- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:20Speaker 3: And they are underway in Seattle.
- 0:22Speaker 4: Don't worry about it, We've got you covered here on
- 0:24Speaker 4: Fox Sports Radio. Of all the auction erin Torres that
- 0:28Speaker 4: happens is the US and Australia. Yeah, so just seconds
- 0:32Speaker 4: underway in the Pacific Northwest. Great time to be in,
- 0:37Speaker 4: Great time to be back.
- 0:38Speaker 5: We appreciate ste guys giving us this platform and like
- 0:42Speaker 5: I said, just a heck of a time to be
- 0:43Speaker 5: in this chair. I heard Colin say this coming in,
- 0:48Speaker 5: this might be literally the most important US World Cup
- 0:53Speaker 5: game in three to four World Cups because obviously, if
- 0:55Speaker 5: we win this, we essentially advanced to the round of sixteen.
- 0:59Speaker 5: I know there's math involve that we don't have to
- 1:00Speaker 5: get into right now, but man oh man, fun times.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Well, and here's the thing, and we'll get to this later.
- 1:06Speaker 4: It'll be the round of thirty two. Because of the
- 1:08Speaker 4: expanded field, this year.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Don't worry.
- 1:10Speaker 4: It's all a part of the conversation that we'll have
- 1:12Speaker 4: over the next two hours. But the US in Australia
- 1:16Speaker 4: just underway. You know how we've got the audience covered.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Aaron Torris, I should have said knockout round, but yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 3: that's just flushed your luck.
- 1:24Speaker 4: That's all right, it happens. By the way, it feels
- 1:27Speaker 4: like every team that made the World couple make it
- 1:29Speaker 4: to the knockout stage. It's kind of it's this weird feeling.
- 1:32Speaker 4: I'm not sure that expansion was necessarily great for the
- 1:34Speaker 4: World Cup.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I can understand the.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Reasonings and why they expanded to forty eight teams. However,
- 1:40Speaker 4: when it comes down to the play, and they've also
- 1:41Speaker 4: changed some of the tie breakers as well, could make
- 1:44Speaker 4: some of these group stage matches meaningless. But we'll get
- 1:47Speaker 4: to that later in the show. If at any point
- 1:50Speaker 4: Aeron Torres during the next two hours, the United States
- 1:53Speaker 4: scores a goal and we are on the air and
- 1:57Speaker 4: like we're not in a break, We're not in a timeout.
- 2:00Speaker 4: You're gonna hear one of the most patriotic, one of
- 2:04Speaker 4: the most spine tingling songs, a song that just oozes
- 2:09Speaker 4: red White and blue. It will immediately start playing here
- 2:13Speaker 4: on Fox Sports Radio. You ready to hear what song
- 2:15Speaker 4: that is? Iowa Sam? So if you hear Haul Cogan's
- 2:22Speaker 4: theme music, that means the United States is on the board.
- 2:28Speaker 4: So that's when we rely on Chris Purfett, who's going
- 2:31Speaker 4: to be watching one of our soccer experts, Jason Stewart, Sam.
- 2:35Speaker 4: They could give us all the details of what would
- 2:38Speaker 4: have just happened in that match we should have should
- 2:42Speaker 4: we have one for Australia too?
- 2:43Speaker 3: Should we play like I don't know, men at work?
- 2:46Speaker 3: Men at work? Yeah? Right, I figured that's the that's
- 2:50Speaker 3: the right one.
- 2:51Speaker 4: In excess, if you if you hear I think men
- 2:54Speaker 4: at work works, if you hear men at work aeron Torres.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Okay, and you'll know there you go.
- 3:02Speaker 4: This, by the way, will not be a lot on
- 3:04Speaker 4: the podcast, but if you hear this, you'll know that
- 3:07Speaker 4: the United States is down or just allowed a goal
- 3:11Speaker 4: to Australia. All right, that's how we will tell you.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Those are our warning signs today here on Stuve gottson
- 3:16Speaker 4: Company Live on Fox Sports Radio.
- 3:18Speaker 5: It is so great to be on right, as you know,
- 3:21Speaker 5: it's not often that you could be on in a
- 3:25Speaker 5: moment that you know that everyone that is listening to
- 3:30Speaker 5: us is you know, like wants the minute by minute updates.
- 3:32Speaker 5: Now everybody can be in front of a TV. It's
- 3:34Speaker 5: just a very cool moment, especially middle of the day, summertime.
- 3:37Speaker 5: Very cool to be on it.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Ihearts the home to the World Cup as well, so
- 3:41Speaker 4: I know that you can catch the matches there. But
- 3:43Speaker 4: if you're listening to us, we appreciate it, and it's
- 3:46Speaker 4: just it's awesome because we're gonna be riding along with
- 3:49Speaker 4: you with this match and it is important and there
- 3:53Speaker 4: will be a lot of eyeballs on this match here.
- 3:56Speaker 4: But I think like as the stakes get bigger, if
- 3:58Speaker 4: it is to the round of thirty two and the
- 4:00Speaker 4: round of sixteen, There's been a recent trend Aaron Torres
- 4:03Speaker 4: where the biggest events in sports have just drawn crazy
- 4:11Speaker 4: numbers over the last year or so, and so like
- 4:14Speaker 4: when we're entering this World Cup, I know you kind
- 4:16Speaker 4: of wanted to make not an apology in any way,
- 4:19Speaker 4: not maybe a mia culpa, but some of this excitement
- 4:22Speaker 4: I know caught you off guard a little bit. But
- 4:25Speaker 4: I think we're going to see because we're in this
- 4:27Speaker 4: time where the Knicks are coming off of a championship,
- 4:29Speaker 4: and we've had the best ratings of an NBA finals
- 4:32Speaker 4: since nineteen ninety eight. We've had other great events. We're
- 4:36Speaker 4: on the heels of a US Golden Hockey and the
- 4:38Speaker 4: Winter Olympics that had crazy numbers. But I think that
- 4:42Speaker 4: when you see the US and if they're able to
- 4:44Speaker 4: advance with this being here domestically in our country, I
- 4:48Speaker 4: think we're going to see crazy numbers for these matches,
- 4:51Speaker 4: and a crazy number for this match today.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Yeah, you mentioned Ama culpa. You mentioned an apology sometimes,
- 4:59Speaker 5: you know, you were very nice about how you frame that.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Sometimes you just need to give America an apology. And
- 5:04Speaker 5: I think one thing not enough people do in this
- 5:06Speaker 5: business is just admit when they're flat out wrong. And
- 5:09Speaker 5: I said on my weekend show a few saturdays ago,
- 5:12Speaker 5: you know, I said, is are we feeling.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Buzz for the World Cup?
- 5:16Speaker 5: Is this thing gonna land the way that a World
- 5:18Speaker 5: Cup normally lands. I just didn't feel like there was
- 5:21Speaker 5: as much excitement as I was anticipating a week ten
- 5:24Speaker 5: days out. Well, we are now what eight nine, ten
- 5:28Speaker 5: days in, and it has exceeded every logical expectation we
- 5:31Speaker 5: see all the stuff on social media, the visitors enjoying it,
- 5:35Speaker 5: but as also somebody who was you know, on vacation
- 5:38Speaker 5: for you know, earlier this week. The number of people
- 5:41Speaker 5: that you would just meet at the pool, at the
- 5:43Speaker 5: at the bar wherever, saying you know, either one, you know,
- 5:47Speaker 5: everybody's circling around the TVs to watch the games, what's
- 5:49Speaker 5: going on? But two also just the number of people
- 5:52Speaker 5: that I met who you know, I'm from Houston, I'm
- 5:55Speaker 5: going to the game on Sunday.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I'm from Seattle. I got to get back early for
- 5:58Speaker 3: this game.
- 5:59Speaker 5: It was really cool to see, uh, the excitement about
- 6:03Speaker 5: this event, which again has totally exceeded my expectations as
- 6:08Speaker 5: far as how involved people are. I think there's some
- 6:10Speaker 5: other stuff I can get to in a minute, but
- 6:12Speaker 5: want to give you back there the opener.
- 6:14Speaker 4: The opener that the US had against Paraguay had twenty
- 6:17Speaker 4: five million viewers across the English and Spanish speaking broadcast.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Last night, my son wrapped up sports camp. He's five
- 6:29Speaker 4: years old. They didn't have sports camp today, so yesterday
- 6:32Speaker 4: was the last day. He loves Buffalo wild Wings and
- 6:38Speaker 4: I said to my wife, we should take him. We
- 6:39Speaker 4: should take him for a treat for finishing sports camp
- 6:42Speaker 4: this week. Then dawned on me that we're on the
- 6:45Speaker 4: We're in the West coast and at six o'clock local
- 6:48Speaker 4: time it was niney some at six o'clock local time,
- 6:50Speaker 4: Mexico and South Korea.
- 6:52Speaker 3: We're going to play their match.
- 6:53Speaker 4: And I said to my wife, I said, I hope
- 6:56Speaker 4: you didn't say anything to him, because it's probably going
- 6:57Speaker 4: to be super busy. She goes, I did say something
- 6:59Speaker 4: to you said all right, well, let's go now. So
- 7:02Speaker 4: we showed up at five o'clock, showed up an hour
- 7:04Speaker 4: before the match. And I'm not kidding Aaron Torres that
- 7:08Speaker 4: there there was nobody. When you check in, you walk in,
- 7:11Speaker 4: you put your name in, they say, you know, five
- 7:13Speaker 4: ten minutes to get your table ready. There was a
- 7:16Speaker 4: line of people that came in over the next ten
- 7:19Speaker 4: to fifteen minutes, whether filling into the bar. There was
- 7:21Speaker 4: a party of ten, there was a party of fifteen.
- 7:25Speaker 4: The entire the entire restaurant last night was filled with
- 7:29Speaker 4: Mexico fans.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Every TV.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I kid you that every TV except one which still
- 7:35Speaker 4: had the golf channel on it, every TV had the
- 7:38Speaker 4: Mexico in the entire Buffalo Wild Wings. It was standing
- 7:41Speaker 4: room only.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Wow.
- 7:43Speaker 4: When they started to play the Mexican national anthem, my
- 7:46Speaker 4: wife started to cry, Okay, like in this like we're
- 7:49Speaker 4: getting emotional in this Buffalo Wild Wings And again, this
- 7:52Speaker 4: isn't our team, this is our So there is something
- 7:56Speaker 4: organic about it and bringing everybody together and you know,
- 7:59Speaker 4: people and listen. I don't know how much people get
- 8:03Speaker 4: together anymore to watch Super Bowls at places like that
- 8:08Speaker 4: or the NBA Finals, But I went to a Lakers
- 8:11Speaker 4: playoff game at the same establishment about two or three
- 8:15Speaker 4: months ago and nobody was there in this town in
- 8:18Speaker 4: Los Angeles. But everybody was there last night for Mexico.
- 8:21Speaker 4: So I don't think that. I think it's everything around it.
- 8:25Speaker 4: So it's even bigger than I would have guessed. Aaron
- 8:27Speaker 4: I would have said, I think it's going to be
- 8:28Speaker 4: pretty big for the United States, but I'm not sure
- 8:30Speaker 4: on how it's going to carry about well Mexican. You know,
- 8:33Speaker 4: Mexico fans were going crazy last night. There was standing
- 8:36Speaker 4: room only. We left near the end of the first
- 8:37Speaker 4: half and there were people still waiting to just get
- 8:40Speaker 4: a table to eat last night. So it is just
- 8:42Speaker 4: completely off the charge charts, whether it's the US or
- 8:45Speaker 4: Mexico or whoever in watching this World Cup.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Well, and I think too the other place that you
- 8:50Speaker 5: can see it is just in ticket prices. And I
- 8:52Speaker 5: was thinking about this. So my father in law is
- 8:55Speaker 5: a big soccer fan. He spent a great majority of
- 8:59Speaker 5: our vacation, not by the pool, not by the beach,
- 9:02Speaker 5: in the room by himself watching soccer. And you know,
- 9:05Speaker 5: it's his vacation, He's allowed to do what he wanted.
- 9:07Speaker 5: But we were really hoping to kind of try to
- 9:09Speaker 5: get him to one of these games here at Sofi
- 9:11Speaker 5: Stadium during the World Cup, and unfortunately there was a
- 9:14Speaker 5: few that were obviously happened while we were away and
- 9:17Speaker 5: weren't possible. But this coming Sunday is Father's Day, and
- 9:21Speaker 5: I had kind of eyed the game on Sunday at
- 9:24Speaker 5: Sofi Stadium, Belgium versus Iran, and I could tell you
- 9:29Speaker 5: the third I guess. The World Cup technically kicked off Thursday.
- 9:32Speaker 5: It was the Mexico I can't remember who they played,
- 9:34Speaker 5: but Mexico played South Korea played the late game, and
- 9:38Speaker 5: tickets on that day for the Belgium Iran game on
- 9:42Speaker 5: June twenty first, which is obviously two days from now,
- 9:44Speaker 5: We're about three hundred and fifty dollars, and I almost
- 9:47Speaker 5: pulled the trigger and said, you know what, I'm gonna
- 9:49Speaker 5: hold off, wait another day. They are currently sitting at
- 9:53Speaker 5: nine hundred ten dollars as a get in price, so
- 9:56Speaker 5: they've essentially tripled in a week. And I only bring
- 9:59Speaker 5: it up because one thing that I'm seeing and I
- 10:01Speaker 5: think what you said, we've become an event culture, and
- 10:06Speaker 5: I do think there is something too, There is something
- 10:11Speaker 5: to the big events, the impact that they're having. Go ahead,
- 10:18Speaker 5: oh oh, oh oh. We were going to go over
- 10:20Speaker 5: to Chris Burfet at the news desk. We've got a goal, Chris,
- 10:24Speaker 5: what what just transpired in Seattle? Do we have Do
- 10:28Speaker 5: we have an update?
- 10:30Speaker 4: There is one in the back of the net as
- 10:31Speaker 4: the United States is celebrating.
- 10:33Speaker 6: Yeah, there's one in the back of the net right now.
- 10:34Speaker 6: I'm trying to see who got it in real quick.
- 10:38Speaker 6: It is going to be counted as an own goal
- 10:40Speaker 6: on Australia off Cameron Burgess. I'm trying to see who
- 10:43Speaker 6: the last American was to touch it, because officially.
- 10:47Speaker 3: In Australia, yeah, that's going to be on Australia.
- 10:49Speaker 4: That's on you man. Sorry, should we play network backwards?
- 10:52Speaker 4: If it's an old goal? Is that the Is that
- 10:54Speaker 4: how it works?
- 10:57Speaker 3: Oh? Oh, it is an old goal in an own goal.
- 11:02Speaker 4: All right, here's the you know, Chris, before you make
- 11:06Speaker 4: your point, I mentioned my wife crying.
- 11:10Speaker 6: This is I will say real quick it was Peppy
- 11:13Speaker 6: closest to it, so he might get some credit. And hey,
- 11:16Speaker 6: the man who came in for the injured Pulisic in
- 11:18Speaker 6: the starting eleven.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Ricardo Peppy got the start for Polisic who's out
- 11:21Speaker 4: today with that calf injury. My wife has cousins in
- 11:24Speaker 4: Australia and so we're like, oh, us Australia. By the way,
- 11:27Speaker 4: this is just as inconvenient for Australia watching this match
- 11:30Speaker 4: as it is for most of us here in the States.
- 11:32Speaker 4: If they would have put it at eight o'clock at
- 11:33Speaker 4: night Eastern time, sure, it's it's five am right now
- 11:37Speaker 4: in Sydney, you know, at five twelve am it's noon
- 11:40Speaker 4: for us here on the West coast, three on the
- 11:42Speaker 4: East coast. Like if this was just five hours later,
- 11:44Speaker 4: it would have been in the prime window for everyone.
- 11:46Speaker 4: But they put this smack dab to start off the
- 11:49Speaker 4: day just a little bit weird?
- 11:50Speaker 3: Can I ask a question?
- 11:51Speaker 5: Yes, we'll get back to my ticket price rant in
- 11:55Speaker 5: a second, but one nothing usay. I did see as
- 11:59Speaker 5: I was getting ready to travel back yesterday a lot
- 12:02Speaker 5: of people with the tangent about how unfair it was
- 12:06Speaker 5: the US that this game was at noon Pacific noon
- 12:09Speaker 5: local time three eastern?
- 12:11Speaker 3: Is that like an American thing?
- 12:13Speaker 7: Like?
- 12:13Speaker 5: Are we being too greedy and too selfish with that one?
- 12:17Speaker 5: I do know that we are the host, and I
- 12:20Speaker 5: think the US might actually pay more to broadcast the
- 12:24Speaker 5: World Cup to FIFA than any other country. I'm not
- 12:27Speaker 5: one hundred percent sure on that I know that had
- 12:28Speaker 5: been true in past World Cups. Is that just American
- 12:31Speaker 5: elitism at worked there? Or do you think there's something.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I don't think that. I don't think. So.
- 12:36Speaker 4: Scotland and Morocco will play after this match, So that's
- 12:40Speaker 4: six o'clock Eastern time. That is, Scotland is five hours
- 12:45Speaker 4: ahead of the East Coast, eight hours ahead, so they're
- 12:47Speaker 4: going to be playing at eleven o'clock at night. So
- 12:51Speaker 4: like it would have been better for Scotland and Morocco
- 12:53Speaker 4: to play now this win and in fact, this match
- 12:55Speaker 4: is in Seattle. How many times do we have an
- 12:57Speaker 4: NFL game where there's West Coast game starting first or
- 13:00Speaker 4: a week never happens, never, never ever happens. But here
- 13:04Speaker 4: they put it on it at this point. So I
- 13:05Speaker 4: don't think it's anything about American greed. I think it's
- 13:07Speaker 4: more just for maybe they thought that this was going
- 13:10Speaker 4: to get the biggest, the biggest rating that they could
- 13:13Speaker 4: for their TV partners, and that's why they put it
- 13:15Speaker 4: in the spot.
- 13:16Speaker 8: Sam back to the own goal topic. Didn't we start
- 13:19Speaker 8: against Paraguay with an own own goal?
- 13:21Speaker 3: Right?
- 13:22Speaker 8: I believe so. Yeah, And I believe the first goal
- 13:25Speaker 8: was an own goal for the US. And then I
- 13:27Speaker 8: heard that, like the the amount of own goals this
- 13:30Speaker 8: World Cup is like far exceeded like last last World
- 13:33Speaker 8: Cup in Qatar.
- 13:34Speaker 4: I don't know, it's kind of a phenomenon with all
- 13:36Speaker 4: these own goals. Yes, the own goal the United States
- 13:38Speaker 4: scored seven minutes in. You are correct, good memory. I
- 13:41Speaker 4: completely a little free boost for the US.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 13:45Speaker 4: I know that Chris Purphfett wanted to jump in on
- 13:47Speaker 4: our soccer talk, but I'll also say this. Jason Stewart,
- 13:50Speaker 4: our executive producer has never been one to shy away
- 13:52Speaker 4: from buying interest into anything. Okay, we have, We've had
- 13:56Speaker 4: conversations about this. I'm in three World Cup survivor pool.
- 14:01Speaker 3: No, you didn't call me. Come on, you know, I'm
- 14:04Speaker 3: mister Survivor pool. Now, I know. I know. It's but
- 14:06Speaker 3: it's it's crazy. How many are you? And Jay? How
- 14:09Speaker 3: many did you get in? I think seven? I'm in
- 14:12Speaker 3: seven in seven.
- 14:14Speaker 4: But I feel like I don't even need to buy in,
- 14:16Speaker 4: like I would be bought in watching it without buying interest,
- 14:20Speaker 4: Like I don't feel like looking back on it, I
- 14:22Speaker 4: didn't need to buy in and compete in a survivor
- 14:25Speaker 4: pool to be interested in.
- 14:27Speaker 7: The World Cup. But the format is this. In our
- 14:29Speaker 7: survivor pool, you pick four teams to advance out of
- 14:32Speaker 7: this opening stage. So it's kind of a it's definitely
- 14:35Speaker 7: a slow roll for me. I think I'll have most
- 14:38Speaker 7: interest in the survivor pool in the next elimination stage.
- 14:42Speaker 7: Right now, it's just kind of a I don't know,
- 14:44Speaker 7: it's just really slow for me. But I will say this,
- 14:47Speaker 7: you know how, I'm typically the prolonged agony guy. You know,
- 14:51Speaker 7: I usually root for for like Canada, not to win
- 14:54Speaker 7: a Stanley Cup. I like to prolong It's a better
- 14:56Speaker 7: story from our perspective, The prolonged to agnity agony of
- 15:01Speaker 7: America just not doing well in the World Cup would
- 15:03Speaker 7: be an interesting narrative. But I can't really talk myself
- 15:06Speaker 7: into that. I am the I am the consummate kind
- 15:10Speaker 7: of I guess negative guy when it comes to those
- 15:12Speaker 7: kinds of takes.
- 15:13Speaker 3: But I'm actually all about USA. So that speaks a
- 15:16Speaker 3: lot to this.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Can I jump in? Because Dan, there was a rant
- 15:20Speaker 5: that I did. I don't remember what year it was.
- 15:22Speaker 5: I don't remember if it was the last World Cup,
- 15:23Speaker 5: if it was some summer event that we were part of,
- 15:26Speaker 5: where I just said, the US will never be good
- 15:30Speaker 5: at soccer and we have to accept this as a country.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Stop blaming the coach every time we lose. Okay, I
- 15:35Speaker 5: remember that rant vividly, and so I bring it up
- 15:38Speaker 5: because I am the ultimate team USA pessimist and I
- 15:42Speaker 5: am one hundred percent with Jay stew on that in
- 15:44Speaker 5: that if the US were first of all, if the
- 15:48Speaker 5: US were to get knocked out in the group stage,
- 15:50Speaker 5: this would be obviously be a disaster. Given the draw
- 15:52Speaker 5: of this that the other thing. But I do think
- 15:55Speaker 5: there is only positive with them advancing, no real negative,
- 16:01Speaker 5: and I don't think it moves the story along for
- 16:03Speaker 5: like the continued Team USA agony, because I don't want
- 16:07Speaker 5: to speak for most fans. I might be in the minority,
- 16:09Speaker 5: but I've always been of the belief, like you know,
- 16:12Speaker 5: I've always been the Team USA fatalist of everyone gets
- 16:15Speaker 5: their hopes up every international tournament. We never live up
- 16:18Speaker 5: to expectations. So I think that that there is no
- 16:21Speaker 5: negative to US advancing, And to your point, Chase too,
- 16:24Speaker 5: I don't think it moves the story along at all
- 16:26Speaker 5: or makes it a more interesting World Cup if it's
- 16:28Speaker 5: a disappointment.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Yeah, like when the US didn't qualify eight years ago
- 16:32Speaker 4: when it was in Russia, like that really stunk, like
- 16:35Speaker 4: that like that was it was just there was. Yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 4: you can follow it along, but I mean, I think
- 16:41Speaker 4: what happened at least here in the States least what
- 16:45Speaker 4: I do when it comes to the Olympics. If the
- 16:46Speaker 4: United States isn't good at anything, I'd go to my
- 16:49Speaker 4: heritage and what I'd say, I'd be like, oh, I'll
- 16:51Speaker 4: root for them, but not with the interest of the
- 16:53Speaker 4: United States in you know, and having it. So I'm German,
- 16:56Speaker 4: I'm Norwegian, So like if the US wasn't in, I'd
- 16:59Speaker 4: be like, oh, it's see how Germany does later, right, right,
- 17:03Speaker 4: But it wouldn't rise to the level of the excitement
- 17:06Speaker 4: and them just not participating eight years ago, just it
- 17:09Speaker 4: really stunk. And the good thing is now, like it's
- 17:13Speaker 4: really going to take an epic fail for them not
- 17:14Speaker 4: to qualify with forty eight teams. But it's I'm with
- 17:18Speaker 4: both of you guys in this of just and I
- 17:20Speaker 4: like to see these things come to an end. And
- 17:22Speaker 4: I like to see the best players to never have
- 17:24Speaker 4: won a major win a major in golf. I like
- 17:26Speaker 4: to have that, especially when it comes to like individual events.
- 17:30Speaker 4: But yeah, I think that's we're we're all on one
- 17:33Speaker 4: side here, and that's why the ratings I think are
- 17:35Speaker 4: going to be interesting as well. Just to give a
- 17:37Speaker 4: couple of numbers and we'll take a time out, but
- 17:40Speaker 4: the US and Canada gold medal game that was earlier
- 17:43Speaker 4: in the morning for US in the Winter Olympics, that
- 17:46Speaker 4: averaged eighteen point six million. We're coming off of an
- 17:49Speaker 4: NBA Finals where more than twenty million people watched the
- 17:52Speaker 4: average of game five was twenty four and a half
- 17:54Speaker 4: million people. The World Series averaged fifteen point seven but
- 17:59Speaker 4: Game seven between the Jays and Dodgers twenty seven point
- 18:03Speaker 4: three million people watched that one. That was more than
- 18:06Speaker 4: That doesn't include the Canadian aud anything. No, if fifty
- 18:09Speaker 4: one million watched that Game seven of the World Series
- 18:14Speaker 4: between the US, Canada and Japan.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Wow.
- 18:16Speaker 4: So so those like those are some of the numbers
- 18:18Speaker 4: that we're talking about. And obviously the NFL numbers are huge,
- 18:21Speaker 4: but I would expect that the NFL. I think the
- 18:23Speaker 4: College Football National Championship had thirty million between Indiana and Miami.
- 18:27Speaker 4: I would expect the US to top that number today.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Just to add on to your point, Kse Dallas Thanksgiving game,
- 18:35Speaker 5: we looked it up the other day.
- 18:36Speaker 3: It was something crazy like forty plus million.
- 18:38Speaker 5: It was like the highest rated regular season game in
- 18:41Speaker 5: like thirty five years or something like that.
- 18:42Speaker 4: So he's Aaron Torres, I'm dan by our Chris Perfetts
- 18:45Speaker 4: at the news desk. I want to we don't have
- 18:47Speaker 4: another goal, but we're gonna get a bit of a
- 18:49Speaker 4: recap from what just happened earlier.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Yeah, so we'll do more than that.
- 18:52Speaker 6: We actually have the call from TV on Fox Flaren
- 18:56Speaker 6: Balligan got the goal. I got the ball and everything
- 18:58Speaker 6: after this is what happened when he had it. They
- 19:00Speaker 6: couldnverge on it very quickly.
- 19:03Speaker 8: All again, it's a step on Hircati Palagan to the piline,
- 19:05Speaker 8: Ballagan into the battleton.
- 19:07Speaker 3: It's the United States once to get on the board.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Only Riccardo Peppy was in. Was it perhaps last off
- 19:14Speaker 3: the defender? Who cares?
- 19:16Speaker 7: It's one LUs.
- 19:19Speaker 6: Well, we do care about it being right. It was
- 19:21Speaker 6: off Cameron Burgess the Australia and yes Ricardo Peppy in
- 19:24Speaker 6: front of the goal. But Balligan the one making it happen.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Did you have a point to make earlier that we
- 19:28Speaker 3: got interrupted by the goal?
- 19:30Speaker 6: I just I share an extremely similar story to Aaron
- 19:33Speaker 6: Torres on ticket prices. I think I was also looking
- 19:36Speaker 6: at one of those Bosnia games, and I think I
- 19:37Speaker 6: was also looking at like Iran New Zealand, which went
- 19:40Speaker 6: up I think in the span of three days from
- 19:43Speaker 6: maybe two hundred dollars to four hundred and fifty.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Wow, Yeah, it's crazy.
- 19:48Speaker 4: I looked as well, and then at some point I'm like,
- 19:50Speaker 4: all right, I'm not gonna look anymore for no reason too,
- 19:52Speaker 4: all right, Chris Purfetts at the news desk keeping us
- 19:55Speaker 4: up to date of all the happenings. We've got the
- 19:56Speaker 4: music again. If the US score, you're gonna hear Hull
- 19:58Speaker 4: Cogan's theme, just like that. If Australia scores, you've got
- 20:03Speaker 4: this and if we have another own goal, we'll just
- 20:05Speaker 4: play them both at the same time. Right, That's the
- 20:08Speaker 4: only way to go. He is erin Torres. I'm Dan Byer.

- 21:01Speaker 4: what is happening at the World Cup. And we are
- 21:03Speaker 4: at the half in Seattle. You heard Chris say at
- 21:05Speaker 4: us up on Australia to nil, and whenever the United
- 21:08Speaker 4: States has scored a goal, which has been twice in
- 21:10Speaker 4: the first half, you heard this song on the program.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Even after a var we were able to cash it in.
- 21:18Speaker 4: So if you hear this again, you know the United
- 21:21Speaker 4: States has added another goal to their total at some
- 21:24Speaker 4: point here within the next sixty minutes. We do want
- 21:27Speaker 4: to give fair play to Australia as well, so if
- 21:30Speaker 4: the Aussie's end up scoring and putting one in the net,
- 21:32Speaker 4: I was sam we got. Of course we do in
- 21:36Speaker 4: excess was an option, but we decided men at work
- 21:39Speaker 4: is the at least I decided men at work was
- 21:41Speaker 4: the best option.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I will tell you you're not a music guy, by
- 21:45Speaker 3: the way, now I'm not.
- 21:46Speaker 5: I will say this though, as you know, my mother
- 21:48Speaker 5: has a time not time share a condo in Vegas.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Australian Beg's very popular show in her age group. I
- 21:56Speaker 5: don't know much about them. I don't know if we
- 21:58Speaker 5: have any Australian Beg's Easy did Access she just like
- 22:02Speaker 5: once a month. Is like, yeah, me and the girls
- 22:05Speaker 5: just went to the Australia. I'm like, you've been eleven times.
- 22:08Speaker 5: I've seen clips, Okay, I'm impressed. I think it's it's
- 22:11Speaker 5: pretty good. I haven't I haven't seen it in person.
- 22:14Speaker 5: I'm a fan of the Beg's Love Barry Gibb, Love
- 22:17Speaker 5: the Brothers GiB Maybe.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Next time I'm in the she can get you tickets.
- 22:22Speaker 5: She knows a guy apparently because of goodness, she's there
- 22:24Speaker 5: a lot. I swear to go Jason Stewart.
- 22:26Speaker 7: I'm guessing I'm like a lot of our listeners. I
- 22:28Speaker 7: thought you were going in a totally different direction. There
- 22:30Speaker 7: about a time Sharre in Vegas, the Men down Under.
- 22:34Speaker 7: I'm sure there is more famous.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Yeah, if she does go to Thunder from down Under.
- 22:38Speaker 5: She has kept that one to herself, thankfully. I'm not
- 22:41Speaker 5: saying she has or has not. I'm just saying I'm
- 22:43Speaker 5: very grateful she has.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I'm glad her son doesn't know, yeah, that's that's fair.
- 22:47Speaker 4: That's what I'm happy with.
- 22:48Speaker 7: Uh.
- 22:49Speaker 4: The spots in Vegas. Maybe a tough day to play golf.
- 22:52Speaker 4: I'm sure it's boiling hot, but still there are people
- 22:55Speaker 4: who will go out there at one o'clock in the afternoon,
- 22:57Speaker 4: maybe discounted rates. Go ahead, have some fun. If you
- 23:00Speaker 4: think playing golf is fun. I absolutely love the sport.
- 23:03Speaker 4: There are some who love it and end up hating
- 23:05Speaker 4: it by the time it's over. Jaqe Neeman, who currently
- 23:09Speaker 4: plays with Livgolf, one of the better players in the world,
- 23:15Speaker 4: A young star coming up throughout the ranks making his
- 23:20Speaker 4: impression on the world of golf. Joaque Neeman had a
- 23:25Speaker 4: tough time yesterday when he shot seventy eight. Jaque Neeman
- 23:29Speaker 4: recorded not an eight, not a nine. He recorded in
- 23:34Speaker 4: eleven on the Power four sixth hole, and that was
- 23:37Speaker 4: because of a two shot penalty that Neeman got for
- 23:40Speaker 4: throwing his club. It is a newer rule when it
- 23:45Speaker 4: comes to professional golf, but there was a rule put
- 23:48Speaker 4: in in twenty nineteen by the USGA, basically a Code
- 23:52Speaker 4: of Conduct rule AARON that said players could be docked
- 23:56Speaker 4: strokes for unbecoming kin on the course. Now this was
- 24:02Speaker 4: not fully adopted until this past year, and the I
- 24:05Speaker 4: guess the irony in all of this. I think there
- 24:07Speaker 4: were a couple of incidents last year at the US
- 24:10Speaker 4: Open at Oakmont that forced this to be put into
- 24:14Speaker 4: play this year. Rory McElroy chucked the club about fifty
- 24:17Speaker 4: yards last year at the US Open after a bad shot,
- 24:22Speaker 4: and Wyndam Clark, who is currently in the lead, also
- 24:25Speaker 4: destroyed a locker at Oakmont Country Club, actually two lockers,
- 24:30Speaker 4: with his frustration in the clubhouse. There was a picture
- 24:32Speaker 4: taking it went viral. It was not a good look
- 24:35Speaker 4: for Wyndam Clark, and now he's leading the US Open
- 24:38Speaker 4: at seven under par. But the fact of the matter
- 24:41Speaker 4: is like the golf course is a place where you
- 24:45Speaker 4: want to get away, and very rarely can you because
- 24:50Speaker 4: it is such a frustrating sport. And I feel safe
- 24:53Speaker 4: in saying that of this crew that we've got here,
- 24:56Speaker 4: I'm the one who loves golf the most, I don't
- 24:59Speaker 4: have I have a desire to throw a club. However,
- 25:03Speaker 4: I am not at the level of one walking Neeman
- 25:06Speaker 4: with so much at stake. He didn't get a great
- 25:09Speaker 4: ruling that he liked, but still you can't act like
- 25:11Speaker 4: a petulant child. And now the hammer is starting to
- 25:14Speaker 4: come down on these players that do.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Yeah, it sure seems like it. And I don't know,
- 25:21Speaker 5: do you play? Do you play golf? So I really
- 25:24Speaker 5: stopped playing because I was so bad, And I've this
- 25:28Speaker 5: part I've told on air. I don't know to you personally,
- 25:31Speaker 5: but fun fact about me. For three years in college,
- 25:35Speaker 5: I worked at a golf course during the summer, and
- 25:39Speaker 5: one there were two reasons I stopped playing. One one
- 25:42Speaker 5: time there was a barter situation where I went out
- 25:47Speaker 5: with the club pro for about twenty minutes and he
- 25:49Speaker 5: fixed my swing and I was hitting it straight for
- 25:51Speaker 5: like four days straight, for like four you know, yeah, yeah,
- 25:54Speaker 5: four day straight, and then by day five it was
- 25:56Speaker 5: just a train wreck again. And I realized, I'm never
- 25:59Speaker 5: gonna be good with good at this without a lot
- 26:02Speaker 5: of time and a lot of money, especially when you're
- 26:05Speaker 5: in college.
- 26:06Speaker 3: More so the money than the time. Situation just didn't
- 26:08Speaker 3: have a lot of it.
- 26:09Speaker 5: But I I literally got worse at golf every single
- 26:12Speaker 5: summer that I worked at a golf course and decided
- 26:15Speaker 5: that maybe this wasn't in the future for me.
- 26:17Speaker 4: This is this is the This is the interesting dynamic
- 26:20Speaker 4: because I think people who are really really bad at
- 26:24Speaker 4: golf shouldn't get mad at being really bad at golf
- 26:28Speaker 4: because they should just go out for the walk and
- 26:30Speaker 4: understand what is what. It's the player and I'm and
- 26:33Speaker 4: I'm Jauki Nieman obviously has goals and aspirations to win
- 26:38Speaker 4: a US Open and plays at the highest level, and
- 26:41Speaker 4: it doesn't go as why Now, granted, he's an adult,
- 26:43Speaker 4: so he shouldn't act like a child. But I do
- 26:45Speaker 4: think that there are there are levels too on whether
- 26:49Speaker 4: you should be able to throw a club or not,
- 26:51Speaker 4: because there's like if you're if you're that bad, you
- 26:57Speaker 4: know kind of what you're dealing with right, Like to
- 26:58Speaker 4: your point, like you took less for four days and
- 27:00Speaker 4: then the swing goes away and it's not there on
- 27:03Speaker 4: day five. On day five or six, I could say,
- 27:06Speaker 4: all right, Torres had it going the last couple of weeks,
- 27:08Speaker 4: it's not happening.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Now.
- 27:10Speaker 4: Now he's mad because he can't figure it out. But
- 27:12Speaker 4: at some point it's a foregone conclusion that you stink
- 27:14Speaker 4: at the sport. Yes, So the worst thing that you
- 27:16Speaker 4: can do is just damage the equipment or just stop
- 27:18Speaker 4: playing if it's going to be that miserable for you,
- 27:20Speaker 4: if you're not good and you don't want to play,
- 27:22Speaker 4: just stop playing the sport. Don't chuck clubs and make
- 27:25Speaker 4: it uncomfortable for everyone else.
- 27:26Speaker 5: Yeah, And I do actually kind of remember during the
- 27:31Speaker 5: stretch immediately after where I was, where I was progressively
- 27:38Speaker 5: getting worse every single time after being half decent for
- 27:41Speaker 5: like two days. I do remember like smashing a club
- 27:45Speaker 5: on the ground, and I think breaking it because it
- 27:47Speaker 5: is it is a very frustrating thing. And I think
- 27:49Speaker 5: I speak for a lot of people. I think I
- 27:51Speaker 5: speak for a lot of former athletes, you know, probably
- 27:53Speaker 5: a lot of people in our business. Like if you
- 27:56Speaker 5: ever played sports at any sort of competitive level, even
- 27:59Speaker 5: high school. I mean I never played beyond high school,
- 28:00Speaker 5: but it's like you play to be good at stuff,
- 28:03Speaker 5: like I am not. And maybe maybe I'm wrong on this,
- 28:07Speaker 5: but I am not the type of person that can
- 28:11Speaker 5: just do much for like much competitive things for fun
- 28:15Speaker 5: without actually being good at it. Now you go to top golf,
- 28:19Speaker 5: that's a little bit different something like that. But like
- 28:21Speaker 5: if I'm going to commit a day to you know,
- 28:26Speaker 5: getting up early, going to the range, renting clubs, borrowing clubs,
- 28:30Speaker 5: like I don't want to go out there and stink.
- 28:32Speaker 3: So I might be in the minority on that, but
- 28:34Speaker 3: I'm just.
- 28:35Speaker 5: Call it the former competitive athlete and me no big
- 28:38Speaker 5: deal high school football, class of three. But I'm just saying, like,
- 28:41Speaker 5: I can't. I can't just be like, oh, I got
- 28:44Speaker 5: three hours of sunlight, like that's a win for me,
- 28:47Speaker 5: you know what I mean.
- 28:47Speaker 4: Jason Stewart has such an interesting perspective on his own game,
- 28:51Speaker 4: and one that I really appreciate, not just as the
- 28:53Speaker 4: executive producer of the show, but someone who does tee
- 28:56Speaker 4: it up on two to three occasions a year.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Jason Stewart, Yeah, I'm awful at golf.
- 29:01Speaker 7: I don't know if I'll ever be good, but I
- 29:04Speaker 7: have golf with people that are good, and it is
- 29:06Speaker 7: always when stuff like this happens on the pro level.
- 29:09Speaker 7: It's interesting to me because I always think that it's
- 29:13Speaker 7: part and parcel. If you're going to elevate to that
- 29:15Speaker 7: level of being a professional, you need to have a
- 29:18Speaker 7: this the threshold of losing it, the threshold of rage
- 29:24Speaker 7: has to be so high. So when these guys do
- 29:26Speaker 7: reach that threshold, it's very interesting to me because, yeah,
- 29:30Speaker 7: if I've been golfing with guys and I see them
- 29:32Speaker 7: they're throwing their clubs or the most common way to
- 29:36Speaker 7: release rage is to use the F word and just start,
- 29:39Speaker 7: you know, stomping around. But like you see that on
- 29:42Speaker 7: the golf course because we're amateurs and this is how
- 29:46Speaker 7: we react when we think we're good at something and
- 29:48Speaker 7: something goes wrong. But when you're a pro, when you
- 29:51Speaker 7: reach that level of rage, that those moments to me
- 29:55Speaker 7: are very interesting.
- 29:56Speaker 3: And again Nieman got a ruling that he didn't like.
- 29:59Speaker 4: He was looking for relief from what he said was
- 30:02Speaker 4: like a patch of fire ants. I'm not telling you
- 30:05Speaker 4: this because I'm trying to justify what he did. There
- 30:08Speaker 4: was just a build up to it. He also the
- 30:10Speaker 4: volunteers there that sit along the edges of the fairway
- 30:13Speaker 4: to find golf balls. They'll take a flag if your
- 30:15Speaker 4: ball is in the rough and mark it down so
- 30:17Speaker 4: you see where it is, so the players know where
- 30:19Speaker 4: it is. And he apparently kicked that and then chucked
- 30:22Speaker 4: his club. Yeah, so there's a lot, so he was.
- 30:24Speaker 4: He was given that two shot penalty. But Jason, you
- 30:27Speaker 4: said that you play golf with people who play golf. Well,
- 30:31Speaker 4: but when you play and you don't play well like
- 30:34Speaker 4: your what is your thought? You explain this before the show.
- 30:38Speaker 7: Well, I mean, I'm always aware of I've learned a
- 30:41Speaker 7: certain amount of etiquette tour. I don't want to slow
- 30:44Speaker 7: up anybody's game. I don't want to be the guy
- 30:46Speaker 7: that creates the eye roll for people that do take
- 30:49Speaker 7: it serious just because I'm not taking it serious. I
- 30:52Speaker 7: don't want to be that guy that slows things up
- 30:54Speaker 7: or makes your experience worse. So me and you of
- 30:57Speaker 7: golf Dan along the way, I will with you to
- 31:00Speaker 7: make sure am I doing that? Do I not do that?
- 31:03Speaker 7: I just want to make sure that I'm not ruining your.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Experience, Yes, and that I think that that's very considerate,
- 31:08Speaker 4: because you know, I want to know what happens when
- 31:10Speaker 4: somebody chucks their club. There's there's two seconds of this
- 31:15Speaker 4: awkward silence, and the third second is usually somebody who
- 31:19Speaker 4: can't control their laughter, and then that makes it worse
- 31:22Speaker 4: for the guy who just checked this boy. But there
- 31:26Speaker 4: is this awkward sense. I was playing with a cousin
- 31:29Speaker 4: of mine and he teed off on a short part four.
- 31:34Speaker 4: It wasn't an awful shot like It wasn't like it
- 31:36Speaker 4: didn't go ten yards, It just didn't go where he
- 31:40Speaker 4: didn't want it to. And the next thing, you know,
- 31:44Speaker 4: he chucked into the pond, you know, like a helicopter
- 31:47Speaker 4: like you know, it's a hipher and it was just
- 31:52Speaker 4: the two of us, so there was so it was
- 31:54Speaker 4: super awkward.
- 31:56Speaker 3: What do you say at that point? It's the only
- 31:59Speaker 3: person you've got a chance to talk to. It is
- 32:02Speaker 3: super awkward. Should he have checked this club?
- 32:05Speaker 4: No?
- 32:05Speaker 3: Did I have the story to tell on radio years later? Yes?
- 32:09Speaker 3: So I guess I'm now glad that he did it,
- 32:11Speaker 3: but it was awkward. I was gonna say, how did
- 32:13Speaker 3: you handle it?
- 32:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 32:14Speaker 3: What do I say down the fairway? If if my
- 32:17Speaker 3: ball's in play? Here? There's there's nothing you can say.
- 32:20Speaker 4: You almost have to let them have the serve, Like,
- 32:23Speaker 4: just let them whenever they want to talk and they
- 32:26Speaker 4: want to say something, just let them say it. I
- 32:29Speaker 4: don't want to say, do you just want to drop
- 32:30Speaker 4: it by mine? Where do you want to drop it?
- 32:33Speaker 3: Are? Yeah? Are you gonna play? You're gonna play this whole?
- 32:37Speaker 2: What?
- 32:37Speaker 3: Like?
- 32:38Speaker 4: There's nothing that you could say, but it's completely awkward
- 32:40Speaker 4: joaking Neeman, It's a bad look for golf. It's a
- 32:43Speaker 4: bad look for a professional who does that. But I
- 32:46Speaker 4: also do have an understanding of what's at stake. John
- 32:49Speaker 4: rom today dropped an F bomb that was so loud
- 32:52Speaker 4: you almost thought it was on Mike like it was
- 32:55Speaker 4: of what he said when he missed the butt on
- 32:58Speaker 4: the night told their kids around the whole. I'm sure
- 33:00Speaker 4: that they heard it. If you go to a golf tournament,
- 33:03Speaker 4: you're gonna bring kids at times, right, they're there to
- 33:06Speaker 4: get autographs. I don't know if they're already hear John
- 33:08Speaker 4: ram yelly F word, but that's what he did. And
- 33:11Speaker 4: if Joaquin even's throwing clubs, I sure sec wouldn't want
- 33:14Speaker 4: my kid to see it. But it just makes it
- 33:16Speaker 4: awkward for everybody, completely awkward. And now golf's putting a
- 33:20Speaker 4: crack down on it.
- 33:22Speaker 5: Yeah, no, it's it is a bad look and it
- 33:24Speaker 5: does make it awkward. I think the the more interesting
- 33:27Speaker 5: part is the reaction of everybody else and how do
- 33:31Speaker 5: you react and is there a proper reaction? And then,
- 33:34Speaker 5: like you said, you know, if it's a foursome somebody
- 33:38Speaker 5: who cracks the first joke, and then do you laugh
- 33:41Speaker 5: at it? Do you not laugh at it is it
- 33:43Speaker 5: does the guy who threw the club or broke the
- 33:46Speaker 5: club laugh at it.
- 33:46Speaker 3: It's a hole.
- 33:48Speaker 4: When you're in a foursome and that happens, you have
- 33:50Speaker 4: two other guys or two other people that are in
- 33:53Speaker 4: the same boat. So like you're all kind of together
- 33:57Speaker 4: on this.
- 33:57Speaker 3: What do you do? What do you do with Chuck?
- 33:58Speaker 3: Get twosome?
- 33:59Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just one on one talking about Lonely Island.
- 34:03Speaker 4: That's where it is. That golf cart can get quiet.
- 34:06Speaker 4: He is erin Torres. I'm Dan Beyer. They are underway
- 34:09Speaker 4: in Seattle, US and Australia Group D. In the second
- 34:12Speaker 4: half fiftieth minute, US continues to lead by a score
- 34:15Speaker 4: of two nil. Again No Christian Polisic today out because
- 34:19Speaker 4: of his calf injury, and if the US holds onto
- 34:22Speaker 4: this lead, he may not play in their group finale
- 34:24Speaker 4: against Turkey as so that's something to something to watch
- 34:28Speaker 4: to rest him for the knockout stage.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
- 34:32Speaker 2: the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
- 34:36Speaker 2: dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
- 34:40Speaker 2: listen live.
- 34:43Speaker 4: Chris, don't go anywhere because we're gonna have a meeting
- 34:45Speaker 4: of the minds. But I want people to know that
- 34:48Speaker 4: there is a tripleheader on Fox today of World Cup action.
- 34:51Speaker 4: So you've got the US against Australia. Then there's Group
- 34:54Speaker 4: C play Morocco and Scotland and'll be playing in Foxborough
- 34:58Speaker 4: at six o'clock Eastern eight already Eastern time. Haiti takes
- 35:01Speaker 4: on Brazil in the other Group C match. That one's
- 35:04Speaker 4: in Philadelphia where Iowa Sam is going to be headed tomorrow.
- 35:07Speaker 4: So those are going to be the three games on Fox,
- 35:09Speaker 4: and then tonight on FS one it's more Group dplay
- 35:12Speaker 4: with Turkey A against Paraguay. That's at eleven o'clock Eastern
- 35:15Speaker 4: time tonight. So magnificent day of World Cup action. Aaron,
- 35:20Speaker 4: When you walked in today, could you sense the tension?
- 35:22Speaker 4: Could you sense the tension in the building? Vibes felt
- 35:25Speaker 4: a little off.
- 35:26Speaker 5: I thought it was about Team USA, but then I
- 35:29Speaker 5: learned there are much bigger stakes than just Team USA
- 35:32Speaker 5: advancing to the round of thirty two.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Jason Stewart, Iowa Sam, you guys are here every single day.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Today felt a little bit different.
- 35:37Speaker 4: With Chris Purfett and Mike Lingard in the same building,
- 35:41Speaker 4: in the same studios.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Did you guys get that sense.
- 35:44Speaker 8: There was eerie quietness attention like a duel at high noon?
- 35:49Speaker 7: Yeah, I sense peacocking. There was visual peacocking, the raising
- 35:55Speaker 7: of the chests as they walked through the hallways, just
- 35:59Speaker 7: kind of daring you to test their soccer knowledge and fandom.
- 36:04Speaker 3: That's what. That's what. That's what that peacock and is
- 36:06Speaker 3: I I.
- 36:06Speaker 4: We all we all love them, and we love these
- 36:10Speaker 4: two guys right here, But do you all know the
- 36:12Speaker 4: soccer fan that wants them to let you know and
- 36:16Speaker 4: make sure that you know that they know about soccer?
- 36:19Speaker 4: The question is with you two, and I'll start with
- 36:22Speaker 4: Big Mike. Who do you think like is more soccer
- 36:25Speaker 4: guy here at Fox Sports Radio? You are Chris Prefet.
- 36:28Speaker 9: I'm gonna I'm gonna go ahead and give that to
- 36:30Speaker 9: Chris Purfet. Oh, even though I'm older and I have
- 36:33Speaker 9: been a soccer fan longer, I think he might pay
- 36:36Speaker 9: more attention.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Oh okay, well we'll find out, Chris Door you wait.
- 36:40Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. It's me that the old bait
- 36:47Speaker 3: and switch.
- 36:49Speaker 6: Well, if I need really musty old names of players
- 36:52Speaker 6: long long ago, I will go to Mike. Otherwise I'm
- 36:55Speaker 6: gonna hold myself about what's going wrong right now soccer.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Let's let's see who knows more at Fox Sports Radio
- 37:04Speaker 4: about soccer. Is it Chris Burfett at the news desk
- 37:08Speaker 4: or is it Mike Lingard Mike who doesn't run this
- 37:11Speaker 4: place but they say he does on Cavino and Rich
- 37:15Speaker 4: Aaron Torres, Jason Stewart, Iowa, Sam and myself just have
- 37:17Speaker 4: some questions for you guys. I'm just gonna start it out.
- 37:22Speaker 4: I'm gonna start it out with Chris. Chris outside of
- 37:25Speaker 4: the twenty twenty six World Cup, what's your favorite World
- 37:27Speaker 4: Cup memory?
- 37:29Speaker 6: My favorite World Cup memory would probably be the two
- 37:32Speaker 6: thousand and six World Cup where Italy won it all,
- 37:35Speaker 6: including my favorite player who I watch on his club side,
- 37:38Speaker 6: Francesco Toddy, the eighth King of Rome.
- 37:41Speaker 3: The peacocking is strong out of the eighth the clubs.
- 37:45Speaker 7: I watched him on the club side. So for us
- 37:48Speaker 7: who don't understand that, that means you watch him during
- 37:51Speaker 7: the regular season of this regular.
- 37:52Speaker 6: Teamyah, which is Syria as Roma. Who's jersey I am
- 37:55Speaker 6: wearing right now?
- 37:56Speaker 3: Oh? All right, Mike, what's your old Cup meant most
- 38:02Speaker 3: that would.
- 38:02Speaker 9: Be the World Cup final nineteen eighty two, Germany versus Italy.
- 38:08Speaker 9: I was I was literally in this West Germany. I
- 38:13Speaker 9: was literally in Germany at the time, playing soccer with
- 38:19Speaker 9: the team, the youth team that I was playing on,
- 38:22Speaker 9: and we watched the game in Germany. There were literally
- 38:26Speaker 9: riots in the streets on our way back after the game.
- 38:30Speaker 9: But yeah, being in Germany to watch the German versus
- 38:34Speaker 9: Italy final in nineteen eighty two, that would be my
- 38:38Speaker 9: World Cup.
- 38:39Speaker 7: The humble brage there, the humble brag in that description.
- 38:41Speaker 7: There's no humble about youth team plane in Europe. That
- 38:45Speaker 7: means you must have been pretty damn good in nineteen
- 38:47Speaker 7: eighty two. What you would have been? What eighteen? I
- 38:50Speaker 7: actually I was twelve. He was wow the Germans. I
- 38:55Speaker 7: wasn't getting paid. It wasn't a professional league or anything.
- 38:58Speaker 7: But I was in international soccer at twelve.
- 39:02Speaker 3: I was not a terrible soccer player.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Oh Man Torres, you want to you want to get
- 39:06Speaker 4: to know these soccer fans.
- 39:08Speaker 3: I think the tape measures already. You know, we've already
- 39:10Speaker 3: been able to pull it out to you.
- 39:12Speaker 5: So I have two tangential stories that I'll say for
- 39:14Speaker 5: another day. What Chris already semi got to the question.
- 39:19Speaker 3: That I was going to ask.
- 39:20Speaker 5: Okay, in true soccer fandom, how many individual soccer jerseys
- 39:29Speaker 5: or kids as they call them, have you used your
- 39:32Speaker 5: own hard earned money to purchase?
- 39:34Speaker 6: Chris, you go first, Oh, so it's just the ones
- 39:36Speaker 6: I've been Okay, because I had a friend in the
- 39:38Speaker 6: Netherlands who sent me about three different jerseys of his
- 39:41Speaker 6: team international friends. No, No, another one. I was running
- 39:44Speaker 6: a Lions podcast. He listens, He knew I was into
- 39:47Speaker 6: soccer and sent.
- 39:48Speaker 5: Me I was a slow Flori circies that have been
- 39:51Speaker 5: gifted to you as well, because obviously if it's a gift,
- 39:53Speaker 5: it's something that another would deem to be very important.
- 39:56Speaker 3: To from the Dutch. Get from the Dutch.
- 39:59Speaker 6: Yeah, so I have a Team USA jersey, the Waldos,
- 40:02Speaker 6: but those were from twenty twelve, not the ones they're
- 40:04Speaker 6: wearing right now. I have three of those ones from
- 40:07Speaker 6: the Netherlands. Do not ask me to remember which what
- 40:09Speaker 6: the name of the club is. I've got this Roma jersey,
- 40:12Speaker 6: I have a Team Italy practice jersey. I have a
- 40:17Speaker 6: Leonel Messi Argentina jersey and a Lionel MESSI sorry, not Messy.
- 40:23Speaker 6: I forget the player, but it was real Madrid. I
- 40:27Speaker 6: have one of those hanging up in the closet as well,
- 40:29Speaker 6: and then I think I have one from Venetsia as well.
- 40:33Speaker 6: They had some fantastic jerseys for a while when they
- 40:36Speaker 6: came up to Syria.
- 40:37Speaker 4: I want to let the listener know that you can
- 40:39Speaker 4: weigh in at Dan Byer on Fox, at Aaron Underscore Torres.
- 40:42Speaker 4: You can tweet at us who you think is winning
- 40:45Speaker 4: right now in this soccer showdown between Chris Burfett and
- 40:49Speaker 4: Big Michae Lingo.
- 40:50Speaker 5: By the way, I counted nine kicks, okay, I prefer
- 40:53Speaker 5: them as jerseys.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Sorry for me, make that ten.
- 40:56Speaker 6: I forgot. I have a Detroit City FC jersey as well.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Got to wrap a t right, got a rep a
- 41:01Speaker 3: dynastic all right, Michael Inguard.
- 41:03Speaker 5: And by way, not jerseys from your club days that
- 41:06Speaker 5: were given to you as part of your team issue.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Sure, I understand purchased or gift to you. What does
- 41:13Speaker 3: it count if I purchased it or gifted to somebody else? Yeah,
- 41:17Speaker 3: well no, because that's a reflection how big of a
- 41:19Speaker 3: fan they are.
- 41:19Speaker 9: So just for me, Yes, Okay, that's zero. I believe
- 41:25Speaker 9: it or not, I'm not and I'm not a jersey guy.
- 41:28Speaker 9: That's just not my my it's not my deal. I
- 41:31Speaker 9: don't even I've got one jersey for the Panthers that
- 41:34Speaker 9: was purchased for me. I don't have a Dodgers jersey.
- 41:37Speaker 9: I don't have a Lakers jersey. There are people I'm
- 41:40Speaker 9: kind of like that I'm not a jersey guy, but
- 41:43Speaker 9: I I mean, I am a Byron fan. If somebody
- 41:46Speaker 9: bought me a Bayern Munich jersey, i'd wear it.
- 41:49Speaker 6: And if I get to go over there for the
- 41:51Speaker 6: Lions game in November, I'll find you one.
- 41:54Speaker 3: I'll take it. I'll pay you back for it. Look
- 41:58Speaker 3: at that per fat Jason Stewart.
- 42:02Speaker 8: By the way, I was going to say, Mike, I'm
- 42:04Speaker 8: gonna tell Steve Coveno you're not a jersey guy.
- 42:06Speaker 3: I think he might be offended. That's fair, not cool, Jason.
- 42:10Speaker 3: You got any exams you want to give these two so.
- 42:13Speaker 7: You know they say brevity is the soul of wit.
- 42:16Speaker 7: I want your elevator pitch, Chris. I just want your
- 42:19Speaker 7: elevator pitch. You walk into a room, maybe somebody is
- 42:23Speaker 7: contemplating having some kind of a soccer commentator.
- 42:28Speaker 3: What are your credentials? I know that not the jersey
- 42:31Speaker 3: number of jersey.
- 42:32Speaker 7: I just want to know, like how, when where did
- 42:35Speaker 7: you start your soccer passion and what what made you?
- 42:39Speaker 7: What drew you to the sport and to give you
- 42:42Speaker 7: the passion that you do again elevator pitch brevity is
- 42:45Speaker 7: the soul of.
- 42:46Speaker 6: This is sorry is this is a question addressed to me?
- 42:48Speaker 6: What got me to start in?
- 42:50Speaker 3: Portion yourself on me?
- 42:52Speaker 8: They're selling yourself on the listeners, the essay portion of
- 42:56Speaker 8: the okay, this.
- 42:56Speaker 6: Is like watching football sometimes the tactical level of line
- 43:00Speaker 6: in real time, it's NonStop. It is There is no
- 43:06Speaker 6: careless movement in soccer. It may look very it may
- 43:11Speaker 6: look like it's kind of going across the field, but
- 43:14Speaker 6: everything is deliberate. Everything is for a purpose and when
- 43:18Speaker 6: a play happens, you can see all the moments that
- 43:20Speaker 6: line up for it.
- 43:22Speaker 7: Mike Glengard, if you had to sum up your passion
- 43:25Speaker 7: for soccer in the most brief, concise way possible, how
- 43:30Speaker 7: would you do that?
- 43:31Speaker 9: I would tell you I've been playing soccer since I
- 43:34Speaker 9: can remember, and managed to play in Europe.
- 43:38Speaker 3: As a youth when I was twelve years old.
- 43:41Speaker 9: I know the ins and outs of the game, and
- 43:43Speaker 9: I've coached it for decades, so I know the ins
- 43:49Speaker 9: and outs and the backs and forth of what's going
- 43:51Speaker 9: on on the pitch.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Oh, you want to follow up? Can I do a
- 43:55Speaker 3: bollop that?
- 43:56Speaker 5: What is the highest level that your tea, your coach
- 44:00Speaker 5: teams have ever?
- 44:01Speaker 3: Have you won any trophies that we should know about.
- 44:04Speaker 5: Sure, there are a room of trophies in your house
- 44:07Speaker 5: dedicated to your coaching accolades.
- 44:09Speaker 9: Okay, So the final year that I coached my little
- 44:13Speaker 9: brother's team, Okay, when they coached, we play tournaments all
- 44:17Speaker 9: summer long. Uh, and they managed to go thirty oh
- 44:23Speaker 9: and one.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Wow.
- 44:24Speaker 9: They never had more than two goals scored against them,
- 44:27Speaker 9: and they never scored less than two goals in a game.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Those are talking about that team all these years later.
- 44:33Speaker 3: That's right. You guys do like reunions. Yeah, actually we
- 44:37Speaker 3: have done a reunion. My little brother was not bad either.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Oh so pedigree. He's talking about pedigree that I don't know.
- 44:46Speaker 7: Is there?
- 44:46Speaker 3: Yeah? I didn't.
- 44:47Speaker 8: I didn't exactly play this your robust, well, sir, I
- 44:49Speaker 8: just all right, I was Sam. All right, the last
- 44:54Speaker 8: round here, it's going to be a trivia if you
- 44:55Speaker 8: have a follow up. But okay, yeah, so I got
- 44:57Speaker 8: one more. We got one more. Let's do a training
- 44:59Speaker 8: question for of you. All right, I'm gonna start with
- 45:01Speaker 8: Mike Linguard. You've been around a little longer, You've seen
- 45:03Speaker 8: more World Cups. Mike, tell me the last Middle Eastern
- 45:07Speaker 8: team or country to win the World Cup.
- 45:11Speaker 9: Oh, this is Middle Eastern. I don't believe there's been
- 45:18Speaker 9: a Middle Eastern team to win the Cup.
- 45:20Speaker 3: You are correct. They have got a trick question. It's
- 45:25Speaker 3: only South America and Europe yep ORACE has tried to.
- 45:31Speaker 8: Very good Mike, trick question, I'll tell you all right,
- 45:35Speaker 8: let's go to Chris Purfett here. If scoring three goal
- 45:39Speaker 8: goals is a hat trick, what is the term for
- 45:41Speaker 8: scoring two goals?
- 45:43Speaker 6: It's a brace?
- 45:43Speaker 3: You got it? They've both got it correct. Wow, this
- 45:47Speaker 3: is neck and neck. I have a few trivia questions
- 45:50Speaker 3: that I looked up before this. You want to lay
- 45:52Speaker 3: them on them? Do you want to?
- 45:53Speaker 4: I have a jet I don't have a trivia question.
- 45:55Speaker 4: I just have more of a general Okay, you go,
- 45:57Speaker 4: you go.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Reo Is it a brace? What is a brace?
- 46:02Speaker 6: Comes from hunting? Yes, it comes from hunting. If you
- 46:04Speaker 6: come back with two pheasants, it's a brace. It's a
- 46:06Speaker 6: brace a pheasants, so to there's a brace.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Look at that.
- 46:09Speaker 8: When I looked up what the like the origin of
- 46:12Speaker 8: that term was, I couldn't even find that explanation.
- 46:14Speaker 3: That's amazing, well done for both of you.
- 46:16Speaker 4: I've I've never heard that term up until now. In
- 46:20Speaker 4: this World Cup it's always been so and so scored
- 46:23Speaker 4: two goals.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Nobody ever said he had a brace.
- 46:26Speaker 6: It's much more of a British thing. I've noticed, like
- 46:29Speaker 6: English commentators it is.
- 46:30Speaker 8: I saw it in an article for Mbappe and for
- 46:33Speaker 8: uh Holland when they both had the two goals on Tuesday.
- 46:36Speaker 4: I just want to I just want to get this
- 46:38Speaker 4: in here and then, and I know Aaron has one more.
- 46:40Speaker 4: Is we decide who had Fox Sports Radio is the
- 46:43Speaker 4: bigger soccer head.
- 46:44Speaker 3: Is it Chris Parfed or is it big Mic Chris.
- 46:47Speaker 4: I'll start with you, have you gone out of your
- 46:49Speaker 4: way to correct someone here at Fox Sports Radio with
- 46:51Speaker 4: a soccer term that they maybe said wrong or pronunciation
- 46:56Speaker 4: or anything in that regard?
- 46:58Speaker 6: Uh sometimes you know what not here at Fox. And
- 47:01Speaker 6: to be honest, my rule when it comes to terms
- 47:03Speaker 6: like pitch and whether it's nill or zero is I
- 47:07Speaker 6: don't care. I would rather Americans enjoyed. If you want
- 47:10Speaker 6: to call it the field that they're on. If you
- 47:12Speaker 6: want to call it, say two zero, or do the
- 47:14Speaker 6: winning score first instead of who the home side is,
- 47:17Speaker 6: be my guest because I want more people in on
- 47:19Speaker 6: this sport.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Same question to you, Big Mike.
- 47:21Speaker 9: Yes, I have and I will continue to do so
- 47:23Speaker 9: on a regular basis. Don't screw it up if you
- 47:26Speaker 9: don't know what you're talking about. I'm going to help
- 47:27Speaker 9: you out. And I'm not even talking about on the air.
- 47:29Speaker 9: I'm also talking about just in casual conversation. Correc wouldn't
- 47:32Speaker 9: affect anyone else. Yes, all right, your trivia question, Aron Tory.
- 47:36Speaker 5: Let's get the trivia question because I want to get
- 47:37Speaker 5: to the panel here, the distinguished panel of Me, You, Dan, Iowa,
- 47:42Speaker 5: Sam and Jason.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Back to the kit question. The jersey question.
- 47:48Speaker 5: Does it make you a bigger fan to have purchased
- 47:53Speaker 5: ten like Chris Prefett although three were gifted, but that
- 47:56Speaker 5: I count it because it means somebody loves you or
- 47:59Speaker 5: are you? So that's a big fan that it is
- 48:01Speaker 5: implied and you don't have to wear a kit for
- 48:05Speaker 5: everyone to know just how big of a fan you are,
- 48:08Speaker 5: Like Mike.
- 48:08Speaker 4: Listing, this is interesting. There is a culture in Gulf.
- 48:13Speaker 4: It's called the logo culture. People want to wear logos
- 48:16Speaker 4: of the courses that they've played, and a lot of
- 48:17Speaker 4: the top courses are private courses, so you're not a
- 48:20Speaker 4: member of that course. Like, if you play it, you
- 48:22Speaker 4: get an item. I'm guilty of it as well. I
- 48:23Speaker 4: have I have hats and shirts from clubs I don't
- 48:27Speaker 4: belong to, but I've been fortunate enough to play.
- 48:29Speaker 9: I think I actually bought you a hat once from
- 48:31Speaker 9: a club you did, and it's a public course, so
- 48:34Speaker 9: I'm free to wear that. But like it's there's this
- 48:37Speaker 9: there's this weird sort of like level to it. I'm
- 48:40Speaker 9: almost to the point now where I'm like trying to
- 48:42Speaker 9: go logo less because I don't to what Aaron.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Is saying, I don't want to be that guy. Yeah,
- 48:47Speaker 4: I don't want to be that guy with everything. So
- 48:50Speaker 4: I'm almost thinking less is more because I'm just gonna
- 48:53Speaker 4: wear what I'm gonna wear.
- 48:54Speaker 6: Okay, so I would say to that A there was
- 48:59Speaker 6: a point where I think soccer jerseys have become part
- 49:02Speaker 6: of fashion, and for me, who usually wears just playing
- 49:05Speaker 6: T shirts, they are pretty much like if I want
- 49:07Speaker 6: to be fashionable or have something unique wearing on, I
- 49:10Speaker 6: will find a soccer jersey. The other thing is I
- 49:12Speaker 6: do have a friend who works with Adidas, and uh yeah,
- 49:16Speaker 6: no I I I do root for the three stripes
- 49:18Speaker 6: over over the swoosh.
- 49:19Speaker 7: Again, just bragging about kind of the international ties, like
- 49:24Speaker 7: if you if you didn't realize that a couple of
- 49:25Speaker 7: minutes ago, Chris had said that I don't I want
- 49:27Speaker 7: Americans to enjoy soccer. In other words, I see soccer
- 49:32Speaker 7: from more of the international viewpoint. But if Americans will
- 49:35Speaker 7: enjoy this, and then he just basically in America, not
- 49:41Speaker 7: in Germany.
- 49:41Speaker 3: I German.
- 49:42Speaker 4: Chris has got some work to you. Got a last question,
- 49:44Speaker 4: one quick one. We'll convey our ruling.
- 49:46Speaker 8: Okay, do either of you own a soccer scarf? And
- 49:48Speaker 8: how many I do own one?
- 49:51Speaker 3: It's an IX Amsterdam scarf.
- 49:54Speaker 6: Okay, I really want to get one of these bolloguan
- 49:57Speaker 6: ones that are going around.
- 49:58Speaker 5: I do not have a scarf right now. Because I
- 50:00Speaker 5: don't wear scars, I thought to hold him up. I
- 50:02Speaker 5: bought one when I was in Barcelona for FC Barcelona.
- 50:04Speaker 5: Fun fact about me, So I don't know where that
- 50:05Speaker 5: puts me into this mix here.
- 50:06Speaker 4: But well, the fact that Big Mike pronounced it correctly
- 50:10Speaker 4: and not Ajax as you will. I think that's another
- 50:13Speaker 4: another point. You know, our decision is going to have
- 50:15Speaker 4: to come up on the other side. It truly is
- 50:19Speaker 4: who was the biggest soccer head. There was a lot
- 50:21Speaker 4: of topping I think there. I will say this. I
- 50:24Speaker 4: think Chris Purfett weaved in some toppers. Big Mic came
- 50:28Speaker 4: over the top with him. It's right now, it's too
- 50:31Speaker 4: close to call on my mind.
- 50:33Speaker 3: Unlike Team USA matches, this is neck and neck.
- 50:35Speaker 4: Yes, still to nil, seventy fifth minute in Seattle, US
- 50:39Speaker 4: up on Australia. No goals so far in the second half.
- 50:42Speaker 4: But if there is a goal, you're going to hear
- 50:44Speaker 4: haulk Hogan's steam. I go from the Americans right here
- 50:47Speaker 4: on Fox Sports Radio
