- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talkin Tech Podcast.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonigal is here.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how we doing, buddy?
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: Buddy, my voice is not doing great because you know what's harder than being a football player out there on the gridiron on a Friday night?
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: It's being a fan and doing that home environment.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: That's harder, dude.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: You sit there and yell the whole time.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Just getting pissed off at inopportune times with children around you.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, you really see your your G dang it was a little loud.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 1:24SPEAKER_04: And it's just like, brother, relax.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: Take it down a line.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Or before before before we discuss the escapades that transpired in Levick, Texas this weekend, we need to do a thing, Tristan, because not only did Texas Tech play a football game this weekend, Texas Tech won a football game this weekend.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: And what do we do on the Talk and Tech podcast?
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: This is a non-hesitation play the dang song, Steven.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: We are going to play the song.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Undefeated, some would call that.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: This season in college football.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: Mathematicians would say that's undefeated.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: That's what some have said is if you have a zero there on the right side of your record, that's a good thing.
- 2:39SPEAKER_04: I agree.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: I think that is a good thing.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: And you are number 11 in this great United States of America.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: I was hoping you'd crack 10, just so you can say you're top 10.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: But let's just slam Samuson State and make it so.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: You know, there's time.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: There's time with the schedule.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: There's time with how the rest of the the 10 teams that are above you right now are going to play throughout the season.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: And dude, you're happy to get away.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: That's plain and simple.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: You're just happy to beat the Houston Cougars because we here on the Talk and Tech Podcast respect the Houston Cougars, at least the 2026 Houston Cougars, because that is a damn good football team.
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: Dude, that's absolutely a really good football team.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: And so many people, including commentators, including one idiot on this podcast, and not this idiot, thought that we were going to lose that football game.
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: But we are both correct that it came down to the wire.
- 3:41SPEAKER_04: A beautiful thing about that win, Steven, is it made history.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: Because you just evened the all-time series against the Houston Cougars.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: And that's a beautiful thing because in on no planet should they have had that over us.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: So it's good to see us really get back on top of it after they romped us in the 80s.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, pretty they but pretty much all their wins came pre-1990.
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: So almost all of them except for one.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: We don't even talk about that one.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: That one didn't matter.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: That was 2009.
- 4:16SPEAKER_04: And so they have not done that since pretty much any of these players uh can remember anything.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: So that's that's a good feeling, man.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: Eight in a row against the Houston Cougars.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: Uh, what does that make it two in a row as conference mates?
- 4:29SPEAKER_04: So I I think you're you're cooking up.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: Oh, is that three in a row as conference mates?
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: It might be three.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: You're cooking.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Regardless, you're cooking.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's going good.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: Regardless, things are going well in your matchups against the Houston Cougars in football and in basketball.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: But we'll get to that down the line.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: We were at this game.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: We we were here.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: We participated uh in the blackout.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: It was a great atmosphere.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: There was a flyover, there was an LED band uh performance, there was a drone show, there was a light show, and when I say that Texas Tech has completely stepped up the game day experience, I do not mean it lightly.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: It was awesome.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, dude.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: Textech is really leaning into building up, like you said, that game day experience.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: Uh it's absolutely one of the most electric atmospheres in the country.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: And I think you're lying to yourself if you disagree with it, especially with the momentum the program has behind it.
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: Like it's all it's not like a smoke and mirrors thing.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: We haven't lost in that stadium in over eight games.
- 5:38SPEAKER_04: So it's it's a real phenomenon happening there in Lubbock, Texas.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: And like I said, man, the drone show and the uh the the new stadium lights, and of course, new stadium itself, it's just it's gets so loud on there, man.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: The Red Raider Faithful bring it, and it's just a fun thing to be a part of.
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: And we kind of spoke about this before the podcast.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: There is no better place to watch a football game than at your favorite team's home stadium.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: But you do kind of miss the game in a lot of ways at the same time because you're swept up in the atmosphere itself, just getting excited about everything, like good thing happened, yes, you know, and you just freak out or bad thing happened, I'm upset, without really, you know, taking in like because whatever you're watching on TV, you're like a student, like yes.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: Okay, I see what they were doing with that play.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: The analysis, the aerial view, the replay.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: We can see everything, and uh no, we yeah, you can't, it's it's a different type of of atmosphere.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: And and when you have a podcast like this, you do have to watch the television copy to kind of understand what's going on.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Also, maybe you know, nine or ten beers may have you know shifted some of the things.
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: I was drinking Coca-Cola all day slept in two days.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: High on your own supply of caffeine, baby.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Um bubbles.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: And bubbles.
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: I want to talk about the game.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: I have a few points.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Some good, some bad.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: Is that what this podcast is for?
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we talk about football.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: Um during football season.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: During basketball season, it's a little different.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: But again, let's talk about this game that we just witnessed in Lubbock, Texas.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, my first point here Will Hammond the quarterback.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: So I think naturally, when you're talking about this game, you should start with Will Hammond because he's the best quarterback in the country with the worst overall stat line through three games.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: Um he has three touchdowns tied for 87th in the nation right now, uh, and two interceptions.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: Normally, you'd see that stat line and be like, oh, this guy.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: He's not very good.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Three touchdowns, two interceptions, through three games.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: What is happening?
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, have you seen those three touchdowns?
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: Because they've all been tremendous.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: They've been fantastic.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: And the Houston game in particular, you saw the growth of Will Hammond.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: You saw a guy who was unafraid.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: You saw what we saw last year in a lot of times for Will Hammond, where truly fearless and going after it, slinging the rock, not really playing loose, because that is a big point of emphasis that we talked about and many others did last, you know, on the last two games of Texas Tech was Will Hammond needs to go out there and be Will Hammond.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: He doesn't need to be reserved, Will Hammond.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: He doesn't need to overthink it, he just needs to go and do it.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: And I think against Houston, he absolutely went out there and did it.
- 8:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think you saw a guy that came alive.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: I think you saw a kid who's stepping into the shoes of his role, of what that is on this football team.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: And that's to be a leader, dude.
- 8:49SPEAKER_04: You gotta go out there and just ball out, especially since you're playing with a team that, you know, I I can't believe we're doing this after a Houston win, but you know it's probably not as good as last year's team.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: So you do have to will it a little harder.
- 9:02SPEAKER_04: That's a good pun.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: That was not intended.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: Um you do have to you thank you, thank you.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: You do have to will it a little harder.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: Like with Bear Morton as good as he was, he could just act as a manager because the team was that damn good.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: With Will, you kind of have to add a little spice into that offensive mix, man, and he brought it.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: And one thing that really stood out to me about this offense with the helm of Will Hammond was balance in this game.
- 9:29SPEAKER_04: And he really spread the ball out, like he wasn't glued to one receiver, he took what was there.
- 9:35SPEAKER_04: Now, I think the receivers, you know, they could still step it up a little bit more, but all in all, you saw him spreading that love around, and the guys helped make it work.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: So it was really kind of like a homecoming game for Will Hammond, and this is a guy you clearly feel confident in to win you a lot of football games.
- 9:52SPEAKER_04: Because remember, the Cole at the beginning of the season was to win a national championship.
- 9:56SPEAKER_04: Now, I really hope that happens.
- 9:58SPEAKER_04: But I think Will is starting to show that we perhaps there's some magic at quarterback, man.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: I think this was a major turning point in the season, this game, and that might be an overreaction, but I think the way that the team came together to beat this Houston team who was on it this game.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: I think this is a complete and major turning point, and we could look back at this game and be like, okay, that's where it turned.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: That's where things started to really click for the 2026 Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: He played with an edge.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Um you know, it wasn't just the running, but seeing him call his shot on a quarterback draw straight up the middle for you know a 40-yard gain, ram into the Houston linebacker, and and honestly, he could have avoided him, but he he just rammed into him.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, get up there, wave his arms, and hype up the crowd.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: And unfortunately, you know, he threw the interception due to Micah Hudson slipping right after that.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: But that play, I think, solidified his growth that he's taken and the step forward that he's taken this season.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: So I just think this is a major confidence boost for him.
- 11:12SPEAKER_04: I think you're I think you're seeing, like you said, like an angry Will Hammond just get out there and just being a football player and just acting like a guy who's maturing in what he's supposed to be for the team.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: Um, so it's just it's just so good for him to kind of start getting some respect, uh, not only from the fans, but from the coaches, and hopefully eventually the media too.
- 11:36SPEAKER_04: Not that that really matters, but it is nice to see the team start getting her some respect.
- 11:40SPEAKER_04: I like that he said this was a turning point.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: And whenever you say is it a turning point, do you mean mostly just for Will?
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: Or do you think for the whole team?
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: I think it's one and the same.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Uh your quarterback is your leader, and you follow his lead in a lot of ways.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: And if you see your young quarterback come into his own and start to play, I think he helped rally.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: And there were other guys, obviously, that came in.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: I think Cash Cleveland was one of those guys this game.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Coy made some big catch.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Kenny Johnson was one of those guys this game.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Um what I would consider the most idiotic start to the game, probably of all time, um, from uh individual coaching staff, um to turn it around after a poor first quarter and really just take off from there and go beat a darn good Houston team?
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Um they did it.
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I I I obviously with a win like this, you want to keep criticisms pretty light, um, but and we'll get to them.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: But I really like the point that you're making that it's a turning point for the season, and you can't help but wonder, did this team need a gutsy win?
- 13:02SPEAKER_04: Was a gutsy one what was missing from last year?
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: You know, because you just BTA everybody last year, and you don't really see much adversity.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: And the only game you lost, you can make up a bunch of excuses for it.
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: But with this, you do a uh a two-point conversion hold to win what is essentially a buzzer beater game.
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: Um, and I I just can't help but wonder if that injects a raw, salty boost into that locker room and into that mentality of the way the players can treat the rest of the schedule.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: That we we are some dogs, and we can we can come out of any fight and win it, regardless of what the other team is doing, because Houston's a damn good team, and I think Houston's gonna go on and rip off possibly another 10-win season.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: We've uh we've seen it both ways.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: So I don't know.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: I I think this is a locker room win, a team win for Texas Tech, a feel-good win, a a let's turn some stuff around type of win for Texas Tech.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: But it's a long season.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: And, you know, you're riding high off of a game like this, but we've also seen letdown games after games like this.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: So it's uh, you know, I'll I'll reserve my my takes on that piece of it, but I do think that Will Hammond himself took a major step that he needed in the right direction for this one.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: And the the team did as a whole, but but Will especially.
- 14:34SPEAKER_04: If so, if if if you had to step aside from just staring at the quarterback, which do you think are uh our running backs or receivers had a better game this go around?
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, you would have to point to individuals, right?
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: I think Kenny Johnson, I I will eat as much crow as possible.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Not that I thought Kenny Johnson was gonna be a bad player, I just did not think he had wide receiver one potential on this team.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: And you saw in this game, he made four ridiculous plays.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: And they were all four of his catches.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: They were all fantastic, they were all needed in big moments, and uh, I mean, he he surprised the heck out of me.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: You see that come come back from Will putting it in in the spot that he needed to, turnaround one-handed grab, sliding out of bounds.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: You also kind of ran the route wrong route with Jacoby Williams on the touchdown.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: They both ended up in that same place, and Will dropped it right in his lap.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Um, you saw Will's first real big completion, the first real offensive positive play for Texas Tech, where Will was scrambling outside of the pocket, threw it for Kenny coming back, and then he made another big play, I think, in the fourth quarter.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Um, he was fantastic in this.
- 15:52SPEAKER_04: That dude was no joke.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: He's been your he's been your best receiver all season.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: Um, but he he really solidified it with this one.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then, you know, welcome to the party, Cam Dickey.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: How about you?
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: He came alive for the first time this season.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: And, you know, if you're looking at your two your two running backs that have contributed the most this season, and you know, we said three-headed monster going in, but honestly, uh when's the last time you saw three running backs actually contribute for a team in a in a very equal way?
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Um, it does it's hard to do.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: There's just not enough snaps in the game.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, well, I'll I'll talk positively about Cam Dickey and Jacoby Williams.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: And who knows, maybe Quinn Joyner could do something here in the next coming games, but he's kind of the odd man out right now because Jacoby is Jacoby.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: And honestly, for him only to get seven carries this game is ridiculous.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: But he's he's been far and away your best running back.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: But Cam Dickey doing what he did against Houston gives you another element to this offense that you had last year that you needed this year, and I'm glad he came alive in this one.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was about to say, I know I know three-headed monster is obviously a big puff piece with that, but it's not a stretch to say two-headed monster right now, man.
- 17:08SPEAKER_04: It just I think I think the reason why is because those two just offered two completely different tools from your running back.
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: So I think you're gonna see it a game-by-game situation where one of them is just gonna be the right piece to win the game, while the you know the other one's just gonna have to wait for the next game to where that's they're gonna be the breakout weapon to put it over.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, I I think I think you're spot on, dude.
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: And it's it you're like you said, it's just an individual uh skill position showdown there, and it was it was awesome to see a few guys really break free, but it's kind of been a repeat thing that like like you kind of pointed at to like eating crow about it, but Kenny John Johnson might just indeed be the guy you build to throw passing game around at this point, and obviously you want to spread that ball around, but if you need a deep ball, he's obviously your guy, right?
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I think if you need if you're you need a go-to guy right now, and you know, Terrence Carter's dealing with an injury.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: Uh he had a big drop in the first quarter.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: I I think everyone kind of outside of Kenny Johnson needs to improve on the receiving court.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Like Coy had a big drop.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: Micah has been kind of abysmal this season.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Terrence Carter had a massive drop in that first quarter.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, it would have been 40-50 yard gain and uh just dropped it.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, just to just you know, getting ahead of yourself.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Coy, you know, dropped the fourth down ball that you know he should have caught.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: It was put in the right spot.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: You you're supposed to make a play there as your receiver, and and you did not.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: Uh on Will's interception, Micah slipped.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, I, you know, the ball wasn't necessarily he should have thrown it earlier, but also, you know, what are you doing?
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: You just straight up slipped.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: And uh Mike wasn't there to contest it, yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and so you know, your receivers have not been phenomenal as a unit, I don't think, to start the year, but Kenny Johnson has been that guy all season.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: So credit to him.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, the other guys, and and you know, hopefully they'll have their moment.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: TC, I I think is really dealing with an injury that he probably shouldn't have played on necessarily, um, and might miss the Sam Easy State game coming up.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Um, with but maybe he needs to.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Maybe he needs to really heal on that foot and uh make sure it looks good before uh throwing him out there because we're gonna need him down the line.
- 19:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I hope we rest him.
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: If it's even like a suspicion that he should probably miss the game, why would you even think about playing him?
- 19:36SPEAKER_04: So I mean you you have you have the you have enough depth at tight end to beat Samuel Sin State.
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: So I really think you let the guy rest, especially so you can you can uh pop him out again whenever things get a little dicey again in the in the schedule.
- 19:49SPEAKER_04: So not that, honestly, not that I get that dicey for a while, but we will that's of course a different conversation.
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: Um, and I really hope that we're not talking about Micah as a bust yet, but we're still waiting for that moment.
- 20:01SPEAKER_04: There just hasn't been that moment yet.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: If anything, it's been more frustrations than anything.
- 20:07SPEAKER_04: So like it he's caused us pain rather than just indifference, and that's concerning.
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: So it's it's one thing to not exactly be a productive piece yet, it's another thing to be a detriment.
- 20:19SPEAKER_04: And he's been a flat out detriment in two games.
- 20:22SPEAKER_04: So I hope we can see that improve, um, especially with all the hype in his story.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: So I I I feel like there's like there's got to be a game down the line where he just he does something nuts, and we're like, there he is.
- 20:33SPEAKER_04: That's who he was supposed to be.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I mean, you know, there have been moments where he's blocked pretty well.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: I think that's actually been a positive for him this season.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I mean, he he's not necessarily getting open, and the few times that Will's tried to get it to him, he just hasn't made the play.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: So it's been a rough start to the season for him.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: Um, all reserve judgment because my entire opinion on Micah Hudson, uh, all expectations have been very minimalized over and I I want to say that I was early on that with Micah, um, not trying to toot my own horn or anything, but I was like, hey, maybe this guy's not ready to play football yet at this level, and clearly he's not.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: So, you know, and and this is his first year starting, this is first year getting a high snap count.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we will see.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: And I do think that he will have a game down the line where he becomes very important for you.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, he's just gotta keep uh keep on keeping on.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: I don't want to breeze past the quarterback thing.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: I need to come back to it.
- 21:39SPEAKER_04: Can you can can you can you like wait until we get the last positives out of the offense?
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: We just subjuced a squeeze.
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: That's fine.
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: Um the O line was nasty.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: They were good.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: They stepped up, dude.
- 21:52SPEAKER_04: They played with a tenacity that has been missing on this team.
- 21:55SPEAKER_04: And I just feel like you can't get a machine running until the big uglies.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Get humming and dude, they played tough, and they finally were able to let you break through with a fantastic rushing performance.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: Um, as well as they get a really good job of protecting Will, dude.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: And that's that D-line on Houston is no freaking joke.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: It's probably the best uh D-line you're gonna face all season, and you more or less kept them in check, dude.
- 22:24SPEAKER_04: Like you were we you were able to let your your quarterback have a breakout game against a really good defense that says a lot about how you're playing.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Look, they played with some some shit to them, you know, with this one.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: Uh Cash Cleveland came in there.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: Clat Clash, Cash Cleveland came in there, both cool.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: Just a cool name, cool guy.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: Uh looks like kind of a you know, just a little tubby boy, but he's out here, he's out here, came in at the uh the left guard, replaced Sam Brano, and was a difference maker.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: And not just because of the viral video of him, you know, screaming run the damn ball.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: That was cool.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: It was awesome, don't get me wrong, but he just showed a little more that you need, a little more nasty, and that's why he's listed as first on the depth chart for left guard.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: That's why he's gonna start against Sam Houston State.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: He's earned um, you know, he he is an undersized guy, he's not necessarily, you know, you don't look at him and be like, oh man, this guy's gonna be a difference maker.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: But what Joey has been reiterating ever since the game ended is you need some disruptors.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: And Cash Cleveland was a disruptor.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: He came in there and made a difference and showed some stuff, showed a little leadership, showed a little fight, and uh it was awesome to see.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: Also, shout out Daniel Sill.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: He came in for the final touchdown drive after Howard Sampson went out for a little bit, came over at the uh he played right tackle.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: They moved Ponton over to left tackle, and uh they had him play right tackle, and he made a pancake block there for one of the Cam Dickey runs right before he ran into the end zone a couple plays later and was huge.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: And this is a guy who hasn't played much all season and came in and was ferocious and just showed tenacity.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: You know, I thought Ponton had a big game for a guy who has had a poor start to the season.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: Um, he had the lead block on the final Cam Dickey touchdown.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Jordan Church played well, Sherry played well, uh there Howard Sampson played well.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: It's it was just really, really solid.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: And they can be better, they can still get better, but this game they did enough and they they overperformed what they've been doing.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: It was just good to see some juice from them.
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: You know, just just again, see see some drive.
- 24:43SPEAKER_04: So I I really hope it continues.
- 24:45SPEAKER_04: Um, we're we're we're wondering where it was for the first three games, um, first two games, I should say.
- 24:50SPEAKER_04: Um, because you know, this was a really hyped up unit coming into the year.
- 24:53SPEAKER_04: Like this is they were talking about how this was the best unit we could have we have ever seen at Texas Tech.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: So I'm I'm really hoping to see we can see some more of that salty dogness in them.
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: And uh I'm not gonna hold you back anymore, dude.
- 25:06SPEAKER_04: You can finally complain like and just and just get your spell out.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: We talked last episode about two quarterbacks and how I didn't like it.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: I don't like two quarterbacks.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Doesn't make sense.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: You have one quarterback, yeah, no need to have another quarterback.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: You got one of them, only one of them plays at a time.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: And the decision from Mac Lefwich and Joey McGuire to start Castellanos, play Castellanos on the first drive of the game when you've all off season, all into the season, after the Soresby situation, you're like, Will Hammond's our guy.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: Will's our guy, he's awesome, we're so glad he stayed, he's gonna be awesome at Texas Tech.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: You grab this quarterback out of the transfer portal a week before the season, and for some reason you feel like you need to utilize him constantly.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: And Mac talked about it, Joey talked about it, and it still doesn't make sense why you threw him in at the very beginning of the game for him just to roll out of the pocket and throw a throwaway ball not far enough out of bounds for the Houston defender to catch it.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: So my beef is not necessarily with Tommy Castellanos.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: I d do I think he's a good quarterback?
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: Not really.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think he's a great, I don't think he's a great player.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: I think he provides something.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: I I think he's a one-dimensional guy who can provide you some quickness in the red zone for certain packages.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: That's what I think he is.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: There's no reason in the world that you throw him out there first.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: There's zero reason.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: I and I do not buy into this, we're trying to piss off Will so he would play better.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: I don't think that's true.
- 27:04SPEAKER_02: I think Mac Lefowitch likes Tommy Castellanos way too much and wants to use him way too much.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: And I think Joey, being the narrative guy, is like, hey, Will's now pissed off and played awesome, so good news for us.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: But that was a poor decision, one of the worst decisions I've seen from this coaching staff in a long time.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: And I yelled, I screamed, I probably made a few children cry in the stands for a little bit.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: Um, and I just sat dumbfounded.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is the most idiotic decision I've ever seen from an offensive coordinator at Texas Tech.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Do you think I watched David Yoast?
- 27:50SPEAKER_04: Thankfully, Mac redeems himself and puts enough uh points on the board to win the game, but uh I I'm with you.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: I'm just trying to dissect the decision, and I think the first place my mind goes is trying to catch Houston immediately off guard.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: And you were you were seven and a half point favorites, by the way.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: And you're trying to catch the away team off guard in your home stadium?
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, I mean, but you're still playing the bet one of the best defenses in the conference.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: No, I know.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying you don't have to get so freaking gimmicky.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Play your quarterback who's good at football.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: I I'm I'm absolutely with you.
- 28:30SPEAKER_04: I'm just trying to walk through the mind paces here.
- 28:33SPEAKER_04: I'm wondering what their idea was.
- 28:35SPEAKER_04: You put out the backup quarterback.
- 28:37SPEAKER_04: That immediately makes them scratch their head, and then on top of that, they're they're gonna probably, you know, sell out to the run, and you can see if you get one over top of them immediately and break out for a one-play touchdown.
- 28:51SPEAKER_04: I think that would that's where my mind goes.
- 28:54SPEAKER_04: That's what I think happened.
- 28:55SPEAKER_04: I thought Mac was gonna come out here and try to get a surprise one-play touchdown immediately by throwing them off.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: I think that was his game plan.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: But I'm I'm not Mac and I'm I'm not with Joey.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: So maybe that wasn't the case.
- 29:10SPEAKER_04: Then maybe maybe they were just like, let's just piss off the fans for a second.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: So they sure pissed me off for a second.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: Um, I it's not that big a deal in the grand scheme.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Like you still won, but if you lost, and if anything, and if anything, this is a good thing because uh the fans will be enraged if they throw Tommy Castellanos in there pre any red zone.
- 29:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and they don't need to.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: They don't need to.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: There's no way that they need to.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: You don't need to open up more packages for Tommy Castellanos.
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: Maybe you just have Will Hammond go in there and be a quarterback.
- 29:49SPEAKER_04: It it's kind of it was kind of like hilariously both times they put Tony in Tony and Thomas Thomas in in the middle of the field.
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: It's been an unmitigated disaster both times.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: Every time and like that's gotta say something to you at this point.
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: And I I'm with you.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: I I don't know how you don't just ride will until you're real deep in the red zone.
- 30:17SPEAKER_04: And I know do you even like that switch up?
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: It's clearly working okay enough.
- 30:24SPEAKER_04: You're getting some touchdowns out enough out of it.
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: I know, I know.
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: But I know you don't think it's necessary.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: We've seen some positive plays in the red zone.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Tommy Castellanos has scored some touchdowns.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: Um I I would be happy if I never saw him play another snap for Texas Tech again.
- 30:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: Unless unless you're blowing a team out.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: If we go to the city.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: If we're up by 30 against Sam Hughes State, go throw in Tommy.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: Go do what you want.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: What the hell?
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: But after that, I'm good.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: I'm out.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: No more number four.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: I like number four on defense.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: I like how David Martin played.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: I don't like uh I don't like Tommy Castellanos, and I want him I want no part of him anymore.
- 31:06SPEAKER_04: So is that a good segue?
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: You want to talk about the defense?
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about the defense.
- 31:11SPEAKER_04: Take it away.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: Well, you want to start with the positives or the negatives?
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: Please.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: I got a little bit of both here.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: Um very improved, much improved.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: The defensive line, the pressure.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: Um you know, Connor Wegman is slippery.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: And he is trying to take him down.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: He's a good quarterback, and he played a damn good game.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: You gotta wonder if AM is like, well, they sure they sure would rather have him than the other guy right now.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I can tell you that much.
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: But um, no, I think you got some good consistent pressure.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: Uh, it was nice to see Trey White out there, even though he's not at 100%.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, he did get a sack this game.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: You did see Adam Trick finally, finally get to the quarterback and cause the fumble.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: You saw a true freshman, and I'll get okay, I'll get to my overreaction right now.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: Ladamian Guyden is going to be one of the greatest players to ever wear a red raider uniform.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: I'm saying that right now.
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: That's my that's my overreaction from this.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: That is an overreaction.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: He's 17 years old.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: That is bananas.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: He's supposed to be a senior in high school right now, playing his like third game of his senior year of high school.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: And instead, he's playing legitimate snaps for Texas Tech, the number 11 team in the nation, and he's making a difference.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, you're seeing him out there, and you're like, this kid isn't there's no way that he's 17 years old.
- 32:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: As a freshman.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is what people wanted Micah Hudson to be.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: Immediate, like, come in here and just be a contributor right away.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: As he gets his feet under him and starts to bulk a little more and get himself in a weight room.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: Like, I am so excited to see this guy after an offseason at Texas Tech, a full offseason of just growing and getting technique down.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Because if he's contributing like this, he's been with the program for uh a month and a half, and he's 17, and he's doing this type of stuff, it's ridiculous.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: So, my overreaction is that if he stays at Texas Tech, and I truly, truly hope he does for his entire cause career, he's gonna go down as one of the best players to ever wear a Red Raider uniform.
- 33:30SPEAKER_04: Well, shoot, dude.
- 33:31SPEAKER_04: I mean, whenever you got a coach like Sheil Wood guiding you, and you're starting and you're and you're playing real minutes at 17 years old in power four football, and you're probably getting a pretty juicy check in the mail to do it, I don't see why you would depart.
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: So I I I I think we're hopefully gonna have, like you say, a rising star, and you're already assuming that we're retiring this kid's jersey on the wall in the Jones.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry, Galaxy.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: You could still say the Jones.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: That's okay.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: Um, no, that's just my my overreaction.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: And obviously, you know, it's an overreaction, take it for what it is.
- 34:12SPEAKER_02: But he's been tremendous.
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: I love that take.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: I love that take.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: I'm very happy to have him on your team contributing this year, um, especially as Trey White gets back and healthy, because I think Trey White is going to be your best pass rusher this season.
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: He just needs to get there.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Um, Adam Trick, I love that he finally got to the quarterback.
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: I love that he caused the fumble.
- 34:32SPEAKER_02: You know who recovered that fumble?
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Ledamian Guyton.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: Um, I think you saw an interior line play pretty good.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: I thought uh I thought Eero, oh my god, I can't say his name.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna say Mateen.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: Um I thought Mateen played better.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, he obviously was part of the big tackle at the end of the game that uh that stopped Wegman about two centimeters short of the uh the end zone on the two-point conversion.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: Um I thought Leventure played well in his snaps.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Um, and and you know, you're you're showing some of your depth there against a good, a really good Houston offensive line.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: Like we talked about their defensive line, their offensive line is awesome.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Like they truly have one of the best offensive lines in the Big 12, if not the country.
- 35:15SPEAKER_02: And uh your defensive line made them sweat.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: So it was a it was a really good performance from them.
- 35:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and he and he more or less held them up.
- 35:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, this is not a one-dimensional U of H team either.
- 35:25SPEAKER_04: Like they that they have a they have an incredibly veteraned and capable quarterback who is able to not only sling it, but he can burn you on his feet.
- 35:34SPEAKER_04: And he did that a few times to us.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: He had over 50 yards on the ground.
- 35:37SPEAKER_04: Um, and they have they have a great running back roster as well as they as well as some receiver dudes, and that connection between uh Wegman and their wide receiver one is nothing to to to scoff at.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Samar Thomas was awesome.
- 35:51SPEAKER_02: Overmeyer, their tight end was great.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: And dude, that throw that Wegman made to Kobe Young in the back of the end zone was that might be the best throw I've seen all season.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: It was unbelievable.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: Um, but that I mean that speaks to Texas Tech pulling out this win.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: That that's what I'm trying to say here is Houston to me, they're still ranked, and I'm glad they are.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: That team is going to end up way higher at the end of the year.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Like that team, that's a top 15 team, probably in the country.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: They're good as hell, man.
- 36:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 36:23SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: So they're they're doing well.
- 36:26SPEAKER_04: It we it it was it was truly two heavyweights going at it, man.
- 36:30SPEAKER_04: And in the whole bend don't break sort of situation, you you did not you had cracks.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 36:37SPEAKER_04: But you thank God that Dan did not spill over, especially wherever you really needed it to.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: And thankfully your offense helped you out enough to make sure that it wasn't an issue anyway.
- 36:46SPEAKER_04: So it's it was just an absolutely impressive look from our defense, kind of getting their feedback underneath them.
- 36:53SPEAKER_04: Um, and I I think Wood's figuring it out is he's starting to uh really put the pieces together, all these new pieces.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: He's building a whole new puzzle with a whole new tool.
- 37:02SPEAKER_04: So I think they're doing an outstanding job mixing in young players and using their new veteran talent as well.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: So it's just just good to see them finally meshing together.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Um the next point I'll make about the defense.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: So you miss a lot of players from last season.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: I think you miss a lot of them.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Like we had a lot of really good players that we wish were still on the team.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: You don't miss a player more than Jacob Rodriguez right now.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: You don't replace a Jacob Rodriguez.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: You don't.
- 37:29SPEAKER_02: And you're watching the linebacking core and you're like, okay, they're they're solid, right?
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: Like Roberts is doing okay.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: Curry made some big plays in this one.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: You know, Romaine was a part of that last tackle, uh, you know, him and him and uh him and Mateen.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: But Romaine also gave up the game, almost game tying touchdown.
- 37:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, just completely just whiffed.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: He just sucked at that point.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Um, you're just seeing them.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: There's so many ups and downs, and it seems like they're just a step too slow.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: And this game proved it.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, most of Wegman's completions he found the middle of the field, short little passes, dink and dunks, and it seemed like our linebackers were uh, you know, a second, two seconds too late on a lot of this stuff.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: And so I was I was a little disappointed seeing them, but they still do make their fair amount of good plays.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: I'm not trying to completely crap on them here, but um, you know, I do think Curry stepped up in this one, had a had a few big games.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: He was a part of that big goal line stop there, um you know, towards uh in the fourth quarter.
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: But and and you saw Wigman's rushing ability just kind of smoke you.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: So J-Rod from his coverage to him being able to punch that ball out, like you're not getting the same amount of turnovers that you had last year.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: And his leadership ability.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 38:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, everything about Jacob Rodriguez was insane, and so you know, losing that is it's tough to replace.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: And, you know, again, Joey talked about disruptors.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: I know he called out specifically John Curry.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: Um, but you need you need Austin Romain to be a disruptor, and he is not.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: Um, he's had a he's had a disappointing start to his Red Raider tenure.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and I hope he gets it together.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: But right now you're you're watching a guy not playing with a lot of confidence and not playing with a lot of you know hype up, and you kind of seem like the a guy who hasn't quite picked up the defense yet.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: And I hope that changes, but um, but you need more from that unit.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I agree.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: I mean it's it's definitely it's hard to go from years of outstanding linebacking play to starting to see a group who just is shaky, you know, that reliable isn't necessarily a word you'd use yet, and that's where you really want to add those linebackers.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: So I really hope Ben Roberts steps up to be a a big leader to really get these guys right.
- 39:56SPEAKER_04: But uh, but I actually, man, it's it's i i you you miss Jacob Rodriguez, but that's you can say that even if they were outstanding.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is what it is.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: Uh secondary stepped up, they had a much better game than the previous two.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: A big part of that is Brendan Jordan's back.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Um, and even he made a few mistakes this game.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, as those younger guys that we mentioned, like Peyton Morgan and Malika Scarra, get more of their feet under them, you know, they'll they'll start making a few more plays and start getting some better eyes out there.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Polak is Polak, he's great.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: Um Davin Martin, I thought, play pretty well in Amir Boyd's absence.
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: Um, I think when you get him back, hopefully you have a pretty good three-man rotation there at corner.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: Um but overall, I I liked your secondaries play this game.
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: You did enough to win.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, can still get better for sure.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, this entire defense is not going to be what last year's defense is.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: So it's just gonna be, you know, getting better, getting consistently better, understanding the defense a little better each and every game, and uh, you know, just growing.
- 40:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and uh good news, dude.
- 41:02SPEAKER_04: We don't even need to talk about special teams.
- 41:05SPEAKER_04: Not one kick.
- 41:06SPEAKER_04: Never need to.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: All tutes.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: Will Carroll, back-to-back Big 12 special teams player of the week, the punter for Texas Tech.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: Dude's awesome.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: He can see him, dude.
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: He's awesome.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: He's I love the punts that the receiver just has to go back like 20 yards because he wasn't expecting him to boom it that hard.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: And he, I mean, he's been great.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: And Stone's automatic, like it, it's it's uh great to have those guys in your back pocket um when you need them.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: But overall, man, really, really solid game.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: Really happy to watch.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, you would take any sort of win against this Houston ball club, and you did.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: Um, and you stepped up when you needed to most.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: And uh, game of inches.
- 41:51SPEAKER_02: Last thing I'll say.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: It's a game of inches.
- 41:55SPEAKER_04: Casuals will look at this game and go, oh, so this this is supposed to be the the big scary uh Big 12 team tech, and they only beat Houston by two points.
- 42:04SPEAKER_04: But those casuals would be very wrong.
- 42:07SPEAKER_04: This was a huge win, a gutsy win against a really good Houston team.
- 42:11SPEAKER_04: Who wanted to beat you, dude?
- 42:13SPEAKER_04: They we they probably had our game circled oh more than anybody else.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: Um, and we just stonewalled them, man.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: We said that, you know, sure, we're not last year's team, but we're gonna still find ways to play still find ways to win.
- 42:27SPEAKER_04: And dude, at the end of the day, that's all that matters.
- 42:30SPEAKER_04: As long as you find a way to win every single Saturday, who cares?
- 42:35SPEAKER_04: You know?
- 42:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and your heart speed a little faster, but yeah.
- 42:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, we're gonna lose a few years of our life uh this season versus last season where everything was uh pretty breezy and pretty fun.
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it does it also doesn't help that you know people don't like Cody Campbell and he went out and said we're gonna beat everybody by 40 in the offseason.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and uh it doesn't, you know, it doesn't help when you know these guys say these things.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: And uh, yeah, it is what it is.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: Guys are gonna say stuff, but uh, you know, I'm just happy to get a win.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: I'm happy to be 3-0.
- 43:08SPEAKER_04: Well, I understand, dude.
- 43:09SPEAKER_04: Do you want to in any notable Big 12 games of the week you wanted to talk about?
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: I was a big, big win for West Virginia.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: I think a lot of people are coming around on them and uh finally understanding the what they got the Oklahoma transfer.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: Uh that a lot of OU fans are are upset that they kept Mathir over this guy because he's had such a poor start to the year.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: But that's a big win for them, man.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: Going uh going and beating a ranked Virginia team.
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Rich Rod finally found a little some some.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: So maybe that game against West Virginia a little later on in the year for Texas Tech is uh one that you're really circling now, uh, and taking a look at it.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: But um, I mean, everybody, you know, BYU took care of business, Utah took care of business.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: Um K State.
- 43:55SPEAKER_02: K State, you know, they ended up after a poor start, they ended up coming back.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: Uh C.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Disaster, you know, Baylor's whatever.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: Colorado sucks.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: Colorado's bad, dude.
- 44:08SPEAKER_04: They suck.
- 44:09SPEAKER_04: They're being the worst team in the conference.
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: Or calling that to be the case.
- 44:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, is it shaving up to be that way?
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: Well, UCF's playing with another quarterback.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: Without their quarterback, they might be the worst team in the conference.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: Um, I'll give Iowa State credit, you know.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: Better better than what we and they haven't, you know, they played Iowa and they played it tight.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: Again, rivalry game, and then they played, you know, bad competition outside of that.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: So we'll see when they start playing some Big 12 teams.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: I'm not even going to take anything from Arizona State, Kansas, because it's a London game and it's stupid that teams are playing London games.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: But I, you know, what are you going to do?
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: These guys are flew seven hours, eight hours to go play a stupid football game.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: Play a conference game.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: I play a conference game in week three.
- 44:56SPEAKER_02: What I will say, you know, Oklahoma State, they got some going.
- 45:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, some it's it's clicking.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's starting to click for them.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, they're obviously riding high off of a big win against Oregon, but um, yeah, that's all you need, man.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: That Tulsa loss looks like it was five years ago.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: Dude, yeah, that Tulsa loss might have been a galvanizer.
- 45:17SPEAKER_04: Like truly.
- 45:18SPEAKER_04: It could be one of those things to look back on and be like, I cannot believe they lost to Tulsa because they just went and rattled off eight wins.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and again, they play Murray State, so let's not like you know, jump to conclusions, but a 59-nothing win is a 59-nothing win, and a win against Oregon is a win against Oregon.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: So um you have to take them very seriously.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: You have to take West Virginia very seriously.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: Um, Kansas State, you know, still a darn good team, still frisky.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: Uh Colin Klein, good offensive coordinator, turned head coach.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: Avery Johnson's still there.
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: They're you know, I'm pretty pretty happy you're not playing Kansas State in the regular season.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: Pretty happy you're not playing BYU or Utah.
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: So Utah looks excellent.
- 45:59SPEAKER_02: So yes, they do.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: Those Utah teams look really, really good.
- 46:02SPEAKER_02: It's uh it's fun.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: It's fun.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: Big 12.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: How about you?
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: BYU ranked in the top 10, Texas Tech right outside the top 10, Utah, I think, was 15.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, West Virginia getting some votes, they deserve to be in there, but of course they have to keep their 10th SEC in there uh for some stupid reason.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: AM is still ranked, and uh, you know, teams like Missouri are ranked, and all of this when they have no business.
- 46:27SPEAKER_04: But absolutely not, dude.
- 46:29SPEAKER_04: Absolute bull crap.
- 46:31SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I just just wanted to see if any of those uh interested you and uh in the stories.
- 46:35SPEAKER_04: But hey, Big 12 more or less a great business, and Colorado might be uh shaping up to be what a lot of people thought they were.
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: They are who we thought they were.
- 46:46SPEAKER_02: Very bad.
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: You don't lose you don't lose 41 to 7 to Northwestern.
- 46:51SPEAKER_02: You don't do that.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: No, that's bad.
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: In an unfinished in like a scaffold stadium where that was like a soccer field or something.
- 46:58SPEAKER_04: Like it's truly that is a bad look.
- 47:02SPEAKER_04: But um, all right, Steven.
- 47:05SPEAKER_04: This week, unless you have any other this week you are hosting the other Houston.
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: Some are saying better Houston.
- 47:19SPEAKER_02: Better Houston.
- 47:22SPEAKER_04: In the Sam Houston State Bearcats.
- 47:26SPEAKER_04: Um Steven, I have a I have a I have a uh a hot take.
- 47:30SPEAKER_04: Oh boy, I'm ready.
- 47:34SPEAKER_04: This is the one where the fans finally get their blowout.
- 47:39SPEAKER_02: I think we're finally was that a hot take?
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: That was not that was not a hot take.
- 47:43SPEAKER_04: I know it wasn't.
- 47:44SPEAKER_04: I was like, it's probably more of an ice cold take.
- 47:47SPEAKER_04: But no, but this team has not done it yet, dude.
- 47:52SPEAKER_04: We have not blown the doors off of a team yet.
- 47:56SPEAKER_04: I my I'm bank on this.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: Your backups will be in by the third quarter.
- 48:01SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: I liked uh I don't know, I forgot who tweeted it, but somebody just tweeted the statue of Sam Houston right outside of Huntsville, and they were just like, How are we gonna stop this guy?
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: This guy's huge.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: He's gonna be a problem.
- 48:20SPEAKER_02: There's uh Huntsville has one good thing going for him right now in Sam Houston State.
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: Well, they have a few.
- 48:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but Potato Shack.
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: If you've never been, you need to go.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: It's really good.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: Just a baked potato place that has awesome baked potatoes.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: It truly is awesome.
- 48:42SPEAKER_02: Is it that good?
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: It's pretty good, and it's an awesome idea.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: Like, you're just making all sorts of different baked potato dishes, and you're putting like some barbecue chicken in it.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: You're putting some like, you know, all sorts of bacon and like brisket and all this sort of great stuff.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: It's a great idea.
- 48:58SPEAKER_04: Do you get to like grab one of those before you head off to the executions?
- 49:01SPEAKER_04: Like watching something execution.
- 49:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: Before you go to one of the like six max security prisons over there.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: Um no, Huntsville's not great, but and you know who else isn't great?
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: Samusenstein.
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: They're one and two.
- 49:15SPEAKER_04: Um they're not good, dude.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: They've had a poor start to their uh their step up from FCS to FBS.
- 49:24SPEAKER_02: And uh yeah, it's been it's been a rough go for the Bearcats.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: So they're all their only win was one over this this week, Nickel State.
- 49:32SPEAKER_02: Hey, watch out.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: Nickel State.
- 49:36SPEAKER_02: We talked about them.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: This is the second Nichols State mission on this podcast this season.
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: We might we might be nickel state fans.
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: I might I might root for nickel state now.
- 49:47SPEAKER_02: No.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: Um so they lost to Tulsa, who beat Oklahoma State by a touchdown.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: Sam Heason State only lost by a touchdown.
- 49:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, they only lost by three to Troy, who played a pretty good game against Mizou this past year.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you look at that and you're like, okay, maybe they might be a little friskier than what you think.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: Like, this isn't a good team.
- 50:14SPEAKER_02: You should kill this team, but you know, maybe, maybe, maybe it's a little bit of a letdown week after a big win against Houston.
- 50:22SPEAKER_02: Is that is has that crossed your mind or are you way too high off of this win?
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: No.
- 50:28SPEAKER_04: I'm way too high.
- 50:29SPEAKER_04: I I I don't even think there's a even a remote scare.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: I don't think I think it's just more of do you finally I think this is good, this is the story of the game.
- 50:38SPEAKER_04: The story of this game is do your backups finally get reps?
- 50:43SPEAKER_04: Or do you have to unfortunately keep your starters in through the third quarter again?
- 50:47SPEAKER_04: Because that just is just the theme of the season where you just can't put them away to where you're comfortable enough to just start rolling out the the uh the backups.
- 50:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean you're just really hoping for a non-letdown game of just yeah, this is this is where you need to show a little more consistency here.
- 51:03SPEAKER_02: So you saw it against Houston, you saw what team you need to be, and you need to go on with that same mindset against the same Houston State team.
- 51:10SPEAKER_02: You can't go into this one just kind of being like, okay, let's just kind of roll in.
- 51:14SPEAKER_02: These guys suck, we're gonna beat them.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't expect them to do that.
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: I think I think if anything, they're gonna carry the momentum.
- 51:21SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, I'm looking at some of these stats.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: This quarterback already has almost a thousand yards on the season, nine touchdowns to one interception.
- 51:29SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we'll see.
- 51:31SPEAKER_02: Uh Alton McCaskill, their running back, he used to be at Houston.
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, I remember when he was at Houston and played us.
- 51:37SPEAKER_02: So you know, former power four talent um with some of these guys, but uh, you know, you can you can look at some stats from early on in the season.
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: I'm sure a lot of that came against the Nichols State game where they won like 50 to nothing.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, I I don't, you know, I don't have a ton to say about Sam Houston State.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're very good, and I think you should roll them um in your final non-conference game in the season.
- 52:06SPEAKER_04: I think Houston's a for a rough season, even in conference USA.
- 52:09SPEAKER_04: I mean like they dropped the game to Troy and Tulsa.
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: They're both respectable G G6 programs.
- 52:14SPEAKER_04: I'm not like sitting here saying they're they're both boo-boo, but I I I just there's no way TechStack gets scared by this team.
- 52:21SPEAKER_04: And it I might sound like the biggest dummy of all time, but it's just just just no way, dude.
- 52:26SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be a it's gonna be a beatdown.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: What I don't want to see is a repeat of ACU.
- 52:32SPEAKER_02: That's what I thought.
- 52:32SPEAKER_02: That's that's what I'm implying.
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: You know, like but I don't I don't have any worries about winning this game, but I want to win good.
- 52:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the ACU game was never in doubt.
- 52:44SPEAKER_04: We were just frustrated with the lack of why aren't you just annihilating this team right now?
- 52:49SPEAKER_04: I think that's where the frustration was.
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: And I I think you're gonna see what you wanted from the ACU game in this game.
- 52:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:58SPEAKER_02: It was uh I I agree.
- 53:00SPEAKER_02: I think it's gonna be a fun watch for Texas Tech fans.
- 53:05SPEAKER_02: This it must like a lot of the Houston game was a fun watch.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it you know made your butthole clench a little bit, but uh, but it was fun, and the algorithm was tremendous.
- 53:15SPEAKER_04: I think we're gonna have fun for the next couple games, let's be honest.
- 53:19SPEAKER_04: I think I think Sami State's gonna be a fun game, and I think at Boulder, Colorado will be a fun game as well.
- 53:27SPEAKER_02: I hope so.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: I really do.
- 53:29SPEAKER_02: Um, this game is at 11 a.m.
- 53:32SPEAKER_02: on the 26th.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: We're playing on a Saturday, isn't that weird?
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: That's weird.
- 53:37SPEAKER_02: That's weird.
- 53:38SPEAKER_02: I thought football games were played on Friday night.
- 53:41SPEAKER_02: Steven football.
- 53:43SPEAKER_04: Are you gonna watch this game on TNT or HBO Max?
- 53:47SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm not gonna be able to watch this game at all due to work, but I will replay it on probably Max.
- 53:54SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 53:55SPEAKER_02: Who's this guy?
- 53:56SPEAKER_02: Who's this guy?
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: You know, gotta work on the weekend sometimes.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: But um, no, I'm I'm excited and I hope the I hope the momentum continues to build and you're and you're getting a pretty easy and breezy dub uh over here against the the bear cats.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: Can't can I be selfish and say I'm actually kind of looking forward to the 11 a.m.
- 54:19SPEAKER_04: game?
- 54:20SPEAKER_02: You know, it is nice, especially when you're even when you're going to the game, but also when you're not going to the game, you have all day after.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, it's like you kind of wake up, take it easy in the morning, you know, maybe make yourself some breakfast, maybe run, you know, a couple errands, and then you sit down at 11 a.m.
- 54:37SPEAKER_02: and you watch yourself a football game.
- 54:39SPEAKER_04: And then you go do other things.
- 54:42SPEAKER_04: I disagree about the live thing.
- 54:44SPEAKER_04: No, if you're traveling from out of town, 11 a.m.
- 54:46SPEAKER_04: kind of stinks.
- 54:47SPEAKER_04: But um, but what if you're at home?
- 54:50SPEAKER_02: It gives you time to go enjoy, though.
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: After uh, you know, go enjoy a chimbos margarita after the game.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: I prefer a chimbos lead up rather than a post.
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: I get you.
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: I'm with you.
- 55:02SPEAKER_02: I'm I am more of a fan of a of an afternoon or a night game when I'm there.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: But uh, you know, I I find maybe call me positive.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: I like to find the goodness in things.
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: Except for Tommy Castellanos.
- 55:14SPEAKER_02: I can't find any good there.
- 55:15SPEAKER_04: It'll hopefully be nice and cool, but whenever you're at home, dude, you just you don't you don't have to wait all dang day to watch your team.
- 55:21unknown: Yeah.
- 55:22SPEAKER_04: So especially whenever you're good and you actually want to see the team, like we are.
- 55:25SPEAKER_04: If you're bad, I get it.
- 55:26SPEAKER_04: It's like uh I don't I don't want to watch at all, but it's just yeah, um, I'm ready to see us light up the team, and uh that way we can just kick back and tune into some other big 12 games later in the day.
- 55:37SPEAKER_04: Yep, should be a fun one.
- 55:40SPEAKER_02: Any anything else on Sam Muse Estate?
- 55:44SPEAKER_04: Uh uh Watch out for the bearcats.
- 55:47SPEAKER_02: Watch out.
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: Kind of a real animal, but not really.
- 55:51SPEAKER_02: It's not, though.
- 55:52SPEAKER_04: It's not a real animal-ish.
- 55:54SPEAKER_04: No, not really.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: I think one that like technically exists, but I don't think that's what they mean.
- 55:59SPEAKER_02: I th I thought a bear cat was like a weird badger.
- 56:03SPEAKER_02: Or like a yes, that's what the animal is that's what the real animal looks like.
- 56:07SPEAKER_02: It's defined as weird badger.
- 56:11SPEAKER_04: Binturong.
- 56:13SPEAKER_04: What?
- 56:14SPEAKER_04: A binturong, also known as a bear cat.
- 56:17SPEAKER_02: What does it look like?
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: It I know this is an audio medium for the people.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: It looks like a cracked out um um possum thing.
- 56:30SPEAKER_02: Shout out to the shout out to the cracked out Raider Red logo at Red Raider Outfitter.
- 56:36SPEAKER_02: That was a that's a crazy logo.
- 56:39SPEAKER_02: Skinny cracked out Raider Red.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: Um did you enjoy your time in Lubbock?
- 56:46SPEAKER_02: What were you what were your highlights of the weekend?
- 56:49SPEAKER_04: The game.
- 56:50SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 56:52SPEAKER_04: Eevee maze.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:55SPEAKER_04: The nicer weather.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: It's Evie Maze, by the way.
- 56:58SPEAKER_04: My bad.
- 56:59SPEAKER_04: You've always said evie maze.
- 57:00SPEAKER_04: The nicer weather than it is in South Texas, dude.
- 57:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:05SPEAKER_02: It was good.
- 57:06SPEAKER_02: It was a good weather weekend.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, we did the Lubbock experience, right?
- 57:10SPEAKER_02: You went to you went to Evie Mays, you went to Two Docs, you went to Chimbos.
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: Tailgated.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: I went to Triple J.
- 57:18SPEAKER_02: You did not join me for that affair, but it was fun.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: Um you know, we go through the same mistake every time we go to a Texas Tech night game that uh, you know, afterwards at the bars, we think we're gonna, you know, automatically just get in wherever, and the lines are ridiculous.
- 57:34SPEAKER_02: But the tailgate was awesome.
- 57:37SPEAKER_02: It was.
- 57:38SPEAKER_02: Um what else happened?
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech Museum.
- 57:43SPEAKER_02: That was fun.
- 57:44SPEAKER_02: It was fun.
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: It was a nice place, nice establishment.
- 57:47SPEAKER_04: Uh my child's never seen tech lose anything.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 57:52SPEAKER_04: Well, okay, essentially, but a football game.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: In person, well, she wasn't there, but she was in the vicinity.
- 58:01SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: So good, good news all around.
- 58:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, I you know, I don't want to jinx the next one.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: It's been a while since we've attended a football game that we've lost.
- 58:12SPEAKER_04: It's been a really long time, dude.
- 58:13SPEAKER_04: I can't remember the last time it was.
- 58:15SPEAKER_04: I think it was like right after college.
- 58:16SPEAKER_04: I think the last time I saw Tech Lose live uh was um uh in in in in Lubbock.
- 58:25SPEAKER_04: I think it was a Kansas State game.
- 58:27SPEAKER_02: Uh there was one game that I went to live that wasn't in Lubbock that I won't mention that was uh just an awful time.
- 58:36SPEAKER_02: Um I saw one of those two after Call of Duty.
- 58:39SPEAKER_02: 20, I want to say 2019.
- 58:41SPEAKER_02: No, maybe 2019 TCU?
- 58:45SPEAKER_02: That might have been the last time.
- 58:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:48SPEAKER_04: That I saw them lose live in Lubbock.
- 58:50SPEAKER_04: I don't think I've seen them lose live in Lubbock this decade.
- 58:54SPEAKER_04: Hey, maybe we're maybe we're the good luck charms.
- 58:57SPEAKER_04: Maybe we need season tickets to go every single week.
- 58:59SPEAKER_04: Maybe it's because the team's really good now.
- 59:01SPEAKER_04: It's one or the other.
- 59:03SPEAKER_04: It's it's probably us.
- 59:05SPEAKER_04: It's probably us.
- 59:05SPEAKER_04: It's probably us.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: It's probably it's probably not the financial commitment from boosters and fans and uh a coaching staff that gets it.
- 59:13SPEAKER_04: It's probably not any of that.
- 59:15SPEAKER_02: Well, we sure made a financial commitment this weekend.
- 59:17SPEAKER_02: Holy moly, every single time.
- 59:19SPEAKER_02: Shut you know, I know it's fun, it's worth it, it's very much worth it.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, buddy, song of the week, and then we get out of here.
- 59:28SPEAKER_02: What do you say?
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude.
- 59:30SPEAKER_02: Alright, what's your song of the week?
- 59:31SPEAKER_04: Steven, I'm going off the beaten path here.
- 59:33SPEAKER_04: Ooh.
- 59:34SPEAKER_04: I'm not going with a ruckus country song.
- 59:37SPEAKER_04: I'm not going with a rock song to throw us out here.
- 59:42SPEAKER_04: I am going with an old-timey American folk tune.
- 59:47SPEAKER_04: Okay, that is pretty famous, but it's it's one of those like wherever you hear it, you go, Whoa, that sounds like a time capsule song.
- 59:58SPEAKER_04: And wherever you open up this song, or you like it's like you're looking into old-timey Appalachia of pioneers singing this around a campfire.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_04: And it sounds like a prayer.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_04: And that song is Hard Times Come Again No More.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go with the cover by James Taylor featuring Yo-Yo Ma.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_04: That is how off the beaten path I am going here.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_04: Hard Times Come Again No More.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: Hard times and hard times come again no more.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_02: It's always fun when you go off the beaten path because you hardly ever do.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: You know, you're you're a country guy.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_02: You listen to country music.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: You know, you listen to country music and you have some great suggestions.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_02: It's obviously a great genre of music, but it's always fun when you bust something weird out.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_02: And this is pretty much a country song, but it's just it's about as weird as Tristan's gonna get, unless there's some stupid theme that we're doing for the song of the week.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_02: Um great choice.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_02: I listened to a lot of different music this weekend.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, obviously, the six-hour drive up and back will do that.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_02: Um, I was with not only you guys, but also some other buds that came up and joined, and they definitely listened to a much different type of music than what you guys listen to.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, there was some party anthems.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: Maybe we busted out the Irish folk songs there on Saturday night after you, after a few Miller lights.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_02: Um shout out to Toon who busted out Rooster by Alice and Chains at karaoke, the first song, which is crazy.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_02: It's a crazy choice in general.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_02: But for the first song after karaoke starts to do a six-minute Allison Chains song is nuts, but he killed it.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_02: He actually did.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_02: That's not my song of the week.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_02: Um, there's there's very few artists that paint a picture quite like Drew Kennedy.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_02: Um when you talk about a singer-songwriter that completely nails what a place is, it's Drew Kennedy talking about West Texas and beyond.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_02: And you know, there's been every every single time I've driven up to Lubbock and enjoyed my time.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, usually past junction, maybe 30, 45 minutes outside, up top, you're you know, you're going through winters, you're going through like all the Eden, you're going through all these small little towns.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_02: When the windmills start to hit, is when I turn on some uh some Drew Kennedy.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_02: And that's the sign.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's the sign.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: Once you see it and you see the flat land out there, and it's just you, like it's fun doing a solo trip because man, it's just like it's just you and enjoying yourself.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_02: And I I started the drive at a great time, but uh few artists really put you in a euphoric state, quite like Drew Kennedy, when you're driving out in West Texas.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: And uh my song of the week is Nerves by Drew Kennedy.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_02: It is uh it's everything you want in that experience, you know, putting yourself in it.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_02: And honestly, there was a moment where I had to stop.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_02: They were doing some construction on one of the one lanes, I think on 84, and you stop for a second, and you're just kind of like I rolled the windows down, and I'm just sitting there and I'm looking at the turbines go, and this song is playing, and I'm like, this is this is why I love this place.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: So that's uh that's my song of the week.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_02: Nerves, true Kennedy.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_04: Not only a song, but a story.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_04: Thank you there, Steven.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_04: And I did this podcast might be Drake Kennedy's biggest fan podcasts, because uh, we've recommended him about 10 times.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_04: And this is the second time we've recommended a song off that album, this his newest album.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_04: So great recommendation.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_04: I love that one.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_04: It's a very it really hits emotionally.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_04: So great one to ride out on here, dude.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_02: Fantastic weekend in Lubbock, Texas, with the friends and the family.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, we're gonna end it off like we always do.
