- 0:00Speaker 1: The views and opinions expressed on this program do not
- 0:02Speaker 1: necessarily reflect the views and opinions of five eight WHS
- 0:06Speaker 1: it's employees or WVRC Media.
- 0:20Speaker 2: And a very pleasant good morning to you. You're listening
- 0:22Speaker 2: to ask the expert of you see HS the Voice
- 0:24Speaker 2: of Charleston.
- 0:24Speaker 3: I'm Del Cooper.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Thanks for tuning in on this Wednesday morning, and we
- 0:29Speaker 2: can get a more up to date traffic report than
- 0:31Speaker 2: what Chapel just gave us. Larry Dawson is on the
- 0:33Speaker 2: road this morning, unfortunately stuck in traffic on I sixty
- 0:37Speaker 2: four headed eastbound at that wreck that's in between Oakwood
- 0:41Speaker 2: and Virginia, moving very slowly coming into town this morning,
- 0:44Speaker 2: but joins us on the phone right now. Larry Dawson
- 0:46Speaker 2: is with us. Good morning, Larry, how you doing.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Good morning.
- 0:49Speaker 5: My advice to anybody headed eastbound spite an alternative through
- 0:55Speaker 5: yes or don't be in a hurry. There's in your
- 0:59Speaker 5: spot between Montros to Virginia and we're starting to move very.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Very slow, so keep that in mind. This is this
- 1:07Speaker 2: is as fresh as it comes to you. This traffic
- 1:10Speaker 2: update from downtown Charleston. Sixty four eastbound still backed up
- 1:13Speaker 2: right now, starting to move through just a little bit.
- 1:15Speaker 2: But if if you're are time sensitive, like for instance,
- 1:18Speaker 2: you have a radio show you need to make it too,
- 1:20Speaker 2: you might might give yourself a few extra minutes. Nothing
- 1:23Speaker 2: Larry could do about this, And luckily we have we
- 1:25Speaker 2: have phone lines that are available to us, so you
- 1:32Speaker 2: can you can get in this morning and Larry can
- 1:34Speaker 2: help you out like always, if you want to give
- 1:35Speaker 2: us a call this morning, you can do that. I
- 1:36Speaker 2: can bridge you on the phone until if Larry gets
- 1:38Speaker 2: into the studio. Until then you can give us a
- 1:40Speaker 2: call three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty
- 1:42Speaker 2: eight three four five fifty eight fifty eight. You can
- 1:43Speaker 2: also text us over your questions. Three es are A
- 1:45Speaker 2: four non three five five zero zero eight. Three es
- 1:48Speaker 2: are A four non three five five zero zero eight.
- 1:50Speaker 2: If you want to get a hold of Larry Dawson
- 1:52Speaker 2: other than the traffic this morning, Larry, what's what's on
- 1:55Speaker 2: your mind this morning to talk about?
- 1:57Speaker 4: Well, it's a beautiful morning.
- 2:00Speaker 5: I'll tell you my dell. My truck that I'm driving
- 2:06Speaker 5: has got alerts or cars is all the way around
- 2:09Speaker 5: me and it's blanking you and I out, And unfortunately
- 2:13Speaker 5: I don't know if we're going to be able to
- 2:14Speaker 5: do this via telephone. Okay, it keeps what's happening is
- 2:19Speaker 5: I'm talking to you through the truck itself, and because
- 2:24Speaker 5: we're so crowded in here that the alerts are going
- 2:28Speaker 5: off on the screen, it makes the noise and cuts
- 2:32Speaker 5: its oizes. We can continue on, but if I blank out.
- 2:35Speaker 5: That is the reason I'm doing that.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Man challenges everywhere this morning when it comes to when
- 2:42Speaker 2: it comes to this type of thing, and I understand
- 2:44Speaker 2: where it comes from. Larry, just let us know how
- 2:45Speaker 2: we need to roll with it and we can make
- 2:47Speaker 2: that work. But we'll try to get through as much
- 2:50Speaker 2: as possible. Right now, one of the things I thought
- 2:53Speaker 2: that we could touch on just briefly while you're kind
- 2:54Speaker 2: of making your way in here this morning. I've heard
- 2:57Speaker 2: your newer commercial that you've been running on our area.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Was thinking folks for listening over times and also for
- 3:05Speaker 2: relying on Larry Dawson. And you mentioned in your in
- 3:07Speaker 2: your recent commercial that you have that you still are
- 3:10Speaker 2: able to help folks out, that you're still available out
- 3:13Speaker 2: there for a consultation and things like that. And although
- 3:15Speaker 2: we talk around about that a lot, when you come
- 3:17Speaker 2: on the program. I thought that I would give you
- 3:18Speaker 2: the opportunity to let folks know that exactly how Larry
- 3:21Speaker 2: Dawson can still help them out in the projects that
- 3:24Speaker 2: you're working on. Now.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Well, thank you. That's that's actually one of areas that
- 3:31Speaker 5: I was going to talk to you about.
- 3:32Speaker 4: If you remember, after.
- 3:33Speaker 5: I got off the show last month, I text you,
- 3:36Speaker 5: and I found out something about Carvana that I had
- 3:41Speaker 5: no idea when I left the station. Last month. I
- 3:45Speaker 5: got a phone call and wanted to know if I
- 3:48Speaker 5: was interested in buying the car. Normally, I went through
- 3:50Speaker 5: the brief conversation, tell me what you have and what
- 3:53Speaker 5: you're doing. And they had contacted Carvana and then made
- 3:57Speaker 5: a deal with Carvana. When I say deal, they had arrived.
- 4:00Speaker 4: That figure.
- 4:02Speaker 5: And they shared it with me, and I said, well,
- 4:04Speaker 5: I'm considerably higher than that. But I said, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 5: I need to see the vehicle. And so we got
- 4:09Speaker 5: together with him and all of an hour or so
- 4:11Speaker 5: and I looked at the vehicle, and as I was
- 4:16Speaker 5: buying their car, I asked him, I said, why did
- 4:18Speaker 5: you choose me and not continue the process with Carvana?
- 4:23Speaker 4: And I did not know this.
- 4:26Speaker 5: They were charging the customer four hundred dollars pickup fee
- 4:31Speaker 5: to come and buy the car, to pick the car
- 4:33Speaker 5: up they were buying. I was not aware that Carvona
- 4:36Speaker 5: did that. But in the Charleston area and maybe not
- 4:41Speaker 5: all areas, but there's not a drop office. They come
- 4:44Speaker 5: and pick your car up. So it was the dollar
- 4:47Speaker 5: map they had arrived at. There was a four hundred
- 4:49Speaker 5: dollars charge for them to come and get the car.
- 4:52Speaker 5: I was approximately six hundred dollars higher than Carvon. If
- 4:55Speaker 5: you had a four hundred dollars there, you know, it's
- 4:57Speaker 5: a thousand dollars wow.
- 4:59Speaker 4: And so I bought your car. And it was immediately right.
- 5:02Speaker 5: After that, I get a text from a customer in
- 5:07Speaker 5: Kanas City. He had heard me on the radio, asked
- 5:11Speaker 5: me to call him. I called him a week conversed
- 5:14Speaker 5: back and forth. He was telling me his situation about
- 5:17Speaker 5: a vehicle he had, and I said, why don't I
- 5:19Speaker 5: just come up there? So the next morning I drove
- 5:22Speaker 5: to his house. Really nice guy, I retired to educator.
- 5:25Speaker 5: He had a vehicle that he was wanting to sell
- 5:27Speaker 5: and did not want to go through Let's say all
- 5:31Speaker 5: the hoops you have to go through with dealing and
- 5:33Speaker 5: especially with strangers. For his particular reason, he was not
- 5:37Speaker 5: able to leave the house because he was a caregiver.
- 5:40Speaker 5: So I went to him and we sat and talked,
- 5:44Speaker 5: and within all thirty minutes, I was writing the check,
- 5:48Speaker 5: shaking his hand and you know, taking this car.
- 5:52Speaker 4: And that's what I do.
- 5:53Speaker 5: I make a lot of house calls.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I'm one on one.
- 5:56Speaker 5: I go to people's house. There's circumstances that they don't
- 5:59Speaker 5: want strangers. And I don't think I'm a stranger in
- 6:01Speaker 5: this valley.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I'm pretty well known.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Most people know who's either knows by boys or knows
- 6:07Speaker 5: who I am. And that's what I try to put
- 6:11Speaker 5: up on.
- 6:11Speaker 4: People is that I'm local. I'm here.
- 6:14Speaker 5: If there's ever a problem, I'm back.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I got a call.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Yesterday from the State tripper, but retired state tripper haven't
- 6:21Speaker 5: seen Jeff in well quite a few years. He was
- 6:25Speaker 5: asking me about a situation with a car and that evolved.
- 6:28Speaker 4: In with a friend of his.
- 6:31Speaker 5: We talked for a nine fifteen minutes.
- 6:33Speaker 4: It was good to hear from him, and.
- 6:35Speaker 5: The information was free and we you know, we carried
- 6:39Speaker 5: on a conversation about automobiles and other things and That's
- 6:43Speaker 5: what I tried to stress on people. You don't have
- 6:46Speaker 5: to you don't have to feel guilty about asking me questions,
- 6:50Speaker 5: and you're not going to do business with me. I
- 6:52Speaker 5: do business with everybody.
- 6:54Speaker 4: And whether it's me giving you.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Free of a boss, or me buying your car or
- 6:59Speaker 5: attempting to buy your car, you're going to walk away
- 7:02Speaker 5: more pleasant. You are trying to talk to a stranger,
- 7:06Speaker 5: exchanging emails, maybe not even understand the language that you're hearing,
- 7:11Speaker 5: And that's not.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Going to happen with many every week I hear in
- 7:15Speaker 2: preparation for our show, I just go digging around a
- 7:18Speaker 2: little bit lightly on the Internet with some keywords that
- 7:21Speaker 2: I search for that have to do with you know,
- 7:23Speaker 2: like different industries that surround similar to what you do.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And the horror stories are a plenty out there, just
- 7:30Speaker 2: like what you talk about. Even when a transaction goes right,
- 7:33Speaker 2: you're looking at delays in well, when's somebody going to
- 7:36Speaker 2: make it out to actually get you your money?
- 7:39Speaker 3: When are they actually going to pick up the vehicle?
- 7:40Speaker 2: What happens if there are some sort of a paperwork
- 7:44Speaker 2: miscommunication in the midst of all this, and and something
- 7:48Speaker 2: comes back on you all of these things come up
- 7:50Speaker 2: with folks that are trying to use what amounts to
- 7:53Speaker 2: apps on their phone or something to conduct business locally.
- 7:57Speaker 2: When you have a case by case, but you have
- 8:00Speaker 2: a solution here locally where you can do something like
- 8:02Speaker 2: that and maybe not have to put up with all that.
- 8:04Speaker 2: You don't have to You don't have to put all
- 8:06Speaker 2: of your information out online for people to be able
- 8:08Speaker 2: to get. You don't have to worry about what the
- 8:10Speaker 2: terms of service say to see if oh, by the way,
- 8:13Speaker 2: if I allow you to contact me about purchasing my car,
- 8:16Speaker 2: you can also sell my data to other people that
- 8:18Speaker 2: can contact me, which is something else that happens. I mean,
- 8:21Speaker 2: you get into this infrastructure and this system of folks
- 8:25Speaker 2: that are trying to solicit you for business, and suddenly
- 8:27Speaker 2: your name's out there and everybody's calling you, and it's
- 8:30Speaker 2: something you have to fend off constantly and worry about
- 8:32Speaker 2: your privacy and different things like that. Dealing with it
- 8:34Speaker 2: on a local level really resolves a lot of those issues.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Well, this is how secure I am with my information.
- 8:42Speaker 5: It's one on one, it's.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Paper, it's not paper less, so.
- 8:47Speaker 5: I secure paper.
- 8:49Speaker 4: It goes into.
- 8:50Speaker 5: A lock foul cabin and your information will never be
- 8:53Speaker 5: shared as secure as website can be. I tell you
- 8:57Speaker 5: I received a leather last I deal with h I,
- 9:04Speaker 5: M G. And Huntington is where my physician is. Well,
- 9:09Speaker 5: I guess their database got breached and my all my
- 9:12Speaker 5: health information is now exposed. And I got a letter
- 9:16Speaker 5: you know, sharing that with me. Well, there's nothing I
- 9:18Speaker 5: can do about. I mean, whoever whoever has it has
- 9:22Speaker 5: whatever they do with it, they do with it. I
- 9:25Speaker 5: don't know how intense this is other than they're alerted,
- 9:30Speaker 5: they learned me, and I'm sure a few thousand others.
- 9:34Speaker 5: But that information that you give someone, if they if
- 9:37Speaker 5: it's not if it's paperless, it could be traced and
- 9:40Speaker 5: it can be hacked. And you're not going to have
- 9:43Speaker 5: that with me. The information that that that I have
- 9:46Speaker 5: to seek, which is very very little, basically a little
- 9:49Speaker 5: piece of identity, and you know your title, You're I'm
- 9:52Speaker 5: going to exchange a check for it, and I'm going
- 9:55Speaker 5: to remove the vehicle from your premise.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Your business I do. I used to do a lot.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Of liquidations in business, not so much anymore, but I'm
- 10:04Speaker 5: still able.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Out there to do that.
- 10:07Speaker 5: It's just where I set myself separate. It's one on
- 10:10Speaker 5: one and I'm on your time. I'm on your clock.
- 10:13Speaker 5: I went to Spencer h six weeks ago, and I
- 10:16Speaker 5: was kind of pressed for time because I was going
- 10:19Speaker 5: on a vacation, but so were they, and they had
- 10:21Speaker 5: two vicals and then Spencer is a ninety minute trip up,
- 10:25Speaker 5: ninety minute trip bike and you know, and we had
- 10:28Speaker 5: to do the paperwork. We pretty much on talking on
- 10:34Speaker 5: the phone determine the valuation in the car. Though I
- 10:37Speaker 5: had not seen either one, and quite some time I
- 10:40Speaker 5: was familiar with who they were in the cars, but
- 10:43Speaker 5: you know, sometime and went by and I hadn't seen them.
- 10:46Speaker 5: So I drove up a couple of drivers. Kelly took
- 10:49Speaker 5: as took me in, Runnie my mouse up and we
- 10:52Speaker 5: were able to make her whole bring the vehicles bake,
- 10:57Speaker 5: and she didn't have.
- 10:58Speaker 4: To worry because one.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Of the involved the death of her father, which happens,
- 11:02Speaker 5: you know, and the other one was her personal car,
- 11:05Speaker 5: and she was deciding to buy a new car whether
- 11:08Speaker 5: I trade, and you know, as I talked to her,
- 11:11Speaker 5: I said, look, you're much better off. It's letting me
- 11:14Speaker 5: buy these cars. Then you have real money. Not pay
- 11:18Speaker 5: per money, real money, not an allowance or on a
- 11:21Speaker 5: deal sheet saying we're going to allow you this much money.
- 11:24Speaker 4: This is real money.
- 11:25Speaker 5: You can take that money and do with it what
- 11:27Speaker 5: you want. And that's the separation between trade allowance and
- 11:31Speaker 5: actually selling your car. And I think people gets lost
- 11:36Speaker 5: in the weeds from that, saying well they're going to
- 11:38Speaker 5: give me, Well, no, they're going to allow you.
- 11:40Speaker 4: They're not giving you.
- 11:41Speaker 5: They're allowing you that number want a trade assistant against
- 11:46Speaker 5: their new or pre own car. But if you flip
- 11:50Speaker 5: the coin around and say, okay, tell you what, I've
- 11:52Speaker 5: decided not to buy your car, but pay me what
- 11:56Speaker 5: you just show me for your car or for my car,
- 11:59Speaker 5: and you probably will not receive a check.
- 12:03Speaker 2: That's right, because that's because that's not the way that
- 12:06Speaker 2: they move the numbers around. That's not the way they
- 12:07Speaker 2: want the numbers moved around.
- 12:09Speaker 5: No, And unfortunately, there is so many websites out there,
- 12:14Speaker 5: and you can get this chat GPT.
- 12:16Speaker 4: I believe I've.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Pronounced it right. You can Google. You can put the
- 12:20Speaker 5: description of your car in and it will give you
- 12:23Speaker 5: an evaluation. And that's all it is is evaluation. I
- 12:27Speaker 5: tell you what I did there after, I bought this
- 12:29Speaker 5: last car that they were thinking about selling to Carbon.
- 12:33Speaker 5: I had never really explored Carbon's platform. Well own a
- 12:40Speaker 5: personal vehicle. I bought it new and it has a
- 12:44Speaker 5: civilian plate on it, and I've talked about before. It's
- 12:48Speaker 5: a thirteen model to knowledge and it's been a one
- 12:51Speaker 5: It's a one owner garage cat. It's a very very
- 12:54Speaker 5: very nice figal. So I went out, I snapped my
- 12:59Speaker 5: license and sent to Carvon and went down through the
- 13:03Speaker 5: platform and answered the questions just to see the number
- 13:08Speaker 5: that they were going to send me. Now I realize
- 13:11Speaker 5: it's my bit, so you know, it's probably worth more
- 13:16Speaker 5: to me than anybody. But I'm a car guy. I
- 13:18Speaker 5: understand the valuations, and regardless of who owns it, it's
- 13:22Speaker 5: only worth so much. I believe by the figure they
- 13:28Speaker 5: sent me, they were about twenty five hundred dollars light.
- 13:33Speaker 5: But they can't take in consideration that Larry Dawson's owned
- 13:37Speaker 5: this vehicle, service this vehicle, kept it in the garage,
- 13:41Speaker 5: non smoker, nontent and every five thousand miles the wheels
- 13:45Speaker 5: are bounced, all changed in they to sticker. That's how
- 13:49Speaker 5: anal I am with his vehicle. Because I want to
- 13:51Speaker 5: last that. You know, GMC, the dollies are very expensive,
- 13:56Speaker 5: so I've kept it. And evaluation they gave me was
- 14:00Speaker 5: ninety seven hundred dollars for this fig And you can
- 14:04Speaker 5: look at you know, you can look at different websites.
- 14:07Speaker 5: I was just trained to compare it. Once again, I
- 14:10Speaker 5: think they were somewhere north of two thousand dollars wrong.
- 14:13Speaker 5: When it's vehicle, but they cannot see the car, they
- 14:18Speaker 5: cannot evaluate the car, and they can't talk to you
- 14:21Speaker 5: because they want to do it on their platform. Now,
- 14:23Speaker 5: if I'd go to Larry Dawson's house and meet Larry
- 14:26Speaker 5: Dawson and see that vehicle and see the pristine conditions in.
- 14:31Speaker 4: That, I would know how to evaluate the car.
- 14:34Speaker 5: Or you could go to someone's house and let's say
- 14:37Speaker 5: it's sitting outside, the tires are marginal, and it may
- 14:40Speaker 5: have a chip in the windshield, and maybe it has
- 14:43Speaker 5: an odor inside and maybe a little hand of our scratchroom.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Then they were right. Their number was right. And I
- 14:51Speaker 5: think the people that use car von or other sites
- 14:55Speaker 5: that they do not physically see the car might be
- 14:58Speaker 5: shorten them themselves, especially if they have put a lot
- 15:02Speaker 5: of effort into maintaining and keeping that car is in
- 15:07Speaker 5: good condition as they can. Not all can do that.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Not all does that. Trust me.
- 15:13Speaker 5: I got there and look at some cars and I think, oh,
- 15:15Speaker 5: my goodness. But I do respect people that goes to the.
- 15:19Speaker 4: Extra mile to try to get longevity.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Out of their vehicle by maintenance it and keeping it
- 15:25Speaker 5: clean and keeping it free of debris and doing all
- 15:28Speaker 5: the things that you and I used to do to
- 15:30Speaker 5: our cars in can As City when we cruise cans cities.
- 15:34Speaker 5: And so you can't see that, you know, you're you're
- 15:37Speaker 5: answering a question your form and it's a standard for
- 15:40Speaker 5: you know, do you have both Keith Hobbs, Yes, you know?
- 15:43Speaker 5: Has it ever been racked?
- 15:44Speaker 4: Though?
- 15:45Speaker 5: Those things you can you can visualize, but you can't
- 15:48Speaker 5: see the results of it without physically looking at And
- 15:53Speaker 5: I'm sure without adapt that four hundred dollars feet that
- 15:56Speaker 5: they go up there, not every car do they go
- 15:59Speaker 5: after they bring back. I mean, I'm sure they've opened
- 16:02Speaker 5: doors and expected that this is the car scribe but
- 16:07Speaker 5: you're gonna pay the four hundred dollars fee because they're there.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's very true. And one of the things that
- 16:13Speaker 2: I think that you bring up and is absolutely true.
- 16:16Speaker 2: We know for a fact that when people, you know,
- 16:18Speaker 2: like if you go to the Kelly blue Book site
- 16:20Speaker 2: and you're just selecting on your car, everybody overestimates what
- 16:24Speaker 2: kind of shape that their car in their car is
- 16:26Speaker 2: in generally speaking, generally speaking, and Carvana probably and these
- 16:29Speaker 2: other national companies probably take that into account when they're
- 16:33Speaker 2: giving you your their off the cup of prades or
- 16:35Speaker 2: they're like, well, you claim that this car is in
- 16:37Speaker 2: great condition. What we've seen over time is that that's
- 16:39Speaker 2: not really true. So, like you said, you got lowballed,
- 16:42Speaker 2: you know, twenty five hundred three thousand dollars or something
- 16:44Speaker 2: along those lines, because you know that you keep your
- 16:46Speaker 2: car in pristine condition. They don't see cars in that
- 16:49Speaker 2: kind of condition all that often. So, especially if you're
- 16:52Speaker 2: somebody that actually takes care of your vehicle, like people
- 16:54Speaker 2: don't necessarily do anymore, you're probably going to get shorted
- 16:56Speaker 2: a lot on that because people don't see cars that
- 16:58Speaker 2: have their tires rotated on a regular basis, that has
- 17:01Speaker 2: the oil cheams when it's supposed to have, when it
- 17:03Speaker 2: has all the meeting it's done when it's supposed to have.
- 17:05Speaker 3: That's kind of a unicorn. In today's age, that's true.
- 17:09Speaker 5: And once again you're right. You get penalized for doing
- 17:13Speaker 5: that because it comes at a cost and you're not
- 17:17Speaker 5: receiving I think the real benefit of your labor. And
- 17:23Speaker 5: in today's society, we're kind of in a funny period
- 17:28Speaker 5: in our economy. I mean, if you talk to most people,
- 17:31Speaker 5: we're stressed. Inflation's going and it all Wou's say, it's rapid,
- 17:36Speaker 5: but it's.
- 17:37Speaker 4: And the family out there today and their.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Budget is being really really squashed. And your automobile, your second.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Or your third, or.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Or fourth that's sitting there, you can turn it into dollars,
- 17:52Speaker 5: and especial to your local you can turn it in
- 17:55Speaker 5: dollars very quick by calling me and as you drive around.
- 18:00Speaker 5: The thing that I've stressed most is when.
- 18:03Speaker 4: You're when you're evaluating your car, do.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Not because it has nothing to do with what your
- 18:10Speaker 5: car's worth. It's what your payoff is it has. That
- 18:15Speaker 5: is not how you evaluate a car. It's about what
- 18:18Speaker 5: you owe. And this is a simple example that I
- 18:21Speaker 5: tell people. I said, well, what if you didn't know anything,
- 18:25Speaker 5: your car is still worth you know, a value, and
- 18:28Speaker 5: if you owe you know if you owe.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Twenty thousand dollars or in ten.
- 18:31Speaker 5: Thousand dollars car, that does not make your car a
- 18:34Speaker 5: twenty thousand dollars car. Then that's when I've spend it
- 18:38Speaker 5: around on what if you didn't know anything. You have
- 18:40Speaker 5: to look at the valuation the car of what the
- 18:43Speaker 5: value is, and just because you may have a negative equity,
- 18:49Speaker 5: that's still a very doable deal. I mean, I've set
- 18:52Speaker 5: people down and explained to them today's payments may run
- 18:58Speaker 5: seven eight hundred to one thousand dollars, and you're making
- 19:01Speaker 5: that payment for whatever reason you've decided you want to
- 19:03Speaker 5: sell your car, and you might have a three or
- 19:06Speaker 5: four five thousand dollars negative equity situation with it doesn't
- 19:12Speaker 5: take too many of those payments. If you take the analogy,
- 19:16Speaker 5: I'm not going to lose that money, I'll just keep it. Well,
- 19:18Speaker 5: you're going to lose that money. You're gonna lose it
- 19:20Speaker 5: one month at a time, and you're better off. Is
- 19:24Speaker 5: saying Okay, I'm gonna make preparations to take this negative
- 19:29Speaker 5: equity and put it in a different type of loan
- 19:32Speaker 5: and make that payment most of the times a whole
- 19:35Speaker 5: lot less because you're not financing thirty or forty fifty
- 19:39Speaker 5: thousand dollars. You're just financing the two or three four
- 19:42Speaker 5: thousand dollars of negative equity. That's pretty easy to squeeze in.
- 19:47Speaker 5: You know, you go from an eight hundred dollars payment
- 19:50Speaker 5: that you're negative or and d.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Loans of value.
- 19:55Speaker 5: You're better off selling that vehicle and have a five
- 19:58Speaker 5: thousand dollars or a four thousand dollar what's called a
- 20:01Speaker 5: personal loan, a credit card loan, an equid line loan
- 20:04Speaker 5: where you can make it one hundred or two hundred
- 20:06Speaker 5: dollars month payment. We're still just make the same payment
- 20:09Speaker 5: because in about four or five months it's going to
- 20:11Speaker 5: be over right, instead of that eighty four you know,
- 20:15Speaker 5: eighty four months to Nancy that a lot of people
- 20:17Speaker 5: gets involved, and I understand you make an emotional decision,
- 20:21Speaker 5: you get it. It's all news, a brand news. Well,
- 20:25Speaker 5: about month number thirty, that eight hundred to one thousand
- 20:28Speaker 5: dollars payment gets hold and you might realize that's not
- 20:33Speaker 5: the vehicle that you.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Really really needed.
- 20:37Speaker 2: And you need to find a way out of that.
- 20:38Speaker 2: There's only so many ways that you can do it.
- 20:40Speaker 2: And you give counsel on these types of situations. And
- 20:43Speaker 2: like you said, not every situation might work with that,
- 20:46Speaker 2: but there's a lot of them that do. And you
- 20:48Speaker 2: would be surprised. People would be surprised on how they
- 20:49Speaker 2: can work out from under a negative equity situation to
- 20:54Speaker 2: actually benefit themselves in the long run.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Well, trading it is not the option that you want
- 20:59Speaker 5: to that. I see people and hear people who I'll
- 21:02Speaker 5: just trade it. Well, that four or five thousand dollars
- 21:05Speaker 5: that you have negative equity.
- 21:07Speaker 4: You just rolled into a new line.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Extended it on top of the vehicle you just purchased,
- 21:13Speaker 5: and now you are more negative. And if you really
- 21:17Speaker 5: want out, I tell people jokingly, I said, if you
- 21:21Speaker 5: want out of jail, there's one way.
- 21:23Speaker 4: To get out.
- 21:23Speaker 5: You got to pay to get out.
- 21:25Speaker 4: And once you're out, you're free. It's over.
- 21:27Speaker 5: You know, you'll feel a lot.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Better about it.
- 21:30Speaker 5: It doesn't feel real good going in, but once it's over,
- 21:33Speaker 5: you no longer.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Have to deal with It's that's very true, and sometimes
- 21:39Speaker 2: it's sort of the band aid method that you can
- 21:41Speaker 2: rip it off and maybe put yourself in a little
- 21:43Speaker 2: better situation.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Well, today's world.
- 21:49Speaker 5: Impulse kicks in. They make it so easy to either
- 21:54Speaker 5: you know a buy or sale. You can get on
- 21:56Speaker 5: these websites and they'll bring you a car. There is
- 21:59Speaker 5: so many things that will happen and can happen really
- 22:02Speaker 5: before you know it and realizes. And I think I
- 22:07Speaker 5: give advice to young people is wait seventy two hours
- 22:12Speaker 5: and see if you really really have the same thoughts
- 22:15Speaker 5: toward that purchase as you did seventy two hours ago.
- 22:18Speaker 5: If if you just get paused for three days and
- 22:22Speaker 5: you don't even have to think about it, just see
- 22:24Speaker 5: if you still have that same want in about three days,
- 22:28Speaker 5: it might co off a little bit where you realize that,
- 22:32Speaker 5: you know, maybe I don't need that night out of
- 22:34Speaker 5: all my favor And that's you know, that's one piece
- 22:38Speaker 5: of a height I try to give younger people. You know,
- 22:41Speaker 5: as older people, we're methodical and we think about it
- 22:44Speaker 5: and we pretty much walked in and you know, we
- 22:47Speaker 5: know where we're going to go. That impulse against the
- 22:51Speaker 5: gratification seems to let's lose that does as we age somewhat.
- 22:57Speaker 3: I have a text message that came in.
- 22:59Speaker 2: This is from the reason of four five four one
- 23:02Speaker 2: Larry and your experience if a car that I'm looking
- 23:05Speaker 2: to purchase is thousands of dollars less than I would
- 23:08Speaker 2: expect it to be and the person is claiming there's
- 23:10Speaker 2: nothing wrong with it.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Would that raise a red flag for you?
- 23:13Speaker 5: Oh it pays three red flags?
- 23:17Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, there, I mean.
- 23:20Speaker 5: When you're looking at automobile, that once again evaluation. Most
- 23:24Speaker 5: people knows what they can spend and the market they're
- 23:29Speaker 5: looking at, because the instant response that you can get
- 23:35Speaker 5: by Google's or the Cali's or the nadas and it
- 23:39Speaker 5: can put you into ballmark. It can't define it, but
- 23:41Speaker 5: it can give you close and yes, if there's a
- 23:44Speaker 5: there's a reason that car is thousands of dollars less.
- 23:48Speaker 5: And I had when I was in business selling on
- 23:53Speaker 5: a day to day basis, I encouraged customers because I
- 23:56Speaker 5: would tell him, I said, look, I have a service
- 23:58Speaker 5: department down there. This is all we've done to it.
- 24:01Speaker 5: But you don't have to take my word for it.
- 24:04Speaker 5: Go to your local mechanic, take it, spend one hundred
- 24:08Speaker 5: dollars and that will answer all your questions. And if
- 24:11Speaker 5: I was right, then it's well worth your your one
- 24:15Speaker 5: hundred dollars or your seventy five dollars or whatever they're
- 24:17Speaker 5: going to charge you to.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Look the big gol over.
- 24:20Speaker 5: But you come back, you're going to find out that
- 24:23Speaker 5: what you want to do and you're going to not
- 24:26Speaker 5: have surprises. And that's the thing that people runs into.
- 24:30Speaker 5: It's cheap, and it's cheap for a wreath. That check
- 24:33Speaker 5: engine light is on for a reas you know people,
- 24:36Speaker 5: so that's this check engine light. Yes, but the check
- 24:39Speaker 5: engine light is worn for a reason. It might be
- 24:43Speaker 5: not a costly reason. And most people I have found
- 24:46Speaker 5: they said, well, it's been on for I mean, I've
- 24:49Speaker 5: heard this so many times. It's been on forever.
- 24:52Speaker 4: It doesn't infect running the car.
- 24:53Speaker 5: Well, it's on for a reason. The other thing that
- 24:56Speaker 5: I used to hear is you get in an automobile,
- 25:00Speaker 5: air's not blowing real cold. It's just kind of a loop.
- 25:03Speaker 5: They go, it just needs charged. It's one hundred degrees outside.
- 25:07Speaker 5: If that car just need a charge, you want to
- 25:10Speaker 5: have charged today? Yeah, because nobody wants to ride around
- 25:14Speaker 5: in a car that's got very warm air condition. When
- 25:19Speaker 5: we say air and it's just needs to charge because
- 25:23Speaker 5: that's a relative will play inexpensive six.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Sometimes it seems like that that these traditional issues that
- 25:33Speaker 2: for a long time that were used to be in
- 25:35Speaker 2: you know, like your air conditioners just needs charge and
- 25:37Speaker 2: different things along those lines. First of all, that happens
- 25:40Speaker 2: less and less these days. They need charge less and
- 25:42Speaker 2: less than what they used to back in the day,
- 25:43Speaker 2: So it's a little bit more unusual than what it
- 25:45Speaker 2: used to be. And sometimes as an indicator of other
- 25:47Speaker 2: issues that's going on with the vehicle. And it's not
- 25:49Speaker 2: just something as simple as the coolint is a little lower,
- 25:53Speaker 2: whatever it might be. There's oftentimes other issues with especially
- 25:57Speaker 2: it seems like with the blowers and the dash and
- 25:59Speaker 2: stuff like that of these cars. A lot of times
- 26:01Speaker 2: these days they get miss a line. Different things happened
- 26:03Speaker 2: to it. You have to be aware of those things.
- 26:05Speaker 4: Well.
- 26:06Speaker 5: Cabin filters is very important this time of year, when
- 26:10Speaker 5: it is very hot and that vehicle is running at
- 26:15Speaker 5: Mike's with capacity and you're pushing it through a filter
- 26:19Speaker 5: called a cabin filter and it has debrist, you will
- 26:23Speaker 5: be surprised how many people at that cabin filds. Hey,
- 26:27Speaker 5: they don't know what it is, and b they've.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Never changed it.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Dell, if you want to take a break, I just

- 29:42Speaker 2: Well, we have about eight minutes left in the hour,
- 29:45Speaker 2: and just in the nick of Tom and Studio, Larry
- 29:47Speaker 2: Dawson joins us love in person now in studio and
- 29:51Speaker 2: made it through that traffic accident that's on sixty four
- 29:53Speaker 2: coming eastbound.
- 29:54Speaker 3: I guess traffic is starting to move a little bit
- 29:56Speaker 3: through there.
- 29:56Speaker 10: Anyway, was it was that they were the head car
- 29:59Speaker 10: up the roll back as I came through, And it's
- 30:02Speaker 10: in between Oakwood and Montrose. You know, I think I've
- 30:06Speaker 10: been here since two and I believe one time during
- 30:10Speaker 10: a snowstorm, but this is the first time due to
- 30:13Speaker 10: a wreck. I normally leave Windfield a little early, which
- 30:16Speaker 10: I did today and I hit this. The traffic backed
- 30:21Speaker 10: up right as I came across the bridge between Dunbar
- 30:24Speaker 10: and Institute. No Dunbar and it Dunbar's South Charleston, so
- 30:30Speaker 10: it was it must have been quite a wreck. I
- 30:32Speaker 10: only saw one vehicle. I hope everybody's safe. I hope
- 30:35Speaker 10: there was no no injuries, but it was it was
- 30:38Speaker 10: quite a wreck.
- 30:40Speaker 2: So Larry Lastin's here for the next few minutes. You
- 30:42Speaker 2: can get in on the text line if you have
- 30:43Speaker 2: a question for Larry threeserre four nine three five five
- 30:45Speaker 2: zero zero eight. You can give us a call real quick.
- 30:47Speaker 2: If you went to as Well three zerre four three
- 30:48Speaker 2: four five fifteen fifty eight three four five fifteen to
- 30:50Speaker 2: fifty eight. Wrapping up the text message that we got
- 30:53Speaker 2: from the three zero four five four one.
- 30:55Speaker 3: This was.
- 30:57Speaker 2: The person was talking about that the car was a
- 30:59Speaker 2: couple of thousand dollars less than what they thought that
- 31:03Speaker 2: it should be on line, and that raised some red
- 31:05Speaker 2: flags for him. The other part of that that they
- 31:07Speaker 2: thought was interesting equation is that the seller has a
- 31:09Speaker 2: third party representa so it's not a company, it's a
- 31:13Speaker 2: private person that is representing them as a seller. And
- 31:17Speaker 2: I've never really heard of that before outside of a
- 31:20Speaker 2: couple of situations. That seems a little I mean, I
- 31:23Speaker 2: know people are from maybe trying to protect their privacy
- 31:25Speaker 2: a little bit, but also that seems a little.
- 31:27Speaker 11: They're flipping a car, probably jumping the title.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Yeah that makes sense. Yeah, yeah, that makes sense.
- 31:33Speaker 10: When you are buying off the street, buy or beware,
- 31:39Speaker 10: you make sure that person you're buying a car from
- 31:42Speaker 10: is the person's name that is on a title. Don't
- 31:46Speaker 10: buy this in someone else's name that has their signature.
- 31:50Speaker 10: That is called an open title. And the seller is
- 31:54Speaker 10: trying to jump that title without paying sales tax. There
- 31:57Speaker 10: might be the two thousand dollars right there. Yeah, didn't
- 32:00Speaker 10: have to pay the sales tax on it. And that's
- 32:04Speaker 10: and once again, don't go down a rabbit hole because
- 32:06Speaker 10: it's cheap or a bargain. You make sure because if
- 32:09Speaker 10: you ever have a problem, you're actually buying that car
- 32:13Speaker 10: third party from the person that has possession of the title,
- 32:19Speaker 10: but the title is not in their name. They might
- 32:22Speaker 10: have the automobile and they might have a piece of
- 32:25Speaker 10: paper that's a title to that car, but if their
- 32:28Speaker 10: name is not on the front of it, that title
- 32:31Speaker 10: does not belong to them. I don't care if they're
- 32:34Speaker 10: great uncle handed to them. You need to go to
- 32:37Speaker 10: the DMV, pay the sales tax, put it in your name,
- 32:41Speaker 10: and then if you're going to sell it, you sell
- 32:43Speaker 10: it that way or the buyer. You make sure you
- 32:45Speaker 10: do that because that liability lays up on the person's name.
- 32:51Speaker 10: The title is in it is still in their name.
- 32:54Speaker 10: Just because they signed the back of it, does it
- 32:57Speaker 10: not mean that they sold it. I got involved in
- 33:00Speaker 10: a situation and I told years ago on this show
- 33:04Speaker 10: on A and Or, and it was set up to
- 33:09Speaker 10: me that was my uncle, and he went and put
- 33:13Speaker 10: it in his name and I bought it. Now the
- 33:15Speaker 10: title was in his name. Well come to find out
- 33:19Speaker 10: his uncle that he had excuse me, his uncle that
- 33:22Speaker 10: he said he had. It was a domestic lover's quarrel.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Oh quote unquote Uncle, yes, yes.
- 33:29Speaker 10: And the party that on the other side of the
- 33:34Speaker 10: and Or went and got a title made. And so
- 33:38Speaker 10: when I got the title, it was superseded. In other words,
- 33:43Speaker 10: the title had been made, a duplicate title had been made,
- 33:46Speaker 10: and the title he had was don void. And the
- 33:50Speaker 10: person went and put it in their name reported as stolen.
- 33:54Speaker 11: Oh my and I sold a car.
- 33:58Speaker 10: So when I started unwhy that, and got my insurance
- 34:01Speaker 10: company involved, then we started figuring out what happened. Basically,
- 34:05Speaker 10: it was it a domestic dispute. One took the car,
- 34:09Speaker 10: and the other one, to protect themselves, went and got
- 34:12Speaker 10: a title because it said and Or did not need
- 34:15Speaker 10: the other person, and put it in their name solely.
- 34:18Speaker 10: So now the car belongs to subject A. Well, Subject
- 34:24Speaker 10: B is selling to me because they are on the
- 34:26Speaker 10: old title following me because the title was and Or.
- 34:31Speaker 10: It'd be like Dale and Larry and you and I
- 34:33Speaker 10: have a quarrel, and I take the car and you're
- 34:36Speaker 10: afraid I'm gonna go sell it. You go straight to
- 34:38Speaker 10: the DMV and put it in Dell's name. Well, Larry's
- 34:41Speaker 10: signing his side of it to a title. This non
- 34:45Speaker 10: void because it's been superseded by a new title.
- 34:48Speaker 11: How do you know that.
- 34:50Speaker 10: I mean, I'm pretty good, matter of fact, I think
- 34:52Speaker 10: I'm an expert in some things. Well this one got
- 34:55Speaker 10: by me.
- 34:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, why wouldn't it. I mean, that's one of
- 34:57Speaker 3: those situations there.
- 34:58Speaker 10: I had the driver's life since I had him, I mean,
- 35:01Speaker 10: I had everything you needed.
- 35:02Speaker 11: I sold a vehicle.
- 35:05Speaker 10: Fortunately they were understanding. On the other side. I went
- 35:08Speaker 10: to my insurance company. They made me whole and they
- 35:10Speaker 10: started unwinding it. And that's what happened. Actually, it had
- 35:14Speaker 10: to go to court to get a judge ruling for
- 35:18Speaker 10: the insurance company to get another title to supersede all
- 35:23Speaker 10: the other titles that had been produced so they could
- 35:26Speaker 10: be made whole to pay me. I mean, it was
- 35:28Speaker 10: very complicated. I went to the hearing and subject A
- 35:32Speaker 10: showed up at the hearing. But the judge ruled favorably
- 35:37Speaker 10: as far as the insurance company, because I was made
- 35:40Speaker 10: whole and I stored the car for the insurance company
- 35:43Speaker 10: for a year. But that's a complicated case. There it
- 35:47Speaker 10: might set of presents. I had never heard of it,
- 35:49Speaker 10: but it can happen, and it you know, if it
- 35:52Speaker 10: happened to me, it can happen to you. It just
- 35:56Speaker 10: I won't say it got by me. I don't know
- 35:58Speaker 10: what precautions I could have taken because of the word
- 36:01Speaker 10: and or.
- 36:02Speaker 2: It just got caught on something along those lines. And
- 36:05Speaker 2: I'll just mentioned this as we kind of wrap up here.
- 36:07Speaker 2: One of the reasons that you contact Larry and help
- 36:10Speaker 2: get help shepherd through one of these things. If you're
- 36:12Speaker 2: looking to sell a vehicle, it's because of these reasons.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Because sometimes the inconvenience is more than just the money
- 36:17Speaker 2: off the matter too, you know. I mean, money is
- 36:19Speaker 2: a thing, but sometimes it's I mean we're talking about
- 36:21Speaker 2: somebody's transportation, somebody's vehicle, and sometimes that gap that you
- 36:25Speaker 2: get there, all the money in the world isn't going
- 36:27Speaker 2: to make somebody whole if suddenly they can't get to
- 36:29Speaker 2: work and they can't use a vehicle.
- 36:30Speaker 11: Let me tell you one other thing that I have
- 36:33Speaker 11: suggested strongly to grandparents and parents and loved ones and
- 36:37Speaker 11: all this that's going to buy.
- 36:40Speaker 10: Their loved one that is young maybe eighteen nineteen a
- 36:45Speaker 10: car they're going to right to check. Put a lean
- 36:48Speaker 10: on it. Protect yourself. Sometimes the child might go right
- 36:53Speaker 10: or wrong. You know in life they can go wrong
- 36:56Speaker 10: and you just handed them a clear title. But if
- 36:59Speaker 10: you're a lean on it, at least you can protect
- 37:02Speaker 10: what they do with that vehicle.
- 37:03Speaker 2: It's a great information from Larry Dawson. Larry Dawson, he
- 37:05Speaker 2: still buys cars. Three zero four five four five zero
- 37:08Speaker 2: two one one. Three zero four five two five zero
- 37:10Speaker 2: two one one. Larry will see you buy care in.
- 37:12Speaker 3: A couple of weeks.
- 37:12Speaker 11: I'll make it this time.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Larry Dawson.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Three zero four five two five four five zero two
- 37:17Speaker 2: one one have
