- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30We are talking about unhappy emotions.
- 0:34This has been a big topic already this week and it is only
- 0:38Wednesday morning my friends. So many people are talking about
- 0:42the fact that they are feeling bad that they have these unhappy
- 0:45emotions, and they're wondering what they're doing to create
- 0:49this. And they're almost chastising
- 0:52themselves for having unhappy emotions, making it seem like
- 0:56it's a bad thing to have them. And I just want to remind
- 1:02everybody in today's podcast that having emotions is
- 1:07absolutely necessary and normal because one of the most
- 1:11important things that you can do is listen to your emotions.
- 1:15So if you're having an emotion and it's unhappy, frustrated,
- 1:19it's delivering you information and your job is to listen to it
- 1:22and say, OK, what is this trying to teach me?
- 1:25What is this trying to offer to me?
- 1:26What is this trying to give me? Not sit there and be mad at
- 1:29yourself for having an unhappy emotion, no matter how great the
- 1:33situation may be. So often times we put ourselves
- 1:37into positions where we didn't necessarily pick something.
- 1:41So we know if we, let's just use an example about a family puts
- 1:45pressure on you because you've got to go to an event with them
- 1:48and you really don't want to go. But you feel obligated and
- 1:52you're unhappy that you have to go and you know it's going to be
- 1:54a problem and you're just anxious about it.
- 1:57It's causing you to feel bad and you really, truly don't want to
- 2:01go. Now, I'm not talking about just
- 2:02the kind that's like, man, I just wish I didn't have to go,
- 2:05but I know it'll make somebody happy and you can find a path to
- 2:09joy through making someone else happy.
- 2:11Great. I've done that with my own
- 2:13family before. I'm talking about the kind that
- 2:16just resides in your gut and tells you this is just, I don't
- 2:20want to do it. I know it's going to be
- 2:21uncomfortable. I'm going to get there.
- 2:23I'm not going to have it, you know, a good time in any way,
- 2:27shape or form. And there's somebody there that
- 2:29really pushes your buttons or whatever it might be.
- 2:33Whatever the situation is, you are getting a clear message that
- 2:37says this is not a good idea. And the closer the event comes,
- 2:40the more you feel worked up, sick, and it's just, you know,
- 2:47unending. It just keeps going and going
- 2:49and going. That's what I'm talking about
- 2:51right now. So what is that emotion trying
- 2:53to teach you? It's teaching you.
- 2:55You have to change your approach.
- 2:56It's teaching you you have to do something different.
- 2:59It's trying to give you feedback that says this is not good and
- 3:02we need to have some more safety certainty.
- 3:06You know, we need to have some answers around it.
- 3:09And when you don't give it those answers, when you don't sit and
- 3:11have a conversation with yourself about how do I get to
- 3:14that place, what fundamentally starts to happen is the
- 3:19inevitable breakdown of feeling that you are going to be able to
- 3:23control yourself in the situation.
- 3:24It starts to get worse. You start to catastrophize.
- 3:28Creativity starts to use its ability to sit with fear,
- 3:32anxiety, judgement, and it starts to make things much more
- 3:36worth, much more worse. And now all of a sudden the
- 3:39catastrophes start appearing and you're just right down that
- 3:42rabbit hole, so to speak. So it's important to ask the
- 3:46emotion as soon as it shows up. You know, I'm a big believer in
- 3:50killing the monsters when they're tiny.
- 3:52So you have to actually stop and ask yourself, what is this
- 3:54emotion trying to teach me right now?
- 3:56What is what is the information that I should be getting from
- 3:59this so that I can utilize it and use it to the best of my
- 4:03ability to understand how to feel better, not to suffer.
- 4:08I mean, pain is inevitable, but suffering definitely is
- 4:10optional. So you once you get that
- 4:13information and you say, OK, this is what it's trying to
- 4:16teach me, like let's go back to the event you don't want to go
- 4:19to. It's saying if you go to the
- 4:20event, this is what's going to happen.
- 4:22This is how it's going to feel. I just feel like there's no
- 4:25winning in this. And then you can actually ask
- 4:27yourself, well, is there, is there a way that if I go with a
- 4:30different group or if I, you know, avoid going for too long,
- 4:35if I only show up for a period of time with that work, you can
- 4:38start to think through other possibilities other than the
- 4:41doom and gloom. That is just the one possibility
- 4:44that we tend to latch onto and stick to.
- 4:47When you get in these loops, you stop thinking about
- 4:50possibilities and other ways out.
- 4:52You have to break that pattern in order to get to the new
- 4:55pattern. So it's a strategy.
- 4:57It's helpful if you try it that way, but it only works if you
- 5:01can stop it as quickly as possible by asking in the very
- 5:05beginning when these emotions start showing up, what to do
- 5:08about them. Otherwise, they start to take
- 5:10over and before you know it, there's no other option in your
- 5:13head and you're the fly up against the window hitting the
- 5:15glass, not realizing the window is wide open down below.
- 5:19So if you've been having those thoughts, that's a great way to
- 5:22debrief them and learn something from it.
- 5:25All right my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I will
- 5:27see you tomorrow. Bye.
