- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to the Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we are in Psalm 140. Psalm 140 and the inscription
- 0:22for this Psalm says for the choir director a Psalm of David.
- 0:26And this Psalm is another one of the ones where David is asking
- 0:30for the Lord's help and deliverance and sustaining as he
- 0:33has people that want to attack him and that want to kill him.
- 0:37And though hopefully you today are not under physical attack
- 0:42and you won't have to pray the exact prayer that David prayed.
- 0:45All of us have our spiritual enemy, Satan, who is wandering
- 0:49about like a roaring lion seeking who he can devour.
- 0:53And so into our spiritual battle we can pray this same prayer of
- 0:58deliverance that David prayed. He says, rescue me, Yahweh, from
- 1:02evil men. Keep me safe from violent men
- 1:05who plan evil in their hearts. They stir up wars all day long.
- 1:11They make their tongues as sharp as a snake's bite.
- 1:14Viper's venom is under their lips.
- 1:17Sailor, that means pause. Think about it.
- 1:21Protect me Yahweh, from the power of the wicked.
- 1:24Keep me safe from violent men who plan to make me stumble.
- 1:28The proud hide A trap with ropes for me.
- 1:31They spread a net along the path and set snares for me.
- 1:36I say to Yahweh, you are my God. Listen Yahweh, to my cry for
- 1:40help. Yahweh, my Lord, my strong
- 1:44Savior, you shield my head on the day of battle.
- 1:49Yahweh, do not grant the desires of the wicked.
- 1:52Do not let them achieve their goals, otherwise they will
- 1:55become proud. Sailor, when those who surround
- 1:59me rise up, may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm them.
- 2:03Let hot coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the
- 2:06fire, into the abyss, never again to rise.
- 2:10Do not let a slanderer stay in the land.
- 2:13Let evil relentlessly hunt down a violent man.
- 2:17I know that Yahweh upholds the just cause of the poor.
- 2:21Justice for the needy. Surely the righteous will praise
- 2:25your name. The upright will live in your
- 2:29presence. Man, this is an interesting
- 2:33Psalm. Frankly, as I think about our
- 2:39world, as I think about world leaders and the various
- 2:46geopolitical concerns and things that happened, this is a very
- 2:51applicable Psalm even to today, that we can ask for the Lord to
- 2:55intervene on the behalf of our nation.
- 2:58We can ask for him to intervene even in our own lives.
- 3:02I I think of friends that I have that have served even within the
- 3:06armed forces people even that I know of in our church that have
- 3:11family members right now in the armed forces and my heart goes
- 3:15out with an echo of this cry to go all right Lord, you know all
- 3:20of the evil in the world. You see every single sin act of
- 3:25injustice and wickedness. God, would you act in accordance
- 3:31with what your word has here, because I know that you are
- 3:35good. Let's look first at verses one
- 3:37through three. He says, rescue me Yahweh from
- 3:40evil men, keep me safe from violent men who plan evil in
- 3:46their hearts. Unfortunately, violence and evil
- 3:52oppression is regular within our world.
- 3:56And you can think of most people are very scared today to even be
- 4:01out in public, out walking, even in streets.
- 4:05You know, we're very close to Baltimore here.
- 4:08And I know many people that would be fearful as a result of
- 4:12violent people who might oppress them on the way that they might
- 4:16get robbed just from walking down the street.
- 4:20And here this is David's prayer is God.
- 4:23Would you help to rescue me from those that want to do physical
- 4:28harm? Can I encourage maybe the
- 4:31parents that are listening or watching have a care that yes,
- 4:38self-defense is a good and a wonderful thing?
- 4:40The man writing this Psalm is David, who is not in any sense a
- 4:45pacifist. But make sure that as you
- 4:49instill desires for, you know, self-defense and protection of
- 4:55of the innocent or the weak into your kids, that you also make it
- 5:00abundantly clear that it is horribly wrong to use violence,
- 5:06to use coercive means in order to get anyone to do anything.
- 5:11It's a horrible thing to rob someone.
- 5:13It's a horrible thing to beat up someone.
- 5:17It's a horrible thing, of course, to commit assault in any
- 5:22way, especially through physically coercive means.
- 5:26And so may we as the people of God say we are not going to be
- 5:29violent people. There should never be a
- 5:32Christian husband or a Christian wife that is physically abusive
- 5:37to their spouse. That would be reprehensible to
- 5:40the name and character and reputation of Jesus Christ.
- 5:43If we purport ourselves to be Christians, then may we be
- 5:47gentle, peaceable. May we not be known as a violent
- 5:51person. Now flip side of that is we do
- 5:55need strong individuals and we need strong men that will be
- 5:59willing to step up when the time is right to care for their
- 6:04family, to care for their kids, to care for someone that they
- 6:07see being abused or mistreated. Because if the only people that
- 6:13have any strength or any capability to do harm are those
- 6:17that are evil, well, you're in a really, really bad position and
- 6:20there is no one to rescue. And so that is a really hard
- 6:25thing to hold in tandem. But what it is, is self-control.
- 6:28To say I could react in strength and oppression, but I choose to
- 6:35be gentle. I choose the older English word
- 6:38for it would be meekness, which isn't weakness.
- 6:41Meekness is strength under control.
- 6:44I have the capability to do something, but I'm not going to
- 6:47do it because I am in control of my emotions and my words and my
- 6:52actions. So that that's from that section
- 6:56on violence and violence should always be an absolute last
- 7:03resort when every other venue has has been attempted that we
- 7:09don't rush into violent interaction with someone at any
- 7:14point. But there will be times.
- 7:15And I'm really thankful for even stories that I'm able to read of
- 7:18guys that step in when a woman is being mugged or robbed.
- 7:23And that strong man intervening used his strength in a good way
- 7:28for a good purpose in the way that God would intend to happen.
- 7:33And you can even think about Jesus as the the story is given
- 7:38of the woman caught in adultery is thrown before him.
- 7:42And the Pharisees trying to entrap Jesus, they're like,
- 7:45listen, Moses said that if a woman is caught in adultery, she
- 7:51should be stoned. But what do you say?
- 7:53They want to make him look either really harsh because he
- 7:57agrees with what Moses says, or if he goes against what Moses
- 8:01says, then they can, you know, say, oh, he's a, he's a law
- 8:05breaker. He denies, you know, he denies
- 8:08the Torah. And Jesus steps in and with his
- 8:12words, you know, there's an angry mob wanting to stone her.
- 8:17And yet he goes, all right, the one that is without sin among
- 8:21you needs to throw the first stone.
- 8:23And they go, oh, Jesus, they're not denying the Torah.
- 8:28We because of our sin deserve death, but all of us deserve
- 8:35death and that's the point Jesus is making is going listen, God's
- 8:39been gracious to you. God hasn't aired out your sins
- 8:42in front of the entire world yet.
- 8:44And so you need to have grace for others that you want for
- 8:49yourself and that you are currently experiencing for
- 8:52yourself. And so Jesus there uses words
- 8:55and and questions and, and things to be able to defuse a
- 8:59really violent scary time. And so there are times when you
- 9:04need to step in physically, times when you don't need to.
- 9:07I got to be honest with you guys.
- 9:08I don't know why the Lord kind of had me take a little bit of
- 9:11that detour route, but maybe someone needs to hear that
- 9:15today. And I hope that that would be
- 9:17something that you follow the end of verse 2 says they stir up
- 9:21wars all day long. A war monger, someone who is
- 9:25eagerly searching for armed conflict with another group,
- 9:31another nation, is not a good person.
- 9:34That is a bad person. If you are seeking out war, not
- 9:37are you defending yourself. If you are seeking out war and
- 9:41armed conflict with others, you are in the wrong.
- 9:45Let the readers understand. Verse #3 They make their tongues
- 9:49as sharp as a snake's bite. Viper's venom is under their
- 9:53lips. They say the words that they are
- 9:55using. It's snake like, if you will.
- 9:58They have poisonous words. That the words that evil people
- 10:03speak are intended to do harm, to deride, to stir up strife.
- 10:08Let's not be those kinds of people.
- 10:10Let let's have our words be words like the words of Jesus.
- 10:13The wonderful words of life is what Peter calls them in John 6.
- 10:19Then in verses four and five. Protect me Yahweh, from the
- 10:23power of the wicked. Keep me safe from violent men
- 10:26who plan to make me stumble. The proud hide A trap with ropes
- 10:30for me. They spread a net along the path
- 10:32and set snares for me. God, would you deliver me from
- 10:36the evil conniving of wicked people.
- 10:41Man, I, I hope, I dearly hope that all of those that are
- 10:45listening to or watching this, I hope that you don't have people
- 10:49in your life that are actually like this, that are setting
- 10:52traps for you. But goodness if I don't know
- 10:55that our souls enemy, Satan is the one that is constantly
- 11:00setting traps for our souls. He is the one that lays
- 11:04temptations in front of us. Either that we would defy God
- 11:08and embrace sin, or that we would be so broken down with the
- 11:14trials of life that we would give up on God and we would
- 11:17reject worshipping him or loving Him.
- 11:20And I think that we need to pray this as well.
- 11:23God, even as Jesus says in the Lord's Prayer, don't lead us
- 11:29into temptation, but deliver us from the evil. 1 And may we pray
- 11:34that along here with David, both of human enemies, if you happen
- 11:39to have some of those. I don't know if I'm doing
- 11:42something right or doing something wrong, but I do not
- 11:44have many. I don't have many human enemies.
- 11:47I don't believe. If you're a human enemy, drop it
- 11:50in the chat. That's a bit of Gen.
- 11:53Z humor for some of my older listeners versus 6 through 8 or
- 11:59the next section. I say to Yahweh, You are my God.
- 12:03Like you're the one I'm worshipping.
- 12:05You're the one I'm following. Yes, I have enemies, Yes I have
- 12:07people trying to harm me, but that's not distracting me from
- 12:11what is most true and wonderful in my life, which is the person
- 12:17and work of God. So he says, I say to Yahweh, you
- 12:19are my God. Listen Yahweh, to my cry for
- 12:22help. And when we cry to the Lord for
- 12:24help, He does hear us. Now He might deliver us from the
- 12:27situation, He might deliver us through the situation.
- 12:32And in either case, God is good and He hears us and He cares
- 12:36about us. Just know if God doesn't remove
- 12:39the situation from you, that he will deliver you through the
- 12:44situation and He will empower you.
- 12:46He will give you just enough grace and peace to be able to
- 12:50make it through. And so at that point, like, just
- 12:54rely on Him to go, all right, I got no idea how you're going to
- 12:56do this, but I will trust you and I will believe in your good
- 13:00plans for me. Verse #7 Yahweh, my Lord, my
- 13:06strong Savior, you shield my head on the day of battle.
- 13:09He says, God, you're my helmet. You're the thing keeping me from
- 13:13getting whacked in the head, from getting shot in the head.
- 13:16Lord, you protect me. And I think of what Paul tells
- 13:19us in Ephesians 6 about the armor of God.
- 13:23And you have the helmet of salvation, that God, my Savior,
- 13:26is the shield on my head in the day of battle.
- 13:30And when we go to war against Satan, we can trust that God has
- 13:34us safe and secure. That we are safe, not because
- 13:38we're so great, not because we put together a wonderful helmet
- 13:42or defense, but because because the Lord is our shield on our
- 13:46head on the day of battle. He is the helmet of our
- 13:49salvation through what Jesus accomplished.
- 13:51Verse #8 Yahweh. Do not grant the desires of the
- 13:54wicked. Do not let them achieve their
- 13:57goals, otherwise they will become proud.
- 14:02Man, I think about this. Certainly we can pray it for
- 14:05wicked people, you know, in our lives, in our, you know, area,
- 14:11in our nation, in our world, we can say God don't grant the
- 14:13desires of the wicked. But I think about my life that
- 14:17sometimes I want things that maybe aren't good for me and
- 14:22maybe I don't know that they're not good for me because I just
- 14:24selfishly go, man, I really want this.
- 14:26Like right now. I'll just level with you guys.
- 14:30It's just us friends on the podcast right now.
- 14:34My wife has been able to be a blessing to some people in our
- 14:39church and been able to give some rides to kids and it's been
- 14:44a wonderful joy for her. She's been able to be a blessing
- 14:48to people that need it. But because I am not like within
- 14:53walking distance of the church sometimes like the pickup and
- 14:58drop offs and schedules and things gets a little nutso.
- 15:03Like it gets a little crazy trying to do that with with me
- 15:07coming to work. And so we've been praying like,
- 15:10Hey, God, if it's your will, would you guide us to a vehicle,
- 15:15like a second vehicle? And I don't need, you know, a
- 15:18BMWI don't need a Ducati. Like I just need something to be
- 15:23able to make, you know, this 5 minute drive over here to the
- 15:27church. And so we've been praying like,
- 15:29hey, Lord, if it's your will, like would you, would you make
- 15:32this happen? Would you open some doors?
- 15:34Would you guide? And it's not something that
- 15:37we're like, oh man, we need this immediately.
- 15:39But even as I read this verse, I want to be careful to go, OK,
- 15:42God, am I asking for something that is not within your will?
- 15:48Because God, if it's not in your will, if it's something that's
- 15:51like selfish on my part, then God, I don't want what you don't
- 15:57want for me. Don't give me wicked if you
- 16:00will. Don't give me my desires if my
- 16:02desires or if my heart is wicked and asking for it because I
- 16:06don't want to be proud. I want to be humble.
- 16:08I want to with an open hand, say God, I think this is what I need
- 16:13right now, but you know better than me, and so would you give
- 16:16me what I actually need. Keep me humble as I pray to you.
- 16:20Don't grant me the desires of my heart if those desires are
- 16:23wicked, or if my heart is wicked, or if it would make me
- 16:26proud as a result of me getting whatever I'm wanting instead.
- 16:30God give me what is good versus 9 through 11 when those who
- 16:35surround me rise up. May the trouble their lips cause
- 16:38overwhelm them. It's that kind of boomerang
- 16:40effect that I've talked about 1000 times here in the Psalms.
- 16:44May what they have done come back on them.
- 16:47Verse #10 let hot coals fall on them.
- 16:49This is kind of a battle imagery.
- 16:51You would throw some hot coals from off of like the wall
- 16:57surrounding a city and you know, you have troops that are trying
- 17:01to get to the wall, trying to breakthrough it, trying to climb
- 17:04it. And so you throw hot coals onto
- 17:07this enemy. Verse 10, he says let them be
- 17:10thrown into the fire, into the abyss, never again to rise.
- 17:15So they're kind of two pictures of judgment that Scripture uses
- 17:19over and over again. It's water and it's fire.
- 17:24So you can think even in the Garden of Eden and in the
- 17:30creation accounts starts off with there is darkness over the
- 17:34face of the deep. It's the abyss, the the pit,
- 17:38vast water and there's just nothing living on planet Earth.
- 17:43And then in the Garden of Eden, after Adam and Eve are kicked
- 17:47out, you have a cherubim that's placed there with a flaming like
- 17:51twirling sword. And I'm sure if I remembered
- 17:55correctly all the stuff I've read and learned, I'd be able to
- 17:58tell you more information about that.
- 17:59But there's a fiery sword in Genesis 3, and there's the deep
- 18:04abyss when there is no life in Genesis 1.
- 18:08Then you have the flood that occurs in Genesis 6 through 8,
- 18:14which is, you know, the the water comes and all of mankind
- 18:20has been so wicked before God, and both the spiritual beings
- 18:25and the physical beings have rebelled against God.
- 18:30And so God brings a flood and wipes out everything except for
- 18:33Noah and his family and all of the animals that they have on
- 18:37the ark. And then you Fast forward to
- 18:40Sodom and Gomorrah and you have the fire and brimstone that
- 18:44falls from the heaven there as you have a wicked cities that
- 18:50are abusive and assaulting, you know, violent men like we would
- 18:55read here. And they experience the judgment
- 18:58of fire. And so fire and water is always
- 19:02there. They are the two big pictures of
- 19:04judgment within Scripture. And so here David says, let them
- 19:09be thrown into the fire. OK, that's judgment into the
- 19:12abyss. Never again to rise into this
- 19:15deep watery grave. May they be totally judged.
- 19:20I tremble to think about praying this prayer other than with
- 19:26Satan, because I can rejoice that he's going to be thrown
- 19:29into the pit. He's going to be tossed into the
- 19:30lake of fire and be tortured forever and ever because of his
- 19:35wickedness and the evil that he put forth into the world on to
- 19:40so many people. And Satan will get his.
- 19:43And I rejoice to be able to see that day.
- 19:46And certainly as we think about human history, there might be
- 19:49people that come up into our mind that we go, yeah, they
- 19:53definitely kind of, you know, earn that place of judgment that
- 19:57they will get what is coming to them.
- 20:01But I also think we need to have a heart for those that are still
- 20:04living that we would want them to experience forgiveness and
- 20:09transformation through Jesus Christ.
- 20:12That we know God is just. And so if people reject the the
- 20:17goodness of God in a relationship with Christ, then
- 20:22certainly the only thing that is left is the choice is between
- 20:26heaven and hell. It's between life and death.
- 20:29And if you reject life, all that's left for you is death.
- 20:34But may we pray that people would turn to Christ.
- 20:37We should never rejoice that anyone would go into eternity
- 20:43without having a relationship with Jesus.
- 20:47Verse #11 He says do not let a slanderer stay in the land.
- 20:51Let evil relentlessly hunt down a violent man.
- 20:55May those that are wicked, may those that spread gossip and
- 20:59slander and talk I'll of others. May they have no place in a
- 21:02godly location in the godly nation, or even as we think
- 21:06today in a godly church. May no wicked people, may no
- 21:10gossips, may no slanderers have any place within our churches.
- 21:15Verses 12 and 13 as we end, I know that Yahweh upholds the
- 21:19just cause of the poor, justice for the needy.
- 21:22Surely the righteous will praise your name, the upright will live
- 21:27in your presence. David here says God cares about
- 21:30those that do not have financial means.
- 21:33God cares about those that are being harmed by others because
- 21:39they are rich and powerful enough to do it.
- 21:42And man, I have friends even here at my church that have gone
- 21:46through crazy stuff that I can certainly echo this prayer of
- 21:50God. You know them, you know their
- 21:52hearts, you know how hard they've worked.
- 21:54You know the love that they have for you and for your people.
- 21:57And God, you see how they're being mistreated by people just
- 22:00because those people have drastically more financial
- 22:04means. And so God, would you bring
- 22:06those rich, wicked people down? And Lord, would you continue to
- 22:11care for and exalt and provide for the needs of your people?
- 22:15And that's something that we can echo here from the language of
- 22:19Scripture. God, uphold the just cause of
- 22:21the poor, give justice for the needy.
- 22:25Well, honestly, this episode was all over the place.
- 22:29I hope some of it was an encouragement to you.
- 22:31But always, always love getting to think through what does it
- 22:37mean for us as Christians to interact with the Old Testament?
- 22:41What do we think about it in light of Jesus?
- 22:44What do we think about it in light of eternity and what Jesus
- 22:48has told us the end of days will be like and what judgment day
- 22:51will be like. And so I hope that even thinking
- 22:53through some of that was a blessing to you.
- 22:55Have a wonderful day. See you next episode.
