- 0:07The California Angels faced the Baltimore Orioles at Memorial Stadium for game one of a Twilight Doubleheader on Thursday, May 6th, 1971.
- 0:15The Angels were looking to advance their success after finishing the 1970s season with a franchise-high 86 wins under the leadership of Lefty Phillips and his first full season as manager.
- 0:26The Orioles were the defending World Series champs. Earl Weaver took over from Hank Bauer as the O's manager in the middle of 1968 and quickly escalated Baltimore to consecutive 100-plus win seasons and back-to-back appearances in the fall classic.
- 0:40This audio recording of game one of the Doubleheader is from the Baltimore Radio broadcast featuring announcers Chuck Thompson and Bill O'Donnell.
- 0:47Good evening everybody and welcome to Baltimore Oriole Baseball. This is Chuck Thompson along with Bill O'Donnell at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore where tonight the Orioles and the California Angels will attempt a finite doubleheader.
- 1:00Weather conditions in and around the Baltimore area are still threatening and the forecast is four showers with a possibility of course among those showers a thunderstorm.
- 1:10It is a little overcast as we look out to the north from our broadcasting vantage point here in the stadium and the wind that was in the west this afternoon has flung around now and it's coming straight down out of the north and it could bring a few showers.
- 1:24However, perhaps they will be of a, you know, a very short duration and we will be able to get both our games in. At least that is the hope.
- 1:32Tonight in game number one the Angels are starting their fine young right-hander Andy Measuresmith and the Orioles will counter with their outstanding left-hander Dave McNally.
- 1:42Now for those of you who are going to score the game with us tonight here are the batting orders in game number one.
- 1:48Leading off for the California Angels at second base Sandy Alomar.
- 1:53Batting number two the first baseman Jim Spencer.
- 1:57Batting number three hitter left fielder Alex Johnson. Batting five or batting four will be right fielder Tony Cinnigliaro.
- 2:06The number five hitter shortstop Jim Fragolpi.
- 2:11Number six hitter third baseman Ken McMullen.
- 2:14Standing back chanting and batting number seven will be Jerry Moses. The number eight hitter is Ken Berry the center fielder and the pitcher will be Andy Measuresmith.
- 2:24Now the Oriole lineup in game number one tonight is a little bit unusual. It's the first time we have seen this lineup this year.
- 2:30It will start with right fielder Tommy Chalpey. Chalpey leads off place right fielder.
- 2:36Batting two the left fielder Don Dupre. Batting three the first baseman Brooke Cowell.
- 2:41Batting four third baseman Brooks Robinson. Batting five center fielder Merv Rettenmann.
- 2:48Batting six second baseman Dave Johnson.
- 2:53Batting seven the shortstop Tito Simone.
- 2:58Batting eight and catching game one Andy Esterbaran and the pitcher will be Dave McNally.
- 3:06And before we continue with a little bit more information on Measuresmith and McNally let's pause briefly now for station identification.
- 3:14For the visiting California Angels here in game one tonight it will be Andy Measuresmith.
- 3:18It is our understanding that Leslie Phillips is going to pick Jim Maloney in the nightcap tonight.
- 3:23And manager Earl Weaver will come back with Pat Dobbs when he started last night's ballgame against California that was rained out at the end of an inning.
- 3:31Measuresmith on the year has won two and lost two. And against the Orioles has no record this season.
- 3:38His lifetime against Baltimore shows three wins and three defeats.
- 3:42A year ago against the Orioles Measuresmith was able to win one ballgame in relief and was defeated twice.
- 3:49And both of his losses to Baltimore a year ago his teammates were getting not a single run.
- 3:54As Crayard beating two to nothing May the 29th and seven to nothing on the 11th of August.
- 4:00Dave McNally who has won four and lost the ballgame is making tonight his sixth start of the season.
- 4:08And his first of the year against the Angels. He has no career record against California except that.
- 4:14Dave McNally had a four game winning streak extended by Kansas City last Saturday.
- 4:19Five to two he was four innings allowed five hits and three runs.
- 4:23His wins have been against the Senators, against Detroit, against California and against Oakland.
- 4:28He beat Clyde Wright eight to two April the 23rd.
- 4:31Which gives him a career mark of ten victories and eight defeats against the Angels. And this for Dave will be his seventh start of the year.
- 4:40And now with pride ladies and gentlemen our national anthem.
- 5:11Who would like to stand by?
- 5:19For the land of the free and the home of the brave?
- 5:29As long as heaven and water see in them, They will move to the night when our eyes are still clear.
- 5:47For the land of the free and the home of the brave?
- 6:15We'll be back with a start of tonight's first game after this message.
- 6:19Well Sandy Alomar stands in to lead off for the California Angels and again a brief review on Dave McNally's record.
- 6:25Intervertingly we were reading to you the information available on Pat Dodson.
- 6:29McNally four and one on the year had a four game winning streak ended at Kansas City at last start Saturday five to two.
- 6:36Dave wins this year against the Senators, the Tigers, California and Oakland.
- 6:41He beat Clyde Wright eight to two in the 23rd and this is the seventh start of the year for Dave McNally.
- 6:47Here is Sandy Alomar right hander against left handed Dave McNally.
- 6:50A swing and a ground ball towards second base from Johnson.
- 6:52He makes the pick up off the right foot and in one fifth Alomar has been retired and a ground ball to the second base from Dave Johnson.
- 7:00Sandy is in 196th on the year.
- 7:03And now the Maryland born Jim Spencer.
- 7:06And this will be his third trip to the plate in the first inning of a ball game here in Baltimore.
- 7:11The first time he came on Tuesday night on the first inning he homered.
- 7:14Last night he came up on the first inning and homered again and the rain wiped it out and here he is once more.
- 7:20McNally's breaking ball is over the outside corner of the leaves and the strike is called.
- 7:24Spencer is hitting 198 and has gone one for four in the only game these two clubs have been able to play here at Baltimore.
- 7:32McNally brings the on down the breaking pick missed out five this time and the count evens with one ball and one strike.
- 7:38Spencer is hitting 198.
- 7:40He has three doubles, five home runs and nine runs batted in.
- 7:44Marty Springstead is the umpire of the plate tonight with Jim Honest at first, Larry McCoy at second and Jim Odom at third base.
- 7:51Fist offering down low and away to left hand swinging Jim Spencer and the count now has two balls and one strike.
- 7:57The on deck hitter for the California Angels, the American League batting champion of the year ago, Alex Johnson.
- 8:04McNally ready to go, down comes the 2-1 to Spencer.
- 8:07A foul ball is out of play behind the plate.
- 8:09Two and two is the count.
- 8:11Around the Oriole infield tonight Brooks is at third but Chico Simone is playing shortstop in the first game.
- 8:17Dave Johnson cut well around to the first base side as the Oriole second baseman.
- 8:21Boog is at first base and right field tonight, Tommy Sopate is at second base.
- 8:26In center field Merv Rettman in left field, Don Buford.
- 8:31The putt is cut out on the ground foul as outside of first so the count continues to two balls, two strikes to Jim Spencer.
- 8:41Game two tonight, which we hope if the weather permits will follow our first game, will feature Maloney for the Angels and Pat Dodson for the Orioles.
- 8:52McNally ready to work with a 2-2 pick for left hand hitting Jim Spencer.
- 8:55Foul ball is hit up toward the upper deck and out of play.
- 9:01Andy Etchevain is doing the catching here in our first game tonight.
- 9:07Maybe after the rain we had last evening and certainly we needed it here in our part of the country.
- 9:12And I know down in South Florida you needed a 2-2 pick for Spencer.
- 9:16McNally turns and fly ball, well hit foul down the right field side.
- 9:19It's going to be out of play in the upper deck.
- 9:22So Spencer continues to hang tough with a count, two balls and two strikes.
- 9:26Could be that perhaps the downfall of the down pour that we had last night,
- 9:30looks a little bit of rain during the day here, will be the extent of it.
- 9:34And we might be able to get our scheduled double header in.
- 9:37Two balls and two strikes to the batter Jim Spencer.
- 9:40McNally rocks and throws, he missed again.
- 9:42Low and outside to fill the count three and two.
- 9:45Full count to Spencer with Alex Johnson in the on deck circle, one away top of the first inning.
- 9:53Game just under way in Baltimore tonight.
- 9:55And the payoff hit coming down to Spencer.
- 9:57Deep in the box, straight away down.
- 9:59High fly foul, first base side.
- 10:01If two, it's going to be out of play.
- 10:03Well McNally made his first start on the 7th of April.
- 10:07He beat the Senators and Caissie Cots 3-2.
- 10:10Going back in the second game as a double header on the 11th of April against the Tigers and beat Mike Philkenny 9-3.
- 10:17Came away with no decision against the Yankees next time out.
- 10:20Here's a looping pop up outside third base.
- 10:22Racing and fouls round Brooks Robinson, he's there.
- 10:25And Brooks squeezes a little bit of a pop up and fouls round off the batter Spencer and we have two down.
- 10:32And now Alex Johnson.
- 10:33Alex is hitting 278 at this early date of the year.
- 10:38And in the Orioles series, he is 0-5.
- 10:41But make no mistake, the base hits will be coming for this outstanding hitter Johnson.
- 10:48Right handed batter is Alex and here's McNally's first outing.
- 10:51Same stuff, it was high and away, ball one.
- 10:54Following an old decision outing against the Yankees at 17th of April,
- 10:57Rays came back out in California in the 23rd and beat Peter Wright 8-2.
- 11:02Curve ball is in and the strike is fouled to Alex Johnson.
- 11:06One ball and one strike.
- 11:07Then the 27th of April in Oakland, he defeated Diego Cigu 62.
- 11:12And he took his first defeat spatterly against Kansas City losing to Bunker 5-2.
- 11:17The pitch, ground ball hits toward second baseman Johnson.
- 11:20In the glove, the throw on the pile is a 1-2-3 inning for McNally and the Orioles.
- 11:24At the end of the first half inning of play, it's California nothing and of course the Orioles coming to bat.
- 11:29Well, a quick check of the scoreboard.
- 11:31It's not particularly good news.
- 11:33We sit down here in Baltimore tonight and I'll tell you the reason why.
- 11:36The Cubs and the New York Mets were scheduled to play in New York this afternoon, postponed because of rain.
- 11:42The Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies were due to go in Philadelphia 80 miles to the north of this rain.
- 11:48They're not going to be able to play.
- 11:49Houston will be at Monterey All-Saint Natty at Los Angeles tonight.
- 11:52And in the American League, the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox today 10-1.
- 11:59Gary Peters the winner and Johnson is the loser.
- 12:02Tonight New York will be in Minnesota.
- 12:07Here is Tommy Silpe standing in against the right-handed Andy Messersmith.
- 12:12And this is Tommy's first start of the year for the Orioles, he's hitting 167 left-handed batman.
- 12:18Right-hander called as Messersmith, pump it right through.
- 12:22Out in California in the big A, they call this fine young right-handed pitcher the Baron.
- 12:28And this is the result of a right-hand contest to pick a nickname for Andy Messersmith.
- 12:32The breaking pitch, Miss Hyde outside, Silpe gave indication of the bump.
- 12:36Shortened up in the grip, ran up in the pitch and he was high and away.
- 12:38One ball, one strike, Tommy.
- 12:41Silpe, Bucer and Powell on the three batters and the bottom of the first.
- 12:44Right up on the infield grass, the third is McMullen.
- 12:47Here is Messersmith to the move, the one offering to Silpe inside and low and he's counting out two balls and a strike.
- 12:59Center fielder, Ken Barry is just about straight away to Silpe, maybe a little bit to the right.
- 13:03The two-one pitch to Tommy, line drive they pitch to right field.
- 13:06Silpe rips a line drive single and in the right field to get the bird started in their half of the first inning.
- 13:12And now the play will come down to Yuford.
- 13:14Yuford hitting a very fine 3-11 over the year and in the only game played here in Baltimore against California, had two hits and four trips.
- 13:25And California will play Yuford just about the way they played Silpe a moment ago.
- 13:30Alex Johnson is giving Yuford a little bit more of a foul line down the left field side than he showed Silpe a moment ago.
- 13:36McMullen still on the grass at first.
- 13:38Spencer holding with a baseman at Silpe at first and Messersmith ready to deal to Don Yuford.
- 13:43Quick throw to first, Silpe is back at first.
- 13:54Another quick throw to first base again, Silpe is back.
- 13:57Double play combo of Jim Fragoti and Sandy Alomar off the top of the steps against the left-handed Queens of Don Yuford.
- 14:05Messersmith kicks and fires.
- 14:07He's got the fastball over the outside portion of the letter.
- 14:09Strike is called to Don Yuford.
- 14:13Right fielder Tony Kniegley-Arrow gives Yuford a good little bit of a foul line down in right field.
- 14:22One strike to count to Yuford.
- 14:23Silpe is the runner at first.
- 14:25No score in the bottom of the first inning.
- 14:26Messersmith rolls ground ball, base hit into right field.
- 14:29Silpe going hard.
- 14:30It's around second.
- 14:31He will make third as Yuford and Silpe have greeted Messersmith with base hits to right field.
- 14:37And the Orioles have runners at first and third.
- 14:40Nobody out.
- 14:42And it comes Brueg Powell.
- 14:43Brueg's average is 225, but he is right up there among the leaders in home runs and RBI in the American League.
- 14:51Cullibrew leads with 23 runs batted in.
- 14:53And Oliva has seven home runs to stop the American League.
- 14:56Powell has 22 runs batted in and six home runs.
- 15:03So the Orioles have Silpe at third, Yuford at first, nobody out.
- 15:07Powell at the plate.
- 15:08Messersmith's pitch is cut on and Powell by the screen.
- 15:11Actually came through the screen on the lead.
- 15:15He must have hit a team and just flipped through.
- 15:18One strike to count to Brueg Powell.
- 15:21One for two in two tonight's game against the Angels.
- 15:25We played one inning last night and then we're rained out.
- 15:28So one strike offering to Powell.
- 15:30Andy Throes, he drives him off the plate with a pitch low and inside.
- 15:33One ball and one strike.
- 15:38Well, I'm sure you know that Vida Blue pitched another shutout last night against the Detroit Tigers.
- 15:43And to the best of our knowledge, this outstanding young left-hander will pitch here in Baltimore Sunday afternoon against our Orioles.
- 15:50One-one to Powell.
- 15:51Low inside.
- 15:52Ball two.
- 15:53Two and one now.
- 15:56Two balls and a strike.
- 15:58The count to Powell, nobody out.
- 16:00Jolte opens with a single to right field.
- 16:02Yuford followed with a single to right field.
- 16:04Jolte took third.
- 16:06And now the 2-1 pitch to Brueg Powell.
- 16:09Just a little bit lower than the breaking ball and the count now is three balls and one strike.
- 16:17Brueg snaps a quick look down third base way to coach Billy Hudders.
- 16:21George Stoller is coaching first base against the Orioles.
- 16:25And let's see what messages this has to offer on the 3-1.
- 16:28Time is called briefly.
- 16:29Powell back out.
- 16:30And just as quickly he's back in again.
- 16:32So Andy takes a little bit of a stroll up on the mound.
- 16:35And relax.
- 16:36He's got a tough pitch to make to Brueg Powell right now.
- 16:39Here's his 3-1.
- 16:41Ground ball, smared on the half-hop of the first base and thrown down to second for one.
- 16:44Back to first.
- 16:45And it is fumbled by Spencer at first base and Powell reaches.
- 16:51Powell hit a scorching line drive right at the feet of Spencer.
- 16:54He's fighting on the half-hop.
- 16:55A great grab by the California first baseman.
- 16:58Ripped to throw to second base and that's up the fourth on Buford.
- 17:01The return throw to first base was in time, but Spencer could not come up with it.
- 17:08And Powell reaches.
- 17:09So Brueg is given a run batted in during Chaupe and reaches on the fourth for Buford.
- 17:15And the Orioles have a 1-0 lead over California.
- 17:21What a smash and a beautiful glove hand stop by Jim Spencer to take what might have been an extra base hit away from Buford.
- 17:28The pitch to Brooks.
- 17:29Lone away.
- 17:30Ball one.
- 17:31Brooks looking for a base hit against the Angels.
- 17:33Went 0 for 3.
- 17:34Tuesday night he was hitting 2.
- 17:3527.
- 17:39Now the 1-0 to Brooks.
- 17:40Breaking pitch and it catches a corner right around the knee.
- 17:43So the count is now one ball and one strike.
- 17:45Brooks offered and stopped the swing.
- 17:50One out, one run in.
- 17:52Powell at first and the pitch is low and outside to Brooks Robbins.
- 17:56He makes a count now of two balls and one strike behind Brooks.
- 17:59The on back hitter now is Merv Retenmond.
- 18:07Messersmith gets the sign flashed by Jerry Moses.
- 18:10Goes to first base to the throw but Powell is on the bag.
- 18:18And he's ready with a 2-1 offering to Brooks.
- 18:20He's outside with a swing.
- 18:21Three balls and a strike.
- 18:34And Messersmith ready to go with a 3-1 pitch to Brooks Robinson.
- 18:37Here it is.
- 18:38Low and outside.
- 18:39A walk to Brooks then Powell to second base and brings Merv Retenmond to the plate.
- 18:44One out, a run in.
- 18:47Powell the runner at second.
- 18:48Brooks is first.
- 18:49And here now Merv Retenmond.
- 18:50He's hitting 2-5-0 on the year.
- 18:55Retenmond, like many of the ball players, delights in poking fun at himself.
- 19:00And he has a very keen sense of humor.
- 19:02He mentioned his sense of humor in a brief address that he advertised in front of Baltimore today.
- 19:08Messersmith's pitch.
- 19:09Curve.
- 19:10A pitch bowled down the first base side.
- 19:12Out of play.
- 19:14Merv said, when I had last year, when I was hitting 3-22, he said I had a rather keen sense of humor.
- 19:20He said, but this season with that 2-50 batting average, you can run not quite as humorous as I was a year ago.
- 19:27Said Merv Retenmond.
- 19:29So one strike pitch to Merv.
- 19:31Messersmith looked out each time inside with a swing fastball.
- 19:34He was kind of sailing up and in on Merv.
- 19:36He leaned out of the way.
- 19:37One ball, one strike.
- 19:39The birds have had seven of their players hit by the pitch over the last week.
- 19:47That does not mean to indict, it is not said to indict any of the opposition's pitches in any way, manner, shape, or form.
- 19:53The one run offering now to Retenmond.
- 19:55Just missed with a curveball.
- 19:56Two and one.
- 19:59Ball for us, for the truth of the matter, has not been hitting as they are capable of hitting.
- 20:03Some of the hitters just may be a little bit over-anxious.
- 20:08Won't get in.
- 20:09Two-one pitch to Retenmond.
- 20:10Good curve from Messersmith and the strike is called.
- 20:13Two balls, two strikes now to Merv.
- 20:16Howell, the runner at second base, Brooks, the runner at first.
- 20:19One out of many.
- 20:20The Orioles are leading one to nothing.
- 20:27Messersmith ready to go.
- 20:28The 2-2 to Merv Retenmond.
- 20:30Struck him out.
- 20:31A swing and a miss on a good curveball.
- 20:33Retenmond was trying to stop that swing.
- 20:36Breaking pitch might have been a slider.
- 20:38And Retenmond is strike down number one in the ball game for Messersmith.
- 20:42Is 32nd on the year for Andy.
- 20:45The second out of the inning and now Dave Johnson.
- 20:48Well, Dave is moving around on that batting order again.
- 20:51He's been just about everywhere but number four.
- 20:55And of course he is hitting a very fine 333 and it's gone one to four in two semis game against California.
- 21:03Howell second, Brooks first, two down now.
- 21:06And Messersmith ready to work today.
- 21:08Johnson, 16 throws.
- 21:11Right down the pipe and it's right at call today.
- 21:25Now the one strike offering to the right hand playing Johnson.
- 21:27Ground ball hit toward the shortstop for Gosee.
- 21:29He waits to pick up the short throw to second gets the fourth on Brooks for the final out of the inning.
- 21:34But the Orioles pick off a run on a pair of day picks and leave a couple of runners.
- 21:38And at the end of the inning the play of the story is Baltimore 1, California nothing.
- 21:43Well, we're looking forward to our doubleheader tonight and also to the coming weekend series against the Oakland A's.
- 21:49And it's naturally all of us looking forward to Mother's Day, which is Sunday.
- 21:53And the Longwood Mother's Day, the Orioles and the Oakland A's are going to celebrate a fat day here at the stadium,
- 21:59which means that all youngsters 14 and under accompanied by a paying adult on the afternoon will receive an official Little League baseball bat as great souvenirs.
- 22:09Here is Tony Canigliaro against the South Fawdade McNally.
- 22:12Tony is hitting 247 and a ball is blown inside of Canigliaro.
- 22:17Tony went once before. He's tonight.
- 22:25McNally's 1-0 to Canigliaro cut out and fouls with extreme and a count level to the ball and a strike.
- 22:33Well, up in New York the Cubs and the Mets were rained out. Cardinals and the Phillies had been rained out in Philadelphia.
- 22:39Now the 1-1-5 coming to Canigliaro.
- 22:42McNally, Ross, and Fires. High fly ball, center field away. Retman is cracking it, waiting.
- 22:49And the Orioles center fielder makes the catch for the first out on the top of the second inning.
- 22:55Weatherman has indicated here in Baltimore that the shower activity should clear and clear this area this evening sometime.
- 23:04And in truth, I must admit that it looks a lot brighter out to the north of us than it did, let's say, an hour ago.
- 23:11Here's Jim Fugosi. He's batting 233 at this early date of the year.
- 23:15McNally is blown outside of Jim, ball one, and he's not 100 percent.
- 23:19He's got a rather sore foot.
- 23:22He finds most of these colors. He finds it's possible to play when he is hurt.
- 23:26Go-on nothing to Fugosi. Again is outside and a count two balls, no strikes.
- 23:34Behind Fugosi, the Angels find third baseman, Karen McMullen.
- 23:39McNally brings that left arm down. The pitch is high and away again. He's had three of them outside of Fugosi.
- 23:46So Jim flashes a look to Rocky Bridges, the California third base coach, to see what Giver Leslie Phillips would have him do on this three-nothing pitch.
- 23:54Well, what do you think you'll do? Get a take. Three-nothing. Take. Strike. It's called.
- 24:00Three balls, miss, right? Two, Fugosi. One out, nobody on. The Orioles won. The Angels nothing. Top of the second.
- 24:07High pop-up off the third base side. Brooks is calling for it. Says, I've got it.
- 24:11Anybody want to make a bet? You've got it.
- 24:14Win foul ground by about a half a step.
- 24:19Two down in the California second and out here is Ken McMullen with a 2-13 batting average and two tonight at 0 for three.
- 24:31Hey, it's beginning to look a little bit better. Every time I say that, I feel like I dread the thought that it might start raining in a half an hour.
- 24:37A lead-up breaking ball is high inside ball one. It really is.
- 24:41Those of you in the Baltimore area who are much better judges of the weather than I am, take a look.
- 24:46Maybe you can come on down and spend some time with it. Here's a swing and a foul ball in the dirt behind the plate.
- 24:51A ball and a strike for Ken McMullen. Would you believe it? Would you believe it?
- 24:56It is raining right this instant. I know senior said that and it started to rain.
- 25:02Oh, you're living right. One ball from McMullen. High for a ball two. Two and one.
- 25:10It's looking better now than it has any time in the last couple of hours and it's raining.
- 25:16Well, here comes a 2-1, 6-10, McMullen. McAllie deals. Ground ball hit toward Brooks at 30. Back in place of Bell High Hop.
- 25:21Now the long, long throw to Powell is in time and McMullen has been retired.
- 25:26Three up and three down at the end of the inning and a half. Baltimore 1, California nothing.
- 25:32Against Andy Measar Smith in the bottom of the second inning, it will be Teacall Simone, Andy Echadar and Richard Dave McBarry in that order.
- 25:40And just before we rolled to the commercial, we had a little bit of a shower start and now it's still sprinkling just a little bit.
- 25:49And I'm afraid for an hour or so this might be what we'll have to contend with, but the weatherman promises us that it's going to clear up a little bit later on this season.
- 25:57And that's about as specific as he can be a little later on this season.
- 26:01Here at Teacall Simone, he's been in five ball games for the Orioles this year. He's been able to play eight times a day since he's been in 1-2-5.
- 26:11And center fielder Ken Barry plays him a little bit toward the alley in right center field.
- 26:15The pitch to Chico is too high, ball one, so the bigger hole in the angle outfield is between center fielder Barry and molecular Alex Johnson.
- 26:23Thinfield appears to be about straight up, maybe a little bit to the third base side.
- 26:29Measar Smith, one nothing to Chico, foul ball coming right up into the TV booth next door and right back out again.
- 26:39One and one, the count.
- 26:45Now the 1-1-5 to Chico, we've only got a peek of this one, fouled it right to the ball man, Mr. Ernie Tyler, who made a sensational, spectacular one-handed catch sitting down.
- 26:58Beautiful, Ernie. One ball from two strikes to Chico.
- 27:03Etchebaran leads on Jack Citty and Dave McManor waiting in the wings.
- 27:10Measar Smith, kind of give it a negative shake now he's ready. Here's the one-two off in Chico.
- 27:16He may have pulled the string a little bit on that pitch and he picks up his second strikeout.
- 27:22Two gone. Andy Etchebaran steps, oh one gone now with Andy Etchebaran stepping in with a 1-67 batting out, which Andy didn't play.
- 27:30That's it, that's it, it's a ball of honor. On the road, Andy Etchebaran.
- 27:44Measar Smith first offering to Etchebaran, ground ball hit right back by the pitcher. It's on through in the center field for a base knock.
- 27:49Etchebaran with a ground, single to center field for the Oriole. Their third base hit off Andy Measar Smith.
- 27:57That'll bring in Dave McNally. Andy has hit pretty well in his lifetime against the Angels. He's filled his 266th lifetime out here.
- 28:06First Dave McNally, his batting average is 187. He has a run batted in.
- 28:18Spencer is holding with Etchebaran to first. McNally squares to bunt and got a pitch down low for a ball one.
- 28:28A little bit of a shower we had, didn't even drop him with skin in the infield. And it seems to have abated now and we find the people coming back to their feet.
- 28:36And perhaps when you get through a dinner you might be able to spend a little time with it. It's a moment of myth now to McNally, no bunt in this wrapping.
- 28:42So the count is one ball, one strike. The bunt was on and the first pitch off on the second.
- 28:52Andy Measar Smith ready to go. The bunt is in order. He's bunted off the first base side. Looks pretty good at a space fair.
- 28:57Picked up by Spencer and they'll play a second. And Spencer, the first baseman, goes back to Alomar covering the first.
- 29:03He's retired the sacrifice and Dave McNally.
- 29:07In the second hand, Etchebaran and up to the plate now, Tommy Soppe in his first round of the year for the Orioles.
- 29:13Tonight in the first inning he's drilled a single to right field and a few moments later he's scored the long run of the ball game.
- 29:24Soppe, a left-handed batter, and he stands pretty well on the front half of the box.
- 29:29Picks out of a bit of a closed stance. Measar Smith ready to go. The pitch to the left hand, Swingy Soppe, is inside. Ball one.
- 29:38We'll use station break. We'll try and get it for you with the earliest opportunity.
- 29:44One and nothing Baltimore over California. We're in the bottom of the second inning of game number one.
- 29:48Measar Smith against McNally. Pitch to Soppe. They're tying away and we pause briefly for station identification.
- 29:53This is the Baltimore Oriole Baseball Network.
- 29:57This is Jalen Fromm for weapon wisdom, touch-through philosophy, and inspiration.
- 30:01Here's Don Spach, 735 mornings on Radio 11, WDAL Baltimore.
- 30:08Measar Smith delivers and here's a cut and a miss by Soppe to make the count now. Two balls and a strike.
- 30:18And the 2-1 offering to Tommy. High fly ball right field way. Cutting to his right is Kenny Gleal setting up under it now.
- 30:25The angel right fielder makes the catch and that'll be the final out of the inning.
- 30:29The Orioles no runs, the base hit and the man left at the end of two complete Baltimore 1, California nothing.
- 30:35While we talk about that day coming along on Sunday afternoon and some of you concerned about your tickets,
- 30:40I'd like to remind you that this coming Sunday at noon, an additional 17,000 general admission and 2,000 bleacher tickets will go on sale right here at the stadium.
- 30:50We not only have the Oakland A's in town, a very fine and interesting ball club to watch.
- 30:55Mother's Day and a Bat Day promotion and the chances are pretty good that you'll have a chance to see truly one of the fine young left-handers
- 31:03to come into the American League in some times in the person of Vita Blue.
- 31:06At this moment, he has scheduled a pitch for Oakland on Sunday.
- 31:10Here's captain Jerry Moses swinging a ground ball to pitch toward Brooks Robinson.
- 31:14He's got it to throw on the foul at first and Moses has resigned on a ground ball the third base.
- 31:19One pitch, one gone. Moses is in 2, 31.
- 31:25Now the batter will be Ken Berry, the angel center fielder.
- 31:30Berry's average is 1, 33 right now, but of course, he's been really fluctuating and very deceiving at this stage of the season.
- 31:39And he's recognized as one of the very fine defensive center fielder from baseball.
- 31:46When the Orioles were in Anaheim, he made it after the pass to home run, trying to wall and hurt his leg.
- 31:53Only played one game. The pitch to Berry, low, ball one.
- 31:59And now he has faced seven men and got them all in order.
- 32:04Here's this one nothing to the right-hand swinging Berry, little high, two balls and no strikes.
- 32:09Had to play for a little high. Berry hits out of an open stand and he's kind of soaked up on the pitch, maybe an inch or so.
- 32:15But now he's not wasting any time. Delivers two nothing. Berry takes a strike over the inside portion of the knee.
- 32:21Two and one now to the California center fielder.
- 32:24Mesmerism beyond that theater.
- 32:30A 2, 1 to Ken Berry. High top. Down the first base side and foul ground.
- 32:35Etchabarren up the line, Powell coming down, and Powell is hollering, Andy, Andy, Andy. And so Etchabarren made the grab.
- 32:41Two gone. Now the California pitcher, Andy Mesmerism. His average is 143.
- 32:48He has not been a run, been to the plate 14 times, has two base hits. One of those went all of the way. A home run.
- 32:56Here is McFaddy first offering to the right-hand-swinging Mesmerism.
- 33:10The right-hand-swinging Mesmerism. Swinging a foul to the screen and he had a good cut at that first offering from McFaddy.
- 33:16One strike. Young man, very, very fortunate to be playing baseball this year.
- 33:22He had a most unfortunate automobile accident earlier in California.
- 33:26Totaled his automobile. And he had the seat belt on fortunate later.
- 33:33One strike, two measures. Little high. One and one now. And also to continue the good fortunate, unfortunate automobile accident.
- 33:43The other people in the other car were OK too. One-one offering. Just missing five with a breaking pitch. Two balls and one strike.
- 33:54Andy back down now. Fires with a quick look towards Rocky Bridges and Bridges reacts just like what's mattered.
- 34:01Two-one foot stand. He's looked out a line drive, knocked down by McNally on the mound. He recovers throws to first base.
- 34:08And wow, that was some kind of a shot. And McNally got the big leather mitt in front of it, knocked it down, recovered and threw out measures.
- 34:14Missed with a final out. Three up and three down. At the end of two and a half. Orioles won California nothing.
- 34:22Well, the California Angels have been forced to make a change at shortstop. Jim Fregosi is unable to continue.
- 34:28He's got a just a very sore foot. And you know, when this fellow takes himself out of a ballgame, you know he's hurting you.
- 34:34And so, Cibill-Blind has come in now to play shortstop for the Angels.
- 34:39It's a combination of two things, as far as Fregosi is concerned. You know, the fact that he probably is most uncomfortable.
- 34:44Secondly, and maybe just as important if not more, that he would not be able to help the club.
- 34:49So here now for the Orioles, Don Huepford in the bottom of the third inning. Messersmith throws the breaking ball low. Wall one.
- 34:56Huepford is tangled in the right field against Messersmith in the first inning.
- 35:00That's when Stilte the third with a foul, knocking him in at a fourth down.
- 35:04Pitch coming to Don. Outside and high to make the count, Cibill, no strikes.
- 35:15Well, tomorrow night the Oakland A's will be in our ballpark.
- 35:18The pitch coming down to Don Huepford is low inside the ball three.
- 35:21And Mike Cuellar goes to the mound tomorrow evening at eight o'clock against Jim Capsaic-Hudders.
- 35:27Saturday night at seven, it'll be Jim Palmer and Chuck Dobson.
- 35:31A ball four is again inside the Buford.
- 35:34So Messersmith has given up now his second walk. He walked Brooks Robinson in the first inning and Buford here in the third.
- 35:41Dobson no record, and he has just been activated about a week ago.
- 35:45And will start Saturday night's game against the Orioles.
- 35:48Sunday afternoon, Grant Jackson is the probable for the Orioles against Vita Blues of the Oakland A's.
- 35:59There's Brew Powell with Buford leading in first base.
- 36:02The pitch is cut on the ground foul as not tied at first.
- 36:05Strike one.
- 36:08Wanderduffing the Orioles.
- 36:12We're in the bottom of the third inning, again number one.
- 36:14And by golly, it's getting to look better.
- 36:16Last time it's had a rain, but it really is.
- 36:22Maybe you might be able to spend a little time with us tonight after the inning.
- 36:27Those who are not saying, we've got room for you.
- 36:29So one strike, kick the foul, high and away, one ball, one strike.
- 36:34Now the 1-1 offering to Brew Powell, Buford leading first.
- 36:37Nobody out.
- 36:38Madison Smith fires in a mist of all and two strikes for the Boog.
- 36:43Now the 1-1 offering to Brew Powell, Buford leading first.
- 36:46Nobody out.
- 36:47Madison Smith fires in a mist of all and two strikes for the Boog.
- 36:52I'm sure holding with Buford at first base.
- 37:09Madison Smith leading five.
- 37:10Fast side, Gary Moseley strikes the ground once.
- 37:13Another lift, another strike at the ground.
- 37:15We're shaking.
- 37:16Powell says, well, that's enough.
- 37:17I walk out of here momentarily.
- 37:19So Brew backs off and Andy takes a little bit of a stroll.
- 37:22Sid O'Brien is now in a short time for the Angels here in the bottom of the third.
- 37:27He's also unable to continue.
- 37:30The 1-2 picks to Powell, way outside, two balls, two strikes.
- 37:50Buford is running to pick his cut on and a foul ball is going to be out of play behind the plate.
- 37:54Buford was going on the tee-two and it was fouled out of play.
- 38:132-2 to Boog Powell, Buford at first and nobody out.
- 38:17Madison Smith working on the only old first base in Powell.
- 38:22Ready to go, the set and the pick.
- 38:24Fly ball, well hit, deep right center, tracking with a spare in the center fielder,
- 38:28cutting over the right fielder, Kanigli Aro, and they go together.
- 38:31And Kanigli Aro made the grab.
- 38:33Buford trying to get the second to throw.
- 38:35Face.
- 38:36Buford head first fly, deep to throw from Kanigli Aro.
- 38:41Powell hit a towering fly ball on the alley in right center and Berry and Kanigli Aro were both there.
- 38:47They bumped just a little bit.
- 38:48Kanigli Aro made the catch and as soon as he made the catch, Buford, who had tagged the first base, took off for second.
- 38:55And in a head-first fly, he beat the tag ever.
- 39:00So Buford takes second as Powell flies to the right fielder, Tony Kanigli Aro.
- 39:05And the batting hour is Brooks Robinson against Madison Smith in the first inning.
- 39:09Brooks do a walk, hits the brook.
- 39:12Just outside, ball one.
- 39:22This is about the second doubleheader of the year for the Orioles.
- 39:24They played one against Detroit and split it.
- 39:26The one-nothing hits the brook.
- 39:28Swing and he didn't get it, a ball and a strike.
- 39:34One-and-one to Brooks Robinson.
- 39:35Buford, the runner, is second, one away now.
- 39:38And Madison Smith goes, spins around looking at second base, didn't follow with the throw.
- 39:44So we're ready to go again with a one-one offering to Brooks.
- 39:48Madison Smith picks and fires.
- 39:50High ball to Junewein.
- 39:55Now the Red Sox won their game this afternoon, so they are now a game and a half in front of the Orioles in the Eastern Division of the American League.
- 40:03These angels are three games behind the leading Oakland A's in the Western Division.
- 40:07Two on fifth, fly ball foul.
- 40:09First base side is out of play.
- 40:18They're down now two and two to Brooks Robinson.
- 40:23Buford is second and one away.
- 40:31Now two-two hits the brook.
- 40:33Swing and a foul right at the plate.
- 40:35Down ball, that little burst of applause you heard down below was directed toward one of the many fine Orioles who picked up that foul ball.
- 40:43Some gentleman had misplayed and they handed it to Youngster.
- 40:47Two and two on the way to Brooks.
- 40:49Madison Smith looking at the dance and Buford is second.
- 40:51Now comes to the plate, swing and another foul ball right at the plate.
- 40:55And this one hits umpire Marty Springstead and he's taking a little bit of a stroll down the end.
- 41:00And trying to shake off the string that that foul ball.
- 41:05Alomar edging in toward the bag behind Buford just a little bit.
- 41:08Hunter takes a good look and here's the pitch to Brooks.
- 41:11Down ball hits toward the shortstop, Fiddle Brian.
- 41:13He's got it.
- 41:14Shrek Buford throws on the first in time.
- 41:16And Brooks has been retired for the second out of the inning.
- 41:19Buford holding second.
- 41:21Two down now and Nerv Retman to strike out, victim of the first inning.
- 41:37Nerv taking just a little more time getting settled in over the plate.
- 41:43And Madison Smith is ready to go.
- 41:45Here's that look to check Buford at second, the pitch to Retman.
- 41:47Swinging the ground ball right out in front of the plate.
- 41:49Swinging butt out to get it to catcher to pick up a good.
- 41:51The throw to first is in the dirt and Spencer came up with it.
- 41:54A fine play from Spencer and a good play from Jerry Mocens.
- 41:57Retires Retman with a full swing.
- 41:59He nudged it maybe ten feet in front of the plate on the third base drive and it's thrown out by Mocens.
- 42:04Three innings complete score.
- 42:05Baltimore one, California nothing.
- 42:13Well Dave McNally has gone through the California batting order for the first time.
- 42:17Three up and three down through the first inning.
- 42:19McNally in pursuit of his first win of the year.
- 42:21He's won four and lost one.
- 42:23Now looks at Alomar for the second time around.
- 42:25It'll be Alomar, Spencer, Johnson.
- 42:27They are the new batters here on the top of the fourth.
- 42:30McNally's pitch to Alomar.
- 42:31Strike gets called.
- 42:32Good breaking ball above the knees.
- 42:37The right-handed batter, the Orioles play Alomar just about straight away.
- 42:42The left-handed batter, they plan to hit the ball to left.
- 42:45Now the one-strike offering coming down to Sandy.
- 42:47He's high and away.
- 42:48One ball and one strike.
- 42:50The fellows have had quite a few game-winning hits for the Angels this year.
- 43:00Now McNally's one-one to Sandy Alomar high and outside. Two balls and one strike.
- 43:15A two-one pitch to Sandy Alomar.
- 43:18Swing and he didn't get the breaking ball.
- 43:21Two and two.
- 43:29He is taking a brief timeout here.
- 43:34Resettling himself with the plane.
- 43:35And here we go.
- 43:37The two-two offering is on the way.
- 43:39High top, first-base side foul.
- 43:41Foul may have a chance if the wind doesn't blow it out of the way.
- 43:44Brugge stays with it and Brugge makes the catch on the warning track.
- 43:47A couple of steps from the Yabox seed railing down the first-base side.
- 43:53Ten on the road, now going down before the left-hand flanks of Dave McNally.
- 43:56And here is Jim Spencer.
- 43:59He ran the count up to three and two before McNally was able to retire the left-handed swinger
- 44:03and a foul popped to Brooks Robinson.
- 44:08McNally's first offering to Spencer missed outside.
- 44:12Ball one.
- 44:21McNally looks for the sign, flashed by Andy Etchadon.
- 44:23Here is the one-up and hits to Spencer.
- 44:26Swing and he didn't get it.
- 44:27A ball and a strike.
- 44:28One ball, one strike.
- 44:29Spencer.
- 44:33First time up Tuesday night, he hit a home run.
- 44:35The first time up last night, he hit another home run.
- 44:37And then the rain came and put that home run away from him.
- 44:40Now the one-one to Spencer.
- 44:42McNally pitches outside and came right on to the screen.
- 44:46Spencer is shortened up on the bat and moves as if he had an idea of a butt.
- 44:50He just looked at it all the way, the count of two balls and a strike again.
- 45:00McNally's two-one offering to Spencer.
- 45:02Swing and a miss.
- 45:03He just drilled a good fastball by two balls, two strikes.
- 45:12One out, nobody on.
- 45:13The OELs won.
- 45:14The Angels nothing.
- 45:15We're in the top of the fourth inning.
- 45:16First of two games and I hit.
- 45:18Kyle Ball coming up in front of the group and out of play.
- 45:47So two-two offering.
- 45:48McNally to Alex Johnson.
- 45:49Here it is.
- 45:50High top-up foul.
- 45:51First base side is going to be out of play.
- 45:59Two-and-two to Johnson.
- 46:01A one-out walk has Jim Spencer at first base.
- 46:05And McNally battling the tough-hitting Alex Johnson with a count two-and-two.
- 46:09Dave is ready to go.
- 46:10Here's that look to first.
- 46:12Another look to first.
- 46:13And the pitch to the plate.
- 46:14Kyle Ball in the dirt behind the plate.
- 46:35McNally offering once more.
- 46:36The two-two offering to Alex Johnson.
- 46:38The arm down the pitch.
- 46:39Down ball hit off the third base side.
- 46:41Brooks Robinson there, the throw to second one, on to first base.
- 46:44They get the double play.
- 46:45Johnson got enough on the throw to Powell to complete the double play on Alex Johnson.
- 46:51It goes from Brooks to Dave Johnson to Voode Powell.
- 46:53And at the end of three-and-one half-inning, the score is Baltimore 1, California nothing.
- 47:02Here we go to the last half of the fourth inning at Memorial Stadium.
- 47:05The first game of a finite double header.
- 47:08The Orioles are sitting on a one-and-nothing lead, and it will now be Dave Johnson,
- 47:12Tico Simone, and Andy Etchibarron against Andy Messersmith out of the California Angels.
- 47:17Andy with a two-and-two record on the year.
- 47:20This is his seventh start of the season.
- 47:22He's thrown two complete games with Messersmith and pitched to a finer and got a 2.25.
- 47:27His curve didn't find a strike zone for all one.
- 47:33Dave Johnson forced Brooks Robinson at second base to end the first inning.
- 47:38So one-nothing back to Dave.
- 47:40Breaking six again high, 2-and-0.
- 47:45Well, we hope a lot of you have made your plans to be at the ballpark perhaps later on tonight,
- 47:50if not definitely this weekend.
- 47:52A two-nothing hit.
- 47:54Low ball three.
- 47:58You don't have to look at the Angels very long to realize they're in improved trouble over a year ago,
- 48:02and the improvement in the open A just jumps out at you.
- 48:06And they're here this weekend.
- 48:08Three-nothing to Dave Johnson.
- 48:10Strike call.
- 48:11Dave's taking three balls and a strike.
- 48:15Well, what do you do with him now in the 3-1 offering?
- 48:19Messersmith into the wind out of the down turn to 3-1 to Johnson.
- 48:24He's got a strike two called over the outside corner for letters.
- 48:27And he's got a throw count to Dave, and he had some on that, and pretty good position to up and away.
- 48:34Pay off, 3-2 to Johnson.
- 48:37Ground ball at the shortstop to O'Brien.
- 48:39He's got it.
- 48:40Now the throw to Spencer at first is in front of you trying to get Johnson.
- 48:43One up, one down, and the ground ball to Short.
- 48:45Seek-all come on.
- 48:47Messersmith struck him out in the second inning.
- 48:51And he has stand two and walked two and allowed three bird bases,
- 48:55and the Orioles making for a run in the first inning.
- 49:05The first offering to Seek-all to Simone outside, ball one.
- 49:17Well, one-nothing to Seek-all.
- 49:19He didn't get it.
- 49:20One ball and one strike.
- 49:31Seek-all is taking a little throw.
- 49:38And now stands in, waiting the 1-1 for Messersmith.
- 49:41He hasn't long to wait because here it comes.
- 49:43All right, all two, two and one.
- 49:47Game two tonight, Jim Maloney will pitch it to the California Angels
- 49:52and Tapp Thompson for the Orioles.
- 49:57Now the 2-1 offering to Simone.
- 50:00Strike two, tall, as he's got the outside forcing right around the knees.
- 50:04Two and two now.
- 50:05One out, nobody on.
- 50:06We're in the bottom of the fourth of a one-to-nothing ball game
- 50:09with the Orioles leading California.
- 50:13The 2-2 pitch.
- 50:16High and away, we fill the count, 3-2.
- 50:30And the free-two to Seek-all, walk in ball four.
- 50:33That's walk number three, issued by Messersmith.
- 50:38Brings out Andy Etchibar.
- 50:40He banged a ground single through the middle of center field
- 50:43first time on in the second inning.
- 50:46The Orioles, of course, respect all of the pitchers they face
- 50:50in this battle for the title in the American League.
- 50:54And certainly Andy Messersmith is no exception.
- 50:57The Orioles, as a ball club, have a lot of respect for this outstanding right-hander.
- 51:01Throw to first base, backspacing, Seek-all.
- 51:05Etchibar making sure that Billy Hunter is not giving many information.
- 51:12Now looking out for the first pitch, high fly ball, shallow right.
- 51:15On comes Kanigliaro, still coming on.
- 51:17The right fielder is still moving in.
- 51:19And Kanigliaro makes the catch but retires.
- 51:22Andy Etchibar, two down.
- 51:25And now the Oriole pitcher, Dave McNally, will stand in.
- 51:29Dave was called upon to sacrifice in the second inning and did so perfectly.
- 51:35Jimmy Palmer have a little friendly competition on their prowess with a bat
- 51:40through the course of the season.
- 51:43And for the most part, I guess he kind of winds up rather close each and every year.
- 51:51Pitch today, strike is called.
- 51:54Springstead played on fire, says strike one.
- 52:00Now the one-strike hit to Noah Joseph for a space, no play on Simone.
- 52:04McNally, as most of you know, I'm sure, a left-handed thrower but a right-handed batter.
- 52:09The one-strike hit, and as the Smiths deliver, he's got a strike two with a breaking pitch.
- 52:140-2 to the count.
- 52:16The pitcher, Dave McNally.
- 52:19Bottom of the fourth, Baltimore 1, California nothing, first of a finite doubleheader.
- 52:24Two strikes hit 20.
- 52:26You're out, Mr. McNally.
- 52:27You gave him another curve ball and picked up strikeout number three.
- 52:30No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 52:31The man left, four complete, Baltimore 1, California nothing.
- 52:35Three, two, one.
- 52:44In the top of the fifth inning, the Angels will bat, Tony Kanigliaro, Sid O'Brien, and Ken McMullen.
- 52:50And before Kanigliaro steps in, we're out for a space embrace.
- 52:52This is the Baltimore Oriole Baseball Network.
- 52:55Hi, Ted Steel here, your morning host on WBAL.
- 52:59Let me help you start the day, Monday through Saturday, 5 to 10 a.m. on Radio 11 WBAL in Baltimore.
- 53:08Now, McNally delivered a strike call to Kanigliaro.
- 53:11Down over the inner portion above the knees, the one strike hits coming.
- 53:15Blown outside.
- 53:17Ball and a strike.
- 53:28Swing and a ground foul headed toward the Oriole dugout, and Jay Mazone makes the play on the dugout steps.
- 53:33The count of the ball and two strikes to Kanigliaro.
- 53:48The one, two, pitch.
- 53:49Check, swing, ground ball, first base sighted is going to be a foul ball now.
- 54:07One ball, two strikes to Kanigliaro.
- 54:11McNally ready to work once more.
- 54:15Back hander delivered, check, swing, foul, again out of play on the first base side.
- 54:31One ball, two strikes to Tony C.
- 54:36Just missed with a breaking pitch.
- 54:38On the count now, two balls, two strikes.
- 54:40Kind of a change from Dave.
- 54:49The two, three, pitch.
- 54:50Fly ball hit down on the left field corner.
- 54:52If it's a fair, it's going to be trouble.
- 54:54It's up against the wall.
- 54:55Playing the count on his way for two, Kanigliaro.
- 54:57Buford's throw coming to second.
- 54:59He is safe at second base.
- 55:01Kanigliaro with a soft line drive in the left field corner, bounced up against the wall for Tony.
- 55:06His ninth two-base hit of the year.
- 55:08And for the Angels, their first hit of the ball game.
- 55:12Kanigliaro opens with a double to left field.
- 55:15Now we look at Sid O'Brien.
- 55:18O'Brien's first trip to the plate tonight, two, three, 91, 0 for four.
- 55:22He is sitting 2-41 on the year.
- 55:24Right hander backhander, Sid.
- 55:29So Kanigliaro out of second base with nobody out here on this top of the fifth inning.
- 55:34McNally working from the stretch.
- 55:36That's Kanigliaro with a look delivered.
- 55:38Strike over the inner portion of the hand.
- 55:40One strike to O'Brien.
- 55:44We'll be moving over to the CD side here momentarily.
- 55:47Make way for our partner, Bill O'Donnell.
- 55:50One strike to Sid O'Brien.
- 55:53McNally ready to go again.
- 55:55Here's his pick.
- 55:57Now outside, one ball, one strike.
- 56:16Now one-one to Sid O'Brien.
- 56:18Down low on the ball, two and one.
- 56:25Two balls and a strike.
- 56:27The count to the Angels shortstop Sid O'Brien.
- 56:29For those he started the game tonight and then had to leave on the third inning
- 56:32his foot was giving him a good bit of trouble.
- 56:39The look to check Kanigliaro at second, the tee one to O'Brien.
- 56:42Ground ball slowly hit toward the charging shortstop, Simone.
- 56:44He makes the pick up snap to throw the power to first in time.
- 56:47And O'Brien is the first out of the inning and on the play.
- 56:50Kanigliaro advances to third base.
- 56:52The slow roller, by the time Simone could get to it,
- 56:55it would be without any infield grass,
- 56:57no chance for her to play on Kanigliaro at third and threw out the batter.
- 57:01Throw is one out on the runner at third base now.
- 57:03The Orioles are forced to play the infield up as Ken McMullen steps in.
- 57:08It's almost tight to the grass on the first base side
- 57:10and a couple of steps back on the third base side.
- 57:13McMullen grounded at Brooks at third in the second.
- 57:15The pitch to Ken, inside, with a big right-handed swing, ball one.
- 57:27The one-hunting pitch, McNally to Ken McMullen.
- 57:32Curve ball inside and a count-out to O'Brien.
- 57:38One out of the inning, runner at third base to Kanigliaro.
- 57:40The Orioles won, the Angels nothing,
- 57:42and a king-size threat mounted here by the Angels.
- 57:45And McNally, two-hunting pitch to McMullen.
- 57:48Ground ball, flashed by Brooks at third at the base pit out of the left-field corner.
- 57:51Here comes Kanigliaro home with a tying run,
- 57:53while McMullen is on his way for two.
- 57:56McMullen has doubled in the left-field corner,
- 57:58scoring Kanigliaro for McMullen, his fifth two-base pit of the year.
- 58:04And his eighth run batted in and a one-one ball game.
- 58:09Here now is Jerry Moses.
- 58:12Moses went out on his ground ball to third base from Brooks Robinson in the third inning.
- 58:20McNally's first offering to Moses.
- 58:22Curve ball hit right up near the booth and out of play.
- 58:24Strike one.
- 58:38And the one-side pitch to Moses, right-hand swinging California catcher.
- 58:42McNally steps and throws, McClone away, one-and-one.
- 58:59And now the one-one offering to Moses.
- 59:01McNally's sixth high drive down the left-field side,
- 59:04hooking it's going to be a foul ball into the deep mound of play.
- 59:08One and two to Moses.
- 59:20McNally reading signs flashed by Eschabourn.
- 59:22He's ready now.
- 59:23The one-two pitch to Jerry Moses.
- 59:26Second swing in time.
- 59:27The pitch is outside and the count now is even at two and two.
- 59:36Alcindegra open the inning with a double to left field.
- 59:39Took third as O'Brien brought it to the shortstop and then scored as McMullin
- 59:43drilled a double between the diving Brooks Robinson in the bag at third.
- 59:47And now the two-two pitch coming to Moses.
- 59:49Foul ball on the screen.
- 59:55The Orioles are on the board with a run on three hits.
- 59:58The Angels are run on two hits.
- 1:00:00They have both been doubled.
- 1:00:02And both here in this fifth inning.
- 1:00:13They've readied a goal, the two-two pitch to Jerry Moses.
- 1:00:17There it is.
- 1:00:19Foul ball coming right up in front of the booth and out of play.
- 1:00:32Beyond that kidder behind Jerry Moses is center fielder Ken Berry.
- 1:00:37McMullin expects one out.
- 1:00:40And McNally battling Moses with a count two and two.
- 1:00:47One-four, the two-two to Moses.
- 1:00:50Stuck him out.
- 1:00:51Don't want to miss.
- 1:00:52Moses goes down.
- 1:00:57Today, McNally is first strikeout of the ballgame.
- 1:01:01Two down now and here is Ken Berry.
- 1:01:03And a foul pop for the catcher Andy Essebaran in the third inning.
- 1:01:21McNally's first offering to the right-hand swinging Ken Berry.
- 1:01:26Inside one ball, no strikes.
- 1:01:40The one-hitting pitch to Berry.
- 1:01:47Swing and a miss and there goes the bat over toward the Oriole dugout.
- 1:01:53McMullin strikes again.
- 1:01:57Pretty good toss on the part of Berry.
- 1:02:01The years I've watched they've spawned, I have to say that Mini Minosso probably was among the very best at throwing the bat.
- 1:02:08Not only for frequency of throw but for distance.
- 1:02:13One-and-one, the count to the batter Berry.
- 1:02:17Not on the runner, second with two down.
- 1:02:23Back to Chilisapa on the left fielder.
- 1:02:25Same old back-calling for Buford on.
- 1:02:26Buford is going to make the catch.
- 1:02:28And the left fielder has it for the final out at the end of four and a half.
- 1:02:31It's the Orioles one and the Angels one.
- 1:02:39Well, good evening everybody.
- 1:02:40Here in the bottom of the fifth inning of game one.
- 1:02:42This is Phil O'Donnell joining you on the radio side.
- 1:02:45We have been changing during our break.
- 1:02:47Our radio and television setup then before the bird stand against Andy Messy Smith.
- 1:02:51Quick rundown of the scoreboard.
- 1:02:53The National League have a Chubs and Mets.
- 1:02:55Rained out today at New York.
- 1:02:57Cross the cards in Philly tonight in Philadelphia.
- 1:03:01Still scheduled in the National League.
- 1:03:03Houston at Montreal.
- 1:03:04Cross Cincinnati much later tonight at Los Angeles.
- 1:03:07A day game in the American League.
- 1:03:09Had the Red Sox pound the White Sox 10-1.
- 1:03:12Gary Peters was the winner.
- 1:03:14And George Scott had his third homer of the year.
- 1:03:18The Ryder, Tom Schilte, begins the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:03:21Plus Buford and Powell.
- 1:03:23He runs up the bunt.
- 1:03:24Just to the left of the mound.
- 1:03:25Fielded by Messy Smith.
- 1:03:26His hurried throw is in time to beat Schilte.
- 1:03:29Schilte trying to butt his way on.
- 1:03:31Should not nudge the bunt between McMullen the third baseman and Messy Smith.
- 1:03:36And Messy Smith smothered it and has just thrown out Tommy Schilte.
- 1:03:42Here's Buford who's been aboard twice in this first game.
- 1:03:45He had a base hit to right in the first inning.
- 1:03:47And then Buford walked his last hit against Messy Smith in the third.
- 1:03:56McMullen against Buford.
- 1:03:58The switch hitter going from the left side against Messy Smith.
- 1:04:00McMullen inside the bag at third.
- 1:04:03A Messy Smith curve drops in belt high to strike one.
- 1:04:07Orioles have three hits off Messy Smith, two in the first inning when they got their own.
- 1:04:12One strike delivery is high.
- 1:04:14One ball and one strike.
- 1:04:17Messy Smith had the injury in misery a year ago.
- 1:04:20Both a rib injury and also a shoulder injury.
- 1:04:23Fires one-one.
- 1:04:24Hing and a missed five-youthed.
- 1:04:26And we run the count to a ball and two strikes.
- 1:04:29Buford batting a 3-11.
- 1:04:31He shows three home runs.
- 1:04:32Plus nine runs down again.
- 1:04:36One-one tie on the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:04:38A one-two hit hits Buford right about belt high in the small of the back.
- 1:04:43So Buford has been aboard now three straight ties against the Angel right-handed.
- 1:04:48Don at first base with a tie-breaking tally here on the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:04:52And here's Boog.
- 1:04:54Boog is 0 for 2.
- 1:04:56He drove home what was the go-ahead run in the ball game in the first inning.
- 1:05:01One hop line smash to Spencer enabled Kiltay to wrap home and score from third base in the first inning.
- 1:05:09Right now Spencer is holding a Buford blade with one down on the bottom of the inning five.
- 1:05:14Hing and a missed five-tower.
- 1:05:19One strike to Boog.
- 1:05:20He has now tied with Killebrew for the American Ligs RBI leadership.
- 1:05:24Both had 23.
- 1:05:26Additionally, Boog is a runner-up in the home run leadership to Tony Oliva.
- 1:05:31A one-strike delivery.
- 1:05:33They pitch out and Buford saves.
- 1:05:35One ball, one strike.
- 1:05:40McMullen is back a good halfway of third base and quite a few strikes inside the foul line.
- 1:05:46O'Brien a short stop.
- 1:05:48Shaves his left side over toward second.
- 1:05:50A toss by Messick Smith is late to first base.
- 1:05:59Messick Smith paying some attention now to Buford's blade before he hits the rubber.
- 1:06:08Powell on a 1-1.
- 1:06:09Buford is running.
- 1:06:10The pitch is in for a strike.
- 1:06:11The throw to second is not in time as Buford sliding to the outfield side of the bag.
- 1:06:17Leaps the cause from Katja Moses to the short stop O'Brien.
- 1:06:25So on the tall strike to Powell, he and Messick Smith are at one ball and two strikes.
- 1:06:32Buford the tie-breaking run at second base with only one away and Brooks is the on deck man.
- 1:06:38Buford watches O'Brien the short stop creep into him as he leaves off second base.
- 1:06:43The look back with by Messick Smith. Works Powell one and two.
- 1:06:47And it just gans off the bottom of the back on a foul tip to the left of home plate.
- 1:06:56We're still at one ball two strikes.
- 1:07:03The steal by Buford incidentally who is the club leader is his fourth steal of the year.
- 1:07:09One and two to Powell again.
- 1:07:11He hits the ground wrap at the second baseman.
- 1:07:13Buford runs to third.
- 1:07:14Alomar throws in time to Spencer.
- 1:07:17Powell is out number two.
- 1:07:18Buford has advanced on a steal after being hit by a pitch on a steal to second and now to third base on Powell's into a ground ball.
- 1:07:28The batter is Brooks Robinson.
- 1:07:30He walked in the first inning and he also bounced to short in the first.
- 1:07:35Now the steal by Buford has extra significance right now because at Buford's children of first base Alomar on the ground ball might have been able to force him a second.
- 1:07:46All right Brooks ball one.
- 1:07:53Brooks batting 227 coming up with Buford at third and two down on the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:07:59Low to Brooks two balls and no strikes.
- 1:08:05If Brooks can't deliver here on the bottom of the fifth inning it'll be Rettman to come up next.
- 1:08:10Buford escaping off third with two away.
- 1:08:13The set and the 2-0 is in the beneath two balls and one strike.
- 1:08:18A reminder if you're coming out to see game two tonight you will look at the former national very great Jim Maloney against Pat Dodson.
- 1:08:26Two on pitch to Brooks Robinson.
- 1:08:29Foul to the base of the screen.
- 1:08:30Go run the count three balls two strikes with two men out and a one-one fifth inning tie.
- 1:08:39Master Smith has not given up a base hit since that's the one out the base knock in the second inning.
- 1:08:47He has put a couple of fellows on and a pair of walks since then plus a hit bat hit batman.
- 1:08:55The right hander steps right under the belt.
- 1:08:57Fires two and two ball free of ties.
- 1:09:03Three balls two strikes to Brooks Robinson with Buford hit by a hit stealing second and then moving the third on fouls and field grounders.
- 1:09:16Master Smith watching Buford come off the bag into foul ground.
- 1:09:20Now watching Moses sitting back on the plate.
- 1:09:22Three and two. Here's a looping base hit to center field and that will put the Orioles out in front two to one.
- 1:09:29A Brooks Robinson base hit with two outs scores.
- 1:09:32John Buford for the go ahead two one Oriole lead.
- 1:09:39Here's Merv Retman who is out on the tap for the third base side of home plate in the third and Retman fanned against Master Smith in the first inning.
- 1:09:48The plate is laid two to one. Rufus the eighth RBI has just slated Buford from third.
- 1:09:58Retman is tossed inside by Andy Master Smith one ball missed side.
- 1:10:07Two runs four hits now for the Orioles against Master Smith and the two one lead in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:10:13Breaking ball snaps too far outside. Two and oh.
- 1:10:17Merv along with Pete Rickards, Tom Dukes and Jim Palmer.
- 1:10:22Special guest today at the annual advertising club luncheon honoring the 1971 champion Orioles.
- 1:10:29Merv goes pushing away from an inside pitch to make a free and go.
- 1:10:37If Merv could deliver just as Brooks get ahead of him we'll also have Johnson here in the bottom of inning five.
- 1:10:43Spencer Bird dogging right at first base along with Brooks Robinson.
- 1:10:48Brooks shortly looked over by Master Smith.
- 1:10:51We and oh for fourth that is the fourth Master Smith walk.
- 1:10:55He gives the Retman the first base ticket that provides Brooks with second base and will bring up Dave Johnson.
- 1:11:02Johnson bounced into a first inning fourth play and rolled out the short in the fourth inning.
- 1:11:09In the twenty two previous games started by Dave Johnson this year he has hit safely in twenty one of those twenty two.
- 1:11:18Brooks at second for Retman the first a swing and a miss with a wide breaking ball.
- 1:11:27Master Smith who has always had the great curve especially when he had that sixteen victory year in 1969.
- 1:11:35Quite an assortment of breaking stuff. He's 0 1 to Dave. He breaks it in the first play he called at the meet.
- 1:11:44Eddie Fisher the knuckleballer begins to hit him the angel both ends.
- 1:11:51Two on two down a two on Oriole lead.
- 1:11:54The next pitch to Dave Johnson from Master Smith.
- 1:11:57Now five one and two.
- 1:12:07Retman has the extra edge at first base because Spencer's playing deep.
- 1:12:11Here's a looping fly ball for a base hit to his shallow right. Brooks turning third coming on to score.
- 1:12:17Retman is going on to third base as Peniglial plays the base hit in shallow right and here's Peniglial running back the ball into the angel infield.
- 1:12:26So Johnson drives over his 18th run of the year.
- 1:12:29He also advances. Retman from first to third as Brooks is scored from second base.
- 1:12:35Two runs here in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:12:40Retman to third and Johnson at first and Pico Simone is the batter.
- 1:12:45Johnson and Brooks Robinson have knocked over the two Oriole runs here in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:12:54Byrd so far in 1971 have won three of four against the angels and have got this double hitter here tonight to wrap up the three game series.
- 1:13:04Johnson off first base and leading as Simone looking at strike one.
- 1:13:13Knuckleballing right hander Fitchett continues to throw and the angel both ends.
- 1:13:18Simone batting with a pair of runs on Seagun and runners at the corner.
- 1:13:22The L1 to Simone. He hits the pop up to the angels infield.
- 1:13:26Here's O'Brien moving back shallow out in the center field and O'Brien for outnumber three.
- 1:13:31Two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Two hits and two men left at the end of five in game one of the double hitter.
- 1:13:37Baltimore three. California one.
- 1:13:47The top of the sixth inning and the baron drops a pitcher Andy Messersmith and he's just fouled off McNally's first pick to the upper deck out in left field.
- 1:13:55Messersmith sent a hotliner right to McNally and McNally tossed him out on the third.
- 1:14:01McNally pointed in on one. Here's the ground ball shot to Brooks.
- 1:14:05Brooks with a good pick up line at third and he guns out Messersmith over the foul.
- 1:14:10Out number one in the angels sixth inning.
- 1:14:14The laid off man again now Sandy Alomar. He has bounced out to second and fouled out the first baseman foul.
- 1:14:21Alomar twice was part of McNally's early swing in the ball game in which McNally stepped down the first ten batters to meet him before he walked his center with one out in the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:14:33Birds are leading by a score of three to one.
- 1:14:37McNally's first pitch to the fourth hitting Alomar rides right in for strike one called.
- 1:14:44Alomar when he bats from the other side more or less is a flat hitter. He's more of an orthodox hitter from the right side.
- 1:14:53Alomar to be followed by first baseman Spencer.
- 1:14:58Birds three runs and five hits off Messersmith and the angels will run in just two hits against McNally.
- 1:15:06McNally fits both shutout and hitless ball through the first four innings.
- 1:15:11His one strike delivery tops in and it's in for strike two called.
- 1:15:15All in through the counter Sandy Alomar.
- 1:15:28McNally putting the heat on Alomar. He's way ahead on two. Wines and now the next deal.
- 1:15:32He's fouled back to the plate. Still no balls and two strikes.
- 1:15:37Don't forget now all you youngsters listening to this opening game to the double header.
- 1:15:41A big day for you here at the ballpark on Sunday. It is that day at two o'clock against the Oakland A's.
- 1:15:48McNally boasting at the rubber. Steps back and now comes in on two.
- 1:15:52Fast ball a little outside. One ball two strikes.
- 1:15:58Thus far McNally has not had the difficulty controlling the breaking ball that he had at Kansas City in his last start over the weekend.
- 1:16:06Then he comes one and two with a breaking ball and Alomar checking his swing and time inside.
- 1:16:12Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:16:21One down top of the sixth inning.
- 1:16:24McNally steps a rip in the 2-2. Here it is. It's fouled off and out of play.
- 1:16:41McNally going in Alomar again. He will in just a few moments. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:16:46Here it is once again. Two and two. Low. Three balls. Two strikes.
- 1:17:02McNally against Alomar with a K-6. Three and two. There's a loop and fly ball to shallow left.
- 1:17:09Buford with a late start. Coming, coming and makes the put out. Buford started to step back. Then he realized the ball was hit kind of shallow.
- 1:17:16So Buford had time to get to that loop and fly ball. He fires Alomar. Two away.
- 1:17:21The batter is first baseman Jim Spencer. Spencer became the Angels' first baserunner as he drew a fourth inning walk.
- 1:17:34Left-hander McNally against the left-hand cuffs of the powerfully built Spencer. The first pitch to Spencer is a low curve ball one.
- 1:17:42Spencer five homers. Nine runs that again. A quick step away now by Spencer out of the batter's box.
- 1:17:49Look at something flash this way by third base coach Rocky Bridges. The one ball pitch by McNally is low. Two and go.
- 1:18:02Spencer played over a bit but not too deep right now by still paying right. And played well to right center by Ratner.
- 1:18:09McNally behind. Two and oh. Swing and a miss. Two balls and one strike.
- 1:18:23McNally with a play. Two and one. Here's the ground ball to the right of second base. Johnson gets over, digs it out, and his pickball is in time.
- 1:18:30And he's played by Johnson to tire Spencer and that's the final out of the Angels' sixth inning.
- 1:18:35At the end of five and a half on the opener, Orioles three of the Angels won.
- 1:18:41A day before the Orioles sat on the bottom of the sixth inning and they'll bat with extra baron McNally and Philpay.
- 1:18:46We'd like to acknowledge the wire that was sent to us some days ago from Fort Lauderdale, Florida by a Mr. Dan O'Connell.
- 1:18:53It was sent to us while we were on the road but unfortunately it was not received until we came back into town.
- 1:19:00And Mr. Dan O'Connell from Fort Lauderdale, Florida tells us that there are still a lot of Baltimore birds left in South Florida.
- 1:19:08And he said we would fill the stadium twice over if we all came home. So our thanks for that wire to Mr. Dan O'Connell of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
- 1:19:17Mr. Smith gets the outside corner and strikes one to Esteban. His next pick breaks outside and low. One ball and one strike.
- 1:19:32Andy, one for two in this opener. Takes inside corner at the knees. One and two.
- 1:19:38Keeping it south Florida and all the stations on our Oriole network will give you a station break just a few moments.
- 1:19:47So one, two picks to Andy. Outside, so send the catch, two balls and two strikes.
- 1:19:52McNally will be the next batter and then Philpay.
- 1:19:59Two, two to Andy Esteban. He's fouls it on the ground, back of home plate.
- 1:20:04And that's the station identification. This is the Oriole baseball network.
- 1:20:09Hi, Jay Grayson. Let me give you a list on your way home. Week A 2-6 here on Radio 11 WBAL Baltimore.
- 1:20:20All right, Mr. Smith after the down with a 2-2 and it breaks it low outside.
- 1:20:25He's got three balls and two strikes. Andy came in tonight to the first game of the Quindale batting at 1-6-2-7.
- 1:20:35He's all the way now, full counter 3-2. That's what Smith feels.
- 1:20:39Here's a foul tapped out to the third base foul line.
- 1:20:46Game two of the double-hunter tonight. Former National League right-handed great Jim Maloney
- 1:20:51will make his second start this season against the Birds and he'll be opposed by Oriole right-hander Pat Thompson.
- 1:20:58That's in game two here at the ballpark tonight.
- 1:21:02Mr. Smith fighting Esteban. 3-2 again. It's strike three on the outside corner.
- 1:21:09Four strikeouts for Mr. Smith. Now he'll face Dave McNally.
- 1:21:17He made McNally look at strike three on the fourth.
- 1:21:21He has just added Esteban to a strikeout list with McNally, Rhett and Mund and Simone.
- 1:21:29One-dog base is empty in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:21:32Here's a loop and fly ball to center field. Barry going to his right and the Angels center fielder puts it away.
- 1:21:40Two-gon and the leadoff man, Connie Kilpe. Kilpe is one for three with a line base hit to the right in the first inning.
- 1:21:49Kilpe slides to the right in the second. He tried to butt his way on and was tossed out by the fifth-danester Smith in the fifth inning.
- 1:22:01Kilpe as an Oriole this year is two for nine.
- 1:22:07He'll go right to the front of the box and he'll lean from the waste right across the plate.
- 1:22:12They sustain him in a way. Here's a ground chopper at the second baseman pulled down by Alomar.
- 1:22:18He's thrilled he's Kilpe and that's out number three.
- 1:22:20At the end of sixth inning is his play. Baltimore three. California Angels one.
- 1:22:27He's going to fly to Miami for just $111 per person on our new seven-day round trip excursion fair.
- 1:22:38As well as we turn our attention to the bottom to the top of the seventh inning, three defensive switches now by the Orioles.
- 1:22:44Belanger is a shortstop replacing Simone.
- 1:22:48Retmund stays in the ballgame but Nerve moves from center to right field and the new center fielder is Paul Blair.
- 1:22:56So your Oriole outfield looks like this.
- 1:22:58Buford left, Blair center, Ret in London right, and the infield, Brooks third, Belanger for Simone at short, Johnson still at second, and Booze at first.
- 1:23:07Alex Johnson is the angel batter in the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:23:11He pops it up toward Belanger and out to shallow left center.
- 1:23:14Buford from left, Blair from center. Blair calls off Belanger and Blair for out number one.
- 1:23:20Johnson, still without a base hit in this series, is now 0-8 after shying and shallow center to Blair.
- 1:23:30One down and the batter is Tony Canigliel.
- 1:23:33He had the first base hit off McNally.
- 1:23:35A double to left to begin the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:23:38He's an advance on O'Brien's ground ball and scored on McMullen's two-baggers.
- 1:23:43McNally with a two on lead.
- 1:23:45He's on top of the Angels three to one.
- 1:23:48Here's a line drive by Canigliel to right field for his second base hit.
- 1:23:52Hit number three off McNally.
- 1:24:03Sid O'Brien making his second visit to the plate.
- 1:24:09Speaking of those changes with Blair in center, Retman moving to right field, and Belanger at short for Simone,
- 1:24:16Blair will be hitting and still pays lead off front.
- 1:24:20Belanger will bat where Simone did, namely seventh in the order.
- 1:24:26O'Brien up with one gone. Canigliel, our first base held the foul.
- 1:24:30Low, it had the plate but underneath, ball one.
- 1:24:36It's one ball, no strikes to Sid O'Brien.
- 1:24:40Canigliel short lead against the left-handed looks of McNally.
- 1:24:44One-oh fire is fouled back of the plate.
- 1:24:47Andy gets rid of the mass.
- 1:24:49Coming near the Angels on deck area, there's out number two made by Esteban.
- 1:24:54Two away, Canigliel outstays putt at first base,
- 1:24:58and now the Angels will have the fellow come to the plate and knocks over their fifth inning run.
- 1:25:02McMullen with a fifth inning two-baggers.
- 1:25:04Also bounced out to third in the second inning.
- 1:25:09McMullen batting a 2-13, has two home runs and eight runs batted in.
- 1:25:14Moses is the Angel on deck.
- 1:25:18The set by McNally just under the belt, kicks and deals outside, ball one.
- 1:25:30O'Brien who has seen American leg service with the red sox, the white sox,
- 1:25:34and this year under Leslie Phillips out in California.
- 1:25:39McNally pouring it in one and oh.
- 1:25:41He blows two balls and no strikes.
- 1:25:47Rocky Bridges flashing from the third base coaching line, hit for a take now to McMullen.
- 1:25:55Shortly by Canigliel with two men out, McMullen on the two-oh.
- 1:25:59He doesn't get it, two balls and one strike.
- 1:26:09Now staying right at first base, trying to shorten up as much as possible the lead by Canigliel.
- 1:26:15McNally steps and throws that way and 23 is back safely.
- 1:26:20McMullen at the plate batting with Seagone in the Angels' seventh inning.
- 1:26:24Another look by McNally toward Canigliel.
- 1:26:27Now he works McMullen outside, swing and one.
- 1:26:33McMullen has been known in baseball jargon as a free-kitter
- 1:26:38and he's also known as a fellow who normally has a better second half than a first half.
- 1:26:43He's ahead of McNally.
- 1:26:46Tires, swing and one, strikes two at his knees.
- 1:26:54This can shoot Canigliel now loose from first base with two men out and a 3-2 pitch to McMullen.
- 1:27:01The lead by Canigliel.
- 1:27:05He's running.
- 1:27:06The 3-2 pitch is inside and saved by Etchiband from going back towards the screen.
- 1:27:11Canigliel moves to second.
- 1:27:13A two-out walk to McMullen has him at first base.
- 1:27:16That's the second McNally walk.
- 1:27:22Here's Moses who's been up and out twice on a ground ball to third in his last trip, McNally's standing.
- 1:27:27That was in the fifth inning.
- 1:27:29Moses is seventh in the Angel order.
- 1:27:34Canigliel at second base.
- 1:27:36McMullen at first base with a good lead, Powell's trying back deep.
- 1:27:40Moses swings. He doesn't get it. Strike one.
- 1:27:51Canigliel moving away from second base, watching Johnson to one side, Blander to the other.
- 1:27:57Moses on the 0-1, swings and misses again, 0-2.
- 1:28:02Activity now beginning in the Oriole left field bullpen.
- 1:28:10Dixon-Ricard, right-hander and left-hander at work.
- 1:28:15McNally has moved ahead, 0-2 to Jerry Moses.
- 1:28:19The next delivery way inside, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:28:26On that two-side kick by McNally, Etchibarron was shifting the feet and clearly gave McNally the inside belt-high target.
- 1:28:34Etchibarron sitting back, wigwagging to McNally's long look.
- 1:28:40A stretch by McNally and his sack of the runners. His next delivery to Moses is outside, 2-2.
- 1:28:53Angel runners lead at second and first.
- 1:28:56The Birds are on top in the first game of the point bill, 3-1.
- 1:29:00Two on, two out, 2-2, hit.
- 1:29:03Hanging in a mess, he strikes them out.
- 1:29:05McNally has spanned Moses twice in the ball game.
- 1:29:07No runs, one hit, two spanned in the middle of the seventh inning of game one.
- 1:29:12Third-three, the Angels won.
- 1:29:15One away on the home half of the seventh inning, and here's Powell who has gone 0-3,
- 1:29:20but not built his 23rd run of the season in the first inning.
- 1:29:25Powell will be followed by Brooks.
- 1:29:28Three runs, five hits off Messy Smith, one run, three hits against McNally.
- 1:29:36One down, bases empty.
- 1:29:38Breaking ball, snapping low and tight, ball one.
- 1:29:43The Angel in field does not over-strip against Powell.
- 1:29:46It does play O'Brien deep to the third base side of second base.
- 1:29:51The ball one delivers.
- 1:29:53Banned on the ground, deeper first, club nicely by Spencer.
- 1:29:56He weighs off Messy Smith and Spencer for the unassisted put-up.
- 1:30:00Powell is out number two.
- 1:30:04Messy Smith, instead of up Johnson's RBI single in the fifth inning,
- 1:30:08has now retired sixth in a row.
- 1:30:12At the number seven, he has done since the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:30:37Still carries a 3-1 lead on the Angels.
- 1:30:43He'll push against Barry, the number eight man on the order,
- 1:30:45then very likely a pinch of a for Messy Smith and the leadoff man Alomar.
- 1:30:49Barry taking low and tight, ball one.
- 1:30:52Let's see, Leslie Phillips can pick from a poor board if he wants to.
- 1:30:56Billy Town and Tito Ruiz, with John Stevenson, with Tony Gonzalez.
- 1:31:01He's outside, McNally, two balls and no strikes.
- 1:31:06Barry, side crawl to Barry's knee.
- 1:31:16Barry against Prowd out and Clyde out.
- 1:31:19He lands a ground shot right past third base third, Bridger.
- 1:31:22Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:31:31Barry batting at 133.
- 1:31:33McNally's next delivery on the way.
- 1:31:35Hit high and deep, but curving foul out to Leslie.
- 1:31:50Eddie Fisher is up warming again, and the Angel bullpen here in the top of the eighth.
- 1:31:54Two to Barry, ball three upstairs.
- 1:31:57Three balls and two strikes.
- 1:32:00We still have the threatening skies, and we're all around the ballpark to start our game.
- 1:32:04We did have rain in the early innings.
- 1:32:06Three to Barry, ball four.
- 1:32:09Well, for the first time this season now, McNally has walked more than two men in the ballgame.
- 1:32:14He has walked three.
- 1:32:20Billy Callan will be the batter and not Andy Messick Smith.
- 1:32:24Billy Callan picked him up and sent him.
- 1:32:32Billy Callan has been to the plate seven times with two base hits,
- 1:32:36so that gives him the early season angel average of 286.
- 1:32:44McNally and Etchiburn have a quick conversation with the mound,
- 1:32:48as Barry is the runner at first base here in the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:32:53Watt with Ricketts warming in the oil bullpen while Fisher still warms in the angel bullpen.
- 1:33:00There had been some overnight conversation, but Eddie Fisher might be the second game starter
- 1:33:06prior to the start of our doubleheaders, the nomination one for Jim Maloney.
- 1:33:13Alomar is the man on deck. Billy Callan is batting for Messick Smith.
- 1:33:18McNally looks to the lead by Barry at first base.
- 1:33:21Close the right-hand batter. Queens and Mississ strike long.
- 1:33:28Nobody out in the angel eighth inning, as the Birds are leading California 3-1.
- 1:33:36McNally comes in 0-1-1, gives a foul ball straight back to the screen.
- 1:33:40No balls and two strikes to Callan, batting for Messick Smith.
- 1:33:48The last time out against the angels, McNally, who had the complete game win,
- 1:33:52did not walk an angel batter.
- 1:33:55He just passed his third of the game to start the top of the eighth.
- 1:33:580-2 whips in, and a nurse who strikes him out.
- 1:34:01Three strikeouts for Dave McNally, and out number one in the top of the eighth.
- 1:34:06The top of the order now means Sandy Alomar.
- 1:34:11Alomar has bounced out, fouled out, and flied to left.
- 1:34:20Foul will continue to hold on Ken Barry at first base.
- 1:34:31Alomar, the switch-swinging leadoff batter,
- 1:34:34pulls the bat from the third base side of the plate and hits the ground foul out to his third.
- 1:34:45In four of the previous seven innings, McNally has faced only three men,
- 1:34:50and he had a no-hitter through the first four innings.
- 1:34:54Angels got their only run on the fifth on doubles by Kenigley Al and McMullen.
- 1:34:59Alomar, in a one-strike offering, hits the ground ball through the hole out to left heel for a base hit.
- 1:35:04Barry will stop at second base, and is hit number four against McNally.
- 1:35:10Here's Alomar's third hit in the series after he went two for five in the opening ballgame two nights ago.
- 1:35:16Jim Spencer is up, and his hit list was a walk against McNally.
- 1:35:22The Angels were very close to the second, and Alomar hanging at first base.
- 1:35:29Three to one is McNally's lead in the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:35:33The outfield around the right.
- 1:35:36Blair is over, pushed into right center.
- 1:35:38Two runners' lead. One man's out.
- 1:35:40McNally to Spencer goes high, ball one.
- 1:35:45Well, as we are in the late stages of this first game of the double-headed,
- 1:35:49a lot of people now are beginning to walk their way into the stadium.
- 1:35:55Spencer one ball in the strike.
- 1:35:58McNally serves his next one, which is foul down the left heel side.
- 1:36:03One ball and one strike.
- 1:36:06His first fill at work in the Angel pen.
- 1:36:09Cross left-hander Richard and right-hander Watt in the bird bowl pen.
- 1:36:24Spencer dueling McNally. One ball, one strike.
- 1:36:28Barry away from second base.
- 1:36:30Alomar much better lead at first base as foul is playing deep.
- 1:36:33A look for the bases by McNally. One and one.
- 1:36:36He's a foul right in the batter's box.
- 1:36:38One ball and two strikes.
- 1:36:44Spencer makes his home not too far from Baltimore during the offseason.
- 1:36:47As a matter of fact, he resides during the offseason in Lincolta, Maryland.
- 1:36:58McNally watching Esther Bernstein.
- 1:37:04Looking back, the lead by Barry and over to Alomar at first base.
- 1:37:07He's ahead of Spencer. Fires one and two.
- 1:37:10A sidearmor bounce towards the foul.
- 1:37:12Backed up by Johnson. Close to McNally covering for the putout against Spencer and the runners advance.
- 1:37:18The ground ball was wide at first.
- 1:37:20Powell gave it the backhand bid. Couldn't get to it.
- 1:37:23Johnson roamed to his left side. Did get to it.
- 1:37:25McNally covered for the second out.
- 1:37:27Meanwhile, Alomar goes to second, plus Terry to third.
- 1:37:30And the batter is Alex Johnson.
- 1:37:36Johnson has gone 0 for 3.
- 1:37:39Bounced out to second and the third.
- 1:37:41Rounded into a fourth inning double play.
- 1:37:43Flyed to center in the seventh inning.
- 1:37:45Runners at second and third.
- 1:37:48Long lead now by Alomar at second base on the pitch to Johnson.
- 1:37:51It's high. Ball one.
- 1:37:54Alomar had a good five or six-five lead away from second base as McNally came into Johnson.
- 1:38:04Alomar again extending his lead.
- 1:38:06Plus Terry off third. The one-oh.
- 1:38:08It's lined right up the shortstop, the Lancia, to the tie at the side in the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:38:14Now Mr. Johnson hit a bullet, but the Lancia was flying in the right spot and he was there at the right spot at the right time.
- 1:38:21In the Angel eight, Mill runs one hit and two left at the end of seven and a half innings of play.
- 1:38:26Orioles three, the Angels one.

- 1:39:39The new Angel pitcher with Messer Smith going out on the top after the spinning for a pinch hitter cowan.
- 1:39:44The new Angel pitcher is knuckleballing right-hander veteran Eddie Fischer.
- 1:39:48Picking up for Messer Smith who worked seven innings, gave a three-run five-hit, walked four, and struck out four.
- 1:39:55Fischer is also the top winner on the Angels staff this season.
- 1:40:00He has worked prior to tonight ten times in relief, has won four and lost one.
- 1:40:07Fischer's got an outstanding early season in-run average of less than two runs a ballgame.
- 1:40:12As a matter of fact, most of those from the Angels both in early this season, like Fischer, have outstanding ERAs.
- 1:40:19LaRosha with an outstanding ERA, along with the Mel Queen.
- 1:40:26Fischer in the bottom of the eighth inning was Fischer-Rettenbaum, Johnson, and Boandji.

- 1:41:06Fischer goes with that nuttily low inside, ball one.
- 1:41:16The windup by the right-hander is one-oh-kick. He is low for ball two.
- 1:41:22Fischer now has requested a different ball from plate umpire Marty Swingster.
- 1:41:33Although Fischer is primarily a releaser, he did start the two-angel ballgames a year ago,
- 1:41:39one against Oakland and the other one against Minnesota.
- 1:41:43Who went on to merv Rettmund? That's answers right for you, first strike.
- 1:41:47Rettmund calls in one strike, nerve batting 250 with a homerun, plus eight runs down again.

- 1:42:05Rettmund bouncing out and breaking the bat at the same time.
- 1:42:09One down, bottom of the eighth, and now to Dave Johnson.
- 1:42:14Johnson had a base hit in the fifth inning and drove over a run.
- 1:42:18He has won for three tonight. He has hit safely in 22 of the 23 games in which he has played.
- 1:42:26He has only failed to play in one game this year.
- 1:42:30Fischer working to Johnson with one away, which inside ball one.
- 1:42:36The two batters in the angel ninth are Tenigliao, O'Brien, and McMullin.

- 1:43:00Johnson defies his one-one offering.
- 1:43:03It's outside and gets by the good Moses Matthews, specially for knuckleballing Eddie Fischer.
- 1:43:09Two balls and one strike.
- 1:43:19Talk about fellows earning their paychecks. Well, certainly Fischer has done that the last five or six seasons.
- 1:43:25Just looking at the last season, he worked in 67 angel games.
- 1:43:29He goes high. He goes at the letters to Johnson. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:43:35In 1965 at Chicago, Fischer worked 82 games for the White Sox.
- 1:43:41Two-two to Dave Johnson.
- 1:43:43Fly ball down the right field foul line. Tenigliao giving it a chase to the foul line and it's in the seats and out of play.
- 1:43:52In 1965, when Fischer worked an 82 game for the White Sox, that was his greatest winning year in the majors as he gained 15 wins against seven defeats.

- 1:45:56The wind up by Eddie Fischer with two men out.
- 1:45:59And a miss dropped by Moses. He picks you up in front of home plate.
- 1:46:03Moses in time to center with his throw to retire the side.
- 1:46:06At the end of eighth, third play, the Angels won.
- 1:46:12Good taste and good beer is our specialty.
- 1:46:19We just force the visuality.
- 1:46:21Lots of building informality.
- 1:46:23Enjoy a national beer.
- 1:46:26The golden gifts you are a query.
- 1:46:29If you need even the saggitarius, you find yourself a scorer.
- 1:46:33We dare you to serve a national beer.
- 1:46:36Put the happy face in beer, our national beer.
- 1:46:39And it got there the wrong way because in 1634 beer had been brewed here.
- 1:46:45Only from a land with a traditional power could come a beer-gifted hour.
- 1:46:56The Nidalee Isle will start at the top of the ninth inning.
- 1:46:58And before we back against McNally, we'll pause for station identification.
- 1:47:01This is the Baltimore Orioles baseball net.
- 1:47:04This is Doug Tarrant, got a green thumb.
- 1:47:07And looking to Mitch Bevin, the weekend gardener, 10.30 every Saturday morning here on Radio 11 WBAL in Baltimore.
- 1:47:17Dave McNally tonight in his seventh start, trying to gain his fifth win.
- 1:47:21Throw to Taniglial who fouls it right back to the screen.
- 1:47:24Tony C has two base hits against McNally.
- 1:47:27And he has scored the only Angel run which came in the fifth.
- 1:47:32McNally trying to pour it through to Taniglial, Owen Warren.
- 1:47:35Here's a ground ball slowly tapped out to third, charged by Brooks, has it on the glass, throws in time to Powell.
- 1:47:40To just get to Taniglial at first three.
- 1:47:43First down in the top of the ninth inning.
- 1:47:47So the good defense employed by Brooks gets McNally at first down.
- 1:47:54The Angels now bat there's two stops to O'Brien.
- 1:47:57Since replacing for Dosey, he has grounded a short and fouled to the catcher.
- 1:48:06O'Brien's feet set close together, batting right-handed against McNally.
- 1:48:09His first pitch to O'Brien, and then quickly to strike one goal.
- 1:48:14The on-back man is third baseman, McMullen.
- 1:48:17This is the top of the ninth, game one to the double-headed.
- 1:48:19McNally and McBurke leading three to one.
- 1:48:22So one strike delivery outside, one ball, one strike.
- 1:48:34McNally winding and throws, one and one.
- 1:48:36Low for ball two, two balls and one strike.
- 1:48:46McNally at ten in the arms, wide to the side.
- 1:48:49His two-one pitch, grounded to shortstop, Valencia.
- 1:48:52Throws to Powell, out number two.
- 1:48:55So Taniglial and O'Brien are gone on infield grounders,
- 1:48:58and the Angels leave it up now to Ken McMullen.
- 1:49:02McMullen doubles in the fifth inning, drove over the Angel run.
- 1:49:05He has also bounced out and walked.
- 1:49:16McMullen tall and a wrecked right-hand batter.
- 1:49:19A little bit to the front of the box on McNally's first offering.
- 1:49:22Sides with an outside corner fastball.
- 1:49:29McNally winds. He deals McMullen, one-one.
- 1:49:32Low, one ball and one strike.
- 1:49:37The Orioles trying to get back to within a game of the Red Sox,
- 1:49:41who won this afternoon, beating Chicago ten to one.
- 1:49:44One-one, ripped in by McNally.
- 1:49:46With a fly ball to right field, retinue on going back,
- 1:49:49going back and getting there, and the ball game is over.
