• 0:07
Speaker 2: I skied yesterday. We did some spring skiing with all
• 0:10
Speaker 2: the kids and all the adults. We had such an
• 0:12
Speaker 2: epic day. It was so much fun. I skied into
• 0:15
Speaker 2: a tree, which I always do, but it was spring
• 0:18
Speaker 2: slushy skiing, so even as I was heading towards the tree,
• 0:21
Speaker 2: I thought this is going to be easy and to
• 0:23
Speaker 2: bounce right off. And then Ann Shauneker, who you may
• 0:26
Speaker 2: know from my book, was able to rescue me. As usual.
• 0:29
Speaker 2: She got my skis off and out of the tree.
• 0:31
Speaker 2: One was in like three feet of snow and behind
• 0:34
Speaker 2: the tree, so I have good pictures. And then we
• 0:38
Speaker 2: went to appray to a new place and then I
• 0:40
Speaker 2: got a massage. It was just like one of those
• 0:42
Speaker 2: perfect days. I was with like six of my girlfriends.
• 0:45
Speaker 2: And then tonight I'm doing my book. I'm doing a
• 0:47
Speaker 2: book event in Whistler at the theater here. Armchair Books
• 0:51
Speaker 2: is our local bookstore, so I wanted to support them
• 0:53
Speaker 2: and have a book event for I'll have what she's having.
• 0:56
Speaker 2: So I'm going to do that tonight and then I'm

• 1:05
Speaker 2: gotten your tickets. I start out in Rekuvic. I think
• 1:08

• 1:20
Speaker 2: very excited for my European tour.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: And we've got one of your buddies in the studio today.
• 1:25
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, this is one of my close friends who
• 1:28
Speaker 2: is a huge pain in my ass. Actually I'm a
• 1:31
Speaker 2: huge pain in her ass. And I take a lot
• 1:34
Speaker 2: of pride in that. She is the creator and host
• 1:37
Speaker 2: of the Motherhood on Hallmark, whose first two episodes are
• 1:39
Speaker 2: out now. She also starts in Overcompensating on Amazon Prime.
• 1:43
Speaker 2: All episodes are available May fifteenth, and you would recognize
• 1:47
Speaker 2: her from a lot of different shows like Friday Night Lights,
• 1:51
Speaker 2: like Dirty John, Like, I don't know, she's in everything,
• 1:55
Speaker 2: So please welcome Connie Britton.
• 1:58
Speaker 3: Hi, Connie, we got you muted right now? Okay, do
• 2:01
Speaker 3: you want me to unmute?
• 2:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, no, we want you to stay on mute. Connie,
• 2:05
Speaker 2: we want you to stay on mute for the interview.
• 2:11
Speaker 2: I have a little story to tell about Connie as
• 2:13
Speaker 2: we begin this episode of the podcast.
• 2:15
Speaker 3: Are we starting? Is this?
• 2:17
Speaker 2: Yeah? No, that bitch is on? Yeah, that's on. So
• 2:19
Speaker 2: we're promoting, you know, Connie Britton from a million television series.
• 2:25
Speaker 2: We'll go over that in your intro while you're not here,
• 2:27
Speaker 2: so that you don't have to listen to.
• 2:28
Speaker 3: That, and also you can say whatever you want. I know,
• 2:31
Speaker 3: I know what you're gonna say. I know how you
• 2:33
Speaker 3: feel about my television series.
• 2:35
Speaker 2: Do you I find it very funny whenever I watch
• 2:38
Speaker 2: Connie in anything, because it's I know her very well,
• 2:43
Speaker 2: and I go out of my way for Connie all
• 2:46
Speaker 2: the time. I constantly am showing up at things whenever
• 2:49
Speaker 2: she asked me to. I can't say the same for
• 2:51
Speaker 2: Connie with regard to me or my birthday, but I'm
• 2:55
Speaker 2: always doing things for her. But we did have a
• 2:58
Speaker 2: pretty funny do you want to talk about album? I
• 3:00
Speaker 2: think that's a pretty funny story to share.
• 3:02
Speaker 3: Oh, that is a pretty funny story to share. I
• 3:04
  Speaker 3: love that story.
• 3:05
Speaker 2: I want to tell you what happened. So Jane Fonda
• 3:08
Speaker 2: wanted us to campaign in Albuquerque before the election. The
• 3:12
Speaker 2: candidate that we campaigned for did not win the election.
• 3:15
Speaker 2: I want to be on record saying that she is
• 3:17
  Speaker 2: not the president.
• 3:20
Speaker 3: But so we did. We did that.
• 3:26
Speaker 2: What of when Jane Fonda asks you to do anything,
• 3:29
Speaker 2: you do it, especially with my history with Jane Fonda.
• 3:32
Speaker 2: Connie has her own history with Jane Fonda different from yours. Uh,
• 3:38
Speaker 2: actually no, because remember that time we went to go
• 3:40
Speaker 2: visit her when she had her hip, so she had
• 3:43
Speaker 2: some surgery, dined and we went to go visit her
• 3:45
Speaker 2: at her house and you revealed to her that your
• 3:47
Speaker 2: father said that she was Remember what did you say
• 3:50
  Speaker 2: to her?
• 3:50
Speaker 3: Oh, that's right. And I thought it was such a
• 3:53
Speaker 3: great story. And she looked at me like, oh, she's
• 3:55
Speaker 3: like my father, I said. I said, Basically, we were
• 3:59
Speaker 3: not allowed to say your name in our house growing
• 4:03
Speaker 3: up because my father worked in nuclear power and so
• 4:08
Speaker 3: it was like literally one name, one name that we
• 4:12
Speaker 3: could not say. We could not watch any movies that
• 4:15
Speaker 3: Jane Fonda was a part of. It was not to
• 4:18
Speaker 3: be spoken because I guess of the China syndrome or something,
• 4:23
Speaker 3: so like she was perceived as you know, this like
• 4:25
Speaker 3: anti nuclear person in my household. And now of course
• 4:32
Speaker 3: I idolize her. She is like the greatest icon. I
• 4:38
Speaker 3: can't believe that I get to call her my friend,
• 4:40
Speaker 3: like whatever. So I thought, great story, Like also, she
• 4:45
Speaker 3: just had hip surgery, she just got out of surgery,
• 4:51
Speaker 3: and she's just like drugs.
• 4:54
Speaker 2: Anyway, that was one highlight. But cut to this last
• 4:57
Speaker 2: year we were It was twenty twenty four. So last
• 4:59
Speaker 2: year we went to Albuquerque and Jane was like, okay,
• 5:04
Speaker 2: we both said we're in. We're like fun trip. Jane
• 5:08
Speaker 2: told us she was taking a Southwest flight and Kannie
• 5:12
Speaker 2: and I I was like, does that mean we have
• 5:14
Speaker 2: to take a Southwest flight?
• 5:15
Speaker 3: Can we meet you there?
• 5:17
Speaker 2: I was like, so can we just can we? Is there? Okay?
• 5:20
Speaker 2: So forget about the private plane. There isn't one. That's okay,
• 5:23
Speaker 2: no problem. It's a political event, so of course I'm
• 5:26
Speaker 2: not expecting that, but I don't know. I thought maybe
• 5:30
Speaker 2: something something else would happen then, other than Southwest, perhaps
• 5:34
Speaker 2: another airline. And then I say, okay, we're flying out
• 5:37
Speaker 2: of Burbank. I think I'm trying to find the picture. Yes, Burbank,
• 5:42
Speaker 2: do you have the picture to put up on I
• 5:44
Speaker 2: don't know how high tech you are. Probably we're not
• 5:46
Speaker 2: that high tech, but I do have the picture. I'll
• 5:49
Speaker 2: use it when I post this episode. Anyway, we took
• 5:51
Speaker 2: a picture of us. So we go to Burbank and
• 5:54
Speaker 2: Jane has an assistant with her. Kanye and I are
• 5:57
Speaker 2: are braving at the Burbank Airport, braving Southwest Airlines and
• 6:02
Speaker 2: we I'm like, how is this gonna work? And every
• 6:06
Speaker 2: single person I'm annoyed that I'm gonna have to deal with,
• 6:09
Speaker 2: you know like this. I'm like, We're just going to
• 6:12
Speaker 2: Southwest and Burbank and this is gonna be like a
• 6:15
Speaker 2: shit show. And every person that you can imagine, of course,
• 6:19
Speaker 2: is recognizing Jane Fonda. Nobody gives a shit that I'm there,
• 6:22
Speaker 2: which was a beautiful reprieve. But but everyone would come
• 6:27
Speaker 2: up to her and say can I get a picture
• 6:29
Speaker 2: with you? Can I get a picture with you? And
• 6:30
Speaker 2: then so I was there managing Jane Fonda. I'm like, well,
• 6:33
Speaker 2: you can't keep saying yes to every single person, will
• 6:35
Speaker 2: be here all day. But she had no no there
• 6:37
Speaker 2: was It's like it's when Jane Fonda. Imagine her walking
• 6:40
Speaker 2: through the terminal of Southwest and Burbank. I mean, obviously
• 6:44
Speaker 2: anyone who sees her is like, what the fuck is
• 6:46
Speaker 2: she doing there? Then we take the sideway.
• 6:49
Speaker 3: She is also like could care less, Like she doesn't
• 6:53
Speaker 3: give a shit about anything in real side seats of
• 6:56
Speaker 3: the wall. Yes to the Starbucks at Burbank Airport. That's
• 7:00
Speaker 3: where we're going to sit till our flight takes off.
• 7:02
Speaker 2: And then someone was like because she was sitting down,
• 7:04
Speaker 2: so people were crouching to get pictures with her, and
• 7:06
Speaker 2: then some guy asked her. He goes, would you mind
• 7:08
Speaker 2: standing up? And she was about to get up, and
• 7:10
Speaker 2: I was like, don't get up, Jane, like just let
• 7:12
Speaker 2: him take Why are you listening to him? And she's like,
• 7:14
Speaker 2: you're right, Why am I listen? I'm eighty years old? Yeah,
• 7:18
Speaker 2: she's eighty? Is she eighty?
• 7:19
Speaker 3: Is she eighty? Is she eighty two? Eighty she's older
• 7:23
Speaker 3: than eighty, right, Okay, yeah, I think she's eighty two.
• 7:26
  Speaker 3: She's unbelievable.
• 7:27
Speaker 1: The Internet says she's eighty seven.
• 7:30
Speaker 3: That's right, she's eighty seven. I knew she was like
• 7:32
Speaker 3: way older, but then I didn't want to say a
• 7:34
Speaker 3: fact like, it's so hard to believe that she's eighty seven.
• 7:37
Speaker 2: It is really hard to She's a vibrant So she's vibrant.
• 7:41
Speaker 2: She makes a hundred phone calls a day for her
• 7:42
Speaker 2: climate pack, which I just made a donation to this
• 7:44
Speaker 2: very morning. FYI, if you want to donate for climate change,
• 7:47
Speaker 2: which you should. Her pack works harder than anything I've
• 7:50
  Speaker 2: ever seen.
• 7:51
Speaker 3: Also, I'm speaking on a zoom for that oh later
• 7:53
Speaker 3: today actually, okay, see, see she keeps asking you to
• 7:56
Speaker 3: do things. I think she stopped asking me to do
• 7:58
Speaker 3: things after this trip Querqueachdather. So then we get to Albuquerque,
• 8:02
Speaker 3: we find out we're staying at the hotel the Hilton Yard.
• 8:06
Speaker 2: Was the airport, the airport Hilton, Airport Hilton, the Airport Hilton.
• 8:11
Speaker 2: Once again, Connie and I were texting on the side,
• 8:14
Speaker 2: going is this really gonna happen? Are we staying? And
• 8:17
Speaker 2: I'm like, God, I don't think we can move hotels
• 8:20
Speaker 2: if Jane is staying at the airport Hilton, like we
• 8:22
Speaker 2: have to. And I was only coming for Albuquerque. Connie
• 8:25
Speaker 2: went on to another city the next day.
• 8:27
Speaker 3: I stayed by the way, you like you kind of
• 8:29
Speaker 3: just like brushed off the rest of the Southwest trip
• 8:32
Speaker 3: like you me and Jane Fonda, like at least we
• 8:36
Speaker 3: completed the row of our Southwest like I of course
• 8:41
Speaker 3: had the middle seat, but yeah, like the three of
• 8:44
Speaker 3: us in the row is our Southwest flight.
• 8:48
Speaker 2: And then we get to Albuquerque. We go for lunch.
• 8:51
Speaker 2: First I order a frozen margarita obviously, and Jane's like, oh,
• 8:55
Speaker 2: I've never thought to have a frozen margarite in the daytime,
• 8:58
Speaker 2: so she Connie orders one Jane or what I think.
• 9:01
  Speaker 2: I ordered my second one, and Jane's like, I can't
• 9:03
Speaker 2: have two frozen margarita's and I was like, well I can.
• 9:06
Speaker 2: And then right before we were about to campaign, right,
• 9:09
Speaker 2: So then we go to one campaign event, which was
• 9:11
Speaker 2: great for all the people who are working in the campaign,
• 9:15
Speaker 2: and then we had some downtime. At that point, I
• 9:18
Speaker 2: think I pulled an edible out of my purse and
• 9:20
Speaker 2: was grabbing that and Jane goes, is that an edible, Chelsea?
• 9:23
Speaker 2: And I'm like, yeah, we're campaigning, like I have to
• 9:25
Speaker 2: remain alert. So then we went to the second event,
• 9:29
Speaker 2: which was great. You know, Jane, it's just so nice
• 9:33
Speaker 2: to see how people respond to her it's very inspiring.
• 9:37
Speaker 3: But also how amazing she is at speaking about this subject,
• 9:43
Speaker 3: like she is the most educated on it, Like she
• 9:48
Speaker 3: she just knows how to talk about it. Like if
• 9:50
Speaker 3: you want facts, you talk to Jane. It's like kind
• 9:53
Speaker 3: of incredible to listen to her too.
• 9:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, And she makes one hundred phone calls a day
• 9:57
Speaker 2: to raise money for that climate pack and is always protesting.
• 10:01
Speaker 2: She was doing fire drill Fridays for years while Biden
• 10:04
Speaker 2: was in the White House. And she's constantly going to
• 10:07
Speaker 2: places where they're going to drill and protesting. I mean,
• 10:09
Speaker 2: she's indefatigable. So she so then yeah, for you too.
• 10:15
Speaker 2: She although Connie went to Dartmouth, Oh I just in
• 10:18
Speaker 2: case you forgot, and Speakspanderin by the way, okay, and
• 10:21
Speaker 2: with roommates with Kirsten Chillibrand I don't think everyone knows that,
• 10:24
Speaker 2: so I'd like to get that out there. But then
• 10:27
Speaker 2: at the end of the night, so Connie sends me
• 10:29
Speaker 2: a link while we're on our way to Albuquerque, probably
• 10:31
Speaker 2: sitting in the Southwest seats, she sends me a link
• 10:34
Speaker 2: to a hotel that she found that's like thirty minutes
• 10:37
Speaker 2: outside of where we're supposed to stay at the airport hotel,
• 10:40
Speaker 2: and she's like, what about this?
• 10:42
Speaker 3: First, I was like, could we switch and stay at
• 10:45
  Speaker 3: this nice hotel?
• 10:47
Speaker 2: Well exactly, And I was like, I just don't think
• 10:49
Speaker 2: we can do that because we can't ditch Jane, Like
• 10:53
Speaker 2: we have to stay at the airport hotel.
• 10:54
Speaker 3: Too, right, And no, of course we couldn't ditch Jane.
• 10:58
Speaker 2: No, of course, and we did it. And so then
• 11:00
Speaker 2: after we were done early like nine, and Connie's like, well,
• 11:03
Speaker 2: let's just at least go get a drink at this
• 11:04
Speaker 2: hotel that she found that was like thirty minutes out
• 11:07
Speaker 2: of the way. So we're driving and at this point
• 11:09
Speaker 2: we've picked up a couple of other people, some of
• 11:11
Speaker 2: Jane's Climate pac people. They're in the car with us,
• 11:14
Speaker 2: and then there was a couple of people meeting us there.
• 11:16
Speaker 2: And so we get to this really cool place, this
• 11:18
Speaker 2: like hotel outside or I think in Albuquerque, but outside
• 11:21
Speaker 2: off the beaten drack, and Jane's like, it's really far.
• 11:24
Speaker 2: I'm really tired. How long is this going to take?
• 11:26
Speaker 2: We were in the car longer than we expected. It
• 11:29
Speaker 2: was about a thirty minute drive, and Jane is kind
• 11:31
Speaker 2: of getting a little antsy, like, oh God, is this
• 11:33
  Speaker 2: worth it?
• 11:33
Speaker 3: It's not on the schedule at all. The Hilton Airport
• 11:38
Speaker 3: was the next and.
• 11:39
Speaker 2: Final stop, and Connie and I were like, Jane, you
• 11:42
Speaker 2: can go to bed like Connie and I'll just go
• 11:44
  Speaker 2: it's no big deal. And she's like, m I'll come
• 11:46
Speaker 2: with you. I'll come with you. So we get there.
• 11:48
Speaker 2: It's like a thirty minute drive. We get there, we see,
• 11:51
Speaker 2: you know, we're kind of like worried, like I don't
• 11:53
Speaker 2: want to We don't want to annoy her. I don't
• 11:55
Speaker 2: want to annoy her. I don't want to keep her
• 11:57
Speaker 2: out later than she wants to be out. I don't
• 11:58
Speaker 2: want to be responsible for her drink thinking or anything
• 12:01
Speaker 2: you know that's related to me. I get in trouble
• 12:03
Speaker 2: for everyone's bad behavior, you know. So I so then
• 12:07
Speaker 2: we have drinks. It ends up being a lovely night.
• 12:10
Speaker 2: We order some snacks. I think we had a couple
• 12:12
Speaker 2: of drinks. There was like six or seven of us
• 12:14
Speaker 2: by this time, and as we're walking out the door,
• 12:17
Speaker 2: Jane says, Oh, I'm actually so glad we came here.
• 12:21
Speaker 2: Thank you, Chelsea for picking this place out, and I've
• 12:27
  Speaker 2: got You're welcome.
• 12:28
Speaker 3: All the time, like I'm getting blamed as she's getting
• 12:32
Speaker 3: more and more tired, more and more stressed, like why
• 12:36
Speaker 3: are we going to this place?
• 12:38
Speaker 2: And then she then I get credited with with the win, and.
• 12:42
Speaker 3: I, by the way, you take off the next morning,
• 12:45
Speaker 3: and I go, I go on to the next the next.
• 12:48
Speaker 2: Yea, where did you guys go from there?
• 12:50
Speaker 3: Well? Wait, that was Albuquerque. So then we went to
• 12:54
Speaker 3: San Sancho Pez. No, wait, San Jose, San Antonio, Mexico,
• 13:02
Speaker 3: New Mexico, New Mexico, the big town in Mexico. The police.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: No, okay, let's start, let's start, okay, okay, she's from Dartmouth.
• 13:13
Speaker 2: Every once she went to Dartmouth, just so you know.
• 13:15
Speaker 2: And she speaks Mandarin, but she doesn't know where San Antoni.
• 13:18
Speaker 3: Thank you, you know what. You should have been able
• 13:21
Speaker 3: to think of that too, Santa Fe, Thank you, Catherine.
• 13:26
  Speaker 1: No problem.
• 13:28
Speaker 2: Okay, So back to Connie. When I see Connie on television,
• 13:32
Speaker 2: I sent her a screen grab when I saw her
• 13:35
Speaker 2: playing Dirty John with the woman that got duped by
• 13:39
Speaker 2: this lunatic loser. He wasn't even that much of a lunatic.
• 13:43
Speaker 2: That's how kind of slow on the uptake this woman was.
• 13:45
Speaker 3: He was too a lunatic.
• 13:48
  Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I guess so, I.
• 13:49
Speaker 3: Mean compared to the guys you date, But yes, he
• 13:52
  Speaker 3: was a luminis.
• 13:55
Speaker 2: I take screen grabs of Connie's faces and I just
• 13:58
Speaker 2: send them to her, like, how can anyone take your
• 14:01
  Speaker 2: acting seriously?
• 14:03
  Speaker 3: You know?
• 14:03
Speaker 2: And I forget what was the last? You're in everything,
• 14:06
Speaker 2: So it's impossible to avoid Connie Britton. You guys, if
• 14:08
Speaker 2: you're watching, you've seen her in everything. In fact, I
• 14:11
Speaker 2: started watching that new series on Netflix, and you were
• 14:13
Speaker 2: in it, and I was so excited, and then and
• 14:15
Speaker 2: then you die in it, but then you come back
• 14:19
Speaker 2: and the mashbacks. I forget what that? No, that was
• 14:22
  Speaker 2: a series.
• 14:24
Speaker 3: No, the Life List? A Life List is a movie.
• 14:27
Speaker 2: Oh I thought it was a series. Okay, So then
• 14:29
Speaker 2: I did watch it. I thought I only watched the
• 14:30
  Speaker 2: first episode.
• 14:32
Speaker 3: That was the whole. That was the whole. It's because
• 14:35
  Speaker 3: it's a movie.
• 14:38
Speaker 1: Technically you did watch the first episode.
• 14:40
Speaker 2: Okay. But now Connie has a new series. It's called
• 14:43
Speaker 2: The Motherhood, and she's been talking about this for about
• 14:46
Speaker 2: two years because she is she's adopted a son. About
• 14:49
Speaker 2: how many years ago did you adopt your son? Fourteen
• 14:53
Speaker 2: fourteen years ago. Okay, so pretty recent. So she adopted
• 14:56
Speaker 2: her son. She adopted her son fourteen years ago as
• 14:59
Speaker 2: a single and she is very passionate, and it has
• 15:03
Speaker 2: always been very passionate. I can attest to this, to
• 15:06
Speaker 2: the plight of single mothers and to the plight of
• 15:09
Speaker 2: what it takes for a mother to raise a child,
• 15:12
Speaker 2: not only in this world just as a job. It
• 15:15
Speaker 2: is a job, a full time job, one that I
• 15:17
Speaker 2: have chosen not to participate in. So talk to us
• 15:20
Speaker 2: about your series, Connie, because.
• 15:22
Speaker 3: By the way, you've been hearing me talk about this
• 15:24
Speaker 3: for longer than two years, because I've been working on
• 15:27
Speaker 3: this for so long, because I saw the whole idea
• 15:30
Speaker 3: came to me while I was in Nashville, because basically
• 15:33
Speaker 3: I adopted Yobi and then immediately moved to Nashville to
• 15:37
Speaker 3: do the show Nashville, and I was like a brand
• 15:42
Speaker 3: new mother. I had no support system. I didn't know
• 15:46
Speaker 3: anybody in Nashville. I started working eighteen hour days, was
• 15:49
Speaker 3: so crazy, and I had this new baby. I'm like,
• 15:53
Speaker 3: what do I do with it? Like, I don't know,
• 15:55
Speaker 3: I don't know how, And it was quite traumatizing and
• 15:59
Speaker 3: so so anyway, I figured it out. I started. I
• 16:03
Speaker 3: created like an amazing support system there, like was they people.
• 16:07
Speaker 2: How did you figure it out?
• 16:08
Speaker 3: Though it took a long time. And by the way,
• 16:11
Speaker 3: I don't I don't mean to say that, like, oh yeah,
• 16:13
Speaker 3: so I figured it out because I figured no. But
• 16:15
Speaker 3: what the main thing that saved my life basically was
• 16:20
Speaker 3: that I slowly started to create a community. And that
• 16:26
Speaker 3: started actually with I think you've met these guys with me,
• 16:29
Speaker 3: Like Nathan Followell he's the drummer in the Kings of
• 16:31
Speaker 3: Leon and his wife Jesse Balen were the only people
• 16:34
Speaker 3: in Nashville that I knew, and they had I'd met
• 16:37
Speaker 3: them because they had come to the set of Friday
• 16:38
Speaker 3: Night Lights. Nathan had brought Jesse as like a surprise
• 16:42
Speaker 3: to visit the set of Friday Night Lights and we
• 16:45
Speaker 3: had had like some crazy night with them, and so
• 16:48
Speaker 3: I remembered, I'm like, wait, I think those guys live
• 16:50
Speaker 3: in Nashville. So I called them up and so because
• 16:54
Speaker 3: thanks to them, like I started like I had like
• 16:56
Speaker 3: a little bit like of it was like somebody to
• 16:59
Speaker 3: hold on to you. And then they kind of introduced
• 17:01
Speaker 3: me to their community and then crazy, I think, you
• 17:04
Speaker 3: know this story. But after one year on the show,
• 17:07
Speaker 3: the house next door to theirs went on the market
• 17:10
Speaker 3: and I bought it, so I was able to live
• 17:14
Speaker 3: next door to them, which also and then they had kids,
• 17:16
Speaker 3: and so Yobi and their kids like we're kind of
• 17:18
Speaker 3: growing up together and anyway, but what I realized is
• 17:21
Speaker 3: it's all about community. And also in Nashville, I had
• 17:24
Speaker 3: another friend who was working on the show in costumes.
• 17:28
Speaker 3: She was a single mom of four kids, and she
• 17:32
Speaker 3: was working these crazy eighteen hour days without a break,
• 17:35
Speaker 3: and she didn't have Like, at least I could afford
• 17:39
Speaker 3: a nanny, which I needed. I would not have been
• 17:42
Speaker 3: able to do it without that. But I recognize, like
• 17:46
Speaker 3: so many single moms don't have the resources that I have,
• 17:49
Speaker 3: and you still have to do it. And so they're
• 17:52
Speaker 3: out working three jobs at a time or all these
• 17:54
Speaker 3: long hours. And one day she calls me and she's like,
• 17:56
Speaker 3: I forgot to give Jed lunch money, and I'm I
• 17:59
Speaker 3: happen to be off that day, so I swing by
• 18:01
Speaker 3: the local middle school and drop off, like Rayna James,
• 18:05
Speaker 3: who's the character that I'm playing in Nashville, like just
• 18:07
Speaker 3: drops off like five dollars in the front office for
• 18:10
Speaker 3: like her kid Jed, and like at that moment, I
• 18:13
Speaker 3: was like, I wish I'd love to start an organization
• 18:16
Speaker 3: or something where single moms could just get you could
• 18:21
Speaker 3: volunteer to like go grocery shopping or just hang out
• 18:26
Speaker 3: with the kids for two hours, just to like give
• 18:28
Speaker 3: single moms a break, you know what I mean. Anyway,
• 18:31
Speaker 3: So that's kind of where it all started, the whole
• 18:33
Speaker 3: idea of it, and it kind of emerged into I
• 18:37
Speaker 3: got together with these guys at Scout who created Queer Eye,
• 18:41
Speaker 3: and they love the idea because nobody's also really done
• 18:46
Speaker 3: anything like this sort of talking about single moms, which
• 18:49
Speaker 3: I think is another issue because there are so many
• 18:52
Speaker 3: single moms in the world, not just the United States,
• 18:54
Speaker 3: but in the world. Anybody that you talk to, if
• 18:57
  Speaker 3: they're not a single mom or weren't raised by a
• 18:59
Speaker 3: single mom, they have somebody in their life who they
• 19:03
Speaker 3: know and they're close to that's a single parent. And
• 19:07
Speaker 3: so it's like as a culture, we don't really we
• 19:11
Speaker 3: kind of just push single parents away, like that's not
• 19:15
Speaker 3: a thing, and there's no support for you know, certainly
• 19:19
Speaker 3: I mean at this point, but like there's no governmental
• 19:22
Speaker 3: like any kind of anything in place in terms of
• 19:25
Speaker 3: giving support to single parents, and I just was like,
• 19:29
Speaker 3: I want to change the narrative about that and like
• 19:33
Speaker 3: create respect for these people who are doing this heroic
• 19:36
Speaker 3: thing which is being single parents and doing it by themselves,
• 19:42
Speaker 3: and also help to create a community for single parents
• 19:46
Speaker 3: so that they can not feel alone in it. Because
• 19:48
Speaker 3: I also what I found like shooting the show is
• 19:50
Speaker 3: it's one of the big things is it's so hard,
• 19:54
Speaker 3: especially for women, to ask for help, and so they
• 19:57
Speaker 3: think that they're supposed to do it all by themselves
• 20:00
Speaker 3: and it's so isolating and challenging and kind of impossible,
• 20:05
Speaker 3: like you can't do it by yourself. And so the
• 20:08
Speaker 3: whole point of the show is like create community.
• 20:12
Speaker 2: And well, first you gather a bunch of single mothers
• 20:14
Speaker 2: who are also you know, who are going through it, right,
• 20:17
Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, take us through it.
• 20:19
Speaker 3: Oh well, so on the show itself, like we yes,
• 20:22
Speaker 3: we basically there are six episodes. Each episode, we have
• 20:25
Speaker 3: a single mom who you know, of course, every person
• 20:29
Speaker 3: has their own set of circumstances, and we have three
• 20:33
Speaker 3: women who are our experts and I call them the
• 20:36
Speaker 3: neighbor Ladies, named after the women that when I was
• 20:40
Speaker 3: growing up, Like I grew up in Virginia on a
• 20:42
Speaker 3: cul de sac, and like every day at five o'clock,
• 20:45
Speaker 3: the neighbor ladies from around the cold de sac would
• 20:48
Speaker 3: come over to my mom to our house, and like
• 20:51
Speaker 3: they'd all have like their glass of wine or their
• 20:53
Speaker 3: cocktail and like have like whatever cheese and crackers and
• 20:58
Speaker 3: just like talk about their days and like that was
• 20:59
Speaker 3: their support system. And so I grew up watching that,
• 21:03
Speaker 3: and that made me realize, like, oh, like my mother
• 21:06
Speaker 3: is even my mother wasn't even a single mom. But
• 21:08
Speaker 3: I'm like, you can't do this, but like they rely
• 21:10
Speaker 3: on each other to get through the day raising their kids.
• 21:15
Speaker 3: And so anyway, so we called the three mom experts
• 21:19
Speaker 3: on the show the neighbor Ladies. One of them is
• 21:22
Speaker 3: sort of a style but it's kind of a self
• 21:25
Speaker 3: love style person, and then one is a parenting coach,
• 21:29
Speaker 3: and then one is a DIY home renovation person. They're
• 21:34
Speaker 3: all amazing, all three of them. And so each week
• 21:37
Speaker 3: we have a new single mom and then our three
• 21:40
Speaker 3: neighbor ladies will kind of go in and create magic
• 21:44
Speaker 3: for them and help them, help to guide them so
• 21:46
Speaker 3: that they can have sustainable things that can help them
• 21:50
Speaker 3: as they continue to raise their child and do their
• 21:53
Speaker 3: jobs and do all the things that they're doing in
• 21:55
Speaker 3: the world. And then ultimately we're creating a community with
• 21:58
  Speaker 3: all of these.
• 21:58
  Speaker 2: Moms and that's a yes, a very beautiful thing. What's
• 22:03
Speaker 2: your friend's name again? The woman who Yobi's best friend.
• 22:06
Speaker 2: They don't go to the same school, but Jimmy Tammy. Yeah,
• 22:10
Speaker 2: I would like to know who her community is, who
• 22:12
Speaker 2: her neighborhood ladies are.
• 22:15
Speaker 3: Well, you know, that's a really interesting point because, first
• 22:18
Speaker 3: of all, I'm hoping because next but we're already start
• 22:23
Speaker 3: starting to talk about season two of the show.
• 22:25
Speaker 2: It's on Hallmark. Everybody, you can watch The Motherhood on Hallmark,
• 22:28
Speaker 2: and the first two episodes are out now.
• 22:31
Speaker 3: But we shot the first season in Kansas City, which
• 22:35
Speaker 3: was awesome. By the way, have you ever been to
• 22:36
  Speaker 3: Kansas City?
• 22:37
Speaker 2: Of course, I've been in Kansas City. I'm a comedian.
• 22:39
Speaker 2: I go to all the cities that you never want
• 22:41
Speaker 2: to ever see the inside of, not the Kansas City
• 22:43
Speaker 2: is one of them.
• 22:43
Speaker 3: I really liked Kansas City.
• 22:45
Speaker 2: Kansas City is cool. That whole area that midwestern Kansas
• 22:48
Speaker 2: City is very cool.
• 22:49
Speaker 3: Yes, I really liked it a lot, and we had
• 22:52
Speaker 3: a beautiful time there. But next season, because I live
• 22:55
Speaker 3: in LA you be starting high school next year, so
• 22:58
Speaker 3: I'm like, it would be so much better. Or if
• 23:00
Speaker 3: we shot I'd be able to be in the show
• 23:02
Speaker 3: more if we shut shoot in LA. So we're looking
• 23:04
Speaker 3: at that, and if we do, then Tammy will be
• 23:07
Speaker 3: one of the moms next year. Oh yeah, I'm I'm like,
• 23:11
Speaker 3: because she's definitely one of the people that also kind
• 23:13
Speaker 3: of inspired this, you know, totally right, and so I
• 23:17
Speaker 3: know it'd be so amazing, I know.
• 23:19
Speaker 2: And I'm always inviting Tammy to come to one of
• 23:21
Speaker 2: my Vegas shows and she's like, girl, you don't understand
• 23:23
Speaker 2: what I would do to make that happen. She's like,
• 23:26
Speaker 2: I want to come to Vegas. She's like, do you
• 23:28
Speaker 2: understand I can never leave my child for one night
• 23:31
Speaker 2: unless I have a like a fool proof plan for
• 23:34
Speaker 2: him to spend the night.
• 23:37
Speaker 3: And I'm just like with her mother, who like her mother.
• 23:40
Speaker 2: The last time I flew somewhere to meet Connie was
• 23:42
Speaker 2: for her. I went early to south By Southwest for
• 23:45
Speaker 2: her birthday. We went, we had a nice dinner. I
• 23:48
Speaker 2: don't know what was in the water, on the plane
• 23:51
Speaker 2: ride I got, I took there, but something was in it.
• 23:53
Speaker 2: It was this this guy had this brand deal, this brand.
• 23:56
Speaker 2: It's called love Water, and they said it was just water,
• 23:59
Speaker 2: but I'm convinced there was something else in there. And
• 24:02
Speaker 2: when I got to that dinner, I was ready to
• 24:04
Speaker 2: go and guess what's hot?
• 24:06
Speaker 3: I was hot, hot, coming in hot.
• 24:08
Speaker 2: I came in hot. And that night ended it around
• 24:12
Speaker 2: two thirty in the morning. And the next morning I
• 24:16
Speaker 2: had panels at south By Southwest, not one, not two,
• 24:19
Speaker 2: five separate panels that started at nine thirty am, and
• 24:24
Speaker 2: I got in at three thirty am, so I looked
• 24:27
Speaker 2: like somebody punched me in the face. I didn't recover
• 24:29
Speaker 2: from that night for two days.
• 24:31
Speaker 3: Because of the water. Weird the weird waters.
• 24:33
Speaker 2: No, because of everything that happened. After the water we
• 24:36
Speaker 2: drank and then we went back to her friends house
• 24:39
Speaker 2: and the people were smoking cigarettes. It just got It
• 24:41
Speaker 2: was just one of those It was first of all,
• 24:44
Speaker 2: I don't regret it for a second because it was
• 24:45
Speaker 2: a really fucking fun night and I'm glad that I
• 24:48
  Speaker 2: was there.
• 24:48
Speaker 3: But uh, of course, Austin.
• 24:51
Speaker 2: But it took me a couple days to really get
• 24:53
Speaker 2: my head back on straight after the after the first
• 24:56
Speaker 2: day of five panels, because there were so many fun
• 24:57
Speaker 2: things going on at south By Southwest. My assistant was
• 25:00
Speaker 2: there and he's like, Okay, so do you want to
• 25:01
Speaker 2: go to this dinner with this person? And this person's
• 25:03
Speaker 2: I go dinner? Are you fucking kidding me? I have
• 25:06
Speaker 2: to go to bed at five pm today because of
• 25:08
Speaker 2: last night, as if it was somehow his fault.
• 25:11
Speaker 3: Your assistant is so sweet.
• 25:13
  Speaker 2: I know, I know.
• 25:15
Speaker 3: Wait, remind me his name again, McKinley.
• 25:22
  Speaker 2: That's a private joke.
• 25:24
Speaker 3: That is a private joke, and we know that it's
• 25:26
  Speaker 3: not McKinley.
• 25:28
Speaker 2: Okay, anyway, Okay, we're gonna take a break and we're
• 25:31
Speaker 2: going to be right back with Connie Britton, the world's
• 25:33
  Speaker 2: best actress.

• 25:52
Speaker 1: Dear Chelsea Podcast at gmail dot com.
• 25:58
Speaker 2: We're rack with Connie Britton. Hey, Connie, I have an
• 26:00
Speaker 2: acting question for you. Do you ever have a have
• 26:02
Speaker 2: you ever had? Because you've been in everything? I mean,
• 26:05
Speaker 2: just to name a few, as you named, you were
• 26:07
Speaker 2: in Friday Night Lights, you were in Nashville, you were
• 26:11
  Speaker 2: in White Lotus.
• 26:13
Speaker 3: Your favorite dirty John, Dirty John.
• 26:15
Speaker 2: Yes, that's just to name a few. Her resume is endless.
• 26:19
Speaker 2: Do you ever have a crisis of confidence when you're
• 26:21
Speaker 2: acting or have you had one about your performance? I,
• 26:28
Speaker 2: of course I always have a crisis of confidence, Like,
• 26:31
Speaker 2: isn't that part of being an artiste? I guess so,
• 26:34
Speaker 2: I just feel like you always feel. I mean, I've
• 26:37
Speaker 2: never seen that side of you. Even though I joke
• 26:40
Speaker 2: about you being bad at acting, I know you're not,
• 26:43
Speaker 2: and I know you're very talented. And I wonder if
• 26:45
Speaker 2: someone who says established and as experienced, like the hours
• 26:49
Speaker 2: of experience that you have accrued.
• 26:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, that erose is legit. That ten thousand hours thing.
• 26:57
Speaker 3: One of the things that I've noticed in my fifties.
• 26:59
Speaker 3: It's a maaze, is that ten thousand hours thing. Like
• 27:05
Speaker 3: I feel much more like I can access whatever that
• 27:11
Speaker 3: thing is that I need to be able to do
• 27:14
  Speaker 3: a scene and create a character. It's it's like I
• 27:18
Speaker 3: have much more immediate connection to that, Whereas when I
• 27:22
Speaker 3: was younger, I think I would, you know, I kind
• 27:24
Speaker 3: of have to really like it was more cerebral and
• 27:27
Speaker 3: I'd have to really like dig down and that kind
• 27:29
Speaker 3: of thing. And now I think that, you know, it's
• 27:32
Speaker 3: the after ten thousand hours, it becomes a little bit
• 27:34
Speaker 3: more immediate and so that, but that doesn't titt necessarily
• 27:38
Speaker 3: take away from every time I start a character. It's funny.
• 27:43
Speaker 3: I actually literally this just this last week finished shooting.
• 27:48
Speaker 3: We're doing a sequel to The Brothers McMullen. All the
• 27:52
Speaker 3: Family McMullen. The Brothers McMullen was my big break movie
• 27:56
Speaker 3: that happened in nineteen ninety five, and that movie is
• 28:01
Speaker 3: like like it takes place on Long Island and it's
• 28:04
Speaker 3: like pretty thick like Long Island accent, and you know,
• 28:07
Speaker 3: I did the part thirty years ago. So it's always
• 28:10
  Speaker 3: a thing like, oh, what is I don't I guess
• 28:14
Speaker 3: I know what this character is. I don't know. But
• 28:16
Speaker 3: every time I first step foot on set and the
• 28:18
Speaker 3: camera starts to roll, I'm kind of like, what am
• 28:22
Speaker 3: I going to sound like as this character. I don't know,
• 28:24
Speaker 3: it's super nerve wracking, like it's access.
• 28:27
  Speaker 2: They're probably intimidating, I could.
• 28:28
Speaker 3: Imagine, but it's also just even a leap of faith,
• 28:31
Speaker 3: even if it's not with an accent. It's just kind
• 28:33
Speaker 3: of like, I don't really know, I'm just figuring it
• 28:37
Speaker 3: out as I go, kind of thing. You have to
• 28:39
Speaker 3: jump off a cliff a little bit every time.
• 28:41
Speaker 2: How is it meeting Robert de Niro on set? I mean,
• 28:44
Speaker 2: I'm sure you've met him before, butting your.
• 28:48
Speaker 3: Your lover, your passion and your pat your lover, passion,
• 28:52
Speaker 3: Robert Tiro, my baby daddy, your baby daddy. It was amazing,
• 28:57
Speaker 3: Are you kidding? It was like the I mean, he's
• 29:01
  Speaker 3: just he's so nice. He's a really nice guy. He's
• 29:05
Speaker 3: got such an incredible work ethic, also a guy in
• 29:08
Speaker 3: his eighties, and he just works his ass off and
• 29:13
Speaker 3: so and he's just kind of a normal guy. And
• 29:15
Speaker 3: he would just talk to me like, how are you
• 29:17
Speaker 3: learning all these lines? You know? These lines? Are you
• 29:19
Speaker 3: know what I mean? And it was interesting for me
• 29:22
Speaker 3: because it was a little bit like it was his
• 29:24
Speaker 3: first time doing television, which you know, I've been doing
• 29:26
Speaker 3: for a long time, and so it was almost like
• 29:30
Speaker 3: he was kind of looking to me like, oh, yeah,
• 29:32
Speaker 3: how do you do this kind of thing? I'm like,
• 29:33
  Speaker 3: who me?
• 29:34
  Speaker 2: What's so demirror?
• 29:37
Speaker 3: But yeah he I. It was very exciting meeting to Nero.
• 29:41
Speaker 2: Okay, so we're gonna move to Callers, Connie, try and
• 29:43
Speaker 2: give some advice we need. Okay, put on your.
• 29:46
Speaker 3: Stage callers collar. We have people.
• 29:49
Speaker 2: It's called Dear Chelsea. It's like dear Abby, but with me.
• 29:52
Speaker 1: Oh god, guys. So our first question comes from Laura.
• 29:58
Speaker 1: She says, Dear Chelsea, I'd love some advice on this.
• 30:01
Speaker 1: One of my best friends since high school is thirty
• 30:03
Speaker 1: nine and so ready to meet someone and start a family.
• 30:06
Speaker 1: She's beautiful, a doctor, she even designed and built her
• 30:09
Speaker 1: own house. All she needs is to meet a decent
• 30:11
Speaker 1: man and she's ready to go. She wants a family
• 30:13
Speaker 1: so bad. She's also frozen her eggs, so she has
• 30:15
Speaker 1: a backup plan, but she really doesn't want to resort
• 30:18
Speaker 1: to it. She feels the clock is sticking. I don't
• 30:20
Speaker 1: understand why she can't find someone. She's such a catch.
• 30:23
Speaker 1: She's kind, she's active, She's keys a lot in Canada too,
• 30:27
Speaker 1: She's been on the apps for literally years, and men
• 30:29
Speaker 1: are either intimidated by her or they're quote just not
• 30:32
Speaker 1: ready to think about a family. I constantly put it
• 30:34
Speaker 1: out to people I know, to oh, hey, if you
• 30:36
Speaker 1: know any single guys, and it's just not working. To
• 30:39
Speaker 1: throw a bit of a wrench in her search. She
• 30:41
Speaker 1: met a guy online a year ago who lives across
• 30:43
Speaker 1: the country who she keeps holding out hope for. He's
• 30:45
Speaker 1: the same cultural background as her, which I feel she
• 30:48
Speaker 1: sees as an added fairytale esque bonus, but he keeps
• 30:51
Speaker 1: disappointing her, not making an effort in communication or plans
• 30:54
Speaker 1: to see her unless it conveniently just happens, example, randomly
• 30:59
Speaker 1: being in the same city in Europe one day and
• 31:01
Speaker 1: meeting up. She's been very straight up with him about
• 31:03
Speaker 1: what she wants, and it's frustrating that he keeps stringing
• 31:05
Speaker 1: her along but not committing.
• 31:07
  Speaker 2: I tell her I.
• 31:08
Speaker 1: Was just a sign of the times and it's not her.
• 31:10
Speaker 1: I also tell her what an inspiration she is, especially
• 31:13
Speaker 1: if she does decide to be a mother alone. And
• 31:14
Speaker 1: I'm wondering how I can support her. I need Chelsea's wisdom.
• 31:17
Speaker 2: Laura. First of all, Hi Laura. This is our special
• 31:21
Speaker 2: guest Connie Britton today.
• 31:22
Speaker 3: You're Laura, like Laura from the letter.
• 31:27
Speaker 2: Well, she's Laura from the letter, but she's talking about
• 31:30
Speaker 2: her friend in the letter.
• 31:33
Speaker 3: Is it your friend, Laura my friend? No? Really, it
• 31:39
  Speaker 3: really is.
• 31:39
Speaker 1: When I talk to Laura, she had like babies and test.
• 31:45
  Speaker 2: A detective show.
• 31:46
  Speaker 3: Okay, this is.
• 31:49
Speaker 2: Honestly, I'm sorry about her. I'm sorry anyway.
• 31:54
Speaker 3: Let's just be real.
• 31:55
Speaker 2: I think you should encourage your friend to go ahead
• 31:58
Speaker 2: and not be holding out for any fucking man to
• 32:01
Speaker 2: have her babies. If she is passionate about becoming a mother,
• 32:04
Speaker 2: and she has her eggs frozen, and she has her
• 32:06
Speaker 2: shit together and her life together, fucking go for it.
• 32:09
Speaker 2: She could be waiting another ten years before she finds
• 32:11
Speaker 2: the right guy. Connie didn't meet her right guy until
• 32:14
Speaker 2: you were what fifty Connie, have you guys been together?
• 32:17
Speaker 3: Yeah? No, fifty two, fifty fifty two, fifty two. I
• 32:21
Speaker 3: can actually speak to this too, Laura, even though I
• 32:25
Speaker 3: thought maybe you were the friend, uh I, because frankly,
• 32:30
Speaker 3: this was I adopted my son as a single mom
• 32:33
Speaker 3: because I kept thinking, Oh, I'm gonna meet the guy.
• 32:35
Speaker 3: I'm gonna meet the guy. I'm gonna meet the guy. Yeah,
• 32:37
Speaker 3: And I knew I wanted to adopt, just as your
• 32:39
Speaker 3: friend knows that she wants to have babies and she
• 32:41
Speaker 3: throws her eggs and so I finally was like, what
• 32:44
Speaker 3: am I waiting for? And I did it, And I'm
• 32:46
Speaker 3: just so glad that I did. I will say, how old.
• 32:50
Speaker 2: Were you, Connie when you did it? You did it
• 32:51
  Speaker 2: fourteen years ago?
• 32:53
  Speaker 3: Four?
• 32:54
  Speaker 2: Okay?
• 32:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, great, so encouraging. Yeah. So, but I will say,
• 32:59
Speaker 3: you know, and she can watch my show that's coming
• 33:02
Speaker 3: out on Monday, The Motherhood, because it's all about single
• 33:04
Speaker 3: mom So it's helpful because the thing is you you
• 33:08
Speaker 3: kind of need to know what you're in for when
• 33:10
Speaker 3: you are going to be a single mom. But honestly,
• 33:14
Speaker 3: it's so amazing if she, if she chooses to do that.
• 33:19
Speaker 3: It's so amazing to be able to do that and
• 33:24
Speaker 3: not feel like because otherwise it's it screws up your
• 33:28
Speaker 3: thinking if you're sort of at the mercy of the
• 33:30
Speaker 3: idea of like, I want to meet a guy so
• 33:32
  Speaker 3: I can have a baby.
• 33:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm saying, yeah, totally yeah, And I've actually
• 33:37
Speaker 4: just become a single mom too, So I'm I'm really
• 33:41
  Speaker 4: trying to did.
• 33:42
Speaker 2: You kill yourselsband? But yeah, I have.
• 33:46
  Speaker 3: It's a personal question, Chelsea.
• 33:49
Speaker 4: I have two kids, so I'm trying to really show
• 33:51
Speaker 4: her that, you know, it's awesome alone.
• 33:55
Speaker 3: So yeah, thank you so much.
• 33:56
Speaker 2: You guys live near each other, you and your friend.
• 33:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, we love We're going to Sana tonight, so okay,
• 34:02
Speaker 4: ten minutes from each other.
• 34:03
  Speaker 2: That's great.
• 34:04
Speaker 3: You're each other's community. You're each other because.
• 34:06
Speaker 2: That's what we're talking about. Connie's news show is all
• 34:08
Speaker 2: about this. It's not a hallmark and it's called motherhood,
• 34:11
Speaker 2: and it's all about this. It's about, actually, for me,
• 34:14
Speaker 2: a community with your friends who also are single parents,
• 34:17
Speaker 2: so that you guys can help each other parent together,
• 34:20
Speaker 2: you know, and be there for when the other person
• 34:22
Speaker 2: isn't and having your kids spend time together like this
• 34:25
Speaker 2: is exactly what we're talking about. So please don't ever
• 34:27
Speaker 2: put anything on holds in the hopes that you're going
• 34:29
Speaker 2: to meet the right guy. You never know when that
• 34:31
  Speaker 2: person is coming.
• 34:32
Speaker 3: Awesome, I love it.
• 34:33
Speaker 2: Thank you, Okay, great, thanks for calling. Thank you so much.
• 34:37
Speaker 2: By Laura. Bye, It's Laura.
• 34:39
Speaker 3: What a perfect question.
• 34:40
Speaker 1: Wow, that was really quick yeah, we might even make
• 34:43
Speaker 1: it to four questions.
• 34:44
  Speaker 3: We'll see.
• 34:45
Speaker 1: So our next color is Stephanie, she says, Dear Chelsea,
• 34:49
Speaker 1: I'm a high school teacher at a school in an
• 34:51
Speaker 1: underprivileged area in Connecticut. Yes, they exist here. We're situated
• 34:55
Speaker 1: around the richest towns in the state. I worked in
• 34:57
Speaker 1: my school for my entire career eleven years. I just
• 35:00
Speaker 1: finished my last ever degree, which will allow me to
• 35:02
Speaker 1: be a school administrator. My dilemma right now is between
• 35:06
Speaker 1: loving my job and wanting to be financially stable. My
• 35:09
Speaker 1: job is literally my calling. I love my students, I
• 35:12
Speaker 1: love my coworkers, and most days I truly just love
• 35:15
Speaker 1: going to work and doing this job despite everything. However,
• 35:18
Speaker 1: we're paid like garbage after school hours. I nanny for
• 35:21
Speaker 1: a family and tutor the other days of the week
• 35:23
Speaker 1: for more income, plus say nanny part time in the
• 35:25
Speaker 1: summer when I'm off work. With my new degree, I
• 35:27
Speaker 1: could move into an administrative position in one of the
• 35:30
Speaker 1: richer towns next year and make way more money. But
• 35:33
Speaker 1: I'm afraid that I won't find as much joy in
• 35:34
Speaker 1: the business end of running a school as I do
• 35:36
Speaker 1: in my current role. I need your advice. Do what
• 35:39
Speaker 1: I love or work for a paycheck to afford a
• 35:41
  Speaker 1: comfortable life.
• 35:42
Speaker 2: Stephanie Hi, Stephanie Hi, Hi, Stephanie Hi's Kattie Britton our
• 35:49
  Speaker 2: special guest today.
• 35:50
Speaker 3: Oh, I'm blown away. She was a teacher too, in
• 35:55
Speaker 3: one of her lives, in one of my lives, Yeah,
• 35:57
  Speaker 3: my acting lives.
• 35:59
  Speaker 2: I mean that's I feel conflicted. I read this thing
• 36:03
Speaker 2: the other day from Bill Gates. There's a big tech conference,
• 36:05
Speaker 2: a big climate conference, at a big tech conference last
• 36:08
Speaker 2: week in San Francisco, and Bill Gates came out and
• 36:11
Speaker 2: said that in ten years, all nursing jobs and all
• 36:14
Speaker 2: teaching jobs will be done by AI. And if he
• 36:17
Speaker 2: said that, then I think that's probably going to be true.
• 36:21
Speaker 2: So I would normally say stick with your passion, but
• 36:24
Speaker 2: I feel like you're already on your You've gotten you
• 36:27
Speaker 2: had to get a degree, right, an extra degree to
• 36:29
Speaker 2: become an administrator. You've worked for this. It's going to
• 36:32
Speaker 2: be more financially secure for you. I feel like that's
• 36:36
  Speaker 2: your move.
• 36:38
Speaker 3: I kind of agree with that, But can I just
• 36:39
Speaker 3: ask one thing, which is, as you're thinking about it,
• 36:43
Speaker 3: could you make a list of the specific things And
• 36:46
Speaker 3: you kind of did in your letter but like the
• 36:49
Speaker 3: specific things that you love about this specific job, because
• 36:55
Speaker 3: then what you could do is, as you look to
• 36:58
Speaker 3: something that's more lucrative for you and like it creates
• 37:01
Speaker 3: a better lifestyle for you, you can try to see
• 37:04
Speaker 3: if you can fill in those things in some way,
• 37:07
Speaker 3: even if it's not this exact same circumstance, so that
• 37:10
Speaker 3: you're not completely sacrificing what you love, you know, right, Yeah,
• 37:15
  Speaker 3: that makes sense.
• 37:16
Speaker 2: But also don't downplay all the positive impacts you can
• 37:19
Speaker 2: have as an administrator, Like, there are many things you
• 37:21
Speaker 2: can do to also bring your self joy. It's not
• 37:24
Speaker 2: going to be the same as being inside a classroom
• 37:26
Speaker 2: every day, but you can influence the teachers. You can
• 37:29
Speaker 2: provide comfort and safety for them. Like, there are a
• 37:32
Speaker 2: lot of ways that you're going to find that you're
• 37:34
Speaker 2: going to find yourself experiencing like fulfillment and joy in
• 37:38
Speaker 2: your new job that you're not even yet aware of.
• 37:40
Speaker 2: So don't think that that's not going to have any
• 37:42
Speaker 2: of those aspects moving forward.
• 37:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, right, yeah, I agree with you there.
• 37:46
Speaker 5: I just I get worried because I see how people
• 37:49
Speaker 5: who move into that role kind of ease away from
• 37:53
Speaker 5: what I love to do in my job day to day,
• 37:55
Speaker 5: and that's what scares me. It's like, am I will
• 37:58
Speaker 5: I be allowed to break the mold and do that?
• 38:00
Speaker 5: Or do I kind of have to fall into this
• 38:03
Speaker 5: public school system of you know, you're in charge, you
• 38:05
Speaker 5: have to be a little bit less fun.
• 38:07
Speaker 3: Well that's the thing. You can be a leader in
• 38:10
Speaker 3: that circumstance. Yeah, you can be the one to break
• 38:12
Speaker 3: through that and like let it. And that's why it's
• 38:16
Speaker 3: like making a list is a helpful idea because then
• 38:18
Speaker 3: it's like, Okay, I want to include these things as
• 38:23
Speaker 3: part of this job, which everybody says, oh, that's not
• 38:26
Speaker 3: part of this job. It's like you're going to do
• 38:28
Speaker 3: it differently, you know, that's an opportunity.
• 38:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you should go into it with a
• 38:33
Speaker 2: whole with a whole bunch of energy about how you
• 38:36
Speaker 2: were going to make this role special for you and
• 38:39
Speaker 2: how it's going to work for you.
• 38:41
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 38:41
Speaker 2: I'm sure there will be some limitations that you maybe
• 38:43
Speaker 2: you don't foresee, or maybe you do foresee, but there's
• 38:46
Speaker 2: always ways that you can actually impact and have change
• 38:49
Speaker 2: in your environment, you know, and especially in a leadership role.
• 38:52
Speaker 2: So like look at it like that, like oh now,
• 38:54
Speaker 2: I'm going to get to influence and give like my
• 38:56
Speaker 2: passion for teaching. You're going to be able to infuse
• 38:59
Speaker 2: that into other teas that are working, you know, underneath you,
• 39:02
Speaker 2: and you're gonna be able to like kind of set
• 39:03
Speaker 2: the tone and set the vibe. And I mean nothing
• 39:06
Speaker 2: needs that more now than education.
• 39:08
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 39:08
Speaker 1: Yeah, you have obviously a little bit of a deadline
• 39:12
Speaker 1: on this because you have to sort of make a
• 39:13
Speaker 1: decision for this next year pretty soon. But like, if
• 39:16
Speaker 1: you really feel, like, you know, I want to take
• 39:18
Speaker 1: one more year as a teacher, Like I think that's
• 39:20
Speaker 1: okay too, And like I think the extra stuff that
• 39:23
Speaker 1: you have to do to make ends meet is kind
• 39:25
Speaker 1: of a recipe for a burnout. So you know, if
• 39:28
Speaker 1: it's not the right time now, do some soul searching
• 39:30
Speaker 1: see if it is. If it's not, then maybe it's
• 39:32
Speaker 1: next year or the following year. But you're going to
• 39:35
Speaker 1: gain so much more time and bandwidth that, like Connie said,
• 39:38
Speaker 1: you could do some volunteering with a group that like
• 39:41
Speaker 1: fulfills what your job is currently fulfilling.
• 39:43
Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been thinking a lot about it. I also
• 39:46
Speaker 5: was thinking about it a lot this weekend. So I'm
• 39:48
Speaker 5: so excited maybe proposing like more of a hybrid administrative role.
• 39:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's my district.
• 39:53
Speaker 5: That's something maybe they would be into if I could
• 39:55
Speaker 5: still teach a few classes a day and then do
• 39:59
Speaker 5: the leadership comp on it, sit through meetings and everything
• 40:01
  Speaker 5: like that.
• 40:02
Speaker 3: So I was like, it couldn't hurt. I suppose to
• 40:05
Speaker 3: just throw that out there.
• 40:06
Speaker 2: Absolutely, Yes, ok, great way to keep your feet on
• 40:10
Speaker 2: the ground and in touch with everything that's happening also,
• 40:12
Speaker 2: you know, like in your administration.
• 40:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
• 40:17
Speaker 2: Okay, great, Well, this was a very high upbeat phone call.
• 40:20
Speaker 2: I'm glad that we called, and I'm glad we could help.
• 40:22
Speaker 2: And good luck with everything you're doing. The Lord's work
• 40:24
  Speaker 2: so much.
• 40:25
Speaker 3: I know, seriously, that's the most what you're doing is
• 40:27
Speaker 3: the most valuable thing we could ever ask. Thank you
• 40:31
Speaker 3: so much, Thank you, Thanks to you all.
• 40:35
Speaker 2: You know what I hope I hope that with this AI,
• 40:37
Speaker 2: like everyone's so scared of AI. And I was reading
• 40:39
Speaker 2: this article about how everybody was so scared of computers
• 40:42
Speaker 2: in nineteen ninety three when Al Gore invented the Internet.
• 40:45
Speaker 2: Everyone was so scared that that the computers were going
• 40:48
Speaker 2: to take everybody's jobs. Everyone was freaking out. We don't
• 40:52
Speaker 2: remember this because half of us weren't even born then,
• 40:54
Speaker 2: but I was. And this article that I read reminded
• 40:58
Speaker 2: me of that. And that's how people feel about AI.
• 41:00
Speaker 2: And you know, AI is going to be used for
• 41:02
Speaker 2: bad stuff, but it's going to be used for good
• 41:04
Speaker 2: stuff too. Think about what we're dealing with with our
• 41:07
Speaker 2: education department being assaulted in the way that it has
• 41:10
Speaker 2: been with this administration. Wouldn't it just be the ice
• 41:13
Speaker 2: cream on the cake for all of us or the
• 41:17
Speaker 2: brownie for for AI to come in and educate the
• 41:20
Speaker 2: fucking shit out of all of these kids in America
• 41:24
Speaker 2: for free without school. Can you imagine how smart everyone's
• 41:27
Speaker 2: going to be if everything that they are doing just
• 41:30
Speaker 2: completely backfired? Anyway, No, anyone, Hello, I don't think I
• 41:37
Speaker 2: think we're there yet. Well we're not there yet, but
• 41:39
Speaker 2: what if that that's the silver lining?
• 41:41
Speaker 3: What if that happened. I like that. I like that
• 41:44
Speaker 3: point of view. Like I think, if that happened, that'll
• 41:46
  Speaker 3: be amazing.
• 41:46
Speaker 2: I mean, if you you have to be motivated to learn,
• 41:48
Speaker 2: but the people who are motivated to learn that want
• 41:51
Speaker 2: AI tutors, and they want these you know, they're going
• 41:54
Speaker 2: to be able to learn faster than anybody. I mean,
• 41:56
Speaker 2: all the information's there, so as much as you have
• 41:59
Speaker 2: a thirst for you're gonna get it.
• 42:01
  Speaker 3: M hmm.
• 42:01
Speaker 1: I feel like best case scenario, teachers are able to
• 42:04
Speaker 1: use it as a tool because, as our color just showed,
• 42:08
Speaker 1: being a teacher is so much more than just like

Speaker 1: providing information. It's like you are caring for these children.
• 42:13
Speaker 1: You're listening to them when they're having an issue, You're
• 42:15
Speaker 1: watching out for them, seeing if there's an issue at home,
• 42:18
Speaker 1: sort of thing that like AI is never going to do.
• 42:21
Speaker 1: But if you can take some of the burden off
• 42:22
Speaker 1: of teachers, that's I think where the sweet spot would be.
• 42:25
Speaker 3: I agree, Like, I think if we can be smart
• 42:27
Speaker 3: about it and not just have it be like okay,
• 42:30
Speaker 3: now it's AI and like fire all the teachers, right,
• 42:33
Speaker 3: you know what I mean, Like, but instead understand the
• 42:36
Speaker 3: value of who the teachers are and that they can
• 42:38
Speaker 3: that the AI can actually be an assist to them,
• 42:40
Speaker 3: so that maybe we're not burning out our teachers all
• 42:42
Speaker 3: the time, you know, I mean, we already pay our
• 42:44
Speaker 3: teachers total crap. So I don't know if it's going
• 42:47
Speaker 3: to help that situation, but I don't know. I agree.
• 42:50
Speaker 3: I think there's something where it could be. It could be,
• 42:53
Speaker 3: it could always it could work to our advantage.
• 42:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, well, let's take a quick break and we'll come
• 42:59
Speaker 1: right back with quickie.
• 43:01
Speaker 2: Please tag me for the special because I get so
• 43:03
Speaker 2: many tags about my books, but I'm not getting as
• 43:05
Speaker 2: many about my special, and my special is the newest
• 43:07
Speaker 2: thing out, so I want to make sure all my
• 43:09
Speaker 2: ardent fans are watching it and tagging me, and I'll
• 43:11
Speaker 2: repost you. And yes, it's called the Feeling. Okay, we're
• 43:18
Speaker 2: back with the star of the Motherhood, Connie Britton, the
• 43:21
Speaker 2: executive producer and star of the Motherhood, which is a
• 43:24
Speaker 2: new series on Hallmark. You can watch the first two
• 43:27
Speaker 2: episodes now. And this is for anyone any parent who
• 43:31
Speaker 2: is at home who is a single parent, or his
• 43:33
Speaker 2: friends with someone who is a single parent, to gain
• 43:35
Speaker 2: a better understanding of how important it is to build
• 43:38
Speaker 2: a community. Okay, do we have one last caller?
• 43:42
Speaker 1: Well, this was just an email, but let me do
• 43:45
Speaker 1: one last question. So Liz writes, her subject line is
• 43:48
Speaker 1: am I abusing my babysitter? Dear Chelsea? Right, Yeah, I'm
• 43:54
Speaker 1: a thirty seven year old working mom, of two kids,
• 43:56
Speaker 1: ages six and two. I'm fortunate to work four days
• 43:59
Speaker 1: a week, and I worked really hard to get to
• 44:01
Speaker 1: this place in my life. I have an incredible babysitter
• 44:03
Speaker 1: whom my girl's adore, whose hours are seven thirty to
• 44:06
Speaker 1: five thirty and Monday through Friday, and just as a reminder,
• 44:09
Speaker 1: she only works at her job four days a week.
• 44:11
Speaker 1: Since I had my first daughter, I felt conflicted about childcare.
• 44:15
Speaker 1: A friend once said I didn't have kids so someone
• 44:17
Speaker 1: else could raise them, and I felt that way too.
• 44:19
Speaker 1: I've always had the goal of minimizing the amount of
• 44:21
Speaker 1: time my kids spend with the babysitter, and I picked
• 44:23
Speaker 1: them up right at five thirty, which is great on
• 44:25
Speaker 1: my workdays. But I've also been using her on my
• 44:28
Speaker 1: Fridays off so I can have some strongly desired alone time.
• 44:31
Speaker 1: This felt like a win for me in terms of
• 44:33
Speaker 1: prioritizing myself and my sanity. Today, I checked in with
• 44:36
Speaker 1: her to make sure it's okay for me to continue
• 44:38
Speaker 1: sending them to her on Fridays. She's a small daycare
• 44:41
Speaker 1: center and they're the only kids there on Fridays. She
• 44:43
Speaker 1: shrugged and said sure, but seemed hesitant. She works hard.
• 44:46
Speaker 1: So I get it, but it triggered that old part
• 44:48
Speaker 1: of me that felt like I have to spend every
• 44:50
Speaker 1: free moment with my kids. As I'm typing this, I
• 44:52
Speaker 1: also realize that it triggered the part of me that
• 44:55
Speaker 1: needs to be completely self sufficient and never ask for
• 44:57
Speaker 1: or accept help. God forbid, I be a birday to
• 45:00
Speaker 1: anyone else. Don't worry. I'm in therapy. I've come so far,
• 45:03
Speaker 1: but the situation is so hard for me. Honestly, I
• 45:06
Speaker 1: don't feel like I need advice. What I need is
• 45:08
Speaker 1: for someone who doesn't know and love me to tell
• 45:10
Speaker 1: me it's not just okay, but good and necessary to
• 45:13
Speaker 1: take time for myself. I know the real work is
• 45:16
Speaker 1: to find that voice within myself, but I'm fucking busy,
• 45:18
Speaker 1: so I need some help with this one. Sincerely, Liz Connie,
• 45:23
Speaker 1: I mean the whole This is my show, Liz again,
• 45:27
Speaker 1: please watch The Motherhood.
• 45:29
Speaker 3: It's all about how hard it is for us to
• 45:32
Speaker 3: ask for help and to feel like it's okay. Like
• 45:36
Speaker 3: all six of the moms in all of our episodes,
• 45:39
Speaker 3: each one of them spoke about how they feel like
• 45:42
Speaker 3: they can't justify taking time for themselves. They can't justify
• 45:46
Speaker 3: buying things for themselves, because if it always comes down
• 45:49
Speaker 3: to time with their kid or the kid needs something,
• 45:53
Speaker 3: and that's always going to take the first priority, and
• 45:55
Speaker 3: that is how you literally destroy your own soul, and
• 45:59
Speaker 3: a mom the destroyed soul is not helpful to their child.
• 46:03
Speaker 3: And so it's like, I think what it begs you
• 46:06
Speaker 3: to do is, first of all, really ask yourself, like
• 46:11
Speaker 3: what do I need here? It's okay for me to
• 46:14
Speaker 3: need help, and I have reasons why I need that.
• 46:18
Speaker 3: And then just have a real conversation with your babysitter,
• 46:21
Speaker 3: because what you don't want is that icky like yeah, sure,
• 46:25
Speaker 3: but like there's some kind of like tension growing or
• 46:29
Speaker 3: you know, resentment or whatever. It's like, be real about
• 46:32
Speaker 3: it and be like this, you know this is important time.
• 46:35
Speaker 3: Don't apologize. This is important time for me. I need
• 46:38
Speaker 3: this time. But if it's a problem for you, let's
• 46:42
Speaker 3: talk about what works for both of us. But it's
• 46:44
Speaker 3: okay to stand up for and know that you need
• 46:50
Speaker 3: your own time because it's going to make you a
• 46:52
  Speaker 3: better mother.
• 46:53
  Speaker 2: Period.
• 46:54
Speaker 3: End of conversation, except for whenever you have to taste,
• 46:56
Speaker 3: say Chelsea, I'm just going to agree.
• 46:58
Speaker 2: With everything you said, because yeah, obvious that women need
• 47:01
Speaker 2: to take care of each other and themselves. So yes,
• 47:04
Speaker 2: I'm going to let that, let that sit without adding on. Okay,
• 47:08
Speaker 2: and that is the only time I will do that
• 47:10
Speaker 2: in our lives. Connie. I want you to know that week.
• 47:13
Speaker 3: Like literally, I'm gonna take a little pink sqeeze.
• 47:16
Speaker 2: Okay, Well, Connie Brittain, we finally did it. You're on
• 47:19
