Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Drums, Discipline, And Death Metal: Ingested’s LYN JEFFS Talks Aussie Tours And Going Back To Their Roots
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Lynn, I'm the drummer in the UK band ingested.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Fantastic And what made you guys return to Australia so
- 0:07Speaker 2: soon after your twenty twenty three tour.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I mean, obviously, the first time we
- 0:12Speaker 3: went was in twenty twenty three. We'd planned originally to
- 0:15Speaker 3: go with Nile before COVID happened, and then obviously that
- 0:19Speaker 3: didn't come to fruition because of COVID, and we luckily
- 0:23Speaker 3: got the tour with Artspire and.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We enjoyed it so much. We always want to come
- 0:28Speaker 1: over and do a headliner and we thought this would
- 0:31Speaker 1: be this would be a good time.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Yeah, brilliant.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And how did Aussie crowds respond to your visit then
- 0:36Speaker 2: and what stuck with you the most from that experience?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Oh they're really good, really really good. But I mean
- 0:42Speaker 1: the people are amazing me.
- 0:43Speaker 3: I mean, I mean, we we're good friends with a
- 0:44Speaker 3: lot of Australian bands anyway, that's like crop tic and
- 0:46Speaker 3: just to melancholy, etcetera, etcetera. So you know, we get
- 0:49Speaker 3: on well with Australians that they're not too dissimilar to
- 0:52Speaker 3: British people, you know, in terms of the et so
- 0:55Speaker 3: We hit it off with everyone straight away. Really good response,
- 0:59Speaker 3: good people, good turnouts as well. The Arts by tour
- 1:01Speaker 3: was I think it was really I think might be
- 1:03Speaker 3: all sort of that actually the shows. Yeah, so it
- 1:06Speaker 3: was really good that a lot of people made it
- 1:09Speaker 3: pretty clear that they've waited quite a while for us
- 1:12Speaker 3: to come over, so you know, we felt very welcome.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I can't believe that that was like the
- 1:16Speaker 2: first time you guys had been me, I know.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Yeah, crazy.
- 1:21Speaker 2: And is there any Australian bens l artists that you've
- 1:23Speaker 2: discovered or connected with whilst touring down here.
- 1:26Speaker 4: You've just briefly mentioned that.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Well, like I said, I met Melancholi, are good friends
- 1:30Speaker 3: of ours. We took them out on our European tour
- 1:33Speaker 3: last year. Like I said this in terms Psychroptic we
- 1:36Speaker 3: told with were Wolves as well on the last tour.
- 1:41Speaker 3: What we didn't know about were Wolves. We know Dave
- 1:43Speaker 3: Hailey anyway from Psychroposis, but we didn't know that the
- 1:46Speaker 3: other guys were in Berserker and Sean's you know especially,
- 1:50Speaker 3: were huge influence on us when we were growing up.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah, so yeah, that was pretty cool.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Crazy and you guys are now performing as a fi piece.
- 2:00Speaker 2: How has that stually changed the dynamic both in riding
- 2:03Speaker 2: and on stage.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It's way better.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I mean, it's a it's always what we wanted to
- 2:08Speaker 3: achieve from I mean we started, we started off as
- 2:12Speaker 3: a five piece. Obviously, we lost a few members along
- 2:14Speaker 3: the way and we kind of stuck it out as
- 2:16Speaker 3: a three and had had just had live members but
- 2:20Speaker 3: for for a couple of years really, but we all
- 2:23Speaker 3: wanted to bring it back as a five piece. But
- 2:25Speaker 3: it was just it was just finding the right people,
- 2:28Speaker 3: having that right chemistry and getting the timing right a
- 2:32Speaker 3: bit of the of the launch really relaunching the band really.
- 2:38Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean in terms of like writing, it's
- 2:39Speaker 3: it's way more collaborative. We've got a second guitarist now,
- 2:44Speaker 3: you know, in Andrew, who's starting to write quite a lot.
- 2:48Speaker 3: So that's good for Sean, so he's got someone to
- 2:50Speaker 3: kind of like challenge his ideas a little bit. And
- 2:53Speaker 3: same with the same with Tom being in the band
- 2:54Speaker 3: as well playing bass. You know, we've not had a
- 2:56Speaker 3: basis for for quite a while, so it was it
- 2:59Speaker 3: was almost like an afterthought base, you know, where now
- 3:02Speaker 3: we've got someone who can interject a bit of you know,
- 3:05Speaker 3: a bit of his you know persona on the band
- 3:08Speaker 3: as well, so that that gives us another thing to
- 3:10Speaker 3: think about it really.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Do you think the sound has changed because of that
- 3:14Speaker 2: extra person in there as well?
- 3:18Speaker 1: So you broke up there?
- 3:19Speaker 2: Oh sorry, do you think your sound has changed as
- 3:21Speaker 2: well because of that extra.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Person or yeah? I mean, yeah, I think so.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I think I think it's it's a there's definitely even
- 3:28Speaker 3: in the new song, you know, there's there's a whole
- 3:30Speaker 3: section where it's based on its own you know, we've
- 3:31Speaker 3: not really done stuff like that before. So yeah, so
- 3:35Speaker 3: I think it will change. There will be a natural
- 3:37Speaker 3: change in terms of like how it evolves. But we're
- 3:40Speaker 3: definitely kind of geared now to kind of take it
- 3:43Speaker 3: a little bit back to our roots.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So we kind of with this talk coming up as.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Well, you know, we're going to bring a lot of
- 3:49Speaker 3: old songs back into the say, you know, we didn't
- 3:50Speaker 3: have that much chance to play too much old stuff
- 3:53Speaker 3: with the Art Spy at all, yes, simply because you know,
- 3:56Speaker 3: you only have like thirty minutes or thirty five minutes
- 3:58Speaker 3: whatever it was at that time, so you kind of
- 4:01Speaker 3: it's hard when you it gets harder with it when
- 4:03Speaker 3: you when your catalog grows and you know that the
- 4:05Speaker 3: history of the bank kind of gets bigger and bigger
- 4:08Speaker 3: to please everyone because you know, you want to some
- 4:11Speaker 3: people want to hear all new stuff, some people want
- 4:13Speaker 3: to hear old stuff. You know, there's stuff in the
- 4:14Speaker 3: middle that you like playing as well. So it's so
- 4:18Speaker 3: it's trying to find that balance. But where we headline
- 4:20Speaker 3: you can play an hour, you can as much as
- 4:22Speaker 3: you can kind of spread it across the entire catalog,
- 4:25Speaker 3: So we'll be focusing on some older.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Stuff as well, which I hope will please some people.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Oh yeah, for sure. That's weallyd And I was just
- 4:32Speaker 2: going to mention as well. Is there a particular track
- 4:34Speaker 2: in the set list that you're especially excited to play
- 4:36Speaker 2: here in Australia?
- 4:38Speaker 1: Are the new One also a flesh? I mean, I
- 4:39Speaker 1: mean we first showcased that on the last US tour.
- 4:45Speaker 3: And it went down so well and we really enjoy
- 4:48Speaker 3: playing it every every night, So I can't wait to
- 4:50Speaker 3: get I.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Don't wait to hear it live. That would be so amazing.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And can you tell us about any too routuals or
- 4:57Speaker 2: routines that you've developed to stay sharp and grounded well
- 5:00Speaker 2: on the road.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Well, I mean the only person whoally drinks anymore on
- 5:05Speaker 3: tour is Sean and even needs real drink that much anymore.
- 5:07Speaker 3: So I mean that's kind of a big change from
- 5:10Speaker 3: the old days really, where you know, we kind of
- 5:12Speaker 3: grew up watching the Pantera home videos and thought that's.
- 5:14Speaker 1: What you need to do every day.
- 5:17Speaker 3: And then eventually your age kind of catch ups, catch
- 5:20Speaker 3: up catches up with you, and you start to realize
- 5:23Speaker 3: that your body can't really handle.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I mean we, I mean we all try and stay
- 5:29Speaker 1: as fit as possible between tour and during during you know,
- 5:32Speaker 1: during the runs as well. We go to the gym.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say every day, but you know, as
- 5:37Speaker 3: much as we can, but with time commits me personally,
- 5:40Speaker 3: I like to do a bit of running, you know,
- 5:42Speaker 3: but in the mornings even like drumming like now, I
- 5:45Speaker 3: mean I never used to warm up for a long time.
- 5:48Speaker 1: He should just walk out on stage and you know,
- 5:50Speaker 1: and just play.
- 5:51Speaker 3: But you know, as you get older, you kind of
- 5:53Speaker 3: feel like your muscles start to feel a bit like
- 5:55Speaker 3: beef jerky under a lot more pressures. Even now, I
- 6:00Speaker 3: like fifteen twenty minutes of yoga before god on stage,
- 6:03Speaker 3: just to feel a little bit more loose.
- 6:04Speaker 1: But yeah, that's the age I think.
- 6:07Speaker 4: I know from I'm a drummer.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I'm not a very good one, but from watching some
- 6:12Speaker 2: of my favorite drummers and you guys as well. Being
- 6:15Speaker 2: in the genre that you're in, you play hard and fast.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Is it like a workout when you drum?
- 6:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty It definitely feels like that. As you
- 6:22Speaker 3: get older, it's more demanding, I think. I think like
- 6:27Speaker 3: when you when you go out and you play a show,
- 6:29Speaker 3: it's fine. I think when you put thirty shows nearly
- 6:31Speaker 3: back to back, you know, you start to fatigue a
- 6:34Speaker 3: little bit. Now, like towards it at the end of
- 6:35Speaker 3: the tour, it's all about preparation. It's like how much
- 6:38Speaker 3: preparation you put in leading up to the tour, during
- 6:40Speaker 3: the tour, and even after the.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Tours when you're kind of recovery process. So it definitely
- 6:45Speaker 1: becomes more of a challenge.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It is like a sport at the end of the day,
- 6:49Speaker 3: because it's it's not normal, you know, to play these
- 6:51Speaker 3: tempos that we play out it's fucking stupid. Really, yeah,
- 6:55Speaker 3: it really is daft, you know, and there's some people
- 6:57Speaker 3: who are just outrageously good at it and they have
- 7:00Speaker 3: natural talent, you know, and there's some people like myself,
- 7:03Speaker 3: I feel like I need to work pretty hard to
- 7:04Speaker 3: get to get to that level. As long as you
- 7:07Speaker 3: put the work in and you you're mindful of you know,
- 7:10Speaker 3: how you prepare, then you can execute it pretty well.
- 7:13Speaker 2: It's sensible that you take care of yourself afterwards as well.
- 7:16Speaker 4: I think that's the point. Yeah.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And what's a common misconception people have about Ingested or
- 7:24Speaker 2: the death mental genre in general, do you think.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I think the the obvious answer to that is that
- 7:31Speaker 3: we're all massive like horror freaks and stuff like that.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I mean, obviously there's a few people who are I mean,
- 7:36Speaker 3: Sean and a guitarist is it is massively into horror
- 7:38Speaker 3: films and you know, yeah kind of you know that
- 7:40Speaker 3: that that kind of industry in that genre.
- 7:43Speaker 1: But most people are pretty like into anything.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I mean myself and I didn't really have any interesting
- 7:49Speaker 3: like that kind of stuff that aligns with the band.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I just I just like the music.
- 7:52Speaker 3: It's the music that grew up listening and you kind
- 7:55Speaker 3: of stick with it, you know, and that's that. But
- 7:56Speaker 3: I mean I mean personally, I mean, my my dressed
- 8:00Speaker 3: to kind of really far removed from from from metal
- 8:04Speaker 3: kind of things, you know what I mean.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I like a lot of sports like cycling and football
- 8:08Speaker 1: that you know.
- 8:09Speaker 3: But there's lots of other people who you know, were
- 8:10Speaker 3: into the same stuff we're into, like lots of sports
- 8:12Speaker 3: and like, you know, different types of films and you know,
- 8:15Speaker 3: music and stuff. So yeah, I think misconceptions that everyone
- 8:18Speaker 3: thinks that we're just like you know, goths and greebows
- 8:21Speaker 3: and mushers, but we're not really, not all of us.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I mean, it's a lot more accepted these days as well.
- 8:27Speaker 3: When I remember being in school and I remember someone
- 8:32Speaker 3: asking me, like, you know, by major so you know,
- 8:34Speaker 3: I'm big into football, and they're like, how do you
- 8:36Speaker 3: be into football and metal? That doesn't that doesn't work.
- 8:39Speaker 3: And I was like, but why no, I don't really
- 8:41Speaker 3: understand that. But that has become more accepted these days
- 8:44Speaker 3: that people kind of just have different interests and you
- 8:46Speaker 3: don't have to wear black all the time and you
- 8:49Speaker 3: know whatever, but that's just the nature in the industry.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I think, Yeah, no, that's a good answer.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I find some bands I haven't heard of when I
- 8:58Speaker 2: got to interview them, and I see a quick video
- 9:00Speaker 2: of them and they look really intimidating, and I'm like,
- 9:03Speaker 2: oh my gosh, are they going to.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Be like really scary. But they're like the nicest people
- 9:06Speaker 4: you've ever talked to.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And it's like, yeah, you know, for your intense live energy,
- 9:11Speaker 2: how are you mentally and physically prepare to deliver that
- 9:14Speaker 2: night after night? You've kind of talked about that already too, Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I mean basically what I said.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Really, it's just it's just staying kind of mentally and
- 9:21Speaker 3: physically fit.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 9:24Speaker 3: It's not it doesn't always happen that way. You know,
- 9:26Speaker 3: some shows are tougher than others for many different reasons.
- 9:29Speaker 3: It could be with the weather, you know, if it's
- 9:31Speaker 3: really cold that day and you need to want your
- 9:33Speaker 3: muscles a little bit more. The crowd energy makes a
- 9:36Speaker 3: big difference, you know, I mean me personally, I mean,
- 9:40Speaker 3: it's nice to play like big shows when you end
- 9:41Speaker 3: up playing like you know, I mean, we did a
- 9:43Speaker 3: tour with Lawn and Show a couple years ago, and
- 9:44Speaker 3: there's lots of readers and stuff on that all which
- 9:46Speaker 3: was you know, so.
- 9:47Speaker 1: It's great memories.
- 9:48Speaker 3: But my favorite shows are the intimate ones where it's
- 9:50Speaker 3: like three four hundred people, there's no barrier, you know,
- 9:54Speaker 3: they're they're the most fun of shows. It's just hot
- 9:56Speaker 3: and sweaty and like then you don't really care about
- 9:59Speaker 3: like the little mistakes that you might make during the set.
- 10:02Speaker 1: You just enjoy. You just enjoy it for all it is.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know that the people are there just
- 10:07Speaker 2: purely enjoying what you guys are putting out exactly.
- 10:10Speaker 3: You know, you feel less like you're in a in
- 10:12Speaker 3: a goldfish bowl, like in a shot window almost.
- 10:16Speaker 1: You know, people, you can just lose yourself in the moment.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Man.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And is there a particular song in your discography that
- 10:25Speaker 2: you feel best represents Ingested as a band.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It's a difficult one. There's so many of these days.
- 10:37Speaker 1: That's too difficult.
- 10:41Speaker 3: The era of the Bond because kind of, you know,
- 10:44Speaker 3: each album kind of tells its own story of that
- 10:47Speaker 3: time of you know, our age and you know, and
- 10:50Speaker 3: what what were our influences were.
- 10:52Speaker 1: At that time, et cetera. You know.
- 10:54Speaker 3: So, yeah, that's that's too hard to pick it up.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Put it on one song, We'll say the new one again. Yeah, Yeah,
- 11:01Speaker 3: this is a new age of the band. So yeah,
- 11:03Speaker 3: we'll say why not.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And are there any new bands that you're impressed by
- 11:08Speaker 2: at the moment or maybe one that would be a
- 11:10Speaker 2: surprise given the type of music you make.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Well, like I said before, Melancholia, Great Young, bat Up
- 11:17Speaker 3: and coming back from Australia. I really like those guys
- 11:20Speaker 3: a lot in terms of like other styles.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, do you mean a metal or
- 11:27Speaker 1: do you mean other genres as well?
- 11:29Speaker 2: If you yeah, maybe if you do like anything from
- 11:31Speaker 2: other genres, Yeah, I.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Mean I'm big into Turnstile at the moment, and then
- 11:35Speaker 3: they're just releasing that they're starting a new album cycle. Yeah,
- 11:39Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not massively into hardcore. I'm not really
- 11:43Speaker 3: massively into genres in general. I just kind of like
- 11:46Speaker 3: a certain bands. You know, it's I can't say I'm
- 11:48Speaker 3: into synth waivers a genre, but I like Gunship the Midnight. Yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 3: so I kind of more pinpoint into like certain bands.
- 11:56Speaker 3: If I like that album or like, you know, that
- 11:58Speaker 3: specific song, then you know, un them into it.
- 12:01Speaker 1: That's ectent. Yeah, this genre doesn't really matter to me.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, No saying here and what's the weirdest
- 12:08Speaker 2: or most unexpected thing that's ever happened to you on tour?
- 12:17Speaker 1: My god, I'm trying to cycle through like twenty years.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Sorry, I know these questions are very broad.
- 12:24Speaker 3: It is the most unexpected I'll tell you, actually, I
- 12:28Speaker 3: will tell this story.
- 12:29Speaker 4: We we.
- 12:29Speaker 3: It was the first tour after after COVID yep, because
- 12:32Speaker 3: obviously we everyone had been like locked up in the
- 12:35Speaker 3: houses for the best part of you really, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 3: we could leave the country, can play shows.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Did you know?
- 12:39Speaker 3: We did a live stream during that time as well,
- 12:41Speaker 3: which kind have only way of promoting the Worthy Gods
- 12:44Speaker 3: May Tread album.
- 12:46Speaker 1: So we're desperate to get back on tour. We we.
- 12:48Speaker 3: We went on tour with an autopsy in the US.
- 12:53Speaker 1: That was our first tour back. I think it was
- 12:54Speaker 1: January twenty twenty two or twenty one if I remember
- 12:59Speaker 1: twenty one.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Thing.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Yeah, anyway, we get up for this talk for a
- 13:03Speaker 3: long time. We flew to New York, picked up our vehicle.
- 13:06Speaker 3: We had to drive about eight hours to Columbus, Ohio
- 13:09Speaker 3: for the first show, pick up our merch et cetera.
- 13:12Speaker 3: We get about four hours onto the road in Pennsylvania
- 13:14Speaker 3: and the wheel explodes off the van.
- 13:17Speaker 1: My god, I don't mean like the tire, I mean
- 13:20Speaker 1: the wheel, yeah, flying everywhere. We were like fucking petrified.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Anyway, our drive did a really good job and pulled
- 13:29Speaker 3: over and ended up being stuck on the side of
- 13:31Speaker 3: the road for six hours, like freezing in January and
- 13:35Speaker 3: in the middle of America. We nearly missed the first show.
- 13:39Speaker 3: We were like, we literally turned up about fifteen minutes
- 13:42Speaker 3: before we got on stage, had set up my drums,
- 13:44Speaker 3: like outside it was freezing.
- 13:46Speaker 1: God. We've been waiting to go on tour for like
- 13:49Speaker 1: for about a year and this is the fucking first show.
- 13:53Speaker 1: So that was a good start. But anyway, the rest
- 13:55Speaker 1: of the tour was good.
- 13:56Speaker 4: It's lucky that you made it. That's crazy.
- 13:59Speaker 1: It was meantal just like, honestly, only only this could
- 14:02Speaker 1: happen to us.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Of course, yeah things, oh gosh.
- 14:07Speaker 2: And if you could collaborate with any artist outside the
- 14:10Speaker 2: metal world, who would it be And what do you
- 14:12Speaker 2: imagine that crossover would sound like?
- 14:16Speaker 1: That's a good question.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Mm hm for me at the moment, I would say
- 14:22Speaker 3: someone like Gunship, yes, because I think that would fall
- 14:26Speaker 3: into kind of like the horror kind kind of theme
- 14:29Speaker 3: as well. If you if you can take that kind
- 14:31Speaker 3: of like music and the Darker group kind of like
- 14:34Speaker 3: the name of the artists, but as an artist that
- 14:36Speaker 3: did a soundtrack for the film it follows and it's
- 14:41Speaker 3: like really kind of like synth wavy, really like kind
- 14:43Speaker 3: of eighties kind of Yeah, sounded and I always kind
- 14:47Speaker 3: of like thought like maybe if you could introduce that
- 14:49Speaker 3: into some death mouton in some way that you could
- 14:52Speaker 3: have quite quite interesting.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Do you think your drums would be like an electronic
- 14:57Speaker 2: kit then.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Or no, have to blend it somehow? Yeah?
- 15:02Speaker 4: Interesting, that sounds cool.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Must be past bit intense with like the Edim kicks
- 15:08Speaker 1: and stuff.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, we could. That's a really good idea.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Hopefully one day it comes to fruition maybe. And what
