- 2:10All right, what's up everyone, welcome in to Inside the Hoosier
- 2:14Mind, brought to you by Military Broadcast Radio helping give
- 2:17veterans a voice, as well as Gunfighter Beard Co if you want
- 2:21great beard options. I know Joe has his kind of
- 2:23shaved into a nice little goatee there and I trimmed mine down
- 2:26from looking like a mainly, mainly like a guy who lives at a
- 2:30refrigerator box on the side of the highway, but that's
- 2:32perfectly OK. If you want great beard care
- 2:35products, check him out. He is a Marine out of South
- 2:37Carolina. All of his ingredients are
- 2:39locally sourced, all of the stuff locally made here in the
- 2:41US, and he gives, he gives great stuff.
- 2:44I am wearing the stuff currently.
- 2:45It's banana taffy, smells absolutely delicious.
- 2:48Makes me want to actually eat my beard even though I would
- 2:50probably gag at the texture of that.
- 2:53But nonetheless though, really good stuff.
- 2:56Well, we are back. We were almost to the end of
- 2:59July. And Joe, you know what that
- 3:01means. You know what?
- 3:01You know what happens next month?
- 3:03I assume the cats get a different flavor of beard cream.
- 3:08Yes, you're not wrong on that. But we get the tiny, tiny, tiny
- 3:12tiny little inkling of football starting next month.
- 3:17Real. Real football, because we have
- 3:19Technically, the preseason for the NFL technically kicks off
- 3:24next month, but we have our very first college football game of
- 3:28Week 0 happening next month as well with Kansas State taking up
- 3:32not Kansas State. What am I doing?
- 3:34TCU taking on the other purple team, taking on North Carolina
- 3:39in Ireland to start off Week 0 next month.
- 3:44So we're getting there. But in the meantime, we've had
- 3:47some kind of fresh hot news blowing in, especially because
- 3:53it's the summer. And what better way to fill the
- 3:55summer than with all the drama and all the debates in the
- 3:58entire world. We've got the Michigan athletic
- 4:01director stepping down. LeBron James has finally decided
- 4:05he wants to pick a team in like the worst possible way, but he's
- 4:09not ring chasing. But he's still the GOAT.
- 4:11Maybe not really question mark. And then we have the SEC media
- 4:17days concluded last week and now we have the Big 10 media days
- 4:23kicking off this week. But that led to a whole lot of
- 4:26questions for the SEC. But nonetheless, though, let's
- 4:30start with probably the first and the biggest question,
- 4:33though, of the Michigan athletic director, Ward Manuel stepping
- 4:38down at the end of this calendar year, given everything that
- 4:43happened with Jim Horribaugh, with Connor Stallions, I think
- 4:48they said 13 staffers on that Michigan staff they've had to
- 4:54cut or let go. And it just goes to show you
- 4:58that even though he has been the athletic director for Michigan
- 5:02since 2016, so going into his 10th year, that you can win a
- 5:08national championship in football within the last three
- 5:11years. And you can win a national
- 5:12championship in men's basketball last year, literally this past
- 5:17season. And it's not enough to save you
- 5:21from getting ousted as the athletic director.
- 5:23Joe, I know this is your favorite team.
- 5:26So this probably hits a little bit of a soft spot for, you
- 5:30know, you're crushed. But what's your thoughts?
- 5:34Did I guess, did he really deserve to?
- 5:36Basically, it's kind of like he's being ousted as the
- 5:39scapegoat or one of the scapegoats at the moment because
- 5:43of all the shenanigans. So two things to to add on to
- 5:46what you said, not only winning a national title, but then your
- 5:49winning head coach goes to the pros, doesn't want to state the
- 5:53program. So there it's kind of a red
- 5:55flag. And also, as much as I love
- 5:57dunking on the Harbaugh's and seeing how they're not allowed
- 6:00on campus for five years, which is, you know, not a great, you
- 6:04know, great thing for your, you know, national title winning
- 6:07coach to have their replacement was let go because he
- 6:13impregnated A staffer and then was crazy and went to jail.
- 6:18Like, I mean, what has happened to Michigan athletics?
- 6:22And I say that that is unfair to the other teams in the sports
- 6:26that have kept themselves clean. But the two biggest sports at
- 6:29the University of Michigan, Michigan, which are men's
- 6:32basketball and men's football have had huge, huge and weird
- 6:38things happen. Winning national titles, coaches
- 6:41leaving. Again, if a guy wants to go to
- 6:43the pros, that's fine. It is kind of odd that he took
- 6:46the Dallas job because yes, Cooper flag is going to be good,
- 6:49but it's not like they have Luka Doncic.
- 6:52It's not like it's the Lakers like it is Michigan basketball.
- 6:56You can create a legacy there. You can build something.
- 6:59You can keep recruiting. You can you have a university,
- 7:02as much as I don't like them, that has pretty deep pockets
- 7:05with the NIL and all this stuff. So it's not like it's a, it's
- 7:08not like Butler and Brad Stevens years ago, like this is a
- 7:12program that can sustain itself for a very long time.
- 7:15And the football team, I mean, at this point, what you don't
- 7:21say about the football team is, is more surprising than what you
- 7:24do because it is just, you know, they have these top recruiting
- 7:27classes, but then they never have high end talent, but
- 7:30they're competitive. But then their coaching is, I
- 7:32mean, again, you talked about it Harbaugh Stallions more like
- 7:36what is going on here? And again, this is this is what
- 7:41happens when we talked about this on the last show I was on
- 7:46and thank you again for having me on, by the way.
- 7:48But when you get into NIL and all this money and all this
- 7:51drama, whether it's the highest paid coaches in a sport, these
- 7:54kids who are millionaires at 181920 years old and hold a lot
- 7:58of the power, eventually that power got a seep from somewhere.
- 8:03And it's not going to seep from the coaches because they have to
- 8:06be able to control. So it is usually the
- 8:08administrative. It is that these are the guys
- 8:10that in Wall Street that get the golden parachutes to leave.
- 8:14Because the the question really is what is his job?
- 8:18What if in 2026, if you're an athletic director of a Big 10
- 8:23school, of an SEC school, of a Big 12 school, what is your
- 8:27actual job? And I just don't think his job
- 8:30going into year 10 was the same job that it was in 2016 when he
- 8:33was hired. No.
- 8:35And and I will say too for a little bit of for clarification.
- 8:39So according to the reports, Dusty May didn't want to, didn't
- 8:43leave Michigan because he didn't enjoy being there, at least
- 8:47initially. By what we know, Barry, anything
- 8:49else coming out between between now and then it it was basically
- 8:54reported. He he doesn't care for how the
- 8:57college landscape is currently as far as you know, he's
- 9:00constantly having to go out and basically rebuild his roster,
- 9:03which it is frustrating for a lot of these coaches.
- 9:06You know, it is a complete and total adaptation for something
- 9:09that these guys, you know, you look at Dusty May, you look at
- 9:12somebody like, you know, and, and we'll get to him here in a
- 9:15second. You look at Kyle Whittingham.
- 9:16I mean, Kyle Whittingham was the head coach of Utah for 20 years
- 9:19and, you know, he's had to adapt and change how he how he
- 9:22approached Utah football and now coming into Michigan.
- 9:26So it is a big change for them. And it I think it hurts and
- 9:29makes things even more difficult when you have somebody that, you
- 9:34know, looking at the the athletic director, it's like,
- 9:38OK, you've been here for 10 years.
- 9:40Like you've seen literally the highs and the lows of the
- 9:42program for the last decade. And like you said, the fact that
- 9:47there are other programs that their their hands aren't as
- 9:50dirty. They don't have as many issues
- 9:51with all of this. And yet here is a proud and
- 9:56prestigious university that has been around forever.
- 9:59They have tons of graduates, both, you know, academically,
- 10:03you know, professionally, athletically, all of that.
- 10:06And here they are absolutely just struggling and having
- 10:12issues as, as a professional university going through this.
- 10:17It. It does seem weird though,
- 10:19because I guess initially from reports, it seemed like Michigan
- 10:23wants to almost fire him, but it's kind of hard to do that
- 10:26because of his success. And it also seems as though this
- 10:30is going to be their quote UN quote quick fix to to hide this.
- 10:34Now one of the things that I guess makes it more
- 10:37incriminating for him. And I don't know if we would
- 10:41ever find out how much of this, you know, really ties back to
- 10:47him. The the rumor is is that that
- 10:50personal assistant that Sharon Moore had that he had a
- 10:53relationship with Sharon Moore asked if she would be able to
- 10:58travel with him. Which again, weird.
- 11:03First, first weird. And according to reports, Ward
- 11:07Manuel was like, eh, probably not a good look.
- 11:11Not a no, don't do that. Just a eh, may I?
- 11:16May I? Suggest not going through with
- 11:19that is probably what he said. Right.
- 11:21And like it, it begs the question, who has to be the
- 11:27adult in the room then of like, hey, man, you know, not, not,
- 11:31not, not boss to subordinate, not athletic director to head
- 11:34coach Ward to Sharon, man to man brother, not no.
- 11:40Not. Just no, don't do it.
- 11:42Just just tell me now. Don't do it so.
- 11:46There's a there's a great piece of advice that I have for
- 11:49anybody who's going to somebody with an awkward question.
- 11:53OK, So if you, Tony, come to me and say, hey, Joe, I have this
- 11:59girl, we're having a fling, I'm married.
- 12:03You think I should bring her on the road?
- 12:07Let me pick up the phone as the person who just received that
- 12:09question, call my boss and say, hey, I got this side piece, I'm
- 12:15married. Can I take her on the road?
- 12:17And if the person who just asked me that question looks at me
- 12:20like, hey, hey, hey, what are you doing?
- 12:23Then they should probably know the answer already.
- 12:25We, we all want to be kind of told what we feel is good, not
- 12:28what the right answer is. And the fact that Moore
- 12:30apparently went to Manuel and said, hey, you know, I think
- 12:35it'd be cool if she could travel with us.
- 12:37And Manuel didn't immediately go.
- 12:40Why? Because he knew the answer.
- 12:43And and that's again, it's like I talked about when you start
- 12:46losing, when the power structure moves, when the, you know, the
- 12:51availability of money, when the availability of power is more
- 12:55open than it used to be because it went before was before
- 12:57athletic director was the top dog, then the coaches, the
- 13:01coaches overtook athletic directors.
- 13:03We know that, especially in football and basketball.
- 13:05And now the kids are getting to where the coaches were and
- 13:08they're fighting for the top. I mean, it's the same reason
- 13:11we've seen, I mean, we talked about with Soresby.
- 13:13I mean, the whole half, the state of Texas was ready to
- 13:16revolt to let this kid play. And the other half is like, get
- 13:19the kid out of here. He broke the rules.
- 13:20Like the the power structure and the bleeding of everything is so
- 13:24weird. And, and again, for a university
- 13:28that had such success in the last three years or the last
- 13:31five years of national championships in two major
- 13:36sports in men's and obviously making money for him to step
- 13:39down. And then, like you said,
- 13:40reportedly they want to fire him.
- 13:43So they want to fire him because they found out the smoking gun
- 13:46from the Moore stuff. Or was it?
- 13:48Is this the Jimmy Johnson trade chart where so many scandals
- 13:51gets you so many points and finally, the value just isn't
- 13:54worth it. Like, hey, we're paying you $12
- 13:56million a year, but if we're going to get sanctions, lose
- 14:00scholarships and the donations are going to stop coming in,
- 14:03then you're not worth it anymore.
- 14:05And I don't know where the scandal rankings rate, but
- 14:08clearly the people of Michigan have decided that this guy is
- 14:12not worth it. And, and you would know this
- 14:14better than I would because despite being an avid reader of
- 14:18the Michigan Daily, I don't know if there is anybody who is who,
- 14:23who's going to be the new AD. Are they going to try and be
- 14:25like Carbaugh and and get the big name and old?
- 14:28I mean, I'm throwing it out there.
- 14:30Could this be a Brady spot? Then so somebody had mentioned
- 14:34that I think and I I don't know how much you listen to the radio
- 14:38or how much you listen to some of these sports shows. 2 pros
- 14:41and a cup of Joe with Brady Quinn, Lavar Arrington and Jonas
- 14:44Knox. Hey, don't listen.
- 14:46I think they mentioned it or maybe maybe somebody else, maybe
- 14:50another big time show had mentioned that would just be
- 14:54like one more thing to check off of Brady's like professional To
- 14:58Do List of like he's a partial owner of the Raiders.
- 15:01You know, he's a color commentator for Fox, for the
- 15:03NFL, like. He's going to be a WWE star here
- 15:05soon. He signed a deal with them.
- 15:07I know. And he they of course created
- 15:09the storyline of him smacking Logan Paul.
- 15:11It's been like a build up for the last like I think year and a
- 15:14half, two years now. So that doesn't surprise me.
- 15:17So I mean, and he obviously loves Michigan.
- 15:20So I mean, what, what other thing for him to dabble in then
- 15:23being, you know, the the the the AD of Michigan?
- 15:28But it does lead me to another question, though, because
- 15:31they're they're finally is an adult in the room.
- 15:35I feel like he's been put in like the worst possible spot and
- 15:39it sucks because I liked him at Utah.
- 15:41I liked him as a head coach and Kyle Whittingham leaves Utah
- 15:45after like 21 years being the head coach there goes to
- 15:50Michigan, he has to already clean up the Cherone Moor mess
- 15:54and basically the guy that probably signed off on helping
- 15:58hire you is getting the boot at the end of the season.
- 16:02And so now not only do you have to right the ship from the
- 16:07basically a football perspective as far as running everything,
- 16:10which a lot of people have said, realistically, when you're the
- 16:14head coach of the football program anyway, you all but run
- 16:17everything to start with. So not only do you have to try
- 16:21to clean everything up, get Michigan back to where they were
- 16:23or at least some type of fundamental stop getting in
- 16:27trouble, like stop putting your private parts where they don't
- 16:31belong or where they shouldn't belong.
- 16:34Like, and he has to come in and clean up all of this on top of
- 16:38he has to try to have success as a football coach on the field
- 16:42with now a sophomore quarterback in Bryce Underwood, who I think
- 16:47I don't necessarily think he underperformed last year.
- 16:50I think a lot of the hype that went into him, the amount of
- 16:53money that they paid him, especially after he decided to
- 16:56transfer well, decommit from LSU and decide to commit to Michigan
- 17:00to go there. You know, the the, the height
- 17:03was behind him that he was supposed to be the the next
- 17:06great coming. He's this five star quarterback
- 17:08and whatnot, but they didn't really have the weapons or the
- 17:11supporting cast around him. Now it seems like they do.
- 17:14They caught a couple of key pieces as far as the transfer
- 17:16portal goes and whatnot. It seems like they've built
- 17:18themselves back up. And I think with Kyle
- 17:20Wittingham, if we've seen anything from him at Utah, he
- 17:24over performs with what you could probably consider
- 17:28underrated talent. But to you, do you feel like, do
- 17:33you feel like if let's say, let's say Michigan only gets
- 17:36like nine wins this season, Do you think then there's already
- 17:40Michigan fans coming out like, oh, you know, he's he's not
- 17:43going to be got because they got nine wins last year with Sharon
- 17:45Moore and that was a miss. I think if they get nine wins
- 17:48this year, they should be doing backflips.
- 17:50I think with everything going on, they should be extremely
- 17:52happy with nine wins. Now, as always, when it comes to
- 17:55the Big 10 and when it comes to robberies, it's going to matter
- 17:58who the nine wins come against. We know that.
- 18:00We know if it's if it's not against Penn State, if it's not
- 18:03against Ohio State, if it's not against Michigan State, if it's
- 18:06not against some of these teams, it's not going to matter as
- 18:08much. And we know that.
- 18:10And I think one of the reason that Underwood kind of got lost
- 18:12in the shuffle last year is because Julian San had a much
- 18:15better year than a lot of people predicted.
- 18:17That kid was not going to be this.
- 18:19No, I mean, like I'm an Ohio State fan.
- 18:21That kid was not going into the spring game.
- 18:23The number one consensus started for Ohio State and he came in
- 18:27and he and and this year he is but like last year he was kind
- 18:30of the kid was like, holy crap, that kid in Ohio State freshman
- 18:34is really good. Like they they didn't forget
- 18:36Underwood. But like you said, it's it's not
- 18:37that he had a bad season, just kind of got overshadowed and you
- 18:42know it, it happens. So could they bounce back?
- 18:44Could they get nine wins, ten wins, 11 if it gets kind of
- 18:48crazy? Sure.
- 18:49We've seen the Big 10 get topsy turvy, especially at the end of
- 18:52the year, plenty of times. You know, Cincinnati, Michigan,
- 18:55Ohio State, Wisconsin has done it.
- 18:58Iowa has thrown some things into there.
- 19:00Like it happens. But if I'm a Michigan fan, and
- 19:04I'm definitely not a Michigan fan, I think nine wins this
- 19:08year, I've got to be at least content.
- 19:11I'm not like throwing a parade, but I'm not going to burn down
- 19:14the stadium. I just, I, it's so weird because
- 19:18and I didn't realize that somebody brought this up years
- 19:20ago. I can't remember who was.
- 19:20I wish I could give them credit of like when you were a big time
- 19:24college coach. And again, we're sticking to
- 19:26men's football, men's basketball.
- 19:28If you're the new football coach, you kind of lean on the
- 19:30basketball coach to see what the culture is and kind of like,
- 19:33hey, this is what this is who the big people are.
- 19:35This is who you deal with, blah, blah, blah.
- 19:38But he was coming here and it's all of a sudden like he's now
- 19:41the most tenured coach and he hasn't coached a football game.
- 19:44He is more tenured than the basketball coach.
- 19:47And that's kind of scary when you're a multi $1,000,000
- 19:51program who is second most, third most recognizable in the
- 19:56Big 10. So you're a top 10 by aura, by
- 20:00everything. Like Michigan is a brand.
- 20:02There's Ohio State, there's Penn State, and there's Michigan.
- 20:05You can interchange them however you want.
- 20:07But in 2026, those are the big three.
- 20:10And now going into this with, again, a new athletic director,
- 20:14essentially because he's not making decisions, he's not
- 20:17setting up anything for the future.
- 20:19A new football coach and a new basketball coach coming off an
- 20:23NCAA title and what, the three time, you know, three years ago
- 20:28defending National Football champions and this is where
- 20:31you're at now. Good luck to that young man.
- 20:34I mean, he's not that young, but he's not that old.
- 20:37Yeah. So to give you an idea of their
- 20:39schedule, so they start out, they host Western Michigan, then
- 20:43they host Oklahoma, they face UTEP, they host them and they
- 20:48host Iowa. So they don't even leave Ann
- 20:50Arbor the first four games. They don't leave Ann Arbor at
- 20:53all in September. Then they finally leave in
- 20:55October. They have to go to Minnesota,
- 20:57they host Penn State, they host Indiana, they go to Rutgers,
- 21:01they host Michigan State. Then they have to go all the way
- 21:03up to Eugene to take on Oregon. Then they host UCLA late
- 21:08November. I don't think UCLA will do that
- 21:10well. And then of course the game to
- 21:13end the year at Ohio State. So I mean, I like I said, I
- 21:19think if they get nine wins, they're solid because I I see
- 21:22them losing at Oklahoma or against Oklahoma.
- 21:26I see them losing against Oregon, more than likely against
- 21:31Ohio State, and they might even lose against Indiana.
- 21:33So they might finish eight and four realistically, just kind of
- 21:36looking at that schedule. And then also, it'll kind of
- 21:38depend on how Penn State's doing, because Penn State has a
- 21:41cupcake schedule. This.
- 21:42Year right and and Penn State is again, that is a rivalry game so
- 21:46that I throw that out the window it it's again like I think if
- 21:50you get nine wins, you have to be OK with that and that's the
- 21:53thing. What do Michigan fans expect
- 21:56going into this year with a first year head coach, a second
- 22:00year quarterback, all the scandal going on, What are your
- 22:03actual expectations? Yeah, and we'll, we'll find out
- 22:07because I mean, I think I feel like Michigan's fans, I feel
- 22:10like what you said as far as like they, they're just going to
- 22:13be happy to be there. They want, I think Michigan fans
- 22:15and Michigan as a whole wants a lot of this stuff basically not
- 22:19swept under the rug, but just like, hey, let's wash our hands,
- 22:22we're done, let's move past it, let's keep going and go from
- 22:26there. So I I do think that will hold a
- 22:28lot of merit overall because yeah, it that whole Michigan
- 22:34thing is just an absolute mess. But let's move on to the next
- 22:39one. Going to be a little bit of a in
- 22:41the college out of college, back into college again with a little
- 22:47bit of NBAI don't talk NBAA whole lot.
- 22:50Oh, I can't remember if you're a if you're a big NBA guy or not
- 22:55I. Am I love my Indiana Pacers?
- 22:57Who's your bride, baby? I love my Indiana Pacers, but I
- 23:00do I I like I like following the league.
- 23:02I enjoy the league. I've realized that I've gotten
- 23:04older. I find basketball I've always
- 23:06found it enjoyable. I've always watched it my whole
- 23:08life, but I find it a little bit more enjoyable.
- 23:10I don't necessarily like all the the stuff that you know, with
- 23:12the flopping and all that, but you're going to get that in
- 23:14college now and even in high school.
- 23:16So but no, I I love watching the game and and really follow it as
- 23:20closely as I do any other sport. No.
- 23:22So Speaking of flopping, we have LeBron James who finally has
- 23:27decided to make his grand decision of where he was going
- 23:32to play this this season. And he decided on the City of
- 23:36Brotherly Love of the Philadelphia 76 years.
- 23:40It's a two year deal worth $8 million, the veteran minimum
- 23:45deal and the next year I believe is a player option.
- 23:49It is a player option, yes. So he can actually decide
- 23:51whether or not he wants to stay there or if he wants to go
- 23:54somewhere else, which is maybe he tries to go play for like
- 23:57every single team before he calls and quits just to say he's
- 24:00the only guy to do that. Who knows, Who knows, but I'll
- 24:05let you go. First though, What is your
- 24:07thoughts on LeBron Leflop James going to Philadelphia?
- 24:15I'm glad that you have no personal bias in this.
- 24:17I'm always glad when I get to talk to you and you never have
- 24:19any vested interest. It makes you very clear and
- 24:21concise in your thoughts. Tony, I've got a couple of
- 24:23thoughts about this. Number one, I'm fascinated
- 24:27because number one, he's a liar. In his opening press conference
- 24:33for his statement, he said that at the end of the season he
- 24:36thought he was done. No, you didn't.
- 24:38No, you didn't. Like you didn't no, you could do
- 24:42the whole like, I just didn't know if I could do it again, all
- 24:44that. That's fine.
- 24:45You did not think you were done it just that's not a factual
- 24:48statement, but that's fine. Aside from that, I'm interested
- 24:53because I think that he could be something for Philadelphia that
- 24:57and I have not watched a lot of the coverage.
- 24:59So I'm sure this has been brought up.
- 25:00This is not, this is my original thought of what I thought when I
- 25:04saw it. This is not an original thought
- 25:06if other people have had it. I look at this, everybody's
- 25:09like, well, this starting line up is insane.
- 25:12I'm not sure that he's going to be in the starting line up.
- 25:15This is a guy who has not played 65 games in a few years.
- 25:19He is my age. He is like 42 years old.
- 25:22He'll be 43. I'm 44.
- 25:24Like this dude is my age. What he is doing is incredible.
- 25:26Nothing can take away from that. This is not a disparaging remark
- 25:29on him. He has a chance to be like a
- 25:32super sub, like a man who Ginobili.
- 25:35He could start 15 to 20 games in the year depending on their
- 25:38depth. I also think that if you want
- 25:40somebody running your second team who can also play in the
- 25:43last 8 minutes of a of a game that's close, that's LeBron
- 25:47James. He could be that man who
- 25:49Ginobili type where if you want some of the younger guys, some
- 25:51of the guys with less talent. One thing LeBron has always
- 25:54done, guys with lesser talent, as long as they buy in, he makes
- 25:57them better. It has happened throughout his
- 26:00career. It happened in Cleveland, it
- 26:01happened in Miami, it happened back in Cleveland, it happened
- 26:04at the Lakers, and it has a chance to do it now.
- 26:07Forget Embiid, forget Maxi, forget Edgecomb.
- 26:10He makes other players that are not as good as him better more
- 26:15often than not. It's just a fact.
- 26:17So I don't know if that's the plan.
- 26:18I don't know if they've talked about the plan, but he is not
- 26:21the guy holding the golden chalice.
- 26:24He is not the best player on the team for the first time in a
- 26:27long time and there were glimpses of it last year.
- 26:30And who knows what he's going to be this year.
- 26:32Keep him healthy, get him to the playoffs.
- 26:33That's what they want. I also think it's intriguing
- 26:36because again, I don't like to get into the go debate.
- 26:40I don't know who the greatest of all time is.
- 26:42I think in arguably, no matter what, you put them top 4.
- 26:45When you look at stats, he's top 4.
- 26:47When you look at wins, he's top 4.
- 26:49When you look at all this stuff, he is no doubt top four.
- 26:53Unless you're Skip Bayless, right?
- 26:55Boy, I just watched one on him. We also, we all have our own
- 27:02personal biases like you, like me, like all of us.
- 27:05But what he is trying to do and I have seen it reported, so it's
- 27:11fine. It very big.
- 27:13If if he were to win a title in Philadelphia, he would be the
- 27:18first player to win a title in four different cities.
- 27:22OK, that is not nothing. And the reason I say that's not
- 27:26nothing and and somebody already is saying, hey, that won't make
- 27:29him the go, they'll never be the go.
- 27:30That's fine. He decided that when the
- 27:34Cleveland Cavaliers came back on that 73 and 9 Warriors team,
- 27:39down 31 and 1, he said after that I was the GOAT.
- 27:45So in his mind it is not about one versus one.
- 27:50It is about look at all this cool shit I can do.
- 27:53Look at this. I beat a 73 and 19.
- 27:56We were down 31. We came back impossible.
- 28:01I led the whole series in points, rebounds, assists,
- 28:05blocks, all this that. So again, he's never going to
- 28:10have the six championships as the best player on a team like
- 28:12Jordan. He's never going to have all the
- 28:15stuff that Kareem did. He's never like.
- 28:17He is one of the most physically gifted NBA players of all time.
- 28:20No doubt. He is one of the most incredible
- 28:23stat gatherers in NBA history for points, rebound and assists.
- 28:27No doubt about that. But when you look at his whole
- 28:31thing, longevity has definitely been his friend.
- 28:33But he is looking to do really cool stuff.
- 28:38And if you look, Cleveland hadn't won a title in the NBA
- 28:42ever. But like, you know, the whole
- 28:44city in 50 plus years, he wins one in LA.
- 28:48So that automatically is cool. He goes down to Miami.
- 28:51Who would want it there? Dwyane Wade, Cool.
- 28:54Now I did it with Dwyane Wade as the second best player.
- 28:57You know, Dwyane Wade did it with Shaq.
- 28:58Great. Now I'm on par with that.
- 29:00Then he goes back to Cleveland where they, you know, they won
- 29:03the title again. He wins one in LA.
- 29:05He wins in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a basketball
- 29:07city. It is a basketball city.
- 29:09And if they win a title there, it is a big, huge deal.
- 29:14Doctor J Moses, Malone, Lenny, I mean, like, you go on that
- 29:19pantheon again, that doesn't mean you're a great 76er, but
- 29:23they will remember you. There will be LeBron jerseys in
- 29:27the stands. There will be LeBron jerseys for
- 29:29years to come because he brought the title back.
- 29:32Listen, if one of my team, like the O1 Patriots hold a special
- 29:37place in my heart, it was the first team.
- 29:38But man, you love being a part of championships and everybody
- 29:41remembers you. Oh, you were on that team, you
- 29:43were on that. Trust me, they win one this
- 29:45year. Everybody's going to remember
- 29:47LeBron James was on this team and whether he had anything to
- 29:49do with it or not, he will get some credit.
- 29:52Not the lion's share of the credit, he will get some credit.
- 29:54So I think at this point, if he is trying to challenge any
- 29:58doubters like the Skip Bayless, like the like the Tony HS, like
- 30:03the Joe's of of if he's the greatest or not, you can't win
- 30:07the six, you can't do all the MVPS, you can't do all that.
- 30:10You just got to do a bunch of cool stuff, and winning a title
- 30:13in Philadelphia is really effing cool.
- 30:17True, there was a few things that I heard people bring up
- 30:22that to me made a lot of sense. And and of course, one of them
- 30:25to being the biggest of, you know, everybody's like, well, is
- 30:28he the GOAT? Is he not because he's compared
- 30:30to Jordan and they're the the thought was brought up that
- 30:35everybody talks about, especially more older basketball
- 30:38players because, and you could even make this argument with
- 30:41football too. A lot of these older guys, they
- 30:44tend to stick with the team that they that they get drafted with
- 30:47or that whoever they had the most success with, they stay
- 30:49with them through thick and thin.
- 30:52Truly like a marriage, like good or bad, they're with them
- 30:55through through it all. And you hear a lot of people
- 30:58make the argument of, well, you know, he he had to leave
- 31:01Cleveland to go win a couple championships.
- 31:03And then he came back, he won a championship with Cleveland,
- 31:06then he has to leave again to go to LA to win another
- 31:08championship because, you know, Cleveland wouldn't go get him
- 31:11help. I was actually listening to this
- 31:13on the on the way home. You know, somebody had brought
- 31:16up the fact of, well, if you look at the first time or not
- 31:19the first time, the second time that he was leaving Cleveland,
- 31:22you know, the the GM at the time was worried about, OK, well,
- 31:25what do we do post LeBron? Like what, what does that look
- 31:28like? And it's like, well, you still
- 31:30lost LeBron. You still took a dive and it was
- 31:34still bad no matter how you look at it.
- 31:38One of the other things that they brought up, and it's one of
- 31:40those, like you said, I have a bit of a personal bias because
- 31:44I'm I'm very critical of Uber Uber LeBron fans because he
- 31:50likes to build super teams, which, you know, with has
- 31:54somebody put it like Avengers level rosters to compete against
- 32:00everybody. But it but it does bring up a
- 32:03good point though, is he is he doing it because he truly feels
- 32:08that he needs that in order to succeed?
- 32:11And you can make the argument to once you win a championship, are
- 32:16you not almost in the consideration of being a Hall of
- 32:19Fame or a really good player because you were on a
- 32:22championship team? You know, it's not just one
- 32:25person doing this. It's a it's a whole collective.
- 32:28Or is he doing it Because if you look at competition, like you go
- 32:32out there to win, that's your only job to do.
- 32:36It doesn't matter how you win as long as you bring home the West.
- 32:40So I mean, he may be looking at it of what is my best way to
- 32:44compete in order to get to that point.
- 32:48But here, here is my thing when I first saw this.
- 32:51And again, I don't follow basketball the greatest.
- 32:55I like watching it in the playoffs.
- 32:56I think NBA playoff basketball is great.
- 32:59And the biggest reason why I think the NBA has too many
- 33:02games, 84 games or 82, however many is absolutely ridiculous
- 33:07because you can go on like a 2530 game losing streak.
- 33:12And if you all of a sudden, I mean, again, it's not realistic,
- 33:15but statistically you could RIP off like 50 wins.
- 33:19And next thing, you know, depending on if you're in the
- 33:20East or the West, you could be like a two or three seed.
- 33:23It's like, wait a minute, this, this, how is this the team that
- 33:26lost, you know, 30 games in a row and all of a sudden they're,
- 33:28you know, they're going through this.
- 33:30Not like it would ever happen. That's not realistic, but it is
- 33:33technically possible. But I mean, he's going to he's
- 33:38going to Philly, where they already got a Finals MVP in
- 33:42Jaylen Brown because they got him from the Celtics.
- 33:46Crazy move because they gave basically like a bag of chips
- 33:50and a half half working Paul George, hardly anything to get
- 33:56him. You already had Joel Owen Bead,
- 33:58you already have Tyrese Maxi, and now you have LeBron James,
- 34:01who like I know you mentioned you don't think he's even going
- 34:05to be in the in the starting line up to me.
- 34:08Like do you think LeBron has really come to that point in his
- 34:12age and in his career where he is accepted?
- 34:16Like you're going to be the 4th or 5th guy in the rotation.
- 34:20Like you're not even going to be a starter.
- 34:23Like I think he accepted it more with LA when they brought in
- 34:26Luca because Luca's young, because he is the future and
- 34:30because Luca is a superstar, that's like, OK, he's prepared.
- 34:35He was kind of prepared being in the older part, sort of like,
- 34:38yeah, I might I'm not going to be that guy anymore.
- 34:41And he's obviously been a more OK with it when he went to Miami
- 34:45because he around Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, like you were
- 34:48not the star, Like you were a star, but you weren't the guy.
- 34:51You were just a benefit and really just go out and hoop and
- 34:55that's really all you had to do. Like it.
- 34:59It's kind of weird to see. And and here and here's the
- 35:02other argument I would almost have for the quote UN quote GOAT
- 35:04conversation because you you look at Brady and again, you
- 35:09don't even have to compare him just directly to Jordan, but you
- 35:12know, Jordan, Kobe, Shaq, like how many of these guys kind of
- 35:15sat back and was like, you know, I think I'm OK with being a role
- 35:19player because how many times as a competitor, when you're one of
- 35:22the few guys in the world that can even get to that point,
- 35:26says, you know what? I'm OK with not having to do as
- 35:29much because once you lose that spot, it's really hard to get it
- 35:33back. And it's even harder to get back
- 35:36when, like you said, he turned 43 this year on December 30th.
- 35:40Like, like, how many more times are you going to be OK with
- 35:44like, yeah, I'll just be a role player just because I want to
- 35:46play ball. And it is really hard.
- 35:48I mean, what Russell Westbrook has struggled with that, who's,
- 35:51again, not at the LeBron level as a really, really great player
- 35:55who is now looking for a team just like, hey, man, like, I'm
- 35:58going to sign like a $2,000,000 deal.
- 36:00I just want to go play somewhere these guys want to play.
- 36:02I think LeBron James loves the game of basketball.
- 36:04The good debate again. We could settle that another
- 36:06time. If I were LeBron James, I would
- 36:09binge season 1 Ted Lasso multiple times and just watch
- 36:15from the the prospect of Roy Kent.
- 36:19And I got I, I finally watched that show this year and it's
- 36:21incredible and I love it and I'm going to start it again.
- 36:24But I remember watching that and remember like the part of Roy
- 36:27Kent was really great. They didn't have to show you how
- 36:29great he was. Everybody talked how great he
- 36:32was and he wanted to play like that and he couldn't.
- 36:36And he knew he couldn't, but he didn't want to talk about how he
- 36:39couldn't. And LeBron James leaving the
- 36:42Lakers signing A2 year deal with a player option for $8 million
- 36:46is kind of like Roy in the cold bath where he's like, just yell
- 36:51at me like, I know you're I know I screwed up.
- 36:53I know. But LeBron hasn't screwed up.
- 36:56That's the thing. For all the things you want to
- 36:57say about LeBron, he hasn't screwed up.
- 37:00The Lakers brought a move to bring in a young superstar to be
- 37:03the future leader of the team. LeBron changed the way that he
- 37:06played because he does do that very well and says this is Lucas
- 37:09team now. And instead of trying to have
- 37:11some drawn out contract thing with, you know, well, how much
- 37:16are you going to give me and what I did for this team a lot.
- 37:18He's like, I mean, the initial report was LeBron James has
- 37:21informed the Lakers he will not be returning this season.
- 37:24Not that he wants to return, not that he like, hey, man, good
- 37:27luck, guys. Thanks for everything.
- 37:29I'm going to go somewhere else. You guys go do you?
- 37:33That's a pretty big move for a guy who is the center of media
- 37:36attention for literally the last like 26 years since he was in
- 37:41high school. I can remember watching his
- 37:42games on ESPN in high school. Like, it's not an exaggeration.
- 37:48For almost 30 years, he has been the center of attention in one
- 37:51way or another in every room he walks in.
- 37:54So this is a big move. Again, I don't know what's in
- 37:58his psyche. I don't know what is going to
- 38:01push him and how long he'll do this.
- 38:03If he wins a title in the first year, maybe he opts out and says
- 38:07I'm going to go chase one more. Maybe I go to OKC, maybe I go to
- 38:11Minnesota, maybe I go to San Antonio.
- 38:13Maybe I go to some of these teams that have another chance.
- 38:16I have no idea. But it's, it is a fascinating
- 38:21way to see how his career is going to end.
- 38:23Because I, I honestly IA 100% him saying, seeing him say at
- 38:30some point, this is my last season in the NBA at some point
- 38:33this year, next year, whenever this is my last season, do the
- 38:36farewell tour, do all that. But I could also see him kind of
- 38:39just like after the season, just go, I think I'm done.
- 38:44And I so, so again, and I don't, there's not a wrong answer in
- 38:48that this is this. As much as we love to argue and
- 38:50talk and debate about sports, this is this guy's life and
- 38:54whether he let the cameras in or not.
- 38:56It, it's, you know, I, I'm going to, I'm going to go old school
- 39:00here for a minute. Tony, I don't even know if you
- 39:02remember the show. ER, there was a, a great episode
- 39:06where after Mark Green was attacked, this camera crew came
- 39:10in and they were talking and they wanted to film all this
- 39:11stuff, right? And they saw Carter mess
- 39:14something up and Doctor Green going in as as the teacher and
- 39:17all this, you know, did it and helped.
- 39:19And they wanted to sit down and interview with Mark and talk
- 39:22about his assault and all the stuff that happened.
- 39:24He's like, I don't want to talk about that.
- 39:25I don't want to talk about that. And finally, when he saw that
- 39:30they recorded what Carter screwed up and like this person
- 39:32died and all this, Mark's like, don't use that footage and like,
- 39:36why? It was great.
- 39:37And he goes, I'll sit down and do the interview.
- 39:40And as much as it hurt him, as much as it hurt his pride and as
- 39:43much as maybe he had to work through, it was this great
- 39:45episode. You got to see it from this
- 39:46different angle. And at times LeBron has let us
- 39:50see that. And maybe it comes to a point
- 39:52where it's like he'll never say he's old.
- 39:54He'll just say he's done. You know, I can't keep up or do
- 39:57this. And there will come a time, I
- 39:58believe in his career where he's going to be marking and
- 40:01somebody's going to. Whether they put him on a post
- 40:03or where they do something and he's like, I, I need to change.
- 40:06So that's why I think this year could be the Super sub year
- 40:10where it is taking a step back, where it's like, hey, I got the
- 40:12contract, I'm not the number one guy.
- 40:14Don't come to me after the games.
- 40:15Go talk to Jalen, go talk to Tyrese, go talk to Joe.
- 40:18Well, I'm just here to play basketball.
- 40:20Maybe that's it. Maybe you're going to see a
- 40:22shift change in all this. I don't know.
- 40:25And I think that is what's going to make the Philadelphia Sixers
- 40:28the great unknown. We don't know what the Celtics
- 40:30are going to be. We don't know what the Thunder
- 40:32are going to be. We don't know what the Spurs or
- 40:33the Pacers or the Knicks are going to be.
- 40:35We really don't know what the 76ers are going to be.
- 40:38We don't. And, and I don't think that's a
- 40:40bad thing. Isn't that kind of the fun of
- 40:42sports? Yeah.
- 40:44And I I think the other thing too that a lot of people have
- 40:46been really worried about with Philly is with the exception of,
- 40:49and again, you can correct me if I'm wrong, because you pay
- 40:52attention more to the NBA than I do.
- 40:54With the exception of Jaylen Brown, like all those guys like
- 40:57Joel Embiid and has history being hurt.
- 41:00Like I know Tyrus Maxi is still fairly new.
- 41:02I don't think he's been hurt that much, but I think.
- 41:04He's had a little injury issue, but nothing, nothing major now.
- 41:07And and I know LeBron is actually like, he's he's never
- 41:10been derailed, you know, like having to have surgery and being
- 41:13out for like an entire season. He has definitely got a
- 41:16longevity crown and like blessed with some of the best, like
- 41:21best, best long term durability you could ever ask of a
- 41:25professional sports athlete in any major sport, you know, to be
- 41:28doing it for this long that he has that.
- 41:32That's the other thing I've kind of heard with Phil, people who
- 41:34are maybe a bit more skeptical on Philly, it's whether or not,
- 41:39you know, can everybody stay healthy in order to really do
- 41:43this? So yeah, that that's kind of
- 41:46kind of my big question, but we will move on from Leflop James
- 41:52to, I know as you can tell, I'm a huge LeBron fan, just like,
- 41:57just like Joe's a huge fan of Michigan, I'm a huge fan of
- 42:00LeBron James. Put pull your shirt down.
- 42:03Your your bias is showing. Your bias is showing.
- 42:07But but let's end the show on a high note and kind of an
- 42:12interesting one, because if anybody follows college football
- 42:16as much as as much as I do and even as much as Joe does, there
- 42:20have been some inklings and some rumblings here for a while.
- 42:25I mean, we're talking the last couple of years with the playoff
- 42:29expansion. They expanded it from four teams
- 42:31now all the way up to 12. And now the big topic, do they
- 42:37go to 16 teams or do they go to 24?
- 42:41And initially, by all reports, the Big 10 was the only
- 42:45conference that wanted 24 teams. The ACC, Big 12 and SEC were
- 42:50like, note, we're standing our ground, we want 16, OK.
- 42:56And then they thought about it and then the ACC and the Big 12
- 42:59apparently came out and said, look, we, we don't want to
- 43:02follow by the wayside because we know one of the two of us is
- 43:05probably going to become the third conference, while the
- 43:09other one may or may not even exist anymore.
- 43:12So we're going to side with the Big 10 because maybe they won't
- 43:15poach from us as much. And if it helps us get more
- 43:19teams in to show off our conference and our brands, we're
- 43:23going to go to 24. Which leaves the poor little old
- 43:26Southeastern Conference. The SEC is the lone wolf to
- 43:31fight against the Big 10. And of course, with SEC Media
- 43:36Days happening last week in Tampa, all of these questions
- 43:40were asked to Greg Sankey. All of the coaches.
- 43:43What are their thoughts? Nick Saban weighed his opinions
- 43:46on all of it. I have no doubt he did.
- 43:49And apparently most of this stems from the apparently the
- 43:56Big 10 and the SEC had a mutual agreement.
- 43:58And the agreement was if the SEC moves to 9 conference games,
- 44:03which they did starting this year, that then the Big 10 would
- 44:07be more inclined to do the 16 team playoff.
- 44:11They're like, OK, we'll do kind of a handshake agreement.
- 44:13We'll make this happen. We'll sign off on 16 teams and
- 44:17then we should be good for a while.
- 44:19Let's move forward from there. Well apparently the Big 10 got
- 44:23their way and once more because the SCC agreed to do 9
- 44:27conference games and then they still decided we want to do 24
- 44:31because they have like 18 teams in the conference.
- 44:34Not like all 18 are going, but they have 18.
- 44:37Teams, they think all 18 are going.
- 44:41No, they ain't. I can tell you right now, Purdue
- 44:44football and Northwestern football are not getting
- 44:47anywhere close. But Rocker slander will not be
- 44:50appreciated on the podcast. Hey, 20 years ago you can make
- 44:54that argument. 20 days ago, you can't make that agreement.
- 45:01Oh, MJ, we are. You are almost there.
- 45:03You guys have the benefit. Penn State has a super easy Big
- 45:0710 this year. Like, that is probably the best
- 45:10schedule that a team could get, especially for a team that is
- 45:13kind of rebuilding and figuring out who they are again with a
- 45:16new head coach. But nonetheless, though there
- 45:19there has been talks that the SEC might split off from the
- 45:22NCAA and create their own new league.
- 45:25Now, funny enough, one of your favorite coaches, a former Ohio
- 45:30State coach and Urban Meyer brought up actually a really
- 45:34good point on his thoughts about it.
- 45:37And he thinks if the SEC breaks off, they won't do it alone,
- 45:44that if they break off to form their own league, that some
- 45:47other conference might also do it too.
- 45:50Now the of course, the big fish in the room, they think they
- 45:54think it'll be the Big 10. Why the Big 10 would do that
- 45:58with the SEC. Maybe it's this like, you know,
- 46:02do or die hard pact that they have with each other.
- 46:04But we've seen those definitely get turned around very quickly.
- 46:08And maybe it's just the ACC and the Big 12 contending with each
- 46:12other. But I guess the question to you,
- 46:16Joe, is do you think the SEC would ever do something like
- 46:22that or any other conference? Because I mean, everybody's kind
- 46:25of getting sick and tired of the NCAA as a whole because they do,
- 46:29but they don't have power. The College Sports Commission
- 46:34could have power if everybody signed off on it.
- 46:36But then that would mean everybody comes back to kind of
- 46:39a semi level playing field. And a lot of these teams like
- 46:44Miami, who I know is in the ACC, but still Miami, who's a big
- 46:48spender, Texas, who is a big spender, LSU, Ohio State,
- 46:52Michigan, all of these teams that they're flourishing right
- 46:56now in this, you know, Wild West of college football that they
- 47:02may not want to sign off on it because no, I don't.
- 47:04I don't want my competition to be level with me.
- 47:06I want to only have to really deal with like 5 or 6 teams that
- 47:10I have to deal with. Otherwise, it's a cakewalk for
- 47:13me. Yeah, it's like, it's like going
- 47:16to a so like a gunfight where everybody has the same gun and
- 47:20you're like, no, no, no, like I'm super rich.
- 47:22I bought the you know, I I bought the Smith and Wesson and
- 47:24it's like, Nope, you're going to use a everybody's going to use
- 47:27the same gun. You're like, well, no, that
- 47:28helps. And it's like, well, tough, you
- 47:30know, it's like, this is the gunfight that's going on.
- 47:33I I hate this. If if somebody wants to go buy
- 47:36the the Lib, the Lib golf has shown that these secondary
- 47:40leagues, they cannot sustain themselves with billions and
- 47:43trillions of dollars of Saudi money, They got bored because
- 47:46it's not the same. I think if the Big 10, if the
- 47:49SEC wants to go, I think the Big 10 should help them pack and
- 47:54they should be the ones who establish themselves as the
- 47:56anchor to the NCAA. Listen, we talked about Michigan
- 47:59earlier. Michigan has the most wins in
- 48:01NCAA history because of a long history.
- 48:03You leave, those don't go away, but they kind of lose their
- 48:07luster. And I think if a team or sorry,
- 48:10not a team, if a conference like the SEC wants to threaten to
- 48:13leave the NCAA, for all of the faults the NCAA has, you let
- 48:18them leave. The Liv golfers left.
- 48:21They still play in the majors. The PGA Tour did, because of the
- 48:26loss of some of those players, change some of the policies for
- 48:30the PGA players that the PGA players have warranted and said,
- 48:33hey, listen, they, they stepped up to the plate.
- 48:35They did some things. You know, Rory McIlroy has been
- 48:37very adamant that he is staying with the PGA for all of its
- 48:40faults. And, you know, things like
- 48:42that's it. And I think that if the if the
- 48:45SEC and the ACC want to go off and create another league,
- 48:49another division, whatever they want to do, go and let them.
- 48:52And they'll probably get a lot of people watching them, but
- 48:55it's not the NCAA. Listen, there is a reason we see
- 48:59the highlights of the USFL games more than we watch the actual
- 49:03game. Because a highlight, a catch is
- 49:06cool, a tackle and interception of whatever is awesome.
- 49:10But you know, when you watch it, it is not the product that you
- 49:13want to see. It is the NFL.
- 49:16It is the same reason that you'll get 8000 people going to
- 49:19a training camp and you'll get 50,000 people in a stadium.
- 49:22There is a difference and whether it and, and I'm sorry,
- 49:26like if you are the big 10, you almost have to be begging that
- 49:29the SEC decides to try and pull this off.
- 49:31Because yes, they will make money.
- 49:33They will get sponsors. They will even attract a few
- 49:36colleges or maybe even a few conferences.
- 49:39But this allows you to be the anchor, be the change you want
- 49:43to be. If you're the Big 10 and the
- 49:46NCAA loses the SEC, which is no small thing, by the way, I'm not
- 49:50saying that it is not a big deal.
- 49:52It is a huge deal. But if you're the Big 10 again,
- 49:56we should just call this episode the power episode.
- 49:58It is about the power you now hold the power you have, the
- 50:02brand recognition. You are the most established
- 50:05conference. You want to argue with it, with
- 50:07who it is, you or the SEC? Guess what?
- 50:09The SEC no longer exists by Felicia.
- 50:12We are the number one conference people, TuneIn to see us.
- 50:16You put those teams on our schedule, they TuneIn.
- 50:19I'm sorry. Like if the SEC in the Big 10 or
- 50:22have some backroom, you know, shake deal.
- 50:26I'd be shocked if I'm the Big 10.
- 50:28I've got to be salivating at the fact that the SEC is is even
- 50:32floating the idea of leaving because the NCAA is broken
- 50:36again. Be the change you want to be.
- 50:38If you're the Big 10, then you force the NCAA.
- 50:41Listen, this is what needs fixed.
- 50:43This is what we're doing. Whether it is a salary cap,
- 50:46whether it is a spending gap, whatever it is, I figure this
- 50:51stuff out. But I I think leaving is a huge,
- 50:55huge problem for the Big Ben. Well, here.
- 50:58So here's apparently the other part that goes into it of not
- 51:01just the NCAA being broken, but the College Football Playoff as
- 51:05a whole in that whole ranking committee.
- 51:07And one of the things that was brought up that there, there's a
- 51:11part of me agrees and there's a part of me that disagrees like
- 51:14it. It's one of those trying to be
- 51:16as neutral as I am. I do see the logic in both sides
- 51:20of it. And one of them being, and I
- 51:23think Lane Kiffin brought this up actually in his press
- 51:25conference that and I know there might be a little bit of bias
- 51:29there, even though I don't know how in the world that whole
- 51:31thing is going to pan out. Hopefully really.
- 51:33Well, otherwise, damn it, the the argument was made that
- 51:41should a consideration be made more for a nine and three SEC
- 51:47team to get in as compared to let's say whoever comes out of
- 51:52the Big 12, let's say it's Texas Tech.
- 51:54If they come out 10:00 and 2:00 or 11:00 and 1:00 and they get
- 51:58that playoff spot, should the overall comparison of
- 52:03conferences be made? And I guess part of that goes
- 52:07does go back to the scheduling, because the SE CS rules for
- 52:11scheduling is there has to be 9 conference games.
- 52:14So you're playing at least nine of the teams in your conference
- 52:17and one of your out of conference games has to be a
- 52:21power for opponent. So that means anybody in the Big
- 52:2610, anybody in the Big 12, anybody in the ACC and or Notre
- 52:30Dame can be on that list of who you have to face.
- 52:35But you only basically get 2 cupcake games now, which for us
- 52:40fans that's great because I necessarily want to watch, you
- 52:44know, Georgia kick the crap out of Mercer.
- 52:46Not really. Like that's like that's not even
- 52:50this fun. It's just a warm up game for
- 52:52your like fourth string guys. Like that's not even a fun game
- 52:55to see. We get to see the third punter.
- 52:58Literally like I got to give you some reps it seems like.
- 53:01Got to get warmed up, but like it.
- 53:04It does kind of make sense because as much as I love the
- 53:07Big 12 and as entertaining as the Big 12 is, it does kind of
- 53:11make sense when you look at the Big 12 as a whole.
- 53:13There's 16 teams in that conference and realistically
- 53:17when you look at them, there's what, 2 teams are considered the
- 53:21heavy favorites and then a whole bunch of kind of maybes.
- 53:25It's like right now it's Texas Tech.
- 53:27Even though there's a huge question as far as quarterback
- 53:30goes, even though Will Hammond had a great, had a great game
- 53:32against Utah last year, balled out.
- 53:35What does he look like this year?
- 53:37BYU was supposed to still be up there as far as their talent,
- 53:40even though their wide receiver room is in question.
- 53:43And then of course, Utah is maybe the third.
- 53:46But again, what does Utah look like now post Kyle Woodingham
- 53:50changes of everything. But for the most part, the Big
- 53:5312 is just wide open. So whoever wins that conference,
- 53:56they may come out and whoever is second may come out, you know,
- 53:5810 and 211 and 1, whatever the case may be.
- 54:01So let let's just say for hypothetical argument
- 54:04situations, it's like it was last year, you know, you have a
- 54:08Texas Tech team that's 12 and O OK, they won the conference
- 54:11outright. All right, cool, they're in.
- 54:13But then you're sitting with BYU, who went 11:00 and 2:00
- 54:17because the only two games they lost was to Texas Tech.
- 54:20And that, let's say, you know, again, for sake of argument, you
- 54:24have Alabama, who ended up going nine and three being lost in the
- 54:29SEC game. You know, who deserved to be in?
- 54:32Was it Alabama because they got the crap kicked out of them by a
- 54:35better Georgia team who went slightly farther than Texas Tech
- 54:39did? Or BYU because they won 11
- 54:42games, which again, part of me is like, well, you can only, you
- 54:46can only play and win who's on your schedule.
- 54:48So there's only so much you can do with that as far as how teams
- 54:51are recognized and the value behind them.
- 54:54So BYU did what they were supposed to do and won more
- 54:56games. But you know, you look at the
- 55:00you know, how many ranked teams did Alabama play?
- 55:02Like, you know, they played Tennessee, who was ranked, they
- 55:04played LSU, who's supposed to be like a pre season national champ
- 55:08potential. They played Georgia and they
- 55:10beat them like that. I think that's another big part
- 55:13where a lot of these coaches in the SEC is like, you know, not
- 55:18to just toot their own horn, but it does come into the argument
- 55:22of like how do you do the fair evaluation of which team do you
- 55:25think would be better? A more battle tested team has a
- 55:28couple losses or a team that they won their games but they
- 55:32basically beat cupcakes to get there.
- 55:35Can we, can we figure this out? So you were when when it comes
- 55:38to college football, you were the one of the smartest people,
- 55:40the smartest person I know when it comes to college football,
- 55:42maybe other than my friend Lewis, who loves college
- 55:45football as much as you do. But but you guys are smart.
- 55:47Can we just figure this out real quick?
- 55:48I'm going to ask you a series of questions.
- 55:50I want quick, short answers. We're going to figure this out
- 55:53right now. You ready?
- 55:5618 playoff, no buys. We're good, right?
- 56:00Yeah, that. Would be OK 83 week by after the
- 56:04conference championship games and that is when the playoffs
- 56:08start. So every team gets a minimum of
- 56:10three weeks off and then the playoffs starts.
- 56:13We cool with that. OK, OK.
- 56:15OK, how many games does each team play in a season?
- 56:20If including. The traditional schedule.
- 56:22The traditional. Schedule be 12, well 12 and then
- 56:26depending on if you make your conference championship or not,
- 56:28that would be 13 great at least. No, No College Football Playoff
- 56:33rankings until after Week 7. We don't see any rankings.
- 56:37No team gets ranked. Nobody gets to be the quote UN
- 56:39quote preseason favorite. Nothing official.
- 56:42There's nothing after seven weeks of football when you've
- 56:45played a couple cupcake games, a couple conference games and
- 56:48probably your non conference against a powerful opponent,
- 56:52then they can start to talk about because we've seen too
- 56:54many times where these teams that aren't good get preseason
- 56:58rankings that are high and then loose beam but never really drop
- 57:01down. And teams that nobody expected
- 57:03to be good never get a chance to come up.
- 57:06So if you want to make it into the top eight, you don't get an
- 57:09automatic pass into the top 8 and then just have to kind of
- 57:12stay up low. Everybody earns their spot.
- 57:14So no College Football Playoff rankings until at least week
- 57:17seven of a like, again, I don't want to talk about MVP in the
- 57:21NFL till after Thanksgiving. I don't want to talk about it in
- 57:23October. It don't it's it doesn't make
- 57:26sense. So we cool with that.
- 57:28So here's another. Here's another thing that real
- 57:30quick one more. I got one more Winning your
- 57:36conference does not give you an automatic invite into the top 8.
- 57:43It does not. If you win your conference, you
- 57:46are not automatically in if you want to do this, if you want to
- 57:49make the 8 best teams, no preseason rankings, no college
- 57:53football rankings until minimum week 7.
- 57:56Everybody plays a schedule like you talked about, 9 conference
- 57:58opponents, 1, you know, power four and then two, whatever you
- 58:02want to do. You know, Ohio State will play
- 58:04Youngstown State to give them $500,000.
- 58:07You know, Michigan will play Central Michigan Tech
- 58:10University. They'll give them, you know,
- 58:12half, $1,000,000 in all this. And then if you win your
- 58:16conference championship game, it is not an automatic guarantee
- 58:19that you are in the top 8. So then here here would be my
- 58:23only counter question to that do the conference games even matter
- 58:27at that point? Because supposedly now they do
- 58:30and they don't matter because if you win your conference, then
- 58:33you are in, but if you lose, you're quote UN quote not
- 58:37technically punished. Even though BYU lost theirs,
- 58:41even though they weren't technically considered in, but
- 58:43it was an extra game that counts against them that they lost to
- 58:46the same team, even though they got absolutely destroyed in that
- 58:49game. Alabama, like you said, got the
- 58:52benefit of they faced Georgia and the SEC Championship got
- 58:56absolutely housed, but they didn't drop.
- 58:59Nothing changed in their rankings.
- 59:01They stayed exactly where they were before the game and then
- 59:05even after taking a massive loss in the game, they stayed exactly
- 59:10where they were. So really with with that, do you
- 59:13think we should even have conference championships game?
- 59:15Like do do you think they should do it like basketball if just
- 59:18whoever has the two best records or if like it's a tiebreaker
- 59:21type of thing, like if you have 211 and one teams like you guys
- 59:25are Co Big 10 champions or Co. I think that I think that's
- 59:28still important. I think being a conference
- 59:30champion is important, but I don't think that everything has
- 59:33it's same as like baseball. I don't think the the league
- 59:35that wins should host the World Series.
- 59:38I don't think that's something that has to be involved.
- 59:40I don't necessarily think that. So let's say in your scenario,
- 59:43right, Let's say we have two teams and we'll just throw two
- 59:45teams out. Let's say it's Ohio State and
- 59:48Michigan, right? They show up to the game,
- 59:51they're both undefeated, or they both have one loss, right?
- 59:54And then nobody else in the Big 10 is good.
- 59:57But we've seen that they're the two best teams clearly in the
- 1:00:00Big 10 this year. Michigan wins, but they're still
- 1:00:06number one and two in the conference, and they played the
- 1:00:08conference championship game and Michigan wins.
- 1:00:13Or let's say Ohio State wins. They flip the script and wins.
- 1:00:17But it was kind of fluky because Michigan's quarterback goes down
- 1:00:21or this or that. Maybe people want to vote
- 1:00:23Michigan in. Maybe they don't want to vote
- 1:00:25Ohio State. And maybe they say they kind of
- 1:00:27got lucky. Or like you talk about with Penn
- 1:00:29State with having us a cupcake schedule.
- 1:00:32Maybe if Penn State goes and they beat a bunch of cupcakes
- 1:00:34and there's a few injuries, kind of like how the Pacers made it
- 1:00:37to the Finals because a lot of teams got hurt.
- 1:00:39And all of a sudden it's like, I don't know, do we really want
- 1:00:42them to go represent us in the car?
- 1:00:44I just, I'm not against you winning your conference and
- 1:00:47going. I'm just saying we don't
- 1:00:49necessarily have to make it an automatic bid because let's face
- 1:00:53it, if you were an Alabama team and you were ranked in the top
- 1:00:5710 going into a college football season, it is almost impossible
- 1:01:02not to make an 18 playoff. Almost impossible, right?
- 1:01:06Last year's Alabama team was not good.
- 1:01:10They weren't good compared to and and they what, they never
- 1:01:14dropped out of the top 15. They essentially.
- 1:01:17No, they did. They did after week one.
- 1:01:19Week 1 was the only time because they lost to Florida State.
- 1:01:22Sure, And then they never ever, ever got another demerit that
- 1:01:25bad. And again, why are we ranking
- 1:01:29teams when we haven't seen play? Like, I don't know what Ohio
- 1:01:32State's going to look like this year.
- 1:01:33I'm not comfortable making them the number one or #2 team in the
- 1:01:36country. I want to go watch some
- 1:01:38football. I want to see this like, and if
- 1:01:40the rankings come out and they're five and one and the
- 1:01:43offense is kind of sputtering and the defense is just OK, I'm
- 1:01:47OK with them being ranked 17th. It'll suck as a fan.
- 1:01:51But if they're the 17th ranked team in the country, then you
- 1:01:54got some work to do, man. Like looks like some fires under
- 1:01:57some asses and I I just I the whole ranking throughout the
- 1:02:01year. I don't like I know they don't
- 1:02:03quote UN quote release the rankings until then.
- 1:02:05They do it every week. It's not like they go to The
- 1:02:07Cave and and I hate and I hate that the big 10 is for this 2014
- 1:02:13playoff. It is horrible.
- 1:02:17Listen, but we're, we're men here.
- 1:02:19We're talking, OK, You want to go to a beauty pageant with the
- 1:02:23top five most beautiful women or do you want to go to a beauty
- 1:02:26pageant with the top 100 most beautiful women?
- 1:02:29But guess what? 78 through 100 probably not
- 1:02:32going to be the high quality that you're expecting from one
- 1:02:34through 10. I'm sorry, call me a jerk.
- 1:02:37That's the way it is. 16 through 2417 through 24 in a College
- 1:02:41Football Playoff. 13 through 24 is not going to be good.
- 1:02:44I'm sorry, they're not. No, and, and, and that's my
- 1:02:48biggest issue because the the only thing to me that a 2014
- 1:02:53playoff does if, if everything is considered equal, and like
- 1:02:56you said, if, if the conferences technically don't matter, if
- 1:02:59it's just whoever the top 24 teams ranked are get in, then
- 1:03:04OK, then it makes the top 25 worth something.
- 1:03:06Because like you said, if you're, if you're just stuck at
- 1:03:08the 18th, it's like, OK, I, I'm not good enough or I'm not going
- 1:03:12to move up unless one of these teams just absolutely flounders
- 1:03:15and drops. So it's like 18th doesn't really
- 1:03:18do much for me. But yeah, it's like the the top
- 1:03:2124, I, I'm not sitting here like man, that 17th ranked team,
- 1:03:25like, man, if they get in like it's over, it's over for
- 1:03:29everybody. Watch out.
- 1:03:31But there is one other thing that Nick Saban brought up that
- 1:03:35I thought, believe it or not, considering it's Nick Saban and
- 1:03:38you know, he does have some fairly good ideas when it comes
- 1:03:42to college football. And I will give him credit where
- 1:03:44credit is due. He brought up eliminate the
- 1:03:49whole cupcake thing, right? He said 12 games, 12 power for
- 1:03:56opponents. Doesn't matter who.
- 1:03:58Like you can have your 9 conference and let's say, you
- 1:04:01know, everybody gets to 9. The SEC faces nine SEC teams.
- 1:04:05But then your other three power for opponents.
- 1:04:09You could do a rotation, one team from the Big 12, ACC and
- 1:04:13Big 10, Those can fill your three.
- 1:04:15You can throw Notre Dame in there whoever you want.
- 1:04:19But then that way it's easier because, OK, let's say, let's
- 1:04:23say you do have a team that's nine and three.
- 1:04:25OK, who are your 3 losses? Well, you beat a Big 10 team,
- 1:04:29you beat a Big 12 team, but you lost to an ACC team.
- 1:04:33And then you like won eight out of your nine SCC games.
- 1:04:38OK, you're probably a pretty good team that's going to be
- 1:04:41competitive and you're going to produce pretty good results.
- 1:04:44We should be able to throw you in there.
- 1:04:46Now if you're, you know, seven and five and your losses are to
- 1:04:51all three other power opponents and you lost your conference
- 1:04:54games, yeah, you're probably not going to get in there.
- 1:04:58It to me that puts almost everyone on a better, more equal
- 1:05:04playing field because again, you're like you said, you're not
- 1:05:07beating up on Youngstown, Youngstown State, you're not
- 1:05:11beating up on Mercer or Citadel. Like you're, you have to face
- 1:05:15Arizona or Baylor or you have to face, you know, whether it's
- 1:05:20Penn State, Michigan State, you know, even if they are the lower
- 1:05:25tier conference teams, like you are having to face a power team
- 1:05:29that is in a big time conference.
- 1:05:31And let's just see how you do. I I don't hate the idea.
- 1:05:36Could we tweak it a little bit? How about because this is when
- 1:05:40it gets into again, it's all subjective, right?
- 1:05:44You have to play a Power Four team within 500 miles of your
- 1:05:49college. You have to play a Power Four
- 1:05:51team further than 500 miles from your college.
- 1:05:56And then you get one spot. If you want to schedule a
- 1:06:00subdivision team, go ahead. But if you want to schedule
- 1:06:03another Power Four team, people are probably going to look at
- 1:06:06that favorably. If you are Ohio State and you
- 1:06:09want to do a favor to give Youngstown State some money
- 1:06:12because you do get a big paycheck for paying them, that
- 1:06:15is your choice. But if you want to go play
- 1:06:19Arizona State, you know, as as a, you know, opponent, nothing
- 1:06:22against Arizona State. You said Arizona, I said Arizona
- 1:06:25State. Then maybe that's what then
- 1:06:27maybe that's what you do. But if you basically make it
- 1:06:30that it is a regional, it is a quote UN quote regional non
- 1:06:34conference game, a non regional non conference game and then a
- 1:06:39wild card game, maybe that's the way to go.
- 1:06:42And then the school can figure it out from there.
- 1:06:44And that way you're not you're not forcing them to do it, but
- 1:06:49you're kind of like, hey, guys, you know what happens if you
- 1:06:52schedule that subdivision team? You might not have it as
- 1:06:55favorably looked as a team that goes and plays three Power 4
- 1:06:59schools. Yeah, no, I agree.
- 1:07:01Because then, yeah, it, it would give you a better idea of, you
- 1:07:04know, like you said, let's take Ohio State for example.
- 1:07:06Like if you look at the 12 games that they play and like you
- 1:07:09said, if they play young Youngstown State, it's like, all
- 1:07:11right, well, yes, you beat them. But let's say you lose, you do
- 1:07:14lose a couple of games against like Power 4 opponents.
- 1:07:17Like, yeah, maybe if that last game, if you got a if you got a
- 1:07:20win, maybe that tips the scale in your favor as far as you
- 1:07:23know, 100% you go up against and whatnot.
- 1:07:26So I, I like that. I don't, I don't mind that.
- 1:07:29But that that was one of the interesting things that I I
- 1:07:31heard Nick Saban say as far as his his thoughts for trying to
- 1:07:35save college football and make college football football better
- 1:07:38because it is something else fans want to see.
- 1:07:40Like, you know, how how many times do we get a Big 12 versus
- 1:07:43Big 10, you know, crossover matchup in football?
- 1:07:46Like we see a lot of basketball and, and basketball's cool.
- 1:07:49Don't get me wrong. I I love, I love seeing college
- 1:07:52basketball in those those cross conference rivalries because
- 1:07:55it's like, oh, OK, this is different.
- 1:07:56We don't get to see it all the time in college football.
- 1:07:59Like, yeah, you get the side hawk because it's Big 10 versus
- 1:08:01Big 12. But it's like, yeah, that's
- 1:08:04that's only one of those. Like it's really good when it
- 1:08:07happens kind of thing, but it doesn't happen all that often.
- 1:08:10And other than, oh, then there's Kentucky versus Louisville, but
- 1:08:14kind of the same thing. They're not Kentucky is not
- 1:08:17exactly a powerhouse in football and same with Louisville.
- 1:08:20So it's like, and like, I guess the closest ones you could get
- 1:08:23would be like Florida State, Florida or Florida Miami.
- 1:08:28When when all those teams are good and they face off, it's
- 1:08:31like, OK, this is the cross rivalry that we wanted to watch
- 1:08:35and we wanted to see. Yeah.
- 1:08:37So, but yeah, man, that's that is pretty much everything that
- 1:08:41we had. Awesome.
- 1:08:43It's thank you again for having me.
- 1:08:45I I love coming on. I love talking with you.
- 1:08:47You're always, you're always cool, calm and collected.
- 1:08:50And Stuart Scott said you're as cool as the other side of the
- 1:08:52pillow. I try to be.
- 1:08:54I try and I always try to work on my graphics to make stuff
- 1:08:57look cool too. But I appreciate you being on
- 1:09:01Joe. I always appreciate your
- 1:09:02thoughts. And and because again, there's
- 1:09:04only, I don't think people really understand whenever you
- 1:09:07do something like podcasts and you whenever you have a specific
- 1:09:10topic, no matter what it is, sports, heck, you could even go
- 1:09:14if you really want to get deep into it.
- 1:09:16And this is again, completely subjective.
- 1:09:19Like if you get anything like politics, like you have some
- 1:09:21people, you're like, wow, this person really knows what he's
- 1:09:23talking about. Like, oh God, this person
- 1:09:25doesn't know what they're doing. Anything like that.
- 1:09:30It it's hard to find people. It's like, OK, they have a
- 1:09:33different perspective, but I like hearing what they have.
- 1:09:36I like seeing the perspective, their perspective on this.
- 1:09:39And you're one of those people when it comes to sports, it's
- 1:09:41like I like Joe's thoughts and opinions because Joe always
- 1:09:43comes with something different. It's like, OK, yeah, I kind of
- 1:09:46see where he's coming from with that.
- 1:09:47So I appreciate you coming on, good Sir.
- 1:09:49Of course I I love it and, and just just keep rocking, man.
- 1:09:54I love it. I'm trying And then of course we
- 1:09:57still need to talk with Aman as far as.
- 1:09:59Our we do. Schedule for getting jawing and
- 1:10:02bawling back up. Listen, this kid is traveling
- 1:10:04all around the world calling cricket games.
- 1:10:06He he's forgot about us. We're, we're the cousins that
- 1:10:09like, we have all these childhood memories.
- 1:10:11They have all these photos and, and now we're like, hey, man,
- 1:10:13did you change your number? He goes, no, I just, I've been,
- 1:10:16I've been really busy and you know, like I got married and got
- 1:10:19a couple kids and we'll, we'll, we'll still play Wolf football
- 1:10:22out the yard. It's OK.
- 1:10:24We'll still play some video and I have time.
- 1:10:26You never have time. I never have time.
- 1:10:31That's what it feels like. But we'll we'll get it up and
- 1:10:33going. Say it's kind of one of those.
- 1:10:35When I thought about it, I was like, well, yeah, we're talking
- 1:10:37about doing it in the offseason, which we could do.
- 1:10:39We could still do shows. And it's going to be rough
- 1:10:42though, because there's it's the offseason.
- 1:10:44It's really hard to talk about stuff in the.
- 1:10:46Offseason. Oh, I love it.
- 1:10:47I love talking offseason. Offseason's my favorite because
- 1:10:50then you get to come up with the crazy ideas.
- 1:10:51Oh. Man, the crazy ideas, the crazy
- 1:10:54topics. Of course, the best part?
- 1:10:55All the drama, because everybody's bored.
- 1:10:58And they're like. Just one football to come back,
- 1:11:01Like, oh, hey, Michigan's athletic director is stepping
- 1:11:03down because he said, hey, man, don't bring the sidekick with
- 1:11:05you. Like, oh, what else do you got
- 1:11:08hiding under there, buddy? But nonetheless, I appreciate
- 1:11:13everybody tuning in. If you like this, definitely
- 1:11:15check out inside the Hoosier Mine wherever you get your
- 1:11:18podcasts, wherever you like to social media.

- 1:11:24Definitely check out Joe Joe will be doing hopefully more
- 1:11:28shows with me as well as we'll be starting up drawing and
- 1:11:30bawling all over again. We just don't have dates or
- 1:11:33times yet that we want to do that.
- 1:11:35But we'll definitely start come football season and hopefully
- 1:11:39just before football season, we'll get that started.
- 1:11:42And then Joe does have another podcast.
- 1:11:44He occasionally does the Out of Bounds, but I don't know as much
- 1:11:47about that one. That's OK.
- 1:11:49We're starting to back up. We had to get on different feet,
- 1:11:52but I'll have more information the next time.
- 1:11:54But as always, man, thanks. Thanks everybody for tuning in

- 1:12:33of it. She can correct me if I'm wrong
- 1:12:35on that, but she she has everything as far as changing,
- 1:12:39changing how you think, changing how you look at stuff.
- 1:12:41She's awesome. And again, we have a ton of
- 1:12:43other great veteran hosts too on the show.

- 1:12:57I'm like, hey, man, you're a veteran.
- 1:12:59I do a better. I do a show on a military
- 1:13:01network. Like can I give you shout outs?
- 1:13:03He's like, yeah, man, absolutely.
- 1:13:05I'm like, do you have a script for me?
- 1:13:06He's like, hell no. Just tell him whatever you want.
- 1:13:08Tell him like positively. I'm like, oh, man, that's
- 1:13:10dangerous. That's absolutely dangerous.
- 1:13:12And he's like, Nah, man, he goes, I trust you.

- 1:13:29before the football season kicks off.
- 1:13:32We'll probably do a show before then again, we might have one in
- 1:13:34between there. We'll we'll we'll see.
