- 0:06Speaker 1: From Hollywood, California.
- 0:08Speaker 2: The Lux Radio Theater presents Jack Benny and Mary Livingston
- 0:11Speaker 2: in Seven Keys to bold Pate.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Nuts Presents Hollywood Tonight. The dauntless Jack Benny and the
- 0:27Speaker 1: laconic Mary Livingston lead us into paths of peril and adventure, laps, chills, crooks, treasures,
- 0:33Speaker 1: a damsel in distress, a mad hermit. This is only
- 0:36Speaker 1: part of what Jack Benny encounters tonight in that grand
- 0:39Speaker 1: comedy mystery by George M. Khan, Seven Keys to ball Pate,
- 0:42Speaker 1: adapted from the novel by Earl der Vickers. You'll hear
- 0:46Speaker 1: also as special guest the world renowned violinist e f
- 0:49Speaker 1: from Zymbolist conducting. Our orchestra is Lois Silver's. Tonight's play
- 0:53Speaker 1: is brought to you by the makers of Luck Stays.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Before I introduce our producer, let me remind you that
- 0:59Speaker 1: if it's thrifty to buy several big boxes of Lux
- 1:02Speaker 1: Blakes at a time so you'll always have it handy
- 1:04Speaker 1: in bathroom and kitchen, every box of lux Lakes means
- 1:08Speaker 1: longer life for your washable nice things, kind care for
- 1:11Speaker 1: your hands. You're thrifty every time you use these gentler
- 1:15Speaker 1: finer flakes, and now our produce it. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:20Speaker 1: Mister Cecil B de Mill, greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Before we raise our curtain, we wish to advise our
- 1:35Speaker 1: listeners that if any important news bulletins on the European
- 1:38Speaker 1: situation are received at the Columbia Broadcasting System headquarters, they'll
- 1:42Speaker 1: be given you at the intermission during our program. Now
- 1:45Speaker 1: do our play and personalities. When George Jim Cohen adapted
- 1:49Speaker 1: Seven Keys to ball Fate for the stage, he had
- 1:51Speaker 1: no intention of starring in it, but just before the opening,
- 1:54Speaker 1: he and the leading man met with an accident. The
- 1:56Speaker 1: leading man was too seriously injured to go on, so
- 2:00Speaker 1: Cohen broken collar bone and all stepped into the breach.
- 2:03Speaker 1: When I related these facts to Mary Livingstone, she threw
- 2:06Speaker 1: back her head bravely and declared that if mister Cohen
- 2:09Speaker 1: could carry on with such a handicap, she could carry
- 2:12Speaker 1: on with Jack Benny, Mister Livingston. Mister Benny is not, however,
- 2:19Speaker 1: without some talent. He often entertains the guests at his
- 2:23Speaker 1: home with his debonair violin playing and with his sayings.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He's quite a familiar figure on the streets of Beverly Hills,
- 2:30Speaker 1: whizzing past the admiring spectators in his flashy Maxwell Town card,
- 2:36Speaker 1: and I almost forgot. Mary always brings Jack to her
- 2:39Speaker 1: radio program, and when she goes back on the air
- 2:42Speaker 1: next Sunday, she'll once again try and have a place
- 2:44Speaker 1: for him for the night. We've made a special treatment
- 2:49Speaker 1: of Seven Keys to ball Pate, which finds mister Benny
- 2:52Speaker 1: tackling one of the most difficult roles in his career.
- 2:54Speaker 1: The role of Jack Benny and Miss Livingstone comes to
- 2:58Speaker 1: you in her own interpretation of Mary Livingston. There's another
- 3:02Speaker 1: character in our adaptation called Cecil B. De Mill. Fourteen
- 3:06Speaker 1: hundred actors in Hollywood have refused my generous bribes to
- 3:10Speaker 1: play the part, so there's nothing left for me to
- 3:12Speaker 1: do but to play myself. This being the case, my
- 3:16Speaker 1: customary duties for the evening will be assumed in part
- 3:19Speaker 1: by the highly capable Melville Rowick. And now we light
- 3:22Speaker 1: the stage. It's curtain time and star time as de
- 3:25Speaker 1: Lux Radio Theater presents Jack Benny and Mary Livingston in
- 3:29Speaker 1: Seven Keys to ball Pate with Cecil B. De Mill.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Mister Rewick, will you set our scene on the lot
- 3:51Speaker 1: of paramount studios in Hollywood. A building stands apart from
- 3:54Speaker 1: the rest on its door the legend Cecil B. De
- 3:56Speaker 1: Mill Productions Incorporated. The door has just opened. Then be
- 4:00Speaker 1: himself rides quickly across the reception room toward his private office.
- 4:03Speaker 1: A small army of assistants and secretaries Hindery's progress with
- 4:07Speaker 1: innumerable requests. Good morning, mister de Mill, Good morning, morning Mill.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I had that later, will you Joe, we'll cyb here's
- 4:15Speaker 1: that script. Thanks, I'll read it tonight.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Would you see mister Nils.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I can't see anyone this morning. Ask him to come back.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Do not now?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Harry, sorry or Bill? Come into my office, will you? Okay,
- 4:24Speaker 1: mister Miller, all right, all right, I'll take care of everything.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Sit down, Belle. Morning miss call.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Good morning, mister de Mill.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Anything happened?
- 4:34Speaker 4: Nothing much? Mister Henry called about that script. Frank Donnelly
- 4:38Speaker 4: has a new star for you. And oh yes, mister
- 4:41Speaker 4: Benny called again. Who mister Benny, Jack Benny?
- 4:45Speaker 1: What did he want?
- 4:46Speaker 4: The usual thing?
- 4:47Speaker 5: What did you tell him the usual thing?
- 4:49Speaker 4: I said you were out to lunch.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'm beginning to feel a little guilty about Jack.
- 4:53Speaker 5: What's it all?
- 4:54Speaker 1: About seb Well, I was a little tired one night
- 4:57Speaker 1: and I I have promised i'd make a picture of them. No,
- 5:01Speaker 1: he is, and he calls me up every once in
- 5:04Speaker 1: a while to remind me of it.
- 5:05Speaker 5: He isn't serious, is he?
- 5:06Speaker 1: And that's just the trouble. He gave me a long
- 5:09Speaker 1: talk about how his soul is starved in comedy. He
- 5:12Speaker 1: wants to branch out into drama heavy acting part.
- 5:15Speaker 5: He must be crazy. What'd you tell him?
- 5:16Speaker 1: Well, I couldn't tell him the truth. It would have
- 5:18Speaker 1: broken his heart not to mention paramount. So I just
- 5:23Speaker 1: keep telling him. I'm still looking for the right story,
- 5:26Speaker 1: but it's becoming very embarrassing.
- 5:27Speaker 4: He seemed pretty discouraged this morning. Mister Demil, I really
- 5:31Speaker 4: think you ought to call him. He said you could
- 5:33Speaker 4: reach him at Mary Livingstone's house.
- 5:35Speaker 1: No, I'm not looking for trouble. But if he calls again,
- 5:38Speaker 1: I suppose I'll have to speak to him.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Oh Jack, Jack, Jack, Hey, Yosha, Yes, Mary Jack. Why
- 6:07Speaker 3: don't you give that cigar box of rest you've been
- 6:09Speaker 3: scratching on it for the last two hours.
- 6:11Speaker 5: The first place, it's not a cigar box. In the
- 6:13Speaker 5: second place, I wasn't scratching. That was music, whether you
- 6:16Speaker 5: like it or not.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Thanks for the choice.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Oh, well, that's the way you feel, I'll put it away.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Oh, Jack, I didn't mean it like that. Gee, you
- 6:24Speaker 3: certainly are getting cranky lately. Come over here to say hello,
- 6:27Speaker 3: and every time I open my mouth he gets sore.
- 6:30Speaker 3: It's the matter with you anyway.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Oh, I don't know. I guess I'm in one of
- 6:34Speaker 5: those moods again. I'm sorry, Mary Gosh, why doesn't de
- 6:40Speaker 5: Mill call? Oh?
- 6:42Speaker 3: So that's it. I knew there was a reason for
- 6:44Speaker 3: that long jaw you're wearing.
- 6:46Speaker 5: I'm not wearing a long jaw. Yeah, I too, Well,
- 6:48Speaker 5: I saw it in Esquire. See I've called to Mill
- 6:54Speaker 5: about twenty times. I'll bet that secretary never gave him
- 6:56Speaker 5: the message.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Jack, I hate to be a wet rag, but did
- 6:59Speaker 3: you ever think that maybe mister Demill doesn't want to
- 7:01Speaker 3: speak to you.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Oh, don't be silly. What makes you say that?
- 7:04Speaker 3: Well, he certainly goes out to lunch at funny hours.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Well that doesn't prove anything. He told me himself he
- 7:09Speaker 5: wanted to make a picture with me, and he wasn't lying.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll bet he looked you're right square in the
- 7:14Speaker 3: chest when he said it.
- 7:15Speaker 5: Oh no, he didn't listen, Mary, Mister de Mill knows
- 7:19Speaker 5: how I feel about comedies. We're gonna make a serious picture,
- 7:22Speaker 5: something that will give me a real chance. The only
- 7:25Speaker 5: thing that's holding it up is the story, and we'll
- 7:27Speaker 5: have one off. I have to sit down and write
- 7:28Speaker 5: it myself. I'll write something I can sync my teeth
- 7:31Speaker 5: into with my idea. Is all I need is paper
- 7:34Speaker 5: and pencil and teeth. See you, You don't give me
- 7:39Speaker 5: credit for anything, do you?
- 7:40Speaker 3: Oh Jack, Why don't you come down to earth. You're
- 7:42Speaker 3: a comedian. You made your name in comedy and you
- 7:45Speaker 3: ought to stick to it. This other stuff isn't for you.
- 7:48Speaker 5: What do you mean it isn't? I'm an actor? Ain't
- 7:51Speaker 5: I aren't? I first lost and always I'm an actor.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Here I am laying around wasting my talents because nobody
- 7:59Speaker 5: will give me a chance. De Mill makes the plaines men,
- 8:01Speaker 5: and he uses Gary Cooper. Then he turns around and
- 8:04Speaker 5: makes the buccaneer and uses Frederick March. What they want
- 8:08Speaker 5: with me at Paramount? I don't know you.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I wouldn't even ask so, and I certainly wouldn't keep
- 8:14Speaker 3: pestering mister de Mill all the time.
- 8:15Speaker 5: I'm not pestering him. Is just as anxious to do
- 8:18Speaker 5: this as I am. I'll give him a ring right now. Hello,
- 8:22Speaker 5: give me Hollywood. Oh six seven four six please, it's
- 8:26Speaker 5: probably out, but I'll take a chance. Hello mister de
- 8:30Speaker 5: Mill's office. Well, this is Jack Benny speaking. Is mister
- 8:34Speaker 5: de Mill back from lunch? Yet? Oh? He is? Well?
- 8:38Speaker 5: Can I speak to him? Thank you? There you are Mary? Yeah,
- 8:42Speaker 5: I told you was just as anxious. Hello, Well, how
- 8:45Speaker 5: are you, mister de Miller? This is Jack Benny. Oh
- 8:48Speaker 5: I'm pretty good. Say listen, I just called Mary. Oh
- 8:52Speaker 5: she's fine, she's fine, say mister de Mill. I've been
- 8:55Speaker 5: thinking about that story.
- 8:57Speaker 1: What's that?
- 8:59Speaker 5: Why? No, No, I haven't got a cold. Well maybe
- 9:03Speaker 5: just a little cold. Look, mister de Mill, I've been
- 9:06Speaker 5: thinking about that story. Huh huh h hot lemonade? Uh yes, yes,
- 9:11Speaker 5: I'll do that, say mister de Mill. I've been thinking
- 9:14Speaker 5: of quinine. Well I don't think it's that bad. Oh
- 9:19Speaker 5: is that so? Uh huh uh huh No, no sneezing,
- 9:26Speaker 5: uh uh huh?
- 9:28Speaker 3: Ask him what's good for falling hair?
- 9:30Speaker 5: Quiet? Uh huh? Well, thanks, mister de mill But look
- 9:35Speaker 5: what I called you up about. Oh it did? They
- 9:37Speaker 5: fixed your right up? Uh? Well, thanks very much, mister
- 9:40Speaker 5: de mill Yeah, goodbye. No wait, wait what I wanted? Hello? Hello?
- 9:46Speaker 5: You imagine that we were cut off?
- 9:56Speaker 6: Good morning, cecil be de Milk Productions. I'm sorry, mister
- 9:58Speaker 6: de Millton conference. Mister Mill is in conference.
- 10:03Speaker 1: I'm still not satisfied. Before I start casting a picture,
- 10:06Speaker 1: I want to know that the story is right, and
- 10:08Speaker 1: this story suddenly isn't. It's a perfect part for Gary Cooper,
- 10:10Speaker 1: mister de mill The character is all right, yes, but
- 10:12Speaker 1: he doesn't do anything. What is it, miss Cole.
- 10:15Speaker 4: I hate to disturb you, but Jack Benny is here.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Jack Benny, didn't you tell him I was in a
- 10:20Speaker 1: story conference, Yes, sir, but.
- 10:22Speaker 4: It didn't do much good. He thinks it's about a
- 10:24Speaker 4: story for him.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I was afraid of that. Well send him in.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Yes, sir, come mister Benny.
- 10:30Speaker 5: Oh thanks, thanks, But hello CEV, how are you no?
- 10:33Speaker 1: I pull through? Sit down? Jack?
- 10:35Speaker 5: Thanks? You know Mary, don't you?
- 10:36Speaker 1: Of course I do. Glad to see you. Mary.
- 10:38Speaker 3: I just want you to know, mister demil that I'm
- 10:40Speaker 3: not here my own free will. He dragged me.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Oh stop it, Mary Yullo. Cev Erry thinks I'm making
- 10:47Speaker 5: a pest out of myself. You better tell her.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I don't think that's necessary.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Oh well, how's it going? Cv ms Cole told me
- 10:55Speaker 5: you were having a story conference. That sounds like pretty
- 10:58Speaker 5: good news, and.
- 10:59Speaker 1: It might be we had a story to confer about
- 11:01Speaker 1: nothing doing it Jack?
- 11:03Speaker 5: Oh oh, I see, Well that's too bad.
- 11:08Speaker 1: You know, Jack, I've been thinking here, you and I
- 11:11Speaker 1: have been stalling around, wasting all your time, and we're
- 11:15Speaker 1: not getting any place. Maybe you ought to try some
- 11:17Speaker 1: other producer.
- 11:19Speaker 5: What you mean, walk out on you. I'm not built
- 11:24Speaker 5: that way, mister de Mill. I'm not a quitter. I'm
- 11:27Speaker 5: the kind of an actor who sticks. What I said sticks.
- 11:37Speaker 5: I'll look, mister de Mill, I don't care what happens.
- 11:39Speaker 5: I'm with you right to the end.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Well that's that's very kind of you, Jack.
- 11:43Speaker 5: I'm not gonna let a little thing like a story
- 11:45Speaker 5: lick us not if I have to write one myself.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Just like that. Huh.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Well, sure I can do it all right, after all,
- 11:52Speaker 5: I've had some experience, you know.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Well, it'll take you quite a while. Say, maybe it's
- 11:58Speaker 1: not such a bad idea at that, of course it
- 12:00Speaker 1: is no no. Now you run along and write that story, Jack,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and I'll give you plenty of time to do it. Okay, Well,
- 12:07Speaker 1: I'm going out to lunch. I'll see you in a
- 12:09Speaker 1: couple of months.
- 12:09Speaker 3: What are you gonna eat a whale?
- 12:11Speaker 5: Mary? Now look look CB, I'll look at her. I
- 12:15Speaker 5: don't need a couple of months to write a story.
- 12:17Speaker 5: When I get started out and I'll probably knock it
- 12:19Speaker 5: out in a couple of days, one day, if I'm
- 12:21Speaker 5: in the mood, Well, what's the matter. You don't believe
- 12:24Speaker 5: I could do it?
- 12:24Speaker 1: Eh, a complete scenario in twenty four hours. I don't
- 12:27Speaker 1: believe anyone could do it?
- 12:28Speaker 5: Oh you don't, all right, mister de mill I'll tell
- 12:30Speaker 5: you what I'll do. I'll start a story tonight. If
- 12:33Speaker 5: I finish it in twenty four hours, will you produce it?
- 12:35Speaker 1: No, it'd have to be good.
- 12:36Speaker 5: I'll take care of that. Will you produce it?
- 12:39Speaker 1: If it's a good story, why not? I'll tell you
- 12:41Speaker 1: something else. If you can write a complete and original
- 12:44Speaker 1: story in twenty four hours, I'll let you play the
- 12:47Speaker 1: lead in it.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Mary. You heard that. You heard what he said?
- 12:50Speaker 3: You're letting yourself in for it, mister Demil, I don't
- 12:53Speaker 3: think so.
- 12:53Speaker 1: It's a mental and physical impossibility.
- 12:55Speaker 7: That's Jack, all right, you'll find out cb ha ha,
- 13:03Speaker 7: so will you, JB.
- 13:04Speaker 5: All I need is a quiet place to work, and
- 13:06Speaker 5: I may have to go out of town.
- 13:07Speaker 1: That's all right with me. Any place you.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Want, Okay.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Now, let's see, as a matter of fact, Jack, if
- 13:14Speaker 1: you really want a quiet place, you could use my
- 13:17Speaker 1: place up on ball Paint where ball Paint Mountain. It's
- 13:21Speaker 1: an old house I picked up a couple of years ago,
- 13:23Speaker 1: but I've never lived there. And no one can bother
- 13:25Speaker 1: you because no one else can get in. There's only
- 13:28Speaker 1: one key in existence, and I'll give that to you.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Only one key. Eh. That sounds great?
- 13:34Speaker 1: Here it is, Yeah, that's the only key to ball Pate.
- 13:37Speaker 5: I'll say, where is this place? I mean, how do
- 13:40Speaker 5: I get there?
- 13:40Speaker 1: Well, it's it's on top of ball Paint Mountain, about
- 13:43Speaker 1: seventeen miles from the village of ball Paint. You'll probably
- 13:46Speaker 1: have to cut your way through the snow drifts. But
- 13:48Speaker 1: once you get there, you'll love it. The only thing
- 13:50Speaker 1: you'll hear is a couple of hoot owls, the moaning
- 13:52Speaker 1: of the wind. What no radio, No one ever goes
- 13:56Speaker 1: near there. It's an ideal place to work.
- 13:58Speaker 5: All right, the bets on. I'll go pack now and
- 14:00Speaker 5: i'll eat for ball Peyton. An hour good.
- 14:02Speaker 1: But remember Jack, a complete and original scenario scenario in
- 14:06Speaker 1: twenty four hours.
- 14:07Speaker 5: Listen, listen to Mill. If I don't bring you back
- 14:09Speaker 5: a complete and original story in twenty four hours, My
- 14:12Speaker 5: name ain't Jack.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Benny, confidentially, mister de Mill, it ain't.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Oh, oh, listen did mister Benny?
- 14:26Speaker 1: Here's this ball Pete? You got that key right here?
- 14:31Speaker 5: Say? It's kind of dark up this way, isn't it? There?
- 14:34Speaker 1: Sure is? Blending me?
- 14:35Speaker 8: Is the caretakers in this place? If we don't get
- 14:38Speaker 8: over mourn two or three times a year?
- 14:39Speaker 3: If you asked me, that's yours three times too much?
- 14:42Speaker 8: Are you hastepling a heia going in, mister Benny, I'll
- 14:46Speaker 8: make a late war. Ought to be an old oil
- 14:48Speaker 8: lamp around here somewhere.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Well, hurry, Jed, it's black as pitch. See, mister Benny.
- 14:54Speaker 4: You ain't really sit on the staying here.
- 14:56Speaker 9: All night, are you?
- 14:57Speaker 5: Hi? Certainly am missus Waller, But you don't I have
- 15:00Speaker 5: to stay do you well in a way, why not?
- 15:04Speaker 3: Why not?
- 15:05Speaker 5: Jaed?
- 15:07Speaker 9: Yes, why not?
- 15:08Speaker 5: I'll tell you why not?
- 15:09Speaker 8: Mister Benn in the heship, don't need to go worrying
- 15:12Speaker 8: him with all those tails. Why it's twenty years of
- 15:15Speaker 8: more since, oh man Chromat passed away. I never did
- 15:20Speaker 8: believe in ghosts in away.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Say, who was this old Kromat? He owned this place?
- 15:26Speaker 8: May Heaven help him, but he's dead, not dead and gone,
- 15:29Speaker 8: and he's graved these twenty years in his grave when
- 15:32Speaker 8: he ain't out of his in thehap.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Oh, it's all right, mister Waller. I'm I'm not very
- 15:39Speaker 5: much afraid of ghosts, of course, sheed.
- 15:40Speaker 10: Of course.
- 15:42Speaker 8: I never would to believe the word of it myself,
- 15:45Speaker 8: except for what happened to the last fella that stayed here.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Would you like to hear about it?
- 15:50Speaker 8: Well, not particularly well, twiss A night just like this
- 15:55Speaker 8: black is a cruise feather with the wind a howl
- 15:58Speaker 8: and the moving.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Through the tree just like now.
- 16:03Speaker 8: Yes, I guess that's worry.
- 16:04Speaker 5: No one never heard his screams you see here here?
- 16:06Speaker 5: Stop it, stop it. I don't want to hear any
- 16:09Speaker 5: more about it. I got a story to write here
- 16:12Speaker 5: and by heaven, I'll write or my name ain't. Now
- 16:15Speaker 5: get out of here. Both of you go on scat
- 16:17Speaker 5: and then you yes, I'm set on staying.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Huh, come on, then, Jed, we can go.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Our conscience is clear.
- 16:28Speaker 8: Goodbye, mister, goodbye, well goodbye.
- 16:34Speaker 5: Hmm. Let's see. The scene is in the library at night.
- 16:49Speaker 5: The girl walks in suddenly discovers, Yeah, that's it with me?
- 16:58Speaker 5: Who's that? Who's out there? Who's outside that door? Why
- 17:05Speaker 5: are you Morgan?
- 17:06Speaker 1: She's talking here?
- 17:09Speaker 5: Who are you?
- 17:09Speaker 8: It's okay, Morgan, I'm Cookie Bland.

- 21:33Speaker 5: I came to the back door. There is no back door.
- 21:36Speaker 3: I made one.
- 21:42Speaker 5: It wasn't that funny.

- 25:12Speaker 5: It's not crumpet, it's crummet.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Well she certainly looks it.
- 25:15Speaker 5: Mary. Look, this is silly. It's her money and she
- 25:17Speaker 5: came here to get it. Now there's a man named
- 25:19Speaker 5: Morgan who's trying to take it away from her, and
- 25:20Speaker 5: there's a fellow named Kokie Bland who's hiding in the
- 25:22Speaker 5: other room, and he's trying to get it. Hey, I
- 25:25Speaker 5: wait a minute, Bland, wait a second. I didn't mean
- 25:27Speaker 5: to tell her, Really I didn't. It just slipped up.
- 25:29Speaker 5: Come on all you no, look what you've done. Mary.

- 27:06Speaker 9: Be my stockings last lots longer than yours. On account
- 27:10Speaker 9: of this elasticity you're always talking about. I suppose stockings

- 27:15Speaker 1: I wish this budget would.
- 27:17Speaker 9: Honestly, Betty, it's dope. Be the war stockings the way
- 27:20Speaker 9: you do. Come on, be a good egg, use lucks

- 27:24Speaker 1: Is somebody in this family actually going to do something.

- 37:55Speaker 5: Is my gun in it? Yes? And two waces, let's go.
- 38:09Speaker 1: ITAU was for station identification. This is the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 38:35Speaker 1: This is the Lux Radio Theater. Ladies and gentlemen, brought
- 38:37Speaker 1: to you with the good wishes of the makers of
- 38:39Speaker 1: Lux Plays. And now before bringing you the third act
- 38:41Speaker 1: of our play starring Jack Benny, Mary Livingston and Cecil B.
- 38:44Speaker 1: De Mille, we have a little intimission. During the week,
- 38:47Speaker 1: one of the most distinguished violinists in the world, mister
- 38:50Speaker 1: Ephraim Zimbalist, bordered a plane and headed west just to
- 38:53Speaker 1: be with us tonight, a tribute for which we're most grateful.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Due to the insidious machinations of Jack Benny, all violinists
- 39:00Speaker 1: have fallen into a mild sort of disrepute, and especially
- 39:04Speaker 1: a certain composition for the violin written by Schubert, a
- 39:07Speaker 1: composition spelt b as in Benny e e like a
- 39:12Speaker 1: knight of old aglow with a fierce flame of vengeance.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Mister Zimbolist is here to right ancient wrongs and to
- 39:18Speaker 1: play the bee with some regard for mister Schubert and
- 39:20Speaker 1: the sensibilities of listening America. At last, mister Benny is cornered,
- 39:25Speaker 1: mister Zimblist. Are you ready?
- 39:26Speaker 14: Thank you, mister week. But there's no hurry. Let him
- 39:29Speaker 14: suffer for a while longer? Well why not? Oh, by
- 39:32Speaker 14: the way, mister Zimbleist, what do you think of Jack
- 39:34Speaker 14: as an actor? I find a remarkable similarity, mister Ruick,
- 39:38Speaker 14: between mister Benyard the actor and mister Benyard the violinist.
- 39:44Speaker 14: Even as an actor he insists on playing in seven keys.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Mister Zimbleist, I shucks, I played the violin too. Maybe
- 39:52Speaker 1: you hurt me in the buccaneer. I was the pirate
- 39:54Speaker 1: who played the violin for Frederick Mars to soothe his nerves.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Or is that so?
- 39:59Speaker 14: May suggests me through that next time you give him
- 40:01Speaker 14: a nice cup of hot milk.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Oh, don't you like anything around here, mister Zimblist. Oh,
- 40:06Speaker 1: of course, I'm just trying to be funnily through it.
- 40:10Speaker 14: When a balinist tries to be a Conedian, or when
- 40:12Speaker 14: a Canadian tries to be as Heaven help the audience.
- 40:17Speaker 1: I think I better play the b Fine, ladies and gentlemen,
- 40:21Speaker 1: misterram Zimblest, accompanied at the piano by a Theodore or
- 40:24Speaker 1: Seigberd America. Thanks here, mister sembleist, and we all trust
- 41:27Speaker 1: mister Benny's musical dumplings are at long last properly lumped.
- 41:31Speaker 1: We hear him now with Mary Livingston and Cecil B.
- 41:33Speaker 1: De Mille in Act three of seven Keys to Balltap.
- 41:42Speaker 1: An hour later, Jack Benny has enlisted the aid of
- 41:44Speaker 1: the Balltape Village Police. A car continuing our hero and
- 41:47Speaker 1: the Chief Constable, pulls up the rugged mountain road comes
- 41:50Speaker 1: to a stop just outside of the old house.
- 41:56Speaker 5: There's a house seat, Kennedy, All right, all right now,
- 41:59Speaker 5: don't get excited. Went around the whole bunch of money.
- 42:02Speaker 5: Come on, wait, gosh, I forgot we can't get in.
- 42:05Speaker 5: I came out without the key. Don't worry about that.
- 42:08Speaker 5: I got one. Oh you have. Well, don't lose it.
- 42:11Speaker 5: They're awfully scarce. Hey, look, huh, what's the matter?
- 42:15Speaker 1: Now?
- 42:16Speaker 5: See I left the light burning in that room? Now
- 42:18Speaker 5: it's star all right, all right, take it easy.
- 42:20Speaker 1: I've got a flashlight.
- 42:21Speaker 5: We'll break in on them and take them by surprise. Ready,
- 42:24Speaker 5: right now, everybody, wait a minute. There's nobody here. They
- 42:32Speaker 5: married married, Why they've all gone? They can't be gone.
- 42:36Speaker 5: We just seen them coming down the mountain. Say, I
- 42:39Speaker 5: thought there was something screwy about you, but I'm not screwy.
- 42:42Speaker 5: They must be somewhere in the house. You look upstairs,
- 42:44Speaker 5: and i'll take the cellar. Okay, here, take this other
- 42:46Speaker 5: gun out of my hip pocket, and if you see anybody,
- 42:49Speaker 5: show it fir gee. I hope nothing happened to marry Mary.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Mary? Are you in the cellar?
- 43:00Speaker 5: Mary? If they're down here, turn on the light. I
- 43:01Speaker 5: can't see a thing, Mary, Mary.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Hello, Jack?
- 43:06Speaker 5: Oh Mary, you're safe. Where are you? I can't see I'm.
- 43:10Speaker 3: Over here, Jack sitting in a rocking chair.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Oh, I thought something happened to you. We'll get out
- 43:14Speaker 5: of that chair and come over here.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Okay, but you'll have to untie these ropes first.
- 43:17Speaker 5: What ropes? You mean you're tied of that chair.
- 43:20Speaker 3: I couldn't help, but Jack, really I couldn't.
- 43:22Speaker 5: I might have known this would happened. Let me have
- 43:24Speaker 5: those ropes.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Who did this, mister Morgan?
- 43:26Speaker 5: Oh Morgan?
- 43:27Speaker 3: Eh, yeah, right after I dropped the gun.
- 43:29Speaker 5: Oh you dropped the gun.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Well, I couldn't help, but I was standing there covering him,
- 43:33Speaker 3: just like you told me. And all of a sudden,
- 43:35Speaker 3: Morgan yelled, look out behind you, And when I turned
- 43:40Speaker 3: around there was nobody there.
- 43:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess that trick is better than I thought
- 43:44Speaker 3: it was.
- 43:45Speaker 5: Oh, shut up, Hey, listen, they're all upstairs again. Come on,
- 43:49Speaker 5: slip out of those ropes. I'm ready up the stairs.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Quick, Jack, Maybe you better not go up there.
- 43:54Speaker 5: What are you talking about? I brought the law back
- 43:55Speaker 5: with me. Kennedy's taking charge. You'll have those crooks and

- 47:38Speaker 5: Are now a director? You told me there was only
- 47:41Speaker 5: one key. This place has more keys than a grand piano. Jack,
- 47:44Speaker 5: you and I lose twenty four hours. I couldn't write
- 47:47Speaker 5: a story in this joint in twenty four years. What's
- 47:54Speaker 5: the matter with you? What are you all laughing at?
- 47:57Speaker 1: Hey?
- 47:57Speaker 5: What goes on here? Anyway?
- 47:59Speaker 1: I just want to tell you, Jack, I hope you're
- 48:02Speaker 1: not going to be mad. But the whole thing was
- 48:04Speaker 1: a joke.
- 48:05Speaker 5: What was a joke?
- 48:06Speaker 1: I sent all these people up here just for a gig.
- 48:09Speaker 5: Gig?
- 48:10Speaker 1: That's right. This girl you thought was Rita Krummitt, her
- 48:12Speaker 1: real name is Eve Forsythe I used her in my
- 48:14Speaker 1: last picture.
- 48:15Speaker 5: How do you do, mister Benny? Well, this is the
- 48:18Speaker 5: darnest thing.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Kokie Bland isn't the krook. He isn't even Kokie. He's
- 48:22Speaker 1: my old prop man.
- 48:23Speaker 5: How are you, mister Bennie, this is very funny.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Morgan. Here is an actor I've been using for years.
- 48:29Speaker 1: His name is Jones.
- 48:31Speaker 5: Jes what a odd name.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Kennedy isn't the real chief Constable. But he's a real actor.
- 48:36Speaker 5: Well thanks, mister de mill say he's a real actor.
- 48:40Speaker 5: He's certainly had me going. Well, this is quite a surprise.
- 48:43Speaker 1: And of course Mary was in on the whole thing
- 48:45Speaker 1: from the start.
- 48:46Speaker 5: Oh she was, Hello Jack Mary, Gosh, darn you. Oh
- 48:52Speaker 5: this is very funny, say mister Deville. Who was the hermit?
- 48:55Speaker 1: Huh?
- 48:56Speaker 5: You know the hermit, the guy you sent up here
- 48:58Speaker 5: to act like a crazy man. Oh, he had me
- 49:00Speaker 5: scared for a while. Who was he?
- 49:02Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 49:04Speaker 5: You know, the crazy guy? The guy said he was
- 49:06Speaker 5: going to shoot me at twelve o'clock sharp.
- 49:08Speaker 1: You know anything about this Kennedy?
- 49:09Speaker 5: Not me. I figured he was one of the actors.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Well I didn't send him.
- 49:13Speaker 5: What you mean you you mean you?
- 49:16Speaker 1: You mean you There must be some mistake. I don't
- 49:18Speaker 1: know anything about a hermit one another do.
- 49:20Speaker 5: I I thought that, Wait a minute, you mean this
- 49:22Speaker 5: hermit is on the level, and he must be. But
- 49:24Speaker 5: he's gonna shoot me. He's going to kill me at
- 49:25Speaker 5: twelve o'clock.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Now, keep calm, Jack. There must be something we can do.
- 49:28Speaker 5: But he's a maniac. He's crazy. He's roaming a round loose. Listen,
- 49:31Speaker 5: what time is it? What time is it now?
- 49:33Speaker 1: It's exactly two minutes of twelve, two minutes.
- 49:35Speaker 3: Of Jack, Jack, Jack, look at me? Are you all right?
- 49:46Speaker 5: He got me Mary? He got me Mary? Yes? Jack,
- 49:52Speaker 5: Tell dm Ill, yes, yes. Tell Jim Ill what Jack?
- 49:56Speaker 3: Tell them Ill?
- 49:57Speaker 5: What? Tell Demill his watch is two minutes slow?
- 50:01Speaker 6: Why mister de Mill's office, I'm sorry, mister de mill
- 50:11Speaker 6: is in conference. I'm sorry, mister demill is in a
- 50:13Speaker 6: story conference with mister Benny.
- 50:15Speaker 5: Mister de mill Is in a story conference. There's your story,
- 50:19Speaker 5: mister de Mill. After finish, the hermit shoots me and
- 50:21Speaker 5: I fall to the floor. Mary leans over me and says, Jack,
- 50:24Speaker 5: look at me, are you all right? And I look
- 50:26Speaker 5: up at her and say, tell de Mill. Tell de
- 50:30Speaker 5: Mill his watch is two minutes slow. Finish. There's your story,
- 50:34Speaker 5: mister de Mill, and I finished it in twenty four hours.
- 50:36Speaker 3: See Jack, that's swell.
- 50:38Speaker 5: What do you think of it? CV?
- 50:39Speaker 1: Did you write all this? Since you were in this
- 50:41Speaker 1: office yesterday.
- 50:41Speaker 5: I certainly did.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Did you work at my place on ball Pace?
- 50:44Speaker 5: Yes? And you were right. I never heard a sound,
- 50:46Speaker 5: but I used it for the locale of my story
- 50:48Speaker 5: and brought in a lot of crooks and things. Well,
- 50:50Speaker 5: I even put you in it. I had you come
- 50:52Speaker 5: in at the finish to tell me it was all
- 50:53Speaker 5: a gay man, I know, And I wrote apart from
- 50:55Speaker 5: Mary too, well, how do you like it?
- 50:57Speaker 1: It's very good? Jack?
- 50:58Speaker 5: Thanks. Now you remember you promise TV you said you'd
- 51:01Speaker 5: produce it.
- 51:01Speaker 1: I certainly will.
- 51:02Speaker 5: There you are Mary, you see gee?
- 51:04Speaker 1: And Gary Cooper is just the man for it.
- 51:07Speaker 5: Gary Cooper.
- 51:09Speaker 1: Now wait a minute, mister de mille. You said I
- 51:11Speaker 1: could play the lead, and I said you could play
- 51:13Speaker 1: the lead if it was an original story.
- 51:15Speaker 5: Well it is original and it's good too.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Yeah. But it was also good in nineteen ten when
- 51:20Speaker 1: Old Beggers wrote the novel Oh he did, And in
- 51:23Speaker 1: nineteen thirteen when George M. Cohen produced the play.
- 51:26Speaker 5: Oh What a Coincident?
- 51:28Speaker 1: And in nineteen twenty five when Paramount produced the silent.
- 51:31Speaker 5: Picture, Oh they got in it?
- 51:32Speaker 1: Yeah, And in nineteen twenty nine when RKO made it
- 51:35Speaker 1: as a talkie. Well, yeah, and I believe they all
- 51:38Speaker 1: called it Seven Keys to Baldpate.
- 51:41Speaker 5: They did, she and I was so proud of it. God,
- 51:45Speaker 5: I thought it was my own brainchild, didn't you?
- 51:47Speaker 3: And it turned out to be an orphan.
- 51:48Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I guess I'm lick. So the pictures off,
- 51:53Speaker 5: acb I'm sorry, Jack, Gee, and I wanted to play
- 51:56Speaker 5: the lead in it. Well that's the way it goes. Yeah,
- 52:00Speaker 5: come on, Murray, let's go home.
- 52:01Speaker 3: Wait a minute, Jack, you've still got a chance. Grab
- 52:04Speaker 3: that script. What for we take it over to Walt Disney.
- 52:06Speaker 3: He'll produce it.
- 52:07Speaker 5: Gee, Walt Disney, say there's an idea. Come on, let's
- 52:10Speaker 5: go Walt Disney. Long Jack, whack whack, whack, whack, whack whack.
- 52:38Speaker 1: And that's the end of our Lux Radio Theater version
- 52:40Speaker 1: of Seven Keys to bald Pate, But not the end
- 52:42Speaker 1: of Jack Benny. You'd be back in a moment with
- 52:44Speaker 1: Mary Livingston to be put on the spot again, I'm sure,
- 52:47Speaker 1: by mister DeMille. Meantime, may I ask you our listeners
- 52:50Speaker 1: a question. Have you ever been put on the spot
- 52:53Speaker 1: by embarrassingly read rough hands. If you have, if you
- 52:57Speaker 1: want the smooth white hands, everyone admires. Try changing to
- 53:01Speaker 1: lux flakes for washing your dishes. Your hands may spend
- 53:04Speaker 1: as much as five hundred hours in the dishpen every year.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Think of the damage a harsh soap may do. Such
- 53:10Speaker 1: soaps are drying. They rob your skin of its natural oils.
- 53:14Speaker 1: But lux flakes have none of the harmful alkali so
- 53:16Speaker 1: drying to the skin. They leave your hands lovely. Do
- 53:20Speaker 1: as so many clever women do nowadays, use lucks for dishes.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Buy the thrifty big box tomorrow. And now, mister de Mill,
- 53:29Speaker 1: the actor surrenders to mister de Mill, your host and producer,
- 53:32Speaker 1: as he brings Jack, Benny, and Mary Livingston back to
- 53:34Speaker 1: our microphone. Thank you for that word, actor, mister Rick.
- 53:38Speaker 1: And now a brief exchange of opinions with the man
- 53:40Speaker 1: of the hour. Oh Jack, mister Benny, Mary, where's Jack.
- 53:44Speaker 3: He's in the next room taking off his make up.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Make up for Mary? Does he use make up on radio?
- 53:49Speaker 5: Well?
- 53:49Speaker 3: Jack has to on a kind of mic.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Fright, Mike fright? What's that got to do with it?
- 53:53Speaker 3: When he doesn't put on makeup, he frightens the mic?
- 53:56Speaker 3: I see here he comes, now, Hey Jack, mister de
- 53:59Speaker 3: Mill oh yes, mister.
- 54:01Speaker 1: De Well, Jack, now that it's all over, I've got
- 54:04Speaker 1: to admit that tonight's acting was superb, really great.
- 54:07Speaker 5: Gee, mister de Mill, you mean that, and.
- 54:09Speaker 1: I certainly do.
- 54:09Speaker 5: It was brilliant well, and there's no room for an
- 54:12Speaker 5: argument there.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Thanks. I thought I was pretty good you of course,
- 54:17Speaker 1: who did you mean?
- 54:18Speaker 5: Oh? Well, yes, yes, mister de Mill, I thought your
- 54:20Speaker 5: acting was all right, yes, sir, all right?
- 54:23Speaker 1: You mean you didn't think it was good?
- 54:25Speaker 5: Well, I didn't think it was bad, but.
- 54:28Speaker 1: You didn't say it was good.
- 54:29Speaker 5: No, No, I said it was all right, all right, yeah, but.
- 54:32Speaker 1: You said it like major bows.
- 54:36Speaker 13: No.
- 54:36Speaker 5: I really thought you were swell and speaking of historyonic ability,
- 54:40Speaker 5: I wasn't exactly a sound effect on this program myself.
- 54:43Speaker 1: You know, I agree with you, Jack, I thought you
- 54:45Speaker 1: did a great job.
- 54:47Speaker 5: Thank you, Hey Gable, what what is it? Mary?
- 54:52Speaker 3: As long as a matter of personal opinion, I thought
- 54:55Speaker 3: I was pretty good too, Mary.
- 54:56Speaker 1: You were excellent. I don't know what we'd have done
- 54:58Speaker 1: without you. Right away, Jack, what did you think of
- 55:04Speaker 1: the way mister Zimbalist played the bee?
- 55:06Speaker 5: Oh? I thought it was quite good, mister de Mill.
- 55:08Speaker 5: Of course, his PITSI Cato was a bit strong, and
- 55:13Speaker 5: when it came to the andante, I thought he was
- 55:15Speaker 5: slightly ras mataz he was, Oh yeah, But when it
- 55:20Speaker 5: came to the allegro. Why nobody can question that.
- 55:22Speaker 3: They better not question you either, Yeah either enough to.
- 55:29Speaker 5: Now look, I always come then with her little tooth thin.
- 55:34Speaker 5: Now look, mister de Mill, Now that it's all over,
- 55:37Speaker 5: let's be serious. How about my playing the leading role
- 55:40Speaker 5: in your next picture. I've been looking forward to it,
- 55:42Speaker 5: and I know I can do it. Well, I've been
- 55:43Speaker 5: riding a horse eight hours a day just to get
- 55:45Speaker 5: in shape for the part.
- 55:46Speaker 1: You've been practicing on the wrong kind of a horse, Jack,
- 55:49Speaker 1: Union Pacific is the story of an iron horse.
- 55:51Speaker 5: I think I rode wasn't made of feathers, mister de Mill.
- 55:55Speaker 1: But Jack, you've got it all wrong. An iron horse
- 55:57Speaker 1: is a locomotive. Union Pacific is a sorry.
- 56:00Speaker 5: Oh, a railroad story, mister de Mill. Ray roads are
- 56:03Speaker 5: right down my alley.
- 56:05Speaker 3: That was before you moved to the new house.
- 56:09Speaker 5: Well it means a part in the picture. I'll move
- 56:11Speaker 5: right back. How about it, mister de Mill.
- 56:13Speaker 3: You'll think it over.
- 56:14Speaker 5: You stay out of this. What do you say?
- 56:17Speaker 1: Mary's right? I'll think it over.
- 56:19Speaker 5: Okay, that's good enough for me.
- 56:20Speaker 1: By the way, I want to issh you good luck
- 56:23Speaker 1: on the opening of your new Jello series next Sunday night,
- 56:26Speaker 1: you too, Mary.
- 56:27Speaker 5: Thank you, mister Demil, thank you. Oh, mister de Mill,
- 56:29Speaker 5: I still think you're right about my trying to be
- 56:31Speaker 5: a dramatic actor. I'll wash my hands of the whole
- 56:33Speaker 5: thing and they show you there's no hard feelings. I'll
- 56:36Speaker 5: do it with lucks. Well, I guess we'll be running along.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Come on, Mary, okay, say jacked. And it seems strange
- 56:43Speaker 3: working tonight after our long vacation.
- 56:45Speaker 5: It sure did. But I got a lot of laughs tonight,
- 56:47Speaker 5: didn't I. Mary.
- 56:48Speaker 3: Yeah, tuck in your shirt tail. Let's go home.
