- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to Jack's Am.
- 0:17Speaker 2: It's June ninth, and here's a live look at Mandatory
- 0:20Speaker 2: Mini Camp. Everybody's here today is kick things off, a
- 0:24Speaker 2: three day mandatory mini camp for all the players and
- 0:27Speaker 2: coaches on hand as well. I'm Kennannie Stevens, Brian Sexton
- 0:30Speaker 2: and John Oser.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We're always here, but.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It's good to see the players are here as well,
- 0:34Speaker 2: and we're gonna go over our big things today. Uh.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Obviously the show brought to you by public. We're shopping
- 0:39Speaker 2: is a pleasure. Big thing number one is mini camp. Now, John,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you are the wise one of us, so please explain. Well,
- 0:44Speaker 2: there's a difference between OTA and Mini Camp.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Well, if shopping is a public is a pleasure at publics,
- 0:51Speaker 3: then being here at Mini Caamp is a pleasure for me. Sure,
- 0:53Speaker 3: it's uh, look, there's really no difference Brian, between OTA's
- 0:58Speaker 3: which are organized teammate tip In Mini camp it's all unpadded.
- 1:04Speaker 3: You can do eleven on eleven work and seven on
- 1:06Speaker 3: seven work. The difference is the mandatory part you have
- 1:09Speaker 3: to be at Mini camp if you're a player for
- 1:11Speaker 3: these three days, you don't have to be at the others. Realistically,
- 1:15Speaker 3: these days especially in Florida. Most guys are at the OTAs.
- 1:19Speaker 3: You might have an absence or two, but there's really
- 1:22Speaker 3: not that much difference. It's three practices out of the
- 1:26Speaker 3: what thirteen that they get in this format. I guess
- 1:30Speaker 3: the biggest difference is is fans. On Wednesday, it's open
- 1:34Speaker 3: to a portion of the fans.
- 1:35Speaker 4: It's a little longer, too, right, I mean during OTA's
- 1:37Speaker 4: I think they're on six hour clock that they could
- 1:39Speaker 4: be here, and I think it's pushed to nine. Could
- 1:42Speaker 4: be wrong with that, but it's a little bit longer.
- 1:44Speaker 4: It's a little more like a training camp day in
- 1:45Speaker 4: that sense that they have a structured schedule that goes
- 1:50Speaker 4: into the afternoon. But there's really not a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 4: difference in this. It is a good opportunity when you
- 1:56Speaker 4: have everyone here. Kai obviously to work to get everybody
- 1:59Speaker 4: on the same page. Although I think they've been really
- 2:01Speaker 4: happy with the participation rate of the OTAs, so this
- 2:07Speaker 4: is just just a different.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Week, just another day.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I think they've had almost one hundred percent participation as
- 2:12Speaker 2: it is. Anyway, we'll go to our second big thing,
- 2:14Speaker 2: which is what to watch. So Brian, we've been here
- 2:16Speaker 2: for the past couple of weeks watching them in OTAs.
- 2:19Speaker 2: But do you look at anything differently or is it
- 2:21Speaker 2: just like do you try to move around to different groups?
- 2:23Speaker 2: How do you analyze mini camp?
- 2:25Speaker 4: Well, listen, I get forward watching receivers catch the ball,
- 2:28Speaker 4: I mean, which is about the only dramatic thing that
- 2:30Speaker 4: happens on the mini camp field.
- 2:32Speaker 5: So you must be really bored.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Yeah, well, listen, I go around and I know you
- 2:37Speaker 4: can't judge the offensive line. People roll their eyes, But
- 2:39Speaker 4: I like to look at the combinations. Right, who's playing
- 2:42Speaker 4: left tackle today? How many young players are mixed in
- 2:45Speaker 4: with the first group, trying to get them some reps there.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I'm looking to see how the coaches are using players. Again,
- 2:52Speaker 4: it's a mini camp setting, but just looking for combinations
- 2:54Speaker 4: and trying to get a feel for what they might think. Again,
- 2:58Speaker 4: until we get the training camp, this is for them,
- 3:02Speaker 4: not for us, And from that perspective, it's just about
- 3:05Speaker 4: trying to figure things out and a mental exercise.
- 3:07Speaker 6: John.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's really the best way to put it.
- 3:09Speaker 3: It's every year on these shows I kind of joke
- 3:12Speaker 3: about the meaningless of OTA and the meaningless and neess
- 3:15Speaker 3: of OTAs. And when I say that, it's meaningless for us.
- 3:21Speaker 5: In terms of evaluation.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Realistically, it's not meaningless at all for the players and
- 3:26Speaker 3: the coaches who are out there because they're learning, they're
- 3:28Speaker 3: trying to get ready. Where it becomes meaningless is when
- 3:31Speaker 3: we as observers try to draw something, Oh, he's going
- 3:35Speaker 3: to start, because you really can't see that from this
- 3:38Speaker 3: What do you watch? I try to watch wide receivers
- 3:41Speaker 3: because that's what you can actually see. You watch for
- 3:44Speaker 3: the quarterback to really know what he's doing, which Trevor
- 3:46Speaker 3: looks like he does.
- 3:47Speaker 5: You look for speed, you look for quickness, etc.
- 3:50Speaker 3: And then you look through it all with a lens
- 3:52Speaker 3: of Okay, now I see this. Let's wait till the
- 3:55Speaker 3: pads come on to where you can come sort of
- 3:58Speaker 3: close to judging anything that's going on.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Or of a final big thing today, which is sneak
- 4:02Speaker 2: Peach because as mentioned John, they fans are gonna be
- 4:06Speaker 2: able to attend Mini camp tomorrow and I know we've
- 4:08Speaker 2: seen a lot of it, but there are some new
- 4:10Speaker 2: things for the fantasy in one of which is certainly
- 4:12Speaker 2: Brian Thomas Junior a little bit of a resurgence and
- 4:15Speaker 2: also just that chemistry building with Trevor Lawrence. So if
- 4:18Speaker 2: you're a fan coming tomorrow, what are they gonna see
- 4:20Speaker 2: on the field.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Well, I I think that's what people will look for.
- 4:22Speaker 3: It's uh rarely in OTA's or mini camps do you
- 4:27Speaker 3: get such an obvious story. And William Cohen and Trevor
- 4:31Speaker 3: Lawrence has has sort of helped that be a story
- 4:34Speaker 3: by acknowledging, Yeah, we're trying to get on the same
- 4:36Speaker 3: page with BTJ. Uh, that's a priority. Liam has said
- 4:40Speaker 3: he likes it. He likes the work that's being done.
- 4:42Speaker 5: So watch for that. Uh.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Btj's look very good. Parker Washington's look very good. The
- 4:46Speaker 3: receivers have a very good rapport with Trevor right now. Uh,
- 4:50Speaker 3: that's something to watch. And uh Baseell Tuton's fast.
- 4:53Speaker 6: Yeah, he's really fast.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Uh.
- 4:55Speaker 4: I think if I were coming out to sit in
- 4:56Speaker 4: the stands based on, you know, what I had seen
- 4:59Speaker 4: from this team since the end of last season, I'd
- 5:02Speaker 4: be looking to find out about these tight ends. You know,
- 5:04Speaker 4: you keep hearing about thirteen personnel and how the tight
- 5:07Speaker 4: end package in the league is growing. Across the league,
- 5:10Speaker 4: everyone's wanting to try to replicate what the Rams did.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Let me see Borcature and Kozie. Let me see the
- 5:15Speaker 4: two young tight ends. I listened to a podcast last
- 5:19Speaker 4: week all about the resurgence of the tight end and
- 5:21Speaker 4: where they're going, and so I'm gonna watch that because
- 5:23Speaker 4: I think it's pretty interesting. I also hear they really
- 5:26Speaker 4: like what they've seen from the young defensive tackle from
- 5:28Speaker 4: Texas A and m out of Rigs. So let's see
- 5:31Speaker 4: what he's got as well. Look at the young guys,
- 5:33Speaker 4: just get a feel for him.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Absolutely, we'll have those available today and we'll have a
- 5:37Speaker 2: live camera throughout practice as well. So stay with us
- 5:39Speaker 2: here on jag Zam. We're gonna do a little this
- 5:41Speaker 2: or that. After the break, go back into jag Zam.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Travis Hunter working off to the side there as he
- 5:58Speaker 2: continues his rehab cross after knee surgery last season. He's
- 6:03Speaker 2: about as involved as you could physically be without doing
- 6:05Speaker 2: the drills themselves. At this point, he's like runs up,
- 6:07Speaker 2: he's in the huddle, he gets to play, like sets up.
- 6:09Speaker 2: He just doesn't always run all every single drill. He's
- 6:12Speaker 2: still involved.
- 6:13Speaker 3: But for clarification, right now they're warming up, so yeah,
- 6:16Speaker 3: so they're not seeing that. But yeah, we've been to
- 6:19Speaker 3: what two practices each time. As Kay said, he's in
- 6:23Speaker 3: the huddle, he's got a play sheet, he breaks off
- 6:27Speaker 3: and he simulates as much as he can. You can't
- 6:31Speaker 3: say that he's not trying to be involved with this.
- 6:34Speaker 3: And all reports so far as they very pleased with
- 6:36Speaker 3: his approach.
- 6:37Speaker 4: And I you know, you heard him talk about the
- 6:39Speaker 4: weight room and how he spent so much time in
- 6:41Speaker 4: the weight room, and it's good to seek use. He's
- 6:43Speaker 4: not a huge guy, and in fact, his legs always
- 6:46Speaker 4: looked small to me and to hear him talk about
- 6:48Speaker 4: the time that he spent in.
- 6:49Speaker 6: The weight room. He's a great football player.
- 6:51Speaker 4: And now I think he's got a chance really to
- 6:52Speaker 4: hold up for entire season when he's got that kind
- 6:55Speaker 4: of strength added to him.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and we think we he's on track with everything
- 6:59Speaker 2: should available by train in camp, so you're ready for
- 7:01Speaker 2: the season. We're gonna do a little this or that
- 7:03Speaker 2: today as we kind of look ahead to training camp
- 7:05Speaker 2: what this team might look like going forward. So Travis
- 7:09Speaker 2: Hunt will be coming back, still will be involved in
- 7:11Speaker 2: the offense, but what's the pass catcher situation. Obviously Parker
- 7:15Speaker 2: Washington had a huge breakout last year, but Jacobi Myer's
- 7:17Speaker 2: coming in mid season, a very much trusted target of
- 7:21Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence right out of the gate.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Who do you think is going to be the top
- 7:24Speaker 1: pass catcher at the end of the season for the Jags?
- 7:26Speaker 1: Who or someone else could be another name to be named.
- 7:30Speaker 4: We've heard about Brian Thomas Junior's resurgence, and he's obviously
- 7:34Speaker 4: a very talented guy.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Let me put my money on Parker Washington.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Because there's been talk about getting a deal done with
- 7:41Speaker 4: him John and they obviously haven't agreed to terms right.
- 7:45Speaker 6: So Washington is in a sense betting on himself this season.
- 7:49Speaker 4: He needs to have a big season to get the
- 7:51Speaker 4: kind of money that he thinks he's worthy of, and
- 7:53Speaker 4: a lot of other people seem to think that he
- 7:54Speaker 4: is as well. He was your go to guy last
- 7:57Speaker 4: year down the stretch the game in Denver really that out.
- 8:01Speaker 4: So I'll go with Parker Washington because he's always surprised.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Every single time that you expect him to make a play,
- 8:09Speaker 4: he makes a big play.
- 8:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I think there's a situation.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I agree that Parker is wise to bet on himself,
- 8:16Speaker 3: and I think the Jaguars are wise to let a
- 8:18Speaker 3: bet on himself, because I don't know that you know
- 8:21Speaker 3: exactly his value based on Uber production at the end
- 8:24Speaker 3: of last year.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Is that gonna be consistent?
- 8:28Speaker 3: I think ideally the Jaguars people love the fact that
- 8:32Speaker 3: that question is there because I think they would love
- 8:34Speaker 3: for people not to know who the top pass catcher
- 8:36Speaker 3: is gonna be. I think their ideal would be each guy,
- 8:40Speaker 3: I don't know what the numbers would be, each guy
- 8:41Speaker 3: catching fifty three, you know, BTJ, Washington, Meyers, Strange with
- 8:47Speaker 3: Hunter catching you know, if they could get that sort
- 8:50Speaker 3: of balance, I think that's what it's gonna be.
- 8:52Speaker 5: Who's the top guy? You know?
- 8:55Speaker 3: I would love to say, give me four guys catching
- 8:57Speaker 3: fifty five with BTJ a huge ye pc.
- 9:02Speaker 5: That's the yards per catch that stat's guy over here.
- 9:05Speaker 3: But for the sake of argument, I'm gonna go with
- 9:08Speaker 3: Jacoby because I think he may be the wide receiver,
- 9:14Speaker 3: consistent guy with everybody else making big plays around him.
- 9:18Speaker 5: But I think out of those fours can be really
- 9:20Speaker 5: really close to the top guy.
- 9:21Speaker 4: They gave Jakobe twenty million dollars, so it tells you
- 9:23Speaker 4: what they think he is.
- 9:25Speaker 2: I think the dark horse here, and I don't think
- 9:27Speaker 2: he will necessarily this year, but I think Brenton Strange
- 9:29Speaker 2: is gonna have a big impact on the offense this
- 9:31Speaker 2: season and I think going forward as well.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Yeah, the tight end thing. Adding the tight ends as rookies.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Is by flipping or whatever you call it, it's going
- 9:43Speaker 3: to really help Brenton Strange be a premier, elite tight end.
- 9:46Speaker 3: You may see him all Pro Pro Bowl type guy
- 9:51Speaker 3: with the opportunities gonna have in this offense.
- 9:54Speaker 2: In terms of competition, that's always what we talk about
- 9:56Speaker 2: in training camp. Different position groups have different levels of
- 10:00Speaker 2: but I think one of the more packed terms for
- 10:02Speaker 2: me is the defensive backs, but also the defensive line.
- 10:05Speaker 2: There's a lot of additions, some of them undrafted free agents.
- 10:08Speaker 2: We saw some success from the undrafted guys last year,
- 10:11Speaker 2: but they added Albert Regis to the defensive line this year.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Those are just two groups I had in mind. But
- 10:15Speaker 2: who do you think is gonna be the most competitive? Well,
- 10:18Speaker 2: what do you think is gonna be the most competitive
- 10:19Speaker 2: position group when it comes to training camp?
- 10:21Speaker 5: John, That's a good question.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Uh, I would say, I'll I'll go dB here because
- 10:31Speaker 3: I think how it looks is maybe gonna be the
- 10:33Speaker 3: most interesting I don't know if that competition. I don't
- 10:36Speaker 3: know that there's gonna be Oh my goodness, this guy got.
- 10:39Speaker 5: Cut during camp. I'm so surprised.
- 10:41Speaker 3: But I think how it looks is gonna be very
- 10:43Speaker 3: interesting with safety Antonio Johnson, Ransaw and uh Eric Murray.
- 10:49Speaker 5: How that looks. I think there's gonna be the three guys.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I don't know that it matters to them who quote starts,
- 10:56Speaker 3: who wins the competition to be a starter. I think
- 10:58Speaker 3: realisticly you're gonna have three starters. Travis Hunter, How is
- 11:03Speaker 3: that gonna look?
- 11:04Speaker 5: Travis?
- 11:05Speaker 3: You know, with monetic opposite Jarian and Jordan Lewis might
- 11:10Speaker 3: be the good competition back there. Again, I think they
- 11:13Speaker 3: know their bunch.
- 11:16Speaker 5: How does it look? Will be interesting in training camp.
- 11:18Speaker 4: I'll go with the defensive line Regis, I screwed that
- 11:21Speaker 4: up in the first block. Apologies to the family, Albert
- 11:23Speaker 4: Regis with rookie a Row Row row right. Yeah, those
- 11:29Speaker 4: two guys coming in create a different dynamic behind Devon
- 11:33Speaker 4: Hamilton and Eric Armstead, and I like the depth that
- 11:37Speaker 4: they've created there. And then obviously you know what you've
- 11:39Speaker 4: got with forty one and forty four, and you add
- 11:43Speaker 4: shrig Au and Green back to the mix this year,
- 11:45Speaker 4: and both of those guys look a bit bigger, have
- 11:48Speaker 4: looked again against air but explosive, like the weight room.
- 11:52Speaker 6: Has been a gift to them.
- 11:54Speaker 4: And now you bring in Wesley Williams, who is a
- 11:56Speaker 4: big guy and plays hard. I mean the way that
- 11:59Speaker 4: he practice since I expect that's the way that he plays,
- 12:02Speaker 4: and that is effort, effort, effort. When you've got a
- 12:05Speaker 4: group like that, I think it's gonna be a really
- 12:07Speaker 4: competitive room.
- 12:07Speaker 3: And I'm Johnna a blank on the seventh round pick
- 12:09Speaker 3: from Washington. H me too again, Johnna Blank.
- 12:15Speaker 6: We Shi learning the.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Green and Strie are big stories last.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Year, and in a lot of situations that I've been around,
- 12:25Speaker 3: the team would have assumed that those two guys were
- 12:28Speaker 3: going to develop and were going to be like the
- 12:31Speaker 3: third defensive end.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Uh. This team doesn't take that approach.
- 12:36Speaker 3: So Syrio and Green good stories, who both can play
- 12:39Speaker 3: in the.
- 12:39Speaker 5: NFL, by the way, and both are going to play
- 12:41Speaker 5: a long time.
- 12:43Speaker 3: They are going to be pushed, and that's the spirit
- 12:46Speaker 3: of what this team tries to do.
- 12:47Speaker 5: They do not allow complacency.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Durfy's Prospect X, which was the player that they were
- 12:53Speaker 2: kind of well.
- 12:54Speaker 5: Prospect X is what threw me. That's why I couldn't go.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yes, I mean all the mysteries shrouded around him, but
- 13:00Speaker 2: the most underrated prospect according to UESBMS and.
- 13:03Speaker 5: On this show event in apologies to prospects.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Well, clearly one of our missions this week is to
- 13:09Speaker 4: get to know these guys, these young guys, and put
- 13:11Speaker 4: names and faces together so that when we get to
- 13:13Speaker 4: training camp we know Project X.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about expectations.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Obviously well ahead of what was probably expected out of
- 13:21Speaker 2: Liam Cullen in his first year as a head coach,
- 13:24Speaker 2: but what's reasonable to expect this year? Is it just
- 13:29Speaker 2: getting into the playoffs? Is it having a better record,
- 13:31Speaker 2: because thirteen and four is pretty hard to outdo. Because John,
- 13:35Speaker 2: I think we've talked about this a little bit, it's
- 13:37Speaker 2: almost like they might be better but have not as
- 13:39Speaker 2: good of a record this year. Yeah, it's a distinct possibility.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Look, playoff appearance is clearly an expectation when you go
- 13:47Speaker 3: thirteen and four with a young team with an ascending quarterback.
- 13:50Speaker 3: I don't think anybody, certainly inside the building, anybody looking
- 13:54Speaker 3: at this team who really follows It doesn't expect that.
- 13:59Speaker 3: To me, the storyline for this season will be do
- 14:03Speaker 3: they follow up?
- 14:05Speaker 5: Have not made back to back playoff appearance since ninety
- 14:07Speaker 5: eight ninety nine? Have they?
- 14:10Speaker 3: Do they follow it up with a season where they
- 14:14Speaker 3: are handling those contending expectations and look like a team
- 14:21Speaker 3: that's gonna be there seven out of the next eight year.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Y be a long term contending team with a chance
- 14:27Speaker 3: every year. To me, there's not that much difference between
- 14:30Speaker 3: eleven and six and thirteen and four and fourteen and three.
- 14:33Speaker 3: I mean, and obviously it's in terms of playoff stuff,
- 14:36Speaker 3: but injuries can happen, but it it needs for the
- 14:39Speaker 3: first time in a long time to be a solid
- 14:41Speaker 3: franchise that follows up something like last year with contending
- 14:45Speaker 3: and then you're going into twenty seven. Yes, this is
- 14:47Speaker 3: a solid you know, they haven't been that in two
- 14:50Speaker 3: and a half decades.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Bryan, listen, I'll go all in on this and tell
- 14:54Speaker 4: you I I there were one flag in Cincinnati from
- 14:57Speaker 4: hosting m the AFC playoffs.
- 15:00Speaker 6: One flag.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Now things have to play out the way that they
- 15:02Speaker 4: do and you can't just blanket statement that. But I
- 15:05Speaker 4: look at the best teams in the AFC, and I
- 15:07Speaker 4: look at Denver and New England and both of them
- 15:12Speaker 4: have question marks about where they're at it. They're not
- 15:14Speaker 4: the Chiefs of Old right. I expect this team to
- 15:18Speaker 4: contend in the AFC. I mean I expect them to
- 15:20Speaker 4: be there at the end this year for a couple
- 15:22Speaker 4: of reasons. One, I think the quarterback is real. Two,
- 15:25Speaker 4: I think that the roster is very good. I love
- 15:28Speaker 4: the coaching staff's approach. I love the way that they've
- 15:30Speaker 4: built this team. I think this is as good a
- 15:33Speaker 4: team as there is in the AFC. Now they got
- 15:35Speaker 4: to go. They're gonna bear that out. They've got to
- 15:37Speaker 4: stay healthy. They need Travis Hunter all season long. Their
- 15:40Speaker 4: quarterback does have to play at that high level. They've
- 15:42Speaker 4: got to be better at running the football. They know
- 15:44Speaker 4: all of these things, they've identified them. They have been
- 15:46Speaker 4: very transparent with where they work to get better. I
- 15:50Speaker 4: think this coach is terrific. It's not as strong enough
- 15:54Speaker 4: adjective to describe his play design and his play calling
- 15:57Speaker 4: and the way that he puts things together. And I
- 15:59Speaker 4: think this team is as good as any in the AFC,
- 16:01Speaker 4: and I expect them to be in contention for the
- 16:04Speaker 4: whole ball of wax.
- 16:05Speaker 5: And there should be the expectation. Everybody's talking about the losses.
- 16:08Speaker 3: To me, there were no significant losses in the off
- 16:11Speaker 3: season that shouldn't significant enough to affect uh where this
- 16:17Speaker 3: team is in terms of their power or or or
- 16:21Speaker 3: their potential. And any expectations were created last year very
- 16:24Speaker 3: legitimately by if you're going down a list of in
- 16:29Speaker 3: the off season of who you think the contenders in
- 16:31Speaker 3: the AFC might be.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Okay, you expect the Chiefs.
- 16:33Speaker 3: To be back, the Broncos, Patriots, Texans, Chargers, UH, Ravens,
- 16:40Speaker 3: and Steelers, right, you.
- 16:41Speaker 6: Know that group seems like a reasonable list.
- 16:43Speaker 3: But beat the Chargers, to beat the Broncos, to beat
- 16:45Speaker 3: the Texans once, let you know, and the Chiefs. Every
- 16:49Speaker 3: other team who's making these kind of lists, if they
- 16:51Speaker 3: don't know the Jaguars on it, they're missing it. So
- 16:55Speaker 3: they're one of those teams. And there's no reason you
- 16:57Speaker 3: shouldn't have playoff expectations.
- 16:59Speaker 4: And I do think in and this gets overlooked, the
- 17:01Speaker 4: Jagars last year won thirteen games, guy, and they didn't
- 17:06Speaker 4: radically overhaul the roster. I mean, Liam and Basselli and
- 17:09Speaker 4: Gladstone came in and they brought in Robert Hainsey and
- 17:12Speaker 4: Jordan Lewis and some guys, But I mean no one
- 17:14Speaker 4: was pointing and going, well, that's what's going to get
- 17:16Speaker 4: him over the top. They were really solid contributors all
- 17:19Speaker 4: season long, but they took the roster that won four
- 17:21Speaker 4: and they turned it into thirteen on the strength of
- 17:24Speaker 4: a vision of a standard of the way that they
- 17:26Speaker 4: went about it.
- 17:28Speaker 6: Now this year, they did add.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Some players and put some pieces in place through the
- 17:33Speaker 4: draft that they think.
- 17:34Speaker 6: Will significantly help them.
- 17:35Speaker 4: They shape this roster more closely to the one that
- 17:38Speaker 4: they wanted, and I think that'll be a big difference
- 17:40Speaker 4: for him this year.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's about consistency at this point and what we've
- 17:44Speaker 2: seen they've been able to do continuing that, right, we
- 17:47Speaker 2: see Trevor Lawrence finally finding his own the last two
- 17:50Speaker 2: months of the season, but now carrying that over into
- 17:52Speaker 2: this season.
- 17:53Speaker 3: That's really hege And it's a fair thing for fans
- 17:56Speaker 3: who have been a fan of this team for a
- 17:57Speaker 3: long time to go in with some breath holding U
- 18:01Speaker 3: going in because you haven't seen back to back double
- 18:04Speaker 3: digit you know, make you feel good about the franchise
- 18:08Speaker 3: seasons in not twenty five years. I have zero doubt
- 18:13Speaker 3: that they're gonna be that kind of a team, but
- 18:16Speaker 3: they have.
- 18:16Speaker 5: To show it. And that's the huge storyline this year.
- 18:19Speaker 3: After this season, or you're looking at this thing and
- 18:22Speaker 3: feeling like it did in the nineties where it's like, Okay,
- 18:24Speaker 3: they're gonna contend when they're on the you know, if
- 18:28Speaker 3: if nothing goes wrong, this should be one of the
- 18:29Speaker 3: best teams in the AFC.
- 18:30Speaker 6: Was it that Lilliam said.
- 18:31Speaker 4: I think it was at the owners meetings that they
- 18:32Speaker 4: didn't want the Stenship winning to overshadow, which I thought
- 18:36Speaker 4: was a really interesting way to put it. Hey, you won,
- 18:38Speaker 4: but you can't let that permeate. That was then, this
- 18:41Speaker 4: is now and he's been dog getting determined in keeping
- 18:44Speaker 4: this team focused forward and not on what they did
- 18:46Speaker 4: last year.
- 18:46Speaker 2: There's no talk of defending, that is for sure. It's
- 18:49Speaker 2: all about attacking and seeing what they can do this season.
- 18:52Speaker 2: To say, with the Sun Dagsam, we're gonna answer some
- 18:54Speaker 2: of the fan questions as the break.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Welcome back to JAG's Aam time for ozone mailbag.
- 19:14Speaker 2: John's gonna shares wisdom with us and answer some of
- 19:16Speaker 2: the fan questions.
- 19:18Speaker 1: So we're gonna start I like.
- 19:19Speaker 5: It or not.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Yeah, something's gonna happen. So Charles from Riverside has the
- 19:23Speaker 1: first one.
- 19:23Speaker 2: He says, it seeming the Jags got way better at
- 19:25Speaker 2: eliminating all the pre snap motion false starts and illegal
- 19:29Speaker 2: formation penalties as the offense matured. So what does this
- 19:32Speaker 2: pre snap motion accomplish and why is it such an
- 19:34Speaker 2: important part of Liam Cohen's system.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Yeah, this was sort of a tricky question because it's
- 19:40Speaker 3: it's hard to answer something like this when the answer
- 19:42Speaker 3: is sort of everything right, Like it's if the pre
- 19:48Speaker 3: snap motion, if the Jaguars do, basically tells the quarterback
- 19:53Speaker 3: what the defense is gonna do. And when you see
- 19:56Speaker 3: them go to the line and Trevor's motioning.
- 20:00Speaker 5: The rest of the offense, they're not talking about dinner planes,
- 20:04Speaker 5: you know they are. I it is Trevor saying, Okay,
- 20:07Speaker 5: this is what we've seen.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Now we're canning this play and going to the next play,
- 20:12Speaker 3: or we're sticking with this play.
- 20:15Speaker 5: The reason it was an issue last.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Year earlier, everybody remembers that a lot of prestat penalty,
- 20:21Speaker 3: everybody getting frustrated and The reason Liam didn't go away
- 20:24Speaker 3: from that is because it's really the offensive superpower who
- 20:28Speaker 3: is without it, All of a sudden, you're going to
- 20:31Speaker 3: the line without that inherent edge of seeing what the
- 20:35Speaker 3: defense is doing and calling a play toward that weakness.
- 20:39Speaker 3: So without being snide about it, it's everything. And when
- 20:45Speaker 3: you see Trevor making those cans, where they really liked
- 20:50Speaker 3: his progress early last year was he was calling the
- 20:53Speaker 3: right plays at the line very quickly. So it's everything,
- 20:57Speaker 3: y I even if they have tons of pre snap
- 21:00Speaker 3: motions or penalties, A lot of coach in that situation
- 21:04Speaker 3: last year would have tried to pull out of that,
- 21:07Speaker 3: and I think Liam very much so and correctly. It
- 21:10Speaker 3: was like, look, guys, we got to do this. This
- 21:12Speaker 3: is going to make us very very good, and it
- 21:14Speaker 3: did by the end of last year you can see
- 21:16Speaker 3: the results.
- 21:16Speaker 4: But Liam comes from the Shanahan tree, and back in
- 21:19Speaker 4: the late nineties, you remember when John Elway was there
- 21:21Speaker 4: in Denver with Mike Shanahan. I mean they created mismatches
- 21:25Speaker 4: with personnel groups like few other teams could. And I
- 21:28Speaker 4: think I've said on the show a couple of times,
- 21:30Speaker 4: I always like watching the San Francisco forty nine ers.
- 21:32Speaker 6: Hardon me because the Niners and Kyle.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Shanahan do such great things with motion and create the
- 21:38Speaker 4: kind of mismatches that allow them to take advantage. And
- 21:41Speaker 4: I think that's what Liam Cohen does. Very simplistic, but
- 21:43Speaker 4: they're trying to figure out where the greatest advantage for
- 21:45Speaker 4: the offense is by getting Parker Washington if they can
- 21:49Speaker 4: lined up on a slower linebacker.
- 21:50Speaker 5: YEA.
- 21:51Speaker 3: A scheme in play calling is not always the end all,
- 21:56Speaker 3: but when you're special at something, which Liam is at this, yup,
- 22:00Speaker 3: it is something. And for Liam, the way he calls
- 22:03Speaker 3: plays you saw at the end of last year there
- 22:05Speaker 3: was uh high end stuff going on. He's cutting edge
- 22:10Speaker 3: of what the NFL is doing right now, and the
- 22:12Speaker 3: pre snap stuff is a big part of it.
- 22:14Speaker 5: It's that's why we're talking about it.
- 22:15Speaker 1: And it operates as we've discussed before.
- 22:17Speaker 2: So much autonomy is given to Trevor Lawrence to conduct
- 22:20Speaker 2: this and and make those calls at the line and
- 22:22Speaker 2: getting everybody on the same page so communication. They worked
- 22:26Speaker 2: on it looking better towards the end, and I imagine
- 22:28Speaker 2: it'll look even better going forward.
- 22:29Speaker 3: I think it's d maybe one real key that you
- 22:33Speaker 3: see at the beginning of the season, you how do
- 22:36Speaker 3: you want it to look?
- 22:38Speaker 5: That's how you want it to look. I'm sure Lee
- 22:39Speaker 5: would tell you. Look, we wanted to look much.
- 22:42Speaker 3: More efficient pre snap at the end of it they
- 22:44Speaker 3: did the end of the beginning of last year.
- 22:47Speaker 5: A And I'd be stunned if it's.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Not all right. Steve from Nashville wants to know, John, Oh,
- 22:52Speaker 2: Let's tell are you aware of a list anywhere that
- 22:55Speaker 2: shows the former Jaguars players who went on to win
- 22:57Speaker 2: a Super Bowl with another team, Seattle Seahawks kicker Jason
- 23:00Speaker 2: Myers being the latest addition to said list, if said
- 23:04Speaker 2: list exists.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not sure there's a list.
- 23:06Speaker 3: And this is always kind of a thing, Brian, that
- 23:09Speaker 3: always kind of surprises me every time, Like and it's
- 23:13Speaker 3: it sort of stems from fifteen or twenty five years
- 23:16Speaker 3: of not achieving as much as the franchise as fans wanted.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Which stopped last year.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Uh, guys get cut from NFL teams these days cause
- 23:25Speaker 3: of free instin salary calf and they go on to
- 23:27Speaker 3: other teams. Sometimes those guys go on and they contribute
- 23:32Speaker 3: a Super Bowl champion. There's been guys I mean, uh,
- 23:35Speaker 3: backup quarterback was a deal for a long time.
- 23:37Speaker 5: Gabbert got a ring, the left which got a ring,
- 23:39Speaker 5: but now got a ring.
- 23:41Speaker 3: I've never considered this topic as big a deal as
- 23:44Speaker 3: like some fans do.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Yeah, Jason Myers got a ring. I I Jason Myers
- 23:47Speaker 5: a good kid. Uh, good for him. He can put
- 23:49Speaker 5: it on his shelf.
- 23:49Speaker 6: Let me tell you the first one. It was Desmond Howard.
- 23:51Speaker 4: If you recall, jag Wars cut him in nineteen ninety
- 23:53Speaker 4: six and he signed on with the Green Bay and
- 23:55Speaker 4: one one the very next year.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Uh, Josh Wells comes to mind.
- 23:58Speaker 4: He left here and went to Tampa and won a
- 24:01Speaker 4: Super Bowl ring with those Tom Brady teams. There are
- 24:03Speaker 4: a handful of guys in terms of premier players.
- 24:08Speaker 3: It's not like there's been a lot of guys go
- 24:10Speaker 3: on that the team has released. And well, Jayleen Ramsey
- 24:15Speaker 3: all of a sudden become a huge, huge part of
- 24:18Speaker 3: that next too, and Jalen was kind of the outlier
- 24:21Speaker 3: on that. And so they've probably picked up more big
- 24:25Speaker 3: free agents who have contributed really than I think they've
- 24:28Speaker 3: lost over the years. I don't have a list, but
- 24:32Speaker 3: it feels like that writing Klais and Clays was, you know,
- 24:35Speaker 3: big time reason they won. I can't remember that many
- 24:37Speaker 3: guys who've gone on and been like huge reasons teams
- 24:40Speaker 3: have been good elsewhere, but there's probably a list somewhere.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Kyle Brady went was a part of that undefeated Patriots
- 24:45Speaker 4: team that lost to the super Bowl.
- 24:47Speaker 6: So it's happened.
- 24:48Speaker 1: All right, We're gonna close this out with Josh from
- 24:50Speaker 1: Green Bay.
- 24:50Speaker 2: He says, what would you say is your favorite football quote?
- 24:55Speaker 2: A few that come to mind for me are playoffs
- 24:58Speaker 2: by Jim Mora. Of course just win Baby by Al Davis,
- 25:01Speaker 2: and of course Bam by John Matten.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 3: I mean there's a lot, Uh you play to win
- 25:08Speaker 3: the game. Uh, they are what they thought we were.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Or Dennis Gram I remember watching that. No, you know,
- 25:15Speaker 3: those are the fun stuff. I was actually at the
- 25:18Speaker 3: press conference where Jim Moore, based on you know, famously
- 25:21Speaker 3: said playoffs, playoffs, and I loved Jim so th it
- 25:25Speaker 3: was I you know, uh, he was much more than
- 25:29Speaker 3: that quote, but you get defined by those moments. My
- 25:33Speaker 3: favorite is, uh from offensive coordinator Tom Moore when I
- 25:35Speaker 3: was with the Colts, where he famously said, hey, uh,
- 25:38Speaker 3: you know if we lose Peyton, we're not in good shape,
- 25:44Speaker 3: and we don't practice not in good shape and you
- 25:46Speaker 3: can insert, uh, the proper word.
- 25:49Speaker 5: Dirty word.
- 25:50Speaker 3: But so that's really the best one, I mean, and
- 25:52Speaker 3: it it summed up tom of uh very meat and potatoes.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Very Hey, this is what we're doing. H he was
- 25:59Speaker 3: very real football. That's my favorite. I'm sure there's others.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Well, I mean, you could grab Dncel Lombardi and just go.
- 26:05Speaker 4: It's a laundry list of Lombardi quotes through the years. Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I know.
- 26:09Speaker 4: When I was in college, I used to work at
- 26:10Speaker 4: a CBS station in Kansas City and I would stay
- 26:12Speaker 4: late on Sundays to get the my Dick of feed
- 26:15Speaker 4: from Chicago because Mike Dick was always good at every
- 26:18Speaker 4: press conference for something.
- 26:19Speaker 6: But I'll go with John McKay, the.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Coach of the Buccaneers in their expansion season and for
- 26:25Speaker 4: a couple of seasons after that. And he was asked
- 26:27Speaker 4: at one point because remember they lost twenty six straight
- 26:29Speaker 4: games before they won their first game, and he was
- 26:32Speaker 4: asked about his team's execution, and he said, I'm all
- 26:35Speaker 4: for it, right, And then to follow up, he said,
- 26:38Speaker 4: what do you think about your team's tackling. He said, well,
- 26:40Speaker 4: we tackled poorly today, but we made up for it
- 26:42Speaker 4: by not blocking. I mean, there's just there's this incredible
- 26:45Speaker 4: stuff from coaches all the time. They're always had these guys,
- 26:49Speaker 4: especially the crusty old ones who've been around the league
- 26:51Speaker 4: for a long time.
- 26:51Speaker 6: They're always with these quips in one liners.
- 26:54Speaker 4: And you could write a whole book, I mean a
- 26:56Speaker 4: thousand pages of NFL coaches quotes.
- 26:59Speaker 6: But I always thought thought that the guy who.
- 27:00Speaker 4: Could kind of laugh at himself and his team, you know,
- 27:02Speaker 4: at the end of the day, kind of just a
- 27:04Speaker 4: little quip here and there when things weren't good was
- 27:07Speaker 4: my favorite.
- 27:08Speaker 3: And my favorite player growing up was John Riggins. Oh yeah,
- 27:11Speaker 3: I played for Washington and after a loss they were
- 27:14Speaker 3: really good eighty three I think it was they lost
- 27:18Speaker 3: a Green Bay forty eight forty seven. After the game,
- 27:20Speaker 3: he said, sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear
- 27:22Speaker 3: eats you.
- 27:23Speaker 6: Yeah, here we go.
- 27:25Speaker 2: I don't give the Jets credit a ton, but I
- 27:26Speaker 2: think I'm gonna go with her. Edwards, you play the
- 27:29Speaker 2: way the game because that's why you play. You played
- 27:31Speaker 2: the win the game. Jaguars are taking part in mandatory
