- 0:09Eric: Okay, Sidney, we're here to talk Mystery Island.
- 0:13Eric: We've been waiting.
- 0:14Eric: Are you going to be buying your plane ticket and making a reservation at Mystery Island?
- 0:23Sydney: I don't know, eric, it seems a little too deadly for me.
- 0:26Sydney: This is Eric and this is Sidney.
- 0:31Eric: And this is Hallmark Mysteries.
- 0:34Sydney: And more.
- 0:36Eric: Well, hello Sidney, how are you?
- 0:39Sydney: I'm great, Eric.
- 0:40Sydney: How are you?
- 0:40Sydney: How are you enjoying this fall season?
- 0:44Eric: Fall season has been going fine for me.
- 0:47Eric: My Detroit lines are playing well, but I'm just ecstatic.
- 0:51Eric: This is the first time in a month and a half when I've asked you how you are and you've had an enthusiastic great.
- 1:00Sydney: Hi, I actually have eaten all my meals for the last couple of days, wow.
- 1:06Eric: Well, I'm very, very glad for you.
- 1:11Sydney: Thank you, I appreciate that, you know.
- 1:15Sydney: I was wondering, like what, since it's fall, is there like a song that you just listened to during fall that, like, really puts you in the fall mood?
- 1:26Eric: No, but I will say this morning on our walk I did try singing a little jewel to my wife and so she had braces when she was younger and she has not been good in wearing her retainer.
- 1:45Eric: So she has one tooth that's like a little bit out of alignment that I personally had never noticed.
- 1:50Eric: But she, she's going to go talk to North Donovan, consider Invisalign.
- 1:55Eric: And I said, oh, there's nothing wrong with your tooth.
- 1:57Eric: You got like a little snaggle tooth, like jewel, and she's like and she's thinking like jewel, like be jeweled or some sort of jewel.
- 2:06Eric: And then I got into the things.
- 2:08Eric: I started singing.
- 2:08Eric: You know, you were meant for me.
- 2:10Eric: And she's like, yeah, jewel just has not survived the times.
- 2:16Eric: That hasn't, you know, aged well.
- 2:17Eric: And I was like Sydney will take you down.
- 2:22Sydney: Well, I think she has like actually aged well, like physically.
- 2:29Eric: I think, and then I argued back as like no, her music's still fantastic, so yeah if and I have very different music tastes, so well that's that's okay.
- 2:39Eric: But I'll just say so, I don't really have a fall, fall tune.
- 2:44Eric: What about you?
- 2:46Sydney: Well, I, I like have a fall playlist, of course, because I'm crazy like that, but like one of the like 20 songs that I really like.
- 2:55Sydney: It's not necessarily like super fall, but it's called restless and it's by Allison Cross and Union Station and there's just something twangy about it and I was listening to it at work today and I was like, oh, I can see a pumpkin patch, I can.
- 3:10Eric: I don't know, I'm like oh, I was gonna say that could have been like, due to not eating meals, that you're hallucinating seeing pumpkin patches, but you've been eating so maybe I'm like I was eating in a good way, yeah it's got the false fear going.
- 3:30Eric: Oh my gosh.
- 3:31Eric: Well, we waited months and months and months and finally got to see it.
- 3:37Eric: And now it's time to discuss mystery island.
- 3:42Eric: I'll go to a brief description of mystery island, where Dr Amelia priestly in need of some relaxing vacation vacations.
- 3:54Eric: I don't know why it went plural, but Dr Amelia priestly in need of some relaxing vacation goes to mystery island and immersive murder mystery themed resort.
- 4:06Eric: As the games begin, tragedy strikes and the resort's reclusive founder is murdered.
- 4:15Eric: You know, it would be really nice with this murder mystery or refreshing cocktail.
- 4:26Sydney: Well, yes, and you're on an island, so of course you want a little something, something to sip on.
- 4:31Sydney: So I have got a signature cocktail for you, and it is the Phoenix's daiquiri.
- 4:40Sydney: Phoenix, the fitness guru we love to hate.
- 4:44Sydney: She is a sour girl and this is a sour cocktail.
- 4:52Eric: It is pretty sour.
- 4:54Sydney: Yeah, I would also argue a little salty.
- 4:57Sydney: So there's no salt in this, but I don't know you, uh, you're gonna add some rum with some fresh lime juice and a little bit of simple syrup and a lime wedge for garnish and you'll serve it in like a coupe glass.
- 5:14Sydney: But you know, I found it kind of interesting because when I was watching this movie and they she said I'm gonna go top off my daiquiri and I thought that's a daiquiri because it was in like a martini glass and when I think daiquiri I think of like a strawberry smoothie looking thing.
- 5:32Sydney: But it turns out, no, a daiquiri at its basic level kind of looks like Like a really plain margarita on the rocks, no ice, but yeah, it's like a lime rum concoction in a martini glass or a coupe glass.
- 5:52Sydney: So that's Phoenix's daiquiri.
- 5:56Eric: I've got these uh glasses that are.
- 5:59Eric: I guess they're glasses but they look like um, cheeky Things.
- 6:07Eric: They're rum, islandy drinks and yeah, I think I'd, I think I'd pour mine in that one, because it's a very island drink glass.
- 6:17Eric: Yes, yes.
- 6:18Eric: I think, so.
- 6:20Eric: I think we have to have a little umbrella in it too.
- 6:24Sydney: Oh yeah, I mean, she was not about that because she didn't have time for an umbrella.
- 6:29Eric: Yeah, she was a little further.
- 6:31Sydney: Yeah, but in the bad way.
- 6:35Eric: I don't know, she was fun she was not fun, not fun.
- 6:39Eric: Uh-oh, are we gonna brawl today?
- 6:42Eric: Uh-oh, um, all right.
- 6:46Eric: Well, let's get into it.
- 6:47Eric: What was there that you liked about mystery island?
- 6:54Sydney: okay.
- 6:55Sydney: So Let me start off by saying, like I think you know how last week, like we didn't expect to like that movie and then we really, actually Really enjoyed that movie.
- 7:06Sydney: So this week I expect to like this movie, and I did like this movie.
- 7:12Sydney: But I guess I felt a little underwhelmed only because, yes, last week I had such a different response, you know, and so this week it was just not as as like wow.
- 7:26Eric: So you set up too high of expectations.
- 7:30Sydney: I think I just expected what I got and I was like, okay, yeah, and Because last week I expected not a lot, you know.
- 7:40Sydney: But I mean, the acting was great, the writing was great.
- 7:45Sydney: Um, the setting was beautiful.
- 7:46Sydney: I loved the bamboo clue board with fancy gift basket.
- 7:52Sydney: That was nice.
- 7:52Sydney: Um, I enjoyed a secret passageway.
- 7:55Sydney: Like who doesn't love a secret passageway?
- 7:57Eric: I know I need one in my house.
- 7:59Sydney: Yeah and um.
- 8:01Sydney: It was kind of funny how.
- 8:03Sydney: I found it kind of funny how when they both found the dead body they were like laughing like school girls.
- 8:11Sydney: And and then of course, Not so funny, but yes, that was hilarious and I also really enjoyed and you know jcp is very good at this Um, that detective trend.
- 8:26Sydney: Appreciated Amelia's help on the case right away.
- 8:30Sydney: That was great.
- 8:31Eric: Yes, we didn't have any of the.
- 8:34Sydney: You know what are you doing.
- 8:35Sydney: I have a partner, I don't need you like.
- 8:40Eric: Well, we did talk about that with him, where he said he's, you know, told you over the, you know the, the, the inferior woman or the silly woman, and he likes.
- 8:50Eric: Yeah we're trying strong women.
- 8:52Eric: But I will say Amelia does come with a lot more credentials than the normal sleuth.
- 8:58Eric: She is a crime, murder, interrogating psychologists.
- 9:04Eric: So he would be, he would be foolish not to take her help, but many detectives are foolish.
- 9:13Sydney: Yeah, many men.
- 9:15Eric: Yes, yes, it's.
- 9:17Eric: Uh.
- 9:17Eric: I believe we could say mansplaining could take place, but he did not do that, oh my gosh, thank goodness.
- 9:26Sydney: So what about you, eric?
- 9:28Eric: I liked, I liked a lot of this movie.
- 9:30Eric: I really did Um watched it twice and the second time I even liked it more.
- 9:38Eric: Um.
- 9:38Eric: So the first thing off the bat is it was, I think, a nice complex mystery, um, or should say a complex story that had the mystery involved there, with a lot of agatha christy notes to it.
- 9:56Eric: Yes yes, you know what I had to do, and last week I talked to to john and um.
- 10:04Eric: He told me To to watch, uh, and then there were none, because he said, well, he didn't tell me to watch, but he said, oh, there's a lot of inspiration for that.
- 10:14Eric: So I'm like, well, I gotta watch it now.
- 10:16Eric: So I binged yeah, I binged it on acorn, three episodes and there really was a lot of.
- 10:23Eric: And then there were none Inspiration in this.
- 10:27Eric: And there was the, the gong, which a little little nod there, um, the unexpected killer, the In, uh, and then there were none.
- 10:38Eric: There's the general, whereas now we had the sarge, or just sarge.
- 10:42Eric: There's the invite of all these eclectic, you know, wide range of guests who come together with this riddle.
- 10:51Eric: That's, that's they've got to figure out.
- 10:54Eric: And then, of course, in the original, or in I shouldn't say the original, but in and then there were none.
- 11:00Eric: There's a whole thing where plays uh, not necessarily a mystery, but it accuses all, the, all the guests on a, on a record.
- 11:10Eric: And then here they use an old school record, little 45, to play the riddle there.
- 11:16Eric: And so I think that you know whether that was Completely a nod to it or not, I really do think it was.
- 11:22Eric: But then you know, even the, the matriarch Evelyn Mertok, like that has to be has to be, you know.
- 11:31Sydney: I got the.
- 11:32Eric: Christy, and then I talked to John after it aired and he's like no one's, no one's Catching that.
- 11:38Eric: I'm like I thought it was so obvious that it didn't need to be, you know, mentioned.
- 11:43Eric: Yeah that that's agatha christy and all that.
- 11:46Eric: So I I really like the agatha christy Mysteries and so I really enjoyed it.
- 11:53Eric: And plus, like I said, this just had a complex story, a lot of Like, every single character in there was a viable suspect and had their own things that they were bringing to it.
- 12:04Eric: So that was great.
- 12:05Eric: Just in there, all this very interesting characters.
- 12:08Eric: Even phoenix, who you love to hate, I found her.
- 12:12Eric: Yes, he was not likable, but I found that character enjoyable because you kind of need that.
- 12:18Eric: You know, sure, agonist, she don't like, so I liked her character.
- 12:22Eric: Now, I didn't like particularly like her, but I liked the character and I thought it was uh, like, yeah, I thought it was just really well written for all the different characters.
- 12:32Eric: The other thing, and I noticed this more, the second go around, but the music, it had like a big Feel to it, the score and there are certain parts where I was just getting this Jurassic Park vibe from it.
- 12:44Eric: We're just got like real, you know big, and then just throughout.
- 12:49Eric: So I looked up the guy.
- 12:50Eric: I've never looked up the composers before, but this guy, christopher gugg lick, gugg lick, say that like five times fast, but he's done a zillion hallmark movies, including to catch a spy, but oh, all the rom-coms bunch of them.
- 13:09Eric: He's probably done 25 At least.
- 13:14Eric: So he kudos to Christopher gugg.
- 13:18Eric: Look, I'm probably it's.
- 13:21Eric: It's a tough name and I'm probably slaughtering it, so I'm sorry.
- 13:23Eric: I'm sorry, but I also.
- 13:26Eric: One of the things I really enjoyed too was the relationship between Amelia and Jane.
- 13:31Eric: I found them so fun, you know, kind of like we like Goldie and Marla together.
- 13:36Eric: I thought when they were together Amelia was very reserved, but when she was with Jane she was, like he said, laughing the whole time.
- 13:45Eric: When they stumble upon the body I had that of my notes as well where they're just cracking up like, oh, not one dead, but we get two dead bodies, yeah you know, and just laughing all about until it's like, oh wait, he really is dead.
- 13:57Eric: So Really enjoyed their, their relationship.
- 14:02Eric: And then the last thing I think the obviously the location, the resort, the island, the wardrobe.
- 14:09Eric: We'll get to that.
- 14:11Eric: You know when we talk style.
- 14:12Sydney: I know you're getting through everything like you're supposed to say some of this mystery stuff For the mystery all that stuff was just really good.
- 14:20Eric: So well, I have more notes to that.
- 14:22Eric: So so there was a lot that I really liked and yes, and I will say, when I first watched it I don't wanna say I was underwhelmed as well, but I had that really high expectation and I was like, okay, it was good, it was really good.
- 14:44Sydney: And it meets it yeah.
- 14:45Eric: And I was happy.
- 14:46Eric: But I was not like and this maybe is what you're saying I was not just blown away like oh my gosh.
- 14:52Eric: But the second time I watched it and maybe I was just watching it a little more chill that time I enjoyed it even more and I was like oh, I really like this, I really like this.
- 15:05Sydney: Yeah.
- 15:06Eric: So pretty good, well good.
- 15:08Eric: So, like I say, I had a pretty long list there, surprising.
- 15:11Eric: I have quite a few things that I thought could have been better.
- 15:13Eric: What about you?
- 15:17Sydney: I think you're gonna just laugh at the stuff I so, of course, like Phoenix was just very hard for me to stomach, like she was just so rude and then like the whole, I don't know if I should give it away, but like the scene where she's in the other room and she's talking to the other guy and Amelia over here is her.
- 15:43Sydney: Oh yeah, and I'm just like I just hate her so much and so, but she actually well, I won't say much more, but I could have, I just didn't like her and that's the nature of the character, Like you said, like it's necessary and I get it, but that was just a not enjoyable part for me.
- 16:05Sydney: And then another part that was really not enjoyable for me was when they found Morgan's fingernail by the riverbed.
- 16:15Sydney: I have a thing about fingernails, okay Do you not get Manny's and Petty's.
- 16:23Sydney: I do, but I don't get any fake stuff put on my nails and like they remind me of when my nieces used to have those press on ones and one of my nieces used to take one of her press on nails and like eat Nutella with it out of the jar and leave these dirty nails.
- 16:45Eric: Okay, that definitely could scar you for life.
- 16:48Sydney: Yes.
- 16:48Sydney: So when they found Morgan's nail, I was like, oh no, no, put that down, don't show me this nail.
- 16:55Sydney: This is a clue.
- 16:57Sydney: I didn't want.
- 16:58Eric: Don't pull up a jar of peanut butter and have a little snack.
- 17:02Sydney: Nutella yeah, no, so that for me was just too much, and other than that I didn't have any real complaints.
- 17:15Sydney: Yeah, that was it for me, too early.
- 17:23Eric: I was creeped out by the fingernail.
- 17:25Sydney: Yes, pretty much.
- 17:27Sydney: What about you, Eric?
- 17:28Eric: Okay, so I talked about the Agatha Christie and if you watch, as I said, I just watched the and then the Rennan there's also a great, great mystery that's over on Birkbox.
- 17:42Eric: Why didn't they ask Evans?
- 17:44Eric: Both of these are three part series, so it's not like a trilogy, but it just takes three episodes to tell the story, so it's extended.
- 17:55Eric: I think this could have been better if it was in that kind of environment, because it was, like I said, a complex story.
- 18:04Eric: These characters there was so much to them that I think they're, you know, it was getting it crammed in that hour and 24 minutes.
- 18:12Eric: I think if we could have let them breathe more and it would have just been that much better.
- 18:17Eric: And, as you and I were saying, like having that over the top, I think that could have taken it there.
- 18:23Eric: So I think that was the whole thing, that just we had to get it in that 124.
- 18:28Eric: And it just there's so much story to tell that it just it was confined and I wish it could have had more room.
- 18:35Eric: You know so it's not really bad and what it is, but you know so that's it.
- 18:42Eric: Then, along the same lines is so I watched it, you know, with commercials and fast forwarded through them, because I recorded it and then I watched it and it just to me it's kind of messed with the rhythm of it.
- 18:58Eric: I wish I recorded it on Peacock and I was gonna watch it there because I can watch it without commercials for my second viewing and I thought that would be.
- 19:06Eric: You know, I wanted to see how that would be.
- 19:10Eric: I did not realize Peacock movies are only available for 72 hours and then they go away.
- 19:16Eric: So I waited too long and I went to go watch it again and it was gone so I didn't get to see it without.
- 19:24Eric: So both times I had a fast forward through the four minutes of commercials.
- 19:29Eric: So even though you're fast, forwarding it still takes that break.
- 19:32Eric: So it just to me the commercials mess with the rhythm of the story, because that story was so, it just needed to flow and I would have loved it without commercials.
- 19:42Eric: Once again, nothing against.
- 19:44Eric: Really neither of these are against the movie per se.
- 19:47Eric: It's just like wanting it more and it's more natural elements.
- 19:51Sydney: So you, know, I think we've gotten used to watching stuff on Fritbox and all that with us.
- 19:56Sydney: No commercials.
- 19:58Eric: But I think just this one, like normally, you know the mysteries they're in that nine act and it sort of cuts off and then it brings you to another one.
- 20:08Eric: So I don't, it doesn't really bother me that much, but for this one I just wanted that momentum to keep going.
- 20:14Eric: But you know me.
- 20:16Eric: So now, as far as the actual movie, the jury's still out for me.
- 20:23Eric: And Charlie Weber, I think I liked him, but I'm not sure I liked him.
- 20:30Eric: I can see why.
- 20:32Eric: So his act, like his acting, I don't know.
- 20:37Eric: I need to see him again and to see if he takes it deeper and more, because there are certain things I really liked.
- 20:49Eric: Certain other ones I thought kind of fell a little bit flat.
- 20:51Eric: But so it goes.
- 20:52Eric: And then another one.
- 20:55Sydney: I didn't think I wasn't super into him Like I would be with you know, Christopher, and all that.
- 21:04Eric: So Victor in there.
- 21:06Sydney: Yeah, yeah, I just feel like there was something missing, like I kept thinking maybe he should have an English accent too, or I don't know it.
- 21:16Sydney: Just he didn't grab me like she did.
- 21:18Sydney: There wasn't as much interest there.
- 21:23Eric: But then the other thing for me was I was a little bit confused about Detective Jason was treating the chief kind of like Detective Tom Mason here go get this sampled.
- 21:41Eric: And it seemed to be treating her as his assistant or his protege versus his boss.
- 21:49Sydney: So I was a little bit weird.
- 21:50Sydney: I didn't notice that too.
- 21:51Sydney: What's?
- 21:51Eric: going on here.
- 21:52Eric: I thought that was strange too, but then I remembered she said so, you know, at the beginning, because someone was out of town or something she was like, so I'm your partner for the and, so it's funny to say that because the second viewing, like the first one, it kind of I'm like what the hell's going on here?
- 22:11Eric: And the second viewing, I kind of went to that and was thinking she isn't really the detective.
- 22:18Eric: She's come up a different way, so she's not used to being out in the field doing that kind of field work like he is.
- 22:25Eric: And so she was just because of the guy who broke his, didn't he broke his, sprained his foot in a like a I forget what it was like jet ski accident or something like that.
- 22:37Eric: But so I was thinking maybe she was, you know, not really used to doing all that.
- 22:42Eric: So she really was kind of assisting, even though she was a superior.
- 22:46Sydney: Yeah.
- 22:48Eric: And then another thing, and I'm not I'm gonna throw this out there and it didn't really bother me, but when I went through and I was looking on Reddit and I was looking in Facebook and Twitter, so many people were complaining about the accents.
- 23:03Eric: And to me and maybe it's once again I watch all the SpritBox and you know Acorn and just appreciate diversity and realize that, hey, there's people in this world who don't come from the United States and Canada.
- 23:19Eric: But it didn't bother me at all, but it bothered a lot of people, that these people had accents.
- 23:26Eric: And I don't know which accent it was, whether it was the chief's accent, cause she was clearly like, had that Panamanian thing going.
- 23:34Sydney: Yeah.
- 23:35Eric: Or if it was people just couldn't understand British people and no one had that thick of a British accent.
- 23:41Eric: I didn't think either, so I don't know what it was Didn't bother me, but a lot of people it did seem to bother.
- 23:48Eric: So I can't, it didn't bother me, but I'll just throw it out there.
- 23:51Eric: They had accents.
- 23:53Eric: I liked it.
- 23:54Eric: I thought it added to it.
- 23:55Eric: I thought it made it a more fun mystery.
- 23:59Sydney: Yeah, agreed.
- 24:02Eric: All right, let's move on.
- 24:04Eric: Wally of the mystery.
- 24:08Sydney: Yeah, so I enjoyed it.
- 24:10Sydney: I enjoyed the forensic montage.
- 24:13Sydney: We haven't really seen that before, where they like swap in your math and taking your fingerprints and all that fun stuff I had here that I enjoyed how the mystery matriarch was definitely giving Agatha Christie, which we discussed, and also so I knew what happened halfway through, because there were just several clues and I never expect to really know because I didn't know the week prior, but there were several clues where I was just like, okay, this is the only thing that makes sense, but I still really enjoyed it and the story was like you said.
- 24:58Sydney: The side characters were each really interesting and I think that's really hard to make that many side characters matter.
- 25:06Sydney: Like most of the time if you have that many actors, it's kind of like confusing or people are just falling flat for you.
- 25:17Sydney: It's just it's not working, but it worked and I thought that was in itself a pretty big feat 100% agree.
- 25:29Eric: Usually and we've talked about this before I'm trying to remember which mystery it was but we talked about how the first tier acting was fantastic.
- 25:42Eric: The second tier was pretty darn good, but then when it got to the third, they just, you know, they could tell you had local actors and just weren't very good.
- 25:54Eric: And so I think and I'll say this is a credit to, to John writing a really interesting script that, exactly like you said, all the characters were interesting.
- 26:11Eric: So, and that's like it's not an easy feat to do, because it's a lot of people and, as I was just saying, that you have an hour and 24 minutes and so it's crammed, it's congested, and to still be able to do that, that's a huge feat.
- 26:27Eric: And the mystery, as far as the quality, I thought it was really good because it was completely unexpected, even though you figured it out.
- 26:35Eric: I figured it out too, but I'll say John inadvertently gave me a clue where, when you talked about the and then there were none, I was like.
- 26:46Eric: I was like, okay, this has to be not the expected.
- 26:51Eric: There's got to be a big twist.
- 26:53Eric: And I'll be honest and I told him this, I was totally expecting it to be some like monkey that came from the jungle and somehow did it.
- 27:09Eric: I was thinking like all these completely out of the box things.
- 27:15Sydney: Yes, you were.
- 27:16Eric: Then I finally came to it the only possible thing is the completely unexpected of what it turned out to be.
- 27:24Eric: Yeah so, yeah.
- 27:28Eric: So I thought the quality of the mystery, just the quality of the actual mystery, was maybe the best mystery this year.
- 27:36Eric: Yeah, true so all, right now we get to talk about your favorite subject the style.
- 27:48Sydney: Oh well, I will say the detective looked.
- 27:54Sydney: You know, that's one thing I did.
- 27:56Sydney: Like Charlie Weber looked nice in a tuxedo, I will say that they just happened to have one lying around that he could wear.
- 28:04Eric: But my question was okay to that and I guess maybe this should have been in the thing.
- 28:10Eric: Maybe I didn't like that.
- 28:12Eric: They come to him and say, hell, we have to dress formal for dinner.
- 28:17Eric: You don't have a tuxedo, he's in a suit, so he's already the best dressed person there.
- 28:23Eric: But they're like, okay, you got to go formal, but then nobody else.
- 28:28Eric: The women change, but none of the guys are out.
- 28:35Eric: Other guys are in tuxes.
- 28:38Sydney: Yeah, I guess I didn't pay attention to that.
- 28:41Eric: And then they don't even go to the dinner.
- 28:42Eric: They're like, oh, let's just go walk on the beach and be romantic.
- 28:46Sydney: That was kind of goofy, but so, and with Amelia I feel like she looked great 99% of the time, except for the dress.
- 28:55Sydney: Yes, she wore the first night.
- 28:57Eric: I just did not like it.
- 29:00Sydney: Yeah, it didn't fit her super well in the bust area and I felt like the draping was just off, like it just looked like it was someone else's dress that she borrowed and it was kind of ill fitting in in the bust area and so they could have just brought it up a bit in.
- 29:21Sydney: A bit would have been better.
- 29:23Sydney: Except I just don't think that draping did anything for her, like the other night when she's walking on the beach and like the coral dress.
- 29:31Sydney: Now that looked nice and her friend Jane always looked flawless she, I mean she's a lady.
- 29:39Sydney: Jane, yes, so that makes sense.
- 29:42Sydney: But like she always had really well tailored outfits that had really great accents to them, like pleading and just little cutouts here and there, great patterns.
- 29:55Sydney: But I was just kind of underwhelmed by that first night look for Amelia.
- 30:01Sydney: But the rest of the time she looked really cute and you know, that fancy mansion of course was really great.
- 30:11Sydney: I loved that and I loved that the whole vibe was kind of like Costa Rican ask.
- 30:17Sydney: I was there for it.
- 30:19Sydney: What about you?
- 30:21Eric: 100% agree with everything you said, as I.
- 30:24Eric: As I said at the top of this, one of the things I thought was fantastic about the movie was all the style in it, whether it be the physical, you know style of the resort or their fashion.
- 30:40Eric: I didn't have a problem with her green dress.
- 30:43Eric: I thought she looked fantastic throughout the question I do have for you, which some people made a comment about and I thought actually made sense Did you have a problem with her running through the jungle in the?
- 30:56Eric: What do you call those, esperad?
- 30:57Eric: What do you call those shoes?
- 30:58Eric: Espa drills.
- 31:01Sydney: You know, I will say I feel like I noticed that she was kind of having a hard time sneaking away from that door and those Espa drills going down the stairs and I thought, oh gosh, she steps because they were quite high.
- 31:14Sydney: They weren't like, you know, your Clark's Espa drills or something, they were like high fashion and I thought if she takes one wrong step she could just fall right down those stairs.
- 31:28Sydney: I did kind of cringe a little while she was trying to run in them Because I just thought that's, that is a sport, that's pretty neat, but it didn't bother me, because they were really cute because I saw someone posted oh, as soon as I saw her running in the jungle in the shoes, I was done.
- 31:52Eric: I'm like she wasn't, like she was planning this.
- 31:54Eric: She saw the guy sneak off and was chasing after him so she wouldn't have like, oh, hang on, I'm going to run back to my room and change into some comfortable flats.
- 32:03Sydney: If anything, honey, you should not be done.
- 32:05Sydney: You should be clapping, because running in Espa drills in the middle of a forest cannot be simple.
- 32:13Eric: And I thought that outfit was just the cute, sporty look, the white, those white pants and the Capris the denim pluff blouse.
- 32:20Eric: Yeah, she, she looked just cute throughout the whole movie.
- 32:24Eric: But I agreed, jane, she was next level good in this movie.
- 32:30Sydney: And it made sense because she was, like you said, a bareness.
- 32:34Eric: And in Fredericks I liked.
- 32:36Eric: You know, the patch can never you'll never get over Fredericks, I can never downplay the patch in his whole, just very stiff because he's you know, he's the butler, so he's supposed to be that way.
- 32:51Eric: Yeah, I found his character with his whole look.
- 32:55Eric: He just was the perfect butler.
- 32:57Eric: So and then as you said, the, the, the.
- 33:01Eric: Of course the place was just beautiful, but it also just was a very sleuthy type set to with the, with the hidden hallway and you know, all of that really liked.
- 33:13Sydney: Yeah Well, eric, how many bodies did we have?
- 33:19Eric: We didn't have one, but we had to.
- 33:23Sydney: Done, done, done.
- 33:25Eric: So is that like your sweet spot?
- 33:28Eric: Of course we get our initial one, but then you get another one just to make it a little more exciting.
- 33:33Sydney: but we don't go three where it starts turning into, you know yeah, well, I have to say, like, if you watch enough of those poro or those miss Marple, it kind of like I enjoy like the more the mysteries that have the like two, two bodies, I think it.
- 33:54Sydney: I think it kind of adds because it also adds to you questioning who really is the culprit, because you're like, well, wait a minute, I thought it could be this way, but now there's another dead person, so that doesn't make sense, the person who I was thinking is now dead.
- 34:12Sydney: Yeah, so I enjoy it.
- 34:15Sydney: What about you?
- 34:17Sydney: Are you?
- 34:18Eric: Well, I'll say and.
- 34:20Eric: And then there were none.
- 34:21Eric: As the name implies, everyone died, so 10, yet 10 in that one.
- 34:28Eric: So john decided not to go all out on Mr Island with that.
- 34:33Eric: I don't think hallmark could have handled 1010 murders, but yeah the I think the two is is good.
- 34:43Eric: It gives you that, like we were just saying, you're going, and then it gives you an opportunity to veer, or also in question everything where you thought you were going.
- 34:54Eric: So it's nice little roadblock or detour, so to speak.
- 35:00Sydney: Definitely.
- 35:01Eric: And yeah, I think when you start getting three you're the sort of laying them in a little too much, especially for this format.
- 35:08Eric: If it had a longer, as I was saying that maybe that three episode you could get away with some more.
- 35:14Eric: But yeah, I would say to choose to make a little more fun, a little more exciting.
- 35:20Eric: All right, you ready to get grading?
- 35:26Sydney: I am ready.
- 35:28Eric: Team meter.
- 35:30Eric: I gave it a three.
- 35:34Eric: Same here there's some flirty looks, some flirty comments, but that was about about it.
- 35:41Sydney: Pretty much.
- 35:42Eric: I'd say, the one interaction of oh, my dad's a cop, I'm a cop, my mom's a psychiatrist, I'm a psychiatrist, like that was a.
- 35:53Eric: I thought that was kind of cute, so but yeah, and then I can say a little little couple things and the other thing I actually I liked was more the pullback of it was.
- 36:06Eric: Then Jane sort of hinted at it, but she didn't.
- 36:10Eric: You know, normally a lot in, in, in, in Homeark movies.
- 36:12Eric: The best friend is if you just look at a guy, or a guy walks in the room like, oh, you're in love, you're in love, you should go have babies.
- 36:19Eric: And it wasn't that.
- 36:20Eric: She was just like you know, you guys flirt a little bit.
- 36:25Eric: She acknowledged it, but that was it.
- 36:27Eric: So fairly low steam meter, and I think that's what you should have in a first.
- 36:31Eric: Hopefully you know one of many, but um, in a first one it's hard to have too much going on.
- 36:37Eric: True, All right, how about the story?
- 36:40Eric: How was the story for you?
- 36:42Sydney: Uh story.
- 36:42Sydney: I gave it an eight because I thought it was pretty good.
- 36:46Sydney: I mean, it wasn't like I feel like I'm really reserving that 10 for, like you know, it just had everything I was looking for, but I thought it was really good.
- 37:00Sydney: What about you?
- 37:01Eric: You don't always have to be right, that's fine.
- 37:03Eric: I gave it a 10.
- 37:04Sydney: I thought the story was obviously the strength of it.
- 37:09Eric: I thought John wrote a fantastic story and you know some of the execution maybe, which you know that fall on the director, but as far as the bones of this I thought it was, it was great.
- 37:23Eric: And once again, I think because I like the British mysteries and I like Agatha Christie and it really had that there, it had me hooked.
- 37:35Sydney: Okay.
- 37:36Eric: So how about the mystery?
- 37:39Sydney: Mystery.
- 37:39Sydney: I also gave an eight, all right.
- 37:43Eric: That's a little bit better than you.
- 37:44Eric: There too, I gave it a nine.
- 37:45Eric: I may have even gone higher and given to the 10, but since John unwidely gave sort of me the clue to solve it early and to keep me from being too blown away which, by the way, at the end of and then there were none I literally gasped so people you have not seen that, get on acorn, do a trial membership and wash it.
- 38:10Eric: It is so, so good.
- 38:13Eric: Definitely not a hallmark.
- 38:14Eric: It's grittier than a hallmark, but it is so good, so good.
- 38:20Eric: Like I said, I gave it the nine.
- 38:24Eric: It could have been a 10 just because it was so different than any other mystery that I think we've seen.
- 38:33Eric: We've seen.
- 38:33Eric: All right, let's get into the acting.
- 38:39Sydney: Acting.
- 38:39Sydney: I gave it a nine because I thought that Was pretty decent.
- 38:45Eric: All right, I gave it an eight.
- 38:47Eric: I think Jane was knee-eleven.
- 38:50Eric: She was by far my favorite character.
- 38:52Eric: I think she Could go ahead and have her own mystery or her own show.
- 38:59Eric: She was really, really good, loved her character.
- 39:03Eric: Some people said, oh, elizabeth Henshroom was, uh, you know, as Amelia was too monotone.
- 39:10Eric: But she was monotone when she was a psychiatrist and acting in that role.
- 39:14Eric: But we just talked about how she was giggly, binding the dead body and she was flirty when she was with, you know, trent.
- 39:22Eric: So I didn't.
- 39:23Eric: I didn't think she was monotone at all, other than when she was in Crime mode and that's sort of what her role is.
- 39:30Sydney: I Guess I could see why they say that, because with a lot of our Typical leading ladies there are moments where they get really overly excited and they're like kind of Almost yelling or their, I would say, overreacting some of the time too.
- 39:50Sydney: But I'm sure you noticed like the inflections are kind of like.
- 39:54Sydney: You know, so that's probably why they were saying that, but it didn't bother me.
- 40:00Sydney: It was kind of nice not to have that.
- 40:04Eric: Yeah, I thought it was very fitting for her character.
- 40:06Eric: How about your style?
- 40:10Eric: I?
- 40:11Sydney: Gave the style a seven.
- 40:13Sydney: I thought that was yeah, I'm, you know what.
- 40:17Eric: I think, I'm just not that green dress ruined it for you.
- 40:21Sydney: It really did.
- 40:21Sydney: But I think that I'm just not also like a super islandy person, like that's not like my favorite, so I'm being a little biased, so that's.
- 40:34Eric: Okay, I gave it a 10 her.
- 40:39Eric: I found out what they were called from a Talk to JC and she informed me the curtain bangs.
- 40:46Eric: I'm a sucker for the curtain bangs.
- 40:49Eric: I think it's a great look.
- 40:51Eric: Plus, it had all the form, aware, whole place, the destination, everything, you know.
- 40:57Eric: Everything was just great.
- 41:00Eric: And I didn't have a problem with that green dress.
- 41:03Eric: I Guess I should have been looking at her chest more.
- 41:09Sydney: I wasn't you just wouldn't know, eric, what was the last time you bought a dress.
- 41:14Eric: It's been a while, but yeah, I thought the style like all that was an actual Complete strength of the movie Did a fantastic job there.
- 41:28Eric: All right, what's your score right up to?
- 41:32Sydney: 35.
- 41:33Eric: I gave it a 40.
- 41:34Eric: I think this may be the first time I've ranked a movie higher than you.
- 41:37Sydney: I Think I might be.
- 41:40Eric: I think I'm.
- 41:40Eric: Usually either we're right on Exactly the same or it may usually be like a point or two below you.
- 41:46Eric: We're usually pretty darn close.
- 41:49Sydney: Yeah.
- 41:49Eric: I point gap, maybe one of our bigger, bigger gaps, and I say I Know this one really hit, really hit a home run for me, I still think, for the record Cases.
- 42:02Eric: Mystery lane is still my favorite of the year.
- 42:04Eric: I think that was great.
- 42:06Eric: Me too Love that one, and this is just in a whole different way.
- 42:10Sydney: I yes, it's very different.
- 42:14Eric: What do you think this do?
- 42:15Eric: What about you?
- 42:16Sydney: It sort of ended and I'm not sure about that direction, about the Trent and Amelia hoping Right the concoct, the mysteries I Almost thought what if they take that and they run with it and like, okay, so all of a sudden they're in another Destination and they happen upon a mystery and then at the end, when they solve it, they're like, okay, this is the next one for us to write for mystery.
- 42:45Eric: I so.
- 42:46Eric: So Trent and Amelia are now Flying around the globe together, and I mean that was the ideal.
- 42:54Sydney: Because I'm like I'm again, I'm not like an island person.
- 42:59Sydney: So I'd like to see him in Prague, or I'd like to see him, you know, and even in South Africa, or just somewhere like different.
- 43:08Eric: Well, that sounds like.
- 43:09Eric: Hopefully we get to see which Dylan Neil, if you remember, teased us with his international mystery.
- 43:16Eric: Yeah, well, that's more than Tactics that would be there too, but you're too young.
- 43:24Eric: You weren't around for a fantasy island as a kid.
- 43:28Sydney: So I think I remember there.
- 43:30Eric: Plain, mr Orc.
- 43:32Sydney: That's that.
- 43:33Sydney: This is that that little midget man.
- 43:35Eric: Yeah.
- 43:36Sydney: Okay.
- 43:37Eric: All right, so I'll just leave it on.
- 43:40Eric: I Don't think this was the mystery for everybody.
- 43:43Eric: I think if you're into the British mysteries or if you like the more complex ones, that aren't necessarily the you know that small town cozy, which is nothing wrong, you know I like both of them.
- 43:56Eric: I'm reading all the, all the Hannah Swenson's right now as well, but it just is a different feel.
- 44:05Eric: And if you in, if you like that it's got different pacing.
- 44:09Eric: You know our friend Andrea, she wasn't, she wasn't loving it because a lot of I think the pacing and some of the cuts and the way it would the the director handled it she wasn't, wasn't fond of.
- 44:22Eric: But you know she likes the cozy, I think more.
- 44:25Eric: So I think that's it.
- 44:26Eric: I think you like that.
- 44:31Sydney: It could be like you said, like how things are normally laid out in acts.
- 44:35Sydney: This didn't seem to follow that quite as much.
- 44:39Sydney: It didn't seem to have the axe down like to a science.
- 44:45Sydney: It seemed, like you said, like it would need to flow, to articulate it better.
- 44:50Sydney: But commercials who's gonna pay bills?
- 44:56Eric: No, she caught.
- 44:57Eric: What's with the 72?
- 44:58Eric: Why did I don't get it?
- 45:00Eric: Why do they have to go away after 72 hours?
- 45:02Eric: Why can't they at least give you a week?
- 45:04Eric: I?
- 45:06Sydney: Don't know.
- 45:08Eric: I'm not going to write a sternly worded letter to somebody you do that, do that.
- 45:13Eric: Okay, all right.
- 45:15Eric: Well, there we go.
- 45:17Eric: Love to hear what you thought.
- 45:20Eric: Go ahead and give us a, like, a subscribe.
- 45:26Eric: Leave us a comment on the podcast, wherever you may follow it.
- 45:29Eric: We always appreciate reading that and you know, if you want to give us some stars and thumbs up and all that good stuff in the ranking, please do.
- 45:42Sydney: Yes, and go follow us over at Hallmark Mysteries and more on Instagram for more mysterious content.
- 45:51Sydney: Which?
- 45:54Eric: by the way.
- 45:54Eric: So I've added that that'll find the, you know, find the missing yeah, and.
- 46:00Eric: Boy last week I thought was so easy and it's like I was throw out a knee that was not easy and everybody got stopped and I showed my wife afterwards and she then got mad at me saying Whereas I can't find it, just tell me where it is.
- 46:15Sydney: Yeah, I thought.
- 46:16Eric: I thought it was so easy.
- 46:18Sydney: And I'll be quiet because you made it right.
- 46:22Eric: Yeah, of course.
- 46:23Eric: That's why I said I just it's just funny, because some of the other ones the one before that with Logan's computer with a little post-it I Thought yeah, or the tea cup, the cup.
- 46:33Eric: I thought that one was going to be Really hard and people are like got it, got it, got it.
- 46:38Eric: And then this one I thought was going to be easy and it turned out not to be.
- 46:41Eric: But so but have fun with that.
- 46:43Eric: I think about maybe doing a little more multiple Instead of finding just one thing.
- 46:49Eric: Maybe do oh, you find a couple of them.
- 46:53Sydney: That may be a little more fun.
- 46:55Sydney: Yeah.
- 46:57Eric: All right, well, it's any.
- 46:59Eric: It was fun talking mystery island with you.
- 47:02Eric: We do have another mystery coming out later tonight of Hannah Swenson.
- 47:11Eric: Will see what happens with her and Detective Mike.
- 47:15Eric: So you can take out your anger, your rage, you can get mad at at Hannah for all her.
- 47:24Sydney: I.
- 47:24Sydney: I heard things?
- 47:25Sydney: I heard things are gonna get zesty.
- 47:31Eric: Very zesty.
- 47:32Eric: It is based on lemon, lemon.
- 47:34Eric: I finished reading the book, so I'll be very interested to see how much it follows the book, of which I Don't think it can.
- 47:45Eric: It is a story, as far as the book goes, that we're talking about jewel not aging well.
- 47:52Eric: It didn't.
- 47:54Eric: It has not aged well.
- 47:55Sydney: What about the dessert?
- 47:57Sydney: Does she make a lemon dessert marang?
- 48:00Eric: Okay so she makes it lemon meringue pie in the.
- 48:06Sydney: Might stick to that.
- 48:08Eric: Yeah, which I find it interesting that they completely went I like the title, but that they completely went away from the the book title.
- 48:17Eric: So, but so we'll be getting to see what's going on with Hannah.
- 48:22Eric: I'm team Hannah, your team Mike.
- 48:24Sydney: So we know I'm, I'm team her sister that I never get to see we both sisters, are here.
- 48:34Sydney: Thank goodness.
- 48:37Eric: In the book, both sisters come back, but it's Michelle who comes back, not what's the other, andrea, right?
- 48:43Eric: Yeah so it's not Andrea who comes back, but it's Michelle who comes back from college.
- 48:49Sydney: So, oh, my gosh, I have to say in the promo, when Michelle is like why haven't you called my sister and he's like she told me not to I was like, oh, this is so like a man I will say I this funny, because when we saw that I was like I see his point.
- 49:12Eric: She told me not to it is a battle of sexes, and when it's funny, though, is that with the ending of the last one, you and I flip-flopped where I Was all about girl power and you were all about and I you're being in the church she was being um.
- 49:27Eric: I Won that.
- 49:33Sydney: You two, eric, sweet dreams.
- 49:35Eric: Oh.
