- 0:01SPEAKER_00: The Apostles baptized believers in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: This episode follows that name through the book of Acts and considers the forgiveness, authority, and new beginning it represents.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Hello, Christians.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: This is Dallas Beecham.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Stand by for good news.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: A name can carry a history, a name can carry authority, and sometimes a name can open a door that nothing else can open.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: On the day of Pentecost, Peter did not leave baptism undefined.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: He said, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Why that name?
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Because Jesus died.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Jesus is the one God raised from the dead.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Jesus is the Christ, the anointed King, whom God made both Lord and Christ.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: His name identifies the one in whom we place our faith and in authority under which we obey.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Acts 4 and 12 declares, Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: As the gospel moved beyond Jerusalem, the apostles continued to baptize in that name.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: In Samaria, men and women believed Philip's preaching and were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: At the house of Cornelius, Peter commanded the Gentile believers to be baptized in the name of the Lord.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: In Ephesus, people who had received John's baptism heard the fuller truth and were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: This was not an accidental phrase used once and forgotten.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: From Jerusalem outward, the name of Jesus accompanied the gospel response.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Baptism is not a human achievement by which we earn salvation, it is the obedient answer of faith.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Colossians 2 and 12 describes believers as buried with him in baptism and says they are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: The power is not in human effort.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: The power belongs to God.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Some may wonder, what about everything I have already done?
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: What about my sincere prayers, my church experience, or the baptism I received years ago?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: The believers at Ephesus were not mocked for what they had previously understood.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: When greater light came, they responded.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Their new obedience did not dishonor their former sincerity.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: It completed what had been missed.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: The disciples Paul met at Ephesus had faithfully followed the teaching they had received from John the Baptist.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: But when Paul explained that there was more, they did not become offended or defend their former experience.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: They received the fuller message and were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Then when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them and they spoke with tongues.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Their former experience had brought them part of the way, but they were willing to keep walking when God showed them the next step.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Perhaps that is where you are today.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: You may be thankful for everything God has already done in your life.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Learning that there is more does not mean your former experience was meaningless.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: It means God loves you enough to lead you farther.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Like these disciples at Ephesus, you can receive the truth gladly.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Be baptized in the name of Jesus and receive the promise of the Holy Ghost.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: This is a hopeful lesson.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: God's truth is not given so we can win arguments about words.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: It is given so people can enter the promise.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: The name of Jesus is not a weapon to use against another believer.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: It is the saving name we are privileged to call upon.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Ananias told Saul, later the apostle Paul, Arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Saul had seen a heavenly light.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: He had heard the voice of Jesus.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: He had prayed and fasted, yet there was still a step of obedience before him.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Perhaps there is a step before you today.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Do not let pride, fear, or tradition close the door that Scripture has opened.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Search the book of Acts.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Follow the apostles from city to city.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Ask why they acted as they did.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Then remember this, the name they proclaimed is still powerful.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: The mercy it represents is still offered, and the door is still open.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: I hope today's message has touched your heart and causes you to have a good day.
