- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 119 and
- 0:20verses 145 through one, 52145 through 152, and these are all
- 0:27of the verses that start with the Hebrew letter cough, cough,
- 0:32not COUGH. It's kind of transliterated into
- 0:37English, QOPHQOPH cough. So let's read through these
- 0:44verses and see what the Lord has for us today.
- 0:48I call with all my heart. Answer me, Yahweh, I will obey
- 0:52your statutes. I call to you.
- 0:54Save me and I will keep your decrees.
- 0:58I rise before dawn and cry out for help.
- 1:01I put my hope in Your Word. I'm awake through each watch of
- 1:06the night to meditate on Your promise.
- 1:09In keeping with your faithful love.
- 1:11Hear my voice, Yahweh. Give me life in keeping with
- 1:15Your justice. Those who pursue evil plans come
- 1:19near. They are far from your
- 1:21instruction. You are near Yahweh and all your
- 1:26commands are true. Long ago I learned from your
- 1:29decrees that you have established them forever.
- 1:35Well, I want to look at a few things as we begin this
- 1:38particular portion of Scripture. In verse 145 the psalmist says I
- 1:42call with all my heart here. I don't know if you guys noticed
- 1:48the desperation that is within the heart of this psalmist as he
- 1:54looks at his situation. From all appearances, this could
- 1:58very well be, you know, David during the time when he's
- 2:01getting pursued by Saul or when he is, you know, being pursued
- 2:07by the Philistines when his son Absalom has usurped the Kingdom
- 2:12and is hunting for him. It would just fit very well
- 2:15within one of those time periods.
- 2:18Even from verse 150, those who pursue evil plans come near.
- 2:22They are far from your instruction or verse 149 in
- 2:25keeping with your faithful love, hear my voice, Lord, give me
- 2:28life in keeping with your justice.
- 2:32So into that time of desperation, The psalmist says,
- 2:38God, I'm putting all of my chips in on you.
- 2:44I'm not a gambler, but I know the phrase, you know, putting it
- 2:47all on red. And so here this psalmist,
- 2:52possibly David says God, I'm placing everything on you.
- 2:56And so he says, I call with all my heart.
- 3:00Answer me, Yahweh, I will obey your statutes here.
- 3:04There is a need to hear from God.
- 3:07And so the psalmist says everything that I am has to be
- 3:11centered on you. Can I tell you this is something
- 3:14that I don't know if it's just me that struggles with it, if
- 3:16you struggle with this as well. I can compartmentalize my life
- 3:21sometimes. And so I can say, OK, well, yes,
- 3:25I need God to work in my job, but I'm going to just live my
- 3:32life with my family however I want to.
- 3:35And I can be living against God, but I really want God to work in
- 3:38my job. Or perhaps I'm not spending any
- 3:42time with the Lord. I'm not, you know, perhaps
- 3:46gathering with his people, the church as God commands me to.
- 3:51And yet I'm going to be like God.
- 3:53I really need you to, like, save this family situation.
- 3:57And I want to encourage us. God is not interested in just
- 4:03being the God of a portion of your life.
- 4:06He wants to be the God of every part of your life that there is
- 4:11no portion of Brian's existence or of you know, Melissa's
- 4:17existence that you say God, you can't touch this.
- 4:22It it goes into my calendar needs to be submitted to the
- 4:26Lord that I can say God. I am going to give a portion of
- 4:31my day every day to spend time with you in in prayer in the
- 4:36word. I am going to spend time talking
- 4:41with someone else about you, whether that's a a family
- 4:45member, a friend, coworker, neighbor, a friend from church.
- 4:49I am going to choose to spend time with and about you.
- 4:55I'm going to set aside the Lord's Day, Sunday, to your
- 5:00worship and whether I am here, whether I'm on vacation, I'm
- 5:06going to choose to spend time with God's people because that's
- 5:10what Jesus set up. He died for the church and so I
- 5:14need to be faithful to to be there to join with the people of
- 5:18God. So my my calendar needs to
- 5:21belong to the Lord. My wallet needs to belong to the
- 5:24Lord. I can't just do what I want with
- 5:27my money because I have responsibilities given to me
- 5:31from God. One of those, a primary one is
- 5:34to provide for my family. You can read First Timothy 5 and
- 5:39see that those that do not, I actually can't remember if I've
- 5:43gone through First Timothy yet in Tabernacle Talk.
- 5:46I'll have to look back through that after I record this
- 5:49episode. First Timothy 5, those that do
- 5:52not provide for their own family, Paul says, are worse
- 5:55than an unbeliever or if you have an older translation, worse
- 5:59than an infidel. And so I have to provide for my
- 6:02family. That's one of the things God
- 6:04commands me to do. Another thing God commands me to
- 6:07do is to give to the Lord's work that in the Old Testament you
- 6:13had the tithes and offerings that were given for the
- 6:17sustaining of the Levites and the priests and the temple.
- 6:21And while we don't have a, you know, Levite priest temple set
- 6:26up now, well, I have this building that I'm recording in
- 6:30right now. And so I need to be faithful as
- 6:33a member of Tabernacle Baptist to give of my money that the
- 6:38Lord's work would continue here. And so that's one of the other
- 6:43financial obligations that I have.
- 6:45I also think of. So my calendar, my oh finances,
- 6:50I have a responsibility to pay my taxes.
- 6:52Romans 13 says that God has set up the authorities in nations to
- 6:59punish evil doers and appraise those that do well.
- 7:02And he specifically says those that enforce the laws of a given
- 7:09nation are the servant of God to execute justice on evil doers.
- 7:17And so part of what my taxes are for is to help foster public
- 7:23safety. There's obviously a number of
- 7:26other things that the taxes can do, but God tells me give to
- 7:31Caesar what is Caesar's. So when I have, you know, a
- 7:34dollar or something on it, it's got United States of America on
- 7:39it. It's got a president and so that
- 7:43belongs to the United States government, especially the
- 7:47person that they say, hey, we want this back.
- 7:50And so I, I have a responsibility to pay my taxes
- 7:53and then I have a responsibility to be generous to the the poor.
- 7:58And that is something mentioned over and over and over again
- 8:01within scripture. And so I I should give of my
- 8:04calendar. I should give them my finances.
- 8:06I should give even of my home to be able to have people over to
- 8:11encourage them in their walks with the Lord or to tell someone
- 8:15that doesn't know Jesus about Jesus.
- 8:17My home doesn't belong to me. My calendar doesn't belong to
- 8:20me. My wallet doesn't belong to me.
- 8:23My entertainment choices don't just belong to me.
- 8:26That I always, and this is hard in America because we are so
- 8:31used to the kind of like libertine freedom of I can do
- 8:35whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want.
- 8:38But Scripture tells us that whatever things are true,
- 8:41honest, just pure, lovely, reputable, if there's anything
- 8:46praiseworthy about it, we are to think on those things.
- 8:50And so even my entertainment choices ought to be those things
- 8:54that would lead me in a right path.
- 8:57Now, that doesn't always have to be like a, you know, straight up
- 9:01religious or Christian thing. I watched actually just the
- 9:05other day, A Muppet Christmas Carol.
- 9:09And as I watched that, I thought about the marriage supper of the
- 9:14lamb through the like feast scene that's at the end of that
- 9:18movie. And so even though the movie,
- 9:21you know, it's, it's goofy, obviously written, adapted from
- 9:26a, a book from 200 years ago, but I was encouraged in my like
- 9:31walk with the Lord through watching this secular, the
- 9:37secular movie. And so the, the trick is not
- 9:40just OK, well, if a you know, if Angel studios or if you know
- 9:45someone else made it, I know there's a David movie that's out
- 9:49right now that actually saw some really good reviews for it
- 9:54doesn't just have to be Christian in order for us to
- 9:56partake of it, but in our personal walks with the Lord, if
- 10:00it draws us to Christ, then wonderful, let's do that.
- 10:04But if it doesn't draw us to Christ, we should not imbibe on
- 10:08those things. We shouldn't meditate on those
- 10:10things. Instead, we say, God, all of my
- 10:12heart, my, my words, my thoughts, my actions, my
- 10:15finances, my home, my entertainment, my calendar, all
- 10:19of it is submitted to you. And if you go, well, I don't
- 10:23really know if I want to do that.
- 10:24That seems like a lot. Can I encourage you, friend?
- 10:27Jesus gave up heaven for you. He gave up his life for you.
- 10:33I would not want to stand before God on judgment day and go yeah,
- 10:37I know you gave everything for me, but you know I couldn't give
- 10:41up two hours a week for you like I I just would not want to stand
- 10:45before God and say that. So I want to encourage you give
- 10:48it all to the Lord. I'm going to hasten through here
- 10:52now the the the rest of this Psalm 146.
- 10:55I called you save me and I will keep your decrease.
- 10:58This is actually been a really common verse all throughout
- 11:01Psalm 119 where the psalmist is like, hey God, I, I need your
- 11:06help. I want to follow you.
- 11:08I might die from this situation that I'm going through.
- 11:11So save me and I will follow you.
- 11:14I had my friend Roger just mentioned to me yesterday at the
- 11:18time of recording that he had a green light that had just come
- 11:23on and he felt like the Holy Spirit told him, Hey, wait for
- 11:26it. And sure enough, this car would
- 11:28just came flying through the intersection.
- 11:31And he was like, man, if I, if I had gone, if I hadn't listened
- 11:35to the Lord saying, Hey, hold back for a SEC.
- 11:37He, he said, I, I would have died and God saved me.
- 11:40And I'm, I'm thankful that the Lord looks out for us, obviously
- 11:44first and foremost our eternal souls, but then often he saves
- 11:47us even in the here and now. Verse 147 and 1:48, I see here
- 11:53that the psalmist says, God, I'm desperate.
- 11:56And so as a result of my desperation, I'm going to invest
- 12:02in the only thing that can really like, save or sustain me,
- 12:06which is your word. He says, I rise before dawn and
- 12:10cry out for help. I put my hope in your word.
- 12:14I've experienced this plenty of times over the last year.
- 12:18We're all wake up at like, you know, 435 o'clock.
- 12:24Not because I'm super spiritual and intended to do it, but
- 12:28because like I woke up, my brain started just running a mile a
- 12:31minute and I'm thinking about like hard situations at the
- 12:35church and things that people are going through and fights
- 12:38that people are in. And I'm God like, would you
- 12:41please give wisdom? Would you help there to be
- 12:44reconciliation? Would you give me wisdom so that
- 12:48I would know what I'm supposed to be saying?
- 12:50Lord, would you give humility that people would lay down their
- 12:54their arms and their, you know, puffed chest to just be able to
- 12:58say like, OK, yeah, Jesus forgave me.
- 13:00I can forgive this person and that it would be reciprocated.
- 13:04Like I, I have felt this where I say, God, I put my hope in your
- 13:09word because God, you're the only person that can fix things
- 13:14that are broken on the soul level.
- 13:19And so I, I want to encourage you, if you're in a time of
- 13:22desperation, maybe wake up a little early during the day and
- 13:27cry out to the Lord, spend some time in prayer.
- 13:30And can I tell you, I, I know that there is two things of like
- 13:36#1 there is power in prayer because the Lord that we're
- 13:42praying to is powerful. It's not that you have some
- 13:44great power as you pray. No, no, our Lord has power.
- 13:49And so when we call to him in prayer, he works.
- 13:53But God is not impressed by the amount of time that you spend in
- 13:58the word or in prayer. Like he's not impressed by, I
- 14:03would venture to say he's probably more impressed by the
- 14:07amount of time that the prayer or the word lives in you.
- 14:13So instead of being like, oh man, I spent two hours straight
- 14:16in Bible reading today. I'm really spiritual.
- 14:19How about if you read and you read for, you know, five, 10-15
- 14:23minutes, but one verse that was in there, maybe in Ephesians
- 14:28432, be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one
- 14:31another, just as God for Jesus sake has forgiven you.
- 14:36And if you just allow that to live in your heart throughout
- 14:39the day that each time that someone you know wrongs you or
- 14:44insults you or demeans you, you go what?
- 14:47I remember the verse that I read earlier today.
- 14:49And so I'm going to choose to forgive that person because I've
- 14:51been forgiven. Well, the Lord might use that in
- 14:55a wonderful way. Allow the word to spend all day
- 14:59in you, even more so than you spending all day in the word.
- 15:04As you pray and you ask the Lord for things, allow that to then
- 15:08influence how you live your day. So if you're like, hey, God use
- 15:12me to be a blessing to someone today and you pray that for two
- 15:15hours. Well, actually, you could have
- 15:18maybe prayed that in 5 minutes and then taken like an hour of
- 15:24your day and called someone that that needed some encouragement.
- 15:27Or you could go be a blessing to a, a neighbor and mow their
- 15:32lawn. Or you could, you know, come
- 15:34across someone that, that, that just needs encouragement, a
- 15:38helping hand, you know, maybe someone that's kind of down on
- 15:41their luck that you're able to provide some funds to any of
- 15:46those things God could use. I, I want to encourage you, just
- 15:49the action of spirituality isn't necessarily what God wants.
- 15:55And you can see that over and over again in the prophets that
- 15:58God says, I don't desire, like the sacrifices of bulls or
- 16:03goats. I don't want you observing the
- 16:04holy days like I want you to do right by other people.
- 16:07I want you to act lovingly. So he says, take away all this
- 16:11stuff, Just do what's right. And then I'll rejoice in in the
- 16:16sacrifices. And so I I think that that's
- 16:19something that we can often turn to.
- 16:21All right, So that's verse 147. Rise before dawn, cry out for
- 16:25help. I put my hope in your word.
- 16:27Verse 148, I'm awake through each watch of the night to
- 16:30meditate on your promise. Take time all throughout your
- 16:34day to meditate on the word of God that you bring it back up to
- 16:38mind and you go, OK, God. Yeah, I know you that you said
- 16:44be holy because I am holy. What does that mean for me
- 16:48today? What do I need to be set apart
- 16:51for today as a result of who you are and that you just choose to
- 16:56consistently think about that through the day when you read be
- 17:01reading with an intention to say I'm going to apply this
- 17:07throughout the rest of my day and you might not know at the
- 17:11beginning of the day everything that God will lead you to
- 17:14throughout the day. So the verse he leads you to
- 17:16meditate on might not be the one that you expect.
- 17:20Verse 149 in keeping with your faithful love, hear my voice
- 17:24Yahweh give me life in keeping with your justice.
- 17:28You can call out to the character of God to intervene
- 17:32when you have need and then as we end verses 150 and 151, those
- 17:37who pursue evil plans come near. They are far from your
- 17:40instruction that when trouble comes close to you, when trouble
- 17:44comes in people, verse 151 says you are near Yahweh, just like
- 17:50those who pursue evil plans come near.
- 17:52God is near and he says in all your commands are true.
- 17:57And so as you think about hardships being near you realize
- 18:01that God is always there, especially in times of trouble.
- 18:05And you can rely on what God has said to get you through the hard
- 18:10times in your life with that sick family member, with that
- 18:15troubled, you know, teen or young adult.
- 18:18God knows he cares about you. And so rely on his instruction,
- 18:23His way of doing things as you interact in his world.
- 18:27Well, thank you for tuning in today.
- 18:30Next episode is the third to the last.
- 18:36So we've got only three more episodes in Psalm 119.
- 18:39And we will have completed all 22 sections of Psalm 119.
- 18:45Thank you for joining us on this journey.
- 18:47Hope you have a wonderful day.
