- 0:00Speaker 1: D Football for is powered by the Inside the Birds Podcast.
- 0:03It's brought to you by the Fanatics Sportsbook at Ocean
- 0:05Casino Resort in Atlantic City. We'll be there on Monday
- 0:10getting Actually we won't be there this Monday. We're there
- 0:13every Monday, but we will not be there on Labor Day.
- 0:16We'll have the Phillies and the Brewers, by the way,
- 0:18Brewers closer Trevor McGill just put on the injured list
- 0:23with a pretty serious injury there. And I say serious,
- 0:26but I don't know they'll pitch anytime soon for the
- 0:29rest of the season. We'll have that when we get
- 0:30the Phillies lineup. It has not come out yet, but
- 0:32Jeff Bocher from Inside the Birds dot Com, the Inside
- 0:35of the Birds podcast, and Philly Voice is here as
- 0:38the Eagles are back on the practice field for the
- 0:41first time since all of the moves have been made. Jeff,
- 0:44and obviously the big news at practice today landon Dickerson
- 0:48back on the field and practicing with the first team.
- 0:51It looks like those questions will be answered about Thursday night.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah. AJ Brown too, Mike.
- 0:56Speaker 3: I know there were a lot of people who are
- 0:58concerned about AJ Brown delayed or prolonged absence with the hamstring,
- 1:02So good news there. Obviously, the Eagles made some really
- 1:05interesting moves for their fifty three man roster and then
- 1:08made as they always do.
- 1:09Speaker 2: That's why we call it the initial fifty three man.
- 1:11Speaker 3: They made some other moves today, but yeah, very good
- 1:14to see the land of Dickerson is out there.
- 1:16Speaker 4: A J.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Brown's out there pretty much full strength as they're heading
- 1:19into their season opener.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Yeah, let's look at some of the roster decisions that
- 1:23they made and how he did say not done. You know,
- 1:26always going to continue to look, but he said, we're
- 1:28not done here, We're not done. Now. Do you think
- 1:30that means some of the little things that he's done
- 1:32taate or is there something still bigger that you think
- 1:36how he's still looking at?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Well, you know what I think.
- 1:40Speaker 3: You know, one of the things we spoke about the
- 1:42other day was that they would look for some interior
- 1:44offensive line help, specifically guards center, and they did get
- 1:48that in Lampkin. Not that he's played, you know, he
- 1:51doesn't have NFL experience, but he's someone that they can
- 1:54develop there.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Edge depth is still to me an area that they'll
- 1:58look at.
- 1:58Speaker 3: But you know that might be something that they have
- 2:02to look at after they see what they've got, unless
- 2:05something becomes available in the next twenty four to forty
- 2:07eight hours that they just can't say no to. But
- 2:09that's a position where teams aren't trying to give away
- 2:13good players at that position.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and we know that, you know they Yesterday, I
- 2:17thought was one of the more interesting parts of the
- 2:19press conference where Nick was asked about punt returner. They
- 2:22do not have a traditional punt returner on the roster.
- 2:27They do have guys who do return punts, Cooper to Gene.
- 2:29Give me your thoughts on that, and you know whether
- 2:32the Eagles are reluctant to use Cooper or Dotson in
- 2:36that role or obviously Devonte Smith has done it.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, we can't speak of the Eagles as a monolith here.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Vic Fangio is reluctant or adamant, I should say about
- 2:46not wanting Cooper to Gene to return punts for obvious
- 2:49injury reasons, but that may be the case anyway. John
- 2:53Dotson has been doing a lot of punt returning in camp,
- 2:56so he might be the first person to get that
- 2:59opportunit community as well, and we'll see if anybody else
- 3:03kind of emerges, you know, did they wound up waving
- 3:06or no releasing Avery Williams. He was someone who when
- 3:09he came here, we thought would handle those responsibilities, but
- 3:12it just never materialized that all for him to spend
- 3:15all that enthusiasm that Nick Sirianni had for him at
- 3:18the owner's meetings.
- 3:20Speaker 1: All right, let's look at some of the things that
- 3:21they did do here. Let's start with now today. Charlie Hewlett,
- 3:25the long snapper, he got released. They put him back
- 3:28on the practice squad today. So I guess that means
- 3:30that they felt that somebody was going to sign him,
- 3:34Is that what they because it doesn't make a lot
- 3:35of sense to do what they did, right, Well.
- 3:38Speaker 2: No, they didn't think.
- 3:39Speaker 3: They didn't think anybody was going to sign him. That's
- 3:41why they enabled them to keep a guy for an
- 3:43extra day as they sorted out and they themselves saw
- 3:48who was going to be available on the waiver wire,
- 3:50right and then so they saw that a guy like
- 3:54Lampkin was available.
- 3:55Speaker 2: They were able to, uh, they were able to then.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Wave Trevor Keagan a daily after all the cunts, which
- 4:02helps them to try to get him back onto their
- 4:05practice squad. He was a fifth round pick from the
- 4:07year before, and then obviously bringing in hewittt you know,
- 4:11they had to make a corresponding move. And though they
- 4:13wave Tristan McCollum and again, could he get claimed between
- 4:19now and next and noon tomorrow, Yeah, they could. But
- 4:22a lot of teams are already finalizing their practice squads
- 4:27by now and their fifty threes. And I don't think
- 4:29mccollm's the kind of player that team might change their
- 4:31mind about.
- 4:32Speaker 2: But you never know.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Well, I was gonna say he was a guy, you know,
- 4:34a little surprising, like to see, hey, why McCollum. He
- 4:36was the guy that played last year when there were
- 4:38some injury issues ahead of Sydney Round. Now we know
- 4:41they didn't think Sydney was really ready last year, But
- 4:43I guess that says that maybe McCollum is definitively the
- 4:47third guy in the race there, maybe even deeper at
- 4:50that safety spot.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well, you know, I wrote this column yesterday Mike for
- 4:54Philly Voice that I would encourage people to check out
- 4:57because I trying.
- 4:57Speaker 4: To get perspective on one of the unique things that
- 5:00goes due from a roster perspective to try to win
- 5:03Super Bowls, but also have a lot of future talent
- 5:07down the road, talent so that a guy like Gabe
- 5:09Hall or a guy like Jordan Malatta, right, who's not.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Ready year one but could be ready by year two, three,
- 5:15or four. You want to keep those guys.
- 5:17Speaker 3: So the ECUs of eleven offensive linemen eleven right, you
- 5:21only start five, and you get three backups active on
- 5:25game day. So now they're carrying three offensive linemen who
- 5:29will probably never see the field. Cameron Williams being one
- 5:32lampkin may never see the field this year. And you know,
- 5:36hitting is on pup. So when he's right, when he's
- 5:40healthy or I'm sorry, he's on high R.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I think when he's healthy he'll he'll be on they'll
- 5:44make a move.
- 5:44Speaker 3: My point is you got to go light at other
- 5:47areas to go heavy like that in one. So they
- 5:51have with Cooper de Jean's ability to play safety, they
- 5:54have a fourth safety. His name is Cooper to gen right,
- 5:56because he becomes that guy next to Blanket Ship and
- 6:00mccooba and of course and Sydney Brown. And by the way,
- 6:04mccoba is not practicing today, So that just shows you
- 6:06how thin they are at safety, but you have.
- 6:08Speaker 2: That versatility to be able to use Cooper to gene there.
- 6:12Speaker 3: So it gives you the ability to keep the eleven
- 6:16lineman go a little fitter at safety because you've cross
- 6:18trained a guy at Nickel in safety.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Uh Kaylin Grantson, Kylon Grantson is the guy who made
- 6:24it as the third tight end there, But does he
- 6:26profile as the as the third guy that this that
- 6:29fits with this team needs.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I don't really know what they're doing there, to be
- 6:33honest with you, you know, I feel like his skill
- 6:35set is redundant.
- 6:36Speaker 2: He's a pass catching, he's a he's an h back
- 6:39type of tight end.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Can move him around. I mean, he's a good weapon,
- 6:42can stretch the field from that position. But you know
- 6:44they also have Dallas Goddard and Grant Calcutta who could
- 6:48do that. Honestly, I think you know, one of the
- 6:50reasons E. J. Jenkins was brought back to the practice
- 6:52squad is because he can be elevated and be a
- 6:54blocking tight end. He's better at that than cal Katara
- 6:58and Grantson is. And this team likes to play a
- 7:00lot of twelve personnel, right, so it wouldn't surprise me
- 7:02if he is one of that first guys elevated in
- 7:05these throughout these first few weeks as they figure out
- 7:07they're fifty three ongoing. I don't know where the where
- 7:13the room outside of special teams, I don't know where
- 7:15you're going to see Kylan Grants and contribute offensively all.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Right at on the offensive side of the ball. And
- 7:22obviously Darius Cooper made the team Terrace Marshall on the
- 7:26practice squad, but they went with five wide receivers. And
- 7:30his funny part is, you know you have Cooper here
- 7:32and he's the story of the camp. You know, this
- 7:34guy is an undrafted guy out of Tarleton State. But
- 7:37then now that the season's here, does he have a
- 7:40role on this team? How do you kind of see this?
- 7:42Because the wide receiver room is a lot more interesting
- 7:44that it's been the last couple of years in terms
- 7:46of the talent that they have.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think this is fluid. I think it's
- 7:52fair to say that you know who your top three are,
- 7:55and you know.
- 7:55Speaker 3: That ninety percent of the volume of the passing offense
- 7:58is going to go through the top three. And when
- 8:00I say top three, what I really mean is Brown,
- 8:02Dots and I'm sorry Brown, Dealante Smith and Dallas Goddard.
- 8:06Speaker 2: You know, we'll see if John Dottson can carve out
- 8:09a little bit more of a role.
- 8:10Speaker 3: But behind that, Johnny Mitchie still has to learn the
- 8:13offense and get acclimated. And you know he's also a
- 8:16guy who you really don't know what you're getting. Darius
- 8:19Cooper was so impressive in camp it would not surprise
- 8:22me if the Eagles tried to get him on the
- 8:25field in certain situations like where you maybe have four
- 8:27wide five wide packages and see what you're getting out
- 8:31of him. And there's no saying he can't be by
- 8:34the middle of the year the fourth receiver, right, or
- 8:37if he's more impressive than Johan Dottson the third.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Well, if they got to figure out and then real
- 8:42NFL games, can he play, get open and catch pass well?
- 8:44Speaker 1: And the big thing is, let's say aj Brown, who
- 8:46looks like he was back on the practice field. But
- 8:48if Brown and Smith have been hurt over the years,
- 8:50they've been a complete disaster on offense, they're much better equipped.
- 8:54Not that you're all of a sudden going to be,
- 8:56you know, scoring thirty points a game, but you're much
- 8:58better equipped. If one of those guys is not playing,
- 9:01then you've been.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Theoretically, theoretically theoretically, I I'm really I don't want to
- 9:07go there yet because I just don't know what you
- 9:09got out of Metchi and Darius Cooper to say that
- 9:11if A. J. Brown missed three weeks again, that's injury.
- 9:14That they're in better shape than last year. Last year's
- 9:17number four was I guess Johnny Wilson, was it?
- 9:21Speaker 2: Or Wilson? Yea, So maybe, I mean we're still talking
- 9:26Harris Campbell.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Right at times.
- 9:30Speaker 2: So yeah, I think their inclination is to say they're
- 9:33better off. But I don't know Jodny Wilson.
- 9:34Speaker 1: If Johnny Wilson doesn't get hurt, he makes the team,
- 9:37who's out.
- 9:39Speaker 3: It's a great question, you know, I don't know. Maybe
- 9:44you're not keeping eleven offensive linemen, then you know, maybe
- 9:47you're not keeping maybe you're not keeping that fifth edge
- 9:52Inconquo oconquo, right, but you probably are because you need
- 9:56that guy to play special teams.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Somebody is probably a little bit happy inside the Johnny
- 10:01Wilson then make the couldn't make it all.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Right, let's go to defense. You just mentioned them. Oh Benaya,
- 10:07Oh cor ron COO. He made the team. He made
- 10:13the team. But we think they're still looking for an
- 10:15edge rusher. Is it a marginal edge rusher or are
- 10:19they trying to swing for someone to usurp Jalx Hunt.
- 10:25Speaker 3: No, you know they've got well, I mean, listen, they
- 10:28want to develop chillicks Hunt. They've got to see what
- 10:30they've they've gotten him. I mean, it's interestingly it feels
- 10:34like right now he's a little bit more advance in
- 10:36the run defense than pure pass rusher. But again, training
- 10:40camp can be a big, big disguise for you and
- 10:44not let you see the real story. I'm actually more
- 10:46concerned about Nolan Smith because he had.
- 10:48Speaker 2: The shoulder injury and.
- 10:50Speaker 3: They're only playing them on one side of the defensive
- 10:53line because they wanted that right shoulder that was hurt
- 10:56to be on the outside, not on the inside, So
- 10:58they were lining them up over the left tackle only
- 11:00so that only is his inside left shoulder would get
- 11:03the contact.
- 11:04Speaker 2: So then that menu it's the guy coming.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Off the tristeps surgery too. So if they're looking for somebody,
- 11:09they're looking for somebody who could come in and be
- 11:11an important piece of the rotation if they're going to
- 11:15bring someone in, and that probably would just mean more
- 11:17for and Ojelari than say, Jaelex Hunt. But to your point,
- 11:22if Hunt's not rushing the passer the way they want,
- 11:24then maybe you might see some changes there.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's where you know, you know, we'll see
- 11:31how much they rely on Hunt early in the season
- 11:34and how much they trust some of those other guys. Right,
- 11:36we should get a pretty good indication right off the
- 11:38bat on whether or not Hey Oji or has won
- 11:41that battle of the guy who gets I don't know
- 11:43what thirty percent of the snaps.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm really you know, anticipating the first like third
- 11:50down on Thursday night. You know, I assume it's going
- 11:52to be Carter and a Dromo on the inside and
- 11:54Hunt and uh Hunt and Smith on the outside, but
- 11:58I don't know that, So I I'm very curious to
- 12:00see what Vic's first four man rush is going to be. Yeah, absolutely,
- 12:05And if he's if he's pulling the trigger on a
- 12:07few sim sim pressures or or or creeper pressures, which is,
- 12:11you know the same thing as a SAM but they
- 12:13have they it's a little bit more of a delay blitz.
- 12:16That'll show you that he's got a little bit of
- 12:19concern because he's already dialing up.
- 12:22Speaker 2: A certain type of pressure or a certain type of look.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Obviously, Sam Howe was taking the backup reps today. It
- 12:28looks like he's going to be the number two guy,
- 12:30at least for a week. Number one Kyle McCord is
- 12:33back on the practice squad on that side of the
- 12:36ball when you take a look at some of the
- 12:37signings today. But I do want to go back to
- 12:39offense on Sam hal real quick. And you know, if
- 12:44somebody called you about Tanner McKee, would the Eagles have interest?
- 12:49Speaker 2: What month are we talking about tomorrow?
- 12:52Speaker 1: No? No, okay, So they want to another They want
- 12:57McKee here for the full season.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Of course, of course it's gonna be a first of all,
- 13:02if someone was gonna call about Tanner McKee, they were
- 13:04gonna not wait till till tomorrow right to do it.
- 13:06Speaker 2: It would have been a month ago, three weeks ago.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I asked that, you're right, we just saw picket get
- 13:13traded the other day. So if he's not hurt, you
- 13:16wonder if the Raiders are saying I'd rather make that
- 13:19call then maybe you know, obviously Cleveland makes a lot
- 13:22of sense. They had four quarterbacks on that roster, right.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Plus the Raiders are trying to get a quarterback on
- 13:26the cheap, which he did. I mean, you're not getting
- 13:29that's true. You're not calling up Howie and flipping a
- 13:31fifth forward Danner McGain, that's true.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Anayah Smith, he's going to Carolina. He obviously was one
- 13:37of the punt return options there. He doesn't make it.
- 13:40We were talking about wide receiver earlier. But just for
- 13:43the people out there, Smith is now not a practice
- 13:45squad guy. He ended up going to Carolina. It looks like,
- 13:49let's stick back to the defense. Gabe Hall up front
- 13:52and Byron Young, those two guys. Thoughts on them in
- 13:57terms of they're okay with them as part of their rowation.
- 14:00It's going to be Davis Carter, Ojomo and then those two, right, yep.
- 14:04Speaker 3: And that's part of the uniqueness I'm talking about. You know,
- 14:06the Raiders released this guy who was a third round pick.
- 14:09I'm talking about Gable Byron Young, but both fall.
- 14:15Speaker 2: In that same boat.
- 14:15Speaker 3: One was a rookie free agent who should have been drafted,
- 14:17but wasn't and the Eagles took chances on them and
- 14:20had them lash. I think, if I'm not mistaken, Young
- 14:24was a waiver claim, so he was on. That was
- 14:26on the fifty three last year, in active all year.
- 14:29Speaker 2: I forget. I think that might have been the case.
- 14:31But again, they wanted both of those guys to develop.
- 14:33They're happy with how they're developed them. I'm curious to see.
- 14:37I wouldn't be surprised if.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Gabe specifically got a little more run early on and
- 14:42Ty Robinson the fourth round rookie, because I think Time
- 14:45just needs to learn. He needs to understand the NFL
- 14:48game a little better, the discipline of it.
- 14:51Speaker 2: I don't think they want him as a liability out
- 14:53there in certain run.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Rundowns, So I wouldn't be surprised if Gable got a
- 14:58decent amount of run.
- 15:00Speaker 1: All right, Thursday Night, Ceede Lamb George picking some talent
- 15:06at wide receivers. I guess it's gonna be a Dory
- 15:09Jackson on one side and Quinon Mitchell on the other,
- 15:12and of course Ced lines up in the slot a
- 15:14lot so Cooper in there as well. But a Dory
- 15:16is that the guy.
- 15:17Speaker 3: I would imagine So the thing I think is interesting
- 15:20is if the Cowboys had never traded for George Dickens,
- 15:25we probably would have had an opportunity to see Vick's
- 15:28first usage of Quinon Mitchell as a shadow guy. He
- 15:31talked about that this summer, saying that's why he crossed
- 15:34trained Quinyon at left and right corner, because there are
- 15:37times where he's gonna want to use Quinyon against the
- 15:41number one. I'm certain at least he said that, we'll see.
- 15:43I've actually heard coaches say that a lot and then
- 15:46never do it. So, but it's on the radar, right,
- 15:49But now that the Cowboys have a secondary perimeter threat
- 15:52who's pretty good, you got to think that.
- 15:54Speaker 2: It's gonna be one guy on one side the other
- 15:55guy in the other end.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Plus, because CD plays the slot and moves around a lot,
- 15:59it's hard to trail him anyway.
- 16:01Speaker 1: All right, Uh, And then McCollum released today. So the
- 16:03safety spot, as we talked about, with that, you got
- 16:07who lines up one first down? Who's out there.
- 16:13Speaker 3: At safety? I would imagine it's Cooper to Gene and
- 16:16Sydney Brown. Well, wait, first down? Are the Cowboys in
- 16:19twelve personnel?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 16:21Speaker 1: You need two safeties out there. You need well, you
- 16:23need three corners. I'm sorry, you need three. You need
- 16:26two corners and a slot corner Nickel.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Okay, well then yes, then Cooper's in the slot. But
- 16:32if if the Cowboys come out with two tight ends
- 16:34and it looks like they're gonna run the ball, you're
- 16:36gonna see the Gene's safety. And by the way, another
- 16:39they also cross trained Cooper at outside. So if you
- 16:43did want to put Quinna on Mitchell and sort of
- 16:46stick him on ceedee, lamb have him outside and go
- 16:49inside when he did line up in the slot. When
- 16:50he does line up the slot, you could have quinyon
- 16:53there and then Cooper would not be uncomfortable then taking
- 16:56the outside receiver in that way, it might be Jayalen
- 16:58Tolbert or even of Pickens is on that side. So
- 17:02smarter Vic to do those things.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Yeah, listen. The only thing I would say that I
- 17:06would be worried about this season with some of the
- 17:08things on defense is the guys from last year. You
- 17:11brought this up too, I think a couple of weeks ago.
- 17:14But is Zach Bond as good or better than he
- 17:18was last year? Cooper, quinnyon all those guys, are they
- 17:22as good or better than they were a year ago.
- 17:25It's a lot to ask, Uh.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Sure is, I mean, sure is. But you know there's
- 17:31gonna be questions about the team, no doubt. But what
- 17:34is not questionable is that they do have a lot
- 17:36of talent, and talent WINSI games. So the Eagles, I imagine,
- 17:42will be in a lot of close games this year.
- 17:44Speaker 2: You know, I don't know how many teams are gonna
- 17:46blow out.
- 17:47Speaker 3: So we'll see if all that experience from last year,
- 17:49those young guys got the Djoelmo's, you know them trying
- 17:53to think of about you know, the Sydney Brown, just
- 17:55even as a backup. You know, guys like that who
- 17:58are stepping into the roles Tyler Stein the right guard.
- 18:02Speaker 2: See how much that helped them.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Were there questions that you had coming into camp that
- 18:06have been answered or all those questions still remaining.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Questions coming into camp? Well, we certainly wondered who the
- 18:15right guard would be. And it's no question, I mean
- 18:18the Eagles answered that question. They made Tyler Stein the
- 18:20right guard, and I thought in the limited amount of
- 18:23work he got in the preseason, he looked good. We
- 18:25talked about the big block that he had on that
- 18:27big Shipley thirty eight yard run. I think that was
- 18:29against the Bengals. Now, we had some questions about depth
- 18:35at edge. I think those questions are still there, like
- 18:38we just thought. We just talked about that, questions about
- 18:41who would start next to Zach Bond, whether Campbell would
- 18:45be able to be that guy. And I think that
- 18:47no matter what I mean, he's starting now, I think
- 18:49that he'll be a rookie and probably make some rookie mistakes.
- 18:52But I also think with all that athleticism, he's gonna
- 18:54accidentally make some really good plays.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Mike. I mean, he's just gonna hit somebody hard.
- 18:58Speaker 3: He's gonna wind up near a ball when it gets
- 19:00fumbled or turnout.
- 19:02Speaker 2: He's that kind of guy.
- 19:03Speaker 3: So I think that that's been a positive development for them.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Obviously, the questions are still at corner that we had
- 19:09going into camp.
- 19:09Speaker 3: You know, it's Dory Jackson right now, Cobidge, Corean Bennett
- 19:13in a few weeks. I'm not sure that you're feeling
- 19:15that greater out either compared to what you got from Slang.
- 19:17Speaker 2: So we'll have to see well to see how it goes.
- 19:20Speaker 1: All right well, tomorrow night, excuse me, a week from
- 19:24tomorrow night, the Eagles will get ready to play the
