  Speaker 5: I didn't have anybody in the business that meanted me.

  Speaker 5: I didn't know anybody in show business. The only person

  Speaker 5: I knew was our senior Hall, and I didn't even

  Speaker 5: know how to contact him. So when I got into

  Speaker 5: this business, man, I knew nothing about the business. I

  Speaker 5: didn't know the questions to ask about the business. I literally,

  Speaker 5: and like I said on stage, I'm not bragging, I

  Speaker 5: literally had to figure it out because I didn't have

  Speaker 5: nobody say hey, man, how you book club dates? How

  Speaker 5: you do this? How you do that? I didn't have

  Speaker 5: that in the beginning. What taught me how to be

  Speaker 5: successful was my father's lessons of life and my mother's

  Speaker 5: teachings of Christ. That was what got me to be

  Speaker 5: able to hang in there, to keep the faith, to

  Speaker 5: never give up, and things like that. Now, as I

  Speaker 5: got into business, the person who taught me the most

  Speaker 5: about first of all, Joe Tory. Joe Tory came to

  Speaker 5: see me one night at the Punchline in Buckhead and

  Speaker 5: he said, man, I just had to come see you. Man.

  Speaker 4: He said, you that black dude that's making this money
• 3:39
  Speaker 4: in these clubs. Man.

  Speaker 5: I said, yeah, Man, thank you brother. He said, Man,

  Speaker 5: you ever played a black club? I said no, I

  Speaker 5: ain't got none. He said, Man, Mike Williams just opened

  Speaker 5: up one downtown Atlanta comedy act theater. He said, you

  Speaker 5: should come down there. So I went down there. The
• 3:55
  Speaker 5: next night. Joe came and picked me up and we
• 3:57
  Speaker 5: went down there to the club. That was my first time.

  Speaker 5: I'm sitting in an all black comedy club. And the

  Speaker 5: black people that went up on stage, Man, I was
• 4:05
  Speaker 5: hollering laughing. I was hollering laughing. Man mesmerized at the
• 4:09
  Speaker 5: subject matter that they could do because they was doing
• 4:12
  Speaker 5: stuff that was culturally funny. Now, me and Joe went
• 4:15
  Speaker 5: out to eat that night to the waffle house, and
• 4:18
  Speaker 5: I was telling Joe some story about boxing and my dad,
• 4:20
  Speaker 5: and Joe torys cracking up. He said, Man, I done
• 4:23
  Speaker 5: came out to that club two nights in a row. Man,
• 4:25
  Speaker 5: how come you'll never tell that on stage? I said, Man,
• 4:27
  Speaker 5: because they ain't gonna get it. He said, Man, f them.

  Speaker 5: He said, do it yourself. Man, do what's funny? He said, Man,

  Speaker 5: you funny as hell. Joe Tory made me change my
• 4:38
  Speaker 5: act to me to make myself more culturally who I am.

  Speaker 5: Then j Anthony Brown taught me how to do comedy, structuring, jokes,

  Speaker 5: stage presence, man, how to not care.

  Speaker 4: Then George Wallace taught me how not to care.

  Speaker 5: George used to come on stage and say, hey, man,

  Speaker 5: I know everybody out here asking y'all how y'all doing.

  Speaker 5: I don't give a blankety blank how the blank y'all doing.

  Speaker 5: Y'all paid to see me, And I went, kind dog,

  Speaker 5: you can say something like that. So then I started

  Speaker 5: getting that right there. But God's favor in my life

  Speaker 5: that I was able to get here in spite of

  Speaker 5: my lack of knowledge, in spite of my understanding, and

  Speaker 5: in spite of all that I went through. All the

  Speaker 5: failures I've had man, marriage, my life failures, man, mistakes

  Speaker 5: I've made in front of the world on camera though,

  Speaker 5: the cancelation of shows that I've had.

  Speaker 4: People laughed at me. Man, it's been crazy. Man.

  Speaker 5: I was being on some art one time at Beyonces

  Speaker 5: mother's event, and on stage the whole said, well, I

  Speaker 5: got out of the bed one of the pictures, one

  Speaker 5: of fifty thousand Mere Marji said that's too high for

  Speaker 5: that we stopped. Well, I guess you had to stop.

  Speaker 5: You didne lost little big shots in your talk show.

  Speaker 5: That's what the whole see in front of everybody. And

  Speaker 5: she laughed. She thought it was funny as hell. And

  Speaker 5: I set that. Through all of that, and in spite

  Speaker 5: of all that has happened to me, God's favor has

  Speaker 5: stayed on me.

  Speaker 4: And here I stand. I'm still standing.

  Speaker 5: got favor on me. Man, I'm favored. As a matter
