- 0:09the Chicago Cubs faced the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 0:11in a Monday night game at Dodger Stadium. The
- 0:14Cubs, managed by the charismatic Leo de Rocher
- 0:16in his sixth year as skipper, had struggled to
- 0:18be better than a 500 team over the past five
- 0:21years and entered this game with a 2 -5 record.
- 0:25The Dodgers, led by Walt Alston in his 17th season,
- 0:28had experienced significant success early in
- 0:30his tenure with six National League pennants
- 0:32in his first 12 seasons, but had been stuck in
- 0:35mediocrity as a 500 club over the last five years.
- 0:39The Cubs sent Ken Holtzman to the mound. Holtzman,
- 0:43who finished the 1970 season with 17 wins, was
- 0:46looking to rebound from a poor first start in
- 0:48the 1971 season, where he gave up six runs in
- 0:51four innings against the Astros. The Dodgers
- 0:53countered with Sandy Vance, making his first
- 0:56start of the season coming off a strong rookie
- 0:58year in 1970 with a 7 -7 record. This audio recording
- 1:02is from the Los Angeles radio broadcast featuring
- 1:04announcers Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett. Run
- 1:27Becker to second base. Billy Williams in left
- 1:31field. Ron Sato at third. Joe Pepitone at first.
- 1:39Johnny Callison in right. Jose Ortiz in center.
- 1:45J .C. Martin is the catcher. And Kenny Holtzman
- 1:48the pitcher. For the Dodgers, Maury Wills at
- 1:52short. Manny Mota in right. West Parker at first.
- 1:58Richie Allen in left. Bill Sudeikis catching.
- 2:02Virginia LeFevre makes the start tonight at second
- 2:05base. Steve Garvey at third. Bill Russell in
- 2:10center. And Sandy Vance to do the pitching. The
- 2:14umpires will be Harvey at the plate. Dale Gorman
- 2:17and Pellacudas on the bases. Both the Cubs and
- 2:20the Dodgers have identical records in the young
- 2:22season. Two and four. The Dodgers on the home
- 2:25stand have seven games left before they go on
- 2:27an extensive road trip. So they hope to get things
- 2:30going here at home with the Cubs, the Cardinals,
- 2:32and then the Astros over the weekend, Friday,
- 2:34Saturday, and Sunday. Tomorrow night, Milk Pappas
- 2:37will go against Bill Singer. And then the Dodgers
- 2:41get set up for the St. Louis series beginning
- 2:43on Wednesday. Now we're ready. Time to play ball.
- 2:45The Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs from Dodger
- 2:47Stadium. And now for the play -by -play, here's
- 2:50Vince Kelly. Ready? Thank you, Jerry. Hi, everybody,
- 2:52and a very pleasant good evening to you, wherever
- 2:54you may be. The Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs,
- 2:57trying to find out what it's all about. They
- 2:59both feel they had good ball clubs, and they
- 3:01both start off on a rocky beginning for 1971.
- 3:05The Dodgers have had some frustrating games,
- 3:07but the Cubs have had a couple of dillies. One
- 3:10in Houston they still have not recovered from,
- 3:13where they lost the game in the ninth inning
- 3:15on a balk and an error. Here's Don Kessinger,
- 3:18the switch hitting shortstop, and he takes low
- 3:20ball one, 1 -0. Sandy Vance and Bill Sudeikis,
- 3:24with Wes Parker and Jimmy LaFever, Maury Wills
- 3:27and Steve Garvey, Richie Allen, Bill Russell,
- 3:32and Manny Moda. Big chopper to LaFever who has
- 3:34to back up, gloves it at the chest, and throws
- 3:36him out. One away, and the batter, Glenn Becker.
- 3:48Glenn Becker hitting 269. Boy, if he ever was
- 3:52a company man or a team man, he would be the
- 3:55guy. What a valuable ball player he is. Right
- 3:58-hand hitter, Glenn Becker. Sandy Vance reading
- 4:02Bill Sudeikis. Sandy into the windup and the
- 4:05right -handed delivers low in the dirt, ball
- 4:06one, one and all. You might get some idea of
- 4:11Sandy Vance and how well he is doing tonight.
- 4:14by the use of one descriptive word on his pitches,
- 4:17high or low. If he stays low all night, he'll
- 4:21give the Cubs fits. There's a high fastball in
- 4:24the count ball, too, 2 and 0. If Vance keeps
- 4:27the ball down or on the knees on the hitters,
- 4:29he can be a very tough young pitcher. But if
- 4:32the ball starts to come up on him, then he's
- 4:34in trouble. 2 and 0 to count to Glenn Beckard.
- 4:37Billy Williams on deck. Sandy into the wind -up.
- 4:41Now the 2 -0 pitch on the way. Pass ball for
- 4:44a strike. 2 -1. Mance, of course, trying to hook
- 4:51on as the number four starter in the Dodger rotation.
- 4:55Trying to join Sutton Osteen and Singer. The
- 4:582 -1 pitch to Becker. Very high. Ball three.
- 5:013 -1. Now the 3 -1 pitch on the way. Fastball
- 5:16over, strike two. Full count to Glenn Becker.
- 5:27Billy Williams on deck. Becker ready and hits
- 5:34a ground ball slowly to Wills. Maury gloves it
- 5:36almost at the shoulders and throws him out two
- 5:39down. Billy Williams coming up. Williams started
- 5:51his year off in fine style. If you remember opening
- 5:54day in Chicago, he had a 10th inning home run
- 5:57to beat Bob Gibson 2 -1. Williams hitting 3 -33,
- 6:04and he has three home runs in the six games he
- 6:06has played. Left -hand hitter, Vance Reddy in
- 6:10delivers, high and inside, ball one, 1 -0. Wanna
- 6:20know the count of Billy? Bansu works quickly,
- 6:24comes right back to the plate, fastball and a
- 6:27high fly ball into shallow right. Lefebvre out
- 6:30and calling. Moda coming in, but it's Lefebvre.
- 6:35So it's a rare first inning for a Dodger pitcher
- 6:38outside of Osteen. He gets out of it one, two,
- 6:41three, and at the end of half an inning, the
- 6:43Cubs nothing and the Dodgers coming up. This
- 6:45is Sergeant Larry Gallup with a Crimestop message
- 6:47for you. The deaths of two Phoenix police officers
- 6:51are grim reminders of what can happen even in
- 6:53a fine city like Phoenix. This tragedy was followed
- 6:56with cries of outraged indignation, shock, and
- 6:59sorrow. How could this have been prevented? What
- 7:02can I do to help? Who's responsible? These were
- 7:06just a few of the questions that we all asked
- 7:08ourselves. The reality of crime on our streets
- 7:10is no longer one of statistics, local and national
- 7:13crime rate, or other impersonal crime -related
- 7:16information. We must keep the criminals out of
- 7:19our city and let them know that we will not tolerate
- 7:22crimes against our persons or property. Crime
- 7:25Stop at 2626 -151 is the safest, simplest method
- 7:30in which you can help wage the war on crime.
- 7:33If you see or hear suspicious activities or crimes
- 7:36in progress, call Crime Stop at 2626 -151. Remember,
- 7:43all you've got to lose is crime. Bottom of the
- 7:47first inning, the Cubs fail to score. The Dodgers
- 7:50will have Maury Wills, Manny Motta, and Wes Parker.
- 8:12Maury Wills, inning right -handed against Kenny
- 8:14Holtzman. Lost his first start of the year going
- 8:18four and two third innings against Houston Left
- 8:21-hander beat the Dodgers twice last year and
- 8:23he has a three -to -one record against them lifetime
- 8:26fastball high and outside ball one Postman's
- 8:29lifetime record against the Dodgers 12 victories
- 8:32and only four defeat. So he's rough He graduated
- 8:36from the University of Illinois Kenny is only
- 8:4025. He won't be 26 until November another pitch
- 8:43outside ball two setting the Cubs defensively
- 8:47Kenny Holtzman and JC Martin the infield at Joe
- 8:50Pepitone and Glenn Becker Don Kessinger and Ron
- 8:53Santo with Billy Williams Jose Ortiz and Johnny
- 8:56Callison in the outfield the pitch a strike and
- 8:59the count two and one We were asking Leo DeRosier
- 9:04about his great young catcher Randy Hundley who
- 9:07hurt his knee in spring training hurt the other
- 9:09knee because he had one injury a year ago Two
- 9:12and ease. The two -one pitch a strike. Two and
- 9:14two. Anyway, Leo said that Randy Hundley will
- 9:19catch Wednesday in San Diego. So we said, well,
- 9:23if it's that close, why doesn't he catch tomorrow?
- 9:26And as only Leo could say, Leo put it, I'd rather
- 9:29be 10 minutes late than 10 minutes early. In
- 9:31other words, there was no reason to rush Hundley,
- 9:34so give me extra day. Passball is swung on and
- 9:37missed, apparently. Dropped by catcher Martin,
- 9:40who tags out Will. And more he turns and rather
- 9:43unhappy about it walks away. He never broke towards
- 9:46first. One out. Here's Manny Moda. Kenny Holtzman,
- 9:56in his rookie year, led the Chicago Cubs in wins
- 10:00and strikeouts. That would be 1966. His last
- 10:05two years he won 17. The Cubs feel that he is
- 10:08now ready to win 20. He's 6 '275 pounder. His
- 10:14fastball is high, ball one. Last year he worked
- 10:23in 288 innings, which is a sign of a real star
- 10:27in the league to work that many. Curveball, but
- 10:30it's high. It's the first curve he's thrown,
- 10:312 -0. He one hit the Giants last year, beat them.
- 10:40and a tidy little affair 15 to nothing and he's
- 10:44had a two hitter and a three hitter last year
- 10:47the next one to motor strike in the count two
- 10:49and one I did one time last year folks in the
- 11:01league was starting to consider Holtzman a serious
- 11:04threat to Don Drysdale's string of scoreless
- 11:06innings pitches swung on and missed right to
- 11:10Holtzman had 33 consecutive scoreless innings
- 11:13before the streak was snapped. Ken Holtzman.
- 11:20He's been in the leagues since 66 and he is just
- 11:22now really becoming a star. Left -hander checking
- 11:26J .C. Martin. Now Ken Ruddy in the 2 -2 pitch.
- 11:30Fastball fouled away. Kicks off the backstop
- 11:32screen into the crowd. Among his other credits
- 11:41for 1970, Holtzman tied a National League record
- 11:46that held and held solely by Johnny Padres of
- 11:49the Dodgers. He struck out the first five batters
- 11:52against the New York Mets that he faced. Here
- 11:57comes a 2 -2 pitch. Fastball poked on the ground
- 11:59to Pepitone. Joe to the bag easily for the second
- 12:02out. Here is Wes Parker. Wes Parker hitting right
- 12:26-handed against Ken Holtzman. No score, two down
- 12:31in the first inning. Sandy Vance and left -hander
- 12:33Holtzman. Breaking ball over for a strike on
- 12:37one. Tomorrow night should be a dandy, Milk Tappas,
- 12:41who is off his shutout from Houston, will start
- 12:43for Chicago. And for the Dodgers, Bill Singer.
- 12:50Here's the strike one pitch to Parker, outside
- 12:52and high, one ball, one strike. Holtzman has
- 13:02had a no -hitter. He no -hitted Atlanta. in August
- 13:07at Wrigley Field of 1969. He has all the signs
- 13:11and shown all the credentials of being a superstar.
- 13:13Line drive at Glenn Beckert, and Mort Parker
- 13:16has really hit in some tough luck in the first
- 13:18week of the season. He is at more line drives
- 13:21with people than any other Dodger. They're out
- 13:23of order and at the end of an inning, no score.
- 13:34People have no pride in their work. No spirit.
- 13:37Nobody really knows his job anymore. Now take
- 13:40this guy. Now George, I wanna ask you something.
- 13:42Yes, sir? Would you happen to have any idea why
- 13:44they call this gasoline Super 76? Well, sir,
- 13:47wouldn't you say a gasoline with five engine
- 13:49cleaners to keep your engine, carburetor, and
- 13:51anti -pollution valve clean is pretty super?
- 13:54Don't say a word, Marge. Not a word. Union Oil
- 14:00thinks a clean engine is pretty important. That's
- 14:03why you'll find five engine cleaners in Super
- 14:0576, Union Oil's premium gasoline. Because a cleaner
- 14:08engine runs better, and it helps reduce pollution.
- 14:12Well, there's a man who certainly has a spirit.
- 14:14No, he's just the exception that proves the rule.
- 14:16George, I could almost think you had trouble
- 14:19admitting when you're wrong. The spirit of 76
- 14:21lives at Union Oil. Second inning, no score in
- 14:26the ballgame. The Cubs and the Dodgers. Ron Santo,
- 14:29the captain of the Cubs, followed by Joe Pepitone,
- 14:32and then Johnny Callison. Santo gives every appearance
- 14:37of an outward -going, easy -going guy. He's very
- 14:41bright, enthusiastic, well -liked by the players
- 14:43in the league. But Santo has been bothered by
- 14:47stomach pains for quite some time, and he was
- 14:51examined today by the Dodgers team physician,
- 14:53Dr. Robert Woods. Santo... felt that he had an
- 14:58ulcer. Fortunately, the examination said no.
- 15:02The pitch is low, close enough for Harvey to
- 15:04start to bring up his right arm. One in all to
- 15:06count. However, Ron Santo was warned by Dr. Wood
- 15:09that they did detect an inflammation in the area
- 15:13where an ulcer could develop. Here's the 1 -0
- 15:16pitch. Santo takes low, ball two. Immediately,
- 15:19you say to yourself, how is he doing? Well, Santo
- 15:22has been to bat 18 times. He has four hits. That's
- 15:26a 222 average. The 2 -0 pitch to Ron Santo. Low
- 15:35again, ball three. However, that's all right
- 15:37as far as the Dodger pitching plans are concerned.
- 15:40They don't mind Vance walking somebody as long
- 15:43as he is low. As we mentioned earlier, the key
- 15:46to Sandy's performance usually is the use of
- 15:49the word high or low. Here's a 3 -0 fish on the
- 15:54way. That's high. Ball four, Stano's a boy. That'll
- 16:01bring up Joe Pepitone. Joe Pepitone hit 345 against
- 16:14the Dodgers last year. In fact, six cubs hit
- 16:17300 or more against the Dodgers. Pepitone is
- 16:21without a doubt one of the truly big characters
- 16:25in organized baseball today and one of the better
- 16:27life pitches high and away ball one one and oh
- 16:30last year he was chauffeured to and from Wrigley
- 16:36Field by a limousine with a television set in
- 16:39the back and he would usually drive alongside
- 16:42the visiting team bus on the way to the ballpark
- 16:44and kind of grandly wave his hand how do you
- 16:47do nice to have you in town Joe left -hand batter
- 16:55fans delivers and Pepitone takes low ball to
- 16:582 -0 Two things have happened to Pepitone In
- 17:03fact one of a very serious nature, but in the
- 17:06result of the serious nature He no doubt is hearing
- 17:10it from the bench jockeys in the league Here's
- 17:14a 2 -0 pitch coming up to Pep And he hits a high
- 17:17pop line to shallow center. Wilson LeFevre out.
- 17:20Russell coming. It's LeFevre as he falls on his
- 17:23right side. Nice play by Frenchy. One away. In
- 17:32an article about Pepitone's expenses for the
- 17:35year. It was mentioned because Joe is in the
- 17:42hair business. He makes hair pieces. He wears
- 17:44hair pieces. It was mentioned in the article
- 17:47that Expense for hair treatment a hundred and
- 17:51fifty dollars a month And you can just imagine
- 17:54the bench jockeys in the league letting them
- 17:56hear about that Here's Johnny Callison who is
- 17:59391 against the Dodgers last year pass ball for
- 18:03a strike However, anything is a come -down from
- 18:07Nate Colbert here at Dodger Stadium Big Nate
- 18:10just punch holes in the ballpark Callison up
- 18:15there with one out. Santo at first held on by
- 18:18Wes Parker. Vance at the belt, a backward glance
- 18:21at Santo, and Callison a half swing and a popper
- 18:24up along first base foul. 0 and 2. It has been
- 18:31a quiet year so far for the Lions. He's standing
- 18:34in the dugout right now, hands behind his back,
- 18:37pacing up and down, but he has matured like rare
- 18:40wine, has Leo. We asked him if he had been kicked
- 18:43out of a game so far this year, the answer was
- 18:45no. We asked him if he had been warned about
- 18:48the fact he would be kicked out of a game this
- 18:50year, and the answer is no. But he was almost
- 18:53kicked out of an exhibition game. The strike
- 18:56two pitch is a ground ball hit slowly to Wills.
- 18:58He goes back till a fever, that's all. The throw
- 19:01to first not nearly in time. So the fourth place
- 19:04takes four. Two down. During an exhibition game
- 19:10in Tempe, Arizona this spring, Leo disagreed
- 19:14rather violently with an American League umpire.
- 19:18And the word is that the American League umpire
- 19:20kicked him out of the game. And Leo said, wait
- 19:22a minute. You mean to tell me you're going to
- 19:24kick me out of an exhibition game and deprive
- 19:26me of a chance of looking at my young ballplayer
- 19:29and you, an American League umpire? No way. He
- 19:32said, what I'll do is I'll go over in the far
- 19:34corner of the dugout and sit quietly. And that's
- 19:36just what he did. So he was kicked out but he
- 19:38didn't go and it didn't count. So the lion is
- 19:42still untouched, unmarred, and unblemished by
- 19:441971. A very good spirit. Here is Jose Ortiz.
- 19:50He sat in the shadow in Chicago last year of
- 19:53their center fielder Ken Berry, who is now of
- 19:55course with the Angels. Ortiz takes low, ball
- 19:58one, one and all. Ortiz. is 8 -4 -18, including
- 20:06a double and an RBI. He has been timed going
- 20:12from home plate to first base in 3 -9, 3 .9 seconds.
- 20:18The pitch to Ortiz, ground ball down to Wills.
- 20:20He goes a short way to Lefevre, and that'll do
- 20:22it. No runs, no hits, a man left. At the end
- 20:25of an inning and a half, no score. Schlitz, Milwaukee,
- 20:29and the world. By 19, I first put out the sea.
- 20:38By 19, I'd sailed around the world. And now?
- 20:42Well, let's just say I've seen and done a lot.
- 20:45Enough for a lifetime? I doubt it. But there's
- 20:52always one more port ahead, so I keep going.
- 21:00I figure you only get one chance at life. Below
- 21:02it? Might as well quit. Oh, someday I'll go home.
- 21:07But right now I'll take home where I find it.
- 21:10And I find it. Why, I can order a Schlitz in
- 21:13seven different languages. And if that doesn't
- 21:16make you feel at home, I don't know what does.
- 21:19It seems that Schlitz is always one quarter ahead
- 21:21of me. Which is okay by me. Why settle for less?
- 21:26When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer.
- 21:35To the bottom of the second inning, no score
- 21:37in the ball game, Richie Allen, Bill Sudeikis,
- 21:40and Jimmy LaFever in that order. And Kenny Holtzman
- 21:43just about ready to go to work. Here looking
- 21:49out at the Chicago Bullpen brings back memories
- 21:52of just a few years ago through the mainstays
- 21:55of the Chicago Bullpen, Phil Regan, and also
- 21:59Bob Miller. Remember Bob with the Dodgers went
- 22:01over to the American League to Minnesota. but
- 22:04he has come back to the National League and with
- 22:05the Cubs. Allen takes what looked like a change
- 22:08turned over, a screwball for a strike, 0 -1.
- 22:13Ritchie has two hits, one of them was just a
- 22:15little nubber, the other a line drive double.
- 22:200 -1 the count to Ritchie Allen. Oseman delivers,
- 22:23curve ball grounded down to third, speared there
- 22:25by Chateau, who throws him out. One away. Bill
- 22:32Sudeikis coming up During spring training I think
- 22:43we told you about an interesting story that was
- 22:46written by Wally Wilson of the Santa Monica Outlook
- 22:48About Duke Sims and his idea of hitting it was
- 22:52called breathless hitting well Sims and Sudeikis
- 22:56are roommates And now Sudeikis is a breathless
- 22:58hitter. He takes a curveball low ball one. What
- 23:01does that mean? Well, he expels all the air that
- 23:05he can out of his lungs before swinging the bat.
- 23:10And Sudeikis and Simms both feel that it helps
- 23:13you to be more relaxed, looser, and a much better
- 23:16swing. The 1 -0 pitch outside ball two. Well,
- 23:20Simms is hitting 400. Sudeikis is hitting 308.
- 23:25And when you come to Dodger Stadium, there'll
- 23:27be some hot air around home plate as well as
- 23:29up here in the booth. As long as Tim's a sedacist
- 23:32playing. Two hole pitch. Fastball. Head on the
- 23:36ground is short. Kessinger gloves it at the belt.
- 23:38In the dirt, the pep -a -ton and pep comes up
- 23:40with it. Good play by Joe. Two down. Here's Jimmy
- 23:48Lafeeva. I can't tell you what a great young
- 23:56man Jimmy LaFever is and what an asset he is
- 23:59to the ball club. And it was typical of LaFever
- 24:02the other day. Bill Russell made an incredible
- 24:05start of a double play the other night in a ball
- 24:07game the Dodgers won. Here's a pitch to Jimmy.
- 24:10Fast ball, low ball, one. And Russell came off
- 24:13the field and as Bill himself said later, he
- 24:15was kind of in a state of shock. And the first
- 24:18guy to greet him, to throw his arms around him
- 24:20and congratulate him on great play, is Jimmy
- 24:22LaFever. The boy who might lose his regular job
- 24:25to Bill Russell, but he's that kind of a guy.
- 24:28The 1 -0 pitch, high chopper to the left of short,
- 24:31speared there nicely by Kessinger, throws him
- 24:33out, and the Dodgers are gone the second inning.
- 24:36So at the end of two well -played innings, the
- 24:38Cubs nothing, the Dodgers nothing. You seldom
- 24:41hear Farmer John mention a fastball. Instead,
- 24:44he uses the expression, smokes one over you.
- 24:46I guess it's because smoke is so all -important
- 24:48in Farmer John's bacon business. In fact, it's
- 24:51what makes the flavor of Farmer John Bacon so
- 24:54delectably different. Not just any smoke either,
- 24:56but the smoke from native western wood. It's
- 24:59the old -time western way of smoking, and it
- 25:01gives every lean, meaty strip of Farmer John
- 25:04Bacon the genuine flavor of the West. Of course,
- 25:06flavor isn't all that distinguishes Farmer John
- 25:09Bacon. It's made from the finest eastern corn
- 25:12-fed pork. And to be sure his bacon is strictly
- 25:15fresh, Farmer John brings the porkers out here
- 25:18live. Then the meat's U .S. inspected and dressed
- 25:21fresh right here in the West. First chance you
- 25:23get, enjoy Farmer John Bacon, fried up so crisp
- 25:26it crackles. Believe me, you'll love it. Farmer
- 25:29John Bacon, gold medal winner at the California
- 25:32State Fair. It's the Eastern most in quality
- 25:34and the Western most in flavor. Don't forget
- 25:40tomorrow night, the concluding game of the series,
- 25:42the Dodgers and the Cubs, Milt Pappas and Bill
- 25:44Singer. Then the St. Louis Cardinals will come
- 25:46in, headlined by Orlando Cepeda, the only man
- 25:49in the league to hit eight home runs against
- 25:51the Dodgers last year. Cepeda did it. And along
- 25:55with Orlando, of course, will be Lou Brock and
- 25:57Ted Sizemore, who is now playing shortstop for
- 25:59St. Louis. They'll be in Wednesday and Thursday
- 26:02night. And then next weekend, the Houston Astros,
- 26:05Friday night, team night. saturday night ladies
- 26:07night seven o 'clock game and sunday afternoon
- 26:10autograph day and senior citizens day so make
- 26:12your plans and come on enjoy the fun we'll see
- 26:15you at dodger stadium we hope sometime during
- 26:17this week let's go to the third no score and
- 26:20for more play here's jerry doggers all right
- 26:21benny and catcher jc martin coming on martin
- 26:25was with san diego the white sox and with the
- 26:27mets before going to the cubs last year the pitch
- 26:30comes in low and it's one ball no strikes veteran
- 26:33catcher He's been around quite a while. He broke
- 26:38into the Major Leagues in 1959 with the White
- 26:40Sox. Now the windup in the 1 -0 pitch. Fastball
- 26:45a little low. Ball two. Two balls and no strikes.
- 26:48He was acquired by the Cubs just before the start
- 26:51of the 1970 season. Served as the backup catcher
- 26:57behind Randy Hundley. Now the 2 -0 pitch on the
- 27:01way. Strike on a fastball. 2 -1. Martin played
- 27:08in 40 games for Chicago last year. 2 -1 pitch.
- 27:17Taking low again, ball free. The Cubs have had
- 27:19one baserunner, Sandoval, who walked in the second.
- 27:22The Dodgers have not had a baserunner against
- 27:24Kenny Holtzman. First game of the two -game series.
- 27:30Milt Papas, Bill Singer, tomorrow night. Sandy
- 27:33Vance working here tonight. Now the wind up in
- 27:36the 3 -1 pitch on the way. Too low, he walked
- 27:39him. So Vance twice has walked the leadoff batter.
- 27:43And that'll bring to bat Kenny Holtzman the pitcher.
- 27:50Ken Holtzman coming on. Ken bats from the right
- 27:58side. He throws left. And we'll see if Leo puts
- 28:02the butt on for Holtzman. And now looks at third
- 28:04base coach Peanut Lowry. And Joe Amalfatano is
- 28:07coaching at first base. So two local lads in
- 28:10the coaching lines for Leo. The pitch to Holtzman,
- 28:15butted in the air. First base wave. Barker has
- 28:17it. And no play back to first base. So Holtzman
- 28:20pops up the butt. Well away, holding it first
- 28:24is Martin. And the batter will be Don Kessinger.
- 28:31Kessinger coming up. Switch hitter batting from
- 28:35the left side against Vance. The Dodgers and
- 28:40the Cubs were all even last year. 3 -3 here,
- 28:433 -3 in Chicago. Kessinger into the batter's
- 28:49box. All -star shortstop for the last several
- 28:52years. Don out of Mississippi. Pretty good basketball
- 28:58player there. Takes outside for the ball. One
- 29:00ball and no strikes. He was the National Leagues
- 29:03All -Star shortstop for the third straight year
- 29:06and was named in the Sporting News All -Star
- 29:08team and won a Golden Glove as the best defensive
- 29:11player in the league at the shortstop for the
- 29:13second straight year. And he hit 266. One ball,
- 29:17no strikes. Pitch on the way. Strike on the inside
- 29:20corner, knee high. And they want Vance to keep
- 29:23that ball down and he's doing it quite well tonight.
- 29:27Kessinger led the league in assists and the second
- 29:29in total chances in double plays. He led the
- 29:34team in triples and finished second to Willie
- 29:36Davis with 14. Powell allowed a play upstairs
- 29:42to the left and it's a ball and two strikes to
- 29:45Don Kessinger. He was a standout baseball and
- 29:52basketball player at the University of Mississippi.
- 29:55He was all -conference in both sports. Don is
- 30:016 '1", weighs 175 pounds. One ball, two strikes,
- 30:06one out. On it, first Martin. Vance now checks,
- 30:10runner going, pitch on the waste one on the missed
- 30:12throw down by Sudeikis. Too high, and he's been
- 30:14safe. So Kessinger strikes out, and with the
- 30:18runner Martin going, he beats the throw. Well,
- 30:21Wills had to go to the second base side of the
- 30:22bag to handle it. Here's Becord coming on a little
- 30:26pause for station identification. This is the
- 30:28Los Angeles Dodgers radio network Glenn Becord
- 30:42at bat now grounded out his first time up Becord
- 30:46grounded a will Martin is on second now advanced
- 30:49check pitch on the way. Fly ball to right field.
- 30:52Manny Mota coming fast for it. Long way to go.
- 30:54Can't get it. Drops in for a base hit. The run
- 30:57is in. And the cut lead one to nothing. As Becker
- 31:01looks to fly ball to the shallow right field.
- 31:04Mota raced as far as he could. Skidded. Cut it
- 31:08on the short hop. And Martin scores the run.
- 31:12That brings up Willie Williams who popped up
- 31:14his first time at bat. So Becker gets the first
- 31:17hit of the game and it's good for a run. So the
- 31:20walk by Martin, the steal, set up the run, and
- 31:23Decker kites him in. Here's Williams at bat.
- 31:29He hits .333 on the air, and he has three home
- 31:34runs and six runs batted in. Takes the curve
- 31:36ball high, one ball, no strike. With Bill Williams
- 31:39off to a good start, he has seven hits. He had
- 31:4221 trips to the plate. Chicago leading one to
- 31:49nothing as we play on the top of the third inning.
- 31:52Sandy Vance checks, delivers to Williams. Half
- 31:55swing, and it's in there. Kick the bat. One ball,
- 31:57one strike. Williams tried to check his swing,
- 32:00had the ball at the bat. Billy had the greatest
- 32:04year of his career last year. He hit 322, had
- 32:1142 home runs, and 129 runs batted in. change
- 32:16up low blocked by Sudeikis and no play. Two and
- 32:19one to count. Williams is very close in the National
- 32:24League voting for most valuable player won by
- 32:27Johnny Bench. He did a lot of things well last
- 32:31year. He had a great season. Two and one. Now
- 32:36the pitch. High and away. Ball free. Three and
- 32:39one. He led the league in runs scored total bases
- 32:43tied for the most tips. and a second in the league
- 32:45and runs batted in on home runs. His batting
- 32:50average is fourth in the league. Three and one
- 32:54count. Pitch time is in for strike three and
- 32:58two. So with two out, Becker at first base ready
- 33:01to go on the next pitch. Williams now has 294
- 33:14lifetime home runs. Now the 3 -2 pitch. Swung
- 33:20on a fly ball into shallow center. That's going
- 33:22to be trouble. Will's going out, can't get it,
- 33:24drops in for a base hit. Will quickly brings
- 33:26it back in, holding a third base with Beckham
- 33:28on a brute single by Williams. So a couple little
- 33:31fly balls have fallen in the outfield for Chicago,
- 33:34and the Cubs now have runners on at first and
- 33:36third, and Ron Sando coming up. Williams sounded
- 33:40like he broke his fan on that one. hit it off
- 33:42the end of the stick and blew it just over Will's
- 33:44head in the center field. Sando coming up. He
- 33:49walked his first time up. So the walk in the
- 33:52inning to open it up to Martin has put Sandy
- 33:55Vance in some trouble. The walk has been cashed
- 33:58in for a run. And now the Cubs have runners at
- 34:01first and third with two outs. Sando up. He has
- 34:06just one RBI so far on the year. Ron hit 267
- 34:10last year and had 26 home runs. Vance Reddy delivers.
- 34:15Fast ball high. One ball and no strikes. Saddle
- 34:19came to the Cubs first in 1960. Four times in
- 34:26his career, he has driven over 100 runs. 114
- 34:30last year and 123 the year before. 1 -0 to count
- 34:34to number 10, the Cubs captain Ron Santo. Fastball
- 34:38inside, ball 2, and it's 2 balls and no strikes.
- 34:53Santo leading 2 -0. Runners on at first and third
- 34:56for Chicago. We're in the third inning. Fans
- 34:58ready. The look and the pitch. Ground ball toward
- 35:01second. The Fever has it, plays it to Wills,
- 35:03but the force there in the inning is over. So
- 35:08they're all out in the third, one run, two hits,
- 35:11and two left. The score at the end of two of
- 35:13the happenings, Cubs won, Dodgers nothing. Hello,

- 35:45you want to order a phone, move a phone, or check
- 35:48your telephone bill, just call your Pacific Telephone
- 35:52Business Office and ask for your service representative.
- 35:55She is specially trained to have or find the
- 35:58answers to your questions. Happy birthday to
- 36:19the Dodgers first lady, Mrs. Kay O'Malley. Celebrating
- 36:23a happy birthday today and hoping that the Dodgers
- 36:25can give her a happy birthday present of victory
- 36:27over the Cubs. Here's Steve Garvey coming on.
- 36:31So from all of us, a happy birthday also. Steve
- 36:37Garvey is batting 2 -11 facing Kenny Holtzman.
- 36:47with checking signs and catch your mark into
- 36:50the windup for the pitch on the way. Garvey takes
- 36:52the curve low for the ball. The Dodgers have
- 36:54a team batting average of 260. But have managed
- 37:02to win just two and lose four, rather than giving
- 37:05up quite a few runs. The swing is a high fly
- 37:09foul off to the right out of play. The Dodgers
- 37:12have scored 24 runs. They have allowed 24 runs.
- 37:15But they have 52 hits to the opposition's 35.
- 37:21The Cubs, meanwhile, have a team batting average
- 37:23of only 221. They have scored only 19 runs in
- 37:2916. Garvey takes low ball 2 and it's 2 and 1.
- 37:392 -1 count holds from checking Garvey waiting.
- 37:44Look at the high fly ball to deep right field.
- 37:47Callison going way back for this one. Going,
- 37:49going. It's gone. Home run. Steve Garvey is pretty
- 38:09strong to get that ball to right field. Right
- 38:11hand batter. It hit between the 3 .50 and 3 .70
- 38:14mark into the bleachers and the Dodgers have
- 38:16caught up 1 -1 on Garvey's second home run of
- 38:19the year. All spring Garvey was going to right
- 38:22field with good power and then he was pulled
- 38:23on occasion. And now he opens up this ballgame
- 38:27for the Dodgers with a home run in the right
- 38:28field seat. He's by what turned out to be a real
- 38:32strong one for the Dodgers. Bill Russell waiting.
- 38:38Ball one count to pitch to Bill. Popped foul
- 38:40out of play on the count of 1 -1. Russell batting
- 38:42in the eighth spot. For the home run with Steve
- 38:45Garvey, we're pleased to present two books of
- 38:47union a lot of strips to Steve and two books
- 38:50to the San Fernando Valley Association for Retarded
- 38:53Children in Sepulveda. One -on -one the count
- 38:57to Bill Russell. Holtzman delivers. Up high with
- 39:01a breaking ball, two and one. Holtzman's record
- 39:05on the air, 0 -1 -1. He worked four and two -thirds
- 39:08innings in his other appearance in the last six
- 39:10runs. This is the first home run that he has
- 39:14allowed to be here. The swing of the drive, the
- 39:16deep center field, fading back a little bit as
- 39:18Orte's turn makes the catch for the off. So Rosalaba
- 39:21on a line drive at the center, and that'll bring
- 39:23up Sandy Vance. Sandy Vance coming up now. Advance
- 39:46the batter. Holtzman checking. Advance the right
- 39:53-hander all the way. A swing and a miss and a
- 39:56fastball. Strike one. Steve Garveau, home run,
- 40:01opening up the last half of the third and he
- 40:02hit it to right field. Now the pitch on the way
- 40:07to advance. Home run and a miss. Strike two,
- 40:09oh and two. Garveau has five hits on the year.
- 40:11Two of them doubles and two home runs, but he
- 40:14has only one single so far. Here's the 2 -0 -0
- 40:19-2 pitch, and Vance takes high on the way, ball
- 40:21one, one and two. The Dodgers might come up with
- 40:25some pretty good power. And fellows like Garvey,
- 40:29of course, Grabarca with mid -18 last year, Sudeikis,
- 40:33and Richie Allen pitch high for ball two -two.
- 40:39That's the first Dodger team home run. The Cubs
- 40:41have hit only four home runs. And they have long
- 40:45been noted as one of the top home run hitting
- 40:46teams in the league. Here's the 2 -2 pitch to
- 40:49Vance. Brown ball to shortstop. Kessinger has
- 40:53it. Here's his throw. It's in time. 2 -0. Vance
- 40:57rolls to short. Maury Wills coming up. Maury
- 40:59struck out his first time at bat. Maury Wills.
- 41:09Will's hitting 2 -17. On the scoreboard today,
- 41:23Pittsburgh beats Philadelphia 4 -3. Cincinnati
- 41:27over Atlanta 7 -3. McLaughlin the winner and
- 41:30Reed the loser. Pitch to Will's a ball. One ball,
- 41:33no strikes. And St. Louis is leading Houston
- 41:37by a score of 5 -4. in the ninth inning in Houston.
- 41:42Rather than say it was a bunt, first base wave,
- 41:44Pepitone comes to field it, first pace is open,
- 41:46and Wills beats it out, no close. So Wills putted,
- 41:53and Pepitone had to come off the bag to play
- 41:55it, but that time Holton was late getting over
- 41:57there, and Wills beats out the bunt for a base
- 41:59pass. That'll bring up Manny Moda, he's grounded
- 42:03out to Pepitone his first time up. So the Reds
- 42:09have won their first game of the year. They now
- 42:10stand 1 -4. And San Francisco beats San Diego
- 42:205 -0. And the Giants have moved into the top
- 42:24spot now. Tied ahead of Atlanta. Moda takes low
- 42:31and inside. Ball in. Atlanta losing tonight.
- 42:34Now it's 4 -2. The Giants are 5 -2. Houston five
- 42:38and two and losing tonight. San Diego three and
- 42:42four and the Dodgers two and four and the Reds
- 42:43are one and four. One ball, no strike. Molder
- 42:49waiting, Will going. Ground ball to our second.
- 42:52Here's the play to first and the inning is over.
- 42:55The Molder grounds out. The Dodgers go down with
- 42:57one run on two hits and leave one on the score
- 43:00at the end of three. Dodgers one and the Cubs
- 43:03have one. Super 76, sir? Yeah, please. You know
- 43:11the trouble today, Marge. People have no pride
- 43:14in their work. No spirit. Nobody really knows
- 43:16his job anymore. Now take this guy. No, don't
- 43:19worry. I want to ask you something. Yes, sir?
- 43:21Would you happen to have any idea why they call
- 43:23this gasoline Super 76? Well, sir, wouldn't you
- 43:26say a gasoline with five engine cleaners to keep
- 43:28your engine, carburetor, and anti -pollution
- 43:30valve clean is pretty super? Don't say a word,
- 43:33Marge. Not a word. Union Oil thinks a clean engine
- 43:39is pretty important. That's why you'll find five
- 43:41engine cleaners in Super 76, Union Oil's premium
- 43:44gasoline. Because a cleaner engine runs better,
- 43:47and it helps reduce pollution. Well, there's
- 43:50a man who certainly has the spirit. No, he's
- 43:52just the exception that proves the rule. George,
- 43:54I could almost think you had trouble admitting
- 43:56when you're wrong. The spirit of 76 lives at
- 43:59Union Oil. Three to two, scoring twice in the
- 44:03eighth inning. Oakland over Milwaukee, five to
- 44:06nothing. Minnesota beat Kansas City 2 -0 and
- 44:09Boston over Washington 10 -7. So that's everything
- 44:12on the scoreboard. We're set to go into the fourth
- 44:14inning of the ballgame now. Cubs coming back
- 44:16to play here at Smith. All right, Gary, a run,
- 44:18two hits for each side. A difference in the ballgame.
- 44:21A couple of bloop singles to set over the run
- 44:23for the Cubs. And a line drive home run to the
- 44:26opposite field by Steve Garvey to get the Dodgers
- 44:28even. So here's Pepitone, Callison, and Ortiz
- 44:31in that order. Pepitone left -hand -mitting first
- 44:34baseman batting 3 -0 -4. Sandy Vans into the
- 44:40wind -up and the pitch to Pepitone, a change
- 44:42outside ball one. We told this story once this
- 44:44spring. We won't repeat it again, but it is a
- 44:47tip -off on what kind of a character Pepitone
- 44:49is. It came out after last season. The fact that
- 44:54he kept begging Leo de Rocher to let him steal
- 44:57a base. Please let me steal a base. Leo de Rocher
- 45:00said no. Here's the 1 -0 pitch. High ball 2,
- 45:042 -0. And then one day, Leo Derochev blasted
- 45:07the sign to Joey Amalfitano, left Pepitone sealed.
- 45:10Well, the sign was for Amalfitano, the coach,
- 45:14to wink at Pepitone. So Joe took his lead, and
- 45:17Amalfitano winked, and Pepitone never moved.
- 45:20The 2 -0 pitch is popped in the air. Will's waiting,
- 45:24100 now, and makes the catch, one away. Anyway,
- 45:28just to conclude the story, Amalfitano winked,
- 45:31and Pepitone didn't move. So Leo gave the steel
- 45:35sign again and Amalfitana winked and Pepitone
- 45:39never moved and finally Leo got a little angry
- 45:42and flashed the sign again and for the third
- 45:44time Amalfitana winked and this time Pepitone
- 45:47blew him a kiss. That's Joe Pepitone. Here's
- 45:53Johnny Callison and lines have fouled into the
- 45:56lower deck in right field 0 and 1 to count. Callison
- 46:03hit into a force play in the second inning. Johnny
- 46:09has three home runs against the Dodgers last
- 46:12year. He bunts up along the third baseline. Garvey
- 46:15in a hurry and guns him out and oh what a dangerous
- 46:18play for Wes Parker. Parker had to actually go
- 46:23into the runner to handle a throw. and came within
- 46:26a whisker of one of those head -on collisions.
- 46:29That's a rare time you'll see Parker get in a
- 46:31jam like that. West normally is able to get to
- 46:35the bag and catch that throw in foul ground with
- 46:38his foot on the bag, but that time he almost
- 46:40went right head -on into Callison. So Parker
- 46:43and Callison are each fortunate that they escaped
- 46:46a serious collision that time, two down, and
- 46:49the batter is Jose Ortiz. Ortiz hit into a fourth
- 46:56play in the second inning. Change over, first
- 47:00right on one. Final score, the Cardinals beat
- 47:04Houston 5 -4, Steve Carlton over Wade Blasingame.
- 47:07Don't forget, the Cardinals will be in here Wednesday
- 47:09night. Change over, first right on one. Final
- 47:24score, the Cardinals beat Houston 5 -4, Steve
- 47:27Carlin over Wade Lashinge. Don't forget the Cardinals
- 47:29will be in here Wednesday night. Here's the strike
- 47:34one pitch to Ortiz. Breaking ball in the dirt,
- 47:36backhanded by Sudeikis in the count 1 -1. 1 -1,
- 47:43that's the count, that's the score. With two
- 47:45out in the fourth inning and the bases empty.
- 47:47Sandy Vance and Kenny Holtzman. Now the 1 -1
- 47:52pitch on the way. Breaking ball low, ball two,
- 47:55two and one. Ortiz, as we mentioned, is first
- 47:59trip very fast. You can run to first base in
- 48:05under four seconds. You fly, and he has been
- 48:08timed at three -nine. So he puts heat on the
- 48:11infield. Two -one pitch to Jose. Ground ball
- 48:14sharply to Wills. He's up with it, goes to first,
- 48:17and that's that. One of the incredible things
- 48:20about baseball, no matter how fast the man is,
- 48:23there's no way you can out -leg a ground ball
- 48:25that should add an infielder. So they've got
- 48:27an order in the fourth, and at the end of three
- 48:29and a half, a one -one tie. Flip. Milwaukee and
- 48:32the world. When you get caught in the eye of
- 48:45a nor 'easter, it can be a pretty hairy thing.
- 48:48Wings whip up to a hundred and thirty miles an
- 48:50hour and can crack open the hull of a ship like
- 48:52an egg. And the waves, the waves are the worst.
- 48:56They wash over the deck and can sweep everything
- 48:58overboard, but it can happen down, including
- 49:01you. But the worst goes on. If you happen to
- 49:04be caught topside, you will fall right, but survive
- 49:07it. So you put on your life jacket and hang on
- 49:10and sweat it out till the storm blows over. Then
- 49:14you celebrate with a slip. Listen, life's a one
- 49:18-time thing. Nobody gets a second chance. So
- 49:21you'll live it with all but gusto in your mouth,
- 49:23right down to the beer you drink. Why settle
- 49:26for less? When you're out of Schlitz, you're
- 49:29out of beer. Bottom of the fourth inning, a 1
- 49:38-1 tie. A reminder to our listeners, 19 or younger
- 49:41especially, don't forget Friday night is your
- 49:43night at Dodger Stadium, the first of two team
- 49:46nights this year. Team night tickets for only
- 49:49one dollar and you get a 250 reserve seat. You'll
- 49:52find team night booths in both sides of the stadium
- 49:54and if you have some adults with you they can
- 49:56purchase their 250 seats and sit right next to
- 49:58you. So make team night your date night at Dodger
- 50:01Stadium this Friday night. Team night tickets
- 50:04only one dollar. Curveball has hit the right
- 50:07center, but Ortiz is there to make the catch.
- 50:10So Parker goes out, one away. The Beeson Prize
- 50:12is given out. We'll also have Jerry Ray in the
- 50:14Blue Forest Friday night. So if the kids in the
- 50:20neighborhood are saying, hey, babe, what's happening?
- 50:23You tell them, team night at Dodger Stadium Friday
- 50:25night, right on, right here. Here's Richie Allen.
- 50:34Ritchie grounded a third in the second inning.
- 50:36Holtzman's fastball is fouled back in the count
- 50:38on one. 0 -1 to Ritchie. Bill Sudeikis on deck.
- 50:51Now there's strike two pitch on the way. A high
- 50:54fly ball into deep center field. Back for Ortiz.
- 50:57A way back. It's gone. Welcome to the club, Ritchie.
- 51:36and the Dodgers lead two to one, so they could
- 51:39save five, ball one. Allen hit a towering drive.
- 51:43It looked like a marble going out over the center
- 51:45field fence. He got a standing ovation from the
- 51:48crowd, and as he walked along the path to the
- 51:51Dodger dugout, you can tell he was thinking about
- 51:53it because ballplayers are very sensitive as
- 51:55to what to do to an ovation. And he finally decided
- 51:58he should acknowledge it, and he took his helmet
- 52:00off. And then he got a standing ovation in the
- 52:02dugout from the Dodgers, and Wes Parker pulled
- 52:04him into the crowd. and he indeed has now been
- 52:07welcomed officially to the ball club not that
- 52:10he wasn't a member anyway but he has proven his
- 52:13point so the Dodgers lead two to one and he shook
- 52:15them up oh did he hit that thing and actually
- 52:18he hit under the ball the two -oh pitch to Sudsy
- 52:22a one hopper banged at Kessinger Don stays with
- 52:25it to get him two out and they're hitting a few
- 52:27darts against left -hander Kenny Holtzman on
- 52:31the home run by Richie Allen two books of union
- 52:34all -autoscript to Richie and two books of the
- 52:36Pacific Lodge Boys Home Incorporated, 4900 Cerrania
- 52:40Avenue in Woodland Hill. Listen to the crowd
- 52:43talking. Boy, I tell you one thing, this ball
- 52:52club is going to have people talking. Whether
- 52:54they win or not, nobody knows that. But we were
- 52:56saying this earlier, as far as coming out and
- 52:59investing some money and having some fun, they
- 53:02are a particularly good investment this year.
- 53:05Awful. But Fever takes the strike on one. Two
- 53:10to one Dodgers in the fourth inning. Postman
- 53:12comes back. Curved ball and a beauty over strike
- 53:15two. Richie Allen has his 212 home runs in eight
- 53:21years plus. He starts this year with a lifetime
- 53:24batting average of 297. Now the strike two pitch
- 53:31on the way. Fast ball away. Ball one. One and
- 53:33two. A fellow who hit home runs that high, and
- 53:37you don't see them go out that far that high,
- 53:40but that was an old Ralph Keiner type home run.
- 53:43Because when you hit it that high, you figure
- 53:44it can't possibly go too far. The one -two curve
- 53:48is whacked down the line foul. If you know Dodger
- 53:53Stadium at all, you know in center field you
- 53:55have two flag poles. And it's 400 just at the
- 53:58curve on either side of the center fielder. Well
- 54:01the ball went out between the flag poles. Closer
- 54:04to the one in left center. With Ortiz up against
- 54:10the board watching it go out. Here's the one
- 54:13-two pitch to Jimmy LaFever. Fastball hit down
- 54:16to Kessinger. He's busy tonight. Don up with
- 54:18it to get him. And the Dodgers are gone, but
- 54:20not before they get on the board. On the towering
- 54:23home run by Allen. A run on a hit. And at the
- 54:25end of the four, Dodgers two, Cubs one. Farmer
- 54:29John says that every home should have an on -deck
- 54:32circle, like a spot in your refrigerator, for
- 54:34a package of his Farmer John wieners. That way,
- 54:37they're always handy when you want to whip up
- 54:39an easy, enjoyable meal. A delicious idea it
- 54:42is, too, since Farmer John wieners have a wondrous,
- 54:45wide -open space and Western flavor you can hardly
- 54:47believe. The secret is in the smoking. Farmer
- 54:50John smokes his wieners like he smokes his famous
- 54:53bacon, over real smoke from native Western wood.
- 54:56And Farmer John wieners are as hearty and wholesome
- 54:59as they are delicious because they're all meat
- 55:01and the best meat too. Be sure to pick up a package
- 55:04of Farmer John wieners in the delicatessen section
- 55:07of your market. And look, the Farmer John Dodger
- 55:10dogs in the meat department. They're the long,
- 55:12luscious 10 -inch wieners sold at the ballpark.
- 55:14Except for size, Farmer John wieners and Farmer
- 55:17John Dodger dogs are the same. Both won gold
- 55:20medals at the California State Fair, and both
- 55:22would fit nicely in that on -deck circle of your
- 55:25refrigerator. Through four innings, the Dodgers
- 55:30two runs, three hits, and no errors. The Cubs
- 55:32one run, two hits, and no errors. Sandy Vance
- 55:35and Kenny Hoffman. Sandy Vance has not done too
- 55:40much pitching for the Dodgers this spring. Vance
- 55:45had a brief stint. against the Angels. So the
- 55:54Dodger, of course, will have to watch him. He
- 55:56went five innings against the Angels in a Dodger
- 56:00Sunday victory against California. Ground ball
- 56:03to Parker. West to the bag for the out. One away
- 56:05as far as J .C. Martin is concerned. And in a
- 56:08moment, Kenny Holtzman coming up. So when Othello
- 56:12has not pitched too long in any one ballgame,
- 56:14you immediately check his... high point or the
- 56:17most innings and when he gets to that point you
- 56:20figure from then on he bears watching well his
- 56:23longest stint five and he's working his fifth
- 56:25inning right now however to look back at the
- 56:31box and your scorecard if you are keeping score
- 56:34you'll notice all the ground balls off the bats
- 56:36of the Cubs so so far Vance has been able to
- 56:40keep the ball down and he's leading two to one
- 56:43it's not quite as simple as that but It sure
- 56:46is an indication. Holtzman, a pretty good hitting
- 56:49pitcher, takes a breaking ball for a strike on
- 56:51one. Kenny, left -hand pitcher, right -hand batter.
- 56:58On deck, Don Kessinger. Vance comes back, fastball,
- 57:02over at the knees, strike two, 0 -2. Yeah, this
- 57:06fella could be a pitcher. Oh boy, you hear the
- 57:08experts, the pitching coaches, and the scouts
- 57:11talk about him. And everyone's really know. Strike
- 57:15two pitch on the way to Holtzman. Fastball in
- 57:17the dirt. Ball one. One and two. It's hard to
- 57:25keep the ball down. You hear somebody say, well,
- 57:27all Vance has to do is keep the ball down. First
- 57:30of all, not only that, but it's hard to keep
- 57:32it down. The breaking ball is low. Ball two.
- 57:34What happens is, as they pitch your tires...
- 57:38He no longer takes that good stride, no longer
- 57:41bends his back the same way, no longer releases
- 57:44late, and then the pitch starts to come up. The
- 57:48two two -pitch swung on and missed by three.
- 57:50And in the big league, when the pitch starts
- 57:53to come up, the pitcher usually goes out. If
- 57:57you were raised the same way I was, all you ever
- 57:59heard of when you were a kid about the high hard
- 58:01one? Well, the high hard one is all right if
- 58:05you have a a Bob Gibson fastball, or if you throw
- 58:08like Kovacs used to throw, or even a Mara shot,
- 58:11but there aren't too many around. And the ordinary
- 58:15human being type high fastball is going to be
- 58:17hit a mile. Here's Kessinger with two out. He's
- 58:22grounded out and struck out. Good ballplayers.
- 58:25Switch hitting shortstop, takes low ball one.
- 58:33Two runs, three hits for the Dodgers. Danny Ozark
- 58:36bringing up Bill Russell in center field just
- 58:38a dab Now moving them over a little left center
- 58:42and there's a ground ball hit to Lafever Frenchy
- 58:44has it and flips to Parker and there you have
- 58:46it again Vance keeps it down the Cubs hit ground
- 58:48ball and they go out in order and at the end
- 58:51of four and a half innings the Dodgers two and
- 58:53the Cubs one This is Joe McConnell for Flack

- 1:00:42ball game. Where else would a banker sit but
- 1:00:46in the Chairman of the Board's box? Mr. Stengel,
- 1:00:49sir, we are happy to have you with us. Indeed.
- 1:00:54And I hope you'll lower your interest rates.
- 1:00:57Thank you. Two to one Dodgers. One and one, the
- 1:01:01count is Steve Garvey as we salute Casey. The
- 1:01:03left -handed man from Kansas. There's a line
- 1:01:05drive to left center. Ortiz over, makes the running
- 1:01:08catch for the out. So Jose Ortiz handles a line
- 1:01:12drive off the bat of Garvey. One away. That'll
- 1:01:16bring up Bill Russell at center field. Bill Russell
- 1:01:25hit the ball hard, but lined out to Ortiz in
- 1:01:28the third inning. Jose has handle three out there.
- 1:01:35Pulseman ready and delivers and the fastball
- 1:01:37foul back. Good pitch, he jammed him and Russell
- 1:01:39never did get a round on it. 4 -1. The lion arm
- 1:01:47folded at his chest, pacing up and down in the
- 1:01:50cup dugout. Submission number two on his back.
- 1:01:54Strike one pitch to Russell, off speed, long
- 1:01:57on and missed. Strike two. Kenny Holtzman, a
- 1:01:5917 -game winner in each of the last two years.
- 1:02:03The crowd reacting as Martin Crowe sailed over
- 1:02:05Holtzman's head. Oh, and to the count. The Cubs
- 1:02:11have Kenny Holtzman and J .C. Martin, the infield
- 1:02:14of Joel Pepitone and Glenn Becker, Don Kessinger
- 1:02:17and Ron Santo, the outfield of Billy Williams
- 1:02:20in left, Jose Ortiz in center, and Johnny Callison
- 1:02:23in right. Jim Gilliam coaching at first, Denny
- 1:02:26Ozark at third. Spike two pitch, pass ball away.
- 1:02:30Ball one, one and two. Holtzman into the windup
- 1:02:40and the one, two pitch. Breaking ball hit up
- 1:02:43along third base, charging saddle. Bare hand
- 1:02:45pick up, no throw. Russell's too fast for that
- 1:02:49play and gets a leg single. So one of the inequities
- 1:02:56of baseball Where you hit a line drive at somebody
- 1:03:00and then you nub one for a base hit and the ball
- 1:03:03players keep their Sanity as do the managers
- 1:03:05throughout the year by saying it all evens out
- 1:03:08And here is Sandy Vance Vance grounded is short
- 1:03:13in the third inning with the Cubs thinking he'll
- 1:03:15be bunting to stay out of the double play to
- 1:03:17get the speedy Russell in Scoring position and
- 1:03:20leave it up to will we'll see what Sandy does
- 1:03:23postman at the belt Vance bunting, but takes,
- 1:03:26and a pitch outside, and Russell has stolen seconds.
- 1:03:36Kenny Holtzman gesturing to Harvey, didn't he
- 1:03:38try to bunt? And Doug said, no sir, he pulled
- 1:03:40the bat back, he took it. Leo now gestures, didn't
- 1:03:43he bunt? And Gorman shakes his head, no, he pulled
- 1:03:46the bat back. And they count one ball and no
- 1:03:48strikes, and Bill Russell steals second. Russell
- 1:03:52led the club in stolen bases in the spring. That's
- 1:03:55his second steal of the year, two out of three.
- 1:04:00Now Vance up there and the Cubs with a runner
- 1:04:04at second have to come back. They pull Pepitone
- 1:04:07at the bag in the same percent of a third. The
- 1:04:10outfield's shallow and shaded to right. The 1
- 1:04:13-0 pitch to Vance taken for a strike. One and
- 1:04:18one. Vance right hand batter. Polkman at the
- 1:04:33belt. 1 -1 pitch. A fastball hit foul outside
- 1:04:36of first. He was late on it, but almost got away
- 1:04:38with it. It is just off the bag. Vance prior
- 1:04:46to tonight has had 37 at bats in the big leagues
- 1:04:51and seven hits. Two runs batted in. On the count
- 1:04:57one and two. Swing styles another fastballer
- 1:05:03first into the crowd, back of the club dugout.
- 1:05:06One ball and two strikes to count. Gonna be with
- 1:05:10us tomorrow night, I hope so. Bill Singer will
- 1:05:12try to find the strike zone and try to find a
- 1:05:15victory. Opposing him will be Milt Pappas, one
- 1:05:19of the control pitchers in the league, who had
- 1:05:22a shutout his last time out. Here's the one -two
- 1:05:25pitch to Vance, outside and high, ball two. Milt
- 1:05:29Pappas last year. on average two walks a game.
- 1:05:33He was number seven in the rankings in control.
- 1:05:37So we'll see him tomorrow night. And Bill Singer
- 1:05:39opposing him and we hope he can be with us. Here's
- 1:05:42a 2 -2 pitch. Fast ball. Popped in the air. Back
- 1:05:44at third. Sando in foul ground. Waiting now.
- 1:05:48Makes the cast of the hour. So the Dodgers accomplish
- 1:05:51what they had hoped. They got a man over second
- 1:05:53base. Stayed out of the double play and here's
- 1:05:55Will. Moore he struck out in the first inning
- 1:06:02and had a perfect bunch single in the third.
- 1:06:07He's one for two. Holtman leading Martin behind
- 1:06:24the plate. Outfield fanned out straight away.
- 1:06:26Ken delivers in a pitch very high, ball one.
- 1:06:34You never know how they did against each other,
- 1:06:39but you can always look back through the books
- 1:06:40and figure out how Wills did, let's say, against
- 1:06:43Cub Pitching last year, if nothing else. He hits
- 1:06:47a high foul off third, and Sando has a play.
- 1:06:51He's waiting and makes the catch for the out.
- 1:06:54For your information, Wills hits. 346 against
- 1:07:00Chicago last year. No runs ahead, a man left
- 1:07:02at second, and at the end the five. Dodgers two
- 1:07:05comes one. For friends to be good at anything,
- 1:07:08I mean really good, you usually find it takes
- 1:07:10two things. It takes training and spirit. And
- 1:07:13there's a fellow in your neighborhood who has
- 1:07:15the best of both. Your Union 76 certified service
- 1:07:18man. He's a real pro with real professional training.
- 1:07:21Because for each certified service fight he wears
- 1:07:24on his arm... He's had special training at Union
- 1:07:26Certified Service Training School. After six
- 1:07:29weeks of concentrated specialized study for each
- 1:07:32stripe he wears. And that means when you take
- 1:07:34your car to him, he's going to fix it right.
- 1:07:36Look for the stripes he wears. Brakes, wheel
- 1:07:39alignment, tune -ups, air conditioning. If he's
- 1:07:42wearing the stripe, you know he's a pro. And
- 1:07:44he has great spirit, too. He's proud of the job
- 1:07:46he can do, and you can trust him to do it right.
- 1:07:49Because that's what Union Certified Service is
- 1:07:51all about. So the next time your car needs servicing,
- 1:07:55take it to your Union 76 certified serviceman.
- 1:07:58You'll like his spirit. The spirit of 76 lives
- 1:08:01at Union Oil. Don't forget, with this homestand
- 1:08:11coming up, the Cubs tomorrow night, then the
- 1:08:13Cardinals and the Astros. And if you'd like to
- 1:08:16go to the ball game in a group, well the best
- 1:08:18way to do that then is contact group sales. Care
- 1:08:21of the Dodgers, Box 100, Los Angeles 90051. That's
- 1:08:26always a good way to go with a group from your
- 1:08:27church, your office, neighborhood. Whatever,
- 1:08:32we sure hope you'll make Dodger Stadium a place
- 1:08:33to have some fun. And we think the ball club
- 1:08:35is here to provide the fun. So come on out. Open
- 1:08:40for business tomorrow night and every night this
- 1:08:42week. through Sunday. Then the Dodgers will go
- 1:08:45out on the road and they will first stop in San
- 1:08:47Diego and see if that machine has cooled off
- 1:08:50a little bit. While we are away, you might want
- 1:08:54to line up the month of May because the Dodgers
- 1:08:56will be home for quite a bit. And in May, you
- 1:09:01will see the Cincinnati Reds, the Pittsburgh
- 1:09:03Pirates, the Atlanta Braves, the San Francisco
- 1:09:05Giants. In other words, May is going to be something.
- 1:09:09So why not take a look at the schedule, pick
- 1:09:11out the ball games that you'd like to see, and
- 1:09:13drop it to line here at the ballpark. Or pick
- 1:09:16up your tickets at any convenience and dodge
- 1:09:18your ticket off it. Sixth inning, two to one
- 1:09:20dodges, and Glenn Becker takes low ball one,
- 1:09:23one and oh. Now the one oh pitch is the second
- 1:09:34baseman to strike in account one and one. Glenn
- 1:09:39Becker, rounded to short, got the fly ball single
- 1:09:42to right. One -one pitch on the way. Line drive
- 1:09:49to center, Russell coming up and makes the catch
- 1:09:51for the out. That line drive hung and he got
- 1:09:53it out of his chest. One away. Well, Becker can't
- 1:09:57consider himself too unlucky, however, since
- 1:09:59he got the base hit on the pop fly and the run
- 1:10:02batted in. Here's Billy Williams. Billy has popped
- 1:10:09up in single, he's one for two. Vance into the
- 1:10:20windup and delivers. Ground ball, the first base,
- 1:10:22Parker up with it, goes to the bag, two down.
- 1:10:27Well, Sandy Vance has two out in the sixth inning,
- 1:10:30leading two to one. And he was just down right
- 1:10:33on lucky in the third inning on the pop fly to
- 1:10:36sell, He would not have allowed a run. He's allowed
- 1:10:39two hits. Here's Santel, the third baseman, who
- 1:10:42walked and hit into a fourth play. Of course,
- 1:10:45on the other side of the coin about Vance, and
- 1:10:47any pitcher would do this, and certainly a manager
- 1:10:50would remind him of it, he got himself into trouble
- 1:10:53and allowed the only run in the third when he
- 1:10:55walked the number eight hitter in the lineup,
- 1:10:57Patrick Martin. Breaking ball for a strike on
- 1:11:01one. Just as I'm sure Don Sutton would be the
- 1:11:04first to tell you that all of his troubles yesterday
- 1:11:06began when he walked Tommy Dean, the one fellow
- 1:11:10who doesn't figure to hurt you really in the
- 1:11:11San Diego lineup, certainly not on all runs.
- 1:11:14And he walked him and then the sky fell in. Santa
- 1:11:17was fixed inside. He almost jammed himself that
- 1:11:20time. He was guessing on location and he was
- 1:11:22looking for a pitch away. One and one. Vance
- 1:11:34into the windup. Now the 1 -1 pitch on the way
- 1:11:37as the fastball hits foul off to the right of
- 1:11:40the plate and out of play. Head ball kangaroos
- 1:11:45all the way up into the second deck. I told you
- 1:11:48this was a lively ballpark in the count one and
- 1:11:50two. Two down, six innings, Dodgers two, Cubs
- 1:11:58one. Vance has a look that sheds these signs
- 1:12:02behind the plate. Now the 1 -2 pitch to the Cubs
- 1:12:06third baseman is set up along third base foul
- 1:12:08out of play. Good off -season pitch by Vance,
- 1:12:11and it's still 1 -2. There's a thoughtful note
- 1:12:17by the Chicago Cubs. You always hear, of course,
- 1:12:20about all of the fine ballplayers in the big
- 1:12:22leagues who have come from USC. But also UCLA
- 1:12:25is pretty well represented in the big leagues,
- 1:12:27and the Cubs have a brewing on their club. The
- 1:12:301 -2 pitch to Santo filed away. Seated out in
- 1:12:33the Chicago bullpen is the young right -hander
- 1:12:36by the name of Bill Bonham, B -O -N -H -A -M.
- 1:12:40And knowing he was from UCLA, when they issued
- 1:12:44him his uniform, they gave him uniform number
- 1:12:4833. Now, if you're a college basketball follower
- 1:12:52or a UCLA fan, you know about 33. Change is over!
- 1:12:56Strike three called, and Santo can't believe
- 1:12:59it. And he's caught looking. In case you are
- 1:13:03not a basketball follower, they gave Bonham number
- 1:13:0533 because he's from UCLA. That was the number
- 1:13:09worn at UCLA and now worn in Milwaukee by Louis
- 1:13:12Alcindor. The Cubs are gone and ordered. At the
- 1:13:15end of five and a half, the Dodgers two, the
- 1:13:17Cubs one. was a seafaring man. He used to sail
- 1:13:35these seas like there was no tomorrow. And he
- 1:13:37drank his beer big. Even back then, it was short.
- 1:13:45Hear the philosophy about life, my old man. He'd
- 1:13:50say, you only live once, so you gotta make the
- 1:13:52most of it. Yeah, a lot of that stuck with me.
- 1:14:00You gotta live life. with all the rest over the
- 1:14:04rim. In everything, even the beer you drink.
- 1:14:08Some of the less, you're out of shape. When you're
- 1:14:11out of shit, you're out of beer. Bottom of the
- 1:14:21sixth inning, the Dodgers leading the Cubs 2
- 1:14:23-1. So far, a great performance by Sandy Vance
- 1:14:28and a magnificent change -up for the third call
- 1:14:31strike on Ron Santota in the top of the sixth.
- 1:14:33That was some fix. Here's Moda, grounded out
- 1:14:37twice. Manny is 0 for 2, as usual, going the
- 1:14:39other way. Grounded the second and the first.
- 1:14:42Holtzman breaking ball to site. Might be a little
- 1:14:47tip -off on Sandy Vance in looking at last year.
- 1:14:51He made four stars, four. against the San Francisco
- 1:14:56Giants. Strike one -fifth, fastball high and
- 1:15:00away, one and one. Well, on the message board,
- 1:15:05Dodger Stadium, welcome to one of the nicer human
- 1:15:08beings you'll ever meet. And he is the head coach
- 1:15:11of the Los Angeles Lakers, the pride of the cross,
- 1:15:14Holy Cross, Joe Mulaney. And this is good luck,
- 1:15:17Joe. He is something. The pitch high ball too,
- 1:15:19two and one. I don't know if he remembers We
- 1:15:23went body surfing and saw Rockaway many, many
- 1:15:27years ago. And he's a distinguished coach to
- 1:15:30the Lakers and whatever happened to the redhead.
- 1:15:34There's a 2 -1 pitch to Moda. Fastball slice
- 1:15:38to right field, but that's where Callison hangs
- 1:15:40out and John makes the catch. Wally. Wes Parker
- 1:15:47lined out to Glenn Beckert and lined out to Ortiz
- 1:15:51in center field. Parker, more than any other
- 1:15:57Dodgers, has really hit in tough luck. Most of
- 1:16:00the others have just not done too well. And meanwhile,
- 1:16:03while I'm saying that, he came into this game
- 1:16:04hitting 304, but he could be hitting close to
- 1:16:07500. Pitch outside, ball one. He has hit a bucket
- 1:16:12full of line drives that have been caught at
- 1:16:13people. He's 7 for 23. He could, really, he could
- 1:16:19be 12 for 23. Pitch over for a strike, one and
- 1:16:23one. On deck, Richie Allen. One out on the sixth,
- 1:16:31Dodgers two, Cubs one. Polkman and Vance, Lamar
- 1:16:35Knight, Singer, and Cabot. One -one -fifth. Line
- 1:16:39drive, base hit. So Parker finally hits it where
- 1:16:42they don't put a player. Single up the middle.
- 1:16:46And here's Richie Allen, and that'll take a month.
- 1:16:55Richie Allen does not, does not... consider himself
- 1:16:58a home run hitter. He did not consider himself
- 1:17:01the type of a hitter, let's say a Willie McCovey,
- 1:17:05or a Willie Mays, or a Henry Aaron. He figures
- 1:17:08he is more of a line drive type hitter. But as
- 1:17:10we said, he has averaged a lot with the pitchers.
- 1:17:16It might be one of the longest, hardest home
- 1:17:18runs we have ever seen. Here's a strike one pitch
- 1:17:25to Rich. A little high, one and one. In the old
- 1:17:28ballpark at Connie Mack Stadium at the base of
- 1:17:30the center field wall it was 447. Then there
- 1:17:33was quite a bit of real estate behind the fence.
- 1:17:35And the double deck stands ran out to a direct
- 1:17:38point in straightaway centers. And Allen had
- 1:17:41a line drive that went halfway up the second
- 1:17:43deck in straightaway centers. It was as if it
- 1:17:47was truly shot out of a gun. The 1 -1 fastball
- 1:17:50is popped in the air in the right field. Callison
- 1:17:52has time to get under it because it's so high.
- 1:17:55Makes the catch for the odds. Two down, and Bill
- 1:18:00Sudeikis to bat it. Shudsey twice has rounded
- 1:18:03a Kessinger. He has hit the ball hard, but Kessinger
- 1:18:06makes him look easy. The Dodgers are hoping that
- 1:18:22tonight they will celebrate an anniversary. One
- 1:18:26year ago, the Dodgers snapped their five -game
- 1:18:29losing streak. They won three straight and seven
- 1:18:32out of ten, and the club is hoping to get off
- 1:18:34on the right foot tonight. Fastball, first strike,
- 1:18:37going on. Of course, this is a very different
- 1:18:42year. Last year, the Reds could not be beaten.
- 1:18:47This year, they finally won their first game
- 1:18:50today. Strike one pitch to Sudeikis, breaking
- 1:18:54ball, one out and a miss, strike two. However,
- 1:18:58Cincinnati, by winning their first game, knocked
- 1:19:01off a hot Atlanta club. The Graves had won four
- 1:19:04out of five. Houston climbs in the first place
- 1:19:10in the giant right back of them. And boy, I tell
- 1:19:12you, the Houston ball club, look out, strike
- 1:19:14two pitch. In the dirt, bounces off to the right.
- 1:19:18Parker hesitates. Now goes Martin's flow. It's
- 1:19:20not in time. Fastball guards to Martin. And check
- 1:19:28me on the score. Houston lost. So that noise
- 1:19:31comes from moving day up north. The Giants won.
- 1:19:35And Atlanta and Houston lost. So the Giants have
- 1:19:37moved into first place. Excuse me in the Bay
- 1:19:39Area. The Cardinals. Won their ballgame. They're
- 1:19:47at the 500 mark and they'll be in here Wednesday
- 1:19:49night. 1 -2 pitch to Sudeikis. Check swing and
- 1:19:58Martin does a little umpiring and he loses this
- 1:20:01ball too. J .C. tags Sudeikis. World on the RV
- 1:20:05who pointed to Dale and Jerry Dale flashed no.
- 1:20:08He didn't swing and it counted two and two. And
- 1:20:13I'm sure Doug Harvey leans over and says, J .C.,
- 1:20:15we are indebted to you for all of your help and
- 1:20:18consideration and interest, but we'll call them.
- 1:20:25Two two -fifths to Sudeikis. In five, all three
- 1:20:28to Bill. Four count to Bill Sudeikis. Parker
- 1:20:38at second with two outs. The Dodgers had Russell
- 1:20:40at second with two outs, but he couldn't get
- 1:20:42them over in the fifth inning. Three -two pitch
- 1:20:53to Bill. Found away, and he got that little on
- 1:20:56the foot. Still three and two. Three and two,
- 1:21:17the count to Bill Sudeikis. Parker, second. Holtzman
- 1:21:21-Ruddy with two out, and work five. All four,
- 1:21:24and that brings up Jimmy LaFeder. Jimmy LaFeder,
- 1:21:38twice, rounded his shortstop. He's 0 for 2. So
- 1:21:50Jenny gets a start tonight, get a right -handed
- 1:21:52bat in there and rest Willie Davis against the
- 1:21:54left -handers. Fastball is hit down the right
- 1:21:56-field line. Taliesin is not going to get it.
- 1:21:59It's in the corner and bouncing against the railing.
- 1:22:02In comes Flacker. Here to the plate and scoring
- 1:22:06is the Dakers on a triple by the Feaver. Triples
- 1:22:27into the right field corner. The Dodgers lead
- 1:22:304 -1 and the storm signals are up and so is the
- 1:22:33Chicago Bullpen. And Steve Garvey will be the
- 1:22:37batter with two outs. The Dodgers in the dugout
- 1:22:45will know how much cheering Lafever has done
- 1:22:48for them. Boy today holler up to him when he
- 1:22:51got to third base. Here's Garvey. He checks and
- 1:22:55fouls one away on one. Jim Colburn, a right -hander,
- 1:23:02along with a left -hander in the Chicago bullpen.
- 1:23:09Receiver down the line from third. Holtzman checking
- 1:23:13and Garvey waiting, and Holtzman off the rubbers.
- 1:23:1910 into the wind oven, the strike one -fifth,
- 1:23:22breaking ball hit to the left of Kessinger, but
- 1:23:24he eats it up. Goes across to Pepitone, the inning
- 1:23:26is over. But not before Lefebvre triples home
- 1:23:29two. So the Dodgers two runs, two hits, a man
- 1:23:32left. And at the end of sixth, the Dodgers four,
- 1:23:36Tubbs one. Friends of Farmer John, I'm going
- 1:23:38to give you a play -by -play report on his sausage.
- 1:23:41He started off with his freshness. After all,
- 1:23:43freshness is what you want most in sausage, and
- 1:23:45is what you're sure to get when the label says
- 1:23:47Farmer John. The good farmer brings fresh eastern
- 1:23:50corn -fed pork out here live, and it's U .S.
- 1:23:53inspected and dressed fresh right here in the
- 1:23:55West. Well, that's why Farmer John's sausage
- 1:23:57is a nice, rosy, fresh hue. Doesn't look gray
- 1:24:00like sausage chipped in toast in her whole story.
- 1:24:03Of course, the fabulous Western flavor of Farmer
- 1:24:05John's sausage speaks for itself. Farmer John
- 1:24:08makes his sausage to an old -time Western recipe,
- 1:24:11using only natural herbs and spices, and he grinds,
- 1:24:14mixes, and measures them himself. so his sausage
- 1:24:16is never over or under seasoned like some. Lean,
- 1:24:20meaty Parmesan sausage makes the West best breakfast
- 1:24:23and a hearty, awesome supper, too. It's the sausage
- 1:24:25that won the gold medal at the California State
- 1:24:28Fair. So enjoy Parmesan sausage often for the
- 1:24:31East and most in quality and the West and most
- 1:24:33in flavor. Don't forget, for the rest of the
- 1:24:38week, the Chicago Cubs tomorrow night, Bill Singer
- 1:24:40and Milt Pappas. Then the St. Louis Cardinals
- 1:24:43will be in. Wednesday night and Thursday night,
- 1:24:46Orlando Cepeda, Lou Brock, and that colorful
- 1:24:48gang. Over the weekend, the Houston Astros. Friday
- 1:24:51night is team night. Saturday night at 7 p .m.,
- 1:24:54ladies night. Sunday afternoon, autograph day
- 1:24:57and senior citizens day. If you drop by. Let's
- 1:25:00go to the seventh. Four to one Dodgers, and for
- 1:25:03more play, here's Jerry. All right, buddy, Pepitone,
- 1:25:05Cowlick, and Ortiz coming on. In the seventh,
- 1:25:08they can stand defense. This yield is just two
- 1:25:10hits. Pop flies in the third back -to -back by
- 1:25:12Becker and Williams, one in the right field and
- 1:25:14one in the center. So Sandy now working to Capitone,
- 1:25:18left -hand hitter up there. The pitch on the
- 1:25:19way, fly ball along the left -field line, it's
- 1:25:22going foul and out of play. Bounces up into the
- 1:25:25stands and it is strike one. So Vance now has
- 1:25:28a little breathing room as the favors couple
- 1:25:31to the right field. He gets two runs in. Strike
- 1:25:39one count, Pepitone waiting. Now the wind -up
- 1:25:43again on the pitch on the way, off -speed roll.
- 1:25:46Change -up in the dirt. One ball, one strike.
- 1:25:51Right -hander to left -hander, working in the
- 1:25:52cup bullpen out in right field. Tomorrow night,
- 1:25:55it'll be Pappas and Singer in the second game
- 1:25:57of the series. Pepitone backs out as another
- 1:26:01of the third base coach, Peanut Lowry. Lowry
- 1:26:04hit his head down with digging dirt along the
- 1:26:06spike, along the truck line. Fastball low, ball
- 1:26:11two, two and one. Vandy Vance, who pitched part
- 1:26:16of the year here and part at Spokane last year.
- 1:26:21Vandy's trying to get off to a good start here
- 1:26:23this year. He had a bad start in spring training.
- 1:26:26He was hurt the first day out. Playing catch,
- 1:26:28he caught one. He failed to catch one. The ball
- 1:26:31hit him in the mouth and lost two teeth. Two
- 1:26:33-one pitch, outside low for ball three and one.
- 1:26:37Then he had a sore arm. He finally did get a
- 1:26:40chance to pitch and has done well ever since.
- 1:26:46The band's waiting. 3 -1 pitch. Line up and down
- 1:26:53it comes. Too low and he walks in. That's the
- 1:26:56third walk and each time that he's walked about
- 1:26:58it's been the lead off an inning. Saddle in the
- 1:27:01second. Martin in the third and he's scored and
- 1:27:03now Pepitone here in the seventh inning. So three
- 1:27:07walks and here's Johnny Callison at bat. Rounded
- 1:27:10into a fourth play and butted and was thrown
- 1:27:12out by Steve Garvey. One on, nobody out in the
- 1:27:16seventh. They get somebody up in the bullpen
- 1:27:18to the Dodgers. Looks like Jim Brewer will start
- 1:27:20the fill. Callison waiting. Cortez on deck and
- 1:27:27Martin to follow. Vance with a pitch pull and
- 1:27:30a fly ball to left field. Allen was right there
- 1:27:32backing up a few steps. Ritchie waiting. Pass
- 1:27:35it to the out. It's one away. So Callison goes
- 1:27:37to left field with a fly ball. One out. And we'll
- 1:27:40see about Artees now. Jose Artees playing in
- 1:27:45center field and he's hitting 444. He's had a
- 1:27:48good start. Eight hits and 18 trips. Chance to
- 1:27:51play. He came to the cubs from the white side.
- 1:27:56Very speedy, playing in center field. Got your
- 1:28:04J .C. Martin out on deck. And then we'll see
- 1:28:08about Holtzman's spot. One out and one on. Tapatona's
- 1:28:11first base. Barker will not hold him on. Right
- 1:28:14-hand batter up there. And Vance now getting
- 1:28:17set to work. Now Vance goes off. Back to the
- 1:28:23rosin bag. Check on the runner. Vance delivers
- 1:28:34to the plate, pass ball backhanded by Sudeikis.
- 1:28:37One ball, no strike. Vance made his professional
- 1:28:43debut in 1968 at Ogden, and he was promoted to
- 1:28:46Spokane for a couple of games. He was at Spokane
- 1:28:50all of 1969 in 22 games. He had a 6 -6 record.
- 1:28:55And last year at Spokane he won five, lost four,
- 1:28:57and he was 7 -7 in the big league. Pitches in
- 1:29:00for a strike, Ortiz around as if it's not letting
- 1:29:02go by one -on -one. Kind of make him work a little
- 1:29:04bit. Vance working in the top of the seventh
- 1:29:07inning. Sandy, last year, in 18 starts, had two
- 1:29:13complete games. He worked 115 innings in the
- 1:29:17big leagues last year. The drive to left field,
- 1:29:20well hit. Allen going back for this one. It's
- 1:29:22going to be over his head. And one hop against
- 1:29:24the bullpen gate. Here's Capitonus third. The
- 1:29:27relay comes to Wills. Coming for the plate now,
- 1:29:30and Tepesaw is safe. A long go by Archie's over
- 1:29:33Allentown in left field. The whole day Archie's,
- 1:29:38the little center fielder, bang one, one hop
- 1:29:40against the bullpen gate in left field. That
- 1:29:43gets a run in. That's the second run for the
- 1:29:46score after a walk. It is four to two in favor
- 1:29:49of the Dodgers, and the catcher J .C. Martin
- 1:29:51coming up against Vance. We'll pause for station
- 1:29:54identification. This is the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 1:29:57radio network. Love thy neighbor. An easy thing
- 1:30:02to say. A hard thing to do. Because there are
- 1:30:07so many of them. And at our rate of population
- 1:30:10growth, soon there will be too many of them.
- 1:30:12This is KTAR radio, Phoenix, Arizona. ...from
- 1:30:15a long double to deep left field. Fans ready
- 1:30:18to pitch to Martin. Pass ball low. One ball no
- 1:30:21strikes. Four to two. In favor of the Dodgers.
- 1:30:24Vance has walked three, two of them have scored.
- 1:30:27Wills calls time, comes in now to talk to Vance
- 1:30:29at the mound. He'll keep an eye on Vance now.
- 1:30:32As I told you earlier, he's gone only five innings
- 1:30:35at the most all spring. So now we're in the seventh
- 1:30:38inning and he's given up a walk, a fly ball out
- 1:30:41and a long double by Ortiz. 1 -0 count, Martin
- 1:30:45waits. Here's the look in the pitch. Foul, straight
- 1:30:48back, strike one, 1 -1. Holtzman is out on deck.
- 1:30:52The Cubs have action in the bullpen. If Martin
- 1:30:54gets on, the odds are that Leo will send up a
- 1:30:57hitter for Kenny Holtzman. Four to two Dodgers
- 1:31:01lead it. Now the margin is the triple hit by
- 1:31:04Jimmy LaFever's drive -in Parker and Sudeikis
- 1:31:07in the bottom of the sixth inning. One ball,
- 1:31:10one strike. Vance with a look back at the runner.
- 1:31:14Pitch to Martin as a strike on a fastball, drilled
- 1:31:16in there, and it is one and two. One ball, two
- 1:31:28strikes. Waiting is Martin, he's the catcher.
- 1:31:34In for Randy Humbly. Vance ready again, looks
- 1:31:38and delivers. Popped up foul, off behind the
- 1:31:41plate. Cadega's coming back for it, it's going
- 1:31:43to be caught by Cadega. Right against the backstop.
- 1:31:47The opponent came all the way to the backstop
- 1:31:49screen to handle that one. Good play for Cadega.
- 1:31:53Two down now, we'll see about Holtzman. Looks
- 1:31:56like Jim Hickman is gonna hit for him. So Holtzman
- 1:32:00will leave and Hickman will come on as the pinch
- 1:32:02hitter. So for Kenny Holtzman, he worked six
- 1:32:06innings, allowed four runs, six hits, walked
- 1:32:09one, struck out one, and that was a considerable
- 1:32:11improvement over Holtzman's first outing when
- 1:32:14he worked four and two third innings and walked
- 1:32:16seven and gave up six hits and six runs. So here's
- 1:32:20Jim Hickman at bat. And boy, Hickman had a great
- 1:32:22year last year for Chicago. He had perhaps his
- 1:32:26best year ever. Hickman last year hit 32 home
- 1:32:38runs, 115 runs batted, and he hit 315. So here's
- 1:32:44Jim Hickman at bat. And Vance working with two
- 1:32:49outs. Fastball is inside, ball one on deck. Don
- 1:32:53Kessinger, the leadoff man. Four to two. The
- 1:32:56Dodgers lead the Cubs. And Sandy Vance trying
- 1:33:01to hold them back. Hickman last year played 149
- 1:33:05games. He's played in just two games so far this
- 1:33:10year, and he is 0 -4. Strike on a fastball, one
- 1:33:13on one. The Cubs are experimenting at the moment.
- 1:33:18They have Pepitone at first, and Ortiz in center
- 1:33:21field. Hickman can play first base or the outfield,
- 1:33:23and so can Pepitone. But right now, Leo's taking
- 1:33:26a look at Ortiz, and he's making a great impression.
- 1:33:29He's now had nine hits. He's played in just two
- 1:33:41games so far this year, and he is 0 for 4. Strike
- 1:33:44on a fastball, 1 -1. The Cubs are experimenting
- 1:33:48at the moment. They have Pepitone at first, and
- 1:33:52Ortiz in center field. Hickman can play first
- 1:33:54base or the outfield, and so can Pepitone. But
- 1:33:57right now, Leo's taking a look at Ortiz, and
- 1:33:59he's making a great impression. He's now had
- 1:34:02nine hits in 21 and back. 1 -1 count to Hickman.
- 1:34:09The van's waiting, and the pitch on the way.
- 1:34:11Curve low, and it's ball two, two and one. Hickman
- 1:34:1632 home runs last year and 21 the year before.
- 1:34:20Hickman almost quit professional baseball when
- 1:34:22he traded from the Dodgers to the Cubs and then
- 1:34:24was farmed out immediately to the minor league.
- 1:34:27He decided he's going to hang it up and he thought
- 1:34:30well maybe a try once more and he came back and
- 1:34:32played with the Cubs and he's had some great
- 1:34:33years with them. 2 -1 count. Now the look again.
- 1:34:38Vance backs off. Turn one to Jim Hickman, number
- 1:34:4728. Vance again with a sign. The look and the
- 1:34:51pitch. In tight, ball free. Three and one. So
- 1:34:55Vance now is in trouble. He has walked one, yielded
- 1:34:58a double, has two outs, and now Sudeikis and
- 1:35:01Wills both come to the mound to talk to Vance.
- 1:35:03On deck, Don Kessinger. Somebody goes to the
- 1:35:07phone to talk to the bullpen. All right, Hickman
- 1:35:18awaiting three and one. Two outs. Runner at second
- 1:35:21base. Four to two. Dodgers lead the Cubs. Now
- 1:35:27the three -one pitch. Curve lowly. Walking. That
- 1:35:31puts Jim in on base and brings up the leadoff
- 1:35:33batter, Don Kessinger. And here comes Alston
- 1:35:37to the mound. Kessinger coming up. Stops as he
- 1:35:40sees Alston go up. That's the fourth walk given
- 1:35:43up by Sandy Vance. And we'll see whether Alston's
- 1:35:47going to make a change here now on the seventh
- 1:35:49inning. Vance has pitched well, but he might
- 1:35:51be getting a little tired. He's only worked five
- 1:35:53innings with the longest spin all year. He's
- 1:35:56now in the seventh inning with two outs. And
- 1:35:58here in the last couple of innings, he's made
- 1:35:59a lot of pitches in this inning, not last inning.
- 1:36:01He got a one, two, three. So they switch hitter
- 1:36:04coming up. Alston now will elect the... See whether
- 1:36:10he wants to go with Brewer against Kessinger,
- 1:36:13batting right -handed, or stay with Vance. And
- 1:36:15it looks like he's going to go to the bullpen
- 1:36:17and bring in Brewer. He's looking out that way
- 1:36:20now as the second base umpire, Tom Gorman, comes
- 1:36:23in to join the conversation at the mound. Third
- 1:36:26base umpire, Thomas Kudus, is out in left field
- 1:36:28and they're going to bring in Brewer. So Sandy
- 1:36:32Vance gave it his best shot and will leave here
- 1:36:34in the seventh and he was two out, two on, a
- 1:36:37run in, and he leads by two. He cannot lose.
- 1:36:40He can win if Brewer can hold him. So Brewer
- 1:36:43now... the motor disc in the bullpen in left
- 1:36:45field, and Vance will leave. For Brewer, he'll
- 1:36:53be making his first appearance of the year. So
- 1:36:57here's Brewer coming in now, and the total's
- 1:36:59on Vance. We'll have to leave the door open.
- 1:37:01He worked six and two -third innings. He lost
- 1:37:05just three hits. Two pop fly singles and a booming
- 1:37:10double. He walked four, he struck out three.
- 1:37:12He has allowed two runs and has two men on base
- 1:37:15that are his responsibility. As Brewer comes
- 1:37:17in now. While Brewer comes in, a reminder, a
- 1:37:20date to remember, in fact, three of them. Helmet
- 1:37:22Weekend at Dodger Stadium, May 28th, 29th, and
- 1:37:2530th. Free helmets to every youngster at these
- 1:37:28three games. Why not order tickets now? Send
- 1:37:30orders to Helmet Weekend at Dodger's. Box 100,
- 1:37:34Los Angeles 9 -00 -51. That's the May 28th put
- 1:37:37at anchor 30. A round of applause for Candy Bancroft
- 1:37:40who goes strolling off the mound. He sits well.
- 1:37:53Another note, the Dodgers are lining up a great
- 1:37:55cast for their first Old Timers day. That game
- 1:37:58will be on Sunday, June the 6th. Already listed
- 1:38:01our former Dodgers to be honored, Duke Snyder,
- 1:38:04Don Newcomb, Wally Moon, and today Dixie Walker.
- 1:38:07There will be many, many more, so jot down the
- 1:38:09date, old -timer's date, Sunday, June 6th, when
- 1:38:12Gil Hyges and the Mets are in town. Checking
- 1:38:17the scores. Pittsburgh over Philadelphia, 4 -3.
- 1:38:23Justy the winner, Selma the loser, 111 innings.
- 1:38:26Cincinnati beat Atlanta, 7 -3. McLaughlin the
- 1:38:28winner. Reed the loser, Bench had two home runs,
- 1:38:31McLaughlin and Rose each had one, and Cepeda
- 1:38:33had one for Atlanta. St. Louis 5, Houston 4,
- 1:38:38had Carlton, won his second game, beating Glassen
- 1:38:40game. The Giants beat San Diego 5 to nothing,
- 1:38:47Perry all the way with a free -hitter, beat Kirby.
- 1:38:51The American League, Angel Creek, Chicago 3 to
- 1:38:532, Oklahoma, Milwaukee 5 to nothing, Kansas City
- 1:38:55and Minnesota 2 to nothing, Minnesota. Boston
- 1:38:57beat Washington 10 -7. Now, Jim Brewer, ready
- 1:39:03to go to work, making his first appearance of
- 1:39:05the year. Brewer pitching to Don Kessler, who
- 1:39:08turns around out of back on the right side. Two
- 1:39:11on, two out, and Brewer ready to work. Pitch
- 1:39:15on away, pops up in the center field. Out goes
- 1:39:18the favor, in comes Russell, Billy loses, cap
- 1:39:20falls, makes the cut, and the inning is over.
- 1:39:23So Brewer comes in, makes one pitch, and gets
- 1:39:25the side out. One run. On one hit, two laps,
- 1:39:31and the score at the end of six and a half minutes
- 1:39:33of play, Dodgers four, the Cubs have two. Love
- 1:39:36thy neighbor. An easy thing to say. A hard thing
- 1:39:41to do. Because there are so many of them. And
- 1:39:45at our rate of population growth, soon there
- 1:39:46will be too many of them. Too many to feed, so
- 1:39:50we'll starve. Too many to keep healthy, so we'll
- 1:39:54have plague. Too many to house, so we won't.
- 1:39:58Too many to love, so we'll hate our neighbor
- 1:40:00and we'll have wars without end. Because just
- 1:40:03by staying alive, our neighbor will be taking
- 1:40:06what we and our children need to stay alive.
- 1:40:10Zero population growth wants to defuse the population
- 1:40:13bomb before it blows up on our faces. Maybe you
- 1:40:17won't want to join ZBG in its efforts to protect
- 1:40:19the future, but you owe it to the children of
- 1:40:22America to find out. Call 939 -7798 for information,
- 1:40:30because the fuse is getting very short. Friends,
- 1:40:36next time you visit Dodger Stadium, be sure to
- 1:40:38drop by one of Danny Goodman's souvenir stands,
- 1:40:40pick up a copy of the 1971 Dodger yearbook. The
- 1:40:43great cover by Carl Hubenthal is worth the selling
- 1:40:45price of 50 cents. All right, you'll find the
- 1:40:47names of every Dodger who has played in the stadium.
- 1:40:50A fitting salute to the 10th anniversary season.
- 1:40:53Here's Jim Colbert coming on now. Young man from
- 1:40:58around these parts. Jim went to school in Whittier.
- 1:41:01He was born and now lives in Santa Paula. He
- 1:41:10went to Whittier College. And is working on his
- 1:41:16master's degree now. So Colbert is warming up
- 1:41:24now and he replaces Kenny Holtzman who works
- 1:41:27six and he's allowed four runs, six hits, and
- 1:41:30struck out 1 -1. Here's Bill Russell coming up
- 1:41:38now. Russell has one hit and two trips. He ought
- 1:41:42to hit the third. Last half of the seventh. Russell
- 1:41:50now will turn around and pass in the left side,
- 1:41:52facing Coburn. Coburn has been in one game, has
- 1:41:55worked just the third of an inning, and allowed
- 1:41:57one hit. Big right hander ready in the pitch
- 1:41:59on the way to Russell. Pull on him, and strike
- 1:42:01one. We're in the bottom of the summer's inning,
- 1:42:04and the Dodgers lead 4 -2 over the Chicago Cubs,
- 1:42:06first meeting of the year between the two teams.
- 1:42:11Coburn checking signs again into the windup,
- 1:42:13and here's his pitch. A swing and a miss, and
- 1:42:16a good breaking ball. Strike two. That ball seemed
- 1:42:18to run in on Russell. 0 and 2 to the count. Now
- 1:42:32the pitch on the way. Cap foul of Lefkoe, Texas
- 1:42:35swing. But a strange note about Cobran. He became
- 1:42:41the Cubs player representative as a rookie. He
- 1:42:46must be pretty smart. That master's degree is
- 1:42:50in sociology. The swing of the line drive caught
- 1:42:53by Becker. So Russell lines up to the second
- 1:42:56baseman one away and here's Brewer coming up.
- 1:42:59So Jim Brewer, who came in to replace Mandy Vance,
- 1:43:02coming up now. Coburn pitching. Not a lot of
- 1:43:19the ball. Another note about Coburn, I think.
- 1:43:21They had a night for him here, and his rookie
- 1:43:23here, the folks from Santa Paula came down to
- 1:43:25have a night for him, and I think that he was
- 1:43:26shook out the next day. But he kind of took it
- 1:43:30all good -naturedly by the boy. Line drive foul
- 1:43:34down the left field line, and the count to Brewer,
- 1:43:36one ball, one strike. So that'd be in 1969 when
- 1:43:40he came up with the Cubs for six games. He was
- 1:43:44with the Cubs last year. It was in 34 games and
- 1:43:46had a record of three and one. ball in the deep
- 1:43:51right field by a floater. Carlson going back
- 1:43:54to the track makes the catch for the off. Boy,
- 1:43:57that's about as hard as Jim Brewer will ever
- 1:43:58hit a baseball. A long high fly ball, and Carlson
- 1:44:01had to retreat all the way to the running track
- 1:44:04in deep right field. So Brewer a long out, and
- 1:44:07here's Wills coming up. Maury has one for three.
- 1:44:11Brewer will go back down and talk about his power.
- 1:44:14He goes down into the dugout, takes the helmet
- 1:44:17off, and has a seat. Over the bat rack, of course.
- 1:44:24Wills is about two down on the bottom of the
- 1:44:25seventh inning. Now the windup in the pitch.
- 1:44:33Off speed to Wills for a strike. 0 -1. Sandy
- 1:44:37Vance works six and two -thirds and he's allowed
- 1:44:39two runs, three hits in his first start of the
- 1:44:42year. 0 -1. Now the pitch. Bounced over the mound
- 1:44:48near second base. Becker's there. Up with it.
- 1:44:50Schroeder first. Wills is out to retire the side.
- 1:44:52So Colburn gets them out one, two, three, and
- 1:44:54the seven. Schroeder at the end of seven. Dodgers
- 1:44:57four and the Cubs have two. Marge, I'm home.
- 1:45:01Thank goodness, George. What a day. You think
- 1:45:03you had a bad day, Marge? Here I am driving home
- 1:45:06and it's hotter than a barbecue, right? And what
- 1:45:08happened? What, George? I turn on the air conditioner
- 1:45:10and it goes nuts. It was like a sauna bath in
- 1:45:13that car. They just don't make things the way
- 1:45:15they used to. I'll probably have to take it to
- 1:45:17a dozen places before I can find a guy who can
- 1:45:19fix it. You know why, Marge? Why do it? Because
- 1:45:21nobody tries anymore. Nobody's got the old spirit.
- 1:45:24We still try at Union 76. When you take your
- 1:45:28car to a Union 76 certified service man, he'll
- 1:45:30do the job right. Because he's had special training
- 1:45:33at Union certified service school. Up to six
- 1:45:35weeks for each certified service driver you wear.
- 1:45:38Tires, brakes, wheel alignment, two miles. If
- 1:45:40he's wearing the stripes, you know he can do
- 1:45:42the job. Even with complicated things. like air
- 1:45:45conditioners. Marge, the Union 76 guy with the
- 1:45:48air conditioning stripe found the trouble. Really
- 1:45:50George? What was it? I turned on the heater by
- 1:45:53mistake. Don't forget cap night when everyone
- 1:46:00at Dodger City, youngsters and oldsters get a
- 1:46:02cap. The date, Friday night, May 7th. The Dodgers
- 1:46:05and the Pirates here that night. Cap night on
- 1:46:07May the 7th. Jim Brewer trying to cap it up for
- 1:46:11the Dodgers here. And the Cubs come to bat in
- 1:46:14the eighth inning. Back to play. Here's Vance.
- 1:46:17I .J. Glenn Beckett will start it off followed
- 1:46:19by Billy Williams and Ron Santo. Jim Colburn
- 1:46:27picked up the pieces for Kenny Holtzman. Jim
- 1:46:29Brewer doing the same for Sandy Vance. Dodges
- 1:46:31leading 4 -2 and the fastball is low. Ball one.
- 1:46:351 -0. Beckett. is one of the toughest men in
- 1:46:41the league to strike out. He was the third toughest
- 1:46:43last year, and he's in the top 10 for the last
- 1:46:46four. And he whacks it in the left center field,
- 1:46:48base hit. Russell's deep to cut it off, and does,
- 1:46:51and a perfect throw to Will. So Glenn Beckert
- 1:46:55opens up with a base hit, and that means some
- 1:46:57big boys are coming up representing the tying
- 1:46:59run. That's William from Santo and Pepidome.
- 1:47:16Four -two Dodgers and here's Billy Williams popped
- 1:47:19up, singled and grounded out. Brewer ready and
- 1:47:23delivers and a breaking ball is outside. Ball
- 1:47:25one and the Dodger bullpen stirs around. Now
- 1:47:28there's trouble in River City. And Pete Mickelson
- 1:47:31begins to throw in the Dodger bullpen to Tommy
- 1:47:34Haller. Barker not holding the bag on Beckard.
- 1:47:40He wants a little room to roam down there with
- 1:47:43left -hand hitting Williams at the plate. For
- 1:47:45one hole pitch on the way, fast ball for a strike,
- 1:47:48and that's cool Billy. One and one. Leo Durocher
- 1:47:59lets out a little holler to Doug Harvey who nods
- 1:48:02and that's all. A little foul off to the left
- 1:48:04of the plate, tough play, no play. It hits the
- 1:48:08seat and comes back on the field, hits the covering
- 1:48:10of the dugout seat. One and two to Billy Williams.
- 1:48:33Billy Williams back up to the plate. Williams
- 1:48:38hit just under 400 against the Dodgers last year.
- 1:48:43He's 1 for 3 tonight. Brewer at the bell and
- 1:48:47the 1 -2 fits. On the hands foul back. Brewer
- 1:48:50dropping his arm and coming a little side on
- 1:48:52that time to the left hand hitter. Still 1 and
- 1:48:542. The word on Billy Williams. And, of course,
- 1:49:00he has been rookie of the year and established
- 1:49:03star for many years for the Tubs. But his own
- 1:49:05personality has matured considerably. He is definitely
- 1:49:08one of the team leaders now. The one -two breaking
- 1:49:11ball hits off Parker's glove in the right field.
- 1:49:14That was a shot. Becker is on his way to third
- 1:49:17and holding. And Billy Williams almost took Parker's
- 1:49:21hands off with a single to right. There are runners
- 1:49:23at first and third, nobody out. With Stantos,
- 1:49:27Pepperdorn, and Callison coming up. And that
- 1:49:31ball was stunned. The Dodgers, without an answer
- 1:49:37as to how to pitch to Williams, these two for
- 1:49:41four tonight. So first and third, nobody out.
- 1:49:45Dodgers holding on to a four to two lead. But
- 1:49:48for the first time tonight, the Cubs now have
- 1:49:50more hits than the Dodgers. They have been coming
- 1:49:52in the eighth as well as in the seventh. Sato
- 1:49:57takes the strike. Ron walks into a fourth play,
- 1:50:01struck out. Jim Brewer has allowed three hits.
- 1:50:14Now the pitch of the play, screwball, a high
- 1:50:17fly ball. That should be deep enough to get Beckard
- 1:50:19on. Russell angling under it makes the catch.
- 1:50:22Beckard comes and the throw goes to the feeders
- 1:50:24to keep the potential tying run anchored at first
- 1:50:27base. Lestano is scoring five balls. And the
- 1:50:34batter is Joe Pepitone. Here's Joe Pepitone.
- 1:50:59Popped up twice and won. He's 0 for 2. 4 to 3
- 1:51:03Dodgers. Brewer's tight -arm fastball hits to
- 1:51:06Parker. He goes to Wills. He's back to Parker.
- 1:51:10Double play. In the eighth inning for Chicago.
- 1:51:24One run, two hits. Nobody left. At the end of
- 1:51:27seven and a half innings, the Dodgers four and
- 1:51:29the Cubs three. A treasure on Disney kids' games
- 1:51:42when it's underneath the Atlantic Ocean. Sharks
- 1:51:46don't play games. Their ancestors must have had
- 1:51:49quite a piece 250 years ago when a hurricane
- 1:51:52sank a fleet of Spanish galleons. along with
- 1:51:5514 million dollars in gold doubloons and pieces
- 1:51:58of eight. If you're lucky, you'll find some of
- 1:52:02it. If you're even luckier, you'll live to celebrate
- 1:52:08it, with gusto. And man, that's when you know
- 1:52:11what life really is. Because you know you only
- 1:52:16go around once, and you gotta look for all the
- 1:52:18gusto you can, even in the beer you drink. That
- 1:52:23means shit. Why settle for less? When you're
- 1:52:27out of schlitz, you're out of beer. Bottom of
- 1:52:37the eighth inning, good bogey. Dodges four, cuts
- 1:52:40three. In the eighth inning, it'll be Manny Moda,
- 1:52:45Wes Parker, and Ricky Allen in that order. Manny
- 1:52:50Moda grounded out twice and lined out to right
- 1:52:53all three times going the other way, which is
- 1:52:55the usual way with Manny. He rarely tries to
- 1:52:59pull a ball. He swings and lifts one back to
- 1:53:03second base. Beckers is shortstop. Kessinger
- 1:53:06will handle it instead. So Kessinger handling
- 1:53:09the pop fly by Moda one away and the batter,
- 1:53:12Wes Parker. Wes Parker. who started the double
- 1:53:18play on the ball hit by Pepitone. West has lined
- 1:53:23out twice and singles. He's won for three, scored
- 1:53:27a run. Coburn ready and Jim delivers. Low, 1
- 1:53:34-1, 1 -0. If you are not keeping score and you're
- 1:53:38wondering about the Cubs in the ninth, they are
- 1:53:40due to send up Johnny Callison, Jose Ortiz, and
- 1:53:44J .C. Martin. Here's the 1 -0 pitch. Parker checks
- 1:53:48and it's a strike. Leo said before the ballgame
- 1:53:53he could and might use Randy Hundley as the pinch
- 1:53:57hitter as the situation came up. 1 -1 the count.
- 1:54:05The pitch to Parker is the ground ball down to
- 1:54:07second. Charging is Becker, short hops and gets
- 1:54:09him for the second out. Here is Rushie Allen,
- 1:54:21round of the third, hit a booming home run over
- 1:54:23the center field fence and slide to right. In
- 1:54:26talking about the possible pinch hitters on the
- 1:54:30Chicago bench, discount the name Ernie Banks.
- 1:54:37First pitch is tied down. Ernie Banks is on the
- 1:54:40disabled list. He went on the 1st of April, so
- 1:54:43he will stay on for three weeks. Banks. with
- 1:54:46the ball club worked out every day before the
- 1:54:48game but that's it. Strike one pitch, Allen has
- 1:54:51a look, he'll pay for it, strike two. So it's
- 1:54:56one time the Dodgers do not have to worry about
- 1:54:58the Great Ernie Banks coming up in the ninth
- 1:55:00inning. 0 -2 the count to Richie Allen. Coborn
- 1:55:09checking. Jim to the windup and the strike two
- 1:55:12fish. On the hands a broken bat, slow ground
- 1:55:14ball to short, Kessinger in a hurry, throws in
- 1:55:16the dirt dug out by Pepitone, and boy that bat
- 1:55:20will not be used again. Allen was really jammed.
- 1:55:23Dodgers are gone in the eighth and at the end
- 1:55:25of eighth, Dodgers four, Cubs three. Well here
- 1:55:29it is baseball season 1971, but much of the talk
- 1:55:32you hear is about the 1930s, even by those too
- 1:55:35young to remember. Now perhaps one reason is
- 1:55:38because the 30s didn't have our problems today,
- 1:55:40such as smog, litter, and elements that even
- 1:55:43affect our food. A farm boy delivered eggs that
- 1:55:45were barely out of the hen house, shiny fresh
- 1:55:48apples right from the orchard, and corn that
- 1:55:50was still growing just minutes ago. Well today,
- 1:55:53it's nice to know we have Farmer John and his
- 1:55:56pork. Pork so fresh it couldn't be fresher back
- 1:55:59in the famous Eastern Corn Belt. In fact, you
- 1:56:01might say Farmer John brought the Corn Belt out
- 1:56:04west. Because he gets eastern corn -fed pork
- 1:56:06out here live, not frozen or in cold storage
- 1:56:09like most packers do. Then the meat's U .S. inspected
- 1:56:12and grass -fresh right here in the West. So Farmer
- 1:56:16John Pork is strictly fresh. Farmer John Pork,
- 1:56:19the only fresh pork ever to win a gold medal
- 1:56:21at the California State Fair. Passport by name,
- 1:56:25Farmer John. As we go through the ninth inning
- 1:56:28with the Dodgers leading four to three. They
- 1:56:31make an outfield change for defensive purposes.
- 1:56:34They put Willie Davis in center field, move Bill
- 1:56:36Russell over to right field, and move Manny Mota
- 1:56:39over to left field. So the keeping score put
- 1:56:42Willie Davis in Richie Allen's spot. Randy Hundley
- 1:56:51will make an appearance. Randy... making his
- 1:56:56appearance and it'll be number one for the great
- 1:56:58young Chicago catcher who's been out with a bad
- 1:57:01knee. So, Hundley makes his first appearance
- 1:57:07of the year hitting for Johnny Callison against
- 1:57:11the left -hand hitting Jim Brewer. The pitch
- 1:57:16to Hundley, a strike on one. We mentioned earlier
- 1:57:20that Leo said that Hundley will catch, will start.
- 1:57:23against the San Diego Padres. Brew into the wind
- 1:57:30-up and the strike one -fifth. Screwball lifted
- 1:57:33to shallow center. Davis comes off. He's there.
- 1:57:36He's got it. You know one thing we always seem
- 1:57:40to forget. There is pressure on a ballplayer
- 1:57:43when he is put in in the last inning or so of
- 1:57:45the game for defensive purposes. That's a long
- 1:57:47time to sit around. And then suddenly they hit
- 1:57:50a ball to you and you've had no practice in a
- 1:57:52long while. Now, after that fly ball, Randy Hundley
- 1:57:57apparently, and we're only guessing, had that
- 1:58:00knee buckle on him. And Hundley, who was so close
- 1:58:03to playing, has suddenly fallen down and apparently
- 1:58:07hurt the leg again. What a miserable break for
- 1:58:11a great kid catcher from Virginia. And it is
- 1:58:14his right knee. Hundley is coming off two serious
- 1:58:18knee injuries back to back, and they're going
- 1:58:20to have to take a stretcher, I believe, and take
- 1:58:22him off. He is an Ironman catcher and suddenly
- 1:58:26last year he hurt his knee and now this year
- 1:58:29he hurts it all pop of it In fact Glenn Bechert
- 1:58:36and Joel Pepitone bring the stretcher out and
- 1:58:39I can hear Leo's words before the game When we
- 1:58:42asked him why wouldn't you catch Hundley tomorrow
- 1:58:45night if he can catch on Wednesday and Leo said
- 1:58:47I'm not gonna take any chances with him I'd rather
- 1:58:50be 10 minutes late than 10 minutes early. And
- 1:58:54then we said, could you use him as a pinch hitter?
- 1:58:56He said, oh, yes, as a pinch hitter. And wouldn't
- 1:58:58you know that hitting a fly ball apparently is
- 1:59:01spikes caught, and down he went and hurt the
- 1:59:03knee again. And boy, that breaks your heart,
- 1:59:08because he is a marvelous guy and a great ballplayer.
- 1:59:12Of course, the station identification, this is
- 1:59:14the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network. To give
- 1:59:28you an idea about what kind of an Iron Man Randy
- 1:59:31Hundley has been for the Cubs, in 1966 he caught
- 1:59:36149 games, in 67 152, and in 68 he appeared in
- 1:59:42160 of 162 games, in 69 151 games. And you can
- 1:59:49only keep your fingers crossed and hope that
- 1:59:51he'll be okay. That's a tough break. Here is
- 1:59:55Jose Ortiz. Brewer delivers fastball for a strike.
- 1:59:59Ortiz hit into a fourth playground of his short
- 2:00:01and ripped one over Richie Allen's head for a
- 2:00:04long double in the seventh inning. He short hopped
- 2:00:05the bullpen gate in left field. Strike one -fifth
- 2:00:11to Ortiz. Ground ball down to Wills. Morrie is
- 2:00:14up with it. Has to hurry. Gets him. Two down.
- 2:00:20New up is J .C. Martin. He will not come up.
- 2:00:24There'll be a hitter, Hal Breeden. B -R -E -E
- 2:00:28-D -E -N, a catcher. And Breeden will now come
- 2:00:31up and hit. And of course, I don't know whether
- 2:00:34Leo would second guess himself, but you know
- 2:00:37the human reaction will be, why in the world
- 2:00:39did I even use him? But of course, he's a professional
- 2:00:43athlete. He had to be used. And darned it, Hunter,
- 2:00:46he apparently didn't hurt that knee again. So,
- 2:00:48Hal Breeden... who is listed as a catcher but
- 2:00:53has been an infielder. Right hand battered. He
- 2:01:04has good power, so he's up there to try and do
- 2:01:08it with one swing. He has 37 home runs at Richmond
- 2:01:10last year. Fastball for site. now the strike
- 2:01:23one pitch to Breeden screwball low Harvey taking
- 2:01:26his head no he did not swing in the count one
- 2:01:28and one so Breeden is the third Chicago pinch
- 2:01:39hitter and the second in the ninth inning one
- 2:01:43one pitch to the right hand batter screwball
- 2:01:45one on a missed strike two one and two now Breeden
- 2:01:56from Georgia. Brewer ready, one, two, fish. One
- 2:02:00on him, next, Brewer got him, and the Dodgers
- 2:02:02win it four to three, as Brewer strikes out Hal
- 2:02:06Breeze. There are the totals of winning and losing

- 2:04:55was withheld, sending notifications next to kin.
- 2:04:57Grand Canyon National Park information officer
- 2:05:00Dick Reynier said the girl was sitting at the
