- 13:00Jackson Lewis nominated for National Award for Banjo Performer of
- 13:04the Year by Hayley Adams. A West Liberty, Kentucky native
- 13:08and Moorhead State faculty member, has been nominated for a
- 13:12national award. Daxton Lewis, the director of the Kentucky Center
- 13:16for the Traditional Music at Moorhead State University, has been
- 13:20nominated for a Banjo Performer of the Year at Society
- 13:24for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America's fifty first
- 13:29Annual fifty first Annual Bluegrass Music Awards. Lewis has played
- 13:35the banjo for almost twenty three years and said his
- 13:38interest in the five string instrument began at a very
- 13:42young age. I spent a lot of time with my
- 13:45paternal grandparents, and while I was with them, they often
- 13:48had music playing, either at home or in the car.
- 13:52That music was often bluegrass gospel music, and I was
- 13:56drawn to a particular sound, said Lewis. Eventually I realized
- 14:00it was a five string banjo, and I would sit
- 14:03close to the speakers or get headphones to try to
- 14:06dial in and really listen to the five string banjo.
- 14:11I just knew that I wanted to do that. When
- 14:14Lewis turned eleven years old, his parents gave him a
- 14:17banjo for Christmas, which jump started his musical journey. Lewis
- 14:22has played with several bands over the years, but is
- 14:24currently a member of two bands, including David Parmley Band
- 14:29and The McLaine Family Band. David Palmley said Lewis has
- 14:35been a part of the band for over two years
- 14:37and said Louis showmanship makes him stand out amongst other musicians.
- 14:43He smiles, he acts like he's having a good time,
- 14:46said Parmly. He is a very versatile in fact that
- 14:51he does not just play one style. He can play
- 14:54traditional scrugs type banjo, but he can also play some
- 14:57Scott Vestel who would do which is important because my
- 15:02music has been a wide variety through the years, so
- 15:05I need somebody who can play all of that, and
- 15:08Daxton fits the bill perfectly. Raymond McLain, the director of
- 15:14Kentucky Center for the Traditional Music at Morehead State University,
- 15:18while Lewis was a student in the program. McLain said,
- 15:22it is important to recognize the people who are helping
- 15:25preserve bluegrass music. I think it's wonderful that people like
- 15:29Daxton Lewis are so involved not only in the caring
- 15:33of these traditions, but developing these traditions and preserving them
- 15:37at the same time taking them a step further and
- 15:41making them revelent to modern times, which are very well,
- 15:45but they are part of our traditions, said in McLain.
- 15:49It is important that people like Daxton are taking the
- 15:53ball and running with it because it's who we are,
- 15:56not only in the past, but right on into the future.
- 16:01Although this is Lewis's second time being nominated for the award,
- 16:05he said he was shocked, as he was when he
- 16:08first got nominated. Well, it means the world to me
- 16:11that enough folks voted to get me in on the list,
- 16:15just to be nominated with folks like Kristin Scott Benson,
- 16:19Chris Wade, and Aaron mcdaris is a huge honor, said Lewis.
- 16:24Winners for each category will be announced at the sp
- 16:28BGMA fifty first Annual Bluegrass Music Awards and the forty
- 16:34second National Convention Saturday, January seventeenth. Our next article is

- 16:47new tax deductions. Washington taxpayers may be able to take
- 16:51advantage of new deductions that could reduce taxbuble income and
