- 0:00Welcome to "the Hoover Daily Report". Ideas Advancing
- 0:03Freedom. It's Wednesday, April 22nd, twenty twenty six.
- 0:06In honor of Earth Day, Dominic Parker reflects on the decades of market-based
- 0:10solutions the US has employed to clean up its air and watersheds. Eugene Volokh
- 0:15follows a Texas defamation case brought by FBI Director Kash Patel, just as he
- 0:19launches a new one against The Atlantic. And Nadia Schadlow writes about how
- 0:23rhetoric and mean tweets obscure what is really driving differences among
- 0:28Brussels, London, and Washington.
- 0:30Thanks to Markets, Our Environment Ain’t What It Used to Be.
- 0:32When Earth Day was declared in 1970, polluted water and air, as well as
- 0:37swelling world population, were seen as serious problems. Smog and burning rivers
- 0:41made for bleak and compelling symbols, writes Hoover Senior Fellow Dominic
- 0:46Parker, but even by the 1960s there were signs of progress. What’s more, he
- 0:50writes, ecological gains owe much to powerful market-based remedies such as
- 0:55incentives, cap-and-trade arrangements, and personal choice. In the ensuing years
- 1:00since the first Earth Day, world trade not only shifted US manufacturing toward
- 1:05cleaner industry—aerospace, healthcare, electronics—but led other, lower-income
- 1:09countries to clean up their own industries, he writes. As for the dreaded
- 1:14population explosion, free trade provided new labor opportunities in developing
- 1:19nations, slowing population growth without using state-mandated family
- 1:23limits. Today, Earth Day points to worries about climate change—and even
- 1:27there, Parker writes, market forces that encourage innovation will be the key to
- 1:32nurturing environmental progress.
- 1:34FBI Director Kash Patel Loses Defamation Suit over Morning Joe Statements.
- 1:38As he launches a new claim of defamation against The Atlantic for its reporting,
- 1:43FBI Director Kash Patel has lost an earlier court battle in Texas, writes
- 1:47Senior Fellow Eugene Volokh on his blog. Last year, former FBI Assistant Director
- 1:52Frank Filiuzi criticized Patel during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe,
- 1:57suggesting Patel had “been more visible at nightclubs” than at FBI headquarters.
- 2:02Patel sued, claiming the comments constituted actionable defamation. On
- 2:06Tuesday, Houston judge George C. Hanks Jr. dismissed the claim, saying Filiuzi's
- 2:11statement was made using “nonactionable rhetorical hyperbole,” and that no viewer
- 2:15“of reasonable intelligence” would have taken the statement literally. Hanks also
- 2:20said Filiuzi would have to pay his own attorney’s fees and costs.
- 2:24The Transatlantic Divide Is About More Than Trump.
- 2:27Writing in the Financial Times, National Security Visiting Fellow Nadia Schadlow
- 2:32argues that while TruthSocial storms and fiery rhetoric have impacted US-European
- 2:37relations this year, they mask the real divides between American and European
- 2:42policymakers, laid bare by differences that emerged after the US-Israeli attack
- 2:47on Iran. “The Iran war reveals that the US and Europe operate from fundamentally
- 2:52different assumptions about risk, responsibility and results—about what
- 2:57makes the international system work, or not,” Schadlow writes. “Recognizing these
- 3:02differences is the first step towards re-balancing the alliance.”.
- 3:06Online Buddies for Job Seekers.
- 3:08When job loss leads to a long spell of unemployment, it causes a big blow to
- 3:12self-esteem, a lasting drop in living standards, and serious hardship for the
- 3:17job loser’s family. Is there a low-cost way to help the newly unemployed navigate
- 3:22the search process and find rewarding new work? Yes, say Michelle Belot and Philipp
- 3:27Kircher, who work as economists at Cornell University, based on their
- 3:31insightful new study. Senior Fellow Steven J. Davis, host of Economics,
- 3:35Applied, discusses the study and underlying thinking with the authors.
- 3:39Policies Developed by Hoover Fellows Enable New Healthcare Flexibility for
- 3:44Millions of Americans.
- 3:45Two measures developed by Hoover scholars that became law last year have enabled 10
- 3:51million recipients of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to better take
- 3:57charge of their own healthcare journeys. One of the new provisions in the One Big
- 4:03Beautiful Bill Act allows recipients of certain “bronze” and “catastrophic” plans
- 4:08offered through the ACA to use Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) for the first
- 4:14time. The changes also allow all HSA holders to use their accumulated funds to
- 4:19pay for primary-care service fees, also known as primary-care practice membership
- 4:25or subscription fees. The ideas came to Hoover fellows Lanhee J. Chen, Daniel
- 4:30Heil, and Tom Church, members of Hoover’s Healthcare Policy Working Group, as they
- 4:36began an effort in 2023 to assist policymakers in developing new ides in
- 4:41the healthcare space.
- 4:42Featured Hoover Publication.
- 4:44Finishing the Inflation Job and New Challenges for Monetary Policy.
- 4:47Finishing the Inflation Job and New Challenges for Monetary Policy collects
- 4:51essays and discussions from the annual Hoover Institution Monetary Policy
- 4:55Conference, held on May 9, 2025, where issues were discussed, including how the
- 5:00Federal Reserve and international central banks can stabilize inflation in a global
- 5:04environment of disruption—in tariffs, supply chain shocks, the status of the
- 5:08dollar, and international cooperation.
