Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: G'day, everyone. This is Scotty from We The Hollow and
- 0:02Speaker 1: the founder of Hollowfest.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Beautiful, mate. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Thank you very much for having me. My pleasure, brother.
- 0:10Speaker 3: So after making its debut at the same venue, Hollowfest
- 0:14Speaker 3: returns to the Mansfield Tavern this Halloween for a mammoth
- 0:17Speaker 3: 12 hours of live music across two stages, mate.
- 0:20Speaker 2: How are you feeling with the home stretch inside? I
- 0:22Speaker 2: bet you it's been a bit of work.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It's been a lot of work. It's pretty hard to,
- 0:28Speaker 1: I guess.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Sit on two different sides, like between the band and
- 0:33Speaker 1: the festival, they take.
- 0:34Speaker 4: Up a lot of time. I mean, each, they take
- 0:39Speaker 4: up a lot of time. Between the two, it's a
- 0:41Speaker 4: fucking nightmare. Yeah.
- 0:43Speaker 3: I bet you did, man. I'm like the majority of
- 0:48Speaker 3: music festivals these days, though, bro. HoloFest features only homegrown bands.
- 0:51Speaker 3: You've got We The Holo, Firefly, We The Devil, Depuration, Heaps, Mesmic,
- 0:55Speaker 3: Awaken the Hate, and heaps more, mate. But it's a
- 0:58Speaker 3: bit of a gamble when it comes to selling tickets
- 1:00Speaker 3: with no international headliners, mate.
- 1:02Speaker 2: But good on you for keeping it Australian, bro. Like,
- 1:04Speaker 2: it's not, you don't get enough of it.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's been pretty good. I mean, it's been steady.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I won't, you know, I won't say that it's been massive,
- 1:12Speaker 1: but I think last time I did it in 24,
- 1:16Speaker 1: it was pretty much the same.
- 1:17Speaker 4: It sat pretty steady. And then on the day, it
- 1:20Speaker 4: kind of just boomed. So maybe that'll happen again. You know,
- 1:24Speaker 4: we can only hope.
- 1:25Speaker 3: That's a big stress for a promoter though, isn't it?
- 1:27Speaker 3: You know, like the old days, people used to buy
- 1:28Speaker 3: tickets so you'd know where you were sitting. But these days,
- 1:31Speaker 3: people just don't get them until the last minute and
- 1:32Speaker 3: you've got no idea whether you're even going to be
- 1:34Speaker 3: able to pay for your fucking socks.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Because I'm guilty of it too. I never buy pre-sales, ever.
- 1:42Speaker 4: I'll always just kind of wait till the day and
- 1:44Speaker 4: just be like, fuck it, this is what I want
- 1:46Speaker 4: to do. And I just think 90% of people are
- 1:49Speaker 4: in the same mindset, you know. I'm sure it'll be
- 1:53Speaker 4: good and, you know, it can only be what it is,
- 1:56Speaker 4: you know. You can't force people to come.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Good attitude, brother.
- 2:01Speaker 3: And HoloFest is returning this year after having a break
- 2:04Speaker 3: in 2025, mate. So what sorts of things did you
- 2:06Speaker 3: learn or take out of the first one that you're
- 2:08Speaker 3: going to put in place this year?
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah. To be honest, I haven't kind of really thought
- 2:12Speaker 1: about it like that. I mean, the first one was awesome.
- 2:18Speaker 1: If I could relive that one every time, I'd be stoked.
- 2:24Speaker 4: That was just a good day. I've applied a much
- 2:30Speaker 4: similar mindset to this one. I mean, we're running a
- 2:34Speaker 4: competition for Best Dressed. um reese is actually going to
- 2:38Speaker 4: put in 100 bucks out of his own pocket for
- 2:40Speaker 4: the best beetle juice so yeah there's probably going to
- 2:44Speaker 4: be a shit ton of beetle juices you know but
- 2:49Speaker 4: in saying that you know we're doing the comp um
- 2:52Speaker 4: the first one i did the design your own mask
- 2:55Speaker 4: and at first we were going to paint them all
- 2:58Speaker 4: up and then i just thought fuck it i'm just
- 3:01Speaker 4: going to put a whole bunch of blank masks down
- 3:04Speaker 4: and people can make their own with different coloured Sharpies
- 3:07Speaker 4: and paints, man, they were gone, like, within.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The first two hours, I think, or something. Yeah, right.
- 3:13Speaker 1: 250 masks. There wasn't one left.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it was crazy. It was good. So I'll probably
- 3:19Speaker 1: apply a lot of that. But I think this time
- 3:23Speaker 1: it's more been about perfecting the promotion side. I haven't
- 3:28Speaker 1: perfected it at all.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a long way, brother.
- 3:31Speaker 4: No, I mean, it's getting better, like, You know, I
- 3:35Speaker 4: think the promotion this time around has been a lot better.
- 3:38Speaker 4: You know, I've had help from other people as well,
- 3:42Speaker 4: including yourself, that have given advice and, you know, things
- 3:47Speaker 4: I wouldn't have thought about. So I'm really grateful for
- 3:50Speaker 4: those people. You know, yourself, Benno, Steve, you've all been great.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Yeah, cool, man.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And, of course, it is on Halloween, which is October 31st, mate.
- 4:00Speaker 3: So you mentioned you got the dress-up thing, but is
- 4:03Speaker 3: there anything else spooky happening on the night?
- 4:04Speaker 2: Are you going to be getting into theme?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I would like to.
- 4:09Speaker 4: I don't quite have the same team. Last time, there
- 4:14Speaker 4: was heaps. There were so many people helping. It was
- 4:17Speaker 4: just easy. I just focused on the music. This time around,
- 4:21Speaker 4: people are busy. So, man, I'm definitely going to try–
- 4:25Speaker 4: and feel the vibe and get the best done that
- 4:29Speaker 4: i can but it just would have been much better
- 4:31Speaker 4: if i had the same people as last time no
- 4:35Speaker 4: no so something there'll be something there surely yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Cool but we're encouraging people to dress up like come
- 4:41Speaker 3: along as your speediest.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Costume yeah yeah exactly like just come just come as
- 4:46Speaker 4: your alter ego come as your favorite horror character um.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Whatever you want to be.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Just go hard because there's going to be so many
- 4:56Speaker 4: people there doing the same thing.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Nice, man.
- 4:59Speaker 3: We mentioned before, but you're also in We The Holler,
- 5:01Speaker 3: who the festival's named after. So do you think being
- 5:04Speaker 3: in a band is more a help or a hindrance
- 5:06Speaker 3: when it comes to putting something like this on?
- 5:11Speaker 1: I think both. I think.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Originally we weren't going to play it and everyone else was,
- 5:20Speaker 4: just calling me nuts and saying, you know, it's Followfest, you.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Have to play it. You know, we're, we were just
- 5:29Speaker 1: focusing more on the album and the new music and,
- 5:33Speaker 1: you know, that's, that's where we wanted to be. And
- 5:37Speaker 1: then everyone just kept saying, no, you got to play,
- 5:39Speaker 1: you got to play. So I just thought, fuck it.
- 5:40Speaker 1: All right, sweet. Let's, let's make that happen. So we've
- 5:44Speaker 1: been rehearsing like crazy, um, tailoring a new show um
- 5:52Speaker 1: you know it's been a lot of fun but yeah
- 5:54Speaker 1: i think it has helped like having our name on
- 5:57Speaker 1: it um you know especially for some of the younger
- 6:00Speaker 1: bands that do kind of look up to us they're
- 6:03Speaker 1: really happy to be there and with us doing it
- 6:06Speaker 1: with them you know they're.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Excited for that um you know i don't know yeah
- 6:12Speaker 4: it's just both It can be hard, but it can
- 6:15Speaker 4: also be good.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And then you saw how much trouble Slipknot got in
- 6:19Speaker 3: for not coming over to play at Notfest, mate. So
- 6:21Speaker 3: no way in the world you're not playing at fucking
- 6:23Speaker 3: HoloFest because.
- 6:24Speaker 1: You'll get crucified. I was one of them. I was
- 6:27Speaker 1: so confused. How the fuck do you pull at Notfest
- 6:30Speaker 1: with no Slipknot?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Well, how could you fucking even think about not playing
- 6:33Speaker 2: at HoloFest then? By the same logic?
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, pretty much. I was like, well, if they
- 6:39Speaker 1: can do it, why can't I? But, you know.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Nice.
- 6:44Speaker 2: And how does it go when it comes to booking bands, bro?
- 6:46Speaker 3: Like, I've been in this situation myself, you know, like
- 6:47Speaker 3: you've got bands that you like and you want to
- 6:49Speaker 3: put on, but you've also got to think about appealing
- 6:51Speaker 3: to a broader cross-section of people and getting.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Bumps in the door.
- 6:54Speaker 3: So is it hard? And you know a lot of
- 6:57Speaker 3: bands too, bro. And I know from personal experience they
- 6:59Speaker 3: get the shits when you don't ask them sometimes.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Like, how do you deal with that?
- 7:03Speaker 1: It's hard. I went into it.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Pretty much as non-biased as I could um so instead
- 7:12Speaker 4: of me reaching out and asking people to play I
- 7:16Speaker 4: just put it out there for bands to just put
- 7:19Speaker 4: in submissions yeah I capped it at 20 um I
- 7:23Speaker 4: think last time was maybe a bit more but this
- 7:26Speaker 4: time I was like I want to give people longer
- 7:28Speaker 4: sets you know have some space in between where it's
- 7:33Speaker 4: not just music all the time um so captured at 20,
- 7:38Speaker 4: everyone sent in their submissions. Um, and then I, I
- 7:44Speaker 4: used an app to pretty much compare a whole bunch
- 7:47Speaker 4: of different artists. Um, yeah, it kind of gives, gives
- 7:51Speaker 4: them a score, but it wasn't just that, like, I mean,
- 7:55Speaker 4: there's bands out there that are so great. They're so technical. Um,
- 7:58Speaker 4: but I really wanted to hone in on stage performance. Um,
- 8:05Speaker 4: I wanted to pick the people that could put on
- 8:07Speaker 4: the best show possible and not just play the best
- 8:09Speaker 4: music available.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Because I think it's while you're a musician, you're also
- 8:16Speaker 1: an entertainer. And there was a couple of people who
- 8:19Speaker 1: got the shits and, you know, I'm sorry about that.
- 8:24Speaker 4: I can't please everyone, but it is self-funded and I've
- 8:27Speaker 4: got to think about the festival itself above anyone else.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Especially if I want to grow it, you know, I
- 8:34Speaker 4: plan to grow it. I want to, I would love
- 8:36Speaker 4: to take it on like a national touring show.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Probably fucking impossible and super hard, but you know, you
- 8:45Speaker 1: never know.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Nothing's impossible. It would be so awesome.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Egos aside, it was like the festival comes first, like
- 8:57Speaker 1: the festival came before us as a band and everyone else. So, Yeah, sweet.
- 9:03Speaker 2: What's the layout going to be on the day?
- 9:04Speaker 3: Are you going to have both stages in the main
- 9:06Speaker 3: room or is it going to be one in the
- 9:07Speaker 3: sports bar and.
- 9:07Speaker 2: One in the main room?
- 9:09Speaker 1: Both stages in the main room.
- 9:12Speaker 4: We're aiming for about five minutes of just quiet time
- 9:17Speaker 4: in between each set.
- 9:18Speaker 1: People can, you know, I did it last time. It
- 9:21Speaker 1: was fucking hectic. It was 12 hours, 110 decibels all
- 9:25Speaker 1: fucking day.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Your ears aren't designed to hold, to maintain that.
- 9:32Speaker 4: And there was no time for people just to fucking
- 9:36Speaker 4: chill out, you know.
- 9:37Speaker 1: And it's like five minutes can.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Be a lot of time for someone to just be like, cool,
- 9:43Speaker 4: I want to walk away and go and have a cigarette,
- 9:45Speaker 4: go grab a drink.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Or whatever, you know.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 4: So that was one thing I wanted to keep in
- 9:50Speaker 4: mind this time. But, yeah, two stages left and right,
- 9:53Speaker 4: um you know main stage and side stage i'll probably
- 9:58Speaker 4: call them some kind of names but you.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Know after halloween anyway yeah.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I mean i fucking haven't got that far yet.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Back on with the band bro like uh with the
- 10:10Speaker 5: hollow um he's been a little bit quiet lately but
- 10:13Speaker 5: behind the scenes you haven't been so quiet mate you
- 10:16Speaker 5: got some new music new members happening what just tell.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Us what's going on Yeah, so last year, yeah, last year.
- 10:26Speaker 4: So last year our drummer left. That one was quite
- 10:30Speaker 4: ugly and a lot of people know that story. So
- 10:33Speaker 4: we got a new drummer, but Cody could no longer.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Continue because, you know, just the financial burden. Things were
- 10:41Speaker 1: ramping up. Things were getting expensive.
- 10:44Speaker 4: You know, the poor kid just got himself a new car.
- 10:47Speaker 4: You know, so it's like he's trying to juggle everything.
- 10:50Speaker 4: They're trying to get married. They're trying to raise a family.
- 10:53Speaker 4: So it was like he had to step back, which
- 10:56Speaker 4: was really shit because I've been jamming with him for
- 11:01Speaker 4: like six years and we know each other inside out.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Like when he's got an idea, we can bounce in
- 11:07Speaker 4: between because it's like we just know what we're thinking.
- 11:12Speaker 4: So that happened, but, I mean, it's also allowed me
- 11:17Speaker 4: to have someone come in that.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Is more challenging my abilities. So it's forcing me to
- 11:25Speaker 1: get out of my box and.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Start writing a bit more technical and a bit faster
- 11:31Speaker 4: and just really think about how I would write a song.
- 11:34Speaker 1: So I'm excited for it. Um, yeah, so we got,
- 11:40Speaker 1: we got an EP in the works that's coming out
- 11:42Speaker 1: eventually whenever that comes out. Um, Apart from that, it's
- 11:46Speaker 1: been solid. It's been really good.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah, nice.
- 11:49Speaker 3: And speaking of the EP, bro, I've been fortunate enough
- 11:51Speaker 3: to have a listen to it, and it's an absolute
- 11:53Speaker 3: fucking cracker, bro. But tell us about it musically.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Like, is it what fans of We The Hollow would expect,
- 11:59Speaker 2: do you think?
- 12:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it still represents our sound well. I mean,
- 12:06Speaker 4: some tracks are a bit more raw and stripped back,
- 12:11Speaker 4: while others.
- 12:14Speaker 4: You know, there's flavours in there that haven't been there
- 12:16Speaker 4: in the past. You know, sometimes it's daunting because you
- 12:22Speaker 4: don't know whether you actually really like it or not
- 12:24Speaker 4: and if other people will like it, but that's just self-doubt. Yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 4: everyone goes through that. But I think as it stands
- 12:34Speaker 4: right now, yeah, it will be the classic hollow beer.
- 12:41Speaker 4: kind of sound just with some newer elements um i've
- 12:45Speaker 4: still got two more songs to finish there's actually going
- 12:47Speaker 4: to be another two on it um then yeah music
- 12:51Speaker 4: videos and all that other fun shit.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Nice i noticed the production was really good too bro
- 12:56Speaker 3: like i put it on before again before this and
- 12:58Speaker 3: um it it doesn't sound like it's an australian band
- 13:01Speaker 3: making music no sound it's polished it's got that that
- 13:04Speaker 3: big sound to it like an international.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Band gets that's um That's Dr. Mike Trebetskov down in Victoria.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Ah, okay. So he's been fucking great. He's been so
- 13:15Speaker 4: good to work with. We recorded everything ourselves. We self-produce
- 13:22Speaker 4: and then give it to him. He bounces some ideas,
- 13:27Speaker 4: adds his little bit of spice, makes his mask up,
- 13:29Speaker 4: you know, gets it back to us.
- 13:33Speaker 1: He's been great. He's been really fucking good to work
- 13:35Speaker 1: with and I could not recommend him.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Yeah, very cool, man, very cool.
- 13:40Speaker 3: And for people who are wondering about the EP that
- 13:42Speaker 3: we're talking about too, because there's always going to be
- 13:44Speaker 3: people out there that want it yesterday, we can't give
- 13:47Speaker 3: them an exact date to release yet because there are
- 13:49Speaker 3: some other things going on behind the scenes that we
- 13:52Speaker 3: can't really talk about, but it's going to dictate a
- 13:53Speaker 3: lot of that stuff, isn't it?
- 13:55Speaker 4: Yeah, so, I mean, I wanted it out yesterday because
- 13:59Speaker 4: I'm fucking, you know, I'm sick of holding on to it.
- 14:03Speaker 4: But I guess all I can say on that is, yeah,
- 14:08Speaker 4: There is label attention. And it's more, I'm just waiting
- 14:15Speaker 4: on the contract. And once that's all finalised, we should
- 14:19Speaker 4: have a release date.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Yeah, fuck yeah. Well, I guess you're going to be
- 14:23Speaker 3: playing any of the new songs at HoloFest, mate. That
- 14:25Speaker 3: should keep fans happy.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Absolutely, we are. Fuck.
- 14:31Speaker 4: I'm looking at the set list now. I'm building a
- 14:34Speaker 4: set list for the IEM rig. And, yeah, there's quite
- 14:40Speaker 4: a lot in there. Some of the favourites that people
- 14:43Speaker 4: would expect are not there.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Yeah, there's quite a few. Five new ones,
- 14:52Speaker 1: some of them are.
- 14:53Speaker 2: The new ones you sent me are bangers, bro. Each
- 14:55Speaker 2: one of them would go over well live.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Oh, we've been practising. I'm, like, mad because, like,
- 15:01Speaker 1: you know, we can't fuck this thing up, so.
- 15:04Speaker 2: There you go. Shinora, bro, well, thanks for your time.
- 15:07Speaker 3: HoloFest is at the Mansfield Tavern on October 31st, which
- 15:10Speaker 3: is Halloween.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Where can people get tickets and find out more information, bro?
- 15:14Speaker 1: People can find tickets on the AusTix site.
- 15:16Speaker 4: They can find the event on Facebook itself.
- 15:20Speaker 1: All the bands are plugging it really hard, which is great.
- 15:23Speaker 4: It's been good to see 20 bands just really going hard.
- 15:28Speaker 1: There's been a lot of excitement for it. Yeah, everyone's
- 15:31Speaker 1: doing a great job. AusTix, HoloFest 26, Facebook events, just
- 15:39Speaker 1: find the HoloFest page. The event will be there. Ticket
- 15:42Speaker 1: links are all there.
