Latest / STRONG / FSY Sept. Week 1: Why We Need Priesthood Power (feat. Devin Supertramp!)
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_03: Welcome to Strong, where we follow the For the Strength of Youth curriculum to help you get a little closer to Jesus Christ and a little more ready for what's ahead.
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: You've got the temple, a mission, and the life that you're building.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: I'm Kirby Hayborn.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: This week in your class, the For the Strength of Youth curriculum covers something big: priesthood keys and authority.
- 0:29SPEAKER_03: It's the power of God on earth that disappeared for centuries until he brought it back.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: This is why you can act in his name and receive his blessings right now.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: Before we get into it, let me tell you a story.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: There's a peak in Utah called Lone Peak.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: It's serious.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: It's an all-day hike.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: It's intense.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: I'd done it a few times in high school, and I got lost every single time.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: Now, when I was a senior, there was this girl that I wanted to impress.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: You know, how you do?
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: She loved the outdoors and she loved hiking.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: She'd always wanted to hike Lone Peak.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: So I told her, hey, I'm a master at Lone Peak.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: I've done it so many times.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: She asked if she could bring a friend, and I said, Yeah, of course, because I wanted to be a cool guy.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: So one morning, the three of us set out without a map, without a compass, with no training.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: And about two hours in, I confidently lost the trail, just like every other time.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: At one point, we ended up on a cliff and we had to grab a tree branch to shimmy around the trail, and she almost fell.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: She almost fell off this cliff.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Because we had wandered off the trail, it took us an extra four hours to get to the peak.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: When we made it to the summit, it was awesome.
- 1:53SPEAKER_03: We we took pictures and then we got lost coming down.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: You gotta understand, Lone Peak, the trail gets lost so quickly.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: You're over going over boulders.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I wasn't necessarily a bad guide.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: I just I lost the trail.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: That's what you do.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: So by the time I found the trail again, the sun was setting.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: There was no water, nobody had any water left, and the only food we had between the three of us was a peach that her friend had brought.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: One peach.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: We passed it around, and honestly, we savored every drop of juice like it was the last water on earth.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Because to us it was.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: We eventually made it back to the car and we were exhausted, dehydrated, and I was humiliated.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: And all I could think was I had no idea what I was doing up there.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: And someone almost got hurt because of it.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: Now here's the thing.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: I had been up to Lone Peak before.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: I'd done it a number of times, and I thought that that was enough.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: But knowing a trail and having the authority to lead someone safely, they're two different things.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: The priesthood is the authority and power of God given to people on earth.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: After Christ's apostles died, that authority was lost.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: It wasn't diminished, it wasn't weakened, it was lost entirely.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: And then God sent it back.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: So here is the question underneath all of it why do we even need the priesthood?
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: Couldn't a good person just be good on their own?
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: Well, here's the answer that the scriptures give.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: The priesthood is how God's actual power gets into your actual life.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: Let's look and see what the Lord says in Doctrine and Covenants, section 84, verses 20 and 21.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: It says, Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: Then 21, and without the ordinances thereof and the authority of the priesthood, the power of godliness is not manifest unto men in the flesh.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: Right there, God is telling you exactly how his power reaches you.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: It comes through ordinances, and ordinances require authority.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: That authority is the priesthood.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: And here's the part that matters for every single person watching or listening.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: It's whether you're a young man or a young woman.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: President Dallin H.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: Oaks taught that priesthood keys, priesthood ordinances, and priesthood authority pertain to women as well as men.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Anyone who's set apart to a calling under someone who holds priesthood keys is given authority from God to do that work.
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: So when we ask, why do we need the priesthood?
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: The answer is the same for all of us.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: So here's the gospel according to me, according to Kirby.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: I need the priesthood because through it I feel Heavenly Father's love.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: I feel his love for me, and I feel it for everybody around me.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Devin Supertramp and I, we learned what it's like to try to finish something when an important piece is missing.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: I am here with my best friend Devin Graham, aka Devin Supertramp, YouTuber extraordinaire, amazing human being, and also a husband, a father, and the most important, you are a young men's leader.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: Best thing ever.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: With the deacons.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Shout out to the deacons.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: So, Devin, we are here at this beautiful pond.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: It's local here where we live.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: Um, the locals say that if you can paddleboard, which is what we have here, huge paddleboard across this, then it's a rite of passage.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: And I thought there's no better person to paddleboard with than you.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: I know you had shoulder surgery, so I'm gonna do it all for us.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: We're gonna be on the same paddle.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: Well, I got help a little bit.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: You are the anchor to my soul.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: So are you ready to do it?
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: I'm ready to do it.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: Where's the paddle?
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: We don't have one.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: You can see how far we have left.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: I'm too tired.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: I feel it in my triceratops.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: I figure that much.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: I'm feeling it too, holding the camera.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: Turn around, are you okay?
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: You're doing all the work.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Battling the wind.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: We're not gonna make it.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Dev, we didn't do it.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: We didn't do it.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: We tried though.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I gave it everything I had.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: And so did I.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: Clearly.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: You did.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: You were doing a great job.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Um, it's I I know we could see where we needed to go.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Right in front of us, actually.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: Right in front of us.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: We didn't make it very far.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Um, but it seems like without the right tool, no matter how clearly we could see it, um we didn't have a chance.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: We didn't have a chance.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: And that's what we're talking about today.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: That it's uh the paddle that uh I forgot to bring is like the priesthood, right?
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Without the priesthood, without God's authority, then we can try as hard as we want to get to where we want to go, but it just doesn't work.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: I can paddle really hard, Devin paddles really hard.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Um but without without that authority, we're useless.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: We're useless, yeah.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: Devin, you're the greatest.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: I'm so glad you're my friend.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: We should come out on a time when one, it's not so windy, and two, um We have a paddle?
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: We have a paddle.
- 7:50SPEAKER_03: Always bring a paddle or use the proper authority.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: So all priesthood authority on the earth traces back to one person, Jesus Christ.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: The FSY pamphlet says it directly.
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: We're in section nine, this first under eternal truths, it says, every priesthood holder can trace his authority back to him.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: That means that none of this is invented by people.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: It's not a committee, it's not a tradition that somebody started, it is the authority of the Son of God given on his terms, and we trust his perfect knowledge in how he gives it.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: This authority has always belonged to him, and he has given it to his prophets all throughout history.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Adam had it, Moses had it, Peter had it, and in our day, Jesus Christ restored it again.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: Joseph Smith received priesthood keys from John the Baptist, from Peter, from Moses, Elias and Elijah.
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: The restoration was the Son of God sending his servants to return his authority to earth, and he still directs how that priesthood is used today.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: When Devin and I tried to cross the pond, we had no paddle, my fault.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: I forgot, but we could see exactly where we wanted to go.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: We gave it everything, and we couldn't get there because the one thing that actually moves you across the water wasn't there.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: The great thing is there were reformers and theologians and good-hearted believers who came before the restoration and they tried to cross that same water.
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: They gave it everything, they did remarkable things, but no one could supply what was missing.
- 9:31SPEAKER_03: Not because they weren't faithful enough.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: No, they were amazing, faithful men and women.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: It's because that peace wasn't theirs to restore.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Only God could put it back.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: And he did.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Do you know who this is for?
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: You, every one of you.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: The FSY pamphlet says it this way Because the priesthood was restored, you can receive ordinances and make covenants with God.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: That means baptism, the sacrament, temple ordinances.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: This is how the blessings of God reach you personally through these ordinances.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: That's why they are so important.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: And it goes further than just receiving.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: The pamphlet says that you can act in the name of God when you receive an assignment or calling from someone with authority.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: That's true for young women and young men alike.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: You are not standing on the sidelines waiting for a blessing.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: You are a participant.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: When you're set apart, you are given authority from God to do that work.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: The priesthood doesn't just bless some of God's children, it blesses all of them.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: And that means you.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: I'd like you to tell me about a time that you received a priesthood blessing or ordinance.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: What did it feel like?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: A couple weeks ago, I was lucky enough to go to Kenya, and I had just the most incredible experience.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: One morning I woke up and I could barely move.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: I've never felt anything like that.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: And I asked for a priesthood blessing, and one of my friends and one of the leaders uh gave me a priesthood blessing.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: And the second after they finished, I felt normal.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: I felt okay.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And I was so surprised.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: I didn't even expect it.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: So I I got up and walked around and had breakfast, and then it just hit me.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Like I just witnessed a miracle.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I was literally just blessed by God.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: It was the most incredible thing I've ever felt.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: And I was able to then continue serving.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: And I just want to say that pre sea blessings really mean a lot to me.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: They're so important and they can bless everyone.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: If you believe it can help, it really can.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: The FSY pamphlet teaches us under the section promised blessings.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Let's get there again.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: So I'm in section nine, and then I go to promised blessings.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: And it says, You will become an instrument in the Lord's hands.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Jesus Christ is your strength.
- 11:52SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Your service will help you draw closer to Him and bring you joy.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Now, every week on Strong, I want to answer a real question.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: It's the kind of question that maybe in your class or anywhere you might be discussing the gospel, maybe you're a little afraid to raise your hand and ask.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: Maybe because you're thinking that you're the only one that's wondering it, or or because maybe you're a little afraid of what the answer says about you.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna ask it for you.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: Here's the question.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: I've been baptized and I take the sacrament every week, but honestly, I don't feel anything.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: Does that mean it's not working for me?
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: Feeling and faith, they're not the same thing.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: The ordinance is real whether you feel it or not.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: The sacrament covenant is renewed whether your emotions confirm it or not.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: This is what's beautiful.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: When you make a covenant, the Heavenly Father keeps his end.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: The FSY pamphlet says you can trust that the ordinances you receive are authorized by Jesus Christ.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: Now I'll admit there are times that I felt distant from the Spirit, that I felt like I I don't have it in me to show up on Tuesday night to the youth activity.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: But I can honestly say that I've never regretted just showing up.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: When I take a step of faith over and over again, and then I look back, I can see where I've been blessed.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Feelings follow faithfulness over time.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: Not the other way around.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: Let me say that again.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: Feelings follow faithfulness over time.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: Scripture teaches us you receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Faith is action.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: So, my dear brothers and sisters, stay faithful.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Show up sincerely.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: And I promise that the feelings will come because they've come for me.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: Every time that you've shown up, especially when you've had nothing left to give, every time that you've knelt down and you felt like you were talking to the ceiling, he sees it, and he's calling out to you right now.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: I wrote this song from his perspective.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: He sees you showing up, so keep showing up, keep taking that one step toward his light.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: Because one step is enough.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: You've been here before, you've shown up every time, and you're wanting more.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: And you're wondering why.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: When it gets dark, hard to see when you wanna give up.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Keep your eyes on me.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: Are you giving?
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Are you done?
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Lift up your head, cause one step is enough, one step is enough.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: You can't see the shore, and the end isn't clear, and your heart is torn, and you've got nothing left.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: You fought through the fear, you've given your role, but you're still here when it gets time.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: You wanna keep your eyes on me?
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: Are you stepping up stepping?
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: One step is one step is one step is enough.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Keep your eyes on me when it gets dark and hard to see you wanna give up, keep your eyes on me, all you've given, all you've done, lift up your head, cause one step is enough when it gets dark and hard to see when you wanna give up, keep your eyes on me.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: All you done lift up your head, because one step is enough.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: One step is enough.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: Alright, now it's your move.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: This week I want you to accept one assignment or a calling that you've been given and do it like you represent Jesus Christ, because you do.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: Give him your best.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: Then I want you to write down one sentence.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: One sentence is enough.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Write down what that assignment is, and I want you to write down how you're going to show up for it.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: That's strong for this week.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: Remember, you are a beloved son or daughter of God, and he has a work for you to do.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: Go do it.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: I'd like to thank our sponsors, Jared and Holly Swain, for making Strong possible.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: Visit strongyoutfoundation.com for episodes and more.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: I'll see you next Tuesday.
