Latest / Health with Hashimoto’s - Thyroid or Immune Education for Autoimmune Thyroid Disease / Using the Hashimoto's thyroid or immune framework for yourself ⎸ Ep. 211
Transcript
- 0:00So over the last 200 and something episodes, I've been talking about Hashimoto's
- 0:04as two different things.
- 0:05There's the thyroid portion and there's the immune portion.
- 0:08And in the last, I don't know, 10, 15 episodes, I've been more explicit about
- 0:12this two different system framework.
- 0:15Today, let's explore what it's like to use that framework for yourself.
- 0:20Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition. That means your immune system is attacking
- 0:23your thyroid. But knowing that is only the beginning.
- 0:27This summer series is built in three phases. Phase one was understanding what's
- 0:31happening in your body. Phase two is learning how to think about what you're learning.
- 0:35And phase three is building your own personal discernment framework with support.
- 0:41So most women with Hashimoto's have a lot of information.
- 0:44What they're missing is a filter, a way to evaluate what applies to them specifically.
- 0:50That is what this series is now designed to give you.
- 0:53If you want to start with a foundation, check with the show notes for Hashimoto's
- 0:57Decoded, new name, Hashimoto's Decoded, Thyroid or Immune.
- 1:01In less than one hour, I will walk you through the most common root causes and
- 1:05help you identify where to focus.
- 1:07My name is Esther Yunkin. I'm a registered nurse, holistic health educator,
- 1:10and the host of this podcast, Health with Hashimoto's.
- 1:13I believe your health is a blend of five interconnected areas,
- 1:17body, mind, spirit, diet and environment. Let's work through this together.
- 1:22So let's go back in time to when I first got my diagnosis.
- 1:26So if you haven't listened to episode, I think it's episode two, maybe three is my story.
- 1:30And in summary, I had this horrible like eczema rash, but it wasn't eczema.
- 1:36And I had it for a couple of different winters. It was getting worse.
- 1:38I went to my chiropractor to do some allergy testing.
- 1:41Like what is causing this? And she looked at me, did an evaluation.
- 1:45She's like, I think it's your thyroid. Did some labs.
- 1:48My labs came back that my thyroid numbers were borderline. I did not need any
- 1:52medication, but my antibodies were up. And she said, you have Hashimoto's.
- 1:57So then I had to dive into all of the information. What is Hashimoto's?
- 2:02Because again, if you've heard my story...
- 2:05Four years of nursing school, 17 years in the ER, went back to school for holistic health education.
- 2:10You could stop me on the street and ask me about virtually anything related
- 2:15to diseases, body processes, things going wrong, health goals, anything.
- 2:21And I could tell you body, mind, spirit, diet environment, a little bit about
- 2:26what was going on and some initial steps.
- 2:29Because that was my passion, helping people with their health.
- 2:32But one thing that it always, always, always confused me, was the thyroid.
- 2:36Like different things go up and others go down and your TSH is like way high,
- 2:41but that means you're hypo, like you don't have enough. What is going on? I was always confused.
- 2:46So when I first got my diagnosis, I knew two things.
- 2:50I knew there was a thyroid component. After all, Hashimoto's full name is Hashimoto's
- 2:56thyroiditis. It is inflammation of the thyroid.
- 2:59I also knew that it was an autoimmune condition. So I knew there was an immune component.
- 3:04I have been talking about this for 200 and something episodes,
- 3:08that there are two different systems in the.
- 3:13In this scenario. You have your thyroid bucket, you've got your immune bucket.
- 3:17Over the last, you know, 10 or 15 episodes, I've been more explicit about that
- 3:21divide because I want you to see Hashimoto's in this framework.
- 3:27And when you're thinking about your next thing, I want you to be thinking,
- 3:31okay, what is related to my thyroid? What does my thyroid need right now?
- 3:35And what is related to my immune system?
- 3:37What does my immune system need right now? What is one small thing I can do
- 3:41today or this week or this month to help my overall health, the whole person,
- 3:48body, mind, spirit, diet, environment, looking at it
- 3:52in those two different buckets, the thyroid bucket and the immune bucket.
- 3:55So back when I got my diagnosis, I was looking at those two different things.
- 3:59I was looking at the thyroid bucket. I looked at the labs, figured those out.
- 4:04My husband was able to help me. He's also a nurse.
- 4:07And so approaching the thyroid bucket, you know, I see my labs, they're borderline.
- 4:11I look at the ingredients that my thyroid needs in order to do its job well.
- 4:16I think I made one adjustment in one of my supplements.
- 4:19Other than that, I really didn't deal with the thyroid bucket very much because
- 4:24I was more focused on the immune side of the two different systems.
- 4:29Obviously, there was an attack going on on my thyroid.
- 4:32And I wanted to slow or stop that attack. So I needed to focus on my immune system.
- 4:39At the time when I got my diagnosis, there was not anybody teaching root causes.
- 4:45Not at least that I could find easily. Yes, there were books and there were
- 4:51like video courses that I did not feel like I had time to do right then.
- 4:57I wanted something super quick that I could figure out like,
- 5:00okay, these are my root causes.
- 5:02I didn't want to have to go in for more lab testing that It cost tons of money.
- 5:06I didn't want to have to pay for a big course that was going to take me a month.
- 5:11I didn't feel good right then. I was exhausted right then.
- 5:16I wanted answers right then. And really, that's why I created Hashimoto's Decoded.
- 5:22In less than one hour, for $27, you're going to be able to get all those answers. Common sense.
- 5:29Here's the thyroid bucket.
- 5:33Here's the each. Here's what different things feel like, Hashimoto's or hypothyroid
- 5:38symptoms, hyperthyroid symptoms.
- 5:41When you're looking at the immune side, here are the most common root causes and the triggers.
- 5:45I go through all of it in less than an hour because I know that you probably
- 5:51don't want to spend a ton of time, money, or energy figuring yours out either.
- 5:56So back to my framework, I'm looking at myself, my labs, my symptoms,
- 6:02and everything that I know through these two different buckets, this framework.
- 6:07I looked at the thyroid, and then I looked at the immune system.
- 6:10I figured out the root causes.
- 6:12And for me, I was already gluten-free, although it was not my choice.
- 6:17I, you know, I struggled so hard. I did not want to go gluten-free.
- 6:22My youngest, when he was a tiny baby, had eczema head to toe,
- 6:25and he was exclusively breastfed. So I had to do an elimination diet for his sake.
- 6:31A lot of time, we won't do something for our sake, but we will for our kids.
- 6:35And that's what happened there.
- 6:36And then gluten ended up to be fine for him. But my body really appreciated that break.
- 6:42And so I can never go back to it myself.
- 6:45But I don't think, like based on that knowledge, I don't think that gluten or
- 6:50the AIP diet would have been something that I tackled right away.
- 6:54Even knowing that diet is so hugely impactful for so many people who have Hashimoto's,
- 7:01I think that I probably would have started with what I did start with.
- 7:05Even if I was eating gluten at the time, I probably would have gone to sleep
- 7:12and stress because I was so bone weary tired.
- 7:15Like I felt horrible. I was slurring my words because I was falling asleep while
- 7:21reading a book to my kids in the middle of the day. I was exhausted.
- 7:26And that was so frustrating because I was trying to get some good sleep.
- 7:31And the Hashimoto's was stealing my energy. And I was not okay with that.
- 7:35I also was pretty sure that there was a stress level component.
- 7:39Because as an ER nurse, like it takes a lot to fluster me to make me feel stressed.
- 7:45And yet stressors still happen. And even though my mind, my emotions can deal
- 7:50with stress, and like I don't, I don't feel it, it's still impacting my body.
- 7:57So those were the first two things that I looked at when I looked at my diagnosis
- 8:04and the time in front of me, like a week to a month to a year,
- 8:07like what can I work on first? How can I feel better?
- 8:12What's going on with my thyroid? What's going on with my immune system?
- 8:17And what can I tackle first? And that's what I want for you too.
- 8:20I want you to be able to know what is next.
- 8:23Like what happened to get here and what happened next.
- 8:27So I hope this like illustration of the framework and how I worked through it helps you.
- 8:33My teenage son, young adult son, he's now 19.
- 8:37He asked me the other day how my podcast was doing. And he specifically wanted to know money.
- 8:44And I turned the question back on him and I said, you asked how my podcast is doing and.
- 8:51I never said that money was my most important metric.
- 8:55Like, how are you gauging success? And he looked at me kind of like,
- 9:00why would you gauge success for anything else?
- 9:03And I explained, I started the podcast out of a need that I had,
- 9:08because there was nothing simple, clear, easy, and available right then when I needed it.
- 9:15I wanted to teach via a podcast so that anybody anywhere can learn for free.
- 9:21Every single week, you can tune in and you can learn something about your thyroid
- 9:26and your overall health so that you can feel better.
- 9:29And there's over 160,000 downloads of my podcast so far. Thank you so much.
- 9:37That means so much to me because that's my mission, is to help others through the podcast.
- 9:44And now also through Hashimoto's Decoded, as I get to take you in less than
- 9:48an hour through what took me a long time and so much frustration to be able to learn.
- 9:57That's my goal, is to be able to help you learn quickly and easily so you can
- 10:01feel like yourself again.
- 10:02There's a lot of information out there, but really there's nobody teaching you
- 10:05how to sort things, thyroid and immune, and what to do next.
- 10:09And so that is what This episode was, that's what Hashimoto's Decoded now is.
- 10:15It is what I want you to be able to do. Sort your stuff so you can easily know
- 10:20what to do next. I'll see you next week.
