Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about by Amy K. Hutchens. Sophie, I gotta say, this book made me realize how often I ask for things without actually knowing what I want.
• 0:15
Sophie: Right? And I think that's exactly the point. Sam, this book is basically a masterclass in getting what you want, but not in a manipulative way. It's about clarity and empathy. I loved how she breaks it down into four steps.
• 0:30
Sam: Yeah, the whole framework is deceptively simple. First step is Get Clear. And she doesn't just mean 'I want a raise.' She means, like, what exactly does that raise look like? Is it a number, a title, specific responsibilities?
• 0:46
Sophie: Exactly. You have to be so specific that your brain can actually lock onto it. Otherwise you're just wandering around hoping something good happens. And that's not a strategy.
• 0:57
Sam: Honestly, I tried this before a conversation last week. I wrote down exactly what I wanted from the meeting, three bullet points, and it changed how I showed up. I was way less nervous.
• 1:09
Sophie: See? Your brain starts working for you when you're that clear. The second step is Get Connected. And this one's the hardest for me because it's about truly understanding the other person's world.
• 1:22
Sam: Oh, I pushed back on this at first. I thought, 'I already know what they want.' But then I realized, no, I was just assuming they wanted the same things I did.
• 1:31
Sophie: Right. Hutchens says you can't get what you want without giving other people what they want. And that's not transactional, it's empathetic. You have to ask questions and actually listen.
• 1:43
Sam: The part that got me was when she says the most powerful question before any conversation is: 'What do they need from this interaction?' That's so simple but I never ask it.
• 1:53
Sophie: And then step three is Get Specific. This is where most people fail. They hint and dance around it because they're afraid of rejection. But you have to make a clear, direct ask.
• 2:05
Sam: She gives this great example. Instead of saying 'I need you to approve this budget,' you say 'My goal is to move this project forward, and I believe this budget is the best path. Would you be willing to approve it today?'
• 2:19
Sophie: It's direct but respectful. It acknowledges their agency. And then step four is Get a Commitment. A conversation isn't a result. You need a concrete next step, a signed contract, a follow-up, even a clear 'no.'
• 2:35
Sam: Yeah, she says a 'no' is just data. It tells you you haven't found the intersection between your outcome and their needs yet. That reframing was huge for me.
• 2:45
Sophie: And the book is full of practical stuff, like a pre-conversation ritual. Before any important interaction, ask yourself, what's my outcome, what's their outcome, and what's the bridge?
• 2:57
Sam: I've started doing that before calls. It takes two minutes but it completely changes my mindset. I'm not just reacting, I'm driving the conversation.
• 3:07
Sophie: She also talks about the internal stories we tell ourselves. Like 'I'm not smart enough' or 'I don't deserve this.' Those are just limiting beliefs. The only real barrier is the one we put up.
• 3:19
Sam: That's the part that hit me hardest. I realized I've been the one holding myself back, not the other person. This framework is about reclaiming your agency.
• 3:29
Sophie: And it applies everywhere, not just at work. With your partner, with your kids, even asking for a better table at a restaurant. It's the same process every time.
• 3:40
Sam: The one thing I'm taking away is that getting what you want isn't about being aggressive or loud. It's about clarity, empathy, and the courage to make a direct ask.
• 3:50
Sophie: If you want to dive deeper, the whole library is on the 7 Minute Books app at 7minutebooks.com/app, over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language, starting at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 for lifetime access.
• 4:12
Sam: Well said. Sophie, final thought?
• 4:15
Sophie: This book is a reminder that the gap between where you are and where you want to be is bridged by a simple process, get clear, get connected, get specific, and get a commitment. That's it. We'll see you in the next one.
