[upbeat rock music] Ah, ahoy, hoy.
• 0:15
Welcome everybody to Full Spectrum Recycling number 76. Yeah. Very patriotic of us. Spirit love. To my right, as always, is JK Livin. Hello. And then we have an interloper, Mr. John Trusky. Hey, everybody.
• 0:32
And then of course, T-Burger. Hey there. In his usual relaxed state. Quite relaxed. What's happening, gentlemen? Beautiful day. Beautiful day in the neighborhood. Cooling off a little bit in Milwaukee lately. Mm-hmm.
• 0:49
Birthday month, so all is well. No. No. Well, for some of us, yes. Are we coming up on the 9th or something? Yep, yep. Next, next Wednesday. No, you're September 9? Mm-hmm. Nine. Nine. I got you. Nine.
• 1:02
I got you the next month. Ah. Excellent. Birthdays all around. Yeah, great. Age. I got a haircut for mine. Got them all cut, actually. I got a bicycle for mine. Nice. You win. [laughs] [laughs] Totally won. Totally won.
• 1:19
Well, Tony gets a haircut every three years. How often do you get a bicycle? Every three years. [laughs] Exactly. So there is a little symmetry there. All right. I get... Yeah. Yeah.
• 1:28
[laughs] Yep, JK picked up a Surly Low Side. Low Side. [singing] I... That thing kept staring at me. If I didn't already have so many bikes and am now turning one of mine into a- It's a really fun bike to ride.
• 1:44
Well, let's put it this way. That's what you're... John is, is my wheel builder. He, he- Yes... builds excellent wheels, and he is here- John is also my wheel builder... besides- Wheel builder to the stars... right.
• 1:53
Besides to be- And us... our, our show guest today, he's picking up a, a Monet Money Bikes modified Shimano coaster brake hub, which we're building into a Stans Arch 27.5 wheel, which is- Well, that's curious.
• 2:11
[laughs] Right? Which is going, which i- which is going on that bike behind you, which is going to be de-electrified and, and newly clunker-ified, so. [laughs] Duh. Skid bike. Yeah, it's gonna be my clunker.
• 2:23
That's a, it's a one-off frame six... And it was a 650B to start with, so I thought, "Well, what better thing to do to it than then put a coaster brake on it for now?" [laughs] It'll work. [laughs] Yeah.
• 2:34
For sure, for sure. Especially that coaster brake. It's fancy. Yeah.
• 2:36
And, uh, and Money, he, uh, that, he, he modifies the, uh, the stock Shimano hub with better bearings, better grease, better, better overhaul, and it makes it a 135 spaced hub too- Oh, cool... which is really cool.
• 2:50
And it's got a big ass fin thing on it for heat dissipation as well. [upbeat rock music] Wow. Yeah. That guy was really cool. The sounds of the city, man. Yeah, my legs don't make that noise. [laughs] My ass does.
• 3:02
Sometimes me too. We are Polish after all, my friend. [laughs] We've got- Where's the kraut? Where's the kraut? [laughs] Yeah, we've got the door open 'cause it's a beautiful night in the neighborhood.
• 3:11
There was a- The-... I think a, a yogurt class across the street. There was, next to the empanada cart. And there's two Polish people that may have been having sauerkraut, so the- Mm-hmm... ventilation is at a premium.
• 3:23
[laughs] Mm-hmm. Just, uh- Right. [laughs] Forward thinking, you see. What did you ride to the shop today, John?
• 3:29
Uh, I rode my All-City Dropout, uh, their first generation of the, of their, uh, freestyle fixed gear bike, which I've...
• 3:38
I was the original purchaser of said frame and built it up, and then I sold it to my friend Joe of Sturdy Bike fame, and then he sold it back to me, and then I sold it back to him.
• 3:48
[laughs] And then he sold it back to me, and then I sold it back to him, and then he finally sold it back to me again, because we had this little unwritten rule where if we're thinking about getting rid of it, we have to bring it up to the other person first.
• 3:58
That's always my rule, too. [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fir- first right of refusal. Yep. Yep.
• 4:02
And it's always changed little bits here and there through its entire course of life, but the, uh, the bones have pretty much stayed the same. The headset is still the same coarse headset that I put in the thing.
• 4:14
Um- Is it still fixed? It's still fixed, yep. I'm running a, a Halo, uh, fixed G hub, which is a hyperglide HG, uh, fixed hub. So it uses a, a single HG, uh, single speed cog on, on a fixed hub.
• 4:30
It's hands down the most ingenious thing, and it came out to be more ingenious when
• 4:36
the two previous hubs I had, uh, on different bikes, both of them blew lockrings out, and this is the first time in 25 years of riding fixed I've ever had lockrings blow off
• 4:48
that couldn't be explained by, you know, ignorant error. [laughs] Radio viewers, John's a machine. [laughs] Maybe it's just massive power you're generating these days. I don't think so. I mean, it was just, uh...
• 5:02
After the last one- Oh, shit... it was just... And having to kind of half pedal and then, you know, BMX brake stop on the way home from work, it was just decided,
• 5:11
"I'll spend the money and I'll buy these hubs and see how it works out," because worse things happen. I won't be blowing a lockring off. I'll just be blowing through the splines on the, on the hub body. Uh.
• 5:21
Is it the aluminium or steel hub body? It's aluminum. Oh. Wow. It's, it's all machined into the hub shell itself, so it's- Fascinating... it's a dedicated fix. It's- Fascinating.
• 5:30
You should put a link to that in the, uh, meeting- [laughs]... meeting notes. While we were, uh, rambling around outside the front of the shop before the show, there was a couple of others that wheelie...
• 5:40
The w- Wheelie Wednesday... wheelie milly mob people. Oh, wheelie Wednesday.
• 5:44
There, there's a, there's a kid in there, a couple of them, that he's doing a 30 mile an hour wheelie fixed down the street for about at least two blocks that we saw. But- Mm-hmm... yeah, he's... I've seen him around.
• 5:54
He's pretty, pretty talented with that wheelie thing. Yeah. There's a few of those guys. They kind of, I think, are based out of Vulture Space mostly, but- Yeah
• 6:01
A few of them live right over on, uh, Fratney just a block away or so. Of course. It's River West. Right?
• 6:07
[laughs] We should have met Have you been, uh, have you been checking out Fratney since they've been doing all the modifications for the bike boulevard type street action? No, I don't really have a reason to.
• 6:18
Anybody else? They are. Yeah. It's, it's coming along.
• 6:20
There's definitely been- Well, 'cause it, it went active, active streets as kind of a preliminary for the bike boulevard part, just to get everyone's asses, like, in their head space ready for that.
• 6:33
Now they're actually digging shit up, which actually- Yeah... kind of compromises [laughs] the activity part of our program. Yeah.
• 6:41
I, I don't know if they're being specifically slow, because there's, there was some spots where you just can't, you definitely can't get a car through it. I mean, you can- Right... kind of go around it on your bike.
• 6:49
But- Uh, yeah. Fratney and Locust are a burlap right now. You're not getting through there. Oh, right. Yeah. You can't even- Uh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Unless you're on a fat bike. You can't even- Exactly...
• 6:56
yeah, you can't even get- Well, no, I w-... at least lost on burlap... I, I, I was with Kim and she was on her fat bike, and I kinda forgot she was on, so I was like, "Ah, shit.
• 7:06
Let's, you know, okay, sidle over this way." And then all of a sudden I look and she's just brap, [laughs] right ass through. I'm like- Nice... "Huh." Somebody's gotta show you how to do it. Exactly. I know.
• 7:15
That's right. Yeah, yeah. In case Chewy's listening, I braped right through that in the, uh, with the electric, uh, bore Sunday, Saturday. Yeah, Tony's been checking out the Surface 604 bore electric fat bike.
• 7:26
It's a beast. And there's one word to describe it so far. It's a big bike. Beast. It's a beast. It's a beast. It's a great bike. You know what? I, I, I like a lot about it though. There's some fun stuff about that bike.
• 7:37
It's, you know, it's a workout, which, you know, the whole myth of e-bikes are cheating. Not if you're riding that. Mm. Um, it's a very casual bike to ride. It's very comfortable. That seat post- Pretty stiff...
• 7:49
it's got a, it's a, sort of a- Yeah, the most premium seat. Yeah... suspension seat post deal that's really pretty- But it's still-... pretty plush... it's pretty stiff, that's for sure. And, uh, but it cruises nicely.
• 8:00
I could really see it for, you know, like, I can't wait to take it off-road. I, I, it was all urban, you know, back alleys and stairs and stuff, and it handled that like a dream.
• 8:09
Yeah, the way it's currently set up with the racks and the metal fenders and all that, I kinda see it as sort of an urban assault- Hunting... vehicle and a hunting, yeah, kind of a hunting bike.
• 8:16
But for- It's a hunting bike... we've had other Surface 604s in, and, uh, taking the accoutrements off it, it becomes a little more trail friendly I guess. Nimble. I wouldn't...
• 8:28
Yeah, I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it nimble, but it- It's not... it's, it certainly is adequate. And I think most people that buy that bike are probably gonna be riding two track or city streets.
• 8:39
That said, you know, I mean- It's a great ride... I don't know what's in your neighborhood, but you could be riding this thing on it.
• 8:44
So I'm gonna check the river trails on Saturday, just do a couple of burnouts quick and up and down on that. [laughs] See what it's like, just to, you know. Well, watch out for John, 'cause he- Yeah...
• 8:52
he'll come flying off a jump right over your head. Nice. Hopefully we'll get pictures of that. No, then you gotta stop by the Blair Witch compound by the- You know what we should do?...
• 8:59
urban- I got an idea for that bike. Urban. 'Cause, uh, we did a, we did another, um, Steel Is Real recon ride last week. Uh, Marcus, Zito, and I, uh, did 35 miles, so it was more- Nice...
• 9:12
more than just the, [laughs] more than just the actual route. But, um, we went into the Milwaukee underground for the first time in a few years. Nice. Oh, nice. So it's actually accessible again.
• 9:23
Um, I only got my feet wet a little bit, and we went to the first- Did you throw out those shoes or? No, I got them on my feet right now. Nice. Um, th- we went to the first tunnel junction.
• 9:34
We didn't go further because M- Marcus was the only one with lights, which you've been- That sounds about par for course... you've been, you've been in the underground before, haven't you? It's pretty dark.
• 9:42
Uh, it's been a long time, and it was pretty fuzzy at that point in time. Right. So. Oh, yeah. So, so it's doable, and we may put it as a, an alt route for the Steel Is Real ride if people are feeling extra adventurous.
• 9:53
And Chewy's coming. Spinner, I believe, is coming. So I know at least five people that are going in there. [laughs] Yeah, that's for sure.
• 10:01
And- Well, and in between stop to stop, there is a relaxed and groovy on the road route. Right. Yeah. Yeah. That was- Where, where, where you can, where that can be- It's certainly out there. It can happen...
• 10:12
relaxed and groovy. Yeah. Yeah, we- And that, and that alt stop in that zone- Right. Yeah, th- that's what we kind of-... would allow-...
• 10:19
went around the route for ostensibly was to f- to just dial in the road portion of it. Yeah. But we ended up in Honey Creek again anyway, so. I knew you were gonna. [laughs] I know.
• 10:29
I, I, as I was over at my mom's, I'm going, "I know those fuckers." You road all the way out there. Why wouldn't you go into the creek when you can? I know. I'm going like, "How...
• 10:35
If they're gonna be right there, there's no chance they're not going to go in there for fuck's sake." [laughs] So Steel Is Real, September 19th here in Milwaukee. It's somewhat COVID friendly. All the bars have outside,
• 10:48
outside areas, and they're very... We've been trying to find places that are being proactive about being safe. Mm-hmm. And we're discouraging people from getting into extra large groups.
• 10:58
So we're trying to, you know, get your, get your small, you know, your buddy group of, you know, six, eight folks that you normally ride with and kinda do your own thing, but- Stagger about... but maybe- It's not bad...
• 11:09
but maybe, you know, meet up with a few folks here and there outside on along the way, so. See how that goes.
• 11:16
But meanwhile, since it's not like the original where w- we're all together at the beginning and we look at everybody's steel bike. You know, you can go to, uh, s- what is it?
• 11:26
Steel Is Real MKE 2020 on Facebook, and post a picture of the steel bike that you would ride on Steel Is Real. That would be really cool. And then is that the judging-ish? I, you know what? Why not?
• 11:38
I mean, the most- Makes sense... does the most comments win? Does the... Do I just get to pick? I mean, [laughs] we'll come up with some criteria to- [laughs]...
• 11:46
to make people that spend a lot of times polishing their bikes feel good. Very fluid. That would be me. Right? I'm just throwing a bike out there. Polish or polish?
• 11:54
What's the, uh, what's the maximum size of a donut wheel bike? I think 20- Oh. It, it was, I think it's been 24 in the past 24 inch would be your bagel wheel bike.
• 12:06
Anything under 24 That's what always threw me off when I got the- Rolling in like a bagel... handful of stickers.
• 12:11
  I don't know that we're gonna have that stupid category this year, though I'm like, I don't even know what I'm... I'm, I'm like, what? A donut? A bagel? A buh, a bih, a buh, a bih.
• 12:20
I didn't, I didn't make up the original categories. Although- Although this, they, they have changed...
• 12:22
the idea of that tunnel is really enticing and sounds like it'd be a really fun ride Well, if, if people wanna do the tunnel, I would recommend at least a plus bike and lights.
• 12:31
A fat bike is totally the way to go in there All right. I might have to pass. Well, I, I could do mine There was, there was a little bit of sediment in the bottom- Let's see...
• 12:38
a little sand What about a cruiser that has lawn and garden tires on it? Would that be approachable? Well, with, with maximum legs you can do whatever you want. No.
• 12:46
I mean, the very, the several of the early times I did that- Want to roll that?... it was on a mountain bike and you- If you have touches- If you can't ride, guess what? You get off and push for a little bit.
• 12:52
[laughs] It's not really that big of a deal And, and if you have bouts with claustrophobia, I remember this- Maybe stay out... no, not necessarily stay out, but be prepared to know that you can turn around
• 13:04
anytime you want to, because that is what is done- Right, and that's-... by I. [laughs] Definitely the thing about it is you have to turn around at some point- Exactly... because you can't go out the other end. It, yeah.
• 13:13
Oh, really? And that's the thing. Yeah. Yeah. And that, that's what everyone loves. Oh. And I'm like, "I know I can get out this way. I have no fucking idea where I'm going." [laughs] So it, yeah. With- Whees...
• 13:22
out and back it's a m- it's a mile and a half out and back And I was hyperventilating, too. [laughs] It's three quarters a mile each way- Gotcha... to put it another way. There's a lot going on.
• 13:29
[laughs] That's kinda cool. That sounds really cool. And if they have some kinda motor sports event going on at State Fair Park, it's pretty interesting, 'cause the cars make a lot of racket- Well, I-...
• 13:37
and you're going right under the track, which is pretty cool That is pretty cool I would be surprised if they actually have anything going on at State Fair Park They've got, they've had drag racing, they've had- Drag racing.
• 13:45
Oh, drag racing... I don't know if they were schools. They've had a lot of stuff going on there the- Drag racing. Drag racing The, the, a virtual state fair? Yes. They have a 300-foot- [laughs] Yeah...
• 13:54
300-foot drag strip. [laughs] Which- That's short. [laughs] Yeah. That's very short. Short. I mean, you just get up into first gear barely and you're, you're done.
• 14:04
But I, there was 350 cars at it the last Tuesday night one, so. There's a drag bar? Which I was not at. I just know somebody that was. There's a drag bar in West Allis? Yes. Oh. You are correct, sir. That's interesting.
• 14:16
Tony's just making a lot of racket taking off his- Yes please, sir... his, uh- Yes, please... his headphones- Oh... over there... by the way- He's doing an important job...
• 14:22
ding, ding, ding He's doing a report, a, a reportant job. [bell ringing] Oh, yeah. Let's see here. [bell ringing] Yeah. Top of the hill. Top of the hill there, hey? Yeah, yeah.
• 14:33
There's, uh, there's no shortage of beer in- There was the cart-... the refrigerator today... he was the cart before the horse. Right? So, I mean. [laughs] Yeah. So today's actual show beer is, uh,
• 14:45
Yankee USA IPA from Wisconsin Brewing over there in Verona, Wisconsin. It says, "Give me the bird." It's got an eagle on it. It's pretty cool. Give me the bird. I don't know. It's an American IPA.
• 14:58
I, it's, it's not blowing me out of the water with what it tastes like. No. Uh, initial- It's not bad... initial, initial taste was quite, uh, refreshing. It's a qualifiable IPA. Qualifiable, right. It's a 5.5 I think.
• 15:11
No, 6%. It's not over the top as far as the hop content goes and the BTUs and all that jazz. So- Oh, let me hop you up... but- The IBUs and the BTUs... IBUs, BTUs. The international- [laughs] You know...
• 15:21
bitter girlfriend units. [laughs] Yes. Yes. It's- [laughs] BU. So yeah, I, I- But yeah... I don't know how- It's, it's, it's a sessionable beer. Right It's a totally sessionable beer. Yeah.
• 15:29
It's, it's aggressively dry hopped with some of the original piney, citrusy, bad boy of American grown hops Cascade- [laughs] Speak, speaking of hops-... Centennial- That sounds like a-... and Chinook.
• 15:39
Yankee lands a five feathered flavor punch. Did you just say that? It says so- Great marketing. Great marketing... on the can But it, it just- But just your regular old beer...
• 15:47
kind of, it, it's just, I wouldn't say regular. It's just a, it's just a very sessionable IPA. Yeah If you're, if you're not a huge IPA fan, it's like, this is it, this is a very approachable IPA. That, that's your IPA.
• 15:55
Yeah. It's sort of along the lines of the all-day IPA kind of a vibe. Right By the way, uh, Saturday is the neighborhood, um, hops, um- You should cheat on the bore Um, I should. No.
• 16:06
What you do is you bring all your hops to Company Brewing- Oh, I thought you were doing the race...
• 16:09
and you get, you get, like, a pint of beer and then you give them all your hops and you tell them which varieties they are if you know, and then they collect them, and when they brew this neighborhood br- beer you go in and get a growler, and it's also on tap once in a while.
• 16:22
It's pretty damn good. Oh. So- What if, what if you don't give them hops and it's something that looks like hops? Fire up. [laughs] Just saying. I'm just curious.
• 16:33
Uh, you know, that would be a- Uh, that, that, that would be okay... that's like spike, yeah, a spike in the punch, really. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah.
• 16:37
So does, yeah, like, the, the Resin IPA, does that have some, uh- I don't know. It's-... some cannabis hops in them? You know, they are, you know, neighboring plants so to speak. I, that's what I'm saying. Mm-hmm.
• 16:48
You mean you grow your weed in your hop field so people don't see it? Or smell it. Or smell it. Or soy- To that- Or soybeans... to that point.
• 16:55
[laughs] Or soybeans, and those are my Eric Clovis if I- I, um, but I will say that Molly's uncle is a huge hops grower in Wausau, Wausau. Wausau. W-A-U-S-A-U. Wausau.
• 17:08
Um, and he is frequently visited by men in black suits and sunglasses.
• 17:13
[laughs] And he just opens the door and he knows it's, he's been doing this for f- 20 years now, so he just opens the door, invites them in, takes them through the house, walks them to the backyard.
• 17:22
He's like, "Here's my hops grove." Like- [laughs]... "Go ahead, do whatever you need to do, but I only grow hops." And I'm pretty sure he really seriously only grows hops, and, you know?
• 17:31
Well, yeah, you have to be that- But they-... you know, being that cavalier, I gue- So yeah, he, but he's like, "I show up on radar. I..." Or on satellite.
• 17:39
He's like, "I show up on satellite as someone growing fields of marijuana." Right. And growing fields of hops. Especially with that hippie hair he used to have. Not me, him. [laughs] Jesus. Um, bummer thing.
• 17:52
Bummer thing? What? Jen's, Jen's, uh, bike we just redid for a couple months ago got stolen. No. Yep. So keep your eyes out for a greenish giant s- single speed Oh, that sucks...
• 18:05
right over there on, uh, what was that, uh- Mm... right, right down the road from here, I guess. I don't know if it was stolen at our house or somewhere. Don't steal bikes, assholes. Yeah. All right.
• 18:12
Bike stealing- Assholes... assholes. Just Koreans. They're same little assholes that throw fucking glass bottles on the- Ride bike trail... biggest trail. Son of a bitch.
• 18:22
Wow, we've digressed into some pretty violent- Yeah... motives... you guys, you guys went dark here pretty quick, man. Yeah, just like- I got something to pull you out... second beer. What's that?
• 18:30
So John Petrucci or Yngwie Malmsteen, which one of these? I- [laughs] Fingie. Well, Petrucci just had his first album in 15 years come out- Oh... or something, and- I didn't see...
• 18:41
while a lot of it sounds kind of similar or derivative to stuff he's done, there's one song on it that's really badass, so. I just like saying Yngwie. I'd, I'd listen. He's not quite- At the end of the show...
• 18:50
he's not quite wee-wee. He's, he's, you know, I mean, Yngwie, uh- Yngwie, I, I don't even know how-... circus act kind of... to pronounce his fucking name. Yngwie Malmsteen. [laughs] Yeah, whatever.
• 18:59
However you wanna say. But anyway. It's just more fun to say his name. Wee-wee. [laughs] Wee-wee Bedstain. Wee-wee Bedstain? [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] That's good. I like that. [laughs] It's kinda like the- I gotta snort.
• 19:11
[laughs] He got a snorter there. Yeah, yeah. [laughs] It's kinda like, uh, you know, that, that, that big USA guy, uh, loose bed springs. Ah. Ah.
• 19:19
What'd you think of that, uh, video I sent you guys today of the, uh, guy playing The Pixies cover? I just, I saw it and- I didn't look at it... I haven't looked at it yet.
• 19:27
I did not, I was not on the email thread apparently, no. All right. We'll have to- John's out of the loop... yeah, I mean, this is what happens when I start crashing parties.
• 19:33
I, I think it's- I guess you'll get in the loop... it's one of the conversations I cannot be a part of. Thanks, Wayne. You'll get in the loop. Thanks, buddy. Yeah. Hey, I'm sorry about that.
• 19:38
Well, yeah, see, he's the Wizard of Oz. Ooh. See? Don't look behind the curtain. Fat Tire tour of Mil- Milwaukee. Milwaukee. Okay. Oh, that's so clever. Well, yeah, that was- Clever... the one that was- Yeah...
• 19:52
the ill-fated, "Let's go by Washington High School." 'Cause Gene Wilder went to Washington. I don't remember that. Oh, wait, wait. I'm thinking of, uh, Willy Wonka. Yeah. Don't mind me. [laughs] Look, a blue car.
• 20:08
[laughs] Oh. And really, that's a s- a black Surly Banner. I don't know. Yeah. [laughs] Jingling keys. Shiny keys. Jingling keys. All right. Where were we again? Man. Uh, how about this? How about this one?
• 20:19
[laughs] Okay, this is actually cycling oriented. Hey, there we go. Oh, boy. Uh, Adventurebike.org,
• 20:27
uh, announced that the US BR30, which is the route that goes from Milwaukee to the Mississippi River, is now official- Hmm. Hmm... with a side route in case the ferry that you use on the main route is not running.
• 20:43
Very cool. 269 miles, I think, with about 70%. I don't remember the exact number, but it's on, a lot of it's on rails to trails, trails, or other purpose-built trails. So easy, easy casual riding. Oh, right on.
• 20:56
That sounds cool. Great touring, you know- I don't know where Bl- what, what's the [laughs] what's the town it actually goes to? It's something Bluff Siding or something. I don't, I don't even know where that is.
• 21:06
It's some by L- somewhere by La Crosse, I think. Hmm. Hmm. It'll end in La Crosse. Where it ends up. I mean, that's a- There was a-... that's a gorgeous part of the state. I mean, once you get past, uh,
• 21:14
past Madison and Dane County there, that entire section of the state just gets rurally, um- Oh, yeah... oh, yeah... absolutely. The terrain is just- So I, um, this weekend-... the vistas are just amazing...
• 21:23
I did the, uh, the brewery ride, the race thing back and forth, and that was, um- Did you do it on the Boar? Did, did you come in- I did it on the Boar. Um- Did you, did you come in under six hours? Um,
• 21:36
maybe, but only by a little. All right. Um, I did stop and have a couple of extra beers, you know, so, you know. So you did it right then. Yeah. So- I met this guy named Bob who, uh- Were you TFL? Nah, probably not.
• 21:46
Really? Oh. I don't think so. Um- Man, you weren't trying hard enough then, obviously. I guess not. Uh- Yeah. Come on... I had to get stuff done at home- You weren't trying hard enough...
• 21:52
like grill out these incredible sausages I had. That's a whole nother story, though. Yeah. But I ran into this guy [laughs] named Bob who, uh- [laughs] Wait a second...
• 21:59
lives over by Seven Mile, and, you know, he was gonna call up and say there's some new trails up there that are pretty outstanding. I said, "You guys probably know about them, but I don't, so call it."
• 22:06
Is that Nine Mile or Seven Mile? I'm sorry, Nine Mile. Seven Mile. I know, nine plus two is seven, or mi- whatever. No, it's 11. [laughs] Whatever. Nine-nine is next week, and I know that. Minus nine. That's two.
• 22:19
Nicht nein. Nein, nein. Up in the Wausau area, there are, uh- Horses... there are some, uh, county park trails that got opened up that have been... I haven't been.
• 22:29
I made the mistake apparently last year on my trip around, uh, Michigan, Wisconsin, uh, my mountain bike trip, uh, of bypassing Wausau and just kinda keeping to the northern route and then sticking to the west.
• 22:40
But, uh, apparently in this county park system, uh, Rock Solid came through and developed an entire trail system that has progressive lines all the way through it.
• 22:53
Anything that, you know, is from, you know, beginners on up to, uh, advanced riders can go through at any time. Is that the, the Ringlay system? Um, I forget the name- I, I believe-... the name of it.
• 23:03
I forget the name of it, but- Well, it, yeah, they have Sylvan, which is like a gravity park. Sylvan, yes.
• 23:07
That's been there for a while, and then there's a newer park that is more of a point to point, but has, uh, your feature, different features that are slow, medium, and fast- Oh... kinda things.
• 23:21
Sadowski was talking about it, and it, it, I, it's something that I haven't ridden up there yet. And there's now a lot, hundreds of miles of trails in that area,
• 23:30
including Nine Mile and Sylvan and this Ringlay and Big A Plane, and there's just a bunch of them up there. I mean, I haven't rode up in Wausau since, arguably since my 20s back when I actually used to race wars.
• 23:41
So, I mean, that was Nine Mile, obviously. So I kind of feel bad for bypassing it 'cause the couple times I've actually drove through there for non-bicycling related purposes, it's like, there's gotta be potential here.
• 23:53
Right, right. There's gotta be potential here. Yeah, Rib Mountain and everything is- Yeah. Right. Totally. Is that Rib? That's Rib, isn't it? Yep. Yep. Yeah. Yeah, it's definitely worth checking out.
• 24:00
It, I mean, next to, next to Hayward, uh, up in that Chequamegon area, I think that Wausau has the most stuff going on of anywhere in the state right now Well, they got the terrain, they've got apparently enough public infrastructure support behind it to, to go through and push through and allow outside, uh, contractors to come through and build so- This is not- Godspeed [laughs] you know?
• 24:21
Yeah. This is not specifically a mountain bike thing, but in that general neck of the woods, uh, Neelsville, Chili, Granton, there's a new trail going in that's a rails to trails trail right up in there too- Oh...
• 24:33
just for the more casual folks. Mm. You can donate to it, the thing if you want to. There'll be a link in the show notes. Mm. If you want to, you could do that. That'd be nice. You won't be shamed if you do. Yeah.
• 24:46
I mean, if you're- But you will cele- Please do So, so, uh- You'll, you'll feel celebrated within yourself if you do. Yeah.
• 24:51
Neelsville is right by Levis Mountains, which is a very popular spot for your mountain biking activities. I like my mountain biking activities. I, I'm pretty down with, uh, riding the dirt. Yeah. That's some cool stuff.
• 25:03
Hey, here's something else cool. Mm. We got Wednesdays coming. Mm? Surly Wednesdays. We got some coming. Oh. Ah. [laughs] Oh, shit. You didn't tell me this. [laughs] I know. I'm like, I'm like, "It is Wednesday." Yeah.
• 25:14
And, uh, by the way I can- No, it's Friday... I can actually put a picture up now 'cause they lifted the embargo finally. Ah. So they'll be here in like- Fuck... eight minutes. Alex- No, no. Uh, probably about a week...
• 25:24
Alex is gonna kill me... week and a half. Alex is gonna kill me. It's a great purple color this year. Yeah, I know. It's a great bike. It's a really good value I think.
• 25:30
I'm so glad- It's got, it's got, uh- I'm so glad I got my spend out of the way. [laughs] Right? Yeah. You could've, could've had another- 'Cause I'm not tempted right now... you could've had another Tempted.
• 25:36
I'm tempted, but I'm not tempted. [laughs] Hey. Well, some of the cool stuff on it, I mean, they went to a NX 1 by 12, which is cool. They got now Tektro hydraulic brakes on there instead of the old, uh, BB7s. Yeah.
• 25:49
Uh, no, were, were there, uh- Or maybe Promaxes or something on 'em instead...
• 25:53
yeah, I thought, I thought they were running something a little bit much- If they were on Promaxes, then it's definitely an upgrade, but- Yeah. Well, I mean, even- BB7s... well, BB7s.
• 26:00
I don't think they were on BB7s on that. Was that BB5s or like a- 5s... MX5s from the days? Could've been something. I don't know. MX.
• 26:05
I haven't actually had a Wednesday, uh, s- you know, a, a- Well, you had one for a minute... an actual stock one in-... and sold, didn't it?... for a long time, so. Yeah. I mean...
• 26:13
But these are, uh, the, uh, the purple got me. It's like last year's prickly pear, uh- [laughs] It's a gorgeous color. It's- Oh, yeah... ice cream truck. I'm like, "Oh, that's so cool. We gotta get some of those."
• 26:20
Shining and glistening by, oh, my, my. Which by the way- Hey... if you're waiting for an ice cream truck, they're not coming for a while, so- Yeah... consider a Wyatt if you need a 197 bike instead of a 170 bike.
• 26:30
There you go. Ooh, ooh, ooh, I have a question. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. Mr. Cotton. Is that right, Horsehack? That's what I was shooting for. That's what I was shooting for. No, you gotta put your arm behind like that.
• 26:38
Do either of you know if the old school Surly, all three of you, the one by one has a derailleur hanger? The OG? The OG. No. No. That's what I thought. No. Okay. No.
• 26:49
That was a dedicated, uh, horizontal dropout set up on it. Okay. I actually had the original one by one Rat Ride. Y- you hear that, Steve? I had the one with the 24 inch and the big tires. Steve Roche, you hear that? No.
• 26:59
That's a nice bike. You hear that? That's, that's not happening. That, that was, that was, that was origin- yeah, the, the original one by one. 28 minutes into the show you can... [laughs] diagnose it.
• 27:08
Well, that, so- No, I've s- I can see it. [laughs]... right. The, the low side now has a hanger. It doesn't have any dangly bits for your cables.
• 27:14
You have to zip tie 'em or, or duct tape 'em or something on, but it does have a hanger if you really needed it. But that's sort of the up- Not here... upgraded version of the original- One by one... one by one.
• 27:26
Original Rat Ride really. Rat Ride. Yep, definitely. Well, and the geometry actually with the, with the- Low side... thank you. The low side is- [laughs]... you know, caught up.
• 27:36
I mean, it's no longer just like, you know... Well, I mean, let's, let's just talk, you know, 20 odd years of, of mountain bike geometry on that one. So I mean, the low side to me was like low slung top tube, sweet.
• 27:48
I mean, just this is a bike that's meant to party. Yep, for sure. [laughs] I loved the one with- It's like- I, I... Mine went to a lady in Florida, and she was super stoked to get it,
• 27:57
and I don't know why I got rid of it 'cause I had more bikes in the garage I guess, but it was- That happens... I'd still like to have one again. Yeah. So maybe I'll find one somewhere.
• 28:07
I just put those, uh, Sunrise bars- I can sell it back to you in about four years... on that bike over there, which comes on the low side. [laughs] Those are some wide bars right there. Yeah, those are gonna be wide.
• 28:14
Holy frijoles. What are they, 820s or something? I don't know. They're pretty wide. Oh, speaking of- Any riders coming up? Speaking of wide, uh, yeah, the handlebars. Those are the same ones we were just talking about.
• 28:24
Yeah. That's insanity. They don't fit through doors. They are super wide. Well, you don't... [laughs] You gotta, dude. You're riding your bike wrong, buddy. [laughs] Well, no, no.
• 28:32
I mean, bringing it into the house and duh-duh. It's like plank, and I'm like, "Oh, shit."
• 28:36
[laughs] Well, you have, you, you have to ride it like you're riding through the woods and do the little shimmy to get the door open. Yeah, but I'm going into my house. I know. I didn't, I didn't really think about that.
• 28:44
Right? Yeah. I'm, I'm beta testing it in a way out there. Well, just knock out the door, put in some sliders, and call it a done deal. Yeah. You know? [laughs] Also, Tony's gonna be bummed about this too. Uh-oh.
• 28:54
See that, uh, Wyatt Maverick over there? No. We don't have that anymore. No. Yeah. No. Fuck. Sam decided he needed- Great... another fat bike in the stable. [laughs] Come on. [laughs] Atta boy, Sam. Atta boy.
• 29:05
He did love that bike. You did tell me last week he loved that bike. I'm like, "All right." Yeah. That's a good call. Some bitch. It's a, it's a more, it's a rowdier bike than...
• 29:14
He's, he's got a couple fat bikes, but it's a rowdier bike than his, his other fat bikes. Oh, so he, you put... He, he's getting on something with suspension. With a Wren. And aluminum. Well, that's, he...
• 29:24
That's his Gnarvester over there too with the- Yeah... RS1 on it, so. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I think a, a, a USD fork is the way to go with that guy. Jesus. I'd look. He, he's looking for...
• 29:34
I don't know if anybody has any info on it. I gotta look it up, but if you, you can get some carbon fiber little stanchion protectors on that puppy. To the best of my knowledge, they never made 'em for it because- Right.
• 29:44
And maybe, I mean, I don't know if we can adopt the ones that come from the, uh, the Wren fork. There might be a way to do something. I bet you can make that fit. There's always a way to void a warranty. Exactly. Right?
• 29:52
And that thing is like- And the RS1 is- [laughs] The RS- It's like four years old now... the RS1 is pretty much on its way out the door, so there's really, really, uh- It's four years old, and it's Sam's. [laughs] Yeah.
• 30:01
So it's about 20 years for anybody else's, but- Yeah. In Sam years. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah. He brought his- It's about Sam years here... why isn't this bike shifting well?
• 30:08
Well, your chain is almost twice as long as it should be [laughs] or between the links. So let's talk about cassettes. Let's talk about chainrings. Let's get the, let's, yeah
• 30:20
I don't know if we can save any of that stuff yet. No, I just recycle that. It's gotta go. Yeah, that's gotta be recycled. Hey, so here's what we need to do.
• 30:26
We need to get you on the camo system so you can get a stainless ring, and so we can just mitigate some of the wear on the front end. Oh, there you go. And let's talk about what we can do on the back end.
• 30:37
A stainless steel drop stop chainring? Yeah. Nice. Yeah, yeah. That's what I'm talking about.
• 30:43
Um, it's, it's one of those things that's like, well, that's an ingenious idea, and especially the way it attaches is ingenious. It's like somebody was a bike mechanic at one point in their life. Yeah.
• 30:51
I mean, hands down. It's like, let's make a, a, a bolt on chainring that is actually serviceable without having to resort to a chain nut tool. Beautiful. So... I like it. I, I'm- It sounds good to me.
• 31:05
I'm, I'm a, I'm a fan. Whose is this? Uh, that's Wolf Tooth. Wolf Tooth, okay. Yeah. Their camo system. So they make it, uh, available in different spiders of course, because, well, different strokes, different folks.
• 31:17
You're riding SRAM or you're riding Race Face. Race, Race, Race Face. Easton. Um- I don't think I've built a... Well, we do S- we basically do SRAM or Race Face these days, but- Yeah...
• 31:26
that's only because I'm partial to them, and they're easily accessible. Right. At least they were through March of this year, and then everything- SRAM... everything went to hell. Yeah. [laughs] The hell I say.
• 31:39
All right. Well, John, thanks for joining us. You got any, uh, parting thoughts for the listening audience? [sighs] Ride safe. Mm. Ride fast. Mm-hmm. Take chances. Mm-hmm. Drive crazy. Take chances.
• 31:53
[laughs] Go sideways when possible. Yeah. Not, in, in nu- no particular order. [laughs] Uh, all right. Well, we did it again. Oops. [laughs] Oh. That was terrible. Oh, Jesus. Oh, God damn. Jesus Christ. End the show.
• 32:09
Never coming on this show again. End the show. You can't end that shit on a downer. That was terrible. You can't end it there. Oh. [laughs] Bloody hell.
• 32:30
  [upbeat music]
