- 0:00Welcome back to Storytime with Lucky Podcast. Today we're going to read Kipper's Beach Ball.
- 0:08One morning, as Kipper was pouring out his cornflakes, a thing dropped into
- 0:15his bowl, a colorful wriggly sort of thing.
- 0:19Kipper picked the thing up and looked at it. He sniffed it. He had a nice plasticky sort of smell.
- 0:28It was quite exciting, really, except that Kipa had no idea what the wrinkly,
- 0:37plasticky thing might be.
- 0:41He hurried go round to Tiger's house.
- 0:45I got a free gift in my cornflakes, he said.
- 0:48Tiger was unimpressed. Oh, I've been collecting them for weeks, he said.
- 0:54I already got the penguin rubber that goes on the end of your pencil.
- 1:01The wind-up shark that goes in the bath. And two jumpy frogs. They're just for fun.
- 1:10The only one I haven't thought yet is the ball. What's yours then?
- 1:15Keep helping the thing. It must be the ball. He said, it don't look much like a ball.
- 1:22It didn't look most like anything, I thought balls weren't supposed to be around the bounce, he said.
- 1:26He kept a bounce a thing, or rather he didn't, because the last thing he just
- 1:35hit the floor with a little flap and no bounce at all.
- 1:40And it laid him looking colourful but useless.
- 1:46That, that's when, that's when Kipper, it was when they discovered the nozzle. Oh, said Tiger.
- 1:55You're meant to blow this up. It's just not, this isn't just an ordinary ball.
- 2:00It's a beach ball. He started to blow it up. He blew and blew and blew until he began.
- 2:08Gideon, Kipper had to take over. Slowly, the wrinkly, plasticky thing turned
- 2:13into the fastest Chinese beach ball they had ever seen.
- 2:21Wow! Wow! said Kipper. He bounced the ball as hard as he could. Wow! said Tiger.
- 2:29Where could you take a beach ball? To the beach, of course.
- 2:33And that's what they did. Kipper was so excited as they reached the cliff dock.
- 2:39He forgot how the windy cliff tops are through the ball up into the air.
- 2:47This was a mistake. The wind grabbed the ball and whisked it away.
- 2:52It sailed high out over the beach, circling in the air, making the seagulls
- 2:59spork. Then it dropped down.
- 3:03Onto the hard sand and bounced off again, spinning faster and faster away from them.
- 3:12Stop, called Kipper, chasing down the cliff steps.
- 3:17The ball rushed away. It looked and bounced unskilled along the beach,
- 3:21knocking the top off of Sandcastle.
- 3:26It's a sea.
- 3:28And just as it seemed that would never, never stop, the sea grabbed it,
- 3:34and for a moment it stopped spinning,
- 3:39as if to catch a breath, before a wave washed up to the beach and sucked it onto the surf.
- 3:47Come back, shouted Kipper. But by the time Kipper and Tiger reached the water's
- 3:54edge, the ball was bobbing far out among the waves. Come back!
- 4:03And strangely, the ball seemed to do as it was told.
- 4:09For that moment, a great breaking wave came looming up.
- 4:15Behind it flicked up to his nose like a seal and began to and bring bring and
- 4:22began bringing it back to the beach it's coming it's coming three times get ready gibber,
- 4:30there was no time to get ready gibber just hurl hurl hurled himself at before,
- 4:38as the wave crashed onto the beach he grabbed and disappeared and in a A great
- 4:44splash of foam and water went over the sound of waves.
- 4:51And of the tumbling of the tibbles and of the bubbling in the water in his ears.
- 4:58Kipper heard another sound, a faint, and he felt something collapse underneath him.
- 5:05As Kipper lifted his beach ball out of the water, it seemed to give a sigh and
- 5:10slowly became a wrinkly thing again.
- 5:14He said to Tiger, it sort of died, he said to Tiger, which made them both a laugh.
- 5:27They tried blowing it up again, but the big split on one side let the air out
- 5:34as fast as they could blow.
- 5:37Kepa noticed that it smelled more plasticky than ever, which for some reason,
- 5:44had made him feel suddenly sad.
- 5:47We could always buy some more cornflakes, suggested Tiger.
- 5:52So they hurried home to buy more cornflakes and ran all the way to Kipper's
- 6:00house with six whole boxes.
- 6:02They entered straight onto the floor, but.
- 6:07All they found was three penguin rubbers, two wind-up sharks,
- 6:12one jumpy frog, and lots of cornflakes.
- 6:17Over the next three weeks, Kipper ate nothing but cornflakes.
- 6:22Cornflakes for breakfast and cornflakes for dinner too.
- 6:27But there was no beach ball in the end, Kipper stopped looking.
- 6:32Even so, each new bar, each time he gets a new box of cornflakes,
- 6:40Kipper snitched the box before opening it, Just in case there's a nice plasticky
- 6:45sour smell coming from inside.
- 6:48The end and thank you for listening.
