- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's take a look at this Broncos defense here for
- 0:02Speaker 1: a moment. In fact, let's ask Jeff Legwald about it
- 0:06Speaker 1: right now here on the Crankman and Lindahl Show as
- 0:07Speaker 1: we are joined by Jeff Legwald of ESPN here on
- 0:11Speaker 1: a Bud Light Football Friday. And Leggy, let's talk about
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Denver defense first. Last year, Trevor Lawrence had a
- 0:19Speaker 1: very good day. Parker Washington had a very good day
- 0:22Speaker 1: against Denver. Defense didn't look great in week one either.
- 0:27Speaker 1: What do you expect to see in terms of adjustments
- 0:29Speaker 1: from Vance Joseph for this game?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Well, I think, you know, Nate, I think you have
- 0:36Speaker 2: to look at it sort of as they, from their lens,
- 0:40Speaker 2: and their lens is, okay, the assignments were okay, but,
- 0:47Speaker 2: you know, how they carried them. I've said this after
- 0:52Speaker 2: the game and this week that, Schematically, not the issue.
- 0:56Speaker 2: It was just getting it done. You know, tackling is
- 0:59Speaker 2: not a strategic problem. You know, tackling is a football problem.
- 1:06Speaker 2: And I think, you know, the Broncos are going to
- 1:11Speaker 2: feel like that they'll have a good plan for Lawrence
- 1:16Speaker 2: and the Jags, but they have to just get much
- 1:20Speaker 2: better at the basic things, you know, And it sounds
- 1:26Speaker 2: almost too simple, but it's true. Get off blocks, and
- 1:31Speaker 2: when you're in position, get the ball carrier on the ground.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So that's a different mindset than, hey, we've got to
- 1:38Speaker 2: come up with this really creative plan to handle this offense.
- 1:43Speaker 2: They feel like they have that, and they felt like
- 1:45Speaker 2: they had it against the Chiefs. It's more a matter of, okay,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you have to actually accomplish the the task at hand.
- 1:55Speaker 2: The plan can be great, but if you don't tackle
- 1:58Speaker 2: people and get off blocks and stay in the correct gap,
- 2:03Speaker 2: it won't matter what the plan is.
- 2:08Speaker 3: What do you think... Boy, Jeff, I don't even know
- 2:11Speaker 3: how to really phrase the question. What do you expect
- 2:13Speaker 3: out of Bo to start this game? Nate and I
- 2:14Speaker 3: were just talking about it. Nate went back, looked at
- 2:17Speaker 3: some numbers, looked at some video, not throwing a waddle
- 2:20Speaker 3: as much. I know it was a heavy... course of
- 2:22Speaker 3: the questioning today and Sean promising they're going to get
- 2:25Speaker 3: Waddle the ball. Do you think we're going to see
- 2:27Speaker 3: a force feed of the screen game or what do
- 2:29Speaker 3: you think they're going to try to do to unlock
- 2:31Speaker 3: the guy they gave up a first round pick for?
- 2:34Speaker 2: Well, he's open on plenty of plays. I've been through
- 2:39Speaker 2: the chart of the game twice and have been through
- 2:44Speaker 2: it plenty and even watching it live. He's open including
- 2:49Speaker 2: the first play of the game. That's a fact that
- 2:52Speaker 2: If Bo simply gets the ball out of his hand,
- 2:56Speaker 2: when Waddle flashes across the formation, it's a huge gain,
- 3:01Speaker 2: and you may not even be having the narrative they had,
- 3:06Speaker 2: you know, right now. So he is open. It's, you know,
- 3:11Speaker 2: quarterback's got to put the ball in there, and Waddle's
- 3:15Speaker 2: just got to continue to do what he does. And,
- 3:18Speaker 2: you know, he's getting good releases. Now, he got bracketed
- 3:23Speaker 2: a lot, so that is going to make Bo shy
- 3:27Speaker 2: away in some initial progressions. But there were plays that
- 3:31Speaker 2: were there when he was open. And when you get
- 3:34Speaker 2: the chances and the opportunity when he isn't bracketed, that's
- 3:39Speaker 2: when you've got to find a way to get him
- 3:42Speaker 2: the ball. Because you can... You can force that to
- 3:46Speaker 2: not happen from time to time. You can scheme it
- 3:50Speaker 2: up so he doesn't get doubled. You can put him
- 3:53Speaker 2: in a bunch. You can move him. And they did
- 3:55Speaker 2: those things. And when he's in those situations, they've got
- 3:59Speaker 2: to get him the ball. I don't think they can
- 4:00Speaker 2: go into it thinking, okay, got to have 12 targets
- 4:05Speaker 2: today or it's not a success. I think it's more
- 4:08Speaker 2: a matter of every time you have done the right
- 4:12Speaker 2: thing and gotten him free, that's when you've got to
- 4:16Speaker 2: try to get him the ball in those situations.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jeff, there was a really high pressure rate on Bo
- 4:21Speaker 1: Nix in that game. As you went and charted and
- 4:25Speaker 1: looked it back, and I'll just tell you, as I
- 4:27Speaker 1: rewatched the game, my conclusion was it was a bad
- 4:32Speaker 1: footwork and a bad pocket presence game out of Bo Nix,
- 4:37Speaker 1: which really he took himself out of the ability to
- 4:40Speaker 1: be able to make the plays when they were there
- 4:42Speaker 1: further down the field. What was your conclusion as to
- 4:47Speaker 1: kind of where the poor place stemmed from?
- 4:50Speaker 2: I think, you know, A, you know, I think in
- 4:54Speaker 2: all of our jobs in the world, there are moments
- 4:58Speaker 2: when you can be pushing too hard to succeed.
- 5:03Speaker 1: The caged mountain lion thing?
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I think sometimes he gets really, really intense sometimes.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And that's one of his great qualities when you're in
- 5:18Speaker 2: the two-minute drill or something or when it's tight or
- 5:20Speaker 2: when bad things are happening. But I think over the
- 5:25Speaker 2: course of his career, if he has a mistake early
- 5:29Speaker 2: in the game, it sometimes takes him a minute to
- 5:33Speaker 2: recover and sort of recalibrate himself. And that is a
- 5:39Speaker 2: hard thing for a player. I'm not saying it's easy,
- 5:42Speaker 2: but I've seen it over and over, especially an interception.
- 5:50Speaker 2: If he has an interception early in the game, I
- 5:52Speaker 2: think if you go back and look at his QBR
- 5:56Speaker 2: and all of it in the four or five possessions
- 6:01Speaker 2: after a pick, I think you're going to find that
- 6:05Speaker 2: it's a tough bounce back. And now you got fooled
- 6:08Speaker 2: a little bit Monday because they come right back.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Touchdown drive, yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And he's five for five on the touchdown drive. But
- 6:14Speaker 2: I think some of the damage quote unquote was, was
- 6:18Speaker 2: done a little bit. Cause he, he never really got
- 6:21Speaker 2: himself back in that rhythm and they didn't do him
- 6:25Speaker 2: any favors, you know, give them some play action, uh,
- 6:29Speaker 2: give them a few, uh, just run rundowns where he,
- 6:34Speaker 2: he hands the ball off and completes the, you know,
- 6:37Speaker 2: fake and watches the running back do his thing. Uh,
- 6:41Speaker 2: You know, if your quarterback's having an unsettled night, I
- 6:44Speaker 2: don't think keep dropping him back is the strategy you
- 6:48Speaker 2: want to take. Because what happens there? They become the
- 6:52Speaker 2: three-and-out offense when they're at their worst. And, you know,
- 6:59Speaker 2: it all seems to fit together when they refuse to
- 7:03Speaker 2: put the run game back in the equation. I would
- 7:05Speaker 2: contend even... even a three and out or a one
- 7:10Speaker 2: first down drive where you've run the ball four or
- 7:13Speaker 2: five times is more helpful to settle your guy down
- 7:17Speaker 2: than having him drop back and have to punt and
- 7:21Speaker 2: do those things. And you guys know, I mean, you've
- 7:24Speaker 2: heard me say it. I'm fascinated how NFL teams can
- 7:28Speaker 2: live with 10 incompletions in a row and no one
- 7:32Speaker 2: bats an eye. But if you have one run for
- 7:34Speaker 2: two yards, the back doesn't see the ball again for
- 7:36Speaker 2: 20 minutes.
- 7:38Speaker 3: All right, talk about this Jacksonville team. What do they
- 7:40Speaker 3: have to worry about with Jacksonville? What's the challenge that
- 7:43Speaker 3: they're bringing in here? And how much of Travis Hunter
- 7:45Speaker 3: offensively do you think we'll see?
- 7:48Speaker 2: Well, they haven't used him much yet. I mean, it's still,
- 7:51Speaker 2: you know, I think they're going to be very judicious.
- 7:55Speaker 2: You know, and the trick to that is when you
- 7:57Speaker 2: put a guy in, then, you know, everybody knows something's up. So,
- 8:02Speaker 2: you know, it's harder, almost more difficult to use him
- 8:06Speaker 2: in a spot duty on offense and get them free. But,
- 8:10Speaker 2: you know, the athleticism is undeniable there. So I think
- 8:15Speaker 2: they'll be, you know, I think they're going to perceive
- 8:18Speaker 2: it as, you know, some coaches call it specials. You know,
- 8:22Speaker 2: those plays are specials. They're going to be on the
- 8:24Speaker 2: lookout for those if he appears on offense. And, you know, overall,
- 8:30Speaker 2: it's a well put together team. You know, what have
- 8:34Speaker 2: they won? eight, nine games in a row, regular season
- 8:39Speaker 2: games in a row. I think they're averaging 31 points
- 8:44Speaker 2: a game over that stretch. That's big time football. You know,
- 8:49Speaker 2: that's getting it done on offense.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt, and Trevor Lawrence absolutely has it going.
- 8:55Speaker 1: He's Jeff Legwald, everybody. Read his stuff. ESPN.com, that's where
- 8:59Speaker 1: you get Leggy's reporting on what's going on with the Broncos. Plus,
- 9:02Speaker 1: Leggy's doing a lot of video work. I've been digging it.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Good stuff in there, Jeff. We appreciate it, man. Thank you.
- 9:09Speaker 2: No one wants to see that, really, but that's okay.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Jeff, you're very good on camera. You have a likable face,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and you present with an air of authority. When I
- 9:20Speaker 1: watch Jeff Legwald, I'm like, I'm learning football. I trust
- 9:23Speaker 1: that guy.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Jeff, you present with an air of authority, but you
- 9:26Speaker 3: have a punchable face.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yes, that's been said many times.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I mean, that's the thing you can't do anything about.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I've taken more than my share on the west side
- 9:40Speaker 2: of Chicago.
- 9:41Speaker 1: No, hey, listen.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Yeah, and other things. You've got hobbies as well that
- 9:45Speaker 3: seem to call that up, but okay.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Jeff, man, we appreciate it as always. Thank you.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Oh, thank you. Thank you very much. See you guys.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Happy Friday.
- 9:56Speaker 1: All right. Jeff Legwald with us on a Bud Light
- 9:59Speaker 1: football Friday. Come see us here at Skippy's.
