- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I'm your
- 0:07Speaker 1: host Scott Brady, and I'm with my co host Matt
- 0:10Speaker 1: Swartz hither and we're going to talk about It's an
- 0:13Speaker 1: electrifying subject. We're going to get a terrible pie of
- 0:16Speaker 1: bad jokes.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Got to get them in there every chance you can, though, So.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're going to talk about the Hummer ev which I
- 0:22Speaker 1: will say off the bat is an extremely exciting vehicle
- 0:25Speaker 1: on specification and in practice, and we're going to talk
- 0:28Speaker 1: about our experience with that vehicle.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Over the last two days in Arizona, and we're going
- 0:33Speaker 3: to go through the specs.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We're going to go through all of our impressions and
- 0:36Speaker 1: our opinions on the vehicle and what it does great
- 0:38Speaker 1: at and what it doesn't do so great at.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Really fun vehicle.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Overall, and special thanks to Equipped for supporting today's podcast.
- 0:48Speaker 1: More than fifteen years ago, Equipped Expedition Outfitters became the
- 0:52Speaker 1: first American company to import the best in breed vehicle
- 0:56Speaker 1: expedition equipment from across the globe. Since they're humble beginnings,
- 1:00Speaker 1: they have risen to become a go to leader within
- 1:02Speaker 1: the adventure travel industry, continuing to deliver a diverse portfolio
- 1:06Speaker 1: of reliable, long lasting products backed by unparalleled customer service,
- 1:11Speaker 1: from shelter solutions from easy On to portable fridges from
- 1:15Speaker 1: National Luna to aluminum storage boxes from alue Box. Their
- 1:19Speaker 1: ever growing selection of best in class gear increases your capability, comfort,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and confidence during any adventure. Is it equipped one dot
- 1:28Speaker 1: com to gear up before we do that? What's new?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Man? What's going on? Man?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Lots of stuff? Honestly, I just had the truck in
- 1:38Speaker 2: at Summit four by four, which is our local specialty
- 1:41Speaker 2: off road vehicle shop up here in Prescotte. Those guys
- 1:44Speaker 2: were installing a new AEV lift in our twenty five
- 1:47Speaker 2: hundred RAM. So it's so good. It looks really good.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It looks really good. Yeah, it changed the character of
- 1:52Speaker 2: that truck so much. And in editions of the lift
- 1:55Speaker 2: we put on some seventeen inch wheels also from AEV
- 1:58Speaker 2: with thirty seven inch time and so yeah, going from
- 2:02Speaker 2: the OEM standard on the road sure wheel tire combo
- 2:06Speaker 2: to what is really like a proper wheel for overland
- 2:10Speaker 2: driving off road adventures, it's totally different.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It just matches the flotation to the weight of the truck.
- 2:18Speaker 1: So it's just going to really improve your You'll find
- 2:20Speaker 1: in the snow it's going to do better. You'll find
- 2:22Speaker 1: in the sand it's going to do better. Mud it'll
- 2:24Speaker 1: do better. A little more floatation, but it looks it
- 2:26Speaker 1: looks great. And I've always been such a huge fan
- 2:29Speaker 1: of the Tradesmen, So see the Tradesman project coming along
- 2:32Speaker 1: like that is great.
- 2:33Speaker 2: I'm really looking forward to producing some video content around
- 2:36Speaker 2: this this upgrade, specifically because I was lucky enough to
- 2:39Speaker 2: have AV support with the new dual Sport suspension package
- 2:43Speaker 2: that they're doing in so that has the new Bilsteen
- 2:46Speaker 2: eighty one hundred shock in it, which is a remote
- 2:49Speaker 2: reservoir shock, and it's it's just like it's so beefy
- 2:52Speaker 2: and you know, AEV tunes everything so that you get
- 2:55Speaker 2: like a very close to well, you maintain OEM performance, right,
- 2:59Speaker 2: you maintain your OEM spring so you have those same
- 3:02Speaker 2: spring rates and everything. So performance is not diminished in
- 3:05Speaker 2: any way as far as towing more payload, but you
- 3:08Speaker 2: have just such a much more comfortable ride. And even
- 3:11Speaker 2: in the minimal amount of driving I done since getting
- 3:13Speaker 2: the truck back, it's already noticeable. I mean, it is
- 3:15Speaker 2: it just feels so much more plush, and the.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Tires help as well.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Definitely, you have more carcass that can you know, absorb
- 3:23Speaker 1: energy from the road and impacts and like attenuate a
- 3:26Speaker 1: little bit of that.
- 3:27Speaker 3: And you did a General tire look.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Like we put General at x AT tires on there.
- 3:34Speaker 2: So they're aggressive. They've got you know, some serious tread
- 3:37Speaker 2: coming down onto the sidewall, so you get that protection
- 3:40Speaker 2: and that extra traction when you air down the tires.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I think they're a great tire for someone like us
- 3:45Speaker 2: who does a lot of towing too. You know, they're
- 3:47Speaker 2: not overly aggressive like a mud terrain. They're not going
- 3:50Speaker 2: to hopefully affect our gas mileage quite as much. But
- 3:52Speaker 2: they have a really good warranty on them. I think
- 3:55Speaker 2: they're fifty thousand miles. I think we're supposed to run
- 3:57Speaker 2: them at about fifty psi, which is a little bit
- 3:59Speaker 2: less at the high end than what we're used to.
- 4:02Speaker 2: The truck calls for sixty psi in the OEM tires.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So even that yes, oftens the ride to see it will.
- 4:08Speaker 1: It'll make a difference. It'll make a difference also on
- 4:10Speaker 1: the trail and everything else. So now that you can
- 4:12Speaker 1: go so much lower on air pressure. It's gonna well.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And you already took the truck out for a little
- 4:16Speaker 1: bit of an evaluation, so we find yeah fun to
- 4:19Speaker 1: get your thoughts and future videos. You just dropped your
- 4:22Speaker 1: first segment video on that truck, so you can everybody
- 4:24Speaker 1: can check that out on YouTube.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yep. And you're getting ready to leave Arizona. Where you heading?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, So my partner Amanda, and our dog Royal and
- 4:32Speaker 2: I are all gonna load up the airstream and we're
- 4:34Speaker 2: going to head up to Grand Junction to start off.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So going to be hopefully doing some paragliding there. There's
- 4:40Speaker 2: a great spot for ridge soaring. And I also have
- 4:42Speaker 2: two of the most important people to me. There are others,
- 4:46Speaker 2: but yeah, sure two of them one of my brothers,
- 4:49Speaker 2: my youngest brother Tom, and one of my best friends
- 4:51Speaker 2: in the world, Ethan. They're both going to come out
- 4:53Speaker 2: from the East coast and they're going to join us.
- 4:55Speaker 2: We're going to do a four day backpacking route back
- 4:58Speaker 2: behind the Colorado National Mind amazing. Yeah, it's going to
- 5:01Speaker 2: be nice, lots of solitude. There's a wilderness area back
- 5:04Speaker 2: there that few people visit, and so in the few
- 5:07Speaker 2: times i've been there, I've seen like one or two
- 5:10Speaker 2: other people.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Oh, that'll be magic, that's amazing. Yeah, what about you,
- 5:13Speaker 3: what's going on with you?
- 5:14Speaker 1: You know, we're getting ready for the Overland Expo WES,
- 5:17Speaker 1: so we're starting to get ramped up for that. I'm
- 5:19Speaker 1: getting a new Scout with some updates that they've done.
- 5:22Speaker 1: We didn't have any issues with the scout we have now,
- 5:25Speaker 1: but they wanted to make sure that we were able
- 5:27Speaker 1: to evaluate some of these new updates that they've been doing,
- 5:30Speaker 1: which is great. They've got some new door configurations. They
- 5:32Speaker 1: simplify things a little bit, remove some weight, so it's
- 5:36Speaker 1: even more durable and minimalist than it was before, which
- 5:39Speaker 1: is for me, is awesome.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm excited to get that new one.
- 5:42Speaker 2: You like a camper that's very simple analog.
- 5:45Speaker 1: As analog as possible, because what you really want, I find,
- 5:48Speaker 1: or what should rephrase that, what I really want in
- 5:50Speaker 1: a camper is a quiet, comfortable, and then warm if
- 5:53Speaker 1: necessary place to sleep, and the Scout just totally rocks
- 5:57Speaker 1: that for a reasonable amount of money, so.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And without the complication of a lot of the systems
- 6:02Speaker 2: that are kind of standard in other campers.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and everybody's going to have different needs, and for me,
- 6:08Speaker 1: I'm happy with just having like a goal zero in
- 6:11Speaker 1: there and very minimal electronics and very minimal systems. I
- 6:14Speaker 1: don't need it to make hot water for me or
- 6:16Speaker 1: have a water pump or anything like that. I just
- 6:18Speaker 1: I want a really comfortable, quiet place to do work
- 6:21Speaker 1: and then a comfortable, quiet place to sleep at night
- 6:24Speaker 1: despite the conditions. So for me, the simplicity was king.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So a lot going on with us with the Overland
- 6:32Speaker 1: Expo coming up, that's an exciting time of year. Oh yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and we've got a couple more vehicle launches coming up
- 6:38Speaker 1: that are also really exciting. Some other new full sized
- 6:41Speaker 1: truck products that are coming out with a lot more
- 6:43Speaker 1: capability that we're going to be able to evaluate. The
- 6:46Speaker 1: full sized truck segment continues to blossom. Like we had
- 6:50Speaker 1: the power wagon that was it, but now we've got
- 6:52Speaker 1: super trucks and other vehicles with front and rear lockers
- 6:55Speaker 1: and everything else.
- 6:55Speaker 3: So it's pretty exciting.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard to deny that payload. Yeah, yeah, it
- 7:00Speaker 2: really makes a difference. I mean we were talking about
- 7:02Speaker 2: that in the truck this morning driving up of just
- 7:05Speaker 2: eighty four is just it's just like a great car
- 7:08Speaker 2: to drive.
- 7:08Speaker 3: It's just it's great on the highway.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I can take it to home depot and get whatever
- 7:12Speaker 1: I want to grab and throw a camper in the
- 7:14Speaker 1: back of it, or go do most trails. I mean,
- 7:16Speaker 1: they are definitely size limited. There's no question. It's not
- 7:19Speaker 1: as capable as like my g Wagon was, for example,
- 7:22Speaker 1: but a lot more trails than you'd think.
- 7:24Speaker 2: When you have that awesome low displacement diesel engine that
- 7:27Speaker 2: it just like gets incredible gas mileage considering the size
- 7:30Speaker 2: of that vehicle.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the winner for me. I mean, if I
- 7:33Speaker 1: was to say anything about the truck that I love
- 7:35Speaker 1: the most, it's that drive train. It's the three liter
- 7:37Speaker 1: turbo diesel with a ten speed automatic to get like
- 7:40Speaker 1: even in a four hundred mile evaluation range on fuel economy,
- 7:45Speaker 1: I've gotten as high as twenty four point eight miles
- 7:48Speaker 1: per gallon. It's got larger tires on it, right, it's
- 7:50Speaker 1: upgraded to a Beef cood Rich almost a thirty five.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It's got a little bit heavier wheels on it as well.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Other than that, it's pretty stock, but it's incredible the
- 7:59Speaker 1: gas miloge it gets Yeah. We were seeing twenty today
- 8:02Speaker 1: on I seventeen with a Putco rack and an i
- 8:05Speaker 1: caamper rooftent on the top of it.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah that doesn't exactly. Yeah, I mean it sticks out
- 8:10Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 8:11Speaker 1: It does, Yeah, it does. Yeah, so it's pretty interesting.
- 8:14Speaker 1: They just keep getting better and better. We'll talk about
- 8:16Speaker 1: getting yet better and better. I mean, we just tested
- 8:19Speaker 1: a super truck for a couple of days in Arizona,
- 8:21Speaker 1: which is a great experience. We're going to rift through
- 8:24Speaker 1: a couple of the considerations around the vehicle, but Matt
- 8:27Speaker 1: and I thought it would be fun to talk through
- 8:30Speaker 1: some of the key specs. I actually ran out of
- 8:32Speaker 1: room on my piece of paper and I needed to
- 8:34Speaker 1: move some.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Of the segments.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Now, because there's so many crazy things about this vehicle,
- 8:39Speaker 1: and we can start with something that has nothing to
- 8:41Speaker 1: do with overlanding, but it has.
- 8:43Speaker 3: To do with life is short and you might as
- 8:44Speaker 3: well have some fun. Joy. Yeah, there's just joy. Yeah, exactly.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Yeah, this is right within the joy category, which is
- 8:50Speaker 1: zero to sixty and three seconds, which we experienced oh
- 8:54Speaker 1: the other day.
- 8:54Speaker 2: We have the go pro footage to prove it.
- 8:56Speaker 1: We do, and we'll probably be able to put that
- 8:59Speaker 1: here in the podcast, like our expressions.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I already watched mine. I have a stupid look on
- 9:04Speaker 2: my face. You know, obviously I haven't seen yet a
- 9:07Speaker 2: big grin afterwards.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Oh I haven't. I haven't watched mine yet. That's so, yeah,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I should pull it up right now. Get like the
- 9:13Speaker 1: real time the reaction of your reaction. Yeah, you like
- 9:16Speaker 1: you feel your vision actually narrowing because the acceleration is
- 9:20Speaker 1: so prodigious.
- 9:21Speaker 2: It's percent Yeah, just getting pressed back into that seat
- 9:24Speaker 2: like you're in a rocket ship.
- 9:25Speaker 3: It felt like a rocket ship.
- 9:27Speaker 1: And it just doesn't make any of the traditional internal
- 9:29Speaker 1: combustion engine noises. So it's just just like this violent acceleration,
- 9:33Speaker 1: which was that was super fun. Oh yeah, so we'll
- 9:36Speaker 1: go into that a little bit more. And it achieves
- 9:38Speaker 1: that with one thousand horsepower and twelve hundred foot pounds
- 9:42Speaker 1: of torque at the motor GMC hummer they talk about
- 9:46Speaker 1: eleven thousand, five hundred foot pounds of torque, and we
- 9:51Speaker 1: actually found out like what does that actually mean?
- 9:53Speaker 2: It takes a math to get there. It's kind of
- 9:55Speaker 2: unique to an electric vehicle, well, well not just an
- 9:57Speaker 2: electric vehicle any but a lot of vehicles if you
- 10:00Speaker 2: did the math out exact way they're doing, could advertise
- 10:03Speaker 2: a higher torque output, right correct.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It seems like this insane number. It's actually requires some context.
- 10:10Speaker 1: So the eleven five hundred foot pounds of torque is
- 10:14Speaker 1: the torque that's at the wheels and which means that
- 10:16Speaker 1: it's going through they have a motor drive unit, and
- 10:19Speaker 1: that motor drive unit has gearing, and that gearing affects
- 10:22Speaker 1: the leverage of the torque that's available from the motor. Now,
- 10:26Speaker 1: the thing that we don't know for sure is how
- 10:28Speaker 1: the tire diameter how that factors in, Like is that
- 10:31Speaker 1: when they say at the wheel, is that at the
- 10:33Speaker 1: hub of the wheel, is that at the outer diameter
- 10:35Speaker 1: of the wheel. It doesn't specify that, so that might
- 10:38Speaker 1: be interesting for us to find out at some point.
- 10:40Speaker 1: As an example, we were watching a YouTube video trying
- 10:43Speaker 1: to learn the difference between the two and the guy
- 10:46Speaker 1: who was speaking was talking about the example of a
- 10:49Speaker 1: Dodge Damon. So that is a vehicle that has just
- 10:53Speaker 1: under one thousand foot pounds of torque at the motor
- 10:56Speaker 1: and because it goes through a transmission with a first
- 10:59Speaker 1: gear of four point set and two and then goes
- 11:01Speaker 1: through a final drive in the rear axle. I believe
- 11:03Speaker 1: it was three point h nine was the number that
- 11:05Speaker 1: Punds right that he used. It actually ends up generating
- 11:09Speaker 1: fourteen thousand plus foot pounds of torque at the wheel.
- 11:13Speaker 1: When you compare them like a Dodge Damon, it's a
- 11:15Speaker 1: It is a crazy fast car effect. I think it's
- 11:17Speaker 1: one of the fastest products zero to sixty quarter mile
- 11:21Speaker 1: production vehicles that you can buy.
- 11:23Speaker 3: So that's amazing.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So when we put that in the context of the SuperTruck,
- 11:27Speaker 1: it just shows how fast it is.
- 11:29Speaker 3: So those numbers are similar.
- 11:30Speaker 1: In fact, the damon makes more foot pounds of torque
- 11:33Speaker 1: at the wheel than the super truck does. This ten
- 11:36Speaker 1: thousand pound hummer goes zero to sixty and three seconds.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I mean, real's that's the part that really catches you
- 11:42Speaker 2: off guard. It's a ten thousand pound vehicle. It is
- 11:45Speaker 2: not small at all. No, it's huge, like just the
- 11:47Speaker 2: dimensions of it, not just the weight. Yeah, it drives
- 11:50Speaker 2: like a smaller vehicle.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Yeah, which we found out during the testing and we'll
- 11:54Speaker 1: talk about that in a second. It has three motors
- 11:56Speaker 1: on board. It has two motors in the rear so
- 11:59Speaker 1: it has this very interesting like combined motor drive unit.
- 12:03Speaker 1: The castings that keep these things attached to the chassis
- 12:05Speaker 1: or massive. It's independent front and rear with front and
- 12:09Speaker 1: rear steering, and the half shafts are massive. I mean
- 12:13Speaker 1: they look like like something that you know, you would
- 12:15Speaker 1: see in a F four fifty or something like that.
- 12:17Speaker 3: They're absolutely massive. I remember you pointing that out.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I mean when we were looking at the when they
- 12:22Speaker 2: had the bear you know, the ultium platform chassis for
- 12:25Speaker 2: us to have a look at. And I found that
- 12:27Speaker 2: really interesting and I also was really interested. I mean
- 12:29Speaker 2: you just mentioned it has the three motors. In electric vehicles,
- 12:32Speaker 2: I think we've gotten used to seeing the motor unit
- 12:36Speaker 2: in the hub right at the wheel. But yeah, but
- 12:41Speaker 2: the Hummer EV is different. It is the motors are
- 12:44Speaker 2: on the inside on the chassis, and that provides actually
- 12:47Speaker 2: some some advantages in some ways.
- 12:49Speaker 3: It does.
- 12:50Speaker 1: It provides it allows for the opportunity for a larger
- 12:52Speaker 1: motor with more power. It also allows you to do
- 12:55Speaker 1: some really effective cooling around it.
- 12:56Speaker 3: That was the one that was the one I remembered. Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and I know that the Rivian, for example, under
- 13:01Speaker 1: certain conditions, the motors can get really hot, low speed,
- 13:04Speaker 1: high torque, low airflow. The ones in the wheel, they
- 13:07Speaker 1: can only dissipate heat so much whereas they had during
- 13:10Speaker 1: movement right correct, Yeah, like low speed movement, whereas the
- 13:15Speaker 1: hummer has these oil cooled. The way that the engineer
- 13:18Speaker 1: described it to us is that you have this oil
- 13:21Speaker 1: reservoir and it pumps oil through the electric motors, and
- 13:24Speaker 1: then that oil goes through a heat exchanger which is
- 13:27Speaker 1: actually a glycol loop. And as I remember, they use
- 13:29Speaker 1: some of that also to generate heat within the cabin.
- 13:32Speaker 1: They do a lot of very cool things that help
- 13:35Speaker 1: them do that. And then each individual battery pack has
- 13:38Speaker 1: twenty They have twenty four battery packs, twenty four cells
- 13:40Speaker 1: per pack. Each one of those is cooled with a
- 13:43Speaker 1: cooling plate, so very clever how they manage heat with
- 13:47Speaker 1: all of that current. I think when we were getting
- 13:50Speaker 1: to the trailhead, it was this monster Arizona storm, and
- 13:53Speaker 1: I was saying that, like, how does it feel to
- 13:55Speaker 1: be like in this torrential rainstorm, sitting on one point
- 13:58Speaker 1: three jigawatts of I mean, there's so much power, Like
- 14:02Speaker 1: you feel like you can power an entire block with
- 14:04Speaker 1: that thing.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Totally.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You need the flex capacitor right behind your shoulder.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I didn't want.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Like one of the engineers said, like, if you look
- 14:10Speaker 1: in the icons of all the icons you can pick
- 14:12Speaker 1: for the accessories, I think there might be a flex
- 14:14Speaker 1: capacitor in there. So it's just fun. The little of
- 14:16Speaker 1: the little easter eggs. I think you're really awesome. Totally,
- 14:19Speaker 1: three motors, two in the rear, one in the front,
- 14:21Speaker 1: and then it does have a differential in the front
- 14:24Speaker 1: with an electric locker. The front is a E locker
- 14:28Speaker 1: electrically activated mechanical driver actuated locker. In the rear, I
- 14:32Speaker 1: would call it like a V locker, a virtual locker.
- 14:35Speaker 1: So it has two motor drives so they match the
- 14:38Speaker 1: motor speeds very tightly. There are some some factors that
- 14:42Speaker 1: can influence that, but they match the motor speeds very
- 14:45Speaker 1: tight in rpm. So you end up with essentially the
- 14:48Speaker 1: effect of a locker with no wheel spin from one
- 14:51Speaker 1: side to the other. But it's very clever how it
- 14:54Speaker 1: does it because even like in a really tight turn,
- 14:56Speaker 1: if it's noticing a lot of scrub then the vehicle
- 14:59Speaker 1: can actually loosen.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Up that locker a little bit.
- 15:01Speaker 1: So I didn't get quite the same scrubbing that you
- 15:03Speaker 1: would feel with a mechanical locker.
- 15:05Speaker 2: So it's not kind of fighting you on those tight
- 15:07Speaker 2: turns and things like that.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Correct, And it also allows them to put in some
- 15:10Speaker 1: safety guards as well, where if one particular wheel is
- 15:15Speaker 1: at some extreme amount of torque or extreme amount of pressure,
- 15:19Speaker 1: they could probably back that off a little bit to
- 15:21Speaker 1: help preserve some of the mechanical components. So even though
- 15:24Speaker 1: it says it's locked and in every effect it was
- 15:28Speaker 1: like yesterday, it worked exactly how you would want a
- 15:30Speaker 1: locker to work. So I don't want to take anything
- 15:32Speaker 1: away from this. I actually think like it's an electric
- 15:35Speaker 1: electronic locker, but better so it does all of the
- 15:37Speaker 1: things you want.
- 15:38Speaker 3: An electro smart locker.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It is, yeah, for sure, which is which is awesome,
- 15:42Speaker 1: very interesting how they set that up. It's got Ultravision,
- 15:45Speaker 1: which is their eighteen camera view camera system.
- 15:48Speaker 2: A number of camera views has insane, Yeah, and it's awesome.
- 15:52Speaker 3: It is really impressive.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I mean especially for a vehicle of that size, you know,
- 15:55Speaker 2: I mean like there's no ego in this, Like if
- 15:57Speaker 2: you're piloting a vehicle of that size, it's so helpful.
- 16:00Speaker 2: To have some cameras to look it really just gives
- 16:02Speaker 2: you a lot more confidence as a driver.
- 16:04Speaker 3: It was your favorite view overall.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I mean, I think the one that felt most practical
- 16:08Speaker 2: to me was was just the front view, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 2: below like kind of grill height looking forward, because there
- 16:14Speaker 2: are a lot of instances on the test drive where
- 16:16Speaker 2: you know, we're cresting steep little sections where all I
- 16:19Speaker 2: could see was sky right, and then I could just
- 16:21Speaker 2: a big hood, Yeah it is, and you know, being
- 16:24Speaker 2: able to easily glance down at the infotainment screen, which
- 16:26Speaker 2: was giant, it was like twelve inches I think at least,
- 16:29Speaker 2: and being able to just drive off of that for
- 16:31Speaker 2: you know, two seconds until I had a view of
- 16:33Speaker 2: the trail out the windshield again, it was It was fantastic.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I like that combination of that view with the overhead
- 16:40Speaker 1: view where it's this compilation of all of the camera
- 16:42Speaker 1: views that they stitch into this like basically like a
- 16:46Speaker 1: drone view perspective of where the vehicle's out on the trail.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I found that really helpful as well. I like the
- 16:51Speaker 1: fact that it had those under chassis cameras. Yeah, they
- 16:55Speaker 1: use a hydrophobic coating that helps to keep water from
- 17:00Speaker 1: collecting on the lenses, and then they even have little
- 17:02Speaker 1: sprayers to clean them off because of course under the
- 17:05Speaker 1: chassis gets a bunch of dirt and grime. But the
- 17:07Speaker 1: thing you notice right away is this underbody is completely flat.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks it almost looks like like a toy
- 17:13Speaker 2: car on the bottom. There's nothing to get hung up,
- 17:16Speaker 2: that's right. It's just like a smooth, one giant smooth
- 17:19Speaker 2: skid plate that can just glide off of anything.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And they had so many specifications around preventing these batteries
- 17:25Speaker 1: from getting punctured on rocks and everything else like that,
- 17:28Speaker 1: because they wanted to build the ultimate electric off road vehicle,
- 17:31Speaker 1: so they had all these intense requirements around performance. But
- 17:35Speaker 1: that means you're rock crawling and everything else. So you
- 17:37Speaker 1: can come down on skid plates and it's just this
- 17:39Speaker 1: full length boron steel skid plate, so super strong, super light,
- 17:45Speaker 1: a high degree of puncture resistance, and totally flat. There's
- 17:48Speaker 1: just a couple of little holes for probably air cooling
- 17:51Speaker 1: and stuff like that.
- 17:52Speaker 3: But yeah, pretty interesting.
- 17:53Speaker 1: We're used to seeing exhaust hanging down and differentials hanging down,
- 17:56Speaker 1: and shock mounts hanging down and all of that is
- 17:58Speaker 1: tucked up with the end of suspension and that skid plate.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a whole different mentality that you can take
- 18:04Speaker 2: onto the trail when you're not so worried about getting
- 18:06Speaker 2: something off or damaging something that's going to disable your vehicle.
- 18:09Speaker 3: And then what did you think about the range at
- 18:11Speaker 3: three hundred and fifty miles.
- 18:13Speaker 2: We drove all day? Yeah, literally all day had power
- 18:16Speaker 2: to spare. When we got back to our final destination.
- 18:18Speaker 1: We did I think we came in at just about
- 18:20Speaker 1: fifty percent based upon the bar graph.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, we left in the morning, we drove an
- 18:25Speaker 3: hour to the trail, an hour of highway driving. Yeah,
- 18:28Speaker 3: and then we which we drove entirely at the speed limit.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Of course, you know, would never exceed, never the speed
- 18:34Speaker 2: limit or any conditions, never hours of off road driving.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Yeah. And then we did it twice.
- 18:39Speaker 1: So we had a pre lunch off road route and
- 18:42Speaker 1: then a post lunch off road route and they were
- 18:44Speaker 1: several I think probably about two hours at least each.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Now it wasn't non stop, you know, we would pause
- 18:50Speaker 2: because we were in a group. But sure it also
- 18:52Speaker 2: wasn't like getting out every five minutes and hanging out
- 18:54Speaker 2: like we were driving.
- 18:56Speaker 3: That's right.
- 18:56Speaker 2: You know, some obstacles that required some significant accel or
- 19:00Speaker 2: input for sure, you know, not just a forest service road.
- 19:03Speaker 2: There were some technical sections.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I thought, so yeah, and then to come back another
- 19:07Speaker 1: hour drive back to the hotel and we got there
- 19:09Speaker 1: and we were like half a tank, half a battery,
- 19:12Speaker 1: half a battery.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it was pretty impressive. That surprised me.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I think I think a lot of people who are
- 19:18Speaker 2: concerned about range with EV's. I don't want to say
- 19:21Speaker 2: it's unfounded, but there's an anxiety that we have of
- 19:24Speaker 2: not being able to fill up kind of at will
- 19:27Speaker 2: an EV. But I think that in practice, when you
- 19:29Speaker 2: get behind the wheel and you and you really take
- 19:31Speaker 2: one out that you know, one purely an EV, not
- 19:34Speaker 2: a hybrid, but an EV that has a significant range
- 19:37Speaker 2: like this, you find that it's fine.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, And they didn't they say that like with this,
- 19:41Speaker 1: with the equivalent of a supercharger, you can go from
- 19:44Speaker 1: twenty to eighty percent and forty minutes. Was that the
- 19:46Speaker 1: spec that we had. That's that's what I remember hearing. Yeah,
- 19:49Speaker 1: that's impressive. I mean like that, you know, just go
- 19:51Speaker 1: have a nice coffee or enjoy lunch and.
- 19:53Speaker 3: I'm ready to go.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I may be mistaken, but I remember them saying you
- 19:56Speaker 2: could get one hundred miles in ten minutes of charging.
- 19:59Speaker 3: That's fast. Yeah, Yeah, that's great. Yeah.
- 20:01Speaker 1: And that's all the things we're learning. I mean, we're
- 20:03Speaker 1: just the beginning of all that, and they're learning stuff
- 20:07Speaker 1: so quickly. There's so much pressure on innovation in the segment.
- 20:10Speaker 1: They know the resistance that consumers have to electric vehicles
- 20:13Speaker 1: and they're actively trying to take away those reasons to
- 20:16Speaker 1: say no. The suspension is it's four wheel independent air
- 20:20Speaker 1: bag suspension. So it has currently three modes on height.
- 20:25Speaker 1: There's an entry access mode height. When you go to
- 20:27Speaker 1: watts to freedom for the zero to sixty launch, it
- 20:30Speaker 1: lowers the vehicle down quite a bit as well automatically,
- 20:33Speaker 1: and then it has like a normal mode that you
- 20:35Speaker 1: can drive around, and then it has this off road mode.
- 20:39Speaker 1: With a future update, they said that there's going to
- 20:41Speaker 1: be an extract mode which essentially lifts the Hummer six inches.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And we saw one parked out in the parking lot
- 20:48Speaker 1: in extract mode and it's like it is way up there.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I mean, the arms are at quite the angle. But
- 20:54Speaker 1: if you were a high centered on a ledge, or
- 20:56Speaker 1: you were stuck in a little bit of mud, or
- 20:58Speaker 1: you came down on a log or something like that,
- 21:00Speaker 1: it'd be really easy to get out with that. I
- 21:02Speaker 1: thought that was really clever. Yeah, it's got this infinity
- 21:05Speaker 1: roof that I thought was really interesting.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Did you think so when we're on the trail and
- 21:09Speaker 2: it hailed on us, because of course, we got some
- 21:12Speaker 2: really interesting weather out there, which is actually what we
- 21:14Speaker 2: want when we're totally testing a vehicle like this, you know,
- 21:17Speaker 2: we want to kind of have some extremes to see
- 21:19Speaker 2: how it performs. I remember I was distinctly aware of
- 21:22Speaker 2: how much glass there was in the roof and how
- 21:24Speaker 2: much visibility I had because the hail was hitting it
- 21:27Speaker 2: and it was like amplified.
- 21:29Speaker 3: It was totally.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah, but having that view is really it's really pleasant.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I don't know, I mean I think I think it
- 21:35Speaker 1: makes it kind of like a convertible. I mean, you
- 21:37Speaker 1: can take out all four of those panels they all
- 21:39Speaker 1: store in the front.
- 21:40Speaker 2: In the front. Yeah, the rear window rolls down so
- 21:44Speaker 2: kind of Forerunner style. The whole thing goes exactly so
- 21:47Speaker 2: you really do feel like you're in an open air vehicle.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I thought, yeah, that was pretty clever. Yeah, it's really nice. Especially,
- 21:52Speaker 2: I mean, like many of us go on the trails
- 21:54Speaker 2: to enjoy and be in the nature, and so that
- 21:57Speaker 2: really kind of gives you that opportunity.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Well, and speaking of that, that was one of my
- 22:02Speaker 1: most profound takeaways was the silence of the electric vehicle
- 22:05Speaker 1: on the trail. I thought that was one of the
- 22:07Speaker 1: most pleasant off roading experiences I had had in that regard.
- 22:11Speaker 1: In fact, one of the spotters was bringing somebody down
- 22:13Speaker 1: an obstacle and then here comes this like little ground squirrel.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Completely could care less that.
- 22:19Speaker 1: This vehicle was coming towards it, because it doesn't sound like,
- 22:21Speaker 1: you know, like a UTV screaming like a twelve year old.
- 22:24Speaker 3: I mean, it just it's like, did.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I just say that. It's like, it's very quiet. It's
- 22:29Speaker 1: just super chill going through the trail. And then when
- 22:32Speaker 1: we were coming back, we're all on a line. I
- 22:34Speaker 1: mean there was ten vehicles or more maybe yeah, and
- 22:37Speaker 1: we're all just cruising along total silence, and here comes
- 22:40Speaker 1: this little havilina and he's just he's totally carefreeze not he.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Wasn't running, he wasn't taking off because no stress. He
- 22:46Speaker 2: was just kind of like going about his normal business. Yeah.
- 22:49Speaker 1: And some of the engineers, one of the engineers we
- 22:52Speaker 1: rode with in the morning era, and he was talking
- 22:54Speaker 1: about how he just like would surprise deer on a
- 22:57Speaker 1: regular basis with this vehicle because it was so silde.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I mean in my few other experiences in vehicles that
- 23:03Speaker 2: are in this case of hybrid, the four by e,
- 23:06Speaker 2: but driving under electric power, I had the same experience
- 23:08Speaker 2: and with the hummer too, I mean, yeah, it's so
- 23:11Speaker 2: pleasant that just the silence, not listening to like motors
- 23:14Speaker 2: just idling and.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's not the I mean, I love internal
- 23:17Speaker 1: combustion for all of the right reasons, but this is actually,
- 23:22Speaker 1: I think an argument for it. It is you're very
- 23:25Speaker 1: much connected to the experience. We had this breeze coming
- 23:28Speaker 1: through the window. It was just perfect. It was really
- 23:30Speaker 1: I thought, pleasant to drive with no noise. And you know,
- 23:33Speaker 1: everybody else appreciates that too. I mean the campers that
- 23:36Speaker 1: you're driving by, and the animals and the hikers, and
- 23:39Speaker 1: we're a multi use community and we all need to
- 23:42Speaker 1: do our part to make it as pleasant as possible
- 23:45Speaker 1: for everybody.
- 23:46Speaker 3: And I think this is a big step in the
- 23:47Speaker 3: right direction, So I would agree.
- 23:49Speaker 1: It comes with thirty five inch tall tires, but they
- 23:52Speaker 1: designed it to fit thirty sevens, which I thought was
- 23:54Speaker 1: really clever. So with no modifications, thirty seven's bolt up.
- 23:58Speaker 1: So the wheelwell clearance suitable for thirty sevens. It'll clearly
- 24:02Speaker 1: affect range and some other things. And I don't even
- 24:05Speaker 1: know that it needs it. This thing is really capable.
- 24:07Speaker 1: But somebody will want to put thirty sevens on their hummer, I'm.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Sure, I mean, yeah, I do already.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about the full length boron skid plates.
- 24:14Speaker 1: What'd you think of the four wheel steering?
- 24:15Speaker 3: So cool?
- 24:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so cool and it's it's new, but it's
- 24:19Speaker 2: not And I think GMC even has they've produced other
- 24:23Speaker 2: vehicles that have this feature. Yep, if I'm not mistaken,
- 24:26Speaker 2: I don't remember which vehicle it was.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Yeah, like early twenty ten they had a Denali that
- 24:31Speaker 1: had I think they call it quadra steer or something
- 24:33Speaker 1: like that, but it did have steering in the rear.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I was shocked.
- 24:37Speaker 2: I mean, as someone who drives a large vehicle as
- 24:40Speaker 2: my daily driver, you know, I've gotten used to that.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I remember that feeling of initially getting behind the wheel
- 24:45Speaker 2: and being slightly uncomfortable with the clearances and trying to
- 24:47Speaker 2: get familiar with turning radius and stuff like that, and
- 24:50Speaker 2: hitting a few curves in the process. And in the
- 24:52Speaker 2: Hummer EV it is I mean, it's like a game changer.
- 24:55Speaker 2: It is when you're behind the wheel. It is executed
- 24:58Speaker 2: so well. Though it doesn't feel like something alien, it
- 25:03Speaker 2: just kind of feels right, and I mean.
- 25:05Speaker 3: It feels impossible, like how did I how did I
- 25:08Speaker 3: just make that? Make that turn? Yeah?
- 25:10Speaker 2: I mean we were navigating some really narrow parts of
- 25:13Speaker 2: trail with cactus right up to the sides of the tracks,
- 25:17Speaker 2: and I mean it just kind of danced in between them.
- 25:19Speaker 2: And it's fun following another Hummer EV and seeing that
- 25:23Speaker 2: in action because the back kind of like swings out
- 25:26Speaker 2: just a little bit and it's crazy and I thought
- 25:27Speaker 2: it was really cool too. Across the different driving modes,
- 25:30Speaker 2: they change the turning rate of the rear rails, so like,
- 25:34Speaker 2: for instance, in terrain mode you get the most extreme
- 25:37Speaker 2: I forget what the race at.
- 25:38Speaker 1: One point two to one, So yeah, the rear is
- 25:40Speaker 1: actually turning faster than the front.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Right, and so it kind of helps you pivot around
- 25:44Speaker 2: obstacles much easier. And then you know, when you're in
- 25:46Speaker 2: off road or just kind of standard driving mode, it's
- 25:49Speaker 2: it's much like.
- 25:50Speaker 1: It was point six or something. So, yeah, the rear
- 25:52Speaker 1: is kind of catching up to the front. Yeah, interesting,
- 25:54Speaker 1: I thought it was. And it makes sense because off road, you're,
- 25:57Speaker 1: especially in terrain mode, you're going very slow, so it
- 26:00Speaker 1: gives the rear steering time to catch up, whereas if
- 26:03Speaker 1: you were on the street and you were going through
- 26:05Speaker 1: dynamic driving situations, you wouldn't want the rear to be
- 26:09Speaker 1: trying to catch up to the driver inputs, which are
- 26:12Speaker 1: very direct, So it does make sense that the rear
- 26:14Speaker 1: would be slower to engage with that, and then you
- 26:17Speaker 1: can turn it off or you can go into crab
- 26:19Speaker 1: walk mode, which was very cool. You have to do
- 26:21Speaker 1: this long press, which it seemed like a like an
- 26:23Speaker 1: unnecessarily long press, like half of that time or a
- 26:26Speaker 1: third of that time. I think makes a lot of sense.
- 26:28Speaker 1: I understand why they need you to confirm it because
- 26:31Speaker 1: the vehicle all of a sudden starts just to move
- 26:33Speaker 1: in a direction that you better hope that you expected
- 26:36Speaker 1: it to do.
- 26:37Speaker 2: That I saw, like you turn the wheel one hundred
- 26:40Speaker 2: and eighty degrees, but you're just kind of shifting.
- 26:42Speaker 3: You're not actually it was.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not actually turning right, yeah, And so I
- 26:46Speaker 1: found a practical application for it.
- 26:48Speaker 3: We were getting trying.
- 26:49Speaker 1: To do some video work and we were in this
- 26:52Speaker 1: line of hummers and they were all very tight, like
- 26:54Speaker 1: front to back, I mean, like a parallel parking situation.
- 26:57Speaker 1: So I turned on crab walk mode and I basically
- 26:59Speaker 1: just came out out of the line of trucks to
- 27:01Speaker 1: the side, just scooted sideways out and off I went.
- 27:05Speaker 1: It was pretty cool.
- 27:06Speaker 2: It was very clever, and I think it's kind of
- 27:08Speaker 2: it points to one of the funny things about just
- 27:10Speaker 2: all of the technology and new features in this vehicle.
- 27:12Speaker 2: You have to like rethink about what driving a car
- 27:16Speaker 2: is like because some of these new features are so
- 27:19Speaker 2: alien to the average driver. It's like you have to
- 27:22Speaker 2: come up with you have to figure out what the
- 27:23Speaker 2: scenarios are where these features become useful. But they are useful,
- 27:27Speaker 2: that's the thing. They're not just gimmicks. I mean, there
- 27:29Speaker 2: is a real time and place for that crab mode,
- 27:31Speaker 2: just as there is sure the four wheel steering yep.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think crab mode would be great in
- 27:37Speaker 1: compact city environments where you're dealing with really tight tolerances.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And then on our way back out, in one of
- 27:43Speaker 1: the lead vehicles, they got high centered coming around a corner,
- 27:47Speaker 1: so they just turned on crab mode and then pointed
- 27:49Speaker 1: the tires to the right, and they basically just moved
- 27:52Speaker 1: the vehicle off of the obstacle by shifting it sideways
- 27:56Speaker 1: as opposed to putting it further and deeper into the
- 27:59Speaker 1: skid plates. So that was just like, it was very
- 28:01Speaker 1: clever and it would be easy to dismiss it as
- 28:04Speaker 1: a gimmick, but it's not a gimmick. It's pretty impressive.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I don't think you'll use it very often, and if
- 28:10Speaker 1: it didn't have it, it wouldn't be the end of the world.
- 28:12Speaker 1: But the rear wheel steering for tightening the turning radius,
- 28:15Speaker 1: it's amazing. It's actually very similar turning radius to a
- 28:18Speaker 1: two do orjup wrangler Wiles nuts. Yeah for something that big.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Yep.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And a special thanks to this week's sponsor, Black Series Trailers.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Have you seen how much more it's going to cost
- 28:32Speaker 1: you to go r ving this spring? With gas prices skyrocketing,
- 28:36Speaker 1: those overlanding adventures may seem like they're going to be
- 28:38Speaker 1: a lot shorter or maybe even going out the window,
- 28:41Speaker 1: or are they. Our April sale will have you fueled
- 28:44Speaker 1: up and ready to roll because Black Series has a
- 28:47Speaker 1: high ticket gas card for you. All you need to
- 28:49Speaker 1: do is purchase a Black Series RV between the tenth
- 28:52Speaker 1: and the twentieth of April and we'll give you a
- 28:54Speaker 1: gas card valued up to three thousand dollars.
- 28:57Speaker 3: I want to learn more. Is it our website at
- 29:00Speaker 3: black Series dot net.
- 29:04Speaker 1: All right, we did ask the question about payload because
- 29:07Speaker 1: that's important to us, and on these Edition one vehicles,
- 29:10Speaker 1: which are heavily loaded with accessories and all the accessories, right,
- 29:14Speaker 1: I think yeah, pretty much. Maybe not the dealer installed ones,
- 29:18Speaker 1: but I think it has all of all the features,
- 29:20Speaker 1: the features that you would get on a build. It
- 29:23Speaker 1: still had a thirteen hundred pound payload. Now what's interesting
- 29:26Speaker 1: about that is that you can toe with this vehicle.
- 29:28Speaker 1: So if you're towing a trailer, you have to figure
- 29:30Speaker 1: in the fact that you may have a five hundred
- 29:32Speaker 1: pound tongue weight, which goes against your payload. So now
- 29:35Speaker 1: you're at eight hundred pounds. If you've got four full
- 29:37Speaker 1: sized guys, you're banging up against that payload really quick.
- 29:41Speaker 1: So it's important to note that thirteen hundred pounds of
- 29:44Speaker 1: payload is acceptable for sure, But what they said was
- 29:48Speaker 1: that other models that are less contented will have more payload.
- 29:51Speaker 1: But it is I think important to frame it within
- 29:53Speaker 1: the context of you don't really need to modify this car.
- 29:56Speaker 1: It's not like you've got to like, oh, I've got
- 29:57Speaker 1: to put sliders on it. I got to put skid plates,
- 29:59Speaker 1: and I got to put you know, heavy duty you
- 30:01Speaker 1: know axles, and I got to put in big tire.
- 30:03Speaker 1: It's got all of that already, So there's not going
- 30:06Speaker 1: to be many accessories you're going to put on it.
- 30:08Speaker 1: In my mind, that would take up payload.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, I mean that makes a lot of
- 30:12Speaker 2: sense to me. When when you, hopefully some of you
- 30:14Speaker 2: get get the opportunity to drive one of these at
- 30:16Speaker 2: some point, even if it's just for fun for a day,
- 30:19Speaker 2: I think you'll find that, Yeah, you're not left wanting
- 30:22Speaker 2: for anything, not really features wise that it doesn't have.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty impressive. Yeah, let's talk about supercrews a
- 30:27Speaker 3: little bit.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yeah, super Cruz is super cool.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Yeah, because we're going to talk about the road driving
- 30:32Speaker 1: impressions that you had, Well, it's a good place to start.
- 30:34Speaker 2: So super Gruz is the Hummer's version of autopilot. You
- 30:39Speaker 2: basically push a button and it takes over, so it
- 30:42Speaker 2: does the steering for you. It will lane change, it
- 30:45Speaker 2: maintains speed, it will overtake other cars.
- 30:47Speaker 3: When it first did the lane change, how was that.
- 30:49Speaker 2: It caught me off card, you know, because of us Yeah, yeah,
- 30:53Speaker 2: I didn't know what was going on. I came to
- 30:54Speaker 2: grab the wheel, you know, I didn't take over, but
- 30:57Speaker 2: I brought my hands back immediately. And in the reason
- 31:00Speaker 2: being because the only other experience I have in an
- 31:03Speaker 2: autonomous car would be like a Tesla And this may
- 31:06Speaker 2: have changed now because it's been quite a few years
- 31:08Speaker 2: since I drove that vehicle, But in the autopilot mode
- 31:11Speaker 2: that that had, I would have to manually put the
- 31:14Speaker 2: turn signal on to have it change lanes for me. Sure,
- 31:17Speaker 2: So the adaptive cruise control would would obviously take into
- 31:20Speaker 2: effect immediately when it was under autopilot, and it would,
- 31:22Speaker 2: you know, would catch up to a car but maintain
- 31:24Speaker 2: a safe following distance and slow down if it needed to,
- 31:26Speaker 2: but it wouldn't change lanes. And that was a trip. Yeah,
- 31:29Speaker 2: it was good. It was entertaining.
- 31:31Speaker 1: And yeah, so for those that are listening, this thing
- 31:33Speaker 1: will actually check the lane next to you, check the
- 31:36Speaker 1: blind spot, look for an opening. It will put on
- 31:39Speaker 1: the blinker, it will move over a lane, it will
- 31:41Speaker 1: pass the car, and then it will go back into
- 31:43Speaker 1: the lane.
- 31:44Speaker 3: That it needs to if it needs to do that.
- 31:46Speaker 3: It's like unbelievable, it's.
- 31:48Speaker 2: So yeah, it's so wild, and it's it's so nice though.
- 31:51Speaker 2: I mean again, this is the kind of thing that
- 31:54Speaker 2: some people look at as like novelty, but when you
- 31:56Speaker 2: use it, you immediately see the value of it. I
- 31:59Speaker 2: mean talk about relaxing driving experience, like you just kind
- 32:02Speaker 2: of sit back and you can't disengage completely obviously, like
- 32:06Speaker 2: we had times where the supercrews shut off and I
- 32:10Speaker 2: had to take over. And partially that is because it's
- 32:13Speaker 2: such a new vehicle and their their data that allows
- 32:16Speaker 2: for Supercrews operate is somewhat limited right now. I think
- 32:19Speaker 2: they said they have about two hundred thousand miles of
- 32:21Speaker 2: roads mapped where you can use Supercrews, which certainly sounds
- 32:24Speaker 2: like a lot. But you know, in the context of
- 32:26Speaker 2: the whole of you know, the US, that means there's
- 32:28Speaker 2: still a lot of roads that are.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Not Yeah, we had several roads that like highways that
- 32:32Speaker 1: didn't have it when we were doing the drive, but
- 32:34Speaker 1: you know, the one on one did and that was
- 32:36Speaker 1: just like to watch it effortlessly. I mean better then,
- 32:40Speaker 1: I will say, better than the average driver by quite
- 32:42Speaker 1: some margin because it stayed right in the lane. It
- 32:45Speaker 1: wasn't wavering. In fact, I think I told you, I'm like,
- 32:48Speaker 1: don't you feel like you need to pick up your
- 32:49Speaker 1: phone and start texting?
- 32:50Speaker 3: Oh?
- 32:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's just what's happening right now is that
- 32:53Speaker 1: people are just picking up their phone and texting. They
- 32:55Speaker 1: don't have the vehicles not paying attention for them.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Yep.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Like, I'm not suggesting for a moment moment that people
- 33:00Speaker 1: should be reading or texting while they're in super cruse,
- 33:03Speaker 1: but you know people are going to do that. So
- 33:05Speaker 1: the world is still better off if this technology exists.
- 33:08Speaker 3: It's a lot less.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Likely that the vehicle is going to run into something
- 33:11Speaker 1: or go off the road and into a ditch.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, yeah, those momentary times where we're not
- 33:16Speaker 2: paying attention, like having something operating and trying to maintain
- 33:21Speaker 2: a trajectory in speed and avoiding obstacles is great. Now,
- 33:24Speaker 2: I did struggle a little bit with some scenarios, Like
- 33:28Speaker 2: there was that one kind of interchange that we went
- 33:31Speaker 2: through where it told me it said supercrews, you know,
- 33:34Speaker 2: disengaged actor turning off. You had deactivating and I had
- 33:37Speaker 2: to take over. So that's not entirely surprising. You know,
- 33:40Speaker 2: that's kind of a complex scenario, and I'm fine with that. Sure,
- 33:45Speaker 2: if I need to be the driver again, that's fine.
- 33:47Speaker 2: And I think they do a great job of visually
- 33:49Speaker 2: making it clear that it's going to stop. There's an
- 33:52Speaker 2: actual kind of like illuminated panel that's embedded in the
- 33:56Speaker 2: steering wheel that lights up so it's green when Supercreus
- 33:59Speaker 2: is on and it turns red and it's red in
- 34:02Speaker 2: your face, so you kind of it was obvious to
- 34:03Speaker 2: me that I needed to take over.
- 34:05Speaker 1: It was just so neat to watch, unbelievable. And then
- 34:08Speaker 1: what else did you think on the road? I mean,
- 34:10Speaker 1: how did the overall road driving experience go for you?
- 34:14Speaker 2: Super comfortable for such a big vehicle, It was quiet
- 34:17Speaker 2: inside the cabin, I thought.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Yeah, we heard some tire noise, which would be expected
- 34:21Speaker 1: because these are aggressive tires. Yeah, but it's so quiet
- 34:23Speaker 1: otherwise that you actually do notice other noises, like on
- 34:26Speaker 1: the trail. I even noticed like the air conditioned seats,
- 34:30Speaker 1: like you would notice the blower, whereas if you were
- 34:32Speaker 1: driving an internal combustion vehicle, the engine noise would drone
- 34:35Speaker 1: out the blower for the air conditioned seats, but you
- 34:38Speaker 1: actually could hear it.
- 34:39Speaker 3: It was so quiet.
- 34:40Speaker 2: And it's kind of funny they will hype in noise
- 34:42Speaker 2: driving noise. That's kind of it's like manufactured, right. It
- 34:46Speaker 2: is through the speakers, from the speakers, so you have
- 34:49Speaker 2: that sense of the noise of the internal combustion engine
- 34:52Speaker 2: even though it's not there.
- 34:53Speaker 1: So yeah, and in some ways I like that. I
- 34:55Speaker 1: believe that there's a way to turn it down a
- 34:57Speaker 1: little bit. I think you have to have it because,
- 35:00Speaker 1: as we noticed in some obstacles, you get very deep
- 35:03Speaker 1: into the throttle, and I can see why the engineers
- 35:07Speaker 1: would want want to make the driver aware of the
- 35:10Speaker 1: fact that they're getting deeper and deeper and deeper into
- 35:12Speaker 1: the throttle because there's no other indication like the RPMs
- 35:15Speaker 1: aren't going up. You don't see that like you would
- 35:17Speaker 1: in an internal combustion engine. So i'd but it was
- 35:20Speaker 1: a little loud and maybe seem like more than you
- 35:23Speaker 1: needed it to be. And I'd even like to see
- 35:25Speaker 1: it go away completely at lower speeds and lower throttle positions,
- 35:29Speaker 1: a lesser throttle position. So, but it does make sense
- 35:32Speaker 1: once you get into the throttle deeper that it's got
- 35:34Speaker 1: to start telling you that you're like, you're getting close
- 35:36Speaker 1: to that one two hundred foot pounds of torque that
- 35:40Speaker 1: you're asking of this engine, Like is that really what
- 35:42Speaker 1: you want to be doing right now?
- 35:43Speaker 2: Sure, that's a good point. Other kind of driving, you know,
- 35:47Speaker 2: road related things. I really like that that regenerative breaking
- 35:50Speaker 2: paddle on the steering wheel, so it was on the
- 35:53Speaker 2: left hand side kind of up at the ten o'clock
- 35:56Speaker 2: area of the wheel. You could you know, it's a
- 35:59Speaker 2: manual level that you pull towards you and it activates
- 36:03Speaker 2: like above average regenerative braking. So in situations where you
- 36:06Speaker 2: don't need an abrupt stop and you can slow down gradually,
- 36:09Speaker 2: it kind of allows you to gamify this experience of
- 36:13Speaker 2: extending the range to its maximum, so you can you
- 36:15Speaker 2: know you can capture extra energy by braking with that
- 36:19Speaker 2: instead of the brake pedal.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Well, and it was shocking to me how much power
- 36:22Speaker 1: there is in the regenerative process because off road, using
- 36:26Speaker 1: that same paddle, you can basically bring the vehicle to
- 36:28Speaker 1: a stop without using the mechanical brakes. It just provides
- 36:32Speaker 1: that much resistance. So when you're going downhill off road,
- 36:35Speaker 1: I wish that that paddle was kind of like a
- 36:38Speaker 1: real stat where you were feeding in a percentage.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Because it is either it's just on or off.
- 36:43Speaker 3: It felt that way to me.
- 36:44Speaker 1: That may not be the case, and we didn't ask
- 36:47Speaker 1: the engineers that question, but it felt like it was
- 36:49Speaker 1: pretty much an on or off situation. It would be
- 36:52Speaker 1: nice to see it like ramp up and you could
- 36:54Speaker 1: actually use it up just for regenerative only, is what
- 36:58Speaker 1: I want in this situation, so you can add on
- 37:01Speaker 1: to the range.
- 37:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought that was really cool.
- 37:03Speaker 1: What do you think about comfort the overall like interior,
- 37:06Speaker 1: the way the interior look, the technology that the electronics
- 37:10Speaker 1: package on the inside.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think starting with comfort, comfort was
- 37:15Speaker 2: above average. I would say for myself, I really like
- 37:18Speaker 2: the finishes on the inside and kind of just the
- 37:20Speaker 2: visual appeal of it. It feels very at once modern
- 37:24Speaker 2: but also kind of retro a little bit.
- 37:27Speaker 1: It had a mid century modern kind of vibe to it.
- 37:30Speaker 1: That those bronze and.
- 37:31Speaker 2: They're like vents rectangular, kind of big rectangles exactly. Yeah,
- 37:36Speaker 2: the materials choice I thought was very interesting and appealing
- 37:39Speaker 2: to me, which is funny because I chose cloth seats
- 37:42Speaker 2: for our truck. I'm just because they feel simple and
- 37:45Speaker 2: easy to take care of and they're not fancy, and
- 37:47Speaker 2: the hummer's funny. It kind of feels fancy, but it
- 37:50Speaker 2: kind of feels sporty. It's like a lot of different
- 37:53Speaker 2: like synthetic kind of surfaces that are textured and there's
- 37:57Speaker 2: nice contrasts. It's kind of a non absorbed surface everywhere,
- 38:01Speaker 2: which was actually kind of nice. There was one point
- 38:03Speaker 2: I remember when it was it had been dumping rain
- 38:05Speaker 2: and there was a lot of water on the roof
- 38:07Speaker 2: and I opened the window, like a bucket of water
- 38:10Speaker 2: just about came in and it kind of splashed all
- 38:12Speaker 2: over the arm rest and everything, but it kind of
- 38:14Speaker 2: just like made its way down to the floor. It
- 38:16Speaker 2: didn't really absorb in and stay wet all day, and
- 38:20Speaker 2: it was dry pretty quickly.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that was something that I noticed in the rain
- 38:25Speaker 1: is they may need to look at some kind of
- 38:27Speaker 1: of a rain channel or way of moving that water
- 38:30Speaker 1: off of that one corner of the window, because when
- 38:33Speaker 1: it's raining and you roll down the window at all, something,
- 38:37Speaker 1: it's like basically like the bucket mode, you go into
- 38:39Speaker 1: bucket mode because like the water just starts pouring into
- 38:43Speaker 1: the onto the door card.
- 38:45Speaker 2: It happened on both sides, it did, yeah.
- 38:47Speaker 1: On the passenger side and on the driver's side, so
- 38:49Speaker 1: that I thought that was really interesting. There's something about
- 38:52Speaker 1: how those panels are made that it's just channeling one
- 38:55Speaker 1: hundred percent of the rain that's falling on the vehicle
- 38:57Speaker 1: into that one spot. It's it got really wet, like
- 39:00Speaker 1: it really did. I mean, I'm sure that they take
- 39:02Speaker 1: into consideration moisture because it has removable tops and all that, Like,
- 39:06Speaker 1: there's got to be some consideration of it getting wet.
- 39:09Speaker 1: But it seemed a little excessive on the water pouring in.
- 39:12Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean that's kind of comfort. I found
- 39:14Speaker 2: it comfortable, seats adjusted well air conditioned seats, heated seats,
- 39:18Speaker 2: heated steering wheel, yep. I thought kind of The layout
- 39:21Speaker 2: of the cockpit was nice. You get two massive screens.
- 39:24Speaker 2: You've got your screen with all of your driving information
- 39:27Speaker 2: right in front of you, that's digital, and then you
- 39:28Speaker 2: also have the massive infantainment screen which is touchscreen, and
- 39:31Speaker 2: it's also got a couple rows of piano keys below it,
- 39:35Speaker 2: and those are kind of neat. They kind of can
- 39:38Speaker 2: they change based on the particular menu or screen that
- 39:41Speaker 2: you're looking at on the infotainment system, So it's kind
- 39:44Speaker 2: of neat because none of the keys are labeled, but
- 39:46Speaker 2: as you go through the different screens, you can kind
- 39:48Speaker 2: of see what the individual buttons are assigned to.
- 39:52Speaker 1: And I did like that they weren't ashamed to put
- 39:56Speaker 1: the performance attributes of the car very front and center
- 39:59Speaker 1: with those piano key so you know, rear locker front
- 40:02Speaker 1: and rear locker, vehicle stability control OFF, parking guidance off.
- 40:07Speaker 1: They were very prominent, and I like the fact that
- 40:09Speaker 1: there wasn't too many buttons. I think at maybe EVS
- 40:12Speaker 1: there's this desire to make everything super techy where you
- 40:15Speaker 1: can activate anything with a button or some multiple menu pushing.
- 40:19Speaker 1: But it felt like everything that I needed the car
- 40:21Speaker 1: to do was right there at hand.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Which I like, and all the ones you just mentioned,
- 40:25Speaker 2: those ones are static, they don't change with them, RASO
- 40:28Speaker 2: lockers and things like that.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I did notice that, because it's coming to mind right now,
- 40:32Speaker 1: to activate the front locker you have to be in
- 40:35Speaker 1: terrain mode, which I did not care for because the
- 40:38Speaker 1: terrain mode activates the one pedal drive. I would like
- 40:41Speaker 1: to be able to in some other mode or maybe
- 40:44Speaker 1: that maybe it's possible, and I did forget to ask
- 40:47Speaker 1: engineers this, but maybe there's some way to do a
- 40:49Speaker 1: custom menu so that you can be in like a
- 40:52Speaker 1: maximum off road performance mode, not high speed, low speed
- 40:56Speaker 1: technical terrain, and then you can turn the front locker
- 40:59Speaker 1: on and off without having to have the one pedal operation,
- 41:03Speaker 1: which we'll talk about in a few minutes. But the
- 41:05Speaker 1: fact that it has a front locker is a great thing.
- 41:07Speaker 1: But it requires five six second hold to turn the
- 41:10Speaker 1: front locker on, and I think that that's too long.
- 41:13Speaker 1: I think that and there needs to be some maybe
- 41:15Speaker 1: give it a confirmation on the screen, push it, and
- 41:17Speaker 1: then are you sure you want to lock the front
- 41:19Speaker 1: diff and then click yes, because there's no other indication
- 41:22Speaker 1: that you've held it long enough other than that it
- 41:24Speaker 1: turns on. I think that can be improved, probably with
- 41:27Speaker 1: a software update.
- 41:28Speaker 2: That's the nice thing about that. Yeah, that should be
- 41:30Speaker 2: something that could be changed.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you need to be able to toggle
- 41:33Speaker 1: through the front and rear locker without having to hold
- 41:35Speaker 1: it for it was six seconds every time. Yep, there's
- 41:38Speaker 1: on a technical trail. You can be turning the front
- 41:40Speaker 1: locker on and off regularly and you got to come
- 41:43Speaker 1: to a complete stop, do the whole thing.
- 41:45Speaker 3: You know it.
- 41:45Speaker 1: It'd be nice to see it be a little more reactive. Yeah,
- 41:48Speaker 1: I agree, or maybe you just agree to it the
- 41:50Speaker 1: first time you do it, and then it lets it
- 41:52Speaker 1: turn on and off actively until the next time you
- 41:55Speaker 1: key cycle the car. How did the high speed stability
- 41:58Speaker 1: feel on the road, Like, did it feel confidence inspiring
- 42:01Speaker 1: to you at driving at speed?
- 42:03Speaker 2: It did, yeah, I thought so. You know, we had
- 42:05Speaker 2: a couple of times where it did bury the accelerator
- 42:08Speaker 2: and just kind of on ramps. Yeah, on ramps, right,
- 42:10Speaker 2: as long as you're you know, there's no rule about
- 42:13Speaker 2: how fast you can come up to speed speed exceed
- 42:17Speaker 2: the speed limit. Yeah, yeah, I remember one in particular
- 42:20Speaker 2: that was it. You know, it was a curving on
- 42:21Speaker 2: ramp and I kind of went for it, and you
- 42:23Speaker 2: said trust it, trust it, and I did, and it
- 42:27Speaker 2: held the line that I picked pretty well.
- 42:29Speaker 3: I thought.
- 42:30Speaker 1: I noticed that as well. One of the things that
- 42:32Speaker 1: we look for we call it traceability. But when you're
- 42:35Speaker 1: in a steady state IRV, like on that on ramp,
- 42:38Speaker 1: or in a large sweeper or any turning event, when
- 42:41Speaker 1: you hold the line, does the vehicle start to understeer
- 42:45Speaker 1: off of that line? Does it require a lot of
- 42:47Speaker 1: correction from the driver? Is it very traceable? Does it
- 42:50Speaker 1: continue to maintain that arc without a lot of other
- 42:53Speaker 1: inputs if external factors haven't changed. So the vehicle is
- 42:57Speaker 1: very traceable, It has a lot of It has low
- 43:00Speaker 1: driver effort. It actually increases the steering the feel of
- 43:04Speaker 1: the steering weighting because it is an electronic steering system,
- 43:07Speaker 1: but it makes it feel firmer at road speeds, which
- 43:10Speaker 1: I also like because it is a big truck and
- 43:12Speaker 1: you should feel like a big truck. But then when
- 43:14Speaker 1: you get off road, they lighten that up and then
- 43:16Speaker 1: the steering effort goes very very low, which I think
- 43:19Speaker 1: is also really nice. It reduces fatigue while you're moving
- 43:22Speaker 1: through the rocks and everything.
- 43:23Speaker 2: That's a good point, and I do distinctly remember those
- 43:26Speaker 2: two qualities of like the almost effortlessly turning the wheel
- 43:29Speaker 2: in the off road scenarios and versus more feedback, more
- 43:34Speaker 2: tactile feel to the wheel.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought the on road presence was great, and
- 43:38Speaker 1: like if you go from let's call it forty to
- 43:41Speaker 1: seventy five, it happens so quickly that the speedometer can't
- 43:45Speaker 1: actually keep up with the speed increasing, Like it was
- 43:49Speaker 1: like skipping like five six.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Numbers at a time. Yeah, just jumping. Unbelievable how fast
- 43:55Speaker 3: it was.
- 43:55Speaker 1: As you can tell in the audio, like we had
- 43:57Speaker 1: a good time with the speed of this thing.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Let's get into the off road a little bit. Yeah,
- 44:02Speaker 3: we think.
- 44:02Speaker 2: I mean, it was such a pleasure, Like I kind
- 44:04Speaker 2: of mentioned it before, but it almost felt like the
- 44:07Speaker 2: course was like a dance. And despite the fact that
- 44:11Speaker 2: you're in this very large vehicle, it's kind of pivoting
- 44:14Speaker 2: and just just kind of gliding between these features. I mean,
- 44:18Speaker 2: the suspension was very settled. There is a sway bar
- 44:22Speaker 2: in the front, correct, but not in the rear, so
- 44:24Speaker 2: sometimes there was a little bit more abrupt motion when
- 44:29Speaker 2: you approached an obstacle. But usually the rear end of
- 44:31Speaker 2: the vehicle felt a little bit more settled through some
- 44:33Speaker 2: of those things. One of the things that really blew
- 44:36Speaker 2: me away was I would attribute it to the traction control,
- 44:39Speaker 2: but its ability to still accelerate very fast on loose surfaces. Sure,
- 44:44Speaker 2: And you really kind of demonstrated that to me through
- 44:46Speaker 2: some of those washes that the course followed.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you'd be able well, you'd be able to.
- 44:52Speaker 1: We were down in a gravel wash and you'd come
- 44:55Speaker 1: out of a corner and we were just kind of
- 44:57Speaker 1: cruising through one corner and then there's this straight away
- 45:00Speaker 1: way ahead of us, and you know, heavily corrugated in
- 45:03Speaker 1: the beginning because there's lots of wheel hop and even
- 45:06Speaker 1: axle wrap from other vehicles, not you don't really get
- 45:08Speaker 1: much axle wrap from the hummer, nothing perceptible, but you
- 45:11Speaker 1: do get wheel hop. And so there's these deep corrugations
- 45:15Speaker 1: in the start of the straightaway and the fact that
- 45:18Speaker 1: it could hook up as well as it as it did,
- 45:20Speaker 1: I mean, it would just launch down that wash. It
- 45:23Speaker 1: was pretty amazing. And then we did some panic stop
- 45:27Speaker 1: testing as well, or threat extreme threshold breaking maneuvers as well,
- 45:32Speaker 1: and in those deep corrugations, like it maintained a lot
- 45:35Speaker 1: of traction, but you could tell that there was a
- 45:37Speaker 1: lot of wheel movement and we were banging off of
- 45:40Speaker 1: the stops as well. Like you can actually hear a
- 45:42Speaker 1: couple of these hard kind of hits going through these corrugations,
- 45:45Speaker 1: because again the front end is dived down, so you
- 45:48Speaker 1: have very little up travel because you're under all this
- 45:50Speaker 1: breaking pressure and now you've got these big holes from
- 45:53Speaker 1: the corrugation. So you could really feel the suspension banging
- 45:56Speaker 1: up against the bump stops, which was pretty interesting, but
- 45:59Speaker 1: very very neutral at speed off road, which is what
- 46:03Speaker 1: we typically want. A lot of manufacturers bake in a
- 46:06Speaker 1: ton of understeer for safety. It'd rather you end up
- 46:09Speaker 1: in the ditch as opposed to oversteering and then rolling,
- 46:12Speaker 1: so they bake in a bunch of understeer. But that
- 46:15Speaker 1: is not the case at all with the Hummer. And
- 46:18Speaker 1: you can turn off vehicle stability control for the most part.
- 46:22Speaker 1: There's ways to even disable it more, which I don't
- 46:24Speaker 1: know is a good idea to share share to the masses,
- 46:27Speaker 1: but I'm sure it'll come out on the internet at
- 46:29Speaker 1: some point in time. But you can really let the
- 46:31Speaker 1: vehicle operate very analog, and the way that they've got
- 46:35Speaker 1: this battery pack so low and so centered on the vehicle,
- 46:39Speaker 1: it is actually quite quick to respond to steering input,
- 46:42Speaker 1: and even more so to steering under heavy braking input.
- 46:45Speaker 1: So that's what I'm looking for. Is this vehicle understeering
- 46:49Speaker 1: on me, it's taking me offline? Or is it am
- 46:52Speaker 1: I getting a lot of breaking effectiveness? And then is
- 46:55Speaker 1: it turning in at a high rate? Is it turning
- 46:57Speaker 1: in appropriately based upon the steering input, And it would
- 47:00Speaker 1: turn in really nicely. And they also don't They don't
- 47:03Speaker 1: cut the throttle either, so I could be heavy left
- 47:05Speaker 1: foot breaking in a corner. The front end dives down,
- 47:08Speaker 1: the front end hooks up, it turns in, and I
- 47:10Speaker 1: can actually start eating throttle, which starts to rotate the
- 47:13Speaker 1: rear end out, and it's just super fun. So it
- 47:16Speaker 1: is truly a SuperTruck off road. It has thirteen inches
- 47:19Speaker 1: of wheel travel front and rear, so that's long travel,
- 47:23Speaker 1: which does a great job of absorbing impacts and wallows
- 47:28Speaker 1: and other irregularities in the surface.
- 47:30Speaker 3: But it's also a heavy vehicle too.
- 47:32Speaker 1: So it's important off road to know that you don't
- 47:35Speaker 1: have anywhere near the grip that you do on asphalt.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Breaking distances are going to be longer than you may expect.
- 47:41Speaker 1: It's ten thousand pounds mass in motion, you know, there's
- 47:45Speaker 1: only so much traction available to those tires to slow
- 47:49Speaker 1: the vehicle down. So making sure that you pay a
- 47:51Speaker 1: little bit of attention to the fact that you got
- 47:53Speaker 1: a freight train in motion. So high speed off road,
- 47:57Speaker 1: it's kind of what you would expect it to be.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Super truck territory, very fast, very confidence inspired, inspiring, stable safe.
- 48:04Speaker 1: You can go into a couple different modes that even
- 48:06Speaker 1: make it a little safer as well. But then we
- 48:08Speaker 1: got into some slow speed technical stuff too.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Yeah, there was some kind of steepick up off camber,
- 48:14Speaker 2: things with like large rocks, some some ledges and things
- 48:17Speaker 2: like that, rost axle holes. Traction was great through those areas.
- 48:22Speaker 2: I don't think we made it through all of the
- 48:24Speaker 2: obstacles on the first round through when I was driving
- 48:27Speaker 2: without engaging the lockers, that's right. And it was raining,
- 48:30Speaker 2: and it was raining, and and that's and that's not
- 48:33Speaker 2: to say that the team didn't select a course that
- 48:37Speaker 2: that was truly challenging. I mean, this was made to
- 48:40Speaker 2: appeal to maybe a broader range of drivers and some
- 48:43Speaker 2: folks with a little bit less off off highway driving experience,
- 48:47Speaker 2: which is fine and reasonable, but these were not gimmes either.
- 48:50Speaker 2: You kind of had to pick a line you did,
- 48:51Speaker 2: and yeah, it was really it was really fantastic how
- 48:55Speaker 2: well it did without even needing those lockers. But then
- 48:57Speaker 2: we did test the lockers obviously too, because there were
- 49:00Speaker 2: I mean, I say we didn't need them. I saw
- 49:02Speaker 2: some of the other trucks get some wheel spin and
- 49:04Speaker 2: you know, have some challenges, and I like to think
- 49:06Speaker 2: that maybe we didn't experience that because of some of
- 49:09Speaker 2: our trainings that we've done and maybe helped us.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we did a good job of maintaining
- 49:14Speaker 1: the right momentum through there. One of the main reasons
- 49:17Speaker 1: that I choose to select at least a rear locker
- 49:20Speaker 1: in most cases is I don't want to damage the trail.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Like it's like, we need to be good stewards of
- 49:26Speaker 1: these places. And this was a beautiful trail. It had
- 49:28Speaker 1: no trash that I could see.
- 49:30Speaker 2: I saw one balloon got it, but that's not from
- 49:33Speaker 2: the people driving the typical Arizona.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you'll see, Yeah, mile our balloons everywhere, but it
- 49:38Speaker 1: was a beautiful trail. It was fairly remote, just rich
- 49:42Speaker 1: density of sooro and acatillo, and like, you don't want
- 49:45Speaker 1: to tear the trail up because that's when they close them.
- 49:48Speaker 1: So for me, I didn't want to have wheelspin, so
- 49:51Speaker 1: I engaged that virtual rear locker in almost every climbing
- 49:55Speaker 1: scenario and it just completely exceeded my expectations. I think
- 49:59Speaker 1: it also helps the vehicle a little bit, because one
- 50:01Speaker 1: of the places that an electric vehicle struggles the most
- 50:05Speaker 1: is just right off that zero rpm. So a good
- 50:08Speaker 1: example of that would be like in Moab, you do
- 50:11Speaker 1: the Moab bump over a ledge, and you'll push the
- 50:14Speaker 1: vehicle up against the ledge and you'll try to press
- 50:17Speaker 1: the front tires into the surface so that they get
- 50:19Speaker 1: a lot of grip and they can climb up and over.
- 50:21Speaker 1: And then there's another maneuver that you do with a
- 50:23Speaker 1: rear axle where you kind of bounce the chassis up
- 50:26Speaker 1: and then you feed some throttle so the front end
- 50:28Speaker 1: pulls the rear up against the shelf and then you
- 50:31Speaker 1: can climb up and over it. These electric motors don't
- 50:33Speaker 1: do well at that zero ish rpm range like that
- 50:36Speaker 1: very low rpm, they can't start to develop all that torque.
- 50:39Speaker 1: So I noticed that by kind of keeping it moving
- 50:42Speaker 1: very slowly, you didn't get in as much trouble. Anytime
- 50:45Speaker 1: we saw another driver's struggle, it's because they got onto
- 50:48Speaker 1: the throttle, it spun, They got freaked out, and then
- 50:51Speaker 1: they stopped completely and they're on a steep climb and
- 50:54Speaker 1: they're trying to get going again. So you can see
- 50:56Speaker 1: the truck is struggling to get going and spinning a
- 50:59Speaker 1: little bit, and the breake tracks controls trying to arrest it.
- 51:02Speaker 1: I think that's a very difficult problem for electric vehicles
- 51:05Speaker 1: to solve.
- 51:05Speaker 3: As drivers, we have to learn to adjust.
- 51:07Speaker 1: A little bit for these electric vehicles and very slowly,
- 51:11Speaker 1: again like low rpm, continue with a little bit of
- 51:14Speaker 1: movement through these obstacles so that it doesn't have to
- 51:16Speaker 1: restart from zero again.
- 51:17Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, but I mean overall slow speed off road
- 51:20Speaker 2: technical scenarios.
- 51:22Speaker 3: It just was great.
- 51:24Speaker 1: It was really impressive, minimal head toss, so it was
- 51:26Speaker 1: really comfortable for the driver and the passengers.
- 51:29Speaker 3: The camera views took.
- 51:30Speaker 1: Care of any of the visibility problems that you just
- 51:33Speaker 1: get from the way that it's designed and the size
- 51:35Speaker 1: of it. I thought that was really impressive. The tires
- 51:38Speaker 1: were great. They were designed specifically for this vehicle to
- 51:41Speaker 1: be a combination of off road performance and on road range,
- 51:44Speaker 1: maintaining as much range as possible, So that was impressive.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Eighteen inch wheel which I mean, these are they're really
- 51:50Speaker 1: big tires on there.
- 51:51Speaker 3: You can see how big they are.
- 51:52Speaker 1: And then all of the electronic packages worked great. The
- 51:56Speaker 1: one pedal drive is really interesting. It's kind of like
- 51:59Speaker 1: left foot break but with just one foot. So you
- 52:02Speaker 1: start to accelerate and the vehicle moves forward, you start
- 52:05Speaker 1: to let off the accelerator, it actually starts to slow down,
- 52:08Speaker 1: and not just because of what we had experienced with
- 52:11Speaker 1: an engine where it's compression braking. It's actually starting to
- 52:13Speaker 1: apply the brakes without you touching the brake pedal, so
- 52:16Speaker 1: it'll actually if you lift off quickly, it kind of
- 52:19Speaker 1: parks you like it jerks you to a stop.
- 52:22Speaker 3: It does.
- 52:22Speaker 2: And that was that was in the low range correct
- 52:25Speaker 2: in the l ration, and I remember one of the
- 52:27Speaker 2: other drivers mentioned that they got on the radio and
- 52:30Speaker 2: kind of asked because they noticed when we were driving
- 52:32Speaker 2: in terrain mode in low the brake lights were on
- 52:36Speaker 2: all vehicles consistently, and they said, what does that mean?
- 52:39Speaker 2: Do those ever go off? And the engineers kind of
- 52:42Speaker 2: got back to us and said, it's because there is
- 52:44Speaker 2: a little bit of brake being applied the entire time.
- 52:47Speaker 1: And we did smell a little bit of breake smell
- 52:50Speaker 1: at one point from one of the vehicles in front
- 52:52Speaker 1: of us. In fact, the driver got up and did
- 52:54Speaker 1: a walk around because you know, he had been in
- 52:56Speaker 1: terrain mode for clearly a very very long time. So
- 52:59Speaker 1: I think you want to move in and out of it.
- 53:00Speaker 1: You want to be in terrain mode and really technical obstacles.
- 53:03Speaker 1: That's where I would like to see the front locker
- 53:05Speaker 1: being available without one pedal drive. So if you're doing
- 53:08Speaker 1: a long trail, the brakes are going to get hot,
- 53:11Speaker 1: You're using more energy from the battery than you need
- 53:13Speaker 1: to because you're having to overcome the braking.
- 53:16Speaker 3: I would like to see the ability to engage the.
- 53:18Speaker 1: Front locker without one pedal drive and without the vehicle
- 53:21Speaker 1: breaks being applied. Sure, I think that would be an advantage.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Front rear departure angles front approach and rear departure angles
- 53:28Speaker 1: are great. You can improve the breakover angle. With an
- 53:30Speaker 1: air suspension, you can go into a high mode. There's
- 53:34Speaker 1: rock sliders that come on this edition of the vehicle
- 53:36Speaker 1: that really protect it. And then of course that full
- 53:38Speaker 1: length boron skid plating underneath, so quite the beast on
- 53:41Speaker 1: the trail. And because of that four wheel steering, it's
- 53:44Speaker 1: way more nimble than you'd think.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it was incredible again just I mean kind of
- 53:49Speaker 2: dancing through these narrow sections of trail like it drove
- 53:52Speaker 2: like a much smaller vehicle than it is.
- 53:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it was I think overall impressive off road.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I totally agree.
- 53:58Speaker 1: What was your kind of thought surround overlanding one of
- 54:01Speaker 1: these things, Let's just quickly redefine overlanding.
- 54:04Speaker 2: It's vehicle based travel, so it's actually a pretty broad
- 54:07Speaker 2: thing that we're defining with this one term. So I think, yes,
- 54:11Speaker 2: absolutely it could. You know, charging infrastructure is going to
- 54:14Speaker 2: be one of the major considerations. But as we found out,
- 54:17Speaker 2: we got a whole day of driving with hours of
- 54:19Speaker 2: off road off highway driving yep, and we still had
- 54:22Speaker 2: plenty of battery life left to get back to where
- 54:24Speaker 2: we started.
- 54:25Speaker 1: So and most trails are fairly short. I think you
- 54:27Speaker 1: could easily do the Alpine loop. I mean, where I
- 54:30Speaker 1: think you run into trouble is like you want to
- 54:32Speaker 1: go camping for quite some time, and you've got fridges
- 54:35Speaker 1: running and all kinds of other accessories that are drawing
- 54:38Speaker 1: on that battery pack. I think that starts to be
- 54:39Speaker 1: more of a consideration. But at least in the forty
- 54:42Speaker 1: eight States, there's just not many scenarios where you're going
- 54:45Speaker 1: to run out of range.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think you know, a lot of times
- 54:48Speaker 2: when we use the term overlander, people tend to think
- 54:51Speaker 2: of full timers, you know, people who are traveling for
- 54:54Speaker 2: months at a time. So maybe kind of what you
- 54:56Speaker 2: just alluded to with, you know, needing a bunch of
- 54:58Speaker 2: accessories or auxiliary things like those could draw some or
- 55:01Speaker 2: those could bring up some challenges for this particular platform.
- 55:05Speaker 2: Maybe not ideal, but also realistically based on the price,
- 55:08Speaker 2: probably not a vehicle everyone's going to choose for it,
- 55:11Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean it couldn't do it. You talked
- 55:13Speaker 2: about it has thirteen hundred pound payloads, so maybe for
- 55:16Speaker 2: a couple less camping gear, you know, that's no problem
- 55:19Speaker 2: totally sufficient. It has enough of a bed that maybe
- 55:21Speaker 2: we'll see some cool innovative company come up with a
- 55:24Speaker 2: lightweight camper.
- 55:25Speaker 1: I'd love to see like fast style, Yeah exactly. I
- 55:29Speaker 1: think that would be I mean it is a go
- 55:31Speaker 1: fast camper, this is a go fast truck. Yeah, it
- 55:34Speaker 1: kind of needs one on the on the back. I
- 55:35Speaker 1: think that would be really clever.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Might be the perfect test of the huck ability of
- 55:39Speaker 2: that emper, Yeah, no doubt.
- 55:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:41Speaker 2: So you've got that bed, You've got the utility of
- 55:43Speaker 2: the bed, you know, and and also there are some
- 55:46Speaker 2: accessories that will be available right away that would be useful.
- 55:49Speaker 2: So we saw one of the vehicles at the initial facility.
- 55:53Speaker 2: It had crossbars and it also had some tower was
- 55:57Speaker 2: it like towers? It was bed on the sides of
- 55:59Speaker 2: the bed, and there was a rooftop tent.
- 56:01Speaker 1: I was Free Spirit recreation rooftop tent up top. You
- 56:04Speaker 1: can get two spare tires in the bed, a bunch
- 56:07Speaker 1: of light packages, of course, but it would be very.
- 56:10Speaker 3: Easy to camp out of that thing.
- 56:12Speaker 1: And I think it's much more of a North American
- 56:15Speaker 1: Overlander than we would think, and that's because it has
- 56:18Speaker 1: a three hundred and fifty mile range. We were able
- 56:20Speaker 1: to experience an entire day of driving on road and
- 56:24Speaker 1: off and we came back with a half full battery.
- 56:26Speaker 1: So I suspect it will solve most of the problems
- 56:29Speaker 1: that a North American overlander would have, and I think
- 56:32Speaker 1: even in the back country. Yeah, even for longer pavement
- 56:36Speaker 1: bound road trips. I really think it'll do just fine here.
- 56:39Speaker 1: When you consider the fact that it can go from
- 56:41Speaker 1: twenty percent charge to eighty percent charge in forty minutes.
- 56:44Speaker 1: You're driving intoterial combustion vehicle. You're going to have to
- 56:47Speaker 1: stop to use the restroom, You're going to have to
- 56:49Speaker 1: stop to refuel, maybe pick up a meal. It's like,
- 56:52Speaker 1: it's not going to be that different in this vehicle. Yeah,
- 56:55Speaker 1: that's very true. I think there'll be a bunch of
- 56:56Speaker 1: accessories that'll come out. I think integrating a winch with
- 56:59Speaker 1: this will be really interesting. It'll be fun to see
- 57:02Speaker 1: how people start to solve problems. Because it is ten
- 57:04Speaker 1: thousand pounds, so it's going to be it's not going
- 57:06Speaker 1: to do great in snow or sand or mud because
- 57:09Speaker 1: it's not the hummer's fault. It weighs ten thousand pounds,
- 57:12Speaker 1: so you can only have so much flotation even out
- 57:14Speaker 1: of a thirty five inch tall tire, So I think
- 57:16Speaker 1: having a winch would.
- 57:17Speaker 3: Probably be a good idea.
- 57:18Speaker 1: So yeah, well, any final thoughts on the on the
- 57:21Speaker 1: Hummer super truck?
- 57:22Speaker 3: Can I have one?
- 57:25Speaker 1: We just need one at the office for Yes, I'm
- 57:27Speaker 1: feeling a little stressed. Yeah, it go zero to not
- 57:30Speaker 1: stressed in three seconds.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Nothing else comes to mind. Man, we've covered quite a
- 57:35Speaker 2: lot to do. Yeah, it's cool. It's just so cool
- 57:38Speaker 2: to see these these vehicles coming about with so much
- 57:41Speaker 2: innovation put into them. You know, I really Now I
- 57:44Speaker 2: want to go and watch the A and E documentary
- 57:46Speaker 2: that was produced on this even more for a couple
- 57:49Speaker 2: of reasons. One, we met a bunch of the people
- 57:51Speaker 2: who are in the documentary featured prominently, and I would
- 57:53Speaker 2: love to see what the behind the scenes was like.
- 57:56Speaker 2: And you know, for those people that are unfamiliar, the
- 57:59Speaker 2: timeline for production of this is like ridiculous two years, right,
- 58:02Speaker 2: which is what like half of what a normal vehicle. Yes,
- 58:05Speaker 2: and they were designing it from the ground up. It's
- 58:07Speaker 2: not land during the pandemic. Yeah, I mean, so really
- 58:10Speaker 2: interesting how they accomplish that. Yeah, so I think there's
- 58:13Speaker 2: probably a really interesting story there, And so yeah, I
- 58:16Speaker 2: would love to go and watch that and just kind
- 58:17Speaker 2: of soak more in about this.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and we're seeing a vehicle like this from a
- 58:21Speaker 1: major OEM. You know, we're not just seeing it from
- 58:23Speaker 1: some disruptor tech startup. We're seeing an OEM deliver an
- 58:28Speaker 1: electric super truck in two years with an enormous amount
- 58:32Speaker 1: of capability and the manufacturing capability to actually deliver units.
- 58:36Speaker 1: And they're already delivering hummers today. So now they are
- 58:40Speaker 1: booked out, I think would they say till twenty twenty
- 58:42Speaker 1: four or something like that, you can't even get one,
- 58:44Speaker 1: get on the list or something like that. So it's
- 58:46Speaker 1: impressive how many they've already sold. But it's going to
- 58:48Speaker 1: be very exciting to see the big OEMs addressing evs
- 58:52Speaker 1: and making more and more interesting vehicles.
- 58:55Speaker 2: I was going to say, I think, you know, my
- 58:57Speaker 2: takeaway is like, while this is a vehicle I personally
- 59:00Speaker 2: I probably wouldn't own for a variety of reasons, not
- 59:02Speaker 2: because it's not fun, yeah, things like that, But you know,
- 59:06Speaker 2: the development of vehicles like this, there's a lot that
- 59:09Speaker 2: comes out of this that will trickle down into things
- 59:11Speaker 2: that are maybe more accessible to a wider variety of people.
- 59:14Speaker 2: And that's really exciting.
- 59:15Speaker 1: I mean that's they've announced an electric Sierra, so we're
- 59:18Speaker 1: going to see a you know, a half ton standard
