- 1:41for Johnny Dollar. This is NASA LA Police. Oh Hies, Sergeant any
- 1:47Lucky Nothing stop all boys, been in jazz before. He's a tough cookie
- 1:52and we don't scare him a bit. What's a story? Says he was
- 1:55walking through the courtyard of the apartment as when you jumped in from the bushes,
- 1:57Wames. He thought it was a stick up, fired that shot at
- 2:00you self defense. What was he doing there in the first place? On
- 2:04a girl friend? Only she'd given him the wrong address. We can hold
- 2:07him of a night for carrying a concealed weapon, but that's about all,
- 2:09Johnny. You'll make bail in the morning. Well fine, let him.
- 2:13Things aren't ending up and it's got him worry. He's afraid he's being double
- 2:15crossn he's fighting man about it on the loose. Maybe you'll be a help
- 2:19to us. Maybe he can find Eddie Kaylyn. What are you talking about?
- 2:23Eddie Kylin's downtown in the Morgue on a marble slab. Sergeant want a
- 2:28bet tonight and every weekday night Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man
- 2:40with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous Freelance insurance Investigator Osterley Johnny Deller from
- 2:57Special Investigator Johnny Doller, location, Los Angeles, to the home office Trinity
- 3:00Mutual Insurance Company Limited, Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment to klen Matter expense account
- 3:06continued. I was following a hunch, one that had started when Sergeant Rhinosa
- 3:13said the police found the door of the Kalen apartment locked on the night of
- 3:15Eddie's death, lock with a key, and Nola. Hunch was stronger the
- 3:20way Leanley had acted, Tampo Leanley, the gambler from whom Eddie had won
- 3:23sixty thousand dollars at night, Things like La Kalyn had said about her husband.
- 3:28They all added up, but it was still only a hunch, not
- 3:31proof. And proof I had to have, and at the moment, the
- 3:36only chance I could see of getting it was to backtrack on Eddie Kalen,
- 3:38his hangouts, his contacts, his missing friend Pete Steimer, his movements during
- 3:44the hours before his car was found blazing at the bottom of a canyon,
- 3:46and Palos Verdes. In a way, what I had to do was bring
- 3:50him back to life. Expense account adem six fourteen dollars and ten cents transportation
- 3:55to an incidentals at a dim little hole in the wall bar on on Santa
- 3:59Monica, boulevard called the Cafe Allowins. It was an out of the way
- 4:04clip joint dedicated to the mood Caribbean, complete with palm frowns, drinks and
- 4:09coconut shells, and a lovely little hostess with a beautifully developed and well rounded
- 4:15Latin accent. You would like a nice table, amagle. Oh, this
- 4:18one's fine, but I would like a nice talk. Sit down, honey,
- 4:23let's get acquainted. Well, maybe for a few minutes. My name
- 4:29is Pepizza, of course, what else? I'm Johnny Dollar. That's a
- 4:32funny name. Oh I'm a funny guy. Will will you buy me a
- 4:36drink? Is that the gimmick here? What do you order? A champagne
- 4:41cocktail? See for which I paid two bucks? It's made with ten cents
- 4:45worth of saw a turn you get a one dollar kickback. Isn't that the
- 4:47way to play? Are you with the by squad? Don't forget it,
- 4:50relaxed. Hey, look, I'll do better than buy you a drink.
- 4:55What are you doing after you through here? No, no dick. When
- 4:59I quit work here, I go straight home, amigo, and I live
- 5:02with my mother. Oh well, that's a very good arrangement. Cheap in
- 5:05that way for both of you. But here's ten bucks. What I want
- 5:11from you with some information about a customer who comes in here a lot or
- 5:14used to anyway, Eddie Killen. You know you are not a police or
- 5:19you wouldn't give me ten dollars just for talking. Sure, I know Eddie,
- 5:26but you want to know about it. Why did you see him last
- 5:29on Thursday, the day before he was killed? How did he act?
- 5:32What did he say? Anything under the ordinary? He said he loved me
- 5:36madly, passionately, devotionally, and if I do not love him too,
- 5:42he will kill himself, just like ordinary. He was lying, of course,
- 5:47but he always was such exciting to listen. Then you buy me champagn
- 5:51cocktail and borrow from me the money to pay for you got a boy he
- 6:00was? How you say he was the most? Yeah? How long was
- 6:06he in here that night? He can stay one hour? Perhaps by himself.
- 6:11No pits amigo, Pete, Pete Steimer. Have you seen Pete since
- 6:16then? No? I do not think nobody has seen him. What do
- 6:20you think has happened to him? Who knows? Maybe he's too sad for
- 6:26Eddie dying, so he has hide out someplace or by himself. No,
- 6:30that's a theory. Did any seem worried that night? Scared? No,
- 6:36not scared, nothing special on his mind, apparently, No, just like
- 6:40our ways, just like Eddie, you know, No I never met him.
- 6:46Oh then why you asked this question? Just a routine business matter.
- 6:50What about women? Women, other girlfriends of Eddie's and next to you of
- 6:54course next to me with Eddie, every girl? What's first? What about
- 7:00nightclub here? Any of them come in here, work here? Oh?
- 7:02Eddie was too smart for that. In each one place, only one girl
- 7:08that way, no trouble. Eddie was smart, Yeah, he was the
- 7:13most. What about girls and other places around town? Do you know any
- 7:17of them? I do not know anybody. What you've heard rumors? Well,
- 7:23there is a place which is called a breast Monkey. Yeah, they
- 7:27have girls there, which how you say it, they take off some clothes
- 7:31and go jump around with the music. Stripperes steppers will Somebody has always make
- 7:38jokes with me about one of those steppers. They say Eddies have the big
- 7:43thing with her. They think to make me mad, But there's no difference
- 7:46to me. I know how Eddie is. Do you know the girl's name?
- 7:50The very silly name which she has makeup is Marty Midnight. Marty Midnight.
- 7:59She has black hair like me, but mine is natural black. Oh
- 8:03yeah, sure, I figured as much. It's very beautiful in its Johnny,
- 8:09well, thanks for some pleasant conversations. You are leaving now, yeah,
- 8:13but maybe you will come back. No, I wasn't planning to me
- 8:20at one o'clock. I am through working. If you would come back,
- 8:26no, no, we wouldn't want to worry your poor old mother. Would
- 8:31we keep a waiting up? What are you talking about? My mother is
- 8:35leaving Havanacouver expense account adam seven twenty three dollars and forty cents more transportation and
- 8:45some more of those incidentals. This time at the Resmok year that name would
- 8:50come up twice. Now Eddie Callan's widow would mention it first, so I
- 8:54figured I'd better have a look at it. The Yellowenas have been a fairly
- 8:56quiet place, dimly lighted with a big play on that mystery of the jungle
- 9:01routine. But the Brands Monkey was a pony of a different sense. At
- 9:05the Brans Monkey, they let down their hair and really lived. The chorus
- 9:13line was on and at it when I arrived, and strangely enough, the
- 9:15girls were all dull. It's hurt young library. Seven of them left or
- 9:18right when I wanted to, seven had midnight black hair. I leaned against
- 9:24the service bar and waited for the bartended to come down out of the clowns
- 9:26and notice me, and he finally did. I sorry, Buster, just
- 9:31couldn't see if they're looking at you. Oh that's all right. We would
- 9:33bother with a customer at a time like this. Another art lover the man
- 9:39man, I'll tell you true. There is the cream of the crop,
- 9:41seven shining systems, the Pleiades brother, the absolute uptop zenith of the entire
- 9:48ecenthusiastic firmly, but you'll have to drink scotch of her ice. Checko.
- 9:54I read a lot. That's where I get all the big words. Always
- 9:58try to better myself, get ahead, man, that's the thing. Yeah,
- 10:01so I've heard so I read all the time, and I got a
- 10:05system to a shortcut. You know all in books you're seeing around, you
- 10:09know what they're full of, well, opinions, very words, and you
- 10:13know where they get them from the dictionary. So I don't mess around.
- 10:16I go right to headquarters. The only book I read is the Dictionary.
- 10:22You one sure read it through twice and now I'm clear up to jay On
- 10:28the third time around. You know what a joss house is? Yeah,
- 10:31it's a Chinese temple. I think I need that drink down. Oh I'm
- 10:37sorry, busting Yeah, say you're pretty smarts yourself. Oh I'm a pettant
- 10:43petting that's where a p Nah. No, I won't get to that for
- 10:48another three months. That's a buck even for the drink. Here you go
- 10:52keep the change. Well, thanks, I hey, and this is a
- 10:56twenty you give me? Yeah, I know, I see. Well,
- 11:01Buston, the answer is no, I can't fix you up with one of
- 11:07the girls. All I want is some information like wise, like where is
- 11:11Marty midnight this evening? Oh that I wouldn't know. She hasn't been around
- 11:16since well not for the last four or five nights since Eddie Kynan was murdered.
- 11:22Is that what you're about to say? Police insurance investigator? The company
- 11:26I represented you a policy other Eddie Kylin with insurance he taken out about two
- 11:31months ago. Who's the better Fishuary's fine? Man? Why? Well,
- 11:35I never met the gal, but I guess she's got something common. She
- 11:39must have took quite a beaten off Eddie. Oh man, that cat could
- 11:45really operate, So I get it. You happen to know where Marty lives.
- 11:48She moved a few weeks ago after she took up with Eddie. I
- 11:52don't even know her real name. Here is the manager here, I'm the
- 11:56manager buster. I hired him, fired him, and in between. Just
- 11:58look at him. Oh man, what a life? You know. A
- 12:03friend of Eddie's named Pete Stimer, sure I know he hasn't been around either,
- 12:07disappeared that same night. Huh yeah, yeah, that was a bad
- 12:11night all around. There was another guy dropped out of sight to a hood
- 12:15name Mike kelso One a top of lean Ley's boys. You know, Tampa,
- 12:18it comes in all the time. He said, hey, hey,
- 12:22wait a minute, you must be the cat that broke his arm. Who
- 12:28well, congratulations, felicitations and happy days. I'll have a drink myself on
- 12:33that real popular boy. Oh the most I understand he got his thought by
- 12:39leaning out of his baby carriage and shoving his mother under a car. Was
- 12:43he in here that night? Sure, that's where Eddie met him. I
- 12:46told Eddie to stay clear of that game? Was I right? And you
- 12:50think that's why I was killed at sixty thousand dollars? He wanted busted.
- 12:54That's the type of question I never answered, And that's exactly why I stay
- 12:58so healthy where you don't have to answer. And that's where all the logic
- 13:03points. Eddie met Tom Polinely in here that night and wasn't vited into want
- 13:07to lean these big time poker games, and he was lucky, plenty lucky,
- 13:09and Leanly got hit hard. He decided he wouldn't stand still for it,
- 13:13so he and his muscle man Mike Kelso, went around to Eddie's apartment,
- 13:16beat him up, got the sixty thousand bucks, took Eddie out of
- 13:18the palace Verdes Hills, ran him off the cliff, and set fire to
- 13:22his car. Any reason why it couldn't have happened like that? No,
- 13:26No, But there are a lot of loose ends, like what has happened
- 13:30to Pete Steimer and Marty Midnight Scared silly, hiding out like Kelso, same
- 13:33thing. He's sweating it out, waiting to see which way the wind blows.
- 13:37Oh, there's whispers around that he double cross topo and ran out with
- 13:41the door. Could be, but I keep remembering that door. What do
- 13:45to Eddie's apartment? It was left locked with a key? So what's it
- 13:48got to do with them? The police? I'm rating again? Hey,
- 13:52d cook the water, bob whiskey down a sake, Jackie, get back
- 13:56there to tell the girls to cover up. I take it easy, you'll
- 13:58catch Just keep your seats everything. Relax, Relax, it's not a ray.
- 14:01That's Sergeant Rainosa. He's handling a klan case. What's there? A
- 14:05cups of cup them out of what he's hand I'll shook it up. Red
- 14:07turning out, want him to sick at them all in What the devil are
- 14:09you are doing here? Johnny having a drink? What's up, sergeant?
- 14:13I'm looking for a girl who's supposed to work here name of Marty Midnight saw
- 14:16him. I what's your reason? Suspicion of murder? Wants the guy who
- 14:20was killed in her apartment about an hour ago. The neighbors heard the shots
- 14:24and it's real crazy, Johnny, it just can't be, but it is.
- 14:28We got a fast check on the finger. Friends, you know,
- 14:30the guy was sure it was Eddie Calan Johnny Diller Johnny. Well, that's
- 14:54strange. Is this missus Klan? Lila? Yes, someone from the police
- 14:56department asked me to call it Sergeant Minosa at this number, but I didn't.
- 15:00Yeah, Rainess, I was trying to reach you, but your phone
- 15:03didn't answer. I was just letting it rain I'm trying to get some sleep.
- 15:05But then the officer came by. Where are you, Johnny? What's
- 15:09happened? We're at the apartment of a girl named Marty Midnight Ever hear ever?
- 15:13No, why, Lila? You better brace yourself. Honey, you've
- 15:16got another shock coming. Shock. What do you mean your husband didn't die
- 15:20in a burning auto? No, no, not now. He was shot
- 15:26to death an hour and a half ago here in Marty's apartment. Who did
- 15:30it? I don't know yet. Hang on to yourself and I'll come by
- 15:33and see you as soon as I'm free here, please promise. From Special
- 15:41Investigator Johnny Doller. Location, Los Angeles, the home office Trinity Mutual Insurance
- 15:46Company Limited, Hartford, Connecticut. Assignment the Kalan matter expense account continued.
- 15:54The homicide squad was finishing up its work when Sergeant Reynolds and I got back
- 15:58out to the apartment of Marty Midnight Stars Stripper the Brass Monkey in Eddie Calyn's
- 16:03body had been photographed, check measured, fingerprinted, examined, sketch, written
- 16:07up and reported on taking out finally under a white sheet. I held the
- 16:11door open for the morg attendants to get out with their silent burden, and
- 16:15stood watching them. Wheel is stretching down the walk and loaded into the waiting
- 16:18ambulance. A light mist had started to fall and a damn cold blanket of
- 16:22fog was seeping down from the dark hillsides at Griffith Park beyond the road.
- 16:26There was a feeling of finality in the air, of the end of things,
- 16:30and for the man who died twice, it was final. Yeah,
- 16:33there was no doubt about it. This time Eddie Calyn was dead. I
- 16:41am tired, Johnny, just playing dead dog tired. Yeah, it's gonna
- 16:45to be a long night. Sit down and start talking any particular subject,
- 16:52Sargeant, you know what subject? You weren't surprised when you heard Eddie Caylyn
- 16:56had been alive all this time, that it wasn't his buddy in the wreck
- 17:00car out in Palace Verdes. How come, Johnny, why weren't you surprised
- 17:06because I was expecting it. Why else, No, you gotta do more
- 17:10talking than that. Well, it started with a hunch, And the hunch
- 17:14started when you told me you found the door of Eddie Kalin's apartment locked when
- 17:18you went there that night he was supposed to have died. Yeah, I
- 17:19know, locked with a key. You mentioned that. Well, that was
- 17:23the important part. If it had been a door with a night lock or
- 17:26a spring latch that snaps when you pull a shut, it wouldn't have been
- 17:30anything. It still doesn't as far as I'm concerned. Hi, Look,
- 17:33there was evidence there'd been a fight in that apartment at night. We assumed
- 17:37that somebody had knocked any unconscious or killed him there in the apartment, then
- 17:41taking his body out to his car, driven it out to the palace Verdi's
- 17:44Headland and set fire to its. Right then, at the time that somebody
- 17:48left the apartment, the heat was on. They had a body on their
- 17:51hands. Maybe someone had heard the fight, call the police. They had
- 17:53to get out fats. Yeah, sure, But under those circumstances, can
- 17:56you imagine anybody taking the time to go through Eddie's pockets to find his door
- 18:00key and bothering to stop and lock the door behind him. It's illogical except
- 18:06for one person, Eddie himself. How do you figure with him it would
- 18:11be just a matter of habit, locking the door as usual when he left
- 18:14home. All right, Jenny, I see your point. Then how do
- 18:17you call a play that night about the way we were tagging it up to
- 18:21a point? Eddie won sixty thousand bucks in that poker game with Tompolinley.
- 18:25He went home either alone or with that friend of his, Pete Steimer.
- 18:29So Tappo had no intention of taking that kind of a loss, so he
- 18:32sent his trigger man, Mike Kelso, to recover the money. The fight
- 18:36was between Eddie and Mike, only Mike was the one who lost, not
- 18:38Eddie, didn't you figure? Eddie put Mike Kelso's body in his car and
- 18:42drove it out to Palace Burdas and said, fired sure, with Pete Steimer's
- 18:45help. Probably it's possible Buddy was practically destroyed. Or we had for identification,
- 18:51was the wallet, watch, key chain, so and they could have
- 18:53been planted. I think they were. It was a sudden idea spur of
- 18:57the moment, but Eddie was for it. There he was with sixty thousand
- 19:03dollars in his pocket but a dead man on his hands. And as far
- 19:06as his wife was concerned, I think the chance of shaking her and not
- 19:08sharing the money was just an added inducement. So he and Pete arranged for
- 19:14the punny to be identified as his and Eddie just disappeared and hold up here
- 19:18in his girlfriend's apartment. Why not? He and Pete both Apparently the three
- 19:22of them were planning to jump the country, judging by that four diver certificate
- 19:26you found in there on the breakfast table. Only it didn't work up that
- 19:30way. Now Eddie's dead, really dead. Now Pete and Marty have disappeared
- 19:36again, and the sixty grand is missing. Find them and you find the
- 19:40money, Johnny. It sounds like the same old story. Big money,
- 19:42big temptation, and a falling out among friends. That's most likely. Of
- 19:47course, there is one other possibility. What's top Holy? Was he out?
- 19:52Yeah, I'll come. There's a rough combination, Johnny Good lawyer on
- 19:56his side in the poor case on ours. He was sprung two hours before
- 19:59the neighbors reported the shooting. Here the anonymous neighbor. Wow, it could
- 20:03be, but I'm still betting I was Pete Stimer or Marty Midnight. I'm
- 20:07not betting anything anywhere. The way things stand now, it's anybody's guess his
- 20:11own gun. No, Prince Anna, you pays your nickel and you takes
- 20:15your choice. Well, at least the field narrow stuff. Seems like we
- 20:18got a visitor, probably one of the uniform boys on duty outside. Yes,
- 20:23the policeman outside, say for me to come to you. I am
- 20:26Jeannetti bois. Oh what can I do for it? I am the person
- 20:32who reports the shooting on the telephone. Come on in, nelste miss you.
- 20:37How can you refuse to give you a name when you found the police?
- 20:40You are Captain Sergeant Reynaud. So this is Johnny Dalamans to boy.
- 20:45He is also police. He's working with us on this. Now. Why
- 20:48wouldn't you give your name when you reported the shooting? I am very sorry,
- 20:52miss you. You see, I have not been in this country too
- 20:56long, and I am afraid that I will be implicated. So I do
- 21:00not give the name at first, But finally I think it over and I
- 21:04call my friend, the consul, and he said, I must come to
- 21:07you immediately. And he's right. So you heard the shooting. We miss
- 21:11you. I was walking past in front. I leave three places down from
- 21:17here. All of a sudden there is bang, bang, bang, and
- 21:21I am scared to piece it, I can imagine. Then the door of
- 21:23this place is slam open very quick, and I jump in the shadow behind
- 21:27a bush. A girl starts to come out, and then she stopped in
- 21:32the door. What did she look like? Master devoir? It is too
- 21:34dark for telling good, But I have seen her before. I know from
- 21:40her hair, very long, black might even night. Was that the one?
- 21:44A girl who lives here? We miss you? I did not know
- 21:47her name, all right? What happened? Then she's standing the door for
- 21:51a second. She's wearing a how you said, a white raincoat. She
- 21:56is holding something in her hand. These things she wipes with wayne coat all
- 22:00over. Then she throws it back into the room. Was it a gun?
- 22:04I think so. Then she pulls it off shut and runs down the
- 22:08street. I am too scared to think what to do for a minute.
- 22:12Then I hurry home very fast, and I telephoned to the police. You
- 22:17didn't see anybody else around the place or on the street out in front,
- 22:19no, monsieur dolla. I watch for my window until the police have come.
- 22:23Nobody else has come out or go in. I see well, Sanche.
- 22:29She won't get far go with her lugs draws too much attention. We'll
- 22:32pick her up before morning. Thank you for your information, mister Boim,
- 22:37in view of your cooperation, now I think we can forget about you not
- 22:40telling us all this sooner. Does that mean I can go now? Yes,
- 22:42just leave your name and address with the officer outside. May I finish
- 22:45you? That kind of surprises me. I get figured that two of them
- 22:55together gaining up on Eddie, But apparently it was just morning midnight on on
- 23:00her own, been done before Johnny, and not the weakest sex, no
- 23:03matter what the book says. I know, but the fact never fails to
- 23:07amaze me. He shouldn't. He must have been on some of the same
- 23:11kind of cases that the devil come on. The patrol on station at the
- 23:18back entrance to the apartment on the house told us what had happened. He'd
- 23:22surprised somebody, a man he thought, lurking in the bushes beside the house.
- 23:25The prowler fired a shot and ran. He paid no attention to the
- 23:27order to halt the patrolman had fired twice missed. The fugitive had escaped into
- 23:32the dense under brush at Griffith Park just across the street. Sergeant Rhinosa spotted
- 23:36men quickly along the edge of the brush, set up a portable spotlight in
- 23:38the squad car, sent his other car upon access road to block off the
- 23:41ridge line, radioed for reinforcements. Within five minutes, a fifteen acre area
- 23:45of the slope was surrounded and blocked off. Well, what do you say,
- 23:49Johnny, Shall we go in after him? And it looks like we'll
- 23:52have to and he seems to be the shy type. Call it. What
- 23:53do you think? I'm putting my money on top? Holdingly, good bed.
- 23:59Let's go keep that crowd back out of the way. It couldn't be
- 24:06any ducker in here. Oh water, he shoot your flash over there til
- 24:10the right. No, it's an old stunt. All right, We've got
- 24:15you surrounded. You better come out with your hands up. If you try
- 24:18to resist, you'll only make it tougher on yourself. You hear something,
- 24:22then, no, it's over on the left. I think let's take a
- 24:26look. Watch yourself, Johnny. He's throwing lead once already yeah, dare
- 24:30back at that tree. What'd your flesh steady there? You see? Come
- 24:36out with your hands up. It's your last chance. I'm warning yup,
- 24:42got no choice, Johnny, he's down. Come on second, Well,
- 24:53what do you know? It wasn't tomp Oley. It was Eddie Kahlan's friend,
- 25:02Pete Steimer. Expensive count out of nine one dollar for a newspaper,
- 25:11two packs of cigarettes and a cardboard cart and of hot coffee, purchased from
- 25:15an all night diner across the street from the Queen of the Angel's Hospital.
- 25:18I took them up to the Police emergency ward room six twelve, pulled a
- 25:22chair up in front of the window, and sat down to wait. Pete
- 25:25Steimer was still unconscious, still hadn't been able to speak a word since he
- 25:29dropped to the ground with Sergeant Reinolds's bullet in his chest. So I waited
- 25:33outside. The cool mist was still coming down steadily. The night was pretty
- 25:37far gone. It was less than three hours before Dawn and nurse sat silently
- 25:41beside the bed. The only sound of the room was the horse slow breathing
- 25:45of the wounded man. After a while, the nurse left the room for
- 25:56something and Pete seemed to rouse slightly at this out of the door. Where
- 26:04where where? Where I am? Take an easy pace, don't try to
- 26:11talk Eddie. Is is Eddie here? No, he's not here here ought
- 26:23to be here. It's it's always been like this, relaxed, nice,
- 26:33It's all right. Eddie always runs out and and leaves somebody else to do
- 26:47easy, easy, somebody else to place the music each and those were his
- 27:06last words before he went to face the music. Now here's our star to
