Latest / Rugby Rivals - Sir John Kirwan & Victor Matfield / JK & Victor REACT to Dave Rennie as New All Blacks Coach!
Transcript
- 0:00I think with Dave Rene, he's been in the system in New Zealand, now he's been away a little bit,
- 0:06so he comes in and he's starting something new, he's going to start like a, this is the all-black culture I want.
- 0:11Victor, he's got a very good win record against South Africa with Australia, so that's good 72%
- 0:16so you guys should be shaking in your boots.
- 0:18I'm very impressed, all backs got a coach, you two guys are sitting next to each other without killing each other,
- 0:25I think the spring was got trouble this year.
- 0:28Like this is a hard job, what people don't realise is like if you're coaching, you know,
- 0:33transfer, then you've got those stakeholders, but when you coach South Africa, you've got the whole country
- 0:37and it's same with New Zealand.
- 0:38First of all, you just gave your age your way talking about transfer, they haven't been
- 0:42transferred for 30 years, but I mean with the talent that the all-black's have within your country,
- 0:48you just need someone to put them in the right direction, give them a little bit of direction
- 0:52and now you want to play at school.
- 0:53You're worried, sounds like you're worried, Victor, sounds like you're worried, mate.
- 1:03Are you, are you all together this morning?
- 1:08Yeah, mate, everything that's coming together with the all-black's,
- 1:12huh? You two are getting closer, that's got a coach.
- 1:16Yeah, it's all coming together.
- 1:17Yeah.
- 1:19Now, mate, you're good. What do you think about unused?
- 1:21What do you think?
- 1:22I'm really waiting for the show.
- 1:23What show?
- 1:24We're going to start talking to my mate.
- 1:25Yeah.
- 1:27Welcome to rivals.
- 1:29Victor Matfield and John Cohen, Sir John Cohen, sitting next to me here.
- 1:34Now you can talk.
- 1:36I'm very impressed. All-backs got a coach.
- 1:38You two guys are sitting next to each other without killing each other.
- 1:42I think the spring was got trouble this year.
- 1:45Everything is just coming together.
- 1:47There's a big chance that I will kill him.
- 1:48He's so annoying, live.
- 1:51Like it's way better to sing him on video, Victor.
- 1:53That's like horrible.
- 1:54Like he's so annoying.
- 1:55I had to walk out of bed for this movie because he was annoying.
- 1:58The shit out of me.
- 1:59But what do you think of Dave Rene, mate?
- 2:00Do you think I know him a little bit from back in the day of super-reppy,
- 2:04where he coached the chiefs.
- 2:07I mean, the chiefs are always a team that were in the bottom part of the table.
- 2:12And then he came in and he made a formidable team.
- 2:16So, yeah, I think with the all-blacks,
- 2:19I think you get different coaches.
- 2:20I mean, I've seen now with Japan,
- 2:23or if you coach maybe a Wales, whatever.
- 2:26You get a different type of coach.
- 2:29I've seen the way Eddie coach let's say with a Japanese team.
- 2:33It's completely different than I would think you would coach like a South African team.
- 2:37But yeah, he knows the culture.
- 2:40He understands the players.
- 2:43And that's probably the only thing the all-blacks need.
- 2:46It's someone that really put out a culture there
- 2:50and give them clarity on how they want to play.
- 2:53And I've read a little bit about him.
- 2:55He said he knows exactly how he wants to play.
- 2:57He will be under pressure.
- 2:59But I think he's a wreckedly man through and through.
- 3:03Yeah, I think for me,
- 3:05you know, I'm a big Jamie Joseph fan and friend.
- 3:09And I think probably what
- 3:12pipped it at the end was just Dave's experience.
- 3:17You know, I think coaching a first-tier squad,
- 3:21you know, and he has been through a lot of adversity.
- 3:24I think understanding the pressure that comes with it,
- 3:26probably pipped it at the end of both.
- 3:28The nice thing that came out of it for me also, Victor was,
- 3:32you know, they spoke to each other this morning.
- 3:34You know, it was just a nice way they went about it.
- 3:38And I think the process has been very thorough.
- 3:40And if you look, and I will probably blame South Africa,
- 3:44because I think, you know, without Brownie involved with Jamie,
- 3:48I think a lot of people saw Jamie and Brownie as a coaching
- 3:53pair and a very strong one.
- 3:54So once Russie decided not to release him,
- 3:59it probably changed that in Dave's favour.
- 4:01But like I would have been really happy with both of them.
- 4:03I was thinking also about whether it'd be good for Jamie
- 4:08to go in as assistant coach and maybe, you know,
- 4:12do what the All Blacks have been doing for a little while,
- 4:14maybe getting them to, you know, get them in the job,
- 4:18and then he could take over.
- 4:20But it just depends like that both to
- 4:24head coaches.
- 4:24So maybe they'd just, you know, be like,
- 4:26you and I working together, possibly Ricardo,
- 4:28just really annoying.
- 4:29Yeah.
- 4:30I think the other thing as well is,
- 4:32I think it's very difficult to go from being a current
- 4:37provincial or a franchise coach into that role as All Black
- 4:43Coach.
- 4:43I think and that's probably something that made it very difficult
- 4:47for Scott Robertson as well, because he's got
- 4:50a such a strong crusader's culture that's worked for him.
- 4:54And now it's difficult because it needs to be
- 4:57an All Black culture.
- 4:58It can't be a crusader's culture that all the other guys
- 5:01needs to adapt.
- 5:02And I think with Dave Rene, he's been in the systems
- 5:07in New Zealand.
- 5:08Now he's been away a little bit.
- 5:10So he comes in and he's starting something new.
- 5:12He's going to start like a,
- 5:13this is the All Black culture I want.
- 5:15It's not coming from the crusaders or the Highlanders
- 5:18or the Hurricanes or whoever.
- 5:20So or the Blues.
- 5:22So I think that probably helps a little bit as well.
- 5:26He actually referred to that in the press conference where he said,
- 5:31you know, the good thing is I don't have any preferences
- 5:33towards players.
- 5:35You know, I'm coming from being overseas for nine years.
- 5:37So everyone's got to earn the jersey from scratch, you know.
- 5:40So that was obviously something very important to him.
- 5:42One of the other things that he said a couple of times
- 5:45in his press conference was that he said it's one of his strengths
- 5:49of putting good people around him.
- 5:51So, you know, it's going to be fascinating, J.K.
- 5:54who he does have around him out where he holds on
- 5:56to the current group of assistant coaches
- 5:58where there brings his own people.
- 5:59What do you think?
- 6:01I think he'll understand the difference in roles
- 6:04and understand the different pressure
- 6:06that his assistance will be under.
- 6:09From what I've heard, Jason Ryan came through the review positively.
- 6:15So he's probably someone that you'd keep on board for continuity.
- 6:18Because I do think continuity around players,
- 6:20like whether or look like,
- 6:22whether your selection is still starting from scratch,
- 6:24you're probably going to start with 30 players that have been there before.
- 6:28You know, you're not going to start with 30 new players.
- 6:30So I think continuity is going to be very important.
- 6:32I think he'll understand, like, he got Wayne Smith involved with the Chiefs.
- 6:36I think he'll understand the next level
- 6:38and I think he'll look around the world
- 6:39for people that he might have worked with.
- 6:41And they might be with him in Kobaydo, no,
- 6:43but I think he'll go, okay.
- 6:45So you're saying around the world.
- 6:46So you're thinking they might not be New Zealanders?
- 6:50No, I don't think I think you'll have some foreigners.
- 6:52Did you not listen to his press conference for Cardi?
- 6:54I'm asking you a question.
- 6:55For people in the Southern hemisphere,
- 6:57stopped being so annoying,
- 6:58thinking that Super Rugby and our Rugby is the beast.
- 7:01That's exactly what he's seeking.
- 7:03So I think you'll make a mistake
- 7:06to go with the current coaches, assistant coaches.
- 7:13If he maybe keeps one or two of them,
- 7:16but I think as a coach,
- 7:17you need guys around you that think about the game like you do.
- 7:23People that you trust, people that you've worked with,
- 7:25people that you know will strengthen your weaknesses.
- 7:29So it will be interesting to see if it keeps the guys.
- 7:32But I think if I was a head coach,
- 7:34I would like to want to come in.
- 7:36I would like to bring my own guys.
- 7:38The guys I trust, the guys I know think about the game.
- 7:42So we can argue, but we still have the same idea about the game.
- 7:47So I would be surprised if you keep all the assistant coaches.
- 7:51Well, I think Victor Watt has said,
- 7:53and also Ricardo, he said one big thing,
- 7:55he said, I need people who I trust.
- 7:57And I think that's, like, this is a hard job.
- 8:00What people don't realise is it gets really creaky
- 8:03and you've got to be in the same trench together.
- 8:05Like, and if you lose a couple, it gets,
- 8:07you know, when you think about,
- 8:08and I think your point about provincial coaches
- 8:11is a good one, Victor.
- 8:11When you think about stakeholders,
- 8:14like if you're coaching, you know,
- 8:16Transval, then you've got those stakeholders.
- 8:18But when you coached South Africa,
- 8:20you got the whole country and it's same with New Zealand.
- 8:21So, you know, I think, you know,
- 8:24I think he will have the ability.
- 8:26And he did say that some other Japanese team
- 8:29would beat the rugby teams,
- 8:31but I just don't believe that.
- 8:33I don't think that is good as some of the right choices.
- 8:37So I mean level you.
- 8:39First of all, you just gave your age away
- 8:41talking about Transval.
- 8:42They haven't been Transval for 30 years,
- 8:44but I don't agree.
- 8:49Look, I think that Top League in Japan
- 8:52is a great league for them.
- 8:53And it's nice to watch this great attacking rugby.
- 8:57But I think the physicality in the back
- 9:00forwards just on their stall.
- 9:03So I think he's taking a leap of faith there.
- 9:07But I mean, we've seen with South Africa.
- 9:10I mean, players playing in Japan,
- 9:12coming over there,
- 9:13only played 10 games a year.
- 9:15They only played in the national.
- 9:17The bodies are fresh.
- 9:18It's a forced game, especially for the backs.
- 9:22So the guys come back very fit from the Japanese league.
- 9:26So maybe he's fighting to get New Zealand
- 9:28to think differently about this.
- 9:30Players playing abroad.
- 9:32And players that he can pick for New Zealand as well.
- 9:34Because I still think, I mean,
- 9:36there's few players,
- 9:37Ruttelec,
- 9:39Frizal,
- 9:40Mohanga,
- 9:42that will make a huge impact in that New Zealand team.
- 9:46He talked about Ruttelec.
- 9:47I mean, Ruttelec is the top
- 9:48tricesterer in the Japanese competition at the moment.
- 9:51And I don't know if you saw the highlights from the weekend,
- 9:53but he ran,
- 9:55like he was, they were 70 points up and he still ran down
- 9:58and did an ankle tap to save a try.
- 10:00I mean, he's playing out of his skin.
- 10:03I mean, would you expect to see Brodie Ruttelec
- 10:06back in all black colors?
- 10:07If he's a valedict of my answer.
- 10:10The thing is, I think the most important thing
- 10:14and we were talking as a bunch of
- 10:16um, ex-all blacks last time we got together,
- 10:19it's a project.
- 10:20This is a 15th month project.
- 10:22I mean, he's not even going to be here
- 10:24for a month before the July tests.
- 10:27You know, this is not ideal.
- 10:29So it's a project.
- 10:30And I think someone like Brodie Ruttelec
- 10:32is just an outstanding lot,
- 10:34but also a great leader.
- 10:36You know, um, does he want to do it?
- 10:37Does he want to come back?
- 10:38Would he want to do that sort of stuff?
- 10:41I don't know.
- 10:42But I think what Dave will be going is,
- 10:44this is a project for 15 months.
- 10:45I'm going to do whatever I can
- 10:47to get us in the situation to win South Africa.
- 10:50I mean, two, two things for you,
- 10:52but he's got a very good win record again.
- 10:54South Africa with Australia.
- 10:56So that's good 72%.
- 10:57So you guys should be shaking in your boots.
- 11:01But the second thing.
- 11:02That's a little russier stuff, isn't it?
- 11:04That was before russier came in.
- 11:07Yeah, I don't know.
- 11:08I'm not worried about it.
- 11:09I'm just taking 72%.
- 11:11And then the other thing he did mention,
- 11:13which I think we're all aware of,
- 11:15unless you guys throw a game,
- 11:17is we're going to be meeting in the quarter final.
- 11:20So teams that have probably never been knocked out
- 11:23in the quarter final stages ever before,
- 11:26one of us is going to get knocked out.
- 11:27So he's already got that in mind.
- 11:28So it's a, that it's a massive,
- 11:31it's a massive project.
- 11:33And it's a 15 month project.
- 11:34So there was a great answer.
- 11:35But when we talk about Brady Ritalaka,
- 11:37I was actually, I just want to go.
- 11:39You still need to be to straight up first
- 11:41so to be neat doesn't a quarter finals.
- 11:45What do you mean?
- 11:46What do you mean?
- 11:47Look at that.
- 11:48So, what do you say?
- 11:49What do you say?
- 11:50Gami says beaten the crusaders,
- 11:53the rates has beaten the hurricanes.
- 11:56Things are happening there.
- 11:57All right, it's a happy day for New Zealand rugby.
- 11:59We've just appointed the coach.
- 12:01Yeah, I'm just going to bring us down.
- 12:03Yeah.
- 12:04But you're already playing the psychological games.
- 12:07But he did say that he's excited about the greatest rovariever
- 12:10where we go back and win since 1996,
- 12:14a series away.
- 12:15And even if we aren't playing Transval,
- 12:18which I'm really annoyed about,
- 12:19I don't exist anymore.
- 12:21I'm not playing Transval, but you're playing the Lions.
- 12:24You're playing the Lions.
- 12:26All right, just call them Transval.
- 12:27Don't get the Lions effect, man.
- 12:30Did you ever play for Northern Transval?
- 12:32I did when I was like 19 years old,
- 12:35and then they changed to the Bulls.
- 12:38And I told you what I said.
- 12:39I'm following the 21.
- 12:41You're old as well, so.
- 12:44So, what's the reaction in South Africa?
- 12:47You know, you've been poking fun of us for the last few months
- 12:50because we don't have a coach.
- 12:51But now we have a coach.
- 12:53How do you think the all blacks will shape up
- 12:55against South Africa?
- 12:57Yeah, I mean, we're talking about the greatest rivalry.
- 13:01I've seen it at a chat in the week.
- 13:04And people ask, next World Cup,
- 13:06can South Africa win it again?
- 13:08I said, of course, we can.
- 13:09But I still believe there's only three teams
- 13:11that come in the next World Cup in that South Africa.
- 13:14Or New Zealand or France.
- 13:16I think those three teams will be in a different class.
- 13:20Those guys can beat each other on any day.
- 13:23Anyone can beat anyone.
- 13:24So, the all blacks will always be there.
- 13:27I still feel for Scott Robinson.
- 13:29I mean, he's probably the best,
- 13:31provincial club coach ever to come out of New Zealand.
- 13:35And, yeah, it's a pretty grint pool things together with all blacks.
- 13:40But the all blacks is going to be tough,
- 13:43even if we play them four times at home.
- 13:46And again, I mean, Scott Robinson,
- 13:48that three away starts against the current World Champions.
- 13:52So, it wasn't easy for him.
- 13:55And Dave Rene is going into the same thing.
- 13:58It's not two games at home.
- 13:59Two games in South Africa.
- 14:00Three games in South Africa.
- 14:03That's what he starts with.
- 14:04So, it's not going to be an easy start.
- 14:06But I mean, it still stays to all blacks.
- 14:09All blacks, there's a spring box.
- 14:10Anything can happen.
- 14:12You know, I think the thing I'm excited about,
- 14:15and I agree with you know, like,
- 14:17you know, we can never forget the human side of this.
- 14:20And Razer losing his job is tough.
- 14:23I think the interesting thing about Dave Rene is he does come
- 14:28from a little bit of a different philosophy
- 14:30about Harry wants to play.
- 14:32I do think he's a heads up.
- 14:34Play what's in front of you.
- 14:35I do think he sees that as a New Zealand start.
- 14:38I do think that he wants to have tough forward packs
- 14:41that are dominating, especially defensive rucks.
- 14:45He'll want hard players that are going to be really on the edge.
- 14:49He will bring a bit of edge.
- 14:51So, I think he's got that nice balance.
- 14:53And I think what your average New Zealander wants
- 14:56is we want a game that we can identify with.
- 15:01You know, and we talk about your DNA.
- 15:03And so, therefore, you talk about the RS DNA.
- 15:05We talk about all this sort of stuff.
- 15:06But for a New Zealander, it's really, really important
- 15:08that when we're watching, we feel
- 15:10that we're playing a style of game.
- 15:12We're not following trends.
- 15:13Like, I'll kick it 60 times or, you know,
- 15:15so Africa's really good at putting up the high ball.
- 15:18So, we should do it.
- 15:19So, I think he will bring a little bit of a different approach,
- 15:22which I'm excited about.
- 15:24Yeah, and he's also got, and Kabe's got Ardi Sabia.
- 15:27He's obviously a pretty important person
- 15:29in the All Black makeup.
- 15:30So, you know, there was some talk,
- 15:34you know, just reading some of the media reports about,
- 15:36you know, that Dave really had a lot of support
- 15:38from the current players.
- 15:40But this question for you, Victor,
- 15:42how important do you think the player's opinion
- 15:45should be of a coach?
- 15:48Yeah, it's so difficult.
- 15:51I mean, at the end of our careers,
- 15:54we probably had a lot of say, as well, about the coach.
- 15:57But it's always difficult.
- 15:58If a coach picks you, you're always going to back him.
- 16:02If he doesn't pick you, you want someone else.
- 16:04So, I don't think the players should ever say
- 16:07and use the coach.
- 16:08And we've seen it with Russell.
- 16:10I mean, he's changed it completely with South Africa,
- 16:13where the players come in, they do what they do.
- 16:16Yes, of course, they've got an input on how they want to play.
- 16:19But whatever Russell say, every he picks,
- 16:21he needs to perform.
- 16:22And if someone throws his stories because he's not picked,
- 16:26or he doesn't play in a big game,
- 16:28if he doesn't start in a big game,
- 16:30Russell will just cut him.
- 16:31So, the coach cut to the side,
- 16:33what's the best for the team,
- 16:35and the players needs to follow that.
- 16:37Yeah, I don't know if I totally agree.
- 16:40I think the players, and if you're trying to build a culture,
- 16:44I think the players are a fundamental part of it now.
- 16:45And they're way bigger stakeholder
- 16:48than we used to be.
- 16:51I think they need to buy into the
- 16:56belief of the coach,
- 16:57but they can't ever say use the coach.
- 17:00No, I agree with that.
- 17:01But I think if you're assessing a new coach,
- 17:05and I don't know if they spoke to modern players, Ricardo,
- 17:08but I think what I understood from the press conference was
- 17:12David Kirk went and asked players
- 17:15that had been coached by Dave Renny.
- 17:17And I think that's a good point.
- 17:19I think that what happens,
- 17:21what we're talking about is,
- 17:23you know, with this last process,
- 17:26what I hope happened and what I believed happened
- 17:29was the process was correct.
- 17:31So, nothing was personal.
- 17:33They just asked the players the right question.
- 17:36At the end of the day,
- 17:37we're playing big stakes now.
- 17:38And I think the players should never pick the coach,
- 17:41but they can have an opinion on the style of play
- 17:45and what they're doing,
- 17:45but that's really the coach's job
- 17:47to make sure that he gets that culture right
- 17:50and that everyone feels that they're contributing to it.
- 17:53But I think what they said today, Ricardo,
- 17:55was they asked players that have been coached by Dave.
- 17:58And I'm sure they asked the same of Jamie.
- 18:01And I think they both would have come back
- 18:03with really good reports.
- 18:06I think the difference between Dave
- 18:08and Jamie would have come down to,
- 18:11I think Dave's got more experience internationally.
- 18:14And I think the current board
- 18:19think that's important because they think
- 18:21that that was one of the negatives of Razor.
- 18:23He didn't have that international experience.
- 18:25And like I said,
- 18:27if you coach the transfer,
- 18:29then those people love it.
- 18:30You coach South Africa.
- 18:31You got the whole country.
- 18:32And when you're dealing with brands like,
- 18:35you know, the All Blacks in South Africa,
- 18:37that's a world wide thing.
- 18:38Every South African.
- 18:39And there's a lot of them living in New Zealand
- 18:40in Australia and they are South African fans.
- 18:43And same with Kiwis, we're all over the world.
- 18:46So you've got to get that.
- 18:48You've got to get that right.
- 18:49Sort of ironic though,
- 18:50because they're saying that we need a coach
- 18:53with international experience,
- 18:54top level international experience
- 18:56and that's given Dave really the edge.
- 18:58But we just got rid of a coach
- 18:59that's just gained two years of international experience.
- 19:02So we sort of said to Razor,
- 19:05I mean, I don't want to sort of go back.
- 19:06Was that a good or bad decision?
- 19:07But we picked the guy.
- 19:10We gave him the opportunity
- 19:11to gain some international experience.
- 19:13Then we got rid of him.
- 19:14Yeah, I think that's a very singular approach
- 19:18to probably why it happened.
- 19:21I think there was a series of things.
- 19:23The pressure,
- 19:25the style of rugby,
- 19:27the culture that I think there was a whole lot
- 19:28of different things in that.
- 19:30And honestly,
- 19:32you know, I coached international rugby,
- 19:34not at the highest level.
- 19:35But, you know, in the second tier,
- 19:37so Italy and Japan, which I loved,
- 19:41when I came back to the Blues,
- 19:42there was way more pressure on me on the Blues
- 19:45than there was coaching Italy or Japan.
- 19:48Because, you know,
- 19:49we wouldn't beat the Asian teams
- 19:51and if we won one game,
- 19:52you know, we beat Fiji,
- 19:54we won the Pacific Nation's Cup.
- 19:55It was fantastic.
- 19:56Went to the World Cup and drew with Canada.
- 19:57That was a success, you know.
- 19:59But this is New Zealanders expect us to win.
- 20:02They expect us to win against South Africa over there.
- 20:06And I think the other point for me is
- 20:08that World Rugby has changed.
- 20:10And Dave Rennie was very forthright
- 20:12and saying that today, you know,
- 20:14the World Game has changed.
- 20:16And there's a lot of good coaches
- 20:17and there's a lot of good players
- 20:18and there's a lot of good rugby going on
- 20:20outside New Zealand.
- 20:21I've got to say that Dave Rennie was.
- 20:24And he was very...
- 20:25They gave him the first set of one.
- 20:26They gave him the first set of one.
- 20:28Ta-dan?
- 20:29Students at all blacks just lower their expectations a little there.
- 20:32Yeah, well...
- 20:33That's the most...
- 20:35I mean, have you been drinking that
- 20:36but a clip-off or whatever that shutters you drink?
- 20:38Have you been drinking this morning
- 20:39before you go to work?
- 20:41Like, come home.
- 20:42No, but I mean with Dave Rennie saying,
- 20:44I mean, I don't think...
- 20:46And maybe you might have another golden era.
- 20:48But I don't think you're going to get teams
- 20:51having an 85, 80% win record,
- 20:54like the all blacks that are in the old.
- 20:56And I mean, that's why they...
- 20:57The greatest team of all time.
- 20:59But like Dave Rennie said, I mean,
- 21:01France, England, Ireland.
- 21:03Everyone is up there, Australia.
- 21:06I don't think we ever going to see again
- 21:08that one international team wins over 80% in a year.
- 21:13Look, I don't not disagree with you.
- 21:16But I think one thing that the all blacks,
- 21:19if they lose, we need to lose by one or two points
- 21:22and it goes down to the wire
- 21:23against the top five or six in the world.
- 21:26Like, I think what really surprised us was
- 21:28getting smashed in the second half
- 21:30by you guys and losing by 20
- 21:32and then losing to England after being...
- 21:34Like, we just...
- 21:35We want to see a style of game
- 21:37and we want to see an attitude
- 21:38that we can identify with.
- 21:40I don't think we have the expectations
- 21:42of we're going to win everything.
- 21:44But like, we wouldn't want to be whitewashed
- 21:46when we come to South Africa.
- 21:47We want whoever wins it to be winning the series.
- 21:50And you go, shit, we're going to...
- 21:51You remember, Ricardo, when we played Australia,
- 21:54here we lost the series.
- 21:56But across the whole series,
- 21:57there was same amount of points scored
- 21:59and it was just two really good teams
- 22:01going against each other.
- 22:02That's that I get.
- 22:04You know, I get...
- 22:04I don't think New Zealanders will go,
- 22:06we want to win all the time anymore.
- 22:07But we want to have a standard that we've got to keep.
- 22:10A style of rugby and a standard that we're going to keep.
- 22:13And if we're going to lose,
- 22:14we're going down right...
- 22:15You know, it's right to the wire.
- 22:16Two things really stood out for me
- 22:18that not that anyone cares what I think about,
- 22:20especially you.
- 22:21But one is that we seem to mature
- 22:25a little bit as a rugby country
- 22:26because growing up during the...
- 22:28You know, you're either a griswiley man
- 22:29or a John Hartman or a Lowry man's man.
- 22:32There seems to be quite a...
- 22:34You know, Scott Robinson, Jamie Joseph, Dave Renny,
- 22:37all really good people
- 22:41that everyone was really comfortable with as people.
- 22:43You know, that they seemed to be...
- 22:44I thought Dave Renny was excellent
- 22:47in the press conference today.
- 22:49He gave plenty of praise and respect to Jamie Joseph.
- 22:54You know, obviously Jamie had given the same back to him.
- 22:56It seems to be a...
- 22:58A lot more mature than maybe you and I are.
- 23:01Well, you're a mature.
- 23:03You always had been.
- 23:04But it's just the hardest job in the world, Ricardo.
- 23:07Like, it's just a really hard job
- 23:09and anyone who's been there
- 23:10and understands that pressure
- 23:12will have respect for anyone else who's doing it.
- 23:13When you look at the NBA,
- 23:15I'm not a basketballer,
- 23:16but I look around their courts
- 23:18and they're always the same coaches.
- 23:19There might be a young guy that comes pops in
- 23:21but then all the same coaches do the same.
- 23:23It's such a hard job on you, on your family,
- 23:26from a pressure point of view,
- 23:27expectations.
- 23:28So, you know, they have a mutual respect
- 23:30and that's how it should be.
- 23:31Now, I wouldn't, you know,
- 23:33put them across the white line
- 23:34and it becomes competitive
- 23:36like I would be with Victor.
- 23:38But it's just hard job.
- 23:39Oh, yeah.
- 23:40Coaching's a hard job.
- 23:41Well, the one thing about all Black coaches
- 23:43and I think Scott Robertson
- 23:45is probably a bit younger.
- 23:47Most of them have come through almost
- 23:50all Black culture.
- 23:51They've been assistant coaches for long.
- 23:54They've worked in the game.
- 23:55They've been in the game.
- 23:56They're guys that's really respectful
- 23:58to everyone in rugby.
- 24:01And they just good people.
- 24:02And I think that's what Dave Rene is as well.
- 24:05I think he'll be a guy that drives culture,
- 24:09that they have respect for everyone,
- 24:10the players, everyone around him.
- 24:12And I mean, that's all you actually need.
- 24:14I mean, with the talent that the all Blacks have
- 24:17within your country,
- 24:18you just need someone to put them
- 24:20in the right direction,
- 24:21give them a little bit of direction
- 24:22and now you want to play it.
- 24:23But you're worried.
- 24:24Sounds like you're worried, Victor.
- 24:26Sounds like you're worried, mate.
- 24:28Just trying to make it that there's going to be
- 24:29a competition this rival, sir.
- 24:31We're not going to ask questions.
- 24:32Just trying to...
- 24:33You know what, it's interesting.
- 24:34I reckon two tests in when we're two to zip up.
- 24:38And there's been some controversial moments
- 24:41Victor will be going,
- 24:42that Dave Rene, what a cheater.
- 24:43Can't believe he's doing that.
- 24:44He can't believe he's here.
- 24:46Why is the worst person in the world?
- 24:48It's nice to get it out there only
- 24:50before the series starts.
- 24:52I know we're joking about it.
- 24:54But I just think that rugby needs
- 24:56to make sure that it keeps the human side.
- 24:58You know, I know that.
- 25:00And I don't want to keep going back to Razor
- 25:01because we need to move on
- 25:03and he'll probably doesn't want to be talked about either.
- 25:06But, you know, we can't forget the human factor.
- 25:08We can't forget that Dave's a buddy,
- 25:11good man.
- 25:11And so is Jamie.
- 25:12And we need to take some of that rivalry.
- 25:16Not our stuff, Victor, but some of that out of, you know.
- 25:19Keep the respect.
- 25:20Yeah, keep the respect.
- 25:21Make sure that rugby keeps the respect.
- 25:23Make sure we keep the human side of it.
- 25:24Keep our game as it should be,
- 25:27you know, sitting down after the game.
- 25:29On the field, kick the shit out each other
- 25:30but then off the game,
- 25:32sitting down and having a beer.
- 25:33Yeah.
- 25:34Now, the other thing is, I think there's so many
- 25:37different type of coaches out there.
- 25:39I mean, in South Africa,
- 25:41we have Russia that's out of the box
- 25:43and we do things different than any other coach.
- 25:46Then you have a guy like you on from a front
- 25:49with both who's really successful.
- 25:51But it's like an old style,
- 25:54believe in values and all these things.
- 25:56Then you've got a franca smith.
- 25:58Again, different with Glasgow.
- 26:00And these guys are all great coaches
- 26:02and they can all be successful at this level.
- 26:05It's just a lot of the time in coaching.
- 26:08It's the right timing,
- 26:09right people around you.
- 26:11And I'm telling you now,
- 26:12there's no chance Razor won't come back.
- 26:14You'll go, you'll coach somewhere,
- 26:16you'll be successful.
- 26:17You'll go coach international get experience.
- 26:20And maybe one day comes back to New Zealand
- 26:23or even South Africa and when it will come.
- 26:25You never know.
- 26:26And for Victor, this watching this show
- 26:29is a bit like watching those two old guys
- 26:31at the Muppets that sit in there
- 26:33and they're sort of yelling from the Peter.
- 26:37Speak for yourself.
- 26:38See?
- 26:39Well, I made thanks.
- 26:41Thanks for your time.
- 26:42Go back, go back and finish that branding
- 26:44before you go to work.
- 26:46Oh, no, I just finished my battle game.
- 26:48And I'm going to do the battle.
- 26:51Do you play battle?
- 26:52No, no, no, no.
- 26:53That's not my thing.
- 26:54So now I need to go to work for a bit.
- 26:56Cheers boys.
- 26:57And I'm glad it lost my coach.
- 26:59Fantastic.
