- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation podcast.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: No work.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Tristan, um, I don't I mean I don't think we we would be in this position after week one, but here we are.
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: You know, if you listen to our podcasts all summer long, you'd think we're about to be national champions, and this is this is how we roll out of the gates.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: Like I would say rolling in in a very literal form more than a theoretical, you know, metaphorical form is a quite quite the right word for it, I'd say.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would think the depression from football season would kick in a little later.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it usually does.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Usually does, usually does.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: But no, here we are.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: 0-1 lost to Wyoming and Laramie uh 35-33 in double overtime.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: A lot to talk about.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: We are gonna hit on pretty much a lot of gripes, but I'm glad we're recording two days after the fact because this would have been a much more doomer episode, I think, if we recorded Sunday morning or Sunday afternoon, even two sleeps in.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: I'm feeling okay.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Not obviously not great about what happened on Saturday, but less mad or sad.
- 1:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I was able to really escape it.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: I was I was gone all weekend.
- 1:57SPEAKER_04: So um my wife was very pleased that our first anniversary was completely overshadowed by Texas Tech football in a in the worst possible way, too.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: So, what a gamble I have every single year with how that day's gonna go.
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: That sounds very healthy.
- 2:10SPEAKER_04: I know, sounds like a very mature way to approach marriage, but you you know how it is.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: So I was able to you know shrug it off, you know, drink some beers, drink some wine, because we're out there in the wine country of Texas, and uh, you know, do your best to enjoy uh football season.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Football, it's a great sport.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: I've always wonderful sport, wonderful sport.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: I this game, I the analogy, the analogy I'm gonna give for it, it's like being given socks for Christmas.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Uh you look forward to that no, you're 12 years old and you're giving socks for Christmas.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, you look forward to Christmas all year, you're getting presents, you're excited, you know, you're out of school, this is great, and then you're given socks and nothing else.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Not not an Xbox, not a PS4, not uh, you know, one of these cool deals from an ant.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: You're just yeah, you're just given socks, and it lets you down big time because you had a lot of hope for Christmas and what you were gonna receive.
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: But and then your mom says you're too young for Grand Theft Auto.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: You're expected GTA, you're excited, doesn't happen.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Just because your Christmas sucked doesn't mean New Year's is gonna suck.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: It doesn't mean your birthday's gonna suck, doesn't mean next Thanksgiving's gonna suck, it doesn't even mean next Christmas is gonna suck.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: But this sucks.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: It sucks getting Christmas is the big one, though, dude.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Christmas is the big one, but you look forward to other things throughout the year, other holidays, and um this is just you we're disappointed after Saturday.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: There's no getting around it.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean that's that's the word I would use is just flat out disappointment.
- 3:45SPEAKER_04: I know that's not very creative, but um, I I mean that in a better way than straight Doomer mode.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think you and I both are are completely out of Doomer mode.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: We we I don't I was I never really truly entered Doomer mode.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: I didn't, I was just utterly disappointed.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: Like I just my you kind of go through your head about you know, perhaps fixing your expectations for the year, which I which I'm doing still.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: It's hard to just go back into the full belief again after dropping an egg against the G5 team.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: There's no getting around it.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: You got waxed by a G5 team that you absolutely should have hammered.
- 4:16SPEAKER_04: And um, they made you look silly, dude.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: They made you look silly all night long after 10 minutes.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: The I go back and forth because Wyoming that's a well-coached team.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they did what they needed to do to win the game, and they deserve props for that.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: That's not a coping mechanism.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: They actually played pretty well, and they deserve a lot of credit for that game.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: We still should have beat them by 20 or 30.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: It's uh there's no way around it that our team was more talented than their team, and we dropped this based on a few different things, and we can talk about that right now.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I think the number one thing you want to hit on when you're talking about this game is just undisciplined.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, Texas Tech team that was extremely undisciplined, you had seven penalties for 69 yards, all of which came at horrible times.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you had an intercept interception taken away by a hands-to-the-face call uh by a redshirt freshman defensive lineman.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: See, one part of that is he's a redshirt freshman, defensive lineman, and you understand that sometimes those guys are going to make mistakes.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: On the other hand, it took away an interception and really could have caused a whole different outcome for this game.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: You had an unsportsman-like penalty on Malik Dunlap that was very soft, but something that could have been avoided completely by just not shoving the offensive lineman after the play.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: You had a personal foul on Josiah Pierre that no, it wasn't a late hit.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: They called a late hit, but it wasn't.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: They could have reviewed it for targeting, which they did and they made the right decision, but still came in a bad time and it gave them a free first down.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: And there's holding in the red zone.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's plenty that you could have that you could have looked at for this false starts.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: It was an undisciplined team, Texas Tech.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: It's one thing to get like out schemes, it just flat out outperformed.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: It's another thing to lose the game yourself by just repeatedly shooting you in the foot.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: Like you said, I mean, I'll obviously all credit to Wyoming too, figuring it out and doing what they need to do to beat a team that's so much better than them.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: I'm not trying to be patronizing at all.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: They they really well was a David and Goliath situation, and they did what needed to be done.
- 6:23SPEAKER_04: Um, and to have I could forgive the poor offensive performance um for the game.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: Uh you can you can chalk it up to first game jitters, seeing what works, what doesn't, um, in your first game.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: But to just have this the sheer amount of undisciplined um on all fronts of the game, it's it's really, really, really frustrating because it's just that's the worst way possible way to lose a game because it's not for what's actually going on on the field.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: It's just stupid stuff on the peripherals, and that's very frustrating.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there were several times on several of those drives, Wyoming's first touchdown drive, we had three penalties on Texas Tech that kept the ball moving.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: You had situations in the second, third quarter where you put no points on the board that the ball was moving.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: You just made a mistake on third down, or you made a mistake on second down to put you further.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: That really just are backbreakers.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's like Shuck, the interception was on him completely, but you really only had one turnover, and that shouldn't have decided the outcome.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: I think Kitley put it really well in the presser that I just got done listening to.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Shuck played well enough to win, but he you expect so much more out of him.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: I assume you know, I I think he a lot of people are calling for his head.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Those are there, you're always gonna have tech fans that are calling for the next guy because that's the easiest thing to do when you're upset or frustrated.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: But I th Tyler Shuck had 388 yards or 338 yards and three touchdowns, 31 of 47.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: It's not an elite, elite stat line, but it's a good enough stat line to win the game.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: And there were just a majority of mistakes that he either he did, or the offensive line bad snaps, or the receiver dropped it, or you know, it's not all on him.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: He's the easiest one to blame here, but it's not all on Shuck.
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that that's that's a good way to put it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_04: I I think overall the offensive output was pretty pitiful, all things being considered.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, we're supposed to be a buzzsaw in offensive returning production, and obviously Kitley's a lot of uh offensive mind.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: And you're it's I'm afraid you didn't really see it this game overall.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: Um, like it's like you already hit on the most important thing about this loss was the penalties, and I do believe that.
- 8:39SPEAKER_04: Um, I think outside of that, we did win the game.
- 8:42SPEAKER_04: Um, but the offensive output generally was pretty stinky, and I get that this the backup quarterback is the most popular team on uh player on the field, whatever a team's losing.
- 8:52SPEAKER_04: Um, but he like like you said, dude, you expected more out of Tyler Shuck.
- 8:57SPEAKER_04: You have the super veteran guy at this point.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: You you you expect a killer instinct to kind of get laser eyes and will the team to a win, and unfortunately, you just didn't see that either.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: So I don't want to excuse Tyler Shuck.
- 9:10SPEAKER_04: I think the loss is also on him because you know it's it's a team effort first and foremost.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think the offense played more poorly than the defense did, and it starts with him, so I don't want to excuse him for it either.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that's fair.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't want to say that Tyler Shuck is blameless in this.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: I think he made his fair share of mistakes, but I also think a lot of other guys made mistakes here too, and he's kind of getting blamed for all that.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Um you were seven for 17 on third down.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: You can't have that if you're gonna win a if you're gonna win a football game.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: You didn't score for three and a half quarters of this game.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Unreal.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, you scored two touchdowns in the first four minutes, and then you made a field goal to tie the game to go into overtime at the very end of the fourth, but between that time you didn't score at all.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: And you can't, you're not gonna win games when you do that, especially if you're Texas Tech and you put so much emphasis on the offense.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: And really, with Kitley's offense, he puts so much of the offense's success on the quarterback that it is prevalent that Tyler Shuck needs to be better in a lot of different ways.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: And so I I thought the play calling itself was not aggressive enough, and Kitley mentioned that as well.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: You had opportunities against this defense that you could have taken shots for sure.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Shuck had a Shuck had a clean pocket.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: I think the stat was 80% of the time that he did a drop back.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: So you had opportunities that you did not take advantage of.
- 10:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like the that that pocket was a good thing to bring up because you know, during the game, I think a lot of us were noticing how long Tyler Shuck was in the pocket before making a decision.
- 10:46SPEAKER_04: And I mean, normally that's a pretty good thing because oh, oftentimes that means we can make whatever play we want to make, but it didn't really seem like that way.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: It seemed like he just kind of tried to get rid of it most times at that point, rather than finding a target and setting it downfield.
- 10:59SPEAKER_04: You know, it seemed like there was a lack of taking shots downfield, like you said.
- 11:02SPEAKER_04: Um, I think it's it's safe to assume that our receivers are much quicker than any defender Wyoming had on the field, you know, and more skillful to be able to uh make some plays happen.
- 11:12SPEAKER_04: But the receivers, like you kind of touched on before, they didn't play spectacular either.
- 11:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's some crucial drop passes that they needed to catch, and it's especially to get us into the end zone and really put Wyoming to bed because it's not like Wyoming was flying up the field offensively.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: Um, our defense helped walk them down with these penalties, but otherwise, the defensive performance wasn't pissed poor to where they were just shredding through us.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: Um, and so you had a lot of time to put some points on the board, and the offense just refused to do so.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there were some crucial mistakes that Shuck made when he had a guy open that was probably eight yards down the field, but he tried, you know, yeeting down a 20-yarder to get closer to the end zone.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: I know one in particular that stuck out was uh he threw a tougher pass to Bradley.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Uh it was a low play, it was a low pass.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Bradley still probably should have caught it, but he dropped it.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And he had Miles Price about 10 yards right there in front of him.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, he wide open.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: That you just need to make those plays instead of trying to make the the touchdown play, you know, necessarily.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: This is it's a long game, and um though that's the part of the game that I'm upset with Shuck at is bad decision making on certain plays that you just didn't need to do.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: You had a pocket, you went for it when you didn't need to, you needed to keep the ball moving to break their defense a little further, keep them on the field a little longer, and you didn't do that.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: So and and on top of the you know, easy stuff, ball slipping out of the hand on a third down, you know, that's or him slipping, him slipping, literally.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he had one of those where he just tripped, he had probably a 15-20-yard gain that he could have taken with his legs.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: Um did he seem hesitant to use his legs this game?
- 12:54SPEAKER_04: It felt that way to me.
- 12:55SPEAKER_04: I feel like there's oftentimes open alleys for him to get 10 yards and just move the chains, and it just seemed like he didn't want to do it.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: I actually think the opposite.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: I think he ran a little too much.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Uh he had 15 runs, I believe, in this game.
- 13:08SPEAKER_04: It didn't feel like at the end, it was over and over and over again.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: But yeah, yeah, I'm yeah, overtime.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: But uh somebody actually asked him about that, and I don't remember the reporter who did, but uh he asked Kitley about Tyler Shuck's running because he ran 15 times, and Kitley said he didn't call one quarterback run until overtime.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: That was the only time he actually called a quarterback run.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: But with these quarterbacks in the system, they have free will to change the play when they want to, to uh look at their reads, and if they make that split second decision to take off, and shuck did do that on a few things when he probably should have taken the shot to pass it downfield, and he didn't.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: So, you know, Shuck.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: There's two Tyler Shucks.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: There's one that we saw last year that's more of the you know, screw it Tyler Shuck that I like a lot more, and then there's this Tyler Shuck that we saw against Wyoming Tyler Shuck, the careful one who's too hesitant at times, who makes a few plays, doesn't necessarily trust in himself as much as he needs to, because he's a good quarterback.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: I still firmly believe Tyler Shuck's a good quarterback and can lead to a lot of wins.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: And we've seen that he can lead to a lot of wins for this team, but he just didn't play with that same attitude that he finished the year off last year with, and that's been the gripe with him with tech fans.
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, he came out like a shark, and then after that, he just seemed a little more shook.
- 14:30SPEAKER_04: He just he seemed a little too in his head, in my opinion, as the game went on.
- 14:34SPEAKER_04: He got a little too analytical.
- 14:35SPEAKER_04: I think he was like you said, I think I think he was being too careful.
- 14:38SPEAKER_04: I mean, whenever you're up 17 points, I think you can afford to, you know, make some make some gambles, man.
- 14:43SPEAKER_04: See if you can just pile on and keep it going.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: I mean, if it results in a turnover or perhaps a a a boxed drive, at least you know you tried to move the rock, you know, with purpose rather than this kind of snail pace thing that we started seeing as the game went on.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: There's there's more than just the quarterback.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: The offensive line, I thought, played very well in pass protection.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: They gave Shuck opportunities to throw the ball and gave him a lot of time in the back.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: There were also some bad snaps from rusty stats.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: I thought he was low on a lot of these.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Obviously, one of them caused a fumble that Shuck luckily jumped on and recovered.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I think he was pretty nervous playing in his first game for Texas Tech.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: And uh I thought the run blocking was pretty terrible.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, you saw that 2.8 yards carry on 33 carries for our running backs.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: You can't have that.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: You need better protection for and and better holes for Taj Brooks and Cameron Valdez to make a play on.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: They didn't really get an opportunity to do that.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: And I there's a couple parts of this.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: I thought Kitley didn't involve the run game as much as he should have at the beginning of the game and kind of tried to get that going later on, and that was a detriment to us.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: But I also think that the blocks past the line of scrimmage were not good and did not give Brooks or Valdez a chance to really succeed.
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, great, great points.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: But I think all in all, an improvement um from last year already, you can see.
- 16:12SPEAKER_04: Um, that's that seems like a small detail you can begin to work on in practice.
- 16:16SPEAKER_04: Um, I think in no way, shape, or form did the loss come at the hands of the O-line tonight.
- 16:20SPEAKER_04: That's for sure.
- 16:20SPEAKER_04: I think it was one of the the better units on the field.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: I I thought they were they were good in the first game.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: They can definitely improve.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: There were still some dumb penalties.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Landon Peterson had one of those after Welburn went down.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Caleb Rogers had a dumb false start that screwed us up, took us back a couple plays, and um you know, there's there's improvement to be done on every position of this team, but I thought overall the O-line was was pretty good.
- 16:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Sam.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: So let's talk about defense.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: Um they played well enough for you to win.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: They only scored 35 points.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: They double overtime, that's pretty good.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Um they broke a few times.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: They're Ben don't break.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: You have a lot of those plays throughout a football game, and uh the defense broke, one of which was the last fourth and seven.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: You had him in double overtime, and Rabbit rushed the quarterback, got to him pretty quickly.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: The other safety didn't get over in time to guard the tight end, and they converted and got a touchdown and tied the game when that should have been the play.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: That should have been the play where you get a dub instead of you're going you're starting the season 0-1.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: So there were the penalties, I think, were majority on the defense.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: There was again that dumb hands to the face, you never should have that penalty.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: It took away an interception for you.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: It took away, and that would have been take three.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: That's their whole mantra is take away three.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: That would have been the third one, and you didn't get it back, and they scored a touchdown on that drive.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: So there's there's just things a lot of people are complaining about the pass rush.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: I agree on a lot of that.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: We were told Miles Cole and Steve Linton are those dudes and future first-round picks in the NFL by this coaching staff, and so we have expectations for those two.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: And I don't think they delivered on those expectations in game one.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: I just don't.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I think they were solid, they made some plays, but overall the pass rush was after they got to the quarterback, they didn't fill those lanes, right?
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: And the quarterback escaped for some positive yards on a lot of opportunities.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: And so that's on those pass rush guys.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: I I just I think they can be so much better and they were than they were this game.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think that's fair.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: I think you're lucky that the Wyoming quarterback is quite frankly not that great.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: He was he he really doesn't have uh pinpoint accuracy.
- 18:52SPEAKER_04: Um, he he he relies on his legs a ton, and that should have been a a blessing for us.
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: Um, but it ended up, you know, obviously leading to an L anyway.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: But I'm with you, man.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: I I I think the I think the defense played well enough.
- 19:04SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, we started this podcast um complaining about the offense, and I think I think the the loss is in the hands of the offense because I really do think the the defense played well enough for you to win because you know you expect the offensive output to be able to uh what was what what we go into overtime with what seven uh 2020?
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: 20 yeah it was 2020.
- 19:22SPEAKER_04: So if I I'm perfectly okay with our defense allowing 20 points a game, and that's you you should absolutely be winning that game, especially with the kind of talent we have, you know, with that with our with our attack unit.
- 19:32SPEAKER_04: So that I'm not I'm my frustration isn't really with the defense.
- 19:36SPEAKER_04: Yes, you wish that they won you the game, but they were really being put in a position where it was all in their hands when it's supposed to be a 50-50 effort at the end of the day, and quite frankly, it wasn't in this game.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I thought the secondary played fantastic.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: I thought, besides, you know, an unsportsman-like penalty on Dunlap, everybody was pretty terrific.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: I thought Ray Shad played well.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Braylon Lux, I was thrilled with.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: I thought he had a few plays this game.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: New he's the transfer from Fresno, who came in and kind of shocked a lot of people by being first in the depth chart at corner.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: He played phenomenal.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: And I thought Rabbit played phenomenal for the majority of the game.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Baskerville had some plays, but the inside linebacker scares me.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: It really does.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: The Pierre had a great game, he led the team with 14 tackles.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: But if you could have one position where you didn't have a guy go down with an injury, it would be that.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: And unfortunately, Jacob Rodriguez went down and he is out four to six weeks, according to Joey McGuire.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: And so you're gonna play only young guys plus uh Tyreek Matthews, who I thought was late on a lot of his plays, missed some tackles against Wyoming.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: You still have Josiah Pierre, but you are you were already thin at that position, and now you're even thinner.
- 20:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 20:55SPEAKER_04: And it was obviously a great play.
- 20:57SPEAKER_04: He won the fumble, but it ended up costing him, like you said, four or five weeks, and that that hurt so bad, especially whenever he's you know proving to be already be already proving to be a playmaker immediately, taking the balls away like that.
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: So uh just a really frustrating um showing on that front as well, uh that for sure.
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: And I like that you know you brought up that the secondary actually played quite well.
- 21:16SPEAKER_04: Um, I was the whole game, I wasn't I had no fear in the Wyoming deep ball at all.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: And a lot of that, of course, was on the uh because of our the way our defense uh played in the backfield.
- 21:26SPEAKER_04: Um obviously it was those short uh dink passes that really uh and you know short runs really um walked them down the field, which ended up obviously putting points on the board for them.
- 21:35SPEAKER_04: But I'm with you, man.
- 21:36SPEAKER_04: I think I think that's uh that's a very valid uh analysis of the way the defense played.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so a lot a lot to improve on from pretty much every position on this team.
- 21:47SPEAKER_04: But you lost to a G five team, man.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: You lost to a Mountain West team that you should have lost to, but give props to Wyoming because they played they played a fantastic ball game and they played their style.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: You had conflicting styles.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Styles going into this game, and tech should have controlled it, and Wyoming absolutely controlled this one.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: So last thing, last thing I want to touch on before we get to kind of some injuries and what's next after this, you know, special teams, a lot of people are complaining about kicking, which is understandable when you look at two for five.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: But I thought there was very acceptable reasons for the miss field goals.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: One came at the end of the half, you made it, and the refs called it back because of a poor stopping.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Like they stopped it with one second left.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: It should have been stopped with three seconds left, and you should have had more time to snap that ball.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: But that didn't happen for you.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: You still made the first field goal, and then second one comes around, you miss it.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Other field goal, the second miss field goal was on Gino.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: He kicked it too low, kicked it right into the R O-line, but also our our line was getting pushed back, quite frankly, way too far on a field goal.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: So you can give that one to Gino, and then the third one was a 50 yarder.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, shoot, that's a tough field goal to make.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: So I, you know, I still have faith that Gino Garcia is going to be fine.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: He drilled a 54-yarder to start it.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: He made the one that counted most with the 27-yarder to put you in OT.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: So, you know, there's there's obviously you you'd want to make those three that you missed, but I I don't think he's gonna be an issue for the majority of the season.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: I really don't.
- 23:23SPEAKER_04: No, I'm with you 100%.
- 23:24SPEAKER_04: I I'm not nervous about Gina Garcia.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: I was actually quite impressed with what I saw.
- 23:27SPEAKER_04: And like you said, he was put into some really tough situations with really only one field goal being completely on him.
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, like, but even like you said, there's still outside factors with that kick as well.
- 23:35SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, no, he he really uh you know boomed in with style whenever he got that whenever he nailed that first 50 plus yarder uh to put us up 17-0, um, which would sadly be the last points of the game until the very end.
- 23:47SPEAKER_04: Um, but dude, I like you said, I I was really pleased with what I saw.
- 23:51SPEAKER_04: I don't think I'm gonna be nervous whenever we take kicks uh and going forward, especially in normal situations.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: Um, and not all of them are 50 plus yards.
- 23:58SPEAKER_04: Um, so all in all, dude, I think this I think uh the kicking team did fine.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, me too.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't think there needs to be a change of kicker or anything like that.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: I uh we'll ride with Gino.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: This is such uh we talk about it all the time with kicking, it's such an emotional, uh, you know, mental battle that these guys have to play.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: And um I don't think there should be any ill faith in Gino per se.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: Uh sure.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about some injuries.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: We already hit on Jacob Rodriguez four to six weeks, uh, with an I believe it was an ankle.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: This one obviously hurts.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Josiah Pierre, according to Joey, is going to move to Rodriguez's position, which is going to be the will linebacker.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna play Ben Roberts at the mic, we're gonna play Ticana at the mic, we're gonna play a bunch of young young dudes.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: Tyreek Matthews is gonna play a lot at both positions.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Um, this sucks, it really does.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: This is uh, I I couldn't have picked a worse player to go down with an injury.
- 25:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely, man.
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: And especially on game one, you know, and at a position group where you already feel kind of nervous about it, just it always seems to work that way, doesn't it?
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: And it's just it's always so demoralizing when it happens.
- 25:11SPEAKER_04: But it's the all you can say at this point in time is I guess it's a next man up mentality, and just hope for the best at this point when it comes to those dudes, and hopefully they're hungry to fill that role with some purpose.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's all about how you step up and how you work and practice, knowing you're a lot's gonna be on you and you're not just the backup.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: So I don't know, mentality could change, and these guys could be prepped, but this this sucks.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, right before the game, we all of a sudden got a huge uh piece of news from the Lubbock Avalanche Journal.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Isaac Smith, who was a backup um pass rusher, uh kind of outside linebacker position, he's gonna be out for a huge chunk of the year.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: This was unexpected.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Apparently, they found in a recent MRI of his that he's been playing with kind of a partially torn ACL for the last two years.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Don't know how this was just now discovered.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: Did you not notice something was hurting exceptionally bad over and over again?
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's tough with those because it's not torn, it's only partially torn, so you're not feeling the full scope of it.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: And he's still playing pretty well on it.
- 26:19SPEAKER_04: You still want to be out there, you know.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: And you still want to be out there, you know.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: The guy's not gonna be like, Oh, my knee hurts.
- 26:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: So I think they're making a smart decision by keeping him out that he's gonna have a knee surgery to hopefully repair it fully so that he can come back and play.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: But again, this is a knee surgery, you're having it the first week of the season.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna expect Isaac Smith to play this year.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: That sucks because he was gonna be a depth piece for you that was gonna be really good in that pass rush.
- 26:46SPEAKER_04: That really sucks, but that's that's something that you know that the health and safety of the player has to come first and foremost.
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: This is this is more than football.
- 26:51SPEAKER_04: You don't want to mess up this kid's leg for the rest of his life.
- 26:53SPEAKER_04: So you want to make sure you take care of it.
- 26:55SPEAKER_04: You hope he gets well real quick.
- 26:57SPEAKER_04: And it's just a real I feel really bad for him because he probably wants to be out there more than anybody else.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: So um that's that's a real bummer.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and to get that news right before you're gonna play week one.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, you go through all fall camp, you go through spring ball, and then all of a sudden, nope, sorry.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: So that stinks.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Uh Dennis Wilburn also got injured at the uh he was playing uh, I believe right guard four years, one of the guards.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Um, he got hurt during this game.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: He's expected to play against Oregon.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, I didn't really like Joey's tone when he was saying he expects him to play, barring any setbacks, but uh, you know, we may see some backup linemen against Oregon.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: Man, it just stinks, dude.
- 27:32SPEAKER_04: It's week one.
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: They're going down a long list.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: It's football, man.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: It's football.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Injury stinks.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: I hate the Jacob Rodriguez injury.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: I hate it.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: I know, man.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: Especially after a huge play.
- 27:44SPEAKER_04: Like, that's so heartbreaking.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he was playing phenomenal before he got hurt.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: So, all right.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: Um, I just want to say that, you know, obviously it's really easy to be done with this team, right?
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: But I do want to say that this was a tough game one.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: Like, no matter what what it was, like on paper, that is a tough game one.
- 28:02SPEAKER_04: You're the what Wyoming was returning, what, 86% of their players?
- 28:06SPEAKER_04: You're in Wyoming.
- 28:07SPEAKER_04: It's nighttime, the the the stadium is packed, and this is the biggest game of the year on their schedule, you know, and it that this was the game they want probably wanted to win more than any other others.
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: You have a P5 team coming into town.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: So I I'm not trying to excuse the loss by any means because you should have won that game, and at the beginning, it looks like you're gonna do it convincingly, and he completely dropped the ball on that.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: But if you're gonna this is not the end of the world, though there is still the entire season to go, and I know people have been comparing it to Kansas State losing to Hulane last year and ending up winning the Big 12 championship.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: It can end up being pretty comparable comparable for the to that, especially because we are in Wyoming.
- 28:44SPEAKER_04: If we are hosting it in Lubbock, I I I think it's easy to say that we win the game.
- 28:49SPEAKER_04: And obviously, I think if we play this game three times out of five, we win this game.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: But um, I do want people to you know not lose faith in this team.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: You know, it's a long season ahead of us, and you have the perfect opportunity to completely erase this from memory of this upcoming weekend.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I started thinking about if we beat Oregon, everything's forgotten and we move on.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's how you move week to week, and you should do that anyway.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: You shouldn't get too high after a win, you shouldn't get too low after a loss.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: This is a new week, it's a new team you're preparing for.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: You're in a new environment, you're back home.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and it, you know, there's always gonna be the fans that are horrible.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: They're say a bunch of bad stuff, and it's easy to be emotional in the moment as well, you know.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: Obviously, saying, like, I'm so done with this during the game, but obviously being right back there Saturday.
- 29:40SPEAKER_04: That's that's what a lot of people, a lot of us are gonna do.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: So um, but yeah, no, I'm with you.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm more speaking to the ones that are adding players and coaches and I hate so much.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: I hate it, I hate it.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: It's the worst thing you can do as a fan.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: You you I don't know how it makes you feel better where you're tagging Tyler Shuck or you're tagging Joey Maguire in a tweet that says they're the worst and they should not have a job.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I don't know you the people that are tweeting at at potential Fed Raiders saying please still consider us.
- 30:14SPEAKER_04: Shut up.
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: Never tweet at recruits for any reason.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: You're you're the worst type of fans, you are the worst type of fans if you're doing that.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm very comfortable with saying that.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: I love Red Raider Nation.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of people that um do stuff like that, and it's sickening.
- 30:32SPEAKER_04: Uh you know, we say all the time that the internet's not real life, and obviously there's some you know truth to that, but at the same time, the internet is real life.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: There are those those are real people on the other end of that.
- 30:42SPEAKER_04: It's not like whenever you're screaming at a car that you know cut you off in traffic, they can't hear you.
- 30:47SPEAKER_04: You're just you're just letting you're just venting some frustration on the internet.
- 30:50SPEAKER_04: You're you venting for frustration, the other person sees that and they they read that and they feel that hate coming through the phone, even if you don't mean it in the moment.
- 30:59SPEAKER_04: If you get like that during a game, it's probably best if you just stay off, just stay off your phone, stay off Twitter and all that, and come back around the next day whenever you you've cooled off, you know.
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: Because we we can all do stupid stuff, and if you're more prone to do something stupid like that, just probably just stay away from your phone or you know during a game.
- 31:13SPEAKER_04: It's it's just it's it's it's not it's a pretty good move.
- 31:16SPEAKER_04: And that way you'll focus on the game anyway.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: Even if you have a burner account, TTU 1942.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: That makes it even worse.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: That makes it even worse, in my opinion.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're just the worst type of people, and we all know that.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: There that doesn't really need to be said.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Actually, giving them the light of day on the podcast is for sure, yeah, is stupid.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: So let's roll.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, we move on.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Um expectations.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: So, you know, we predicted 10 and 2 on the year.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: We both did.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: A lot of people expected us to win eight, nine, ten games this year.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: I think that's still a possibility for sure, despite what we saw on Saturday.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Do expectations need to be completely reset, in your opinion?
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: No, I don't think they should be completely reset.
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: Um, but I think any realistic fan is taking a look at the schedule thinking, okay, we probably were really high on the on the off-season hot uh vibes, you know, on the off-season coach speak, the off-season um returning, like who what what what could be.
- 32:13SPEAKER_04: Um now we're kind of settling into the real world, and I think you know, winning 10, 9, 8 games got a lot harder.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: It did.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: You know, this is this was supposed to be an automatic W.
- 32:23SPEAKER_04: And it's not.
- 32:24SPEAKER_04: Now you're gonna now you're you're getting out of the out of conference at best, two and one.
- 32:28SPEAKER_04: At best, and you're about to head into Big 12 play, where all those teams are gonna be better than Wyoming.
- 32:33SPEAKER_04: And it's so you just kind of you do kind of recalibrate, but I don't think the dream is dead.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: No, I don't think so either.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: The thing about losing early in non-con is it doesn't count towards your Big 12.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 32:44SPEAKER_04: We are 0-0 in Big 12 play, yeah.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: And there's a lot of good that comes with that.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: That's not an excuse for how you played against Wyoming, it's not an excuse for how you're gonna play against Oregon, but you obviously want to win these out-of-conference games, but overall your goal is to win the Big 12, and you still have that opportunity as much as anybody.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: So I I expectations don't need to be reset completely.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: I don't think you're now looking at a team that's gonna play like this game in and game out.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: You're gonna see improvement from this team.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Do I think it's a 10 and 2 football team?
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Not after what I just saw, but hey, that expectation could change if we go and beat Oregon in Love next week.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of stuff that needs to be improved upon.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: There is players that need to get a better handle on things.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: There are coaches that need to play or coaches that need to coach better for sure, better play calling.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: But this is not the end all be all, a loss against Wyoming.
- 33:41SPEAKER_04: I think there's I think it's we need to kind of have a goal reset.
- 33:44SPEAKER_04: I think we got way ahead of ourselves as fans and maybe potentially staff and players as well.
- 33:49SPEAKER_04: Um, because you know, our it kind of felt like goal number one was make it to the Big 12 championship game this year.
- 33:55SPEAKER_04: Rather than going through your progressions, how about win game one?
- 33:59SPEAKER_04: How about get bull eligible?
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: How about um, you know, then you start discussing, okay, what needs to happen for us to make to be in Arlington at this point.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: It kind of felt like we we just skipped three steps, you know, multiple multiple steps straight to the end.
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: And I'm wondering if perhaps our team was looking past Wyoming at the ducks, you know.
- 34:18SPEAKER_04: So I think we kind of need an objective recalibration and start taking things step by step rather than just uh the big picture all the time.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: I I don't think we did look ahead to Oregon.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: I think there were it's natural when you're when you have an opponent like that coming to town that you do think about them before you before game week, it's just gonna happen, with especially with everything Chuck going back, playing his old team, everything like that.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: So the only thing that I think has changed for me expectation-wise, before the season, I was looking at teams like Kansas State, Texas, Oregon as equals.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Now, with those games, I'm thinking you're gonna have to play up to beat them.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: I I thought this team is good enough talent-wise, and was gonna show it that this is gonna be more of a 50-50 game.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: Now you're gonna have to play up to beat these teams, in my opinion.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: And I don't think that's overreacting.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: I just think that's what you saw on the field with you know these performances from these position groups.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Oregon played better, Texas played better in week one, Kansas State played better, and you could talk about who they played and everything, but you didn't prove it that you are on the same level as some of those teams right now.
- 35:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think that's the perfect way to put it.
- 35:32SPEAKER_04: I think I don't think that's uh being a bat fan or anything like that.
- 35:34SPEAKER_04: I think that's just the reality of the situation.
- 35:36SPEAKER_04: In addition to that, you know, like you don't need to start swinging up at the heavyweights, you can't overlook anybody anymore.
- 35:43SPEAKER_04: It's it's you saw what happens whenever you know you you seem like you're just gonna breeze by a lower tier opponent, which Wyoming was.
- 35:49SPEAKER_04: We are the better team.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: But if you just try to skim by, that's not gonna cut it.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: Like everybody wants to win.
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: And so it's you gotta, I think we all gotta remember that each time we go into every game.
- 35:58SPEAKER_04: Like Kansas is not an automatic W.
- 36:00SPEAKER_04: You know, they're gonna want to win too, and it's gonna be in Lawrence.
- 36:02SPEAKER_04: So it's just you I feel like we've just kind of completely reset our head as to you know, looking at each game individually rather than you know, this a sequence of events kind of thing.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: You you gotta focus on who you're playing next.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: You don't look at UT, you don't look at OE or whoever, Kansas, you don't look at them multiple weeks ahead.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: You gotta focus on Oregon.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: And these guys are gonna focus on Oregon.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: I firmly believe that.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Let's move into that a little bit.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: Let's get to it.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: You got the Ducks, 6 p.m.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, Fox, another night nighttime game where you have to wait all day.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: That sucked.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: I I don't know how I don't know how people do it constantly.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: Like LSU, I live in Baton Rouge.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: So LSU, they always have a night game, like they're always on at night.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: They have to wait all day to for their team to play.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: When you're tailgating and when you're at the game, it's different.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: But when you're just sitting there watching other teams play, it's it's quite it's boring, you know.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: Like I like watching other teams and other games, but I I was like that six hours from 12 30 on felt like two years.
- 37:05SPEAKER_04: I low-key, you know, over I'm not there, enjoy watching my team play on Thursday night.
- 37:11SPEAKER_04: Because okay, yeah, hold on, hold on, because you know, you get to you get to obviously get to watch your team early first, and then if you win, you get to just enjoy football games for the rest of the weekend.
- 37:22SPEAKER_04: And if you lose, you get to tell the wife, hey babe, what do you want to do this week?
- 37:25SPEAKER_04: And with some with some points that way because you're not gonna want to watch any football.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's how I feel with 11 a.m.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: I'm like, if it's a road game, I'm 100% cool with an 11 a.m.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: kickoff because we're watching our team first, and yeah, you're probably gonna be sad if you lose that game.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: But hey, if you win, you're just everything's great.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: You have your Saturday night to hang out and celebrate and be happy.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, that Thursday is the same way.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: You go through your work week, but it's still like late in the day.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: You're still awake and you're kind of just waiting for you.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's true.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: But another night game is really what I'm trying to say here.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Big boy Fox.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: Um, Oregon's six and a half point favorites right off the bat.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: We'll give our picks and our score predictions and all that good stuff uh when we talk about our picks, but let's just talk about Oregon a little bit.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: They're coming off an 81 to 7 victory over the Portland State Somethens.
- 38:21SPEAKER_04: The Vikings.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Vikings.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say the Portland State KJ Allen's because that's where he went after the shit.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: The Vikes.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: The Vikes.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: Anytime you put 80 points on somebody, it's it shows you something.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Obviously, this team is a top 15 team in the country, and they deserve that preseason ranking.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: They uh have Bo Knicks as their starting quarterback, a veteran guy who I have never fully bought into the Bo Knicks hype.
- 38:50SPEAKER_04: He's played on every team in the in the country.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: He's shown flashes of greatness at both Auburn and Oregon last year.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: He's also been extremely inconsistent in a lot of this stuff.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: And beating Portland State 81 to 7 does not give me the the scared, you know, it doesn't make me scared because they beat Portland State by a billion, you know.
- 39:13SPEAKER_04: No, I'm 100% with you, man.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, I I think it I don't think it really says as much as uh maybe it's just because we're on the uh other end of this that uh perhaps you know, you know, uh them blowing out their opponent doesn't mean anything with them coming to Lubbock.
- 39:27SPEAKER_04: And if anything, it can give them perhaps a false sense of overconfidence.
- 39:31SPEAKER_04: I don't know how real any of that is, but I don't think we should be intimidated by that score.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: I I think it does prove that their skill positions are great, yeah.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: They have a lot of great options, and this is Oregon.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: We're talking about great recruits every year.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: This is a fantastic program.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: Their wide receivers make plays, their running backs, that's probably one of the best running back rooms in the country.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: You have a quarterback that is solid, if not shows flashes of greatness at times.
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot to worry about here.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: And with the way you defended the Wyoming quarterback in the run, Bo Nicks can do that exact same thing, and he's better.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: So it it's something that it's something to touch on.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: You're really gonna have to step up in your pass rush and fill in your gaps and your interior defensive linemen, your linebackers.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: This is gonna be a huge, huge step for them that they need to take to stop this Oregon offense.
- 40:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: Um, I I think this is gonna be a down-to-the-wire game, man.
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: I think I think we're talking about a game that's gonna be decided by three points or a little bit more.
- 40:28SPEAKER_04: So I I think this is gonna be a slug fest.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: Oh, hopefully, we'll be.
- 40:33SPEAKER_04: Hopefully, you know, hopefully we're able to play up to that level of competition because you know, or obviously Oregon has their eyes on the Pac-12 championship plus playoff intentions.
- 40:41SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, dude, I I think I think obviously the first thing you look at is is can your defense slow them down?
- 40:47SPEAKER_04: I I would like to have faith that our dudes are a little better than the Vikings of Portland State.
- 40:54SPEAKER_04: So uh hopefully that the this talent um gap is uh is filled enough to stop them enough.
- 41:01SPEAKER_04: And plus you have the the rowdy Red Raider loyal in Jones ATT Stadium sold-out crowd uh to hopefully get into their heads a bit because then they were able to easily do that comfortably in their in their hometown of Eugene.
- 41:12SPEAKER_04: So now we got the longer road trip on them, and hopefully that makes a difference.
- 41:15SPEAKER_04: Hopefully that can get them off balance a bit.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: This is a Texas Tech team that lost one time at home last year.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: Sometimes people forget that.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: It was a bad home loss against Baylor, but it was only one home loss.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: So you play well when you're in Lubbock, and that's a point of emphasis for this coaching staff is playing well in front of your home fans.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: It's a small thing to do.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: It's how you keep the fan base engaged and going to the games and being happy.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: This is a sell-out crowd.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: It's a night game in the Jones.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: It's big boy Fox.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: You have a lot going for you, and you're gonna have a lot of eyes on you.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it's disappointing to be 0-1 going into this game, but this is a brand new week with this game has all the opportunity in the world to boost your stock.
- 41:55SPEAKER_04: I will say I really do like the spread heading into this game.
- 41:58SPEAKER_04: It looks like Vegas has more faith in us than some of perhaps a portion of our fan base at this point.
- 42:03SPEAKER_04: Um, only six and a half, so they're all they're only favored by you know to win by seven points.
- 42:08SPEAKER_04: And I I I'll take that all day.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: I was worried to wake up to find a spread that was ludicrous that was like, oh, they expect us to get slammed, but it doesn't seem like the case at all.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: So I do like that going in.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: Obviously, Vegas numbers don't say the whole story because obviously we're supposed to beat uh the Cowboys by like 16 points according to recording to Vegas, but um, I obviously those guys they don't bet their money stupidly.
- 42:29SPEAKER_04: So um I I kind of like that spread.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm okay with the spread.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Uh I just I want to see how this team responds.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: This has been like I like I tried to mention earlier in the podcast, this what's next mentality that we've had in this program and hopefully instilled in a lot of these guys who are now going into the second year of being a Joey McGuire coach player.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: So you want to go into this week not letting Wyoming beat you twice.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: That was something cool that Joey said in the presser.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: Don't let them beat you again, don't let that the stink of that loss carry over into the second week.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, it just doesn't make any sense to do that.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: It it's only bad if you have that mentality.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: So you do have a lot of young guys that play legitimate snaps that I hope that carries over with them.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: I think it is going to carry over with some of our senior led guys, and you hope that mentality carries over with the entire team.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: You couldn't ask for a better get back on schedule opportunity in front of you.
- 43:28SPEAKER_04: Like if you want to get everybody immediately back on board and make sure the Jones is sold out for the rest of the year, you go and win this game.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: Like the Wyoming's gone whenever you win this game.
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: Everyone will forget about it, no one will bring it up.
- 43:39SPEAKER_04: It'll just be kind of like a head scratcher uh a few games down the road.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: So it's also halfway it's also something it's also something where you look at fourth and seven and be like, if that play doesn't happen, you beat Wyoming and you're two and oh, you know.
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: So it's uh there's you have a great opportunity here to just change the complete narrative of what's going on with your program right now.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: No, 100%.
- 44:01SPEAKER_04: And it's like like we keep saying, it's it's a perfect time to get the fans back into it because it's at the end of the day, you fans want to see their team win.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: And some sloss, some losses are excusable, others are not.
- 44:13SPEAKER_04: And the last night, a couple nights ago, is more so in the inexcusable loss category than it is in an acceptable loss category.
- 44:19SPEAKER_04: So it's kind of in this middle gray area.
- 44:21SPEAKER_04: But just like if you want to, you know, hush everybody up and get us, get everybody recommitted immediately, you got to go win the games.
- 44:26SPEAKER_04: So you couldn't ask for a better opportunity to uh get everything laser focused back on the prize.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: What do you need from Tyler Shuck to win this game?
- 44:37SPEAKER_04: Confidence.
- 44:38SPEAKER_04: I think you need more of the gamble and Tyler Tyler Shuck that you brought up earlier.
- 44:43SPEAKER_04: I think you need a guy that's not gonna be afraid to take chances because I think we're gonna have to take chances to win this game.
- 44:47SPEAKER_04: I think Oregon's gonna be better than you at pretty much every single position.
- 44:51SPEAKER_04: And you need to do you need to show some balls.
- 44:53SPEAKER_04: He needs to show some guts to win this game.
- 44:55SPEAKER_04: And I think Tyler Shuck has to show some freaking guts, take some shots downfield, um, run, you use your legs when you need to smartly, and take care of the ball.
- 45:03SPEAKER_04: And please don't slip on nothing again.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Please don't slip on the line.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: I I can't stress that enough.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, you need confidence, you need just that effort mindset from him.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: You really do.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: That's how you beat Oklahoma last year, that's how you beat Ole Miss last year.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: You just had Tyler Shuck going out there and playing football.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: You didn't have him overthinking himself, you didn't have him checking his mechanics and getting balls batted down.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: You just had Tyler Shuck playing what Tyler Shuck football, which is what he needs to do.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: He doesn't need to be hesitant out there.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: And I think the other position groups, you need consistency.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: You obviously need improvement in pass uh protection or in uh uh run protection.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: You need to get Taj Brooks involved.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: That guy's too good to have the stat line that he did against Wyoming.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: You can't have 39 yards from Taj Brooks.
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: If it's getting him involved in the pass game, great.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: He's such a playmaker that you need to get him involved.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: Um I'd like to see the tight ends get more involved.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: I would.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: I think that's a you had a great pass, second touchdown of the game to Jaden York, who went up there and got that thing.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: That was fantastic.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: The only other guy who caught a ball on in the tight end room was Mason Thart for one catch.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Baylor Cup, no catches.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: Henry Teeter wasn't involved.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: You need to get these guys involved.
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: They're too good to only have three catches, you know.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: Um utilize your receivers.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: You got away from Miles Price after that first drive of the game.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: I'd like to see him involved.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: I'd like to see Dre McCrae given the opportunity to maybe juke some guys out and get in the open field.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: I thought you threw to Jaron Bradley a good amount, but continue to do that.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: He's one of your best receivers.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Just share the ball, share the rock.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: Um get the pass game involved.
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, keep the ducks guessing, you know.
- 46:55SPEAKER_04: But I hope Kitley's busting out a really creative playbook to uh keep um Oregon on their heels.
- 47:00SPEAKER_04: Obviously, there's kind of the criticism of that.
- 47:02SPEAKER_04: Do you try to play two vanilla against game one against a team like Wyoming and perhaps they came and bit us in the back at the end of the day?
- 47:07SPEAKER_04: Um, and I hope that's just not the case when it comes to uh Oregon.
- 47:10SPEAKER_04: I hope every I hope the play calling is gutsy, like I said, the what we need from Tyler Shuck.
- 47:15SPEAKER_04: Um, and like I feel like we bring up we need to get the tight ends involved more often, pretty much every single game.
- 47:21SPEAKER_04: I mean, it is kind of crazy that you know you have these guys that tower over anybody that's trying to cover them, and it should just be kind of like uh you just throw it up there and he'll be there and he'll snag it out of the sky, you know, just because he's already tall enough to be in the sky.
- 47:34SPEAKER_04: Um, but I I do think I know it's kind of basic to say, and we've spent a lot of episodes talking about him.
- 47:40SPEAKER_04: I think this game rides and dies with Tyler Shuck because I think all eyes are gonna be on him due to this.
- 47:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, we try not to bring outside factors like his re his old team returning to town, but that's gonna matter.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: Like, how is that gonna affect our quarterback?
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: Is that gonna make him a better player or is that gonna psych him out?
- 47:59SPEAKER_04: And I think that we'll we will ride and die with what happens in his head in this in this game.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we can start talking about Barron Morton after this game, okay?
- 48:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because uh I don't want to hear it.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: I don't want to hear it with the backup quarterback.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: I just don't.
- 48:12SPEAKER_01: I I think Morton's a great player.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: I don't think he needs to start this game.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: I think uh Tyler Shuck is also tremendously talented, but needs to have a better mindset and just needs to play better overall because he's got it in him that he can play well.
- 48:25SPEAKER_01: We've seen it.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: We don't need to go to Barron Morton, we just don't, and going to him already saying that the first game of the season is ridiculous.
- 48:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 48:33SPEAKER_04: And according to the coaches, you know, Tyler Shuck's already trying to be a leader in the locker room post-loss, you know, bringing in everybody in and you know, taking the loss on their own on their own shoulders.
- 48:42SPEAKER_04: So I hope he can, you know, act like the leader he is, get out there and get it done because it's just what what this win would mean for the program is huge.
- 48:50SPEAKER_04: So I I really hope we can go out there and get the job done.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: Now, if you go down 21-0 early and your offense looks terrible and Chuck's throwing two pick sixes, okay, fine.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about it then.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: I don't think he's gonna start off bad.
- 49:02SPEAKER_01: I don't think I don't think he's going to play like what he did in Wyoming.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: I think he's gonna have a different mindset, and I'm I'm just a believer in him as a quarterback.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: So um, all right, man.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, did you have anything else on Oregon before we go into picks?
- 49:16SPEAKER_04: Nah, dude.
- 49:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, I just I mean, I'm excited to see us get back on track.
- 49:19SPEAKER_04: I am still excited to watch TechSech football.
- 49:21SPEAKER_04: I will be on my couch, ready to go Saturday night.
- 49:24SPEAKER_04: Excited as heck and looking forward to the potential of taking down a giant, man, rooting some playoff dreams.
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, bring that bring that atmosphere if you're going to the game.
- 49:32SPEAKER_01: I know a lot of you are.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: Go be loud, be ready, do the stripe out.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, participate.
- 49:37SPEAKER_01: I season's not over, it's just one game.
- 49:40SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 49:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, be there.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: Be there.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: Sell out.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: Picks.
- 49:47SPEAKER_01: Week one, we both did pretty good, as would expect when we're uh a lot of these teams are not playing anybody good.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: You did better than I.
- 49:55SPEAKER_01: 14 to 17 on the week for you, 12 of 17 for myself.
- 49:59SPEAKER_04: For the belief in the climb.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: The difference is the climb.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: And I fell victim to that was that was a bad pick.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: The other one was a bad pick.
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: It was a bad pick.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: There was a like a 5% chance that was gonna work out for me.
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: The 95% chance happened.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, West Virginia did not go into Happy Valley and win against Penn State.
- 50:20SPEAKER_04: Cooked.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: And I didn't get to see the ending of UTSA Houston.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: It was a pretty low-scoring game.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: Apparently, there was some questionable calls at the end, but that was again where we differed.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 50:31SPEAKER_04: I mean, that that that that makes that one makes sense.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: That one's more 50-50.
- 50:35SPEAKER_04: But honestly, dude, I we haven't even brought it up yet.
- 50:37SPEAKER_04: We had a tough night, but no one in the state had a night like Baylor fans did.
- 50:41SPEAKER_04: Oh, and they just they got outclassed by Texas State.
- 50:46SPEAKER_04: We slipped in Wyoming, they got dominated by Texas State, yeah, and it wasn't even fun.
- 50:51SPEAKER_04: That was Texas State's first ever power five win and a year one of a brand new coach at a school that is quite frankly not known for their football tradition, and they just clowned Baylor.
- 51:04SPEAKER_04: It was insane to see.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: You know who Baylor plays this week?
- 51:09SPEAKER_04: Who?
- 51:10SPEAKER_04: Utah.
- 51:12SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 51:13SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 51:14SPEAKER_04: I don't think that's an Oregon situation.
- 51:16SPEAKER_04: I don't think that's an Oregon situation.
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: It's in Waco.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: Uh let's talk about that game first, because I guess that's our first one here.
- 51:23SPEAKER_04: Let's let's do that one.
- 51:24SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 51:25SPEAKER_01: The only the only people that had a worse day than Texas Tech fans are Baylor fans.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: The Texas State loss, that's inexcusable.
- 51:31SPEAKER_04: Utah.
- 51:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was.
- 51:36SPEAKER_01: It was fantastic.
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: It was it was TCU versus the world on that one.
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: Everybody was going for Coach Brian.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, for sure.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: I had a ball watching that one.
- 51:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that was a great game.
- 51:45SPEAKER_01: Utah Baylor, who you got?
- 51:47SPEAKER_04: I'm going to Utah, dude.
- 51:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, had had yesterday gone differently, I think this would have been a tougher conversation.
- 51:52SPEAKER_04: But you don't get clowned on by the worst FPS team in Texas and or historically and bounce back and be a pack power like Utah, who's on a roll.
- 52:02SPEAKER_04: So Utah's Utah is gonna come in and get it done.
- 52:05SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying they're just gonna obliterate Baylor, but there's I don't see Utah losing.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think Baylor will play better.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: Some are excited that Blake Shapin is out two to three weeks now, and they're gonna have to throw in Sawyer Robertson.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: Baylor fans, not fans of Shapin, which is fair.
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: He hasn't really been fantastic.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: So I also have the Utes going into Baylor.
- 52:26SPEAKER_01: Don't know if Cam Risen's playing, but their backups played well enough against Florida for a win against Baylor.
- 52:31SPEAKER_04: Can I say one thing about Baylor before we move on?
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: What a head scratcher of a program.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: They're they're either like contending for a Big 12 championship or they are in the toilet, man.
- 52:40SPEAKER_04: Like being a tech fan is tough, but our floor has never been that bad.
- 52:46SPEAKER_04: Like a Baylor floor can get bad.
- 52:48SPEAKER_04: And I say it's just it's it's crazy to see, but they also win trophies, and we haven't been able to do so.
- 52:53SPEAKER_04: So it's just it's kind of a bizarre uh comparison between our programs.
- 52:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Randa won in what year two?
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: Baylor.
- 53:01SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, Matt Rule did kind of the same thing.
- 53:03SPEAKER_01: He won in year two after a terrible start, and uh it seems to be trending in the wrong direction for this.
- 53:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're they're they're having conversations about Randah now.
- 53:11SPEAKER_04: It's just that that that that game is completely unexcusable.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so uh poor Baylor.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, poor Joe.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: Look a little more excited for that game later on.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: Illinois at Kansas, second one to talk about.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: Illinois beat Toledo and barely.
- 53:29SPEAKER_01: Barely beat Toledo in their game one.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Kansas took care of business uh against whoever the hell they played.
- 53:35SPEAKER_04: And uh yeah, some FCS team.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: But Illinois going into going into Lawrence, who you got?
- 53:42SPEAKER_04: I got I got I got the Jayhawks here.
- 53:44SPEAKER_04: Um, I think it'll be a close game, but I think the Jayhawks are gonna prevail in Lawrence.
- 53:47SPEAKER_04: I think uh you Jayhawks got the job done against the FCS team, and Illinois struggled.
- 53:52SPEAKER_04: It was like a last minute scoring that saved Illinois uh to put over the Rockets.
- 53:57SPEAKER_04: Granted, the Rockets are a Mac favorite, but no matter what, you at home at Big Ten team should be crushing uh Toledo.
- 54:04SPEAKER_04: But it's uh it was a tight one.
- 54:05SPEAKER_04: So I'm going with Jayhawks.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: Jalen Daniels didn't play last week.
- 54:08SPEAKER_01: That was kind of a surprise.
- 54:09SPEAKER_01: He's uh dealing with some back tightness.
- 54:11SPEAKER_01: So if they have Jalen Daniels, I think they definitely take care of business.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: If they're playing with a backup, I'm not so sure.
- 54:16SPEAKER_01: Illinois whole the upset, but I'm gonna go Kansas.
- 54:19SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 54:19SPEAKER_04: Good pick.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 54:21SPEAKER_01: Um Troy at Kansas State.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: Who you got?
- 54:25SPEAKER_04: Tricky one.
- 54:25SPEAKER_04: Uh Kansas State always plays it close with their G5 teams.
- 54:30SPEAKER_04: They every single year it seems to be so.
- 54:32SPEAKER_04: But I think Kansas State is gonna prevail.
- 54:34SPEAKER_04: Uh in Manhattan, they seem way too talented to screw this up at home.
- 54:38SPEAKER_04: Uh Bills on the road, perhaps we're having a different conversation.
- 54:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, but no, I think Kansas State does it.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: Troy beat Stephen F.
- 54:45SPEAKER_01: Austin last week in their opener uh of the fun belt.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: Um I'll go K-State.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: I I do agree that Kansas State seems to struggle in these games, obviously losing to Tulane last year, who did end up being a pretty great team last year.
- 54:58SPEAKER_04: A really good team, yeah.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: Um I'm gonna go Kansas State, just it being in Manhattan, I mean coming off a big win against a terrible team.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I'll go I'll go K-State as well.
- 55:07SPEAKER_04: Are we even still here at three?
- 55:09SPEAKER_04: Same picks.
- 55:10SPEAKER_04: What's gonna differentiate us?
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: A lot of week two, week three, non-conference.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: You know, you're gonna you're gonna get these for sure.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: Uh this is another one.
- 55:18SPEAKER_01: Southern Utah at BYU, uh two o'clock.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: BYU.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: Let's get past this, BYU.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:23unknown: All right.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: But BYU struggled against Sam Houston, dude.
- 55:26SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 55:27SPEAKER_04: What was the final score?
- 55:28SPEAKER_04: 14-0 or something?
- 55:29SPEAKER_04: Was it?
- 55:30SPEAKER_04: Yes, it was low, dude.
- 55:32SPEAKER_04: It was a low scoring game.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: I that game was happening at the same time.
- 55:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 14-0.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Keaton Slovis, not a great opener for them.
- 55:42SPEAKER_04: No, so BYU has some issues at offense, it seems.
- 55:45SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I'm still gonna go with this is not a conversation, yeah.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: Even though Southern Utah gave Arizona State a little run for their money, but Arizona State's a lot of money.
- 55:52SPEAKER_04: Arizona State's a mess.
- 55:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're a mess.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: So that you know, let's move on.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: Rivalry game, hornbowl, Iowa at Iowa State.
- 56:02SPEAKER_03: Ooh.
- 56:04SPEAKER_04: Okay, this one, this one's a little spicier, dude.
- 56:07SPEAKER_04: Um I hate to do this, but I I I'm gonna go Iowa here.
- 56:12SPEAKER_04: I think I just think Iowa's defense is too good, and Iowa State is just too question marky right now to really discuss this.
- 56:17SPEAKER_04: Iowa's defense uh offense is buns.
- 56:19SPEAKER_04: So if I was taken score managed to score like 24 points, they win.
- 56:23SPEAKER_04: But I don't know if they're able to do it.
- 56:24SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go Iowa.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: I'll be different.
- 56:28SPEAKER_01: Okay, cool.
- 56:28SPEAKER_01: I'll go with the I'll go with the clones here.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: I think uh they surprised they were playing a terrible team in we well in northern Iowa.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I classify them as terrible, but they played up, they played a extra.
- 56:41SPEAKER_01: A lot of people thought that they were gonna cover northern Iowa and they didn't.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: And props to Iowa State for that.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: Go go clones.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: Iowa, I think, is a little they showed a trace of an offense in week one, which is something they never do.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: So people are kind of getting hyped a little bit.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: They're like, oh my god, they scored 24 points, 36 points.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: Let's go crazy for Iowa.
- 57:04SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna go with the clones.
- 57:08SPEAKER_04: Okay, sweet.
- 57:09SPEAKER_04: Got some difference here.
- 57:10SPEAKER_04: Obviously, I do want the Cyclones to win that game, obviously.
- 57:12SPEAKER_04: But nah, I I I think I think Iowa's gonna be a little too much for him at this point.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: That's a fair that's fair.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: Duquesne at the climb, West Virginia.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: Who you got?
- 57:23SPEAKER_04: Well, I feel like well, it's just weird as I feel like West Virginia is always playing Duquesne, but um uh I'm gonna go with a climb.
- 57:31SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go the climb.
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: This is their one non-conference game where they're not playing an awesome team.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: So yeah, uh, they'll get a break.
- 57:37SPEAKER_01: Neil Brown.
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 57:40SPEAKER_01: They're usually pretty good, but I don't know how good they're supposed to be this year.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: But they won the ACC two years ago, didn't they?
- 57:46SPEAKER_04: So yeah, but Pitt does weird stuff like that every once in a while.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll see.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: Um, no, I'm taking West Virginia.
- 57:53SPEAKER_01: SMU at Oklahoma.
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: This is another interesting one.
- 57:57SPEAKER_01: Uh SMU coming off a pretty good trouncing of Sonny Cumby's La Tech Bulldogs sad last week.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: It was sad, it sucked to see.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: They were kind of in it for a little bit and then SMU just took off.
- 58:07SPEAKER_01: OU dismantled Butch Jones and the Arkansas State Red Wolves 73 to nothing last week.
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: Uh SMU at OU, who you got?
- 58:17SPEAKER_04: Dude, I this one I I'm kind of teetering here.
- 58:21SPEAKER_04: You you go first.
- 58:22SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go OU.
- 58:23SPEAKER_04: I you're gonna go OU?
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's hard to judge when you're playing a team like Arkansas State who is clearly not well prepared and just not even close.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: But uh I think SMU's solid.
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: I don't think this game's gonna be a blowout, but I do still have OU taking it.
- 58:39SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 58:39SPEAKER_04: I I'm I'm gonna take OU in a close one.
- 58:42SPEAKER_04: Um this one's a little more interesting than I think people expect.
- 58:45SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so too.
- 58:47SPEAKER_01: Um, Cincinnati at Pitt.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: Who you got?
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: Ooh, okay.
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this one's different.
- 58:53SPEAKER_04: Um, you know what?
- 58:55SPEAKER_04: I I how about I'm how about I go a little crazy with this one?
- 58:58SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go Big 12 Homer here.
- 59:00SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go with Cincinnati.
- 59:01SPEAKER_04: Um let's say Cincinnati surprises Pitt because apparently they're they're playing better than people expected right now, and I think they're gonna get in and surprise Pitt early.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: Since he played a terrible team in week one, um, but they did take care of business.
- 59:13SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure what Pitt did in their week one, but I am going to take Pitt and stick to the prediction.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, Pitt beat Wafford 45 to 7.
- 59:23SPEAKER_01: So can't take really anything.
- 59:26SPEAKER_01: Wafford, what are they, the Terriers?
- 59:28SPEAKER_01: The Terriers.
- 59:29SPEAKER_01: Um I'm taking Pitt.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna take Pitt.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 59:33SPEAKER_01: All right, Texas traveling to Tuscaloosa.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: Bammer?
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: To play Bama.
- 59:42SPEAKER_04: Dude, I'm not picking Texas.
- 59:43SPEAKER_04: Move on.
- 59:44SPEAKER_04: I don't, I'm not gonna discuss this.
- 59:46SPEAKER_04: Alabama.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: I am also taking the Crimson Tide.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: Texas, despite a good win, I mean, what, 33-3 or whatever against Rice.
- 59:56SPEAKER_04: A pride, a proud program like Rice.
- 59:58SPEAKER_01: I watched a lot of that game.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: Texas didn't impress me.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_01: They didn't.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: Their red zone offense was not very good.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: They obviously have some talented players.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: Their defense played pretty solid against the bad Rice team.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: JT Daniels is a bad quarterback.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_01: Sorry, he's bad.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: He looked really bad in that game.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_04: So he just didn't trust the climb.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_04: He's not with the Mountaineers anymore.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: JT Daniels and uh non-trust climber, non-climb truster.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: Um Alabama's gonna beat Texas at Duscaloosa.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_01: If this doesn't happen, I'm gonna be upset.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_04: But I hope they obliterate them.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: I hope they pound them to dust.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: Houston, speaking of rice, Houston at rice, rivalry game.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: Who is going to run the city of Houston?
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_01: The bayou bucket.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_01: Houston traveling very far.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_01: Very good.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_04: A whole like 10 miles.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_04: Who you got?
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go cougs.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_04: Uh Rice stinks.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: Rice stinks.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_04: U of H isn't great, but Rice stinks, dude.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_01: JT Daniels sucks.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_04: They have a hater of the climb, and I'm not gonna trust anybody that doesn't trust the climb.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: JT Daniels has an all-time shook face.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: Every time he goes three and out, he just looks like he would be anywhere else in the world than playing football.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_04: I know this is like super lowbrow, and we doesn't really need to be said on a podcast, but he's not a handsome man.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: No, he's not.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_01: He's not.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_04: He's not.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_01: So you don't have to be handsome.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_04: This is a weird looking one.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: You don't have to be handsome to play quarterback, but it definitely helps.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_01: It helps, yeah.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_04: Tyler Shuck's got it.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_01: He's got it.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: He's a good looking guy.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_01: Um, UCF and Boise.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_01: This is another interesting week, too.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_04: This is you that this is an interesting one.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_01: Who you got?
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: Um, you know what?
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_04: Uh I was actually pretty impressed with what I saw with UCF.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_04: They they dominated Kent.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_04: I like Kent stinks, but like that's they they there was no doubt from the from the first nap.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_04: Um, but this one's tough.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go Boise State.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_04: I think Boise State is going to shock UCF.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_04: I think because I think UCF's probably feeling a little too cocky heading into the blue field.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_04: And I think Boise's gonna start their season off right.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_04: They're Mount West favorites, and I think they're gonna get their campaign off to a good start.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_04: Slight set setback for UCF.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_04: I think they have a decent year otherwise.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_01: I am also agreeing with you.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_01: I think Boise is gonna take it.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: The home field I think is gonna give him a huge advantage.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: It always does over there with the blue field.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: UCF made some mistakes against Kent.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_01: I wasn't like thrilled with them.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_01: I think Plumley played pretty good, but he also fumbled through a couple picks, I think.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_04: A little turnover prone.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a little turnover prone.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go Boise State here um as well.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_01: Moving on, a couple quick hitters.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: Nichols State at TCU.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_01: Does TCU bounce back?
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think they bounce back, bro.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: I think so too.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_04: Hey, no, no shame to ETCU dropping to Colorado.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_04: I mean, Colorado came out.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: Colorado was electric, and we'll talk about them because we're gonna hit on their game here in a bit.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_01: But um, let's move to the last Big 12 game, Oklahoma State at Arizona State.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: A another look into the new Big 12.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_01: Obviously, Arizona State struggling.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: We talked about it last week.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: So is OSC.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_01: Oklahoma State did not look fantastic.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_01: I did not see any of that game because it was kind of going on safe.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: I was mostly locked into UTSA Houston, but um a couple QBs played.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_01: Um Wrangle, I believe, started and played the first few drives.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: Bowman got in, and then I believe Gundy also got in.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: So interesting.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: I don't know who their quarterback is going into this one.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: I think it's Wrangle, but we'll see.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_04: Uh Arizona, if if Arizona State wasn't in the shape it is, I would say that this is a more interesting game to talk about.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_04: But I think this is such a wash of a year for Arizona State in every way that I don't see how the pokes go in and lose in Timpe.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: I'll go with the Cowboys.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_04: Even with the questions.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_01: Yep, no doubt.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_01: Arizona traveling to Stark Vegas, playing Mississippi State.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: Arizona Lockheed game.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_01: Mississippi State did not look good last week.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_01: They played very tight to a terrible team.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_01: Arizona took care of business against they played last week.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_01: I can't remember off the top of my head, but they killed them.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_04: Who you got?
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_04: Arizona's on the up, man.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think they're a more solid program than uh people are giving them credit for.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_04: I think they're gonna go and upset.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_04: Uh maybe it's probably not an upset, but I think they're gonna go and uh quiet the crowd in Starksville.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I also chose Arizona here.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_01: Mississippi State did not look good in that week one.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go off that.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_04: It's it's year one for a new coach, right?
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_04: So well, yeah, because you know I I I I couldn't remember when he when he passed.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_01: Um all right, last game to talk about before we give our tech Oregon predictions.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_01: Nebraska at Colorado.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_04: Uh oh, I'm going Colorado all day.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_04: All day.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_04: Nebraska is a basket case.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_04: I don't know what's wrong with that, that, that program, but it can't ever find anything ever.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_04: And I think I think Colorado is gonna be packed in boulder, and it's gonna be going nut so.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_04: I I think Colorado wins.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_04: And it's probably gonna be it's probably not gonna be close like it was against CCU.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_04: I bet I bet it's a few possessions.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: Look, we had a bad week one.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_01: Baylor had a bad week one.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: Nobody is more spurned than the Nebraska Cornhusker fan base after watching this football for the last 20 years.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_04: What a disaster that Minnesota game was.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_01: It was so funny, it was so funny, it was perfect.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: I like I don't I don't hate Nebraska.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_01: Neither do I, but it's just so funny every year to see the new ways that they lose football games.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_04: That this this like super proud ex blue blood.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_04: I I think we need to start reconsidering who's a blue blood.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_04: And yeah, like obviously, it's it is always funny to watch a team that bailed the Big 12 suck ass.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_04: And I don't know if any team has truly sucked the ass in funny ways than Nebraska.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_04: Like Colorado's been boo boo boo boo, but yeah, it's that it's it's not the same sort of level of.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: program.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: So it's been really funny to watch Nebraska flounder in every way possible.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_01: It is it is funny.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_01: I think Colorado continues with the prime momentum.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_01: Skidur was awesome.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_01: He was Travis Hunter is a a dude.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_01: He's a dude.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_01: That guy is he played 120 snaps in that last game.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_01: There's no way that's sustainable for the whole year.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: But man, is it fun to watch?
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_01: And it's going to be fun to watch for the first couple weeks until he ultimately probably gets hurt, which is I hope he doesn't, but you don't play that much football and not then something not happen to you.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_04: They are the timeline to watch this year, man.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_04: And I am so excited to have them in the Big 12 to have Coach Prime in that team in the Big 12.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_04: I just think it's gonna be so fun to watch every week.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_04: So yeah I'm watching their career with great interest.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: Definitely definitely I will buy I'll go Colorado here you will as well all right we mentioned it Oregon visiting Lubbock 6 pm Fox Oregon six and a half point favorites.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_04: Win or loss and then do they cover I'm gonna go win I'm gonna go win this is a really reluctant win for me.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna lie it had this had we been doing this a couple weeks ago I'd be like oh it's upset city I'm gonna reluctantly say win.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_04: Uh you know it's it's impossible to go into full confidence but I I just something inside of me is saying we're bouncing back Saturday and we're gonna upset the ducks but I don't have that same sort of level of confidence I did before but I'm going winning and no we don't cover it's gonna be barely I hate how we played last week obviously Oregon scares the shit out of me now more so than preseason.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: Oh wait no we that would mean we cover sorry no we wouldn't cover the other way around no you're you're I think it's gonna be a better showing I think Texas Tech is going to come out and be competitive in this game I think Oregon's gonna win I don't think there's any your mind is changed it's it's tough.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_04: I I you can't lose to Wyoming and then me expect you to beat Oregon I just don't so I hope I'm wrong I hope that I think that Texas Tech is going to play good and I think that they are going to be competitive in this game and and probably cover but I don't expect them to beat the ducks no ouch my heart I I you know my brain is saying that but like I said there's just something in my gut that says our boys are going to bounce back in a good way um but it's gonna be tight it's gonna be to the last whistle I love it I love it I hope you're right and I hope that we actually smoke them and it's not even close.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_04: So God man everything's changed at that point I really I really hope we were caught sleeping at the wheel in Wyoming and we just hadn't woken up and we're waking up Saturday.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_04: That's that's my that's my prayer.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_01: I agree I hope it's I hope that is the case as well and I hope that we get this season turned around and ready to roll going into Tarleton.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_04: So what a fun episode Steven fun episode let's end off with another fun note for our song of the week uh really unfortunate thing that took place to start off the first college football the first real college football Saturday uh Jimmy Buffett passed away kind of unexpectedly I would assume from he was only 76 obviously lived the uh the life that he did of consuming lots of alcohol and partying a lot and just giving off the funnest of vibes um it it kind of hit it hit me kind of hard i i think uh you know normally celebrity deaths don't really get to me that much but uh you know jimmy's a legend and uh it was pretty unexpected and it was really unfortunate uh before college football saturday the dude's an icon he like single-handedly carved out a niche in music that just wasn't there before yeah you had reggae yeah you had countries and rock but you didn't have someone that blended all those together into like a really consumable form that he did that made it accessible for any listener to relate to and have fun with and he just he really created a whole community of parrot heads as they're called that just loved his music and his lifestyle and just a huge impact on on the art music industry and culture itself it hurt it it hurt man um I've been to the three of his concerts and they're the most fun I've ever had at a music event they are a blast to be at and it's just heartbreaking knowing that those are done and but he really leaves behind a legacy that is unmatched in the music world it's it's rare where you find a legend like him and uh it's just it's no one's gonna be another Jimmy Buffett.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah well said so I think both of us are gonna give a Jimmy Buffett song here for our song of the week um in remembrance for uh uh icon legend like you said everything um everything you said so uh who what is your jimmy buffett song of the week my jimmy buffett song of the week it's it's one of the more common ones more popular ones um but what I really like about the song is it shows his songwriting muscle yes he's really good at writing fun songs um party songs some would argue that those are a little easier to write than the real stuff that hits so I think this would shut up anybody that says he can't do that because this song is a pirate looks at 40 I think that is just such an amazing self-reflective song that really you know a lot of people can relate to it in the middle of their life and looking back and looking forward and I I I think it's just a beautiful song about aging and I I think it's a really great uh song right by him yes I am a pirate 200 years too late the cannons don't thunder there's nothing to blunder I love who report a victim of fate very nice obviously great song by him Pirate Looks at 40 um my song of the week is going to be Trip Around the Sun Jimmy Buffett and Martina McBride this is kind of this kind of encapsulates like the entirety of Jimmy Buffett it's Martina McBride's great on it but this is just like you just think about Jimmy Buffett and his lifestyle and what he meant and what he tried to uh epitomize as an artist and this is the this is that song I mean trip around the sun you're just it's makes you feel good all time listen so that is that's my Jimmy Buffett song of the week Trip Around the Sun yes I'll make a resolution that'll never make another one just enjoy this ride on my trip around the sun I like that he threw in a duet I mean I think obviously the easy duet would have been five o'clock somewhere right um but uh El Zelza that's a great pick man a deep cut there's countless picks there's countless picks for this guy you could have picked cheeseburger in paradise or five o'clock somewhere the all timers but margarita margaritaville thought you give a a little something else but um rest in peace to Jimmy Buffett all timer 100% man well dude uh obviously not our favorite episodes record but at the same time it is it I've always say I always kind of say I know it's a serious coping mechanism but getting the first loss out of the way is kind of it's kind of freeing it in a way it is it's a little it's a little cathartic in the sense that like you don't have to worry about it anymore.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_04: Like you know you don't have to keep a perfect record.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_04: I know what a problem having a perfect record but um I like as a fan I won't be quite as nervous watching other games now.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: I really really want to beat Oregon because I want to get I want to get the narrative changed because right now it's not looking good for everybody talking about tech and we talked a lot of mess this offseason so let's uh let's let's change the tides a little bit so um looking forward to it we're gonna end it off though here you can follow both me and Tristan on twitter tristan's on at tristy mick i am at l underscore s underscore rodriguez follow the pod on twitter at talk at tech pod uh we also have an instagram now at talk at tech pod you can follow our songs a week playlist there on spotify and apple music and uh we really just appreciate y'all listening and always wreck em tech wreck em tech uh wow first of all uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan uh their program tough guys just uh a lot of fun this is wild when I walked in and I knew this would be an awesome podcast and these guys have been tremendous I love you and I can't wait for this journey I would like to thank uh Steven and Tristan this is incredible these guys have a passion and a love for this school
