- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:13In our current series, Fruitful Work, we're asking
- 0:15the question, what kind of fruit am I
- 0:17bearing at work?
- 0:19Because if we're honest, we don't always bear
- 0:20the kind of fruit we wish we would.
- 0:22But by God's grace, by the power of
- 0:24the Holy Spirit, we can learn to bear
- 0:26fruit that is good.
- 0:28We've been working backwards through the list of
- 0:29the parts of the fruit of the Spirit
- 0:31in Galatians chapter 5 that the Apostle Paul
- 0:33gives us, and today we get to goodness.
- 0:41So I want to talk about this idea
- 0:43of calling someone good.
- 0:45I love it when somebody describes someone by
- 0:47saying, oh, he's good people, or she's good
- 0:49people.
- 0:49Sometimes even on social media, someone will put
- 0:51a, you know, a video of their dog
- 0:53and someone will be like, that dog is
- 0:54good people.
- 0:55And I always liked that one because like
- 0:56the dog isn't a person, it's a dog,
- 0:58but the dog is good people.
- 0:59And sometimes, you know, it sure seems like
- 1:02certain dogs are better people than certain people.
- 1:05So, you know, we're not going to get
- 1:06into exactly how we understand the moral character
- 1:09of animals, although that would be a fun
- 1:10episode sometime, maybe.
- 1:12Not sure how it would relate to the
- 1:13workplace.
- 1:14Maybe if you have a bring your dog
- 1:15to work, work environment, it could be.
- 1:18But all of us have this ability to
- 1:19assess, like, in some way, whatever, I have
- 1:23a sense of in terms of good and
- 1:25bad and what it means to be a
- 1:27good person, I can see something about someone
- 1:29else and be like, yeah, he's good people.
- 1:31She's good people.
- 1:32I want to be the kind of person
- 1:34that that person is being right now.
- 1:36I want to be good in that way.
- 1:39And we've been kind of playing on this
- 1:40idea of our innate moral sensibility during this
- 1:43whole series.
- 1:43I started by talking about where do we
- 1:45get deep inner goodness?
- 1:47And so goodness is one of those kind
- 1:49of catch all terms.
- 1:50It kind of includes the other virtues, the
- 1:52other aspects of moral character inside of it.
- 1:55It's the basic question.
- 1:56What does it mean to be a good
- 1:58person?
- 2:00And this is a question that different philosophers,
- 2:03different thinkers, different artists have looked at in
- 2:06every human culture over time.
- 2:08It's something that's critical to human life.
- 2:10If we don't have a sense of what
- 2:11it means to be a good person, we
- 2:13don't know how to live.
- 2:15And the Bible's answer to this question.
- 2:17What does it mean to be a good
- 2:18person is really clear.
- 2:20It's it's being a person of love, joy,
- 2:25peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control.
- 2:32But then the question is, OK, so how
- 2:33do we get good people?
- 2:34And again, the Bible's answer on this is
- 2:36really clear.
- 2:37As Paul says, those who belong to Christ
- 2:40have crucified the flesh with its passions and
- 2:43desires.
- 2:44The way we overcome human badness is by
- 2:47belonging to Jesus.
- 2:49And this means that it's outside help.
- 2:52God sends Jesus and through the power of
- 2:54Jesus, death and resurrection provides a pathway for
- 2:57us to grow in goodness.
- 3:00And of course, this involves the Holy Spirit,
- 3:02the gift of the Holy Spirit working in
- 3:03us from the inside out.
- 3:05That's the Bible's answer to the question, how
- 3:07do we get good people?
- 3:09But there is a danger here.
- 3:11This is a danger we're familiar with.
- 3:13And that is the danger of not being
- 3:15good, but being a goody two shoes, feeling
- 3:17superior to other people, feeling self-righteous.
- 3:19And Christians often have a reputation for this.
- 3:22And Christians have often earned their reputation for
- 3:24this.
- 3:25We can kind of be like, oh, yeah,
- 3:26well, the Bible says that the way to
- 3:28be a good person is to belong to
- 3:30Jesus.
- 3:30And I belong to Jesus and other people
- 3:32don't.
- 3:32So I'm better than other people.
- 3:34Right.
- 3:35And this moral superiority develops.
- 3:38Ironically, that kind of moral superiority is exactly
- 3:40the opposite of the character of Christ.
- 3:43We talked about how Jesus described his own
- 3:45heart as gentle and lowly.
- 3:48Jesus was the most humble person who ever
- 3:50lived.
- 3:51And yet many people who think of themselves
- 3:53as his followers instead fall into a kind
- 3:55of self-righteous pride and an in-group,
- 3:58out-group tribalism where we think, oh, because
- 4:00we belong to Jesus, we are better and
- 4:03others are worse, which is an inversion.
- 4:05It's actually the opposite of the lesson we
- 4:07should be learning from Jesus, which is the
- 4:09lesson of humility.
- 4:11So we can ask the question, how do
- 4:13you get good people?
- 4:14But we could nuance it and say, how
- 4:16do you get good people who don't think
- 4:18that they're better than everyone else?
- 4:20Because that's what we really want.
- 4:21We really want good people who aren't full
- 4:22of themselves.
- 4:23We really want people who sometimes are being
- 4:26changed from the inside out into more courageous
- 4:29people, more loving people, more generous people, but
- 4:32who aren't getting stuck up about it.
- 4:33This is really tricky.
- 4:34How do you get that?
- 4:36Well, what would be really handy?
- 4:39And this might be a funny way of
- 4:40saying it, but what would be handy if
- 4:42you were kind of designing the world and
- 4:44thinking about how do we how do we
- 4:45get ourselves some good people?
- 4:47But without them getting stuck up, how could
- 4:49we do that?
- 4:50All right.
- 4:51It would be handy to have some sort
- 4:53of process that would create deep change in
- 4:57people's souls while at the same time leaving
- 5:00them with a genuine conviction that they can't
- 5:02take the credit for that change.
- 5:05In other words, you would need a theology
- 5:07of grace and the spirit.
- 5:10This is the teaching that we've been looking
- 5:11at this whole time that we're saved by
- 5:13grace through faith.
- 5:14In some of the first verses of Galatians,
- 5:16Paul uses shorthand and just calls it the
- 5:18grace of Christ.
- 5:19Again, this gift of Jesus' death and resurrection
- 5:22is something that we can't earn, that God
- 5:24initiated, that God responded to our weakness by
- 5:27giving us in freedom.
- 5:29And without that gift of Jesus' death and
- 5:31resurrection, we would be sunk.
- 5:33We would have no opportunity to experience true
- 5:35goodness and our character.
- 5:38And this also is the work of the
- 5:40Holy Spirit.
- 5:40The Holy Spirit applies the power of Jesus'
- 5:42death and resurrection to our hearts, pouring God's
- 5:45love into our hearts so that we can
- 5:48grow up in that grace, in that gift
- 5:50that God has given us.
- 5:53And so that leaves us with a genuine
- 5:56internal process that can change us, a deep
- 5:59process of true change in our souls.
- 6:01But also leaving us, hopefully, with the genuine
- 6:05conviction that we can't take credit for that
- 6:07change.
- 6:07So there's no room for feeling superior to
- 6:09other people.
- 6:10There's no room for pride because we just
- 6:12look at what Jesus has done, and that's
- 6:14the headline.
- 6:15The headline is not like, oh, look at
- 6:17me, I'm growing in grace.
- 6:18The headline is, Jesus died and rose again
- 6:21for me.
- 6:22The headline is, the Holy Spirit has been
- 6:24given to me.
- 6:25That's why I have this opportunity to grow
- 6:27in grace.
- 6:27The idea that your conclusion from that would
- 6:29be feeling superior to some other human being,
- 6:32it's just totally out of perspective.
- 6:34It's laughable.
- 6:36But there is something here that sometimes can
- 6:39cause a question.
- 6:40And that's like, well, but we do do
- 6:43something, right?
- 6:44Like we are involved in this process, and
- 6:46we've been talking about that.
- 6:46Like we have to be active, we have
- 6:47to be interactive with the Holy Spirit.
- 6:49And that's where Christian practices and spiritual disciplines
- 6:51and things along those lines come in.
- 6:53God isn't just going to zap us and
- 6:55give us the fruit of the Spirit without
- 6:56us taking action, taking responsibility, engaging our will.
- 7:01And so sometimes you can get this question
- 7:03of like, well, don't I don't I get
- 7:04some credit for what I do?
- 7:06I was having this conversation with a Christian
- 7:08friend and she was like, I have been
- 7:09through so much life change in the past
- 7:12few years in terms of managing my own
- 7:13mental health and processing family trauma.
- 7:16Been to counseling.
- 7:17I've gotten my medication.
- 7:18I've had to form new habits.
- 7:19I've had to do so much work.
- 7:21And now you're telling me that it's just
- 7:23God doing all that work that like I
- 7:25don't get to take credit for any of
- 7:26the hard work that I did over the
- 7:27past decade.
- 7:29And I get where that question is coming
- 7:30from.
- 7:31And I think what's behind that question is
- 7:33this longing for our effort to be recognized.
- 7:36And that's a that's a good longing at
- 7:40the same time.
- 7:41What we have to understand is our effort
- 7:44is always assisted by God.
- 7:47And C.S. Lewis, as usual, has some
- 7:48great insights about this.
- 7:50So in his book, Mere Christianity, he has
- 7:52this passage where he's talking about God working
- 7:55in us.
- 7:56And he says he's quoting a passage where
- 7:59it says, for it is God who works
- 8:00in you.
- 8:01And he says, this looks as if God
- 8:04did everything and we nothing.
- 8:06I'm afraid this is the sort of thing
- 8:07we come up against in Christianity.
- 8:09I am puzzled, but I am not surprised.
- 8:11You see, we are now trying to understand
- 8:13and to separate into watertight compartments what exactly
- 8:16God does and what man does when God
- 8:18and man are working together.
- 8:20And of course, we begin by thinking it
- 8:22is like two men working together so that
- 8:23you could say he did this bit and
- 8:25I did that.
- 8:26But this way of thinking breaks down.
- 8:27God is not like that.
- 8:28He is inside you as well as outside.
- 8:31Even if we could understand who did what,
- 8:33I do not think human language could properly
- 8:34express it.
- 8:35And the attempt to express it, different churches
- 8:37say different things.
- 8:39But you will find that even in those
- 8:40who insist most strongly on the importance of
- 8:42good actions, they will tell you that you
- 8:45need faith.
- 8:46And even those who insist most strongly on
- 8:49faith tell you to do good actions.
- 8:51At any rate, that is as far as
- 8:52I can go.
- 8:54I love Lewis's own humility to kind of
- 8:56throw his hands up in the air there
- 8:57and be like, I'm not going to give
- 8:58you a technical theology of exactly how faith
- 9:01and works work together, but we need both.
- 9:03And if you are a technical theology person,
- 9:05that conversation is worth having.
- 9:07But there's also a humility there that's right,
- 9:09where it's like, as one pastor says it,
- 9:11God does everything and we do something.
- 9:13And there's a mystery there of how it
- 9:15all works out.
- 9:16But even the things where we do have
- 9:17to engage our will and engage our effort,
- 9:19even those things are empowered by God's grace.
- 9:22And so ultimately, there's just no room for
- 9:24pride or superiority.
- 9:26There's room for a longing for affirmation of
- 9:28our effort.
- 9:29And Jesus, in his parables, he says, we
- 9:32will hear that word of affirmation.
- 9:34We will hear those words, well done, good
- 9:37and faithful servant.
- 9:38God does look upon our efforts with delight
- 9:41and with joy and wants to affirm that.
- 9:45But it's not the kind of thing that
- 9:46leaves us with room to be snooty towards
- 9:48anyone else.
- 9:49I was trying to think of an example
- 9:50of this, like how do we get to
- 9:52this place of looking down on others when
- 9:54it's so silly.
- 9:55And I was reminded of the fifth grade
- 9:57boys partner badminton tournament at Wheaton Christian Grammar
- 10:02School in the 90s.
- 10:03So when I was in fifth grade, we
- 10:05had this tournament in gym class where we
- 10:08would be in partners, two boys together, and
- 10:11we would play badminton.
- 10:13And then after each round of badminton, we
- 10:14would advance.
- 10:15And eventually, there was one pair that was
- 10:17beating everybody else.
- 10:18And that pair was Christian and Blake.
- 10:20And Christian and Blake were like the ultimate
- 10:22badminton team.
- 10:22They were athletic guys.
- 10:24They figured out their approach.
- 10:25They just kept winning again and again and
- 10:27again and again.
- 10:28And when you're a fifth grader, your ego
- 10:29gets into those things.
- 10:30You're like, oh, man, I wish I could
- 10:32be like Christian and Blake.
- 10:34I wish I could rule the badminton court.
- 10:37But at the remove of a decade and
- 10:39a half or more, two decades, looking back
- 10:42on that, you can see this is not
- 10:44something to set your ego on.
- 10:46The fifth grade Wheaton Christian Grammar School boys
- 10:48gym class tournament is not like the elite
- 10:51performance arena of male athletics.
- 10:55Like it's not even middle school.
- 10:56It's a step below middle school.
- 10:59And there's so many other athletic arenas beyond
- 11:01that.
- 11:01There's middle school.
- 11:02There's high school.
- 11:02There's actual tournaments where multiple schools compete.
- 11:05There's college athletics.
- 11:06There's the pros.
- 11:07There's the Olympics.
- 11:09And when we sit around feeling snooty towards
- 11:11someone else, because we've somehow grown in some
- 11:13part of God's grace, and we think we're
- 11:15better than them, it's like us as a
- 11:17fifth grade badminton player being like, I won
- 11:19the Wheaton Christian Grammar School tourney.
- 11:21I'm so hot.
- 11:22I'm hot stuff.
- 11:23Well, Jesus is this Olympian who's showing us
- 11:26how human life is actually meant to be
- 11:28lived.
- 11:30So the problem with looking down on other
- 11:31people is that you're looking the wrong direction.
- 11:33What we need to is look up to
- 11:36Jesus.
- 11:37And then we see like, oh, Jesus.
- 11:39There's no comparison between how I'm living and
- 11:41how Jesus lives.
- 11:43I've still got plenty of room to grow.
- 11:45When we set our eyes on Jesus, it
- 11:46inspires humility and it keeps us focused on
- 11:48the right thing, which is how do I
- 11:50keep growing, not comparing myself to someone else.
- 11:54So that raises the question, how do we
- 11:56grow in goodness?
- 11:57How do we get this genuine experience of
- 11:59deep inner goodness from Jesus?
- 12:02Well, it is by looking up to Jesus.
- 12:05The biblical language for this is seeking his
- 12:08face.
- 12:09And this is something that we can do
- 12:10during the work day.
- 12:12Often when we think about work, we think
- 12:14of it in a separate category from say
- 12:16church.
- 12:17Like we go to church and we might
- 12:19even prepare ourselves.
- 12:20Like if you have a prelude before your
- 12:22church service or like a coffee hour, you
- 12:24have some sort of time for anticipation, for
- 12:26quieting your soul, for getting ready to worship
- 12:30because it's like, I'm going to seek God's
- 12:31face.
- 12:32I'm going to look for God's face during
- 12:34this worship service.
- 12:36And this language might be a little bit
- 12:38unusual.
- 12:38Like we don't use this language in terms
- 12:40of how we describe other friendships in our
- 12:43life.
- 12:43Like I don't say like, oh, I'm seeking
- 12:44Kevin's face today.
- 12:46If you'll be like, huh, what?
- 12:47And this was pointed out to me by
- 12:48an atheist friend of mine.
- 12:50I like put a Facebook post up once,
- 12:51which was quoting a verse that said, Lord,
- 12:53I seek your face.
- 12:55And she commented, where did it go?
- 12:57Where did God's face go?
- 12:58That you have to go looking for it.
- 13:00And so sometimes it's helpful to have friends
- 13:01who are just a little bit irreverent and
- 13:02can point out the oddities of the language
- 13:04that we use or even the oddity of
- 13:05certain biblical phrases.
- 13:08But in our own context, we seek people's
- 13:10faces all the time, even if we don't
- 13:12use that language of seeking people's face.
- 13:14Think about social media.
- 13:15One of the first platforms to really explode
- 13:17was Facebook because we want to see other
- 13:21people's faces, the people that we care about.
- 13:23We want to see what their life is
- 13:24like.
- 13:25We want to see them in the context
- 13:26of our everyday life and their everyday life.
- 13:29And that's exactly what the biblical language of
- 13:31seeking God's face is about.
- 13:33It's, can I see what God is like?
- 13:36Can I see him in my everyday life?
- 13:38Can I see what really matters to him?
- 13:42One of the Psalms that includes this phrase
- 13:44can really help us here.
- 13:45This is Psalm 27.
- 13:47Read a couple of verses.
- 13:48Starting in verse 7.
- 13:50Hear my voice when I call, O Lord.
- 13:52Be merciful to me and answer me.
- 13:55My heart says of you, seek his face.
- 13:58Your face, Lord, I will seek.
- 14:00Do not hide your face from me.
- 14:02Do not turn your servant away in anger.
- 14:05You have been my helper.
- 14:07Do not reject or forsake me, O God,
- 14:10my Savior.
- 14:11And then skipping down to verse 13.
- 14:14I am still confident of this.
- 14:16I will see the goodness of the Lord
- 14:19in the land of the living.
- 14:22What the Psalm means by the land of
- 14:24the living is I will see the goodness
- 14:26of the Lord right here in my present
- 14:28experience.
- 14:29I don't have to wait for some future
- 14:31occasion.
- 14:31I don't have to wait for some different
- 14:32set of circumstances to see the goodness of
- 14:35the Lord, to see his face.
- 14:37I can see him where I am right
- 14:39now.
- 14:41And that's good news for our life with
- 14:42God at work.
- 14:44If you've seen the play or the movie
- 14:46Fiddler on the Roof, there's this song where
- 14:48Tevye the milkman sings, you know, if I
- 14:50were a rich man, I'd have the time
- 14:51that I lack to sit in the synagogue
- 14:53and pray.
- 14:54Like, oh, I've got this pesky job being
- 14:55a milkman and that's what's preventing me from
- 14:57having a life with God that I want.
- 14:59And we can think about our jobs that
- 15:00way, can't we?
- 15:01Where it's like, oh, if I just didn't
- 15:03have this job, then I could really be
- 15:04a Christian of prayer.
- 15:05But you do have this job.
- 15:08And so thinking about your job as a
- 15:10place where you can see God at work.
- 15:13Can change your experience of the workday.
- 15:15Come to work with that same kind of
- 15:17anticipation that you bring to church.
- 15:19Come to work with the anticipation, I might
- 15:21see Jesus here today.
- 15:24And if it's helpful, you can even pray
- 15:25that prayer.
- 15:26When you open the door of your workplace,
- 15:27when you pull that door open, or when
- 15:29you sit down at your laptop, if you
- 15:30work from home, just pray that prayer.
- 15:33Jesus, show me where you are today.
- 15:37Because if we're anticipating, if we're keeping our
- 15:38eyes open, we're more likely to see where
- 15:41Jesus is at work in our workplaces.
- 15:43And then at the end of your workday,
- 15:45when you pull that door open to leave,
- 15:46or when you close your laptop, you can
- 15:48just do a very simple prayer.
- 15:51God, where were you today?
- 15:54God, where did I see you today?
- 15:57And even that review of your day will
- 15:59help you notice, oh, I saw the goodness
- 16:01of God in the land of the living.
- 16:04I saw the face of Jesus in my
- 16:06workplace, in this interaction, in this moment, in
- 16:09this encouragement, in this challenge.

- 16:15yourself.
- 16:16Because that's how we grow in goodness, is
- 16:18by spending time with our good God, by

- 16:25And the way we do that at work
- 16:26is by remembering that God does everything, and
- 16:28we do something at work just as much
- 16:30as anywhere else.
- 16:34Lord Jesus, you are good.
- 16:36And we want to see your goodness in
- 16:38the land of the living.
- 16:39We want to see your goodness in our
- 16:40workplace.
- 16:42Show us how to keep our eyes open
- 16:44to you.
- 16:46Show us how to trust in your goodness
- 16:48and increase ours just a little bit more.
- 16:52Do your work in us as we do
- 16:54our work with you.
- 16:56Amen.
