- 1:13Speaker 2: and whenever we feel like it. And let me tell you.
- 1:15Speaker 2: We're tired, same time last year. Actually it wasn't the
- 1:18Speaker 2: same time last year. I was a little later last year.

- 2:15Speaker 2: is patreon dot com slash Like a Virgin.
- 2:18Speaker 1: So with that in mind, we thought long and hard.
- 2:20Speaker 1: AKA we texted an hour before we had to be
- 2:25Speaker 1: in the studio about what we should you know, end
- 2:28Speaker 1: season two of Like a Virgin with and Phoebe jokingly
- 2:34Speaker 1: suggested the musical rent and we were like, not no,
- 2:39Speaker 1: not no. You Fran literally said not no, not no.
- 2:43Speaker 3: So said yes.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And one of the rare times I have said.
- 2:48Speaker 2: No, that's not your narrative anymore. Rose, you always say yes.
- 2:51Speaker 1: And oh thanks no, but no, but so yes. Today
- 2:56Speaker 1: we will be loosely discussing, you know, the rock musical Rent,
- 3:02Speaker 1: which you know, took the world by storm in nineteen
- 3:06Speaker 1: ninety six when it premiered both off Broadway and then
- 3:10Speaker 1: eventually on Broadway. Was later adapted into a feature film
- 3:14Speaker 1: by Christopher Columbus, probably the most misguided directing choice ever
- 3:20Speaker 1: made a live musical, and truly like has been weaponized
- 3:28Speaker 1: by theater kids across the globe for.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Decades now, weaponizing the text of Rent and their bfas
- 3:39Speaker 2: all at the same time.
- 3:41Speaker 1: When I think of Rent, and I want to know
- 3:43Speaker 1: if you have the same thought, I think very specifically,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and this might be a theater kid thing of the
- 3:51Speaker 1: double CD soundtrack.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Oh I had that, of course you did.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure I had that, Or if I didn't
- 3:58Speaker 2: have it, I definitely checked it out from the library
- 4:01Speaker 2: and burned it, burned both discs, not in.
- 4:04Speaker 1: The fire like you copied it.
- 4:06Speaker 2: No, no, no, remember barns our gen Z listeners if we
- 4:09Speaker 2: have any, might not know what that that terminology? Jesus
- 4:13Speaker 2: fucking Christ what gen Z listeners? I honest, So we
- 4:16Speaker 2: definitely have them, really, yeah, oh my god.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I thought it was mostly it is.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Mostly memornials, but there are some gen Z people.
- 4:23Speaker 2: H I know, I used to burn CDs profusely and
- 4:28Speaker 2: I'm sure Rent was one of those things. And for
- 4:30Speaker 2: a very long time, Rent was one of my kind
- 4:33Speaker 2: of key brand pillars. I would say it was like Rent,
- 4:38Speaker 2: it was Mulin Rouge and what else did I believe
- 4:42Speaker 2: in baz lerment?
- 4:44Speaker 3: I don't.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know. I don't know what the
- 4:46Speaker 2: third brand pillar is. I'll come, it'll, it'll come back
- 4:49Speaker 2: to me. But what about you?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Well, so I might surprise you by saying this, but
- 4:54Speaker 1: I don't really fuck with Rent like that, right, I
- 4:57Speaker 1: you know, I obviously.
- 5:00Speaker 3: I always think that you're like a super standard.
- 5:02Speaker 1: No. No, no, I'm obviously with Charlene. No, I'm honestly like,
- 5:06Speaker 1: of course, I'm very familiar with it. I've seen it
- 5:09Speaker 1: on Broadway, I've seen the movie. I know the songs.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I had the soundtrack. But it's not really my tea
- 5:20Speaker 1: with musical theater. I mean, we all know from listening
- 5:23Speaker 1: to this podcast, I am a recovering musical theater girly,
- 5:27Speaker 1: and I am also somewhat reclaiming it as as an adult,
- 5:32Speaker 1: but I always gravitated towards, you know, more classic musicals
- 5:37Speaker 1: and also more bombastic musicals, like we've talked about Phantom
- 5:41Speaker 1: of the Opera Is my favorite musical one of your
- 5:44Speaker 1: key brand pillars? Yes, yeah, definitely at the time, definitely.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And Rent was always a little too poppy for me
- 5:55Speaker 1: as a teenager. Yeah, And I I just didn't really
- 6:02Speaker 1: form my personality around it the way that a lot
- 6:05Speaker 1: of people that I was friends with at the time,
- 6:09Speaker 1: did you know, I was much more likely to be
- 6:12Speaker 1: listening to the Last Five Years soundtrack than I was
- 6:16Speaker 1: listening to Rent.
- 6:16Speaker 3: What's the Last five Years?
- 6:18Speaker 1: The Last five Years as a music hole by Jason
- 6:20Speaker 1: Robert Brown?
- 6:21Speaker 3: Who is that? He's a you wouldn't know him, okay,
- 6:26Speaker 3: and said it like it was somebody that.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I mean, he is somebody. But if you're a musical
- 6:31Speaker 1: theater girly like that. It's a two person show about
- 6:38Speaker 1: a married couple and the dissolution of their marriage, and
- 6:42Speaker 1: it takes place in opposite timelines. So the musical starts
- 6:49Speaker 1: from the woman's side with the end of their marriage
- 6:53Speaker 1: and then goes backwards in time, and then the man's
- 6:58Speaker 1: side starts from the beginning of their courtship and goes
- 7:01Speaker 1: forward in time and they meet in the middle when
- 7:03Speaker 1: they get married, and it is incredible music. Oh, it's
- 7:11Speaker 1: like a really like interesting storytelling device. Sherry Renee Scott
- 7:17Speaker 1: and Norbert Leo Butts were in the original cast. Shary
- 7:20Speaker 1: Renee Scott is like a Broadway legend and it has
- 7:25Speaker 1: some of my favorite songs in musical theater, like a
- 7:27Speaker 1: Summer in Ohio, like the Schmool song. Just kidding, I
- 7:30Speaker 1: hate the Schmool song. It was adapted into a film
- 7:35Speaker 1: with Anna Kendrick, which is not a bad movie but
- 7:39Speaker 1: is not like gag worthy, but it's I think it
- 7:43Speaker 1: was only ever off Broadway, but my friends and I
- 7:47Speaker 1: were obsessed with it in high school and I specifically remember,
- 7:51Speaker 1: did you ever do one of those all night like
- 7:54Speaker 1: cancer walk a thon thing? Yes?
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yes, my boyfriend at the time and I jerked each
- 8:03Speaker 2: other off in like a boy Scouts TN.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Okay, so while you were doing that, my friends and
- 8:07Speaker 1: I were sitting around like an artificial campfire, singing along
- 8:14Speaker 1: to the Last five Years.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Did you also have to wear t shirts that said
- 8:18Speaker 3: cancer sucks?
- 8:19Speaker 1: No?
- 8:19Speaker 2: Okay, we had these T shirts that said cancer sucks,
- 8:22Speaker 2: and all the proceeds went to cancer, not to cancer,
- 8:26Speaker 2: not pro cancer, anti cancer. It was actually to pro
- 8:29Speaker 2: cancer poses people things giving you cancer, no I U.
- 8:35Speaker 2: And every it was like it was like the new
- 8:37Speaker 2: north Face. Like everyone had a cancer sucks T shirt
- 8:40Speaker 2: because they came in lots of different colors, and it
- 8:42Speaker 2: was like really like crazy to have the words sucks
- 8:45Speaker 2: on a T shirt.
- 8:45Speaker 3: And it'd be like, oh, yeah, I mean.
- 8:47Speaker 1: That was that was rebellious as fuck in high school. Sucks. Yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 2: No, that is kind of the era of culture that
- 8:57Speaker 2: Rent found me. I didn't know that it was an
- 9:01Speaker 2: adaptation of Labohm for a long time.
- 9:03Speaker 1: It is famously an adaptation of the opera.
- 9:06Speaker 3: But instead of TV, it's AIDS.
- 9:08Speaker 1: It's AIDS. So for anyone who doesn't know the basic
- 9:11Speaker 1: premise of Rent, it's about or it's about a group
- 9:15Speaker 1: of young artists and like artists adjacent people living in
- 9:20Speaker 1: New York City in the nineties bohemians and they can't
- 9:23Speaker 1: pay their rent. They live in Alphabet City, which is
- 9:26Speaker 1: you know, downtown on the East Side, and a bunch
- 9:29Speaker 1: of them have AIDS and the only trans person or
- 9:34Speaker 1: like gender queer person is the one who dies of it.
- 9:38Speaker 1: There's a performance artist, there's a filmmaker who sells out.
- 9:43Speaker 1: There's a straight couple who are the great love story
- 9:48Speaker 1: of the piece. Yeah, both have AIDS.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I forgot that they are.
- 9:51Speaker 1: They are the centerpiece of the show, the straight couple.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Why because because Jonathan Larson, who wrote the music. And
- 10:00Speaker 1: this is something that a lot of people that gets
- 10:02Speaker 1: obscured a lot. And I mean even when we shut
- 10:04Speaker 1: up and we're talking about this, you were like, oh,
- 10:06Speaker 1: didn't he die from AIDS? And no, he died from
- 10:09Speaker 1: complications from an aneurysm. And he was straight.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah heterosexual, Yeah, he was straight and unfortunately died the
- 10:17Speaker 2: day after the very first dress rehearsal.
- 10:19Speaker 1: He died the morning after the Music Hall's final dress rehearsal.
- 10:24Speaker 1: What's your favorite song from Rent?
- 10:26Speaker 3: That's hard?
- 10:28Speaker 1: Mm?
- 10:29Speaker 3: Will you light my candle?
- 10:33Speaker 1: What are you staring at? Nothing? Your hair in the moonlight?
- 10:39Speaker 1: You look familiar? Can you make it?
- 10:43Speaker 2: Just?
- 10:43Speaker 1: Haven't eat much to stop spinning anyway?
- 10:49Speaker 2: What right?
- 10:49Speaker 3: Isn't she like coked out or something?
- 10:51Speaker 1: And she's on Heroin?
- 10:53Speaker 2: Oh?
- 10:53Speaker 3: Heroin?
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yeah? Oh that's she and Roger are both Heroin auticts.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Oh eh, I used to tie you up.
- 11:01Speaker 1: It's a living.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Doesn't the guy who plays Roger is gay?
- 11:05Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Oh really, no, Oh my god, that's so confusing.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Who went on Aida? And then wait, is this the
- 11:16Speaker 1: guy which also has Sharon Scott in it, who was
- 11:18Speaker 1: in the last five years?
- 11:20Speaker 3: Oh of course.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I have already told this story, or I've already said
- 11:26Speaker 2: in in maybe the first season of the pod that
- 11:29Speaker 2: this was definitely one of the things that like broke
- 11:31Speaker 2: me open.
- 11:32Speaker 3: It's I don't know why.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I'm only realizing that Mulan Rouge and Rent, which both
- 11:36Speaker 2: came into my life around the same time from the
- 11:39Speaker 2: same person who was mel that bisexual goth I was
- 11:42Speaker 2: friends with in They and my best friend's called a Sack.
- 11:47Speaker 2: She showed both of those movies to me, and they're
- 11:49Speaker 2: both about bohemians and they're both based on and they're
- 11:52Speaker 2: bolls based. Oh my god, they're based and they're both
- 11:56Speaker 2: about aids. Well, no, no, she has bargulations. She has consumption.
- 12:05Speaker 2: That's what they called TV.
- 12:07Speaker 1: You just love saying I do love saying consumption because
- 12:11Speaker 1: I consumption, because I do wish that I was like
- 12:14Speaker 1: a frail Victorian woman coughing up blood into a handkerchief.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Do you want to know what my favorite song from Rento's.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Yes, forgive me for not asking.
- 12:25Speaker 1: It's Over the Moon, which is the.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Song that no one sings, no one's ever heard of
- 12:32Speaker 3: flap song.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Only thing to do is jump over the Moon. It's
- 12:38Speaker 1: a Dina Menzelle, Maureen's character performing. It's her performance piece
- 12:43Speaker 1: that she does in the first act. It's incredibly iconic.
- 12:47Speaker 1: It's the one where she moves moove with me, moo
- 12:51Speaker 1: with me.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Oh, the performance art moment.
- 12:54Speaker 1: It's incredible and you have not lived until you've seen
- 12:57Speaker 1: Charlene do it at TNT on a Tuesday night. Move
- 13:01Speaker 1: with Me.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Shar is an actual Rent historian, And No's like, we
- 13:09Speaker 2: actually should we text her right now?
- 13:11Speaker 3: Do you think she's by the studio? She could come
- 13:12Speaker 3: right I actually, I actually talk about it for hours.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Well, she wrote a piece about rent Out that I
- 13:19Speaker 1: think I commission. I remember this, Yeah, and it was
- 13:23Speaker 1: really great. She she is definitely a rent scholar because
- 13:26Speaker 1: it is a very foundational musical for her. And yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 1: we should have planned ahead and had her back for
- 13:33Speaker 1: this episode, but we didn't.
- 13:34Speaker 3: We didn't plan ahead at all.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Also, Rent is a Christmas musical, right it is the
- 13:40Speaker 1: first act takes place on Christmas?
- 13:42Speaker 3: Or are you and I going to watch it on
- 13:43Speaker 3: December first this year?
- 13:46Speaker 1: Maybe? I haven't watched the movie in a couple of years.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So the movie came out when I was in I
- 13:53Speaker 1: guess probably when we were both in high school. It
- 13:56Speaker 1: came out on Thanksgiving. I saw it when I was
- 14:01Speaker 1: I was in Connecticut visiting my dad's family for Thanksgiving.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And you know, whenever we did that, there would be
- 14:10Speaker 1: one night where we would all go to the movies
- 14:12Speaker 1: and no one wanted to see Rent except me. But
- 14:16Speaker 1: I bullied my dad into taking me to it gay
- 14:22Speaker 1: and because it's not like I wanted to see it,
- 14:24Speaker 1: But I think the other option was National Treasure, and
- 14:27Speaker 1: I did want to see it because even though I
- 14:29Speaker 1: didn't love Rent, like obviously, I still liked it.
- 14:32Speaker 2: National Treasure is an exquisite film. I've never seen it.
- 14:37Speaker 3: It's an amazing movie.
- 14:38Speaker 1: But I will say, and I know this is kind
- 14:42Speaker 1: of blasphemous. In the years since, I probably have listened
- 14:46Speaker 1: to the movie soundtrack more than the OBC.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I definitely listened to the movie soundtrack. The OBCR,
- 14:55Speaker 2: the OBCR.
- 14:57Speaker 3: The movie son tract is good, the movie music is good.
- 15:00Speaker 1: It is you know, Rosario Dawson. I love voices. I
- 15:06Speaker 1: love Daphne ruben Vega, who was the original Mimi. She
- 15:11Speaker 1: is iconic both in Rent and in that scene in
- 15:14Speaker 1: the first Sex in the City movie where she talks
- 15:17Speaker 1: to the girls in the bathroom during the auction.
- 15:20Speaker 3: I just watched.
- 15:21Speaker 1: She was a smart girl until she fell in love.
- 15:26Speaker 1: But Rosario Dawson kind of four plus four?
- 15:29Speaker 3: That yeah, wait, what's four plus four? Is this new slang?
- 15:34Speaker 1: My sisters said it over the weekend, and I'm now adopted.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I'm so the way my eyes are rolling into my
- 15:45Speaker 2: skull right now, girl, that is It's fine.
- 15:48Speaker 1: I've got a four plus four that shut up?
- 15:51Speaker 4: No, but you know that you're now going to say
- 15:53Speaker 4: it off as your own.
- 15:55Speaker 3: No, I'm not.
- 16:17Speaker 2: What's the marine? I did a mental song, the first
- 16:20Speaker 2: one to take Me Baby. That's actually why didn't I
- 16:26Speaker 2: I redact what I said earlier.
- 16:27Speaker 3: My true favorite song is take Me Baby or Lave
- 16:32Speaker 3: Me That song fucks.
- 16:34Speaker 1: That song was created to be sung at karaoke by
- 16:40Speaker 1: people who are way too into singing it as happened
- 16:45Speaker 1: famously on an episode of Girls Yes This at Hannah's
- 16:51Speaker 1: birthday party when when Marnie tried to get her to
- 16:56Speaker 1: perform it on stage and she didn't want to. Also,
- 17:01Speaker 1: in the first season of Girls Showshana asks Marnie if
- 17:06Speaker 1: she's ever seen rent, and she says, of course, it's
- 17:08Speaker 1: the whole reason I moved to New York. That is
- 17:12Speaker 1: true for a lot of people, which is crazy because like, yes,
- 17:17Speaker 1: it does glamorize this experience of being like poor and
- 17:23Speaker 1: you know, oppressed living in New York City, but it's
- 17:26Speaker 1: also like not super It doesn't make it sound super appealing. No,
- 17:32Speaker 1: Like sure, lev bo M is a fun group number,
- 17:37Speaker 1: but you know the people are like killing dogs and die.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Paying rent and not paying rent. That's the whole premise
- 17:46Speaker 1: of the beginning.
- 17:46Speaker 2: They they literally are like, we're not gonna pay rent,
- 17:49Speaker 2: and you're kind of like, okay.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Okay, have you ever not paid rent somewhere you lived?
- 17:58Speaker 2: No, I did like dit a lease and left my
- 18:01Speaker 2: roommates add a listing with a lease under my name,
- 18:06Speaker 2: and it was just like just fill my room because
- 18:08Speaker 2: the management was unresponsive and just not helpful in doing
- 18:11Speaker 2: anything in terms of like getting next people in, they
- 18:15Speaker 2: like wouldn't it was whatever, we had negligent management. So
- 18:19Speaker 2: I paid rent, I found a subletter, and then I
- 18:22Speaker 2: moved on. But I found out that like months or
- 18:25Speaker 2: years later, my roommates did not pay that rent in
- 18:29Speaker 2: the final months because it was the pandemic, So that
- 18:32Speaker 2: might affect my credit score. Anyways, No, it's never happened,
- 18:37Speaker 2: but you probably have definitely squatted, maybe at least once.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I have once, not technically squatting, not squatting in
- 18:46Speaker 1: a way where the people I lived with and I said,
- 18:50Speaker 1: let squat, but in a way where I just was
- 18:54Speaker 1: very broke and did not pay a couple months of rent.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I briefly dated this guy who wait, oh wait, have
- 19:02Speaker 2: I told you about this guy that I dated who
- 19:04Speaker 2: co wrote musicals with his brother about the Egyptian Revolution.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Let's why don't you just tell it again?
- 19:10Speaker 2: So I literally like started eating this guy super hot,
- 19:14Speaker 2: unfortunately very straight passing. I had no idea who was
- 19:16Speaker 2: gay until we were making out, and then we started
- 19:20Speaker 2: to date and I ended up not really liking him,
- 19:22Speaker 2: but I was between sublets and I didn't have a
- 19:24Speaker 2: place to stay from, so I dated him for another
- 19:27Speaker 2: month so that it crash in his Upper West Side
- 19:31Speaker 2: apartment that his parents paid for and it was worth it.
- 19:36Speaker 3: And why did I bring that up? Oh?
- 19:38Speaker 2: Because I wasn't paying rent. You know what sucks? Rent cancer?
- 19:46Speaker 2: Also rent, rent sucks.
- 19:49Speaker 1: It has every sucked. Every month when my rent leaves
- 19:53Speaker 1: my bank account, a part of my soul leaves my body.
- 19:59Speaker 2: And can I be vulnerable? This year is the first
- 20:02Speaker 2: year since twenty eighteen where I've had trouble paying rent.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Like twenty eighteen, I was like starving freelancer, really having
- 20:10Speaker 2: trouble making ends, me digging deep into my savings, like
- 20:14Speaker 2: basically was saved by that job a out magazine. And
- 20:17Speaker 2: now I'm like kind of in the same spot. Rent
- 20:22Speaker 2: has really sucked the bone marrow out of my body.
- 20:26Speaker 3: And it's so expensive. Rose, your rent is really good.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Well it's about to be. It's starting next month. It's
- 20:32Speaker 1: going up two hundred dollars a month.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Which is not that bad.
- 20:35Speaker 1: It's bad.
- 20:36Speaker 3: It's bad. It's bad, but it's.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Bad considering nothing has been improved about my apartment.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Right, did you say that you never email them? I
- 20:45Speaker 3: never emailed them. You should email them.
- 20:46Speaker 1: It's too late. It's too late. I actually still haven't
- 20:50Speaker 1: told them that I'm renewing my lease and sent the
- 20:52Speaker 1: extra two hundred dollars to add to my security post.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I should do that.
- 20:55Speaker 3: You should just not pay the rate increase.
- 20:59Speaker 2: No, I'm not gonna do that. Yeah, just because I'm
- 21:02Speaker 2: not the people in rent. That's the other Yeah, I
- 21:05Speaker 2: just what was the plant?
- 21:06Speaker 3: Like? What happens after you don't pay? Do you don't
- 21:09Speaker 3: pay rent?
- 21:09Speaker 1: You get evicted?
- 21:10Speaker 2: You get evicted? Do you have like squatters rights? What
- 21:13Speaker 2: are squatters right? I?
- 21:16Speaker 1: Look, I know during the pandemic there was a lot
- 21:20Speaker 1: of discussion about squatters rights and landlords. I never really
- 21:25Speaker 1: investigated it too deeply because I have an incredible fear
- 21:29Speaker 1: of authority and.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Right shockingly, even though you break every rule, Yeah.
- 21:35Speaker 1: But I'm but I also really like following the rules.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Yeah you do, so I don't. I've never been in
- 21:42Speaker 1: a situation.
- 21:43Speaker 3: You've never been in a situation.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I've never been in this situation. So, yeah, I don't
- 21:51Speaker 1: know what happens when you stop paying rent? You I
- 21:55Speaker 1: guess start singing.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I guess you start singing.
- 21:58Speaker 1: You sing?
- 22:01Speaker 2: Well, that is the thing, rose, is that when you
- 22:04Speaker 2: cannot pay with money. You pay with art, beautiful, beautiful art.
- 22:08Speaker 2: And the landlords in rent they go, they look, they
- 22:12Speaker 2: took one look at Anthony Rap and they were like.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Your voice is so beautiful. Well, you don't have to
- 22:16Speaker 3: pay rent.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Because voice is not beautiful, but it's a pretty great. Wait.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Speaking of Anthony Rap, don't you have tea with him? Oh?
- 22:28Speaker 1: My god?
- 22:28Speaker 3: Do I have tea with Anthony Rap? Not anymore? But
- 22:34Speaker 3: one time?
- 22:34Speaker 1: Have you explored each other's bodies?
- 22:36Speaker 3: Yes?
- 22:37Speaker 1: No, no, have you explored each other's body? Addy addies.
- 22:41Speaker 3: He's not my type.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I don't go for guys that look like like target models,
- 22:49Speaker 2: like if you don't have any like tattoos or that's
- 22:52Speaker 2: pretty accurate. Yeah, like I any if you don't have
- 22:54Speaker 2: any distinctive features, if you're just like a guy like
- 22:59Speaker 2: I can't see you. But he's a gorgeous, talented man,
- 23:03Speaker 2: I'm sure. Anyways, I'm being diplomatic. We got into a fight.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I think around the time that the Charlene piece came
- 23:08Speaker 2: out on out dot com. I think it was a
- 23:10Speaker 2: pag to that are in relation to that, because I
- 23:12Speaker 2: got on my you know, on my little high horse
- 23:15Speaker 2: and tweeted about how the idea of rent was stolen
- 23:19Speaker 2: from Sarah Schulman.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Which it was?
- 23:21Speaker 3: Which it it?
- 23:22Speaker 2: You know, there's no way to prove that it was
- 23:26Speaker 2: fully plagiarized, but I think it's pretty undeniable that he
- 23:31Speaker 2: read her text and and borrowed a lot of things.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I think it's pretty pretty easy to look at the
- 23:37Speaker 2: facts and say that. So if you I don't think, Well,
- 23:40Speaker 2: the other thing is like the book that Sarah wrote
- 23:42Speaker 2: that he plagiarized was kind of one of her flat books,
- 23:46Speaker 2: like go read like Gentrification of the Mind or something
- 23:49Speaker 2: like that. I mean, that book isn't like good quote unquote.
- 23:52Speaker 2: That book just has a lot of like incredible ideas
- 23:54Speaker 2: and thought leadership in it, but it's not like an
- 23:57Speaker 2: enjoyable read. Actually, I would actually venture to say that
- 24:00Speaker 2: Sirciualman is maybe one of the most unfunny people on
- 24:03Speaker 2: the planet. Like she actually and this I'm saying this
- 24:06Speaker 2: as an admirer, Like she is a legend and I
- 24:08Speaker 2: would like love to have a body of work like
- 24:11Speaker 2: hers one day. But she is so on fun and
- 24:14Speaker 2: she cannot see like because of what she's gone through
- 24:18Speaker 2: and what she's reported on. Like you know, if Jonathan
- 24:22Speaker 2: Larson's gonna steal her play. She's gonna never stop talking
- 24:25Speaker 2: about it till the end of time. Anyways, I got
- 24:28Speaker 2: into a fight with Adam Lambert, Matthew Lambert and Anthony
- 24:32Speaker 2: Rap Anthony Rap about it on Twitter of all places,
- 24:38Speaker 2: which I never I said, you you disagree, but I
- 24:41Speaker 2: say I never. I never really get into spars with people.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I will go back and forth. I will like maybe
- 24:46Speaker 2: hit back, but I won't go like back forth, back forth,
- 24:50Speaker 2: back forth. And I went like back forth, back forth,
- 24:52Speaker 2: back forth with Anthony Rap on Twitter. It was kind
- 24:54Speaker 2: of wild.
- 24:56Speaker 1: What a different time? Yeah, can you and imagine fighting
- 25:01Speaker 1: with someone on Twitter in twenty twenty three?
- 25:04Speaker 3: Yes, I just did that. Oh your no, Phoebe, please bleep.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, Phoebe, Phoebe, Phoebe.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Oh wait, Speaking of Jonathan Larson, did you watch Tiktik
- 25:18Speaker 1: Boom when it was amazing? It's incredible? Andrew Garfield four
- 25:24Speaker 1: posport four He four plus four that it's so. I
- 25:30Speaker 1: actually me, I actually maybe liked tick tick Boom more
- 25:33Speaker 1: than rent in high school. Featured Amy Spanger, who later
- 25:37Speaker 1: went on to star in The Wedding Singer, which the
- 25:40Speaker 1: musical which I think I have discussed that I saw
- 25:42Speaker 1: eight times on Broadway my freshman year of college.
- 25:45Speaker 3: I don't remember that, but I don't think it needs
- 25:47Speaker 3: to be recapped.
- 25:50Speaker 1: But yeah, the movie of it was I think so
- 25:54Speaker 1: beautifully done.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Literally never seen The Wedding Singer. And just as a side.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Note, h the movie. The movie, I think you'd like it, Okay, yeah,
- 26:01Speaker 1: you you like Adam Sandler, No, you like Drew barrymore.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Love Okay, I mean not now that she's a scab
- 26:08Speaker 2: you but you redacted her scabbery.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you'd you would enjoy the Wedding Singer. Yeah, okay, yeah,
- 26:15Speaker 1: tictic boom exclamation point. The movie was really great. Vanessa
- 26:21Speaker 1: Vanessa Hudgens was so good in it. Andrew Garfield deserves
- 26:26Speaker 1: to have its assay always, but especially for that movie.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Once again playing wait, is that character gay? No, he's yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 2: because he's because it's basically an autobiographical musical about Jonathan Larson.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I mean it is an autobiographical musical. Sorry to make
- 26:40Speaker 2: this remark again, but Andrew Garfield insists on playing characters
- 26:45Speaker 2: that are not gay. For some reason. And it's always like,
- 26:50Speaker 2: like in that Mormon TV show that we want them,
- 26:53Speaker 2: remember the Mormon Particuped Dow, You're like, that character has
- 26:57Speaker 2: all the bones, make up, motivations and attributes of a
- 27:00Speaker 2: gay person, and yet the character is not gay.
- 27:03Speaker 3: And that's very surprising to me. And this was the same.
- 27:05Speaker 2: It's like Matt like Matthew Larson, Anthony Larson, Anthony, Jonathan Larson,
- 27:09Speaker 2: Jonathan Larson, thank you. I was just rolling through all
- 27:12Speaker 2: of the names until I got there, until you got
- 27:15Speaker 2: me there. Jonathan Larson also not gay, kind of wild.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And so I guess it makes sense that famously straight,
- 27:22Speaker 2: famously straight, but definitely thought of culturally as gay. Andrew
- 27:26Speaker 2: Garfield is straight, though he's not like one of those
- 27:29Speaker 2: closeted Hollywood type.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know his tea like that, but
- 27:34Speaker 1: to all appearances, he is straight.
- 27:35Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure.
- 27:36Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know his tea, but I know
- 27:38Speaker 2: I feel like I would know already he did.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I do remember the I think the one time that
- 27:44Speaker 1: he got sort of minorly canceled was when he said
- 27:48Speaker 1: something along the lines of like, I'm gay in everything,
- 27:51Speaker 1: but having sex with guys. Like it was him trying
- 27:55Speaker 1: to be like, you know, like I'm like culturally gay.
- 28:02Speaker 1: He really stepped in it that one. But he's a king.
- 28:08Speaker 2: He is a king, unproblematic, would suck to oblivion. He
- 28:13Speaker 2: used to be a huge crush to me and now
- 28:16Speaker 2: not at all.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Oh.
- 28:17Speaker 1: I think he's hotter now than he's ever been. He
- 28:19Speaker 1: got some hair plugs. He looks good.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Oh see, it's not his age that has deterred me.
- 28:25Speaker 2: It is my personal taste that has grown. I think
- 28:27Speaker 2: that he is still very attractive. He's just not really
- 28:31Speaker 2: he is.
- 28:32Speaker 3: So foreign.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Paying rent Wait what was the other there was another
- 28:40Speaker 2: performance art performance and talk about performance arts. So as
- 28:45Speaker 2: as has been somewhat alluded to on other episodes of
- 28:49Speaker 2: this podcast, I have myself dabbled in a bit of
- 28:54Speaker 2: performance art. I you know, at one point in my
- 28:57Speaker 2: life you could say that I was living a life
- 29:02Speaker 2: somewhat adjacent to the lives of the characters in Rent.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Oh. Would you say, uh, yeah, okay, you know, I
- 29:08Speaker 1: like considered myself like a starving artist, no more of
- 29:12Speaker 1: a Maureene. A Maureene, although you know, being friends with Charlene,
- 29:16Speaker 1: Like I could never actually be Maureene because she is Maureen. Yeah.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I have made some really bad performance art in my time.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I think I mentioned once that at a rave that
- 29:30Speaker 1: I threw once we buried Charlene in a trunk full
- 29:34Speaker 1: of dirt in the middle of a dance floor. I
- 29:37Speaker 1: ate a cow heart once, right, I remember the cow heart.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I covered a watermelon in sunscreen and ate it.
- 29:47Speaker 3: The artist is present.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I was doing. I wrote some really horrible you know,
- 29:53Speaker 1: spoken word poetry. Did you really? Oh?
- 29:56Speaker 3: Yeah, that seems so unlike that.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I that I then collaborated with a musician to create
- 30:02Speaker 1: an original score. Who was a friend of mine?
- 30:07Speaker 2: No?
- 30:07Speaker 3: I mean who was she?
- 30:08Speaker 1: Who was she? Who were you? She don't say that?
- 30:13Speaker 3: Yeah, this was so unrecognizable to me.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I know. But but you know what, I have been
- 30:18Speaker 1: thinking recently that I do miss some of that fearlessness
- 30:23Speaker 1: to look stupid. Are you saying you missed this stage? No,
- 30:26Speaker 1: I don't miss you saying you missed the glamor. I
- 30:28Speaker 1: do not miss the I do not miss a life
- 30:30Speaker 1: on the stage. Yes, as cringey as it can be
- 31:00Speaker 1: to think about, oh my god, I did that in public,
- 31:04Speaker 1: and it's actually more embarrassing. Sometimes it's less embaring to
- 31:07Speaker 1: think about the times when I did it in like
- 31:09Speaker 1: a warehouse full of thousands of people. It's more embarrassing
- 31:12Speaker 1: to think about the times that I did it at
- 31:13Speaker 1: like Macrey Park on a Wednesday, while like six people
- 31:17Speaker 1: were there. That is like a lot cringier. But at
- 31:22Speaker 1: the same time I feel pretty punk or for having
- 31:28Speaker 1: done that.
- 31:29Speaker 2: That's the history I was literally just talking about. So
- 31:32Speaker 2: I did conduct an interview with Connie Fleming on Friday
- 31:36Speaker 2: for the trans Oral History Project.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Cool iconic door girl.
- 31:40Speaker 2: If you don't know her, I mean, she's a model,
- 31:41Speaker 2: she's amused muglare Vivina Westwood, but also like very infamously
- 31:46Speaker 2: an iconic.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Door, sickening, sickening New York City nightlfe legends.
- 31:50Speaker 2: And we don't use the word iconic lightly, very intentional
- 31:53Speaker 2: with the use of the word icon even though it
- 31:55Speaker 2: is overused these days. And in interviewing her, I just
- 32:00Speaker 2: talking about how there is such a massive body of
- 32:05Speaker 2: work in nightlife that goes completely undocumented, not in the history,
- 32:12Speaker 2: not in the art world, like not in the echelon
- 32:16Speaker 2: or ancestry of like queer art or art in general,
- 32:20Speaker 2: especially when it comes to like drag artistry, it's like unrecorded,
- 32:24Speaker 2: and some of this stuff, like I mean, pre iPhone
- 32:28Speaker 2: is like lost to eternity because no one there. All
- 32:33Speaker 2: they had was the experience of it. And now which
- 32:36Speaker 2: I do kind of love, I kind of miss love.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I miss I always really liked the ephemerality of nightlife.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's something that makes it really special
- 32:46Speaker 2: and precious, if not like mystical, that those are things
- 32:52Speaker 2: that those are experiences created by and for queer and
- 32:56Speaker 2: trance people, the most marginalized in New York nightlife.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Club kids, et cetera.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And it was all like literally just for that one night,
- 33:05Speaker 2: just for the six people you perform to at TNT, Right,
- 33:09Speaker 2: And how like in the grand scheme of like what
- 33:13Speaker 2: something like Rent is trying to teach us that that's
- 33:17Speaker 2: like even more depressing thinking about all the artists from
- 33:20Speaker 2: that generation that have like unfortunately died and now they're
- 33:22Speaker 2: not a part of the cultural conversation the way someone
- 33:25Speaker 2: like a Sarah Schulman might be or other kinds of
- 33:28Speaker 2: kind of aids generation artists. But I'm really I mean,
- 33:32Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm happy or sad that like
- 33:34Speaker 2: now everything has recorded on the iPhone and so now
- 33:36Speaker 2: all drag performances in the history of forever will be
- 33:40Speaker 2: documented in time somehow. But they're not like collated. They're
- 33:44Speaker 2: not like put in a book. They're not putting museums,
- 33:46Speaker 2: and they really should be because like not to go there.
- 33:49Speaker 2: But like a lot of I know, you didn't do
- 33:51Speaker 2: drag like specifically, but like a lot of drag art
- 33:54Speaker 2: like is way more interesting than like what Marina Abramovich
- 33:58Speaker 2: is doing.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I'm sorry, yeah, I mean I did that was drag adjacent.
- 34:02Speaker 1: I'm very grateful that most of the public art I
- 34:06Speaker 1: made was pre transition, so if someone were to share it,
- 34:11Speaker 1: it would be kind of an act of violence.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Yes, love that.
- 34:14Speaker 1: And also I deleted my Facebook in twenty fifteen, so
- 34:17Speaker 1: so much of what I shared myself is just gone
- 34:23Speaker 1: of my own volition. But I do you know, I
- 34:25Speaker 1: have things saved the vault. In the vault, you know,
- 34:30Speaker 1: maybe one day I'll do a retrospective, a rent respective,
- 34:34Speaker 1: rent respective. I don't know that I would ever like
- 34:39Speaker 1: make performance art again, but you would.
- 34:43Speaker 3: But would you be on this?
- 34:46Speaker 1: Would you on mastage? We have been on the stage.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Girl different as us. Yeah, but it is a performance.
- 34:53Speaker 2: But when I was performing I was performing as me.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Yeah, Well when you eat it, when you eat a
- 35:00Speaker 2: cow heart at one of our podcast recordings, then you know,
- 35:03Speaker 2: maybe I'll be convinced. But I want to see you
- 35:06Speaker 2: what I'm really trying to I want to see you
- 35:09Speaker 2: eat a cow heart again.
- 35:12Speaker 3: In full drag. I want to see you covered in blood, and.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Girl, I've been covered in blood many times, and I
- 35:21Speaker 1: have I have lost many venue security deposits over spilling
- 35:26Speaker 1: various things on electric surfaces.
- 35:29Speaker 2: You're breaking one of Charlene and Kronin's cardinal rules of
- 35:32Speaker 2: nightlife performance, which is don't get to.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Make a mess on stage. Girl. Where do you think
- 35:37Speaker 1: that rule originated? My my friend Paul, who I used
- 35:43Speaker 1: to throw parties with. He performed as his alter ego
- 35:46Speaker 1: boy Wolf, and he used to I don't think he
- 35:50Speaker 1: started this, but there are definitely I remember sort of
- 35:53Speaker 1: a fad for this happening. He always used to bring
- 35:56Speaker 1: put a tart out on stage before he would perform.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Because he did a lot of stuff with food. It
- 36:01Speaker 1: would get very messy, and so that kind of became
- 36:03Speaker 1: a thing like when you were watching when you were
- 36:07Speaker 1: when you were at a party in Brooklyn and you
- 36:09Speaker 1: saw tarp coming out. You were like, oh, right.
- 36:10Speaker 4: Here we go again. There the blood. Prepare the blood,
- 36:14Speaker 4: prepare the milk. Prepare the milk, prepare the like fake
- 36:19Speaker 4: vomit flower, Like what a yeah? I mean look, I've
- 36:24Speaker 4: put down a few tarps in my time, and I'm about.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Just put a arm down last night, Anny, I want
- 36:34Speaker 3: to kill myself. I yeah, I haven't come in like
- 36:39Speaker 3: eight days.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Oh my god, yeah yeah, wow. I came yesterday, but
- 36:45Speaker 1: it was the first time I had come in like
- 36:48Speaker 1: a week because I was home visiting my family and
- 36:52Speaker 1: just not coming. Yeah, just not coming.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Well tonight, I want to lay down the term honey,
- 37:00Speaker 2: it's disgusting actually, Like my that's that should be.
- 37:04Speaker 1: A new thing. Would like you text me like what
- 37:06Speaker 1: are you doing? I'm like, I'm laying on the top.
- 37:10Speaker 2: What are your I used to own so many tarps?
- 37:13Speaker 2: Do you that used to be in my apartment at
- 37:16Speaker 2: all times?
- 37:18Speaker 1: I used to own so many tarps.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Too many tarps, too many tarps.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Well now I'm gonna put a tarp down every time
- 37:25Speaker 2: I have sex. Is there anything you like need to masturbate?
- 37:29Speaker 2: Do you need like a candle, like a special candle
- 37:31Speaker 2: or no, like some like music or like quiet doesn't
- 37:38Speaker 2: be quiet.
- 37:38Speaker 1: I need.
- 37:41Speaker 2: My imagination, your imagination, and friction, and some written erotica
- 37:46Speaker 2: and Uncle Ronney's New.
- 37:47Speaker 1: Hole No No Girl.
- 37:50Speaker 4: I read Uncle Ronnie's New Horror like pretty recently did
- 37:55Speaker 4: hold Up. It holds Up, It holds up, except they
- 38:03Speaker 4: use condoms in it.
- 38:04Speaker 3: That's hot. No safety is hot.
- 38:07Speaker 1: I mean we are talking about rents.
- 38:08Speaker 2: I love condoms. I literally love condoms. I will what
- 38:12Speaker 2: I will. I will constantly advocate for a condoms book.
- 38:15Speaker 1: I'm not saying you shouldn't have saved sex, but we
- 38:17Speaker 1: do live in the era of prep, so yeah, you know, well,
- 38:21Speaker 1: I and in in fiction, in in erotica, you should
- 38:28Speaker 1: not be using condoms.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Well I have been. I mean, this is okay, that's true.
- 38:32Speaker 3: That's true, that's true.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Like I will like like sometimes I'll read fan fiction
- 38:38Speaker 1: about like, you know, like this crazy scenario that would
- 38:44Speaker 1: never happen and no, and they will be like, oh,
- 38:48Speaker 1: let me put a condom.
- 38:49Speaker 3: You put the condom on his tentacles.
- 38:51Speaker 1: The girl girl, fuck you, I kill myself.
- 38:56Speaker 3: That's that's kind of wild. I like condoms. I don't
- 38:59Speaker 3: know why.
- 38:59Speaker 2: I think there's something nice about I think well, I mean,
- 39:02Speaker 2: if there's a mess, like it's less to worry about.
- 39:04Speaker 2: But also like, I mean, have you ever jerked off
- 39:07Speaker 2: into a condom? Yes, of course when I was younger, Yeah,
- 39:09Speaker 2: me too. But now I've been having sex with people
- 39:13Speaker 2: with uteruses where like for something, not all, but some
- 39:16Speaker 2: of them. It's like I would prefer to use a
- 39:18Speaker 2: condom for like whatever reason. But also a lot of
- 39:21Speaker 2: those people like can't get pregnant anyway, So.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and can you even impregnate someone at this point?
- 39:26Speaker 1: I can.
- 39:26Speaker 2: I still have quite a lot of I mean, not
- 39:28Speaker 2: a lot less than I used to, but I definitely could.
- 39:32Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know that for sure. I could
- 39:33Speaker 3: be completely infertile. And I think you're shooting blanks.
- 39:36Speaker 2: I know, I'm I'm I'm not not yet. I've been
- 39:39Speaker 2: monitoring it because.
- 39:40Speaker 1: I want to try to get me pregnant. Let's have
- 39:44Speaker 1: a baby, shoot, and we'll name it Phoebe.
- 39:48Speaker 3: The way this devolved so nicely, honestly.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Perfect.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Anyways, let's not pay rent this month.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I'm never paying rent again. Actually no, I will be
- 39:57Speaker 1: paying an extra two dollars in rent. But my little pony, pony,
- 40:05Speaker 1: my little pony, My little way of fighting the system
- 40:08Speaker 1: is that I have my auto pay set up to
- 40:09Speaker 1: pay on the fifth of the month. Oh, that's my
- 40:13Speaker 1: way to stick it to the man. They have to
- 40:14Speaker 1: they have to wait an extra five days to get
- 40:17Speaker 1: my money.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Yeah, the man.
- 40:19Speaker 2: And for the record, Virgins, we as a podcast know
- 40:24Speaker 2: that all landlords are bad, unless, of course, either Rose
- 40:28Speaker 2: and I decide to be one.
- 40:30Speaker 1: No, we are not becoming landlord.
- 40:32Speaker 3: It's alluded many times to potentially be.
- 40:35Speaker 2: No, and as on the podcast, you have I believe
- 40:39Speaker 2: that about you both said this.
- 40:40Speaker 3: On the record, Rose, we are off keys.
- 40:43Speaker 1: So we just so. Loretta LLC just bought a building
- 40:46Speaker 1: that we will be renovated and turning into artist lofts.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Yeah, bohemian living spaces co ops.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Uh.
- 40:56Speaker 2: I was gonna say sex parties, but we can't. We
- 40:57Speaker 2: don't have the infrastructure for that.
- 40:59Speaker 1: No. I haven't been to a sex party in so long.
- 41:02Speaker 3: I would like to maybe go to one.
- 41:04Speaker 1: I got invited to go to a queer romantic comedy
- 41:09Speaker 1: play that is being performed at a sex club, but
- 41:13Speaker 1: there's no, it's not I don't know. I have to
- 41:16Speaker 1: investigate further.
- 41:18Speaker 2: One of the people that I'm having sex with is
- 41:20Speaker 2: a facilitator of a sex party, and he frequents this
- 41:25Speaker 2: other I don't think he would mind whatever. He frequents
- 41:27Speaker 2: this sex party where it's called it's called studs and mares.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Who I like that. Yeah, well you know I'm a
- 41:35Speaker 1: horse girl.
- 41:36Speaker 3: You are horse girl.
- 41:37Speaker 2: And so the bottoms are the mares, and they don't
- 41:42Speaker 2: wear pants, and they like all stand in a line
- 41:45Speaker 2: like bent over when like the studs walk in and
- 41:49Speaker 2: do whatever they want to the mayors that are like
- 41:52Speaker 2: lined in their stables, so to speak. And this guy
- 41:55Speaker 2: was telling me, I think this is a really good idea.
- 41:57Speaker 2: He was like, I want to have a reverse studs
- 42:00Speaker 2: and Mayor's party, where like it's about the studs and
- 42:02Speaker 2: you walk in and it's all of these tops with
- 42:06Speaker 2: like viagrid out penises and you just mount and they're
- 42:10Speaker 2: the ones that are getting used.
- 42:11Speaker 3: I think that's amazing.
- 42:12Speaker 1: And they don't wear pants, but they do wear shirts.
- 42:14Speaker 3: They're just dildos.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's that's called. The technical term is shirt cocking. Oh,
- 42:20Speaker 1: when you wear a pant.
- 42:21Speaker 2: I thought it was called when you wear a shirt,
- 42:23Speaker 2: but no thought it was a Winnie the pooing.
- 42:24Speaker 1: No, it's shirt cock.
- 42:25Speaker 3: Shortcock shirt cock.
- 42:28Speaker 1: No matter what genitally you have, it's called it a
- 42:31Speaker 1: short cocking. So slide into our DM set like a

- 43:54Speaker 1: more so. The seasons I've watched are Murder House, Asylum,
- 44:00Speaker 1: Freak Show. I watched half Hotel. I watched half of Roanoke.
- 44:08Speaker 1: I watched the first It's the season where they like
- 44:13Speaker 1: flip it halfway through and it turns out what you've
- 44:16Speaker 1: been watching is like a TV recreation of something that happened.
- 44:22Speaker 1: I watched the first couple episodes of Cult. I watched
- 44:26Speaker 1: the entirety of Apocalypse. I watched the entirety of nineteen
- 44:29Speaker 1: eighty four Oh my God, which nineteen eighty four is
- 44:32Speaker 1: actually pretty good because it's like very tight. I didn't
- 44:36Speaker 1: watch Double Feature, and I'm I'm currently watching Delicate, so
- 44:40Speaker 1: I've actually watched most of the show.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Do you feel like Delicate? So I having not seen
- 44:46Speaker 2: all of the other series? Do you feel like Delicate
- 44:48Speaker 2: is kind of different from the rest of the franchise.
- 44:51Speaker 1: It's smaller like the world because usually American horror story
- 44:56Speaker 1: has lots of competing storylines, and that's part of why
- 45:02Speaker 1: a lot of the seasons are flawed, is because the
- 45:05Speaker 1: ones that you're more interested in don't get as much
- 45:07Speaker 1: time or they drop them or like merge them in
- 45:10Speaker 1: weird ways. I like how tight delicate is focused on
- 45:15Speaker 1: this one character and her story, which I think has
- 45:20Speaker 1: maybe happened over the past couple of years, like probably
- 45:23Speaker 1: like in a lot of ways because of the budget,
- 45:26Speaker 1: like they can't spend as much on like all these actors.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Because even think about Delicate like it has I mean
- 45:32Speaker 1: obviously like having Kim Kardashian as a gag but it
- 45:35Speaker 1: doesn't have like the huge gaggy cast that previous seasons
- 45:39Speaker 1: no have had.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Like Kim k is playing the same function as Gaga
- 45:43Speaker 2: in an Hotel. To me, it's just like gag casting.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Sorry, not a great actress.
- 45:52Speaker 1: I disagree.
- 45:53Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 45:53Speaker 2: I think that's I think she's so great. I think
- 45:55Speaker 2: that Gaga is better than Kim. Kay, But I do think.
- 45:58Speaker 1: You haven't seen Hotel.
- 46:00Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of clips of Hotel, okay. I
- 46:03Speaker 2: I think that Gaga's acting ability has significantly improved since Hotel,
- 46:09Speaker 2: like right, like like.
- 46:11Speaker 1: I don't know, Okay, I think it's pretty much the same.
- 46:16Speaker 2: She was basically playing the same character. I mean, no,
- 46:19Speaker 2: I okay, So more on Kim k. You think she's
- 46:22Speaker 2: eating I think she's eating. I mean, I do think
- 46:24Speaker 2: she's incredible. The thing is like, to me, obviously, when
- 46:26Speaker 2: Kim K's on screen, I'm not evaluating her acting like
- 46:29Speaker 2: that's not I was just saying that because like I
- 46:32Speaker 2: was trying to think about them playing the same function
- 46:34Speaker 2: and as like stunt casting in these series. But I'm
- 46:36Speaker 2: not evaluating Kim's acting like she's just and I think
- 46:41Speaker 2: that honestly, the flatness with which she delivers a lot
- 46:44Speaker 2: of her lines in a kardashian esque way works really
- 46:47Speaker 2: well for the affect of says. This is what Bubba says,
- 46:50Speaker 2: was sound like like it's kind of working.
- 46:52Speaker 1: It's like, I the episode where they go to the
- 46:57Speaker 1: Gotham Awards and Emma Robert's vomits during her speech, and
- 47:02Speaker 1: then the next day she wakes up in her bed
- 47:04Speaker 1: in the morning and Kim is laying in bed next
- 47:07Speaker 1: to her under the covers with her face fully b
- 47:10Speaker 1: I just started cackling.
- 47:12Speaker 3: It's so insane, mug stamps.
- 47:16Speaker 1: It's so but she's so good, and like the way
- 47:18Speaker 1: she delivers the lines is so You're right, it is
- 47:23Speaker 1: incredibly flat, but it's really funny. It works, and yeah,
- 47:27Speaker 1: it works, like you're you're never not aware that this
- 47:31Speaker 1: is Kim Kardashian, but like it that works.
- 47:34Speaker 3: And do you want to know? Do you want to
- 47:35Speaker 3: know a bit of a boma?
- 47:37Speaker 2: The ending has been spoiled for me because I knew
- 47:40Speaker 2: someone who worked on.
- 47:41Speaker 3: It, so I actually I think the ending knows.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I won't spoil it for you, but I think the
- 47:47Speaker 2: ending is a gag, and I think the understanding Obviously
- 47:51Speaker 2: kim Ka is giving villain energy from Jump. I'm not
- 47:56Speaker 2: saying that she is like the Big Bad, but I
- 47:58Speaker 2: will say that a lot of the way is that
- 48:00Speaker 2: all these different things pull off in the way that
- 48:02Speaker 2: Kim k pulls into Like what is at stake here
- 48:06Speaker 2: in the show is really good? What do you think
- 48:09Speaker 2: is happening with her baby?
- 48:12Speaker 3: Whatever? What are some fan theories that you might have?
- 48:15Speaker 1: I don't. I'm well, I don't know about fan theories
- 48:17Speaker 1: because it's not like I feel like I'm not going.
- 48:18Speaker 1: It's not like I've been going and looking. I mean,
- 48:23Speaker 1: you know, the clearest, this is obviously very much modeling
- 48:27Speaker 1: itself after Rosemary's Baby. That's very much a big inspiration
- 48:32Speaker 1: for this. So my guess was knowing that you find
- 48:38Speaker 1: you find out in the first episode that Kim and
- 48:41Speaker 1: Emma met in a fertility group. So I think that possibly,
- 48:46Speaker 1: like this baby is being like a grown and harvested
- 48:50Speaker 1: for Kim, right, and Emma is the vessel.
- 48:52Speaker 3: Okay, that's okay, Okay, love that, But I also.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Don't know, because the thing is with American horror story,
- 48:59Speaker 1: they could start out with one intention and then halfway
- 49:03Speaker 1: through the season completely abandoned that and decide to do
- 49:06Speaker 1: something else. Like with Covin, they had no idea who
- 49:10Speaker 1: the Supreme was when they started the season, and there
- 49:13Speaker 1: are so many moments of fake outs where they like
- 49:17Speaker 1: try to hedge towards someone like Tessa Familia is clearly
- 49:21Speaker 1: supposed to be like the one who might be the
- 49:23Speaker 1: new Supreme in the beginning of the season, and then
- 49:25Speaker 1: by the end like it being Sarah Paulsen comes out
- 49:28Speaker 1: of totally left field.
- 49:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:31Speaker 1: So and also, you know we only are getting for now,
- 49:35Speaker 1: We're only getting part one of Delegate because that's all
- 49:38Speaker 1: that was filmed before the strike, right, so you know,
- 49:41Speaker 1: when they go back, they might decide to like change
- 49:45Speaker 1: the whole thing.
