- 0:28Hey, you guys, welcome to episode 159 of the shift
- 0:31podcast. I'm titling this one strengths
- 0:34and weaknesses. So I don't know if I told this
- 0:37last week on the podcast, but I had to put down our dog of just
- 0:43we actually, we looked back, he was a lot younger than we
- 0:45thought. He was about 7 1/2 years old.
- 0:47He had mouth cancer and he it progressed really quickly.
- 0:54He was an Italian mastiff and we had to put him down about two
- 0:57weeks ago and since then we got a puppy.
- 1:00We picked him up yesterday. I told my friends and family we
- 1:06got him for all the wrong reasons.
- 1:07He's going to fill the hole in our heart.
- 1:10But while we know that we can't replace our other dog, I wanted
- 1:13to mention him. His name is Bear.
- 1:15He's half King Corso, half Great Pyrenees because he is currently
- 1:19sitting underneath my desk, underneath my feet, storing.
- 1:23So I don't know if you can hear him, but this is his new
- 1:27favorite place and he wants to be with me.
- 1:29So I'm going to just let him record the podcast with me this
- 1:31week. I wanted to talk about strengths
- 1:35and weaknesses this week. This is a topic that we kind of
- 1:38touched on inside the Flight Prep Academy and it's something
- 1:42that I talk about in my life coaching world a lot to my
- 1:46clients and inside my programs. So I want to talk about just the
- 1:52concept of loving your strengths and loving your weaknesses.
- 1:58I let's talk about just being able to.
- 2:03I think it's equally hard. I think it's equally hard to
- 2:06love your strengths because some people don't want to talk about
- 2:10what they're confident in. Sometimes people have a little
- 2:12bit of a success intolerance of saying, hey, I'm really good at
- 2:16this. Or someone tells them, hey,
- 2:18you're doing a really good job at that.
- 2:20And they start to spiral because they don't, they can't accept a
- 2:24compliment because they feel like they maybe don't want to be
- 2:28too cocky or overly confident or lean into it because it's scary
- 2:32to be really good at something. And so I think it's can equally
- 2:36be scary to love your strengths and equally be scary to love
- 2:39your weaknesses. But I'm going to give you my
- 2:40take on strengths and weaknesses and what has really helped me
- 2:44love both of those and say them out loud.
- 2:48And so when it comes to strength, I'm going to share
- 2:50with you some personal things that I feel like I'm really good
- 2:53at and some things that I'm really weak at.
- 2:55So some of my personal strengths are really being able to speak
- 2:58up. If you know me, you always know
- 3:00how I feel. I say exactly what's on my mind
- 3:03and I will be forthright about it and I maybe will say it in
- 3:10awkward moments, but you always know what I'm thinking and I'm
- 3:13willing to say the hard thing. As a flight nurse, this was
- 3:18sometimes good and sometimes bad, but I was all, I would
- 3:20always speak up in what I needed or what I thought and I wasn't
- 3:25afraid to get pushed back from that.
- 3:26So I I really do consider this one of my strengths.
- 3:29I think a lot of people, it makes them uncomfortable to say
- 3:32the hard thing. I know.
- 3:33And I'm willing to say the hard thing.
- 3:35I'm willing to ask the hard questions.
- 3:37So I really consider this a strength of mine.
- 3:42I also think that I'm equally really good at delegating,
- 3:47especially in really high pressurized moments or in things
- 3:50where we have a big thing to get done.
- 3:53I'm really good at saying, hey, can you help me with this and
- 3:57asking for help? I think that came with time.
- 4:00I think like, as I really started out as a nurse, I felt
- 4:03kind of shameful to ask for help.
- 4:05But you realize really quickly that asking for help is a really
- 4:09great quality. You cannot do everything on your
- 4:11own. And equally, I do that in my
- 4:13family life and my personal life, too.
- 4:16We are getting ready to throw a graduation party for my twins
- 4:19who are seniors. That's going to be Saturday.
- 4:21And then we're throwing a homecoming party for my son, who
- 4:23just got back from Brazil for two years, on the following day.
- 4:26And we're expecting 150 to 200 people.
- 4:29And lots of people have asked me if I need help with anything.
- 4:33And every single person who has asked me, I have taken them up
- 4:36on it, whether it's making cookies or helping me blow up
- 4:38balloons or helping me prepare, whatever it is, I'm not afraid
- 4:43to ask for help. And equally anybody knows if
- 4:48they call me at any time and ask me, I will make time to help
- 4:52them. And I just think like, this is a
- 4:54quality that I think really critical care has taught me to
- 4:57do, is not having any shame and asking for it, but then also
- 5:01being the person who can be there for people.
- 5:04And I, if you know me too, one thing that I really love about
- 5:08myself and that I really like is a challenge.
- 5:11And so sometimes people call me and they're like, hey, I can't
- 5:16figure this out or what do you think about this?
- 5:17And I'm like, well, let's do it this way.
- 5:19Let's try out this. And I get really excited about
- 5:22challenges. So I think that that is a really
- 5:24big strength of mine too. I also handle pressure really
- 5:29well. I want the pressure.
- 5:32We were talking about this in the Flight Prep Academy
- 5:34yesterday. It's not only, I mean, maybe it
- 5:36started with like I'm capable of the pressure and I would try to
- 5:39get rid of it. And I really told myself if I am
- 5:43going to work the jobs that I want to work, if I want to be in
- 5:46critical care, I want to be a flight nurse.
- 5:47And now I want to go into entrepreneurship, I not only
- 5:51need to like the pressure, I need to want it.
- 5:55And I do believe I am the person who wants it.
- 5:57And so that is a thought that has floored me a lot is I want
- 6:00the pressure because I wouldn't want to have it any other way.
- 6:05As a nurse, I wanted to have the sickest patients.
- 6:08I wanted that challenge. I wanted the pressure.
- 6:11And as an entrepreneur, I love the challenge.
- 6:13I love the pressure. I love being able to help people
- 6:16in their sticky situations and help them see it in a different
- 6:19way and say the hard thing and show them back their thoughts.
- 6:22Like I want the pressure. So those are some of the things
- 6:26that I really consider my strengths.
- 6:27And sometimes when I have, especially as I'm prepping
- 6:30people for interviews or flight interviews or, you know, yeah,
- 6:35mostly interviews. I I asked him this question.
- 6:38What are your strengths and what are their weaknesses?
- 6:40And they have just as hard of a time coming up with their
- 6:43strengths. I mean, I think a lot of people
- 6:44know what their weaknesses are, but they have a hard time with
- 6:47their strengths. So I think this can be equally
- 6:49as hard. So think about what your
- 6:52strengths are. And I'm going to talk about
- 6:54those in just a second. I want to talk to you about my
- 6:57weaknesses. I'm really clear on what those
- 6:59are. I have an RBF face.
- 7:03I just have a face that can say it all.
- 7:06When COVID happened and we had to wear masks, that was probably
- 7:09the best thing that could happen for me and my family because you
- 7:13couldn't see the frown on my face or when I was disappointed
- 7:16or when I wanted to say something, but my face said it
- 7:20first. I just have this face.
- 7:23I don't know if you guys know the part in the new Top Gun
- 7:26movie, but we we love that movie.
- 7:29But the guy tells him as he as he's getting into go off in in
- 7:38the in the jet and he's like, I don't like that face.
- 7:42And Tom Cruise says it's the only face I got.
- 7:44And so I have to tell my kids that a lot.
- 7:47But in the work that I did before as a flight nurse, my
- 7:51face said it all. And it was something that I had
- 7:54to avidly think about. I remember my manager one time
- 7:58had to be like, you know, they got a complaint about my face
- 8:01and it was just saying it all. And I remember my manager early
- 8:04on telling me, you know, we just just maybe just a little bit of
- 8:07a smile sometimes. And so I know that this is one
- 8:10of my weaknesses. I know my face says it first
- 8:13before anything. And that is something that I am
- 8:15aware of. I am a really bad test taker,
- 8:19especially multiple choice. And you guys know as a nurse and
- 8:22in critical care, there's a lot of test taking.
- 8:25That was my biggest challenge. I knew it would at least take me
- 8:283 times usually to pass the test.
- 8:30And as a flight nurse, we had a lot of oral exams too, at least
- 8:34once a year and then quarterly as well, or with our medical
- 8:37director with education. And so I, I felt like in real
- 8:42life situation that was great, but you put me in like these
- 8:45situations that are made-up or on paper or on the computer and
- 8:51I just was not a great test taker.
- 8:54And I knew that from early on. I wasn't afraid to express that.
- 8:58I wasn't afraid to say that I'm going to go through it in just a
- 9:00minute to like what to lean into with your weaknesses.
- 9:03I another weakness I have is I lack casualties.
- 9:07So we're most people are like, hey, how's it going?
- 9:10How's your dog has a family. Sometimes I just get right in
- 9:14there and pick up, especially if something needs to get done or
- 9:17have a list of things that need to get done.
- 9:20Like for example, these parties I'm planning.
- 9:22Sometimes I get in there with my family and I'm like, OK, what do
- 9:24you guys got going on? This is what I need to get done
- 9:26today. And I kind of lack the
- 9:28casualties of like, hey, how are you?
- 9:30How was your day? And I know that is a big
- 9:34weakness of mine. I think that I relied heavily on
- 9:36my partners to do that in flight and even in in when I worked in
- 9:43the ICU for four years, My best friend in the ICU, we were
- 9:47really good partners with each other.
- 9:50Like if we we tried to get assignments next to each other
- 9:53because she was so good at the psychosocial.
- 9:55She was just like really good at like getting in there,
- 9:58connecting with the family, really expressing like her love
- 10:05for them and all those things. And I would just get in there
- 10:06like, OK, what do we got to do? What these are the labs we need.
- 10:09And I would just be so straightforward.
- 10:12So I think I lacked casualties in that way too.
- 10:15And as a flight nurse, I relied a lot on my partners to bring
- 10:19that side. I did have to establish it
- 10:21because there is a, there is a connection and a deep trust that
- 10:28you have to create right away with your patients and their
- 10:31families because sometimes you only have 510 minutes to do that
- 10:34before you are taking them and you're putting on them on the
- 10:36aircraft. So I became better at that.
- 10:38I just know that that is my weakness.
- 10:42OK, so now that I've kind of talked to you about my strengths
- 10:44and weaknesses, I want to talk to you about how I kind of lean
- 10:46into both. So I lean into my strengths by
- 10:50doubling down on them 1st, I'm able to recognize exactly what
- 10:55they are. So if you don't know what those
- 10:57are yet, start with what you do, what you think they may be.
- 11:01And as you start to write them down or say them out loud, more
- 11:04will come. And what I did when I knew
- 11:08really what my strengths are both personally and
- 11:10professionally, I doubled down in them because I know speaking
- 11:15up is something I'm so good at. I wasn't afraid to ask in the
- 11:19hard moments for what I needed or ask the hard questions of the
- 11:22family. In my personal life, if I sense
- 11:26that something's wrong with my kids, my family or a friend, I
- 11:29ask, I call. If I get a sense that
- 11:32something's wrong with them, I text them or I call them.
- 11:35My gut is something that I really listen to.
- 11:37I really lean into. I'm pretty good at having the
- 11:40gut intuition and I what I do is instead of leaning, just just
- 11:44leaning into it, I double down on it, Meaning I really, really
- 11:48listen to it. I really, really magnify it.
- 11:52And what I have done since I know what some of these
- 11:56strengths are, is I've also grown my capability and capacity
- 12:01to be the person who holds them, who's super confident in them.
- 12:06And what I was saying before is sometimes people see a little
- 12:09bit success in their life. They recognize maybe what their
- 12:12strength is. And then they get overwhelmed
- 12:15and scared by it. Or they think, oh, it's just
- 12:18going to go away or it's just a fluke.
- 12:20And I just want to offer you to grow the capacity to be the
- 12:24person who can hold them. Remind yourself why you're good
- 12:28at it. Remind yourself how you created
- 12:31it, how you got there. Give yourself a whole list of it
- 12:35and then be be the person who can hold that strength.
- 12:39Be the person who is not afraid to take it out of your tool belt
- 12:44and use it whenever you want. Don't have success intolerance.
- 12:48Lean into the success that you've created and magnify it.
- 12:52OK. I also wanted to mention don't
- 12:57shy away from it. Sometimes we see it what our
- 13:02strength is or someone points it out and then we want to shy away
- 13:06from it or we want to pull back. And again, it's a little bit of
- 13:11a success intolerance. But in those moments, lean into
- 13:15it, remind yourself why you're good at it, and then remind
- 13:18yourself how you created it. Because we step out of
- 13:21capability when we forget how we created that strength.
- 13:25And then that's when you lean in and you're like, oh, OK, I'm
- 13:28really good at this. I'm going to double down.
- 13:30I'm going to magnify this. OK, let's talk about weaknesses.
- 13:36What helps me with my weaknesses is making a list of them.
- 13:40Usually this isn't hard for people, but making a list of
- 13:43them and then I acknowledge them to other people, this is what
- 13:48helps release the shame of them. I tell people as soon as I
- 13:51notice them or as soon as they're happening, I tell them,
- 13:55hey, I'm actually really not a good test test taker could you
- 13:59maybe help me with this? Again, I'm not afraid to ask for
- 14:01help so I lean into that when I also get criticism from people.
- 14:06Like for example that time where I got criticism of having the
- 14:10RBF face and them thinking I was being rude to them instead of
- 14:14responding to them the way that they needed me to.
- 14:17When I get criticism, I always see both sides.
- 14:21I always in my head tell myself, yes, I can be so rude, but then
- 14:27yes, I can be so nice and I acknowledge that I'm both.
- 14:32I acknowledge yes, I can be so dumb, yes, but I am so smart
- 14:38too. And so I equally acknowledge
- 14:41whatever the criticism they're giving me that, that I am that
- 14:45person sometimes and equally I'm the other person.
- 14:47We, we, we are both. If we really think about it, we
- 14:51are both that we have moments of being both.
- 14:54Like sometimes my kids tell me, mom, you're so cringe.
- 14:58And I'm like, yes, I am so Grinch, but yes, I am so
- 15:03confident too. And so I think acknowledging
- 15:06that you can be those things that people are giving you
- 15:08criticism, but then you are also the other side and saying them
- 15:11out loud when you see them, whether it's yourself or to
- 15:15other people. I think that gives you so much
- 15:17power back. The second part of weaknesses is
- 15:21that I also spend time loving equally what I'm not good at.
- 15:27When I say loving, it means I don't try to change myself.
- 15:32I don't compare myself to other people.
- 15:34I just love myself and say yes, you know what?
- 15:38I am a bad test taker. And then I tell myself I am
- 15:42capable and in my capability, when I tell myself I'm capable,
- 15:46what happens is I get all these creative ideas of how to make up
- 15:49for this weakness. So if we go back to the example
- 15:51of being a bad test taker, I know I'm a bad test taker.
- 15:55So it took me a little bit in my critical care career to think
- 16:00about, OK, how do I want to navigate this besides just
- 16:02knowing that it's going to take me 3 times to pass the test?
- 16:05I said I am going to hire a tutor and so I hired a tutor, a
- 16:09flight nurse tutor who helped me with concepts before I had any
- 16:12big simulations or before I had to take my CFRN.
- 16:16And that was changing for me. So when you step into
- 16:19capability, even though you acknowledge your weakness and
- 16:22you're like, wait, I'm capable of figuring it out and figuring
- 16:25out the resources I need, then creative ideas come to you.
- 16:28And that is just like one example of one that I use.
- 16:30So I use the same tutor for any testing simulations or whatever
- 16:34that I had go on and that really, really helped me with
- 16:37that piece. Mindset is a big part of it.
- 16:40And that's why I have a business coach.
- 16:41That's why I have a mindset coach.
- 16:43I meet with them weekly and I it's really acknowledging what
- 16:47kind of resources do you need on your team that are really
- 16:52powerful and helpful for yourself.
- 16:53And when you are doing well, take account of what those
- 16:56things are, say hey, this is what I need.
- 17:00OK, for me, I say, hey, I need AI, need a life coach right now
- 17:04on a weekly basis to declutter my brain and to see my thoughts
- 17:07where I can't see them so I can move forward confidently.
- 17:10I need a business coach to help me with the entrepreneur space
- 17:13for strategy and mindset and just really being honest with
- 17:16yourself. Like what do you think?
- 17:18Who are the key players that you think that you might need on
- 17:20your team for those weaknesses? I I also think that life
- 17:30coaching, like I said, and having a life coach in my
- 17:32corner, has changed my life. I acknowledge that our strengths
- 17:38and our weaknesses change throughout our life and now
- 17:43being in my 40s, I think I think a little bit differently about
- 17:47the world and finding life coaching has changed me.
- 17:51It has made some of my strengths a little bit different, has made
- 17:54my weaknesses a little bit different.
- 17:56I don't. I think I was a very abrupt
- 18:01person because I always said what was on my mind and I think
- 18:04I was always quick to speak. I think because of my previous
- 18:07career and job. But my husband even told me the
- 18:10other day, since you found life coaching, you have let go of the
- 18:15control and needing it and the reins, he says, I think you're
- 18:19kinder. I think you're gentler.
- 18:21And I don't necessarily think that that was me before I found
- 18:25the life coaching tools and having my own coach.
- 18:29And so I really think like, you know, your strengths and
- 18:35weaknesses can change over time and acknowledging that those
- 18:38might shift and maybe what you were good at before might become
- 18:42a weakness. But I just always like to be
- 18:44aware of what my strengths are and weaknesses are currently so
- 18:48that I can grow and so that I can love them equally too.
- 18:53I say my strengths out loud, boldly and loudly.
- 18:58And I think this is part of magnifying it.
- 19:00So know what they are. Say them out boldly and loudly.
- 19:04Doing this creates so much love for yourself, your whole self.
- 19:09Not just the good parts, but the part.
- 19:12Not just the part that you only want to show, but all of you.
- 19:15Because I also say out boldly and loudly what are my
- 19:18weaknesses? It's freeing.
- 19:19It gives you a point to focus on, to lean into.
- 19:22It helps me magnify and ride out my strengths.
- 19:25And it helps me in deep acceptance of my weaknesses and
- 19:28areas that I want to grow. I think now that I found life
- 19:34coaching and I've been able to acknowledge my strengths and my
- 19:37weaknesses and love both of them, I think I've so much more
- 19:40energy. I'm a great listener.
- 19:42I'm slower to speak. I have so much unconditional
- 19:46love to give to people because I know myself and I love myself.
- 19:50I love the good parts, I love the bad parts.
- 19:52I love even the darkest parts of me.
- 19:54I hope that this episode gives you guys permission to love both
- 19:58sides, to acknowledge the good parts equally and to and the
- 20:01ones that are a work in progress for you or that simply you're
- 20:04not good at. Give yourself permission to love
- 20:07both your strengths and weaknesses.
- 20:08It gives you so much peace when you can do this, anything and
- 20:13everything becomes possible because you aren't afraid to
- 20:16feel any emotion you. You experience successful people
- 20:21are not people who are always winning, who are always
- 20:23confident. Successful people are the people
- 20:26who are willing to feel any emotion, embarrassment,
- 20:29disappointment, discover discomfort.
- 20:32They get intimate with these emotions.
- 20:34They are not afraid of them. They feel them, they process
- 20:38them and they know exactly what to do when they come and they
- 20:42allow them. They don't resist them.
- 20:45This is the work that we're doing inside the shift.
- 20:47If you are looking for a life coach to change your life,
- 20:51declutter your brain, give you this piece as unconditional
- 20:54love, and grow into your strength and weaknesses.
- 20:56I want to be your life coach. Join us inside the shift.
- 21:00We have weekly coaching with an ongoing community group chat
