After a 21-year legal battle, Oklahoma has reached a landmark settlement with six major poultry companies for nearly $44 million, resolving a decades-long pollution crisis in the Illinois River. The case, which began in 2005, held the companies liable for dumping excessive chicken litter into the watershed. Now, Tyson, Cargill, George’s, Peterson Farms, Cal-Maine, and Simmons Foods agree to fund environmental cleanup, install vegetative buffers to filter runoff, and gradually reduce litter removal from chicken houses.
