Transcript
- 0:00You heard it for decades from your parents and their parents before them. You've
- 0:05seen it most recently shared on social media. You have to check your kid's
- 0:09candy because there's a pretty good chance. Nobody says there's a pretty good chance.
- 0:13Now you're just adding some wild comedy, some illicit drugs or razor blades
- 0:18in there. Crazy people out there. And I already told you my mom
- 0:24said there was a razor in my apple when I was a little girl.
- 0:26I was trying to stare you. So, Amanda, I know you don't
- 0:30believe me when I say that this is all fiction. It's all just urban
- 0:33legend. So I actually found some evidence, some research, some data,
- 0:37if you will, I can't wait. Thanks for presenting it to our audience
- 0:40today. This is a report from NPR. Now they've consulted with Joel Best,
- 0:46who is a professor of sociology and criminal justice at the University of Delaware
- 0:51and Amanda since the nineteen eighties, has studied contaminated candy. Is not from
- 0:57Havid, I don't care. It's literally this man's life's work study the sort
- 1:00of thing he did. He go through my candy as a kid. I
- 1:04don't remember John Best Joel Best, Joel Best at my house with some respect
- 1:10on his name. Best, mister Best wasn't at my house, all right,
- 1:14Well, he says that quote. This is absolutely a legend, and
- 1:18not a particularly great legend at that. He says, I have data going
- 1:22back to nineteen fifty eight, and I have yet to find a report of
- 1:26a child that's been killed or seriously hurt by a contaminated treat picked up in
- 1:32the course of trick or treating. That's actual information, Amanda. So I
- 1:37don't know what we would do without your data. All I'm trying to do
- 1:40is put parents mind at ease. Yeah, but we still go through the
- 1:42candy. That's just what you do. Well, he says, you don't
- 1:46need to. He does say there is one case of a man in Texas
- 1:49murdering his own son with poison candy. However, it was only because he
- 1:52thought it would be the perfect crime, because he thought children constantly got poisoned
- 1:56like that, not the case that was the only one. Seapike right now,
- 2:00with all these papers flailing as though you were doing a research report for
- 2:04us, and that we care, literally, I mean not we care.
- 2:07I'm just in general, we're gonna go through a kid's candy no matter what.
- 2:10There was one case of a girl in Los Angeles who died from a
- 2:14congenital heart problem. The media originally reported as a candy contamination, but the
- 2:19autopsy revealed otherwise. We've stopped believing in ghosts and goblins, said Joel Best,
- 2:28but we believe in criminals. Okay, Pike. There's a lot of
- 2:32creepy people out there. You don't know what they're gonna do yet. I
- 2:36mean, just in general, do you even eat the candy that you can
- 2:38untwist? Usually not outside of the fruit is, of course, at a
- 2:42parade, wet tutsi rolls, You literally don't eat tutti rolls because of the
- 2:45now Twisty's just in general, if they look like they might have been tampered
- 2:49with, I'm gonna toss them. Well, just garbage. That's just a
- 2:53good general rule of thumb. You don't eat suspicious looking food. Oh really,
- 2:55Pike. So basically what you're saying right now is mister Best is garbage.
- 3:00Mister Best is not garbage. He didn't go through all the suspicious.
- 3:04It's a man who's doing the Lord's work for decades now, Amanda. He
- 3:07said he's never inspected his children's Halloween candy and doesn't think it's necessary for parents
- 3:12to do so. You know what, he dressed up for Halloween as a
- 3:15bad dad. Really, I'm sure you'd love to hear that. Now,
- 3:20are you literally going through every piece? I'm talking like a little box of
- 3:23dots, which, by the way, we were talking candy earlier, you
- 3:25got to mention dots. No, I go nuts for dots. Nobody else
- 3:29likes dots. They're so sticky. Yeah, they're sticky, they get stuck
- 3:32in your teeth. You save it for later. Yeah, No, I'm
- 3:35not a fan of those. Uh yeah, I'm gonna go through every box,
- 3:38and I'm not gonna open the box. If they're not open, then
- 3:42I'm not gonna do anything. If they're a little damage, probably toss it.
- 3:45Not that I need any more evidence, because obviously I don't want to
- 3:47uncrinkle this report. I had plenty. But if you would like to weigh
- 3:51in on whether or not you're checking your kids candy for drugs, razors knives
- 3:57all right, angry bear, it's active handgrend Aids seven seven, Good morning.
- 4:03I got a side with Pike in the same age I think it's pretty
- 4:09common to check your kid's candy when you first start trick or treating. But
- 4:12the only time I check it now is to collect my candy tax. Think
- 4:15out what I want to eat. Of course, the state issued candy tacks.
- 4:20What was your name, Cindy? All right, Cindy, Well,
- 4:24thank you for being wise beyond your years of sounds a Manda will learn one
- 4:28of these years. She's just it's futile, the copter mom. At least
- 4:32it's not the homemade candy popcorn balls anymore. So it's we should be good.
- 4:36Oh gross, I almost always had knives in them, like in the
- 4:41morning, Big Naty eight point seven. Some people just really get into Halloween.
- 4:46Yes, you know, with the costumes. We just had our our
- 4:47guy James from the Afternoon shall walk in dresses who rip rip ripped, Tamlin
- 4:53rip who rip? But from Yellowstone. You're the only one on the planet
- 4:56that hasn't gotten into Yellowstone yet if it wasn't you know Yahoo, Plus it's
- 5:01whatever actually currently on CBS. Never heard of I don't. Okay, guys,
- 5:09Well, there's people that get into Halloween, and then there's people like
- 5:12this guy who despise the holiday, Amanda, this man has been arrested after
- 5:16a string of arson. He's an arsonist. He was literally going around setting
- 5:21Halloween decorations on fire. Ba humbug whatever the Halloween version of that is.
- 5:29Goblin, I don't know. He was goblin, all right, goblin prison
- 5:34sentences anyway. This guy's thirty four years old. Not only was he setting
- 5:40Halloween decorations on fire, he was also caught on a ring camera decapitating inflatable
- 5:46Halloween decoration. Oh my gosh, I was decapitating. What. Yeah,
- 5:53he's a murder He's a crazy murderer. No, it's just Halloween. You
- 5:56know. It's just so ridiculous that people even just even this mashing of the
- 6:00pumpkins, any of that stuff. Just stop. It's funny bring that up,
- 6:02because I was going to sort of use this as an opportunity to apologize
- 6:06for your youth, apologize for my transgressions as a youngster, you know,
- 6:11running around the town of Dilworth. My friends and I would just cause mischief,
- 6:15get into any little thing we could, you know, for example,
- 6:17throwing pumpkins. I remember doing that really, and there was one particular moment
- 6:20that I'm not proud of I hate to even share this, and I'm going
- 6:25to have to do so tastefully. But there was in Dilworth a decoration on
- 6:30the porch of a house and it was like it was like a scarecrow,
- 6:33like a stuffed scarecrow yep. And so I thought it would be funny because
- 6:38I was a guy just trying to get a laugh. All my friends were
- 6:40standing in the street watching as I approached his house knocked on the door on
- 6:44Halloween night. So you were acting as though you were trick or treating?
- 6:46Or were you trick? I'm wearing a full costume, by the way,
- 6:49mask. What age are you of? Sophomore in high school? Okay,
- 6:54sixteen years old? And so when the poor couple opened the door expecting to
- 6:59see some young older and that, you know, trick or treat, I
- 7:01was defiling the scarecrow. Wow, okay, gotcha. You were just you
- 7:10were such a punk. The worst we did. We used to have a
- 7:13contests would be the guys versus the girls on Halloween when we were sayd sophomores,
- 7:18and so we had the wild idea we were going to get the guys.
- 7:23So I did get the guys. My girlfriends and I are over at
- 7:26my girlfriend's house and we are stuffing water balloons full of sour krout. I
- 7:30mean just disgusting. That's a lot of work. Well and you know how
- 7:35hard it is to get sourkrout in a balloon? Yeah, I mean,
- 7:39just ridiculous idea. So we were going to try to get them because that's
- 7:42what we would do in Halloween. The older we got just we'd run around
- 7:45Withdina and just cause our own mischief. But not at houses. It's not
- 7:48we weren't throwing sour crowd at homes. Yeah, you guys, we didn't
- 7:51do that either. We did throw some other you know, toilet paper,
- 7:55some of the classics. Kids. Just we're just really bad. Absolutely don't
- 8:01tell what you threw the sour crowd balloons yep, at the guys and they
- 8:03actually explode. Yeah, oh that's horrific. That's horrid balloons. Okay,
- 8:07why they didn't just bounce because sour crowd, I don't know. This is
- 8:11this is just the waters for me. I've never thrown sour crowd Okay,
- 8:16guilty as charge, but never thrown the sour crouch Taken a mana in the
- 8:20morning nine point seven Bnding now here's what you need to know. Well,
- 8:26this is really concerning I drop sold by six different companies and some big ones
- 8:28like Target, Walmart, CBS, right Aid they are doing a recall and
- 8:33these are some of the generic brands. So avoid purchasing them because some of
- 8:37them still are on store shelves they just got the memo. Or if you
- 8:43have your medicine cabinet wherever they are, look at these bottles because the FDA
- 8:46said inspectors found unsanitary conditions and bacteria in the facility producing the eye drops,
- 8:50So people who are using these it could have some sort of infection, but
- 8:54also it could lead to blindness. Like well, you know not how you
- 8:58write up. That's why I always go with like name brand eye drops,
- 9:01like for example, Old Spice as a great line, what is what is
- 9:09wrong with you today? What? Another option would be Nike as a good
- 9:16vising. Oh that one too? Is that one? Is that a good
- 9:18one? So make sure you're checking your eye drops. I always had a
- 9:22really irrational fear of going blind as a kid. I always thought like it
- 9:26would sometimes you know, you get like dark spots in your eyes, like
- 9:28if the lighting is weird or something, and I'm like, oh, this
- 9:31is it. I'm going blind? Would you rather be blind or deaf?
- 9:33I don't know. This is like a hot time. I don't Was this
- 9:37the fun part where we discuss Yeah, I know, I'm trying to think.
- 9:41I seem to have stumped you. You busted. I think she'd probably
- 9:48rather be deaf so she doesn't have to hear this anymore. Today's the last
- 9:52day for bras on Big ninety eight point seven. All months long, we've
- 9:54been teeming up with the Central Health Foundation, Corwin Automotive Group, and of
- 9:58course our friend's over a Das Beverages. So if you're out and about today
- 10:01for Halloween, drink that michelob Ultra neutral Cranberry. Some of the proceeds are
- 10:05going to go to a Cential Health Foundation. And then if you still got
- 10:07that bra laying around and you haven't brought it over to Corwin, it is
- 10:11worth ten dollars. Corwin is writing a check up to twenty thousand dollars ink
- 10:15to everybody who is giving back. And tomorrow the whole crew is coming in
- 10:18and hopefully we're going to be writting a big old check and again that stays
- 10:22here one hundred percent of the proceeds with the Essential Health Foundation giving those comfort
- 10:26care items to people who are going through cancer. Yes, it's so important.
- 10:28It's been a great month already, but let's do one big day,
- 10:31one final push. Yes, way to make that big, big check.
- 10:35And speaking of Halloween, everybody wants to go through their kids Halloween and you're
- 10:41their treats and you're going, Okay, I want this one, this one.
- 10:43If you were to have kids, bike what's the first thing you're grabbing.
- 10:46What's your favorite Halloween candy? Why wouldn't steal from my own children?
- 10:50Oh of course not no, not you. But if I are you asking
- 10:54my favorite candy, because that's Reese's it is recent ay Reese's product. Also
- 10:58always been a big fan of the sh snicker Bar. In fact, I
- 11:01think it is close to the perfect candy. When I was a kid and
- 11:05I was struggling with my weight, you know, my mom would go to
- 11:07the gas station, you know, like moms do, and every time she'd
- 11:09say, I'd get the snicker bar. They had a big one and it
- 11:13was literally called the big one. The big one. Yes, so I'd
- 11:18get a big one every time. Anyway, you had me a little thrown
- 11:20off. I thought you were gonna say the Big Hunk. Do you remember
- 11:24the Big come It used to get stuck and graduated with them. But that
- 11:28was one of my favorite candies. Like that's way throwback. But the experts
- 11:31of weight in the top five candy bars of all time, kit Cat at
- 11:35number five, Reese's Take five. What is that? It's like a pretz
- 11:41Ley thing, right, there's a pretzel in there, all right, Reese's
- 11:45Peanut butter Cups coming at number three, Wicks at number two. See now
- 11:50that's incorrect. Really, Oh I love twigs. I mean they're fine.
- 11:54I guess I'm gonna be carmel guy. Okay, well that's weird because you
- 11:56said Snickers is your favorite, and that is number one in there's caramel,
- 12:00but it's a perfect amount. It makes the gooey nugget. I need a
- 12:03nut, you know, give me that nut? Got it? Well?
- 12:07Like, do you like the salty nut roll? In fact, go get
- 12:15me one right now? Now, let you bring it up. What is
- 12:18your favorite? I'm not hun the Big Hug. I love that. I
- 12:24actually I like the salted nut roll. I like the hundred grand bar.
- 12:28Oh yeah, what am I gonna call it. So that was another one
- 12:31of my favorites. What that is not a thing? Okay, but what
- 12:35am I gonna call it? Oh? Yeah, sorry, I always add
- 12:39words. What you thinking about? What you want? Tell me what you
- 12:43want? All right? Happy Halloween you guys. Wow, we've got a
- 12:48day. First of all, I haven't even looked at the weather because it's
- 12:50a little slippery. Why would I know? Driving in this morning, I'm
- 12:54like, okay, this is a bit aggressive already, so take a little
- 12:56extra time driving in. Some of the roads are still a little dice.
- 13:00It is only going to be twenty eight today, Amanda in the morning on
- 13:05sign and speaking of treats tomorrow, When you found yourself with an abundance of
- 13:13candy laying around the house and kids who want to eat said candy non stop,
- 13:18and you're thinking, wow, that's not very healthy, well yeah,
- 13:20I mean you got to put an end to it at some point. Well,
- 13:22I got a few different options for you. Okay, I got a
- 13:26few different of your options. Here's what you can do with this candy.
- 13:28Of course, you know. Number one, you can just do what my
- 13:31parents did when I was a kid and let the meat all of it at
- 13:33their own pace. Sometimes not happening. No, well I turned out fine.
- 13:39Are you squeshing my parents parenting? I'm not. I'm just just telling
- 13:43you my kids go crazy after having candy, don't want to go to raise.
- 13:48Is this sugar high? I think that's like a myth. It's not,
- 13:50and they just really are you a scientist? I am? Okay,
- 13:56well, sometimes you know they're on one. Today I'm just saying, like,
- 13:58you know, make it not as far as I could. Wait,
- 14:01Well, I would like to record this and then when you have kids,
- 14:03but bike just give your kids all the candy, sun up, just sundown,
- 14:09sugar them up all day, hurry day. Okay, Well, I
- 14:11mean, well, here's another option. Since you didn't like the first one.
- 14:13You can do the trade in. Do a candy trade in where they
- 14:16can each trade increments of ten pieces of candy for something of their to like.
- 14:22You could do new books, so you could say, hey, kids,
- 14:24here's the deal. Ten pieces of candy gets you a new book.
- 14:28Now they're learning ten pieces of candy. No, give me all your candy
- 14:31and you might get a book. Okay, Well, you can decide what
- 14:33the currency is in your aushold. You talked about Yeah, similar, got
- 14:37it. There's the ten minute timer. Another interesting method you could use.
- 14:41This is where tell me more about the ten minute timer. After dinner every
- 14:46night post Halloween, you put a timer on the table and then you give
- 14:50them the bag of candy, set it for ten minutes, ten minutes,
- 14:52and they get to do whatever they'd like with the candy for ten minutes.
- 14:56As soon as the timer's up, you grab that candy and take it away
- 15:00till the next night. Sydney, No, because she knows how to open
- 15:03candy. Now she's getting thirty seconds. Briggsy had give ten minutes because he
- 15:05might get into a piece of candy. But otherwise, oh yeah, no,
- 15:09guy struggles with some of the rappers. Yeah, that's probably better that
- 15:13way, because you know, if you're otherwise going Joey Chestnut on the candy,
- 15:16Yeah, you might end up with a little choking trying to do that.
- 15:20Also another option to do with your Halloween candy, Amanda, consider donating
- 15:22it. Yeah, a lot of people do, like the Halloween buybacks or
- 15:26trade ins and yeah, or even like a you know, there's college campus
- 15:31pantries. You know a lot of the kids struggle with money at college and
- 15:33nice way to give him a little treat. Yeah, candy helps the learning
- 15:37is that, No, it keeps him up at night helps, It helps
- 15:41him study. And the older you get than you want to stay up at
- 15:43night. Got it? These kids taking all these pills. Now, just
- 15:48grab yourself a kit cat. You'll be ready for finals in no time.
- 15:52Is that? Do you know what usually happens? Popa snickers you'll be at
- 15:58the library all I think I like it. I think that's great. Pike,
- 16:03you should put some signs around campus. Now here's another option for the
- 16:07candy, the family jar. It's a family jar system. We've got ourselves
- 16:15a family jar. We had a family jar too, Okay, so what
- 16:18this jar? In particular? This jar system. Everyone gets a jar for
- 16:22themselves that they can put in all the candy they don't want to share,
- 16:26long as it fits in the jar. All the other candy gets put into
- 16:30jars that anyone can eat out of. You can have a chocolate jar,
- 16:33a fruity jar, a sour jar. This is too many jars. You
- 16:37know what ends up happening Tonight. I'll let them those little rascals have some
- 16:41fun, do their thing, and then tomorrow they're gonna beg for it.
- 16:45They're gonna get maybe a couple of pieces, and then what ends up happening
- 16:48is they start forgetting real quick because Mom hides it. Yeah, usually up
- 16:52in the top cupboard or somewhere, and then Mom forgets about it, and
- 16:56I'm like, yeah, and then it just smells. It was like nasty
- 17:00Halloween candy one day, and then I decided to throw it away, probably
- 17:03around Easter when I'm looking forward. Yeah, right, And we always did.
- 17:10My dad put it like on the fridge or whatever, and then you
- 17:11try to climb up there as a kid, but it would all eventually if
- 17:15you let it sit there long enough. Gross, it just all starts to
- 17:17taste the same. Yeah, just snakers taste like Skittles. The Skittles taste
- 17:19like, you know, yeah, candy. You know what I should have
- 17:23done, What I should have kept that parade candy I just threw away.
- 17:26That's what I could have given the kids that came to our house. You
- 17:30cheap skate like a minute in the morning on Big Nutty eight point seven.
- 17:37Ready, let's see it is typing hot today is let's see, let's see.
- 17:45The cast of Friends released a joint statement yesterday reacting to the news of
- 17:49Matthew Perry's death. Just so sad, This said, We're so utterly devastated
- 17:53by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just castmates or a family.
- 17:57There is so much to say right now. Right now, we're just
- 18:00going to take a moment to grieve and process the unfathomable loss. Uh went
- 18:04on to say that in a time in time, maybe we'll say more,
- 18:07but it's just it's so so sad. Yeah, it's hard because you know,
- 18:11they've had a weird relationship with him since the show, obviously, as
- 18:15he was battling addiction everything, and they were going off on their careers.
- 18:18You know, probably not as close as they would have wanted to have been.
- 18:21But he did say though during their reunion that Jennifer Anderson was one of
- 18:23the only ones that always reached out to him. He did make a point
- 18:26to say that, and it almost felt like there was a little bit of
- 18:30not not like a you know, a jab everybody else like yeah, like
- 18:33geez, guys, where have you been? Like, yeah, it's nice
- 18:36to get together, but where the heck you been the last fifteen years?
- 18:40Well, I'm sure, as you know, you you just think of just
- 18:44in regular life, when you're not spending every single day together with somebody like
- 18:48they were, those relationships fade and it does take a lot of work to
- 18:53you know, continue on with a relationship. But then also if somebody is
- 18:57going through a really hard time and you don't know how to deal with it,
- 19:00or maybe you're uncomfortable. I mean, there's just a lot of things
- 19:03that they saw. After hearing what he had to say about his book,
- 19:06I can't even imagine being around that. Yeah, well he even said during
- 19:10that reunion, he said something about you know, I want to say,
- 19:12even being maybe suicidal on during the show. Oh, And it was just
- 19:17one of the more awkward, like sad moments of them going like how we
- 19:18didn't know, Like he didn't, you didn't say anything. We didn't we
- 19:21had no idea you were going through that. But it's all sad, it
- 19:25really is. And just to see the tributes of everybody who's been touched by
- 19:29him, and the fact that I heard that he was just getting ready to
- 19:33open a substance abuse facility, I mean, he's been really working hard towards
- 19:37all of that. Yeah, I felt like he was kind of now finding
- 19:38his place in the world. We played the clip yesterday of him saying that's
- 19:42how he wants to be remembered right. Not is his character from Friends,
- 19:45but because of the way he was helping people, so sad and he guys
- 19:52believe this or not. Selena Gomez is worrying that her bff Taylor Swift is
- 19:56moving too fast with Travis Kelsey. She is not a fan of him or
- 20:00her I guess I should say, going to the games, gallivanting around New
- 20:03York, being spotted already with his mom. I mean, it seems pretty
- 20:08ridiculous. Clear this is total fiction. That's what I'm asking. Do you
- 20:11think it's real or not? Because they're also saying that Taylor Swift invited her
- 20:15to go to a couple Chiefs games and she said she didn't want to be
- 20:18a part of the quote media frenzy. There's also some reports right now that
- 20:22the Kelsey family, I know Jason Kelsey has made a comment or too,
- 20:26just saying it's really a lot for them because Taylor Swift fans in turn Grazie
- 20:33are crazy and they're following them everywhere. The paparazzis all of it. They
- 20:37were famous, but nothing on this level Yeah, Jason Kelsey, you can
- 20:42probably go to the grocery store and be fine, you know what I mean.
- 20:45But he saint even the way that they're treating him just as the brother
- 20:48of Travis. That's so what I'm saying now, Like now he probably can't
- 20:52just go to the grocery store without some Yahoo swifties. Yeah, oh my
- 20:56god. You you you hung out with Taylor one time and you met Can
- 21:00I get a picture with you? I just hope that doesn't detur their relationship.
- 21:03You know, she is in Kansas City right now, so who knows
- 21:07if they're gonna be out and about for Halloween. I wonder what their costumes
- 21:11are going to be, Probably like a ghost what do you think ghosts?
- 21:15I don't know a couple ghosts. I'm trying to think about Ken and Barbie.
- 21:19That'd be kind of cute, Like if everybody's going, you know,
- 21:22my kids are going as Travis and Taylor. If they win as Ken and
- 21:25Barbie, or maybe like a Salt and Pepper ketchup and mustard Rocky and Bullwinkle.
- 21:33So good by thinking of the worst comes, I can think of Miss
- 21:36Piggy and Kermit, Like I'm thinking of all of them. Oh my gosh,
- 21:38would that be great if they just trolled everything funny and Patty Mannis,
- 21:44I forgot all about Doug. Would be a treasure, that would be all
- 21:48right. Speaking to Halloween, Goldie Han is reflecting on an encounter she had
- 21:52with aliens back in her twenties. She was in California. She was a
- 21:56dancer at the time, and she asked one of the dances was asleep in
- 22:00their car for the night. She said, she got this high pitch sound
- 22:03in her ear. It was a high, high frequency. She looked up
- 22:04my window, she said she saw two or three triangular shaped heads. She
- 22:08described the aliens as silver in color, with a slash for a mouth and
- 22:12a tiny little nose. She said they were pointing at me like they were
- 22:15discussing me. I couldn't move. I woke up and thought, am I
- 22:19dreaming this? Well, then it turns out people were starting to talk about
- 22:23things like this. She actually met with an astrophysicist and talked about the encounter,
- 22:30and that's when she remembered that they touched her face on the second was
- 22:33like a finger from God. An astrophysicists, how does he even take that?
- 22:37Meeting it's Goldie Han. Okay, Goldie Han, let me hear about
- 22:41your alien experience. Really, She had me at triangular shaped, silver colored
- 22:47with a slash for a mouth and a tiny little nose. Yeah right, yeah,
