing the other way. The thing that I'm actually a
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: little bit more intrigued with is you and I were
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: kind of talking, is the flip bat does say flipped
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: on the back, but I don't think the other variations
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: actually do, which is used to be the way Heritage
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: used to do things Like let's go back like five
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: seven years ago, Heritage would mix everything together. They wouldn't
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: flip the car backwards in the back. So you knew
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: you had a hit, and you almost like had to
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: rip the heritage box twice because you'd have to go
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: through everything. Then you have to go through it a
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: second time, looking at the serial numbers on the back
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: to see if you got anything unique, because these are subtle,
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: like the flip bat is very subtle, even the cartoon variations,
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: Like you know, all the cards have a cartoon player
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: on them, and it's just like the outfielder is just
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: a different position of the outfielder catching, and it's it's subtle.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: It's very subtle, and so these can easily be missed,
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: Like these are the kind of things you're at a
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: card show or near your shopping through, Like you have
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: to like really look at them closely, and if you
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: just have one, like if you pull out a card
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: and it has a cartoon variation on it, unless you
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: are like a kin to remembering what the cartoon looks like,
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: even if you go back and look at the serial number,
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: it is hard hard to find those out. And I,
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: you know, yes, I think they're gonna be turned around
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: this year, and I have not seen a box open.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: I don't open myself. I think they'll be turned around
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: in the pack. So people will be able to see them.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: But it's not uncommon for tops to accidentally turn something
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: around in the pack and you look at this and
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: like I just pulled out like Jose the Clerk's like
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: base card and it's turned around and it's nothing. And
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: so you won't be surprised to see people going through
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: these packs missing something and they're ending up in dollar
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: bins and stuff like that. So yeah, I'm a little
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: more excited about the cartoon. I always love the nicknames.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: I think those are probably the coolest of all the variations,
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: and players love those, especially when they're kind of trying
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: to make up nicknames to a degree because the players
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: don't have a typically a full nickname. So I actually
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: I haven't looked yet because you and I one of
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: our favorite nickname players that we've nicknamed has a nickname
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: Variasian Card, and that is Spencer Arraghetty, and so I
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: I I'm not sure. I'm gonna have to look it
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: up here as as we go, because I can also
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: spell Arraghetty on the fly.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: What I know you're you're a battery hitter or a
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: battery writer.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: So the question for you, if you haven't looked it up.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: What do you think his nickname is on his heritage card?
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Well, I mean I think it probably is Spaghetti. I'm
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: looking at his Baseball reference page. It's his official nickname
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: on it.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Spaghetti. That's awesome, Spaghetti, arraghetty and so literally I love it.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: It's it's just it's a picture of Spencer Ragedy, just
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: a spaghetti on the card.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: That's gonna be a popular one.
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: I can tell you that there's only one on eBay
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: so far, and it's uh, it's a nice little auction.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: So that's it up to. Oh, it literally started like
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: half an hour ago.
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: You typing in like a five dollars bid for fun.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: No, I'm actually going to look to see if anything
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: sold because I'm just I'm just I'm unamored by just
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: these are the intricacies of heritage to make it so fun. Nope,
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: none sold. So this is gonna be the setting the
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: market for Spencer Spaghetti Orraghetty to see what happens. So
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: that's a chase card for sure.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Good find. Okay, let's get into discussion of some of
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: the inserts and autos. Like I said, the relic checklist
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: here is pretty robust and it's always called the Clubhouse collection.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: I do think that the design of them has always
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: been pretty solid for TOPS Heritage, but nothing really fascinating there,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: I think in terms of what Heritage has offered in
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: the past for those relics and just kind of you
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: copy and pasted with a little bit of like the
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: nineteen seventy six design, a little bit of like the
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: same sort of patches and bats, and they do have
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: dual relics that have are mixing it up a little bit,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: but it does feel a little bit of like they're
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: just kind of rehashing a lot of the past there
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: with the relics. Overall, certainly great additions for all those
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: PCs out there in terms of like trying to get
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: some of your smaller players and round out those team collections.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: But I really do want to focus on the autos
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: because they are the big chase cards here within TOPS
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: Heritage and especially like what people are looking for. Part
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: of the reason people are ripping so much volume is
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: because the cut signature checklists are always incredible for Heritage.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: And that's if you're not familiar with what a cut
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: signature is is it's a one of one card where
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: typically it is of a deceased person and they've found
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: an autograph on either like a picture or just a
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: piece of paper or a check. Lots of times that's
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: canceled like past check that they've taken the auto, cut
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: it out and put it into a card. So from
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: the baseball side, you've got Brooks, Robinson, Hank Aaron, Catfish, Hunter,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Lou Brock, Phil Nicro, Tom sever Willie Stargel, Yogi Berra.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: You've got some celebrity ones. So you've got all these
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: have been one of the ones I've talked about. You've
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: got Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Jimmy Carter. But the big
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: ones that I think everyone's going to be chasing are
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: America themed. There's four one of One's huge historical autographs here.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: You've got Frederick Douglas, George Washington, John Hancock, Teddy Roosevelt.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: So those are going to be like the creme de
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: la creme of what you're looking for in these autographs.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: But you've also got the return of the real one
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: autographs which appeared in Flagship for the first time this year,
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: which is they're always on card, they're not stickred, and
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: on top of everything else, you've also got a little
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: bit of variation from they took Jim Palmer cards from
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: back in nineteen seventy six, themselves, got them out of circulation,
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: had Jim Palmer sign them, and those are in the
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: product as well. So any of these autographs really stand
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: out to you more than anything else, or maybe even
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: one of the checklists that I haven't talked about, because
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: there's a few other ones that are including Hall of Famers,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: rookies and just lots of stars, lots of lots of
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: fantastic autos out there.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Yeah, So I think that the two that I want
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: to call out would be the ones with all of
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: your Hall of Famers that you can you can get
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: in there, so like you have your like Rod Carews
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: and you know, Nolan Ryan, like Reggie Jackson, and what's
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: great about these there's some bi centennial relics, and I
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: think that they even have a few and just kind
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: of the like relic autographs where you've like a Dave
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: Winfield and Johnny Bench things like that. Just in the
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: real one checklist where you have a number of the
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: Hearken Back, Sparky Lyle, Tony Perez, Fergie Jenks, and George Foster,
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: like there's all kinds of guys like that. What's great
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: about these is that these are on card autos, and
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: so that's just hard to find. You don't see these
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: guys signing almost any other products, and let alone being
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: on card auto, so that that's really great. The one
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: that I am most excited about, though, and I can't
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: explain it, so hopefully you can back me on this
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: is probably the most attractive but available auto in Heritage
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: is the real one red autos. They are I think
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: this out of seventy six. They're available in every different pack.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: There is a one hundred and five different one of them.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: But it is like it jumps out of the page.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: Nobody wants to give those things up, and especially from
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: a rookie perspective, like they are probably one of the
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: most collectible autos and they one hundred percent rival you know,
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: chrome Bass Flagship anything like that. The red Ink autos
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: from Heritage are I would argue, one of the most
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: collectible rookie autos of the entire year, uh for rookies,
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: because it pops, it's on card, and usually it's a
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: great design that you can have and those things grade well,
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: Like there's so much about that that that just pops
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: and like, I can't explain the collectibility on those. People
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: go crazy from them, and like they are hard to
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: I have, Like I don't think I even have one
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: of these. I've tried to get one of my PC
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: players and they are just not available. When they come available,
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: they are ricey. So back me up on this. You
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: gotta love the Red one Red Ink autos, right.
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah, And I mean I think the other factor
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: people love is the hand numbering on them. So I
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: think the hand numbering is usually done by like a
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: TOPS representative, but they are hand numbered, so it just
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: kind of adds that extra layer of like fun and
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: fascination where there is something very mechanical and robotic about
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: the little stamped on numberings that all the other cards
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: come with. That it's fun to see hand numbered cards.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: You do see that show up in the Clubhouse Collection
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: relics as well, So that is like another factor of
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: like what makes those heritage relics a little bit of
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: a grade above of some of the other products is
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: that you can get hand numbered relics in this product too. Yeah,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: and especially the Red one autos. It does make sense,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: especially with your PC cardinals any team that has read
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: in their base, the Red Sox, the Phillies, the Angels,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: they're hot commodities that like it just takes it to
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: another level and we haven't even talked about like this.
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: You're gonna have Rokie Sasaki autos in this as well,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: and he does have real one autos, so those are
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: going to be on card Roki Sasaki autographs, which I
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: think are gonna probably be relatively rare. You're gonna see
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: a lot of Rokiye Susaki sticker autos, So that's gonna
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: be another one of these major chase cards of just
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: even hitting a base of that Rokye Susaki. Nice thing
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: is it'll be in blue on the base, but even
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: but a red ink on that whoof that's gonna go
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: for quite a pretty penny. All right, Let's get into
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: some of the inserts just because like we got to
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: touch on them. They're there, and a lot of them
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: are nineteen seventy six based. You've got nineteen seventy six
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: player icons from the seventy six season. You've got some
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: of the like just nineteen seventy six redefined checklist, which
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: is gonna be I think a really cool one in
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: terms of like a mix of former players and current players.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Then you've got the classic through the years checklist and
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: notable Americans to go with the seventeen seventy six by
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: centennial themes. So I wouldn't be surprised to see some
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: of those be all ap popular too. In terms of
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: like some of the parallels that might crop up in
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: that space, You've got a pretty long checklist actually, of
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: one hundred famous Americans. It does feel like sometimes some
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: of these jokey or sets kind of have a life
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: of their own. We've talked about over the years of
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: the like Allen and Ginter egg card or the Bitcoin card,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: that you can never know when some of these might
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: just kind of pop out of nowhere and be popular.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: And then the other one that we haven't touched on
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: is the classic kind of I don't know if they're
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: called buybacks or what they are, but when they do
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: take the nineteen seventy six cards, stamp them with the
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: twenty twenty five stamp, and then put them back into
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: the product. They obviously did that with the autos on
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: Jim Palmer, but they also do it with all of
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: the cards from nineteen seventy six, So those are I
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: think fantastic collectibles to be able to, especially if you
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: have been a longtime collector, to round out your collection
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: of saying, if you've got like a nineteen seventy six
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: Bob Gibson Gang, one of these buybacked Bob Gibson's, it
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: just kind of really rounds things out. And to think
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: about the history of like where that card has been
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: through to get to that pack, it just really blows
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: my mind. Any of the other inserts stand up to.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: You, I think you hit the main ones, and the one
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: I do want to double down on is the buybacks.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: I think that is a really underappreciated portion of this
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: product because it really is tops going and getting like
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: full sets of the seventy six design here, stamping them
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: and redistribut them as box hoppers within there, so you're
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: getting maybe one every few hobby boxes something like that.
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: And a few years ago I actually pulled one of
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: those in a break, which not advocating for breaks, probably
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: not the wisest life decisions I've made, but it's hard
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: to avoid it when you're collecting your PC team. I
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: pulled Bob Gibson buy back card and I went on
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: a quest to figure out how many are actually printed,
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: and you can't really truly find out, but if there's
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: truly a card of every player from that like six
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: hundred cards set from back in the seventies, and you
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: look at the print run of the sets, at least
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: what I had a few years ago, probably a little
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: bit more, they're like they only have like thirty or
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: forty of those for each player, and I think they're
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: they're not numbered for very underappreciated. And I actually sent
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: mine off to PSA just to see because literally I
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: wanted to see what they would do with it, because
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: it's a vintage card, a current product, and I just
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: I wanted to see how they would grade it, how
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: they would treat it like and they was so they
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: were so Guy Sturn confused because like who's grading these
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: random buyback cards? And so they're not in a great
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: condition usually four I was actually thrilled, but but yeah,
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: they're usually yeah, they're beat up, like it's it's they
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: literally just bottom and gride sale. I think YE called
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: it a day, So yeah, great, great, great little nuggets there.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: Whenever I see those buybacks laying around out for you know,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: the dollar bins things like that. I always pick them
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: up because that you hit so many different collectors with those.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: You hit your vintage guys, you hit your modern guys,
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: you hit your h you know, kind of crossover unique
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: card guys, you get your rare card guys. Like you
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: got all that in there. So I absolutely absolutely love
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: the buybacks. It's it's way better than like the jumbo
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: jumbo cards or something like that you get as as
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: box loaders.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: Yes, I totally agree, and it is like it's something
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: that you can keep, and like I said, it's just
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: such a great piece of history that I think that
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: as time goes on, those things will kind of accrue
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: more value because they just will become rarer and rarer,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: especially given eventually like TOPS has to retread some of
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: these designs and thoughts for heritage again. So like it's
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: gonna be you know, we are in nineteen seventy six,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: Like we'll see how far if they want to push
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: this back out of the seventies and into the eighties.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: So like if it come back again and do more
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: seventy six buybacks in ten more years or whatever, you're
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: just narrowing the population out there of nineteen seventy six cards.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: That's an interesting point I do. I do wonder, like,
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: at what point does heritage run its course? And we're
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: like now looking at like cards from the nineties, and
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: we're like, is that really what the heritage? Like, the
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: heritage is based on vintage? Like at some point gotta
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: flip it back. I don't know. I don't know how
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: I'm gonna feel about that.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: Yes, we will ponder that question over the next week
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: while we wrap it up here. I think that's a
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: great spot because we'll let everybody think about that and
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: maybe even send in some of your thoughts on what
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: TOPS can be doing in the future. I also already
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: realize that they've obscured a little bit that with TOPS
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: archives through the years, but we'll set that aside for
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: a discussion at another time. You can email us at
