- 0:00If you turn your Bibles to Psalm one O 2, as I was preparing this
- 0:04Psalm, I read 1 commentator, He's a Baptist preacher from
- 0:07England. And he made a, he made a point.
- 0:10The Psalm is about the afflicted one's prayer.
- 0:13That's our title tonight. And maybe you're afflicted and
- 0:15you can relate to Psalm one O 2. But the the author made a very
- 0:20good point that he feels our society is obsessively concerned
- 0:25about health. What do you think?
- 0:27And I thought about that and he made a point that every article
- 0:31that appears in the New England Journal of Medicine becomes
- 0:34immediately front page news. You know, 111 article coffee is
- 0:39bad for you, the next article coffee is good for you.
- 0:43And then every diet becomes a best selling book.
- 0:46I guess the latest one is intermittent fasting and plant
- 0:50based eating, if you're on that. And every exercise fad goes
- 0:54viral, right? The 1000 steps has been replaced
- 0:58by the 15 minute workout. That's the one I do not working
- 1:00though. And then social media, everybody
- 1:04who's got a iPhone or a Samsung, you can literally Google and
- 1:08know, you think you know as much as your doctor does and you're
- 1:12experts in everything. And then there's the Wellness
- 1:14industry that's exploded and they're promoting all these new
- 1:17medicines, right? I tried that new one, Prevagen.
- 1:20Anybody tried that? Supposed to make your brain
- 1:22smarter. I tried it for three months.
- 1:24I don't think it works. I think I got Dumber but wasted
- 1:27my money. And then of course, there's a
- 1:29disease prevention to get the latest vaccine.
- 1:32When I go pick up my daughter's vaccine or my daughter's
- 1:35prescriptions at the at CVS, they asked me, do you have the,
- 1:40did you get the new RSV or the new PCV?
- 1:42And I don't even know what those are.
- 1:44And she said, what's the, I can't even pronounce it.
- 1:47The pneumococcal conjugate virus or the respiratory synthesis
- 1:53virus can't pronounce them. I'm not sure I want them.
- 1:56But I guess they have 21 different virus shots at CVS
- 2:00now. And of course, we have a
- 2:02society. People have the right to to live
- 2:05forever. You know, that actress Susan
- 2:07Somers was big on that, but she died last year, right?
- 2:11And of course, you have false churches with false teachers and
- 2:14faith healing. You know, we support a pastor in
- 2:17Uganda. And imagine how hard it is for
- 2:19Pastor Kizza. Benny Hinn was in Uganda last
- 2:22week and in three days he had half a million people, three day
- 2:28three, three crusading, half a million.
- 2:31And even the president of the country, President Mousavini was
- 2:34on stage with him, half a million people there.
- 2:37And they claim thousands of miracles which none of them can
- 2:39be proved. So you can imagine being a
- 2:41pastor like Jotham Kizza, the one we support, having to deal
- 2:44with all that there. But when the church gets into
- 2:48demands for healing, as many churches have, what this is, is
- 2:53an invasion of Christianity by the world's way of thinking,
- 2:56right? God can and does heal, but not
- 3:00on demand by these so-called faith healers.
- 3:03God doesn't actually owe us perfect health.
- 3:06That comes when we will be in heaven.
- 3:09When you'll be glorified, you will have a new body, perfect in
- 3:12health with no sin, no stain. And often I think many of you
- 3:16can relate to this. Ill health draws us to God.
- 3:20It puts us on our knees, right? Tonight we're going to look at a
- 3:23psalmist who turns his thoughts from his circumstances, and he
- 3:28turned his thoughts upon God and his attributes.
- 3:31Who wrote Psalm one O 2? We don't know, but it could have
- 3:35been any one of the numbers of people in the Bible.
- 3:38You know, it wasn't Job. But Job lost his family, right?
- 3:41Job lost his wealth, his health, and his three friends weren't
- 3:46really friends at all. Moses, he spent 40 years in the
- 3:49wilderness, LED 2,000,000 disgruntled Jews to the Promised
- 3:53Land, and then he disobeyed God one time and got barred from
- 3:57entering the Promised Land. Joseph was hated by his
- 4:00brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, sitting in a
- 4:06dungeon, and even then he was forgotten by the the cupbearer
- 4:10when he interpreted his dream. Hannah had to wait year after
- 4:14year to have a baby. Jewish tradition tells us it was
- 4:1719 years, and every one of those 19 years she was being insulted
- 4:22by her sister, by her. The other wife.
- 4:25David was anointed king, but he had to wait 13 years being
- 4:29haunted like a dog by King Saul. Elijah thought he was the only
- 4:33holy man left in all of Israel and he wanted to die.
- 4:37Jeremiah faithfully preached and no one listened for 40 years and
- 4:42he ended up sitting in a cistern in mud.
- 4:46Daniel faithfully prayed and obeyed God but when the when the
- 4:52the laws of the land changed and forbid praying he continued to
- 4:55pray and ended up in a lion's pit.
- 4:58Paul sat in a Roman jail for maybe four to six years of his
- 5:03life. The apostle John at a very old
- 5:05age was expelled to a not so nice island called Patmos.
- 5:10So we don't know who the writer of Psalm One O 2 is, but it
- 5:14could have been any number of men suffering.
- 5:16We have a superscription, very long one.
- 5:19It says the prayer of 1 afflicted when he is faint and
- 5:23pours out his complaint before the Lord.
- 5:25And maybe some of you can relate to that.
- 5:28Psalm One O 2, by the way, is one of the penitential Psalms.
- 5:32You know, we've talked a lot about that.
- 5:34We already looked at, we looked at, we've looked at Psalm 6IN
- 5:39past years. Psalms 32 Psalms 50.
- 5:41So there's seven of them and they're, they're not used much
- 5:45by the Protestant Church, but they were the seven penitential
- 5:50psalms or called Psalms of confession were listed in the
- 5:556th century and the Catholic Church uses them during Lent.
- 5:59What's interesting though, is Psalm one O 2.
- 6:02There's no mention of sin, there's no iniquity or
- 6:06confession of sin. Yet it's one of the penitential
- 6:08Psalms, and I always wondered why it was.
- 6:11It does mention God's wrath and his anger in verse 10.
- 6:14So the afflicted 1 here is not, and we'll talk about it, is not
- 6:20afflicted by His own sin. It's the sin of Israel, the
- 6:22nation. This Psalm, it's the first Psalm
- 6:25we looked at this summer. It's in Book 4.
- 6:27You know, there are five books. Book 4 only has 17 Psalms and
- 6:32most rabbis believe that the five books of the Psalms
- 6:36correspond to the five books of the Torah.
- 6:39So book 4 would correspond to the book of Numbers which is the
- 6:42book of wandering. And a lot of the psalms in book
- 6:454 like this one are wandering. The Babylonian captivity has
- 6:49come so saw the history about it.
- 6:52Psalms One O 2 was written during a low ebb in the history
- 6:55of God's people. It's setting is during the
- 6:58Babylonian captivity of God's chosen people.
- 7:01Israel is a time when God's work has seemingly come to a
- 7:04standstill. It's a time when God's word was
- 7:07not being preached, when God's people were the minority.
- 7:11It was a time when God's house lay in ruin, when God's holy
- 7:15city was in shambles, when God's glory was veiled.
- 7:19It's a Psalm that begins with despair but concludes with a
- 7:23note of triumph. There is always hope in the
- 7:26ongoing sovereignty of God over His people.
- 7:29I hope you have an outline. And tonight I'm going to read.
- 7:32I'm not going to read all 28 verses right away.
- 7:35Some of your thinking. Last week's Psalm was only 7
- 7:38verses. How is he going to get through
- 7:3928 verses tonight? I won't be going that deep, but
- 7:42we will look at it. So let's look at point #1 the
- 7:45psalmist despair. And let's read verses 1 to 11 in
- 7:49that point. Hear my prayer, O Lord, let my
- 7:53cry come to you. Do not hide your face from me in
- 7:56the day of my distress. Incline Your ear to me.
- 7:59Answer me speedily in the day when I call, For my days passed
- 8:04away like smoke, and my bones burn like a furnace.
- 8:07My heart is struck down like grass and has withered.
- 8:11I forgot to eat my bread because of my loud groaning.
- 8:14My bones cling to my flesh. I'm like a desert owl of the
- 8:18wilderness, Like an owl of the waste places I lie awake, I'm
- 8:22like a lonely Sparrow on the housetop.
- 8:25All the day my enemies taught me Those who deride me use my name
- 8:29for a curse. For I eat ashes like bread and
- 8:33mingle tears with my drink because of your indignation and
- 8:36anger. For you have taken me up and
- 8:38thrown me down. My days are like an evening
- 8:41shadow. I wither away like the grass.
- 8:44Let's pray Father, I pray tonight that if there's anybody
- 8:47here who's suffering, anybody going through trials, whether
- 8:51they be health wise, finances, job, family, that Father, they
- 8:55could relate to this psalmist, that we could cry out to you.
- 8:59And we know you hear our prayers, but then that we would
- 9:01focus our thoughts on You in Jesus name, Amen.
- 9:06So the Psalmist despair verse is 1 to 11.
- 9:10Let's look at .1. The psalmist despairs.
- 9:12You know these first 11 verses are just a cry, a cry of
- 9:15lamentation for God to comfort and help the psalmist.
- 9:20I don't know if you noticed, but the personal pronouns jump out
- 9:24the page. The word me is listed seven
- 9:28times. The word I is listed 7 times,
- 9:32and then you have the word my, which is an adjective 14 times.
- 9:37So between the me I and my in verses 1 to 11, I count 28
- 9:43times. So you see how it's a very, very
- 9:46personal Psalm. God's name is only mentioned
- 9:49once in verses 1 to 11, yet we'll see compared to that in
- 9:53verses 12 to 22 later. So some point #1 hear my prayer,
- 9:58He says, hear my prayer. O Lord, let my cry come to You.
- 10:01The psalmist is crying out like he wants a speedy answer, and
- 10:05haven't we talked a lot about that this summer?
- 10:08Remember, Psalms 5 begins with the words.
- 10:11Give ear to my words. O Lord, consider my groaning.
- 10:15Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for
- 10:19to you do I pray. And then remember Psalm 27.
- 10:22Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious and answer me.
- 10:27Psalms 44 we looked at says rise up, come to our help, redeem us
- 10:32for the sake of your steadfast love.
- 10:34Psalm 79 we looked at and it says in verse nine, help us, O
- 10:38God, of our salvation, for the glory of your name, deliver us
- 10:42atone for our sins for your name's sake.
- 10:45And just a couple weeks ago we looked at Psalms 86, and it
- 10:48began with incline your ear, O Lord, answer me, for I am poor
- 10:53and needy. So the psalmist is going to say
- 10:55a couple of things. He's going to say turn your face
- 10:57to me and turn your ear to me to God.
- 11:01He says, turn your face to me. He says do not hide your face
- 11:03from me in the day of my distress.
- 11:06You know, during the days of Jeremiah, when Jeremiah preached
- 11:10faithfully for so many years and nobody had listened, the Jewish
- 11:13leaders refused to acknowledge that God's punishment would
- 11:17include Judah being captured, the temple being destroyed and
- 11:22Jerusalem being sacked. But all three of those things
- 11:25happen. Israel had no king.
- 11:28They had no priest, they had no temple, and they and he could
- 11:32not sacrifice for the sins. So instead of the Lord's face
- 11:36shining upon Israel, the psalmist is saying it seems like
- 11:39God has turned his face away from Israel.
- 11:42AW Tozer said the greatest test of faith is to wait on God, not
- 11:48expecting to push a button and get whatever we want.
- 11:52And this psalmist may have cried out and he may have never had
- 11:55this prayer answered because God, who's going to punish
- 11:58Israel for 70 years? And we don't know when this
- 12:01Psalm was written within that time.
- 12:04So he says then he says turn your ear to me.
- 12:07He says in last part of verse 2, incline your ear to me.
- 12:10Doesn't that sound familiar? We looked at Psalms 86.1 and
- 12:15it's 15 times in the Psalms. The psalmist will cry out,
- 12:18incline your ear to me. God doesn't actually have an
- 12:21ear. He's omnipotent, omniscient, and
- 12:23he knows all things and He's everywhere.
- 12:25So He doesn't have any ear. He's a spirit.
- 12:28But you know, I think when I pray, I usually pray, you know,
- 12:32dear Heavenly Father, and then I ask God my request.
- 12:35But you notice here he has three words for prayer.
- 12:39He calls it prayer. He calls it a cry and he calls
- 12:42it a call and then he uses 5 verbs.
- 12:46And this is what I found so interesting.
- 12:47He says here, let do incline an answer to cry out to the
- 12:54compassionate God. So maybe when we face trouble
- 12:59when we have a trial suffering, when we have health or financial
- 13:03problems, the first thing we may not we maybe we shouldn't do is
- 13:07just say, dear heavenly Father, maybe we ought to say what the
- 13:11psalmist said. Hear my prayer, O Lord, let my
- 13:15cry come to you. Do not hide your face from me.
- 13:19Incline your ear to me answeringly, speedily when I
- 13:24call Spurgeon called this arguing with God, debating with
- 13:27God. And I really love that.
- 13:29And it's taught me a lot this summer because most of the
- 13:32psalms that we've done these last nine weeks have been
- 13:35prayers right. The number at some point to see
- 13:38my plight, verses 3 to 11, the psalmist is going to give the
- 13:42circumstances for his suffering and it reads like the book of
- 13:46Job in miniature in in just 9 verses.
- 13:50It's like the book of Job. Some commentators feel the
- 13:53psalmist knew and reflected upon Job when he wrote this Psalm.
- 13:58So I'll go quickly through these.
- 13:59The first thing he says is in verse 3, my days are vanishing.
- 14:03He says for my days are like smoke.
- 14:06The psalmist is going to use many metaphors here for
- 14:09expressions of personal anguish and pain and grief.
- 14:12So first he compares his life to like smoke.
- 14:16And you know, smoke is thick at first, but eventually it fades
- 14:19away when the wind comes. So it's possible that he's
- 14:22riding this amongst the burn ruins of Jerusalem after
- 14:27Nebuchadnezzar has destroyed and he's been left behind.
- 14:31Second thing he says in the latter part of verse 3 is my
- 14:34bones are burning. The psalmist feels like he's
- 14:37been, he's been a thorn thrown in a fire and his life is
- 14:41vanishing like smoke. The third thing he says is his
- 14:44heart is struck down like the grass, grass that's withered.
- 14:48And he says I forgot to eat my bread.
- 14:51The psalmist is sick and he cannot eat.
- 14:54His heart is dried up like a plant withered by the sun.
- 14:59The fourth thing he says is my groaning is loud.
- 15:02He says because my loud groaning, my bones cling to my
- 15:05flesh, He has no appetite. His body is deterring your way.
- 15:11He's reduced to skin and bones much like Job.
- 15:14Right next he says in verse 6 my life is ruined.
- 15:19It's interesting. In verse 6 he lists 2 unclean
- 15:22birds. He says I'm like a desert owl or
- 15:25like an owl of the waste places. And verse 7 he says I'm like a
- 15:28lonely Sparrow. So the psalmist has no delight
- 15:31in life, and he compares himself to three unclean birds that are
- 15:35listed in Leviticus that you're not to eat.
- 15:38But these birds generally live in the wilderness.
- 15:40Now, translators have a problem with it says desert owl in my
- 15:45English standard version. Some of you using, many of you
- 15:48using the New American Standard have the word Pelican.
- 15:51Well, if that's true, a Pelican is a sea bird and it's out of
- 15:54place in the desert, right? So the owl should not be in the
- 15:58desert. The owl should be in the forest,
- 16:00not waste places. And then the lonely Sparrow in
- 16:03verse 7 should be with a flock of birds, right?
- 16:06Not all sitting alone. So it's a picture of the
- 16:09psalmist living in solitary confinement, perhaps no friends.
- 16:14Perhaps his family has been killed.
- 16:16He feels isolated and lonely. You know, when I was thinking of
- 16:19this, I can't, it came up that that hymn, his eyes on the
- 16:23Sparrow, you've got this lonely Sparrow.
- 16:26And that hymn was written by Sevilla de Martin who was
- 16:31inspired by the story of a couple.
- 16:33One of the couple was bedridden and the other couple partner was
- 16:37in a wheelchair. Yet despite being bedridden in a
- 16:40wheelchair, they maintain a joyful spirit despite their
- 16:44circumstances. But the psalmist here, he
- 16:47doesn't think that God's eye is is on him.
- 16:50Next he says in verse 7, my sleep is gone.
- 16:54The psalmist lies awake all night.
- 16:56He can't sleep, He can't get any comfort, he's tormented by being
- 17:00struck alone and isolated. He's physically sick and he's
- 17:05mentally sick. Next in verse 8 he says all my
- 17:09enemies taught me. Those who derived me use my name
- 17:11for a curse. This is 1 of the 75 psalms that
- 17:15mention enemies. So half of the 150 psalms.
- 17:19There is something going on with enemies and this is one of them.
- 17:23No suffering. You all know suffering is
- 17:25difficult, right? But it's worse when you have
- 17:29problem with family members or some enemies or insurance not
- 17:33helping you or things like that. So the psalmist here is not
- 17:37getting any sympathy from enemies, but they're actually
- 17:40cursing him, his God in his name.
- 17:43So physical suffering is bad enough, but people can make it
- 17:47worse. So this Psalm, as I mentioned,
- 17:50is written after the Babylonian or during the Babylonian
- 17:53captivity. And maybe, just maybe he's in
- 17:56Jerusalem and those three enemies of Nehemiah, Tobiah,
- 18:00sand below and geisha, remember those in Nehemiah, maybe these
- 18:05are his enemies there. If he's in Jerusalem, we don't
- 18:07know. But those were the enemies who
- 18:09would laugh and mock and say, where is your God?
- 18:12Where is your God next? He says in verse 9 to 10, my
- 18:16food is sorrow. He says I eat ashes like bread,
- 18:20mingle tears with my drink. Because of your Indonesia and
- 18:23anger, you have taken me up and thrown me down.
- 18:26Have you ever been through a rough patch?
- 18:27I'm sure all of us can relate to it, right?
- 18:30And there's times when when you're going through a difficult
- 18:33time and you're just not hungry. I don't care how good the cook
- 18:36is or how good the food is. You just, you don't have the
- 18:39taste to eat because you're, you're just sorrowful.
- 18:42You just, you don't have that appetite.
- 18:44And I mentioned Psalms one O 2 is one of the seven penitential
- 18:47Psalms, but it doesn't mention sin or confession of sin.
- 18:51So most commentators believe the psalmist is suffering
- 18:54innocently. God is punishing Israel for the
- 18:5770 years he allowed Nebuchadnezzar to just destroy
- 19:01Jerusalem to burn the temple down.
- 19:03So Israel is being judged, but it's probably not for the
- 19:06psalmist sin, but for the sins of Israel.
- 19:09He finally describes his condition as God like God in a
- 19:13hurricane, taking him and throwing him down like a rag
- 19:15doll. And then verse 11, he says, my
- 19:19days are like the evening shadow.
- 19:21I wither away like grass. So it's like the sun going down
- 19:26and darkness falling on the psalmist.
- 19:28He has little hope. His life is having a way.
- 19:31You know what I was thinking of this last year?
- 19:34Pastor Lance taught the book of Job and I thought it was one of
- 19:37the the best teachings I've ever heard 30 messages of.
- 19:40If you want to listen to it online or get the tapes, you
- 19:42can. But there was one time he said
- 19:44that we need to be wise about our suffering and trials.
- 19:49And Lance said that ever evitable, never enjoyable,
- 19:54however always purposeful and profitable are trials.
- 19:59Now you may not like that. And Lance listed a bunch of
- 20:01verses. He listed Job 51.
- 20:04But man is born to trouble. As sparks fly upward, trouble
- 20:09just comes right. You, you, you can't avoid it.
- 20:12Job 14, one man who was born of a woman is few of days and full
- 20:17of trouble. James 1-2 to three.
- 20:21Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various
- 20:25kinds. For you know that the testing of
- 20:27your faith produces steadfastness.
- 20:30Second Corinthians 4 verses 7:00 and 8:00 But we have this
- 20:34treasure in jars of clay to show that surpassing power belongs to
- 20:39God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way,
- 20:43but not crushed, perplexed but not driven to despair,
- 20:48persecuted but not forsaken, struck down but not destroyed.
- 20:53And then the last two are from first Peter chapter 4, verse 12.
- 20:57Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes
- 21:01upon you to test you as though something strange were happening
- 21:07to you. And then the next verse is first
- 21:09Peter 413 says, But rejoice insofar as you share in Christ's
- 21:15sufferings, that you also rejoice and be glad when his
- 21:19glory is revealed. You know, you can't help think
- 21:23of Isaiah 53, four to six when I look at this.
- 21:28He was one who suffered immensely 700 years before the
- 21:32Messiah would come and go to the cross.
- 21:35Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 53, four to six and just listen to
- 21:39the words. Surely He has borne our griefs,
- 21:42carried our sorrows, yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten
- 21:47by God, afflicted. He was pierced for our
- 21:50transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities.
- 21:53Upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and by
- 21:56His wounds we are are all healed.
- 21:59All we, like sheep, have gone astray.
- 22:01We have turned everyone to his own way, and the Lord has laid
- 22:05on him the iniquity of us all. Let's look at point #2 and I'm
- 22:10going to read verses 12 to 22. This is paragraph 2.
- 22:14But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever.
- 22:17You are remembered throughout all generations.
- 22:20You will arise and have pity on Zion.
- 22:23It is the time to favor her. The appointed time has come for
- 22:27Your servants. Hold her stones dear and have
- 22:29pity on her dust. Nations will fear the name of
- 22:33the Lord, and all the kings of the earth will fear Your glory.
- 22:37For the Lord builds up Zion. He appears in His glory.
- 22:40He regards the prayer of the destitute, and does not despise
- 22:44their prayer. Let this be a record for a
- 22:46generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may
- 22:50praise the Lord, that he looked down from his holy height.
- 22:53From heaven. The Lord looked at the earth to
- 22:57hear the groans of the prisoners to set those who are doomed to
- 23:00die, that they may declare in Zion the name of the Lord and in
- 23:04Jerusalem His praise when peoples gather together and
- 23:07kingdoms to worship the Lord. So this is called the psalmist
- 23:12devotion. And notice how verse 12 begins.
- 23:15Total contrast shift from verses 1:00 to 11:00.
- 23:19But you, but you, he's talking to God.
- 23:23So it marks a chance for the psalmist attitude to change.
- 23:27And he turns from his problems and he turns to God in heaven.
- 23:32And I think that's the one big take we have to take from this
- 23:34Psalm tonight. No matter what trial you're
- 23:37going through, no matter what persecution, what suffering,
- 23:40what disease you're going through, you have to get your
- 23:43eyes off of that trial and look and say, but you and talk to God
- 23:49and list out his attributes and it gets gets the problem off
- 23:53you. Warren Weirsby said the throne
- 23:56of David was gone and would not be claimed until Jesus came to
- 24:01earth, but the throne in heaven was secure.
- 24:05Notice the change in verses 1 to 11.
- 24:08We see 28 personal pronouns and objectives, my, me, I but in,
- 24:15but in verses 12 to 22, zero. That's because this section is
- 24:21all about God. His name is Yahweh and it's
- 24:25mentioned 7 times Yahweh in verses 12 to 22 and only once in
- 24:31verses 1 to 11. So after listing 9 circumstances
- 24:35of suffering, the psalmist will begin to fix his eyes on Yahweh
- 24:40and who he is. And #1 he looks at God's
- 24:44eternality for God's eternality. In verse 12 he says that God
- 24:48abides forever, but you, O Lord, are enthroned forever.
- 24:53God is eternal. Moses said it.
- 24:55You know Moses wrote Psalm 90, the only Psalm that Moses wrote,
- 24:59which might just be the oldest scripture written if Moses wrote
- 25:02it before Genesis, Exos, Leviticus, Numbers, and
- 25:04Deuteronomy. But Psalms 91 says Lord, you
- 25:07have been been our dwelling places in all generations before
- 25:12the mountains were brought forth or ever you had formed the earth
- 25:15and the world from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
- 25:19God abides forever, and then God abides to all generations.
- 25:24He says you are remembered through all generations.
- 25:28G Campbell Morgan said there's nothing more calculated to
- 25:31strengthen the heart in suffering or inspire the Spirit
- 25:35with courage in the days of danger and difficulty than the
- 25:39sense of the eternality of God. When you think about the
- 25:43eternality of God, who he is, I, My problems are so minuscule, so
- 25:50minor, and I know how it ends in the Book of Revelation.
- 25:54And then next, God's pity, verses 13 to 14, God's going to
- 25:59have compassion. God's going to be gracious and
- 26:02God's going to give pleasure. First off, he's going to have
- 26:05compassion. He says you notice how he talks
- 26:08you, you, you. I think I wrote it down.
- 26:10I'm not sure, maybe 6 times you in these sections.
- 26:15So even though he mentions Yahweh 7 times, he says you,
- 26:19you, you repeatedly, you will arise and have pity on Zion.
- 26:23So this is the first of three times Zion is mentioned.
- 26:26And last week we looked at Psalm 79, the Psalm of Zion.
- 26:30And so we talked a lot about Zion last week.
- 26:33But Zion is mentioned in verses 1316 and 21.
- 26:37And we talked about last week, God loves Zion and God wasn't
- 26:43finished with Israel, right? God made a covenant with Israel
- 26:46and he's not finished with Israel.
- 26:48He will fulfill that covenant. He will keep his promises.
- 26:51And after 70 years, God would stir up the heart of King Cyrus
- 26:56and there would be 3 returns back to Israel as there were
- 26:59three deportations. God will rebuild the city of
- 27:03Zion. Secondly, says it's time to
- 27:07favor her. The appointed time has come.
- 27:10So maybe this time of 70 years was almost done.
- 27:13We don't know exactly. And God's going to raise King
- 27:15Cyrus and allow the Jews to return.
- 27:18So he's begging that for God's favor to come.
- 27:21We know that that Daniel knew reading Jeremiah the 70 years.
- 27:26We don't know if the psalmist did, but maybe he did.
- 27:29And then verse 14, it says that for your servants, hold her
- 27:32stones dear, and we'll have pity on her dust.
- 27:35So here Nebuchadnezzar had reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
- 27:40You know when you read Psalm 74 verses two to seven just
- 27:44describes Jerusalem is just a pile of stones, but God loves
- 27:47Zion and God's in control and the temple in Jerusalem would be
- 27:52rebuilt. But not only does God love Zion,
- 27:55but the people of Jerusalem love the stones of Zion.
- 27:58He says Your servants hold her stones dear and have pity in her
- 28:01dust. And this verse reminds me of
- 28:04when they when they laid that temple foundation in Ezra
- 28:07chapter 3. It says in verse 10 all the
- 28:10people shouted with a great shout when they praise the Lord,
- 28:13because the foundation of the Lord has laid.
- 28:16But many of the priests and Levi's heads of the Father's
- 28:19houses, old men who had seen the 1st house, wept with a loud
- 28:23voice when they saw the foundation of this house being
- 28:26laid. Though many shouted aloud for
- 28:29joy, so that the people could not distinguish the sound of
- 28:32joyful shout from the sound of the people's weeping.
- 28:36For the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was
- 28:38heard far away. So you got people shouting for
- 28:41joy because the stones are being laid, and they got people
- 28:44weeping because the foundation isn't as grand as the last time.
- 28:48Next, verse 15. We have God's sovereignty.
- 28:52He says all nations will fear Him, and all kings will come to
- 28:57Him. He says nations will fear the
- 29:00name of the Lord. Then we looked at Psalm 87 last
- 29:03week, and we said in Psalm 86.9 that all the nations of the
- 29:07earth shall come and worship before You, O Lord, and shall
- 29:12glorify Your name. Some will come to the earthly
- 29:15Jerusalem. Many will come to the heavenly
- 29:18Jerusalem and the millennial Jerusalem.
- 29:21So the psalmist here is actually praying for the conversion of
- 29:25the Gentile nations. So the nations will come and
- 29:29then he says all the kings of the earth will fear your glory.
- 29:32So the kings are going to come. Psalms 138 verse 2 says all the
- 29:36kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord, for they
- 29:39have heard the words of your mouth.
- 29:41So someday, now, you know, I mentioned last week, you look at
- 29:45a map and there's 59 Islamic countries around Israel, and
- 29:49then you've got that little Israel right there.
- 29:51And most of those countries are enemies of Israel.
- 29:53But someday every one of those nations, all the King's rulers
- 29:57will come to the Messiah in Jerusalem and give him thanks
- 30:02and glory. Now verse 16, we talk about
- 30:04God's glory for God's glory here.
- 30:07For he has built up his 10th people and he has revealed his
- 30:10glory. He says the Lord builds up Zion.
- 30:13So the second time that Zion's mentioned, Alexander McLaren
- 30:16said Zion cannot die while Zion's God lives and God would
- 30:22keep his promises and his glory would return to Zion.
- 30:26And then he has revealed his glory.
- 30:29He says he appears in his glory. This is probably a prophecy of a
- 30:34future time when God's glory will be visible when the Messiah
- 30:38is at the temple in Jerusalem, because God's glory resides in
- 30:42the temple. That's the visible manifestation
- 30:45of God. And then we go to for God's
- 30:47faithfulness in verse 17, he will respond to the destitute
- 30:53and he will receive their plea. Verse 17 says he he regards the
- 30:58prayer of the destitute. AW Tozer said upon God's
- 31:04faithfulness rests our whole hope of future blessedness.
- 31:08Only as He is faithful will his covenant stand and his promises
- 31:12be honored. Only as we have complete
- 31:15assurance that he is faithful, may we live in peace and look
- 31:19forward with assurance of the life to come.
- 31:22You know, in verses one to two, I mentioned he gave 55 verbs
- 31:27demanding God to hear his prayer.
- 31:30The question is, did the psalmist, did God hear his
- 31:32prayer? I'll answer that in just a
- 31:34minute. But I do believe here when he
- 31:36says he regards the prayer of the destitute, he knows God will
- 31:39hear his prayer. He also says that he will
- 31:42receive their plea. He says and does not despise
- 31:45their prayer. You know, we sing a song here at
- 31:48Christ Community Church often called God is faithful.
- 31:51Remember that song, it's by Sovereign Grace Music and the
- 31:55chorus is just real simple. It's actually a chorus from
- 31:57Psalm 114. It says God is faithful to his
- 32:01promise. He is with us, He is with us.
- 32:05God is faithful. God is faithful to his own.
- 32:08So the psalmist is, is realizing just how faithful God is.
- 32:12Even though Jerusalem's in ruins, the temple's been
- 32:15destroyed, they can't sacrifice. There's just a few people left.
- 32:19And next number 6 for God's immutability.
- 32:23And in verse 18, he says his plan is recorded and his people
- 32:28will rejoice. He says let this be recorded for
- 32:30a generation to come. Now there's a 11 author said
- 32:36that you know, things aren't happening right now.
- 32:39The the temple is not being rebuilt.
- 32:41Nobody's come back from the three the three Cyrus hasn't set
- 32:46the three teams of people yet. He's just sitting around.
- 32:49So it's like God's not working. But one author said, no matter
- 32:53how impaired God's work may become, the immutability of God
- 32:57guarantees that his work will move forward in God's perfect
- 33:01time. Thus, there's always unshakable
- 33:05hope in the future. Immutability for those you don't
- 33:08know is God doesn't change. But God's immutability, His plan
- 33:12has been recorded. He's written it down.
- 33:15It will come to pass. He loves the nation of Israel
- 33:18and someday He will, He will redeem all Israel in Romans 9:00
- 33:23to 11:00. And then it says in the last
- 33:25part of verse 18, His people will rejoice, He says, so that a
- 33:29people yet to be created may praise the Lord.
- 33:33So maybe this psalmist in his pain and suffering didn't get to
- 33:37see the temple. I don't know, but maybe his
- 33:40children and his grandchildren did.
- 33:42A generation yet to come. One commentator said that when
- 33:46you are ill or severely afflicted, I'm going to go see
- 33:51Larry Arvis. And you know, you know, he fell
- 33:53off a ladder and broke his ankle.
- 33:54And I'm going to lecture him not to get on a ladder at age 91
- 33:57anymore. But this guy says when you're
- 34:00ill or severely afflicted, write a journal of praise to pass on
- 34:04to children and grandchildren. And Larry is just such a joyful
- 34:07person, isn't he? It would be a perfect one for
- 34:09him to do that. Let's look at #7 for God's
- 34:12sensitivity, He looks down from heaven.
- 34:15Verse 19 says he looked down from his holy height, from the
- 34:19heaven. The Lord looked at earth.
- 34:21The omniscient God of the universe doesn't actually have
- 34:24to look down. But you know, he looked down at
- 34:26Sodom and Gomorrah. He looked down at at the Tower
- 34:30of Babel, and he's looked down several times.
- 34:33So he looks down from heaven and it says he hears their groans.
- 34:36Are these prisoners? Are they the Babylonian captives
- 34:40who were taken to Babylon? So maybe this, this Psalm was
- 34:43written when Jerusalem was still burning and, and just been
- 34:47destroyed. And all these captives are on
- 34:49their way to Jerusalem. And then he says to set free
- 34:52those who are doomed to die. Many of those captives would be
- 34:55executed. I think one time I, I counted
- 34:58they executed over 86 people. Nebuchadnezzar executed over 86
- 35:02people on the senses of death there.
- 35:04So there are some prisoners apparently under the sentence of
- 35:07death. And then he says #8 for God's
- 35:10name, OK, it will be declared in Zion, the name of the Lord, and
- 35:15in Jerusalem, his praise. This is the third time or Psalm
- 35:18has mentioned Zion, and this time it mentions it with
- 35:21Jerusalem. Yahweh is God's name mentioned
- 35:25three times. I'm sorry, mentioned seven times
- 35:28in verses 12 to 22. And you know, it's the most
- 35:30common name for God in the Bible mentioned over 6000, some
- 35:35commentators say 6500, others say 6800.
- 35:39But it's God's covenant name, right?
- 35:41And it says it will be declared by all, it says when peoples
- 35:44gather together and kingdoms to worship the Lord.
- 35:48You know we saw in Psalms 87 last week, right, that natural
- 35:52born again citizens from all Four Nations, including Israel's
- 35:58enemies will gather in Zion and worship the Lord some great day.
- 36:03So I asked a question earlier, did God answer this psalmist
- 36:06prayer? Turn with me to Psalm 147.
- 36:09Turn with me to Psalm 147 because that is the answer to
- 36:13prayer in Psalm 147 was written when the temple was being
- 36:23restored. Psalm 147 says praise the Lord,
- 36:28for it is good to sing praises to our God, for it is pleasant
- 36:32and a song of praise is fitting. The Lord builds up Jerusalem.
- 36:36He gathers the outcast of Israel.
- 36:38He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.
- 36:42He determines the number of stars.
- 36:44He gives to all of them their names.
- 36:46Great is our Lord and abundant in power.
- 36:49His understanding is beyond measure.
- 36:51The Lord lifts up the humble. He cast the wicked to the
- 36:54ground. Sing to the Lord with
- 36:56Thanksgiving. Make a melody to our God on the
- 36:58lyre. He covers the heavens with
- 37:00clouds, He prepares rain for the earth, He makes the grass grow
- 37:05on the hills. He gives the beast their food
- 37:07and the young Ravens that cry. His delight is not in the
- 37:10strength of the horse, His pleasure is not in the legs of
- 37:13man. But the Lord takes pleasure in
- 37:15those who fear Him, in His hope, in His steadfast love.
- 37:19Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem, Praise your God, O Zion, for he
- 37:24strengthen the bars of your gates.
- 37:26He blesses your children within you.
- 37:27He makes peace within your borders.
- 37:29He fills you with the finest of wheat.
- 37:31He sends out his command to the earth.
- 37:33His word runs swiftly. He gives snow like wool, He
- 37:37scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down his crystals of
- 37:41ice like like crumble. Who can stand before his cold?
- 37:46He sends out his word and melts them.
- 37:48He makes his wind blow and the waters flow.
- 37:51He declares his word to Jacob, his statues and rules to Israel.
- 37:55He has not dealt thus with any other nation.
- 37:58They do not know his rules. Praise the Lord, you know you
- 38:02count there in that Psalms 14744 references to God alone, but
- 38:09that's the answer to prayer. God did build up Jerusalem.
- 38:12God did answer the psalmist prayer in God's timing, right.
- 38:16Let's look at at point #3 the psalmist dependency Psalms 23 to
- 38:22Psalms 28. Psalms 23 says he has broken my
- 38:26strength in mid course. He has shortened my days.
- 38:30Oh God, I say, take me not away in the midst of my days.
- 38:34You whose years endure through all generations of old.
- 38:38You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the
- 38:41work of your hands. They will perish, but you will
- 38:43remain. They will all wear out like a
- 38:45garment. You will change them like a
- 38:47robe, and they will pass away. But you are the same, and your
- 38:52years have no end. The children of your servants
- 38:55shall dwell secure. Their offspring shall be
- 38:58established before you. You know the name of God is only
- 39:02mentioned once in this last paragraph and it's it's the
- 39:05generic name L for God. But the psalmist does use the
- 39:09words you 6 times and he two times in this brief section
- 39:13here. But the psalmist is going to
- 39:15list why he's dependent upon God.
- 39:18Now the first verse is kind of interesting Psalm verse 23
- 39:21because he goes back to verses 1 to 11.
- 39:24He says God crushed me, He broke my strength and he shortened my
- 39:28days. In verse 23, he says he has
- 39:30broken my strength in mid course.
- 39:33So Psalms verse 23, the psalmist returns to remind God of his
- 39:37circumstances in verses 1:00 to 11:00.
- 39:39And then he says he's shortened my days.
- 39:42The psalmist feels like he's about to die and there's an
- 39:45urgency in his prayer, much like, you know, Moses in Numbers
- 39:4911, Moses asked God to kill him. He wanted to die because he was
- 39:54overburdened with the the the responsibility of the children.
- 39:57Israel mentioned Elijah. Elijah wanted to die and after
- 40:02the great victory of the prophets of Baal, Elijah flees
- 40:05from Jezebel and he asked God just kill me, just kill me and
- 40:10Jonah. Jonah, frustrated by God's mercy
- 40:13on the people of Nineveh, asked God to kill him in Jonah 4 three
- 40:17Job repeatedly in the book of Job asked.
- 40:21Desired for death, asking lament, lamenting his suffering
- 40:25and questioning God's action. Jeremiah cursed the day of his
- 40:28birth, indicating a desire. He wished he hadn't been born
- 40:32thus, a desire for death. And even the apostle Paul, that
- 40:35great apostle in Second Corinthians 18, says that
- 40:40brothers, brothers, we experienced affliction.
- 40:43We were so utterly burdened beyond strength that we
- 40:46despaired of life. But God didn't allow any of
- 40:50those men to die, right? Charles Ryrie says all the
- 40:54powers of the world cannot take my life away until God permits.
- 40:59And then he says all the physicians of the earth cannot
- 41:03preserve it when God calls me away.
- 41:06So let's look at First off. Then that was was God crushed
- 41:11him in verse 23. But then in verse 24 to 28, he's
- 41:16going to call upon God and he's going to list 5 things.
- 41:19They're not really in your outline, you have to list them,
- 41:21but number one he's going to say in verse 24, God, you control
- 41:26all things. He says, Oh my God, I say take
- 41:29me not away in the midst of my days.
- 41:31Use whose years endure through all generations.
- 41:34The psalmist was afraid he was going to die soon and you would
- 41:37never see the restoration of the temple in Jerusalem.
- 41:41The psalmist is thinking like King Hezekiah.
- 41:43Remember when Elijah went to King Hezekiah and says you're
- 41:45going to die, get your house in order.
- 41:47Isaiah 3810 King Hezekiah says in the midst of my days, I must
- 41:53depart. I am consigned to the gates of
- 41:55sheehole for the rest of my years.
- 41:57I said I shall not see the Lord the Lord in the land of living.
- 42:01I shall look upon man no more among the inhabitants of the
- 42:04world. So kind of like the same pouting
- 42:07with God there, but the psalmist acknowledges that God controls
- 42:10all in verse 24 and there's 25. He acknowledges that God creates
- 42:15all he says of old. You laid the foundation of the
- 42:19earth. The heavens are the work of your
- 42:21hands. He is the creator God, right?
- 42:24And these verses, Psalm, I'm sorry, Psalms 102 verses 2526
- 42:36and 27 are quoted in Hebrews chapter 1 verses 11:50.
- 42:41And you know, Hebrews one, which is just quote after quote after
- 42:45quote from Psalms, but Hebrews one, the writer of Hebrews is
- 42:49trying to prove that Jesus Christ is superior to angels.
- 42:52So he quotes our Psalm, Psalm, our verses 25 to 27.
- 42:57And he's indicating, hey, that Jesus is greater than angels
- 43:01because the sun created the universe and one day that sun is
- 43:05going to destroy the heavens and the earth he created.
- 43:07But this, this sun remains unchanged.
- 43:10And again he talks about the immutability and divine essence
- 43:14of God. So He's the creator.
- 43:17And then in verse 26, God changes all.
- 43:21He says they will perish, but you remain.
- 43:24They will all wear out like a garment.
- 43:25You will change them like a robe, and they will all pass
- 43:28away. Astronomers tell us that the
- 43:31stars will wear out in 5.5 billion years and that someday
- 43:35our sun is going to run out of hydrogen.
- 43:38So even they will apparently wear out like a garment.
- 43:41But God is everlasting, everlasting, eternal.
- 43:45Now verse 27, God changes not he says, but you are the same and
- 43:50your years have no end. God doesn't change.
- 43:54You know I mentioned MacArthur says immutability is yet another
- 43:58characteristic of the divine essence.
- 44:01Once again, the Old Testament testifies to the Son's deity.
- 44:06Hebrews 13/8 says, you know that verse, Jesus Christ is a saying,
- 44:09yesterday, today, and forever, and then #5 God cares for all.
- 44:15Verse 28 The psalmist ends with hope.
- 44:18OK. The psalmist says, the children
- 44:21of your servants shall dwell, secure, their offspring shall be
- 44:25established before you. The psalmist knows that the
- 44:28future is dependent upon God and His promises.
- 44:31The psalmist might not see the return of Jews.
- 44:34He might not see the temple being rebuilt and Jerusalem
- 44:38being rebuilt under King Cyrus, but he knows his children will.
- 44:42Because you know God will keep His promise.
- 44:45The Lord did keep His promise. The people were restored to
- 44:48Jerusalem under King Cyrus and eventually God would send Jesus
- 44:52Christ the Messiah to restore mankind to Himself.
- 44:57And only Jesus is the answer to our problems and sufferings.
- 45:00I quoted this once before, but I felt it was appropriate to read
- 45:03it again tonight. There's a Chinese parable which
- 45:06describes how a man fell into a pit and he lay groaning there
- 45:10and helpless. Presently Confucius, that great
- 45:13Chinese philosopher, passed by and seeing the man, said to him,
- 45:18how foolish of you to fall in there.
- 45:21I am truly sorry for you. Let me give you some advice.
- 45:24If you ever get out of this pit, don't fall in again.
- 45:28Later a Buddhist priest passed by and said, Poor fellow
- 45:32creature, if you can but struggle halfway out, I could
- 45:36reach you and lift you out. But the next day the Lord Jesus
- 45:40passed by that way. And hearing the man's groans, he
- 45:43had compassion on him and said, I loved you and gave myself for
- 45:48your salvation. And he stooped right down and
- 45:51lifted that man up saying, see, I've saved you, go and sin no
- 45:55more. What a wonderful savior is he.
- 45:58So I hope like the psalmist, you can keep your eyes on Jesus no
- 46:02matter what they are. Don't be surprised when times of
- 46:05spiritual loneliness and despair come.
- 46:08They will come. God is not obliged or obligated
- 46:12to answer our cries for help immediately.
- 46:15You've heard it 100 times in this church, Ambassador Lance,
- 46:18that God never gave Job the answer, right?
- 46:21Job did not know what was going on behind the scenes.
- 46:24But don't confuse the silence of God with a lack of love, a lack
- 46:29of love or compassion. But try to direct your vision to
- 46:33the eternal picture than the immediately difficult
- 46:36circumstances. So remember tonight, verses 1 to
- 46:3911, we're all about suffering. But verse 12, he says, but you,
- 46:44the psalmist got his eyes focused on his immutability, his
- 46:48eternality, his pity, his compassion, his faithfulness.
- 46:52And I was thinking tonight in closing, we have a few minutes
- 46:55before you can pick up your kids.
- 46:57But I was thinking about the book of Philippians.
- 46:59And if you want to turn there, the book of Philippians.
- 47:02You know, the apostle Paul is sitting in a Roman jail, yet he
- 47:07says so much about joy and rejoicing.
- 47:12So much. Sometimes it drives me crazy.
- 47:14But I want you to think about this.
- 47:17Prison is not a place to write about joy, is it?
- 47:22It's probably cold. He's chained to a Roman soldier.
- 47:27I'm sure the food wasn't good. You know he's innocent, but
- 47:31prison is not a place to write about joy and peace.
- 47:35Yet look what the apostle Paul does.
- 47:38Philippians 1, three to four. I thank my God in all my
- 47:42remembrance of you always and every prayer of mine for you
- 47:47all, making my prayer with joy. So there's joy in prayer.
- 47:54Even though he's in jail, even though he's going to spend at
- 47:58least two years there on the 1st imprisonment.
- 48:01Then look at Philippians. Where did I go?
- 48:06I missed up here. I'm not sure what verse is in
- 48:10chapter 1, but it says what then?
- 48:13Only that in every way, whether in pretense or truth, Christ is
- 48:18proclaimed. And in that I rejoice.
- 48:21Yes, I will rejoice. OK, so that's, that's in verses,
- 48:26I think 15 and 16 there the last part of there.
- 48:32So here there's joy, even though there's personal conflict going
- 48:35on. Some people are preaching Christ
- 48:37out of envy. Apostle Paul's doing it out of
- 48:39sincerity, but he's he's just happy that the gospel is being
- 48:43preached. So even though there's conflict
- 48:45going on, there's joy. Then chapter 2 verses one to
- 48:49two, he says, so if there's any encouragement in Christ, any
- 48:53comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any
- 48:56affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same
- 49:02mind, having the same love, being in the full accord and of
- 49:05one mind. So there's joy in prayer,
- 49:08there's joy in personal conflicts, and there's joy in
- 49:11unity in the body of Christ. And did we not see that last
- 49:15week at Vacation Bible School? It was just so beautiful.
- 49:18You've got the, the games going on over there.
- 49:21You've got the, the snacks going on over here.
- 49:24You got the Bible story going on over here.
- 49:26You got the, the crafts going on over here.
- 49:29And there's like 60-70 people with those kids and everybody's
- 49:34functioning. It's just a wonderful
- 49:35demonstration of love and unity, all so that the children can
- 49:39learn about Jesus Christ. Philippians 2 verses 7 to 18, he
- 49:44says in Philippians 217 to 18, even if I'm being poured out as
- 49:50a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your
- 49:52faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
- 49:56Likewise, you also should be glad and rejoice with me.
- 50:01So it's possible here. We do believe that Apostle Paul
- 50:05was released, but even if God would allow him to die here,
- 50:09he's going to have joy in death because you know, absent from
- 50:13the body is present with the Lord.
- 50:15So he's not feeling he's not having a pity party here.
- 50:18Even in second Timothy chapter 4, which we Paul's last words,
- 50:21he doesn't have a pity party. There's joy in pending death
- 50:25because he knows that he'll be with Christ in heaven forever.
- 50:29And then if you go to the last verses in in Philippians 2
- 50:32verses 28 to 29, not quite the last.
- 50:36He says I am more eager to send him.
- 50:39OK. He's talking about a path a
- 50:41path, right a path roditis. I'm sorry wrong guy.
- 50:45I'm more eager to send him there for that you may rejoice at
- 50:47seeing him again and that I may be less anxious.
- 50:50So receive him in the Lord with all joy and honor such men.
- 50:54So one of the main reasons Paul wrote Philippians was to ease
- 50:58their concern for a path roditis health even sick almost died.
- 51:02They're they're they're grieving.
- 51:03They're worried, but they love this brother.
- 51:06So there's joy in the leadership and Paul's going to send
- 51:10Epaphroditus back to them and there's just going to be great
- 51:13joy. And there's the Philippians had
- 51:16love and joy for the leadership in Epaphroditus.
- 51:19And then look at Philippians 31. Finally, my brothers, rejoice in
- 51:23the Lord. To write the same thing to you
- 51:26is no more trouble to me and it's safe for you.
- 51:29So this is the first time he says joy in the Lord.
- 51:32In Philippians he said a lot about joy, a lot about
- 51:35rejoicing. But here he says we have to have
- 51:37joy in the Lord. And there is no joy without the
- 51:40Lord, is there? There's no hope without the
- 51:42Lord, right? And then if you go to
- 51:44Philippians 4/1, he says, therefore, my brothers whom I
- 51:47love and long for my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord,
- 51:51my beloved. So Paul is saying, there's joy
- 51:54in seeing the fruit of the believers.
- 51:56There's joy in seeing the choir grow here.
- 51:59There's joy in seeing 19 people going to Argentina, 11 of them
- 52:02who've never been on a mission trip.
- 52:04There's joy the last few weeks we've had with, you know, 300
- 52:08people in the auditorium singing.
- 52:09There's been great joy in when you have see the fruit in the
- 52:12lives of the believers. And then you just go to verse
- 52:14four. He once again says in
- 52:16Philippians 4/4, rejoice in the Lord always.
- 52:19Again I say rejoice. So there's only joy in the Lord,
- 52:22nowhere else. And then you go to verse 10 for
- 52:26Philippians 410I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at length
- 52:29you have revived your concern for me.
- 52:31You're indeed concerned for me, but had no opportunity.
- 52:34There's joy in giving. You may not think so, but there
- 52:38is. There's joy in giving.
- 52:40And you know, you know what Jesus said, it's better to give
- 52:43than to receive. So there's great joy when you
- 52:45give. So we don't know exactly the
- 52:48total time Paul spent in jail, but I was reading today that
- 52:52possibly, you know, two years here, he was released, then he
- 52:56spent two years in the prison in Caesarea.
- 52:58And then before he was executed, could have been a year, a year
- 53:01and a half. So Paul might have spent six
- 53:03years in prison. Bad food, bad sleep, cold, hot.
- 53:08Yet he can constantly says rejoice, rejoice in the Lord
- 53:12because he's not looking at his circumstances.
- 53:15His eyes are fixed on his Savior Jesus Christ and God the Father.
- 53:20In fact, he actually says in Philippians that is imprisonment
- 53:24advanced the gospel just incredible.
- 53:27So I hope tonight that Psalm one O 2.
- 53:30If you're being afflicted with any trial, any suffering, maybe
- 53:34family, maybe financial, I don't know, you'll you'll see that the
- 53:37psalmist got his eyes off of his circumstances and got his eyes
- 53:41on God. That's what we need to do, and
- 53:44we need to rejoice even in those sufferings.
- 53:46Let's pray. Father, thank you tonight for
- 53:48Psalm 1O2. I know it's a long Psalm, and we
- 53:51have to go quick to cover through it, but I pray that we
- 53:54could leave here tonight, that when the trials come, when the
- 53:57suffering comes, or perhaps there are people here who, like
- 54:00the psalmist, are afflicted, are suffering, are struggling.
- 54:05May we keep our eyes focused on You and may we consider it with
- 54:08all joy. May we not be surprised, but may
- 54:12we, may we long for that day when we'll be in heaven with you
- 54:15forever. We will remember your
- 54:17faithfulness. May we remember your love and
- 54:19your mercy, your immutability and all your attributes.
- 54:23Father, may we keep our eyes focused on you till that day the
- 54:27trial's over, Till that great day you take us home to be with
- 54:29you forever in Jesus name, Amen.
