- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Hall of Fame head coach Gino Oriema as
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Huskies will take on to Paul Sunday, and it's
- 0:05Speaker 1: not just the Big East home opener at Gample, but
- 0:09Speaker 1: the number ten is going to be retired pregame, and
- 0:12Speaker 1: then of course that would be Sue Byrd. Ironically, I
- 0:15Speaker 1: got a text today from our friend Carl Adamick, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: he was picking my brain about some of the top
- 0:21Speaker 1: five Sue Byrd moments. He mentioned two thousand at Tennessee,
- 0:26Speaker 1: the Big East Final of course in O one, the
- 0:28Speaker 1: Elite Eight in two thousand and two against Old Dominion,
- 0:30Speaker 1: which if you've never seen video of that fans, the
- 0:34Speaker 1: first half is basically about as good as a Yukon
- 0:37Speaker 1: basketball team has ever played, and then the National Championship
- 0:41Speaker 1: game against Oklahoma. But Sue obviously just embraces everything what
- 0:47Speaker 1: Yukon women's basketball is about. And she's not the last
- 0:50Speaker 1: person that's going to have a number retired anytime soon,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and you've got a few of them coming.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, one of the best things that happened in
- 1:00Speaker 2: the NCAA is that you can wear any number you
- 1:02Speaker 2: feel like now, because we're gonna run out of numbers
- 1:06Speaker 2: for such you know, so you know, you can wear
- 1:11Speaker 2: ninety nine if you want. And uh, you know, people,
- 1:15Speaker 2: it's like the Celtics, you know, it's a it's a
- 1:17Speaker 2: it's a privilege and an honor to to look up
- 1:21Speaker 2: in the you know, in the rafters and and be
- 1:24Speaker 2: able to see so many, ah, so many great players
- 1:29Speaker 2: that have played, you know, in your program. And if
- 1:34Speaker 2: you and if you think back, you know of Sue's career,
- 1:39Speaker 2: the the incredible impact that she had on and off
- 1:45Speaker 2: the court. Uh, the tremendous talent that she played with
- 1:50Speaker 2: that you know, Uh, it certainly wasn't easy to be
- 1:58Speaker 2: out on the floor with that many Olympic future Olympians
- 2:01Speaker 2: and future you know, superstars and Hall of famers, uh,
- 2:07Speaker 2: and and be able to direct traffic and be able
- 2:09Speaker 2: to keep everybody happy and and Sue uh, both as
- 2:16Speaker 2: a playmaker, as a defender, as a shooter, as a tourer,
- 2:21Speaker 2: as a leader. You know, when you think about it,
- 2:25Speaker 2: there there isn't a h a facet of the game
- 2:31Speaker 2: that you would say, you know, she was a little
- 2:34Speaker 2: bit lacking in that area. You could you could arguably
- 2:39Speaker 2: say that no one has ever been better, had as
- 2:43Speaker 2: many things on the court as uh as Sue was.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I think of that O two regional
- 2:51Speaker 1: final against Old Dominion. I mean, the first half was
- 2:54Speaker 1: a clinic. You don't get to see that very often.
- 2:57Speaker 1: The precision, the execution, how everything went. I'm hard pressed
- 3:02Speaker 1: to find a half of basketball, and I'm sure there
- 3:05Speaker 1: might be a few of them in your time, in
- 3:07Speaker 1: your forty years. But given the time, the circumstances, that's
- 3:11Speaker 1: about as good as it gets, isn't it.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I think so I have going back and watched some
- 3:17Speaker 2: of that game, and now that we're talking about it,
- 3:21Speaker 2: I might go back and watch some of it again.
- 3:23Speaker 2: But as I was watching it, I was absolutely mesmerized
- 3:30Speaker 2: by what was happening. The only thing that comes close
- 3:37Speaker 2: is the game against Mississippi State wherever that was. Was
- 3:43Speaker 2: it Bridgeport?
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 3:45Speaker 2: Or was it Bridgeport? Yeah?
- 3:47Speaker 1: Sweet sixteen game?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay. The only thing that comes close was that
- 3:53Speaker 2: game where we beat a really, really, really good team
- 3:57Speaker 2: by a number that it never happened at that level.
- 4:02Speaker 2: But it had nothing to do with, you know, Mississippi
- 4:05Speaker 2: State not being good. It had everything to do with
- 4:09Speaker 2: just how incredibly well we played as a group. But
- 4:16Speaker 2: certainly you know that two thousand and two teams. Again,
- 4:22Speaker 2: you know, some of the things that were done had
- 4:26Speaker 2: never been done before. You had never seen a team,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you know, play that well together again in a in
- 4:37Speaker 2: a time of the year where only good teams are left, right,
- 4:42Speaker 2: I mean, only great teams left. So if anybody hasn't
- 4:46Speaker 2: seen that game, I'm sure it's on YouTube. Yeh, go
- 4:49Speaker 2: find it, and you know, before you go to the
- 4:52Speaker 2: game on Sunday, you'll you'll get a pretty good appreciation
- 4:57Speaker 2: of what what that kid was doing at time.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of parallels now that you bring
- 5:02Speaker 1: it up from that two game in the in the
- 5:05Speaker 1: sixteen game against Mississippi State, and I mean you had
- 5:08Speaker 1: four seniors in O two. You had three seniors on
- 5:11Speaker 1: the sixteen team. The death was there, the talent was there.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Just so many similarities. Now, obviously the two team you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: had Diana Tarazi, that certainly helps, but but yeah, it's
- 5:23Speaker 1: just scary to think the parallels between those two games
- 5:26Speaker 1: and those two teams at that particular time.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah, isn't it something that uh, that twenty sixteen team,
- 5:38Speaker 2: I think they had the number one, two, three picks
- 5:40Speaker 2: in the draft yep, and that two thousand and two team.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I think they went one two four maybe I'm not sure.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I think it was one two four six something like that. Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, Sue went first, Win went second, and I think
- 6:02Speaker 2: Tamika Williams went fourth and Asia Jones went sixth, which
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know, it's pretty incredible. Uh, you're right, the similarities
- 6:15Speaker 2: between those two starting five Uh was poof. Uh that's
- 6:23Speaker 2: uh uh it's good and bad because now I want
- 6:26Speaker 2: every game to be like that. So I'm I'm the
- 6:29Speaker 2: biggest culprit of like, why can't we play like that
- 6:32Speaker 2: all the time? And and you know, so here I
- 6:34Speaker 2: am telling everybody don't expect that. Meanwhile, I went to
- 6:37Speaker 2: every game and I get pissed when we're not like that.
- 6:40Speaker 1: That's right, final type with Gino when we come back
- 6:42Speaker 1: in just a minute on the UKN Women's Basketball Coaches
- 6:45Speaker 1: Show here Onlearfield
