- 0:00Gavin: Can you believe that it has been one year of the Noble Dram?
- 0:06Aaron: Hold up.
- 0:06Aaron: It's been more than a year.
- 0:10Aaron: It's like a year and two weeks.
- 0:12Aaron: Oh my god, we missed our birthday.
- 0:16Gavin: You know what?
- 0:17Gavin: Tonight, we're gonna celebrate together.
- 0:51Aaron: Welcome everybody to this week's episode of The Noble Dram.
- 0:55Aaron: The long-awaited return of both Gavin and I to the studios simultaneously.
- 1:02Gavin: Together.
- 1:03Aaron: For the first time in season three, uh, we had a great time uh adventuring.
- 1:09Aaron: Is that a fair way to say it?
- 1:11Aaron: Yes.
- 1:11Aaron: Out, um, getting a little well-deserved R.
- 1:14Aaron: Yes, yeah, a little tan, a little yeah, I've I feel Tanner, if that's a thing.
- 1:21Gavin: Sure, yeah.
- 1:22Gavin: I I think Tanner, isn't that what they call people that tan hides?
- 1:27Aaron: Somebody makes leather.
- 1:28Gavin: Yeah.
- 1:28Aaron: I actually know a guy named Tanner.
- 1:30Gavin: I have a cousin named Tanner.
- 1:32Aaron: Does he tan leather?
- 1:33Aaron: Not that I know of.
- 1:34Aaron: I feel like we're getting off target.
- 1:35Aaron: I should stop for a second.
- 1:40Aaron: I can see you guys at home right now.
- 1:42Aaron: You're in the process of changing the camera, trying to figure out what's going on.
- 1:45Aaron: Like, hold up.
- 1:46Aaron: Don't adjust your TV.
- 1:49Aaron: I'm missing a beard.
- 1:55Aaron: Um, yeah, I may have gotten too close to the hedge clippers and just kind of hacked into them a little bit.
- 2:05Aaron: Nah, I needed to get rid of it.
- 2:08Aaron: Don't worry though.
- 2:10Aaron: Um, in a wonderful gesture of love and kindness from my wife, um, I caught a tear roll down her face when she saw me without it.
- 2:22Aaron: And so um I immediately began growing a bike.
- 2:25Aaron: So here we are, here we are, halfway to having a real beard.
- 2:30Gavin: Um, speaking of that, uh, I'm gonna tattle on my older brother um real quick.
- 2:36Gavin: I got a fun beard uh goatee story.
- 2:40Gavin: Um so once upon a time we both worked for the same construction company and we were uh this was when I was before you continue on with the story.
- 2:50Aaron: Is this gonna get him in trouble with the law?
- 2:52Gavin: No, no, no, no.
- 2:53Aaron: You continue on.
- 2:54Aaron: He's a tattle.
- 2:55Aaron: I just want to make sure
- 2:56Gavin: he may hate.
- 2:56Aaron: What is what is the statute of limitations for whatever crime he you're going to
- 3:02Gavin: He may not like me saying this out in the ether, but uh we were out on a jump site, and I think he was uh hanging some drywall, and he had a long goatee.
- 3:16Gavin: Is that a euphemism?
- 3:17Gavin: No, definitely not.
- 3:19Gavin: Uh, but he was uh hanging drywall and he got the drill caught in his goatee.
- 3:26Gavin: Oh, oh, and it spun around.
- 3:28Gavin: And then he had to take the utility knife and like oh cut it on the on the job site.
- 3:38Aaron: On the job side, at least you have a utility knife in your pocket.
- 3:41Aaron: Yeah, I think it was a utility knife, I don't know.
- 3:43Aaron: I've heard I've heard more than one horror story of a guy getting hair caught or a girl getting hair caught in a drill or some sort of rotating piece of equipment and tearing out a chunk of stuff.
- 3:54Aaron: Yeah, um, not always just hair.
- 3:56Aaron: Uh yeah, that can be dangerous.
- 3:59Gavin: Yeah, I luckily I've not had to go through that on an accident.
- 4:05Gavin: Well, you've never had to hang drywall?
- 4:07Gavin: Oh, I've hung plenty plenty of drywall.
- 4:09Aaron: Okay.
- 4:10Aaron: You've never you've never had a section of your beard physically ripped from your body.
- 4:17Aaron: Nope.
- 4:18Gavin: Nope.
- 4:18Gavin: Yeah, not yet.
- 4:19Gavin: I mean the day is young.
- 4:21Gavin: We'll see how it goes.
- 4:22Gavin: The wife is threatened occasionally.
- 4:25Gavin: I'm gonna cut that thing off while you're sleeping.
- 4:28Aaron: So yeah, the the last time my wife saw me without a beard um was actually ironically very close to being to the day, 13 years um before this time.
- 4:45Aaron: And I have caught understandably some grief and hell from her because at times, part of the fun of a beard is just seeing quite how burly and mountain man-esque you can get it to go.
- 4:59Aaron: And when left to its own devices, beards kind of have a mind of their own.
- 5:03Aaron: I mean, they just kind of go wild.
- 5:05Aaron: Um, and yeah, looking back on some of the photos over the 13 years, there's a bit of Sasquatch vibe coming off of me at times, right?
- 5:14Aaron: So I understand why she kind of pushed on me, but she has been heckling me for quite some time.
- 5:18Aaron: Don't you think it's time to shave that thing off?
- 5:22Aaron: And uh, we got about here down one cheek, and she went and realized disbelief.
- 5:30Aaron: She's not sure she likes me so much for that one, but um, yeah, that afternoon we began growing the bathtub.
- 5:37Gavin: I love how you said we.
- 5:38Gavin: You're kind of committed, we're we're in it together.
- 5:48Gavin: Speaking of birthdays and beards, uh, I don't know about you, but when I turned 18 and I had to sign up for the draft, the U.S.
- 5:59Gavin: government and Gillette used to send you out a razor in the mail.
- 6:05Gavin: Did you get a razor?
- 6:07Aaron: I I did.
- 6:07Aaron: I did.
- 6:08Aaron: I don't I wouldn't have been able to identify which brand of razor it was I received, but I absolutely did.
- 6:14Aaron: I will say, in a very weird twist, as this has grown back, right?
- 6:18Aaron: It gets a little unruly, and so I kind of wanted to clean up the edges, right?
- 6:21Aaron: Kind of make it crisp, so to speak.
- 6:24Aaron: Um, and that meant I had to go find a razor.
- 6:27Aaron: Um, and what I realized is I've got a lot of blades, but I don't have a handle anywhere.
- 6:34Aaron: I don't know what happened to it.
- 6:35Aaron: In the 13 years since I actually shaved my face last, I have absolutely lost the razor.
- 6:41Gavin: You borrowed your wife's razor, didn't you?
- 6:43Aaron: No, I actually use the little cheapy disposable ones to shave my head, and so I just use that one to run my beard.
- 6:50Aaron: But yeah, I if you happen to have, I don't know which razor system I have, but I got a lot of blades for one.
- 6:58Aaron: I have a no handle though.
- 7:00Gavin: So Aaron @the Nobledram.com.
- 7:04Aaron: Shoot me an email, should show me a picture of what you got.
- 7:06Aaron: Oh, you know, what my stuff is.
- 7:08Gavin: I don't know what kind of photos you're asking for.
- 7:14Aaron: If you like the new beards, do new pictures.
- 7:17Aaron: Um, yeah, so here, let us say part of the start of season three did not align calendar-wise quite as clean and crisp as we wanted.
- 7:29Aaron: And so it forced Gavin and I to each kind of shoot an episode on our own, um, which is not something we normally do, although it's not unheard of, it's not the norm.
- 7:38Aaron: And so I was sad, and I thought it would have been inappropriate to celebrate a birthday without us both here.
- 7:48Aaron: Agreed.
- 7:49Aaron: So I said, let's save this, even though this is not technically the Noble Dram's birthday.
- 7:56Aaron: The Noble Dram's birthday happens to be October 1st.
- 7:59Aaron: That's right.
- 8:00Aaron: We thought it was important that we be together to celebrate a birthday.
- 8:04Aaron: Well, cheers to that, you know.
- 8:07Aaron: All right, so that means we need a birthday-themed whiskey.
- 8:14Aaron: And this, my friend, is not birthday-themed whiskey.
- 8:18Aaron: What is this?
- 8:19Aaron: This is starter whiskey.
- 8:22Gavin: Yeah, it's actually a pretty good starter whiskey.
- 8:24Aaron: It's pretty good.
- 8:25Aaron: Sometimes, sometimes the starter is soft and light and very easy to this little rougher.
- 8:31Aaron: I would call it a rougher, it's just a little bit more punch in the face.
- 8:35Aaron: No, no, I'm moving that glass out of the way because we need real glasses for the real official tasting.
- 8:41Gavin: Real glasses, let's go.
- 8:43Aaron: We were given the challenge.
- 8:45Aaron: I was given the challenge.
- 8:47Aaron: I needed to come up with a whiskey that personified the noble dram's birthday.
- 8:55Aaron: That's a that's a pretty tall order.
- 8:59Aaron: So you you start thinking, like, well, what says more squatty?
- 9:04Aaron: What says birthday more than birthday bourbon?
- 9:12Aaron: Ooh.
- 9:13Aaron: Yeah, I figure why not, right?
- 9:16Aaron: All right, so tonight's first horror of the evening.
- 9:21Gavin: Don't break that cork.
- 9:22Gavin: Nice.
- 9:26Aaron: Some people just don't have it.
- 9:28Aaron: Some people do.
- 9:28Aaron: All right, so this happens to be Old Forester's birthday bourbon.
- 9:34Aaron: This is the 2022 release.
- 9:38Aaron: That means this one, I shouldn't say that means the 2022 release was distilled in 2011, putting this as an 11-year-old bourbon.
- 9:53Aaron: Clocking in at a very reasonable 96 proof.
- 10:00Aaron: That's 48% for those people who like who like the percentage numbers.
- 10:05Aaron: Um limited release that they do um now every year.
- 10:14Aaron: This happens to be the 22nd year they did it in honor of George Garvin Brown's birthday.
- 10:22Aaron: He's the founder of Old Forester.
- 10:24Aaron: The amount of birthday bourbon they make, what's a fun little nugget, represents one day's production capacity.
- 10:34Aaron: So, considering this is a third of a percent.
- 10:41Aaron: 300 and something days a year, right?
- 10:44Aaron: Probably closer to half a percent, because they're I don't know what I don't know how many weekends they're running the stills.
- 10:51Aaron: Um, but you'd think this would be easier to get a hold of.
- 10:57Aaron: You would be wrong.
- 10:58Aaron: It is not easy to get a hold of.
- 11:00Aaron: Um, this one happens to have been one of those really lucky draws, the gift from the gods, and which a local big box retailer sends me an email and says, Because of all of my points, aka I won this in the drawing, and I got to go down and purchase it for what they deemed to be retail.
- 11:23Aaron: It was a little over what I understood retail to be, but that's okay.
- 11:27Aaron: My chances of ever having another birthday bourbon are pretty slim, and so I jumped all over it.
- 11:34Gavin: Uh, do you um go on and try to win the opportunity to purchase birthday bourbon from Old Forester every year?
- 11:43Aaron: Yeah, so there's a number of I shouldn't say one-off, there's a number of limited release bourbons that Old Forester does, and I sign up.
- 11:54Aaron: Well, this is not contingent upon Old Forester.
- 11:57Aaron: I've got a lot of distilleries.
- 11:58Aaron: I sign up for the one-off things, just thinking shotgun approach.
- 12:04Aaron: If I shoot at everything, then we'll hopefully I'll hit something, right?
- 12:09Gavin: Yeah, that's fair.
- 12:10Gavin: That's fair.
- 12:11Gavin: I do it uh every year as well.
- 12:14Gavin: Um and as you can tell, because I don't have a birthday bourbon, it never happens.
- 12:19Aaron: Yeah, I I'll be honest, every time this big big box retailer, I'm not dropping names because you shop where you want to shop, right?
- 12:29Aaron: And I'll I'll be honest, my chances of ever winning this again are pretty slim because I really don't shop there much anymore, right?
- 12:34Aaron: I've moved on to a new place, but they you rank out the things that they're going to have and what priority you would have.
- 12:43Aaron: I put this one, and whenever it shows up, this one was one of my top ones almost every time, right?
- 12:50Aaron: Um, I never thought I'd I'd hit the lottery, so to speak.
- 12:55Aaron: Um, but yeah, here we are.
- 12:57Aaron: So, in an episode in which we talk about birthdays, I did what I do best, and I went digging on the internet trying to find silly birthday factoids.
- 13:13Gavin: You went down the rabbit holes, which I did, I did.
- 13:15Aaron: I it was to be honest, staff meeting at the office today wasn't that thrilling, and so I uh I I got a lot of bourbon research done, or birthday research, I should say.
- 13:26Aaron: Well, both.
- 13:27Gavin: I heard the meeting was really hot, that's what I remember.
- 13:30Aaron: Uh the AC wasn't fully working in there, so that when I say the meeting wasn't very eventful, um, it at least was short, right?
- 13:38Aaron: Like they kind of like, let's get out of here.
- 13:40Aaron: It's hot in here.
- 13:41Aaron: All right, so I got I got to dig in and I I stumbled into a really fun little nugget.
- 13:48Aaron: Um the Egyptians are the first civilization to have a recorded instance of celebrating somebody's birthday.
- 13:59Aaron: All right, so obviously before calendars and they kept tracks of yearly cycles.
- 14:06Aaron: How did you know it was your birthday?
- 14:08Aaron: Right?
- 14:09Aaron: So that kind of makes sense.
- 14:10Aaron: So, yeah, so the the oldest recorded reference to somebody's birthday celebration was in 3,000 BC, like long, long time ago.
- 14:19Aaron: And and my internet search said that it was specifically saved for royalty.
- 14:25Aaron: And I was like, Yeah, they probably weren't writing down the commoners' birthday celebrations, right?
- 14:30Aaron: Like 3,000 years ago, that's somebody's carving that in stone.
- 14:35Aaron: Dave doesn't get that on his birthday.
- 14:38Aaron: Like you gotta be
- 14:38Gavin: Gotta be David.
- 14:39Aaron: You gotta be Tutankhamun or something, right?
- 14:42Aaron: But I what we know of as a birthday actually didn't really start until the Roman Empire, where they actually began to celebrate just the average citizen's birthdays, right?
- 14:54Aaron: Um now at that point it was more the men, not so much the children and the kids or uh and the women, but uh that was more of a a reflection on the society at the time, right?
- 15:07Aaron: But what we think of as birthday parties actually has its roots in Germany, which I found intriguing because if you remember back last year, we talked about another celebration that we think is very commonplace now that actually was a German tradition as well, which we talked about Easter, um, starting with the notion of a rabbit and bringing eggs and and treats and that kind of stuff.
- 15:33Aaron: But the German, the German party of what they call Kinderfest, was a children's birthday party in which you had cake with candles, and the candles represented the numbers of years old the kid was.
- 15:49Aaron: So, really the the forerunner to what we think of as birthday parties today.
- 15:55Aaron: Alright, so that got me thinking.
- 16:02Gavin: We know how that's dangerous.
- 16:04Aaron: Uh, what is the one song everyone sings at a birthday party?
- 16:09Aaron: You don't have to sing it.
- 16:11Aaron: Like we're trying, we're trying to increase viewership, not drive people away.
- 16:16Gavin: It depends on when you're what time of the party maybe for the Duck Duck Goose or something else.
- 16:23Aaron: Duck Duck Goose?
- 16:23Gavin: I don't know.
- 16:25Gavin: Simon Says.
- 16:26Aaron: So the original song Happy Birthday to You or Happy Birthday to Me, wherever you want to sing it, was actually written in 1893 by none other than a kindergarten teacher.
- 16:41Aaron: Um, and so two sisters.
- 16:44Aaron: One was a one was a teacher, one was a principal, both handling small children.
- 16:48Aaron: And so it was actually written as a song that had different lyrics.
- 16:52Aaron: We talked a little bit about uh this in our George Thurgood episode where we talked about one Scotch, one bourbon, one uh one beer, and the order being mixed up over the years on that one, too.
- 17:04Aaron: The song was actually written as good morning to all, and it was a song that they would sing at the school as a it's morning time, everybody's here getting ready for the day.
- 17:15Aaron: It wasn't until 1911 that they changed the words to Happy Birthday to You.
- 17:21Aaron: Really?
- 17:22Aaron: And thus the tradition is born, and from what I understand, a great deal of legal battle over copyright infringement and all this kind of stuff.
- 17:31Aaron: And eventually they said no, it's too ubiquitous, you can no longer um claim royalties on the use of the song Happy Birthday to You.
- 17:41Aaron: And but that wasn't until like 2015.
- 17:45Aaron: Yeah, because I I remember so come to find out you owe somebody money for all those times you sang happy birthday.
- 17:51Gavin: Well, it's like when you go to a restaurant, you used they used to not sing happy birthday because they were afraid that they weren't able to actually sing it.
- 17:59Aaron: Uh I I just figured they wanted to be able to put their own little spin on it and made it special just for them.
- 18:04Aaron: Yeah.
- 18:05Aaron: All the all the restaurant birthday songs have something to do with the restaurant you're in, right?
- 18:10Aaron: Actually, dropping the restaurant's name or something.
- 18:14Aaron: Where uh sombrero and oh yeah, no, so I want to I want to get I want to get I want to get to our birthday traditions here in a little bit.
- 18:24Aaron: Um but I don't want to steal thunder because I we're I'm right there with you.
- 18:30Aaron: We we we have a lot of kids, and so it means lots of birthdays.
- 18:35Aaron: Not together.
- 18:36Aaron: Well, I mean collectively do we do, but most of them are mine.
- 18:39Aaron: Um Gavin has far less children than I do.
- 18:43Aaron: Um, but it became we like there's that restaurant that we always went to, right?
- 18:49Aaron: And so like we uh we all know the song they sing because every year that's where we are.
- 18:56Aaron: Um, I uh I'm a believer in the fact that birthdays should have queso.
- 19:02Aaron: I know that's not the norm, I get it.
- 19:06Aaron: But I can't imagine not going to a Mexican food place on my birthday.
- 19:11Aaron: Um well, yeah.
- 19:13Aaron: Uh if they want to sponsor us, we would totally tell you all about all their locations across the country.
- 19:19Gavin: I I can't disagree with you.
- 19:21Gavin: I mean, birthday queso.
- 19:23Gavin: You would figure out how to get a candle to stand up in there?
- 19:27Gavin: I mean, I mean, you can this is a topic of conversation that we had fairly recently.
- 19:35Gavin: I have a question for you.
- 19:36Gavin: Oh, geez.
- 19:37Gavin: Taking a little side quest.
- 19:42Gavin: All right.
- 19:42Gavin: Queso.
- 19:44Gavin: Is queso a condiment?
- 19:47Gavin: Does it stand alone as a condiment?
- 19:49Gavin: Can you put queso on just about anything?
- 19:54Aaron: All right, so I think you asked multiple questions there.
- 19:57Aaron: I'm gonna answer the first question with an emphatic absolutely yes.
- 20:01Aaron: Queso is a condiment.
- 20:03Aaron: Hear me out.
- 20:04Aaron: A condiment is something you wouldn't eat alone.
- 20:10Aaron: As much as I love queso, I'm not sitting down with a spoon.
- 20:15Gavin: Well, you just haven't had a...
- 20:17Aaron: Potato cheese soup - Very much like queso.
- 20:20Aaron: But that you can eat with a spoon.
- 20:24Gavin: Put a potato in it and it's
- 20:26Aaron: Yeah, I to me, if it if uh maybe maybe I'm wrong here.
- 20:34Aaron: Does a condiment have to be liquid form?
- 20:37Gavin: That's a good question.
- 20:39Aaron: Would you consider pico de gallo a condiment?
- 20:45Gavin: I almost I was gonna say no, but on the flip side of that, relish is I think it comes in a squirt bottle.
- 20:54Gavin: Yeah, I think it's kind of feels pseudo-liquidy.
- 20:58Gavin: Yeah, yeah, I'm with you.
- 20:59Gavin: I mean, I think queso can I never really thought about it as a condiment, but I think it could be because yeah, I smother it on a burger, I smother it on a hot dog, I smother it on chips, I smother it on my face and my beard, and it drips on your shirt.
- 21:17Aaron: That's a condiment.
- 21:18Aaron: Like condiments drip on your clothes, yeah.
- 21:20Aaron: Right, yeah, I'm with you.
- 21:21Aaron: To me, it feels I was gonna say condimenty, but that sounds weird.
- 21:28Aaron: Yeah, uh, yeah, it absolutely feels like a condiment to me.
- 21:31Gavin: All right.
- 21:32Gavin: Well, sorry for the side quest.
- 21:33Gavin: I just feel like we needed to get it out in the air, let it air out a little bit.
- 21:37Gavin: All right.
- 21:39Aaron: So, one other thing before we get into what are we tasting and what do we think of Old Forester's 2022 birthday bourbon?
- 21:47Aaron: Um, there there is a thing that happens.
- 21:51Aaron: I've gotten older.
- 21:52Aaron: I I'm much older than you.
- 21:53Aaron: I know more than children.
- 21:55Aaron: I know I mean 20% older than you.
- 21:59Aaron: I'm good at math.
- 22:00Aaron: I the I have got to experience more birthdays.
- 22:07Aaron: I know more about birthdays than you do.
- 22:09Aaron: So I'm clearly the expert on birthdays here.
- 22:12Aaron: Right?
- 22:12Aaron: You're still learning things that I've known for years.
- 22:16Gavin: Is this like the old wise man versus the young whippersnapper?
- 22:20Aaron: No, you are absolutely a whippersnapper.
- 22:22Aaron: One of the traditions when you get into higher digits of your birthday.
- 22:29Aaron: People want to tell you what life was like when you were born.
- 22:33Aaron: Okay.
- 22:34Aaron: Right?
- 22:34Aaron: Mm-hmm.
- 22:35Aaron: So I recently had a birthday.
- 22:37Aaron: The wrapping paper had headlines from the year in which I was born.
- 22:42Aaron: Right?
- 22:43Aaron: What was the number one rock song?
- 22:46Aaron: What was a long time ago?
- 22:47Aaron: I'm not, I'm not looking I'm not giving out a number.
- 22:49Aaron: What BC?
- 22:50Aaron: I'm not giving out a number.
- 22:52Aaron: No, Jesus and I never knew each other personally.
- 22:55Aaron: Well, I mean, kind of, but I'm not in person.
- 22:58Aaron: It's all different debate.
- 22:59Gavin: In your heart.
- 23:00Aaron: We can get into all the spiritual things another time.
- 23:02Aaron: No, but one of the traditions is you kind of get this birthday card wrapping paper, whatever it says that in the year in which you were born, this is what was going on.
- 23:14Aaron: So, in honor of the noble Dram, I spent a little time today finding out what the world was really like on October 1st, 2025.
- 23:28Gavin: Wow, that was so long ago.
- 23:30Aaron: Let's I'll be honest, further back than I thought it was.
- 23:34Aaron: It didn't, it doesn't feel like a year.
- 23:37Aaron: This has been so much fun hanging out with you guys every week, sipping, sniffing, sipping, and savoring.
- 23:44Aaron: Um, like the time has really flown by.
- 23:47Aaron: So I looked the big headline on October 1st, 2025.
- 23:52Aaron: Do you know what it was?
- 23:54Gavin: Don't have the slightest.
- 23:56Aaron: That was day number one of the longest federal government shutdown in U.S.
- 24:01Aaron: history.
- 24:02Aaron: They didn't know that at on day one, right?
- 24:04Aaron: They they didn't know that until later, but that was day number one.
- 24:08Gavin: Silly government.
- 24:10Aaron: That was the day if you were non-essential, um, which normally we refer to COVID.
- 24:16Aaron: This is slightly different.
- 24:19Aaron: Um, yeah, that they they began furloughing paychecks and also I mean absolute, absolute mess.
- 24:26Aaron: Also went back and checked.
- 24:28Aaron: On October 1st, 2025, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at $46,441.
- 24:38Aaron: Seems like a lot.
- 24:40Aaron: Really does.
- 24:42Aaron: I checked today.
- 24:44Aaron: Now this is the day of recording, not the day of airing.
- 24:48Aaron: We're just under $51,500.
- 24:51Aaron: So we're up another 10, 12% from there.
- 24:56Aaron: So it's been a good year in that regard.
- 24:59Aaron: Um, one year ago, national average for a gallon of gas.
- 25:08Aaron: Venture a guess.
- 25:09Aaron: 237.
- 25:11Aaron: Ah man, you're going back way too far to get to 237.
- 25:15Aaron: 337.
- 25:16Aaron: $3.16.
- 25:18Aaron: Okay.
- 25:19Aaron: Today's national average, four dollars and forty-eight cents.
- 25:24Aaron: It's gone up.
- 25:25Aaron: I blame the electric cars.
- 25:27Aaron: Oh, yeah.
- 25:28Aaron: Yeah, no, that's my argument.
- 25:30Aaron: Um, and the thing everybody was going nuts over a little over a year ago.
- 25:37Aaron: Egg geese.
- 25:38Aaron: A dozen eggs one year ago cost the average American three dollars and 49 cents.
- 25:46Aaron: Today, the average dozen eggs cost two dollars and twenty-seven cents.
- 25:52Aaron: That's like getting six extra free eggs.
- 25:57Aaron: What a great deal.
- 25:59Aaron: What a world we live in.
- 26:00Gavin: I mean,
- 26:01Aaron: all right,
- 26:01Gavin: Some ups and some downs.
- 26:04Aaron: Wouldn't be a whiskey show if we didn't talk about whiskey news.
- 26:07Aaron: Oh, yeah.
- 26:08Aaron: On October 1st, 2025, Angels Envy announced their first ever aged statement released when they released their 10-year-old cask strength.
- 26:21Gavin: And we would have just gotten back from Angel's Envy.
- 26:25Aaron: Yep, we missed it by that much.
- 26:28Aaron: And the other big whiskey news on October 1st, 2025, the sale of House Spirits Distillery was approved by bankruptcy court for a whopping $2.7 million.
- 26:42Aaron: You may not know House Spirits Distillery unless you knew them by their brand name, the Westward American Single Mold Distillery.
- 26:53Aaron: Declared bankruptcy and agreed to sell one year ago.
- 26:58Aaron: Somehow.
- 26:59Aaron: There it is.
- 27:01Aaron: That's what I got, people.
- 27:03Gavin: Take a bow.
- 27:04Gavin: That was pretty good.
- 27:05Aaron: Um, but I think what's most important.
- 27:08Aaron: Well, it's it's obviously the people around the glass.
- 27:11Aaron: Second most important is what's in the glass.
- 27:13Aaron: So let's talk a little bit about what's in the glass.
- 27:14Aaron: All right, all right.
- 27:15Aaron: So this one's a fun one.
- 27:18Aaron: It mostly because recently I was sitting on a patio and we were talking about all the various old Forester releases, and we started talking about which ones were the good ones and which ones are and this one is different than the rest.
- 27:38Gavin: I agree.
- 27:39Aaron: I think Is that a you feel that is a fair statement?
- 27:42Gavin: I think that's a I think that's a fair statement.
- 27:44Gavin: Um there's just something a little bit different than this.
- 27:49Gavin: Like I I think if you're asking me because it's your bottle, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go ahead and go.
- 27:54Gavin: I'm gonna dive in.
- 27:55Gavin: I'm gonna nose it.
- 27:56Gavin: Um typically on an old Forester you get that kind of banana-y note.
- 28:06Gavin: You really don't get none.
- 28:10Aaron: I was really shocked by that.
- 28:12Aaron: Like, I I like go ahead and write banana down before I even pick the glass up, but no, it's not there at all.
- 28:18Gavin: Nothing.
- 28:19Gavin: Um, I think, I mean, I don't know if it's the power of persuasion because of it being called birthday bourbon, but I think that it's got a nose, like a um I think you're Are you gonna say birthday cake?
- 28:33Gavin: Well, where I was gonna go was your mom.
- 28:37Gavin: Your mom.
- 28:38Aaron: You you think this bourbon smells like my mother?
- 28:41Aaron: The that's a compliment, mom.
- 28:43Gavin: The the cherry cake that your mom made.
- 28:45Gavin: Oh, yeah, cherry squares.
- 28:46Gavin: Yeah, the cherry squares.
- 28:48Gavin: I think this has a lot of that same cherry forward note on the nose.
- 28:53Gavin: Um, it's almost like a cherry flavored cupcake.
- 28:58Aaron: See, I was getting a little more of orange, yes, citrus to the nose than than cherry, but I I now that you say cherry, I get I get a bit of that.
- 29:08Aaron: Um have you ever had the cocktail uh blood and sand?
- 29:14Aaron: It is even parts, um cherry liqueur, orange juice, scotch, and um sweet vermouth.
- 29:28Aaron: And so it has this dark cherry but yet orange juice kind of thing going on.
- 29:34Aaron: I this is not nearly as bold as that.
- 29:37Aaron: I get I get more oak on the nose than maybe the rest of it.
- 29:42Aaron: Um which I find intriguing because when I first put the nose in, like I get orange right away.
- 29:48Aaron: Right away.
- 29:48Aaron: And I'm I'm struggling I'm feeling more peel or like the in um old fashioned when you know you express the oils out of the the orange skin.
- 29:59Aaron: Um that I'm getting more of that than juice per se.
- 30:02Aaron: Um because I don't get the sweetness of orange juice, I don't get the sweetness of cherry, like when you think of like um like jellied cherries or candied cherries, like it's not that kind of sweet sugariness, it's a little bit more of the tart, like fresh cherry, yeah, right kind of thing to me.
- 30:26Aaron: Um, but yeah, there's there is a distinct amount of oak undertone that runs through all of it.
- 30:32Aaron: Would you say new oak or old oak?
- 30:35Aaron: I mean, the guy who read the label would say at least 11-year-old oak, right?
- 30:42Aaron: Um, yeah, I like the question is always when you say oak, is it that dusty dry wood?
- 30:50Aaron: Is it that kind of toasted that adds like a little bit of a marshmallowy sweetness kind of oak?
- 30:55Aaron: Is it charred charcoal kind of wood?
- 31:01Aaron: Um, I I don't know if there's one of them that stands out.
- 31:06Aaron: I think I get a little bit of all of that.
- 31:09Aaron: Um, there's a dustiness to it.
- 31:11Aaron: Um, there's absolutely a little bit of like barrel char kind of over to it.
- 31:17Gavin: I didn't catch that at the beginning, but now I'm starting to pick up a little bit.
- 31:25Aaron: Coming back and re-nosing the glass after a sip, because I think it's much more pronounced on the finish.
- 31:31Aaron: I think I picked up more of it on the nose that way.
- 31:33Gavin: Yeah.
- 31:33Gavin: Palette.
- 31:34Gavin: Um, I think that there is a um like a chocolate covered cherry, like a dark chocolate cherry note that I get off on the palette.
- 31:45Gavin: Um there's almost like a coffee mocha note almost.
- 31:53Gavin: Um yeah, I think that's kind of where I'm sitting.
- 31:58Gavin: I think there's a like a dark chocolate cherry coffee mocha thing going on.
- 32:05Aaron: Yeah, I don't know if I get so much of the cherry here, but I absolutely get the dark chocolate and the cocoa.
- 32:10Aaron: Um, or almost like there's that that that bitterness that's that edge between dark coffee and like or dark chocolate and coffee.
- 32:20Aaron: Right?
- 32:20Aaron: That it kind of flirts with that edge.
- 32:23Aaron: Um, it reminds me a bit of the like overly toasted grain notes that you get with like a Glimmer Angy signet, right?
- 32:32Aaron: That it's got that um oh yeah, like a like a cocoa nib, right?
- 32:40Aaron: That's got that sharp edge, bitterness, kind of like a coffee does, but still has that chocolatey kind of undertone.
- 32:46Aaron: Um, yeah.
- 32:47Aaron: I I think the fruit comes back a little bit on the finish, um, more than I think it does on the palate.
- 32:54Aaron: But I could not agree more than the the chocolate and cocoa kind of things.
- 33:00Gavin: Well, uh I think you know that on the finish too.
- 33:03Gavin: Um I think it lingers with that coffee and um kind of dark chocolate, cocoa, mocha flavor.
- 33:12Gavin: And I think it it lingers just a tad bit, and it's just very velvety.
- 33:17Gavin: I think there's like um it's it's not like a red velvet cake, but there's just like a velvety mess.
- 33:25Gavin: There's a just sweet, but not too sweet.
- 33:30Aaron: It just you know, so often we agree.
- 33:33Aaron: Uh-oh.
- 33:34Aaron: And a lot of times it's because you're right, and I I don't want to argue with you if you're right, right?
- 33:39Aaron: So I I think there is this little burst of the cherry that comes in there.
- 33:45Aaron: All right, that was the first time I had written down cherry was was finished.
- 33:50Aaron: Um, I I think the dark chocolate shows back up, and so there I get a little that dark chocolate covered cherry.
- 33:56Aaron: Um I'll say the finish here for a bourbon is actually quite long.
- 34:01Aaron: You said velvety.
- 34:04Aaron: Mine turns very dry.
- 34:05Aaron: My mine after that burst of fruit and chocolate, it turns very drying and and heads towards oakiness.
- 34:16Aaron: And so, and maybe this is the fact that it's just 11 years old, right?
- 34:20Aaron: And I'm a little sensitive to oak, right?
- 34:23Aaron: Um, but I I can almost get a drying oak flavor at the end that leaves just a little hint of man.
- 34:33Aaron: I wish that was softer.
- 34:35Aaron: You know what I mean?
- 34:36Aaron: Um it's and I and I feel like I'm kind of nitpicking at it, right?
- 34:42Aaron: Because it's a beautiful whiskey, but there's this that that little bit of like catches you right in the back of the palate um on the finish that that I wish wasn't there.
- 34:52Aaron: A literal throat kick or punch.
- 34:55Aaron: Yeah, it's it's not that bold because it it's as the finish dies down, and I I and so we've we've talked about this, right?
- 35:04Aaron: Sometimes like something is so loud, and then when you turn it off, you can kind of hear the hum.
- 35:08Aaron: Like it almost feels like once once the the flavors are gone, the hum of that dry oak is all I'm left with at the end.
- 35:17Aaron: And and it lingers for quite some time, and it and again, maybe this is just that I'm I'm sensitive to that that flavor, and so that I'm noticing it.
- 35:27Aaron: Maybe I'm overly sensitive.
- 35:29Aaron: It's okay.
- 35:31Gavin: It's okay.
- 35:32Gavin: We'll get you there one day.
- 35:34Aaron: But maybe, maybe like Samson, it was my hair that gave me all my strength, and now with with my beard cut short, I'm a sensitive.
- 35:43Aaron: Uh everything I was gonna say was gonna be mean.
- 35:46Gavin: So it's alright, big fella.
- 35:49Gavin: I need to be sensitive.
- 35:52Aaron: Do you do you feel like you're prepared to give it a number?
- 35:54Aaron: I think I think I am.
- 35:55Aaron: I'm not I'm not cheating and looking over, but I notice you have an outwritten number now.
- 36:01Gavin: All right.
- 36:01Gavin: I'm gonna go, hmm, hmm.
- 36:05Gavin: All right, I have my number.
- 36:09Gavin: I have my number.
- 36:11Aaron: Tell tell the lovely people at home what you think of this one.
- 36:17Gavin: I gave this a 90.
- 36:19Gavin: I think this.
- 36:22Gavin: See, now he's gonna go write it down.
- 36:24Gavin: No, I did.
- 36:24Gavin: I wrote your number down.
- 36:25Gavin: Okay, all right.
- 36:26Gavin: Makes it easier when I'm doing editing later to remember what all I needed.
- 36:29Gavin: This is uh really good, really great, excellent, even.
- 36:36Gavin: It's different than most old Forresters, so I think the the off profile in a good way on this, not that normal profile for Old Forrester is bad because I really love Old Forester.
- 36:50Gavin: Um, but this is just different, it's unique.
- 36:53Gavin: Um, I think the exclusivity ratches it up a little bit.
- 36:58Gavin: I always want one of these bottles every year, and I never get chosen.
- 37:03Gavin: And I was in Kentucky during the week that they announced, and I was like, I could have picked it up, like I'm here.
- 37:11Gavin: I was at I was at the restaurant right next door.
- 37:16Gavin: Like I'd have got up and left.
- 37:18Gavin: Uh I'd have got them from the table.
- 37:19Gavin: I was like so disappointed.
- 37:21Gavin: However, uh, I think if you have a chance to get this one, you gotta have it on your shelf.
- 37:27Aaron: Yeah, so each year's obviously a different release.
- 37:30Aaron: Flavor profiles will vary slightly.
- 37:33Aaron: They are they are a specialty one-off.
- 37:35Aaron: I I don't know how close this comes to every other year of birthday bourbon.
- 37:41Aaron: One of the problems of it being so hard to get hold of is I don't have a bunch of years of birthday bourbon, right?
- 37:46Aaron: All right.
- 37:47Aaron: For me, I agree, exclusivity, the story of birthday bourbon certainly helps the score.
- 37:55Aaron: I think that sometimes when you you get something that is a little off profile, it makes you be like, oh, I that's not what I expected.
- 38:05Aaron: And so thus it feels a little lesser.
- 38:07Aaron: But I I I like that this one is different from the rest of the old Foresters.
- 38:12Aaron: I was this close to an 88.
- 38:16Aaron: It was that finish that gave me pushed me to an 87.
- 38:20Aaron: So I'm in an 87.
- 38:21Aaron: You mean pulled you to an 87?
- 38:23Aaron: Absolutely a wonderful bourbon to have.
- 38:27Aaron: Um, it just that one thing just missed the tick.
- 38:31Aaron: Just listen, listen.
- 38:32Aaron: I'm with Gavin.
- 38:34Aaron: If you get an opportunity to get a pour of this, get a pour of this.
- 38:37Aaron: This is fun stuff.
- 38:38Aaron: Um, when else are you gonna get a chance, right?
- 38:42Gavin: And old forester, if you're out there listening and you want if you've got a couple extra cases you don't know what to do with, let us know.
- 38:49Gavin: Just bring it on in, brother.
- 38:51Aaron: All right, recap.
- 38:53Aaron: Old Forester's birthday bourb, uh, birthday bourbon 2022 release.
- 39:01Aaron: Aaron gives it an 87, Gavin gives it a whopping 90.
- 39:05Aaron: 90.
- 39:06Aaron: All right, so we're trying to move things along.
- 39:09Aaron: New season, new us.
- 39:11Aaron: We're gonna try to be done in less than an hour and a half every time.
- 39:14Aaron: Doubt it.
- 39:14Aaron: Gavin tends to write a lot of fun questions.
- 39:18Aaron: All right, we end up talking.
- 39:19Aaron: Sorry, Gavin, you were given the task quintessential, the essence of birthday in a bottle.
- 39:27Aaron: Yes.
- 39:28Aaron: What did you pick for us, my friend?
- 39:31Gavin: When I think about here, I'm gonna clear this off and put this right here.
- 39:34Gavin: We might revisit that here in a few minutes, if you will.
- 39:38Gavin: Uh, when I think about birthday, birthdays, and celebrating, there's a couple things that I just feel like you can't have a birthday without.
- 39:51Aaron: Okay.
- 39:51Gavin: That is birthday cake and ice cream.
- 39:55Gavin: Cake and ice cream.
- 39:56Gavin: I a quintessential birthday pair.
- 39:59Gavin: Just so happens that our good friends over at Glenmorangie started a series a few years ago.
- 40:09Gavin: Uh, and the first release of that series was called a tail of cake.
- 40:17Gavin: Oh, an absolutely excellent bottle of scotch.
- 40:21Gavin: And then about four years after that, or five, they came out with a tail of ice cream.
- 40:28Gavin: Oh, so you're telling me you got us cake and ice cream for our birthday party?
- 40:34Gavin: And ice cream.
- 40:35Gavin: How great would that be?
- 40:36Gavin: That would be awesome.
- 40:37Gavin: I like I could not find us a bottle of a tail of cake.
- 40:47Aaron: Yeah, I was gonna say that's that's a tough one because that's five, six, seven years old now.
- 40:55Gavin: Yeah, probably.
- 40:56Gavin: 2020 is when that one came out.
- 40:59Gavin: Okay, when that was released.
- 41:01Gavin: So I did what I could and I sourced us what we have left.
- 41:08Gavin: Source dust.
- 41:09Gavin: I sourced us.
- 41:10Gavin: Source dust?
- 41:12Gavin: You mean you took it off the shelf baggage?
- 41:16Gavin: Source dust.
- 41:17Gavin: Yeah, I sourced us a bottle of what we have left.
- 41:23Gavin: Good lord.
- 41:23Gavin: Let's see.
- 41:24Gavin: So we're we're sipping tails, a tail, a tail of ice cream, a tail of ice cream, and that is a hefty pour.
- 41:33Gavin: Oh, snakes.
- 41:34Gavin: You're gonna need it.
- 41:37Aaron: How can you go wrong with a glass of ice cream?
- 41:40Gavin: Yes, exactly.
- 41:41Gavin: I mean, it is amazing.
- 41:47Aaron: So I actually hold up before we go on.
- 41:49Aaron: I think it is important.
- 41:50Aaron: Switch yours.
- 41:51Aaron: Sometimes people give us bottles as gifts, whether it's to celebrate a birthday or not.
- 41:59Aaron: But give us a bottle saying, hey, why don't you guys taste this one the air?
- 42:03Aaron: This one was a gift I received from a good friend of ours, Luke.
- 42:06Aaron: Not to be put on the air.
- 42:09Aaron: He just gave it to me for Christmas.
- 42:11Aaron: Um, and and I obviously have enjoyed a great deal of this bottle.
- 42:17Aaron: Um, this one's an excellent one.
- 42:20Gavin: Well, let's get to a little bit.
- 42:23Gavin: All right.
- 42:23Gavin: Did you run down the give us the stats on more?
- 42:26Gavin: Yeah, so this is uh the 2024 release.
- 42:31Gavin: Come.
- 42:32Gavin: So the first one was in 2020, uh, which was a Tale of Cake.
- 42:36Gavin: Then they had in 2021 uh a Tale of Winter, the next one 2022 was a Tale of Forest, and then Tale of Tokyo, and then a Tale of Ice Cream, and then the most recent release was a Tale of Spice.
- 42:51Gavin: This specific bottle is no age statement, is uh 46% ABV, and because it's from Glenmorangie Highland Single Malt.
- 43:04Gavin: This bottle retails roughly around 100 bucks.
- 43:09Gavin: If you can still find it out there, since this was yeah, two releases back now.
- 43:17Aaron: I uh I too a little cat out of the back.
- 43:22Aaron: I too thought of cake and ice cream because I thought that to be honest, part of me had kind of forgotten about the birthday bourbon setting up there and how perfect that would work, and so it wasn't until I went digging for cake because I knew I had ice cream.
- 43:34Aaron: I was like, perfect, I'll go find cake.
- 43:35Aaron: Um yeah, I did a great deal of internet research trying to find somebody that still had a bottle of cake that we could get.
- 43:43Aaron: Um, and those who still had bottles were awfully proud of them.
- 43:49Aaron: Yes, yes, certainly more proud than I felt was justified.
- 43:54Aaron: Yeah, I even went to the trouble of reaching out to people at Glenmorangie saying, hey, if Any chance you could help me find a bottle.
- 44:02Aaron: No luck.
- 44:05Gavin: Well, you just didn't try hard enough.
- 44:07Gavin: I'm just kidding.
- 44:07Gavin: No, no, I couldn't have tried harder.
- 44:09Gavin: I could have tried harder.
- 44:10Gavin: I I couldn't.
- 44:12Gavin: I too tried to find a t cake.
- 44:15Gavin: And I too came up empty-handed.
- 44:17Gavin: I'm not suggesting I would have been successful.
- 44:20Aaron: I'm just saying I could have tried harder.
- 44:25Gavin: So this bottle uh is essentially a marriage of the traditional Glenmorangie single malt, and it's finished in a virgin oak toasted.
- 44:41Gavin: Sorry, a toasted virgin oak barrel.
- 44:44Gavin: Um, and what that will do is essentially help pull out some extra vanillins, and thus we get a Tale of Ice Cream created by the director of whiskey creation, which I think is an absolutely wonderful title, and if I could have a title someday, I would love for it to be uh the director of whiskey creation.
- 45:17Aaron: I would actually be willing to take a middle management role and be like the support to whiskey production, the liaison of whiskey production, if you will.
- 45:33Aaron: Kind of like I think I don't need to be the director.
- 45:36Aaron: I mean, yes, it would be an honor to be the director, but I I think that's what you're doing enough.
- 45:41Gavin: I'm humble enough now.
- 45:42Gavin: That's what you and I are.
- 45:43Gavin: We're liaisons, yeah, but it's unpaid.
- 45:46Gavin: Unpaid.
- 45:47Gavin: We're unpaid engines, is what we are.
- 45:48Gavin: Um, so yeah, this is a collaboration um from uh Dr.
- 45:52Gavin: Bill Lumsden and Master Blender Jillian McDonald.
- 45:58Aaron: So you gotta love that.
- 46:00Aaron: Yeah.
- 46:01Aaron: Alright.
- 46:02Aaron: We spent what too much time in the first half talking about beard stories and in the history of birthdays.
- 46:14Aaron: I want to know more about birthdays.
- 46:21Aaron: I guess I know whatever story you have about how great a birthday's gonna be.
- 46:25Aaron: I I've got 10 extra birthdays on you, so I'm gonna have better stories, like for sure.
- 46:30Aaron: But I I I kind of want to know, like, when you when you close your eyes and you think back on iconic birthday moments.
- 46:39Aaron: What is that thing?
- 46:41Aaron: Was it the pony like mom got a pony and you guys got to ride around the pony at a birthday party?
- 46:49Aaron: Like, was it uh were you a swimming pool party as a kid?
- 46:53Aaron: Like what was what was the Gavin birthday existence all about?
- 46:59Gavin: Uh are we talking any age or does this have to be when I was when I was younger?
- 47:04Aaron: I mean, if you rode ponies at 37 around the yard, like tell us that story.
- 47:10Gavin: No, I I think um ever since I got married, um okay, maybe not all the stories.
- 47:18Gavin: Uh my wife and I have really started giving each other experiences for gifts.
- 47:28Gavin: See, I I should have clarified this.
- 47:31Aaron: I'm a mom.
- 47:31Aaron: Go ahead and shut it off right now.
- 47:34Gavin: There's no need for you to listen to this.
- 47:36Gavin: And they were great.
- 47:42Aaron: My my first my first thought was like, did you did you come back with a slide deck that you wanted to show over all your friends?
- 47:48Aaron: Like, were you uh were you on slides on vacation?
- 47:55Gavin: Um no, but I I think when we we celebrated my birthday when we were in Scotland, and I think that experience was phenomenal when we lived there.
- 48:07Gavin: Um, like that is one of the birthdays that just sticks out to me um in that experience.
- 48:13Gavin: And I think it was just for all that it was, we were living in Scotland, and uh we I believe we took a train from where we lived in Aberdeen to Edinburgh, and then we just spent the whole kind of weekend time frame there.
- 48:29Gavin: And I remember uh this also kind of leads into like a birthday gift.
- 48:34Gavin: Um at the time when we walked into the to the castle, off to like we walked through like the bridge, and then you're kind of where you can buy tickets, and then off to the side, there was um kind of this whole setup, and all it was was all of the family, like uh you could go get your family um coat of arms, oh kind of uh decorations and things like that.
- 49:00Gavin: And they had these ladies that were hand stitching um your like a family coat of arms, and they were using like legitimately gold thread and silver that's like real gold.
- 49:16Aaron: It was the it was the golden hair of some fair maiden, exactly.
- 49:19Gavin: Yeah, and I saw it and I was like, that's actually really cool.
- 49:25Gavin: Um and and like man so you you have a hand-sewn family crest, yeah, yeah, it's pretty the with like um real gold thread.
- 49:37Aaron: I was gonna tell the story of the time I got a tackle box for Christmas for my birthday.
- 49:41Gavin: Yeah, well, that's still fun.
- 49:43Gavin: But but what's fun about it is like I really wanted it, but it was so expensive, and I was like, no, I'm not gonna do that.
- 49:50Gavin: So we went through the castle, we did the tour, we did all the things, and then we came out, and my wife's like, go get it.
- 49:58Gavin: We're we're getting it.
- 49:59Gavin: It's her birthday.
- 50:00Gavin: I was like, oh gosh, this is so cool.
- 50:03Gavin: Because um one thing about my wife is she's very frugal um engineer, and so that's the ongoing joke.
- 50:12Aaron: Yes, make that sound like that's a bad thing, it's not a bad thing, keeps me in check.
- 50:17Gavin: Somebody's got to.
- 50:18Gavin: I know, because you sure's helped out.
- 50:20Aaron: It's not my job.
- 50:21Aaron: It's not my job.
- 50:23Aaron: My job is to go out and have fun.
- 50:25Aaron: Her job is to rein you back in.
- 50:30Gavin: Um, but when she was like, Yeah, I want you to have that, like that's such a cool thing, and we're here, let's do it.
- 50:37Gavin: Um, so that was just a really fun experience being uh in Scotland, going to the castle, no um, getting getting the coat of arms.
- 50:46Gavin: So to me, that is my my best.
- 50:50Aaron: Hard, hard to beat that as a birthday present with your tackle box.
- 50:56Aaron: Go for it.
- 50:56Aaron: No, no, so you're 10 years above me.
- 50:58Aaron: To your point, like when I think of birthday parties, I think of like little kid birthday parties, but I'll actually say I've had much bigger and more extravagant birthday parties as an adult than I ever did as a kid, right?
- 51:11Aaron: Um do tell.
- 51:12Aaron: Yeah, we were uh growing up, we were the you can have four or five friends over, and you got to stay up as late as you wanted and sleep on sleeping bags on the living room floor.
- 51:22Aaron: Like that was that was the height of awesomeness as a kid.
- 51:27Aaron: Um, like mom would order pizza, like, oh my god, like this is the greatest thing ever.
- 51:32Aaron: I yeah, so in the world of like crazy gifts, the thing that stuck with me, um I my gut feel is I was 10.
- 51:43Aaron: I could be off by a year or two, but I remember that mom and dad got me a tackle box uh and a classic Zebco 33 uh fishing rod.
- 51:52Aaron: Solid.
- 51:53Aaron: And um, when I opened the tackle box, inside each individual lure had been wrapped as well, so you had to open all of it.
- 52:03Aaron: Um I've I've been for years the driving force for wrapping gifts in our house.
- 52:11Aaron: Uh to me, part of the fun of receiving a gift is the excitement of tearing into the packaging.
- 52:21Aaron: Gift bags are the laziest thing I've ever seen.
- 52:25Aaron: Um, yeah, my wife's like, I've already got gift bags, just throw stuff in bags and just set it out.
- 52:29Aaron: I was like, that there is no fun in that.
- 52:33Aaron: Like that, there's no joy in that.
- 52:35Aaron: It's the excitement, it's the noise, it's the mess, it's the chaos on the floor when you're done.
- 52:41Aaron: Like all of that goes into the experience.
- 52:43Aaron: And so, yeah, going through and unwrapping each individual uh fishing lure and the role of swivels and weights and all that, all of it.
- 52:53Aaron: Um, I distinctly remember.
- 52:54Aaron: Um, yeah, so obviously in the whiskey world, my adult birthdays have been much more um impactful.
- 53:03Aaron: Um my wife loves to throw a party.
- 53:10Aaron: Unfortunately, she is married to a husband who really enjoys a puzzle or a riddle, and so cracking the code and figuring out the party beforehand is some of my enjoyment.
- 53:23Aaron: Um, and I don't think she fully understands how bad she is at giving clues when she doesn't mean to, right?
- 53:31Aaron: Like I think if she was trying to give clues, she'd be great at it.
- 53:35Aaron: She's trying to not give clues, and I'm picking up on all sorts of stuff.
- 53:38Aaron: She has actually gotten to the point now where she starts asking questions completely unrelated to things in an effort to throw, knowing I'm picking up on clues, she's gonna throw clues out there that I don't know.
- 53:50Aaron: Um, just to to get me off the scent of the trail.
- 53:55Aaron: Uh, but what I will say is when I turned 40, that was the whiskey party.
- 54:00Aaron: That was the party that started it all.
- 54:02Aaron: Um, everyone that attended that party brought me a bottle of whiskey, and my collection went from six bottles to 46 bottles in one evening, and it has never slowed down since then.
- 54:15Aaron: It has absolutely just skyrocketed ever since.
- 54:17Aaron: So, what you're saying is it true.
- 54:18Aaron: Well, this is her fault.
- 54:19Aaron: This is her fault.
- 54:21Aaron: I would have been happy drinking, I was gonna say, like apple crown or something.
- 54:28Aaron: I I know I couldn't have stayed happy that way.
- 54:30Aaron: No, I I could have been happy drinking light beer for the rest of my life, but she opened this Pandora's box, and yet here we sit now.
- 54:42Aaron: Literally in a whiskey box, knee deep in whiskey, literally, um, yeah.
- 54:49Aaron: I and and and this last birthday party, uh absolutely phenomenal night.
- 54:55Aaron: Um, also whiskey themed, seems fitting.
- 54:59Aaron: Um, and I will say she once again knocked it out of the park.
- 55:02Aaron: Most everything I had figured up um until um Gavin here comes strutting through the door with a bottle of 50-year-old scotch, um, followed by a bagpiper playing playing him into the room.
- 55:18Aaron: And I was like, yeah, that that's single-handedly the biggest and best entrance I have ever seen anybody ever take, ever at any event.
- 55:28Aaron: Um, and so I've I've started looking into how much would it cost to just have a bagpiper follow me everywhere and just play me into every room.
- 55:37Aaron: Um, I like you have those moments, and I maybe this is a good question.
- 55:43Aaron: Are you a surprise party guy?
- 55:47Aaron: Like the jump out, ah, surprise, or do you want to be part of the planning of your parties?
- 55:54Aaron: I would prefer.
- 55:58Gavin: Um, I think for me, a surprise, I think would be fun.
- 56:04Aaron: Um, well, surprise, we're not getting you a party this year.
- 56:09Gavin: I think it would be fun because I don't think I've ever really had a surprise party.
- 56:14Gavin: We've because my birthday also falls really close to a holiday, so we always just take trips.
- 56:24Gavin: So that's that's the you know, we just have the roads.
- 56:28Gavin: We're on the road, we're da da da da da da.
- 56:29Gavin: Come.
- 56:29Gavin: So if we did a party, it would have to be either before or after, right?
- 56:35Gavin: And so it just kind of it's oh, it's a weird time.
- 56:38Aaron: So this is a question.
- 56:39Aaron: I and I want I want people at home to to voice their thoughts, and I I want to hear yours as well.
- 56:45Aaron: Is it a bigger surprise to have the party be a week or two before your birthday or a week or two after your birthday?
- 57:00Aaron: I would have to think that the party after is a much bigger shock to the system.
- 57:04Gavin: Yeah,
- 57:04Aaron: Did not see that coming at all.
- 57:06Gavin: Yeah, I think because if you're sad about it that you didn't have a party,
- 57:10Aaron: Just be so crushed that no one gave a shit about your birthday.
- 57:18Gavin: Right?
- 57:18Aaron: And then it's like moping on the couch and then the next day everybody shows up and you're like, holy, did not see that coming.
- 57:25Gavin: I was not prepared for that.
- 57:28Aaron: I too enjoy a surprise because surprising me with something proves to be somewhat of a challenge, right?
- 57:37Aaron: Um this last surprise, surprise party.
- 57:41Aaron: Uh, my wife uh left the house and said that my daughter would be bringing me to dinner, and we got in the car and she says, Do you know where we're going?
- 57:50Aaron: I was like, I got a pretty good idea.
- 57:52Aaron: And she's like, What?
- 57:53Aaron: I was like, Well, first off, we didn't head towards town, which would be where all of the restaurants are.
- 57:59Aaron: We're heading towards a neighborhood.
- 58:00Aaron: So I know we're not going to a restaurant for dinner.
- 58:03Aaron: Two, your mother told me it was okay that if I wore the kilt tonight.
- 58:09Aaron: And that tells me we're doing something scotch and whiskey themed.
- 58:13Aaron: My wife's not a big fan of wandering around town while I wear my kilt.
- 58:17Aaron: She's completely wrong.
- 58:20Aaron: But I still love her anyways.
- 58:22Aaron: Um, yeah, so by the time we had gotten out of our neighborhood and headed um off to the party, I had pretty well told my daughter everything.
- 58:33Aaron: I'll say, I didn't guess the bagpiper.
- 58:37Aaron: That was uh that was not on my that was not on my birthday bingo card.
- 58:42Gavin: We knew that that was gonna be the one thing that you probably would not have guessed.
- 58:49Aaron: No, I I could not boy was your wife right.
- 58:53Aaron: Oh my god.
- 58:54Aaron: I I've seen the pictures and the videos of me just grinning from ear to ear.
- 58:59Aaron: Like I could not stop.
- 59:00Gavin: It was grinning ear to ear.
- 59:01Gavin: The highlight of the night.
- 59:04Aaron: Um, I you know, here's the beauty of a birthday party.
- 59:10Aaron: Unlike every other holiday that occurs throughout the year, this is the one that's about you.
- 59:16Aaron: This isn't a Christmas party or a Thanksgiving get together, and which people feel either one, obligated to go to, or two, they're just excited about the fact that it is a holiday party and not necessarily like they'd have gone to any holiday party that Friday.
- 59:35Aaron: You just happen to be the one that they're at.
- 59:37Aaron: No, on a birthday party, they're there because they like you.
- 59:41Aaron: Sometimes that can feel a bit overwhelming to people, and that you feel like you have to be the center of attention and entertain.
- 59:50Aaron: And I I will say is as I've gotten older, again, the expertise, the more mature, the experience of having more birthday parties is my job is not to entertain people at my birthday party.
- 1:00:01Gavin: That's right.
- 1:00:01Aaron: Right?
- 1:00:01Aaron: That their job is to entertain themselves.
- 1:00:04Aaron: My job is just to appreciate the fact that they took time the other day to come and be a part of uh something with me.
- 1:00:10Aaron: I it and maybe one of the the sillier things that had not clicked to me until I was reading this the other day that I thought was kind of poignant.
- 1:00:17Aaron: Um when somebody toasts to you, you are not to hold a glass.
- 1:00:25Aaron: Everyone else is to raise the glass to you, you are just to sit and accept the toast on their behalf.
- 1:00:37Aaron: You don't raise the glass back to them.
- 1:00:39Aaron: And I was like, it makes sense, it's just not how I've ever like somebody's like, hey, hey, the so-and-so, you're like, Oh yeah, here let me get a glass, and like, no, you're they raise and then you raise.
- 1:00:50Aaron: Yeah, like you're just a sit there and appreciate the moment.
- 1:00:54Aaron: And I was like, yeah, that's kind of a cool concept.
- 1:00:57Gavin: The people that don't know that though, that are accustomed to you toasting back, it would feel odd.
- 1:01:04Gavin: They'd feel that'd be real odd.
- 1:01:07Aaron: Nerve of that guy.
- 1:01:08Aaron: What a jerk.
- 1:01:09Aaron: He didn't even he didn't even like this.
- 1:01:12Aaron: I think we need to talk about the whiskey and the glass because I promised people prematurely, but I promised people we wouldn't spend forever on an episode.
- 1:01:21Aaron: I my goal, my goal is by the time we get to the end of season three, we figured out how to get this back to an hour.
- 1:01:26Aaron: That's my goal.
- 1:01:27Gavin: I just have to say, as we dive into this.
- 1:01:31Aaron: No chance.
- 1:01:33Gavin: We set out originally to do like a 30 or 45 minute episode, and I don't think we ever hit that.
- 1:01:41Aaron: No, no, I actually went back and rewatched episode one.
- 1:01:43Aaron: It was like 38 minutes, and I was like, how did we get done so fast?
- 1:01:48Aaron: I think we were just so I think we just did whiskey, we didn't really talk about anything else, and we were so ill-prepared to speak.
- 1:01:58Aaron: Now I can't stop.
- 1:02:00Aaron: I can't stop.
- 1:02:01Aaron: All right, your bottle.
- 1:02:04Aaron: I go first.
- 1:02:05Aaron: On the nose, immediately, this is not bourbon, right?
- 1:02:12Aaron: There is there is a there is a light malty note to it.
- 1:02:16Aaron: This is much more light and floral, and it's just core.
- 1:02:20Aaron: This doesn't have the big, bold, strong oak flavors, it doesn't have the big bold fruit flavors.
- 1:02:26Aaron: This is much more light Highland scotch.
- 1:02:31Aaron: But two, on the nose, I get like vanilla butter cream icing.
- 1:02:38Aaron: Right?
- 1:02:39Aaron: I get it's it doesn't smell like vanilla ice cream, but I get vanilla and cream on the nose.
- 1:02:49Aaron: In a different way.
- 1:02:51Aaron: I agree with that.
- 1:02:54Aaron: I I wrote you gotta stop writing so big, so I can't read that.
- 1:02:58Aaron: I wrote that down on my own.
- 1:03:01Gavin: I wrote vanilla cupcake, like the vanilla cream, like not the whipped cream.
- 1:03:06Gavin: I want buttercream, like the vanilla buttercream and stuff that's gonna ride your teeth.
- 1:03:10Gavin: It should be off-white, not white.
- 1:03:12Gavin: Yes, yeah.
- 1:03:14Gavin: Um, I also thought that because I've had this before and had several pours of it, I was already expecting that vanilla cupcake kind of nose to it.
- 1:03:26Gavin: I think going back and revisiting this for this time, I got raisins on the nose.
- 1:03:32Gavin: Really?
- 1:03:33Aaron: Yeah.
- 1:03:34Aaron: Like the golden green raisins or like red raisins?
- 1:03:39Gavin: Like I was gonna say uh like the red raisins, like in the sun-dried or whatever.
- 1:03:45Gavin: Sun made.
- 1:03:45Gavin: Sun-made.
- 1:03:46Gavin: The little box of raisins.
- 1:03:47Gavin: Yeah, just just so slight.
- 1:03:50Aaron: You know, a a woefully underappreciated version of the raisin was the sun-made green raisins that they were like the golden.
- 1:04:00Aaron: Like, oh, those were so delicious.
- 1:04:02Aaron: Nothing like a red raisin, though.
- 1:04:04Aaron: Yeah, I you know, I don't know if I get it.
- 1:04:07Aaron: I I mean, I I'm not gonna say you don't.
- 1:04:10Aaron: That's not fair, but don't tell my sniffer what it gets.
- 1:04:14Gavin: Yeah, I don't know if I get red raisin or like a dark red raisin.
- 1:04:18Gavin: It wasn't so pronounced, but it was there's just a slight raisin-y note to it.
- 1:04:24Aaron: It's got a I might I might say a bit of bread pudding kind of nose to it.
- 1:04:30Gavin: All right, right.
- 1:04:31Gavin: I mean, we're we're leaning towards that a little bit.
- 1:04:33Aaron: Yeah, it tastes like they picked the raisins out of the bread pudding.
- 1:04:36Aaron: Of course.
- 1:04:37Aaron: Then I'll give you that.
- 1:04:38Aaron: I'll give you that.
- 1:04:39Aaron: Of course.
- 1:04:40Aaron: All right, on the palate.
- 1:04:41Aaron: So on the palate, actually get some light berry notes.
- 1:04:46Aaron: Like, I almost get strawberry, but not not like not like an actual red ripe strawberry, but like the pink ice cream strawberry.
- 1:05:00Gavin: Pink, okay.
- 1:05:01Gavin: Like your like a metropolitan or whatever.
- 1:05:04Aaron: Neopolitan.
- 1:05:04Aaron: Neopolitan
- 1:05:05Gavin: Metropolitan?
- 1:05:06Aaron: No, no, it could be metric.
- 1:05:07Aaron: I mean, you could be you could be eating it in the city for sure.
- 1:05:11Gavin: Uh all right, all right.
- 1:05:13Gavin: Um I think on this, on the palette, I put peaches and cream.
- 1:05:19Gavin: I think there's a peach note that shows up.
- 1:05:22Gavin: Yeah, like that.
- 1:05:24Aaron: Like I don't think we're that far off on the light fruits.
- 1:05:27Aaron: Um, like if if you just had apricot, I might have also bought apricot.
- 1:05:31Aaron: Yeah, no, I I it's it's interesting though, because it doesn't carry to the finish.
- 1:05:42Aaron: The finish to me, like here's where I get vanilla again.
- 1:05:47Aaron: And I get a hint of like that kind of I was gonna say milk chocolate, but it's not milk chocolate in its traditional sense.
- 1:05:58Aaron: Did you ever as a kid?
- 1:05:59Aaron: Go to the like the space museum and they had the dehydrated ice cream.
- 1:06:04Aaron: Uh like dipping dots?
- 1:06:06Aaron: No, dipping dots are like frozen little pellets.
- 1:06:10Aaron: I'm talking like the like room temperature dehydrated chunk of ice cream that just dissolves on your tongue.
- 1:06:17Aaron: Yeah, it was like it was astronaut ice cream or something.
- 1:06:21Aaron: The chocolate version of that very much tastes like malted chocolates, like a malted milk ball.
- 1:06:28Aaron: Okay.
- 1:06:29Aaron: Kind of thing.
- 1:06:30Aaron: I get that on the finish.
- 1:06:32Aaron: So kind of completes out the Neapolitan thing that you you threw out there earlier.
- 1:06:37Aaron: Um, yeah, the vanilla comes back in a in a very creamy custard kind of way.
- 1:06:44Aaron: Um, not not quite as over the top as like a vanilla pudding.
- 1:06:51Aaron: But yeah, vanilla cream, a little bit of that malted, malted milk ball.
- 1:07:01Gavin: Uh for me, I went a little different direction on this one.
- 1:07:05Gavin: Uh, on the finish.
- 1:07:06Gavin: I think there's a bit of like a lemon cream to it.
- 1:07:09Gavin: So if you took that buttercream vanilla that I got on the nose, but then there's a citrus zestiness to it on the finish.
- 1:07:19Gavin: And so you get like a lemon cream.
- 1:07:22Gavin: I think that's there's a sharpness that I think that the I don't know if I get lemon, that the finish brings.
- 1:07:30Gavin: And I think that's just the dryingness of it, but the the the sharpness, I think there's a citrus lemon.
- 1:07:36Aaron: So I think it's time to give it a score.
- 1:07:41Aaron: Numbers.
- 1:07:42Aaron: Do you have a number written down?
- 1:07:43Aaron: Nope.
- 1:07:44Aaron: Get to writing.
- 1:07:44Aaron: I'm already done over here.
- 1:07:46Aaron: Get to getting.
- 1:07:47Aaron: Get to getting.
- 1:07:48Aaron: I know what you're gonna do.
- 1:07:49Aaron: You're gonna write down one higher than my number, so I can't give it to you until I see you.
- 1:07:52Aaron: Put your pen back down.
- 1:07:54Aaron: Alright.
- 1:07:55Aaron: Uh, let's see.
- 1:07:56Aaron: Just put one more than me.
- 1:07:58Aaron: I'm not looking at yours, so I don't know.
- 1:08:00Aaron: I actually covered it with the pins.
- 1:08:02Aaron: Um I'm I'm on to you.
- 1:08:05Aaron: I'm on to you.
- 1:08:06Aaron: All right.
- 1:08:06Aaron: I think you're in a second I'm gonna need a splash of this, though.
- 1:08:10Gavin: All right.
- 1:08:10Aaron: I I'm gonna I'm gonna make this weird thing where my number from the first one to the second one actually goes down just a little bit.
- 1:08:22Aaron: But I would say of the two, I think I'd actually drink the Glenmorangie more often than the old Forester.
- 1:08:30Aaron: Uh-oh.
- 1:08:31Aaron: Um, I think what you can do flavor-wise with a scotch is a little bit bigger, so I expect a little bit more out of the scotch, so the scales aren't exactly the same.
- 1:08:44Aaron: So, this one comes in at an 85 for me.
- 1:08:48Aaron: I think this is very much in the wheelhouse of have a bottle, right?
- 1:08:52Aaron: For sure.
- 1:08:53Aaron: It is tasty, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
- 1:08:58Aaron: There's also nothing about the bottle that I I have to have.
- 1:09:04Aaron: Like, this is not a right home.
- 1:09:06Aaron: Oh my god, have you had did you try the whatever?
- 1:09:08Aaron: Like, it's not there, right?
- 1:09:10Aaron: Part of this may just be sheer availability, right?
- 1:09:15Aaron: When when this came out, you could go buy as much as this off the shelf as you wanted, right?
- 1:09:20Aaron: And birthday bourbon doesn't meet that criteria, right?
- 1:09:24Aaron: Um, so yeah, to me, an 85, an absolute right down the middle of would love to have a bottle.
- 1:09:33Gavin: Well I I agree with you.
- 1:09:35Gavin: I came down a few points.
- 1:09:36Gavin: I put this at an 87.
- 1:09:38Gavin: I agree.
- 1:09:40Gavin: I think it is something that I want on the shelf.
- 1:09:44Gavin: Um, I think they're the first time I had this, I was just enthralled with it.
- 1:09:53Gavin: Like I loved it.
- 1:09:54Gavin: I remember the first time I had a pour of it, I think was at our buddy um, or maybe it was here, or maybe it was at our buddy Andy's house.
- 1:10:01Gavin: I can't remember.
- 1:10:02Gavin: But I remember sitting down and having a pour with Andy, and I was just like, oh my god, this is amazing! Like it tastes like peaches and cream.
- 1:10:10Gavin: It's it's it's it's ice cream, it's it's all of those things.
- 1:10:14Gavin: Um, and so I think that they did a really good job um pulling out those vanilla flavors and the the everything that culminates into making it a tail of ice cream.
- 1:10:25Gavin: So I think 87 for me.
- 1:10:28Aaron: Yeah, I I don't know when this will happen.
- 1:10:31Aaron: But the day where we finally get Bill, Dr.
- 1:10:34Aaron: Bill, on the show.
- 1:10:35Aaron: Oh, yes, I'm gonna ask, is this a this was the goal?
- 1:10:40Aaron: This was what you had in mind, and you barreled shooting for this, or is this you barreled stuff and as you begin tasting, you're like, I like this, it just needs a little bit of like how how do they how do they ultimately get to here?
- 1:10:52Aaron: Because this absolutely reminds me of ice cream, yeah, right for sure.
- 1:10:57Aaron: How much of that is the power of persuasion?
- 1:10:59Aaron: Like you named it ice cream, and now I taste ice cream, versus like, did he start saying, I want one that harkens to ice cream, and then created one with that in mind, or did he take whiskies, start tasting, was like, kind of it's over ice cream.
- 1:11:18Aaron: I got an idea.
- 1:11:19Aaron: Let's let's do an ice cream release, right?
- 1:11:21Aaron: So here's the problem.
- 1:11:23Aaron: You said it yourself, you wanted cake and ice cream.
- 1:11:28Aaron: I said I went looking for cake and ice cream, and I realized it wasn't gonna happen.
- 1:11:38Aaron: So I thought to myself, what does a guy do if you can get ice cream, but you can't get cake?
- 1:11:46Aaron: So I went and got us some cake.
- 1:11:54Aaron: Now, as a guy who says everything needs to be on point in a theme, oh I was gonna say, you know, no, you know, you don't have to eat it with your hands.
- 1:12:05Aaron: I got online from our good buddies over at Bent Distilling.
- 1:12:11Aaron: Oh, yes, they offer whiskey cakes that you can order online and they will overnight them to you.
- 1:12:18Aaron: So I ordered us a Bendt Distilling's whiskey cake, and I thought you can't celebrate a birthday if you don't have cake.
- 1:12:30Aaron: So I thought it would be fun.
- 1:12:33Aaron: One, just try the cake, right?
- 1:12:35Aaron: I'm I'm excited to try it, haven't had a bite yet.
- 1:12:38Aaron: But then two, like I'm kind of curious.
- 1:12:40Aaron: Um, if we can quickly go through and say, like, I like this one, this one goes good with this.
- 1:12:45Aaron: So I I'll I'll talk for a minute, eat your cake so that way then we're not both chewing.
- 1:12:50Aaron: Cheers.
- 1:12:50Aaron: So I I'm not a baker by any means.
- 1:12:56Aaron: Are you sure?
- 1:12:56Aaron: Um, no, no, I'm not sure.
- 1:12:59Aaron: I might, I might run into the kitchen and be like, let's take our take a shot at cake, and then come by and go, some bitch, I'm a I'm a baker and didn't even know.
- 1:13:10Aaron: I may just have a hidden talent that the world is dying to get a hold of.
- 1:13:18Aaron: Um, but I'm excited.
- 1:13:20Aaron: I I don't know the inherent difference between rum cakes and whiskey cakes.
- 1:13:26Aaron: I'm assuming it has to do with whether or not it has rum and whiskey, but the rest of the cake making process may be identical.
- 1:13:34Aaron: What I do know is I cannot go on a Caribbean vacation and not come home with a rum cake because I really, really enjoy a liquor-soaked sweet bread.
- 1:13:48Aaron: Um, and I'm excited to try whiskey cake.
- 1:13:53Aaron: So now you've tried it with the bourbon.
- 1:13:56Aaron: I want to give you the opportunity, fresh bite, and the scotch.
- 1:14:01Aaron: I need to know which of those two is the one.
- 1:14:14Gavin: It's tough.
- 1:14:15Gavin: I short answer.
- 1:14:19Gavin: I think the birthday bourbon and the whiskey cake go really well together.
- 1:14:25Gavin: I think there's a richness that I think the pecans and the birthday bourbon really um just gel really well together.
- 1:14:40Gavin: I think sometimes pecans can be really can I have the bitter note to it?
- 1:14:45Gavin: These obviously don't, but I think there's a bit of that, like I want something that's gonna equalize out um when it comes to uh the pecans.
- 1:14:56Gavin: This, oh my gosh, the cake is delicious.
- 1:14:59Gavin: So two thumbs up um for Bendt Distilling's whiskey cake for sure.
- 1:15:07Gavin: But I think for me, the birthday bourbon wins out with this.
- 1:15:12Aaron: Yeah, I think I'm uh I'm I think I'm gonna agree with you.
- 1:15:15Aaron: I think the the rich, sweet, sugary whiskey flavor that shows up in the cake overwhelms the scotch.
- 1:15:26Aaron: Um I think you're left with just tasting the maltiness and you lose the ice cream sweetness and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:15:35Aaron: Whereas the bourbon has so much more of that already in it, it actually holds up.
- 1:15:41Aaron: Um yeah, I now I kind of want to go back to the pre-pour.
- 1:15:47Aaron: Oh, the pre-pour.
- 1:15:48Aaron: That's a good one, too.
- 1:15:49Aaron: I'll try to take a small bite so we can get it, we can get out of here before uh well before the tape runs out.
- 1:15:59Gavin: Well, thanks for hanging out with us, everyone.
- 1:16:03Aaron: This is a lot of fun.
- 1:16:05Aaron: I think the obvious thing would have been to to sing happy birthday to ourselves.
- 1:16:11Aaron: I don't I think we should save everybody that experience.
- 1:16:16Aaron: I don't know.
- 1:16:17Aaron: I think some people might enjoy that.
- 1:16:19Aaron: Oh man, that tastes like peanuts.
- 1:16:25Aaron: I get all sorts of peanut on that.
- 1:16:29Aaron: So for those who are keeping score at home, we didn't say it.
- 1:16:32Aaron: The pre-pour was Bardstown's origin series.
- 1:16:37Aaron: Origin series we did.
- 1:16:38Aaron: Um so all three.
- 1:16:43Aaron: Excellent.
- 1:16:44Aaron: So um here we set the first episode of season three with both Gavin and Aaron together.
- 1:16:56Aaron: Um, and we got to have cake and ice cream and birthday bourbon.
- 1:17:00Aaron: What an absolute wonderful way um to start up things again.
