- 0:04Speaker 1: Now, Mikey, I'm still just getting to know you, but
- 0:07Speaker 1: I do believe that you like you like a laugh.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I just haven't heard like a cackle, like a hyena
- 0:12Speaker 1: cackle from here before.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:14Speaker 3: I do like a laugh, but it's got to be warranted,
- 0:16Speaker 3: a warranted laugh. Yeah, I'm not going to laugh at
- 0:18Speaker 3: What about laughter for wellness? I don't believe in wellness.
- 0:22Speaker 3: I don't believe in woo woo.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I don't believe in anything spiritual.
- 0:24Speaker 3: So I know what you're doing here, Brooklyn. I think
- 0:27Speaker 3: that you and I are going to.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Throw anything like I laugh, these random things and new
- 0:32Speaker 1: experiences in life.
- 0:34Speaker 3: So then strap yourself in.
- 0:36Speaker 1: It's more open than I.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Oh well, we have such a treat because joining us
- 0:40Speaker 2: in this studio, Sharon at Gambrell from Laughter Yoga, Sydney
- 0:45Speaker 2: is with us.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Hello Sharon, good morning everbody.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So this is a thing, Yeah.
- 0:51Speaker 3: This is a thing. Yes? Yes? What is what is
- 0:53Speaker 3: laughter yoga? Who? When did it become a thing? So
- 0:56Speaker 3: it became a thing around thirty years ago?
- 0:58Speaker 2: Thirty one years ago and murebi In, a medical doctor,
- 1:01Speaker 2: was researching the health benefits of laughter for his patients.
- 1:05Speaker 2: He found that when they were happy and in good spirits,
- 1:07Speaker 2: they would recover faster from their surgery from their medical treatment.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And he was looking at expanding on that. So his
- 1:14Speaker 2: wife is a yoga teacher, and they took three friends
- 1:17Speaker 2: to a park in Mumbai and they told jokes first
- 1:20Speaker 2: thing in the morning, and after two weeks of doing
- 1:21Speaker 2: that every day, they.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Ran out of jokes.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So he went back to his research and he found
- 1:26Speaker 2: that there's an amazing system in our body that the
- 1:29Speaker 2: body doesn't know the difference between real and simulated or
- 1:34Speaker 2: intentional laughter. So what we're going to be doing is
- 1:36Speaker 2: intentional laughter. And and I'll warn you up a little bit.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I know we only have a quick time. I used
- 1:41Speaker 2: you got.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Ready to go?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Can I say I did read? If you smile, let's
- 1:47Speaker 2: all smile.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Yes, yes, you actually feel happy.
- 1:51Speaker 2: So the muscles in your face go up and they
- 1:53Speaker 2: stimulate the imntal in your brain, which is your stress responder,
- 1:58Speaker 2: So the muscles sort of communicate with your brain. Just
- 2:02Speaker 2: say that you're happy, even if you're not. So the
- 2:04Speaker 2: premise of laughter yogurt is laughing from the inside out.
- 2:07Speaker 2: We intentionally laughed in a group and it becomes real
- 2:11Speaker 2: laughter very quickly.
- 2:13Speaker 3: On TV, but I've never done it.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, So I do it a little bit differently
- 2:18Speaker 2: because I am sort of cynical as well. I'm not happy,
- 2:21Speaker 2: go lucky, unhappy childhood. So I do this for my
- 2:24Speaker 2: health benefits.
- 2:26Speaker 3: That is, because we may have a cynic with us
- 2:28Speaker 3: here in the studio.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Many male cynics. We believe, banks it companies. So I
- 2:34Speaker 2: primarily do corporate work and a lot of any You've
- 2:39Speaker 2: got a bunch of suits and a corporate suits and
- 2:42Speaker 2: make men that look just like you and they have
- 2:46Speaker 2: their arms folded and I get my whip out and
- 2:49Speaker 2: become school mom.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Ah okay, okay, that's another show.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and also a higher pay grade than what I'm
- 2:57Speaker 2: getting today.
- 2:58Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 2:58Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 2:58Speaker 3: But but can you can you take us through some
- 3:01Speaker 3: of it?
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yes?
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yes, So as I say, doctor Tataria found that the
- 3:05Speaker 2: body doesn't know the difference between real or simulated laughter.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So if you're watching a comedian or a funny sitcom,
- 3:11Speaker 2: that's absolutely wonderful for your health. What we do we
- 3:14Speaker 2: produce in doorphins from our brain and we lower our
- 3:17Speaker 2: stress level cortisol, which I had a sixty five percent
- 3:20Speaker 2: reduction here, and I was on the show catalyst, and
- 3:23Speaker 2: we did some salivittests before and after a laugh.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I mean working in live radio, the adrenaline skyrocketing. Yeah,
- 3:29Speaker 3: it will be good. So let's do it, and you
- 3:32Speaker 3: can play along. If you're driving and listening right now,
- 3:35Speaker 3: are you able to stand up with we can? Over can.
- 3:38Speaker 2: So when I get a group and I'm doing a
- 3:40Speaker 2: one hour workshop or a thirty minute session, obviously I
- 3:43Speaker 2: do some physical warming up, and we do some deep
- 3:46Speaker 2: breathing exercises, and I do a lot of stress relief
- 3:49Speaker 2: and stress management at the beginning, but we don't have
- 3:52Speaker 2: time for that. So we're just going to start with
- 3:55Speaker 2: some breathing exercises. So without knocking anyone, And if you're
- 3:58Speaker 2: listening at home and you drive, keep your hands on
- 4:01Speaker 2: the wheel at all times.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Please join in. If you're on a bus or a train,
- 4:06Speaker 3: don't hit anyone in the face.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Did you see that guy in the tesla who was
- 4:10Speaker 2: asleep at the wheel the other day?
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeeah, put autopilot on.
- 4:15Speaker 2: That's it, okay, So we're just starting, so just following along,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and I want you to just breathe in deeply. So
- 4:20Speaker 2: when we're breathing deeply, we breathe in more oxygen, so
- 4:23Speaker 2: we still we feel more alert, yet more relaxed, and
- 4:26Speaker 2: that lasts for hours. So breathing in, breathing out, breath over,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and as we breathe out. This time, I just want
- 4:32Speaker 2: you to do it a little chuckle on the outbreath,
- 4:34Speaker 2: breathing in and breathing out, ha ha ha, breathing in,
- 4:39Speaker 2: smile and breathing out.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Ha ha.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And one more breathing in, breathing out, ha ha ha.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Now this time I want you to tighten everything, tighten
- 4:49Speaker 2: your face, your whole body, and then we're going to
- 4:51Speaker 2: let it go with the laugh. Just imagine all the stress,
- 4:53Speaker 2: anything that you're holding onto, goes out of your body
- 4:56Speaker 2: and goes out of the sky, out of your body,
- 4:58Speaker 2: so that your immune system works properly. So what we're
- 5:01Speaker 2: going to do is tighten everything up and then tighten
- 5:04Speaker 2: your face and then let it go with a laugh.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Tighten up.
- 5:11Speaker 2: It can be any laugh you like, there's no wrong.
- 5:13Speaker 2: One tighten up, tighten your face, breathing, let it go.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Then one more tighten up, breathing, tighten your face and
- 5:24Speaker 2: then let it go with a laugh. Okay, and one
- 5:28Speaker 2: more I want you to just as your hands go
- 5:30Speaker 2: up past your face, smile and as you reach up,
- 5:33Speaker 2: imagine you're a beautiful willow tree. And this is a
- 5:35Speaker 2: symbolic to going with the flow of life. Ready, smile,
- 5:39Speaker 2: breathing up and the light there, mikey and one more
- 5:44Speaker 2: smile breathing up, and.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And one last one breathing in. Smile. And so what
- 5:55Speaker 3: you do is you got it.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Can opponents of laughter yoga, there's the laughter exercises, which,
- 6:03Speaker 2: of course with simulated laughter or intentional laughter, it becomes
- 6:07Speaker 2: real in a group. If I've got twenty people or
- 6:09Speaker 2: one hundred people, it does become real very quickly. It's
- 6:12Speaker 2: breakdown the barriers. It's very good to lower your blood
- 6:15Speaker 2: pressure naturally.
- 6:17Speaker 3: It helps.
- 6:18Speaker 2: They did a study at Stanford University and they found
- 6:21Speaker 2: that thirty minutes on a treadmill was equivalent to ten
- 6:23Speaker 2: minutes of hearty laughter.
- 6:25Speaker 3: So just have a lot. So just have a lot.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Well, you want to check it out book your own
- 6:30Speaker 2: laughter yoga class.
