- 0:55Speaker 2: along the way. This week I am chatting with Jordan.
- 1:00Speaker 2: She's a professional volleyball player and three time Olympic medalists,
- 1:04Speaker 2: including a gold from this year's Games in Tokyo. For
- 1:07Speaker 2: episode one seventy nine, she gives me the rundown of
- 1:10Speaker 2: how she got here growing up in a super small town,
- 1:13Speaker 2: guided by both of her parents to pursue and love sport.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Jordan talk to me about going overseas for volleyball, playing
- 1:20Speaker 2: in Puerto Rico and Russia, Turkey and China, and what
- 1:23Speaker 2: it was like for her to land on her first
- 1:25Speaker 2: Olympic team.
- 1:26Speaker 3: We also talk about the hurdles she's faced.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Along the way, including divorce and in navigating all that
- 1:32Speaker 2: international travel, dealing with loneliness, and learning how to be
- 1:36Speaker 2: comfortable spending more time by herself while pursuing her passions.
- 1:41Speaker 2: We also chat about what's next, and she actually takes
- 1:44Speaker 2: over the interviewing role for a little bit and asks
- 1:46Speaker 2: me a few questions, which isn't something that happens all
- 1:49Speaker 2: the time.
- 1:49Speaker 3: A huge thank you to Jordan for her time.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I had a blast recording this and after this conversation
- 1:54Speaker 2: and we'll talk about this. I may just need to
- 1:57Speaker 2: get myself an English bulldog before we get to it today.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I do want to say a huge, huge, huge thank you.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I can't say huge enough to all the hurdlers that
- 2:06Speaker 2: came out in Chicago. It was so just, I mean,
- 2:11Speaker 2: indescribable amazing. These adjectives they don't feel big enough to get.
- 2:15Speaker 3: To see some of you. Irl.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Also a massive, massive congrats to everyone that crushed the
- 2:22Speaker 2: Chicago Marathon over the weekend. I was so so happy
- 2:25Speaker 2: to be a part of it and so happy to
- 2:27Speaker 2: cheer you on as.
- 2:28Speaker 3: You conquered another hurdle.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Make sure you're following along with the show over at
- 2:33Speaker 2: Hurdle podcast.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I'm over at Emily a Body.
- 2:35Speaker 2: And if you have yet to get in on Hurdle's
- 2:38Speaker 2: new SMS texting subscription, I would love for you to

- 2:44Speaker 2: subscribing a lot of the things that you love from
- 2:47Speaker 2: the show, including regular motivation, exclusive deals, and so much more.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So to get in on that, text the word welcome
- 2:55Speaker 2: to seven three two hurdler. Again, that is texting the
- 2:58Speaker 2: word welcome to seven three two hurdler. And with that,
- 3:03Speaker 2: let's get to hurdling.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Today.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I am sitting down with Jordan Larsen. She is a
- 3:16Speaker 2: three time Olympian, a relatively new gold medal to add
- 3:21Speaker 2: to the stack, a pro volleyball player.
- 3:22Speaker 3: How you doing today?
- 3:24Speaker 4: Good? Good? Thanks for having me, Oh my.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Gosh, thank you for sitting down with me.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I don't know what to congratulate you on first, whether
- 3:31Speaker 2: it's getting married recently or this new shiny gold medal.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I know it's been a surreal month and I don't
- 3:40Speaker 1: know if I've come down yet. I've still been this
- 3:42Speaker 1: like brain fog. I'm like, what is going on? What's happening?
- 3:45Speaker 1: And yeah, it's been just so surreal.
- 3:47Speaker 4: So fun.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Congratulations on all of these awesome, awesome milestones for you
- 3:52Speaker 2: not to mention. Also we have to highlight although the
- 3:55Speaker 2: hurdlers who are listening to this cannot see Spud, but Spud,
- 3:59Speaker 2: the three year old English bulldog coming in and out
- 4:02Speaker 2: of my view, is really making this day astronomically better.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Absolutely, He's a He's a special one, aren't you.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a special one. Well, things again for your
- 4:13Speaker 2: time today. I'm so excited to get to learn a
- 4:15Speaker 2: little bit more about you. And like I said, coming
- 4:18Speaker 2: down off of a major win in Tokyo. You know,
- 4:22Speaker 2: it's interesting, right because they always say that there is
- 4:26Speaker 2: like that letdown factor or like the post wedding blues,
- 4:29Speaker 2: and not only are you maybe dealing with those, but
- 4:32Speaker 2: you're also dealing with coming back and not thinking, Okay,
- 4:36Speaker 2: Olympics are coming, Olympics are coming, Olympics are coming.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, It's it's very unique situation.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And I'm playing pro next, so like I have something
- 4:46Speaker 1: to kind of look forward to, but I still don't
- 4:48Speaker 1: know when I'm leaving what's going on. Like I'm just
- 4:50Speaker 1: in this like weird space. So uh yeah, it's it's
- 4:55Speaker 1: it's a weird, weird, weird space to be in. I
- 4:58Speaker 1: don't know how to like even describe it.
- 5:00Speaker 2: How do you navigate kind of the mental side of
- 5:03Speaker 2: things that comes with this, perhaps I would say a
- 5:07Speaker 2: little bit of like uncertainty at the moment.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I just try to be as present as I can.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And I'm lucky enough that I have a lot of
- 5:15Speaker 1: like my husband's a head coach, I have a lot
- 5:17Speaker 1: of like sports like friends, so like having conversations with
- 5:20Speaker 1: them of just trying to stay as present as I can.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Really focus on how do I keep my body healthy
- 5:26Speaker 1: still and and that's just my biggest motivation at the moment.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And I am dealing with like a little bit of
- 5:32Speaker 1: an achilles thing, so trying to get that figured out.
- 5:35Speaker 1: So but I think just really honing in on being
- 5:38Speaker 1: present and yeah here as much as I can.
- 5:43Speaker 2: We'll touch back on the Achilles thing and maybe a
- 5:45Speaker 2: little bit of an injury a little bit later. But
- 5:47Speaker 2: where I'd love to uh to lead us off here
- 5:50Speaker 2: really is going back.
- 5:52Speaker 3: To your beginnings. You grew up in a really small town.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yeah, like really really small town.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Like when I looked up the population, it was like
- 6:00Speaker 3: under a thousand people.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yes, yes, very much under under a thousand and Yeah,
- 6:05Speaker 1: everybody knew everything, knew what car you drove, who your
- 6:09Speaker 1: family was, where you lived.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it was unique.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Especially now living in LA It's like, I like can't imagine,
- 6:18Speaker 1: Like I'm just like, how did I grow up there?
- 6:20Speaker 2: So if you guys think about maybe one of the
- 6:23Speaker 2: biggest takeaways that you had walking away from that kind
- 6:26Speaker 2: of small town upbringing, where would you even begin.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I that's a good question. Well, I don't know if
- 6:32Speaker 1: I've ever actually thought about that. I think the slowness
- 6:35Speaker 1: of life, you know, like they didn't it wasn't a
- 6:38Speaker 1: rush to get places. It was just like very much
- 6:41Speaker 1: like present and like, hey, in this moment, what we're
- 6:43Speaker 1: trying to do and really getting to know people. I think,
- 6:46Speaker 1: you know, having patients and everybody's different in our hometown
- 6:50Speaker 1: even and just having some grace and patience in that.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And so but yeah, that's a really good question that.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Probably came in that outlook or that perspective a little
- 7:00Speaker 2: bit handy over the last you know, sixteen eighteen months,
- 7:03Speaker 2: when we were being forced to slow down a little bit,
- 7:05Speaker 2: wouldn't you say?
- 7:06Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, No, honestly, the pandemic has been yeah amazing.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I haven't slowed down that much since, like you said,
- 7:14Speaker 1: since that time that I was living in a small town,
- 7:17Speaker 1: because I had just been on the go and trying
- 7:19Speaker 1: to you know, reach my dreams and my goals.
- 7:21Speaker 4: And yeah, definitely definitely paid off during that time.
- 7:25Speaker 2: So bring us back to Hooper, Nebraska and talk to
- 7:30Speaker 2: me a little bit about what going to school getting
- 7:35Speaker 2: involved in sport looked like for you from a young age.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, My both my parents were athletes. So my
- 7:41Speaker 1: dad actually played Division two college football, and then my
- 7:44Speaker 1: mom played in high school a little bit, but probably
- 7:47Speaker 1: could have continued to play basketball in college somewhere, but
- 7:51Speaker 1: just chose not to. And so they were very much
- 7:54Speaker 1: sport oriented. They understood that being in sport like allowed
- 7:58Speaker 1: for a lot of learning opportunity, and so I, yeah,
- 8:02Speaker 1: they just kind of threw me into a lot of
- 8:04Speaker 1: different things, and I really got a taste of what
- 8:06Speaker 1: I really wanted to do. I tried soccer, I was
- 8:08Speaker 1: in softball, I played basketball, I ran track, and so
- 8:13Speaker 1: I think having a mixture of doing all that allowed
- 8:15Speaker 1: me to really fall in love with the sport of
- 8:17Speaker 1: volleyball and that space to feel fresh and like renewed
- 8:21Speaker 1: every time I.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Came back to it.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Did you feel as though there was some sort of
- 8:26Speaker 3: an expectation put on you by having two athletic parents,
- 8:30Speaker 3: that this was something that you were definitely going to
- 8:33Speaker 3: get into, Like was there an artsy side of you
- 8:36Speaker 3: or were you like sports period, that's it.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Yeah, sports period, that's it.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I definitely my mom got she had a little more creative,
- 8:43Speaker 1: creative side, but I definitely did not get any of that.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And I was so my parents got divorced when I
- 8:48Speaker 1: was pretty young, and so my dad lived on the
- 8:50Speaker 1: farm and my mom lived in town, and so I
- 8:52Speaker 1: kind of got the best of both worlds. But being
- 8:54Speaker 1: on the farm, you know, you're out outside, you're dealing
- 8:57Speaker 1: with animals, you're I mean, I didn't deal so much
- 9:00Speaker 1: with them, like one on one, but yeah, you're outside
- 9:03Speaker 1: a lot, you're working, and so I just I feel
- 9:07Speaker 1: like I got really the best. But it was mainly
- 9:09Speaker 1: just sports, and I was all in. I just wanted
- 9:11Speaker 1: to play all the time. But I don't think expectations.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I don't think I knew how good my parents were,
- 9:18Speaker 1: or like there wasn't any talk about it, you know.
- 9:20Speaker 1: So I just was wanting to be the best that
- 9:22Speaker 1: I could be.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, and that's that's really special, though, to
- 9:26Speaker 2: start getting involved in sport and have two individuals in
- 9:30Speaker 2: your life that knew the perhaps mental tolls that could take,
- 9:35Speaker 2: the physical tolls that it could take, and really understand
- 9:38Speaker 2: where you were going in your journey.
- 9:39Speaker 1: For sure, for sure, absolutely, Yeah. And I felt like
- 9:42Speaker 1: every every turn of like or a decision that I
- 9:46Speaker 1: had to make of like hey, do I go hang
- 9:48Speaker 1: out with friends, or do I go to this you know,
- 9:50Speaker 1: speeded agility class, if it was always something that was
- 9:52Speaker 1: going to better myself or you know, put me in
- 9:55Speaker 1: a position to reach one of my goals, they were
- 9:58Speaker 1: they would kind of like navigate me towards that decision
- 10:01Speaker 1: versus you know, maybe you know, sacrificing time with friends,
- 10:04Speaker 1: and so I very much appreciated that.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Definitely. At the time, it was hard.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Because all I wanted to do was hang out with
- 10:09Speaker 1: my friends, you know, But now looking back, I'm like,
- 10:12Speaker 1: thank goodness I made that decision because I wouldn't be
- 10:15Speaker 1: sitting here today for sure.
- 10:16Speaker 2: What age or like, at what point do you remember
- 10:21Speaker 2: having to start making these kinds of difficult decisions because
- 10:25Speaker 2: most kids, I mean they it would be a new brainer, right,
- 10:29Speaker 2: you said you like, I wanted to have the fund.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So do you remember having to make these calls?
- 10:35Speaker 1: I remember really at the age of twelve, like starting
- 10:39Speaker 1: because I started playing Club Balleba at that time, and
- 10:41Speaker 1: my parents it's such a financial commitment on their end,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and I wasn't able to have another job, and so
- 10:47Speaker 1: they're like, hey, if we do this now, when we
- 10:50Speaker 1: do this, there's going to be sacrifices that come along
- 10:53Speaker 1: with it. And so with that, I think since that
- 10:56Speaker 1: point and on, like I remember little decisions along the
- 10:59Speaker 1: way that really had to start kind of changing and shifting.
- 11:04Speaker 1: But I probably wouldn't say there wasn't any major decisions,
- 11:08Speaker 1: probably until I was like fourteen or.
- 11:09Speaker 4: Something like that.
- 11:10Speaker 1: But yeah, I think that that initial time was like, Hey,
- 11:14Speaker 1: we're going to make this commitment as a family. It's
- 11:16Speaker 1: hard on us, and we need you kind of all
- 11:19Speaker 1: in because if we're not going to do this, if
- 11:21Speaker 1: you're not willing to put in the time.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Wow, I mean you're thirty four now, yeah, Jordan, this
- 11:27Speaker 2: is like twenty two years of volleyball.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I know, it's insane and were I was just practicing
- 11:34Speaker 1: with one of my students this morning and she's like,
- 11:37Speaker 1: what do you think of athletes that have burnout? And
- 11:39Speaker 1: I'm just like, I don't.
- 11:40Speaker 4: I never.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Of course, there was times in my career that I
- 11:43Speaker 1: didn't want to go to practice or wanted to quit,
- 11:46Speaker 1: you know, but my parents really encouraged me to, like, Okay,
- 11:48Speaker 1: you committed to like the beginning of the season, stay
- 11:50Speaker 1: till the end and see how you feel, and you know,
- 11:53Speaker 1: take some time away from it and then decide, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: don't make a rash decision like hey it's over. So
- 11:59Speaker 1: I don't know. It's this term at burnout. It's like
- 12:02Speaker 1: I have a hard time understanding or relating because I
- 12:05Speaker 1: never I just I wanted something so bad that I
- 12:08Speaker 1: was willing to put in the time and struggle through
- 12:11Speaker 1: those moments when I didn't want to do it, because
- 12:13Speaker 1: everybody goes through that. I mean the other day, I
- 12:14Speaker 1: was like, I don't want to work out today, but
- 12:16Speaker 1: here we are, you know, and I feel so much
- 12:18Speaker 1: better when I do it.
- 12:19Speaker 4: So, but it's so interesting that.
- 12:21Speaker 2: I mean, this whole perspective is so interesting to me
- 12:24Speaker 2: because I feel as though I don't know anyone who
- 12:27Speaker 2: hasn't struggled with burnout, and you even just now kind
- 12:30Speaker 2: of insinuated that you may have struggled with it, but
- 12:33Speaker 2: scuming to it never really felt like an option. And
- 12:37Speaker 2: it seems as though this was just like instilled in you, right,
- 12:40Speaker 2: Like I love the approach.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Well, let's just, you know.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Make it our goal to get to this point and
- 12:48Speaker 2: then we'll reevaluate instead of making that really quick, like
- 12:52Speaker 2: perhaps hot headed decision. Do you feel as that you
- 12:56Speaker 2: use that kind of strategy when it comes to their
- 13:00Speaker 2: decisions or important things in your life?
- 13:02Speaker 4: Oh? Absolutely, It's so funny.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I I signed a contract in China after playing in
- 13:08Speaker 1: Turkey for five years, and my first day in China,
- 13:12Speaker 1: I like, my dad travels.
- 13:13Speaker 4: With me and it's you know, it's something new.
- 13:15Speaker 1: But I at this point, I'm thirty one years old, right,
- 13:17Speaker 1: Like I've been doing this for a long time, but
- 13:20Speaker 1: it's a new location. I at first day, I'm like
- 13:22Speaker 1: going to my dad bawling because I'm like, what am
- 13:24Speaker 1: I doing here? Why did I make this decision, you know,
- 13:27Speaker 1: but I was like ready to fly home the next day.
- 13:30Speaker 1: And of course, now my dad my career, He's like,
- 13:32Speaker 1: let's go, let's go on the plane, let's go home.
- 13:34Speaker 1: And I talked to my husband, I'm and he's like,
- 13:37Speaker 1: just give it some time, like you'll figure it out.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Like because my biggest concern was like finding a grocery store.
- 13:42Speaker 1: I was so used to everything in Turkey that everything
- 13:44Speaker 1: was so new that I was just like, but I
- 13:47Speaker 1: gave it some time, and I was able to figure
- 13:49Speaker 1: it out, and like I come out always on the
- 13:51Speaker 1: better end of it, you know, like there hasn't been,
- 13:53Speaker 1: like you said, decision that I've made that I'm like,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I shouldn't have done that, you know, Like I've always
- 13:59Speaker 1: made it and like got through with it. So yeah,
- 14:02Speaker 1: I think that has really carried over for me. It
- 14:04Speaker 1: was like, hey, it may not be the time you
- 14:06Speaker 1: like it right now, but on the other end, you're
- 14:08Speaker 1: going to be so much better because you stuck through it.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, So twelve to fourteen, we're starting to really
- 14:14Speaker 2: take playing volleyball really seriously. Talk to me about the
- 14:19Speaker 2: decision to play in college.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yeah, so kind of at the age of twelve, I
- 14:25Speaker 1: sat down with my parents and I set three goals
- 14:27Speaker 1: and I said, hey, I want to play varsity in
- 14:30Speaker 1: high school, I want to play in college, and I
- 14:32Speaker 1: want to be an Olympian, which is crazy, I know,
- 14:35Speaker 1: and like I didn't know what that meant or what
- 14:39Speaker 1: I was going to take to get there, But like
- 14:40Speaker 1: I said, my parents kind of helped me along the way,
- 14:42Speaker 1: and I was lucky enough to play club and that
- 14:46Speaker 1: really helped me transition into college and something that I
- 14:48Speaker 1: really wanted to do. And then obviously, Nebraska volleyball is
- 14:52Speaker 1: very well known across the United States, and it was
- 14:55Speaker 1: an hour from my house, so it was a pretty
- 14:57Speaker 1: obvious decision and something that I felt like was going
- 15:00Speaker 1: to help me on that third goal of wanting to
- 15:03Speaker 1: be and play after college.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Talk to me about how you felt transitioning from a
- 15:09Speaker 2: town of like seven hundred and fifty people to going
- 15:12Speaker 2: to Nebraska.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, it's so funny because at that time
- 15:18Speaker 1: it was a big deal and it's so different and
- 15:21Speaker 1: it was hard, but having my parents so close was
- 15:25Speaker 1: so nice, and to be able to go home when
- 15:26Speaker 1: I wanted, And it's funny, like I think I went
- 15:28Speaker 1: home like the first two weekends in college and then
- 15:30Speaker 1: maybe once a year after that. You know, it was
- 15:33Speaker 1: just it's so funny how that happens. But yeah, I
- 15:38Speaker 1: was just so excited to be there and so excited
- 15:40Speaker 1: to learn and just be a part.
- 15:42Speaker 4: Of a great team.
- 15:43Speaker 2: When you say that it was hard, what would you
- 15:45Speaker 2: say about it was hard?
- 15:48Speaker 1: I think just a new environment, learning to be around
- 15:51Speaker 1: other people, and how can I focus on being an
- 15:55Speaker 1: athlete but then also being a really good student and
- 15:58Speaker 1: then also being a really good teammate. And I don't know,
- 16:02Speaker 1: it's just a lot of things to juggle, and I
- 16:06Speaker 1: think that was one of the hardest things. They're like
- 16:08Speaker 1: and time management, like dealing with all that.
- 16:10Speaker 2: What you didn't even include in that list is talking
- 16:13Speaker 2: about having like any semblance of a social life. Did
- 16:16Speaker 2: you find that at first that was even remotely possible
- 16:19Speaker 2: for you or was that kind of just blocked out
- 16:21Speaker 2: of your radar.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it was kind of kind of blocked out on
- 16:24Speaker 1: my radar a little bit. I think I was lucky
- 16:26Speaker 1: enough to that I like my teammates, so every time
- 16:29Speaker 1: we were even in practice, I really enjoyed.
- 16:31Speaker 4: That was kind of like my social hour.
- 16:33Speaker 1: But we didn't really have time to do a lot,
- 16:35Speaker 1: you know, and so and I think I've always been
- 16:39Speaker 1: kind of person that volleyball is so much of my life,
- 16:43Speaker 1: which I love, and that that social aspect comes with that,
- 16:47Speaker 1: and that I don't really need a lot outside of it.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Like sometimes when I'm done playing, I'm just like I
- 16:50Speaker 1: want to sit at home and like in silence, because
- 16:52Speaker 1: I'm just you know, like I just need that time
- 16:55Speaker 1: so to decompress.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Well, you talked about getting into college and being a
- 17:00Speaker 2: little overwhelmed with this new beginning. You mentioned more recently
- 17:04Speaker 2: in China, feeling overwhelmed and like almost wanting to run
- 17:07Speaker 2: away from that new beginning. It seems as though, you know,
- 17:10Speaker 2: the unknown is certainly something that can be scary for you,
- 17:14Speaker 2: with as so many people listening to this podcast can
- 17:18Speaker 2: certainly relate. When you think about these circumstances, what would
- 17:23Speaker 2: you say has helped you navigate to the other side
- 17:27Speaker 2: and get over that hurdle so that you could stick
- 17:30Speaker 2: it out and stick with your plan.
- 17:32Speaker 1: My parents always encouraged me to talk to a third party,
- 17:35Speaker 1: so talking to a psychologist as sports psychologist, but also
- 17:38Speaker 1: surrounding yourself with good people. I think it's really helped me.
- 17:43Speaker 1: I've been very lucky to have like a lot of
- 17:44Speaker 1: great coaches, mentors obviously my family to help me, and
- 17:50Speaker 1: psychologists too. I mean, I think it I having someone
- 17:54Speaker 1: that doesn't really know your situation, being able to talk
- 17:57Speaker 1: to them and give their advice or how they feel,
- 18:01Speaker 1: you know, not how they feel but just listen, I
- 18:04Speaker 1: think really has helped me understand who I am and
- 18:08Speaker 1: how I can be best in that situation.
- 18:10Speaker 4: And So.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I don't know if that answered you to question, but
- 18:13Speaker 1: I feel like that's what has feel like has helped
- 18:16Speaker 1: me the most.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Do you have I'm going to ask you a personal question,
- 18:19Speaker 2: and I'll be a little vulnerable with you that I
- 18:22Speaker 2: my parents are divorced as well. They split up when
- 18:24Speaker 2: I was sixteen and got divorced when I was twenty one.
- 18:27Speaker 2: And I can hear in the way that you talk
- 18:29Speaker 2: about your parents and you say both of them, that
- 18:31Speaker 2: you have a good relationship with both of them.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Yes.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Yeah, So I mean I'm curious, like, as you've gone
- 18:37Speaker 2: on to chase all of these big dreams kind of
- 18:40Speaker 2: how that has maybe like impacted you or followed you
- 18:44Speaker 2: in some sort of a way.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, I think, like you said, being from
- 18:48Speaker 1: a divorce family, like it's not easy, right, like going
- 18:50Speaker 1: from household the household constantly. But I applaud my parents
- 18:55Speaker 1: for doing a great job of co parenting. And ultimately,
- 18:59Speaker 1: I think when you bring when you have a kid
- 19:01Speaker 1: in that situation, you know, having making sure that they're
- 19:04Speaker 1: taken care of. And I never had ever a doubt
- 19:07Speaker 1: in my mind that that was where my parents' priorities
- 19:09Speaker 1: were at. And so I'm so grateful for that because
- 19:12Speaker 1: even my mom ended up getting remarried, my dad never
- 19:15Speaker 1: did but has had a longtime partner for many years,
- 19:18Speaker 1: and so but I always just felt like, hey, we're
- 19:21Speaker 1: here for you and whatever you need from us. Now,
- 19:24Speaker 1: I don't have any siblings either, Now do you have siblings?
- 19:27Speaker 4: Like I'm wanted? Okay, And so maybe I don't know
- 19:30Speaker 4: if a sibling would have changed that, you know, like
- 19:33Speaker 4: that dynamic. I was literally the sole focus. So I
- 19:37Speaker 4: don't know if if that dynamic could have changed as well.
- 19:40Speaker 3: Totally, yeah, totally just curious on my end.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, So you start playing at Nebraska, would you
- 19:47Speaker 2: say that at this point you were still passionate and
- 19:53Speaker 2: like pretty certain on chasing goal number three of becoming Olympian.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I always wanted play after college, but I didn't
- 20:02Speaker 1: know what that meant, like, oh, I want to be
- 20:03Speaker 1: an Olympian, but I didn't understand that there was a
- 20:05Speaker 1: process to it. I thought it was just like, oh,
- 20:07Speaker 1: you finished college and like you try out, you know,
- 20:09Speaker 1: Like I just didn't understand. And so yeah, I think
- 20:14Speaker 1: that's one of the reasons why I went there was
- 20:16Speaker 1: because the coach was he had been on the national
- 20:19Speaker 1: team before and understood, Hey, this is what it takes
- 20:22Speaker 1: to be at the highest level, and we're going to
- 20:24Speaker 1: help you get there.
- 20:25Speaker 4: And so I think that's that's.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Why talk us through like what that process really looks like,
- 20:30Speaker 2: because I'm assuming a lot of people listening to this
- 20:32Speaker 2: right now have the same have the same thought process,
- 20:36Speaker 2: or under the same impression.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So at the time, we didn't have a professional league
- 20:42Speaker 1: in the States, and we still really don't have like
- 20:44Speaker 1: a full professional season in our professional league in the States.
- 20:47Speaker 1: We have like a really short contense one it's only
- 20:49Speaker 1: six weeks, but most people in order to kind of
- 20:53Speaker 1: gain more international experience, we have to go over season play.
- 20:56Speaker 1: So normal circumstances, obviously, the Olympics is every four years,
- 21:01Speaker 1: but the national team meets up every summer, and during
- 21:03Speaker 1: the summer, the national team plays in between four to
- 21:06Speaker 1: five tournaments a year, but every one of those tournaments
- 21:09Speaker 1: you're basically making a cut. We train with twenty four
- 21:12Speaker 1: and then they come down to twelve or fourteen, depending
- 21:15Speaker 1: on the tournament, and that is basically just a cycle
- 21:18Speaker 1: through the four years. So we're overseas between eight six
- 21:22Speaker 1: to eight months, and then we're worth the national team
- 21:24Speaker 1: the rest of the time and then yep, again that
- 21:27Speaker 1: just cycles every four years. So you're hoping that in
- 21:30Speaker 1: those four years you're constantly making those fourteen person rosters
- 21:34Speaker 1: every tournament, and then when it comes to the Olympics,
- 21:37Speaker 1: you're hoping to make that final roster. I've had girls
- 21:40Speaker 1: start the whole team like the whole four years and
- 21:43Speaker 1: then not make the Olympic roster. So it's very very
- 21:46Speaker 1: interesting for you.
- 21:49Speaker 3: I know you've been to three Olympics.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Now, did you ever have a concern or worry about
- 21:56Speaker 2: not making the roster yourself?
- 21:59Speaker 1: You know, I think my first time going to the Olympics,
- 22:02Speaker 1: I think I even though I had been starting, I
- 22:04Speaker 1: had been starting pretty much all four years until they
- 22:08Speaker 1: actually tell you, like, hey, you are part of the
- 22:10Speaker 1: twelve going to London.
- 22:12Speaker 4: You know, like it.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Doesn't really hit you until that point, and so I
- 22:16Speaker 1: think there was a little more concern at that point.
- 22:19Speaker 1: But I think in Rio and in Tokyo, I had
- 22:23Speaker 1: kind of even if I wasn't starting. I think the
- 22:26Speaker 1: leadership part, the experience part really kind of kind of
- 22:31Speaker 1: sets you just a little bit higher, not advantage, but
- 22:35Speaker 1: it definitely has some weight to it, and so I
- 22:37Speaker 1: think there wasn't maybe as much concern as there was
- 22:42Speaker 1: that first club.
- 22:43Speaker 2: So you mentioned the importance of going overseas to train,
- 22:48Speaker 2: especially if you want to excel in the sport. Fill
- 22:51Speaker 2: us in on the decision the first time around to
- 22:55Speaker 2: go overseas and talk to us about where you went.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Yeah, So I actually graduated college early semester early, so
- 23:03Speaker 1: I graduated December, and then at the time, Puerto Rico
- 23:06Speaker 1: was kind of like a semi pro season and so
- 23:08Speaker 1: it was only three months long, and it was kind
- 23:10Speaker 1: of nice because it transitioned right into the national team,
- 23:13Speaker 1: so I didn't have to go over like over in Europe.
- 23:15Speaker 1: And so I went to Puerto Rico, got a play
- 23:18Speaker 1: and then start went to the national team, and then
- 23:21Speaker 1: while I was in Thailand with the national team, we
- 23:23Speaker 1: played Russia and one of their assistant coaches had noticed
- 23:26Speaker 1: me and he wanted me to come to Russia, and
- 23:29Speaker 1: so I started and I started going to Russia, and yeah,
- 23:34Speaker 1: it was a unique experience to go there. The team
- 23:38Speaker 1: had just moved up to like the first division, and
- 23:40Speaker 1: so definitely didn't have like a lot of resources, especially
- 23:44Speaker 1: coming from college that Nebraska had. I mean, we chartered
- 23:47Speaker 1: everywhere like it was high you know, high level, and
- 23:51Speaker 1: going from that to like Russia was definitely a big,
- 23:54Speaker 1: big shock, you know, bulah blah wise for sure, and
- 23:57Speaker 1: culturally as well.
- 23:58Speaker 2: It's interesting, right because volleyball obviously team sport, but all
- 24:04Speaker 2: of this travel, I would imagine that it could be
- 24:10Speaker 2: really lonely, oh for sure.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so I to get a little more vulnerable.
- 24:19Speaker 4: I was actually married.
- 24:19Speaker 1: So I got married right out of college in two
- 24:21Speaker 1: thousand and nine to my or my high school my
- 24:25Speaker 1: college boyfriend at the time, and so he actually tried
- 24:28Speaker 1: He actually traveled with me for the first three seasons
- 24:31Speaker 1: while I was overseas. We were married for seven years.
- 24:34Speaker 1: But as you can imagine, marriage is tough, and then marriage.
- 24:37Speaker 1: On top of training with the national team and playing professionally,
- 24:40Speaker 1: he was with me all the time, and then apart
- 24:42Speaker 1: from me on the national team with me all the time.
- 24:44Speaker 1: So it just became really stressful in our marriage and
- 24:47Speaker 1: we actually split. Gosh, it will be almost five years
- 24:50Speaker 1: six years now, and so but I think that I
- 24:54Speaker 1: had to learn.
- 24:55Speaker 4: To be on my own. I didn't know what it
- 24:58Speaker 4: was like.
- 24:58Speaker 1: I had never really I'd been solely by myself a
- 25:02Speaker 1: little bit in college, but I feel like you're still
- 25:04Speaker 1: surrounded by so many people that I need to learn
- 25:07Speaker 1: how to be me and how does Jordan function without
- 25:11Speaker 1: someone someone there? And it was really like so empowering
- 25:15Speaker 1: and I had to learn a lot. But yeah, but
- 25:18Speaker 1: definitely lonely at times. But I think I've gotten real
- 25:21Speaker 1: comfortable just being okay with with that space and striving
- 25:25Speaker 1: in that space.
- 25:26Speaker 2: So for you, at this time when you separated from
- 25:32Speaker 2: your ex husband, do you remember how you kind of
- 25:37Speaker 2: pulled yourself out of these dark moments? Because I think
- 25:40Speaker 2: that it goes without saying that you everyone experience experiences
- 25:44Speaker 2: those moments when you're when you're dealing with heartache, even
- 25:47Speaker 2: if you know that you know it's the right thing
- 25:49Speaker 2: for you, right, Like it doesn't doesn't make it easier
- 25:51Speaker 2: that like someone I don't know royally messed up or not.
- 25:55Speaker 2: It's like when something comes to an end, you have
- 25:57Speaker 2: to like mourn that loss and for you and more
- 26:00Speaker 2: in that loss, and also take on the responsibilities that
- 26:02Speaker 2: come hand in hand with being a teammate.
- 26:04Speaker 3: How was that?
- 26:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it definitely wasn't easy. A lot of soul searching
- 26:10Speaker 1: at that point. Again, at seeing a psychologist like I was,
- 26:14Speaker 1: I was going to therapy myself and trying to understand
- 26:18Speaker 1: is this right for me? And is this right for us?
- 26:20Speaker 1: And trying to search for those answers. I remember journal
- 26:24Speaker 1: journaling a lot. I remember at one point in my
- 26:26Speaker 1: journal I was like, man, I just build a house,
- 26:30Speaker 1: Like I was just like all these things were I
- 26:32Speaker 1: just went to the Olympic. I mean, I was just
- 26:34Speaker 1: like all these things were great? But why am I
- 26:36Speaker 1: still in this? Like I don't feel like myself, Like
- 26:39Speaker 1: I don't feel like I'm who I am. And I
- 26:41Speaker 1: really just spent time journaling and reading about relationships and
- 26:46Speaker 1: how can I be better? And what can I learn
- 26:49Speaker 1: as a teammate? How can I be a better teammate
- 26:51Speaker 1: because I just don't think I was a great teammate
- 26:54Speaker 1: because I was so caught up in everything that was
- 26:56Speaker 1: going on at home, and I was kind of a
- 26:58Speaker 1: long answer, but yeah, yeah.
- 27:00Speaker 4: It's tough.
- 27:01Speaker 1: It's not like you said, you are morning, and whether
- 27:03Speaker 1: it's the right decision or not, it's it's tough.
- 27:07Speaker 2: You know, yeah, And I think it's what's interesting here.
- 27:11Speaker 2: You said that I needed to work on getting better
- 27:15Speaker 2: at being by myself. And I think so often like
- 27:17Speaker 2: we hear this wisdom, right, it's like you need to
- 27:20Speaker 2: be okay on your own before you can be with
- 27:22Speaker 2: somebody else. But a lot of the time I get
- 27:25Speaker 2: messages from women, and I mean, I'm a single woman
- 27:28Speaker 2: in my mid thirties who feels very good at this
- 27:31Speaker 2: point being alone, but hopes to one day have that
- 27:34Speaker 2: life partner so I can get myself a three year
- 27:36Speaker 2: old French bulldog. But basically the question is like, well,
- 27:42Speaker 2: how do I get good at being on my own?
- 27:45Speaker 2: What do you think, aside from the journaling and aside
- 27:48Speaker 2: from you know, the psychologist, like how did you get
- 27:51Speaker 2: your mindset to a place where you felt more comfortable
- 27:54Speaker 2: with that?
- 27:54Speaker 1: I think for me, I had to be okay with
- 27:57Speaker 1: the thought of not like being a the rest of
- 28:00Speaker 1: my life, Like can I be alone and be okay?
- 28:04Speaker 1: And the answer is heck, yeah, I can. I can
- 28:08Speaker 1: do a lot of things. And I think women today
- 28:10Speaker 1: are just so incredibly powerful and like, I think it's
- 28:14Speaker 1: a beautiful thing to see such strong, powerful women standing
- 28:17Speaker 1: on their own two feet and not relying on someone
- 28:20Speaker 1: else one for their happiness or financial support or whatever
- 28:23Speaker 1: it is that I just and I don't know, I
- 28:27Speaker 1: just wanted to embrace that side of it so much
- 28:30Speaker 1: that that I wanted someone that came into my life
- 28:33Speaker 1: that was also equally as driven in that sense, and
- 28:37Speaker 1: that also enhanced that experience, like empowered me to continue
- 28:41Speaker 1: to strive to be my best version because if he's
- 28:44Speaker 1: his best version, then we can both be our best
- 28:47Speaker 1: versions together. And so but I think just that that
- 28:51Speaker 1: switch in my mind of like, hey, but if I
- 28:53Speaker 1: don't find anybody, like, that's okay too. I can still
- 28:57Speaker 1: have a kid by myself, Like, you know, there's ways
- 28:59Speaker 1: to have a family still and do such kick ass
- 29:03Speaker 1: things that like how cool, Like I just I think
- 29:07Speaker 1: that is like the coolest thing.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think it's interesting as well, like touching
- 29:12Speaker 2: on this idea of knowing that you have worth as
- 29:17Speaker 2: you are just you. I think in society, especially when
- 29:21Speaker 2: it comes to women, like we are just like made
- 29:25Speaker 2: to feel as though like on our own we are
- 29:28Speaker 2: not enough, which is so messed up, and more and
- 29:31Speaker 2: more women are fighting for equal pay and now, like
- 29:35Speaker 2: you said, we have so much, so many more options
- 29:37Speaker 2: when it comes to like having families on our own.
- 29:40Speaker 2: And I also think that it goes like without saying
- 29:42Speaker 2: that it's so important that you know that, like, there's
- 29:45Speaker 2: nothing wrong with you if you want to also do
- 29:47Speaker 2: these things with other people. It's just that it's important
- 29:50Speaker 2: that you find your sense of value as you are
- 29:54Speaker 2: just you.
- 29:55Speaker 4: For sure, absolutely, I think you nailed it on the head.
- 29:58Speaker 1: And yeah, I and it's maybe it's easier for me
- 30:02Speaker 1: because I've I've had a career and I've you know,
- 30:04Speaker 1: been to places and I've seen things and done things
- 30:07Speaker 1: that I've wanted to do, and you know, it's easy
- 30:09Speaker 1: for me to say that, you know, but yeah, it's
- 30:12Speaker 1: hard when when that's not the space in which you're operating.
- 30:14Speaker 1: But I think again, putting people in place in your
- 30:17Speaker 1: life that allow those things to happen for you.
- 30:20Speaker 3: So how long were you playing in Russia?
- 30:23Speaker 4: I ended up playing there for five years, which is
- 30:25Speaker 4: still crazy to me.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I'm like, how like even after the first year, I
- 30:29Speaker 1: was like, but they just kept they I mean, they
- 30:32Speaker 1: really treated me so well, and the team started like
- 30:35Speaker 1: really getting good and pumping more funds into.
- 30:40Speaker 4: It and like great athletes. So it was it was
- 30:42Speaker 4: a really good experience.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Did you struggle with any of like the cultural differences
- 30:47Speaker 2: or perhaps like the language barrier for sure?
- 30:50Speaker 1: Yeah. I think one teammate now on that team spoke
- 30:53Speaker 1: like decent English, but there was like zero socializing like outside.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Really it was just because we just couldn't communicate. It
- 30:59Speaker 1: was just like, hey, I want to talk to you,
- 31:01Speaker 1: but like we're just gonna sit here in silence, you know.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So it was a lot of like hand signals up down,
- 31:07Speaker 1: you know, Like I learned a little bit of Russian
- 31:09Speaker 1: like to play, but like as.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Far as like anything else, it was it was tough.
- 31:13Speaker 3: Wow, I mean talk about feeling really lonely then.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, no, it was.
- 31:18Speaker 1: There was times where I was like, man, and I
- 31:21Speaker 1: think that's why I eventually transitioned to going to Turkey.
- 31:24Speaker 4: Because it was it was time to time to change
- 31:28Speaker 4: it up.
- 31:29Speaker 2: So when you went to Turkey, what would you say
- 31:32Speaker 2: was one of the biggest differences about going over there?
- 31:37Speaker 1: I think I think volleyball was just as high level
- 31:40Speaker 1: as it was in Russia at the time. But then
- 31:42Speaker 1: also like the whole team spoke English, like our coach
- 31:45Speaker 1: spokenng like spoke English. All the Turkish goals spoke English. Uh.
- 31:49Speaker 1: It's simple as a little more westernized than where I
- 31:51Speaker 1: was living in uh in Russia, And so there was
- 31:54Speaker 1: just a lot more freedoms that I was able to
- 31:57Speaker 1: like kind of move on like by myself if I
- 32:00Speaker 1: wanted to go out and do things like that. So
- 32:02Speaker 1: that was really what was enticing about it.
- 32:04Speaker 2: We're covering the fact that you've made such massive moves
- 32:08Speaker 2: to go after your dream, and for so many listening
- 32:13Speaker 2: right now, they may struggle with taking these big leaps
- 32:17Speaker 2: of faith, so to speak. In your experience and in
- 32:23Speaker 2: your experience, you know, what advice would you give to
- 32:26Speaker 2: these people who are want to trust their gut, but
- 32:30Speaker 2: they just don't know if they have the courage in them.
- 32:33Speaker 4: Yeah, No, that's it's tough.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I think I think for me, what had kept me
- 32:38Speaker 1: going for like the longest time and still does is
- 32:41Speaker 1: like I don't want to look back, Like bullyball is
- 32:45Speaker 1: such a short lifespan, right, like okay, twenty years, but
- 32:49Speaker 1: it's still like when you think about it in perspective
- 32:51Speaker 1: to your entire life, it's such a short timeframe, and
- 32:54Speaker 1: I didn't want to get to the end of it,
- 32:56Speaker 1: like I don't want I didn't want to sit in
- 32:57Speaker 1: this chair today talking to you and be like I
- 33:00Speaker 1: wish I would have done this, or I wish I
- 33:02Speaker 1: would have done that, or I could have done this,
- 33:04Speaker 1: But I chigured out, like every chance that I've had
- 33:08Speaker 1: to like take that step or try something new, I've
- 33:11Speaker 1: really at the time I didn't want to, like I said,
- 33:15Speaker 1: but I did it. And now I can sit here
- 33:18Speaker 1: and say, like I literally like I have done everything
- 33:21Speaker 1: that I could to be here and to be proud
- 33:24Speaker 1: of what I've done. And so that in itself, that
- 33:28Speaker 1: disappointment or that regret was enough for me to like
- 33:32Speaker 1: not hesitate in those times of like kind of iffiness.
- 33:35Speaker 1: So I think when it comes to those like taking
- 33:38Speaker 1: a leap, like like why not, because if you don't
- 33:42Speaker 1: and you look back in your life and be like, hey,
- 33:44Speaker 1: I remember in twenty ten, I could have done this,
- 33:46Speaker 1: and I chose not to, Like I didn't want to
- 33:48Speaker 1: live with that. So that's that's kind of where I sat.
- 33:51Speaker 1: And I think even for me, I think that started
- 33:53Speaker 1: from like young with my parents, Like I just didn't
- 33:57Speaker 1: want to disappoint them. I think the weight of disappointing
- 34:00Speaker 1: my parents it was like such a motivation for me,
- 34:03Speaker 1: and I just wanted to make them proud and like
- 34:06Speaker 1: obviously like they were always beyond proud of me. There
- 34:08Speaker 1: was never this like harshness or you know, nothing of
- 34:13Speaker 1: that sort. But I just I didn't want to.
- 34:16Speaker 4: Be that kid that they're like, I don't know, what
- 34:19Speaker 4: did you do with your life? You know, I don't know.
- 34:20Speaker 4: I just that was just kept me going.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 34:31Speaker 2: about my sponsors. First up, Camelback. Now, camel Back's a
- 34:36Speaker 2: new sponsor to the show, and to say that I
- 34:37Speaker 2: am amped about this partnership would be a major understatement.
- 34:41Speaker 2: I just traveled God for twelve fourteen days, and of
- 34:45Speaker 2: course I brought my favorite Camelback for the ride.
- 34:48Speaker 3: It was a life saver. Now I have a couple
- 34:50Speaker 3: of go tos.

- 34:54Speaker 2: which is made of insulated stainless steel and has a
- 34:56Speaker 2: super handy bite valve so that it won't spill and
- 35:00Speaker 2: and it's leakproof. I swear by this usually when I'm
- 35:02Speaker 2: on my Peloton bike. I did bring it on my trip.
- 35:05Speaker 2: And then I also cannot praise my Horizon tumbler enough,
- 35:09Speaker 2: which is ideal for my morning walks to fork Green
- 35:11Speaker 2: Park keeping my coffee warm.
- 35:13Speaker 3: You know the deal.
- 35:15Speaker 2: It is so comfortable to carry around and it's helping
- 35:18Speaker 2: me kick my not so stellar habit of buying coffee
- 35:22Speaker 2: out a little too often, which I all think that
- 35:26Speaker 2: we can agree is pretty hard to squash. Anyway, I

- 37:10Speaker 2: slash hurdle. I feel like the extrinsic motivation had to
- 37:20Speaker 2: turn to intrinsic motivation as you got older, right, because
- 37:24Speaker 2: it wasn't as though, you know, you go to an Olympics,
- 37:27Speaker 2: you go to two Olympics, like your parents are freaking
- 37:30Speaker 2: proud of you. Man, Right, So, like where where if
- 37:33Speaker 2: you had to try to like pinpoint the point where
- 37:36Speaker 2: you stopped being like, oh, I don't know if I
- 37:38Speaker 2: want to do this and realize like, no, this is
- 37:40Speaker 2: exactly what I want. Like you identified those goals quote
- 37:44Speaker 2: unquote when you were twelve, but like when did it
- 37:47Speaker 2: really shift?
- 37:48Speaker 1: Yeah? Man, My thought is is like my first year
- 37:55Speaker 1: on the national team, I had to really learn every
- 37:58Speaker 1: skill pretty much every skill that has gotten me to
- 38:01Speaker 1: that point. So I had to relearn how to pass,
- 38:03Speaker 1: I had to relearn how to hit. I had to
- 38:05Speaker 1: relearn literally everything. And at that point I was a
- 38:08Speaker 1: national champion. I had been the three final fours, Like
- 38:11Speaker 1: I was like, I'm pretty good. But then to have
- 38:13Speaker 1: to literally start over almost and like rebuild everything. I
- 38:18Speaker 1: was like and to become a learner. I always I
- 38:21Speaker 1: think I always was like my mom always talked about
- 38:23Speaker 1: be a sponge, like take it all in, like your
- 38:25Speaker 1: coach may be crazy.
- 38:26Speaker 4: But you got to apply it and try it.
- 38:28Speaker 1: And I think having to redo all that, like I
- 38:33Speaker 1: was like, huh, I feel like I'm I'm meant to
- 38:36Speaker 1: be here, Like I'm meant to be a volleyball player,
- 38:38Speaker 1: Like I'm meant to do something big, and like why
- 38:41Speaker 1: not continue to sharpen that tool and kind of make
- 38:47Speaker 1: it my craft and try to master the craft. And
- 38:50Speaker 1: still today I'm like, man, I like I was just
- 38:52Speaker 1: shaking balls left and right today in practice, and I'm like,
- 38:55Speaker 1: I still have so much to learn and so much
- 38:57Speaker 1: I want to learn.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Why did you have to relearn.
- 39:02Speaker 4: So a lot? It's kind of it gets a little technical,
- 39:05Speaker 4: but I was learning.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Like with passing, for example, the ball at the international
- 39:09Speaker 1: level comes so fast that you don't have time to
- 39:11Speaker 1: really move your feet necessarily, Like all you have to
- 39:14Speaker 1: do is stick out your arms and let the ball
- 39:17Speaker 1: like do it. Like your arms do a lot of
- 39:18Speaker 1: the work, but let the ball like reflect off your arms.
- 39:21Speaker 1: And like I was getting the ball more in my
- 39:23Speaker 1: midline where we wanted to take it more outside of
- 39:25Speaker 1: our body line, and so having to learn how to
- 39:28Speaker 1: do that and then like approach efficiently to the ball
- 39:33Speaker 1: just really hone down on simplifying the skill versus like
- 39:38Speaker 1: making all these movements so complicated.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Another technical question, why is the ball coming faster to
- 39:44Speaker 2: you on an international level than on this level?
- 39:47Speaker 1: Yeah, just because the players are bigger, faster, stronger than
- 39:52Speaker 1: hitting the ball harder. So and again I was that
- 39:55Speaker 1: ignorant person coming out of college, like I'm pretty good,
- 39:58Speaker 1: Like you know, like I did all these things like
- 40:00Speaker 1: which are great, but and I didn't understand. Like watching
- 40:04Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, it looks faster, but like it
- 40:05Speaker 1: doesn't seem that hard. But then when I got in,
- 40:08Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I get why you need to
- 40:10Speaker 1: go overseas and understand and learn and read and do
- 40:14Speaker 1: all these things because it just it's a much different game.
- 40:17Speaker 2: So where are you when you find out that you
- 40:22Speaker 2: made your first Olympic team?
- 40:25Speaker 4: I was, Anna, I'm in California.
- 40:27Speaker 1: And the cool thing about at that time, they like
- 40:30Speaker 1: called you into the office, so we trained with At
- 40:33Speaker 1: that point, I want to say it was like eighteen
- 40:35Speaker 1: that they cut down to twelve, and so you come
- 40:38Speaker 1: in the office, you sit around all the coaches are
- 40:40Speaker 1: sitting there and yeah, they that's how it said, like, Hey,
- 40:44Speaker 1: we just want to congratulate you on you are part
- 40:46Speaker 1: of the twelve going to London, And I was just like.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Is this real?
- 40:52Speaker 3: Wow?
- 40:52Speaker 2: I can't even imagine the feelings that come hand in
- 40:55Speaker 2: hand with like being in that room and like your
- 40:57Speaker 2: dream coming coming true in this moment. I also would
- 41:01Speaker 2: imagine that it has to be hard to come out
- 41:04Speaker 2: of that room and feel so happy and on cloud
- 41:08Speaker 2: nine knowing that there are other women that you care
- 41:11Speaker 2: about deeply, this being such a connected team sport that
- 41:14Speaker 2: didn't have that same meeting.
- 41:16Speaker 1: That is what's tough, is because you think you know
- 41:19Speaker 1: who the team is, and you think you know who's
- 41:21Speaker 1: on it, and yeah, like those girls that didn't get
- 41:24Speaker 1: to hear that that day, and just like the heartbreak
- 41:26Speaker 1: their feeling and how do you use a teammate like
- 41:29Speaker 1: console them, you know? And yeah, it's just it's a
- 41:32Speaker 1: tough space and gives me chills because it's just like
- 41:37Speaker 1: and I again, I don't think at that point in
- 41:39Speaker 1: my life like I was present enough to know and
- 41:42Speaker 1: to understand like the impact or like how I could
- 41:45Speaker 1: be there for my teammates because I was so just
- 41:48Speaker 1: wrapped up in my own if that I just like
- 41:53Speaker 1: I could, I didn't have the capacity, And it's I
- 41:56Speaker 1: think that's talk about regret. Like I think that's one
- 41:59Speaker 1: read that I do have is like being a little
- 42:03Speaker 1: more like understanding and compassionate and taking the time to
- 42:09Speaker 1: really dive into those people.
- 42:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's interesting.
- 42:13Speaker 2: I think, maybe more so in the last year than before,
- 42:17Speaker 2: I started to really understand.
- 42:21Speaker 3: What can come from listening in that.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Sometimes when we have these moments and things don't go
- 42:29Speaker 2: as planned and we're trying to process it, all we
- 42:31Speaker 2: want to do is talk to someone about it. And
- 42:35Speaker 2: that conversation isn't necessarily meant for that other individual to
- 42:40Speaker 2: provide feedback, but rather hopefully just to hold space. And
- 42:44Speaker 2: it seems as though at that time maybe that was
- 42:47Speaker 2: something that you hadn't really focused in on yet.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Either.
- 42:51Speaker 4: No, definitely not. Yeah, I think you're absolutely right.
- 42:53Speaker 1: I think, yeah, just creating that space for them to
- 42:56Speaker 1: just even if it's silence, like just sitting there and
- 43:00Speaker 1: sitting with them and knowing that you're there, Like I,
- 43:04Speaker 1: like you said, I think that would have been head
- 43:07Speaker 1: and to like above what I what, I didn't even
- 43:10Speaker 1: attempt to do anything. It's just you know, a text
- 43:13Speaker 1: here and there. But like that's kind of lame, you know.
- 43:15Speaker 2: So did you have any sort of circumstance, whether it
- 43:20Speaker 2: was with London or with Rio or going forward, where
- 43:25Speaker 2: maybe someone had articulated that to you.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I had a few coaches along the way
- 43:34Speaker 1: that just like like acknowledgment of not acknowledgment, but just
- 43:37Speaker 1: like an awareness around how my actions.
- 43:39Speaker 4: Were being perceived by others.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Now, I feel like I'm a very I come across
- 43:44Speaker 1: as one manner like I'm very like stoic. I have
- 43:47Speaker 1: this like external face, thank you my dad, and that
- 43:51Speaker 1: it's not that I look angry, but I'm not. And
- 43:55Speaker 1: I think that often is perceived in a manner that
- 43:58Speaker 1: is not what is really like in my heart and
- 44:01Speaker 1: how I actually feel. And so but I think also
- 44:04Speaker 1: my actions like in practice, like I would sit at
- 44:07Speaker 1: the end of the bench or you know, like I'm
- 44:10Speaker 1: very much a player that I don't really need a
- 44:12Speaker 1: lot of noise around me, like I just need to
- 44:14Speaker 1: focus on what's happening, and sometimes chatter like talking off
- 44:17Speaker 1: like I'd rather focus on what the coach is talking about.
- 44:20Speaker 1: And so I was often kind of on my own,
- 44:23Speaker 1: but like it wasn't because I didn't want to be
- 44:25Speaker 1: around my teammates or didn't like them, you know. And
- 44:27Speaker 1: so but that awareness piece around, Hey, but what do
- 44:30Speaker 1: you think your teammates think of you when you do that?
- 44:32Speaker 1: Like and didn't even know, wasn't even aware. And so
- 44:38Speaker 1: I'm just really grateful for that.
- 44:40Speaker 2: And I think that sometimes individuals have trouble opening themselves
- 44:45Speaker 2: up to that level of self awareness or even like
- 44:49Speaker 2: having some inquisition around that, because it can make us
- 44:53Speaker 2: feel as though we're doing something wrong by being how
- 44:56Speaker 2: we are. It doesn't necessarily even mean that you need
- 45:00Speaker 2: to change a behavior pattern. It just means that you
- 45:04Speaker 2: need to be cognizant of how something about you may
- 45:07Speaker 2: be interpreted by others.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Yep, a thousand percent.
- 45:12Speaker 1: But I but honestly in my heart at the time,
- 45:14Speaker 1: like I was like, I'm open to feedback and I
- 45:16Speaker 1: want to hear those things. But I think most people
- 45:19Speaker 1: even were attimidated to tell me those things, you know.
- 45:21Speaker 1: And so to have someone to even sit down and
- 45:23Speaker 1: like have the time to say, hey, like whoa I
- 45:27Speaker 1: would have I would have done something way different, like
- 45:30Speaker 1: tell me, you know, like I don't want to be
- 45:33Speaker 1: I want to be better, you know.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think it's like coming at those conversations
- 45:37Speaker 2: with grace and like openness.
- 45:39Speaker 3: I get so many messages from women.
- 45:41Speaker 2: I mean this makes me think about like female friendships,
- 45:44Speaker 2: for example, and as you get older, especially a lot
- 45:47Speaker 2: of the time, like our friendships, they ebb and flow,
- 45:50Speaker 2: and some can be based on proximity and others can
- 45:53Speaker 2: be based on a mutual interest. And there are so
- 45:57Speaker 2: many reasons that these relationships do they that they do
- 46:01Speaker 2: ebb and flow, But coming to terms with that can
- 46:03Speaker 2: be like really difficult, and opening yourself up to.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Feedback that you may be scared to get is a
- 46:09Speaker 3: really scary thing to do.
- 46:10Speaker 4: It really is? It? Really is?
- 46:12Speaker 1: I listened to a podcast how it was like really
- 46:14Speaker 1: hard to like make friends in your thirties and forties
- 46:16Speaker 1: because you're just like like yeah, like you said, ebb
- 46:19Speaker 1: and flow, Like is it worth the time?
- 46:21Speaker 4: You know? Is if I am I going to move?
- 46:23Speaker 4: Like is it? Basically? Yeah, a proximity?
- 46:25Speaker 1: Like there's so many things and we're still trying to navigate,
- 46:28Speaker 1: like who we are as, you know, adults and what
- 46:32Speaker 1: we want in a friend. And yeah, I think you
- 46:34Speaker 1: said it.
- 46:35Speaker 3: You said it perfectly, So let's talk.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I mean, obviously you can't forget Rio, but I'm going
- 46:41Speaker 2: to fast forward us here a little bit to Tokyo.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Nothing like you thought it would be, but everything and
- 46:49Speaker 2: more question mark.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a perfect, perfect stamp right there. Yeah, it's
- 46:55Speaker 1: I am ultimate and I think our team can attest
- 46:58Speaker 1: to this. If we the Olympics were in twenty twenty
- 47:01Speaker 1: how they were supposed to be. I don't think we
- 47:03Speaker 1: walk away.
- 47:04Speaker 3: With the gold medal, huh. Why?
- 47:08Speaker 1: Our team was just in very different place. We had
- 47:12Speaker 1: some newcomers coming in, Like our relationship with our staff
- 47:15Speaker 1: like wasn't I wouldn't say it wasn't great, but it
- 47:18Speaker 1: just it wasn't where we feel like it needed to be.
- 47:21Speaker 1: I think there was some turmoil on like who they
- 47:24Speaker 1: selected and whatever, and so we just weren't in a
- 47:28Speaker 1: great place. And so to have the pandemic and just
- 47:30Speaker 1: shut down everything and basically rebuild our culture. How do
- 47:34Speaker 1: we want to talk to each other? How do we
- 47:36Speaker 1: want to you know, manage an issue or if we
- 47:39Speaker 1: have a problem with staff, how do we want to
- 47:40Speaker 1: acknowledge it? And so having all those conversations have led
- 47:44Speaker 1: to just something so much bigger than I could have
- 47:48Speaker 1: ever dreamed about. So it's really something so special.
- 47:52Speaker 2: What worked best in a time that everything felt like
- 47:57Speaker 2: it wasn't supposed to be.
- 48:02Speaker 4: That's a good question.
- 48:04Speaker 1: I don't know if this answered it, but I was
- 48:07Speaker 1: surprised by we would have meetings on Zoom and how
- 48:10Speaker 1: vulnerable people were able to be even on a screen,
- 48:14Speaker 1: you know, and how we were able to work through
- 48:16Speaker 1: some things that were hard. I think that really set
- 48:22Speaker 1: us up for success. I don't know if that answers
- 48:24Speaker 1: your question, because I mean toulate your question.
- 48:27Speaker 3: No, it totally, It totally answers the question.
- 48:30Speaker 2: I think a lot of people kind of surprise themselves
- 48:33Speaker 2: in the way they were able to open up with
- 48:38Speaker 2: people that they didn't know so well over the last
- 48:40Speaker 2: sixteen eighteen months, and that like even within my community,
- 48:44Speaker 2: the hurdlers as I call them, we started doing a
- 48:48Speaker 2: lot of digital programming and to have the opportunity to
- 48:51Speaker 2: bring together mostly women from all over the world, of
- 48:54Speaker 2: women calling in from Hong Kong and Canada and like
- 48:58Speaker 2: Costa Rica and to get together with strangers and like
- 49:02Speaker 2: feel okay, getting vulnerable. It's like really it's a really
- 49:07Speaker 2: special thing because in that vulnerability like can come a
- 49:11Speaker 2: lot of growth.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, absolutely, And I think that's what I
- 49:16Speaker 1: think during the process, people are like, oh, another meeting another,
- 49:19Speaker 1: you know, like especially as an athlete, like you're just
- 49:21Speaker 1: like you're tired, right, and you're just like want some
- 49:23Speaker 1: time to shut down. But I think we could all
- 49:26Speaker 1: say now that it was so worth it. And I
- 49:28Speaker 1: think people bought into now, like hey, like having these
- 49:32Speaker 1: talks like meet a lot and they pay off, and
- 49:35Speaker 1: like you said, being vulnerable, like that's the only way
- 49:37Speaker 1: you grow. It's really special when you when you can
- 49:41Speaker 1: do it as a team and find this comhesive unit.
- 49:45Speaker 1: And I don't know if you find it in some
- 49:47Speaker 1: of your like work relationships or whatever, but as a team,
- 49:50Speaker 1: like sometimes you're not gonna fully agree with the person
- 49:53Speaker 1: next to you, you know, and you know, but ultimately
- 49:56Speaker 1: there's this like mutual respect. Hey, I respect you for
- 49:59Speaker 1: who you are and what you bring to the game,
- 50:03Speaker 1: and we're going to work together and whatever capacity that
- 50:06Speaker 1: is for something that's much bigger than us. And if
- 50:09Speaker 1: we can figure out how to drop our shit excuse
- 50:12Speaker 1: my language, and be able to just move on and
- 50:15Speaker 1: play together. Then like, that's that's the epitome. That's that's
- 50:19Speaker 1: where success is really really meant to be for sure.
- 50:24Speaker 2: So you've got to tell us what's it really like
- 50:27Speaker 2: at the Olympics.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Yeah, especially this year.
- 50:30Speaker 2: What is it really like at the Olympics this year
- 50:33Speaker 2: to be there, to be in the village.
- 50:35Speaker 3: Give us the lowdown.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just I would say that I'm grateful that
- 50:40Speaker 1: I have been able to experience what Olympics is with
- 50:43Speaker 1: like bands and family there and because it was just
- 50:47Speaker 1: much different.
- 50:49Speaker 4: But it was.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Ultimately grateful that they were able to pull it off
- 50:54Speaker 1: and that we got to participate and that it actually happened.
- 50:58Speaker 1: I think that's that was that was awesome. But the
- 51:01Speaker 1: I mean, the village is always cool. You're around other
- 51:04Speaker 1: athletes that are at the highest of their their sport,
- 51:06Speaker 1: and we don't get to see that a lot, like
- 51:08Speaker 1: everyday training we're just folly ball only, and so seeing
- 51:11Speaker 1: that is really cool and seeing and being able to
- 51:14Speaker 1: watch other sports.
- 51:15Speaker 4: We actually didn't get to go to any of the sports,
- 51:16Speaker 4: which was weird.
- 51:17Speaker 1: I'm like, we're all in the village together and we're
- 51:20Speaker 1: far away in an event, like why can't we go watch?
- 51:22Speaker 1: Like doesn't make sense, so but we get watched on TV.
- 51:26Speaker 1: And so there's just like this camaraderie like with Team USA.
- 51:29Speaker 1: It's like, I don't know, it's it's something something indescribable
- 51:32Speaker 1: and really cool.
- 51:34Speaker 3: What athlete were you the most starstruck to meet?
- 51:39Speaker 4: Oh? I don't know.
- 51:45Speaker 1: I would probably say like Alison Felix, probably like she
- 51:48Speaker 1: she was, I know, she was on our bus too.
- 51:52Speaker 1: So it's really cool about the Olympics is that USA
- 51:55Speaker 1: has like a high performance training center.
- 51:57Speaker 4: So if most.
- 52:00Speaker 1: Delegations have their own performance their own training center, because
- 52:04Speaker 1: otherwise you're at the mercy of the Olympic Committee to
- 52:07Speaker 1: like organize stuff for you and sometimes it's not on
- 52:09Speaker 1: the timeframe that you want. So we're lucky that our
- 52:11Speaker 1: delegation is so big that we have our own facilities.
- 52:14Speaker 1: So she was actually on the bus to go to
- 52:17Speaker 1: the high Performance training center with us. But I mean,
- 52:20Speaker 1: you know, you just you want them to like have
- 52:22Speaker 1: their space and like, you know, act like.
- 52:24Speaker 4: You're part you're like part of it. I mean, I
- 52:26Speaker 4: mean you are.
- 52:27Speaker 1: But it's like we're very different levels, you know, so
- 52:30Speaker 1: you know, we're all just like too scared, but like,
- 52:32Speaker 1: but who is it? Who that is? And yeah it
- 52:35Speaker 1: was it was cool.
- 52:36Speaker 2: You know It's crazy though, like if you for a
- 52:38Speaker 2: second take a step out of your body and understand
- 52:41Speaker 2: that you know, you have over one hundred thousand people
- 52:45Speaker 2: that follow you on social media, many of those like
- 52:48Speaker 2: young women who look up to you and your journey,
- 52:50Speaker 2: and if they had the chance to be sat on
- 52:53Speaker 2: a bus for a drive that takes too long, however long,
- 52:57Speaker 2: they would feel like the exact same way. Like what
- 52:59Speaker 2: do you you feel in these moments when you realize
- 53:03Speaker 2: that you are also someone not only of influence, but
- 53:06Speaker 2: that has the opportunity now through your platform, to inspire
- 53:09Speaker 2: so many Yeah.
- 53:10Speaker 4: For sure.
- 53:11Speaker 1: I it just makes me so much like so grateful,
- 53:14Speaker 1: and I think it's I think it's not funny because
- 53:19Speaker 1: that's not a great word to describe it, but just
- 53:23Speaker 1: like I feel just so much like I'm just Jordan,
- 53:26Speaker 1: you know, like I'm not Jordan Larsen VLL. I'm just
- 53:28Speaker 1: like a normal person and so like I love having
- 53:31Speaker 1: those conversations with people because I just think, hey, I
- 53:33Speaker 1: was in especially young girls and like I was in
- 53:35Speaker 1: your shoes at one point, like there, if you have
- 53:38Speaker 1: a dream, like, go for it, like you just never know,
- 53:41Speaker 1: and if you're willing to put in the time and effort,
- 53:43Speaker 1: like it could pay off, and if you if you
- 53:47Speaker 1: really work hard at it, like you could be sitting
- 53:49Speaker 1: here today too, Like I never thought that I at
- 53:52Speaker 1: the capacity that I yeah, okay, I wanted those things,
- 53:55Speaker 1: but gosh, to see where it's all come, Like, there's
- 53:59Speaker 1: no way I couldn't have even dreamed about it.
- 54:02Speaker 2: What was more intimidating walking out onto the floor for
- 54:08Speaker 2: the gold medal match or walking out to throw out
- 54:12Speaker 2: the first pitch at the Dodgers game.
- 54:19Speaker 4: I don't know if either.
- 54:20Speaker 1: Honestly, I think I'm like at the point in my
- 54:23Speaker 1: career where I'm just like, whatever happens to happens, you know,
- 54:26Speaker 1: like if you do, you know, if you mess up,
- 54:28Speaker 1: you mess up, and it's like is what it is.
- 54:30Speaker 1: But I will tell you something that's kind of cool,
- 54:32Speaker 1: not kind of cool, but just I can't believe that
- 54:36Speaker 1: I was kind of a mess before the gold medal match.
- 54:39Speaker 1: I'm not an emotional person. I don't cry often. It
- 54:44Speaker 1: takes a lot for me to get emotional, and I
- 54:47Speaker 1: think I cried more twenty four hours leading up to
- 54:50Speaker 1: the gold medal match than I think I have in.
- 54:51Speaker 4: My entire career. I was standing in the shower, I think,
- 54:55Speaker 4: just crying.
- 54:56Speaker 1: I look over at my teammate for Luca, who has
- 54:59Speaker 1: been my really good frien and for all the years
- 55:01Speaker 1: I've been on the national team, knowing that it's my
- 55:03Speaker 1: last to play with her, probably my last in the
- 55:05Speaker 1: USA uniform, and I just were riding into the gym
- 55:11Speaker 1: and I just I lose it and I'm like crying,
- 55:15Speaker 1: and Fluca's looking on me. She's like, what are you doing.
- 55:18Speaker 1: We're about to go play this match, like get you,
- 55:20Speaker 1: get your stuff together, and I'm just like, I don't
- 55:23Speaker 1: know what's happened to me.
- 55:24Speaker 4: I have no idea.
- 55:25Speaker 1: I just I think the weight of it, the I
- 55:29Speaker 1: just I couldn't keep it together, and it was it
- 55:33Speaker 1: was so surreal, so so crazy to me because I'm
- 55:36Speaker 1: just not that kind of person.
- 55:37Speaker 4: Ever.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Do you think it's mostly just the culmination of, like
- 55:42Speaker 2: we said, twenty two years of volleyball. I mean, this
- 55:46Speaker 2: was the one thing that you hadn't checked off yet.
- 55:48Speaker 2: The gold medal was the thing that you had to
- 55:51Speaker 2: check off on the Olympic stage.
- 55:52Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 55:55Speaker 1: And then I think it was just like I wanted
- 55:57Speaker 1: it so bad right Like it was just like, oh
- 56:00Speaker 1: if I if I could get that, and like and
- 56:03Speaker 1: to feel how I was feeling going into the Olympics,
- 56:05Speaker 1: like I didn't. I wasn't feeling super confident. I was
- 56:08Speaker 1: doubting a lot of things.
- 56:09Speaker 4: I was like all.
- 56:11Speaker 1: These things, like because I knew it was like this
- 56:13Speaker 1: is it, this is my last shot and it has
- 56:16Speaker 1: to be this way and you know it has to
- 56:18Speaker 1: be perfect.
- 56:19Speaker 4: And to like let go of that and like to
- 56:22Speaker 4: actually be in a spot where I had a shot,
- 56:24Speaker 4: It's like, WHOA.
- 56:26Speaker 2: Why did you feel like you were doubting yourself leading
- 56:29Speaker 2: up to it.
- 56:31Speaker 1: I So the one thing in volleyball that I'm probably
- 56:34Speaker 1: known most for is my ability to pass the ball.
- 56:37Speaker 1: And that my team was just serving me a lot
- 56:41Speaker 1: and I don't really see a lot of serves often,
- 56:43Speaker 1: and I was not holding up very well. I was shanking,
- 56:46Speaker 1: I was just not doing well for our team. And
- 56:50Speaker 1: I was chosen to play and start for our team,
- 56:52Speaker 1: and I was just like, man, I had better get
- 56:54Speaker 1: my stuff together because this can't show up at the Olympics,
- 56:57Speaker 1: and so I was really just nervous for that. I
- 57:01Speaker 1: was nervous that I had to be this like perfect,
- 57:04Speaker 1: you know, I had to kill every ball, I have
- 57:06Speaker 1: to do X, Y and Z, and it's just like
- 57:09Speaker 1: I got I had to get out of that headspace.
- 57:10Speaker 1: But I like kept going into that headspace and I'm
- 57:13Speaker 1: like why, why, why is this happening? And so I
- 57:17Speaker 1: just because I had really never felt that way before
- 57:20Speaker 1: and it was concerning to me a little bit.
- 57:23Speaker 2: Twenty two years of volleyball three Olympics. When you reflect
- 57:30Speaker 2: on this time period, what would you say one of
- 57:33Speaker 2: your greatest takeaways has been trust.
- 57:36Speaker 1: In the work that I have put in. I've done
- 57:40Speaker 1: it every day, and I think that's where ultimately I
- 57:42Speaker 1: settled going into Olympics. Like Jordan, why are you doubting yourself?
- 57:46Speaker 1: Like you've done this every day of your life and
- 57:49Speaker 1: to almost every day to the best of your ability,
- 57:52Speaker 1: So like you're you're ready, You're ready for this moment,
- 57:55Speaker 1: You're ready for this time, and to know that with
- 57:59Speaker 1: everything that ipproach in life, like if I put in
- 58:02Speaker 1: the time and dedication that I've done and dedicated to
- 58:04Speaker 1: the sport, like it's going to be okay, And I'm
- 58:09Speaker 1: just just so.
- 58:10Speaker 3: Grateful trusting in the training.
- 58:13Speaker 2: I mean, that's something that I hear a lot as
- 58:15Speaker 2: an avid runner and a marathon or I mean, you
- 58:17Speaker 2: go through in my case, three months plus of training
- 58:22Speaker 2: to lead up to one day. In your case, I
- 58:24Speaker 2: mean months and years of training to get to this
- 58:27Speaker 2: world stage.
- 58:28Speaker 3: It's a lot of pressure on that final day.
- 58:30Speaker 2: But I think you and I can both agree that
- 58:34Speaker 2: if you base the success of that entire journey on
- 58:37Speaker 2: this one moment, then maybe you're not interpreting the value
- 58:41Speaker 2: of the journey as to what it really is.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Very well said, I think I had to also get
- 58:47Speaker 1: to that point at this Olympics. Hey, if I don't
- 58:49Speaker 1: perform as I want or how I feel like this
- 58:52Speaker 1: should at, the outcome should be Am I going to
- 58:55Speaker 1: be okay?
- 58:55Speaker 4: And the question is the answer is yes.
- 58:58Speaker 1: Like it's like you said, if you feel like you've
- 59:01Speaker 1: done everything you can, you've prepared yourself and it doesn't
- 59:03Speaker 1: turn how it out, it's a learning experience. You take
- 59:06Speaker 1: something from it, you learn from it, you move on,
- 59:08Speaker 1: and that's what it is you set it to perfect example.
- 59:14Speaker 2: It's so interesting too because in reflecting just now, it
- 59:17Speaker 2: sounded very much like the lessons that you learned when
- 59:22Speaker 2: you split from your ex husband, right, Yeah, you had
- 59:25Speaker 2: to get to a point where you weren't angry with
- 59:29Speaker 2: yourself about maybe things not going the way that the
- 59:33Speaker 2: storybook would go, right, And that's not easy.
- 59:37Speaker 4: No, definitely not. Yeah.
- 59:39Speaker 1: Nobody like nobody gets married hoping that they get divorced,
- 59:42Speaker 1: like nobody wants that, right, it's not, you know, And
- 59:46Speaker 1: nobody puts in the time. They want to be successful
- 59:48Speaker 1: at what they do and fail, you know. Nobody wants that.
- 59:50Speaker 1: They want the Cinderella story, you know. But sometimes it
- 59:54Speaker 1: doesn't end up like that. But I still think there's
- 59:56Speaker 1: lessons to be learned and things to get better at,
- 59:58Speaker 1: and time to put in to make it worth it,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: because it really is.
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: And yes, it really is.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: So I referenced to four having over one hundred thousand
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: people following me on social media. Let me correct myself.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: We're at one hundred and thirty nine thousand and growing.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: Right now. Someone comes to your.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Page, they see a newly married American volleyball player, a
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Nike athlete, a three time Olympic medalist. You look in
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: the mirror what is it that you see looking back
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: at you?
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: Oh?
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Wow, you you asked such great questions, and I want
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: to ask you questions. I love getting to know why
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: you podcasts.
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: Okay, okay, all right, right.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I see a young girl that just was willing to
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: do whatever it took and trusted the process and trusted
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: the work ethic, and trusted those around her to be
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: sitting in this chair today and to have a pretty
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: cool journey.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Something we didn't touch on yet is that you were
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: the captain of the team for you, beyond the title.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: What does that really mean?
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: I think, like you said to me, it was just
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: always a title. Like I always try to be really
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: authentic to who I was, and I think the older
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I got in my career, I had to learn to
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: be more of a vocal leader. I think in the past,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: I was always more of a leader by action, my
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: work ethic, how I showed up to the gym, how
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: I got after and practice, how I did X, Y
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: and Z. But as I've gotten older, I've had to
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: learn of how do I get to know my teammates
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: and understand what makes them the best version of themselves
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: and how can I adapt to them to make to
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: get the best out of them, and that's getting to
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: know them off the court and.
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: Building that part of it.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: And so I've really tried to expand that captainship and
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: that leadership role. But ultimately, like you said, it is
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: just a title. But I've just tried to be authentic
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: to who I am.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: It's so interesting because I'm about to do something that
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: I've never done because you expressed interest in doing this,
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: So I'm going to allow you the opportunity to ask
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: me a question. But in doing this, I also understand
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: that you've been kind of like flying by the seat
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: of your pants answering all my questions for the last
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: hour or so.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: I feel like there's a lot of pressure with me
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: handing you like your own microphone.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: So I'm just I'm gonna take a seat back for
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: a second, and I'm gonna let you ask me something.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: I think that's sometimes where I not struggle with podcasts
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: because I love them and I think they're so great
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: and I love having the cop but I think it
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: should be more of a conversation, right and it is,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: But like, why are you getting into this space of
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: being a podcast and why do you want to continue
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: to to kind of navigate through this space and what
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: got you you tobe this point.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Like, Okay, well this would be a whole lot of
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: sixty minute episode yea. For more context, Jordan, I'll send
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: you episode one of the show. But what I will
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: say is you asked me, like, why do I keep going?
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: So to speak?
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: And I think that as someone who has made it
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: her mission to like help people in community and empower
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: them on their journeys to feel less alone, I keep
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: going because I know what it feels like to feel alone.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: I back in college, had my own fair share of
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: struggles and felt.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Really lonely on my journey to learning who I was.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: I waited a lot more at the time and felt really.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: Just beside myself because I didn't feel at home in
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: my body.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: And so for me to now be in a place
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: where I've defined what healthy looks like for me, and
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: that includes pizza Friday, and it also includes running marathons
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: when I'm off the injured list, I know that the
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: power in that, and I know how great it is
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: to get to a place where you feel confident in
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: knowing what balance looks like for you. And I know
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: that I have the opportunity through these conversations with women
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: like yourself to help people figure out how to do that,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: how to do that too. And so I take a
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: lot of joy in that, and I take a lot
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: of pride in that, and I think about the things
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: that I like to do most in my life, and
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: I'm so lucky, beyond lucky, and so grateful that having
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: these conversations is something that I can do for work too.
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: Yeah, No, that's amazing.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: And like I think you asked me a couple of
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: times what got me out of that space? And what
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: do you feel like has gotten you the most out
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: of that space? And like to get you to like
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: you said to this point, like is it journaling?
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: Is it?
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: How how did you?
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: I think something that I have done but maybe have
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: gotten even better at doing is in my journey of
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: independence and coming into my home and feeling really confident
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: by myself. I've also learned the importance of asking for help.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: And I think so many of us feel as though
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: maybe we're doing something wrong when we look for outside
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: guidance or we feel as though we're messing up. When
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: you reach out to a friend and you're like, hey,
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: I kind of need you right now, because so many
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: of us don't want to feel like it's an inconvenience, right,
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: And so for me, what helps me on my mission
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: to help other people is being okay with asking for
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: help and knowing that that doesn't make me any lesser
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: than And that doesn't mean that I'm not okay on
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: my own. It just means that, like I need support,
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: and the fact is is that we all need support.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: I mean, of course the things that we mentioned, like journaling.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Journaling is a huge tool for me, but sometimes you
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: just need a little bit more, and it's okay to
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: need more. It's okay to want more, and to remove
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: that judgment from that space, like it changes absolutely everything.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: I did want to ask you before I ask you
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: the final question you mentioned right now, navigating a little
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: bit of an achilles situation.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Can you talk to me a little bit about that.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Yeah, So kind of when I came started this summer,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: I was just having like a little bit of Achilles pain,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Like I didn't know what it was. Like I thought
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: it was tape because I tape my ankles every day,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: but it just wasn't going away, and so we had
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: to like change my taping and then I still was
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: having some issues and starting some antim inmplammatories and that
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: seemed to help.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: But I still I kind of have a bump on
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: the back of my achilles.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: I'm not sure what it's from, but every time I
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: go to like really extend or push off of it,
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: it's just super tender. So I met with the trainer
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: and she's like, knowing your age and just kind of
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: I was.
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: Like, my age, Oh my god, I'm so young.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: No, no, no, so I just I actually got an
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: MRIA yesterday just to make sure that we have the
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: proper treatment plan, and I kind of that in place,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: but I don't know the results yet, so I'm waiting
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: on that.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: I know, I know anticipation, but oh.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: My god, you'll have to fill me in.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Honestly, I think it's just like we're and tear over.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: Like I think, just yeah, dumping a lot, and you know,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: I have my.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: God, the body is like such a thing. It's such
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: a beautiful thing. It can also be such like a
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: scary thing. We want all of the answers, we have
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: none of the answers. I get it.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: I sympathize, all right, all right.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: Last question here, Okay, right, now, you have an opportunity
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: to offer the Jordan going through her divorce trying to
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: navigate living somewhere unfamiliar, a piece of advice looking back
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: on that hurdle moment right now, what do you tell her.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: Piece of advice? I think just continuing to stay.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: I keep saying that present like as much as like
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: wake up in the morning, enjoy breakfast, enjoy lunch, enjoy
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: coffee in the afternoon, like you said, asking for help,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: just being okay and almost sitting in it, like that's
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: that phrase sounds so weird, but like sitting in those
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: feelings and like unpacked what's really going on, because that's
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: when you're going to get to the root of it.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: But I think it takes time and it's not going
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: to happen overnight. And but knowing on the other end
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: of it again like it's going to all work out.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: I love that.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Two things that someone said to me once, one was
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: be where your feet are. And the second thing that
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: I always think about when I feel like I'm getting
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: a little worked up and I'm having trouble staying in
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: the moment is come back to calm amen. I always,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: I always, always, always try to come back to calm. Jordan,
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: thank you so much for your time and your takeaways.
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: How do the hurdlers keep up with you? How do
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: they fall along with you? Give us all the details.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, thanks thanks for having me on. Yeah.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: My Instagram handle is gov ten zero seven random. Yeah,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: so my nickname is called the Governor because my best
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: friend Feluca, we were in Taile. This is kind of
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: a long story in Thailand. There's a Nebraska fan there.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: She's like, the guy's like, I know your dad, and
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Luca's like seriously, and they're Husker fans everywhere, and so
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: she told her brother and her brother is like, yeah,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: I mean she's like the Governor. So then I said
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: it as a joke and now it's just become a thing.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: So that's theme part of the brand, so that they
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: call me gov. And then that's kind of the rest
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: of history. And then I am on Facebook. Still I
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: don't think Facebook's a thing much anymore. And then I
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: have Twitter as well. Jordan Larcenton is my Twitter handle,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: so love it.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: I'm over at MLA Body and at Hurdle Podcast Another
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Hurdle Conquered.
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: Catch you guys next time.
