- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, this got started with uh an influencer that admitted what was her name again?
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: Uh Alex Earl.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: Alex Earl, thank you.
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: Uh Alex uh had admitted she's never really read a book other than like Dr.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: Seuss.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: Now, I'm I'm wondering if part of that also comes from the fact it just is not something she enjoys occupying her time with.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: Not that she can't read, that's a different story.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: I'm saying she just may not find the joy in that that some people do.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, after you get assigned books, because of course when you grew up, you were reading something like, you know, Watership Down or whatever you're the great gas beyond.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know what you were assigned to in school, but once you get past that, then it it kind of drops off, it seems like it can be.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: And then Paul Pony Joe said, okay, and and I this I can relate to.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: He goes, Well, I can relate to it, but I can also understand.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: This is a great statement.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: He goes, I have ADHD.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: I find it difficult to sit down and read a book.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: That makes sense to me, and I understand that your mind is doing a million different things at one time.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: So you're never really absorbing it because your mind is like bing bing bing bing bing.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: And you're not enjoying the act of it, which is probably, I mean, I'm I'm not but I'm gonna freely admit this.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm of a generation where ADHD was treated like this.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Listen! That's how it was treated, you know?
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, I likely have uh a pretty good scale of it, but here's the difference.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: I was able somewhere in my life to channel that.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: And if you could see the juggling act that actually happens in the studio every day, you would be like, oh, oh, he found a way to channel what he has.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: I think that's what helps it though, is that you have a lot of things going at once.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Because after the show, sometimes it gets a little wonky.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna lie, that's true.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Now then it moved in.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: I'm like a air traffic controller.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Over here, Scott.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, land the plane over here.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Be blessed you don't have that.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: So just sit there and read a book.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: It's not that bad.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Um, so that being said, it moved into the different things that you are shocked someone can't do or a significant other, whatever, or a friend.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: And somebody had said cursive.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're always shocked to hear when people say they have never learned how to write and read cursive.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: And you were talking about Gavin signing something the other day.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna come back to that specifically in a minute.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Go ahead and play what you got here from uh yeah.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Morning.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Just want to say that they 100% teach cursive, at least um, in Corning Paint and Post School District.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: It starts in third grade and they continue in fourth grade.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And then some teachers still do it in fifth grade, so they definitely still teach cursive.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: Okay, so I'm gonna tell you something because you wouldn't know this because it sounds like your kids might be younger.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: So my 25-year-old daughter went to a couple of the Corning Painted Post schools.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: Now you have to go back to elementary.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: This is almost 20 years ago.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: They were not teaching it.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I think there was that time that they stopped and then they picked it back up.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: And unfortunately, Gavin kind of also fell in that time period where they weren't doing it.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: And depending on the district, too, in which schools.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Right, because he doesn't know how to sign his name.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: He actually asked me that because we were we were doing the normal physicals on uh, you know, Friday, and they hand him some forms.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Now, of course I'm gonna help.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: He's 12 years old.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: This is the first time he's been handed forms.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: So you walk him through it and then some of those questions.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: Wow, for a 12-year-old.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Uh and he goes, Well, they want me to sign here.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: I said, and he kind of gave me that look like, What?
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: What what just write your name?
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, this G squiggles.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Just write your name, which is fine.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Because I know it's like, well, what do you do when you get to this point in life?
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: You have to sign something.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: But you don't know how.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Well, if you don't have a computer in front of you to auto-generate it, G Squiggles.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: But also his rap name.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: I love that, G Squiggles.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Me too.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: But coming off that, I'm at a phase with Gavin where I there's something in New York State I'm not a fan of.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: And her name's not Hokel.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: That was too great, huh?
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Um, he took the opening.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: But uh here's the thing.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: We have a law where at 12 years old the parameters for parents change.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: I had to call uh and get myself re-added to his digital chart so that I could like send messages and do things.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: So there's stages where they free the kids up.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: Now, believe me, there there comes a point, maybe after 16 or or even older.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: 16, yeah.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, where sure, you can have those private times with your doctor.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: And you know what?
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: There's gonna come a point where I'm not even gonna go back with you.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: You're gonna go back and do your thing.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: But right now, I think that's the right thing.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: But right now, at 12 years old, I think we got this wrong.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: I I'm sorry, I need, and maybe it's just me.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think it is.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: So explain what he was signing.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: He had to sign all these different forms.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Questionnaires like, when was the last time you used alcohol?
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: I'm like, well, that would have been in the womb, son.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Um but uh what uh so that there was the opening, he took it.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: And again, uh, but that uh but all these questions and stuff like that.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: And then once I was able to call and get myself re-added to the parameters of like his e-chart so I could message the doctor and stuff, I'm like, okay, that then I'm alright with that.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: I don't love this law.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: I think they push back when you asked to get added.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: No, they actually they were but I found out I actually had to call the admin department for the like e-charts and stuff like that.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: And they're like, oh, okay, and you know, explain who I was and my you know.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: I don't love the 12.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: So what are you gonna be fine with 16 or older?
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: But at 12, I as a parent feel like I should still 100% have all the say and all the access.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: So let's not that I want to picture this whatsoever because Gavin is still like a little baby in my mind, but he's not.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: He's 12.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: But anyway, let's say he's 17 and become sexually active.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: And he says, I he's not telling you that part, he just says, I want to get off of I want you to get off of my digital portal.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: Is that gonna raise a red flag for you?
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Like, well No, because I'm from an era where you communicate with your kids and you basically try to share and express to them, share back.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: You know, I mean, at some point, and damn you woman, I'm not ready for this.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: I know I'm not either.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: At some point, I would want him to feel free and open enough.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Well, you know what?
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna do exactly what my mother did.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna lie.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna drive him nuts.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna tell him never do drugs because this is a Betty line.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: The first time you try it, it can kill you.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: This is how my mother made me not do it.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: She used the best Catholic guilt in the world on me.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: And you know, never do it.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: And if the because you never know, somebody gives you something somewhere, whatever, the first time you can die.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna use the Madonna tactic.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Don't be silly, rap that willy.
