- 0:14Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, welcome, welcome.
- 0:17Speaker 2: It is time now for car Talk with Brad Dunchas
- 0:21Speaker 2: brought to you by the Dunge's Family of Bontos. Brad,
- 0:23Speaker 2: good to have you back and you brought friends. I
- 0:25Speaker 2: am back, yes, then, I'm glad to be here. Hello.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Friends.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I'm sorry I just dropped a bunch of stuff I
- 0:31Speaker 2: could have been happens. Yeah, I was just got back
- 0:35Speaker 2: in town. This week. We went to Columbus to see body.
- 0:38Speaker 1: He goes to school at a college out there in
- 0:41Speaker 1: rural Ohio, a few miles from Columbus. It was great
- 0:43Speaker 1: to see him as he finishes his freshman year in college.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It's great, but it seems like it stopped raining for
- 0:51Speaker 1: a minute, hopefully, and it's May finally. So that's baseball
- 0:56Speaker 1: in Bartlesville and you get the Indians going again and
- 0:59Speaker 1: they'll be the Dungeus Toyota Indians for the first time ever.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Now it's that we've usually been Dunge justs Ford Indians,
- 1:06Speaker 1: but with the rebranding, we're kind of going to take
- 1:10Speaker 1: the team in a different direction. But that's exciting. It's
- 1:14Speaker 1: our eighty fourth year sponsoring that team. In a row,
- 1:17Speaker 1: which is really special. And it was an inspiration of
- 1:21Speaker 1: my father's, our grandfather's and my friend here today, Adam
- 1:25Speaker 1: Pratt Salo Adam, Hello, welcome to the show. And you
- 1:30Speaker 1: had an inspiration a few years ago about building some
- 1:33Speaker 1: trails out at Hudson Lake. I know it had been
- 1:35Speaker 1: talked about for several years, back about ten years ago,
- 1:39Speaker 1: but you actually brought it to fruition.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I did. It took about a year.
- 1:46Speaker 1: About a year of talking and planning or tell me
- 1:51Speaker 1: about that inspiration and what the beginning was like.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I had kind of started slowly into mountain biking, uh huh,
- 1:58Speaker 3: and I got more and more interesting in it, and
- 2:02Speaker 3: I always had to travel somewhere right Tall Sir or Claremore.
- 2:08Speaker 3: And so I decided we need trails around here and
- 2:14Speaker 3: out of lake cuts. And there's a lot of city
- 2:16Speaker 3: property all the way around it.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It's beautiful country too.
- 2:19Speaker 3: It's pretty out there, it's remote and it's quiet, and
- 2:22Speaker 3: so it's a perfect place to build trails. And so
- 2:26Speaker 3: it slowly worked with the city. Had to go to
- 2:30Speaker 3: the city council meeting, I had to go to a
- 2:34Speaker 3: park boarder meeting. I had to go back to the
- 2:35Speaker 3: city council had to get a contract signed with Oklahoma Mountain.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Bike Association to protect the city a little bit and
- 2:45Speaker 1: a liability.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And after it took a year to get all that done,
- 2:51Speaker 3: and then in April of twenty twenty two were cutting trails.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Cutting trails had so and it must a bit taken
- 3:00Speaker 1: more than you and I know, building trails is quite
- 3:04Speaker 1: a process. Huh. Yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I'm fortunate. I got some people that really help out,
- 3:10Speaker 3: that's great. And I have another retired gentleman that helps
- 3:15Speaker 3: me with everything. And I have another gentleman that's a
- 3:19Speaker 3: rock layer. And so you can.
- 3:21Speaker 1: See now there's some alors out there on the trails. Yeah, no,
- 3:25Speaker 1: that's it is a rocky country we live in, so
- 3:28Speaker 1: Stage County is yeah, that's it makes for some challenges
- 3:32Speaker 1: for people on their bikes and they're not used to it.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I suppose it is a you know, I like you,
- 3:38Speaker 1: I've been increasing my mountain biking through the years.
- 3:42Speaker 2: My family always.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Went to Cresty, but Colorado, and there's great mountain biking
- 3:46Speaker 1: culture there that started in the eighties and and so
- 3:49Speaker 1: I was kind of aware of it and would do
- 3:51Speaker 1: it up there. But there, you know, to get to Arkansas,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I didn't really think Turkey Mountain was worth the
- 3:58Speaker 1: trip all the time.
- 3:59Speaker 2: But it's a nice place to ride and stuff.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But thank you so much for building one around here
- 4:04Speaker 1: so that I can just go on the weekend too.
- 4:07Speaker 1: It's been a great pleasure for me to discover it
- 4:10Speaker 1: and then to hear to get to meet you and
- 4:12Speaker 1: hear your story, I think is awesome. It's a great
- 4:15Speaker 1: I appreciate you having me. Well sure, well we'll talk
- 4:18Speaker 1: more about that in a few minutes. It is great.
- 4:20Speaker 1: If you guys don't know that are listening out there,
- 4:22Speaker 1: it's out on Lake Hudson. We're just a few miles
- 4:25Speaker 1: northwest of Bartlesville, out past the airport, and it's a
- 4:29Speaker 1: it's a beautiful area if you've not been out there,
- 4:32Speaker 1: and it's as you said, it was approved by the city.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And I know you've got a lot of other partners
- 4:40Speaker 1: and people helping you do that. And maintaining trails is
- 4:43Speaker 1: a lot of it too, right, be NonStop here with
- 4:46Speaker 1: the grass starts grill, uh huh, yeah, And I'm sure
- 4:50Speaker 1: with all the rain and stuff that brings other challenges.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Right. So, so a couple of days ago we went
- 4:57Speaker 3: out and looked at the trails on the east side,
- 5:00Speaker 3: and there is water running down the trails, and water
- 5:02Speaker 3: and places I've never seen before. Yeah, and so we
- 5:06Speaker 3: post on our Facebook page that the trails are closed.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yeah. So if that's how you find out if they're closed,
- 5:14Speaker 2: the best way is to.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Look, right, either I have to go out and look,
- 5:17Speaker 3: or I have another volunteers lives only three miles away. Okay,
- 5:21Speaker 3: and you know he can if he doesn't know already,
- 5:24Speaker 3: he could just pop over and take a look at him.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Well, and did the point there is you don't want
- 5:28Speaker 2: to damage to the trail.
- 5:30Speaker 3: And exactly if you're if you're have too much foot
- 5:33Speaker 3: traffic or bicycle traffic on the wet, muddy trail, and
- 5:38Speaker 3: the trail widens out.
- 5:41Speaker 2: And kind of defeats the purpose.
- 5:43Speaker 3: And then you have more erosion, and after a while
- 5:46Speaker 3: it's just like a just a muddy, eroded rut. So
- 5:52Speaker 3: we're always working to try to prevent that.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Awesome. Well, we did.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Go from everybody about a few other things and some
- 6:02Speaker 1: stuff we have in common.
- 6:03Speaker 2: But you used to be an auto technician, so I
- 6:06Speaker 2: want to call that out. You know, car business is
- 6:08Speaker 2: important my family.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Right so yeah, I worked on cars and Chevroty dealership
- 6:14Speaker 3: for twenty five years. Awesome, and then my wife talked
- 6:19Speaker 3: to me in retiring and so I had to have
- 6:22Speaker 3: something to do.
- 6:23Speaker 2: This was your inspiration.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Then I see that my retirement plan right in the
- 6:26Speaker 1: bike and it probably started a long time ago.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I know.
- 6:30Speaker 1: For me, it really goes back to when I was
- 6:31Speaker 1: a kid on the bike and going to the places
- 6:34Speaker 1: in the freedom it gave me back then.
- 6:36Speaker 3: And that's a great thing about mountain biking, is you
- 6:39Speaker 3: are a kid. Yeah, it says what's behind the next turn,
- 6:42Speaker 3: which will pass the next the next hill. Yeah, watch
- 6:46Speaker 3: out for that rock.
- 6:47Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:48Speaker 2: It is really challenging. And you built some trails out
- 6:51Speaker 2: there that are technical enough. I think not all of
- 6:54Speaker 2: them are really technical, but.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Between the rocks and some of the hills, especially on
- 7:00Speaker 1: that Blue Mountain Trail that yes, that can be. And
- 7:07Speaker 1: I'll switch back there as you're going up. Is I've
- 7:11Speaker 1: only made it up that a couple of times.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it's hard to get up and stay on your
- 7:16Speaker 3: bike the entire.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Way, Yes it is, but that's for those of you
- 7:20Speaker 1: who haven't done that. That's one of the challenges is
- 7:22Speaker 1: to is to do that. It's not a problem if
- 7:25Speaker 1: you can't. I always thought it was kind of a
- 7:27Speaker 1: good sign that you were righting the right stuff and
- 7:30Speaker 1: that you need to keep working on it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: All right, Well, well, it is a great thing you've done.
- 7:38Speaker 1: There another I saw you brought a jersey from the
- 7:42Speaker 1: from the Tulsa Wheelman, which goes way back.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Let's show it to the folks who were.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Watching on on Facebook there that this is a Dungeus
- 7:50Speaker 1: brothers Ford Superstore Tulsa Wheelman bike jersey. And this goes
- 7:56Speaker 1: back to the when we're what era is this the nineties?
- 8:00Speaker 3: I guess I got this jersey like in.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and my father was a dedicated biker. He loved
- 8:08Speaker 1: to run marathons and ride bike and do triathlons, and
- 8:12Speaker 1: he sponsored the Wheelman for several years. And and that's
- 8:17Speaker 1: that's great to see. And so you can see all
- 8:19Speaker 1: the pinholes from the listeners on Yeah in the ol
- 8:22Speaker 1: BD that's that's our brand.
- 8:25Speaker 2: It was up here in Bartlesville.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's awesome, very cool, and we love to sponsor
- 8:33Speaker 1: things like that, I think, and your inspiration is what
- 8:35Speaker 1: got me to get you on the show.
- 8:37Speaker 2: It's kind of the theme of the show.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It seems like it's leadership and inspiration those changes in
- 8:42Speaker 1: life and as you went through and retiring and all
- 8:45Speaker 1: of a sudden you had to find something to do.
- 8:48Speaker 3: It is it's been a full time project for both
- 8:51Speaker 3: of us.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Revie your wife, I introduced Reva welcome Hello.
- 8:56Speaker 2: It must have you kept him busy with us or
- 8:59Speaker 2: change in career.
- 9:00Speaker 4: More than I thought. Because he first came up with this,
- 9:03Speaker 4: I didn't realize how much I would be involved in the.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Project as well. He's doing all the physical stuff.
- 9:09Speaker 4: I helped behind the scenes.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I saw you were helping post and some of the
- 9:13Speaker 1: closed trail messages, and I.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Managed the Facebook page. And then there's an app called
- 9:18Speaker 4: trail Bot.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Okay, well we also post when the trails played, and
- 9:22Speaker 2: that's really important.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I mean, because, like you mentioned, you've got a relationship
- 9:26Speaker 1: with the Oklahoma Mountain Bike Group.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I don't remember their official Mountain Bike Associations.
- 9:30Speaker 1: And Bike Association, and you need to have these the
- 9:34Speaker 1: trail accessible to people. So you do that through these
- 9:38Speaker 1: apps and things, because because people are searching for these
- 9:42Speaker 1: I think in areas.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And they've started to come up.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I know we have one over in Ponca City now
- 9:48Speaker 1: and are in Clarmore too, these trails that have been
- 9:51Speaker 1: built by people, and it's it's pretty awesome that we're starting.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it is built with hand tools, not machines.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Yeah no, And now tell tell us a little bit
- 10:05Speaker 2: about that process. What do you do first? You've got
- 10:07Speaker 2: to first identify where you want it to go.
- 10:10Speaker 3: So the first thing I do is is I see
- 10:13Speaker 3: how suitable it is for a trail. I'm building the
- 10:17Speaker 3: trails to the International Mountain Bike Association guide, okay, and
- 10:22Speaker 3: they're big on eros and control. So on a on
- 10:26Speaker 3: a steep hill side, the only one, the most of
- 10:30Speaker 3: a grade that you want is a ten percent grade, okay.
- 10:34Speaker 3: So first thing I do is I just look a
- 10:37Speaker 3: look at the whole area, kind of get an idea
- 10:40Speaker 3: how water flows on it, and then that dictates how
- 10:44Speaker 3: I start to mark the trail. And then first of
- 10:47Speaker 3: all we just we just put bright ribbons.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Do you try to stay in the water flow or
- 10:53Speaker 2: out of it?
- 10:54Speaker 3: Try to stay out of it and try to minimize
- 10:58Speaker 3: our our distance where water could be flowing. I think
- 11:01Speaker 3: on a hillside, water's on to float no matter what,
- 11:05Speaker 3: so I want to minimize it and make the shortest
- 11:08Speaker 3: shortest runs possible.
- 11:11Speaker 1: And the trails out on the east Side are really
- 11:15Speaker 1: great because they're loops and people can can kind of
- 11:19Speaker 1: go the distance they want and if they want to
- 11:21Speaker 1: come back, they can take a slightly different route and
- 11:24Speaker 1: make a big loop or figure or do eights and stuff.
- 11:28Speaker 3: You've got to look at the whole picture, and you
- 11:30Speaker 3: got to look at the just the area around the
- 11:33Speaker 3: trail you want to build and make sure there's no
- 11:36Speaker 3: water issues or steep drop offs or anything like that.
- 11:42Speaker 3: And then I'll mark the trail we proposed trail with
- 11:46Speaker 3: ribbons and then we come through with weat eaters and
- 11:52Speaker 3: mowers to clear a trail. And then once we've have
- 11:57Speaker 3: that done, then foot traffic and bike traffic will creep
- 12:00Speaker 3: it camp down.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Does the rest Now? Is there maintenance to get it
- 12:04Speaker 1: open for the year anything? It's kind of never closed.
- 12:07Speaker 1: As I said, No, the trail lives forever as long
- 12:10Speaker 1: as we keep using it.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and out there, if we quit riding it today
- 12:18Speaker 3: within the end of the summer, you probably wouldn't be
- 12:20Speaker 3: able to see it.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:22Speaker 1: And you started, i know on the east side, and
- 12:26Speaker 1: to build a lot of trails up most of the
- 12:28Speaker 1: east side, and then you've now got a few on
- 12:31Speaker 1: the west side.
- 12:34Speaker 2: When did all that start in twenty two? You said,
- 12:36Speaker 2: so you were building in twenty three.
- 12:38Speaker 3: And well, we started building the spring of twenty two.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Spring of twenty two, okay, And then how did you
- 12:45Speaker 1: get when did the stuff on the west side start?
- 12:48Speaker 3: The west side started all the spring of twenty.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Four A couple last year, okay, And is there I
- 12:58Speaker 1: saw you had built maybe a new spur off of
- 13:01Speaker 1: the top of Blue Mountain.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Area, So yeah, there's there's a little.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Plans to expand the trail a little more.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Well, originally we wanted to go all the way around,
- 13:12Speaker 3: but the issue with that is it's a mile and
- 13:15Speaker 3: a half from the from the dam up to here
- 13:20Speaker 3: and by the and we can we can drive on
- 13:23Speaker 3: city property up to here on the on an old
- 13:28Speaker 3: dirt road, but past that is privately owned and I
- 13:33Speaker 3: don't have permission to go on any of the privately
- 13:35Speaker 3: loaned areas, all right, And so currently you can drive
- 13:41Speaker 3: up to here if you have a four wheel drive,
- 13:43Speaker 3: and then you can you can take the trail to
- 13:48Speaker 3: get up to this part of the lake. But then
- 13:51Speaker 3: once we're up to here, we're pretty well stuck because
- 13:54Speaker 3: this is a stream flows quite a bit and right
- 14:00Speaker 3: which it's flowing now more than you can cross.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so i'd take bridges and defensive.
- 14:08Speaker 4: It could take a bridge similar to the bridge of
- 14:11Speaker 4: the Canyon Pathfinder, right, it could.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Take something like that.
- 14:16Speaker 2: So well maybe someday, but.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Maybe someday, and it would it would require a lot
- 14:22Speaker 3: of money.
- 14:22Speaker 2: For bridges, yeah, and.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I'm talking possibly, you know, up to a million, and
- 14:30Speaker 3: bridges were a little more a crossings. Wow, So that's
- 14:32Speaker 3: some serious fund really, that is.
- 14:34Speaker 1: That's that's I think we probably better start small like
- 14:37Speaker 1: you have and and just keep building it. And because
- 14:40Speaker 1: in the long run, it's going to kind of take it,
- 14:42Speaker 1: you know, build over time, and more and more people
- 14:44Speaker 1: will use it. I see, you know people as I
- 14:47Speaker 1: really started last after we got back from Colorado last summer,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and I was like, I don't want to stop this
- 14:53Speaker 1: and the Pathfinder only hand does so much for you,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you know, And so I started going out there with
- 15:00Speaker 1: my wife who likes to paddleboard, so she usually does
- 15:03Speaker 1: that and and I go for a ride and started
- 15:07Speaker 1: exploring it and it's been a great, great time.
- 15:11Speaker 2: And uh, you know, I think.
- 15:13Speaker 1: I'm excited to get back out there when this when
- 15:16Speaker 1: the it dries out just a little bit yere and
- 15:19Speaker 1: there's you know, as we've got tons of stuff going
- 15:22Speaker 1: on around town.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I want to take just a moment to remind everybody.
- 15:26Speaker 1: This weekend we've got the Straight Cat Custom Car Show
- 15:29Speaker 1: going and Dewey this is a big show. They'll have
- 15:32Speaker 1: all the old cars around town this weekend. It's it's
- 15:35Speaker 1: so cool to see see them, and they're great, great vehicles.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Lots of really cool hot rides and.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Music and fun out there.
- 15:45Speaker 1: The Farmers Market opens this weekend to next weekend, We've
- 15:49Speaker 1: got Elder Cares, the Good, the Bad, and the Barbecue
- 15:51Speaker 1: and Sizzland Summer series swinging to spring after that, and
- 15:55Speaker 1: pretty soon it'll be SunFest and and on with the
- 15:58Speaker 1: baseball I mentioned earlier. I talked to John last night.
- 16:02Speaker 1: He was out at the dealership and we were planning
- 16:05Speaker 1: some of the stuff for the season and getting the
- 16:08Speaker 1: schedule organized and going to have a Dungeus Night this year,
- 16:13Speaker 1: and I know UKWO and will have their little night
- 16:16Speaker 1: traditionally and.
- 16:18Speaker 2: We give away Kevin's money. Do you have away Kevin's money?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Hopefully you can get it all this time.
- 16:23Speaker 1: It seems very difficult, but we're excited for baseball to
- 16:28Speaker 1: kick off again, and there are lots of other stuff
- 16:30Speaker 1: coming as we get going. At the dealership this week,
- 16:33Speaker 1: we got a vehicle that would be great for trail building.
- 16:36Speaker 1: It's a Tacoma Trail Hunter. It's the first of this
- 16:39Speaker 1: new trim level we have, so it's got some pretty
- 16:43Speaker 1: cool stuff lifts and a special suspension on it. It's
- 16:48Speaker 1: got a special four x four with a trail mode
- 16:50Speaker 1: where it goes it can, it goes extra extra well
- 16:54Speaker 1: on trails. And it's the guys in the shop we're
- 16:58Speaker 1: all admiring it yesterday and sending pictures to their wives
- 17:01Speaker 1: wanting to buy it.
- 17:03Speaker 3: So it'd make it up.
- 17:04Speaker 2: They would make it all the way.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I'm pretty certain that treacherous road yeah is yes, I've
- 17:10Speaker 1: seen that, and yeah, I think the trail Hunter would
- 17:13Speaker 1: be good. Pretty soon later this year we should have
- 17:15Speaker 1: a trail Hunter four runner for all new fore Runner
- 17:19Speaker 1: that we're still just they're just trickling in right now
- 17:22Speaker 1: and this for May. Kicking off May, we had a
- 17:27Speaker 1: strong April. I ended up about one hundred and fifty
- 17:30Speaker 1: percent of last year in our new vehicle sales, but
- 17:33Speaker 1: the region and you know, everything is just selling really
- 17:37Speaker 1: fast in Toyota World. We call it turn rate, and
- 17:41Speaker 1: over seventy percent of the vehicles on the ground are
- 17:44Speaker 1: in the pipeline sold in the month of April.
- 17:46Speaker 2: So it's a really fast turning environment right now.
- 17:49Speaker 1: And people are still asking lots of questions about tariffs,
- 17:53Speaker 1: and it keeps evolving a little bit. We you know,
- 17:56Speaker 1: I think, as Toyota said, they don't plan to raise prices.
- 18:00Speaker 1: They want to keep building all their vehicles and shipping
- 18:02Speaker 1: them and I expect that to continue.
- 18:04Speaker 2: That seems like a really good plan.
- 18:06Speaker 1: So you know, it is you know, it's a kind
- 18:09Speaker 1: of people ask me, is it a good time to
- 18:11Speaker 1: buy or not. I don't know that it's there's any
- 18:13Speaker 1: great magic to that. It should be on based on
- 18:16Speaker 1: your needs, but you know, certainly there are you know,
- 18:19Speaker 1: prices have not really gone up yet at all. The
- 18:21Speaker 1: used car market is kind of rising. Used car values
- 18:25Speaker 1: have gone up and are strong right now. So on
- 18:28Speaker 1: the one hand, you'll get more for your trade than
- 18:30Speaker 1: you might have a little while ago, or and that
- 18:32Speaker 1: could but you know that likely continues. So I don't
- 18:37Speaker 1: know if I'm a good gnosticator on that stuff or not,
- 18:40Speaker 1: but people sure are asking about it.
- 18:42Speaker 2: It's it's very topical right now.
- 18:47Speaker 1: The other thing, you know, we'd had some Price Tower
- 18:50Speaker 1: news recently. I you know, folks, many folks know, I
- 18:53Speaker 1: was the chairman of the nonprofit. They're in there for
- 18:57Speaker 1: for a couple of decades at the end, and it's
- 19:01Speaker 1: I think good news that the McFarland group, it looks like,
- 19:04Speaker 1: will be the ones that end up owning the tower.
- 19:07Speaker 1: They're the ones who developed the Mayo Hotel and the
- 19:10Speaker 1: Triangle Building in Pasca, and I think they understand protecting
- 19:16Speaker 1: a historic building like what the Price Tower is.
- 19:19Speaker 2: They've reached.
- 19:21Speaker 1: They've worked with the frankly Right Building Conservancy to respect
- 19:25Speaker 1: that easement that's there, that that thank goodness, Pete and
- 19:30Speaker 1: everyone made it, made sure that easement was in place.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I think that's been really critical and we'll we'll stand
- 19:38Speaker 1: the test of time to help protect the tower.
- 19:41Speaker 2: And make sure that it really can be a resource
- 19:43Speaker 2: for us.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I you know, I know those of us who have
- 19:46Speaker 1: invested a lot of time and effort into that have
- 19:48Speaker 1: been you know, really it's been a difficult time here
- 19:52Speaker 1: as we've watched it be closed and not be accessible
- 19:55Speaker 1: to people. But you know, let's hope that in the
- 19:57Speaker 1: in the near future maybe we'll be able to go
- 20:00Speaker 1: in there again and and uh and uh take advantage
- 20:04Speaker 1: of that great resource and landmark really in our community.
- 20:11Speaker 2: So go on, I want to go.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Back to Adam and the Barsville Trails at Hudson Lake.
- 20:18Speaker 1: You know, I think one question I had was how
- 20:21Speaker 1: where does this go going forward? I know it's an
- 20:23Speaker 1: inspiration of yours. We need to somehow build some kind
- 20:28Speaker 1: of way to keep make sure it stays maintained and
- 20:32Speaker 1: you know that it keeps going, uh to the you
- 20:34Speaker 1: know for a long time.
- 20:37Speaker 2: How do we do that?
- 20:43Speaker 3: I'll be the first admit that I need more volunteers.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and so what do you have work days and things?
- 20:51Speaker 2: Have you tried?
- 20:51Speaker 3: We have had a few work days, they've they've had
- 20:54Speaker 3: a pretty good turnout. I need to have more of them. Yeah,
- 20:59Speaker 3: I've like to extend this down a little bit more
- 21:04Speaker 3: from the from the upper end, and just it's it's
- 21:07Speaker 3: almost hard to ask people to come out and walk
- 21:12Speaker 3: a mile and a half carrying a weed eater in
- 21:14Speaker 3: a in a shovel.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I could see that.
- 21:19Speaker 3: The walk back.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to somehow get you know, you need
- 21:23Speaker 1: to get people out there first of all to enjoy it,
- 21:26Speaker 1: and then they'll want to help.
- 21:27Speaker 3: I think, right, I need to improve my efforts there.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Well, that's why we had John.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I know this takes your inspiration, but it really takes
- 21:35Speaker 1: it's going to take the whole community to keep it
- 21:37Speaker 1: going and those all of us who are interested in it,
- 21:41Speaker 1: and that's I wanted to help help help with that. Certainly,
- 21:45Speaker 1: maintaining the trail and keeping it going will be super
- 21:48Speaker 1: important to.
- 21:49Speaker 4: One thing he's guilty of is you wake up and
- 21:52Speaker 4: it'll be a nice day and I think I'll go
- 21:54Speaker 4: work on the trails and he'll call, you know, one
- 21:57Speaker 4: or two guys to see if they can come out
- 21:59Speaker 4: and help. And you know he needs to plan ahead
- 22:03Speaker 4: with work days.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Yeah, non supplement it with the with your with your efforts.
- 22:08Speaker 1: But I do think that, you know, just thinking about
- 22:10Speaker 1: how they do it up in Cresty. But where they've
- 22:12Speaker 1: got their club is from the eighties, so it's one
- 22:15Speaker 1: of the first mountain bike clubs I think in the world.
- 22:17Speaker 1: They claim to be the first, but that toll it
- 22:22Speaker 1: does take. They do spring and fall days. Where they
- 22:26Speaker 1: do they really gather everybody. They they eat they you know,
- 22:30Speaker 1: they do, they get they get a mass of people
- 22:32Speaker 1: who use the trails. They are people typically who use
- 22:36Speaker 1: the trails, but they managed to attract a good group
- 22:40Speaker 1: and it has allowed them to expand the trails and
- 22:43Speaker 1: keep them, keep them built and well maintained for a
- 22:47Speaker 1: long time. Of course it's a tourist destination and there's
- 22:49Speaker 1: lots of folks there, but yeah, kind of different from here,
- 22:52Speaker 1: but we have we are our visitors and.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Visitors on the trail all the time.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's not just for mountain bike. It's a
- 23:00Speaker 1: great place to walk and really I see lots of
- 23:04Speaker 1: families out there and people just moving around. It's right
- 23:08Speaker 1: by the lots of great views of the lake and
- 23:13Speaker 1: it's really a pretty country.
- 23:16Speaker 4: That's what point out.
- 23:17Speaker 3: It's good for all ages too.
- 23:18Speaker 4: I mean can ride on those trails probably up to
- 23:23Speaker 4: Blue Mountain. I don't want to tackle Blue Mountain that
- 23:27Speaker 4: and people can hike while someone.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Else rides and it's and you know the good thing
- 23:31Speaker 1: about mountain biking too is it's not really that fast
- 23:34Speaker 1: and so we're not those bikes are you know, we'll
- 23:38Speaker 1: yield to the pedestrians and we all kind of work together,
- 23:40Speaker 1: and it tends to kind of be a nice community
- 23:45Speaker 1: out there.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And you don't need to worry about the bikes that much.
- 23:48Speaker 2: If you see us.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Laying in the dirt, just make sure we're okay.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Everyone's plight and everyone's clean, and I don't have to
- 24:00Speaker 3: worry about them throwing any trash out.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I haven't seen trails.
- 24:05Speaker 3: And when we're out mowing, we'll sometimes find trash. And
- 24:13Speaker 3: so it's really a nice place to be whether you're
- 24:16Speaker 3: riding or walking it.
- 24:19Speaker 1: And so I mentioned how to get out there, but
- 24:22Speaker 1: you pretty much just go on out to the east
- 24:26Speaker 1: side of the airport on Sunset and and there's signs
- 24:31Speaker 1: from there.
- 24:34Speaker 3: At the intersection of Sunset and and they cut some
- 24:39Speaker 3: road and then there's another brown sign at the entrance
- 24:43Speaker 3: to that. They cut some park, anutter brown sign. As
- 24:48Speaker 3: you come into the park, there's a split in the road.
- 24:51Speaker 3: One goes right up to.
- 24:52Speaker 2: The right up to the hill to the where the
- 24:54Speaker 2: archery area is. For those who know where that is.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'll hit the city up for another sign
- 25:04Speaker 3: for the west side.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Here shortly, is there more expansion area over the area.
- 25:11Speaker 3: On the west side, there is plenty of expansion area.
- 25:15Speaker 3: So this is if this map is on the City
- 25:19Speaker 3: of Artisville website. Okay, everything in the dark green is
- 25:23Speaker 3: city property. Okay, Okay, So our trails on the west side,
- 25:28Speaker 3: we're up and here there's there's more room up here.
- 25:31Speaker 3: It's a tough hillside.
- 25:32Speaker 1: There's some elevation there and this is all hillside up here,
- 25:42Speaker 1: and we can probably work down to.
- 25:46Speaker 3: To Butler Creek. But like I say, at that time,
- 25:50Speaker 3: you're getting ways away from the car. Yeah, and it's
- 25:53Speaker 3: hard to get up there to maintain.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I know that would be more difficult area that's
- 25:58Speaker 2: heap to get to.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:59Speaker 3: And then so Butler Creek, it's a fairly large stream.
- 26:03Speaker 3: It flows quite a bit at times, uh huh. And
- 26:06Speaker 3: so that's one of the areas where we'd have to
- 26:09Speaker 3: have a little water crossing a bridge, which would take money.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 3: I think it's possible to raise that kind of money. Yeah,
- 26:17Speaker 3: And I think at one time our vest and in
- 26:22Speaker 3: the city were talking about it.
- 26:24Speaker 1: So well, there was an effort. I'm one of the
- 26:26Speaker 1: Roy Pemberton, who was one of our employees that the
- 26:28Speaker 1: dealership was a bountain biker to work for me, and
- 26:31Speaker 1: he was really into trying to get some trails started
- 26:34Speaker 1: out there back in the mid three teens, and there
- 26:37Speaker 1: was they had I think a foundation interested at one point.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I don't know whether they ever made it very far
- 26:43Speaker 1: in that process.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Just you remember fat to our bike shop, they had
- 26:48Speaker 3: a proposed route on their wall down there, and then
- 26:53Speaker 3: they were part of you know, they had committed some
- 26:55Speaker 3: money to it. Yeah, but it just for some reason
- 26:57Speaker 3: it just all fell apart and and so then installed
- 27:01Speaker 3: out again.
- 27:04Speaker 1: And so well, thank you for picking it back up
- 27:06Speaker 1: and getting it started, and and uh, you know, I
- 27:10Speaker 1: encourage everybody to head out there as the as it
- 27:13Speaker 1: drives out this spring and explore out there, go for
- 27:17Speaker 1: a hike or go for a mountain bike ride. You
- 27:20Speaker 1: you really don't need any special equipment all that much.
- 27:23Speaker 1: I'd wear a helmet and gloves are helpful.
- 27:27Speaker 3: And wear bugspray, yeah, and stay on the trail.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Yes, that's always important in these environments.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Best tick prevention there is, or tigger prevention there is, stay.
- 27:38Speaker 2: On the trail, keep moving on your bike.
- 27:42Speaker 3: And because how ticks survive is they they live in
- 27:47Speaker 3: the grass and the brush and when you brush up
- 27:49Speaker 3: against the brush, they stick to.
- 27:51Speaker 2: You, they're gonna jump.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and so we'll keep them mode best that we
- 27:56Speaker 3: can stay on the trail.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Well, thanks, thank you again for your inspiration on the trail.
- 28:02Speaker 1: It's great to have you on the show. You and
- 28:04Speaker 1: Revi welcome you to anytime you want to come. Tell
- 28:07Speaker 1: us what's going on. And for sure I'll be watching
- 28:10Speaker 1: the facebook page and people can look for the Barsville
- 28:13Speaker 1: Trails at Hudson Lake facebook page and get more information,
- 28:16Speaker 1: ask questions.
- 28:18Speaker 2: There's ways to donate money.
- 28:21Speaker 1: If you're interested through the Oklahoma Mountain Bike Association, and
- 28:26Speaker 1: I know that you'll probably get some people checking it
- 28:30Speaker 1: out here later today. All right, great, thanks again for
- 28:33Speaker 1: being on the show and to all of you listening.
- 28:35Speaker 1: It's great to be here in May, and we'll see
- 28:38Speaker 1: you around town as we get started in this busy

- 28:51Speaker 2: And where can we find you, Brad.
- 28:53Speaker 1: We'll be out here on the Highway seventy five at
- 28:55Speaker 1: nineteen eleven southeast Washington Boulevard.
