- 1:23Speaker 5: Don't say fuck far circle.
- 1:24Speaker 6: Josh Burhuru picks it up and shoots from the high slot.
- 1:27Speaker 6: I'll miss why Alexiak walks.
- 1:30Speaker 1: In high slot scores.
- 1:34Speaker 7: Shadey Alexiak rip swad toward the net through traffic. I
- 1:39Speaker 7: don't think Botombo ever saw it, and the Seattle crackt
- 1:42Speaker 7: retie the game three three fifteen twelve to play. In
- 1:46Speaker 7: the third O.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Was a McCann feed up to Alexiak two from the
- 1:49Speaker 3: half wall, and Alexiak took his time moving from his
- 1:52Speaker 3: right to his left side. He's left handed shot and
- 1:54Speaker 3: he shot back across the green to Montebo's glove side.
- 1:58Speaker 1: This game's not enough again.
- 2:00Speaker 6: Three then veneers winning it back for Seattle. There's Montour
- 2:05Speaker 6: right point.
- 2:06Speaker 7: Shot block McCann scoress Sharon McCann goals in three straight
- 2:13Speaker 7: and the Seattle Cracket come all the way back to
- 2:16Speaker 7: take a four to three lead twelve oh four to play.
- 2:20Speaker 3: In the third, a puck goes DDD up with the
- 2:22Speaker 3: blue line over to Montour, who gets a good quick
- 2:24Speaker 3: shot off. Montreal makes the block out and put the
- 2:27Speaker 3: puck drops right down to Jared McCann, who spins around,
- 2:30Speaker 3: puts the glove side on Sam montepontebaut three excuse me,
- 2:34Speaker 3: four to three Seattle.
- 2:35Speaker 5: That's it.
- 2:36Speaker 7: Picks up the puck right wing circle one thirty five
- 2:39Speaker 7: left it over time.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Here's Cawfield's shot scores on a move by.
- 2:45Speaker 8: Cold Coawfield put the circle and come showing the court
- 2:51Speaker 8: to me, ever so slightly goes upstairs hand the crack
- 2:58Speaker 8: in game a point football in over.
- 3:01Speaker 6: Time by mine more score in the ears, drops it
- 3:03Speaker 6: off to Montour. It'll skate left side, hand it off
- 3:06Speaker 6: to Stevenson in the circle and back up to the
- 3:09Speaker 6: line from on Toura Stevenson down low, everly trying.
- 3:12Speaker 7: Their shovel it in turn aside rebound. Stevenson stores.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Chandler.
- 3:19Speaker 7: Stevenson left circle on the power play.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Gives the cracking the lead back.
- 3:24Speaker 7: It's three two seventeen forty five left here.
- 3:27Speaker 1: The third oh.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Is every down that left side there, getting a good
- 3:31Speaker 3: shot on net, just to get the puck up front there,
- 3:33Speaker 3: and Stevenson picking it up and about finding the rebound
- 3:37Speaker 3: and beating Olmark to get the go ahead goal. Here
- 3:39Speaker 3: in the third period, three two.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Cracking in the ears drops it off to Montour, It'll
- 3:44Speaker 6: skate left side, hand it off to Stevenson in a
- 3:47Speaker 6: circle and back up to the line from Montura.
- 3:49Speaker 7: Stevenson down low, everly trying to shovel it in turn
- 3:53Speaker 7: aside rebound Stevenson stores Chandler Stevenson left circle on the
- 4:01Speaker 7: power play gives the crack in the lead back. It's
- 4:04Speaker 7: three two seventeen forty five left here.
- 4:07Speaker 1: The third oh.
- 4:08Speaker 3: It's every down that left side there, getting a good
- 4:11Speaker 3: shot on net, just to get the puck up front there,
- 4:13Speaker 3: and Stevenson picking it up and about finding the rebound
- 4:17Speaker 3: and beating Olmark to get the go ahead goal. Here
- 4:19Speaker 3: in the third period, three two cracking, Shane.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Pinto can put it away for the whole team.
- 4:25Speaker 7: Right handed shot Shane Pinto from the red line, carries
- 4:29Speaker 7: it over left side of the circle, now cuts back
- 4:32Speaker 7: to the slot, walks.
- 4:33Speaker 1: In, shoots, scores, and the Ottawa Senators.
- 4:40Speaker 7: Come back after the Kraken took the lead early in
- 4:44Speaker 7: the third.
- 4:47Speaker 6: They score.
- 4:49Speaker 7: Late in the third, survive a push from Seattle in overtime,
- 4:56Speaker 7: and get the win in the shootout by a fourth
- 4:58Speaker 7: racecore corner back to the line, tolling In holds it
- 5:01Speaker 7: in for Seattle. Across done schools fits Don from the
- 5:08Speaker 7: right side through heavy traffic in front. Stolars got ran into.
- 5:14Speaker 7: We'll see what this will be, but as of right
- 5:17Speaker 7: now the goal will stand. And it was Brandon Carlow
- 5:20Speaker 7: that actually pushed the Kraken defender into Stolars, That was
- 5:25Speaker 7: Javee Schwartz. So Carlo pushing Schwartz into his own goaltender.
- 5:31Speaker 6: That should not be goaltender interference. And the Kraken back
- 5:35Speaker 6: on top. Big hitters or house to begin.
- 5:41Speaker 1: On and they score the rebound. Four seconds into the
- 5:48Speaker 1: power play.
- 5:50Speaker 7: John Tavares won the draw, went right to the front
- 5:53Speaker 7: of the net. Kneelander took the shot and then he
- 5:56Speaker 7: buries a rebound. Three three were time and near signs
- 6:00Speaker 7: in the circle shot turn a side rebound a card.
- 6:04Speaker 1: What a same Oliver.
- 6:06Speaker 7: Reckman Larson down the slot to chord caught up piece
- 6:10Speaker 7: of it. It might have also been blocked by Matty
- 6:13Speaker 7: Veneers and the Kraken go to overtime right to left
- 6:17Speaker 7: far side. Ever leave now Mahura gets by Stoos. Josh
- 6:24Speaker 7: mahurah his first goal as a Seattle Kraken wins it
- 6:29Speaker 7: in overtime four three in Toronto.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Well and I'll start it back at the end the
- 6:36Speaker 3: cracking in form her as he got that buck behind
- 6:39Speaker 3: the net, came out with a great feed, deamping up
- 6:41Speaker 3: the side of the boards. He got it back to
- 6:43Speaker 3: him and got a breakaway out of it. Goes down
- 6:46Speaker 3: that right side, beat Stolars cracking four to three overtime win.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Bring on the final cake.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Joshmahura with his first goal sinds the twenty twenty two
- 6:57Speaker 4: and twenty three season. He went through one hundred and
- 6:59Speaker 4: four forty three straight NHL games without a goal, but
- 7:02Speaker 4: he is finally out of the wilderness in quite the
- 7:06Speaker 4: statement making win at Toronto to cap the first five
- 7:10Speaker 4: games with a Kraken at three to zero and two.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Mike Benton, now joined by Everett Fitzhugh and al Kiniski
- 7:17Speaker 4: Everets got TV again for tonight at Philadelphia. Back on
- 7:20Speaker 4: the radio side for Washington on Tuesday. Phila's great to
- 7:24Speaker 4: be doing this year the three man round table here
- 7:26Speaker 4: in Philly. It's my first time in this beloved city.
- 7:29Speaker 4: I gotta now ask you for porners, because you two
- 7:32Speaker 4: are the veterans here in this spot. Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 5: I mean, this is a good town, this Philly.
- 7:37Speaker 6: I remember the first year I missed this road trip
- 7:39Speaker 6: because I had COVID, and so year two was when
- 7:41Speaker 6: I came here for the first time and we were
- 7:43Speaker 6: here during the Super Bowl, and this was just it's
- 7:47Speaker 6: a really good town. I like this town. A lot
- 7:49Speaker 6: of great meet in this city. Al is just beside
- 7:53Speaker 6: himself with all of the the steaks and the cheese
- 7:58Speaker 6: steaks and all that here. But yeah, man, we're gonna
- 8:01Speaker 6: show you a good time. We're gonna show you a
- 8:02Speaker 6: good town the next few hours.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike, it's a great area around here as well.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Not only is there are there great restaurants and great
- 8:10Speaker 3: watering holes. You can also do a little retail therapy
- 8:13Speaker 3: as well. As I found out today there's some Inndocino
- 8:16Speaker 3: there's some state and liberty. There's a little bit of everything.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Little Lemon.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I'm not making the ever fits you in al Kaniski
- 8:22Speaker 4: money right now. I'm still on the budget here at
- 8:24Speaker 4: this point where I'm trying to kind of space it
- 8:26Speaker 4: out for the food and mean, trust me, if you
- 8:28Speaker 4: put a cheese steake in front of me, that might
- 8:30Speaker 4: be gone about probably four and a half minutes. And
- 8:32Speaker 4: we're getting into that good part of a town right
- 8:34Speaker 4: now to get that knocked out again. John Walton joins
- 8:37Speaker 4: us here in just a bit played by play voice
- 8:39Speaker 4: for the Washington Capitals Radio Network. Let's first jump into
- 8:42Speaker 4: what we learned from this past week. Two overtime losses
- 8:46Speaker 4: are in a shootout as well at Montreal and Ottawa,
- 8:50Speaker 4: and guys, easily this team could be five and zero
- 8:52Speaker 4: right now through five games. They have been that good
- 8:55Speaker 4: under Lain Lambert. But I think when you get through
- 8:58Speaker 4: the loss at Montreal, y'all in overtime, the shootout loss
- 9:02Speaker 4: at Ottawa where it was so close until Dylan Cousins
- 9:05Speaker 4: parked one and from fifty feet, the win at Montreal,
- 9:08Speaker 4: but the win at Toronto told me this, when you
- 9:11Speaker 4: get Anthony Stolars and other players talking in their room
- 9:16Speaker 4: about how fed up he was with the opposing team
- 9:20Speaker 4: the Kraken crashing his net all night long, making it miserable.
- 9:24Speaker 4: And then Joey Decoord down the other way is playing
- 9:28Speaker 4: cats like he's playing catch in his front yard, paraphrasing him.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen, you have a team identity now in
- 9:35Speaker 4: full force heading into Philadelphia. They are playing the exact
- 9:40Speaker 4: way Lane Lambert wants them to play. At three to
- 9:42Speaker 4: zero to two.
- 9:43Speaker 3: We talk about Anthony Stillars's comments after the game, and
- 9:46Speaker 3: it was one of the keys we talked about in
- 9:48Speaker 3: the pregame, which is getting bodies to the front of
- 9:49Speaker 3: the net. And you saw Mason Marchman do it intentional
- 9:53Speaker 3: or not, that's a different conversation. He saw Jaden Schwartz
- 9:56Speaker 3: do it as well. Clearly that was part of the
- 9:58Speaker 3: game plan and it paid off.
- 10:00Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think too. You know, going back to
- 10:01Speaker 6: that team identity. Listen, they're never going to admit it,
- 10:05Speaker 6: but there were times last year where you could tell
- 10:07Speaker 6: teams took the Kraken lightly and they weren't happy about
- 10:10Speaker 6: the krack and being.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Not happy about it.
- 10:12Speaker 6: So you come into this year, you you already establish
- 10:15Speaker 6: a defensive mind, a disciplined mind, a hard working mind,
- 10:21Speaker 6: and we're seeing that every day. And I think, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 6: for we talked to the lane every day before games,
- 10:26Speaker 6: and it seems like every game for the Kraken is
- 10:29Speaker 6: their best game of the season. Last night was our
- 10:31Speaker 6: best effort of the year until the next game, and
- 10:34Speaker 6: then that night's effort was the best effort of the year.
- 10:36Speaker 6: They're playing consistent style and I think for me, the
- 10:39Speaker 6: only real hiccup that I've been able to find is
- 10:43Speaker 6: that the third period leads. The Kracking have been tied
- 10:46Speaker 6: or ahead going into the third period of each game
- 10:49Speaker 6: this year, and they've blown four in a row, ultimately
- 10:54Speaker 6: going to overtime. But now they got the monkey off
- 10:57Speaker 6: their back with their with the leaves a couple of
- 10:58Speaker 6: nights ago, So they're playing their best hockey early on,
- 11:02Speaker 6: and you're just hoping that they can continue this throughout
- 11:05Speaker 6: the rest of the season.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's fun to talk about all the things
- 11:08Speaker 3: that are going right in efforts at the top. In fact,
- 11:11Speaker 3: I think it's really fun to talk about the things
- 11:12Speaker 3: that aren't going right, because it's a real small list,
- 11:15Speaker 3: you know. I think one thing I would add to
- 11:17Speaker 3: that list are face offs. I think it's an area
- 11:19Speaker 3: where you know there's certain certain sentiment are doing great.
- 11:23Speaker 3: I think Chandler Stevenson's been a north of fifty percent
- 11:26Speaker 3: most games, but I think most of the games as
- 11:28Speaker 3: a whole, they have the smaller percentage of face off
- 11:32Speaker 3: wins in the game, but they're finding out their ways
- 11:33Speaker 3: to get it to get it done. So if they
- 11:35Speaker 3: can improve that area, it's only going to improve puck management.
- 11:39Speaker 4: If I can get into Everett's point about the mistakes
- 11:41Speaker 4: that you want to clean up here in October, there's
- 11:43Speaker 4: a reason why they call it sloppy October, and it's
- 11:46Speaker 4: because can you find a way to stay out of
- 11:48Speaker 4: penalties late in the third period? Can you find a
- 11:50Speaker 4: way to insulate scoring chances against your goaltender out? Maybe
- 11:53Speaker 4: Grubauer wants that one back against Dylon Cousins are to tie,
- 11:55Speaker 4: but that's now in the rearview mirror. But you're going
- 11:58Speaker 4: to have some crazy endings and crazy twis and turns
- 12:00Speaker 4: here to games where teams don't make these same kind
- 12:03Speaker 4: of mistakes, say maybe in December or January like they
- 12:06Speaker 4: do in October or early November. I want to get
- 12:10Speaker 4: into team identity and it's not just a net play
- 12:13Speaker 4: that really distirred the pot against Toronto, and we can
- 12:15Speaker 4: now maybe expect this consistently, game after game after game.
- 12:20Speaker 4: This is the way that Elaine Lambert team wants to play.
- 12:23Speaker 4: But it's also the scoring upfront. Vince Dunn's got five
- 12:26Speaker 4: points in five games. Brandon Montour when he is back,
- 12:29Speaker 4: and hoping that he comes back also at the right time.
- 12:31Speaker 4: We wish him well here for what he is going
- 12:33Speaker 4: through right now with the family in his private matter.
- 12:35Speaker 4: But besides that, you've got players all across the board
- 12:38Speaker 4: who are sniffing point per game on this team. Jared McCann,
- 12:42Speaker 4: Matt Eveniers is not too far behind, Jaden Schwartz, even
- 12:46Speaker 4: Shane Wright as well, who look fantastic all of a
- 12:50Speaker 4: sudden playing with Yannie Newman and Mason Marchmen. So again
- 12:54Speaker 4: it's early, but there have been other seasons where we
- 12:58Speaker 4: have been raising a lot more question and then defining
- 13:01Speaker 4: what is the affirmative here for this team, And again
- 13:04Speaker 4: we get back to it. If you can't find that
- 13:06Speaker 4: top goal score forty goals, fifty goals in the summer,
- 13:09Speaker 4: what can you do, you spread it out, and so
- 13:12Speaker 4: far we're seeing this consistently top to bottom in the
- 13:15Speaker 4: Kraken lineup.
- 13:15Speaker 6: Yeah, and you know, I know a lot of people
- 13:18Speaker 6: are tired of talking about year two when this team
- 13:20Speaker 6: made the playoffs. Trust me, I get it. Leave it
- 13:22Speaker 6: in the past. It's over. We're moving on. But when
- 13:26Speaker 6: you go back to the most successful time in Seattle
- 13:30Speaker 6: Crack in brief history, what were they doing. They were
- 13:34Speaker 6: scoring by committee. They were the hardest working team in
- 13:37Speaker 6: the NHL. Freddie Gadreau even said it when we interviewed
- 13:40Speaker 6: him earlier in preseason. He goes, you know, I remember
- 13:43Speaker 6: with Minnesota, all those games we played against the Kraken.
- 13:48Speaker 6: You knew you were in one. You knew it was
- 13:50Speaker 6: going to be a battle. That's the type of game
- 13:53Speaker 6: this team needs to play, given their personnel, given their makeup,
- 13:57Speaker 6: if they're going to be the hardest working team every
- 13:59Speaker 6: single night, if they're gonna grind and shut guys down,
- 14:02Speaker 6: if they're gonna continue to play discipline like we've seen
- 14:05Speaker 6: through the first five games. Never mind you've got points
- 14:08Speaker 6: in five straight. I cannot point to a single game,
- 14:12Speaker 6: a single extended period of time so far, this season
- 14:16Speaker 6: where there's been any glaring mistakes. You know, there may
- 14:19Speaker 6: be one over committal here or there. You talked about
- 14:22Speaker 6: the Grubauer goal. You want to clean up face off,
- 14:25Speaker 6: but there's not been one man they played bad for
- 14:30Speaker 6: an entire game, for an entire period. There has not
- 14:33Speaker 6: been a single time this year so far that I
- 14:35Speaker 6: can point to this team not being at or close
- 14:39Speaker 6: to their best. And that's what you're gonna have to
- 14:41Speaker 6: do to have success.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Yeah, they've had hiccups along the way. I think that's
- 14:45Speaker 3: the way I would put it through a game. There
- 14:46Speaker 3: have been hiccups. And Mike, you know, you talked about
- 14:49Speaker 3: this team's identity and the phrase that we always hate
- 14:52Speaker 3: to use scoring scoring by committee. Well here we are.
- 14:55Speaker 3: We're five games in. You got Vince done with a
- 14:58Speaker 3: point of game. He's played all five games. You gotta
- 15:00Speaker 3: give it to Brandon Montur he's only played four because
- 15:02Speaker 3: he missed him, but he's got four points, so he's
- 15:04Speaker 3: a point of game.
- 15:05Speaker 1: But look at this.
- 15:06Speaker 3: You got seven guys that are at four points right now.
- 15:09Speaker 3: That includes every Montor Schwartz, Marchmont, stevenson Wright and the Can.
- 15:17Speaker 3: That's depth, and not only that too, but those top
- 15:20Speaker 3: two guys that I mentioned in Dunn and montor defenseman.
- 15:23Speaker 3: So you knowly you're getting scoring by committee. You're getting
- 15:26Speaker 3: a lot of it from the blue line, and I
- 15:28Speaker 3: think it's one of the largest percentages in the league
- 15:30Speaker 3: that's coming from the blue line.
- 15:31Speaker 4: How does that depth get tested even more? And how
- 15:34Speaker 4: can the Kranken answer that challenge to the Beacon Plumbing
- 15:37Speaker 4: hot line? We go right now. Joining us now on
- 15:40Speaker 4: Crack and Weekly are a steam friend John Walton, veteran
- 15:42Speaker 4: play by play announcer on the Capitol's radio network, also
- 15:46Speaker 4: his flagship station one oh six seventh the Fan WJFK.
- 15:50Speaker 1: John, Great to have you.
- 15:51Speaker 4: And now that Alex Ovechkin has to pass Wayne Gretzky's
- 15:54Speaker 4: all time goal scoring record, what's consuming everyone's mind now
- 15:59Speaker 4: around this team for this season?
- 16:01Speaker 1: Nothing. We're just going home. That's it. I you know,
- 16:06Speaker 1: it's wild. I mean we had a you know, with
- 16:09Speaker 1: where we were as far as the last season. I
- 16:13Speaker 1: mean we got to about March and there was a time,
- 16:16Speaker 1: I mean going back to the beginning, guys where we
- 16:19Speaker 1: had in November. We're in Salt Lake and Alex has
- 16:23Speaker 1: two goals third period caps are winning handily. Everything's good,
- 16:28Speaker 1: and then Alex breaks his leg and we stayed over
- 16:31Speaker 1: in Salt Lake and it was just we went out
- 16:34Speaker 1: after the game and get something to eat and we're
- 16:35Speaker 1: just sitting there looking at each other like we don't
- 16:37Speaker 1: know how to do this, Like we never seen this,
- 16:39Speaker 1: None of us have ever seen this for a long term.
- 16:42Speaker 1: At that point, we didn't really know what the injury was.
- 16:44Speaker 1: And watching him come back and do what he did,
- 16:47Speaker 1: only out for six weeks, come back at the record
- 16:49Speaker 1: and mold it down at the end like he did
- 16:52Speaker 1: not leave any room for maybe this happens this year
- 16:55Speaker 1: or maybe it doesn't. A couple of goals against Chicago
- 16:59Speaker 1: and could have had four, and then getting it against
- 17:01Speaker 1: the Islanders in the way he did, tacked on a
- 17:03Speaker 1: couple for good measure to get eight ninety seven at
- 17:05Speaker 1: the end. There was definitely an emotional lift that surrounded
- 17:08Speaker 1: this team that you know. It's funny because sometimes you'll
- 17:11Speaker 1: get asked the questions, oh, is it a distraction? Well,
- 17:13Speaker 1: no it's not. I mean it's actually the opposite of that.
- 17:16Speaker 1: But to that end, now that you're here, what do
- 17:20Speaker 1: you do for an encore when you don't have this
- 17:23Speaker 1: unbelievable historic achievement that was kind of this symbiotic relationship
- 17:27Speaker 1: between the Caps going to one hundred and eleven points
- 17:30Speaker 1: and Alex getting the record. And I think we've seen
- 17:33Speaker 1: at least early on that you know, this team is
- 17:36Speaker 1: still as advertised. They're running it back with twenty of
- 17:39Speaker 1: the twenty three guys that were here last year. I
- 17:41Speaker 1: don't feel and I'm saying this more as a representative
- 17:45Speaker 1: of what I've heard in the room from Logan Thompson
- 17:47Speaker 1: has been vocal and Spencer Carberry has mentioned it. You
- 17:50Speaker 1: know that a lot of people think, oh, well, you know,
- 17:51Speaker 1: the CAP's over achieved. They're really not that interesting anymore.
- 17:55Speaker 1: You know, if you don't have the record, what's going on.
- 17:58Speaker 1: This team is still good. The ultimately think they've got
- 18:01Speaker 1: to find a way to get through Carolina. They did
- 18:03Speaker 1: not do that in the second round last year. They
- 18:05Speaker 1: will ultimately if they want to put together a deep run,
- 18:08Speaker 1: they got to get by Carolina because it's the way
- 18:09Speaker 1: the playoffs are set up. So there are still a
- 18:13Speaker 1: work in progress, but they are strong. One to twelve
- 18:16Speaker 1: up front, one to six on d and one and
- 18:17Speaker 1: two in the net. There are no holes here. This
- 18:19Speaker 1: is one of the best defensive teams in the NHL.
- 18:22Speaker 1: They don't give up much at five on five. They're
- 18:24Speaker 1: tough to beat. And they have come out of the
- 18:27Speaker 1: blocks not scoring a ton, but they are scoring enough,
- 18:31Speaker 1: and you know, been all right on the road. They've
- 18:33Speaker 1: got this cushion of home games involving the crack in
- 18:37Speaker 1: this week where you know, in the middle of five
- 18:39Speaker 1: or six at home and then things start to get
- 18:42Speaker 1: a little more serious. But they're you know, they're holding
- 18:45Speaker 1: their own and I think everybody believes in this room
- 18:48Speaker 1: that they are not only a playoff team, but a
- 18:51Speaker 1: team that has a deep run in them. But they
- 18:54Speaker 1: still have to get to I think that next level
- 18:57Speaker 1: in order to do that.
- 18:59Speaker 6: John to go back to OVI for a second. Take
- 19:01Speaker 6: us back to that run. I mean, the city, the
- 19:05Speaker 6: fan base for you personally, I mean, I can only
- 19:10Speaker 6: imagine in Seattle, you go back to the home run
- 19:13Speaker 6: race of what was that ninety eight Maguire and Sosa
- 19:16Speaker 6: and I think Griffy was in it.
- 19:17Speaker 1: For for a while.
- 19:18Speaker 5: But just give folks.
- 19:21Speaker 6: In Seattle an idea of just what that was like.
- 19:25Speaker 5: And then for you.
- 19:26Speaker 6: Personally to have that moment on your reel, on on
- 19:31Speaker 6: your resume of now being able to to tell your grandkids,
- 19:36Speaker 6: to have your kids tell their grandkids.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Man, you know Grandpa.
- 19:39Speaker 6: John was there when What was that like for all
- 19:44Speaker 6: parties involved?
- 19:45Speaker 1: Yeah, put Grandpa to bed and change his night for it. Yeah,
- 19:49Speaker 1: for sure. I'm older than you guys, so I can
- 19:52Speaker 1: say that. You know, it was wild. It was just this,
- 19:57Speaker 1: It was about March. I mean, most of my time
- 20:00Speaker 1: his fifteen seasons here now and there really had There
- 20:04Speaker 1: wasn't much of a time where you know, I was here.
- 20:07Speaker 1: You know, he was in the threes when I got here,
- 20:10Speaker 1: so I didn't get them all, but I've had the
- 20:11Speaker 1: majority of him. And you know, four hundred becomes five
- 20:15Speaker 1: hundred becomes six hundred, and there's always this talk could
- 20:17Speaker 1: he do it? Could he do it? And sometimes the
- 20:20Speaker 1: answer would be oh yeah, and then other times it
- 20:22Speaker 1: would be oh, absolutely not, And it just depended on
- 20:24Speaker 1: which talking head and what national person was saying it.
- 20:28Speaker 1: And you know, then about the time he got the
- 20:30Speaker 1: seven hundred New Jersey a few years ago, you're like, listen,
- 20:33Speaker 1: like this is one hundred and ninety out now, Like
- 20:35Speaker 1: this is starting to feel like it could happen, and
- 20:38Speaker 1: the production through the course of these last couple of
- 20:41Speaker 1: years to you know, be approaching fifty goals at the
- 20:45Speaker 1: age he's at where Gretzki in the same timeframe was getting,
- 20:49Speaker 1: you know, fifteen, This just doesn't happen. And he just
- 20:53Speaker 1: kept throwing him in the net. And the way he
- 20:55Speaker 1: started last year, it wasn't a matter of isn't going
- 20:59Speaker 1: to happen? Is like I felt like it was going
- 21:00Speaker 1: to happen by Christmas because he was leading the league
- 21:03Speaker 1: there at the time he got hurt, was right at
- 21:05Speaker 1: the top. But it's been this all consuming kind of thing.
- 21:09Speaker 1: It almost feels like, you know when you're anticipating Christmas
- 21:12Speaker 1: or something and you're you're whether it's family or president
- 21:16Speaker 1: you're hoping for as a kid, and then there's almost
- 21:18Speaker 1: this remorse like, well, well what do we do now?
- 21:21Speaker 1: Like it's all I've known, like the whole time I've
- 21:23Speaker 1: been here. But it was amazing, and I think really
- 21:27Speaker 1: from March we were in California and you could see
- 21:31Speaker 1: that he was starting to heat up, and you really
- 21:33Speaker 1: felt like, Okay, I think it's going to happen. There
- 21:35Speaker 1: were little lulls here and there, but you know when
- 21:38Speaker 1: it really became a parent. You know, he tied the
- 21:40Speaker 1: record at home, and it would have been amazing because
- 21:43Speaker 1: he was this close against Chicago to getting a hat
- 21:45Speaker 1: trick and maybe even four and doing it in front
- 21:47Speaker 1: of the home fans. It would have been nice. Yeah,
- 21:50Speaker 1: But you know, ultimately for those who love the game
- 21:54Speaker 1: like we all do, to be just in the building.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Funny enough, I Matthew darsh has been a friend for
- 22:00Speaker 1: a long time. He was he played in Hershey when
- 22:02Speaker 1: I was there, and now is the gem of the Islanders.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Funny enough, he was there that day with Tampa Bay. Yeah,
- 22:09Speaker 1: because the entire staff had come out. They were playing
- 22:12Speaker 1: the Rangers, and then they all made the trip because hey, listen, like, guys,
- 22:15Speaker 1: we got to go see this. I mean we're here practically.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Uh So all the you know, John Cooper was there
- 22:20Speaker 1: and all, and Julian Breesebaugh and all the Tampa Bay guys,
- 22:24Speaker 1: and he just had this moment and you felt like
- 22:26Speaker 1: it was going to happen. But you know, it's a
- 22:29Speaker 1: day game, and you know, just kind of getting into
- 22:31Speaker 1: it and then the second period of powerplay comes and
- 22:33Speaker 1: I just remember, like my heart was in my throat.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I was like, this could be it, like right here,
- 22:37Speaker 1: Like I remember watching on ESPN when Gary Thorn and
- 22:40Speaker 1: Bill Clement called it when Gretzky passed Gordy and I
- 22:43Speaker 1: was in college and I never could have imagined being
- 22:47Speaker 1: in that moment or being one of the guys that
- 22:50Speaker 1: got to call the next one. And honestly, I don't
- 22:54Speaker 1: know if this is ever getting brought not in my lifetime,
- 22:57Speaker 1: I'm never going to see it. But you know, I
- 23:00Speaker 1: I just I don't know that it's going to happen again.
- 23:02Speaker 1: But man to be there and just it was so perfect,
- 23:05Speaker 1: Like whether you're you're Joe b or your me Joe
- 23:07Speaker 1: Benanadi r TV guy here the only thing you hoped
- 23:10Speaker 1: for with all these milestones that have happened, you know,
- 23:12Speaker 1: whether rolling over the odometer six hundred seve hundred, eight hundred,
- 23:16Speaker 1: it was pleased for the love of God, let it
- 23:18Speaker 1: be clean. Yeah, no deflection, No, I mean six hundred
- 23:25Speaker 1: was put the fear of God in me. Because we
- 23:27Speaker 1: were playing Winnipeg and Hallibuck was in net and it
- 23:30Speaker 1: was a scramble in front and he goes to it
- 23:33Speaker 1: and there's just that moment it hesitations us. I'm pretty
- 23:35Speaker 1: sure he got it. I think so, and you're just
- 23:38Speaker 1: oh my god, Devin hundred was was clean, but it
- 23:41Speaker 1: was quick. It was a third period of a game
- 23:43Speaker 1: with the capture losing in New Jersey. It was a
- 23:44Speaker 1: day game, and it just all of a sudden. He
- 23:46Speaker 1: hadn't scored in eight games. Yeah, and all of a
- 23:47Speaker 1: sudden it's there and boom, Like everyone has been kind
- 23:50Speaker 1: of different. Eight ninety five was beautiful. It was exactly
- 23:54Speaker 1: if you could have drawn it up, if you could
- 23:57Speaker 1: have said, I want a cross ice feed from I
- 23:59Speaker 1: don't care who it is, winding up Vintage in the office,
- 24:04Speaker 1: no doubt or blow them away. It was perfect. And
- 24:09Speaker 1: you when you're on the call and you're just saying,
- 24:11Speaker 1: it's like you see it. If they said, if this
- 24:12Speaker 1: goes in, I'm gonna be okay with that, and it was.
- 24:17Speaker 1: And you know, I was happy with mine. I know
- 24:19Speaker 1: Joe was happy with his, and we're all just like
- 24:21Speaker 1: you just try to give the magnitude of the moment
- 24:24Speaker 1: what it deserves and hope that it resonates. And that's
- 24:27Speaker 1: all we can do, right, I mean, you know, you
- 24:29Speaker 1: know how it is. I mean, it's just for everything
- 24:31Speaker 1: that happens. I mean, you just want to give credence
- 24:33Speaker 1: to the moment and then in my mind, just get
- 24:35Speaker 1: out of the way and just you know, let you know,
- 24:38Speaker 1: the speeches and Gretzky and Ov and the game stops
- 24:40Speaker 1: and all of the wonderfulness it was happening had nothing
- 24:43Speaker 1: to do with us, But being able to watch that,
- 24:45Speaker 1: I'll never forget it. It was wonderful. My son was
- 24:48Speaker 1: there just to be able to have that moment happen.
- 24:54Speaker 1: It didn't matter where, it didn't matter who the goalie was,
- 24:56Speaker 1: it didn't matter who the other team was. It was
- 24:58Speaker 1: just this great celebration of our great game, and I'm
- 25:00Speaker 1: so glad I got to be a small part of it.
- 25:02Speaker 6: A lot of folks in Pittsburgh will tell you that
- 25:04Speaker 6: when the Penguins won all those Cups, they've never done
- 25:07Speaker 6: it on home ice, and a number of fans are like, man,
- 25:10Speaker 6: the Pens couldn't have given me one cup on home ice.
- 25:13Speaker 6: Obviously the record was great. It was a day game
- 25:17Speaker 6: on Long Island. I mean, the moment is already a ten,
- 25:21Speaker 6: But is it like a nine point seven because it
- 25:24Speaker 6: wasn't in DC, or it doesn't matter the moment happened,
- 25:28Speaker 6: and it's now going to be etched in history.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I am tremendously fortunate that between when I was in
- 25:35Speaker 1: Hershey and we won three Cups there and then I
- 25:39Speaker 1: got to be part of one here that winning at
- 25:43Speaker 1: home is special. I got to do that once with Hershey.
- 25:45Speaker 1: The other two are on the road, and then we
- 25:47Speaker 1: were in Vegas for this one. Here it is there
- 25:50Speaker 1: is something special about and this was exactly the same
- 25:53Speaker 1: because you know, Nick Baxtrom came back and tj Oshi
- 25:56Speaker 1: came back, and you know, there are all these guys
- 25:58Speaker 1: in the room and Tom Wilson was you know know
- 26:00Speaker 1: we the best. My favorite interview with Tommy ever, and
- 26:02Speaker 1: I've had a bunch of them. Yeah, just you know,
- 26:05Speaker 1: so appreciative, like and he and Dylan Strom. You couldn't
- 26:07Speaker 1: have picked two guys that would love to who can
- 26:10Speaker 1: appreciate the moment. Willie who's been here for you know,
- 26:12Speaker 1: Willie's going to be a captain here when over retires,
- 26:15Speaker 1: and being able to kind of almost felt like a
- 26:17Speaker 1: bit of a torch passing. And Dylan Strom, who's you know,
- 26:20Speaker 1: a stats guy and and loves the game so much.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I mean, they appreciated it. Having that moment on the
- 26:26Speaker 1: road is okay because selfishly, you know, you're you're on
- 26:31Speaker 1: that bus together going to the plane, and like, I mean,
- 26:33Speaker 1: if you're gonna win a cup and you're not going
- 26:35Speaker 1: to do it at home, friends, by the way, do
- 26:36Speaker 1: it in Vegas. Yes, that that wasn't terrible. But to
- 26:43Speaker 1: have that moment with your teammates and your your workmates,
- 26:47Speaker 1: uh and your you know, our pr staff and our
- 26:50Speaker 1: our broadcast staff and all of that, there is something
- 26:53Speaker 1: special to it. To your point, though, could it Would
- 26:57Speaker 1: it have been great to do it at home for
- 26:59Speaker 1: the cup? Yes, would have been great to do it
- 27:00Speaker 1: at home, yes, But there's actually I think two such
- 27:03Speaker 1: to it. I would have loved to have seen him
- 27:05Speaker 1: do it at home because I think they would have
- 27:06Speaker 1: burned the building down. It would have been unbelievable. But
- 27:09Speaker 1: it would also you know, it is nice from a
- 27:12Speaker 1: selfish perspective. It's just this moment that felt, hey, like
- 27:15Speaker 1: this happened and we were all here for it, and
- 27:17Speaker 1: it's just this very almost an intimate level of hey,
- 27:21Speaker 1: we got to do this really cool thing. And it
- 27:24Speaker 1: was just the fifty five sixty people that were on
- 27:26Speaker 1: the plane. Both are good. I was just glad that
- 27:30Speaker 1: you got to be a part of it.
- 27:32Speaker 4: I can't wait here for the book when John, you're
- 27:34Speaker 4: all done with your career and we get to start
- 27:36Speaker 4: to see the stories about what happened in Vegas. But
- 27:38Speaker 4: then again, whatever happens in Vegas days in Vegas, we've
- 27:41Speaker 4: already learned that here throughout the entire year.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I'm not much of a writer, probably be a comic book,
- 27:45Speaker 1: but we'll do the best. I'll tell you what.
- 27:48Speaker 4: We're saving this here for your autobiography, and we can't
- 27:51Speaker 4: wait for the stories because John, we know what happens
- 27:53Speaker 4: in Vegas stays in Vegas. But maybe it will stay
- 27:56Speaker 4: that way. Of course, it's there for a reason. John
- 27:58Speaker 4: Walton joining us again by play announcer on the Capitol's
- 28:01Speaker 4: radio network here on Cracking Weekly. And let's get onto
- 28:06Speaker 4: a player who is starting to really grow it in
- 28:08Speaker 4: front of our very eyes, offensively and part of the
- 28:12Speaker 4: culture for Spencer Carberry being laid down. This guy who
- 28:16Speaker 4: really is developing and benefiting from this A young guy
- 28:20Speaker 4: at six six, two forty seven and built like a warehouse.
- 28:23Speaker 4: His name is Alexei Protus. At twenty four years of age.
- 28:26Speaker 4: He's off to a great start. I recall watching him
- 28:28Speaker 4: in Prince Albert in the Western Hockey League, where he
- 28:31Speaker 4: was absolutely dominant. He had thirty goals last season. So
- 28:35Speaker 4: what's the ceiling for Alexi Protus this year?
- 28:38Speaker 1: I don't think he has won Mike. We were in
- 28:42Speaker 1: Long Island recently and we had asked Ryan Leonard about
- 28:46Speaker 1: him because they both had scored in that game. And Leonard,
- 28:50Speaker 1: who for being a rookie, certainly is good with a
- 28:54Speaker 1: turn of phrase and is pretty witty. He said he
- 28:56Speaker 1: was built in a laboratory, and I do believe that
- 29:00Speaker 1: to be true. Almost we are scouring Belarus to see
- 29:03Speaker 1: if there's any more relatives. We've got heally in our
- 29:06Speaker 1: system at six foot six. If there's any cousins or
- 29:10Speaker 1: distant relatives we can recruit, we're going to try. He's
- 29:14Speaker 1: phenomenal and we knew he would be a good player.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I don't know, at least when I saw him in
- 29:21Speaker 1: Hershey a couple of years ago and they were running
- 29:24Speaker 1: to the Cup and I kind of got to tag
- 29:26Speaker 1: along and be the sideline reporter and I got to
- 29:28Speaker 1: know him during that time, and he's such a wonderful
- 29:32Speaker 1: human being and just a delight to be around in
- 29:34Speaker 1: the room. And his brother is the same way, and
- 29:38Speaker 1: to be able to have that, I don't know that
- 29:41Speaker 1: there is a ceiling. I mean, thirty goals seems about right.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Maybe more defensively, I mean, you know, I heard Jeff
- 29:49Speaker 1: Merrick recently as podcasts, you know, pitching him as a
- 29:51Speaker 1: potential selky guy as a best defense before it, and
- 29:55Speaker 1: he's good. It's just that usually those are sentiment, right.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I mean, Patrese Bergeron took it pretty much every year,
- 29:59Speaker 1: and I can't remember. I mean, I'm sure there's been
- 30:01Speaker 1: a few, you know, in my lifetime, but not usually
- 30:04Speaker 1: it's a center Maan. I'd like to think that Wingers
- 30:06Speaker 1: would get some love. He certainly deserves it, and I
- 30:09Speaker 1: think when you've got a guy of his caliber, I mean,
- 30:12Speaker 1: this team's gonna be building around him for a long
- 30:14Speaker 1: time to come. The contract for a Vatkins up at
- 30:16Speaker 1: the end of the year, where we don't know what
- 30:18Speaker 1: that's gonna be. Carlson's up at the end of the year.
- 30:20Speaker 1: We don't know what's happening there either, But you know,
- 30:23Speaker 1: the changing of the guard is coming soon and Alexei
- 30:26Speaker 1: Protest is gonna be a big part of it. Spencer
- 30:28Speaker 1: Carberry's gonna be a big part of it. You mentioned him.
- 30:31Speaker 1: The only coach to ever win Coach of the Year
- 30:33Speaker 1: echl Ahl NHL, And again, just a lot of the
- 30:37Speaker 1: culture and a lot of what goes on here. Guys
- 30:40Speaker 1: come from other places, they come here and they stay,
- 30:42Speaker 1: and a lot of them. Whether it was Dylan Strom,
- 30:46Speaker 1: I still can't believe that Chicago said now we're good
- 30:48Speaker 1: here when he was in RFA. He's led this team
- 30:50Speaker 1: in scoring three years in a row. Logan Thompson he
- 30:54Speaker 1: started a year on his deal and wasn't making a
- 30:55Speaker 1: million bucks in Vegas, and he goes thirty one and
- 30:57Speaker 1: six last year this organization and goes out and finds
- 31:00Speaker 1: guys that they see something that other organizations don't. Rasmus
- 31:05Speaker 1: Sandin's another one. Oh, it's just a power PLAYU guy.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Now he's a terrific two way defenseman now and was
- 31:10Speaker 1: brought along here and developed and you know, this organization,
- 31:14Speaker 1: it's no accident that they are where they are right now,
- 31:17Speaker 1: even not having all these first round picks and picking
- 31:20Speaker 1: late in the first round for basically two decades is
- 31:23Speaker 1: that they identify guys they want. They get some sleepers
- 31:26Speaker 1: in the draft, they identify players that now, this guy,
- 31:30Speaker 1: you know, the organization sours on him, and then suddenly
- 31:32Speaker 1: they find a place in Washington for him. And that's
- 31:34Speaker 1: been going on here a long time. So it's a
- 31:37Speaker 1: fun culture to be a part of and I think
- 31:39Speaker 1: that's why they win a lot of hockey games.
- 31:41Speaker 4: John, for the few moments we have left to your list,
- 31:43Speaker 4: touch on the Philadelphia Flyers. Of course you see them
- 31:45Speaker 4: here in the Eastern Conference and from the twenty thousand
- 31:48Speaker 4: foot view, they've undergone a coaching change. Rick Tackett is
- 31:51Speaker 4: in this season. What are the Flyers going to be
- 31:54Speaker 4: all about.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I think they're going to have a tough time making
- 31:56Speaker 1: the playoffs, but I think that they're coming. I mean,
- 31:59Speaker 1: I think they're you know, Matt Famieachkoff as we've seen
- 32:01Speaker 1: another of him, He's going to be a star for them.
- 32:04Speaker 1: They're starting to turn the corner. But they're a team
- 32:06Speaker 1: that I think that you know, in this division, it's Carolina,
- 32:09Speaker 1: New Jersey and Washington and I think everything else will
- 32:11Speaker 1: kind of filtered after that. But tough to play against.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Rick Todget's going to get them to win. I suspect
- 32:16Speaker 1: they're going to be a load here in the years
- 32:18Speaker 1: to come.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Well, John, we always look forward to these conversations. You've
- 32:21Speaker 4: done phenomenal work throughout the years. And congratulations again on
- 32:24Speaker 4: a call for the Ages this last season Alex Ovechkin
- 32:27Speaker 4: breaking Wayne Gretzky's all time goal scoring record. You'll have
- 32:31Speaker 4: that forever. But again, always appreciate your insight here with us.
- 32:34Speaker 4: You're always welcome back on and we'll look forward to
- 32:36Speaker 4: getting you back on once again. Thanks John.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Thatlla's great to chat with you always, and we get
- 32:41Speaker 1: a lot of time in Seattle this year when we
- 32:42Speaker 1: come that way in January. That's a good thing. We're
- 32:44Speaker 1: looking forward to it. So thanks very much.
- 32:46Speaker 4: All right, great to hear from John Walton, good friend
- 32:48Speaker 4: of ours here for the Crack and Audio Network, long
- 32:50Speaker 4: time play by play man for the Washington Capitals Radio Network.
- 32:53Speaker 4: He and evera fits you have the Cincinnati Connections. So
- 32:56Speaker 4: I was a bit outnumbered on that one two cyclone
- 33:00Speaker 4: in one thunder or one aces broadcast as well. John's
- 33:03Speaker 4: an absolute beauty. I love talking to the guy.
- 33:06Speaker 6: Yeah, John is one of my favorite people. In this business,
- 33:09Speaker 6: and I will always be forever indebted to John.
- 33:12Speaker 5: He gave me my.
- 33:13Speaker 6: First opportunity to put on an NHL headset. I got
- 33:17Speaker 6: to call a Capital's Bruins preseason game the year after
- 33:22Speaker 6: they won the Cup. So they had just won the
- 33:24Speaker 6: Cup in Vegas, and then the very next game the
- 33:28Speaker 6: Capitals played, although it was preseason, was their first preseason
- 33:31Speaker 6: game against Boston. So he gave me that opportunity. I
- 33:34Speaker 6: will forever be grateful for him. Like you and I, Mike,
- 33:37Speaker 6: he came up through the minors twelve fifteen plus years
- 33:41Speaker 6: in the Coast and then in the American League as well.
- 33:44Speaker 6: So when you look at guys around the league who
- 33:46Speaker 6: get it, he's the guy that gets it, and and
- 33:49Speaker 6: I love him dearly.
- 33:50Speaker 4: That's one of the guys that I really admired coming
- 33:53Speaker 4: up the ladder in the EHL because he had grinded
- 33:56Speaker 4: so hard coming from Cincinnati and then into hers she
- 34:00Speaker 4: and then getting the Washington job, and then wasn't just
- 34:03Speaker 4: a guy who you know, called play by play and
- 34:05Speaker 4: just went home. I mean, you were very much involved
- 34:07Speaker 4: here on the crack inside. It's a new day and
- 34:09Speaker 4: age where you know our roles are evolving, and John
- 34:13Speaker 4: helped spearhead the Capitol's radio efforts from behind the scenes,
- 34:16Speaker 4: so he calls a great game. But he's just an
- 34:18Speaker 4: absolute workhorse and a guy that a lot of us
- 34:20Speaker 4: certainly look up to pros pro and even better gentleman
- 34:24Speaker 4: John Walton joining us here as the Crack and getting
- 34:26Speaker 4: set with the Capitols coming up tomorrow night. For this
- 34:29Speaker 4: night though, they'll take on the Philadelphia Flyers. They're still
- 34:31Speaker 4: trying to figure things out with head coach Rick Tockett,
- 34:34Speaker 4: and they'd come off an overtime win over the Minnesota
- 34:37Speaker 4: Wild as well. I kind of got the field talking
- 34:40Speaker 4: to while broadcaster Joe O'Donnell in that there's still very
- 34:44Speaker 4: much a team that's in flux and perhaps the Crack
- 34:47Speaker 4: and are catching them right now at the right time.
- 34:50Speaker 4: There's no Coppocaco, there's no Riiker Evans. We'll see when
- 34:53Speaker 4: Montour is going to be back. I wouldn't expect him, though,
- 34:56Speaker 4: to be ready here and play this game coming up
- 34:58Speaker 4: here for this evening, But then there's questions about Ryan Lindgren.
- 35:02Speaker 4: So it really is next man up mentality, and I
- 35:07Speaker 4: think if you can pass one test, depending upon what
- 35:10Speaker 4: lane Lambert does with his lineup like you did in
- 35:13Speaker 4: Toronto and really putting a lot of workload on Adam
- 35:16Speaker 4: Larson and Vince Done defensively. You're giving yourselves a chance
- 35:20Speaker 4: here against a Flyers team's trying to really still figure
- 35:22Speaker 4: itself out, right now, Yeah, and you.
- 35:24Speaker 6: Can't afford to take the Flyers lightly right. You know,
- 35:26Speaker 6: you heard John Walton talk about how this is going
- 35:28Speaker 6: to be a team that they're going.
- 35:30Speaker 5: To struggle to score goals this year.
- 35:31Speaker 6: You bring in Rick Tockett, so you know, I think
- 35:34Speaker 6: that's another team that, like Seattle, is going to have
- 35:36Speaker 6: a change of identity. We saw what he did in
- 35:39Speaker 6: Vancouver and I think he's the right man for the job.
- 35:42Speaker 6: But they're still a very young team, and going through
- 35:44Speaker 6: all my player notes for the game here tonight, you
- 35:48Speaker 6: know they've got fifteen guys who have five or less
- 35:53Speaker 6: years of service time in the NHL, So this is
- 35:56Speaker 6: pretty a pretty young team in Philly.
- 35:59Speaker 5: I hate the phrase trap game, I really do.
- 36:02Speaker 6: I'm not even gonna use it, but this is a
- 36:04Speaker 6: game that potentially for Seattle, you can't afford to overlook
- 36:08Speaker 6: them because you've got Washington tomorrow night.
- 36:10Speaker 5: I think Philadelphia.
- 36:13Speaker 6: You know they're They're a team that can score if
- 36:17Speaker 6: you let them. Dan Vladar six one in one all
- 36:20Speaker 6: time against the Kraken. He's five zero and one in
- 36:24Speaker 6: the last six against Seattle. So if Vladar is the
- 36:27Speaker 6: guy going tonight, that that doesn't bode well. You know,
- 36:31Speaker 6: historically for Seattle, this is a game that even though
- 36:34Speaker 6: you got washed coming up tomorrow, you cannot afford to
- 36:36Speaker 6: take them.
- 36:37Speaker 3: Lightly Funny you mentioned Dan Vodar because I thought the
- 36:39Speaker 3: same thing as well. And I looked back at the
- 36:41Speaker 3: game logs for the Flyers so far, and they flip
- 36:43Speaker 3: flopped every game. It's been Samuel jis Arson, Daniel Vodar,
- 36:46Speaker 3: back and forth. And if that holds true, it should
- 36:48Speaker 3: be Samuel Arrison tonight. I don't think it's gonna be
- 36:51Speaker 3: if you look at that record with Dan Voldar.
- 36:53Speaker 1: So we'll see. But you know the thing about it
- 36:55Speaker 1: is with a.
- 36:56Speaker 3: Ricktocket coach team is you know the compete level is
- 36:58Speaker 3: gonna be high. You know the no quit level is
- 37:00Speaker 3: going to be high. You know the workff effort's going
- 37:03Speaker 3: to be there. I think that's a lot of the
- 37:05Speaker 3: Kraken identity as well. So it's gonna be a battle.
- 37:08Speaker 4: For what it's worth. Lane Lambert looking for his first
- 37:11Speaker 4: win head to head against Rick Tocket too previously faced
- 37:14Speaker 4: off when Taka just took the Canucks job, succeeding Bruce Boudreau.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Lane Lambert was back with the Islanders. But I mean,
- 37:21Speaker 4: as they say, coaches often can be changed men when
- 37:23Speaker 4: they get into their second NHL job here and Lane
- 37:26Speaker 4: Lambert right now doing some pretty incredible things, so he's
- 37:28Speaker 4: looking to get his first win against Rick Tocket had
- 37:31Speaker 4: to head here for this evening before we move on
- 37:33Speaker 4: to the ideal week ahead and our three Stars picks.
- 37:36Speaker 4: I didn't want to kind of put the spotlight on
- 37:38Speaker 4: the Matti Banear's line because we talked about so much
- 37:41Speaker 4: during the offseason. Where Matti Beneer's goes, this team could
- 37:46Speaker 4: go as well. And again Everett, you mentioned we hate
- 37:49Speaker 4: talking about twenty twenty two to twenty three. It's getting
- 37:51Speaker 4: up there now with comparing you know, the expansion draft
- 37:54Speaker 4: here to Vegas way like back five years ago. But
- 37:58Speaker 4: Matty Beaneer's that's at the bar for his production. But
- 38:01Speaker 4: now the league figures you out and what can you
- 38:03Speaker 4: do to win that? Cat and mouse game to get
- 38:06Speaker 4: back to your ideal numbers. Right now, Beniar's with three
- 38:09Speaker 4: points in five games. He's playing also with Jared McCann
- 38:14Speaker 4: near point per game, leading goal scorer on this team,
- 38:17Speaker 4: and Jordan Eberley four assists through five games. But you're
- 38:21Speaker 4: not looking at just a baseline numbers here for Beniers.
- 38:26Speaker 4: I've looked over and over and over at one on
- 38:29Speaker 4: one foot races and I'm not groaning. Oh, he should
- 38:32Speaker 4: have had that one. He should have had that one.
- 38:33Speaker 1: It's wow, what a play.
- 38:36Speaker 4: He took the body, he laid the shoulder in. He's
- 38:38Speaker 4: doing damage back in his own zone in a good
- 38:41Speaker 4: way and finding the exit lane for this team. But
- 38:45Speaker 4: also he's finding a way to produce. Help out McCann,
- 38:49Speaker 4: help out Eberley, And this is what you want. Can
- 38:52Speaker 4: you find your guy who now is taking a leadership
- 38:56Speaker 4: role even more with an A on the front of
- 38:58Speaker 4: his jersey and have him played a complete two hundred
- 39:01Speaker 4: foot game, Maddy, Beniers, so far, so good.
- 39:05Speaker 6: Yeah, we talk about the crack and every game they
- 39:07Speaker 6: play it seems like you're saying to yourself, man, this
- 39:11Speaker 6: might be the best game that I think we've seen
- 39:13Speaker 6: this season, And I feel like with Matty Beanier's every
- 39:15Speaker 6: game he's played, I feel like I find myself saying, man,
- 39:18Speaker 6: this might be one of his best performances in the
- 39:20Speaker 6: last couple of years here in Seattle. And it's not
- 39:23Speaker 6: a bad thing, right, It's just him maturing and growing.
- 39:27Speaker 5: You know.
- 39:27Speaker 6: Coming into the season, they were talking about him as
- 39:29Speaker 6: a Selkie dark course for you know, one of the
- 39:31Speaker 6: top defensive forwards in the league. And he's turning into
- 39:35Speaker 6: a defensive minded, responsible two way player. And you're right,
- 39:39Speaker 6: I think now that he is, you know, going through
- 39:42Speaker 6: the league for the fourth time and he's seeing a
- 39:44Speaker 6: lot of these teams again, and you know, you start
- 39:48Speaker 6: to know what it takes to be at your best
- 39:51Speaker 6: every day and bring you know, ninety percent minimum every
- 39:55Speaker 6: single day. Right, You're finding out what it takes to
- 39:58Speaker 6: survive in this league and and it's paying off dividends
- 40:01Speaker 6: and watching him play this year. This is the Matty
- 40:04Speaker 6: Beaneers that the Kraken drafted. This is the Matt Ebneers
- 40:08Speaker 6: that they expected to get when when he came here
- 40:12Speaker 6: to Seattle.
- 40:12Speaker 5: And I think he's just getting started this season.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you and.
- 40:15Speaker 3: I've talked a lot about him over this past week.
- 40:18Speaker 3: And the thing that I'm seeing is another element to
- 40:21Speaker 3: his game that I didn't see over the past two seasons.
- 40:23Speaker 3: But over the past two seasons, you know, when given
- 40:26Speaker 3: the opportunity a plus in offensive ability, but he struggled
- 40:31Speaker 3: on the defensive side of the pocket. I'm not seeing
- 40:33Speaker 3: that as much this year. And you know, for the
- 40:35Speaker 3: kids out there, it's like unlocking a skin for your
- 40:38Speaker 3: character in a game where they become stronger, they become bigger,
- 40:41Speaker 3: they become faster. Maybe it's a suit of arm or whatever,
- 40:44Speaker 3: but that's what I'm seeing in Matti Beiners. His game
- 40:47Speaker 3: has grown to a new level and it's exciting to see.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Before we really get into the mean of Monday, here
- 40:54Speaker 4: one more when the Mariners will reach the World Series
- 40:57Speaker 4: for their first time in franchise history. I know my
- 41:00Speaker 4: dad a fans in seventy seven, a fan since the
- 41:04Speaker 4: pilots is on pins and needles right now with this
- 41:07Speaker 4: or we could be talking about Game seven, which will
- 41:09Speaker 4: be going on a little bit after we have puck
- 41:11Speaker 4: drop here in Philadelphia. But how do we make of
- 41:15Speaker 4: the crack and worry Mariners jerseys to Toronto? What a
- 41:18Speaker 4: way to make a statement.
- 41:20Speaker 1: That was awesome.
- 41:21Speaker 6: I mean, listen, you're showing up and you're showing out
- 41:24Speaker 6: for your city in Toronto. I made the comment on
- 41:28Speaker 6: the air the other day that if you go back
- 41:30Speaker 6: to Wednesday, we potentially are looking at six consecutive days
- 41:37Speaker 6: of Seattle versus Toronto sporting events, and I mean, it's awesome. Obviously,
- 41:44Speaker 6: it all started with Josh Naylor wearing a champagne soaked
- 41:47Speaker 6: third jersey when they beat the Tigers in Game five
- 41:51Speaker 6: of the DS. And you know, a lot of guys
- 41:54Speaker 6: in this room love baseball. A lot of guys in
- 41:55Speaker 6: this room love the Jays as well. But they they're
- 41:58Speaker 6: they're putting there there. I guess country.
- 42:02Speaker 5: Loyalty on hold to support their city now. And it's
- 42:06Speaker 5: been really good to see.
- 42:07Speaker 1: I think it's up.
- 42:07Speaker 3: It's been awesome to see as well.
- 42:09Speaker 1: I was.
- 42:10Speaker 3: I was especially tickled to see Lane Lambert wearing his
- 42:12Speaker 3: postgame presser as well, and some of the comments he
- 42:15Speaker 3: made about you know what a sports city Seattle is,
- 42:19Speaker 3: And you know the thing about it is that the
- 42:22Speaker 3: players were told that the Maple Police were gonna wear
- 42:24Speaker 3: Blue Jays jerseys in they never did, and that says
- 42:28Speaker 3: a lot in itself right, Seattle versus Toronto. So I
- 42:31Speaker 3: think that the message that it sends, not only to
- 42:34Speaker 3: the Kraken fans, not only to the city of Seattle
- 42:37Speaker 3: and the teams themselves is really cool.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Here's Lane Lambert, by the way, after the win against
- 42:41Speaker 4: some Maple Leafs wearing his Mariners jersey. What a meant
- 42:45Speaker 4: to roll out that jersey?
- 42:45Speaker 2: Well, I think it's mutual. I think, uh, you know,
- 42:49Speaker 2: Josh Naylor supports us too. We're just wearing our jersey
- 42:53Speaker 2: after they won, you know, and in the locker room,
- 42:58Speaker 2: and you know, I it's again, it's about our hometown,
- 43:02Speaker 2: and it's about our fans and our city. And I'll
- 43:08Speaker 2: say it again. Our city is a great sports town
- 43:11Speaker 2: and we've had you know, we have great fans in
- 43:13Speaker 2: every uh you know, in every sport, and you know
- 43:18Speaker 2: we're supporting them just as they would support us.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Friends.
- 43:20Speaker 4: Again, I want to go back to al Koniski's comments
- 43:23Speaker 4: here about this team wearing Mariners jerseys and where they
- 43:27Speaker 4: come from. And you have a lot of players on
- 43:29Speaker 4: this roster who are from the Ontario province as well.
- 43:33Speaker 4: They could have chosen to wear it or not wear it.
- 43:36Speaker 4: But again, Lane Lambert said, I've coached in Toronto, I'm
- 43:40Speaker 4: now coaching in Seattle. I'm a Homer, I'm wearing the
- 43:43Speaker 4: Mariner jersey. No one forced them to do this. They
- 43:46Speaker 4: did it by choice. That's how special this sports market
- 43:50Speaker 4: is in the city of Seattle. Let's get onto the
- 43:53Speaker 4: ideal week ahead. Here for the cracket. You got Philadelphia
- 43:56Speaker 4: this evening, you have Washington coming up tomorrow night, Winnipeg
- 43:59Speaker 4: on Thursday A. Don't show any signs of falling back,
- 44:03Speaker 4: maybe from what people projected them to do. And then
- 44:06Speaker 4: you come back home to face the Flying Conor McDavid's
- 44:09Speaker 4: and Leon dr Teidels and the Edmonton Oilers. Four points
- 44:15Speaker 4: on the table. But I like where this team is
- 44:17Speaker 4: going with its identity. I'm thinking if you can get
- 44:21Speaker 4: maybe five of eight, you call it a good week.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Guys.
- 44:23Speaker 4: What about you?
- 44:23Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I think going four and oh with
- 44:25Speaker 6: four shoutouts I think is great. That's to me, that's
- 44:29Speaker 6: that that that's the low bar, Michael, though.
- 44:31Speaker 5: The low bar is for no Listen, I mean for me,
- 44:36Speaker 5: you're still you're still learning and growing.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Within this system.
- 44:40Speaker 5: Right.
- 44:41Speaker 6: We talked about this, Alan and I did I think
- 44:43Speaker 6: more important than the wins and losses is consistency. If
- 44:47Speaker 6: you lose games, but you lose games the way that
- 44:50Speaker 6: you've been playing the last five I don't think you're
- 44:54Speaker 6: gonna have too much of a problem with that, because, hey,
- 44:57Speaker 6: we played to our identity. We played the best of
- 44:59Speaker 6: our ability. That said, I'm with you. If you can
- 45:02Speaker 6: take more points than you lose five of eight points,
- 45:04Speaker 6: you can you can keep the the zero in the
- 45:08Speaker 6: lost column for as long as possible, maybe a one loss.
- 45:11Speaker 6: You know, a week you go three to one in
- 45:14Speaker 6: or two to one in one or three in one,
- 45:16Speaker 6: whatever it is. I again, playing the right way, playing consistently,
- 45:22Speaker 6: That for me, is gonna be most important because you
- 45:24Speaker 6: don't want to go out in there, especially against some
- 45:26Speaker 6: teams that in Winnipeg and Edmonton in particular. If you
- 45:29Speaker 6: want to make the playoffs, you're gonna have to go
- 45:31Speaker 6: through these teams, either in the regular season or in
- 45:34Speaker 6: the first couple of rounds. Right, So these are gonna
- 45:37Speaker 6: be those those first tune up, those first litmus test
- 45:40Speaker 6: games against teams in your conference, in your division that
- 45:44Speaker 6: you're gonna be battling with for the next seventy five games.
- 45:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and listen, it's still a real small sample size
- 45:50Speaker 3: five games, five games in seventy seven to go. I
- 45:53Speaker 3: think the status out there today was last year there
- 45:56Speaker 3: were five teams that were didn't have a lot loss
- 45:59Speaker 3: in regulations through five games. Only two made the playoffs.
- 46:01Speaker 3: So you know, this is a great start. They got
- 46:05Speaker 3: to keep it going. This is building their identity, but
- 46:08Speaker 3: there's a long road ahead before we start talking about playoffs.
- 46:11Speaker 4: We wrap this up with our three stars of the week.
- 46:14Speaker 4: I'll begin I'm gonna go with my third star in
- 46:17Speaker 4: Matty Benier's and again I go back to what I
- 46:19Speaker 4: said earlier. A terrific two hundred foot game. He is
- 46:23Speaker 4: looking stronger on pucks fifty to fifty battles. He looks
- 46:26Speaker 4: a step quicker as well, and he is helping elevate
- 46:29Speaker 4: his linemates and Jered McCann and Jordan Eberley. My second
- 46:33Speaker 4: star is going to go to Josh Mahera because being
- 46:37Speaker 4: put into duty given the circumstances here of this Kraken lineup,
- 46:42Speaker 4: fifteen minutes against the maple Leafs means sometimes fifteen minutes
- 46:47Speaker 4: of what you're gonna do when you're facing Matthews, Nilander
- 46:50Speaker 4: Tavares et cetera, and he left a vapor trail right
- 46:55Speaker 4: in front of William Nielander for the overtime winner to
- 46:59Speaker 4: get his first goals since twenty twenty three against the
- 47:02Speaker 4: same team as well. That's perseverance. Josh Mhura is my
- 47:06Speaker 4: second star of the week, my first star as well.
- 47:09Speaker 4: Vin's done because of the lineup shuffle and you put
- 47:15Speaker 4: the Kraken right into this fire against the Maple Leafs
- 47:18Speaker 4: on Hockey Night in Canada. Brandon Montor's gotta be away
- 47:21Speaker 4: for a while. You're down then Ryan Lindgren though, late
- 47:24Speaker 4: in the game, and there are questions of what's gonna
- 47:26Speaker 4: happen here to this defensive court until they can get
- 47:29Speaker 4: some bodies back. But you're putting again a great load
- 47:32Speaker 4: on the shoulders of Done and Larson. Vin's done, logging
- 47:36Speaker 4: over twenty eight minutes of ice time. He's your leading
- 47:39Speaker 4: score now and he's looking like the Vince Done of
- 47:42Speaker 4: old that has helped carry this team an two hundred
- 47:45Speaker 4: foot game on the back end, and he was phenomenal.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Vince Dune's my first name.
- 47:50Speaker 6: Yeah, this one's tough for me. I got about five
- 47:52Speaker 6: guys that I could throw into this conversation, I think
- 47:55Speaker 6: my third star.
- 47:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna go Mason Marchman.
- 47:59Speaker 6: You know, we were talking talking about hell and I,
- 48:01Speaker 6: you know, needing to see more from him in the
- 48:03Speaker 6: last couple of games. Getting points in both those games,
- 48:06Speaker 6: and I think again Toronto, call it what it was,
- 48:09Speaker 6: you're playing in Toronto, you're playing at home, or you
- 48:12Speaker 6: know whatever.
- 48:12Speaker 5: I thought that was a really good game for him.
- 48:14Speaker 6: So he's my third star, my second star for the
- 48:17Speaker 6: exact same reason Chandler Stevens right points him back to
- 48:19Speaker 6: back games, four points in his last two games.
- 48:22Speaker 5: I think he really needed to have a good week.
- 48:27Speaker 6: Just you know, I don't want to see a slow start,
- 48:29Speaker 6: but just from where he was and to where he
- 48:33Speaker 6: is now, I think.
- 48:34Speaker 5: His play has increased, His play has gotten better and
- 48:37Speaker 5: the best.
- 48:38Speaker 6: Face off man exactly how you're bang on there and
- 48:40Speaker 6: my number one star, this was this was so hard.
- 48:42Speaker 6: But I'm giving Shane right, right, I mean, I think
- 48:45Speaker 6: Shane Wright getting a goal in your one hundred game.
- 48:48Speaker 5: Again, like Maddie, we've seen a very consistent style of
- 48:52Speaker 5: play with him, and I think last year with him
- 48:55Speaker 5: up and down the line up, going on different lines,
- 48:57Speaker 5: having different linemates. We're wondering what's gonna be the plan
- 49:01Speaker 5: for him.
- 49:02Speaker 6: But now this year, he's been playing for the most
- 49:04Speaker 6: part with the same guys the first five games, and we're.
- 49:06Speaker 5: Starting to see this this Shane Wright who is.
- 49:11Speaker 6: Developing into a really strong two way player, not unlike
- 49:16Speaker 6: Matty Pairs.
- 49:16Speaker 1: So I'm gonna go a different route with my three stars.
- 49:19Speaker 1: So I'm gonna go with the unsung hero route.
- 49:21Speaker 3: You know, I like the physical game. You know I
- 49:23Speaker 3: like the gritty game. So that's the direction I'm gonna
- 49:25Speaker 3: come at this from. Ty car Cha is my third
- 49:27Speaker 3: star for the week. Ty car Cha leads the team
- 49:31Speaker 3: right now with twenty one hits on the season, and
- 49:33Speaker 3: he's been playing in that fourth line role. He's figuring
- 49:36Speaker 3: out how to be that guy on the ford line
- 49:39Speaker 3: where when he gets the opportunity to shoot the buck,
- 49:41Speaker 3: of course he's shooting the score, but he knows that
- 49:44Speaker 3: the rest of the time he's going to play a physical,
- 49:46Speaker 3: gritty game. So ty car Cha is my third star
- 49:48Speaker 3: for playing that way. Like second star for the same reasons,
- 49:51Speaker 3: Ellie Tobin. He's second behind ty Karscha with twenty twenty
- 49:55Speaker 3: hits on the year. So far, he quietly goes out
- 49:58Speaker 3: there and just plays the physical and fitts and I've
- 50:01Speaker 3: talked to him in some of the media veils. He
- 50:03Speaker 3: just knows that's the way he has to play to
- 50:05Speaker 3: get into the game and contribute.
- 50:07Speaker 1: And he likes it.
- 50:08Speaker 3: And it's he doesn't go seek it intentionally. It just
- 50:11Speaker 3: comes to himself. Elie Twelven is my second start. First
- 50:14Speaker 3: star I gotta go to the blue line is Adam Larson.
- 50:17Speaker 3: He leads the team with seventeen blocks and again this
- 50:20Speaker 3: team hirt, Yes, he did this team with this defensive
- 50:25Speaker 3: minded structure that Lane Lambert is implementing. It starts with
- 50:29Speaker 3: blocking shots and not letting pucks get to the front
- 50:31Speaker 3: of the net to get to your goaltender. Shots that
- 50:34Speaker 3: never have a chance of going in are blocked. And
- 50:36Speaker 3: and Adam Larson leads the seventeen right now.
- 50:39Speaker 1: In the season. So he's my first start.
- 50:40Speaker 4: Round and pound is part of this team's DNA for
- 50:44Speaker 4: this season. And speaking of boys, time to go out
- 50:46Speaker 4: and pound some cheese takes, shall we? Yeah, we're in Philadelphia,
- 50:51Speaker 4: glad he can be with us here for cracking whey again.
